0:00:02 > 0:00:04What would you do if you passionately believed

0:00:04 > 0:00:07there was a better life waiting for you on the other side of

0:00:07 > 0:00:11the world, but the person you love the most didn't share your dream?

0:00:11 > 0:00:14Would you follow your head or your heart?

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Richelle Barker is passionate

0:00:17 > 0:00:20about moving to the other side of the world.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand

0:00:23 > 0:00:25through geography in school.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27And she's desperate for her mum to join her.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30We're less like mother and daughter and more like best friends.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34But for mum Lorraine, that means facing an unbearable choice.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I can't see me being in New Zealand, thinking,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40"My God, I've left my mum."

0:00:40 > 0:00:42So when their trial week's over,

0:00:42 > 0:00:46will mother and daughter face the future together or apart?

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Whatever's going to happen,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51someone's potentially going to lose their mum.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Roughly the same size as Great Britain or Japan, New Zealand

0:01:19 > 0:01:23boasts almost 9,500 miles of coastline and sandy beaches.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25With most parts of the country

0:01:25 > 0:01:28enjoying over 2,000 hours of sunshine each summer,

0:01:28 > 0:01:32it's not difficult to see why, for almost 40 years, it's been

0:01:32 > 0:01:36one of the top ten destinations for UK residents choosing to emigrate.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Richelle has one week to convince mum Lorraine

0:01:42 > 0:01:46to uproot her entire life and start afresh down under.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48When it's over, they'll face a decision

0:01:48 > 0:01:50that could change their lives for ever -

0:01:50 > 0:01:55whether to stay in the UK or to take the plunge and moved to New Zealand.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00The Barkers' journey begins by flying 12,000 miles with

0:02:00 > 0:02:03stops in four different time zones.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07So, after a marathon 30 hours of travelling, how are they feeling?

0:02:07 > 0:02:12It was very long, very sweaty, with weird food,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16but the sun is shining and - whoop, whoop - can't wait.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Despite the long flight, the ladies seem to be in good form.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22It still hasn't hit home. We were on the plane, saying,

0:02:22 > 0:02:26"We're going to New Zealand." It just doesn't feel real.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Yeah, this is my dream to come here

0:02:29 > 0:02:32and to actually get that, it's just...

0:02:32 > 0:02:36It hasn't sunk in and I don't think it will for quite a while yet.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40But, with just one week to persuade her mum life would

0:02:40 > 0:02:44be better in New Zealand, Richelle will need to find her bearings fast.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Back in the UK, classroom assistant Lorraine

0:02:50 > 0:02:53and 18-year-old daughter Richelle live in this three-bedroom

0:02:53 > 0:02:57bungalow in Kinmel Bay, North Wales and, as relationships between

0:02:57 > 0:03:02mothers and daughters go, they don't come much stronger than this one.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03'We are extremely close.'

0:03:03 > 0:03:07We're less like mother and daughter and more like best friends,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11really, and she is my rock, my best friend, my confidant, you know,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13my everything.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16They spend almost all their spare time together.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19We go to these Country and Western festivals and we dress up

0:03:19 > 0:03:24with our Stetsons and boots and we do a bit of line dancing.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26We go for walks together. We have our nails done.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30She's even talking lately about me going round the clubs in Rhyl.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33At 50, that is not an option.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36But the relationship is being put to the test, with Richelle trying

0:03:36 > 0:03:39desperately to convince her mum to follow her dream

0:03:39 > 0:03:43and move to New Zealand, even though neither have ever been.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Everything Richelle seems to do, it's all with New Zealand in mind.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50'I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand through

0:03:50 > 0:03:52'geography in school, where we

0:03:52 > 0:03:55'saw these amazing mountains with the snow.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57'The backdrops are fantastic.'

0:03:57 > 0:03:59They've got nice holiday destinations with beaches,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03just like we have here. Only they have the summer for it.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Lorraine emigrated to Australia in her 20s,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09returning to the UK before Richelle was born.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Now, older and wiser, she doesn't know

0:04:11 > 0:04:15if she's got the strength to do it all over again.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19At 50, I can see pitfalls and I can see problems arising,

0:04:19 > 0:04:22financial difficulties. Will I be getting a job?

0:04:22 > 0:04:26'Will I be able to settle? Will I be able to make friends?'

0:04:26 > 0:04:32And I'm really quite concerned if I'm doing the right thing or not.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35A legacy from Lorraine's time down under is Australian passports

0:04:35 > 0:04:39for her and Richelle, meaning they won't need visas for New Zealand.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41That should make a move straightforward.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45But if Lorraine was to leave Wales, she'd also have to leave her mum.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49My mum has always been there to help, both me and my daughter.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52She's always lived just down the road away from us.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56Always phone each other every day.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00I can't see me being in New Zealand, thinking,

0:05:00 > 0:05:02"My God, I've left my mum."

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Richelle's original idea was for her nan to go with them but health

0:05:06 > 0:05:10issues mean it's extremely unlikely she'll be able to make the move.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Richelle's all too aware of the emotional turmoil her mum faces.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16This is part of my dilemma.

0:05:16 > 0:05:22If we go out to New Zealand and my mum is not happy or not settled,

0:05:22 > 0:05:27that would break my heart to see my best friend unhappy.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Richelle's dream of a new life down under means Lorraine will

0:05:30 > 0:05:33have to choose between her mum and her daughter.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37It seems that whatever's going to happen, someone's potentially

0:05:37 > 0:05:42going to lose their mum, whether it's me with you, or you with your mum.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45It's a dilemma all round.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56For their first-ever trip to New Zealand, Richelle and Lorraine

0:05:56 > 0:05:59are visiting the Greater Auckland region in the North Island.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01It's the most populated city in the country

0:06:01 > 0:06:04but, surrounded by hundreds of small suburbs,

0:06:04 > 0:06:09it promises plenty of opportunity for an outdoor lifestyle.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Home for the week is a two-bedroom cottage in Coatesville,

0:06:12 > 0:06:16a small community about 18 miles north-west of the city.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19With Richelle keen on a rural home down under,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21this spot could be perfect.

