0:00:02 > 0:00:05Moving halfway around the world to start a new life seems drastic
0:00:05 > 0:00:09but if you genuinely believed it was the best option for your young
0:00:09 > 0:00:11family, you might be tempted.
0:00:11 > 0:00:15The problem is, leaving behind everyone you know and love
0:00:15 > 0:00:18could be the toughest challenge you will ever face.
0:00:19 > 0:00:23The Randles are struggling to balance work and family life.
0:00:23 > 0:00:25We work constantly.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28At the minute, we just feel like two single parents
0:00:28 > 0:00:30just living under the same roof.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Gemma believes Australia is the answer
0:00:32 > 0:00:35and a week down under doesn't disappoint.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Oh, my God!
0:00:37 > 0:00:40I'm absolutely speechless. Look at this!
0:00:40 > 0:00:43- Look, you've got your own bar.- Yes.
0:00:43 > 0:00:47I cannot believe that we could potentially live somewhere like this.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52But the heartache of taking her children away
0:00:52 > 0:00:54from their grandparents has her torn.
0:00:55 > 0:00:59We could have an OK life here and make my mum and dad happy
0:00:59 > 0:01:04or we can go over there and just break people's hearts.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32Thanks to one of the lowest population densities in the world,
0:01:32 > 0:01:35it's no surprise so many Brits flock
0:01:35 > 0:01:39to Australian shores every year in search of a better life.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43Today, the country has over one million UK-born residents.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45But it doesn't work out for everyone.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48For some, the pull of home is too much
0:01:48 > 0:01:51and many return to the UK with their dream in tatters.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55The Randles face a massive dilemma.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58Gemma believes Australia could offer her family the time together
0:01:58 > 0:02:01they desperately need but Chris worries that
0:02:01 > 0:02:05abandoning their life in the UK is too big a risk.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08For the next week, they'll sample everything Aussie living has to
0:02:08 > 0:02:12offer before making a decision that will change their lives for ever.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17By the time they touch down in Adelaide,
0:02:17 > 0:02:21the family have travelled more than 10,000 miles.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24And 26 hours in the air has given Gemma time to think through
0:02:24 > 0:02:27the enormity of the choice ahead.
0:02:27 > 0:02:32I think it's just made me realise how far we are from home.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34But it hasn't put her off.
0:02:34 > 0:02:35I'm excited.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39I just want to get going and see what it's all about
0:02:39 > 0:02:43and hope that it's everything that I think it's going to be.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45Chris, however, doesn't share her enthusiasm.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49I'm a bit nervous that Gemma's got real high expectations
0:02:49 > 0:02:52and we might find out that it's not quite what
0:02:52 > 0:02:55we want or what you think it's going to be. So, we'll see.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59Gemma has just one week to quell Chris's doubts or kiss her
0:02:59 > 0:03:01sunshine dream goodbye for ever.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03Oh, feel the heat!
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Back in the UK, the Randles live in Aldridge in the West Midlands.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12They are Chris, Maddie, aged three,
0:03:12 > 0:03:15wife Gemma and Oliver, who's nearly two.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20Their desire to move down under has been a burning passion
0:03:20 > 0:03:24ever since Gemma and Chris first got together.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26When me and Chris met eight years ago,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29we both said how much we'd love to go to Australia
0:03:29 > 0:03:33and what started as, "We'd love to go to Australia,"
0:03:33 > 0:03:36turned into how much we'd love to live in Australia.
0:03:36 > 0:03:41Unfortunately, we lost my nan quite suddenly
0:03:41 > 0:03:46and I decided I wanted to stay here and be with my family.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48And then we got married
0:03:48 > 0:03:54and we kind of settled down and we had our children and while they were
0:03:54 > 0:03:57so small we didn't really feel that was the time to be looking into it.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00But now, with a young family to support,
0:04:00 > 0:04:03Gemma thinks their jobs are destroying their family life.
0:04:03 > 0:04:07'We don't have time to spend as a family at the moment.
0:04:07 > 0:04:11'I mean, even to the point of sitting down and watching a film together.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14'We just don't...do not have the time'
0:04:14 > 0:04:19to be able to do anything like that and it's sad.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23'We're pushed so much in this country and driven by goals and
0:04:23 > 0:04:25'targets and rushing here, there and everywhere all the time.'
0:04:25 > 0:04:28For Gemma, Australia is the obvious solution.
0:04:28 > 0:04:33They don't seem to have a hundred-million-mile-an-hour pace
0:04:33 > 0:04:34of life over there.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38Everything seems to just be a bit more chilled out
0:04:38 > 0:04:40and that massively appeals to me.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43But while Chris wants a better work/life balance,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46he also loves his job.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48As both a PE teacher and head of house,
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Chris is in charge of the pastoral care or welfare of students -
0:04:52 > 0:04:54a role which is very important to him.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57I'm currently working in the biggest school in the UK.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59The children are split across four different house groups.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01I'm in charge of one house group
0:05:01 > 0:05:03and therefore responsible for 450 pupils,
0:05:03 > 0:05:06which equates to about half of a normal school, really.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14'It does bring quite a lot of challenges throughout the day
0:05:14 > 0:05:17'but I do really enjoy the pastoral side.'
0:05:17 > 0:05:19That is the biggest part of my job which
0:05:19 > 0:05:20I do find quite rewarding.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24And Gemma knows it's going to be a challenge to get him to start again.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27For him to give that up and go over there
0:05:27 > 0:05:32and not enjoy his job would make me feel awful.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35Despite this, Gemma feels spending more time with their children
0:05:35 > 0:05:38is so important it's a sacrifice worth making.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42'We didn't have children for other people to bring them up.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45'You know, that's not what we want.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48'We want our children to see us as a united front,'
0:05:48 > 0:05:53not seeing Daddy on one day and seeing Mummy on the other days.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57It's... You know, we want that family time.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01But spending more time with Maddie and Oliver risks taking them
0:06:01 > 0:06:04away from their grandparents and that hasn't gone down well.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07It has caused quite a bit of... quite a lot of upset, really.
0:06:07 > 0:06:11In particular, Gemma's mum has really took the news really badly,
0:06:11 > 0:06:14- you know, and it has hit her really hard.- You feel torn.
