0:00:00 > 0:00:02At some point,

0:00:02 > 0:00:06we all believe there's a better life to live somewhere else.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09But moving your family halfway around the world to find it

0:00:09 > 0:00:11takes a big leap of faith,

0:00:11 > 0:00:15especially if your partner has some serious concerns.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19The McGuinesses are desperate for a better future.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23If we can't make ends meet, what kind of upbringing will that be for the children?

0:00:23 > 0:00:26But can they agree what it is?

0:00:26 > 0:00:30My mind's made up, I want to go to Australia. This, to me, this is the dream.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Especially when one of them is far from convinced.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35We'd have to cut all of them down.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36It's just too small.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38I just wouldn't buy this house.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40- So it's a no. - It's definitely a no.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Now, they have only one week

0:00:42 > 0:00:45before they face the biggest decision of their lives.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Australia's famous laid back way of life, sunny climate

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and almost 30,000 miles of coastline

0:01:17 > 0:01:22have long made it THE favourite destination for Brits looking to move abroad.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27But life down under doesn't always deliver the paradise new arrivals may picture.

0:01:27 > 0:01:32The McGuiness family have one week to experience life in Australia.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36At the end of it they'll have to make a life-changing decision -

0:01:36 > 0:01:40whether to make the move or to stay in the UK.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46After 24 hours and having crossed three continents,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48the McGuinesses land in Brisbane.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52The sheer distance from home has dawned on Jeanette.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57- I was awake all of the flight.- The rest of us three had a sleep.- Yeah.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01SHE LAUGHS Yeah, you three slept.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03You know when you look at the in-flight map?

0:02:03 > 0:02:07You're watching that and you see how many countries you actually fly over

0:02:07 > 0:02:11and you realise just how far away it is, don't you?

0:02:12 > 0:02:15The family have their home in Liverpool.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19They are 36-year-old David, his wife, Jeanette, who's 31,

0:02:19 > 0:02:23and their children - Gabrielle, aged four, and two-year-old Sean.

0:02:23 > 0:02:2613 years ago, before he met Jeanette,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29David went on holiday to Sydney.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31He's now convinced his family's future

0:02:31 > 0:02:33lies on the other side of the world.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36I've been to Australia myself, I've seen the place,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39but Jeanette hasn't, the kids certainly haven't.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42I want them to see Australia through my eyes.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46The food's great, the lifestyle's great.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Even though I only went on a holiday,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51I got a good feeling from the country.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53However, Jeanette is reluctant to move anywhere.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Cos I'm used to Liverpool, I love Liverpool,

0:02:57 > 0:02:58it's where I was brought up.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02I get homesick if we go away for the weekend. I phone up to see what's happening at home.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06It's not just a holiday fantasy that's driving David

0:03:06 > 0:03:08to uproot his family.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11With his carpentry business struggling in the recession,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13their finances are under pressure.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Two or three years ago I was flying. I had lads working for me,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18I was earning... I was on a good wage.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Now, the last year and a half, two years,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24all my prices have gone down a third, but I've still got

0:03:24 > 0:03:29the same bills. In fact, I've got bigger bills now than I did two years ago.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33It's just no lifestyle for the children, to bring them up in.

0:03:33 > 0:03:38If we can't afford to make ends meet, what kind of upbringing is that going to be for the children?

0:03:38 > 0:03:42On top of this, they worry about increasing crime rates in the area,

0:03:42 > 0:03:44which they've both lived in since childhood.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46'It's getting worse.'

0:03:46 > 0:03:50When we were younger there was drugs and everything around,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54but they have guns now and stuff, and I don't want my kids going to areas

0:03:54 > 0:03:58where they could potentially mix with that type of people.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00With the employment situation in this country now,

0:04:00 > 0:04:03we won't be able to afford a better area than where we live.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Born and raised in Liverpool,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08they both have lots of family living nearby.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Jeanette is especially close to her mum.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16'She's with her mum every single day, I'd say.'

0:04:16 > 0:04:18If she's not with her she phones her.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22Her mum is her best friend - they do everything together.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27I really will miss me mum because it's just having that support there,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30a friend to go out with, to take the children out for the day.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33'If David's in work, phone me mum, "Want to go out for the day?"

0:04:33 > 0:04:39'David, I don't think he's realised how hard it is going to be for me,

0:04:39 > 0:04:43'not being able to see me mum and dad.'

0:04:43 > 0:04:46And the prospect of being in another country,

0:04:46 > 0:04:51so far from family and friends, is really scaring Jeanette.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I had a nightmare - well, it was a horrible dream -

0:04:54 > 0:04:56a few weeks ago, where I was on me own

0:04:56 > 0:05:01and I was pushing Sean in the pram with Gabrielle,

0:05:01 > 0:05:04and I was on this road in the middle of the city on me own.

0:05:04 > 0:05:09And I'd never walked down this road before and just the feeling,

0:05:09 > 0:05:10it was just a horrible feeling,

0:05:10 > 0:05:15just being totally alone in the world and not knowing where I was

0:05:15 > 0:05:16or who anybody was around me.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20Didn't recognise any streets, didn't recognise the road signs.