0:06:21 > 0:06:22LORRAINE GASPS

0:06:22 > 0:06:26- Oh, my God.- Wow.- That is fantastic.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28No, Mum, it's the little cottage on the left, I think.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I don't care if it's that garage. It's fabulous.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34She's not out of the car yet, but I think Lorraine is impressed.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- Died and gone to heaven.- Is it just this part or is it...? Oh, no.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41I think it's just this part.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Their two-bedroom rental cottage is attached to the owner's home

0:06:44 > 0:06:48and forms part of a traditional Kiwi lifestyle plot,

0:06:48 > 0:06:50so it should be right up their street.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52OK, so this is the kitchen.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54So, it's really small.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00I wouldn't mind washing up though. No dishwasher. Just that amazing view.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02I'll keep you up for that.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Nothing's going to dent Richelle's enthusiasm.

0:07:05 > 0:07:11I love these big, quirky rooms and the campfire. Absolutely amazing.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13- Have to learn how to work that.- Lovely.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16There's different, funny, funky room shapes, isn't there?

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- Yeah, definitely.- Not square boxes. - Have you seen the view?- Oh.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22That is what I am talking about. Beautiful.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25These lifestyle blocks are absolutely amazing.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Richelle's mission to sell the New Zealand lifestyle to her mum

0:07:28 > 0:07:31has well and truly begun.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Sold. Have squatters got rights over here?

0:07:33 > 0:07:35THEY CHUCKLE

0:07:35 > 0:07:36It's amicable now,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39but the coming week will put this relationship through the wringer

0:07:39 > 0:07:43if Lorraine can't be convinced of a future in New Zealand.

0:07:43 > 0:07:48I'll just have to suck it and see, find out some more first.

0:07:48 > 0:07:53- But first day, first feeling... - Impression.- First impression -

0:07:53 > 0:07:55it's absolutely beautiful.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05Home for the Barkers in the UK is a three-bedroom detached

0:08:05 > 0:08:08bungalow in Kinmel Bay, North Wales.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11But if Richelle can convince her mum to move, what sort of

0:08:11 > 0:08:14house would they be looking for in New Zealand?

0:08:14 > 0:08:18My dream house would be a wooden, weatherboard house,

0:08:18 > 0:08:22three bedrooms, big private plot of land,

0:08:22 > 0:08:25half an hour to an hour away from civilisation.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29I do like wooden houses and I don't like square boxes,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32so anything that's quirky or a little bit different.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37- Yeah, so, some of it is quite similar, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40There's one thing we agree on, anyway. Just location.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Got this idea of having chickens and sheep.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46I'd be happy with just a dog.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53The Barkers' property budget for New Zealand is £200,000.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56To show them what their money might buy,

0:08:56 > 0:08:58we've selected three properties.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02One on-budget, one their ideal home, and one in between.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05After seeing each, they'll find out what they cost.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08First stop is the farming region of Kaukapakapa.

0:09:08 > 0:09:1145 minutes from the centre of Auckland,

0:09:11 > 0:09:15it's a popular area for people wanting to combine city working

0:09:15 > 0:09:18with rural living, so it should appeal to Richelle.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22This four-bedroom property has plenty of room inside.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25And with 2.4 acres outside, it could also give Richelle

0:09:25 > 0:09:28the space she needs for those sheep and chickens.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- Wow, what do you think of this? - It's a view, isn't it?

0:09:31 > 0:09:34They've got a little tree swing as well. It's quite cool.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- Nice approach.- Yeah, it's really nice. It's a nice deck.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42I hope they've got one on the other side as well

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- cos that's where the view is. - Oh, it is lovely.- Very nice.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48So far, so good. But what about the inside?

0:09:48 > 0:09:51It does need a lot of TLC, I think.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54But they've got the space to do it with.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57But would they have the inclination?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59I don't know. Let's...

0:10:00 > 0:10:03That's nice. Wow. A brand-new cooker.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06- It's not a bad size. - It's really nice.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10- It would have to be... - Modernised.- Mm.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14But depending on the price, I mean, things could be done with it.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I'm not sure Lorraine is entirely convinced.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Safe to say we won't be buying the furniture.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24Richelle needs to find something to please her mum - and quick.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28- This is bedroom number one. Decent size, isn't it?- It is.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31I suppose the bed is big so it's taking up some room.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34They've got cowboy hats, Mum. Ready for us to move in.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Nice try but not sure it's going to be enough.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41- There's a lot of money to be spent here.- There is.- It's old electric.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45And it's...everything from carpets to curtains.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Skirting boards, ceilings. Interior doors as well.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52And that noise all day with the lorries passing.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56- Yes.- You're right on a busy road. - It's a highway.- It's a highway.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01- They're doing 100km. - Yeah.- Well, we'll see.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05They are underwhelmed by the interior of this house, and with

0:11:05 > 0:11:09the busy road running parallel, outside could be a problem, too.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13I'm just not feeling it here. With that road, I think...

0:11:13 > 0:11:15We're not used to it, aren't we? It's just...