0:06:14 > 0:06:19We could stay here, we could have a really, you know, an OK life here
0:06:19 > 0:06:26and make my mum and dad happy or we can go over there and break...
0:06:27 > 0:06:28Just...
0:06:35 > 0:06:37SHE SOBS
0:06:39 > 0:06:41Just break people's hearts.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44But give the kids a better life.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49Gemma's completely torn between becoming the parent
0:06:49 > 0:06:52she dreams of and leaving hers behind.
0:06:52 > 0:06:53She doesn't want to upset her parents.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56I completely understand that cos I'm in the same position
0:06:56 > 0:06:59with my parents, you know, and it is tough.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03'But they've got to understand that we're doing it for good reasons.'
0:07:03 > 0:07:06We want a better life and we want a better life for our kids.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08I can't look back in ten years and think,
0:07:08 > 0:07:12"What if we'd have given it a go and possibly been able to have
0:07:12 > 0:07:14"a better life over there?"
0:07:14 > 0:07:18To me, it's worth the risk giving that a go.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23Gemma hopes Australia will offer the family the time together
0:07:23 > 0:07:24they desperately need.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28But after just one week of sampling everything Australia can offer,
0:07:28 > 0:07:31they'll face the biggest decision of their lives - whether to give up
0:07:31 > 0:07:36work and move the children away from the family or stay put in the UK.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41For their trial week, the Randles are staying in Glandore,
0:07:41 > 0:07:45a well-established suburb 15 minutes from Adelaide city centre.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48With plenty of parks and playgrounds, there's lots of
0:07:48 > 0:07:51family-friendly places for the Randles to spend time together.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Their temporary home is this three-bedroom cottage
0:07:55 > 0:07:58and Gemma's first impressions are positive.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00It's a really good size.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02- What've you found? - I love the high ceilings.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05But the kitchen's not ideal.
0:08:05 > 0:08:06It's small.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09It's got everything we need.
0:08:09 > 0:08:13I couldn't live...in...with this kitchen.
0:08:13 > 0:08:18I couldn't live with it but it's perfect for a week.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20I think, at the moment, if we had to choose to come over
0:08:20 > 0:08:23and live in a property like this, I wouldn't be very keen.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26And Chris is already concerned about his work prospects.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29'I'm quite apprehensive, really. I'm quite nervous.'
0:08:29 > 0:08:31We've driven past a couple of schools on the way in.
0:08:31 > 0:08:34They look very different. So I'm a little bit nervous about it, really.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36But Gemma's staying positive.
0:08:36 > 0:08:41The sun's shining and, you know, we can't wait to get to the beach
0:08:41 > 0:08:43and have a look round.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45We've only come from the airport to the house
0:08:45 > 0:08:50and already I can see the benefits from us spending that time together.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53I think Gemma's really excited about the week ahead.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56I think she's very much certain that it's going to be for us
0:08:56 > 0:08:58and that we're going to like it
0:08:58 > 0:09:01and that we're going to move over here straightaway, however,
0:09:01 > 0:09:03I'm a bit more sceptical, really, at the moment,
0:09:03 > 0:09:05a bit more dubious.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07Maddie and Oliver may have settled in well
0:09:07 > 0:09:10but Dad's going to need some serious convincing
0:09:10 > 0:09:13if Australia is to become the family's home for good.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Back in the UK, the Randles live in this modern three-bedroom
0:09:19 > 0:09:23semidetached house in Aldridge in the West Midlands.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26- We moved in, what, four years ago?- Yeah.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28When we first got married and stuff.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31In the last year or so, we've started doing some work to it
0:09:31 > 0:09:34and it's turned into more of a home now, isn't it, really,
0:09:34 > 0:09:35rather than a house?
0:09:35 > 0:09:39It is everything that we want from a home and we've spent a long time
0:09:39 > 0:09:43building it up but I'm hoping that,
0:09:43 > 0:09:46in Australia, we'll be able to get more.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48Affording the dream home in Australia would
0:09:48 > 0:09:52depend on getting the full value they expect from their UK property.
0:09:52 > 0:09:56I'm quite hopeful that we get something in the region
0:09:56 > 0:09:59of 205,000-210,000.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Gemma and Chris already have some savings from the sale
0:10:02 > 0:10:06of Gemma's beauty business so, with a total budget of £300,000,
0:10:06 > 0:10:09one thing's definitely on the wish list.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12One of the biggest factors is the spare room. You know, we're moving.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14We're moving away from our family. We want that spare room there.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16The four bedrooms is vitally important
0:10:16 > 0:10:18cos we want people to come and stop with us.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21That definitely is the deal-breaker for me
0:10:21 > 0:10:26- if we can't afford that fourth bedroom.- The house is a big thing.
0:10:26 > 0:10:31I think if we don't get the right house then it'll certainly
0:10:31 > 0:10:33put me off moving. Yeah, definitely.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38Finding the ideal home in Australia, within budget,
0:10:38 > 0:10:41could make or break Gemma's dream.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Today, we'll show the couple three properties in the Adelaide area,
0:10:44 > 0:10:48based on what their needs and wants are for an Aussie home.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Only after seeing each property will the couple discover how much
0:10:51 > 0:10:56they cost. House-hunting begins in Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00It's a thriving community 23 miles east of Adelaide.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02With good transport links to the city centre
0:11:02 > 0:11:05and plenty of nearby facilities for young families,
0:11:05 > 0:11:08it could be the ideal location for the Randles.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12With four bedrooms, this house could be perfect for them, too.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16And Gemma's impressed before she's even out of the car.
0:11:16 > 0:11:17SHE SQUEALS
0:11:17 > 0:11:21- Wow!- This looks nice, doesn't it? - Oh, wow!
0:11:21 > 0:11:25Look at this! Wow!
0:11:25 > 0:11:27Go on, then, you go first.
0:11:27 > 0:11:28SHE GASPS
0:11:28 > 0:11:34Oh, my God! Oh, my God, this is amazing!
0:11:34 > 0:11:36I think she likes it(!)
0:11:36 > 0:11:40- I think I've seen something. - Do you think you've seen something?
0:11:40 > 0:11:42Just come back for a minute, mate.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44CHILDREN CHATTER EXCITEDLY
0:11:44 > 0:11:49Oh, my goodness. Who's... Oh, it's got a walk-in wardrobe!
