0:00:02 > 0:00:06There's an enormous amount at stake when you want to uproot your family

0:00:06 > 0:00:09to move to the other side of the world.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Especially when your wife doesn't share your dream.

0:00:12 > 0:00:17Adrian McKeown wants to move down under for his children's future.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19I just think sometimes you have to go with your heart,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21and I feel that this is right for my family.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23- Hello!- 'I would probably have'

0:00:24 > 0:00:27as many reservations as he has reasons for going.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29CHILD GIGGLES

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Their experiences will push them to the edge.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35It's going to take something massive to knock me off this,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37and it'll be so hard if Kelley doesn't feel the same way.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42- Don't get cross with me. - I'm not getting cross!

0:00:42 > 0:00:45And when limits are pushed - anything can happen.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46'What if this didn't work out -'

0:00:46 > 0:00:49- where would- I- live? What would happen to the kids?

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Sometimes I wonder why we're on such a different wavelength about this.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19With its hot climate and over 10,000 beaches,

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Australia is a popular destination for Brits.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26Over 35,000 emigrate there every year.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28But is it all it's cracked up to be -

0:01:28 > 0:01:32when almost a third return to the UK, missing their old lives?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35The McKeowns are going to be pushed to the limit

0:01:35 > 0:01:39as they try out life in Australia for one week.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43At the end of it, they'll have a very tough decision to make -

0:01:43 > 0:01:47whether to stay in the UK, or to move down under.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54Adrian and Kelley McKeown live with daughters Kenedee, seven, and Madison, who's three,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58in a small village near Carrickfergus in County Antrim.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Adrian has lived here all his life,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02and has been dreaming of Australia since he was a child.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06'My best friend moved to Australia when I was eight -'

0:02:06 > 0:02:10that was the point then that I really started thinking,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12you know, there's different places here....

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Definitely, in the last couple of years,

0:02:14 > 0:02:18he's talked about it probably in every breath of every sentence!

0:02:18 > 0:02:21It kind of sometimes feels a wee bit like bungee jumping,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23and now he's got me to the top of the ladder

0:02:23 > 0:02:27he just has to convince me that the rope's not going to break... And I'm not convinced.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Adrian's memories of Northern Ireland during the Troubles

0:02:30 > 0:02:33have fuelled his desire to make a better future for his children.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37I was evacuated from school, we had a bomb scare out the back of our house...

0:02:37 > 0:02:41I know things have changed, but there are still the underlying tensions

0:02:41 > 0:02:47and I just...would love to get the girls to a place where they don't have to worry about that.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Australia might offer - and I stress MIGHT offer -

0:02:51 > 0:02:55that chance that they'll be able to have the future that THEY want.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58I think there probably are more opportunities, but

0:02:58 > 0:03:03erm...I don't necessarily think that being here is such a negative thing.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Adrian's under no illusions who he has to win over.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10The one I really need to convince is Kelley.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15- Erm...- It's not a case of convincing me - it's showing me rather than

0:03:15 > 0:03:19your one-sided opinion... nick-nick-nick in the background all the time.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22The only problem is, it's Kelley's job as a nurse

0:03:22 > 0:03:24that can provide the entrance visa.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27'I know for a fact that when we go there I'll have to work'

0:03:27 > 0:03:30'longer hours, just for us to be able to finance the move.'

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Definitely have to have a job before we would go.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36I think in the research that I've done

0:03:36 > 0:03:40I've proved that to you - that you COULD get a job.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Yeah, but I would still have to GET one.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45- I know.- Right. - But we know that.- Right...

0:03:45 > 0:03:49With close ties at home, there's a lot to lose.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51'We have a nice house and nice friends.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54'Good family support and a good church and just to give all that up

0:03:54 > 0:03:56'to hope that it will be better'

0:03:56 > 0:03:58is a pretty big gamble.

0:03:58 > 0:04:03If somebody could give me a guarantee that everything was going to be rosy, that would be good

0:04:03 > 0:04:06but the only person who seems to be able to say that is Adrian,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08who doesn't have any guarantees.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Unfortunately for Kelley, Adrian is obsessed.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14It's always been there and I don't think it would ever go away,

0:04:14 > 0:04:15regardless of what we decide.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Erm...

0:04:17 > 0:04:21I'm just hoping we make the right decision from my point of view.

0:04:24 > 0:04:30Their week down under will either bring them together or tear them apart

0:04:30 > 0:04:33so where in Australia shall we send them?

0:04:36 > 0:04:39It's Kelley's job as a nurse which will grant them their visa.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42As her skills are needed across the country,

0:04:42 > 0:04:43they could live anywhere.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48Perhaps they might like Darwin, Australia's most northern capital.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51As the least populous of Australia's big cities,

0:04:51 > 0:04:55the McKeowns might find themselves more at home

0:04:55 > 0:04:59but there's a smaller economy and only one major public hospital here

0:04:59 > 0:05:01so Kelley may struggle to get work.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04As Darwin's a hot-spot for Australian migrants,

0:05:04 > 0:05:07house prices have doubled in recent years.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13They could go to Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city.

0:05:13 > 0:05:19This would offer a radical change from their village life but, as sport and culture are massive here,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22the McKeowns would never run out of things to do.

0:05:22 > 0:05:27Although prices are rising rapidly, family incomes are higher than the national average,

0:05:27 > 0:05:32and with around 30 public hospitals, Kelley should have no problem finding work.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39Maybe a smaller city like Perth, in Western Australia, would be more suitable for the family.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44It's fast-growing, offering lots of work if Kelley can handle the competition.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47And as one in eight residents is British-born,

0:05:47 > 0:05:52the family should feel more at home here while finding their feet.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56House prices are slightly cheaper than Melbourne, so that dream home might be in reach.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59Three good options for the McKeowns there,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01each of them life-changing.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04But where in Australia should they go?

