0:00:02 > 0:00:05If you were desperate to spend more time with the people you love,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08would you consider going to the other side of the world to

0:00:08 > 0:00:12achieve it, even if that meant risking everything you know

0:00:12 > 0:00:14and care about in the UK?

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Years working away from home has taken a heavy

0:00:17 > 0:00:20toll on John Woodland's family life.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22I understood why he had to go away.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26It was just horrible.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28He's desperate for more time with them

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and believes Australia's the answer.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33This is my dream, this is, love, and be home every single day,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35spend time with you.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37But with daughter Chloe not wanting to move...

0:00:37 > 0:00:39It's quite scary to be in, like,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42a completely different country the other side of the world.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46..and wife Kerry unwilling to leave her at home...

0:00:46 > 0:00:50I don't physically feel that I could leave her in this country

0:00:50 > 0:00:52and move over with just me and John.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56..will a trial week down under be enough to convince the whole

0:00:56 > 0:00:58family to make the move?

0:01:21 > 0:01:25Australia offers the chance of an ideal family life to more

0:01:25 > 0:01:29than 35,000 Brits who emigrate there every year.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33With its mild climate and beautiful beaches, it's easy to see why.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35But it doesn't work out for everyone,

0:01:35 > 0:01:39and for many, the dream ends up back where it started.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43John Woodland is missing out on family life,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46and he's convinced that a move down under would give him the time

0:01:46 > 0:01:49he desperately needs with his wife and daughter.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52Ahead of him lies just one week to persuade them

0:01:52 > 0:01:56that to move to Australia is worth giving up their lives in the UK.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00After a lengthy delay in London,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03the Woodlands touch down in Perth much later than scheduled.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06It's been more than 24 hours since they left home

0:02:06 > 0:02:10and the marathon journey of over 10,000 miles has had an impact.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- Our flight was very, very long. - It was very, very tiring.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17They may be worn out, but they're raring to go.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Now we're here, you know, it's not just talk and a maybe.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22It's going to be making-our-mind-up time.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Just to see, really, what Australia's got to offer

0:02:26 > 0:02:29and what my dad has been bragging about!

0:02:29 > 0:02:32And if it is for me, really.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34I'm quite excited about the whole thing at the moment.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36So let the adventure begin, I say.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Ahead is a week that could change their lives for ever.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45The Woodlands are from Gwent in South Wales.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50They are John, Kerry and daughter Chloe, who's 19.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Australia has been on John's mind

0:02:52 > 0:02:56since he visited 17 years ago on a posting with the Army.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00I thought, "What a beautiful country!" So laid-back, so relaxed.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01When John returned from Australia,

0:03:01 > 0:03:05he was really excited about what he'd experienced out there,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and for a long while after that, he did say, you know,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10it's something that we should perhaps think about in the future.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13John was an HGV driver in the Army.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16When he left the Forces, a lack of local jobs left him no choice

0:03:16 > 0:03:19but to carry on with that career.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23But all the time on the road has meant long spells away from home.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25I have had sole responsibility for Chloe's...

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Um...

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Bringing Chloe up, for looking after the house,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33for doing everything, really, you know, that normally a family would do together,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35'I've done everything alone.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40It does make you a little bit resentful of the other person for leaving you in that situation,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44but at the same time, you are aware that it's a necessity.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Providing for his family meant John completely missed

0:03:47 > 0:03:49out on Chloe's childhood.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52SHE SNIFFS

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Not being able to see him through the week,

0:03:55 > 0:04:00not, like, him being able to see me grow up, be who I am today, really.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08It's a painful situation the whole family feel can't go on any longer.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12Desperate for change, John thinks a move down under could be the answer.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16A perfect outcome in Australia would be

0:04:16 > 0:04:21to find a job where I am working six till four, or four till six,

0:04:21 > 0:04:22whatever hours it is,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25but being home every single day to spend more time with my family,