0:11:49 > 0:11:51That's it. That's sold then, isn't it?
0:11:51 > 0:11:52GEMMA LAUGHS
0:11:52 > 0:11:56- My God. It's got a toilet, Mummy. - It's got a toilet!
0:11:56 > 0:11:59Even the basics are getting a reaction.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02Just in case you need a wee-wee.
0:12:02 > 0:12:03THEY LAUGH
0:12:04 > 0:12:09- Can we move in now?- It depends if we can afford it, doesn't it, really?
0:12:09 > 0:12:13This is everything that we wanted and more.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15I don't want to get too excited in case it's too expensive.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19- Stop being so practical. - It's right though, isn't it?
0:12:19 > 0:12:23- We've got to be able to afford it. - I could live in this wardrobe.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25Oh, my God, they've got a beauty room.
0:12:27 > 0:12:31Is this house just made for us?
0:12:31 > 0:12:34Gemma's on a real high with this house.
0:12:34 > 0:12:35Oh!
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Oh, my God!
0:12:37 > 0:12:39Just... I'm absolutely speechless.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46- In fact, I'm going to cry.- Don't.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51I cannot believe that we could potentially live somewhere like this.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57You could do in England, if you can afford it.
0:12:57 > 0:13:02He's playing it safe but even Chris is enthused by what lies outside.
0:13:02 > 0:13:03God, look at this!
0:13:03 > 0:13:06Look, you've got your own bar!
0:13:06 > 0:13:08I can have my own bar, my own barbecue.
0:13:08 > 0:13:10- Job's a good 'un.- I love it!
0:13:10 > 0:13:14And Gemma can already picture having friends round.
0:13:14 > 0:13:19Oh, my God. Can you imagine Paul and Carla and everyone?
0:13:19 > 0:13:22That's really sad that they couldn't actually...
0:13:24 > 0:13:28..pop over and enjoy it with us, I suppose.
0:13:28 > 0:13:31Remembering how far from home they are has brought Gemma
0:13:31 > 0:13:35back down to earth with a bump, but only briefly.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37I'd move in now.
0:13:37 > 0:13:41I would. If... I'd sell everything and live in this house.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43And even Chris appears sold.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45The location's perfect. It's nice and quiet.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48I think it's worth moving for this if you can afford it.
0:13:48 > 0:13:50That's a great start
0:13:50 > 0:13:55but will it be within reach of the couple's £300,000 budget?
0:13:55 > 0:13:58I think it might be bang on our budget.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00I think it's bang on 300,000.
0:14:00 > 0:14:05- What do you think?- I'm going to say 350, then.- Oh, God!
0:14:05 > 0:14:08- OK. Shall we have a look? - Yeah, go on, then.
0:14:18 > 0:14:22Yeah, I thought so. It's...
0:14:22 > 0:14:24It's expensive, isn't it?
0:14:24 > 0:14:29- It might be that this is 345 but that's it.- Yeah.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31We haven't got to spend any more.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34Whereas we might get a house that's 100 grand cheaper
0:14:34 > 0:14:36but have to spend 50 on it.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38A lot will depend on how much we can earn,
0:14:38 > 0:14:39though, isn't it, as well?
0:14:39 > 0:14:42That's the other thing because, based on the wages in England,
0:14:42 > 0:14:45- we wouldn't be able to afford that here.- No.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48This house was a huge hit with the Randles
0:14:48 > 0:14:49but would stretch their budget.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52Finding the right property at the right price will be key if
0:14:52 > 0:14:57Gemma's to persuade Chris a move is best for the family's future.
0:14:57 > 0:15:01Could property number two, also in Mount Barker, fit the bill?
0:15:02 > 0:15:05The house is just three years old and backs onto a communal area,
0:15:05 > 0:15:09perfect for spending family time together.
0:15:09 > 0:15:11It has the fourth bedroom the couple want,
0:15:11 > 0:15:14but will it have the wow factor of the first house?
0:15:14 > 0:15:17- Was it impressive as you walk in? - No, it's not.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20- You don't like it, do you? - No, I don't.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23I am feeling a little bit underwhelmed here.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27But if I'd have been here first, this would have been,
0:15:27 > 0:15:29"Wow, this is fantastic."
0:15:29 > 0:15:31- I think it's more realistic.- Yes.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34- We might be able to afford.- Yes. - But, again, it depends
0:15:34 > 0:15:36if it's got everything we need like the four bedrooms.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38Are you interested to see if it has still got the four bedrooms?
0:15:38 > 0:15:41We need to definitely have a look round.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44Hm.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47When you come back into it again, I quite like it, I do.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49- It's big enough for all four of us.- Yeah.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52- It's about the same size as our lounge at home.- Yeah. Definitely.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55But have you noticed, there's not a telly in here?
0:15:55 > 0:16:00So this might not actually be the lounge.
0:16:00 > 0:16:02- It's like a sitting area. - It might just be... Yeah.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05Hm, you might be right there, Gemma.
0:16:06 > 0:16:12Oh, wow. OK, this has the wow factor.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14- That's better, isn't it?- Yes.
0:16:14 > 0:16:15That's more like it.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17Oh, the fourth bedroom.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19God, this is a big room for a fourth bedroom.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21So, it has got four bedrooms then. Which is good.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24Yeah, but they're four double bedrooms.
0:16:24 > 0:16:28That's plenty of room for all the family and overseas visitors.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31And the outside area goes down well, too.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34- I do like having a deck. - This is lovely.- Yeah, it is nice.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37And Gemma's beady eye has noticed something else.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40We've got a gym on our doorstep.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43That's ridiculous!
0:16:43 > 0:16:47Perhaps an hour ago, I thought, "No, I want this house.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50"This was the house. This was the dream house."
0:16:50 > 0:16:54But coming here, now, I think this is more of a...an "us" house
0:16:54 > 0:16:57- and a more realistic house. - A family home, isn't it?
0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Yeah.- It's... It's nice.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05Maddie and Oliver look like they've settled in already
0:17:05 > 0:17:09but could the Randles afford this house on their £300,000 budget?
0:17:10 > 0:17:15Thinking about the other one now, I think this one's probably 280.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17I still think it's the top end of our budget
0:17:17 > 0:17:20but I think it might just be within budget.