0:05:20 > 0:05:21It was horrible.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24For David, the move doesn't hold any fears.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28My mind's made up, I want to go to Australia.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31In fact, I'd go tomorrow. I'm there already.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33With so much at stake,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Jeanette is torn about the decision ahead of her.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40The main reason to go is to give the children a better life,

0:05:40 > 0:05:43or the best life we can possibly give them.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47And I don't know whether that life is in Australia

0:05:47 > 0:05:49or here, surrounded by their family

0:05:49 > 0:05:54and their loved ones who they know, giving them that security of family.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57It's just a hard decision for me to make, very hard.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59I don't know which is best.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01The McGuinesses face a decision

0:06:01 > 0:06:04that could leave one of them heartbroken.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Jeanette knows leaving the UK would be the hardest thing

0:06:07 > 0:06:11she's ever had to do, but David's convinced Australia will offer

0:06:11 > 0:06:15not just him but the whole family a better future.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22Their quest starts in the city of Gold Coast in eastern Australia.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Situated near Brisbane, Gold Coast offers all the benefits of city life

0:06:25 > 0:06:31with plenty of sandy beaches for families to enjoy the Australian lifestyle.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33And, with a thriving business community,

0:06:33 > 0:06:37there are good job opportunities for both Jeanette and David.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40However, the Gold Coast's popularity does come at a cost.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Properties prices here are amongst the highest in Australia.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Their base for the week is this three-bedroom house.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Close to the city and beaches, hopefully it should impress them.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02Wow! Look where you're staying.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- I don't like wooden ceilings. - I love wooden ceilings.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- It's nice, but...- It's my type of house, not yours.- Yeah, I know.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10HE LAUGHS

0:07:10 > 0:07:15- No, it's nice. It's lovely and clean. - Yeah.- It's just...

0:07:15 > 0:07:19It's all one level, isn't it? It is nice.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Jeanette sounds like she's being a bit polite.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Perhaps the rest of the house will get her excited.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27That's OK.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30SHE LAUGHS

0:07:30 > 0:07:32- What's in there? - The toilet.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- Is that the only toilet? - I don't know.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38It's not going well.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Maybe the outside space will win them over.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46Oh! It's got a swimming pool. I don't think it's in use, though.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- It's winter.- Yeah, I know.

0:07:48 > 0:07:49HE LAUGHS

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Come on, then.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Wow! This is nice, isn't it?

0:07:53 > 0:07:54Hey...

0:07:54 > 0:07:56And there's the barbecue.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Oh, watch these. Oh, I don't like those steps.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00HE LAUGHS

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Come on. One, two, three.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05They've got holes in.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Oh, isn't that a nice pool? Look.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Would you like a swimming pool, Gabrielle? In your own house?

0:08:13 > 0:08:14It would be nice, wouldn't it?

0:08:14 > 0:08:17The swimming pool has got everyone's vote.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20However, it's not the steps that have Jeanette worried.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Could be too many spiders hiding underneath. That's what she doesn't like.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I'm petrified of spiders...

0:08:27 > 0:08:30especially ones that can kill you.

0:08:30 > 0:08:36In my garden I haven't really got any plants because I don't like spiders,

0:08:36 > 0:08:39and plants house spiders.

0:08:39 > 0:08:40I just won't come out here.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41HE LAUGHS

0:08:41 > 0:08:44It could be a problem if she's that scared of spiders.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47I've been trying to get Jeanette in Australia for 12 years,

0:08:47 > 0:08:52and now she's here, so it can't be bad.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55As long as I just stay away from plants and trees I'll be fine.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57And everything.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01David's got just one week to persuade Jeanette their future lies here...

0:09:01 > 0:09:02spiders or not.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10Back in the UK, the McGuinesses live in a four-bedroom detached house

0:09:10 > 0:09:13in the Walton area of Liverpool.

0:09:13 > 0:09:14David and Jeanette have spent time

0:09:14 > 0:09:17and money making their house into a family home.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20They're hoping they'll be able to afford a house that fulfils

0:09:20 > 0:09:24all their needs within a budget of £200,000 in Australia.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26I don't want complete luxury,

0:09:26 > 0:09:30I don't want an American-style Cribs house

0:09:30 > 0:09:32with Jacuzzis, swimming pools.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35I'm looking for the type of house that I've got -

0:09:35 > 0:09:39detached, three bedrooms at least,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42a nice garden so that the kids can run around,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45and in a nice, safe, secure area.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49My dream house, ideally, if we could afford it in Australia,

0:09:49 > 0:09:55would be a two-storey house with four bedrooms, front and back garden,

0:09:55 > 0:10:00enclosed back garden, with a playroom downstairs.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04If David is to persuade Jeanette to move to Australia,

0:10:04 > 0:10:07finding the right house will be crucial.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12They'd love a home with wide open spaces in a family-friendly area,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14but can their wallet keep up with their dreams?

0:10:14 > 0:10:18We're giving the McGuinesses a taste of the property market.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19We'll show them three houses

0:10:19 > 0:10:22based on what they want from their ideal home,

0:10:22 > 0:10:25what they can afford, and the real price of property down under.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28After seeing what's on offer,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31we'll reveal to them how much each house costs.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34First up is Biggera Waters,

0:10:34 > 0:10:36just five miles north from the centre of Gold Coast.

0:10:36 > 0:10:41This is a quiet area, popular with families.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Property one is a modern three-bedroom townhouse set in a residential complex.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48This means access to a shared swimming pool and tennis courts.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51But does the resort-style setting make it more appealing?

0:10:51 > 0:10:53It seems safe enough.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57I saw neighbourhood watch signs as I came in, which makes me think,

0:10:57 > 0:11:02"Well, is there a lot of crime round here?" Don't know.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Hopefully the house will impress more.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07- Living room, dining area. - It's too small.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09It reminds me of a compact flat.

0:11:09 > 0:11:14Yeah, it just reminds me of holiday accommodation.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17I guess Jeanette doesn't mean a dream holiday by that!

