0:00:02 > 0:00:05For most families, moving to another country

0:00:05 > 0:00:07is a once-in-a-lifetime event,

0:00:07 > 0:00:11but if you'd tried it before and your dream hadn't worked out,

0:00:11 > 0:00:17would you be willing to risk everything again, especially if your partner didn't share your dream?

0:00:17 > 0:00:22James Watt is desperate to return to the country he fell for.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26I loved it. I absolutely loved the water, the lifestyle.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30I loved being outdoors. I loved the easy-going nature of people.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35But fiancee Farah can't bear to leave her life behind.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37I just don't think that...

0:00:38 > 0:00:45..you can replace your friends and your family for...for the sunshine.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49A week in Australia exploring the possibilities could tear them apart.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51It's not for me.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Surrounded by thousands of miles of beaches,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23covered in unspoilt landscapes and renowned for its climate,

0:01:23 > 0:01:28Australia is the biggest lure for Brits looking for a new life,

0:01:28 > 0:01:32but all too often, the reality doesn't match the dream

0:01:32 > 0:01:36and nearly a third of all new arrivals give up and return home.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Over the next seven days, the Watt family will experience the reality

0:01:40 > 0:01:44of everyday life in Australia, then they'll face a critical choice -

0:01:44 > 0:01:49whether to stay in the UK or to make the move for good.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55The first step for the Watts involves crossing three continents,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58travelling over 10,000 miles.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05It's a gruelling experience, even for someone who's done it before.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11I'd kind of forgotten in the ten years how long that flight is.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16I hardly slept and I feel like death warmed up right now.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20I hated it. I've never sat so still for so long.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23I found it incredibly difficult.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27Maybe it's an age thing, because for one person, it was very different.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31I actually found it quite nice, the aeroplane.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35I did get a decent amount of sleep and luckily, I didn't snore.

0:02:35 > 0:02:41Hopefully, the rest of this crucial week will be a positive experience for everyone.

0:02:42 > 0:02:48In the UK, Farah, James and 14-year-old Kasim Watt live in Cornwall

0:02:48 > 0:02:51in the pretty seaside village of Porthtowan.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55They've been together for nine years.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00In 2007, they all visited Cornwall and fell in love straight away.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03We saw the sunshine, the blue sea.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- Palm trees.- Palm trees.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Just absolutely beautiful and it was a nice little village

0:03:09 > 0:03:15that I had always kind of dreamed of when I was younger and I just went, "Why don't we move there?"

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Cornwall does grasp me.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22It's just got that...

0:03:22 > 0:03:26I don't know, it just... it just catches me.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31James was like, "No way do I want to move to Cornwall."

0:03:31 > 0:03:34At first I was a bit reluctant, but I loved it.

0:03:34 > 0:03:40James had a reason for being reluctant about Cornwall. His heart was in Australia.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44In 2001, I went out there for a working holiday

0:03:44 > 0:03:50and spent a year there and fell in love with the place and I've wanted to go back ever since.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53And I loved it.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56I absolutely loved the water, the lifestyle.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00I loved being outdoors. I loved the easy-going nature of people.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04You could walk down the street and everyone will say "hello" to you.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I tried that in England and everyone thought I was weird.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13But over a decade later, James is still drawn towards the life Australia could offer.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17I like it warm. I like to be in my shorts all year round.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I don't like dodging the rain.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23I don't like the cold. I can't stand it.

0:04:23 > 0:04:29He believes emigrating would give them all the chance to live the active outdoor lifestyle they love.

0:04:29 > 0:04:34- It's nice to be down the beach, but the weather here is, um... - Misty.- Yeah.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37You've got this lovely view that you can't see.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42If it's always hot, you get bored of it,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45whereas at least here in England, you get different...

0:04:45 > 0:04:50- You get the change... - But you get a varied change of hot though, don't you?

0:04:50 > 0:04:55We get slightly mild and damp in the summer and cold in the winter.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59It's not cold. You've not got your hat and... You've got your gloves on.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02And I'm freezing. So I'm quite happy to go somewhere warm.

0:05:02 > 0:05:09Now James wants to give Australia a try, but he still has to convince Farah and Kasim.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14I really want to go. I had a feeling of "this is the place I want to be".

0:05:14 > 0:05:20- If you feel like your heart's somewhere, you want to go. - Yeah, mine's here in England.

0:05:21 > 0:05:28'I don't know if I'd want to go somewhere that is so far from everybody else.'

0:05:28 > 0:05:30This is far enough.

0:05:30 > 0:05:36This is like being on the other side of the world...for me.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40The Watts have tried to achieve James's dream closer to home.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44Two years ago, they moved abroad. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49We moved to Malta to see if we could get a similar experience to Australia,

0:05:49 > 0:05:54as in warmth and the sea and things like that, but closer to home.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58But unfortunately, that didn't work out.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02Kas's schooling didn't help. I found it difficult with work.

