0:00:05 > 0:00:11Welcome to Wanted Down Under, the show that catapults a British family right across to the other
0:00:11 > 0:00:16side of the world to help them make the biggest decision of their life.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20Whether to stay in the UK or to move to Australia.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23Tanya Wilson dreams of a new life Down Under.
0:00:23 > 0:00:28I've got a good life here, but I still think there is more.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31It's an opportunity not to be missed.
0:00:31 > 0:00:35Husband, Jon, wants the best for his family.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39The boys are getting bigger now, I don't want to miss any more of their childhood.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41You'd be doing them a big favour if you came.
0:00:41 > 0:00:46But leaving family behind them to make the move could tear everything in two.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48ON VIDEO 'I thought, if she moved,'
0:00:48 > 0:00:51hopefully it would be closer.
0:00:51 > 0:00:52How do you feel about moving?
0:00:52 > 0:00:55I don't know. Just don't even go there.
0:00:55 > 0:00:59At the moment it is 50/50 whether I come or stay,
0:00:59 > 0:01:01I really don't know what way I'm going to go.
0:01:24 > 0:01:28Australia is still popular with Brits wanting to emigrate.
0:01:28 > 0:01:33With its population of just over 21 million and its agreeable climate,
0:01:33 > 0:01:36it provides many with their ideal lifestyle.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40For people under 45 with a skill in demand it could be a realistic
0:01:40 > 0:01:48option to make the move, but, if you've never even set foot Down Under, it's a massive challenge.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52We've given another British family the opportunity
0:01:52 > 0:01:57to spend a week Down Under, to see if it's all they dreamt it would be.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01After that, they'll have to make a decision, one way or the other,
0:02:01 > 0:02:05to stay in the UK or to move to Australia.
0:02:05 > 0:02:11Jon and Tanya Wilson, along with their two boys, 13-year-old Calum and 12-year-old Owen,
0:02:11 > 0:02:17are about to leave their home in Liverpool to try out what life would be like in Australia.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24The Wilsons have long considered the possibility of emigrating.
0:02:24 > 0:02:31As an active family with aspirations of a better life, they think a move Down Under might be the answer.
0:02:31 > 0:02:39I want to go to Australia, basically to start a new life and improve the one we've got here.
0:02:39 > 0:02:44We've got a good life here, but I think there is more and better to do.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47We think it's going to be better for the boys.
0:02:47 > 0:02:49Once they leave school, there will be more opportunities for them.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51And the boys aren't shy.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55When Mum and Dad told us we might be going to Australia, I just said,
0:02:55 > 0:02:57"Mum, when can I start packing?"
0:02:57 > 0:03:03I'm just going to like the new standard of living, a new lifestyle, hopefully better.
0:03:03 > 0:03:09But for Tanya, this would mean leaving her younger sister, Amy, a new mum herself.
0:03:09 > 0:03:14Following a family illness, Tanya cared for and helped raise Amy.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18She's very close to Amy, it is more like mother and daughter.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21They are very, very close.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23As you can see she's already started crying,
0:03:23 > 0:03:26we are only talking about it, we haven't even gone anywhere yet.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29She's too close, really.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32If it was possible, we would be glued at the hip.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36She's been everything to me since she was born.
0:03:36 > 0:03:40The effects of a move Down Under aren't lost on the boys either.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44If we moved over there, we wouldn't be part,
0:03:44 > 0:03:47kind of be part of the family anymore.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50We wouldn't see them at all.
0:03:50 > 0:03:55Jon would also have to say goodbye to all of his friends at work.
0:03:55 > 0:03:59A baker by trade, Jon has worked in his local supermarket for 16 years
0:03:59 > 0:04:03and it's a profession in demand in Australia.
0:04:03 > 0:04:08The job I'd like to get over there would still be in baking, but I would like to get out
0:04:08 > 0:04:12of the supermarket, see if I can still hack it in a smaller bakery.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15That's where I started. Go back to my roots, as they say.
0:04:15 > 0:04:20A baker by day he might be, but by night, Jon is part of a family dynasty.
0:04:20 > 0:04:26If they make the move, one activity the Wilsons are determined not to give up is karate.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30When we go out to Australia, one of the added benefits is that
0:04:30 > 0:04:37karate that we do here, out there, that is where it was founded.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40So we will still be able to train together as a family.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44The Wilsons would have to leave behind all of the friends they have
0:04:44 > 0:04:48made through karate, but Jon's main concern is his mum and dad.
0:04:48 > 0:04:56They're both in their 70s, me mum is quite fit and healthy, but me dad is in frail health.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59It does worry me.
0:04:59 > 0:05:03At the moment, if anything goes wrong we are only around the corner.
0:05:03 > 0:05:09If we go to Australia, when we get on the plane it could be the last time we see me mum and dad.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12The Wilsons have some difficult decisions to make in the coming week,
0:05:12 > 0:05:17but Jon's trying to keep in mind what's most important.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20I've got the time, I've got the boys. That's my family.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24That's what me mum always says, it's your family, that comes first, no-one else matters.
0:05:24 > 0:05:30When your mum tells you that, you've got to believe that, cos your mum's never wrong.
0:05:32 > 0:05:37For their week Down Under, we're sending the Wilsons to Perth, the capital of Western Australia.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Situated between the bush and the western seaboard,
0:05:40 > 0:05:44Perth has a relatively small commercial centre,
0:05:44 > 0:05:47busy during the day with office workers, shoppers and diners.
0:05:47 > 0:05:54This area is surrounded by city suburbs, offering a mixture of apartment and town house living.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57The suburbs spread out north and south along the coast.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01The further you go, the more you can get for your property pound.
0:06:03 > 0:06:08We found three possible lifestyles for our family,
0:06:08 > 0:06:11each one offering a brand new way of life for them to
0:06:11 > 0:06:18try on their budget, but, which one will be the most suitable?
0:06:18 > 0:06:21The Wilsons could make the most of the shops and cafes
0:06:21 > 0:06:25on their doorstep with a home in one of the inner-city suburbs.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28There will be plenty of potential work options nearby for Jon,
0:06:28 > 0:06:32who could expect to earn about £400 a week.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36But property close to the city centre doesn't come cheap.
0:06:36 > 0:06:43Stylish three-bedroomed apartments such as this one in east Perth cost £360,000.
0:06:43 > 0:06:49The Wilsons could find more affordable options but a lack of space might be an issue.
0:06:49 > 0:06:57So, very different from their life in the UK, but what about the second option?
0:06:57 > 0:07:00You could find the perfect combination of sun and sea
0:07:00 > 0:07:03in one of Perth's many coastal districts.
0:07:03 > 0:07:08For Jon, prospective work would be a 15-minute drive away,
0:07:08 > 0:07:12but coastal property within a short commute to the city comes at a high price.