0:11:17 > 0:11:21- Garden's big enough. - It's a shared garden.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- Does that go onto the road?- Yeah.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28- That's dangerous, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31So you've got no private area in the back.

0:11:31 > 0:11:36Is David's chance of persuading Jeanette already slipping away

0:11:36 > 0:11:40- with this house? - Like it, then?- It's just too small.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43The upstairs is the last chance to win her over.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45No, it's nice, it's a nice size.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- Do you think we can fit a double bed in here?- Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51"Nice size, can you fit a double bed in here?"

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Yeah, and you'll fit a double bed in this one as well.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56It's sounding more positive,

0:11:56 > 0:11:58although the layout has them puzzled.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00So, what, has it got a bad architect here? Two doors.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02That's what it's for.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- You close the bedroom door. - And it's an en-suite.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08THEY LAUGH

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Then someone else can get in from that side anyway.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13The upstairs has certainly given them a laugh,

0:12:13 > 0:12:16but has it convinced them about the rest of the house?

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- I wouldn't leave our house in the UK to come to this house.- No.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22If this house was in the UK I definitely wouldn't buy it.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26It's just two small for a family of four,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29especially with all their toys, isn't it?

0:12:29 > 0:12:33So the McGuinesses haven't been impressed by the size of this house

0:12:33 > 0:12:38or the garden. Will the price make them think otherwise?

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Come on, then, let's have a look.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48- 155,000. - Same as our house was in the UK.

0:12:48 > 0:12:49Yeah.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59It does worry us a bit as to what...

0:12:59 > 0:13:03whether we could make a life out here, the lifestyle that we want.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06We definitely want a bigger house.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08And we're not going to get it...

0:13:08 > 0:13:11- ..at these prices. - We'd have to have two jobs.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16That's a huge blow.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18If they're not going to be impressed by the properties

0:13:18 > 0:13:23they can afford, David's dream of moving could be in trouble already.

0:13:24 > 0:13:29Hopefully property two can make a better case for living in Australia.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31It's situated in the Nerang area.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35It's a popular neighbourhood, close to the countryside

0:13:35 > 0:13:38but not too far from the all-important beaches.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41This house should offer the McGuinesses

0:13:41 > 0:13:42the peace and quiet they want.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44But will they actually like it?

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Wow! Nicer than the last one.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Yeah. It is, it's bigger.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52I think the views are fantastic. Lovely views.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54I could see me sitting here.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58- Bouncy!- Don't jump on the beds.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- This is a nice bedroom.- En-suite. - That's a bonus, isn't it?

0:14:04 > 0:14:08It's a good start, but Jeanette has found a downside.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- I don't like the kitchen. - Why don't you like the kitchen?

0:14:11 > 0:14:14It's very basic. Obviously, you'd have to put a new kitchen in here

0:14:14 > 0:14:16if you bought this house.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20- Would you block it off?- No, cos then it would feel too cramped in here.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24But I could take this wall off. It would be a lot bigger kitchen.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27I don't know whether... It's just the layout. I don't know what it is,

0:14:27 > 0:14:33- I can't put me finger on it.- Is it because it's separate? Do you need this blocking off, the doorway?

0:14:33 > 0:14:35- I wouldn't buy this house. - Why wouldn't you buy it?

0:14:35 > 0:14:39What's wrong with this house? It's better than the last one.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41David's trying really hard to convince Jeanette.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45However, with so many Australian homes being open plan,

0:14:45 > 0:14:49her dislike of this layout could be a big problem.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Go on, kids, push her out!

0:14:55 > 0:14:57There's just nothing.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58You can climb up the rockery.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02- And then jump off?- There's a nice little decking area along the top.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05See that? He would do that, he would climb up there and try to jump off.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09I need somewhere with outdoor space so the kids can run their energies off.

0:15:09 > 0:15:10I don't particularly want a pool.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13If you want to go swimming you can go out to a swimming pool,

0:15:13 > 0:15:14you don't NEED a pool.

0:15:14 > 0:15:19But you do need a bit of outdoor space for them to run round in.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21If the garden is mainly for the children,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24what does Gabrielle think of it?

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Hmm. That's a no, then.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Time to find out the price.

0:15:30 > 0:15:31The good sized rooms and views

0:15:31 > 0:15:35seemed to get the thumbs up from Jeanette.

0:15:35 > 0:15:36But the garden changed all that.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Will the price convince them to consider this house

0:15:39 > 0:15:41or will it be out of reach?

0:15:44 > 0:15:49- £217,000.- You can get a lot of house back in the UK for 217,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52but that's what you're paying in Australia.

0:15:52 > 0:15:57It's over our budget, though. So this is not what we want

0:15:57 > 0:15:59and this is even over our budget.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I'm not really surprised because I have done a lot of research

0:16:02 > 0:16:05on the market in Australia before we came over,

0:16:05 > 0:16:07so I do know things are expensive,

0:16:07 > 0:16:10but it's well over what our house is worth.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13This house was a disappointment, lacking the garden space

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Jeanette craves for the children.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19And even if she liked the house, it might be above their budget.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Everything now hinges on the final property.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28Tweed Heads is 16 miles south of Gold Coast.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31Close to some of the country's best surf beaches,

0:16:31 > 0:16:34it's a good place to live the Australian lifestyle.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36You get more for your money

0:16:36 > 0:16:40but it does mean a long commute to work in Brisbane.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42The third house is a five-bedroom home.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45With Gabrielle and Sean being looked after by a childminder,

0:16:45 > 0:16:49David and Jeanette can have a good look around the house.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- Bit dark, isn't it? - It's dark but it's nice.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- It's cosy, isn't it?- Cosy, yeah.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02- This is the nicest kitchen. - Yeah, it is.