0:11:15 > 0:11:18I know it's not very frequent, those cars,

0:11:18 > 0:11:23but it's just there and you can't change that.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26It's not quite the rural retreat the ladies first thought,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29but Richelle isn't giving up just yet.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32So, what would you want to put on here? 2.3 acres.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36Just sheep and chickens. Cos this is what we wanted. Well, what I wanted.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41- Yeah, I don't know about "we" there, but...- Yeah, this is...

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- This is ticking boxes from the outside.- Uh-huh.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Just not sure about the house.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48This house has the land Richelle wants

0:11:48 > 0:11:52but will it be within their reach financially?

0:11:52 > 0:11:57Well, our budget is £200,000. I'm going to say 160.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Because of the work that needs to be done on the house.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02- Do you want to turn over the card?- Hmm!

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- OK, here we go. - SHE HUMS A FANFARE

0:12:05 > 0:12:06Wow.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12So, that was quite a lot more than what we expected.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- It must be the area. - It's the lifestyle block.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20It's the lifestyle block. That's what you're paying for, I suppose -

0:12:20 > 0:12:21that land.

0:12:22 > 0:12:27- I thought our budget would be quite enough to buy a better house.- Oops.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31The real cost of lifestyle living

0:12:31 > 0:12:33is threatening to derail Richelle's dream.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Will the next house lift her spirits?

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's a well presented three-bedroom house

0:12:40 > 0:12:42in the small township of Parakai.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45It's further away from the city centre

0:12:45 > 0:12:47so should offer more value for money.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Well, it's very suburban.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Squashed in with thousands of others.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54It's not ticking any of my checklist.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58OK, it isn't quite the lifestyle block Richelle is looking for,

0:12:58 > 0:13:00but could the inside win her over?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- Let's have a look inside. - House number two.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Oh, wow. That's...amazing.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- It's a bit more... - Compared to the other house.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- It's open plan, isn't it? - Yeah, I love open plan.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17- Oh, wow. It's a nice kitchen.- Yeah. Nice workable kitchen, isn't it?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19So much more positive than the last place.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- There's not much to do at all here.- I know.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26- I love the way it flows outside. - Yeah, that is nice.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- Nice and clean as well, isn't it? - Yeah.- There's nothing to do, really.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33But is there outdoor space for Richelle's livestock plans?

0:13:33 > 0:13:37It's a really nice garden. It's a really low-maintenance garden.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- A nice bit of decking.- But there's no way for chickens, or for sheep.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44You can't have everything.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47And a lack of space for animals isn't the only problem.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51I can see about 50... 50 houses in one glance.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55I know it's quiet now but you've got kids on the weekend.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59So, outside isn't perfect. Perhaps it's time to go back indoors.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04- Oh, so this comes into the lounge? - Very nice.- It's big enough. I mean...

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Yeah, there's only two of us. It's fine.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12- Oh, this is a nice size. - Oh, wow. Yeah, this is lovely.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15Nothing to do here - new electrics, new carpets.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Right. So, it's a main bathroom. And it's got...

0:14:21 > 0:14:22a washing machine in.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25OK.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29I don't think I could fit in that bath.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32- That's not a bath, that's a shower.- For your feet.

0:14:32 > 0:14:37- It's... It's usable.- Usable. If you're the Hobbit, it's usable.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41The bath's too small, the neighbours too close,

0:14:41 > 0:14:45but can they actually afford it on their £200,000 budget?

0:14:46 > 0:14:48How much do you think it is worth?

0:14:48 > 0:14:50House-wise, it's a good...good place.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54But squashed and with all that, overlooking, no privacy -

0:14:54 > 0:14:59I think £200,000.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01- Am I being realistic?- I don't know.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05I said 160 on the last place when it was 283.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07Shall we see how much it's worth?

0:15:07 > 0:15:12- A-ha!- OK, so it's under budget by £5,000.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15So, it's £195,000,

0:15:15 > 0:15:20- NZ355,000...- Good guess.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21..so it's less than our budget

0:15:21 > 0:15:24but we'll still have to get a mortgage for it.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26There is nothing to do,

0:15:26 > 0:15:29so you wouldn't be spending any more money

0:15:29 > 0:15:31if it's only your own mark on it,

0:15:31 > 0:15:36but you're still coming down an alleyway, you're still overlooked.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38Well...

0:15:38 > 0:15:40I don't think I can afford my dream.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42That's quite a frightening aspect of it.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46Today certainly isn't going to plan. And, with Richelle now questioning

0:15:46 > 0:15:49whether they can afford the dream home in New Zealand,

0:15:49 > 0:15:53any chance of persuading Lorraine to make the move could be irrelevant.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58Can property number three offer them both the right price and location?

0:15:58 > 0:16:00This four-bedroom house is in Helensville,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03within easy commuting distance to central Auckland

0:16:03 > 0:16:07and, with plenty of social clubs and activities nearby, it could

0:16:07 > 0:16:10give the Barkers the community feel they're yearning for.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14- It's a real cottagey look to it, isn't it?- It's got the veranda.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16And it's got a chicken.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18That's got to be a good sign!

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Oh, look, Mum, it's got a campfire.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25It's an old pot belly thing. That's a nice feature, mind, isn't it?

0:16:25 > 0:16:29- It can be lovely and warm in the winter.- It's a really nice room.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34It's a nice open plan. It flows into the dining room, which is quite nice.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Oh, that's a nice sized kitchen.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41It needs a bit of TLC, but I think it's...

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Yeah, it's the size we're looking for and that's

0:16:44 > 0:16:46really ample for the two of us.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48It's looking promising so far.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52- First house with stairs. - It's really strange. There are nice.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Lovely spindles.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58- We haven't lived in a house with stairs for years.- I know.- Oh, wow.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02- It's quite a big sized room. - Wow, it's huge, yeah.- Oh, it's nice.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06- Nice and...breezy and cool. - It's lovely.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08It's got a really nice view as well.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Inside seems to have won Richelle and Lorraine over

0:17:11 > 0:17:14but will the garden offer more privacy than the last property?