0:07:12 > 0:07:18Four-bedroom houses like this can cost more than £500,000.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22It could be a stretch too far for Jon and Tanya.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24However, affluent suburbs like Sorrento boast friendly,
0:07:24 > 0:07:29well-established communities with nearby yachting clubs which would provide
0:07:29 > 0:07:33the perfect opportunity for the Wilsons to enjoy a leisurely lifestyle.
0:07:33 > 0:07:40That all looks very inviting, but what about the third option?
0:07:40 > 0:07:42Travel to the outer suburbs of Perth
0:07:42 > 0:07:46and you can get a three-bedroom, two-bathroom character cottage
0:07:46 > 0:07:49like this one in Green Mount for £210,000.
0:07:49 > 0:07:54With parks and open spaces, Green Mount offers great views over the city,
0:07:54 > 0:07:58which would be a 20-minute drive away from Jon's potential work.
0:07:58 > 0:08:05With this option, the Wilsons could find themselves an affordable family home in a picturesque neighbourhood,
0:08:05 > 0:08:09only a stone's throw away from the Swan River.
0:08:09 > 0:08:14So three very different possibilities for our family to try.
0:08:14 > 0:08:19But which one did we decide would suit them best?
0:08:19 > 0:08:23With the short commute and reasonably priced housing,
0:08:23 > 0:08:27we thought life in the country would best suit the Wilsons.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30We have lined up Jon with a job to try out...
0:08:30 > 0:08:31It's a long time since I've done this.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33..and a selection of housing options.
0:08:33 > 0:08:35It's deceiving, isn't it?
0:08:35 > 0:08:39And they get a view of Aussie lifestyle they'll never forget.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41I'm not sure whose bright idea this was...Jon?
0:08:43 > 0:08:49But, will it be enough to help them make the biggest decision of their lives?
0:08:49 > 0:08:52I really don't know what way I'm going to go.
0:08:52 > 0:08:56The Wilsons are heading off for the week to sample life Down Under.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58Tanya and Jon hope Australia will provide
0:08:58 > 0:09:03the fresh start they're looking for, and Owen's been packed for months!
0:09:03 > 0:09:06Perth has a lot to live up to in the Wilsons' eyes.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08They have a busy week ahead of them.
0:09:08 > 0:09:15After a 9,000 mile journey and 18 hours in the air, they are relieved to be on terra firma.
0:09:15 > 0:09:21That was the worst landing ever. It was like being on a roller-coaster. Just glad to be down now.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24A long journey, very long. A bit tired, but we're here now.
0:09:24 > 0:09:29It seems that Owen is not cut out for long-distance flying.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31I've got a numb bum.
0:09:31 > 0:09:36At least Owen won't have to sit in the car for long as the journey is almost over.
0:09:37 > 0:09:44The Wilsons are staying in a four-bedroom house in the northern suburb of Currambine,
0:09:44 > 0:09:48only a 20 minute drive from Jon's work and five minutes from the beach.
0:09:48 > 0:09:53House-proud Tanya is keen not to ruin any first impressions.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55Don't forget to wipe your feet, boys.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58The rain is just as wet here as it is at home.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01That's all right. No telly, yet, mate.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05Don't worry, boys, I'm sure we'll find you one later.
0:10:05 > 0:10:10Off the front reception room is the master bedroom with en suite.
0:10:10 > 0:10:15And jet-lagged Owen is happy to make the most of the first bed he finds.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17Get off the bed, it's not bedtime yet!
0:10:17 > 0:10:22Behind the master bedroom is an open plan dining, kitchen and living area.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25There, you see, dinner at the table for you, mister.
0:10:25 > 0:10:27Oh, this is nice.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30- The first time you've seen your mum in a kitchen!- Look!
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Dishwasher, your chains are broken.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35Thank goodness for mod cons, hey, Jon?
0:10:35 > 0:10:41A family home like this with four bedrooms would cost about £250,000.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Tanya and Jon are impressed by the size.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47Got it all screened up.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50- This is almost as big as the living room.- It is. Nice.
0:10:50 > 0:10:54With the canopy you could sit out here anyway. Even though it's raining, it's not cold.
0:10:54 > 0:10:57No, it's not cold. It would be nice in the summer.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01Get off!
0:11:01 > 0:11:03That wasn't very nice.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05Never mind, hey?
0:11:05 > 0:11:07Air conditioning!
0:11:12 > 0:11:13Soaked!
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Well, Mum and Dad certainly seem glad to be here,
0:11:16 > 0:11:19even if they weren't expecting fun and games in the rain.
0:11:19 > 0:11:25As Owen's wishes come true, Tanya and Jon's thoughts turn to the week ahead.
0:11:25 > 0:11:29- This week's important to us. - It's gonna be an eye-opener.
0:11:29 > 0:11:34I suppose I was a bit worried, but coming over, it's...
0:11:34 > 0:11:38- You're here, now, so.- Yeah, I'm here now, so the nerves have gone.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42Now the nerves have gone, see what the job entails, see what I've got to do.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?
0:11:50 > 0:11:53Back in the UK, Tanya and Jon live in a four-bedroom house
0:11:53 > 0:11:59on the outskirts of Liverpool which they bought in 1994 for £31,000.
0:11:59 > 0:12:06In Australia, they want a three bedroom house for about £160,000, depending on what work Jon can find
0:12:06 > 0:12:09and what they can get for their UK property.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13We found three suitable homes for sale.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16The first is in Camillo, an older inland suburb.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20There is a park at the end of the road for the boys to have a kick about.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23It's only a 30-minute drive from Jon's potential work.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27This four-bedroom property is on the market for £170,000 -
0:12:27 > 0:12:29just over the Wilsons' budget.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33So, with a bit of negotiation, they should be able to afford it.
0:12:37 > 0:12:41- That doesn't look too bad already, does it?- The garden's nice.- Lovely.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44The first impressions are good.
0:12:48 > 0:12:49Nice entrance, isn't it?
0:12:49 > 0:12:54This is nice, I like this room. Mellow.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56I quite like the archways you come through.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59- The kitchen's nice. - A fair-sized kitchen.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02I quite like this.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04I like the integrated fridge.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07Somebody's been reading the estate agent brochures!
0:13:07 > 0:13:09Now, mind that step, oops.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13Wow! This is deceiving, this is.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16It leads into another room again.
0:13:16 > 0:13:20Tanya and Jon soon see the potential of the next room.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22This is where youse would be, out of my way.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25- You wouldn't have to see them for a couple of hours.- No!
0:13:25 > 0:13:29And if we could lock the door on them, that would be even better.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32Leading off the playroom is the first of the bedrooms.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36I don't know if it would be a master bedroom or a kid's room.
0:13:36 > 0:13:37It's massive for a bedroom.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42This is kind of like a dressing room.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45You could always turn into a little boxroom.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48A guest room. Yeah, big enough for a guest room.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51Isn't it? Or for my walk-in wardrobe.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53Not enough room for your shoes.