0:17:02 > 0:17:08That's nice, and you can fit a table and chairs there. No problem.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Bedroom.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- It's a double bed, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15And a Liverpool top.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19- Well, this is bigger.- Double bedroom.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24- Nice views. - That is lovely views, isn't it?

0:17:24 > 0:17:26It's a promising start.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29And there's still the garden and swimming pool to check out.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Hello!

0:17:34 > 0:17:38- Look at the pool.- Nice decking area, barbecue, lovely views.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42- Dive into the pool.- Yeah(!)

0:17:42 > 0:17:46It's going well but Jeanette has spotted some major problems.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48- It's just not child-friendly whatsoever.- No.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52You'd have to cut all them down, all those trees.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55We couldn't even consider buying a house like this.

0:17:55 > 0:17:56It's not child-friendly at all.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58- It's not very well built. - God, that's awful!

0:17:58 > 0:18:00HE LAUGHS

0:18:00 > 0:18:02He's insured. Kick him off.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05The gym and rooms downstairs would give Jeanette

0:18:05 > 0:18:07the two-storey house she wants.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09- How do you get down to that bit? - Walk down, downstairs.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12- Under all those trees?- Yeah.- No. - You coming?- I'll stay up here.

0:18:12 > 0:18:17- I'm not going down cos there'll be loads of spiders.- Look at all the spiders everywhere.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20You know what? I'm going in.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21HE LAUGHS

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Burn the house.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Yeah, there's more rooms downstairs.

0:18:25 > 0:18:30- Jeanette...- And you've got to go to them down an outdoor stairs?- Yeah.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Look. Just watch out for the spiders.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37You know what? I don't even want to see it.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39THEY LAUGH

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Oh, they're everywhere!

0:18:49 > 0:18:52This is lovely. This could be another little living area

0:18:52 > 0:18:54or a bedroom.

0:18:54 > 0:18:55- Look.- David, put it back!

0:18:55 > 0:18:57HE LAUGHS

0:18:57 > 0:19:01Get lost. Get away from me now, get away from me. Go away.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03And David's joking around isn't really going to help

0:19:03 > 0:19:05change her mind.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09This house would give them all the room they need.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14However, the state of the downstairs has got Jeanette wanting out.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18This would be like my bush tucker trial, staying in this house.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- Shall we stay for the night?- No! - I love it, I want to buy it.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25- I could live here with the lads. - I couldn't even say that I could

0:19:25 > 0:19:28do this house up and live in it, cos I just couldn't.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30- So it's a no, then? - It's definitely a no.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34Come on, let's get out of here.

0:19:34 > 0:19:35SHE LAUGHS

0:19:35 > 0:19:37Oh! Something's just touched me.

0:19:37 > 0:19:38HE LAUGHS

0:19:38 > 0:19:41After another promising start,

0:19:41 > 0:19:44this house hasn't gone down well with Jeanette.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Can the price turn things around if it's within their budget?

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Go on, let's see how much it is.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Let's see how much we're spending.

0:19:56 > 0:19:57HE LAUGHS

0:19:57 > 0:19:59- 223?- Is that all?

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- So we're definitely not moving to Australia, then.- Why?

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Cos we can't afford nothing.

0:20:04 > 0:20:05HE SIGHS

0:20:05 > 0:20:09- We can't afford anything that you'd...- Yeah, but there's other houses.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11You've seen some on the internet.

0:20:11 > 0:20:16It seems house prices have really blown away Jeanette's hopes of finding a dream home.

0:20:16 > 0:20:21When we first got here and everyone was dead friendly, I was thinking, "Oh, I like it here."

0:20:21 > 0:20:25- I went to the beach. I don't like beaches, but I love that one. - Got to love beach.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- And I thought, "I do like it." And the kids were made up. - You'd love the weather.- Yeah.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31And then I was actually going more for Australia

0:20:31 > 0:20:34and then this has just totally put me right off.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36It really has, it's totally put me off.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Every house is going to be different. We've only seen a couple.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43You have to admire David's positive approach

0:20:43 > 0:20:46but he's just not convincing Jeanette.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Although property one was well within their budget,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54it just wasn't big enough for their needs.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57The second house had room inside but the rather odd garden

0:20:57 > 0:21:01didn't offer Jeanette the outdoor space she wants.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06And the third seemed perfect on paper, but it would stretch their budget to its limit.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08So have Australian houses won them over

0:21:08 > 0:21:11or will they vote for the UK instead?

0:21:11 > 0:21:14Compared to the houses in the UK

0:21:14 > 0:21:18and what you can get over there for the same price,

0:21:18 > 0:21:21my vote goes to...

0:21:21 > 0:21:23- ..UK. - And my vote goes to...

0:21:23 > 0:21:25..Australia.

0:21:26 > 0:21:31David's remaining upbeat, but even he would have to agree

0:21:31 > 0:21:34that the house they want might be out of their reach.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38It only depends on whether we can earn more money out here,

0:21:38 > 0:21:40put our budget up to afford a better property.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43If we couldn't earn more money and that's our budget, full stop,

0:21:43 > 0:21:46if that's the three houses we've seen today, we wouldn't be able

0:21:46 > 0:21:50to bring the kids up in them, so it's all based on what we could earn.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57Jeanette's disappointment with Australian homes

0:21:57 > 0:22:01firmly put the brakes on David's dream move.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03But with any future being an expensive one,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07it's vital David and Jeanette find good work prospects.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13Back in England, David has his own carpentry and joinery business

0:22:13 > 0:22:16and Jeanette works part-time in pay-roll.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18A shortage of building work across the UK

0:22:18 > 0:22:22has pushed his business to the brink.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25Work has dried out a lot in the last year, two years.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Everyone's struggling to get on a job.