0:17:20 > 0:17:21I think that's more realistic.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24I think it's top end so I'm going to go about 300.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26It's not quite as big as the other one
0:17:26 > 0:17:27but it's still got four bedrooms.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30- OK.- Yeah? 280 and 300. - Yeah.- Ready?- Yeah.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34It'll be interesting to see.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36- Oh!- Oh!
0:17:36 > 0:17:37That's well within budget.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39- That's more realistic.- Yeah.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42- And that's a big difference.- Yeah. And it's got that fourth bedroom.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44Yeah.
0:17:44 > 0:17:46- I like...- That's promising.- Yes.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49Great result and still one property to go.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52The final house is in Littlehampton,
0:17:52 > 0:17:55a small family-friendly village with a country feel
0:17:55 > 0:17:57and only a 10-minute drive
0:17:57 > 0:18:00from the larger shops and facilities of Mount Barker.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02Because it's further out from Adelaide,
0:18:02 > 0:18:06the couple could be looking at a 45-minute commute to work.
0:18:06 > 0:18:07But with four bedrooms,
0:18:07 > 0:18:11this house has plenty of room for visiting friends and family.
0:18:11 > 0:18:12Oh, my God!
0:18:14 > 0:18:17- This is different, isn't it? - It is different but I like it.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21- It's like a...- It's traditional.
0:18:22 > 0:18:27- It's traditional.- Yeah, it's nice. - It's huge!- It's a big room in here.
0:18:27 > 0:18:30It's...um...traditional.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32How else would you describe it, Gemma?
0:18:32 > 0:18:36- It's quite old-fashioned, isn't it? - Yeah, it is.- It's quite dated.
0:18:36 > 0:18:41We've just got to decide if we want to take on that challenge,
0:18:41 > 0:18:45- cos this is a big house. This is a bigger house than ours.- Yeah, it is.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48I know it's all on one level but it's a bigger house than ours
0:18:48 > 0:18:52- in England.- Yeah, it is. It'd take a lot of work, wouldn't it?- Yeah.
0:18:52 > 0:18:54But it's very grand.
0:18:54 > 0:18:58It's a grand house and it could be beautiful, this house could.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03Oh, God, no!
0:19:03 > 0:19:07Oh, this is just the most hideous room, isn't it?
0:19:07 > 0:19:12- The room's nice. It's the furniture. - Who would have furniture like this?
0:19:12 > 0:19:16Surely this was gone in the '80s.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23And outside, things don't get any better.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27- I feel a bit isolated up here. - It's a bit further out, isn't it?
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Yeah, not what we want for the kids.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32I think, with a three and a one-year-old
0:19:32 > 0:19:38and the fact that we are going to have so much upheaval moving here and
0:19:38 > 0:19:42you changing jobs, me potentially changing jobs, I think
0:19:42 > 0:19:47the last thing that we need is a house that needs work doing to it.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50This house might have all the space they need but it's not
0:19:50 > 0:19:54somewhere Gemma and Chris can imagine their family growing up.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57But if it's within their £300,000 budget,
0:19:57 > 0:19:58could the price win them round?
0:19:58 > 0:20:01- It's obviously completely different to the last two.- Mm-hm.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04It's a bit further out and stuff. But I think it's going to be cheaper
0:20:04 > 0:20:07and towards the lower end of our budget. So I'm going to say...
0:20:07 > 0:20:10260,000, I think.
0:20:10 > 0:20:14I'm going to go a little bit lower.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16I'll say 235.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- Shall we have a look? - Yeah, go on, then. If you're ready.
0:20:21 > 0:20:22What?!
0:20:25 > 0:20:29- Oh, my God. Oh, I would not pay that for this house.- No, really.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31That's shocked... That really shocked me, actually.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34We don't want a house to do up.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38We want to come and have it done for us already. Modern.
0:20:38 > 0:20:42- It's confirmed what we wanted in the first place.- Yeah.- Definitely.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47Looks like this house is a definite no.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50The day did start well with the house which
0:20:50 > 0:20:54wowed both Gemma and Chris, but had a price tag to match.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56Property number two was a slow starter
0:20:56 > 0:21:00but they soon warmed to it and it was within budget.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02Neither of them were sold on the final house
0:21:02 > 0:21:05and the price left them stunned.
0:21:05 > 0:21:10So, when it comes to property, will they vote for Australia or the UK?
0:21:10 > 0:21:15Based on the houses that we've seen in Australia, our vote goes to...
0:21:20 > 0:21:22ALL: Australia!
0:21:25 > 0:21:29I think the first two houses just showed me that we
0:21:29 > 0:21:36really could have what I dream of in Australia for us. I'm very happy.
0:21:36 > 0:21:40That surprised me. I wasn't sure if it would as well. It shocked me.
0:21:42 > 0:21:44Just have to get a job now.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50A yes vote for Oz is a great start
0:21:50 > 0:21:53for Gemma's dream of a new life down under
0:21:53 > 0:21:56but she still has a lot of work to do to get Chris
0:21:56 > 0:21:59over his worries about work prospects.
0:21:59 > 0:22:04Can an Aussie-style day out remind Chris what this move is all about?
0:22:04 > 0:22:07Spending more time together as a family.
0:22:13 > 0:22:15Oliver.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18The Randles are spending the day at Gorge Wildlife Park.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25'We just don't get the time to do anything like this at home.
0:22:25 > 0:22:26'We might have the odd Sunday together.'
0:22:26 > 0:22:29You know, one day, two days every month.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32I don't think you can compare the life here
0:22:32 > 0:22:34that you can back in the UK.
0:22:35 > 0:22:40You know, it's a different world and I just think this is what
0:22:40 > 0:22:43I wanted for my children.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45While today reminds Gemma just how desperate
0:22:45 > 0:22:49she is for more time with her family, Chris still has concerns.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52If we had a better work/life balance, we'd be able to do things
0:22:52 > 0:22:55like this on a more regular basis but it's just whether, again, we can
0:22:55 > 0:22:58afford to provide a good lifestyle over here for the children.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01'A lot is kind of riding still a little bit on convincing me
0:23:01 > 0:23:04'in terms of whether it's actually going to be worthwhile moving
0:23:04 > 0:23:05'over here financially.'