0:04:25 > 0:04:29going for walks, take my wife to the pub for a drink,

0:04:29 > 0:04:30that's what I want to do.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Both John and Kerry feel Australia could offer Chloe

0:04:39 > 0:04:41a much better future.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43I work in a chip shop.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46I go to college and I do nail technology.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49I would like her to experience more out of life than

0:04:49 > 0:04:52living in a small town and spending all her days here.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55It's the opportunities which she could have over there.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57- And her children, isn't it? - And her children.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00And to give her those opportunities, really.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04But while Chloe can see some appeal in moving far from home,

0:05:04 > 0:05:07it would mean saying goodbye to her boyfriend.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11'I've been with Sam for around a year now.'

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Don't really want to lose him.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Kerry knows that without her daughter agreeing to a move,

0:05:16 > 0:05:19John's dream could disappear.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21If Chloe decided that she wouldn't want to

0:05:21 > 0:05:24live in Australia, I think that the whole idea, really,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28would just be forgotten because I don't physically feel that

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I could leave her in this country and move over with just me and John.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36And I do feel a bit pressured into going a bit.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40Like, if I don't go, what will happen to my family, really?

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Saying goodbye to loved ones could also be

0:05:43 > 0:05:45a massive sticking point for Kerry.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50The prospect of leaving my family and friends is huge for me.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54But despite her emotional ties to the UK, Kerry realises

0:05:54 > 0:05:55something has to give,

0:05:55 > 0:05:59and John believes they could have a much better lifestyle in Australia.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03I can't see ourselves sort of carrying on as we are now for ever.

0:06:03 > 0:06:04I think that would just be sort of...

0:06:04 > 0:06:07We would be silly to do that, and it would just be a waste.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09It's been a dream of mine for a long, long time,

0:06:09 > 0:06:11just to spend some quality time with Kerry.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15She's missed so much, and I've missed so much of not being with her.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18The Woodlands are at crisis point.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20John's job is wrecking family life,

0:06:20 > 0:06:24and he's convinced Australia offers a better future.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Ahead of him is just one week to convince Chloe and Kerry

0:06:27 > 0:06:32that his dream is worth giving up the close ties they have in the UK.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Then the family will face the biggest decision of their lives -

0:06:36 > 0:06:40whether to stay in the UK, or make the move down under a permanent one.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48The Woodlands are spending their trial week in Perth.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51It's the country's fastest-growing major city,

0:06:51 > 0:06:54and with less than 5% unemployment, it's a

0:06:54 > 0:06:59popular destination for new arrivals seeking a fresh start down under.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03It's late and dark as the family arrive at their temporary home.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Hopefully, it won't disappoint.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- Quite big, though, isn't it?- Yeah. I like the open plan.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I like the kitchen and the living area all together.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- Quite a big telly, isn't it? - John settles in right away.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- Put the kettle on, love! - But Chloe's not so keen.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23- Do you like it?- No. - Really?- Yeah.- Why?- It's nice.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- I just don't think it's nothing compared to what we've got back home.- No.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Perhaps not the start John was hoping for,

0:07:29 > 0:07:33but what they can see outside looks a bit more promising.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35- Oh, this is nice, John.- Is it? - We've got a glass roof.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39- Massive out here.- I know.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42- It's quite secluded, isn't it, at the back.- Yeah.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44As everyone settles in to their temporary base,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Kerry knows her husband's already set on a move.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Even now, on the first day, just starting off, I think

0:07:50 > 0:07:53that John is already sold on the idea!