0:22:27 > 0:22:32Two years ago I had five to eight lads working for me,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35now I'm struggling to find work on me own.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37With no real opportunities on the horizon,

0:22:37 > 0:22:41David is hoping that his skills will be in demand down under.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45It's a job that I love. I do love it, I wish I was in constant work.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48But there isn't the work to cover what I want to do in the UK.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Hopefully there will be in Australia.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51WHIRRS DRILL

0:22:51 > 0:22:54We've arranged for him to spend a day

0:22:54 > 0:22:56working on a Gold Coast building site.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00Everything hinges on his work prospects.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04The object for me is to get loads of work, continuous work.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07I don't want to have to worry about where the next job is.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Hopefully there's plenty of it about.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12This is supposed to be one of the biggest builders,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14hopefully I'll get contacts while I'm here.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18This is David's chance to show what he's made of,

0:23:18 > 0:23:20and they've thrown him straight in at the deep end.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23- I'll get you to hold the level. - Brilliant, thank you.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26- We don't use levels in the UK, we guess.- Oh, do you?

0:23:26 > 0:23:27HE LAUGHS

0:23:27 > 0:23:30- We do it properly over here, mate. - Oh, here we go!

0:23:30 > 0:23:31THEY LAUGH

0:23:31 > 0:23:34- It's nice and muddy like home, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36- No, normally it's about that deep in water.- Yeah, true.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40- Normally I have wellies and waterproofs. - This is all right, isn't it?

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Well, I don't think David is going to struggle to fit in

0:23:43 > 0:23:45with the Aussie banter!

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Back in the UK, Jeanette earns just over £13,000 a year

0:23:50 > 0:23:52working part-time in a pay-roll office.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55After her disappointment with Gold Coast property,

0:23:55 > 0:24:00her job prospects could make all the difference for their lifestyle.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04We would be primarily dependent on David's salary,

0:24:04 > 0:24:06but if I could work part-time also,

0:24:06 > 0:24:09it might give us a better lifestyle for the children

0:24:09 > 0:24:12and we'd be able to buy a house in a better area.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15So we've sent Jeanette to a recruitment agency

0:24:15 > 0:24:18where she has one very important question.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Is there work available?

0:24:20 > 0:24:23Yes, there is, particularly if you want to temp first.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25And I think, with the skills that you've got,

0:24:25 > 0:24:27and particularly having a degree,

0:24:27 > 0:24:31I don't see that you'd have an issue getting work.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35I'd sign you up, that's for sure.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37- Well, that's positive.- Yes, it is.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39That's a promising start for Jeanette.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42And back at the building site, David's getting the low-down

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- from the site manager. - Is there plenty of work?

0:24:45 > 0:24:47Plenty of work, mate.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49The Gold Coast is a little bit quiet at the moment,

0:24:49 > 0:24:53but in the region in general, within driving distance,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55there's plenty of work.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58That's exactly what David had hoped to hear.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01But what about the most important question?

0:25:01 > 0:25:05What is the salary for a carpenter and joiner in Australia?

0:25:05 > 0:25:07Depending on the site that you're on,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09and also the hours you'd be doing,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12you could be earning, as a starting point,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15anywhere between 85,000 to potentially a hundred grand.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Australian dollars, obviously.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21That's a £60,000 starting salary,

0:25:21 > 0:25:24far more than David's earned in recent years.

0:25:24 > 0:25:31- But what about Jeanette's pay? - Have you got any idea of what your salary expectations are?

0:25:31 > 0:25:36At home, my job's worth 24,000 full-time,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39so pro rata, that's over three days. That's in pounds.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42I think that you would be very happy.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45I would say the minimum you would be looking at would be

0:25:45 > 0:25:5145,000 upwards. And it can be well upwards from that.

0:25:51 > 0:25:55£30,000 is much better than the salary Jeanette earns in the UK

0:25:55 > 0:25:59but is it enough to make her consider moving here?

0:25:59 > 0:26:03The fact that there's employment available is fantastic.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06And the wages are good as well, aren't they?

0:26:06 > 0:26:10It will break even, but that means that I could come out here

0:26:10 > 0:26:15and afford the lifestyle that I wanted, so it is fantastic news.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17That's quite a turnaround for Jeanette.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21With David's first working day coming to an end,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24have they been swayed by the idea of work in Australia?

0:26:24 > 0:26:25Which way will they vote?

0:26:25 > 0:26:30May experience today was very positive and I'm going to vote...

0:26:33 > 0:26:34..Australia.

0:26:34 > 0:26:39With regard to employment here in Australia,

0:26:39 > 0:26:41my vote goes to...

0:26:42 > 0:26:44..Australia.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48SHE LAUGHS

0:26:48 > 0:26:51That's a massive boost for David.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54It seems his dream of moving down under is one step closer

0:26:54 > 0:26:56to becoming a reality.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04Hiya.

0:27:04 > 0:27:08When the family meet at the house and catch up on their day,

0:27:08 > 0:27:12Jeanette is quick to spot one difference their combined salary could make.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16Obviously, we wouldn't have to live in any of the houses we saw yesterday.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17HE LAUGHS

0:27:17 > 0:27:20So that's a bonus.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23So, yeah, that's positive, isn't it?

