0:00:02 > 0:00:05At some point we all wonder if a better life might be out there,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08just waiting for us to discover it.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11But the reality of moving half way around the world to find it

0:00:11 > 0:00:13takes a huge leap of faith,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15and for one UK family,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19that could mean giving up everything and everyone they love.

0:00:19 > 0:00:24For almost ten years, Jane Day has dreamt of moving to Australia.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26I just fell in love with it.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29It was just a lovely, relaxed environment.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34But convincing her family to share that dream is no easy matter.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I guess I'm just a bit hesitant about changing from, you know,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41what we have here to something that's a bit more unknown over there.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43And after a week to remember...

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Doesn't matter how much it was, I wouldn't buy the house.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Simon, that's a really big difference.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51How will the Days make the decision of a lifetime?

0:00:51 > 0:00:54It's like when you do a skydive or something.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Why does anyone jump out of a plane?

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Because you can, and you just want to try it.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01It's one of those things, really.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28More than a quarter of Australia's population was born overseas.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32For thousands of families arriving every year, it's a chance to make

0:01:32 > 0:01:35a lifelong dream come true,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38surrounded by sun, sand and wide-open spaces.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43But many end up becoming ping-pong Poms, bouncing down to Australia,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45and rebounding all the way back home again.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48For the Day family,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52the week ahead could be the most important of their lives.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54After experiencing the reality of living in Australia,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56they'll face a huge decision.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Whether to stay in the UK,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01or to make the move down under a permanent one.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06After 12,000 miles and 24 hours in the air,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09the Days arrive in Melbourne.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13After such a marathon journey,

0:02:13 > 0:02:17they're excited to be back in a country they've visited before.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20It'll be interesting to see how things have changed,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and provide us with information to help make a decision.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Also, a little bit apprehensive that at the end of it

0:02:25 > 0:02:28I might not have convinced the family.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30But we will see.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31I don't really want to move,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34but I think it'll be kind of good see to what it's like,

0:02:34 > 0:02:35then I can see how it really is,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38rather than what I think it might be.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40I have no idea what we're doing.

0:02:42 > 0:02:47It looks like jet lag may have already claimed one family member.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Fortunately dad's doing the navigating to their home for a week,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54just a short drive from the airport.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Back in the UK, the Days live in Harpenden, in Hertfordshire.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04They are - Simon, a commercial manager.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Jane, a business studies teacher,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08and their three children.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Felicity, a 22-year-old student,

0:03:10 > 0:03:1214-year-old Harry,

0:03:12 > 0:03:13and nine-year-old Eleanor.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Moving down under has been on Jane's mind ever since

0:03:18 > 0:03:22she first set foot in Australia, almost a decade ago.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- Originally we went to Australia eight years ago.- 2003.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31That was because Simon's sister was out there.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33I just fell in love with it.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37It was just a lovely, relaxed environment.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39It's kind of progressed from there.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Jane may be smitten with life down under,

0:03:42 > 0:03:46but for Simon, emigrating is a far less romantic prospect.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49We're very well established here, we have a good circle of friends,

0:03:49 > 0:03:52the kids are in good schools, it's very convenient.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57We're in a nice location, so there's lots of things in that mix.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02With family also living close by, leaving would be even harder.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05I guess I'm just a bit hesitant about changing from,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07you know, what we've got here,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10to something that's a bit more of an unknown over there.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16Felicity's also keen on a move when she finishes university,

0:04:16 > 0:04:20although her studies mean she'll have to sit out this current trip.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26Without an ally onboard, it's up to Jane to convince Simon

0:04:26 > 0:04:30that emigrating is worth giving up everything they have at home.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33I just think life's for the taking, life's for the living.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36Don't sit back and wait for it to happen,

0:04:36 > 0:04:39you have to go out and make things happen.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Keeping Simon happy is important to Jane,

0:04:44 > 0:04:46but she feels now's the time to decide

0:04:46 > 0:04:50once and for all where the family's future lies.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52This year could be a good year to do it.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Felicity is about to finish her degree.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Harry's not yet started GCSE,

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Eleanor is still in primary school,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02so there is this opportunity,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and I don't want to wait another five years

0:05:05 > 0:05:09of other break points to do it.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10But with time running out,

0:05:10 > 0:05:15Simon is not the only member of the family who needs persuading to leave.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- Going to Melbourne, so - there. - There.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19I don't really want to move,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22because I don't think it's worth giving my friends up,

0:05:22 > 0:05:24just to move to Australia,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27and have potentially, maybe, the same lifestyle as we do here,

0:05:27 > 0:05:33and also, I think I'd miss my family over here, too.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Like my grandma and grandad. I'm really close with them.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39When my mum first started talking about it with me,

0:05:39 > 0:05:41I really wanted to go there.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44But now I'm feeling like I don't want to,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46but I don't know if I want to or not.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Because I wouldn't mind if we go, and I wouldn't mind if we stayed.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51It's a lot to give up.