0:13:53 > 0:13:58Tanya will be pleased to see there's plenty of storage space in the next room.
0:13:58 > 0:13:59Built-in wardrobes.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01And it is still spacious.
0:14:01 > 0:14:07It seems bit dark, but that is probably because you have the veranda at the front, but it's nice.
0:14:07 > 0:14:11After a quick look at the rest of the house, the Wilsons are keen
0:14:11 > 0:14:14to check out something they've spotted in the back garden.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18Wow! Look at this.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21- You've got your swimming pool, look at that.- Wow!
0:14:21 > 0:14:24- Whose job is it going to be to clean this?- Yours!
0:14:24 > 0:14:25Oh, thanks(!)
0:14:25 > 0:14:26Just like everything else.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28Never mind, Jon.
0:14:28 > 0:14:29Oh, it's freezing.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31It's winter, dear, winter.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34You still have the rest of the garden.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36This is really nice.
0:14:36 > 0:14:42As well as the pool, there is an al fresco dining area and a fruit and vegetable plot.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45I could see myself sitting out here having a beer. I like this.
0:14:45 > 0:14:46The price isn't too bad, either.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48No, what was it, 339?
0:14:48 > 0:14:50It is probably about £170,000 at home.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53That is good.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56Especially with a swimming pool.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58- A fair-sized garden. - Three bedrooms.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01I do like this.
0:15:01 > 0:15:05While the boys take another look around, Jon and Tanya discuss finances.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08- Would you live here?- Yeah.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10Quite easy. We couldn't afford this back home.
0:15:10 > 0:15:15No. The point of fact, just having a swimming pool in the back, that would put on thousands.
0:15:15 > 0:15:20It looks like this is ideal.
0:15:20 > 0:15:24Well, that went down well, let's hope we haven't peaked too soon.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29Property two is further south in the suburb of Parmelia.
0:15:29 > 0:15:32More of an established neighbourhood, it's green and leafy
0:15:32 > 0:15:36with open spaces and areas of natural scrubland.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39Although this would mean a 40-minute commute to Jon's potential work,
0:15:39 > 0:15:43you do get more for your money further out in the suburbs.
0:15:43 > 0:15:45On the market for £160,000,
0:15:45 > 0:15:48this property is just within the Wilson's budget.
0:15:48 > 0:15:50This room's quite nice.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53It's quite deceiving.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55What would they make of the kitchen?
0:15:55 > 0:15:57Wow!
0:15:57 > 0:15:59That's a big kitchen, isn't it?
0:15:59 > 0:16:00Enough room for my mince pies.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04The table in the middle, I don't know about that, I might have to
0:16:04 > 0:16:09do something alternative there, but it's a nice big kitchen, I like this.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11- But if they think that room's spacious...- This is big.
0:16:11 > 0:16:15This is a big room, isn't it?
0:16:15 > 0:16:19You could have this as your lounge, effectively, couldn't you?
0:16:19 > 0:16:24Just so you're not even at the front of the house. You could come and kick back in here.
0:16:24 > 0:16:28So everyone likes the living area, but what about the sleeping quarters?
0:16:28 > 0:16:30- This is probably me and your mum's room.- This is nice.
0:16:30 > 0:16:36The master bedroom is a decent size, and has fitted wardrobes, but it's a different matter for the boys.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39This is nice, but a bit small.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41A bit cramped.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43That's all right. This is your room, Owen!
0:16:43 > 0:16:44No, thanks.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47Owen might want to rethink that when he sees next door.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50So there is only one big bedroom and two small rooms.
0:16:50 > 0:16:56- This is a small room. By the time you get a wardrobe in... - There will be nowhere to walk.
0:16:56 > 0:16:58Will the outside get a better reaction?
0:17:01 > 0:17:04Wow, this is really magnificent.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07This is the sheltered entertaining area. The swimming pool is missing
0:17:07 > 0:17:11but you can see yourself sitting back and relaxing.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13There's me rotary washing line.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15Permanent fixtures in these houses, aren't they?
0:17:15 > 0:17:19The lack of a pool doesn't seem to be much of an issue, but...
0:17:19 > 0:17:24I prefer the other one. This has a bigger garden but the other one was so much nicer.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27The bedrooms were bigger. That's my thing.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29- So, house number one so far.- Yeah.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32OK, then, a joint decision.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35Yeah, makes a change, doesn't it?
0:17:35 > 0:17:40So, Tanya and Jon are in agreement and property one is the clear favourite.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44Time to see if we can even the odds with house number three.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46The last property is in Ellenbrook.
0:17:46 > 0:17:53Reclaimed from the open scrubland that surrounds it, it is only 20 minutes from Jon's potential work.
0:17:53 > 0:17:58This brand new northern suburb is so new the shopping centre is still being built.
0:17:58 > 0:18:02It's a family friendly area with parks and open spaces.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05This three-bedroom, two-bathroom property
0:18:05 > 0:18:08is on the market for £180,000.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10It is just above the Wilsons' budget,
0:18:10 > 0:18:14but something that they could aspire to in the future.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16This is a nice room.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20I like it. It is big enough for what we would want.
0:18:20 > 0:18:21So far so good.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25- It's not too bad. - This is nice and big, isn't it?
0:18:25 > 0:18:30- No built in wardrobe - oh, yeah, behind the door.- This is my room.
0:18:30 > 0:18:34It's an en suite, it's Mummy's room!
0:18:34 > 0:18:36I don't think you'll win that one, Owen.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40So what do they make of the contemporary, open plan living?
0:18:40 > 0:18:42- So this is nice.- Yeah.
0:18:42 > 0:18:44What do you think of the open plan?
0:18:44 > 0:18:49It's all right. You can't shut the noise out, but, it's light and airy.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51What about the rest of the house?
0:18:51 > 0:18:56It's done out like a study, but it's big enough for a bedroom and/or a study.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59It's not too small. Your room?
0:18:59 > 0:19:01Probably because it is already messy.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04At last, we've found a home for Owen.
0:19:04 > 0:19:09After a quick look round at the last bedroom, it is time to see what they make of the outside space.
0:19:11 > 0:19:12That's nice.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Their hopes are high.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16This is nice.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18You can smell the honeysuckle.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20Oh, dear.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22Yeah.
0:19:22 > 0:19:26Oh dear. There is not much more to be said.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29The house is good, but the garden lets the house down.
0:19:29 > 0:19:33Can we lift this house up and put it with the other garden, or bring the other garden here?
0:19:33 > 0:19:37If we could do that, I would bring my house from home, but we can't.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40Oh dear, property three has not lived up to expectations,
0:19:40 > 0:19:43and it's given the Wilsons lots to think about.
0:19:43 > 0:19:48I haven't been disappointed, but I haven't been thrilled to bits.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51My house in Liverpool I'm spoiled with,
0:19:51 > 0:19:57but the properties here they haven't got the storage space that I think a family needs to contain its memories.
