0:00:01 > 0:00:06Welcome to Wanted Down Under, the show that catapults a British family

0:00:06 > 0:00:10right across to the other side of the world,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14to help them make the biggest decision of their life -

0:00:14 > 0:00:17whether to stay in the UK or move to New Zealand.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22Steve Clelland has been thinking about emigrating to New Zealand for a better life with his family.

0:00:22 > 0:00:27I wouldn't say I'm not happy here but I'm thinking, "Well, is it time

0:00:27 > 0:00:31"to bite the bullet just now and take it from there?"

0:00:31 > 0:00:37His dream is to stop working for himself and do regular hours so he can spend more time with the family,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40but wife Leslie isn't so sure he can stop working.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Even if we did make the move, he would end up working for himself,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and he would put himself to the same hours as he's doing just now.

0:00:46 > 0:00:51The current value of their property comes as a complete shock.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53It's too much of a loss.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55We couldn't afford it. It'd be a waste of time.

0:00:55 > 0:01:01Which means they could only afford something that wife Leslie thinks is a nightmare.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06I would be terrified in here at night. This reminds me of every horror film I ever saw in the '80s.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10The Clellands have some tough choices ahead of them, but what will they decide?

0:01:34 > 0:01:36With its magnificent landscape

0:01:36 > 0:01:38and small population of only four million,

0:01:38 > 0:01:43New Zealand is many people's idea of the perfect place to get away from it all.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49To apply to live in New Zealand as a skilled migrant, you must

0:01:49 > 0:01:54be between the ages of 20 and 55 and be on the skilled shortage list.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58But a move down under is never straightforward.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07We've given another British family the opportunity

0:02:07 > 0:02:12to spend a week down under to see if it's all they've dreamt it would be.

0:02:12 > 0:02:17After that, they'll have to make a decision one way or the other -

0:02:17 > 0:02:21to stay in the UK or to move to New Zealand.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Steve and Leslie Clelland live with their three children,

0:02:24 > 0:02:2513-year-old Lauren,

0:02:25 > 0:02:3010-year-old Amy and 6-year-old Andrew, in Falkirk, Scotland.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Steve wants to move his family 12,000 miles away

0:02:33 > 0:02:35to start a new life down under.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I wouldn't say I'm not happy here,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40but just to get more of an outdoorsy lifestyle.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42It seems like a nice place to go,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45and I'm trying to convince everybody that it's a good idea.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49However, his wife Leslie really isn't sure about making the move.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52We do have a good life here and everything's fine.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55We've got a nice house, we've got nice friends, we've got family,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and you're cutting your life off to start again,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and it's not 100 per cent it's going to be the right move,

0:03:01 > 0:03:02and what if it's not?

0:03:03 > 0:03:07It's just... I don't know. I would like a guarantee

0:03:07 > 0:03:09and I don't think you're going to get one.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Steve is certain that life Down Under would benefit all of them.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17I think that our family unit could have a better life there

0:03:17 > 0:03:20- more peaceful, less stressful,

0:03:20 > 0:03:21more prospects for the kids when they leave school.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I think there's more there than there is here.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26There's not anything here.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I think, "Well, is it time to bite the bullet just now

0:03:29 > 0:03:34"while the kids are small enough to make a new life, and take it from there?"

0:03:34 > 0:03:38But 13-year-old daughter Lauren isn't so sure about making the move.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41Well, my feeling is that I don't really want to go.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44I'd like to go and see the place but I don't really want to go

0:03:44 > 0:03:49to live there cos I like my house, and my pals - I'll miss them all.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52And 10-year-old daughter Amy has mixed emotions.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58I'm not the one that really wanted to move to New Zealand.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02I'm fine with it but I'm going to miss all my friends and that.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Steve is a self-employed refrigeration engineer

0:04:06 > 0:04:09and, as a result, does very long hours every day of the week.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13It is a rat race, and it's a downward-spiral rat race.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16I work as much as physically possible at the moment,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18and you're just staying above water.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22But his work impacts on family time and Steve's had enough.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26It's good to be busy, but the downside is...

0:04:26 > 0:04:30For instance, Andrew, my youngest wee boy - usually when he gets up,

0:04:30 > 0:04:33the first thing he'll ask is, "Is there no work today?"

0:04:33 > 0:04:37I drop him off at school, and then the next time I see him is when I'm

0:04:37 > 0:04:40dropping him off at school the next day, cos they're in bed, they're sleeping by the time I get in.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Now I'm thinking, "No, they're growing up

0:04:43 > 0:04:46"and I'm missing them growing up,"

0:04:46 > 0:04:48which isn't a nice feeling.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Although Steve really wants to move,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59he knows it's a huge emotional wrench for the rest of the family.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03I do feel guilty that I've put the idea forward.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Mainly, at the moment, the kids are

0:05:06 > 0:05:09all happy, Leslie's so close to her family,

0:05:09 > 0:05:14and for me to drag everybody away from that, it is a bit...

0:05:14 > 0:05:16You know, it does get to me a wee bit,

0:05:16 > 0:05:18but I do think it would be worth it.

0:05:18 > 0:05:24And Leslie's caught in the middle as her sister and elderly mother really don't want her to make the move.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26My sister Alison's not happy about it at all.

0:05:26 > 0:05:31Not at all. She's to the point that we've actually had a lot of arguments about it.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37She's more than my sister. She's my best friend and I would miss her.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40There'd be a big hole in my life. And I do think about my mum.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43I do get upset cos my mum's quite elderly now

0:05:43 > 0:05:47and it'd break my heart not being able to see her, but, um...

0:05:52 > 0:05:54I didn't expect that reaction.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Looks like Steve's got his work cut out.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00To help them make a decision, they're going to the vibrant city of

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Auckland, situated at the northern

0:06:03 > 0:06:06end of New Zealand's North Island.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Auckland is known as New Zealand's City of Sails

0:06:08 > 0:06:12as it has more yachts per person than any other city in the world.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15It's New Zealand's largest metropolis,

0:06:15 > 0:06:17boasting just over 1.3 million

0:06:17 > 0:06:21people and providing plenty of opportunities

0:06:21 > 0:06:25to enjoy its unspoilt landscape as well as its urban lifestyle.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29We found three possible lifestyles for the Clellands,

0:06:29 > 0:06:31each one offering a brand-new way of life

0:06:31 > 0:06:34for them to try on their budget,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36but which one will be the most suitable?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Properties are a lot better value in the country.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Spacious family homes can cost around £280,000,

0:06:44 > 0:06:47so bang on the Clellands' budget.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50But if you want that dream place,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53you'll have to spend an awful lot more.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Steve's commute to work into central Auckland would be over an hour's drive,

0:06:56 > 0:07:01but there are good transport links for Leslie and the kids to get to the hub of the city,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05as well as schools and outdoor activities on their doorstep.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08So very different from their life in the UK.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11But what about the second option?

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Property prices in the centre have boomed in recent years,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17and the Clellands would have to make do

0:07:17 > 0:07:19with less space than they have in the UK.

0:07:19 > 0:07:25This four-bedroomed property is on the market for just over £500,000,

0:07:25 > 0:07:26too much for the Clellands,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29but they could look to the nearby suburbs

0:07:29 > 0:07:30where houses are plentiful,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33from high-rise living to spacious family homes.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Steve would have a short commute to work,

0:07:36 > 0:07:40which would mean more time spent together as a family.