0:07:53 > 0:07:56I think that if you asked him to vote now, he would say Australia,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58without even having a good look round.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01But if John's to get the whole family to emigrate to the

0:08:01 > 0:08:03other side of the world, he'll have to work hard

0:08:03 > 0:08:06at convincing Chloe to buy into his dream.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10It's quite scary to be in, like, a completely different country

0:08:10 > 0:08:13the other side of the world and knowing that this is somewhere

0:08:13 > 0:08:15that I could potentially be living.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19Hopefully, the coming week will be enough to unite the family once

0:08:19 > 0:08:20and for all.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23This could give us an opportunity of a lifetime.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26But at the end of the day, I wouldn't force my wife or my daughter

0:08:26 > 0:08:28to do something they wouldn't want to do.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30The whole point of coming is to hopefully make

0:08:30 > 0:08:33a decision that we all agree on.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36But obviously, if that doesn't happen, then we are back to the drawing board.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Back in the UK, home for the Woodlands is this £80,000

0:08:44 > 0:08:48three-bedroom terraced house in Tredegar in Gwent, South Wales.

0:08:48 > 0:08:49The area's very pretty.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52We have a lot of countryside and mountains, and I feel that if we

0:08:52 > 0:08:56move to Australia, we would probably like to live in one of the suburbs.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00We'd like that nice community feel that we have here in Tredegar.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Just, like, meet people and have the good old barbecue-y stuff

0:09:03 > 0:09:06and things like that, isn't it, really?

0:09:06 > 0:09:09I'd like just a modest property, really.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I mean, obviously, I think everyone's dream is to have a big house,

0:09:12 > 0:09:14but I think that that's less important.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17I think the most important thing for us is just having a base

0:09:17 > 0:09:20that you can call home. Obviously, a nice house.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23I mean, finances dependent.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25I know that Chloe would love to have a pool,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28but I think the most important thing is that it's just a family home

0:09:28 > 0:09:31and just somewhere that you're happy.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34The Woodlands would rent if they move down under.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37We'll show them three different properties based on what

0:09:37 > 0:09:41they can afford, their ideal home and something in between.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Only after seeing what's on offer will

0:09:43 > 0:09:46they find out how much each one costs.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49The first property is in a suburb of Trinity, a fast-growing

0:09:49 > 0:09:54seaside town 35 minutes' drive north of Perth city centre.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57With every home just a stroll away from Western Australia's

0:09:57 > 0:10:00beautiful coastline, and the community feel

0:10:00 > 0:10:04the Woodlands are looking for, this area should be just the ticket.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Will this modern three-bedroom showhome get

0:10:06 > 0:10:09the house-hunting off to a good start?

0:10:09 > 0:10:13- It's nice, that, isn't it?- Lovely flooring.- Absolutely.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16- Do you like this, Kerry? - The house is lovely.- Wow!

0:10:16 > 0:10:20- The house is lovely, Chloe.- This is really, really nice.- Isn't it?

0:10:20 > 0:10:23- This would be mine!- This would be your room.- Would it really?- Yeah.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28- It's looking good so far.- There you are, Chloe. There's your wardrobe.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29- I know.- Oh, man! Look at that!

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Chloe's always wanted a walk-in wardrobe.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36- Yeah.- My wardrobe's too small. I can't see all my clothes back home.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42- This is amazing! - Every girl's dream, Chloe!

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- And Kerry's loving the open-plan design.- This is lovely.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51- This is really nice.- It is, isn't it?

0:10:51 > 0:10:56And I quite like all the glass. The room is really light and airy.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01- Feels nice and sunny and bright.- Will outdoors get as positive a response?

0:11:01 > 0:11:03It's not a very big garden, though, Kerry, is it?

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- You've got the beach literally opposite.- Yeah.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07You have got the outside space,

0:11:07 > 0:11:09so you wouldn't be just confined to your garden.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Isn't John the one supposed to be doing the hard sell, Kerry?

0:11:13 > 0:11:15I think it's plenty big enough for our needs.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18And Chloe's very clear what her needs are.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21And we could fit a hot tub down over there, too.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Ah. So this is, I assume, like, a family bathroom.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30- That's quite a big shower. - Yeah. Which is plenty big enough.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32General-sized shower.

0:11:32 > 0:11:37Right, Chlo. I think this one might be your room! The artwork's OK.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40They're quite strange, aren't they? Funny eyes!