0:19:57 > 0:19:59That's the one disappointing aspect I found in all three.
0:19:59 > 0:20:05It has made me think about the house in the UK, so I've got some thinking to do now.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10We've shown the Wilsons three properties in Perth.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12The first house was in Camillo.
0:20:12 > 0:20:19It was just above their budget at £170,000, but they loved the living areas with the garden and pool.
0:20:19 > 0:20:24The second house at £160,000 was within their budget, and although
0:20:24 > 0:20:28they liked the kitchen, they decided that the bedrooms were too small.
0:20:28 > 0:20:32The third property was a bit more expensive at £180,000,
0:20:32 > 0:20:39and they liked the light and bright contemporary features, but the lack of outside space was a big issue.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43It's certainly been a day of delights and disappointments for the Wilsons,
0:20:43 > 0:20:48but has it been enough to choose Australia over their home in the UK?
0:20:48 > 0:20:50Time to vote.
0:20:51 > 0:20:55It's been a long day, thought-provoking, and...
0:20:55 > 0:21:00although it's hasn't been disappointing, some of the property has not been what we expected.
0:21:00 > 0:21:04The vote is ... Australia!
0:21:05 > 0:21:07And that has surprised me.
0:21:07 > 0:21:11- That surprised me, too. - It's not surprised me.
0:21:11 > 0:21:13Storage isn't everything, is it?
0:21:13 > 0:21:17I've got a rotary, so, Australia it is.
0:21:17 > 0:21:21But what if the Wilsons can't afford property one?
0:21:21 > 0:21:26Later, Jon and Tanya discover the current value of their UK home.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30It will put a lot of people off, this is.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33They find out how much everyday life Down Under will actually cost.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36It's a bit dearer over here.
0:21:36 > 0:21:40- Yeah, it looks it.- I don't think it's going to be as easy as we thought.
0:21:43 > 0:21:50The Wilsons' plan on owning property in Australia will depend on Jon finding a good job.
0:21:50 > 0:21:59Will he be able to earn enough to finance a move Down Under and the new lifestyle they dreamt about?
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Back home in Liverpool, Jon works as a baker in his local supermarket.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06He's been there 16 years.
0:22:06 > 0:22:11The people he works with have become like an extended family to him.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14Experienced bakers like Jon earn around £20,000 in the north-west of England,
0:22:14 > 0:22:19and as he would be the main bread winner, excuse the pun, it is vital
0:22:19 > 0:22:24that Jon finds a good position that pays as well as in the UK.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28Jon is up early to sample work in Perth and the pressure is on.
0:22:28 > 0:22:32With me being the main visa applicant,
0:22:32 > 0:22:37this job interview, or see what the job is like,
0:22:37 > 0:22:39it is pretty much important.
0:22:39 > 0:22:45If I don't like the job or my skills aren't up to standard, the whole move is off.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47I'm a bit anxious about the work.
0:22:49 > 0:22:56Tanya and the boys are spending some time together, exploring the delights of Perth's cafe culture.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58So what do you like the look of?
0:22:58 > 0:23:00Wow, look at the size of those Danish.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05Jon is visiting a bakery in Malaga in north Perth.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08It is vital that the day's work goes well.
0:23:08 > 0:23:14He is meeting owner Kingsley Sullivan, a producer of speciality breads.
0:23:14 > 0:23:19The bakery combines state-of-the-art equipment with time-honoured baking practices.
0:23:19 > 0:23:23About 70% of our production is in genuine sour dough bread.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27- Have you done much with real sour dough?- Not for a long time.
0:23:27 > 0:23:28- OK.- When I first started.- Really?
0:23:28 > 0:23:32Yeah, but with work being in the supermarkets it is bring it in the bag.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34There is no sour.
0:23:34 > 0:23:36These starters are now 16 years old.
0:23:36 > 0:23:40They have been in flour and water every day for 16 years.
0:23:40 > 0:23:45We use that, we use no commercial yeast in our sour dough breads at all.
0:23:45 > 0:23:50So this is genuine, real artisan bread-making.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53Kingsley shows Jon how it is done.
0:23:53 > 0:23:59As you can see, we have four mixers, two arms, with removable bowls,
0:23:59 > 0:24:02so when the dough is mixed we pull it off.
0:24:02 > 0:24:06You leave it in the bowl and it bulk ferments for two hours.
0:24:06 > 0:24:12In the UK, Jon works very long hours, so doesn't get much time to be with Tanya and the boys.
0:24:12 > 0:24:17She's hoping if they were to move to Australia, they would be able to
0:24:17 > 0:24:21- spend more quality time together. - Iced coffee,
0:24:21 > 0:24:25- I don't like the sound of that. - They have iced chocolate with ice-cream and whipped cream.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28- Are you guys ready to order? - Yep, we're getting there.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30Can we have a lemon slice, please?
0:24:30 > 0:24:34And I would like one of those long Danish twist things with the fruit.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36Yours isn't quite a local accent, is it?
0:24:36 > 0:24:40No, it's not. I've been in Australia for about three years, now.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44We moved from Taunton in Somerset.
0:24:44 > 0:24:49We don't miss the UK, because of how welcoming people are.
0:24:49 > 0:24:51It is hard. We still have family there. My parents are
0:24:51 > 0:24:57in Perth now and my brother is in Perth, but we have gained a new niece since we've been out here.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00Our best friend has had a boy, so we haven't seen them, but we'll visit next year.
0:25:00 > 0:25:08How about you? Are you excited about everything you'd be doing here in school, learning to surf?
0:25:08 > 0:25:13I think you actually learn how to surf in school, you actually get lessons.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15- So that's OK.- Yeah.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18Now I'm excited about going to school!
0:25:18 > 0:25:22Tanya knows, the more she enjoys Perth, the more of a dilemma
0:25:22 > 0:25:26she faces if she is going to decide to leave her family in the UK.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30Back in the bakery, Jon is getting stuck in.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33Will it stop automatically at the top? I won't go through the roof?
0:25:33 > 0:25:37Jon's been let loose on the dough, which, after two hours
0:25:37 > 0:25:42of bulk fermenting, is lifted up and tipped into a hopper.
0:25:42 > 0:25:45The bakery here is very different to what I'm used to.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49Back in the UK, I open a bag of concentrate, a block of yeast, a bag of flour,
0:25:49 > 0:25:53so it's totally an alien environment for me, but it's what I want to do.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56Something that I've wanted to get back to for many years.
0:25:56 > 0:26:01It's the way bread should be made, with a bit of love and a bit of care.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07But Tanya and the boys are more interested in the end results!
0:26:07 > 0:26:09- Enjoy.- Mmm.
0:26:11 > 0:26:12Is it all right?
0:26:12 > 0:26:15Better than your dad could make?