0:07:42 > 0:07:47That all looks very inviting, but what about the third option?

0:07:47 > 0:07:50The beautiful coastline would allow the Clellands

0:07:50 > 0:07:54to live an active lifestyle that they're looking for.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57There are plenty of houses with great living spaces along the coast,

0:07:57 > 0:08:01but those sea views don't necessarily come cheap,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04like this one at over £500,000.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Moving slightly further inland, however,

0:08:06 > 0:08:11would provide them with good-sized family homes for affordable prices.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14The commute for Steve could be an easy 20 minutes,

0:08:14 > 0:08:19and schools as well as watersport activities are on their doorstep.

0:08:19 > 0:08:24Three very different options there, all of them life-changing.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27So where did we decide to send our family?

0:08:27 > 0:08:31We've decided the beach option is the most suitable for the Clellands.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34It'll provide them with a good mix of coastal living as well as

0:08:34 > 0:08:39opportunities to find spacious family houses within budget.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42For their trial week, we've lined up a job for Steve.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Just jump up and have a look at it. See what's going on.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49- They'll sample housing options in Arkles Bay...- I'll just stay here. That's me.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51I've moved. I don't need any more.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54I even like the furniture! LAUGHTER

0:08:54 > 0:08:58And they'll get a real taste of New Zealand life.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00I love it. I think it's great. A beautiful place.

0:09:00 > 0:09:06But they have a tough week ahead of them as they try to make the biggest decision of their lives.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08I don't want you to go.

0:09:11 > 0:09:16The Clellands are finally making the trip Steve's dreamt of for years.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19The journey takes them 12,000 miles

0:09:19 > 0:09:22and across three continents from Falkirk to New Zealand.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29And 32 hours later they reach Auckland, jet-lagged but excited.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Very long, very long, but it was fine.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36The kids were really, really good. I'm really proud of them all.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38I'm looking forward to going out and seeing the place.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41I've heard about it so many times and I've read so much about it,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44but this is our chance to see it now, so looking forward to that.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Time to see what New Zealand's got in store for them.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52It's the first time any of the Clellands have ever been to New Zealand,

0:09:52 > 0:09:57and they'll be staying in the coastal suburb of Red Beach, 15 miles from Auckland central.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00The house has four bedrooms with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04There's a huge open-plan living area, including a kitchen,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06and enough rooms for the kids to choose their own.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09So what will they make of it all?

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Look at that, Andrew. Look at that view.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Oh, look at the view, Leslie.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18That's the wow factor.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19It's stunning.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23- Dead open plan, isn't it? - That's another wee sitting room.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28OK, we'll take it! CHUCKLING

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Wow! Does that mean Leslie's already been convinced

0:10:31 > 0:10:33to make the move down under?

0:10:33 > 0:10:36It's lovely.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Can this be my room?- No.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41No, this is Mum and Dad's room, no!

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Look at the view, Steven. Stunning.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48- So is that an actual beach down there, yeah?- Aye.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50So it is.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52That's amazing. It's lovely. Absolutely lovely.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56I'm quite impressed with what I've seen so far.

0:10:56 > 0:11:00It is lovely, really nice, but whether or not I could live here

0:11:00 > 0:11:04is another matter altogether, so I don't know.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08I'm really impressed. I think it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11At the moment, they all hate me,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13because they're all tired and I've dragged them

0:11:13 > 0:11:15to the other side of the world, so we'll wait

0:11:15 > 0:11:19and see once they wake up tomorrow when they've had a good sleep, and then we can

0:11:19 > 0:11:25start exploring the place and find out what the place is about, and hopefully we'll get some smiles.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28Let's hope so, Steve, or you've got a long week ahead of you.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Back in the UK, the Clellands live in a large five-bedroomed detached

0:11:36 > 0:11:44house in Falkirk and, if they make the move to New Zealand, they would want something of a similar size.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48They bought it for £305,000 in 2008.

0:11:48 > 0:11:56If they can get what they paid for it, then they would have £180,000 equity towards a New Zealand home.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Steve wants a smaller mortgage this time round

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and wants to keep it below £100,000,

0:12:02 > 0:12:06but spacious properties with a sea view aren't cheap,

0:12:06 > 0:12:10so could they really afford that dream home?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14They're starting their search in Arkles Bay

0:12:14 > 0:12:16that looks over the Weiti River.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Property one is a four-bedroomed detached house

0:12:18 > 0:12:19in the sleepy part of the bay.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22It's on the market for £246,000,

0:12:22 > 0:12:26which is good news for the Clellands

0:12:26 > 0:12:30as it would potentially mean they'd only have to get a £34,000 mortgage.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35And they're meeting up with local estate agent Phil Currie.

0:12:35 > 0:12:40- Not too bad. How's yourself? - And how are you?- Hi, I'm fine. - Good. How are your kids?

0:12:40 > 0:12:43First up is the garage which, to be honest,

0:12:43 > 0:12:45looks like it could do with a bit of a clear-up.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Come in here, guys, and have a look.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50As it stands now, you've got two garages,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53both with auto garage-door openers.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56You can make this like a studio flat for people coming to visit.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59- Yeah.- You're a brave man, Steve,

0:12:59 > 0:13:04but I'm not so sure Leslie's quite as convinced.

0:13:04 > 0:13:08Let's hope the upstairs is more impressive.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12All the rooms are on one floor

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and it has an open-plan kitchen-lounge area.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16It's not a huge living area.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Yeah.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22It's modern. It is modern what they've done.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24They've made the best of the space they've got.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Maybe so, but it feels a little cramped,

0:13:26 > 0:13:28especially for a family of five.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31It's got character, I'll give it that.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Let's hope the master bedroom is better,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38but will the size be enough to impress Leslie?

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- It's a nice size in here. - Yeah, it is a good size.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Walk-in wardrobe, of course, and en-suite.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47That's a good size as well.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49- Nice big shower.- Mm.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53That's fine. It's a good size.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It's all right, but no-one seems that convinced with the interiors.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Maybe the views will win them over.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01- A good view.- Yeah.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03And it's private.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05It's quite quiet here.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07Well, they like bits of the house,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10but they hardly seem bowled over by property one.

0:14:10 > 0:14:17Yet if they really want a smaller mortgage as well as a beautiful view then they can't be so picky.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19But what do they honestly think about this property?

0:14:19 > 0:14:24- It's a good house, but not for us with kids.- No, I don't get the feel.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26It's just not me, just...

0:14:26 > 0:14:28No, I would be terrified in here at night.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31It just reminds me of every horror film I ever saw in the '80s.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35- We'll be going home if we get this! - I would not move for this at all.

0:14:35 > 0:14:36This wouldn't...

0:14:36 > 0:14:38- No.- No.

0:14:38 > 0:14:46Oh, no! House-hunting definitely isn't convincing Leslie that this move is a good idea, and Steve isn't

0:14:46 > 0:14:52too impressed either, but on their budget they might struggle to fulfil their aspirations.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56However, we've got something up our sleeve that might just fit the bill,

0:14:56 > 0:14:59and it's just five minutes' drive away

0:14:59 > 0:15:01in the busier part of Arkles Bay.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Wow! This looks much more up their street.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Surely this property is going to be over their budget.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11Estate agent Norma is there to meet them.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14- Hi, I'm Norma.- I'm Steven. - Hiya, Steven. Love the accent.