0:06:02 > 0:06:07Farah enjoyed her work there, but she didn't like the place very much.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12We moved over to Malta and I just didn't like it.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18I missed tons of people back here, so I was kind of a bit sad.

0:06:18 > 0:06:24Farah has achieved the life she wants in Cornwall and she doesn't want to give it all up.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27It's leaving everybody else behind.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Maybe when I was younger, I didn't think about those kind of things.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34You just get up and you go, whereas now that I'm older,

0:06:34 > 0:06:39you kind of want your comforts and my friends and my family are my comforts.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44And it's very hard to build those kind of friendships.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49With so many doubts about the move, everything is at stake.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54I'm hoping it's everything I remember it to be, but there is a chance that it isn't.

0:06:57 > 0:07:03We need to decide if we're going to continue this relationship. That's what it boils down to.

0:07:03 > 0:07:11That if James thoroughly enjoys Australia, you could make that choice.

0:07:11 > 0:07:17And...if I want to be in England, closer to...

0:07:18 > 0:07:23..closer to the people that I love, then that's what I have to do.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30It's something that we have to decide.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38I just don't think that...

0:07:38 > 0:07:44you can replace your friends and your family for...for the sunshine.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49You're just moving a bit further away. You're not replacing anyone.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55We'll have to see.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02The Watts face a huge decision.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06James is convinced Australia can offer his family a better life,

0:08:06 > 0:08:11but Farah knows giving up the one they have will be even tougher the second time around.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16With their family's future at stake, one of them could be facing heartbreak.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23During that time, they'll be sampling everything Brisbane has to offer.

0:08:23 > 0:08:28It's a thriving city, renowned for its golden beaches and vibrant cultural life,

0:08:28 > 0:08:30just what James is looking for.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34Their home for the trial week is in the Oyster Point area.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38This three-bedroom property should give them a good idea

0:08:38 > 0:08:41about what they could expect from Australian houses.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Wow!

0:08:43 > 0:08:46- Oh, I like this.- Oh, wow!

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Oh, wow! I love the colours.

0:08:49 > 0:08:55- Right, OK. I'm not sure about... It's a bit blue for my taste. - I love it. I love it.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59- It's more of a sea look, really. - Yeah, I like that.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04It's a nice size.

0:09:04 > 0:09:11- Yeah, compared to the size of our house, it's like a mansion, isn't it?- It's huge.- It's lovely.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Oh, a curved staircase!

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Yeah. Oh, wow!

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Do you know? It's quite a big house.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21It's a lot bigger than you think, yeah.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23- This is really nice. - It is good, yeah.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26This house is just the start James wanted,

0:09:26 > 0:09:30but Farah is not going to be won over that easily.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34I think there are just too many houses. I don't know...

0:09:34 > 0:09:37- You like to be a hermit?- Yes. JAMES LAUGHS

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Their entire future is riding on this week

0:09:40 > 0:09:45and James is fully aware it could all be based on a holiday fantasy.

0:09:45 > 0:09:51I've got memories from ten years ago that were great and ever since then, I've wanted to come back,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54but now, is it the same as it was before?

0:09:54 > 0:09:57The only reason I'm considering this move

0:09:57 > 0:10:03is because this is something that you've always wanted.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07I can't say, "Yes, I'd like to move here."

0:10:13 > 0:10:18In the UK, the Watts rent this modest, two-bedroom cottage in Cornwall.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23Situated by the coast, it's a home that gives them everything they need.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27I love this house. It's just so quirky.

0:10:27 > 0:10:34And they want something simple, but in a good location in Australia, to give them the lifestyle they love.

0:10:34 > 0:10:39I'd like a house that's walkable to the beach, has some character.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43It doesn't have to be too big or modern. It needs to be a home.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45It needs to have a family feel.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49I hate the city. I was brought up in the city. I never want to be there.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52I love like a little village or a town.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56Today, we'll give the Watts a taste of Brisbane's rental market.

0:10:56 > 0:11:02We'll show them three options based on what they want from their ideal home and what they can afford.

0:11:02 > 0:11:08After seeing for themselves what's on offer, they'll find out how much each house costs.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12The first house is in the town of Capalaba.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16It's on the outskirts of Brisbane near the coast

0:11:16 > 0:11:19and has good transport links for work in the city.

0:11:19 > 0:11:25This two-bedroom property is up for rent only a couple of miles from the beach.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28Can it get house-hunting off to a flying start?

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- OK.- It's quite basic, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33It's a small kitchen, to be fair.

0:11:33 > 0:11:39The Watts don't sound too thrilled by this house and James has spotted a very undesirable feature.

0:11:39 > 0:11:44- Does it come free with the cockroach, do you think? - Yuck!- That's not good.- Forget that!