0:27:26 > 0:27:29Jeanette's vote for Oz saved David's hopes of a move

0:27:29 > 0:27:32from a very swift end.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36But they've still to tackle the biggest reason for coming to Australia -

0:27:36 > 0:27:37the children's wellbeing.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40They both worry what a future in the UK would mean

0:27:40 > 0:27:42for Gabrielle and Sean.

0:27:42 > 0:27:47I don't think I could keep my kids from the drinking culture

0:27:47 > 0:27:48that we have in this country.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51Everyone loves to drink, everyone drinks.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54I just want to bring them up in a better area.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57I grew up here. There was nothing wrong with it, I know,

0:27:57 > 0:27:59but I know what you can get up to round here.

0:27:59 > 0:28:03Hopefully, the culture in Australia might be a lot more family-orientated

0:28:03 > 0:28:06and there might be a lot more for the children to do.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12David believes that Australia would be a better place to raise a family,

0:28:12 > 0:28:15but he needs to convince Jeanette.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20So he's taking the family to meet Pam, a distant relative who lives

0:28:20 > 0:28:23deep in the countryside outside Brisbane.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26He's hoping some inside knowledge will help seal the deal.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29- G'day. You must be David.- I'm David and this is Sean.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31- G'day, Sean. How are you? - Nice to meet you.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33Tell you what, I can see the Carney in you.

0:28:33 > 0:28:35- You can see the Carney in me? - I can.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39- I thought I was a McGuiness.- No, I can see similarities for sure.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43- Hiya.- This is Jeanette. - Hello, Jeanette. How are you?

0:28:43 > 0:28:46- That's Gabrielle.- Hello, Gabrielle.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49- We brought some treats for you. - Oh, thank you, sweetheart.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52That's lovely.

0:28:52 > 0:28:57They're also joined by Pam's friend, Liz.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00And Jeanette wastes no time beating about the bush.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Can I just ask you about crime rates?

0:29:02 > 0:29:05What's the crime like round here?

0:29:05 > 0:29:08Not coming from here, I need to know about what...

0:29:08 > 0:29:11I could come here and move to a really bad area, not knowing

0:29:11 > 0:29:15- whether it's a nice area or not. - There is a crime problem at the moment on the Gold Coast,

0:29:15 > 0:29:20- but it's more break and enters to shops, it's petty crime.- Right.

0:29:20 > 0:29:26I think a little bit has to do with a bit of unemployment, a bit of drug use.

0:29:26 > 0:29:30But as far as the residential area, I wouldn't say we've got a crime problem.

0:29:30 > 0:29:34We can sleep at night with our windows wide open.

0:29:34 > 0:29:38Yeah, but you wouldn't leave your windows open because of the spiders.

0:29:38 > 0:29:39You've got screens.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Joking aside, with her worries about crime in the UK,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44it's reassuring for Jeanette.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48And then it's time for her to be put on the spot.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50So do you think, after being here,

0:29:50 > 0:29:53that you would like to come and live in Australia?

0:29:53 > 0:29:58I'm just not sure at all. It's just the thought of leaving family and friends.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Yes, I can appreciate that.

0:30:00 > 0:30:05Is coming to Australia and having an outdoor lifestyle

0:30:05 > 0:30:09- more important for the children, or is being at home with the family more important?- Yes.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11I've got to weigh that up.

0:30:12 > 0:30:17However, the taste of country life has had a very different effect on David.

0:30:17 > 0:30:21I think today has probably been one of the best days so far.

0:30:21 > 0:30:26If I can earn a lot more money, Jeanette gets a good job,

0:30:26 > 0:30:30I don't see why we couldn't afford something like this in Australia.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33This to me, this is the dream.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36But he has to convince Jeanette,

0:30:36 > 0:30:39otherwise David's plan for his family could remain just a dream.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46Once again, the emotional pull of family has Jeanette

0:30:46 > 0:30:48concerned about a move to Oz,

0:30:48 > 0:30:51but could a taste of the Aussie lifestyle David dreams of

0:30:51 > 0:30:54help put things in perspective?

0:30:54 > 0:30:59To get a flavour of what Australia can offer, they're going to

0:30:59 > 0:31:04a huge agricultural show in Brisbane that goes on for ten days.

0:31:04 > 0:31:08It's not the sort of thing they've experienced before.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11Wave to the ice cream man.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16Look at those hats. Do you want a proper Australian hat?

0:31:16 > 0:31:19That's the best rainbow I've ever seen.

0:31:20 > 0:31:24Wow, look at all these animals, kids.

0:31:24 > 0:31:25How cute are they?

0:31:27 > 0:31:30Look at them two.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33Here we go. Isn't this fantastic?

0:31:33 > 0:31:37Gabrielle seems to love this, although I'm not so sure about little Sean.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40DAD LAUGHS

0:31:40 > 0:31:42SEAN CRIES

0:31:42 > 0:31:46Sean looks a bit scared, but the kids are enjoying themselves.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50Aw, Look at this white one, he likes you.

0:31:50 > 0:31:53He's got to get used to it, hasn't he?

0:31:53 > 0:31:57We've never done anything like this before.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01We normally go and see animals, but they're always behind fences,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03they're never allowed to mingle in like this.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06We've never found places where you can do that.