0:05:51 > 0:05:52A lovely family home,

0:05:52 > 0:05:56and a close community that the Days are really involved with.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Particularly for Simon, who's leader of the local Scout pack.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02It's great fun from a personal point of view,

0:06:02 > 0:06:04and it's great for the kids too.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06We go outside whenever we can.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08It helps you become part of the community,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11and it's a good way of meeting people, who, I think,

0:06:11 > 0:06:14have a similar point of view and a similar outlook.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17But Jane believes Australia can offer the family even more.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20We do do a lot with the children now, and we go out,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23but to be able to go out and plan it

0:06:23 > 0:06:26and do more activities outdoors

0:06:26 > 0:06:30and to do it more as a whole family, I think would be great.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32That's my dream, coming home from work,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34beautiful sunshine, pick the kids up,

0:06:34 > 0:06:38go for a barbecue, glass of wine, kids playing on the beach.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40After years of wondering "what if?",

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Simon has agreed to give Australia a try,

0:06:43 > 0:06:47but convincing him it's the right move won't be easy.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49It's a bit like when you do a skydive or something.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51Why does anybody jump out of a plane?

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Because you can, and you just want to try it.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58The Days face the choice of a lifetime.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Jane knows the risk of giving up the happy successful lives

0:07:01 > 0:07:03they've worked so hard to build,

0:07:03 > 0:07:07but for years she's believed Australia could offer the family something even better,

0:07:07 > 0:07:11and with Simon willing to listen, it's now or never for her dream.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16The Days will be spending their week in Melbourne,

0:07:16 > 0:07:18Australia's second largest city.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21It should offer them a good mix of modern living,

0:07:21 > 0:07:24and the chance to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27With plenty of European influences,

0:07:27 > 0:07:30it's a popular destination with new arrivals,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33looking to start over, far from home.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36They're staying in a five bedroom house in the suburb of Toorak,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39south-east of the city centre on the Yarra river.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Its wide leafy streets and smart homes

0:07:42 > 0:07:45make this Melbourne's most desirable district.

0:07:45 > 0:07:46But will the Days agree?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50It's a bit old fashioned.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54It's very different to our home, isn't it?

0:07:54 > 0:07:56It's just very...more traditional.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59The decor may not be to die for,

0:07:59 > 0:08:02but there's plenty of room for everyone in this house.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05And with the beach close by,

0:08:05 > 0:08:08it's a perfect fit for Harry's image of Aussie living.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13My idea of Australia would be about beaches and everything,

0:08:13 > 0:08:15because we've only been here for holidays,

0:08:15 > 0:08:18so I haven't seen it on a living point of view.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21So I only really see it as a holiday place.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24I was four, I think, when I last came here,

0:08:24 > 0:08:27so I can't really remember it at all.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30I thought it would be a lot warmer than this.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35Changing Melbourne's weather might be a bit of a challenge,

0:08:35 > 0:08:38but so is persuading Simon to emigrate.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42I think in order to make a change like this, of this proportion,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45you have to have a fairly compelling reason for doing it,

0:08:45 > 0:08:48rather than it just being a nice idea, so, you know,

0:08:48 > 0:08:52hopefully this week we may end up with that compelling reason.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Back in the UK,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02the Days bought their family home at the bottom of the market,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and have watched their investment grow and grow over the years.

0:09:07 > 0:09:12It's in a highly desirable area, close to London and Simon and Jane have worked hard

0:09:12 > 0:09:14to turn it into their dream home.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19Ideally in the move to Australia, I'd like to achieve something equivalent.

0:09:19 > 0:09:25It doesn't have to be phenomenally better, but I'd like to, at least, not be stepping back.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29The dream is the swimming pool, I'm not convinced we'd get a swimming pool to start with

0:09:29 > 0:09:31but, you know, that's the dream.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35I think it's a community thing. So long as there is community bits there, I think, you know,

0:09:35 > 0:09:39you do want to try and meet people. You want the opportunity to bump into people.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43They have a budget between 800,000 and £1 million,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46depending on whether they're able to go mortgage free.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51Even so, finding something to replace a home and community they love won't be easy.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Today we'll give the Days a taste of Melbourne's property market.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59We'll show them three options based on what

0:09:59 > 0:10:03they want from their ideal home and what they can afford.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05After seeing for themselves what's on offer,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08they'll find out how much each house costs.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14The first stop of the day is in Wonga Park, a leafy suburb,

0:10:14 > 0:10:1625 miles south of the city.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20It's a large open area, but with a traditional village feel

0:10:20 > 0:10:25and shops, churches and sports facilities are all within easy reach.

0:10:25 > 0:10:30Which is just as well, as getting to the house itself requires a bit of a walk.

0:10:30 > 0:10:35I think this drive is half the length of our road.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38But, what a walk, through an acre and a half of gardens

0:10:38 > 0:10:41and at the end of it, there's quite a sight.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Can we live here, can we live here?

0:10:44 > 0:10:45THEY LAUGH

0:10:45 > 0:10:48We haven't been in the house yet. I have to say it's stunning.

0:10:48 > 0:10:53That's a great start, but will indoors be quite as impressive?

0:10:53 > 0:10:54Remove your shoes.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58Look at that. It is lovely.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03I mean, this is just lovely. Come on, I can't wait to see the rest.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04Let's have a look.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07I think Jane likes this house.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Will the open plan living area be to everyone else's taste?

0:11:11 > 0:11:13What do you think, kids?

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- Go home, pack our bags, come here. - Come back again.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18We could just phone Felicity and ask her to pack everything up.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22- I have to say, I think Felicity would just love this.- Yeah.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24She would, wouldn't she?

0:11:24 > 0:11:28If Felicity was here, she might have a fight on her hands for the best bedroom.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31I'm having this bedroom.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- This will be my room. - Oh, is it your room?