0:15:14 > 0:15:20Property two is a four-bedroomed detached house on a large plot, 660 square metres in size.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25It's a stone's throw from the beach, and although you can't see the sea,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27it has great views of the valley below.

0:15:27 > 0:15:32It's exactly on budget at £280,000.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34First, it's upstairs to the living area.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38Straightaway, Leslie seems much happier.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- This is lovely. - It's a beautiful home.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43I like this open plan. It's really, really lovely.

0:15:43 > 0:15:48And it's even got the all-important separate study area for workaholic Steve.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Give Steven a separate study so that, again, you're not stuck in a wee room out the way.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56Well, looks like we might have a winner on our hands already,

0:15:56 > 0:15:58and Norma's got some other potentially good news.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01There's a lot of British families up this road, actually.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04My sister lives up there. She's Scottish.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- It's a nice big park, kids' park.- It is, and they're probably quite safe

0:16:07 > 0:16:11to go on their own because you can see them from here, can't you?

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Next up is the main lounge.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17- Really good size. - Oh, this is fantastic.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19What a size this is.

0:16:19 > 0:16:24- This is great, with a proper fire. Yeah.- You've got this...

0:16:24 > 0:16:26This in the afternoon is just smothered with sun.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28It's just absolutely gorgeous.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30This house just seems to be getting better and better.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32What will they make of the views?

0:16:32 > 0:16:35- Oh, no, it's absolutely gorgeous. - Isn't it gorgeous?

0:16:35 > 0:16:38Yeah, and it's got a really... I love the drive as well,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41because it's like the horseshoe drive - drive in and out.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Oh, no, this is really lovely, Steven.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48I'll just stay here. You can all go.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51That's me, I've moved! I don't need any more.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53I even like the furniture!

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Wow, that's fantastic news!

0:16:56 > 0:17:01They've hardly been in New Zealand for five minutes, and already Leslie's had a change of heart.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03It looks like she's moving in.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07Will the bedrooms also be what she's looking for?

0:17:07 > 0:17:12There are four, two downstairs and two upstairs, all a good size.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15But what will Leslie think of the master bedroom?

0:17:15 > 0:17:19This is the master bedroom, and we've got the en-suite

0:17:19 > 0:17:25- and the walk-in wardrobe, so have a wee look in here.- Oh, yeah, yeah.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Surely this is too good to be true,

0:17:28 > 0:17:33but the small garden looks like it could pose a problem for Steve.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- You want more garden than this, though, don't you?- Mmm.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39It is a sun-trap here.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42Yeah. You will probably lose the sun a little bit in the afternoon,

0:17:42 > 0:17:48and summertime it's really nice not to have the sun in the back cos it does get very hot.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51- It's a stunning house, absolutely stunning.- It's gorgeous.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55I think Norma is already preaching to the converted when it comes to Leslie,

0:17:55 > 0:17:59but she may also have a solution to the lack of garden space for Steve.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Wow.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Nice big garage.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Oh, Steven!

0:18:05 > 0:18:06This would be the playroom.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Yeah, put a computer in the corner.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11- It gives you the idea of what you can have.- Yeah.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14Not that you're getting one! LAUGHTER

0:18:14 > 0:18:19Well, looks like Leslie might already be sold on New Zealand property, but how do the girls feel?

0:18:19 > 0:18:24I like the house but I wouldn't live in it cos I don't really want to live here.

0:18:27 > 0:18:33I would like to live in New Zealand cos it looks like a nice place, but I can't really make my mind up.

0:18:33 > 0:18:39The girls are divided, but what did both Leslie and Steve think about property two?

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Yeah, I'd move in there today!

0:18:42 > 0:18:46But that's because I don't want to do the journey back home!

0:18:46 > 0:18:49I would, I would live in there in a minute. That is gorgeous.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51That is my ideal house. That is what I would...

0:18:51 > 0:18:53I like the open plan of it all.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57I've always said that's really, really nice.

0:18:57 > 0:19:01It's a proper family home. It's a nice feeling.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03It had a nice warm feeling to it.

0:19:03 > 0:19:08- I would prefer a bigger garden. - I definitely would like a garden, but it's lovely, though.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Beautiful house, though.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13It is a beautiful house, but it does have certain drawbacks.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15But every house does.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17You always compromise on something.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19The living area is just...is to die for.

0:19:19 > 0:19:26So a potential winner for Leslie, but Steve's the driving force for making the move to New Zealand,

0:19:26 > 0:19:29and he wasn't convinced by property one or two.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32If he's already got misgivings on New Zealand homes, will it make

0:19:32 > 0:19:36him change his mind about making the move down under?

0:19:36 > 0:19:40Before he can make that decision, Norma's got one more property.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Let's hope it will suit all their needs.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Property three is just two minutes up the road,

0:19:45 > 0:19:47so they know they'll like the area.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Again, it's a four-bedroomed house,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53but this time it's on a slightly larger plot of land.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56It's over their budget at £304,000

0:19:56 > 0:20:01but, if it's what they all want, then it might be worth it.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04First port of call is the teenager pad.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08- It's huge and Lauren could have plenty of mates to sleep over.- Wow.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10What do you think of this, Lauren?

0:20:10 > 0:20:14It's a nice little lounge cos this opens up on its own.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17Ah, this is lovely. This is really nice, isn't it?

0:20:17 > 0:20:20- Yeah.- As a teenager's room. - It's a really good teenager's...

0:20:20 > 0:20:23Or as a wee granny annexe.

0:20:23 > 0:20:29So there's plenty of room downstairs, and the upstairs seems to have lots of space too,

0:20:29 > 0:20:34- with an open-plan kitchen-diner and lounge area. - So come on up and have a wee look.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39A nice bit of walnut.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42OK, have a look at the kitchen first.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44That's lovely.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Look at the view. Wow.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49And the deck. The deck's nice.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53- That's lovely.- There's just a lot of family room in here.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55It's lovely.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58- It's a lovely house, this one. - It is, isn't it?- Isn't it?

0:20:58 > 0:21:00It's a beautiful home.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04- And it's so well... - You get a lot of house for your money, don't you?

0:21:04 > 0:21:06- Aye.- You do get a lot of house for your money.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09And it's very stylish. It's lovely.

0:21:09 > 0:21:10That's potentially great news.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Steve's already liking this property.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17Will the rest of the interior live up to his expectations?

0:21:17 > 0:21:21- So this is the son's room.- Andrew's room. That's a good size.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24It's a great-sized room. Andrew, do you like this room?

0:21:24 > 0:21:26Yeah, I love it.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Good to see Andrew's on board too, and down the corridor,

0:21:30 > 0:21:32there's another bedroom for Amy,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35as well as the all-important master bedroom for Steve and Leslie.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39This is the master suite with another en-suite in here.

0:21:39 > 0:21:40This is lovely. It's a lovely room.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43It's beautiful, and with entrance way onto the deck.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46- It's a lovely bed. - Yeah. Nice big wardrobe.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48Wow, look at that.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52- That's great. - A whole set of cupboards over there.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58Outside decking is a popular feature of New Zealand homes, and they don't

0:21:58 > 0:22:02come much nicer than this, but what will Steve make of it all?

0:22:02 > 0:22:05This is the nice entertaining area.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07It's really lovely cos it's got indoor-outdoor flow

0:22:07 > 0:22:11from the family room, so if you are barbecuing or something...