0:11:44 > 0:11:50The cockroach problem could be easily solved, but Farah isn't taken with the garden either.

0:11:50 > 0:11:56- I don't like the fact that it's all enclosed.- They have the big fences, so they've got the privacy.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01- I don't really need any privacy. I'm quite...- You're quite friendly.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05Perhaps the upstairs can make a better case for this house.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Right, Kas, this is our bedroom.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11It's got a balcony.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16At last, something positive to talk about. Or did I speak too soon?

0:12:16 > 0:12:19James, that bit looks really worn.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23- It's not the most secure of things I've ever seen.- It is as well.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- I'm going back in. - It's rotten, that bit.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30It's going from bad to worse and James has spotted more problems.

0:12:30 > 0:12:35- It just looks as if the floor's coming way. - Look at that. You can push that in.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Oh, dear.

0:12:37 > 0:12:42I don't know if the landlord would sort this stuff out.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Well, technically, they should.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48James seems to be grasping at straws.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52I don't think this is the Australian dream Kas and Farah had imagined.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55- So what do you think, Kas? - It's quite big, but...

0:12:55 > 0:12:59- Do you prefer our house that we've got at the moment or...?- Yeah.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03For me, Australia is about the leisure side.

0:13:03 > 0:13:09I can put up with a house that's OK. It's not perfect. It's OK to start with.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11But we've still not seen the beach.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17James might be OK with this house, but could they afford to live here?

0:13:17 > 0:13:21How will it sit with their rental budget of around £850?

0:13:21 > 0:13:24OK, Kas, are you going to turn it over?

0:13:24 > 0:13:27Dun-dun-du-u-un! Put it on...

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- 780.- Oh, 780 for this?!

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Jeez, that's expensive!

0:13:33 > 0:13:38It's a lot for the house, but if that's how much they are...

0:13:38 > 0:13:40£780?

0:13:40 > 0:13:44I really don't like the house to pay that.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47This house really is a no-go for Farah.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51The commute, not being able to be like close to the sea...

0:13:53 > 0:13:57For me, that kind of outweighs the price.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01- Fair enough.- Sorry.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04It's been a bad start for Australian property.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09Hopefully for James, the next house can start moving things in his favour.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13It's in the Cleveland area 18 miles from the city centre.

0:14:13 > 0:14:19Being right on the coast, it's a desirable location, much more in keeping with their tastes.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24Unfortunately, the weather is exactly what James is trying to leave behind in the UK.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28- It must be this one.- Yeah.

0:14:28 > 0:14:34- This is nice with the white picket fence.- That's really nice. I like that.- It's got a veranda, garden.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37James is being quick to point out the positives.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41Hopefully, this two-bedroom semi won't need too much sales talk.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43In you go.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47- See what you think, say what you see.- Wow!- This is really nice.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50- That's cool, that is. - This is much nicer.- Yeah.

0:14:50 > 0:14:56You've got the kitchen here. You can be in the kitchen and you can still see into the lounge.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00- It's not cut off. It's not totally open-plan, but...- I like this.

0:15:00 > 0:15:05That definitely sounds like approval, but could they see themselves living here?

0:15:05 > 0:15:09- It's got a nice feel to it. It feels like a home.- Definitely.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12- I like it.- It's very light. - What do you think, Kas?

0:15:12 > 0:15:18- I like it. It's nice and it's quite quiet.- It's not far from the train station if we work in the city.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21Have the Watts found their ideal Aussie home?

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- What's there?- The bedroom. - The bedroom...

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- Hmm...- It's quite big, a good size.

0:15:31 > 0:15:37- Oh, you've got a bath and a shower unit.- Really?- Yeah. - Let's have a look.- That's good.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40I really like this one.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42You've got another bedroom in here.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44With another full-length mirror.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47- Oh, wow, I like that wall!- Yeah?

0:15:47 > 0:15:50The Watts are taken by this house,

0:15:50 > 0:15:55but could they afford to call it home on a rental budget of around £850?

0:15:57 > 0:16:02- I really like the house, so I think it will be expensive. - You've got expensive taste.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04I'm excited about this one.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Oh, no way! That's cheaper than I thought.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13- I think it's good.- Happy?- Yeah. - You'd stretch to that?- Definitely.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17If we could stretch to that, that would be fantastic.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20- Paper round is needed. - You can chip in with a paper round.

0:16:20 > 0:16:25This house has really boosted James's hopes of convincing Farah and Kas.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29Can the last property make Australia an even more appealing proposition?

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Also in Cleveland, it's a larger three-bedroom property.

0:16:32 > 0:16:37Just a short walk from the sea, the location should suit them.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Hopefully, the house will too.