0:17:14 > 0:17:15Nice.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19Considering, houses, you can see houses at the back

0:17:19 > 0:17:23and at the sides, you're not looking in somebody else's window.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26You feel like you're private. Secluded, really.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29This house seems to work for them, inside and out.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Your own little oasis. It's lovely.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33But will it be priced to please?

0:17:34 > 0:17:38It's got to be over £200,000. But how much by?

0:17:38 > 0:17:41I'm going to put my neck out, not knowing the area or prices -

0:17:41 > 0:17:46235. £235,000.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50- Right, OK. - But I could be well off the mark.

0:17:50 > 0:17:55I'm going to say it's bang on our budget at £200,000.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Right, do you want to go for it?

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Oh.- Halfway between the two of us.- It was, yeah.

0:18:01 > 0:18:06- £217,000.- Which is NZ395,000.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10That's nearly £20,000 over the Barkers' budget.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13But if Richelle and Lorraine can secure well-paid jobs,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15it might not be out of reach.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19- So, it's round about what I was thinking...- Yeah.- ..but...yeah.

0:18:19 > 0:18:24- So, it's quite a nice house, isn't it? Nice area.- Yeah.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27It is. It is nice. You can't really say much different.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30The house prices are so much more expensive than I imagined.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35It's been a bad start to Richelle's week as the real cost of

0:18:35 > 0:18:38the kind of property she wants has been revealed.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42Property one offered the lifestyle block she's been dreaming of

0:18:42 > 0:18:44but at a price they weren't prepared to pay.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48The second house was more affordable but was too overlooked.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52And the final house was almost perfect

0:18:52 > 0:18:54but just beyond their budget.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56So, based on what they've seen today,

0:18:56 > 0:18:59will the Barkers vote for a property in the UK or New Zealand?

0:19:01 > 0:19:04We've had a real eye-opener today looking at the three different houses

0:19:04 > 0:19:10around New Zealand and, based on what we've seen today, we vote for...

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- ..UK.- I'm very undecided.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25And I'm surprised that you have picked the UK.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29It's been a really surprising day. It's just been super disappointing.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31I just thought we could get

0:19:31 > 0:19:35so much more for our money than what we've been shown today.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Richelle's dreamt of a new life in New Zealand for almost ten years

0:19:45 > 0:19:48but the true cost of property could put the move on ice

0:19:48 > 0:19:51if she can't find the right job with the right salary.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Back in the UK, Richelle earns around £10,000 a year

0:19:56 > 0:20:01as a full-time accounts assistant, while studying for her final exams.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03I'm not on much at the moment,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07as I'm just on an accounts assistant wage,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09but if we do go, we will need a mortgage,

0:20:09 > 0:20:11we will need finance on the cars,

0:20:11 > 0:20:15so the right salary to cover those bases would be fantastic,

0:20:15 > 0:20:17would be needed.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21As a classroom assistant for young people with learning difficulties,

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Lorraine earns a similar wage.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27She loves her job, but is willing to be flexible in New Zealand.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30I know beggars can't be choosers, and at 50 I'm not sure

0:20:30 > 0:20:34I'm going to have a lot of options, but I would like to think

0:20:34 > 0:20:37that I would gain a similar position.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40As part of their fact-finding week down under,

0:20:40 > 0:20:42we've arranged for Richelle and Lorraine

0:20:42 > 0:20:44to explore the local job market.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46Lorraine has come to the Wilson School

0:20:46 > 0:20:48for children with special needs in Takapuna

0:20:48 > 0:20:53and hopes Principal Jan Kennington can put some of her worries to rest.

0:20:53 > 0:20:58I am 50, and I'm just a little bit concerned.

0:20:58 > 0:21:03Is that too old to be applying for posts for a teacher's aide?

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Age isn't a barrier, in my view.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09I think that would be the case in most special schools in New Zealand.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12What we are looking for are people who are passionate

0:21:12 > 0:21:16about our students and are fit and able and ready and willing

0:21:16 > 0:21:20to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22A large number of our students

0:21:22 > 0:21:24have got a significant physical disability,

0:21:24 > 0:21:28so we need people who are able to help with hoisting them,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30moving them, positioning them

0:21:30 > 0:21:33and taking care of all of their physical needs.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37So it's really more a question of what you're prepared to do,

0:21:37 > 0:21:41- rather than what you are qualified to do.- I see.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44That's exactly what Lorraine needs to hear,

0:21:44 > 0:21:48and if she's happy, it could take some of the pressure off Richelle.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Yesterday was very disappointing, so today...

0:21:50 > 0:21:53Everything is riding on today, really.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56Richelle will be graduating as an account technician soon

0:21:56 > 0:21:59and hopes her qualifications will be transferable to New Zealand.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02To find out, she's meeting Martin Richardson,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Director at a local accountancy firm.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Once our graduates have finished university, there's still

0:22:08 > 0:22:10another three or four year training programme

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- to get into the New Zealand Institute.- Right.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17So there's a Foundations programme that takes the first year,

0:22:17 > 0:22:19then there's another two or three years,

0:22:19 > 0:22:23so you get work experience and you get on-the-job training.