0:26:16 > 0:26:18Is that nice and warm?
0:26:19 > 0:26:22- Yeah. Yum.- "Yum"!
0:26:22 > 0:26:26Wait until your dad finds out we have come to a pastry shop whilst he was working.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28He is going to be disappointed.
0:26:28 > 0:26:32- A bit mean, isn't it? - I might save a bit for Dad...
0:26:32 > 0:26:33- Nah.- Nah!
0:26:33 > 0:26:37Jon will just have to make his own.
0:26:37 > 0:26:39It's a long time since I've done this, yeah?
0:26:39 > 0:26:42It feels good, though.
0:26:44 > 0:26:46Jon finds he is a bit out of practice.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48It is taking me a while, I'm a bit heavy-handed.
0:26:48 > 0:26:51But he soon gets up to speed.
0:26:53 > 0:26:57Meanwhile, Tanya and the boys have come down to a local park to have
0:26:57 > 0:27:03a kick about, but, while Owen and Calum burn up some energy, Tanya can't help thinking about home.
0:27:03 > 0:27:09Even if Jon comes back from work and he's had a really good day
0:27:09 > 0:27:11and the boys are all for coming to Australia...
0:27:13 > 0:27:19..I know that I've still got to make a decision to leave Amy, leave my brothers and sisters.
0:27:19 > 0:27:24Everything needs a lot of thought and thinking is all I have done.
0:27:24 > 0:27:30After working alongside Kingsley's team, Jon is hoping that he has cut the mustard.
0:27:30 > 0:27:31How did you find that?
0:27:31 > 0:27:34Totally different, but I really enjoyed it.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36How easy is it for me to get a job out in Australia?
0:27:36 > 0:27:39What we're after is really, really good bakers.
0:27:39 > 0:27:43If you love what you do, if you're a passionate baker,
0:27:43 > 0:27:46you would have no trouble getting a job anywhere in Australia.
0:27:46 > 0:27:51That's great news, but Jon needs to know how the pay compares.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53What's the salary like in Australia?
0:27:53 > 0:27:59A good qualified baker should be looking for about 800 a week.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02That is between 40,000 and 50,000 a year.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05That is based on a 37.5 hour week.
0:28:05 > 0:28:11In the UK, it is similar, on about £18,000 to £20,000, but that's on a 50-hour week.
0:28:11 > 0:28:16It is what Jon was wanting to hear, as that would mean more pay for less hours.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19That's what we want to come for, to spend more time as a family.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21The boys are getting bigger, now.
0:28:21 > 0:28:26Very soon they will say they don't want to go out with Dad today, they want to go out with the girls.
0:28:26 > 0:28:29I don't want to miss any more of their childhood.
0:28:29 > 0:28:33Well, I can tell you one thing about Australia, Jon, there's no better place to bring up children.
0:28:33 > 0:28:37You'd be doing them a big favour if you came.
0:28:37 > 0:28:41Jon's clearly excited about his work prospects Down Under,
0:28:41 > 0:28:45but Tanya is struggling to contemplate leaving her younger sister, Amy.
0:28:45 > 0:28:49They've been incredibly close ever since Amy was born.
0:28:49 > 0:28:54To Tanya it would be like leaving a daughter behind. It would be heart-wrenching.
0:28:54 > 0:28:58When I first told Amy that we were planning on emigrating to Australia,
0:28:58 > 0:29:02I had to tell her with her twin sister present.
0:29:02 > 0:29:05I knew for a fact she'd break down and she did.
0:29:08 > 0:29:10It will be hard.
0:29:10 > 0:29:12It will be hard.
0:29:23 > 0:29:25But she has said for us to go for it.
0:29:35 > 0:29:39Being a mum herself now, she wants the best for her daughter.
0:29:39 > 0:29:43And see understands that I want the best for my boys too.
0:29:45 > 0:29:49At the end of the day, Tanya's dreams of a better life for Owen and Calum
0:29:49 > 0:29:52rest on Jon finding good work.
0:29:52 > 0:29:55He seems to have been impressed by what he has seen so far.
0:29:55 > 0:29:57So how will he vote?
0:29:57 > 0:30:00It's been a really good day.
0:30:00 > 0:30:02I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
0:30:02 > 0:30:06The lads are a really good bunch of lads. My vote today is..
0:30:06 > 0:30:08Australia!
0:30:08 > 0:30:14Jon wants to make his dream of a life Down Under work, but later Tanya breaks under the pressure.
0:30:14 > 0:30:17How are you going to feel about leaving Amy?
0:30:17 > 0:30:20I don't know, just don't even go there.
0:30:20 > 0:30:21Oops, she's put out.
0:30:25 > 0:30:32For Jon and Tanya, a major selling point of Australia is its outdoor lifestyle.
0:30:32 > 0:30:35The Wilsons love being active as a family.
0:30:35 > 0:30:40So we thought we'd give them a sporting challenge they could all enjoy together.
0:30:43 > 0:30:47The Wilsons are used to having to make the most of their Liverpool garden.
0:30:47 > 0:30:51If they were to move to Australia, they would have amazing opportunities
0:30:51 > 0:30:57to use all of the outdoor pursuit facilities that are provided for the locals in cities like Perth.
0:30:57 > 0:31:00They have come to an activity centre at a marina.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08Owen, look at this!
0:31:10 > 0:31:11- It's good, isn't it?- Oh, yeah.
0:31:11 > 0:31:14The Wilsons will be putting themselves to the test
0:31:14 > 0:31:17on a challenging high ropes adventure course.
0:31:17 > 0:31:20The rest of the family are hoping that Dad will have more time to
0:31:20 > 0:31:25enjoy things like this with them if they were to move Down Under.
0:31:25 > 0:31:31Jon works 50 hours a week in the UK, making this kind of outing difficult to arrange.
0:31:31 > 0:31:35After comprehensive safety training and being fitted with harnessing and helmets,
0:31:35 > 0:31:40instructor Lorena Cruise Parker gives them the briefing they will need.
0:31:40 > 0:31:44Plucky Owen is the first to give it a go.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47- Come on, O. - Nearly there, now, step up.
0:31:47 > 0:31:49It's freezing down here.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Yeah!
0:31:52 > 0:31:55The Wilsons have to make their way across an impressive trail of rope bridges,
0:31:55 > 0:32:02netting and platforms suspended on an aerial circuit up to ten metres high.
0:32:02 > 0:32:05Owen is the one that we worry about when it comes to the outside activities.
0:32:05 > 0:32:07He is a bit of a worrier.
0:32:07 > 0:32:11If we come to Australia it will be really good to get Owen
0:32:11 > 0:32:15outside a bit more, encourage him to do a few more things,
0:32:15 > 0:32:20encourage him to join a few more clubs, give him a kick up the bum and see how he goes from there.
0:32:20 > 0:32:22Right, Owen.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26Just one more step, Owen...