0:22:11 > 0:22:14And it's a fabulous area just to...

0:22:14 > 0:22:15This is a bit of a...

0:22:15 > 0:22:19- It's really warm, yeah. - Some view from here as well.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24The deck goes right the way round the whole...right the way round to the lounge.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- So what do you think of this house? - Oh, this one's stunning.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31That's what I thought a New Zealand house would be like.

0:22:31 > 0:22:32- It's nice, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36- I didn't like the... - Would you move for this?

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Aye, possibly.

0:22:38 > 0:22:43Well, looks like the Clellands have found their ideal home, but it's beyond their budget.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47By how much depends on how much they'll make on their UK house.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50But for now, how will they vote on property?

0:22:50 > 0:22:55Right, what do you prefer - Scottish houses or New Zealand houses?

0:22:55 > 0:22:57New Zealand.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01After seeing all the houses we saw today, I think,

0:23:01 > 0:23:05well, the houses in New Zealand have a lot more character than

0:23:05 > 0:23:08the ones in the UK which are just big boxes,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10so I'm going to choose New Zealand.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14The houses we've seen today, the New Zealand houses,

0:23:14 > 0:23:17they all seem to be bright and airy, loads of space.

0:23:17 > 0:23:22There's definitely better value for money than what we get

0:23:22 > 0:23:25in the UK, so I'd have to vote for New Zealand.

0:23:25 > 0:23:30So, finally, with Leslie not sure that New Zealand is for her, how will she vote?

0:23:30 > 0:23:36Seeing what we've seen today on the houses, they're all really nice and,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40between Scotland and New Zealand, I think I prefer New Zealand houses.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43But if all they could afford would be property one,

0:23:43 > 0:23:44would they be so sure?

0:23:58 > 0:24:02The Clellands want to spend more time together as a family,

0:24:02 > 0:24:06and hope the move down under will help them achieve this,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08but will Leslie be won over

0:24:08 > 0:24:11by what the New Zealand lifestyle has to offer?

0:24:12 > 0:24:15After a successful property day, Steve is keen to keep the family

0:24:16 > 0:24:20on side and show them the kind of activities that New Zealand

0:24:20 > 0:24:24can offer them, so they're off kayaking on the Puhoi River.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32Suited and booted, it's time for a taste of the New Zealand outdoors,

0:24:32 > 0:24:34but not everyone's looking forward to it.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36Andrew, are you feeling a little bit nervous?

0:24:36 > 0:24:38- Yeah.- Just a little bit.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Lauren takes to kayaking like a duck to water,

0:24:41 > 0:24:44but Andrew's nerves have got the better of him.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46- I'm quite scared! - Andrew, you're OK.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Just go over to Lauren, and then we'll come back and see how you feel. OK?

0:24:49 > 0:24:54Well, this trip might get called off before it's even started.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Look, Lauren's trying.

0:24:56 > 0:24:57Kayaking is so scary!

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Why don't we put Mum in?

0:25:04 > 0:25:06There, how gentle's that?

0:25:08 > 0:25:11With the rest of the family safely out on the water and

0:25:11 > 0:25:15no croc in sight, Andrew finally agrees to go out on the river.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28And surprise, surprise, Andrew is actually enjoying himself, and

0:25:28 > 0:25:33it's good for Leslie to see the kids having such a great time with Steve.

0:25:33 > 0:25:38Steven's a great dad. He really loves spending time with them, but they just don't get as much time.

0:25:38 > 0:25:44Lauren's getting older, that she's not going to want to spend any time with us, let alone with her dad.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47He needs to be here now. He definitely does.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Andrew, he really needs him now and Steven knows that.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53I don't like to say too much too him because he feels quite guilty enough,

0:25:53 > 0:25:57and if I have a go, then it's just making him feel even worse.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02My arms are killing me!

0:26:02 > 0:26:04That may be so, Andrew, but Steve's always looked

0:26:04 > 0:26:08forward to this sort of outdoor activity along with the family.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12It's lovely, and it's not too warm,

0:26:12 > 0:26:18it's just nice, and there's no midges, which is really unheard of.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Whenever you get even a slightest bit of a warm day in Scotland,

0:26:21 > 0:26:23you're covered with midges and you can't go out.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25I love it. I think it's great.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Even Lauren's like this, "Beautiful. Beautiful place."

0:26:28 > 0:26:32So it seems everyone is happy, and Steve's

0:26:32 > 0:26:36job of convincing them all that life in New Zealand will be better

0:26:36 > 0:26:37is going to be a piece of cake.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41If I moved here, I'd miss my friends,

0:26:41 > 0:26:43so I really don't want to move here.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46Ah, so Andrew isn't quite convinced.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48But what about wife Leslie?

0:26:48 > 0:26:51It's really nice and very relaxing.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55Even going out in the car, you're not sitting in loads of traffic

0:26:55 > 0:26:57and...it just feels really chilled.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00- Sounds like she would be willing to make the move.- I would do it.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02It's just family. I just...

0:27:02 > 0:27:05I think I'd miss my family too much.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Possibly you could come home and say, "Right, yeah, that's it, we're going to move."

0:27:08 > 0:27:11But then, when I got home,

0:27:11 > 0:27:13I would..."No, I can't do it."

0:27:13 > 0:27:19Oh, dear, Steve. Do you ever get that feeling that you're stuck up a certain creek without a paddle?

0:27:19 > 0:27:22Well, it sounds like a lot more hard work is needed to get

0:27:22 > 0:27:26Andrew and Leslie to agree to make the move to New Zealand,

0:27:26 > 0:27:29but as the kayaking trip comes to an end,

0:27:29 > 0:27:32which way will they vote, UK or New Zealand?

0:27:32 > 0:27:35There's a lot of things you can do in Falkirk,

0:27:35 > 0:27:36but most of it's weather permitting.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38We don't get much good weather

0:27:38 > 0:27:42that you can actually go outside and do anything,

0:27:42 > 0:27:45whereas in New Zealand there is a lot more to do,

0:27:45 > 0:27:47the weather's better on the whole,

0:27:47 > 0:27:51so on that note, I would say New Zealand.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54I'll pick New Zealand.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58I pick New Zealand.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01I like the kayaking and I like the house,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03so I think I would choose New Zealand.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05This is potentially great news.

0:28:05 > 0:28:09Looks like Steve has finally got all the children on board,

0:28:09 > 0:28:12but will Leslie also be convinced by what New Zealand has to offer?

0:28:12 > 0:28:16Just at the moment, I'll keep my options open

0:28:16 > 0:28:18and I shall choose Falkirk.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Traitor!

0:28:20 > 0:28:23It's actually better than I thought.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25I've only got one to convince.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33Back in Scotland, Steve is a self-employed

0:28:33 > 0:28:38refrigeration engineer, giving himself a salary of £40,000 a year.

0:28:38 > 0:28:43He set the business up with wife Leslie in 1999 and, although he

0:28:43 > 0:28:47loves his work, the hours take their toll on his family life.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49I drop the kids off at school at nine,

0:28:49 > 0:28:52and then my working day's till nine, ten o'clock at night,

0:28:52 > 0:28:54eleven o'clock at night.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56Sometimes, I've not been in till three, four in morning.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00After ten years of self-employment, Steve has realised that there are

0:29:00 > 0:29:02more important things in life

0:29:02 > 0:29:05and is looking to New Zealand for the answer.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08In Britain, it seems to be you just work, that's it. Work, work, work.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10And when you finish your work, there's more work and there's

0:29:10 > 0:29:15no let up for it, whereas in New Zealand, Australia and places like that, they seem to be more,

0:29:15 > 0:29:20"Well, no, we'll do it tomorrow because it's finished for today.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22"We're at home, we're at family time,"

0:29:22 > 0:29:25which you don't get here. It just doesn't exist.