0:22:23 > 0:22:27So if I were to emigrate, I would have to do the extra three,

0:22:27 > 0:22:31- four years?- Yes.- To be recognised? - Yes, I would think so.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34That would mean more studying for Richelle,

0:22:34 > 0:22:36but it isn't putting her off.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39So are there many job opportunities for someone like me

0:22:39 > 0:22:42- emigrating out to New Zealand? - I think so.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46It obviously depends on your CV and how good you are, but currently

0:22:46 > 0:22:49we're employing for next year's grad intake,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52so all the accounting firms in Auckland will do

0:22:52 > 0:22:55a grad recruitment around this period.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58The bigger firms will take up to 50 or 60,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02so there could be 300 or 400 grad jobs going.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Sounds like Richelle could have more job opportunities

0:23:05 > 0:23:07here than in the UK.

0:23:07 > 0:23:12What kind of salary would I expect with my age? I am only 18.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Well, currently we're offering 44,000 for the graduates

0:23:15 > 0:23:17that we're taking on next year,

0:23:17 > 0:23:21and after the three years in getting experience you'd move through

0:23:21 > 0:23:23to a senior, and the starting rate

0:23:23 > 0:23:26for seniors is about 65,000 currently.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30About two years later you can get to manager, which is about 80,000,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33and then basically, the sky is the limit after that, really.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36- Wow, that is brilliant. - That's great news.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38If Richelle was earning around £24,500,

0:23:38 > 0:23:42it would be more than double what she makes at home.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44This could put her dream back on track,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47if Lorraine's happy with the possibilities in her line of work.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Are there jobs available?

0:23:49 > 0:23:52And where would I go to find out where they are?

0:23:52 > 0:23:56There certainly are jobs available in special schools,

0:23:56 > 0:24:00but also supporting students in mainstream schools.

0:24:00 > 0:24:05Most of the advertising happens through the local newspapers.

0:24:05 > 0:24:10Good news again, but will Lorraine fare as well on the financial front?

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Middle of the range teacher aides

0:24:13 > 0:24:16would be earning about 16.50 an hour.

0:24:16 > 0:24:21Because you're only working 25 hours a week over 44 weeks,

0:24:21 > 0:24:27that would work out somewhere between NZ18,500-NZ19,000.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30That equates to just over £10,000,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33slightly more than Lorraine gets at home.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35Has the day addressed some of her concerns?

0:24:35 > 0:24:39I am just so happy that this segment of my big question...

0:24:39 > 0:24:43Being 50 is something I can't change,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47so it has to be either they accept me as I am or it's a no-goer,

0:24:47 > 0:24:51and today, it was so positive, I don't see a barrier any more.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54After a disappointing start to their week,

0:24:54 > 0:24:56work opportunities have proved much more positive.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59But are Lorraine and Richelle a step closer

0:24:59 > 0:25:01to making a new life together in New Zealand?

0:25:01 > 0:25:04We've had a really interesting day today in Auckland

0:25:04 > 0:25:06looking at all the job possibilities and,

0:25:06 > 0:25:11based on what we found out today, we're going to vote for...

0:25:22 > 0:25:24- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27- Really?- Oh, yeah. - Wow!- It's been awesome.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30It's been really interesting and I've been blown away by what

0:25:30 > 0:25:34- I've found out.- Fantastic. Auckland's winning you over, then?

0:25:34 > 0:25:36New Zealand, no surprise.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39It's just amazing, I was blown away by how much support is given,

0:25:39 > 0:25:45the salary, and the chance to progress within the career and grow.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47That's exactly the path I'd love to take.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56Exploring work options proved to be a really positive experience

0:25:56 > 0:25:58for both Richelle and Lorraine,

0:25:58 > 0:26:01but Richelle knows there's a long way to go yet

0:26:01 > 0:26:06if she's to persuade her mum to move halfway around the world.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Could a day experiencing the New Zealand lifestyle help?

0:26:12 > 0:26:15The country's landscape makes it perfect

0:26:15 > 0:26:17for a wealth of outdoor activities.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22In the UK, Richelle loves off-road driving,

0:26:22 > 0:26:26so the day gets underway with a four-wheel-drive experience,

0:26:26 > 0:26:28offering her the chance to combine her hobby

0:26:28 > 0:26:30with her love of the great outdoors.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32I feel so excited to actually

0:26:32 > 0:26:35be on a four-wheel-drive tour in New Zealand.

0:26:35 > 0:26:36It's going to be so good.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40- LORRAINE:- Oooh!

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Not sure Lorraine is quite as excited!

0:26:43 > 0:26:45LORRAINE SQUEALS

0:26:45 > 0:26:48It certainly beats rush hour in Kinmel Bay.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50Can you see where we're going?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52Go on, Richelle, put your foot down!

0:26:59 > 0:27:00If they move to New Zealand,

0:27:00 > 0:27:04this is something Richelle could enjoy on a regular basis.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Oh, my God, that was so cool! That was really, really steep!

0:27:07 > 0:27:08I just love four-wheel driving.

0:27:08 > 0:27:13But if her dream is to avoid biting the dust, she needs to remember

0:27:13 > 0:27:16today's about selling the lifestyle to her mum, too.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18Oh, my God, what an experience!

0:27:18 > 0:27:22I don't think it would be quite for me because I would be so frightened,

0:27:22 > 0:27:24I can't even see a track for a vehicle.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28To go for it on a track that doesn't look like a track...

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Phew! It just blows your mind.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Blows your mind.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35The jury's still out.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Perhaps a chance to do as the locals do,

0:27:37 > 0:27:40and explore the scenery from the seat of a saddle,

0:27:40 > 0:27:42will be more to Lorraine's taste.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45I think it was last year when we went out on bikes last.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49So cold. It takes the joy out of it then, doesn't it?

0:27:49 > 0:27:53If you've got a place like this, with this view and these houses...