0:23:05 > 0:23:09Chris and Gemma meet the Corbett family, who emigrated two years ago.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11Scott's also a PE teacher
0:23:11 > 0:23:15so Chris takes the opportunity to grill him for information.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18I'm not finishing work until about 10 o'clock at night, really,
0:23:18 > 0:23:20if I'm honest. Have you found that it is better over here
0:23:20 > 0:23:22or the same or...?
0:23:22 > 0:23:24I remember going in first day and they said to me,
0:23:24 > 0:23:26"Well, school finishes at three o'clock.
0:23:26 > 0:23:30"We don't train the students after three o'clock."
0:23:30 > 0:23:32So, obviously, I'm stood there, smiling, thinking,
0:23:32 > 0:23:33"Three o'clock, I'm finished?"
0:23:33 > 0:23:36And they said, "Yeah, three o'clock, you're done."
0:23:36 > 0:23:38That's a huge chunk of extra time
0:23:38 > 0:23:40they could spend together as a family.
0:23:40 > 0:23:45In the UK, me and Chris at the minute are just exhausted.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48We're emotionally exhausted, we're physically exhausted,
0:23:48 > 0:23:50we work constantly.
0:23:50 > 0:23:51'I miss out a lot as well
0:23:51 > 0:23:56'because Chris has to take Maddie swimming and to gymnastics'
0:23:56 > 0:24:02and, you know, that's not why we had children, really.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04You know, we wanted to...
0:24:04 > 0:24:06We wanted be together
0:24:06 > 0:24:09and we wanted to enjoy them together and at the minute
0:24:09 > 0:24:14we just feel like two single parents just living under the same roof.
0:24:14 > 0:24:18We talk about living back in Britain as basically like a half life.
0:24:18 > 0:24:22You get such an extra amount of living time because the weather
0:24:22 > 0:24:25is so much better, because you can get out and you can do things.
0:24:25 > 0:24:27He'll come from school, I'll have the picnic tea or whatever
0:24:27 > 0:24:31and then we'll be on the beach until six, half six or whatever
0:24:31 > 0:24:35and then, you know, go home and you've had that family time.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38It's just a completely different way of life, isn't it?
0:24:38 > 0:24:40- GEMMA: Sorry.- Oh, sorry.
0:24:43 > 0:24:47It just sounds like everything that we want as well for our family.
0:24:49 > 0:24:50Sorry.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53Gemma's overcome at the thought
0:24:53 > 0:24:56of how much better their lives could be down under.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59Just... I just don't want to go home.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04'Cos I know that, like, in a couple of weeks,
0:25:04 > 0:25:07'it'll just be back to the same again.'
0:25:09 > 0:25:10It does, like...
0:25:10 > 0:25:13In the last three days, me and Chris have seen each other more than
0:25:13 > 0:25:17we have since Christmas, which is ridiculous.
0:25:19 > 0:25:24It is, you know, the four of us. This is what we want from Australia.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27This is why we want to move here so that we can be a family.
0:25:29 > 0:25:32It's been a day of simple pleasures but one which has driven home
0:25:32 > 0:25:36just why Gemma desperately wants to move her young family to Australia.
0:25:38 > 0:25:42When it comes to the vote, though, will Chris agree?
0:25:42 > 0:25:44ALL: Australia!
0:25:48 > 0:25:52- Yes, Oliver chose it, too. - Maddie, why did you choose Australia?
0:25:52 > 0:25:55- Kangaroos.- The kangaroos!- Kangaroos!
0:25:55 > 0:26:01I think that it is definitely what we want out of our life in Australia.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03It's been a great day together as a family,
0:26:03 > 0:26:05which we don't get the chance to do back in the UK.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16Today's given the Randles a glimpse
0:26:16 > 0:26:18of the sort of future they've dreamed of.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20Chris's second vote for Oz
0:26:20 > 0:26:23is another step in the right direction for Gemma.
0:26:23 > 0:26:24But if they're to make the move,
0:26:24 > 0:26:28it's crucial his job concerns are put to rest.
0:26:28 > 0:26:31Chris is the main visa applicant. Back in the UK,
0:26:31 > 0:26:35he's a PE teacher in a large inner-city school in Birmingham.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39He also has pastoral responsibility for 450 pupils,
0:26:39 > 0:26:43looking after any of their social or emotional needs.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45He's worked hard to build his career.
0:26:45 > 0:26:49It's taken me eight years to get into that position that I'm in now.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52I think if we did go and we came back again, I don't think
0:26:52 > 0:26:55I'd walk into a job which is the equivalent of what I've got now.
0:26:55 > 0:27:00Working partly in PE also in terms of pastoral care within
0:27:00 > 0:27:04a school, again, they are my two loves in my job.
0:27:04 > 0:27:06And Gemma knows Chris getting the right job down under will be
0:27:06 > 0:27:09crucial if she is to keep her dream on track.
0:27:09 > 0:27:16I'm hoping that he will find an equally enjoyable job
0:27:16 > 0:27:21and that he will realise that it was the right thing to do.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23If I can't work in both areas, I think
0:27:23 > 0:27:26that would certainly sway me one way or the other and
0:27:26 > 0:27:30have a big impact on whether that move would be the right thing to do.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33Everything hinges on whether
0:27:33 > 0:27:35Chris's concerns about his career can be laid to rest
0:27:35 > 0:27:38so we've arranged for him to visit Westminster Private School
0:27:38 > 0:27:42in Adelaide, where he meets principal Steve Bousfield.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Would my qualifications from England transfer straight over
0:27:48 > 0:27:51- directly to Australia or would I have to...?- They may do.
0:27:51 > 0:27:52The chances are they would.
0:27:52 > 0:27:54We have a large number of teachers who have arrived
0:27:54 > 0:27:57here from the UK and we brought in directly.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59So we have a number of people who've moved straight in here.
0:27:59 > 0:28:00Sounds promising.
0:28:00 > 0:28:04But could Chris continue with the pastoral role he loves?
0:28:04 > 0:28:05In the private schools,
0:28:05 > 0:28:08we put a great emphasis upon the pastoral care
0:28:08 > 0:28:09so we do expect heads of house
0:28:09 > 0:28:12to have a really close relationship with our students.
0:28:12 > 0:28:14Would it be a case that I could move straight over here
0:28:14 > 0:28:18- and apply for a head of house job or does it tend to be...?- Probably not.