0:32:06 > 0:32:10They're having a ball, they're loving this. It's a brilliant experience for them.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14It's not just the show that's impressed them with what Australia can offer.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17It's very child friendly, Australia, it is.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21Even driving down like an A road,

0:32:21 > 0:32:26there are parks on every corner, there are play areas, swings and slides.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30There's one there and within a 30-second walk there's another one, 30 seconds another one.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33Fantastic for the children.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34SHEEP BAAS

0:32:34 > 0:32:38Jeanette's realising that there's plenty for young children to do,

0:32:38 > 0:32:41so she's coming round to the idea.

0:32:41 > 0:32:43I knew my plan would work.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45Don't get ahead of yourself, David.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53It seems like it's been a great day out,

0:32:53 > 0:32:57but there's one thing playing on Jeanette's mind.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00It would be different living here full-time than just seeing it for a week.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04The kids not having their nans and grand-dads around them

0:33:04 > 0:33:06and the cousins and stuff.

0:33:06 > 0:33:10There are plus sides and downsides to all of it.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13I've got a lot of thinking to do.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17After their day out, which way will they vote on lifestyle?

0:33:17 > 0:33:19UK or Australia?

0:33:19 > 0:33:24We've had a lovely day out here today. The children have had a ball.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27Feeding the animals and we're going to vote...

0:33:28 > 0:33:33- One, two, three, Oz, Oz, Australia. - I say the same.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39Three Australia, one undecided. Australia.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42If you get the nice weather in the UK,

0:33:42 > 0:33:46you can have a nice family day out as well as you can here, so...

0:33:47 > 0:33:50After a taste of the Australian lifestyle

0:33:50 > 0:33:54Jeanette is still not won over.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02David and the children may have fallen for the Aussie lifestyle,

0:34:02 > 0:34:05but Jeanette's worries only made her decision harder.

0:34:05 > 0:34:09Finding out the real cost of the move could be the deciding factor.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13Jeannette and David bought their house for £155,000

0:34:13 > 0:34:16and have put in £20,000 fixing it up.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19Will they be able to get back all the money they've spent?

0:34:19 > 0:34:24We sent round two estate agents to get its current sale and rental value.

0:34:24 > 0:34:25Here we go.

0:34:27 > 0:34:29There's our house.

0:34:29 > 0:34:31DOOR SQUEAKS

0:34:31 > 0:34:34Neutral colours.

0:34:34 > 0:34:37Cute kid.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40Cute kid! He doesn't know him.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42I like the fireplace, it's nice and modern.

0:34:42 > 0:34:45I think whoever lives here has got an eye for taste and colour.

0:34:45 > 0:34:48I picked the fabric.

0:34:53 > 0:34:58Really nicely presented, good quality kitchen, absolutely ideal.

0:34:58 > 0:35:03There you go. He said good quality kitchen. The real oak kitchen.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05- My bed.- That's your bedroom

0:35:05 > 0:35:08It's a nice, warm, welcoming room for any child.

0:35:08 > 0:35:13It's an ideal environment for a child, but it's never going to be this clean with a child in it.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15It is!

0:35:17 > 0:35:18It's a nice property.

0:35:18 > 0:35:23To sell the property in the current market I would value it at:

0:35:23 > 0:35:25That's more than what I expected.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28To achieve maximum rental income I would value it for rental purposes

0:35:28 > 0:35:31at 595 per calendar month.

0:35:33 > 0:35:40In the current market we would place it on to the market at:

0:35:40 > 0:35:44With a view to achieving between 140 and 145,000.

0:35:44 > 0:35:50For the rental market it should achieve somewhere between 675

0:35:50 > 0:35:52and £725 per calendar month.

0:35:52 > 0:35:53I'm going with him.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59That's a lot less than the £175,000 they'd hoped for,

0:35:59 > 0:36:02but they're keeping a positive front.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04I know we paid, what, 155,

0:36:04 > 0:36:07but I thought the market had appreciated that much.

0:36:07 > 0:36:08I'm surprised for the better, yeah.

0:36:08 > 0:36:12Based on these valuations, their house is in negative equity,

0:36:12 > 0:36:17meaning the McGuinnesses would rent out it out rather than sell, for the moment.

0:36:18 > 0:36:24However, what they can earn from their house is only part of their money considerations.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27So we've prepared a breakdown of their cost of living

0:36:27 > 0:36:30in Australia to see if the sums will add up.

0:36:30 > 0:36:35£372 for petrol here, £190 car insurance.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38I thought fuel was supposed to be cheaper over here?

0:36:38 > 0:36:40Mortgage repayments...

0:36:40 > 0:36:42That's a bit different.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45OK, let's do the others then.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48So, yeah, total combined...

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Shall we see the difference between them two?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54The difference between that one...

0:36:56 > 0:37:00- It's about the same.- Is it?- Yeah.

0:37:00 > 0:37:05It actually... £20. It's £20 difference between our monthly bills

0:37:05 > 0:37:10at home and the salaries we can earn. It's just the same!

0:37:10 > 0:37:14- We're £20 better off in Australia? - We're £20 better off in Australia.

0:37:14 > 0:37:15Let's go to Australia!

0:37:15 > 0:37:17Hmm.

0:37:17 > 0:37:21£20 better off may not sound like a lot money,

0:37:21 > 0:37:23but is it enough to make a difference

0:37:23 > 0:37:26when it could mean a whole new lifestyle for The McGuinnesses?

0:37:26 > 0:37:31Will they vote with their hearts or with their wallets?

0:37:31 > 0:37:34House prices are a lot more expensive...

0:37:34 > 0:37:38Wages, it seems here you can get a lot more.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42We are going to vote for...