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Perhaps this should be Felicity's room.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- I disagree.- You disagree? We'll wait and see.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Fortunately, with five of them, there's space for everyone

0:11:44 > 0:11:47but I think Jane may have picked her favourite, too.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51This is every woman's dream, a walk-in wardrobe.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- There's not enough space, Simon. - I could have that one drawer there.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56- That little drawer.- Little drawer!

0:11:58 > 0:12:02With so much room on offer, there's even space for relations to visit.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07- Your mum and dad would feel really comfortable here.- Yeah.

0:12:07 > 0:12:13Which is nice, because it's important that Harry doesn't miss his grandparents.

0:12:13 > 0:12:19- And me.- And you, Eleanor. Sorry, sweetheart.- Poor Eleanor.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22Outside there's a swimming pool and deck area.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26All those uninterrupted views have made Simon think.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30I'd probably prefer to be somewhere that you could walk to the odd facility

0:12:30 > 0:12:34and I think within reasonable commuting distance of the sea.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40This house may have a lot of things going for it,

0:12:40 > 0:12:42but a beach isn't one of them.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45However, Jane is well and truly won over.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49I wouldn't even imagine owning a house like this.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53I'm still worried it might be way out of our price.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Has Jane hit the nail on the head?

0:12:56 > 0:12:58This house was hugely impressive

0:12:58 > 0:13:02but is it affordable on the Days' budget?

0:13:02 > 0:13:06To buy it without a mortgage they have £800,000 to spend.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Let's see how much it is.

0:13:09 > 0:13:10Ready...

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- Oh!- Is that a lot?- Is that a lot?

0:13:13 > 0:13:14- It is a lot.- Quite a lot.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18That's probably about the same as what we are, Eleanor

0:13:18 > 0:13:21That means we could afford it, Eleanor.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22We have to get it.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26But it would meet no pocket money probably for a year or two.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30- It's still got a swimming pool. - That's fine. So sorted.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Lots of house for the money.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Obviously, not knowing the area and everything else, but certainly there

0:13:35 > 0:13:39is a lot of land and a lot of space and a lot of swimming pool for that.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42At nearly £1 million, this house is affordable

0:13:42 > 0:13:45but only with a mortgage.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49Even so, it's got the Days' day off to a great start.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52In fact, everyone seems to be over the rainbow.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Their second house is in Wheeler's Hill,

0:13:54 > 0:13:58and older suburb closer to Melbourne centre.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00All the mod cons of city living are close by

0:14:00 > 0:14:04but with 300 acres of parkland on the doorstep, there is also

0:14:04 > 0:14:08plenty of space and greenery for outdoor lovers like the Days.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14This grand looking house is typical of the area

0:14:14 > 0:14:17but after such an impressive start, how will it compare?

0:14:19 > 0:14:22What do you think about this? This is very, very different.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25You could sing a song as you come down there.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27That's a nice study.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30- It's a bit like a head teacher's office.- A head teacher's office.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33I'm very disappointed to have you in my office again.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40What is it about Australia where they go for such a traditional, old English look?

0:14:42 > 0:14:46But, this is a very nice house and if you could see what

0:14:46 > 0:14:49I could see Eleanor, you would say it is very nice house.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51The pool's awesome.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53Is it awesome?

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Once again, there's plenty of space on offer.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58In fact the house even comes with its own pub.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- Oh!- Oh, my God.- Oh, wow.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03What do we want, then?

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Can I have Coke, please. I think that's in the fridge.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07What time do you finish, love?

0:15:07 > 0:15:08LAUGHS

0:15:08 > 0:15:12Up a very grand set of stairs, there are five bedrooms

0:15:12 > 0:15:15but no-one's rushing to claim these.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20I'm sorry but I can't go for those sofas.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Things are equally lavish in the lav.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28This is too ornate. Too...

0:15:29 > 0:15:32- I don't know... Too showy. - It's a bit fussy.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34I really couldn't see ourselves living here.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- You couldn't see yourselves living here?- It's a bit, ugh...

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Outside there are plenty of exotic plants

0:15:41 > 0:15:43and a unique piece of garden furniture.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50- As an electrical engineer, that would be quite a good talking point. - Talking point!

0:15:50 > 0:15:53They have a certain beauty about them but I wouldn't want one in the back garden.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57This house has plenty of room

0:15:57 > 0:16:01but it still hasn't won it any admirers and the idea of having

0:16:01 > 0:16:04a pylon in the back of the garden, failed to spark any enthusiasm.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10Let's see how much this one is worth, then.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14775.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16775.

0:16:16 > 0:16:22I think, 775,000 for a large five bedroomed house in what

0:16:22 > 0:16:26- appears to be a good area... - With a big garden. - ..is really good value.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31But I'm just worried that means any other property that's similar,

0:16:31 > 0:16:36without the pylon, is going to be considerably more.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40It doesn't matter how much it was, I wouldn't buy the house.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46This house would offer the Days the mortgage free option they were hoping for

0:16:46 > 0:16:50but it looks like no amount of money could persuade them to live here.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55The final stop is even closer to the city centre.

0:16:55 > 0:17:01It's in Parkdale, a bustling modern suburb with excellent transport links.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04It has a vibrant community and is only a short drive

0:17:04 > 0:17:08from the coast, two things Simon was keen to find in an Aussie home.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13The last house is architect designed with four bedrooms,

0:17:13 > 0:17:16two bathrooms and heaps of living space.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Could the modern, open style be more to everyone's taste?