0:28:18 > 0:28:20We would tend to appoint our heads of houses from within
0:28:20 > 0:28:23because we get to know them and we know the sort of students
0:28:23 > 0:28:25they're able to work with and be most effective with.
0:28:25 > 0:28:28That's a real blow for Chris.
0:28:28 > 0:28:31While his tour of the school continues,
0:28:31 > 0:28:34Gemma's taken Oliver and Maddie to a local kindergarten.
0:28:34 > 0:28:37It's a chance to address some worries she's had.
0:28:37 > 0:28:39- Have you made many friends from being here?- Yeah.
0:28:39 > 0:28:42I met a few girls here and even when we went to the birthday party,
0:28:42 > 0:28:43all the mums are sitting around,
0:28:43 > 0:28:46we're talking about kindy and all their experiences.
0:28:46 > 0:28:49That's the one thing I'm a little bit nervous about cos
0:28:49 > 0:28:52I'd like to come here and not work and obviously it can be quite
0:28:52 > 0:28:54isolating a little bit when you're stuck in a house.
0:28:54 > 0:28:58- With no family close by. - Yeah! Well, no family at all here.
0:28:58 > 0:29:02One of my main concerns coming here was the fact that the kids
0:29:02 > 0:29:04wouldn't have their grandparents here
0:29:04 > 0:29:09but after speaking to some of the mums and knowing that we could
0:29:09 > 0:29:11make friends quite easily here
0:29:11 > 0:29:16and the way that the children have been with our children today,
0:29:16 > 0:29:22I don't think that it's going to be a huge transition for them.
0:29:22 > 0:29:27Gemma's keeping her fingers crossed that Chris has had good news, too.
0:29:27 > 0:29:32I hope Chris has found that he could like a job over here
0:29:32 > 0:29:35and I'm hoping that the salary
0:29:35 > 0:29:41kind of matches - hopefully exceeds, but matches - his expectations.
0:29:41 > 0:29:45That's just what Chris is about to find out.
0:29:45 > 0:29:46'How realistic do you think it is'
0:29:46 > 0:29:48for me to be able to get a job over here?
0:29:48 > 0:29:50Well, there are a lot of PE teachers here but you've got
0:29:50 > 0:29:53eight years' experience and that will stand you in good stead.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56You know, I think you would have a reasonable chance of getting a job
0:29:56 > 0:29:58but I wouldn't advise you to leave the UK
0:29:58 > 0:30:01until you had some sniff of a job over here somewhere.
0:30:01 > 0:30:04What kind of salary would I be looking at earning over here?
0:30:04 > 0:30:07OK, normally a teacher without any responsibility at all,
0:30:07 > 0:30:08at the top of their scale -
0:30:08 > 0:30:10with your experience, you're probably about that -
0:30:10 > 0:30:14would be in the region of around 62,000 British pounds per year.
0:30:14 > 0:30:16That's a bit more than what I thought.
0:30:16 > 0:30:20That's almost £20,000 more than Chris currently earns in the UK.
0:30:22 > 0:30:24A job in Australia might mean putting his pastoral role
0:30:24 > 0:30:28on hold but he would get more time at home with the family.
0:30:28 > 0:30:31Has he heard enough to give up the position he's worked
0:30:31 > 0:30:33so hard for in the UK?
0:30:35 > 0:30:39Based on my work experience today, I've decided to vote for...
0:30:44 > 0:30:45..Australia.
0:30:46 > 0:30:48The job itself just seems really appealing.
0:30:48 > 0:30:51To be working in this sort of environment with these
0:30:51 > 0:30:54kind of facilities, as a potential, would be brilliant.
0:30:55 > 0:30:58Time to share the good news with Gemma.
0:30:58 > 0:31:01- It was really good. Really different.- Good different?- Yeah.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03What did they say about your pastoral stuff?
0:31:03 > 0:31:06- I wouldn't be able to go straight into a job with that.- Mm.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08But the positive was that
0:31:08 > 0:31:10I'd probably earn more money as well over here.
0:31:10 > 0:31:11SHE SQUEALS
0:31:13 > 0:31:18- Oh, I'm really pleased. - It was... It was really good.
0:31:18 > 0:31:20I mean, if there was a job there, I'd apply for that straightaway.
0:31:20 > 0:31:22- Really?- Yeah.
0:31:25 > 0:31:29Chris's earning prospects mean a new life in Australia
0:31:29 > 0:31:31for the family could be a step closer
0:31:31 > 0:31:34but the finances will have to work and getting the right
0:31:34 > 0:31:37price for their home in the UK will be crucial.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41Chris believes their house is worth £210,000
0:31:41 > 0:31:44but will two local estate agents agree?
0:31:44 > 0:31:45It's a nice, bright room.
0:31:45 > 0:31:49Contemporary colours and a nice, modern fireplace.
0:31:51 > 0:31:54That's a nice feature, isn't it, with the built-in oven and hob?
0:31:54 > 0:31:58It looks like there is a dishwasher. That'll please everybody.
0:31:58 > 0:32:01He's going in my room first.
0:32:01 > 0:32:04- GEMMA: He HAS gone in your room! - He is!
0:32:04 > 0:32:06It's a nice, bright, modern room. Good for a child.
0:32:06 > 0:32:11Also, get a double bed in here as a second bedroom.
0:32:11 > 0:32:15Family bathroom, fully tiled with a white suite.
0:32:15 > 0:32:20That's a nice, light, bright master bedroom. It's a good size.
0:32:20 > 0:32:22Some built-in wardrobes by the look of it.
0:32:22 > 0:32:25And a nice view of the back garden. Excellent.
0:32:27 > 0:32:28Bedroom three at the back.
0:32:28 > 0:32:31A good size to the bedroom for this sort of style of house.
0:32:31 > 0:32:34GEMMA: Our house looks really nice, doesn't it?
0:32:34 > 0:32:35It's a nice house.
0:32:35 > 0:32:38This is a really nicely presented three-bedroomed semidetached
0:32:38 > 0:32:41family home. All in all, very saleable property.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44My valuation - open market, 190,000.
0:32:44 > 0:32:47For a quick sale, 180,000.
0:32:48 > 0:32:52I would value the property at around about £200,000.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54If we were looking for a quick sale,
0:32:54 > 0:32:58probably 185-190 is probably nearer the mark.