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- Overall, the house is very nice. - I really like this house.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47I think it's a lot better than our house back home.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50It's plenty big enough for the three of us.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55John should be pleased. It's a really positive start to the day.

0:11:55 > 0:12:00But will this house be within their £1,250 a month rental budget?

0:12:03 > 0:12:05- Shall we have a look?- Shall we?

0:12:05 > 0:12:06Go on, then, Chlo.

0:12:08 > 0:12:13- £1,210.- That's about what we planned, isn't it?

0:12:13 > 0:12:15That's not too bad at all. That would be manageable, I think.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18If we could afford a house like this, or we get a house like this

0:12:18 > 0:12:21on that sort of money, if we can get the jobs over here, then...

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Brilliant. Really pleased with that price.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Have we won you over yet, Chlo?- A little.

0:12:26 > 0:12:27HE LAUGHS

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Yes!

0:12:29 > 0:12:33The next property is in Tapping, 20 miles north of Perth.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36It's a quiet residential area five minutes from the amenities

0:12:36 > 0:12:39of the nearby town of Joondalup and close to the beach.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Will this stylish four-bedroom family home win the Woodlands' approval?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Oh, this is lovely, isn't it?

0:12:50 > 0:12:52This is like a little study.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54Should imagine it's a nice street where you get to

0:12:54 > 0:12:57meet your neighbours, you know, everyone's quite close by.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I quite like the little bit of grassed area at the front,

0:13:00 > 0:13:04the little sort of yard area.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06That could mean the location's right,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09and John may have spotted another upside.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- That's not going to be a walk-in wardrobe, is it?- Have a look.

0:13:15 > 0:13:16Oh!

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Go on, then. That's nice.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- That's lovely. It's huge, Chloe. - That's ticked one box.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23And then you've got the shower, the en suite.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Oh, this is nice. This is a good-sized room, sitting room.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31- Oh, this is lovely! - This is the living room, is it? - It is nice and cosy.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34You can imagine coming home from work and just having a nice

0:13:34 > 0:13:36relaxing night, couldn't you, just watching TV in here.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41Kerry's ready to move in and the tour has hardly begun.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47- Oh, man!- Wow!- This is lovely! - Well, what can you say?- Yeah.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50This is probably definitely out of our price range, I think.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Absolutely massive.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- This is wow, isn't it?- Yeah. There's no other word for it.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57You can't explain it. It's absolutely beautiful.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- You'd never find anything like this back home.- No.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08This house may have a lot going for it,

0:14:08 > 0:14:11but there's one feature Kerry's not too keen on.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14The only thing I don't like about this room is the pool table in the middle.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17It's not something that you would expect in your front room.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19John doesn't mind.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- No, I think that's all right.- You like it?- Yeah.- You don't mind it?

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- That can stay in there, can't it, Chlo?- Yeah, we like that.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27That will stay there, Chloe, easily, yeah.

0:14:27 > 0:14:32- It's all going swimmingly well until Chloe spots a problem.- It's tiny!

0:14:32 > 0:14:34That's a massive walk-in room, that is.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Practical Kerry's got a suggestion.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39But you wouldn't need winter clothes in Australia,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- so you wouldn't need as much space. - Um...

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Not sure Chloe's buying that,

0:14:44 > 0:14:48and the wardrobe's not the only thing on the dinky side.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- This is smaller than the last bath. - Yeah, but it's nice, though, isn't it?

0:14:51 > 0:14:55- It's big enough for whatever you might need.- But this is the main bathroom, is it?

0:14:55 > 0:14:56You've got such big rooms everywhere else

0:14:56 > 0:14:59and they've just put the bathroom into a tiny little space.

0:14:59 > 0:15:03But there's one outdoor feature already installed which could bring Chloe round.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05It's just, you know, luxury, isn't it,

0:15:05 > 0:15:08to have a hot tub sat in the garden there.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10I like the garden, but I just...