0:17:20 > 0:17:26This is what I thought a modern Australian home would be like.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- Yeah, me too.- Although...- Although?

0:17:30 > 0:17:34Although it may just be this big area which means it really is

0:17:34 > 0:17:36open plan living.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40Away from the central area, the four bedrooms are in a separate wing.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44- It's a nice bedroom size.- Yeah.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49- Yeah, it's a good size. You could get a double bed in here.- Yeah.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51A clever wardrobe idea.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54- I like that.- It's deep.- Very deep.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Look, that's nice.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59I'm going to sound really picky,

0:17:59 > 0:18:02but I'm a bit concerned it's not big enough now.

0:18:02 > 0:18:07I think Jane may have forgotten she's supposed to be persuading everyone to move here.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Perhaps the main bathroom will get her back on message.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12This is nice. Nice and modern.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of gilt, actually(!)

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Other than that, it's very nice.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21And the master bedroom is also a "gilt-free" pleasure.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26- This is a nice bedroom. I like this, do you?- Yeah, I do.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30We have, Eleanor, another beautiful walk-in wardrobe.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34With so many stylish features, this house is really impressing

0:18:34 > 0:18:37but it is missing something important to the Days.

0:18:38 > 0:18:43The only thing this house doesn't give us is a guest area.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46It's only got four bedrooms.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51No fifth bedroom could be a problem for visiting loved ones.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53But Simon may have a solution.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Da-da, da-la,

0:18:56 > 0:18:57da-da-da, la-la-la!

0:18:57 > 0:18:58Da-da, da-la,

0:18:58 > 0:19:00da-da, da-da, da-da!

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Anything can happen in the next half hour.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Dad, you are very funny.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09I suppose you can divide this off if you've got somebody here who is staying.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14Despite his worries, property three has definitely made a positive impression on Simon.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18It's a great house, I think. I mean, it's always a trade-off between things, really.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23I guess if you want to be closer to the sea and transport,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25you have somewhere that is a little smaller.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Depending always on how much it is.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32It looks as if the Days have found a genuine dream home but along with

0:19:32 > 0:19:38its style, and situation, does this house come with the right price tag?

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Let's see how much this one is worth.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43- Are you ready?- Yeah.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Wow! 1.2 million.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49That's a shame.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Work for a few more years!

0:19:51 > 0:19:56- I'm not surprised.- I'm not, no. - In some respects, it is the location.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58- Yes, we can afford it...- Well.

0:19:58 > 0:20:02- I'm assuming we can afford it. - Are you, dear?- Yes, I am.

0:20:03 > 0:20:08But, would we spend £1.2 million to live in a house like this

0:20:08 > 0:20:11next to the sea and a very good school?

0:20:11 > 0:20:15- We could do, it has certain attractions, I think.- But would we?

0:20:15 > 0:20:18We'd have to discuss it, I think. We could, yes. We could...

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- If we wished to.- OK.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25At £200,000 over budget,

0:20:25 > 0:20:29buying this house would mean digging very deep for Jane and Simon.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32Even so, it looks like the subject is at least up for discussion.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38It's been very grand day out for the Days.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41The first house had acres of space, indoors and out.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Although the price was right, the location

0:20:44 > 0:20:46and lack of community, weren't.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51The second was also spacious and could have come mortgage free

0:20:51 > 0:20:55but the decor was too dated and the garden provided a shocking surprise.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00The stylish final property definitely had the wow factor

0:21:00 > 0:21:03but that also included its price.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05Affording it would be a real stretch.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11Have the Days seen enough in Melbourne to convince them to leave the home they love?

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Based on the houses we've seen, we are voting for...

0:21:22 > 0:21:25ALL: Australia!

0:21:25 > 0:21:29- We are unanimous.- Great, full house! That's good. I'm pleased about that.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32- I'm sure Felicity would say Australia, too.- Australia.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Yay, very good.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38We have seen some really wonderful houses and I think even you...

0:21:38 > 0:21:40Even I was more impressed than I thought I would be.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Actually, I didn't think you wouldn't like the houses.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46- I think the big test when it comes to jobs.- Yeah, I suppose so.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Makes a difference. So, yeah.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58After seeing some genuine and affordable dream Aussie houses,

0:21:58 > 0:22:00it's an ideal start for Jane

0:22:00 > 0:22:04and a very happy looking Simon is even better news.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07If Australia can also offer him the right career opportunities,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Jane's hopes will be taking a huge step forward.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16At home, Simon is a commercial manager in the technology industry.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19It's a job he loves with more rewards than just a salary.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22I've always had something where there's been travelling involved,

0:22:22 > 0:22:26either going out to customers, or seeking out new markets.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29I think if I had to do something that was a nine to five,

0:22:29 > 0:22:34five days a week, 45 weeks a year going to the same place,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37then I would probably find that somewhat tiresome.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41For Simon work has got to be fulfilling first.