0:27:53 > 0:27:56- Oh, yeah, beautiful. - Absolutely fabulous.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59Sounds like this could be more Lorraine's pace,

0:27:59 > 0:28:01and Richelle's happy, too.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03I want to be more active,

0:28:03 > 0:28:06and when you've got the weather and the scenery, you can't beat it.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09New Zealand could definitely offer Richelle more action,

0:28:09 > 0:28:13but she knows her mum still faces a difficult decision.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16If she wants to stay at home with Nan,

0:28:16 > 0:28:20obviously that's her decision, but I've got to go where my heart is,

0:28:20 > 0:28:22and my heart's definitely in New Zealand.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24That's a real turning point for Richelle,

0:28:24 > 0:28:28who until now couldn't see a future in New Zealand without her mum.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31But if Lorraine decides to stay put in the UK,

0:28:31 > 0:28:33it might be her only option.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36I can see a fabulous lifestyle here.

0:28:36 > 0:28:37But...

0:28:37 > 0:28:44would I be happy knowing my mum is alone and lonely in the UK?

0:28:44 > 0:28:46And me as her only surviving daughter,

0:28:46 > 0:28:5011,000 miles away, having a good time? Whoop-whoop!

0:28:50 > 0:28:52I don't think that would sit well with me,

0:28:52 > 0:28:55I don't think that's right at all.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57No matter what Lorraine decides,

0:28:57 > 0:29:01she's going to have to say goodbye to someone she loves.

0:29:01 > 0:29:05If Richelle decided to move to New Zealand without me,

0:29:05 > 0:29:09I would feel lost, but it is only natural progress.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12I know I would feel lost, cos, since the age of three,

0:29:12 > 0:29:15it's only been her and I.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19If it has to be, it has to be. She's her own person.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24Tough decisions lie ahead but, based on what they've done today,

0:29:24 > 0:29:26has Lorraine seen enough to want more

0:29:26 > 0:29:29of the lifestyle New Zealand could offer?

0:29:30 > 0:29:33We've explored so much of what New Zealand's got to offer

0:29:33 > 0:29:37lifestyle-wise and, based on our experiences today, we vote for...

0:29:43 > 0:29:45- New Zealand!- New Zealand.

0:29:45 > 0:29:49- Really?!- Yeah. - It really is winning you over!

0:29:49 > 0:29:51It is, I've got to say. It's been an awesome day

0:29:51 > 0:29:55and it's just unbelievable what opportunities there are.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59And today has just... It just opens your eyes to possibilities,

0:29:59 > 0:30:00and I'm really impressed.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03- Really good, I'm really glad. - Whoop-whoop!

0:30:08 > 0:30:12Lorraine seems to be coming round, but could mother and daughter

0:30:12 > 0:30:14actually afford the lifestyle Richelle wants?

0:30:14 > 0:30:19They believe their house back in the UK is worth £150,000,

0:30:19 > 0:30:22so we sent round two estate agents to find out for sure.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25God, it doesn't seem like our place, does it?

0:30:27 > 0:30:32Yes, very nice lounge-dining room, nicely decorated.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35I can smell... It smells like they might have had a dog

0:30:35 > 0:30:39and I'm afraid that odours are really a no-no,

0:30:39 > 0:30:42so I would suggest that they got some air fresheners in.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45- THEY LAUGH - Cheeky devil!- I know, right?

0:30:45 > 0:30:48The kitchen's a nice size with fitted units

0:30:48 > 0:30:51and plenty of room for appliances.

0:30:51 > 0:30:54And there's also a nice, modern gas central heating system.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58Here we are now in the master bedroom.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01It's a double bedroom with fitted wardrobes,

0:31:01 > 0:31:04which are nicely presentable.

0:31:04 > 0:31:09A good-sized space for a double bed, so a good room as a master bedroom.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11This bedroom's particularly appealing,

0:31:11 > 0:31:14nice position overlooking the lovely garden.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17Still has some nice modern features, wall features,

0:31:17 > 0:31:20nice and bright and neutral colours, easier for somebody moving in.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23You could put any colour in there, couldn't you, really?

0:31:23 > 0:31:25Modern bathroom, very pleased to see.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29It's a white suite, which is very typical today.

0:31:29 > 0:31:30Yes, very nice room.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Horrible tiles.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35A three-bed, three-bedroom, detached property in this location

0:31:35 > 0:31:39in today's market, we would hope to achieve in the region of 140-145.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43For a quick sale, I would suggest putting it on the market at 139,950.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45- No chance.- No!

0:31:45 > 0:31:49For this particular bungalow, in this particular location,

0:31:49 > 0:31:53I would advise an achieve sale price of £140,000,

0:31:53 > 0:31:59and for a quick sale I would recommend no more than 135.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03That's £10,000 less than they were hoping for.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06It used to be quite an expensive area, didn't it? But...

0:32:06 > 0:32:09It's a sign of the times, I think.

0:32:09 > 0:32:10It's not a great start.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14But can number-cruncher Richelle makes the figures work

0:32:14 > 0:32:18when comparing potential living costs in New Zealand to the UK?

0:32:18 > 0:32:21First up is a comparison of their weekly food bill.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23Milk, four pints.

0:32:23 > 0:32:28NZ, the difference is £1.75.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30- For milk.- Wow.- For four pints.

0:32:30 > 0:32:32- So it's cheaper in the UK.- Mm-hmm.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34Richelle will need to think quick

0:32:34 > 0:32:37if she's going to keep Lorraine onside.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41Chicken is cheaper, and rice is cheaper in New Zealand, as well.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44But are they cheap enough to make a difference to the food bill?

0:32:44 > 0:32:47That's 47.99 in the UK...

0:32:47 > 0:32:50and 73.84 in New Zealand,

0:32:50 > 0:32:54so that is £25.85 difference.