0:16:39 > 0:16:45- It looks all right, doesn't it? - I don't know. It's very built up, I think.- It's really modern.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Let's have a look inside the house.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52Farah already sounds uncertain, but James is staying positive.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55He knows he has to sell Australian living.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58A big, big...sort of living area.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02- Oh... It's not very light, is it? - No, it is a bit dark.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05But they've got a courtyard out the back here.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09- That's quite nice. - With some palm trees. That's nice.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Plenty of greenery in the back.

0:17:11 > 0:17:16- But then it's quite built up. - It's not very big, though, in the back yard.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20I think that's a perfect size. You can get your table and chairs there.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23You can have a barbecue over there. That's fine.

0:17:23 > 0:17:28- Where are you going to stick your hot tub?- You don't need a hot tub. You need a cold tub!- Yeah.

0:17:28 > 0:17:34James has Kas on board, but Farah is struggling with the idea of living in such a built-up location.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38I don't like it because it's quite dark. It's not for me.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Perhaps the upstairs can show this house in a more favourable light.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Oh, wow!

0:17:46 > 0:17:48- It has a balcony, James.- Yes.

0:17:48 > 0:17:54You could have your breakfast on there. You have the courtyard there and this doubles your outside space.

0:17:54 > 0:17:59- I like the balcony.- I can tell! Do you want to see in the other room?- Yeah.

0:17:59 > 0:18:06The large bedroom and brighter feel upstairs have lightened Farah's mood and there's good news for Kas.

0:18:06 > 0:18:12- So this would be Kas's room. - Yeah, with a patio.- Oh, wow, Kas! - And this one's got an en-suite.

0:18:12 > 0:18:17- No way!- This house is starting to appeal a bit more now.

0:18:17 > 0:18:22Everyone has been taken by this property, but could they handle living in a built-up area?

0:18:22 > 0:18:26Perhaps finding out the price will make that decision for them.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29OK, you turn it over.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32£1,100 a month.

0:18:32 > 0:18:37That would mean stretching themselves well over their budget.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41That's a lot of money, though, for like rental properties.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- But think about the house, how big is this house.- Hmm.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48If you're having people coming over, it's worth the extra.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50It's a pity about the rain.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54I think it makes it look quite nice.

0:18:54 > 0:19:00Well, despite the weather, Australian properties have given James a ray of hope.

0:19:00 > 0:19:05It started badly with the current tenants of the first house.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07The second had everything they needed,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10just the ticket for James's dream.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13The third house set the standards even higher,

0:19:13 > 0:19:16although affording it could be a struggle.

0:19:16 > 0:19:21So have the Watts seen enough to make them fall for Aussie houses?

0:19:22 > 0:19:26After seeing the properties today, it's time to make a vote.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35- UK.- Australia.- Australia.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37I kind of liked the houses.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39- Did you?- Yeah.- Oh.

0:19:39 > 0:19:45- I liked the one with the white picket fence. Very homely.- Yeah, it was a nice house.- Definitely.

0:19:45 > 0:19:51I've not found a house as good as the one that we've got in England.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53It needs to be next to the seaside.

0:19:56 > 0:20:01The Watts may have liked Aussie houses, but for Farah, there's no place like home.

0:20:01 > 0:20:06And finding a property close to the beach will mean paying even higher rental prices

0:20:06 > 0:20:12which puts the pressure on both of them to find good work opportunities and salaries in Brisbane.

0:20:12 > 0:20:19Farah works part-time teaching English to foreign students and James is a youth worker.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22As they could only get a visa on Farah's job,

0:20:22 > 0:20:26everything depends on her being able to find suitable employment,

0:20:26 > 0:20:30so we've arranged for Farah to visit a language school in Brisbane.

0:20:30 > 0:20:37Unfortunately, the journey into the city has reminded her why she lives in the countryside.

0:20:37 > 0:20:43Just all the daily hustle and bustle that I do not want in my life.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46And if we move here to Australia,

0:20:46 > 0:20:50I have to accept that being the visa applicant,

0:20:50 > 0:20:57it's got to be something that I've got to take on board and I don't know if I'm willing to do that.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01That's not what I'd call a good start to a working day.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06She's meeting ex-pat Tom Entwistle who is a languages teacher.

0:21:06 > 0:21:12Tom is going to let her help with a lesson. It should be a good chance for Farah to show her skills.

0:21:12 > 0:21:18I want to focus on some medical problems today, so illnesses, injuries.

0:21:18 > 0:21:23- It should be a nice, communicative activity. Is this the kind of thing you're used to?- Yes.

0:21:23 > 0:21:28When I was in Malta, this is the kind of thing you did and it was the same sort of set-up.

0:21:30 > 0:21:37Then they're off into the classroom. As the visa is down to Farah, it's crucial she likes what she sees.