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Well, we decided that Melbourne had the edge over

0:06:07 > 0:06:11the other two possibilities for their trial week down under.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17Although housing is expensive, there are affordable options in the suburbs

0:06:17 > 0:06:21and as Melbourne offers great career prospects for Kelley,

0:06:21 > 0:06:23it might just help ease her pain.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25I'm shaking more now than I was before going in.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27I feel under pressure to be honest.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Over the course of the week, there'll be a lot of soul-searching

0:06:31 > 0:06:33but will Adrian and Kelley ever see eye to eye?

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Just need to find a compromise for you.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38For me? I have to compromise?

0:06:38 > 0:06:40No, we have to find a compromise house.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45'If Kelley doesn't vote for Australia, I won't say

0:06:45 > 0:06:50I'll not be disappointed. It will take me a long time to recover.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53I feel very lonely, on the outskirts.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59It's a long trip for a family with young children.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03The McKeowns fly from Belfast via London, Dubai and Singapore,

0:07:03 > 0:07:07spanning a distance of over 11,000 miles.

0:07:07 > 0:07:12They touch down in Melbourne having been in transit for 34 hours.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Adrian know he only has one week to convince Kelley

0:07:15 > 0:07:18and he's already feeling the pressure.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about coming over.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24I didn't think I would be. Am I going to get a shock?

0:07:24 > 0:07:29Because I've maybe had this real desire to be here for a long time

0:07:29 > 0:07:33and maybe having this blinkered view of what things will be like.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36I haven't been feeling anything about this trip.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39- I have been on distraction mode, scrubbing my house. Haven't I?- Yeah.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44So the house is gleaming and we're here, with open minds, both of us.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Yeah. This is my big opportunity to persuade somebody that this might be

0:07:48 > 0:07:51the right thing for us so... Yeah, bring it on.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00It's crunch time for the family as they head into the unknown.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03They've never been so far away from home before

0:08:03 > 0:08:08and Melbourne's just a little bit bigger than the small Northern Irish village they're used to.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- GPS:- You have reached your destination.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13A bungalow!

0:08:15 > 0:08:16Mummy said it was cute.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20The family are staying in the convenient inner suburb of Yarraville.

0:08:20 > 0:08:21What do you think of this?

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Look! Look at that big bed.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27- That could be for you, Daddy. - Do you think?- There's a fireplace.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29- Wow!- It's lovely.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31It's beautiful.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35This small townhouse has three bedrooms,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37a homely living area

0:08:37 > 0:08:39and a bright garden.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Hopefully, it will please all the family.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- Look at this.- Oh, Maddy, would you like to play out here?

0:08:44 > 0:08:49This is...what I was looking for, to be honest.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Nice and warm.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56Stop giving me funny looks, Kelley!

0:08:56 > 0:08:58You stop being cheesy!

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Uh...mmm...

0:09:02 > 0:09:09I don't even know what the thing is that would be the thing that would make me want to go,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11"Oh, yeah, definitely!"

0:09:11 > 0:09:14We just have to keep an open mind, both of us.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16- Both of us?- That's what I said.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- And see what we'll see.- Mmm-hmm.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23Go away!

0:09:23 > 0:09:28It's going to take a lot more than a nice townhouse and a bit of sunshine for Kelley to move.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Adrian has his work cut out.

0:09:30 > 0:09:31It is my one and only shot.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35It's this week or nothing. It's not going to happen.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Back in Northern Ireland, the McKeown family

0:09:42 > 0:09:45own a four bedroom property in a small village near Belfast.

0:09:45 > 0:09:50If they sold up for a good price they would have a budget of around £230,000.

0:09:50 > 0:09:56But Kelley loves their home, so it would take a lot for her to let it go.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01There's no doubt the McKeowns will want to find a home

0:10:01 > 0:10:05to make this heart-wrenching move seem worthwhile.

0:10:05 > 0:10:10Finding that dream house will depend upon the area they choose to live.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13And, ultimately, how much they have to spend.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16The family are used to living by the sea,

0:10:16 > 0:10:18so this may be a good choice for them Down Under.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22But coastal homes can be expensive.

0:10:22 > 0:10:27This property has only two bedrooms and, priced at £250,000,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29is slightly over their budget.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Living in the city has many benefits.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34There'd be no commute to work for Kelley

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Plus cultural activities for the whole family

0:10:36 > 0:10:38are literally around the corner.

0:10:38 > 0:10:45Property prices are booming and places like this can cost upwards of £350,000.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50So the McKeowns would have to look further out of town to find something more affordable.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55The leads us on to the rural suburbs where properties are much cheaper.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57The McKeowns could pick up

0:10:57 > 0:10:59a three-bedroom home in a new development

0:10:59 > 0:11:02to fit their £230,000 budget.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06We decided to show them three properties in the country town of Lilydale.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10It has good schools and is only a 40-minute commute to the city.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Built in a traditional wooden-slatted style,

0:11:13 > 0:11:15property one has three bedrooms

0:11:15 > 0:11:19and is slightly under budget at £200,000.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21This is Adrian's first real opportunity

0:11:21 > 0:11:23to show Kelley what Australia has to offer.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26He prays the home will help to win her over.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Look at the kerb, you eejit! There's a flipping tree there, you doughnut!

0:11:30 > 0:11:32- Will you stop shouting?- No.