0:29:26 > 0:29:30- See you later. You be good for Mum? - Yeah.- Yeah? Good boy.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33Steve is looking forward to experiencing work in NZ

0:29:33 > 0:29:35but Leslie still has reservations.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39If the work's not there for him and he's not going to enjoy it, then we

0:29:39 > 0:29:42can't afford it and then that's basically where it stops.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45And because Steve won't be self-employed

0:29:45 > 0:29:49if they move down under, she's worried about his salary.

0:29:49 > 0:29:51Can he work for someone else after so long?

0:29:51 > 0:29:56So are we going to be able to still afford the lifestyle we have on his wages?

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Yep, we'll see how it goes, see how it goes today.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04If the work pans out what I think it should or it could,

0:30:04 > 0:30:05then I will be convinced.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08It's just a matter of trying to convince everybody else.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11You don't want to move to the other side of the world,

0:30:11 > 0:30:13then be worse off, obviously.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15So, today's quite an important day.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18It's quite exciting, going to see what it's all about.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20Quite looking forward to it.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25So Steve is meeting up with Matthew to see what the hours and pay are

0:30:25 > 0:30:28like for refrigeration engineers in New Zealand.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32If he can't achieve what he wants from his job, then he might change

0:30:32 > 0:30:35his mind about making the move down under altogether.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41- Matthew!- Steven.- I'm Steven. - Pleased to meet you.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43And it's straight down to business,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45as potential boss Matthew lets Steve

0:30:45 > 0:30:47know what he can expect to earn in New Zealand.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51From an hourly-rate point of view, a good fridgie in New Zealand is

0:30:51 > 0:30:55earning mid to late 30s. Dollars an hour, that is.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59So you're paid on a wage as opposed to a salary,

0:30:59 > 0:31:03so working roughly 40-45 hours a week.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07That news is OK as Steve's basic New Zealand salary would be £35,000,

0:31:07 > 0:31:10less than what he earns back in Scotland,

0:31:10 > 0:31:13but he could make it up with some overtime.

0:31:13 > 0:31:17Just how much overtime he's willing to take on is the burning question

0:31:17 > 0:31:20as he could end up being back at square one,

0:31:20 > 0:31:23working long hours and not having any time for his family.

0:31:23 > 0:31:27We have a call-out roster where engineers take turns on being

0:31:27 > 0:31:33on after-hours call, and those guys generally work 45-50 hours a week.

0:31:33 > 0:31:40In Scotland, they're about 12, 13 hours a day, call-out 24/7. Seven days.

0:31:40 > 0:31:45You're always on call-out, which really annoys Leslie.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47But, no, that sounds good. That sounds really good.

0:31:47 > 0:31:53- OK, let's go.- After a quick run-down, Matthew wants to know what skills Steve has, so he's going to put

0:31:53 > 0:31:58him straight in at the deep end and sends him out on site for his first job with manager Ray.

0:31:58 > 0:32:02- Ray, I'll introduce you to Steve. - Hi, Steve. Nice to meet you.

0:32:02 > 0:32:06- I thought you might be able to show Steve a site.- Thanks, Matthew.

0:32:07 > 0:32:13As he sets off for a hard day's work, the rest of the family are across the other side of the city.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18Although Leslie found her dream home,

0:32:18 > 0:32:21she still has strong misgivings about starting up a life

0:32:21 > 0:32:25in New Zealand, and she wants to get a sense of Auckland,

0:32:25 > 0:32:27so she and the children are off to take in the city

0:32:27 > 0:32:31at the top of Auckland's famous landmark, the Sky Tower.

0:32:31 > 0:32:36It's the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand and stands at 328 metres,

0:32:36 > 0:32:39or just over 1,000 feet.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Oh, my God! THEY GASP

0:32:44 > 0:32:46That was scary!

0:32:46 > 0:32:51On a clear day, you can see nearly 50 miles in all directions at the top of the tower.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55It's quite good up here. You can see for miles.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58You can see the harbour and all the boats.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02Amenities like this are important for Leslie who grew up in Glasgow.

0:33:03 > 0:33:07I enjoyed the city when I was young and I think, for them,

0:33:07 > 0:33:10you do need somewhere like this to come when you're younger.

0:33:10 > 0:33:16But she's still not sure that what she'll be trading in will provide them with anything better.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19It's got what anywhere else has got, really.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22It's just a bit different from what we're used to.

0:33:22 > 0:33:26And her thoughts also turn to Steve and his attitude to work.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28He's not a nine to five person.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31He likes to think he's a nine to five person, but he's not.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35I think, even if he did make the move, he would end up working for

0:33:35 > 0:33:39himself, and he'd put himself to the same hours as he's doing just now.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Part of me does think he thinks if we move, that'll be it,

0:33:42 > 0:33:45everything will change and it'll be...

0:33:45 > 0:33:48You know, he'll be happier and he'll be more relaxed.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50I think that has to be...

0:33:50 > 0:33:52I think he has to do that himself.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54I don't think his environment will change that.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56I think he has to do that himself.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58She's also feeling the pressure from family back home.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02In a way, maybe I'm not wanting to like it too much,

0:34:02 > 0:34:03and have that much...

0:34:04 > 0:34:09..negativity and that much guilt put on me from the rest of my family

0:34:09 > 0:34:11that I'm not going to do it, and I don't want to have

0:34:11 > 0:34:14to be stopped from doing something I want to do.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17It's a really tough decision for Leslie,

0:34:17 > 0:34:20but she knows that she and Steve need a change.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23Perhaps it's just a question of taking a leap of faith

0:34:23 > 0:34:25to make the move down under.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35Meanwhile, Steve and Ray have turned up on site.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38- They were just complaining about a burning smell in here.- Right.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42So I don't know if you want to just jump up and have a look at it, see what's going on there?

0:34:42 > 0:34:45And Ray's decided that Steve's got to get his hands dirty.

0:34:45 > 0:34:48It's straight down to work under his watchful eye.

0:34:51 > 0:34:56Good news for Steve - all this stuff looks very familiar.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59- It's the same equipment. - Yeah.- It's strange.

0:34:59 > 0:35:03- It's the other side of the world and it's the exact same equipment. - It's amazing.

0:35:06 > 0:35:07- Yeah. - WHIRRING

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Yeah, well, that solved that one.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12So far, so good.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16Steve looks like he's impressed Ray.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18I think he's very confident and I think he'll do very well

0:35:18 > 0:35:20because he's got a good, positive attitude.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24He enjoys what he does which is a seriously good thing.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28That's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a bit of experience as well.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32He's got a bit of experience so that's all advantage, you know. That's really cool.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37He'd be sought after when he comes out, there's no doubt.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39He'll have a problem. He'll have to be careful.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41Everyone will want him!

0:35:41 > 0:35:47It seems that Steve can't put a foot wrong, so how would he really find working for somebody else?