0:32:26 > 0:32:28..and you're there.
0:32:29 > 0:32:33Jon brings up the rear and is keen not to lag behind.
0:32:36 > 0:32:39Calum seems to be taking to the Aussie adventure.
0:32:42 > 0:32:45I'm not sure whose bright idea this was, Jon?
0:32:45 > 0:32:48Is that you?
0:32:48 > 0:32:49I haven't touched it, honest.
0:32:49 > 0:32:51The wind is worse now.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59It comes to something when you are higher than the birds
0:32:59 > 0:33:03- and we don't have feathers. - The time to worry is when you're higher than the trees.
0:33:03 > 0:33:06Just behave, cos if you look below me, there is a tree!
0:33:06 > 0:33:09If they take a leap of faith and make the move,
0:33:09 > 0:33:13Tanya is hoping that the family's quality of life would improve.
0:33:13 > 0:33:17With the move to Australia, I'm hoping that the boys will
0:33:17 > 0:33:23get involved in more outdoor activities, there does seem to be a lot more on offer.
0:33:23 > 0:33:27When we came into the area and saw the amount of activities available,
0:33:27 > 0:33:31the boys were in awe and they wanted to do everything.
0:33:31 > 0:33:36It is certainly character building and the Wilsons help each other to the finish line...
0:33:36 > 0:33:38Well done.
0:33:38 > 0:33:40I enjoyed that.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43..where there is a much quicker, fun way of coming down.
0:33:49 > 0:33:50- Wow!- I don't fancy that.
0:33:50 > 0:33:54It's not something that the Wilsons are going to forget in a hurry.
0:33:54 > 0:34:00- You try it, because I ain't. - Legs up in the air. Hold on.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02Go on, Mum!
0:34:03 > 0:34:04Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
0:34:09 > 0:34:10Yeah!
0:34:13 > 0:34:16I can't go upside down.
0:34:17 > 0:34:21Perth, and Australia itself, is living up to my expectations,
0:34:21 > 0:34:24this is the sort of lifestyle that I'm looking for.
0:34:24 > 0:34:29- Just sit into it, and... oh, my- BLEEP.
0:34:34 > 0:34:35Well done!
0:34:38 > 0:34:42The lifestyle is a lot more than what I expected, it really is good.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44All the people we have met have been really friendly.
0:34:44 > 0:34:46We could do this, could really enjoy it.
0:34:46 > 0:34:51Jon's having a great time. A new life Down Under will be a challenge.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54It could be fun, but will they be doing it together?
0:34:56 > 0:34:59We've had a fantastic day out today.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02Everybody's enjoyed themselves.
0:35:02 > 0:35:06Scares and thrills, most definitely character-building.
0:35:06 > 0:35:11Today we'll be voting for...
0:35:11 > 0:35:13- Australia!- UK!
0:35:13 > 0:35:15Only kidding, Australia!
0:35:15 > 0:35:17You didn't fool us, Tanya.
0:35:17 > 0:35:23It's clear the Wilsons have all been impressed by their taste of active Aussie lifestyle, but, coming up,
0:35:23 > 0:35:31their views on a life Down Under are seriously put to the test, when they get messages from back home.
0:35:31 > 0:35:33So, I'm not going to go to the airport.
0:35:33 > 0:35:38I will do me crying here when they have gone. We are just hoping we can keep it in.
0:35:42 > 0:35:49If the Wilsons want to make the move to Australia, they have to be realistic about their finances.
0:35:49 > 0:35:54They will need to get a good price for their house back in Liverpool.
0:35:54 > 0:36:00In 1994, the Wilsons bought this four-bedroom house for £31,000.
0:36:02 > 0:36:06They estimate it is now worth about £110,000.
0:36:06 > 0:36:10But what's the true value in the current climate?
0:36:10 > 0:36:15We sent around two estate agents to assess the property.
0:36:15 > 0:36:20The Wilsons' dream of a life Down Under depend on a good valuation.
0:36:20 > 0:36:24We have a DVD to show them of the estate agents' findings.
0:36:29 > 0:36:31Your light's always on!
0:36:33 > 0:36:35OK, nice, big room.
0:36:36 > 0:36:39Good sized dining room. Multi-use.
0:36:39 > 0:36:41Interesting colour laminate.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43Cheeky monkey!
0:36:48 > 0:36:51Nice flooring. Character features.
0:36:51 > 0:36:55Nice, modern kitchen.
0:36:55 > 0:36:57Great for a family.
0:37:01 > 0:37:05Good-sized second bedroom, but it will have to be re-decorated, definitely.
0:37:05 > 0:37:10- Hey, that took me forever!- 'It could put a lot of people off, this.'
0:37:10 > 0:37:15'A spacious light bedroom, good size for wardrobes, great.'
0:37:15 > 0:37:17The garden is a mess.
0:37:18 > 0:37:23It's lived in, isn't it, more than anything. It's got to be lived in.
0:37:23 > 0:37:25This is a four-bedroom property, end terrace.
0:37:25 > 0:37:31It is on predominantly ex-council estate, which does have a negative impact on the valuation.
0:37:31 > 0:37:35They think it is worth £110,000.
0:37:35 > 0:37:38At the moment, we would look at this in the present market
0:37:38 > 0:37:40to market it at £125,000.
0:37:40 > 0:37:43For a quick sale, we would be looking at £110,000.
0:37:43 > 0:37:47It is good news, as the house could be worth more than they thought.
0:37:47 > 0:37:51But with so much riding on the value, what will the second agent say?
0:37:51 > 0:37:56This is a good property in a good location and is close to local amenities.
0:37:56 > 0:37:58All four bedrooms are a really good size.
0:37:58 > 0:38:02I would put a really good valuation on this property at 105,
0:38:02 > 0:38:04but for a quick sale, £95,000.
0:38:06 > 0:38:08Pleased, impressed, otherwise?
0:38:08 > 0:38:10Yeah, not too bad. Not too bad at all.
0:38:10 > 0:38:17You've got a bit of decorating to do, but I'm impressed - my house looked good!
0:38:17 > 0:38:25The Wilsons are quite pleased with how much their house is worth, but they need to take a closer look
0:38:25 > 0:38:30at their entire finances to see if they can afford life Down Under.
0:38:30 > 0:38:36We've provided the Wilsons with some details of everyday costs of living in Australia.
0:38:36 > 0:38:43So while the boys make the most of the sunny weather, Jon and Tanya face up to some financial facts.
0:38:43 > 0:38:46They even have council tax here, the same as at home.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49- Yeah, it is a bit dearer over here. - Yeah, it looks it.
0:38:49 > 0:38:51The mortgage is dear as well.
0:38:51 > 0:38:56That is depending on what we bring over and how much deposit we put down on the house.
0:38:56 > 0:38:58The gas and electric is cheaper.
