0:00:02 > 0:00:06Could you take your teenage children to the other side of the world,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08away from their friends and family,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11even though you knew they didn't want to go?

0:00:11 > 0:00:14I don't want to move to Australia.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16But what if you've found YOUR dream?

0:00:16 > 0:00:20I could live here. There's enough to do to keep me occupied.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22There's a challenge here.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26And what would you do if the pull of home was too much to bear?

0:00:26 > 0:00:28You're confused, aren't you?

0:00:28 > 0:00:31If you and your family were being pulled apart,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33and having to make a life-changing decision,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36would you go where you were wanted down under?

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Australia is one of the top destinations in the world

0:01:03 > 0:01:06for emigrating Brits looking for a better way of life.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10With a land mass over 30 times larger than the UK,

0:01:10 > 0:01:14and one third of the population, there's plenty of space for everyone.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17But its pristine beaches and relaxed way of life

0:01:17 > 0:01:21don't always provide everything that new arrivals expect.

0:01:25 > 0:01:30Simon and Heather Little moved to the idyllic setting of Devon from Manchester 11 years ago,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34with their sons Kai, aged 13, and ten-year-old Tyler.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37But they're now hankering for a change.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41The decision to come to Australia was probably about 15 years ago,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45not long after we'd got married. I said, "Why don't we move there?"

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Simon said, "Oh, yeah, we could," in a jokey manner,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51but I think I've been the one that's held that dream

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and really tried to make this happen.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57The Littles are an active family, and although they moved to Devon

0:01:57 > 0:02:00for the outdoor life, the sun doesn't always shine.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02A lot of our activities are restricted

0:02:02 > 0:02:04by the weather we have in this country,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07and I'm hoping Australia would make it more accessible

0:02:07 > 0:02:08with the better weather.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Simon has two very good reasons to make this move work.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16My driving force behind this

0:02:16 > 0:02:21is improving the prospects and life for Kai and Tyler.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23But has he asked them what they really want?

0:02:23 > 0:02:27At first I didn't want to move,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30but I've changed my mind and I think I want to now.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32I don't really want to move yet,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35because I've got a lot of friends here,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38so I'm not sure about having to start all over again.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Kai's adamant that there's no way he's going.

0:02:41 > 0:02:46He's at that teenage age where relationships are quite important,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50and he's just starting to realise who he is. He's turning into a man,

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and it's a very difficult time.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56The whole family are active members of their local rugby club,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59and they rely on it for their social life.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02We've built up quite a network of friends,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04and that would be something I really would miss.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07'We'll have to start again. It won't be easy.'

0:03:07 > 0:03:11And, with the boys entering a critical stage in their education,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13time is of the essence.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15We have to do it quickly, or not at all.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18THEY CHATTER AND LAUGH

0:03:20 > 0:03:24This family is torn about what to do.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Kai and Tyler are the reason that they want to go to Australia,

0:03:27 > 0:03:32but they could also be the ones who put an end to the dream.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38Simon's skills as an industrial engineer are highly sought after,

0:03:38 > 0:03:42but their new life could be very different, depending on where they settle.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Australia has a lot to offer families like the Littles.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49But where would give them the balance of outdoors life,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51job prospects and affordability?

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Melbourne is the buzzing capital of Victoria,

0:03:55 > 0:03:57and is fiercely competitive with Sydney

0:03:57 > 0:04:00for being the unofficial "first city" of Australia.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05A population of four million people and a relatively buoyant economy

0:04:05 > 0:04:08mean Simon's job prospects are good.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Perth is the capital of Western Australia,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14with a population of 1.5 million people.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18It's a quiet alternative to the larger cities on the eastern coast.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21It's not a huge industrial metropolis,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24but the mining boom means good work opportunities,

0:04:24 > 0:04:27and the boys would enjoy the pristine surfing beaches.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32Byron Bay is a small town located between Sydney and Brisbane

0:04:32 > 0:04:34on the east coast of Australia.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37The surrounding countryside offers beautiful landscapes,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40and, with plenty of picturesque beaches,

0:04:40 > 0:04:43it's considered to be many people's idea of the Australian idyll.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47But jobs for Simon could be hard to come by,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49and the family could feel a little isolated,

0:04:49 > 0:04:51away from a large city.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00So three very strong possibilities there. Where shall we send them?

0:05:00 > 0:05:04We decided that the Littles should try out life in Melbourne

0:05:04 > 0:05:06for their week down under.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Simon would have plenty of opportunities to find work,

0:05:09 > 0:05:13and Kai and Tyler would never get bored of the bustling social scene.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15And Heather could find a teaching job,

0:05:15 > 0:05:19which would help fund her dream. Over the course of a week,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22the Littles will sample all aspects of Aussie life,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25and finally they'll have to decide whether to stay in the UK

0:05:25 > 0:05:28or move to Australia.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31The Littles will be seeing what kind of home they could afford.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Very dark. Needs a complete revamp,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37if not flattening and starting again.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Simon will be put to work in an Aussie factory.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Doesn't seem to want to come off as easy as the last one.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Mum and Dad will do all they can to convince the boys

0:05:46 > 0:05:49that they can make a new life in Australia.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Here's a jersey. Hopefully they're not going to be too nasty on you.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56But it's going to take a lot more than a game of rugby.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01The Littles' journey from Exeter to Melbourne takes 32 hours,

0:06:01 > 0:06:04and covers over 10,000 miles.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09It's the first time the boys have ever flown,

0:06:09 > 0:06:11so how did they get on?