0:22:41 > 0:22:42Money comes second.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47His current job is highly specialist and changing roles is one

0:22:47 > 0:22:51option that could make the most of his skills in Australia.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53Today he is meeting Marian Schoen,

0:22:53 > 0:22:57at the University of Melbourne's School of Technology.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01While Simon gets a close-up view of the university's latest research,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04Jane is job-hunting, too.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06She had a long-term career in business

0:23:06 > 0:23:09and now teaches business studies part-time.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15She's meeting head teacher, Heather Schnagl to find out about her prospects.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Heather, I just teach GCSE and A-levels back in the UK

0:23:18 > 0:23:21so I'm only teaching from Year 10 upwards.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25I'd be really interested to see that area within the school.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27We'll go into the Year 12 Centre.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30I hate to think what sort of mess it is.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32It's probably like every sixth form.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36While Jane carries on the tour, Simon's keen to discover

0:23:36 > 0:23:41if his skills and experience could help him fit in to university life.

0:23:41 > 0:23:46I think with your industry background, and your business development skills,

0:23:46 > 0:23:50- one of those areas would be in commercialisation.- OK.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52That means taking the technology that we've developed

0:23:52 > 0:23:57- through our research, looking for investors and taking it to market. - Mmm...

0:23:57 > 0:24:01So if there was a role available, do you think somebody like me would be seriously considered for that?

0:24:01 > 0:24:05Certainly. I think with your background in industry relations

0:24:05 > 0:24:10and product development, I think it would make you very attractive candidate.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13That's positive news.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15Are Jane's prospects sounding as good?

0:24:16 > 0:24:20Heather, based on my CV and my experience, would you consider

0:24:20 > 0:24:23employing a teacher with my experience in the school?

0:24:23 > 0:24:26We would be very interested in having you join us.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30The reality is, if you're talking about business, to have people who have worked

0:24:30 > 0:24:33outside teaching is a huge advantage because you have

0:24:33 > 0:24:38so many practical examples that you can bring into the classroom.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40What about the real business?

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Salary level, how does that compare to the UK?

0:24:42 > 0:24:49To give you an idea, the current top of our teaching scale is 89,600 Australian dollars.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53Which having just converted it on today's exchange rate is

0:24:53 > 0:24:59- about £57,700.- That's considerably more than we get paid in the UK!

0:24:59 > 0:25:01And across the city, Simon would like to know

0:25:01 > 0:25:04if his salary could go up as much?

0:25:04 > 0:25:08In a commercialisation role, what sort of salary might one expect?

0:25:08 > 0:25:14It would be around 130 to 135,000 plus the superannuation component.

0:25:14 > 0:25:19Overall, a package of around say 160 to 165,000.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23Right, OK, that's interesting. That's well over £100,000 for the package.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27The salary package is impressive, but would a career in Australia

0:25:27 > 0:25:30offer Simon the quality of work he loves?

0:25:30 > 0:25:34I always aimed to add international aspects to my role.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36I'd be interested to know whether coming here

0:25:36 > 0:25:40there'd be some prospect of that?

0:25:40 > 0:25:43If it was a role, in a sense,

0:25:43 > 0:25:46marketing and developing products for commercial services, I imagine

0:25:46 > 0:25:50most of that would be within Australia, or within Victoria.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53That's less positive.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Travel is important to Simon and working here could well mean

0:25:56 > 0:26:00making changes if he were to emigrate.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Jane's had good news on all fronts.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05How will they vote on working in Melbourne?

0:26:05 > 0:26:08Based on our job experiences in Australia, we are voting for...

0:26:15 > 0:26:17- Australia!- UK!

0:26:17 > 0:26:21- Why the UK?- Um...

0:26:21 > 0:26:24- Er, yes.- Come on?

0:26:24 > 0:26:28Well, I've got a good job and it's something I enjoy

0:26:28 > 0:26:31and I think it's quite hard then to...

0:26:31 > 0:26:34It takes a lot of work to find something to match it.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37I really think that, you know, once you're involved...

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Give it a second view.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43I think, once you get involved in a job in Australia, I think

0:26:43 > 0:26:47you'd probably enjoy it just as much but only you can decide that, I know.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Despite the benefits on offer, and Jane's best efforts,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59Simon is reluctant to give up on the career he loves.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02But with good salaries on offer, life in Melbourne

0:27:02 > 0:27:05is beginning to look very promising.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Getting the right valuation from their UK home could make that

0:27:08 > 0:27:10big decision a lot simpler.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14Back in Harpenden, the Days own a four-bedroom house,

0:27:14 > 0:27:19which has risen sharply in value since they bought it, 11 years ago.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22They believe it's worth around £1 million,

0:27:22 > 0:27:24but with Aussie homes looking every bit as expensive,

0:27:24 > 0:27:27getting a good valuation will be vital

0:27:27 > 0:27:30to whether the Days can afford this move or not.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34This is nice. They've done a lovely job on this room.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36Nice, light colours.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38They've continued the wooden flooring throughout.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40A really good job.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Why is he going back in the house.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47- It's a different person. - They all look very similar.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50Wow! What a great space. Really superb.

0:27:50 > 0:27:55Again, works tremendously well from a light and airy point of view.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58I can imagine most families spending most of their time

0:27:58 > 0:28:01in this part of the house.

0:28:01 > 0:28:02That's a good little boy's room.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05Looks like it belongs to a young lad called Harry.

0:28:05 > 0:28:06THEY LAUGH

0:28:11 > 0:28:14It's the smallest room in the house but I think compared to

0:28:14 > 0:28:18modern day building standards, it's a good sized kid's room.