0:11:32 > 0:11:33Right, girls.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40First stop is the rather cosy kitchen.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Oh, the kitchen's tiny, Kelley.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- Yeah.- It's very tiny.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- It's not big enough for more than one person.- No.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52And then, it's so separate from everything else, you'd be a bit...

0:11:52 > 0:11:56- OK.- It's still a lot smaller than what we've got at home.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00It's nice and bright.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03- Really? And the light's on. The house is quite dark. - Do you think so?- Yeah.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07Not a good start. Maybe the backyard will come to the rescue.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Now, this is nice out here.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Yeah, it's nice to have a nice barbecue in the dark(!)

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Perhaps not.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Yeah, but you can... get the sun over here.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20You could stand in that one foot square piece of sunshine.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25It's just very dark to be somewhere where you're supposed to be outdoor living,

0:12:25 > 0:12:30it's kind of, you're not getting any of the benefit of the sunshine.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34- And it's made of wood. - You don't like the wooden houses...

0:12:34 > 0:12:39- Houses are supposed to be made of bricks.- No, they're not! You have to forget that, that's back home.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- There are houses here made of brick. - Yes, there are but...

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- other houses are made of wood. - But they might fall down.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48All right! Can you stop fighting with me?

0:12:50 > 0:12:52That's round one to Kelley.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54Off to property number two.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Property two also has three bedrooms

0:13:00 > 0:13:03but is a bit more expensive at £230,000.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06That's just within their budget.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09And if a large swimming pool and views of the mountain ranges

0:13:09 > 0:13:12can't tempt Kelley, then nothing will.

0:13:15 > 0:13:16Oh, wow!

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- It's in the sky!- It's in the sky.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23- It feels we could jump into... - You have your own swimming pool.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Would that be good? - I want to live here already.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27Do you?

0:13:27 > 0:13:28This is nice.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31- Flags.- Flags!

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Oh, this is a little bit bigger than the last house, isn't it?

0:13:34 > 0:13:38- Yeah.- Oh, look at that. That's better.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- Yes, you wouldn't feel like you were stuck in...- No, that's much better.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44And it's got room for a dishwasher!

0:13:44 > 0:13:47- Oh, look at this room!- Ah!

0:13:47 > 0:13:48- Hmmm.- Oh.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Look - this is quite big.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55- It's got big built-in wardrobes. - You wouldn't even need anything else.

0:13:55 > 0:13:56I know whose room this might be.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00- Whose room might this be? - My room!- Your room!

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Look at all the toys in there.

0:14:02 > 0:14:07I think it's lovely. I didn't think we would find a house with this sort of size rooms

0:14:07 > 0:14:09and a pool in our budget.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14I really didn't think we'd find a house with a pool in our budget at all.

0:14:14 > 0:14:15Yeah.

0:14:15 > 0:14:19I just think it's fantastic.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21What do you think? You think you could live here?

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Erm... I don't know.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28I don't know that our home at home is my dream home,

0:14:28 > 0:14:30but I do like it.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Just need to find a compromise for you.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35For me, I have to compromise?

0:14:35 > 0:14:38- No, we have to find a compromise house.- You said, "For you".

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Yeah, a house that you like, which...

0:14:41 > 0:14:44We're not going to be able to get a house like we have back home.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46So we need to find a house you do like.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49- I've found a house that I like. - That's not what you said.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52That's what I meant.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55The pressure is just getting too much for Kelley to bear.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Although the kids look settled,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Mum and Dad have a lot to sort through if they're ever

0:15:18 > 0:15:19going to make the move.

0:15:19 > 0:15:24It may all look tempting, but for Kelley, it's just not home.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32Property three is a contemporary design, offering the four bedrooms

0:15:32 > 0:15:35the family crave, plus two spacious living areas.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38It's on the market for £250,000,

0:15:38 > 0:15:42so slightly over budget. But this is what it might take

0:15:42 > 0:15:43to win Kelley over.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Nice path, isn't it?

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Oh, look at this.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53- Whose room do you think this would be?- Yours and Daddy's.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55- Yeah.- It's a good-sized room, isn't it?

0:15:55 > 0:15:57It is, yeah.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01- Kitchen.- Sun room. Ah, look at this.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Kitchen.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05This is nice.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Oh, this is nice.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13- Oh...- Oh, what's this?

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Nice balcony. You could have fun out here.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18It's a long house, so it's going to have a big, long garden.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20It just keeps going.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23There's more space here than they'd ever imagined.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27A big shed and everything.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30I just think this place is absolutely incredible.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Just the sheer space, the sheer size of it.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37I like the number two house because it's got the swimming pool.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41And I like this house because it's got a very big garden

0:16:41 > 0:16:43and four bedrooms.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45You could play hide-and-seek, couldn't you?

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Yeah. We could hide behind anything.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51It's like a little fairy garden.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53It's absolutely gorgeous.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56If I was to rate this house out of ten, it would probably be

0:16:56 > 0:16:58more than the first two houses added together.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01It's much more what we would need.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04And I love the fact that there's somewhere for the girls to play.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07And it's all enclosed, so it's safe.

0:17:07 > 0:17:12I... I think it's probably right at the very top end of our budget,

0:17:12 > 0:17:15if not slightly outside it.

0:17:15 > 0:17:21- Although that's going to depend on what we can get work-wise.- Yes.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24- I just think it's fantastic. - It's a little fairy garden.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26I can imagine fairies dancing round the tree.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28I think the girls would love it.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30- I think... - Shh, you'll wake the fairies!

0:17:30 > 0:17:33(Shh, there's fairies in there.)