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Boring. It was really boring. Really, really, really boring.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18My ears are hurting because of the noise of landing.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22- They still haven't popped. - I'm a bit brain-numb at the moment.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It's a long journey. Only when you do it yourself

0:06:26 > 0:06:30do you realise just how far from family and friends it really is,

0:06:30 > 0:06:33and questions start to arise.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Will we make a go of it here? Is this the right place?

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Is it what all four of us want and need at this stage in life?

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Can we persuade Kai?

0:06:42 > 0:06:46But Kai is adamant. He's not even seen anything of Australia yet,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48and his mind is already made up.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51I don't want to move to Australia.

0:06:51 > 0:06:56Unless something stands out here, I probably won't change my mind.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00If they can't persuade him, their lifelong dream

0:07:00 > 0:07:02will be in tatters.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Perhaps the warm climate will help change his mind.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07When the Littles left Exeter,

0:07:07 > 0:07:11temperatures were a record minus-18 degrees!

0:07:11 > 0:07:15They have arrived in Melbourne in the middle of a record heat wave,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18with temperatures of 45 degrees.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21For their week down under, they'll stay in a rented house

0:07:21 > 0:07:23not far from the centre of town.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26But will their first impressions of Australian property

0:07:26 > 0:07:29live up to their expectations?

0:07:32 > 0:07:35They may have hoped for something a little more stylish,

0:07:35 > 0:07:39but affordable high-class accommodation in Melbourne

0:07:39 > 0:07:42is hard to come by in the peak of the Australian summer.

0:07:43 > 0:07:48Unfortunately for Kai, this house has only two bedrooms.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- Oh, trouble.- Trouble there!

0:07:50 > 0:07:53And Heather isn't impressed with the decor.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56It needs a bit of life putting into it.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59It's larger than I thought it would be, but we need three bedrooms

0:07:59 > 0:08:03because these guys won't sleep together. They need their own space.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Not the best of starts, but it'll give them a place to get some rest

0:08:07 > 0:08:11before exploring the area. But sleep might be easier said than done.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13It's approaching midnight,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16and the temperature is still over 35 degrees.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19I'm struggling with the heat. I'm melting.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Temperature... There you go.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26As Simon gets to grips with the air conditioning,

0:08:26 > 0:08:29the boys try to settle in. Let's hope some of the other properties

0:08:29 > 0:08:31are a little more inspiring.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36If not, Kai's idea of staying in the UK could become a reality.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45Back in the UK, the Littles live in a modest three-bedroom terrace

0:08:45 > 0:08:48on the outskirts of Exeter.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52It has a small back garden, and although the rural surroundings

0:08:52 > 0:08:56suit their outdoor lifestyle, they have always wanted something bigger.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00They expect to get £175,000 for their house in the UK

0:09:00 > 0:09:03in the current climate, which will give them a total budget

0:09:03 > 0:09:07of £250,000 in Australia.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10So, for that money, what's on Heather's wish list?

0:09:11 > 0:09:14Somewhere they can play the drums, cos at the moment

0:09:14 > 0:09:18they're cramped into their bedrooms. The drum kit does take up space.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I'd love a swimming pool in the garden,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24a nice large garden for the dog to run around in.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Maybe even a basketball court, if possible.

0:09:26 > 0:09:31And, you know, a short drive or even a walk to the beach.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- A double garage for me. - Oh, yeah. Sorry!

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Not too much to ask for, then! But we'll see what we can do.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42It's going to be tough getting a property they all like

0:09:42 > 0:09:46on their budget, but finding the right home is essential

0:09:46 > 0:09:49if Australia is going to offer them a lifestyle

0:09:49 > 0:09:52worth uprooting the whole family for.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55House prices in Melbourne's inner-city suburbs

0:09:55 > 0:09:57have soared in recent years,

0:09:57 > 0:10:02thanks to their close proximity to classy eateries, shops and bars.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05And there's no sign of a let-up.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08This two-bedroom house in the inner suburb of Collingwood

0:10:08 > 0:10:10is well presented and close to the action,

0:10:10 > 0:10:15but is small, and over budget at £370,000.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Although work options would be plentiful for Simon,

0:10:18 > 0:10:22the spacious home they dream of could be just out of reach.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27There are many more affordable suburbs just 30 minutes' drive

0:10:27 > 0:10:30from the city centre. Dandenong isn't a posh area,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33but the transport links to the city are good,

0:10:33 > 0:10:36and the houses, although older, are more affordable.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40This four-bedroom, two-bathroom house is just over budget

0:10:40 > 0:10:44at £320,000, although you could buy your own plot of land

0:10:44 > 0:10:48and build one just like it for around 250,000.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52There are a few firms out here that cater to Simon's work needs,

0:10:52 > 0:10:56and the attractive beaches of Port Phillip Bay

0:10:56 > 0:10:58are just a 30-minute drive south.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Options near the beach are split between the surf coast

0:11:02 > 0:11:06over an hour's drive south of Melbourne, or the quieter beaches

0:11:06 > 0:11:09of Port Phillip Bay, which stretch southeast out of the city centre.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13But, as always, the nearer the sea, the higher the price.