0:21:40 > 0:21:46Meanwhile, with Kas looked after by a childminder, James is on his way to find out

0:21:46 > 0:21:50about his job prospects. But he knows it's all about Farah.

0:21:50 > 0:21:55All the elements on this trip are crucial, but today especially.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58If Farah's not happy with work then we don't come.

0:21:58 > 0:22:04Everything else can be right, but if she's not happy working, it just won't happen.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06So that's the end of it.

0:22:06 > 0:22:12He's come to the Child Protection Services to find out what Brisbane could offer him as a youth worker.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- Just take a seat.- Thank you.

0:22:15 > 0:22:20- Hello, James.- Hi, mate. - Lovely to meet you. My name's Chris.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- Nice to meet you. - Come on through.- Thank you.

0:22:23 > 0:22:30I noticed on your CV here that you've got some experience in working with children in care

0:22:30 > 0:22:35- and providing support work.- Yeah. - Can you tell me a bit about that?

0:22:35 > 0:22:42I worked providing residential care to children in a residential setting.

0:22:42 > 0:22:48- So ranging from mainly single-bedded crisis units.- Mm-hm.

0:22:48 > 0:22:54While Chris gets to question James in detail, Farah gets the chance to do the same with Tom

0:22:54 > 0:22:56on her prospects.

0:22:56 > 0:23:01That was really good. Very similar to my experience in Malta. That's great.

0:23:01 > 0:23:07- I find that very comfortable. I'd be quite happy to teach.- This is something you could do?- Definitely.

0:23:07 > 0:23:12What's the kind of wages that I could potentially earn?

0:23:12 > 0:23:17I work a 20-hour week and I take home about... 50,000 a year,

0:23:17 > 0:23:24which is kind of an average wage in Australia. You're not going to make a fortune, but plenty to live on.

0:23:24 > 0:23:30- Let me get this right. 20 hours a week, 50,000. - A lot better than in England.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34That's £32,000 - over double what Farah earns in the UK.

0:23:34 > 0:23:41How many schools are there, not only in Brisbane, but just around Australia?

0:23:41 > 0:23:44It is a huge industry in Australia.

0:23:44 > 0:23:52It's not as big as it was a few years ago. Various changes mean less students are coming now.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57How difficult do you think it would be for me, with my qualifications?

0:23:57 > 0:24:02- I'm sure there are ways, but you'd find it quite difficult. - That is a blow.

0:24:02 > 0:24:07Despite the promising wages, Farah might struggle to find work

0:24:07 > 0:24:10and it could affect the entire move.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12If that's the case,

0:24:12 > 0:24:18unfortunately, there's absolutely no way that we can get into Australia.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21There is work out here.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23It's just finding the...

0:24:23 > 0:24:28the employer to give me a job.

0:24:28 > 0:24:33Across town, James is also finding out just what his job would offer.

0:24:33 > 0:24:40- How much do you think I could earn a year?- With your experience, you'd be Level 5.

0:24:40 > 0:24:45- That's 45,000 a year.- Right. - If you were able to get into an AO3 position,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48that pay starts at 52,000 a year.

0:24:48 > 0:24:54Roughly, that would work out to about £35,000-£40,000 per year.

0:24:54 > 0:24:59- That's pretty good. Pretty good. - That is welcome news.

0:24:59 > 0:25:04Even the starting salary would be nearly £8,000 more than James currently earns.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08- Is that one big step closer to his dream?- I'm hoping that

0:25:08 > 0:25:12because I can find work that's relatively well paid,

0:25:12 > 0:25:16it will take the pressure off her to be the only breadwinner.

0:25:16 > 0:25:23And I'm hoping that will help persuade her that we could come here and have a better life.

0:25:23 > 0:25:30So after a day of mixed fortunes, how will Farah and James vote when it comes to work?

0:25:35 > 0:25:38- Australia!- Australia!

0:25:39 > 0:25:42Well, I really liked the job,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45so, um...and the money.

0:25:45 > 0:25:50- So that'll be great.- Fantastic. I'm very happy about that.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53- Well done. - That's the result James wanted,

0:25:53 > 0:25:57but Farah has serious worries about where she'd be working.

0:25:57 > 0:26:04Australia is so big and what I've seen of it I really don't like at the moment.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07That's because you're in the city.

0:26:07 > 0:26:13To come somewhere that you don't really want to come is a big sacrifice for you. I know that.

0:26:13 > 0:26:19You know, it's whether you're happy with us changing our lifestyle completely.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23I don't know if I'm going to sacrifice...

0:26:25 > 0:26:27..all that,

0:26:27 > 0:26:29for this.

0:26:30 > 0:26:35I understand, obviously, this is something that you really want.

0:26:53 > 0:26:58Despite a vote for Oz, Farah's still struggling with the positives,

0:26:58 > 0:27:04but for James it's all about living the lifestyle he fell in love with 10 years ago.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09Showing Kasim and Farah what that means could be vital if he's to win them over.