0:17:35 > 0:17:37They have seen three very different homes.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40But although Adrian loved what he saw,

0:17:40 > 0:17:44Kelley still hankered for her beloved place back in Northern Ireland.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Was property three enough to persuade her?

0:17:46 > 0:17:49It's time for the first vote of the week.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53OK, between houses in Australia and houses in the UK,

0:17:53 > 0:17:55we're going to vote...

0:17:57 > 0:17:59ADRIAN AND THE GIRLS: Australia!

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Mummy says UK!

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Mummy wants UK.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09I'm shocked, why did you choose UK?

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Because I still like my house more.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13And I still prefer bricks to sticks.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17- You're not supposed to get cross with me.- I'm not getting cross.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21I don't think Adrian understands how hard it is

0:18:21 > 0:18:24because he's still caught up in his own little bubble.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27I suppose Adrian said earlier on, "You'll have to make the compromise."

0:18:27 > 0:18:30It feels like it'll be me that makes the compromise in everything.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34It's more like submission rather than compromise, it feels like.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38I don't know what that would do to us in the long term.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41Obviously I want all of us to be happy, but I don't want

0:18:41 > 0:18:45for me to be unhappy to make that happen, if that makes sense.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48I feel very lonely on the outskirts.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50But...

0:18:52 > 0:18:53..that's OK.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57I'm quite happy with my loneliness at the minute.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Poor Kelley is feeling the pressure.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05She has serious doubts.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08But it's her job that will get them the entry visa

0:19:08 > 0:19:11that would make the whole thing possible.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Kelley's career in the UK means everything to her.

0:19:15 > 0:19:19The job in Antrim's the only I've had since I qualified in nursing,

0:19:19 > 0:19:21so it would be difficult to leave that security.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Especially when it's at the other side of the world,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27and you're not going to know anybody.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30I'm really hoping that I have an open mind.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Down under, Adrian knows his dream move hinges on Kelley's

0:19:33 > 0:19:37experience at work. Already, tempers are fraying.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39Adrian, watch where you're going.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Is there anything you really want to ask them?

0:19:41 > 0:19:43I just told you, if they have jobs.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Yea, but is that it? Are you happy enough with the job?

0:19:46 > 0:19:48I don't know what it's going to be.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51I'm sure the hospital's a big place, it depends what department it is.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- You're shouting at me.- I'm not.

0:19:53 > 0:19:54- Yes, you are.- No, I'm not.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57I was asking you questions and you weren't talking to me.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00I was thinking about the answer.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04The ward Kelley will be working in today treats babies

0:20:04 > 0:20:06flown in from all over Australia.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08So it's bigger and more specialised than the maternity unit

0:20:08 > 0:20:10she's used to back home.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12- See you later.- Love you, Mum.

0:20:12 > 0:20:17Kelley may be able to better her 16 grand UK part-time salary,

0:20:17 > 0:20:20but for her, it's not just about the money.

0:20:20 > 0:20:21I really enjoy my job in the UK,

0:20:21 > 0:20:25so it would have to be something that would be on par with that.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27I wouldn't want to just work because I had to,

0:20:27 > 0:20:32I would want to find something that was enjoyable and I could give everything to.

0:20:32 > 0:20:33Hello, Kelley.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Boss Sheri Waldron wastes no time throwing her into the mix.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Her interpersonal skills are essential to the job,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42so meeting a new baby's father is a good test.

0:20:42 > 0:20:43Hi, nice to meet you.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- This is Kelley, visiting from Northern Ireland.- Hi.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48- Is this your first baby?- Yeah.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51- Been a bit of a roller coaster, I'm sure.- Yeah, bit of a surprise.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53- But she's going OK.- Yeah?

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Has she needed surgery or anything?

0:20:55 > 0:20:58- No, she's avoided the surgery. - That's good.

0:20:58 > 0:21:02Just a sleep study next week, hopefully, to keep her clear.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05She looks like she's thriving and getting big.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Yeah, she's put on weight the last few weeks.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09The feeds are going well.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Good luck when you get her home.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14- Thanks.- And good luck, you.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17BABY CRIES I think that's our cue to leave!

0:21:17 > 0:21:19- It is!- Well, thanks very much again.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21- OK.- OK, bye.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Well, boss Sheri seems impressed.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26But does Kelley really want to be there?

0:21:26 > 0:21:29Meanwhile, Adrian and the children grab recruitment manager,

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Neil Chandaria, on his lunch break.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34- How are you?- OK.- Yeah?

0:21:34 > 0:21:38Adrian is desperate to find out what his job prospects are down under.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41My biggest concern is, I'm a recruitment manager back home,

0:21:41 > 0:21:44I do have a team of staff that work under me.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48I'm worried about...would I get a similar role out here?

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Or would I find myself right back at the start, being an administrator

0:21:51 > 0:21:55- and working my way up? - I think that's a bit drastic.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59I think that you may have to take a very small step backwards,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02in order to gain those stripes and move forward.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06Yeah, I suppose you do need to get an understanding of the labour market,

0:22:06 > 0:22:07- the laws and stuff.- Absolutely.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10If I was to come out

0:22:10 > 0:22:12and have to go back to the likes of a senior recruiter role,

0:22:12 > 0:22:18what sort of package would be on offer for that type of work?

0:22:18 > 0:22:20I would anticipate a salary package of around...

0:22:20 > 0:22:2570-80,000 dollars, is certainly achievable.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27- That would be achievable? - I would say so.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31- Catch you soon. - Thanks, mate, really appreciate it.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35I found my meeting with Neil very useful.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38Really nice surprise when he told me about the salaries,

0:22:38 > 0:22:41the basic scale is nearly £10,000 more

0:22:41 > 0:22:43than what I'm getting back in the UK.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45So that was a really nice surprise.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- SHE SCREAMS - Woah!