0:11:13 > 0:11:19This four-bedroom home in Mordialloc is on the market for £320,000,

0:11:19 > 0:11:21and is still fairly compact.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Move down the coast, and things get cheaper.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Frankston is at the end of the train line

0:11:26 > 0:11:31and an hour from the city, which could make Simon's commute difficult,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35but you could buy this four-bedroom new build for £250,000.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42We chose to find three properties in the country

0:11:42 > 0:11:45for our family to look at. The suburb of Dandenong

0:11:45 > 0:11:47has many affordable properties,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49and, if Simon couldn't get work nearby,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52it's only half an hour's commute into the city.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Property one has three bedrooms and a reasonably sized garden.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00The kitchen is small, and it doesn't have the double garage

0:12:00 > 0:12:04on Simon's wish list. However, it is within their budget

0:12:04 > 0:12:07at 440,000 Australian dollars.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09That's about £250,000.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12So, what will they make of it?

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Shiny floor!

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Great for dogs and dirty children.

0:12:21 > 0:12:26First impressions seem OK, and Heather is already thinking practically.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29So what will they make of the rest of the house?

0:12:29 > 0:12:31- Big enough. - Yeah, it's nice, isn't it?

0:12:31 > 0:12:33There's lots of natural light.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36The bright living area seems to tick a few boxes,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39but how will they like the kitchen?

0:12:39 > 0:12:43We'd have to change cupboards eventually. It feels a bit shut off.

0:12:43 > 0:12:47On to the sleeping arrangements, and bedroom one with its en suite.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51- Ooh, look. En suite. - It's not the biggest in the world.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54- No, but as we haven't got one at all...- It's a step up.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56So Mum and Dad are sorted.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59But what about the bedrooms for Kai and Tyler?

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Once you've got your bed in here... This is a double. Yours is single.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07Heather's practical thinking isn't getting through to the boys.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- I don't want this room. Tylie can have it.- OK.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Perhaps his mind will be changed by bedroom number three.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- So, Kai...- I think this room's smaller than the other.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- So I might take the other one. - SIMON LAUGHS

0:13:19 > 0:13:23Maybe this property just isn't big enough for them.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Will the garden give them the outdoor space they want?

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- It's very nice, isn't it? - Nice covered area.- It's lovely.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33They all seem to like this large outdoor area,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35- but Simon has spotted a problem. - No garage.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- But...- Oh. Carport,

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- as opposed to a garage. - Carport and two lockups.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44And Heather's not been bowled over.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49The property hasn't given me the "wow" factor,

0:13:49 > 0:13:50but I can see huge potential.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Kai and Tyler aren't convinced, either.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It's quite a nice house, but I need a bigger bedroom than that, really.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01The garden's nice, but then the bedrooms look quite small.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03I think we need bigger ones.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07So, both boys think it's too small and want bigger bedrooms,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10which won't help persuade Kai to make the move.

0:14:10 > 0:14:15Simon, though, is undeterred, and determined to make their new life a reality.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17I could see us being happy in this property.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20So, not a bad start.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22On to property number two.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27Let's hope there's something there to help persuade Kai about a move to Australia.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31This house is also in the Dandenong area.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34It offers four bedrooms, a good size garden

0:14:34 > 0:14:39and that all-important double garage that's top of Simon's wish list.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43It's over budget at 500,000 Australian dollars,

0:14:43 > 0:14:46which is around £300,000,

0:14:46 > 0:14:50but a favourable exchange rate could make this a viable option for them.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56- This is very nice. I like this. - It's not what I expected.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58No, it isn't what I expected.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01This property and its modern decor seems to be working for them.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05But what's in store as they head into the kitchen?

0:15:05 > 0:15:09- Oh, that's much better. - Wow, that's big!- I like the kitchen.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Mum, Dad and Tyler like it, but Kai seems uninterested.

0:15:13 > 0:15:18It's just such a, like, open, family entertainment room, isn't it?

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Heather is impressed,

0:15:21 > 0:15:25but she might have forgotten that this house is over budget.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Oh, Simon! Walk-in wardrobe! Massive!

0:15:28 > 0:15:31It's a bigger en suite than the other house. It's nice.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33This is a lovely size room.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37They loved the outdoor space in the last property,

0:15:37 > 0:15:39so will this garden offer anything better?

0:15:39 > 0:15:41There. You can grow your vegetables.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Simon immediately spots an extra he didn't expect.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48Double garage from the front, single from the rear. That's me happy!

0:15:48 > 0:15:52But is it really worth moving 10,000 miles for?

0:15:52 > 0:15:54I prefer the outside area in the other house.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56It's a nice big back garden, though.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59So, what do they think of property number two?

0:15:59 > 0:16:03This has got a bit more of the "wow" factor than the other house.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07As soon as you walk in, you get the feeling of openness and space.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09It is above our budget at the moment.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13We would have to rely on me securing a well paid job over here.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16So, fingers crossed.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20They all like property number two, but realise that it's over budget,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23so it's on to property number three.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27Perhaps a different approach will help them make a unanimous decision.

0:16:31 > 0:16:35The further from the city they go, the more space they'll have.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38But will it be too remote for the boys?