0:28:18 > 0:28:19Yeah, this is a stunning room.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23This is very rare within the area to have a master bedroom this size.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27In the current market conditions, and it is very busy,

0:28:27 > 0:28:31I'd recommend an asking price of 1.1 million. For a quick sale, a guide price of £1 million

0:28:31 > 0:28:33should achieve a fast result.

0:28:33 > 0:28:34Crikey!

0:28:34 > 0:28:37So based on today's market, I value this house at £1 million.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39Although, for a prompt sale,

0:28:39 > 0:28:42we ought to go nearer 975.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48- Yeah, pretty good.- It's not bad, is it?

0:28:48 > 0:28:51I think that extension's paid off. It's certainly brought the value of the house up.

0:28:51 > 0:28:56Which is quite good because when you think of properties that we've seen here in Australia,

0:28:56 > 0:28:59- then they would be within our reach. - Yeah.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01- That's quite promising.- Yeah.

0:29:01 > 0:29:06- From that side, that's a positive for Australia.- Oh, yeah, yeah.

0:29:06 > 0:29:07That's good.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10That's one big stumbling block out of the way

0:29:10 > 0:29:14but what about the Days' cost of living in Melbourne?

0:29:14 > 0:29:16We've prepared a summary of their expenses

0:29:16 > 0:29:20so they can compare their finances at home and in Australia.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23First, it's the weekly shopping bill.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26- So what's our total? - It's about £130 in the UK.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29- Right.- And 160 here.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33You're only talking about £30 more, it's not a massive difference, is it?

0:29:33 > 0:29:37- No, it's about 25%. - That's not frightening.

0:29:37 > 0:29:41To keep things simple, Jane and Simon have decided to take

0:29:41 > 0:29:44a cautious approach to their choice of property.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46We are going to work this basis out on the fact that

0:29:46 > 0:29:49if we move here, we are going to buy a house that would allow us to

0:29:49 > 0:29:51- be mortgage free, are we? - Yeah, definitely.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55- OK, because that's something we would want to do.- Yeah.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58That might mean no that dream house but without a mortgage to pay,

0:29:58 > 0:30:00the figures look encouraging.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04The cost of living in UK is 2,985,

0:30:04 > 0:30:05we reckon here will be about 3,020.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09So, more or less the same.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11- There's only £35 difference. - 35 quid.

0:30:11 > 0:30:13- That's not very much.- A month.

0:30:13 > 0:30:17And with increased salaries a real possibility for Jane and Simon,

0:30:17 > 0:30:20they could be in for a very pleasant surprise.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23If we look at what you're earning in the UK,

0:30:23 > 0:30:2614,000 on two days a week, whereas over here would be

0:30:26 > 0:30:29- somewhere around 57,000, but full-time.- Yeah.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32- That's fine.- It's very fine!

0:30:32 > 0:30:36For me there's a big difference, in the UK, 60,000

0:30:36 > 0:30:41and over here, over 100,000. Yeah, a difference of over 40,000.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43I mean, that's a really big difference.

0:30:43 > 0:30:47Even allowing for deductions, it's a real jump in their income.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50What's that all-important bottom line?

0:30:50 > 0:30:52On an annual basis...

0:30:52 > 0:30:55- Times 12.- It's about 67,000.

0:30:55 > 0:30:5767,000? Better off!

0:30:57 > 0:30:59SHE LAUGHS

0:30:59 > 0:31:01You know, with that sort of difference, Simon,

0:31:01 > 0:31:05we could look at private education for the children in Australia.

0:31:05 > 0:31:10We would have such a comfortable lifestyle. To me...

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Even more comfortable lifestyle.

0:31:12 > 0:31:17- I grant you, but that is an amazing difference.- Mmm.

0:31:17 > 0:31:22- I can't see how we can not do that.- No. It's surprising.

0:31:22 > 0:31:26It looks as if the Days may be about to make their easiest decision of the week.

0:31:26 > 0:31:31Has the door just swung wide open to a move down under?

0:31:31 > 0:31:34Based on the cost of living, we are voting for...

0:31:41 > 0:31:43- Australia!- Australia.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48- There was no other choice, was there? - There wasn't, no.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51- Not on those figures. - No, no, it had to be.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53I'm really pleased, and er, surprised

0:31:53 > 0:31:55at the amount of difference.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57Yeah, that's fantastic. Well done. Thanks.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07That's quite a result for the Days on paper.

0:32:07 > 0:32:12It looks like life in Melbourne could offer a big boost to their finances.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15Even so, they know this move isn't about money,

0:32:15 > 0:32:19it's about being able to enjoy the kind of family lifestyle that

0:32:19 > 0:32:23Jane has long dreamt of and if Australia can offer that

0:32:23 > 0:32:26it's another step in the right direction.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29Messing about on the river is a classic English pastime,

0:32:29 > 0:32:33but being able to enjoy a taste of home down under might be another

0:32:33 > 0:32:36big plus for the Days.

0:32:36 > 0:32:37- It's small.- It's small.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- That's what we should expect you to be.- I'm medium.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Dad's a large. And Mum's a small.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44- You're just pushing it, you are. - Let's go.

0:32:44 > 0:32:49Ready to cast off on the great adventure, then Els? See you later.

0:32:49 > 0:32:53Look at that, look at that, Harry. You're a natural oarsperson.