0:22:48 > 0:22:51My biggest concern is for Kelley, how she's getting on

0:22:51 > 0:22:54over at the hospital. She was very nervous this morning,

0:22:54 > 0:22:56although she wouldn't let on to anybody.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Even going up in the car, she wouldn't admit

0:22:58 > 0:23:00that she was feeling nervous about it.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04I'm just hoping that she likes what she sees there.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08At the hospital, Sheri introduces Kelley to fellow Brit Amy,

0:23:08 > 0:23:10who might be able to win her over.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Did you find it difficult settling in?

0:23:13 > 0:23:15I think the first three to six months,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18I was ready to pack up and go home.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20Just missing family and home and everything.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23But I've made some fantastic friends here,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26and it's probably the best thing I've ever done.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- My husband will be pleased with you for saying these things!- Yeah!

0:23:29 > 0:23:32I'm a bit more realistic than he is,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36and I want to explore every little nook and cranny of moving.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38It is a good move, I have to say.

0:23:38 > 0:23:43I think he thinks, "Oh, your name's on a list of wanted jobs, let's go."

0:23:43 > 0:23:47Kelley is that bit more careful and a bit more thoughtful through things.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50I just think, sometimes you have to go with your heart.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52And I feel that this is right for my family.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55It does get a little bit frustrating sometimes,

0:23:55 > 0:23:59that she doesn't seem to understand how passionate I am about it.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01Yeah, it does.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Sorry.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10Sometimes I wonder why we're on such a different wavelength

0:24:10 > 0:24:11about the thing.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Kelley's very much, you know...

0:24:18 > 0:24:21everything you've got, you've got back home.

0:24:21 > 0:24:26But I'm looking at the longer term.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30And what future I have for my two girls.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33And I don't see the future back at home.

0:24:33 > 0:24:39And I think somewhere like Australia, Melbourne in particular,

0:24:39 > 0:24:41just offers them so much more.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44My husband has had it in his head

0:24:44 > 0:24:46from when he was about eight years old,

0:24:46 > 0:24:49that he would like to emigrate to Australia.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Part of me is intrigued but part of me is...

0:24:52 > 0:24:56I don't know whether I'm too sensible or too scared or what it is.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58There is a lot of support,

0:24:58 > 0:25:01and it's very easy to build networks.

0:25:01 > 0:25:06Some of our nurses, they love it when new people start.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Somebody will organise a barbecue or we all go to the tennis,

0:25:09 > 0:25:10or we go and see a show.

0:25:10 > 0:25:15- It feels a little bit overwhelming, I think.- Yeah.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17- I feel under pressure.- Yeah.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19It's going to take something massive

0:25:19 > 0:25:22to knock me off this.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28And that's going to be so difficult, if Kelley doesn't feel the same way.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Oh...

0:25:33 > 0:25:36Adrian and I have been talking about prospective jobs over here.

0:25:36 > 0:25:42I think he is sick of me banging on about this, that and the other.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44"Reality, reality, reality."

0:25:44 > 0:25:46I think I've been quite negative because...

0:25:46 > 0:25:49I think when you've only worked in one place,

0:25:49 > 0:25:50I suppose it's safe.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Every part of me wants to lie and say, "No, it was awful,

0:25:53 > 0:25:54"I could never work here."

0:25:54 > 0:25:57I feel positive in that I like it.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59But that's scary for me.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02Yeah, I just feel a little unsettled.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05I think I'm shaking a bit more now than I was before I went in!

0:26:05 > 0:26:08I can't distinguish whether it's excitement or nerves,

0:26:08 > 0:26:10but yeah, I don't know.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15I just feel a bit... "Woah!"

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Will Kelley be able to fit her family into a new life down under?

0:26:20 > 0:26:24She's obviously torn, and finding it hard to work out what she feels

0:26:24 > 0:26:25about a move.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Emotions are running high.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30There's Mummy. Wave.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33- Hello!- Hi, there.

0:26:34 > 0:26:35- Hiya.- Hello.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38- So how'd you get on? - Yeah, it was really good,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41the girl was really nice. All the people were really friendly.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43What was the unit like compared to yours?

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Massive, big and spacious.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48Did she say anything about opportunities for you?

0:26:48 > 0:26:51She said that if I felt like it was somewhere I wanted to work,

0:26:51 > 0:26:54I could just give her a ring, she would have a chat with me.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57OK, so do you want to move to Australia?

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Erm, pass!

0:27:01 > 0:27:04No, no cop-outs, do you want to move to Australia?

0:27:04 > 0:27:08Pass. It's not a question I can answer straightaway.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12Kelley's not quite ready for the big decision yet, Adrian.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15But as far as work is concerned, how will she vote?

0:27:15 > 0:27:19We've both been looking at job prospects here today.

0:27:19 > 0:27:20And we're going to take a vote.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23And we're going to vote for...

0:27:25 > 0:27:27BOTH: Australia.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29Are you surprised?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Daddy's surprised too.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33- It's only one vote. - Are we going to do it?

0:27:33 > 0:27:34There's still one vote.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41Kelley is finally warming to

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Adrian's dream of moving to Australia.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47But, with financial storms brewing,

0:27:47 > 0:27:48their truce is hardly likely to last.

0:27:48 > 0:27:52- I'm not patronising you, but... - You are patronising me.

0:27:52 > 0:27:53I don't mean to, but...

0:27:53 > 0:27:56And facing up to the prospect of leaving loved ones behind

0:27:56 > 0:27:59is not going to be easy for anyone.