0:16:38 > 0:16:41This property is deep in the heart of the countryside,

0:16:41 > 0:16:45beyond Dandenong, and it's an hour's drive from the city.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48It has three bedrooms, an open-plan living area,

0:16:48 > 0:16:52and, to top it all off, comes with ten acres of woodland.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56It's ideal for the outside lifestyle that the Littles are looking for,

0:16:56 > 0:17:01and it comes in under budget at 390,000 Australian dollars -

0:17:01 > 0:17:03that's about £225,000.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07It's quite different to the other two properties,

0:17:07 > 0:17:10so how will they react to this rural hideaway?

0:17:11 > 0:17:14First off, the open-plan living area.

0:17:15 > 0:17:16Uh-huh.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18OK.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Oh, dear. They've gone a bit quiet.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Perhaps the kitchen will give them something to talk about.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28- It's not quite my dream kitchen.- No.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33- We've now gone one step forward and two back.- Yeah.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35It's not looking good so far.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39With work, it could be nice, but it just feels so dark and depressing.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43This house clearly hasn't made much of an impression,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45but this property is all about the land.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Maybe it will help change their minds.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50It's a massive space, though, isn't it?

0:17:50 > 0:17:52- Come on!- There's a woodshed.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57It could be a good garage space, workspace.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00I could... I could live here.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04There's enough to do to keep me occupied. There's a challenge here.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08Ten acres is the equivalent of five football pitches.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11It's a good walk to even find the boundary fence.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13See you in a bit!

0:18:13 > 0:18:17The last thing Kai expected was to have an adventure

0:18:17 > 0:18:19in what could be his own back garden.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Maybe he will be tempted to try life out here after all!

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Found the edge!

0:18:24 > 0:18:28This would certainly give them the outdoor life like nothing else.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32So, do the Littles think this rural hideaway could give them

0:18:32 > 0:18:34the dream they want?

0:18:34 > 0:18:36It's very dark. It needs a complete revamp,

0:18:36 > 0:18:43if not flattening and starting again. But the land outside is amazing.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46It's a long way from anywhere, and this property's isolation

0:18:46 > 0:18:50is making Kai feel even further away from home.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52I have a lot to lose if I move.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56At the moment, my heart's telling me to stay in England.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59For Heather, it's about a house which would suit them all,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02and this might just be too isolated.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05I'm not sure about this area, really,

0:19:05 > 0:19:07whether we're just too far away.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11And there's one small disadvantage to living in the wilderness -

0:19:11 > 0:19:12the bugs live there, too.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15The insects are scary!

0:19:15 > 0:19:17That's huge!

0:19:17 > 0:19:21The Littles have seen three very different properties.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Property one was cramped, but offered three bedrooms

0:19:25 > 0:19:28and a good sized garden at a reasonable price.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32Property two was over budget, but offered more of the "wow" factor.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Property three was disappointing inside,

0:19:35 > 0:19:38but outdoors sparked all their imaginations.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42It's time to make a decision. Will the Littles go for properties

0:19:42 > 0:19:44in the UK or in Australia?

0:19:46 > 0:19:49Well, we've seen three properties today in Australia,

0:19:49 > 0:19:53and now we're going to vote.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Australia!

0:20:01 > 0:20:05- You said Australia! - Yeah, just based on the houses.

0:20:05 > 0:20:10- OK.- That's what we're doing. - That's why I chose Australia.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Against all the odds, Kai has voted for Australia.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16Maybe he's changing his mind about the move,

0:20:16 > 0:20:18and things are going to be OK.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26This trial week in Australia is crucial to the Little family.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Mum and Dad want to make the move,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32but they have to convince eldest son Kai it's right for him, too.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36At the moment my heart's telling me to stay in England.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Later we'll see if a rugby training session down under

0:20:40 > 0:20:43could change his mind about staying in the UK.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46Kai says he's enjoying himself and he likes it here,

0:20:46 > 0:20:50but I've not heard him yet say, "I want to move here."

0:20:50 > 0:20:52"I want to live here."

0:20:52 > 0:20:56And we'll find out how the financial situation affects the Littles

0:20:56 > 0:20:59when they discover what their UK property is worth,

0:20:59 > 0:21:03- and if they will be better off in Oz.- It's dearer.- But how much?

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Simon is the main visa applicant,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12and the whole move depends on whether or not

0:21:12 > 0:21:16he can find a good job with a decent salary.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19If he can't, none of the family are going anywhere,

0:21:19 > 0:21:22regardless of Kai's intentions.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27Back in the UK, Simon works at an engineering firm in Exeter,

0:21:27 > 0:21:29who make the internal fins for jet engines.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33His mechanical knowledge and skills are very transferable,

0:21:33 > 0:21:39so he hopes to earn a salary equivalent to the £31,000 he gets in the UK.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Simon is on his way to a firm in Dandenong

0:21:41 > 0:21:43who supply and maintain factory machinery.

0:21:43 > 0:21:48The only concerns I have would be...

0:21:48 > 0:21:51finding out the salaries for qualified engineers

0:21:51 > 0:21:54aren't as high as I'm hoping for.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58That might end up meaning a complete rethink

0:21:58 > 0:22:01on what we do and where we go.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Morning!