0:32:53 > 0:32:57- I'm doing it calmly, first. - You're doing it very calmly.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00Very calmly and very well, I think there.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Actually, Eleanor, we could take it up. What do you think?

0:33:04 > 0:33:06- Let's join Oxford or Cambridge. - I don't think so.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11With the wind in the willows and the Aussie sun shining down,

0:33:11 > 0:33:15it's a reminder to Jane of what inspired her dream of emigrating.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17We get the best of both worlds, don't we?

0:33:17 > 0:33:21The beach sometimes and here which is really lovely.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24It isn't quite what I had in mind when I think of Australia.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26It's really beautiful, actually.

0:33:26 > 0:33:30I'd much rather spend my weekends with the children doing these things

0:33:30 > 0:33:33than prising them away from the games console.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37What better way than to just sit back and relax on the river

0:33:37 > 0:33:40and be rowed around by your children.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43- Are you rowing now?- Thank you!

0:33:43 > 0:33:47And Melbourne's outdoor lifestyle seems to be having a positive

0:33:47 > 0:33:49effect on the whole family.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54If we did move here, I would hope that we could go out on the river

0:33:54 > 0:33:58and row and kind of spend a bit more family time together,

0:33:58 > 0:34:01rather than just inside.

0:34:01 > 0:34:05I also think Dad is liking it a lot more than he did at home

0:34:05 > 0:34:07because I think he's seeing more of what we could do here

0:34:07 > 0:34:10and the different places we could buy and things like that.

0:34:10 > 0:34:17- It's like a new life, not life... - Perception.- Yeah, that word.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20This is like a change to what I thought.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25So far, I think Australia is exceeding my expectations.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28I've been more impressed than I thought perhaps I would have been.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33Seeing Simon and the children happy is exactly what Jane

0:34:33 > 0:34:35hoped for on this trip.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38And although leaving home may be tough,

0:34:38 > 0:34:41it doesn't necessarily mean giving up everything the Days love.

0:34:42 > 0:34:47In fact, scouting is just as popular in Australia with boys and girls

0:34:47 > 0:34:52and this afternoon the Days are joining the 1st Baden Powell Scout pack.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54Welcome to our group, the Baden Powell pack.

0:34:54 > 0:34:55We're the biggest in Australia.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57You joined us on a terrific afternoon because we've got

0:34:57 > 0:35:01a construction activity going on and we've got some bush cooking as well.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03- Let's go over here. - That sounds great.

0:35:05 > 0:35:09- Jane and Eleanor gets stuck in immediately.- It's like making bread.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13- Do you remember when we made bread at home?- No.- No!

0:35:13 > 0:35:14THEY LAUGH

0:35:14 > 0:35:16And Simon is in his element.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19Can you smell that sweet smell of our Eucalyptus from our gum trees.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22- That burns well, actually.- It does.

0:35:23 > 0:35:27Being in a familiar setting may have helped him turn a corner.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30Look at that. A bit of charcoal smoke, cooked on an open fire,

0:35:30 > 0:35:33in the Bush. Sunshine, Victoria, what more do you want?

0:35:33 > 0:35:37He's definitely found his comfort zone.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39Is terrific being with like-minded people

0:35:39 > 0:35:42and seeing much the same sort of things going on and I think

0:35:42 > 0:35:47we've all seen what a friendly welcome we've had when we turned up.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50It's really lovely to see Simon finally enjoying himself.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53This is the real Simon, really happy-go-lucky

0:35:53 > 0:35:55and that is the most important thing.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58I want to see him like this all the time

0:35:58 > 0:36:01and hopefully get that pressure away.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04It's been an ideal day out for the whole family,

0:36:04 > 0:36:08but at the end of it how will they vote on the Aussie lifestyle?

0:36:08 > 0:36:10We've had a fantastic day today on the river

0:36:10 > 0:36:12and with the Scout group here.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15Based on our lifestyle activity, we are voting for...

0:36:22 > 0:36:24- HARRY:- UK.- OTHERS:- Australia!

0:36:24 > 0:36:27- Harry?- Harry.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29- What?- I'm really surprised.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32- Why did you vote UK?- I don't know.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35I prefer England with Scouts because I know everyone there

0:36:35 > 0:36:37and friends and things.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40- So it's about feeling comfortable with your friends?- Yes.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44- You'll make lots of friends here. - You've enjoyed today, haven't you?

0:36:44 > 0:36:47- Yeah, but still I prefer the UK. - From the activity point of view.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49- Evidently...- Yeah.

0:36:49 > 0:36:53I expect Australia to be good from an activity point of view.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56I've had a nice morning and an even better afternoon, I think.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00- This afternoon has been superb. - It was lovely. You really looked like you were enjoying it.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03I thought you all were, actually. It was great to see.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10Sampling the Melbourne lifestyle was a big success,

0:37:10 > 0:37:13a home from home for Simon.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16Harry's vote was a reminder of one thing Australia can't offer,

0:37:16 > 0:37:19the family and friends they love.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23Will seeing messages from them make their final choice any clearer?

0:37:25 > 0:37:27With messages for everyone,

0:37:27 > 0:37:32Simon and Jane have decided to watch their DVD together, as a family.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36Hi, guys, I hope you're all having an amazing time, missing you lots.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38I'm jealous I can't be there.