0:27:59 > 0:28:00'I agree it was wrong of me,'

0:28:00 > 0:28:05but I was very hurt to think that they were going to move away.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08I would miss Kenedee and Madison so much.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12'I just would, because they're them.'

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Even if Kelley does side with Adrian,

0:28:21 > 0:28:24there's still the question of cost.

0:28:24 > 0:28:28Can they actually afford to make the move at all?

0:28:28 > 0:28:29Back in Northern Ireland,

0:28:29 > 0:28:32the McKeowns own a spacious four-bedroom property,

0:28:32 > 0:28:36which Adrian believes to be worth around £190,000.

0:28:38 > 0:28:42We arranged for two estate agents to give a more recent valuation.

0:28:48 > 0:28:49Very nice kitchen.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52Belfast sink.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54'Good spacious accommodation, yeah.'

0:28:56 > 0:28:59Dining room is a bit small and tight.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01(That's cos we've got a big table.)

0:29:08 > 0:29:10Something tells me this is a girl's room(!)

0:29:10 > 0:29:12FAMILY CHUCKLE

0:29:14 > 0:29:16Hmm, you could do with a pair of sunglasses in here,

0:29:16 > 0:29:20- 'but it's a nice-sized double room.' - Oh, the cheek!

0:29:20 > 0:29:23Yep, three good double rooms

0:29:23 > 0:29:25and a smaller boxroom.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28That's not a boxroom. You can't get a bed in a boxroom.

0:29:28 > 0:29:32A year ago, this property would have valued around £220,000-£225,000.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35Due to the current decline in the housing market,

0:29:35 > 0:29:39I would see this on the market around about £145,000-£150,000.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41(Huh? No way.)

0:29:41 > 0:29:44- Told you.- No, that's too low.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47If I was valuing this property today and putting it on the market today,

0:29:47 > 0:29:50my valuation would be £140,000.

0:29:52 > 0:29:57As the guy said, this time last year, you would have been looking, 200-220 for it

0:29:57 > 0:30:01and I think, realistically, I was expecting at least 160 for it.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03That's what I thought it would be.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07You know, I'm quite shocked at them saying 140, 145.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10It has... It's knocked me back.

0:30:10 > 0:30:14It's not the end of the world, but it's not what I was expecting.

0:30:15 > 0:30:16Might be the end of your world.

0:30:19 > 0:30:23The balance of power may be shifting in Kelley's direction,

0:30:23 > 0:30:26but there could be even more financial surprises in store.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30We've prepared a breakdown of their daily Australian expenses,

0:30:30 > 0:30:33so they can see if they can actually afford to live here.

0:30:34 > 0:30:35Phone and internet...

0:30:35 > 0:30:37That's 55.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39Gas and electricity...

0:30:39 > 0:30:41130 a month here.

0:30:41 > 0:30:42Rice...

0:30:42 > 0:30:44Really expensive.

0:30:44 > 0:30:48- That's because it's boil in the bag. - Chocolate is much more expensive.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50It's three times the price.

0:30:50 > 0:30:54After crunching the numbers, do they end up better,

0:30:54 > 0:30:56or worse, off in Australia?

0:30:56 > 0:30:59OK, and do the difference in salaries.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01- Stop doing... - I'm not patronising you, but...

0:31:01 > 0:31:07- You are patronising me. - ..do the calculation.

0:31:07 > 0:31:11- So, we would be six and a half grand a year...- That's a month.

0:31:11 > 0:31:16- ..£540 a month better off. - At that exchange rate.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19The salaries over here seem to be that much better

0:31:19 > 0:31:22and, erm, that's going to make a huge difference to us.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27What if you still want to move here?

0:31:27 > 0:31:30I'm not asking you how you're going to move,

0:31:30 > 0:31:33- I'm asking, would that help a little bit, having more money?- No.

0:31:33 > 0:31:37- I said I wasn't going to base the decision on one thing.- It would help.

0:31:39 > 0:31:44It's shocked me that we are, potentially, that better off.

0:31:46 > 0:31:51One thing isn't going to make the final decision, but I suppose it is not a cross.

0:31:52 > 0:31:53And another tick?

0:31:53 > 0:31:55No, I just said it's not a cross.

0:31:55 > 0:32:01Despite being better off Down Under, Kelley still seems unconvinced,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03so which way will they vote on the cost of living?

0:32:03 > 0:32:06Based on the cost of living, we are going to vote...

0:32:06 > 0:32:08BOTH: Australia!

0:32:12 > 0:32:17That is another vote from Kelley for Australia,

0:32:17 > 0:32:20but if you move to the other side of the world,

0:32:20 > 0:32:25one of the hardest things to cope with is leaving loved ones behind.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28We've prepared some messages, from friends and family,

0:32:28 > 0:32:30back home in Northern Ireland.

0:32:32 > 0:32:33Hi, everybody.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35I hope you have had a wonderful time.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38I've missed you, especially you, Kenedee and Madison.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42'Kelley, Adrian and the girls are a brilliant family unit.'

0:32:42 > 0:32:46They just really gel together. They are just lovely.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49'Adrian's quite quiet. Very quiet,'

0:32:49 > 0:32:51very personable.

0:32:51 > 0:32:52He loves his family to bits -

0:32:52 > 0:32:55Kelley and the kids, as well as the bigger family.

0:32:55 > 0:33:00If I ever wanted a son-in-law, I wouldn't want one any different than Adrian.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02THEY LAUGH

0:33:02 > 0:33:04'Kelley is my daughter, but she is my best friend'

0:33:04 > 0:33:09and sometimes she is like a mum to me, as well.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12'I see her every day and even, well, not every day,

0:33:12 > 0:33:14'we speak on the phone.'