0:22:03 > 0:22:06Mark Jones is the boss at a successful engineering company

0:22:06 > 0:22:09started by his father. He wastes no time

0:22:09 > 0:22:12checking out Simon's credentials.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14So, what's your main experiences in?

0:22:14 > 0:22:18Mechanical, electrical, welding.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- Yes?- Varied.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24So, will Simon be up to the Aussie engineering standards?

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Foreman Ken has a little job for him.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30- Going to replace the brake units... - Uh-huh?- ..on this machine here.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33I'll leave you with it and come back and see you later on.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36- Fine. No problem.- Thank you.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Simon is keen to impress,

0:22:38 > 0:22:41and jumps to it. But would this type of work pay well enough

0:22:41 > 0:22:45to ensure that Simon can fulfil his dream of moving down under?

0:22:47 > 0:22:51As Simon's in the thick of it, trying to impress his new boss,

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Heather and the boys head for the beach.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Heather is meeting with local headmistress Carey Graham

0:22:59 > 0:23:02to find out about job opportunities in the area.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06Back home, Heather hasn't found it easy to find a permanent job

0:23:06 > 0:23:10as a primary-school teacher. She wants to know how to go about finding work in Australia.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13What you need to do first of all is apply

0:23:13 > 0:23:16to the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Once you've got your registration for teaching,

0:23:19 > 0:23:23you can contact schools and say, "Here I am. I'm available for work."

0:23:23 > 0:23:26New teachers often look for supply work to begin with,

0:23:26 > 0:23:28and that can pay well.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32Our supply teachers now earn 260 a day, Australian,

0:23:32 > 0:23:33so it's really good pay.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36That's around £150 a day,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40but Heather would ultimately be looking for a permanent position.

0:23:40 > 0:23:45So, what sort of salary would a full-time teacher be on in Victoria?

0:23:45 > 0:23:49Our first-year teachers earn about 58,000 Australian,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52and it goes through to nearly 80,000

0:23:52 > 0:23:55- for teachers who have been teaching 12 years.- Right.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59That's a starting salary of over £30,000.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02Heather could have made a good contact here.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04So, what does she think of the work opportunities?

0:24:04 > 0:24:09Interesting to find that, by just finding supply work in the schools,

0:24:09 > 0:24:12that I would secure full-time work.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15In the UK, particularly in Devon,

0:24:15 > 0:24:18that wouldn't happen.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23As the boys enjoy the cool blue waters of the bay,

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Simon is deep in concentration at work.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29And he's come across a problem.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Doesn't seem to want to come off as easy as the last one.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37With a bit of engineering know-how and a helping hand from Ken,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Simon manages to pull it off.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42- Right.- That's the one.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45- OK?- Well, we're off now.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49- How have you got on? - No problems there.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53- Everything seems to have gone back like it should.- Looks good. You know what you're doing.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56He seems to have done just fine,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59but needs to find out if he can earn enough to support the family.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02What is the average salary that I could earn here?

0:25:02 > 0:25:06You're looking at around about 60,000 Australian a year

0:25:06 > 0:25:11as a base, and what governs it is how much you want to put in

0:25:11 > 0:25:15and get out of it. If you want to earn it, want to work the hours, they are there to be worked.

0:25:15 > 0:25:20He could earn anything from 35,000 to 55,000 including overtime,

0:25:20 > 0:25:24so more than he's on in the UK. Boss Mark moved out himself

0:25:24 > 0:25:28as a child, and has only good things to say about emigrating.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31I think, honestly, you can't go wrong.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35If family permits, move over here.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37There is so much opportunity over here.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40You won't look back.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43So would Simon prefer to work in the UK or Australia?

0:25:43 > 0:25:48Based on my experiences today, working with Mark and his company,

0:25:48 > 0:25:51and the questions he was able to answer in a positive manner,

0:25:51 > 0:25:53I am going to vote...

0:25:59 > 0:26:02..Australia.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08Work prospects for the Littles have lived up to their expectations,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11but Kai still hasn't seen anything to change his mind,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14and could throw a spanner into the works.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25The Littles' job prospects are looking positive.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29But, if they're going to be able to afford their dream property,

0:26:29 > 0:26:33they have to get a good price for their UK home.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36They think their three-bedroom end-of-terrace house

0:26:36 > 0:26:39is worth around £175,000.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41But will the experts agree?

0:26:41 > 0:26:45We sent two estate agents in to give a current valuation.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54OK! Well, it's a nice open-plan lounge-diner.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Nice modern colour schemes. Nice modern fireplace.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00- HER HEELS CLICK ON FLOOR - She's got her heels on.

0:27:00 > 0:27:05Lovely garden. Not overlooked at all, nice mature trees at the back.

0:27:06 > 0:27:10Nice kitchen. The units are a little bit dated,

0:27:10 > 0:27:13but they've tried to modernise with funky wallpaper, which looks good.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16- She's going upstairs. - THEY LAUGH

0:27:18 > 0:27:22This bedroom's been decorated recently. Nice modern colour scheme,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25- and nice outlook. - Hey, there's my trophies.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29- Oh, what a cute cat! - THEY LAUGH

0:27:29 > 0:27:34This bedroom's a little more dated than the others, but still a good size and nice outlook.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36- Oh!- Oh, no!

0:27:37 > 0:27:41Well, she seemed to like it, but what about the second opinion?