0:33:01 > 0:33:04Hm. That's quite a lot less, then, isn't it, really,
0:33:04 > 0:33:10- than what I was hoping for?- That is massively less. We bought it for 196.
0:33:10 > 0:33:17- Mm-hm.- If we got that back, then I'd be happy but I'm not...
0:33:17 > 0:33:20We can't sell the house for less than we paid for it.
0:33:22 > 0:33:25Well, you can. Some people do. It's just whether you want to or not.
0:33:25 > 0:33:27That's the difference, isn't it?
0:33:27 > 0:33:30A valuation of £20,000 less than they'd hoped for
0:33:30 > 0:33:34is a massive blow and puts their dream in real jeopardy.
0:33:35 > 0:33:39So Gemma and Chris sit down to see if the finances could still work.
0:33:39 > 0:33:41To help them do the sums,
0:33:41 > 0:33:44we provided a breakdown of their outgoings in the UK
0:33:44 > 0:33:48in comparison to those down under, starting with the weekly shop.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52I cannot believe the shampoo and conditioner.
0:33:52 > 0:33:56- That's a massive difference, isn't it?- It's more than double.
0:33:56 > 0:34:01- £7.65 difference. On both of them. - On both.- That's a massive difference.
0:34:01 > 0:34:05- Sweetcorn is less.- Cheaper.- Yay! We've found something that's less.
0:34:07 > 0:34:12That's £6 difference in the yoghurts. For a six-pack.
0:34:12 > 0:34:14So it's a pound extra per yoghurt here.
0:34:15 > 0:34:18So, how does the weekly shop compare?
0:34:18 > 0:34:23£73 or £74 extra a week here than...
0:34:25 > 0:34:28..back in the UK, which is quite a big difference.
0:34:28 > 0:34:31In fact, it's a difference of almost £4,000 a year
0:34:31 > 0:34:33on food shopping alone.
0:34:33 > 0:34:35And that's not the only shock.
0:34:35 > 0:34:37Basing their figures on the cheapest property they saw,
0:34:37 > 0:34:42their monthly mortgage in Australia would be £1,700.
0:34:42 > 0:34:46That is a lot more than we pay at the minute on our mortgage, isn't it?
0:34:46 > 0:34:49It's about three times more. It's a big difference in price.
0:34:49 > 0:34:53But Chris stands to earn more in Australia than in the UK.
0:34:53 > 0:34:56- OK, so £62,000 would be over here, wouldn't it?- Yes.
0:34:56 > 0:35:00And it's 51,205 over there.
0:35:00 > 0:35:04So it's a difference of £10,795.
0:35:04 > 0:35:08But is it enough of a difference to make the dream life affordable?
0:35:08 > 0:35:11As the figures mount, tempers rise.
0:35:11 > 0:35:17- No, the total per month is like this now.- OK. All right. Chill.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20You're annoying me. Right. No, what the difference is.
0:35:20 > 0:35:22Yeah, and I was going to say,
0:35:22 > 0:35:24"That's that and then that's that and the difference is that."
0:35:24 > 0:35:25- Go on, then.- After you.
0:35:25 > 0:35:28Will their calculations spell the end of Gemma's dream?
0:35:28 > 0:35:32- What's the difference?- So, the difference would be...
0:35:34 > 0:35:37..£1,704.
0:35:37 > 0:35:43So we're £1,704 worse-off a year in Australia.
0:35:43 > 0:35:44Yeah.
0:35:44 > 0:35:47Gemma's devastated by the figures but there is still
0:35:47 > 0:35:51a glimmer of hope as Chris spots some potential savings.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54Just from the few days we spent over here so far, you know,
0:35:54 > 0:35:56I think we could cut back so much easier.
0:35:56 > 0:36:00I know we've put the car loans and things and bits and pieces but...
0:36:00 > 0:36:01We're hoping to have paid those off.
0:36:01 > 0:36:04- We'd have had them paid off before we come, wouldn't we?- Yeah.- I mean,
0:36:04 > 0:36:07that makes a big difference straightaway. It's 500 quid.
0:36:07 > 0:36:09I was a bit nervous when we first started with the calculations
0:36:09 > 0:36:13and stuff and working things out. It's a bit positive now, isn't it?
0:36:13 > 0:36:17Despite not looking good on paper, some tightening of the belts
0:36:17 > 0:36:19could mean the figures aren't as bad as they feared.
0:36:19 > 0:36:21So when it comes to finances,
0:36:21 > 0:36:24will the couple choose the UK or Australia?
0:36:24 > 0:36:27Based on the reality check, our vote goes to...
0:36:33 > 0:36:35- 50/50.- I'm going to say Australia.
0:36:38 > 0:36:41I'm really surprised that we went that way round.
0:36:41 > 0:36:44I thought that I'd vote for Australia and you'd be the 50/50.
0:36:44 > 0:36:47I was really close. I was really close to being 50/50, I was.
0:36:47 > 0:36:49I'm convinced we can make massive cutbacks
0:36:49 > 0:36:53and make it feasible to move over here. I do, I really do.
0:36:56 > 0:36:57I'm very pleased.
0:37:03 > 0:37:07A third vote for Australia means Chris seems to have been won over
0:37:07 > 0:37:10but Gemma's biggest fear has always been separating her
0:37:10 > 0:37:12children from their grandparents.
0:37:12 > 0:37:13Her dream may be close
0:37:13 > 0:37:17but will hearing from home prove too heartbreaking to bear?
0:37:18 > 0:37:21We've put together a DVD of messages to let them know how family
0:37:21 > 0:37:24and friends are feeling back in the UK.
0:37:24 > 0:37:27With Maddie and Oliver looked after by a childminder,
0:37:27 > 0:37:30Chris and Gemma settle down to watch.
0:37:30 > 0:37:32Hi, Gem, Chris, Maddie and Oliver.
0:37:32 > 0:37:33- Hi, guys.- Hi.
0:37:33 > 0:37:35Hi, Gem and Chris, Maddie and Oliver.
0:37:35 > 0:37:37Hello. Hope you've had a good week.
0:37:37 > 0:37:41Hi, Maddie. Hi, Oliver. Hi, Gem. Hi, Chris.
0:37:41 > 0:37:46They're a really cute family. Gem and Chris are brilliant together.