0:33:14 > 0:33:18Kenedee and Madison have both completely individual personalities,

0:33:18 > 0:33:22'but both are amazing personalities, and for them'

0:33:22 > 0:33:26not to be here - and I might not see them for a number of years,

0:33:26 > 0:33:27if not again -

0:33:27 > 0:33:30'that would be extremely difficult.'

0:33:30 > 0:33:34'About 18 months ago, Kenedee was up here'

0:33:34 > 0:33:37and, erm, she just came out of the blue and said,

0:33:37 > 0:33:41"Oh, we might...we're going to go and live in Australia, in a house with a swimming pool."

0:33:41 > 0:33:45'I just couldn't wait for Kelley to get back and I was in tears,

0:33:45 > 0:33:50'"What's this about you going to Australia?" I was devastated. I was angry, which was wrong,'

0:33:50 > 0:33:54but I was very hurt, to think that they were going to move away.

0:33:54 > 0:34:01'If they leave Northern Ireland, for us, it's pretty devastating. You just don't build up'

0:34:01 > 0:34:05your friendships easily and quickly in life and, erm,

0:34:05 > 0:34:09'that's just the key to life, isn't it, and to living?'

0:34:09 > 0:34:11'We brought them up to the best of our ability.'

0:34:11 > 0:34:14As the saying says, "You can lead a horse to water,

0:34:14 > 0:34:16"but you can't make it drink."

0:34:16 > 0:34:19'That's how it is.'

0:34:19 > 0:34:21I would miss Kenedee and Madison so much...

0:34:23 > 0:34:24..cos, erm...

0:34:26 > 0:34:30'..I just would, because they are kin.'

0:34:30 > 0:34:33I don't know what your decision is going to be.

0:34:33 > 0:34:38'I know it will be difficult for you, it will be difficult for us, but whatever you decide,

0:34:38 > 0:34:42'we will support you and can't wait'

0:34:42 > 0:34:44to see you back home.

0:34:44 > 0:34:45Love you.

0:34:47 > 0:34:48I'm missing them.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50Missing who?

0:34:50 > 0:34:51Everyone.

0:34:51 > 0:34:52Everybody?

0:34:52 > 0:34:54SHE SOBS

0:34:54 > 0:34:58MADISON: Dry those tears up, please. I don't like people crying.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00- I know you don't. - Have you been crying lots?

0:35:00 > 0:35:04I don't want to sound callous, but it probably doesn't change

0:35:04 > 0:35:05what my decision would be...

0:35:07 > 0:35:10..because there are so many ways we can keep in touch now.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13Obviously, I'm upset that she's upset and...

0:35:15 > 0:35:18..if we decide to move here, we might have six months or a year

0:35:18 > 0:35:23or longer of this, who knows? But at the end of the day,

0:35:23 > 0:35:24it has to be our decision.

0:35:24 > 0:35:29I don't know. I didn't think Kenedee would get as upset, so...

0:35:29 > 0:35:34I thought she would get upset, but I didn't think she would just be as upset.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36- Did you think you would get that upset?- No.

0:35:36 > 0:35:37No?

0:35:37 > 0:35:39KENEDEE WHIMPERS

0:35:42 > 0:35:46It's very hard seeing messages from loved ones,

0:35:46 > 0:35:48especially for the children,

0:35:48 > 0:35:53but if the McKeowns are going to go through all the pain of separation from their roots,

0:35:53 > 0:35:57they have to be sure their new life is going to be worth it.

0:35:58 > 0:36:03In Northern Ireland, church is extremely important to Adrian and Kelley.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05- Is it your first time here?- Yep.

0:36:05 > 0:36:10Adrian hopes that finding a similar community Down Under will help persuade Kelley to make the move.

0:36:10 > 0:36:13- I want to be at the far side. - We're not to go to the far side.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16I want to be the fourth person in.

0:36:16 > 0:36:17# Hallelujah... #

0:36:17 > 0:36:23The Donvale Presbyterian Church has a weekly congregation of a thousand people

0:36:23 > 0:36:26and welcomes new members from all backgrounds.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31This should be a great way for the McKeowns to meet like-minded people.

0:36:31 > 0:36:36Everyone seems to know each other and chat, and there's lots of people still hanging around

0:36:36 > 0:36:39nearly an hour after the service has finished, so that's a good sign.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42Everybody has been incredibly friendly.

0:36:42 > 0:36:46It just seems really, really nice. I've really, really enjoyed it.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Well, it's thumbs up for church. Now it's time for the children to have some fun.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59Game on!

0:36:59 > 0:37:04I would have to say this is probably one of the nicest places I've ever been.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06It's nice to be able to swim outside.

0:37:06 > 0:37:11You can safely say there's nowhere like this back home in Northern Ireland.

0:37:13 > 0:37:18Daughter Kenedee has a weak muscle condition and this place would be perfect to help strengthen them up.

0:37:18 > 0:37:23We know that swim is very important to Kenedee, with her wee problem with her legs.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27We'd be very happy for her to come somewhere like this as often as she wanted.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30All the facilities here for her are really good

0:37:30 > 0:37:35on what she's been prescribed and what she needs, so... it's really good.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40As ever, Adrian's mind is on his wife.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42Kelley does seem to be very positive today.

0:37:42 > 0:37:47I know she had a bit of a restless night, but...

0:37:47 > 0:37:51I'm keeping fingers crossed that this place may be getting to her

0:37:51 > 0:37:53and hopefully getting to her in the right way.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57We hope so too, Adrian.