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Nice bright modern feel.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48Good outlook to the woods.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- Didn't like it.- I don't like him.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Hmm... It's a rat!

0:27:58 > 0:28:00Hmm!

0:28:00 > 0:28:03He said my guinea pig was a rat!

0:28:05 > 0:28:09So will their house achieve a good price in the current climate?

0:28:09 > 0:28:16OK. Perhaps, two years ago, this house would have been £210,000...

0:28:16 > 0:28:17- Really? - ..something like that.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Today I think it's £195,000.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23- Ooh!- I think, for a quick sale,

0:28:23 > 0:28:29we'd probably have to ask for offers in the region of £185,000.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32As a well presented three-bedroom end-terrace house

0:28:32 > 0:28:36in a cul-de-sac in a family-friendly, popular area,

0:28:36 > 0:28:40valuation-wise, I would expect it to sell for about 190,000.

0:28:40 > 0:28:44If they wanted a very quick sale, I'd probably price it at 175,

0:28:44 > 0:28:46or maybe 179,950.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48Not a bad price after all!

0:28:48 > 0:28:53The prices are... They're what we were hoping for.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56Any less than that, we would've been disappointed.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59It's reassuring to know we're not going to lose on the house.

0:28:59 > 0:29:03Getting a good price for their UK home is a start.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06But, after the cost of moving,

0:29:06 > 0:29:09can they afford the life they want in Australia?

0:29:09 > 0:29:12If they're not going to be better off,

0:29:12 > 0:29:15is there any point in making the move?

0:29:16 > 0:29:19We prepared a comparison of their UK expenses

0:29:19 > 0:29:21with potential Australian costs,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24to find out if they'd be better or worse off.

0:29:24 > 0:29:29So your UK salary would be 31,000, as opposed to a salary in Australia

0:29:29 > 0:29:31of 43,000.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Mine would be a vast increase anyway,

0:29:33 > 0:29:37because I would be going full time and can get full time,

0:29:37 > 0:29:39so that's from 6,500 to 34,000.

0:29:41 > 0:29:436,416.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46More than double.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50- OK!- All right.- So, expenses, then.

0:29:50 > 0:29:54Mortgage repayment for the UK property is...

0:29:54 > 0:29:56475.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59- Let's use the house we really would like...- Let's go mid.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02- Let's go mid.- OK.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05- Which was 620.- 620.

0:30:05 > 0:30:06OK.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09- Transport costs, fuel costs...- Fuel.

0:30:09 > 0:30:14- So it was 285... - 285 we're spending over at home.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17Over here, call it 200.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20Your food is a lot more expensive here.

0:30:20 > 0:30:24I happened to spot in there, bananas are twice the price they are in England.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27- Carrots are nearly twice the price. - Milk...

0:30:27 > 0:30:31- was a little bit more expensive. - Australia is dearer.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34Which we expected, but how much dearer?

0:30:34 > 0:30:36£156 a month.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39So, £156 dearer.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42I mean, your salary alone

0:30:42 > 0:30:45would be enough... that I wouldn't have to work!

0:30:45 > 0:30:47THEY LAUGH

0:30:47 > 0:30:50Unless we wanted a bigger property.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52The big surprise is the expensive groceries,

0:30:52 > 0:30:56but they could both potentially earn more in Australia.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59We would have, um, a better lifestyle.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03We would be financially... better off.

0:31:03 > 0:31:08If they've got their maths right, the Littles could afford a decent lifestyle in Australia.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12But Simon still has concern about Kai's feelings towards the move.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16Kai says he's enjoying himself and he likes it here,

0:31:16 > 0:31:20but I've not heard him yet say, "I want to move here."

0:31:20 > 0:31:22"I want to live here."

0:31:22 > 0:31:25So, on the cost of living, how will they vote?

0:31:25 > 0:31:27Taking all things into consideration,

0:31:27 > 0:31:30we're going to vote...

0:31:33 > 0:31:36Australia!

0:31:36 > 0:31:39Heather and Simon are convinced the move is right for them.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43Now all they have to do is make sure Kai feels the same way.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50Well, things are looking up on the financial front.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54But the Littles' main reason for wanting to move down under

0:31:54 > 0:31:56is the outdoor lifestyle.

0:31:56 > 0:31:59So they've come into Melbourne city centre

0:31:59 > 0:32:01to hire some bikes for the afternoon.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09If anything's going to persuade Kai and Tyler

0:32:09 > 0:32:13that Aussie life is for them, it's going to be the outdoor activities

0:32:13 > 0:32:15they can do.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20There are some rules to cycling down under.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24It's compulsory to wear cycle helmets in Australia,

0:32:24 > 0:32:27and usually you're not allowed to ride in parks.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30But, if you have children under the age of 11,

0:32:30 > 0:32:33you can make use of footpaths through public places.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38After some strenuous cycling around Melbourne,

0:32:38 > 0:32:41the Littles stop at the city's landmark Federation Square

0:32:41 > 0:32:44for some well earned refreshment.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47Built in 2002, it's a great outdoor space

0:32:47 > 0:32:50to meet people, have a drink, or just catch a few rays.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55So, how are the family feeling after today's activities?

0:32:55 > 0:32:59Between UK and Australian lifestyle, we're going to vote...