0:35:47 > 0:35:51It would be hard to get used to cos I've worked for myself for 12 years now.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54So, I thought I would be more nervous,

0:35:54 > 0:35:57but I was actually really looking forward to it.

0:35:57 > 0:36:02Yeah, you make mistakes. Yeah, of course I would, but you learn. You learn by your mistakes.

0:36:02 > 0:36:07But thoughts of Leslie worrying about leaving family behind play on Steve's mind.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Leslie would prefer to be back home.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11That's a family issue.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14But I wouldn't drag anybody kicking and screaming

0:36:14 > 0:36:17across the other side of the world.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19They have to agree that this is what they want,

0:36:19 > 0:36:22and if everybody's in agreement, then I'll pack my bags.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25I would pack everything up and move everything over.

0:36:25 > 0:36:31But now, how will he vote on working in the refrigeration business New Zealand style?

0:36:31 > 0:36:34All our experiences today on the work side of things,

0:36:34 > 0:36:37the equipment's pretty much exactly what I'm used to,

0:36:37 > 0:36:40but what is missing is all the stress involved that you

0:36:40 > 0:36:44get at home in the rat race, so, on that, I would choose...

0:36:47 > 0:36:49..New Zealand.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59Moving to New Zealand would involve massive financial

0:36:59 > 0:37:02as well as emotional decisions for the Clellands.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05They'd need to take into account the cost of living in Auckland,

0:37:05 > 0:37:09as well as what they'd make on their house in the UK.

0:37:10 > 0:37:15Their home is a five-bedroom property which they bought in 2008

0:37:15 > 0:37:16for £305,000.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21We sent round three local estate agents to give their opinion

0:37:21 > 0:37:24on what they think it's worth in the current market.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26'Very nice, wee bit crowded.'

0:37:30 > 0:37:32It's not crowded.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42Nice glossy tiled floor. Very nice.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44It sets off the glossy white units.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Good contrast.

0:37:46 > 0:37:51Nice little dining area looking out over the countryside.

0:37:51 > 0:37:52Excellent.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56Good storage space...

0:37:56 > 0:37:58plenty cupboards.

0:38:00 > 0:38:07Quite a tight plot for the size of house, but well maintained.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23It's a very flexible downstairs apartment, used as a family room.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26Perhaps a little small for a dining room, however,

0:38:26 > 0:38:28but nonetheless, very well presented.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37Excellent size of master bedroom, well proportioned.

0:38:37 > 0:38:41Larger window formation lets in natural light.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43En-suite shower room.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50Very stylish en-suite shower room with larger shower base, thermostatic

0:38:50 > 0:38:54shower, fitted storage, ceramic-tiled floor. Wonderful.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59Shoe holding the door.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03Now, third level.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05Double bedroom,

0:39:08 > 0:39:10Internet access.

0:39:11 > 0:39:15Nice sky window. Very nice.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24This is a very good-sized family house, it's on three

0:39:24 > 0:39:29levels, it's five bedrooms, four bathrooms, parking outside.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32Reasonable-sized back garden with stunning views.

0:39:32 > 0:39:36So, I would value this property at £249,000.

0:39:36 > 0:39:41For a quick sale... probably about 239.

0:39:42 > 0:39:48For a quick sale, you'd probably be looking at round about 240.

0:39:48 > 0:39:56The property would have an open market value realistically stated within £225,000 to £230,000.

0:39:56 > 0:39:57It may achieve slightly more than that

0:39:57 > 0:40:01with the correct buyer and demand for the property.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04However, the property market, as we're all aware, has suffered

0:40:04 > 0:40:07and struggled, particularly in the centre of the market

0:40:07 > 0:40:11where there's an over-supply of new-build properties of this type.

0:40:11 > 0:40:17Forced sale, we'd perhaps recommend offers over £215,000.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20No chance.

0:40:20 > 0:40:21This has come as a massive shock.

0:40:21 > 0:40:26They paid £305,000 for their property in 2008,

0:40:26 > 0:40:31and they've made a potential loss of around £55,000 plus.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34If we did want to move, then we doubt we could sell just now.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36It's just not the right time.

0:40:36 > 0:40:40The market is getting better, but obviously we couldn't...

0:40:40 > 0:40:43That would be taking too much of a loss.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46It makes it a little bit harder to move, I think,

0:40:46 > 0:40:48if the house prices don't go up.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51But we'll just need to wait and see how things go.

0:40:51 > 0:40:56It is a bit of a slap in the face, though, when you think...

0:40:57 > 0:40:59I've said from the very beginning,

0:40:59 > 0:41:02when Steven started talking about emigrating,

0:41:02 > 0:41:05that it would depend on the house, and at that point,

0:41:05 > 0:41:09that's when everything took a downward spiral.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12And it all really depends on the house.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14I wouldn't sell it if we were going to take a loss.

0:41:14 > 0:41:16It's too much of a loss. We couldn't afford it.

0:41:16 > 0:41:17It would be a waste of time.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21Aw, with that crushing news,

0:41:21 > 0:41:24Steven and Leslie are going to have to do their sums.

0:41:24 > 0:41:28Is a move to New Zealand going to be possible at all?

0:41:29 > 0:41:34We've prepared a comparison of their UK and New Zealand expenses

0:41:34 > 0:41:37to see if they can afford a life down under

0:41:37 > 0:41:39despite their loss of equity.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41I'm actually really deflated at the moment.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44The cost of the house, it's just totally depressed me,

0:41:44 > 0:41:46and that is a big issue to me.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49If we don't get what we want for the house, then we can't do it anyway.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52The reason we have that house and we have that mortgage is because you

0:41:52 > 0:41:56work for yourself and because you can earn the money you earn.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59Get a mortgage of 81,000...

0:41:59 > 0:42:03It brings your equity down a bit, then you find that you're going

0:42:03 > 0:42:07to be 50,000 less for your house than you thought.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12So if that's all your house is worth, then obviously you're not going to have...

0:42:12 > 0:42:16Instead of 180, it's going to be 130,

0:42:16 > 0:42:19so that changes everything drastically.

0:42:20 > 0:42:24Let's say the salary in equivalent pounds

0:42:24 > 0:42:27would be between 33,000 and 38,000,

0:42:27 > 0:42:31and you've got the option of working overtime.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34- What's the mortgage, actually? - Between 594 and 1,000.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36Electricity...

0:42:36 > 0:42:37- That's in there.- At home...

0:42:40 > 0:42:41£842 a month.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44- We'd still get a mortgage for 20 years?- Aye.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46Would you want to start with another 20-year mortgage?

0:42:46 > 0:42:48I know.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51Council tax 203.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59- Aye.- Groceries - monthly shop.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02£600 a month, wouldn't it be?

0:43:02 > 0:43:05We're not going to stop eating just because we've moved,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07so I would keep it the same.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10I think the food bill's going to be roughly the same.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12I think it'll even itself out.

0:43:13 > 0:43:15Council tax 76.

0:43:19 > 0:43:212,328 per month.

0:43:21 > 0:43:25It's working out £200 cheaper per month to live here than it is at home.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28The cost of living seems to be cheaper in New Zealand.

0:43:28 > 0:43:33However, they could lose £55,000 on the sale of their UK home.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36Does this mean Steve might not be willing to make the move?

0:43:36 > 0:43:41It's still something I want for the kids and for us.

0:43:41 > 0:43:42It's still a good thing.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45Um...it just makes it a little bit harder

0:43:45 > 0:43:48to walk straight into something.