0:37:57 > 0:38:02I just feel a bit under pressure, but...I'm trying not to let it get me down as much.

0:38:12 > 0:38:17The McKeown family have had an active day out. Now it's time to vote on lifestyle.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20For lifestyle we vote...

0:38:20 > 0:38:22Australia!

0:38:27 > 0:38:29Ever since he was a child,

0:38:29 > 0:38:34Adrian has dreamt of leaving Northern Ireland and moving to Australia

0:38:34 > 0:38:37but a certain someone has always stood in his way.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40The one I really need to convince is Kelley.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43It's not a case of convincing me, it's showing me, rather than...

0:38:43 > 0:38:47your one-sided opinion, "nik-nik-nik" in the background all the time.

0:38:47 > 0:38:51I don't necessarily think that being here is such a negative thing.

0:38:51 > 0:38:55As soon as they touched down in Australia, cracks started to show.

0:38:55 > 0:39:00- This would be the final compromise for you.- For me. I have to compromise.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03It's more like submission rather than compromise.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06I don't know what that would do to us in the long term.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10To Kelley's amazement, she enjoyed her work day.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12Everybody was so nice and friendly

0:39:12 > 0:39:14and I feel a bit, "Uhhh..."

0:39:14 > 0:39:18But despite a vote for Australia the battle was far from over.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22I'm not asking you, "Are you going to move?", I'm asking, "Would that help a bit?"

0:39:22 > 0:39:25I said I wasn't going to base a decision on one thing.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29Sometimes I wonder why we're on such a different wavelength about the thing.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33I feel very lonely on the outskirts.

0:39:33 > 0:39:36The McKeowns have tried Australia for one week

0:39:36 > 0:39:39and Kelley's eyes have been opened to Adrian's dream

0:39:39 > 0:39:44but is it enough to persuade her to take such a massive step?

0:39:45 > 0:39:48Adrian knows exactly what's at stake.

0:39:48 > 0:39:52I would quite happily say that this week has been the best week of my life.

0:39:52 > 0:39:57It's just doubled my determination that this is the right place for my family to grow up.

0:39:57 > 0:40:02If Kelley doesn't vote for Australia I'm not going to lie and say I'll not be disappointed.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06It will take me a long time...to... to recover.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09This last week has been a bit horrendous for me.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Adrian and I have had a few more deep and meaningful conversations

0:40:13 > 0:40:15than we've had in the last three or four years,

0:40:15 > 0:40:19but that's not a bad thing, because it's not something you do lightly.

0:40:19 > 0:40:23Even when we were looking at houses, I was thinking, "What if this didn't work out?

0:40:23 > 0:40:27"Where would I live and where would Adrian live and what would happen to the kids?"

0:40:27 > 0:40:30That's actually been the worst thing all week.

0:40:30 > 0:40:35If we're going to move to the other side of the world for us we have to be completely secure,

0:40:35 > 0:40:41and I think we needed to hear that we would be there for each other and it would be a decision for both of us.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Mummy and Daddy have been really different today.

0:40:45 > 0:40:49They've been starting to get really kind and less shouty and everything,

0:40:49 > 0:40:52and I think it's because it's becoming

0:40:52 > 0:40:56even sunnier than yesterday or something.

0:40:56 > 0:41:01I was 27 whenever me and Kelley got together

0:41:01 > 0:41:04and I was thinking, "That's it, I'm never going to meet anybody,"

0:41:04 > 0:41:08and then this lovely girl walked into my life and just changed it.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11So my first reaction was, "I'm not losing this girl."

0:41:11 > 0:41:14I love the way he loves the girls...

0:41:15 > 0:41:19..and I love the way he's so passionate about things...although it drives me crazy sometimes.

0:41:19 > 0:41:23His love maybe seems to get stronger, and then...

0:41:23 > 0:41:28I suppose sometimes I don't feel that way about meself, so I can't really understand why he feels like that.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31She knows I love her to bits

0:41:31 > 0:41:34and I'll do absolutely anything for her,

0:41:34 > 0:41:38and if staying in the UK's the thing that's going to make her happy

0:41:38 > 0:41:40then staying in the UK will be what we do.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45I don't mind what they vote for, but...

0:41:45 > 0:41:48I just hope they are going to make the right decision.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51The McKeowns have had a life-changing week.

0:41:51 > 0:41:56They've had to dig deep and ask huge questions they've never confronted before,

0:41:56 > 0:42:01but now the wait is over. It's time for the final vote.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04It's been a very interesting week in one way or another,

0:42:04 > 0:42:07and we're going to vote...

0:42:11 > 0:42:13..Australia!

0:42:15 > 0:42:17And I'm going to vote...

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Australia!

0:42:19 > 0:42:21SHE LAUGHS

0:42:21 > 0:42:24- What?- That's a surprise!

0:42:24 > 0:42:28No, I'm absolutely stunned, but absolutely delighted.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37I feel like I might puke.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39- LAUGHTER - Why?- I don't know.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41I don't know whether it's excitement or nervousness

0:42:41 > 0:42:46but it does feel a bit like a weight's lifted off me shoulders, and...

0:42:46 > 0:42:49yeah, we'll just have to go from here.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53It's been a life-changing journey

0:42:53 > 0:42:58and Kelley has made a brave decision for Adrian and the children.

0:42:58 > 0:43:01Let's hope it works out for them.

0:43:01 > 0:43:06I suppose at home it's easy to kind of steer towards staying at home, because you don't know any different,

0:43:06 > 0:43:10and, as much as I tried to cling onto it, I really couldn't.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13Australia was bigger than me. SHE LAUGHS