0:27:09 > 0:27:16In the UK, the Watts all lead an active life, making the most of the Cornish countryside.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19We thoroughly enjoy the outdoors.

0:27:19 > 0:27:25- I love running, cycling... - Rock climbing you're good at. - Climbing.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29All summer, we're down the beach playing around in the water,

0:27:29 > 0:27:36- but come October, end of October... - It's hibernate.- It's hibernate until spring again.

0:27:38 > 0:27:43So today, with a forecast for rain, they've come to spend time at a local climbing centre.

0:27:43 > 0:27:48It's one activity they enjoy doing as a family.

0:28:00 > 0:28:06- Leap for it, James. - Do you think he can leap? Like a gazelle?

0:28:06 > 0:28:12Well, there's no fear of heights in this family, is there? And, by chance,

0:28:12 > 0:28:17Farah has met someone who emigrated from Cornwall. Matt doesn't regret making the move.

0:28:17 > 0:28:23- It's warm enough to be swimming in a pair of shorts in winter.- Wow. - The sky is as blue as blue can be.

0:28:23 > 0:28:29- That's just all appealing. - You feel like you're on a beach at Newquay in summer. It's heaven.

0:28:29 > 0:28:36- I love scuba diving.- Cool, yeah. - It's some of the best you'll see. You've got the Barrier Reef.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40- God, you've been converted! - You have to do it!

0:28:40 > 0:28:44- Stay for six months. - It's just leaving everybody behind.

0:28:44 > 0:28:48- It's just...- It's difficult. - ..leaving that lifestyle I've got.

0:28:48 > 0:28:54Farah's concerns about moving away from those she loves are on her mind but for James,

0:28:54 > 0:28:58despite the weather, this is what Australia's all about.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01This is something we've done in the past as a family,

0:29:01 > 0:29:07so to see the facilities here on a wet day is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

0:29:07 > 0:29:12We've got something to do. Kas was happy, I'm happy, Farah's happy. Thumbs up.

0:29:14 > 0:29:20And when the rain has cleared, there's just enough time for a spot of fishing.

0:29:20 > 0:29:26The chance to reflect in tranquil surroundings has got James thinking about Farah's heartache.

0:29:26 > 0:29:32In Cornwall, she's just felt like it's home. And once you feel that somewhere is home,

0:29:32 > 0:29:36it's very difficult for you to want to leave.

0:29:36 > 0:29:41I felt 10 years ago that this was home and I've spent that time trying to get back,

0:29:41 > 0:29:43so I can understand how she feels.

0:29:48 > 0:29:53If Farah doesn't vote to come out here to Australia, or doesn't want to,

0:29:53 > 0:29:59- I don't know where that will lead us.- So when it comes to the lifestyle on offer,

0:29:59 > 0:30:01will it be Australia or Cornwall?

0:30:03 > 0:30:07We've had a great day today and now it's time to vote.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16- Australia!- Australia!- Australia!

0:30:18 > 0:30:23I thoroughly enjoyed that. The wall was so much better than the UK.

0:30:23 > 0:30:28And if I was to work in Brisbane, then it's kind of close.

0:30:28 > 0:30:34- We can all go on the weekend and we can...- It's looking up.- Yeah.

0:30:37 > 0:30:42A full house of votes is a huge boost for James's dreams of emigrating,

0:30:42 > 0:30:48but with question marks over their finances, this isn't just about proving they could have a life here.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51It's about proving they could afford it.

0:30:51 > 0:30:57We've drawn up a comparison of costs between how they live in Cornwall and life in Australia.

0:30:57 > 0:31:04- Where will their calculations lead them?- Right, groceries per month. How much?

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Mushrooms are way expensive here!

0:31:06 > 0:31:10Wow. That's five times more expensive.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14- Shampoo... - For 500 mils of shampoo.

0:31:14 > 0:31:19Jeez, we're going to have to shop around for that or all go round with bald heads.

0:31:22 > 0:31:27So that works out as... £554 per month.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30£95 more expensive.

0:31:30 > 0:31:37And there's another £200 a month rent to add if they use the second property in the calculations.

0:31:37 > 0:31:41Can their income make up the difference?

0:31:41 > 0:31:48No way! We're going to earn twice the amount of money here, in pounds, than we'd earn in England.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54- That's actually really good. - I'm astonished.

0:31:54 > 0:31:59That's a huge leap in salary. So what's the bottom line?

0:31:59 > 0:32:04- We've got a surplus...- Wow! - ..of £1,309.

0:32:04 > 0:32:09- Pounds, not even dollars. - Are you sure we've done this right?

0:32:09 > 0:32:10Yes.

0:32:10 > 0:32:16We could save £1,000 a month. Is that more encouraging for you to come out here?