0:32:54 > 0:32:55And this is a weekly shop,

0:32:55 > 0:32:58so you're looking at £100 a month difference.

0:32:58 > 0:32:59- Yeah.- Roughly.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05- £100. It's quite a big... - It is quite a lot.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08Even basing their calculations on the cheapest property they saw,

0:33:08 > 0:33:11it's suddenly looking like an expensive move.

0:33:11 > 0:33:16But will Richelle's pay increase be enough to pull them out of a hole?

0:33:16 > 0:33:21But we haven't taken into account the combined income,

0:33:21 > 0:33:24which is £637 per month,

0:33:24 > 0:33:26so that leaves us...

0:33:26 > 0:33:30We're £415.55 better off in New Zealand.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34- A month?- A month. - For real?- For real.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36- Oh, my God, that sounds really good. - It is pretty good.

0:33:36 > 0:33:42- Let me write that down, how much are we better off?- £415.55.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47Well recovered, Richelle. That's a great result.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49So, now they're in the money,

0:33:49 > 0:33:52how are Richelle and Lorraine going to vote?

0:33:52 > 0:33:56Today we did a comparison check on the cost of living in New Zealand

0:33:56 > 0:34:00and, based on what we found today, we're going to vote for...

0:34:09 > 0:34:11- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13- Really?- Yes.- Wow!

0:34:13 > 0:34:14This is looking really good.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17I was quite surprised. With a mortgage,

0:34:17 > 0:34:20as well as the other factors involved in cost of living,

0:34:20 > 0:34:24I thought it was quite favourable.

0:34:24 > 0:34:25- Yeah.- I was really surprised.

0:34:25 > 0:34:30Over £400 better off to live in New Zealand a month.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34Yeah, I was quite surprised. So for that reason I voted for New Zealand.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43It's another good result for Richelle, but Lorraine's always

0:34:43 > 0:34:47been concerned that starting again in a new country may not be as easy

0:34:47 > 0:34:50for her as it will be for her 18-year-old daughter.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53They're both keen country music fans at home,

0:34:53 > 0:34:56so we've arranged a trip to the local line dancing club

0:34:56 > 0:35:00to give them a taste of the social scene New Zealand could offer.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Is it a good way of making friends, joining this kind of club?

0:35:03 > 0:35:05Absolutely.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07I mean, that wasn't my prime reason for doing it, it was exercise

0:35:07 > 0:35:12and I liked the music, but, yes, I've made great friends.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16And then we're socialising outside line dancing, as well.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19There are quite a few groups around, so some of these ladies go to

0:35:19 > 0:35:21several different classes during the week,

0:35:21 > 0:35:25they might go three or four times, so you get different groups

0:35:25 > 0:35:30of friends and then you get to know other ones and different groups.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33- That's brilliant.- It's awesome.

0:35:33 > 0:35:37It's small steps, but Richelle's dream of having her mum by her side

0:35:37 > 0:35:39in New Zealand could be getting closer.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43It looks like they're getting into the groove.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46COUNTRY MUSIC PLAYS

0:35:48 > 0:35:49She's certainly enjoying the music,

0:35:49 > 0:35:53but has this evening given Lorraine the answer she's looking for?

0:35:53 > 0:35:55It's a really good way of making friends,

0:35:55 > 0:35:58and it could be just that little thing extra that entices me

0:35:58 > 0:36:03to think, "Wow, I could go for it," you know?

0:36:03 > 0:36:04Just on something like this.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09BOTH: Yee-hah!

0:36:15 > 0:36:17It's been a positive week for Richelle,

0:36:17 > 0:36:20as, one by one, here mum's concerns

0:36:20 > 0:36:22about a life in New Zealand have vanished.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25But with Lorraine still worried about leaving her own mum,

0:36:25 > 0:36:28the biggest hurdle is still to come, as the pair sits down

0:36:28 > 0:36:32to messages from their loved ones back in the UK.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Hello, Lorraine, hello, Ric.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37I hope you're finding what you're looking for, my love,

0:36:37 > 0:36:39and the weather's kind to you.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Hiya, Lorraine, hiya, Richelle.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43I hope you've had a fab time,

0:36:43 > 0:36:46I hope it's been what you expect it to be

0:36:46 > 0:36:48and I hope you haven't enjoyed it too much.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53Hi, Ricky, I hope everything's going all right.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55I know you'll be enjoying it already,

0:36:55 > 0:36:58and I just hope you're having fun, mainly.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01Hello, Lorraine, hello, Richelle, I hope your week has gone

0:37:01 > 0:37:04really well, I hope the weather's been really good.

0:37:04 > 0:37:09They're the loveliest two people I've ever met in my life.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12You have to go a long way to meet anybody like that.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16I know I'm their mother, and you shouldn't talk like that,

0:37:16 > 0:37:18but I'm telling the truth.

0:37:18 > 0:37:22Smashing two people, inside and out.

0:37:22 > 0:37:26Lovely. I love them to bits.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28- Don't tell them! - SHE LAUGHS

0:37:29 > 0:37:33Ricky is a fun, bubbly, crazy,

0:37:33 > 0:37:37generally nice, happy person,

0:37:37 > 0:37:40and I'm glad I met her.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44It'd be a fantastic opportunity for her.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Part of me doesn't want her to go,

0:37:46 > 0:37:48even though I don't see her very often,

0:37:48 > 0:37:52and then I think, well, it would be a nice holiday to New Zealand,

0:37:52 > 0:37:55as well, if she does, maybe once every few years,

0:37:55 > 0:37:57to catch up with her.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00If they move.... See, I'm starting already, sorry.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03Oh, I'll miss her terrible.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06I know she's there when I need her, do you know what I mean?