0:38:58 > 0:39:03The online, the internet... is a little dearer, but not much.
0:39:03 > 0:39:09The things that are dearer and cheaper, will probably even out.
0:39:09 > 0:39:12Tanya is determined to be positive.
0:39:12 > 0:39:15Let's have a look at the shopping list for food.
0:39:15 > 0:39:20Sausages is cheaper, bread is dearer.
0:39:20 > 0:39:22Just have to cut back on bread!
0:39:22 > 0:39:24Have to make some more at home.
0:39:24 > 0:39:27Fruit is cheaper, that is good.
0:39:27 > 0:39:29Nothing scary there at all.
0:39:29 > 0:39:35So the food is cheaper. The bills that are cheaper counteract the bills that are a bit dearer.
0:39:37 > 0:39:40Overall we are not going to be worse off.
0:39:40 > 0:39:45- I think we should be laughing, laughing all the way to Australia. - Yeah, it will be nice.
0:39:45 > 0:39:47But Jon is not as convinced.
0:39:47 > 0:39:51He is hoping that they would be a lot better off.
0:39:51 > 0:39:55Yeah, I think we can survive. I don't think it will be as easy as we'd thought.
0:39:55 > 0:39:58I thought we'd have more money at the end of the month.
0:39:58 > 0:40:03Although me wages are a bit higher, one thing will outweigh another.
0:40:03 > 0:40:09It will be a bit harder than what I thought, but I think we can cope with that.
0:40:09 > 0:40:13So, after crunching the numbers, how will they vote?
0:40:13 > 0:40:16We've had our reality check,
0:40:16 > 0:40:19between the cost of living in the UK and Australia.
0:40:19 > 0:40:24Our vote is...Australia!
0:40:27 > 0:40:31The Wilsons have a strong network of friends back in Liverpool.
0:40:31 > 0:40:36Not least through their karate, but if you move to the other side
0:40:36 > 0:40:40of the world, you leave all those friends behind.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43So, how easy is it to make new ones in Australia?
0:40:43 > 0:40:48The Wilsons are hoping the passion that they all have for martial arts will be a great way to meet
0:40:48 > 0:40:55like-minded enthusiasts in Perth and get them launched on the social and sporting scene.
0:40:55 > 0:41:01To get them started we have arranged for them to try out a class at a local university sport centre.
0:41:01 > 0:41:06I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to the class or apprehensive.
0:41:06 > 0:41:10The class is run by instructor Sensei Sam Sigers.
0:41:10 > 0:41:13- Hi, guys.- Hi, Sensei. - Nice to meet you guys.
0:41:13 > 0:41:15Do you want to follow me? The class is this way.
0:41:15 > 0:41:17Yeah, that'd be great.
0:41:17 > 0:41:21Wasting no time, Sam introduces the Wilsons to the rest of the team.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24- Hi, guys. How's it going? - Good, Sensei! How are you?
0:41:24 > 0:41:29Good, thank you. This is the Wilson family, they are here from England to train with us tonight.
0:41:29 > 0:41:33So, gather round, come say g'day and introduce yourself.
0:41:33 > 0:41:38The Wilsons are all at different levels in their karate training and Jon's a bit worried.
0:41:38 > 0:41:40- You're all instructors?- Yeah.
0:41:40 > 0:41:44I'm an instructor since last year. It's a bit extra than a normal public class.
0:41:44 > 0:41:47- It's a bit harder than normal, isn't it?- A little bit.
0:41:47 > 0:41:51Tanya is the most advanced of the family, at instructor level.
0:41:51 > 0:41:55- How hard are you going to train us? - How hard do you want to be trained? - Not hard.
0:41:55 > 0:41:57My cheeks can glow a bit, I don't mind that.
0:41:57 > 0:42:01- You will have a few beads of sweat rolling off your face. - I don't do sweat!
0:42:01 > 0:42:06- So, how long have you been training, Owen?- On and off for a couple of years.
0:42:06 > 0:42:09This will be an advanced class for you with black belts and instructors.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12I'm all right, as long as you don't do sparring.
0:42:12 > 0:42:17You'll be fine. We'll do basics, you do that in your other classes, so just have fun with it.
0:42:17 > 0:42:21But before the class begins, Sam's keen for the Wilsons to meet other members.
0:42:21 > 0:42:23How old are you, Calum?
0:42:23 > 0:42:26- 14.- Same age as my son. He does karate as well.
0:42:28 > 0:42:30He graded at brown belt earlier this year.
0:42:30 > 0:42:33The winter sports gets in the way cos he plays rugby and football.
0:42:33 > 0:42:37- Aussie rules.- I've seen it on the telly, I still don't understand!
0:42:37 > 0:42:39There is no rules! Kick the ball, that's it.
0:42:39 > 0:42:41Whereabouts do you guys train in England?
0:42:41 > 0:42:43We train in Liverpool.
0:42:43 > 0:42:46We train twice a week and teach as well.
0:42:46 > 0:42:48So, you have your own dojo?
0:42:48 > 0:42:50- Yes, I have.- How many classes?
0:42:50 > 0:42:53- Two classes on a Friday night. - I have a Friday night class too.
0:42:53 > 0:43:00They all seem very friendly so far, but, as the class starts limbering up, Owen is under no illusions.
0:43:00 > 0:43:02What are you expecting from the class?
0:43:02 > 0:43:05Sweat, blood and guts.
0:43:05 > 0:43:07And Jon is anxious too.
0:43:07 > 0:43:11Too many black belts for me. I might get my head taken off.
0:43:11 > 0:43:13There is no backing out now.
0:43:13 > 0:43:14Everyone up.
0:43:17 > 0:43:19Ichi...ni...
0:43:19 > 0:43:23san...shi...go...
0:43:23 > 0:43:27In...in...!
0:43:27 > 0:43:32Tanya and Calum are really getting into the swing of things
0:43:32 > 0:43:35and Jon and Owen are just enjoying taking part.
0:43:38 > 0:43:43Ichi...ni...
0:43:43 > 0:43:45san...
0:43:45 > 0:43:47shi...
0:43:47 > 0:43:49THEY SHOUT
0:43:49 > 0:43:53Ichi...ni...
0:43:53 > 0:43:57While the boys strut their stuff, Jon takes a breather.
0:43:57 > 0:44:02If we move to Australia, it's going to be a really good way to meet people and make friends because
0:44:02 > 0:44:04with the karate we all have something in common.
0:44:04 > 0:44:08Just to meet a few people here today, I could see us going out having a pint,
0:44:08 > 0:44:11maybe going for a barbie with them. Just a really friendly bunch.
0:44:11 > 0:44:15Tanya is in her element.
0:44:15 > 0:44:19When I was getting ready to come to karate, I was a little bit anxious, training with different people,
0:44:19 > 0:44:24different senseis, they all have a different technique to do something.
0:44:24 > 0:44:27But it has taken me to a new high.