0:37:46 > 0:37:47They really work.
0:37:47 > 0:37:49And the kids are just adorable.
0:37:49 > 0:37:51They're a lovely family.
0:37:51 > 0:37:53As soon as Chris and Gemma got together, we instantly thought...
0:37:53 > 0:37:56- We instantly liked her, didn't we?- Absolutely.
0:37:56 > 0:37:58We knew that she was a keeper.
0:37:58 > 0:38:00Christopher idolises Maddie
0:38:00 > 0:38:02and Gemma idolises Oliver.
0:38:02 > 0:38:05There are determined, in their own way,
0:38:05 > 0:38:07to spoil the children and we're helping them, really.
0:38:09 > 0:38:12I always said that if I could pick anybody for my Gemma,
0:38:12 > 0:38:14it would be Chris.
0:38:14 > 0:38:17He seems to be the perfect husband for her.
0:38:17 > 0:38:19Gemma's got a very bubbly character.
0:38:19 > 0:38:23- She's got this positive attitude to life.- Yeah.
0:38:23 > 0:38:25Gem sees the good in everything, really.
0:38:25 > 0:38:29She's just a real diamond. She's there whenever you need her.
0:38:29 > 0:38:33She's a trooper. She's a fantastic mum. She just...
0:38:33 > 0:38:37She does everything for everybody and doesn't moan.
0:38:37 > 0:38:40It'd leave a big hole in our lives if they decide to move to
0:38:40 > 0:38:44Australia and that will be a hard thing to fill.
0:38:44 > 0:38:48Missing the kids growing up is going to be gut-wrenching.
0:38:48 > 0:38:52They're cutting them out of our lives but cutting us out of theirs as well.
0:38:52 > 0:38:55- It's going to be heartbreaking to say goodbye to them.- Oh, absolutely.
0:38:55 > 0:39:00I'll be coming out to see you when I can. I just think it'll...
0:39:02 > 0:39:04It'll just be mad you won't be there.
0:39:09 > 0:39:10Sorry.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14I'm sure you'll make the right decision.
0:39:14 > 0:39:18All you need to know is whatever you decide to do, we'll support you.
0:39:18 > 0:39:20We're right behind you, 100%.
0:39:22 > 0:39:28I hope you make the right decision and whatever you decide...
0:39:28 > 0:39:29I can't. Sorry, I can't.
0:39:36 > 0:39:41I feel, at the moment, like my heart is being wrenched out.
0:39:41 > 0:39:45But, as a family, they have to do what's right for them.
0:40:04 > 0:40:08- Oh, your poor mum.- I know. - She couldn't even speak, could she?
0:40:08 > 0:40:11- She hasn't really spoke about it, has she? So...- No.
0:40:11 > 0:40:14I think my dad's a bit in denial.
0:40:14 > 0:40:18I don't think he thinks we're serious, in a way.
0:40:18 > 0:40:22Maybe that's because he doesn't want to think about it.
0:40:22 > 0:40:25Mm. It is a long way, isn't it?
0:40:29 > 0:40:34Hearing from friends and family was a heartbreaking experience
0:40:34 > 0:40:37and now Gemma and Chris are faced with the biggest decision
0:40:37 > 0:40:38they'll ever have to make.
0:40:38 > 0:40:42For Gemma, it'll mean choosing between what the family will gain
0:40:42 > 0:40:46in Australia and the heartache their departure will cause.
0:40:59 > 0:41:00For me, personally,
0:41:00 > 0:41:03the hardest people to leave will definitely be my friends.
0:41:03 > 0:41:05I mean, you know...
0:41:09 > 0:41:12If we were to move over here, it would be really, really tough.
0:41:12 > 0:41:15You know, we'd be completely on our own. Very isolated, no family,
0:41:15 > 0:41:17no support, no friends.
0:41:17 > 0:41:23Our future could potentially be amazing for the four of us but
0:41:23 > 0:41:24the fact that we wouldn't
0:41:24 > 0:41:28have anybody to share it with would be hard.
0:41:28 > 0:41:30- It would be hard. - The week has been really positive
0:41:30 > 0:41:34but there's still massive risks, I think, of moving over here.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37That's why we've got to work out what's right, really.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40Whether it's worth making that big risk to have, you know,
0:41:40 > 0:41:44the environment and the lifestyle that's calling over here or
0:41:44 > 0:41:48whether it's better to be safe, you know, and just stay where you are.
0:41:48 > 0:41:51Has the week in Australia been enough to dispel Chris's concerns
0:41:51 > 0:41:55about a move and will Gemma decide that
0:41:55 > 0:41:59leaving behind everyone she loves in the UK is a sacrifice worth
0:41:59 > 0:42:02making to give her family a better life down under?
0:42:04 > 0:42:05ALL: Australia!
0:42:07 > 0:42:09Australia!
0:42:15 > 0:42:19- Which has surprised me. - I'm so pleased.
0:42:20 > 0:42:23It shocked me because I didn't think I'd be in this situation now.
0:42:23 > 0:42:26I was thinking, "Yeah, maybe we should go and do this."
0:42:26 > 0:42:29But the more I do think about it, the more I think,
0:42:29 > 0:42:31"Yeah, let's give it a go."
0:42:31 > 0:42:34For us, it is going to be harder, I think.
0:42:34 > 0:42:36I'll just have to keep in mind this week
0:42:36 > 0:42:39and what it's done for Maddie and Oliver.
0:42:39 > 0:42:43You just don't want to look back in ten years and wish we'd have done it.
0:42:43 > 0:42:45- I think we'll regret it if we don't.- Yeah.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48- I'd be a lot happier in the sun over here...- Yeah!
0:42:48 > 0:42:50..poor and broke, than back in England, poor and broke
0:42:50 > 0:42:54and not in the sun and in the rain instead so it sounds better to me.
0:42:58 > 0:43:01With such strong family ties in the UK,
0:43:01 > 0:43:05this week was always going to be an emotional whirlwind for the Randles.
0:43:05 > 0:43:09But they've come out the other side convinced Australia is
0:43:09 > 0:43:12the right place to bring up their family
0:43:12 > 0:43:15and achieve the time together they so desperately want.
0:43:15 > 0:43:18Soon, they could be on their way
0:43:18 > 0:43:21to a new life on the other side of the world.