0:32:16 > 0:32:22Well, it's really good. I mean, the money is really good. We'll see.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25Eh? We'll see. That's a good result.

0:32:25 > 0:32:32On paper, these figures do look promising, but have James and Farah really been convinced?

0:32:32 > 0:32:36We've done our cost of living and now it's time to vote.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43- Australia!- Australia!

0:32:43 > 0:32:47- Obviously.- Yay!- After finding we'd be richer.- Yeah, definitely.

0:32:47 > 0:32:52- More money to spend for you.- Yeah. - Shopping.- Buying shampoo.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02It looks as if Australia could make financial sense for the Watts after all.

0:33:02 > 0:33:06Farah's second vote for Oz is even better news for James.

0:33:06 > 0:33:11What could swing the big decision now is finding out if Kasim could be happy there, too.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Two years ago, they tried moving to Malta,

0:33:15 > 0:33:20but it didn't go well and the Watts returned to Cornwall.

0:33:20 > 0:33:26Kas and James have a very strong bond and it's really nice to see them getting on.

0:33:26 > 0:33:32And when we were in Malta, that kind of changed. He wasn't doing what he wanted to do

0:33:32 > 0:33:34and his personality changed.

0:33:34 > 0:33:42He really didn't get on there at school, to the point where his behaviour was deteriorating

0:33:42 > 0:33:47at home, you know. That was a major issue for us. We knew he was happy at school here.

0:33:47 > 0:33:52So today Kasim is getting the chance to spend time at a local school.

0:33:52 > 0:33:57How he feels about the day is crucial to the entire move.

0:33:57 > 0:34:02I'd like you to meet Kas. He's a student from the UK.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05"What does half-life mean?" Do you know this stuff?

0:34:05 > 0:34:13Basically, in half the life of the object, how much radioactivity it gives off.

0:34:13 > 0:34:18Yeah, we've got the questions on the board. Just got to answer them.

0:34:18 > 0:34:25Kas certainly seems to be getting to grips with the lesson, even with an anxious mum keeping a close eye.

0:34:25 > 0:34:31With the lesson soon over, there's plenty of questions for Kas.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35- Do you have yellow buses? - No, red.- Oh, the big double ones.

0:34:35 > 0:34:42That's in London. We've got one in Cornwall that goes round Truro. That's a tourist bus.

0:34:42 > 0:34:48- Do you do a lot of outdoor activities? - You get to do classes in sports.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52One of your classes, three times a week, is a sport.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55That's great news for outdoor-loving Kas.

0:34:55 > 0:35:01When he meets up with Farah and James, they're keen to find out how he got on.

0:35:01 > 0:35:06- Hi.- How was it? You're smiling. - Yeah, it was actually quite fun.

0:35:06 > 0:35:12The class was nice. It was good. So it was not too bad. It was quite relaxing.

0:35:12 > 0:35:17- So if we moved out here, you'd be quite happy to go to school?- Yeah.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20- Definitely.- That's really good.

0:35:24 > 0:35:30Seeing Kasim happy and making friends in an Aussie school is reassuring for Farah and James,

0:35:30 > 0:35:35but Farah's biggest fear has never been that Australia can't offer them a future.

0:35:35 > 0:35:39It's about leaving behind the people and places they love.

0:35:39 > 0:35:44We've prepared a DVD of messages from family and friends in the UK.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49- Could hearing these make moving unthinkable?- Ready, Kas?- Yep.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52- Ready?- Go for it.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56Hiya, James. Hiya, Farah. Hiya, Kas.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58I hope you're having a good time.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01'Hello. How are you?'

0:36:01 > 0:36:05I hope you're enjoying yourselves down there in Australia.

0:36:05 > 0:36:10With James and Farah, I don't think you'll ever have a dull moment!

0:36:11 > 0:36:14'Farah has been a wonderful friend.'

0:36:14 > 0:36:20She's one of these spontaneous, bubbly people that will just go, "Hi! Are you there?

0:36:20 > 0:36:23"Shall we go out for a walk? Yay!"

0:36:23 > 0:36:28She's a livewire. She's always on the go.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31She's bubbly. I call her my little pint pot!

0:36:31 > 0:36:35Don't tell her that!

0:36:35 > 0:36:38Kas is a very thoughtful person.

0:36:38 > 0:36:43He's obviously got lots of friends and hobbies in England.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47Being a teenager, it may be the most difficult for him to move.

0:36:47 > 0:36:54I do worry about this move that they're making because I'm not sure

0:36:54 > 0:36:58that Farah and Kas would... settle there.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01They'll miss the country so much.

0:37:01 > 0:37:08It'll be difficult for when we do have our family time together at Christmas, holidays, birthdays.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12It will be a big part that's missing.

0:37:12 > 0:37:17We do have some really good laughs and good times.