0:33:02 > 0:33:04- Australia!- England!

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Australia!

0:33:07 > 0:33:10When we do get the hot days in England, it's quite a lot like this,

0:33:10 > 0:33:13and I just couldn't decide which one to go with.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17I understand why they've voted the ways that they have.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20Um, I think what he has missed, though,

0:33:20 > 0:33:23is that there doesn't seem to be any tension around here,

0:33:23 > 0:33:26which, I think, has gone above his head.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28But Mum thinks it's a positive outcome.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I thought Kai would've gone straight for the UK,

0:33:31 > 0:33:34so it's interesting to see that he was in the middle a little bit.

0:33:34 > 0:33:38With an undecided vote from Kai and a UK vote from Tyler,

0:33:38 > 0:33:43it doesn't look as though either of the boys even want to entertain the move to Australia.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46Heather and Simon's dream appears to be slipping away.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Kai is still not convinced.

0:33:53 > 0:33:56And if any of them are going to settle happily,

0:33:56 > 0:33:59they'll have to find ways of making new friends.

0:34:00 > 0:34:04Back in the UK, the family's social life revolves around sport,

0:34:04 > 0:34:07and they're keen members of their local rugby club.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11They're more used to playing in the dark and cold,

0:34:11 > 0:34:13so if one thing is going to persuade Kai

0:34:13 > 0:34:16there's more to life in Australia, this could be it.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18Kai seems confident.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22They look quite friendly and, er, fun.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26But their hosts aren't about to give a couple of poms an easy ride.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30- It's too hot here for you guys. - Show 'em a few things or two.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32I think we're going to play pretty hard today,

0:34:32 > 0:34:35to let the poms know what the Aussies are all about.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37They're going to melt.

0:34:37 > 0:34:41As the boys head into the fray, Heather and Simon meet the parents.

0:34:41 > 0:34:46They're hoping rugby offers them the kind of social scene it does in the UK.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49Here's a jersey. Put it on and we'll go.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51Hopefully they won't be too nasty on you.

0:34:51 > 0:34:55Rugby isn't as popular as other sports in Victoria, like football,

0:34:55 > 0:34:58but it does have a loyal following.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01I reckon it's a growing sport here. There's growing popularity.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04You've got half a dozen clubs within this area.

0:35:04 > 0:35:08They tend to run, you know, about eight or ten teams

0:35:08 > 0:35:10across the age groups.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13The boys both seem to be fitting in fine,

0:35:13 > 0:35:17and Heather hopes that getting involved in sporting clubs

0:35:17 > 0:35:20would really help the whole family integrate quickly.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23- That's it, guys. Good skills. - Let's go! One more!

0:35:24 > 0:35:28The pace quickens, and Kai and Tyler both show off some moves,

0:35:28 > 0:35:31even though it's nearly 40 degrees.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35Kai's always had reservations about the move,

0:35:35 > 0:35:38so has his taste of Aussie rugby changed anything?

0:35:38 > 0:35:41I don't know whether it's going to make any difference or not,

0:35:41 > 0:35:44to be totally honest. I still have no idea what I'm choosing.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47At ten years old, the move could be easier for Tyler.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50If I moved here, I'd be leaving all my friends behind,

0:35:50 > 0:35:53but, then, it might be fun here,

0:35:53 > 0:35:58but I haven't, like, stayed for long enough, really, to see.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00Maybe today, with the rugby,

0:36:00 > 0:36:05he's, um... Maybe it's swayed him even further towards the coming,

0:36:05 > 0:36:08you know, realising that he can make friends here,

0:36:08 > 0:36:11he's got another team that he can be loyal to,

0:36:11 > 0:36:14and, you know, have a good time with.

0:36:14 > 0:36:18Simon and Heather hope that a morning of Kai's favourite game

0:36:18 > 0:36:21will have helped sway his decision towards moving,

0:36:21 > 0:36:25but it could take more than a game of rugby to convince him.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27Based on what we've experienced this morning,

0:36:27 > 0:36:31and the potential for the social side of activities in Australia,

0:36:31 > 0:36:33we are going to vote...

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Australia.

0:36:43 > 0:36:44Australia.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49Simon and Heather's vote is no great surprise.

0:36:49 > 0:36:53Their fate really depends on the turn of the next two cards.

0:36:53 > 0:36:54England.

0:36:58 > 0:36:59England.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05I changed my mind at the last moment before I did that.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08- Why?- Do you see the potential?

0:37:08 > 0:37:13- You're confused, aren't you? - You're confused now.

0:37:13 > 0:37:14You're wavering.

0:37:14 > 0:37:19For Kai, the pressure of having to choose between what he knows and loves back home

0:37:19 > 0:37:22and an uncertain future in Australia is starting to show.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26I think Kai is more confused after today,

0:37:26 > 0:37:29and I think a lot of it comes down to loyalty.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32He has a loyalty to his friends and his clubs that he plays for

0:37:32 > 0:37:36back in the UK, and I think he's worried

0:37:36 > 0:37:40that, if he was to turn his back, as he sees it,

0:37:40 > 0:37:42turns his back on his friends and his clubs,

0:37:42 > 0:37:46and chooses to move over here, that he'll feel disloyal

0:37:46 > 0:37:50to the people who support him and he supports.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54It looks like Simon's dream is becoming less and less of a reality.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01Simon and Heather have their work cut out

0:38:01 > 0:38:04if they're going to persuade Kai to make the move,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07and they've all got to face up to the idea

0:38:07 > 0:38:10of leaving loved ones behind.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13Simon was like a son to his grandfather,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17and he's worried about how he would cope on the other side of the world.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20We've been very close. He's always been there for me

0:38:20 > 0:38:23when I have problems, and I've always been there for him

0:38:23 > 0:38:28when he's needed a helping hand. Being far away from him will be difficult to accept.