0:44:27 > 0:44:28It was very good.
0:44:28 > 0:44:31But she can't help thinking about the bigger picture.
0:44:31 > 0:44:38If we were to come to Australia, it's going to be a whole new house, job and life. Everything all at once.
0:44:38 > 0:44:41Obviously with it being our family, then we would have each other,
0:44:41 > 0:44:45and the karate would ease things in a little more.
0:44:45 > 0:44:51But...I'd be a liar if I said I wouldn't worry about it.
0:44:51 > 0:44:53The boys are feeling positive.
0:44:53 > 0:44:56Enjoyed it, really good. I loved that class.
0:44:56 > 0:44:58- CALUM:- It has put my mind to rest.
0:44:58 > 0:45:00You can make new friends.
0:45:00 > 0:45:02Have a good laugh, like we can do in England.
0:45:02 > 0:45:04Sam wants to know how they got on.
0:45:05 > 0:45:07Did you enjoy it?
0:45:07 > 0:45:11- Yeah, it was good.- You were right, you did make me sweat.
0:45:11 > 0:45:15- Good, I'm glad. - Darling, it's "perspire"!
0:45:15 > 0:45:21There is a couple of rules in karate - listen, look and sweat!
0:45:21 > 0:45:26The friends the Wilsons have made through karate in the UK are a big part of their lives back home.
0:45:26 > 0:45:28So will Australia match up?
0:45:28 > 0:45:30Time to vote.
0:45:31 > 0:45:33We've just done our karate class.
0:45:33 > 0:45:35Had a really good training session.
0:45:35 > 0:45:37Great sensei. Lovely people.
0:45:37 > 0:45:39Heard a few stories, a few jokes.
0:45:39 > 0:45:42The vote is for...
0:45:42 > 0:45:44Australia!
0:45:49 > 0:45:54Back in the UK, the Wilsons have a strong family network.
0:45:54 > 0:45:59Tanya is very close to her younger sister, Amy, having looked after her as a child.
0:45:59 > 0:46:01A move to Australia would be heart-wrenching.
0:46:01 > 0:46:08Jon's parents are a big part of the Wilsons' life, as they live around the corner.
0:46:08 > 0:46:13As they're both in their 70s, leaving them would be a huge worry for Jon.
0:46:13 > 0:46:17With his father having recently been admitted to hospital following a fall,
0:46:17 > 0:46:20the decision to move would be even more difficult.
0:46:24 > 0:46:26To help them consider the huge emotional decision
0:46:26 > 0:46:30that moving to the other side of the world would mean,
0:46:30 > 0:46:35we've recorded a series of messages from their loved ones back home.
0:46:42 > 0:46:45'Hi, Jon! Hi, Jon, Tan and the boys.'
0:46:45 > 0:46:47Hope everything is OK.
0:46:47 > 0:46:51'Hi, Tannie, Jon, boys, hope you are all having a good time.'
0:46:51 > 0:46:53'Jon, as a son, he's great.'
0:46:53 > 0:46:55He is there if you want him.
0:46:55 > 0:46:58He's not in your face all the while, don't get me wrong,
0:46:58 > 0:47:01'but I only have to phone up and he says, "What?"'
0:47:01 > 0:47:03He's hard-working.
0:47:03 > 0:47:05He's a real family man.
0:47:05 > 0:47:07Everything he does is for his wife and his boys.
0:47:07 > 0:47:10'Tanya is everything to me.
0:47:10 > 0:47:12'She's like a second mum
0:47:12 > 0:47:13'and a best friend.'
0:47:13 > 0:47:16Obviously, she is my sister, so also like a sister to me.
0:47:16 > 0:47:19But she's the type of person who'd do anything for anybody.
0:47:19 > 0:47:23'She is loving, caring, reliable, she is always there.'
0:47:24 > 0:47:30We'll miss him but it's better opportunities for him.
0:47:30 > 0:47:34'I will miss them, but I don't want them to stay for us.'
0:47:34 > 0:47:38We're not going to last forever and then they'd be sorry they never went.
0:47:38 > 0:47:43We'll go over there to see them, if it takes every penny we've got.
0:47:43 > 0:47:46Tanya is good with Alicia, that is one of the things I will miss most.
0:47:46 > 0:47:50I always thought she'd be around to see my children grow up.
0:47:50 > 0:47:55It is not as if she'll be able to come down and take her to the city centre or on the swings,
0:47:55 > 0:48:00just some of the things I thought she possibly would do with me.
0:48:00 > 0:48:04Once they have gone, it is then you start missing them.
0:48:04 > 0:48:07'Then starts sinking home, then.
0:48:07 > 0:48:09'I'll miss everything about them.'
0:48:09 > 0:48:13Jon's main concern, of course, and like, I'm sure, lots of people
0:48:13 > 0:48:15in that situation, they are thinking of their parents.
0:48:15 > 0:48:20That was a big thing for Jon and his wife.
0:48:20 > 0:48:23They know I wouldn't get in touch with them unless it was...
0:48:23 > 0:48:28I'd tell Tanya we're going for a check-up, but if it was anything more serious,
0:48:28 > 0:48:31I would be honest with them and tell them.
0:48:31 > 0:48:36It's the first time in a very long time that she has probably put herself first.
0:48:36 > 0:48:41'So we all need to stop being so selfish and let her enjoy what she wants to do.'
0:48:41 > 0:48:43I will not go to the airport.
0:48:43 > 0:48:50I will do me crying here when they have gone, I just hope I can keep it in.
0:48:51 > 0:48:55I'll miss... just the way she is with me,
0:48:55 > 0:48:58the way she makes me feel when she comes over to stay.
0:49:00 > 0:49:07I always thought if she ever moved it would be closer, but if she does move to Australia,

0:50:47 > 0:50:50It's torn everything in two, now.
0:50:50 > 0:50:57I didn't realise how hard that would be, but the one that really got me was me mum.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14I really don't know what way I'm going to go.

0:52:48 > 0:52:49All right?
0:52:58 > 0:53:02It was really mind-changing. I've changed my thoughts,

0:53:06 > 0:53:10I'm a bit lost in thoughts at the moment.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30It's a big decision, isn't it?
0:53:32 > 0:53:38Have the Wilsons all underestimated their ties to the UK?

0:54:01 > 0:54:06And Jon loved his experience at work, where he discovered he could work less and earn more.
0:54:06 > 0:54:11What we are really after is good bakers, so if you love what you do,
0:54:11 > 0:54:16if you are a passionate baker, you would have no trouble getting a job in Australia.
0:54:16 > 0:54:17That's really good to hear.
0:54:17 > 0:54:21The valuation on their house was a pleasant surprise and they were
0:54:21 > 0:54:25all impressed by their taste of life Down Under.
0:54:25 > 0:54:29But it was always going to be difficult for Tanya to contemplate leaving Amy.