0:43:48 > 0:43:49It's going to be a wee bit more difficult.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58Steve, Leslie and the children are going to the pub

0:43:58 > 0:44:02to meet up with another Steven who recently emigrated to New Zealand.

0:44:02 > 0:44:07- This is Leslie, this is Andrew, this is Lauren and this is Amy. - Hiya, pleased to meet you.

0:44:07 > 0:44:11He's built up a solid group of Kiwi mates as well as some fellow Brits

0:44:11 > 0:44:13who've also made the move.

0:44:13 > 0:44:17Hopefully, they can make our family feel at home, and answer a few questions into the bargain.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22So, are you settling in OK, then, yeah?

0:44:22 > 0:44:26I feel like I've never left England. I feel like I'm back home.

0:44:26 > 0:44:29- Even the accents aren't that different.- Yeah.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32There's times I walk around and have to remind myself, "I'm in New Zealand now."

0:44:32 > 0:44:35While Steve gets the drinks in, Leslie is finding out about

0:44:35 > 0:44:38how easy it would be for the children to fit in.

0:44:38 > 0:44:40So how did you find the schools?

0:44:40 > 0:44:44Kara was 10, 11 when she moved over here and she really enjoys it.

0:44:44 > 0:44:49It's really easy to make friends cos everyone's so nice.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51They're just so welcoming.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54She makes friends really easily. She's always made friends.

0:44:54 > 0:44:58You're quite a friendly person, so... And Amy's the same.

0:44:58 > 0:45:03And Andrew just doesn't stop talking, so everybody loves Andrew.

0:45:03 > 0:45:07Andrew's already found a new pal.

0:45:07 > 0:45:10They're getting on like a house on fire.

0:45:10 > 0:45:12New mate from New Zealand.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15One from New Zealand, three from Scotland.

0:45:17 > 0:45:20It just seems a friendlier place. Everybody you meet's got a smile on their face.

0:45:20 > 0:45:27I'd like the kids to grow into this, you know, and start their lives like this,

0:45:27 > 0:45:31and hopefully they wouldn't have all the rat race and the roundabout that we've had.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33I would say there's a turnaround from before we left

0:45:33 > 0:45:37when it was a definite no, they don't even want to get on the plane.

0:45:37 > 0:45:39Hoe many friends do you have?

0:45:39 > 0:45:41Whereas now, they are,

0:45:41 > 0:45:44"No, this is a good thing that we could be doing."

0:45:44 > 0:45:48So, as long as we keep everything... and I keep them

0:45:48 > 0:45:53interested in it, I'd say there's a good chance we could do this.

0:45:53 > 0:45:56Although Leslie's starting to really like the place

0:45:56 > 0:45:58and has warmed to the people,

0:45:58 > 0:46:02she's still struggling with the thoughts of leaving

0:46:02 > 0:46:04friends and family back in the UK.

0:46:04 > 0:46:08If we sold up and we moved here and we had everything here, you could have the same sort of lifestyle.

0:46:08 > 0:46:11It's such a big sacrifice in order to have that.

0:46:11 > 0:46:15You're just losing all your family and that's just...

0:46:15 > 0:46:18- You're not losing family. - You are, really, cos they're not going to talk to us!

0:46:18 > 0:46:21But Steve feels differently to Leslie.

0:46:21 > 0:46:25You cannae sit in your own wee life back where you were

0:46:25 > 0:46:27just because of friends and family.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30You've got to do what's right for your wee family unit.

0:46:30 > 0:46:34Leaving loved ones behind is always going to be hard, but

0:46:34 > 0:46:37the prospect of making new friends in New Zealand might make it easier.

0:46:37 > 0:46:41- How do they feel?- After three...

0:46:42 > 0:46:44One...

0:46:44 > 0:46:45two...

0:46:46 > 0:46:47three.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52Ah, three against two. We win.

0:46:54 > 0:46:55Turn up for the books.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02All week, the Clelland family have been

0:47:02 > 0:47:04undecided about the move down under.

0:47:04 > 0:47:08Will hearing messages from friends and family back home

0:47:08 > 0:47:10help them make that final decision?

0:47:10 > 0:47:13We've given them a DVD to watch.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16- Hiya.- Hi, how are you all doing?

0:47:17 > 0:47:20Steven's still my little lad.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23He works hard. He's a very hard worker.

0:47:23 > 0:47:27He worries me at times, how hard he does work.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30He looks after his family, he'll do anything for anybody.

0:47:30 > 0:47:32If he can do it, he'll do it for you.

0:47:32 > 0:47:36He's just a nice guy.

0:47:36 > 0:47:38Leslie's...she's quite family-orientated.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41She's quite keen to keep her family happy. She's a good mother.

0:47:41 > 0:47:43She's quite a good laugh.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46She's quite funny, quite witty. She's a good sister.

0:47:46 > 0:47:51She is. She's always there to listen to you and talk to you and we kind of bounce off each other sometimes.

0:47:51 > 0:47:53She's always good. She's always there for you.

0:47:53 > 0:47:57Sometimes she'll come through and take me to the shopping centre,

0:47:57 > 0:48:00get my shopping and that, you know, and keep me going.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Oh, she's brilliant.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05She's just like one of my own.

0:48:05 > 0:48:09We've always got on, and I think the world of her.

0:48:09 > 0:48:11Lauren is a comedian.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13She is, she's a comedian.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15She can have you laughing.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18She's really fun and she's a really good friend,

0:48:18 > 0:48:20so I don't really want her to move to New Zealand.

0:48:20 > 0:48:24I like just calling for her and

0:48:24 > 0:48:28just having her around and going to school with her and...

0:48:29 > 0:48:33She's dead popular. Really, really popular.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35Amy's a thinker.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37You always know when Amy's looking at you,

0:48:37 > 0:48:41she's trying to size you up and trying to figure you out, you know!

0:48:41 > 0:48:43Andrew is...

0:48:43 > 0:48:44Andrew is so funny. He's just so funny.

0:48:44 > 0:48:48He's a really clever wee boy. He picks up things really quickly

0:48:48 > 0:48:50and I think he's going to be quite bright.

0:48:50 > 0:48:53Leslie's not got really anybody

0:48:53 > 0:48:55over there because, if she's here,

0:48:55 > 0:48:57she can fall her back on her mum,

0:48:57 > 0:49:00my mum, the sisters, myself.

0:49:00 > 0:49:03So I think she's thinking she'll be quite lonely over there.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06I think she's a wee bit frightened that she might like it.

0:49:06 > 0:49:09It's so far away, it's not as if you can jump on a bus

0:49:09 > 0:49:12and come away for the weekend!

0:49:12 > 0:49:14It'd be a long time. It's a long...

0:49:14 > 0:49:16It's far away.

0:49:16 > 0:49:19Too far away. Don't like it at all.

0:49:19 > 0:49:22But when it comes down to it, you've got to do what you really want to do.

0:49:22 > 0:49:25There's always going to be something that you don't want to leave.

0:49:25 > 0:49:29But it's whether she's going to be strong enough or willing to do that,

0:49:29 > 0:49:32and that's all going to be down to them, really.

0:49:32 > 0:49:36But from my point of view, I probably wouldn't want her to go, no.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41I wouldn't like to think that they're not going to be here.

0:49:41 > 0:49:47I've never really experienced any of my children and grandchildren

0:49:47 > 0:49:49being away apart from like a holiday.