0:38:28 > 0:38:32We've prepared some messages from friends and family back in the UK.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36- Hi, everyone. Hi! - Hope you're having a great week.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39The first thing anybody notices about Heather is,

0:38:39 > 0:38:43she's dedicated to her family and wants to do the right thing by them.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47She's very non-judgemental, I think,

0:38:47 > 0:38:50and she just takes people for who they are,

0:38:50 > 0:38:53um, and is very easy to like.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57Simon's a happy-go-lucky chap. He's the outdoor type.

0:38:57 > 0:39:01He likes being out with the children down by the beach,

0:39:01 > 0:39:04out in the camper van... Yes.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06I think he makes the most of his time.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10I was more like a father to him than a grandfather.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Yes, a very close relationship grew up between us

0:39:13 > 0:39:16in those early years,

0:39:16 > 0:39:19and that relationship has remained.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Tyler's really creative.

0:39:22 > 0:39:26Um, he's a super character, super-natured lad.

0:39:26 > 0:39:31Tyler's just someone who's hard not to like when you get to know him,

0:39:31 > 0:39:34cos he's always there,

0:39:34 > 0:39:37and because of Kai, you just always end up talking to him

0:39:37 > 0:39:40because he's such a funny person.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44Kai is growing up to be, um...

0:39:44 > 0:39:47a really decent young lad.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49I mean, he's always been a super guy,

0:39:49 > 0:39:52very varied in his interests.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56I know both the boys do have reservations

0:39:56 > 0:39:59about going to Australia, and that will be quite difficult for them.

0:39:59 > 0:40:03There will be hurdles he'll have to jump over,

0:40:03 > 0:40:05and there's no doubt about it,

0:40:05 > 0:40:08if you make a big change like that, you'll find those.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12And you've got to work on those. He'll like that, anyway.

0:40:12 > 0:40:16We would be very, very sorry to see you go.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18But we want what's best for you,

0:40:18 > 0:40:21and if you decide the move over to Australia

0:40:21 > 0:40:25would suit you and your boys, obviously we would support you.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29I hope Australia has turned out to be what you've wanted it to be,

0:40:29 > 0:40:31and more.

0:40:31 > 0:40:35I hope you're finding it all right, but I wish you the best of luck,

0:40:35 > 0:40:39and I hope you'll make a go of this, and I hope you'll ensure

0:40:39 > 0:40:42that the boys settle down well enough with their schooling,

0:40:42 > 0:40:46and, most of all, make sure that they play rugby, as well.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49Teach the Australians how to do it.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51THEY LAUGH

0:40:51 > 0:40:53Bye-bye, now.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57- He's a sweetheart.- He is.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00No, I'll miss him.

0:41:00 > 0:41:02He is the one person I will miss.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08He's the one I'll miss most.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18It's always difficult leaving loved ones.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21The Littles have had a long week,

0:41:21 > 0:41:24and it's given them plenty to think about.

0:41:26 > 0:41:29By looking at the outer suburbs of Melbourne,

0:41:29 > 0:41:31they found some unique and very affordable properties.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35I could live here. There's enough to do to keep me occupied.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37There's a challenge here.

0:41:37 > 0:41:39Jobs for both Heather and Simon were promising.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42Interesting to find that, once I come over here,

0:41:42 > 0:41:45by just finding supply work in the schools,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48that I would secure full-time work.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51But the lifestyle just wasn't enough to persuade Kai

0:41:51 > 0:41:54that Australia was worth such a big move.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56I have a lot to lose if I move.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59At the moment my heart's telling me to stay in England.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02So, when it comes to the final decision,

0:42:02 > 0:42:04how will they vote?

0:42:07 > 0:42:09It's been an informative and interesting week,

0:42:09 > 0:42:13and it's now time for our final vote, and we are going to vote...

0:42:16 > 0:42:18- Australia.- Australia.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20And we are going to vote...

0:42:23 > 0:42:26Australia!

0:42:27 > 0:42:29England!

0:42:30 > 0:42:35I voted UK because I have a nice life there,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38and I don't really want to start again.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41I can understand Kai's point of view.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44He's at an age when it is very difficult

0:42:44 > 0:42:47to think about starting all over again.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51That leaves us with the opportunity to discuss and research more

0:42:51 > 0:42:54between the family.

0:42:54 > 0:42:56Maybe in a few years' time, after I've left school

0:42:56 > 0:42:59and moved on a bit, then maybe move over here.

0:42:59 > 0:43:03Simon and Heather had hoped their trial week in Australia

0:43:03 > 0:43:06would have persuaded the boys that life would be better down under,

0:43:06 > 0:43:10but making such a big move with older children is never easy,

0:43:10 > 0:43:15so let's hope the Littles can come to some sort of agreement eventually.