0:38:06 > 0:38:07And I think sometimes a friend

0:38:07 > 0:38:11hasn't got to be living on the doorstep.

0:38:11 > 0:38:16They can be just somebody you know is there for you, you know?

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Oh, I'll miss them with all my heart, but...

0:38:20 > 0:38:23it's life, I accept that.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25I'm not a one to sit and cry.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28As long as they're together and look after each other,

0:38:28 > 0:38:31and they're happy, that's the main.

0:38:31 > 0:38:33That's what I do think.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37No, I don't want Richelle to go, I'd rather she stayed...

0:38:38 > 0:38:41..with all her friends.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44Ric, Lorraine, you've been out there for a week,

0:38:44 > 0:38:47you should know what it's like, you should go with your instincts

0:38:47 > 0:38:49and go and have a ball.

0:38:49 > 0:38:53As long as you find happiness, your old mum is happy.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56One of these days I'll knock on your door -

0:38:56 > 0:38:59Ric, get that cup of Oxo on.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02I'll be out there to see you.

0:39:02 > 0:39:06All the very best, love, I'll miss you both, bye.

0:39:07 > 0:39:11That was a bit more emotional than I thought it was going to be.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16And, listening to my mum, she didn't seem

0:39:16 > 0:39:18very positive there about...

0:39:18 > 0:39:23She seemed like waving us off, that's how I felt, that she was...

0:39:23 > 0:39:27It's the final sort of, "I won't hold you back, but adios."

0:39:27 > 0:39:31So it didn't seem any input from her that she would

0:39:31 > 0:39:34contemplate coming with us.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38Watching messages from loved ones is incredibly emotional,

0:39:38 > 0:39:40and for Lorraine it's brought home

0:39:40 > 0:39:43the heartbreaking dilemma she now faces -

0:39:43 > 0:39:46having to choose between her mum and her daughter.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55Richelle's been dreaming of a life in New Zealand for almost 10 years,

0:39:55 > 0:39:57even though she'd never been.

0:39:58 > 0:40:02It was my dream to come out and it hasn't hindered my dream in any way

0:40:02 > 0:40:06coming out, in fact it's escalated it, which is brilliant.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09It's just an amazing country.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13- It's very similar to Wales, mind. - Yeah, it's beautiful.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16But Richelle's biggest challenge was always going to be convincing

0:40:16 > 0:40:20mum Lorraine to start a new life on the other side of the world.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24It's been quite a turbulent journey for me, emotionally,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26and from the beginning,

0:40:26 > 0:40:30when Richelle started to say about New Zealand,

0:40:30 > 0:40:33I was a bit torn inwardly,

0:40:33 > 0:40:36because, obviously, I'd never been to New Zealand,

0:40:36 > 0:40:41and I'd never been 50 before, so that was a new adventure, as well.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44The week's assured Lorraine she's young enough to start again,

0:40:44 > 0:40:49but Richelle knows she's still torn over leaving her mum back in the UK.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52My nan is quite a frail lady, she's 82 now,

0:40:52 > 0:40:55and I think my mum would stay with her.

0:40:57 > 0:40:59Could this be the end of the road

0:40:59 > 0:41:01for Richelle and Lorraine's life together?

0:41:03 > 0:41:07This is my dream and there's no going back for me.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10I've had an incredible journey with Richelle, seeing her grow up

0:41:10 > 0:41:15and tutoring and mentoring her, and I really want to carry on that.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19Even if it's from a distance when she's got her own family,

0:41:19 > 0:41:22I really want to carry on doing that.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24With her hopes still pinned on New Zealand,

0:41:24 > 0:41:27Richelle's future with her mum is uncertain.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29It all comes down to this moment.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33Will Lorraine's final decision delight or devastate her daughter?

0:41:34 > 0:41:37We have both had a really adventurous week out in New Zealand

0:41:37 > 0:41:41and, based on all our findings, we vote for...

0:41:46 > 0:41:47New Zealand.

0:41:47 > 0:41:48UK.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52Nah, only joking! New Zealand!

0:41:52 > 0:41:54- Really?!- Yes, really!

0:41:54 > 0:41:59I've got a feeling I don't even want to go on that plane to go home.

0:41:59 > 0:42:04I know! How weird is that? I just feel that this is it.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07- My heart sank so much then! - I had you.

0:42:07 > 0:42:12- I really don't want to get on that plane to go home.- Wow.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14- I am so glad. Really?- Yeah.

0:42:14 > 0:42:18I'd say give us 18 months and we'll be there.

0:42:18 > 0:42:22- I really feel that strong about it. - That's amazing.- I want to die here.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Not particularly this week...

0:42:24 > 0:42:25THEY LAUGH

0:42:25 > 0:42:29Not this week, not for a long time, but I just feel like this is it.

0:42:29 > 0:42:34I want to restart here, I want to retire, and that's it.

0:42:34 > 0:42:35Wow! Oh, my gosh!

0:42:35 > 0:42:38That's amazing! So, 18 months?

0:42:38 > 0:42:4018 months, let's do it, let's get out here.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43- That sounds awesome. Get the house up for sale.- Whoop-whoop!

0:42:45 > 0:42:47- Argh!- Whoop-whoop!

0:42:56 > 0:42:58When it came to the final decision,

0:42:58 > 0:43:02Lorraine just wasn't ready to let her daughter fly the nest,

0:43:02 > 0:43:05and Richelle got the result she'd been desperately hoping for.

0:43:05 > 0:43:08Thanks to her nan's blessing, Richelle could be packing

0:43:08 > 0:43:12for a life in New Zealand sooner than she thought with her mum.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15We wish them the happiest of times.