0:49:49 > 0:49:55And...I don't know how I would feel. I don't want them to go.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59You're going to have me bubbling.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04Hi, Lauren, I hope you're having a nice time in New Zealand.

0:50:04 > 0:50:09I'm missing you lots and I really don't want you to move there, cos you're such a good friend.

0:50:09 > 0:50:11Erm...bye!

0:50:11 > 0:50:14If it was me, I would just go for it.

0:50:14 > 0:50:17If you want to do it, this is the time to do it.

0:50:17 > 0:50:21And if you do it, good luck and best wishes.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25I miss you. I wish you were here.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27I don't want you to go.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29I'll be lost without you.

0:50:31 > 0:50:34I'll miss you loads. You know I will.

0:50:34 > 0:50:38And...and before I start crying again,

0:50:38 > 0:50:42I'm going to say...take care, I love youse all.

0:50:42 > 0:50:43Bye.

0:50:52 > 0:50:56Is it sad to see Nan on the telly and Gran?

0:51:01 > 0:51:04I suppose it is... It's always going to be.

0:51:04 > 0:51:08You'd do most things but you don't want to hurt anybody, you don't want to make anybody upset.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13I hate to do it and I'd hate to upset anybody

0:51:13 > 0:51:18but...at the end of the day, if that's what we want to do,

0:51:18 > 0:51:20then, you know...

0:51:20 > 0:51:23You will... You can talk to them on the phone, you can...

0:51:23 > 0:51:27go on the webcams and talk to them pretty much every day if you wanted.

0:51:27 > 0:51:32It's just, you're not going to be in the same room, that's all.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34- But...- Like seeing my sister,

0:51:34 > 0:51:38cos we spend a lot of time together at the weekends

0:51:38 > 0:51:42and we go shopping and she pops in, and I wouldn't have that.

0:51:42 > 0:51:47And we are very close cos we are a small family, so we've always been a close family.

0:51:47 > 0:51:52We just can't please everybody so someone's got to suffer, so...I don't know.

0:51:58 > 0:52:01Aw, that's the hardest part.

0:52:01 > 0:52:06For Leslie, it's always been about whether she can leave her family.

0:52:06 > 0:52:11The Clellands' week in Auckland has been an emotional roller-coaster.

0:52:13 > 0:52:16It's the end of the Clellands' experiment in New Zealand and it

0:52:16 > 0:52:20showed them what life down under could give them.

0:52:20 > 0:52:23Beautiful. Beautiful place.

0:52:23 > 0:52:27But Leslie was shocked by the first house they saw.

0:52:27 > 0:52:28I would be terrified in here at night.

0:52:28 > 0:52:31This reminds me of every horror film I ever saw in the '80s.

0:52:31 > 0:52:32We'll be going home if we get this!

0:52:32 > 0:52:37- I would not move for this at all. This wouldn't...- No.

0:52:37 > 0:52:40And the girls were unsure about moving down under.

0:52:40 > 0:52:43I like the house, but I wouldn't live in it

0:52:43 > 0:52:45cos I don't really want to live here.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48I would like to live in New Zealand

0:52:48 > 0:52:52cos it looks like a nice place, but I can't really make my mind up.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55Steve loved his time spent at work.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57It's the same equipment.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01Strange - it's the other side of the world and it's the exact same equipment.

0:53:01 > 0:53:04But the drastically reduced amount of equity

0:53:04 > 0:53:05in their UK property came as a shock.

0:53:05 > 0:53:09If we did want to move, then we doubt we could sell just now.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12It's just not the right time. It would be too much of a loss.

0:53:12 > 0:53:14It's been a week of ups and downs for Leslie,

0:53:14 > 0:53:19with the wrench on leaving loved one constantly playing on her mind.

0:53:22 > 0:53:26I was scared to come because I did think I might like it,

0:53:26 > 0:53:31and I do like it, I really do like it. But, again, it's still the same.

0:53:31 > 0:53:33It's the same thing. It's the families, especially my mum.

0:53:33 > 0:53:38My sister, Steven's sister and Steven's mum - they'll be OK in a way

0:53:38 > 0:53:43that they can come over, but my mum won't be able to come over here.

0:53:43 > 0:53:48These are issues we're going to have to try and figure out, I suppose.

0:53:48 > 0:53:51Actually, Amy's easy-osey, isn't she?

0:53:51 > 0:53:56I think Amy would be fine. I think Andrew's fine, and Lauren at the moment...

0:53:56 > 0:53:59We were talking the other day there, and she was asking,

0:53:59 > 0:54:01"Where are we going to live?" It wasnae, "Oh, if we move".

0:54:01 > 0:54:04It's, "Where are we going to live? And when are we moving?

0:54:04 > 0:54:06"Right, can we go and have a look at the schools?

0:54:06 > 0:54:09"Can we go and have a look at the uniforms?"

0:54:09 > 0:54:12So Lauren's frame of mind at the moment is she's moving.

0:54:14 > 0:54:16But do we like it enough to live here?

0:54:16 > 0:54:18I don't know. I still don't know.

0:54:19 > 0:54:21Difficult.

0:54:25 > 0:54:29- We'll see.- Stopped you in your track there, didn't I?

0:54:29 > 0:54:32I thought it was done and dusted there!

0:54:32 > 0:54:34Ah, never underestimate me.

0:54:40 > 0:54:42But now it's crunch time.

0:54:42 > 0:54:46Will Leslie and the children give Steve the answer he's looking for?

0:54:46 > 0:54:48So I...

0:54:48 > 0:54:51I think I'm just going to choose Scotland.

0:54:51 > 0:54:54That's a bit of a surprise. Will the others follow suit?

0:54:54 > 0:54:57I really liked the houses and

0:54:57 > 0:54:59I really liked the beach,

0:54:59 > 0:55:03so I'll choose New Zealand.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05It's quite hard to choose, cos I like New Zealand and

0:55:05 > 0:55:10everything about it, but also I quite like living in Scotland.

0:55:10 > 0:55:14But I think I'm just going to have to choose New Zealand.

0:55:16 > 0:55:18It is a lovely place, it's a beautiful place

0:55:18 > 0:55:22and I think we could really set up home here and be really happy,

0:55:22 > 0:55:25and be a really happy family so, on that...

0:55:25 > 0:55:26definitely New Zealand.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30But now it all rests on Leslie.

0:55:31 > 0:55:35I've really enjoyed my experience in New Zealand. It's been a bit of an eye-opener this week.

0:55:35 > 0:55:40It just comes down to what's best for my family, this family,

0:55:40 > 0:55:44or what's best for my Scottish family, and on this occasion,

0:55:44 > 0:55:47I think I'll choose New Zealand.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50I've got to make a decision and stick to it, so I think I have.

0:55:50 > 0:55:55I do think it'd be better for us as a family, and it's better for the kids.

0:55:55 > 0:55:58But as long as they're happy, we'll be happy.

0:55:59 > 0:56:03Despite being disappointed at the price they could get for their house

0:56:03 > 0:56:10in the UK, the Clellands have all found something that life down under could offer them.

0:56:10 > 0:56:16It looks like Steven has managed to persuade his family to start a new life in New Zealand.

0:56:19 > 0:56:24Join us again next time, when we find out what happens when

0:56:24 > 0:56:28another British family has to decide whether they're wanted down under.