0:37:42 > 0:37:43Australia!

0:37:44 > 0:37:46- That's a shock.- I know.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50- Why?- Cos I know how important it is to you.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54There's more opportunities, yeah. I could earn more money.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Seeing things in black and white

0:37:59 > 0:38:02has helped push Jeanette towards Australia.

0:38:02 > 0:38:08But her biggest concern has always been leaving behind a close network of friends and family.

0:38:08 > 0:38:12So could seeing messages from them be another step back?

0:38:14 > 0:38:18We've prepared some messages from family and friends back in the UK.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20As it can be upsetting,

0:38:20 > 0:38:24David and Jeanette felt they'd rather the children didn't watch it.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27- You ready?- Mmm.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33Hello, Jeanette and David and Gabrielle and Sean.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36We're missing you, hoping you're having a good time in Australia.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39I couldn't fault David. He looks after his family,

0:38:39 > 0:38:40he's a good family man,

0:38:40 > 0:38:43he only wants what's best for his children.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47I'm not sure how they'd settle in to the Australian way of life.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50David I think would settle in a lot easier than Jeanette,

0:38:50 > 0:38:52she's very homely.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56David's decision will be based on Jeanette,

0:38:56 > 0:38:59because he loves Jeanette so much.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01So I know for a fact Dave wants to go, but if Jeanette really,

0:39:01 > 0:39:06truly doesn't want to go, then David will back Jeanette up.

0:39:06 > 0:39:10It would be very difficult being detached from them.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Especially around birthdays, Christmas.

0:39:13 > 0:39:17I think the difficult part would be not having the children

0:39:17 > 0:39:21being around each other, and growing up together.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24My wife is very caring,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27and she loves the bones of the grandchildren,

0:39:27 > 0:39:28as all grandmothers do.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31She's had a lot to do with the grandchildren.

0:39:31 > 0:39:32Because of all this,

0:39:32 > 0:39:39it's too upsetting for my wife to speak about it.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42Oh, I love them kids.

0:39:43 > 0:39:44Just the thought of...

0:39:47 > 0:39:50..not seeing them every week, just taking them out,

0:39:50 > 0:39:54spending some time with them, is going to be so hard.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57I'm going to miss them so much.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00But I am behind what decisions they make.

0:40:00 > 0:40:03We want to say that

0:40:03 > 0:40:07if you decide you're going to make a new life in Australia,

0:40:07 > 0:40:12then we'll always be there for you, and we'll always be behind you.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15But also, we would...

0:40:16 > 0:40:20..terribly miss you all if you go, and we'll miss seeing Gabrielle

0:40:20 > 0:40:23and Sean growing up and being there at the special times.

0:40:23 > 0:40:28If that's what you decide to do, then we'll be there for you,

0:40:28 > 0:40:33but our heart says we'd rather you were here with us.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38That's upsetting.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42When people say they're going to miss the children growing up and stuff.

0:40:42 > 0:40:47Jeanette got upset seeing her mum and dad walking away from the airport when we were coming to Australia.

0:40:47 > 0:40:51If she was getting upset at that, imagine getting upset

0:40:51 > 0:40:54if she's leaving them for a couple of years.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57It's just a load of factors you've got to consider.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02As their trial week in Australia comes to an end,

0:41:02 > 0:41:04it's thrown up a lot to think about.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08House prices came as a shock,

0:41:08 > 0:41:12and Jeanette's phobias were proving to be a problem.

0:41:12 > 0:41:16However, job and salary prospects were exactly what they wanted to hear.

0:41:16 > 0:41:20Now, after a week of highs and lows,

0:41:20 > 0:41:23the McGuinnesses' future rests on a knife-edge.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25This'd be the biggest decision me and Jeanette would make,

0:41:25 > 0:41:29coming to the other side of the world, leaving everything we know.

0:41:29 > 0:41:34Before we came to Australia, I was 100% sure that Australia was

0:41:34 > 0:41:35the perfect place for us.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38During the week, I've had my ups and downs,

0:41:38 > 0:41:41but I think the goods have outweighed the bads.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44You only get one life.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46I have not got a clue how I'm going to vote.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49There's pluses and minuses to all of them.

0:41:49 > 0:41:53So I really do not know. There's opportunities...

0:41:53 > 0:41:57That's the main thing - it's money and opportunities out here,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00and family back home, and no opportunities.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03It's time to decide.

0:42:03 > 0:42:08Has David done enough to convince Jeanette their future lies in Australia?

0:42:08 > 0:42:10After spending the last week in Australia

0:42:10 > 0:42:14looking at lifestyle, employment opportunities

0:42:14 > 0:42:16and Australian life in general,

0:42:16 > 0:42:17We're going to vote...

0:42:22 > 0:42:25ALL: ..Australia!

0:42:25 > 0:42:26Yay!

0:42:26 > 0:42:31I have come to the conclusion that there are more opportunities here

0:42:31 > 0:42:34than back in the UK. I will miss family and friends,

0:42:34 > 0:42:36but I'll give it a go and see.

0:42:36 > 0:42:40It doesn't mean forever.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43- Cos I love you so much, babe. - Yeah, whatever!

0:42:43 > 0:42:46After some real soul searching,

0:42:46 > 0:42:50Jeanette has finally made her call and chosen a future in Australia -

0:42:50 > 0:42:52much to David's delight!

0:42:52 > 0:42:55With a tough choice behind them, the McGuinnesses can begin

0:42:55 > 0:42:58the next chapter of their lives down under.