0:37:18 > 0:37:24I want them to be happy. I really do want them to be happy and to enjoy their life,

0:37:24 > 0:37:28but it's...it's so far. It's just so far.

0:37:31 > 0:37:36My only grandson is going to the other side of the world. Yes.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39I think I'd be heartbroken.

0:37:43 > 0:37:48I love you guys. Kas, just decide what you want to do as well. It's all for you as well.

0:37:48 > 0:37:53Everyone's got to be happy with the decision.

0:37:53 > 0:37:59If you do decide to go there, I'll miss you immensely, but it's your life.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03And if it's what you want to do, then I'll be happy for you.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05But...

0:38:05 > 0:38:09don't think I won't miss you cos I will.

0:38:10 > 0:38:11It's just...

0:38:11 > 0:38:15Oh, please, please, think about it.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21It's not for me.

0:38:23 > 0:38:28- It's just so far, James. - It's a day.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31- It's one day. - Yes, I know it's one day,

0:38:31 > 0:38:37but you're just forgetting how far it is, how regularly we would see them.

0:38:37 > 0:38:42- I know...- And how often they would come and see us. - No, I understand the logistics.

0:38:42 > 0:38:50But the logistics aren't putting me off from living somewhere that I'd really like to live.

0:38:50 > 0:38:55I don't know. I don't know if this is the place for me. So...

0:38:55 > 0:38:56OK.

0:38:57 > 0:39:04Watching their messages was a reminder of just how painful emigrating would be for the Watts.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08They know full well what can happen when a move doesn't work out.

0:39:08 > 0:39:12So after seeing how much they can gain and lose by moving to Australia,

0:39:12 > 0:39:16are the family prepared to risk everything all over again?

0:39:18 > 0:39:22This week has been driven by James' dream of a new life in Australia.

0:39:22 > 0:39:28Now, as they approach the final vote, there is still a lot to think about.

0:39:28 > 0:39:32For some reason, he thinks there's this one magical place

0:39:32 > 0:39:38that he'll kind of say to me it's OK to miss all of our friends,

0:39:38 > 0:39:41it's OK to miss all our family.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47You know, just with this one place.

0:39:48 > 0:39:53After watching the videos, our family and friends,

0:39:53 > 0:39:58up until that point I think Farah could have voted Australia,

0:39:58 > 0:40:02but I think after seeing the video of family and friends,

0:40:02 > 0:40:09it really hit her what she'd be leaving behind. That might just nudge it back to England.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Well, I've got my dream. You know, being in Cornwall is my dream.

0:40:13 > 0:40:19You know, we're living in a beautiful house, next to the sea,

0:40:19 > 0:40:21within walking distance.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25I get to go on walks with my friends.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29You know, we're only at the end of a phone call.

0:40:29 > 0:40:34My mum's probably the hardest person to persuade.

0:40:34 > 0:40:41If she doesn't like it, it's no good. If I don't like it, then my mum's not going to like it.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44And James just can't do it.

0:40:44 > 0:40:49So it's... a bit of a chain reaction, really.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52It's really, really difficult. What do I do?

0:40:52 > 0:40:59Do I sacrifice everything that I've got over in the UK just to make HIS dream come true?

0:40:59 > 0:41:02Can we give this a go?

0:41:02 > 0:41:04I don't know.

0:41:04 > 0:41:09So with their future on the line, what's the verdict?

0:41:10 > 0:41:16After our exciting, interesting week in Australia, it's now time to vote.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28Australia!

0:41:28 > 0:41:30Australia!

0:41:30 > 0:41:32Australia!

0:41:32 > 0:41:34YES!

0:41:36 > 0:41:39Family hug.

0:41:39 > 0:41:43- Big hugs. - I'm prepared to give it a go.

0:41:43 > 0:41:49I'm going to pass out! I did not think you would do that. I thought no chance.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56I've had lots to think about.

0:41:56 > 0:42:01Seeing Kas today at school, that was kind of a tick for me.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05So, yeah, I think that kind of swayed my...

0:42:05 > 0:42:07..my vote.

0:42:07 > 0:42:14I think Australia got my vote from the start because of the weather, the wildlife, et cetera.

0:42:14 > 0:42:21- The fishing.- With everybody else, with all my friends and family and stuff,

0:42:22 > 0:42:25I'm sure they can come and visit.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27If not, live here.

0:42:27 > 0:42:32I'm over the moon. I'm not leaving now until you've got your visa.

0:42:35 > 0:42:40There's something about Australia that makes you want to come back.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42I think.

0:42:50 > 0:42:56After plenty of soul-searching, the Watts have chosen to make a new start in Australia,

0:42:56 > 0:42:58much to James' delight.

0:42:58 > 0:43:05There's still some work for them to do before that life can begin, but we wish them a very happy future.