0:37:38 > 0:37:39ALL. Hi.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42I hope you're having a great time over there in Australia.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44My mum and dad are really different.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46That's why they work so well together.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49My dad's the practical,

0:37:49 > 0:37:53um, keeps everyone's head on their shoulders person.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57Whereas, Mum's maybe a little bit more......

0:37:57 > 0:37:59A bit more fun, a bit more spontaneous.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02She's a good girl, I've trained her well.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04- Mum's more fun.- Yeah.

0:38:04 > 0:38:09Me and Jane, talk to each other a lot.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13Yes, it does bother me that she would be as far as way as she is,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17they're going to be, but it still has to be what's right for her.

0:38:17 > 0:38:22You know, you're always sisters, that never changes.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27I'm never going to forget you, Harry.

0:38:27 > 0:38:32You've been a friend for a great time now and...

0:38:34 > 0:38:38I'm really going to come and visit you a lot.

0:38:38 > 0:38:40JANE: I hope so, Wills.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45Guys, I hope you've had an amazing week.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48I love you all so much and I'm missing you lots.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51I just want you to make the right decision for you

0:38:51 > 0:38:55and I'll support you whatever you do and I love you all lots.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57Thanks, Felicity.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00Just go for it and have a great time

0:39:00 > 0:39:04and experience all that Australia has to offer you and your family.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08- And, good luck.- Bye! - We're going to miss you.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12- That was very nice. - That was interesting, wasn't it?

0:39:12 > 0:39:17Has seeing Felicity on the video made you think any differently about our potential move over here?

0:39:19 > 0:39:20No, it doesn't. I'm still convinced.

0:39:20 > 0:39:25I've got no reason to believe that she would not come out now.

0:39:25 > 0:39:30If we were here, all that's going to do is cement that view of hers.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33The other way around, I don't want her to be here in two

0:39:33 > 0:39:38or three years time and us not, knowing that we could. Yeah, it's...

0:39:39 > 0:39:43No, it hasn't changed my mind, sweetheart.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50Hearing from friends and family touched everyone

0:39:50 > 0:39:55and for the Days, their week has come down to one question.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56Are they ready to give up everything

0:39:56 > 0:40:00they have at home for the promise of a new life down under?

0:40:00 > 0:40:03After years of hoping and soul-searching,

0:40:03 > 0:40:05it's finally time to decide.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14The Australian experience has been fantastic.

0:40:14 > 0:40:19It has helped confirm all of my views that I had over the last five years.

0:40:19 > 0:40:25It's not that my life is wanting in any great way, cos it's not.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29This just gives you something else to try and enjoy.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32That's what life's about.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35I was apprehensive about coming here.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37I thought the best thing to do was kind of wait

0:40:37 > 0:40:40and see how the thing formed and then take it all in.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43I've enjoyed it more than I thought I would, actually.

0:40:43 > 0:40:48I think, from that aspect, it's been pleasantly surprising, I guess.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53Yeah, I can imagine myself living here in Australia

0:40:53 > 0:40:58but I would still really, really miss Felis if she didn't move

0:40:58 > 0:41:01or my friends. Even though I know I'd stay in touch with them,

0:41:01 > 0:41:04it would be nice if I could see them more often.

0:41:05 > 0:41:10You can't really let friends go because they are like...

0:41:10 > 0:41:12- Really important?- They're important.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15It may have been more than he hoped for,

0:41:15 > 0:41:19but has the last week been enough to convince not just Simon

0:41:19 > 0:41:23but the whole family to start a new life in Australia?

0:41:24 > 0:41:26We have had a fantastic week in Australia.

0:41:26 > 0:41:30Based on our experiences, the country we are going to live in is...

0:41:42 > 0:41:44- ALL. Australia!- Undecided.

0:41:44 > 0:41:49Hang on, we've got three Australia's and an undecided.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53What made you undecided, Eleanor?

0:41:53 > 0:41:56I just don't want to leave my friends and family behind.

0:41:56 > 0:41:57I understand.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00If I didn't like the things in Australia, I would have gone UK.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03That makes sense, sweetheart That's absolutely fine.

0:42:03 > 0:42:07Harry, gosh, Australia too, I thought you might go undecided.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09- Or the UK.- Yeah.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12Er, well...

0:42:12 > 0:42:15Is just the housing was really good and I liked the lake

0:42:15 > 0:42:18and the river and what we could do here,

0:42:18 > 0:42:20but I think I still would miss my friends and family.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23Yeah, you would, sweetheart. That's really good.

0:42:23 > 0:42:27- Simon, big surprise, Australia. - Yeah, there we go.

0:42:27 > 0:42:30What made you think that we could live in Australia?

0:42:30 > 0:42:33It's been a good week. I think the kids have enjoyed it.

0:42:33 > 0:42:38I think we've found out lots and I think it's a place where we could be happy!

0:42:38 > 0:42:39Move to!

0:42:39 > 0:42:41I do appreciate it's still a big move

0:42:41 > 0:42:44and it will take a lot of support and different things to do

0:42:44 > 0:42:47but it's really good to see that you've looked at the positive side

0:42:47 > 0:42:50and can see the possibilities. That's great.

0:42:52 > 0:42:57After a week to remember, Simon's been won over by life in Melbourne.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59And although Eleanor may need a little more time,

0:42:59 > 0:43:03Jane's many years of hopes could be coming to an end.

0:43:03 > 0:43:06We wish them a very happy future.