0:15:11 > 0:15:14- You don't get the right feel for it? - Don't like the house itself.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17- You want to feel comfortable in it. - No, I think it's a lovely house.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21- I just don't think it's... - Not for you?- Not for me, no.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Even with the hot tub, this house just isn't wowing Chloe,

0:15:26 > 0:15:29but John and Kerry could see themselves living here.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31I think this house is lovely.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33I think it's got a lovely size, it's got plenty of bedrooms

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- if people come to stay.- It is a nice house.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38I wouldn't have any qualms about living here.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40But is it somewhere they could afford to call

0:15:40 > 0:15:43home on their £1,250 rental budget?

0:15:44 > 0:15:45What do you reckon?

0:15:45 > 0:15:48- I don't know. No idea.- Cheaper than the last place or dearer?- No, no.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Probably a lot more expensive.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55That's almost £200 a month over budget, but...

0:15:55 > 0:15:57- Oh!- Not that much dearer.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01I was expecting this to be hugely... if not double the last one.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04I'm really shocked and I'm really pleased, cos that's still

0:16:04 > 0:16:07affordable for us. And it's a good price, isn't it?

0:16:07 > 0:16:10- But you still don't like the house? - Still don't like the house!

0:16:10 > 0:16:13With two properties down, the pressure's on to find somewhere

0:16:13 > 0:16:16the whole family would move around the world for.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21Could the final house be the dream home? It's also in the Tapping area.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24With four bedrooms, this house could offer the space

0:16:24 > 0:16:28and comfort they want. But will the price fit the Woodlands' budget?

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- It's a nice little garden, John. - It is.- Little bit of a driveway.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35- It's quite a nice estate, isn't it? - With a garage.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38First impressions are good. What about the interior?

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Oh, that's lovely, that is.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45- That is lovely in there. - I do like this, yeah.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49I like the way it's quite private as well. Not being onlooked.

0:16:49 > 0:16:50No, that's true.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- Lovely big storage cupboards.- Wow!

0:16:55 > 0:16:59- I like that they've decorated it really nice.- They are nice.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02And again, you've got the nice wardrobes, you're saving all the space.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06They may be nice, but they're not walk-in yet.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09I've decided with the wide doors, get rid of the doors,

0:17:09 > 0:17:13- then put a wall there so I could have a walk-in wardrobe, then.- Really?

0:17:14 > 0:17:16Oh, it's nice and big.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19The bathroom's an improvement on the last property.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23- Do you think this is bigger? - Yeah, a lot bigger.- Do you?- Yeah.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25- It seems bigger, anyway. - There seems a lot of space in there.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29- Oh, dear me! - Oh, this is nice, isn't it?

0:17:31 > 0:17:32Lovely.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Why have you always got walk-in wardrobes and I haven't got any?

0:17:36 > 0:17:37That's it there.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40It's not as big as the last one, is it?

0:17:40 > 0:17:43- But it's plenty big enough for my stuff.- Yeah.- It's lovely.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- You can have a shelf, John. - That's good of you, Kerry!

0:17:48 > 0:17:54- It's a nice size, though, isn't it? Ah! There's yours!- I've got my own!

0:17:54 > 0:17:59- Look how happy he is!- I saw it, though.- That's more like it!

0:17:59 > 0:18:02And the master bedroom's got another attractive feature.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06- Got our own private porch.- Oh, it's private.- Oh, that's really nice.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08- Isn't it?- Yeah.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Kerry sitting down with her orange juice in the morning.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12But there might be a slight problem.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15I might have to get rid of the plants or trim them back a little bit.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18- Cos you're scared of spiders. - Scared of spiders.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21What?! A big Welshman like you, John?

0:18:23 > 0:18:28- Oh, this is lovely. Look at this, John. This is huge!- Oh, this is nice.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29This is huge.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32It's almost like two separate living areas, three separate living areas.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35- The size of the kitchen!- And the kitchen is absolutely massive.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39And there's an outdoor feature that should appeal to everyone.

0:18:39 > 0:18:40Oh, what's that there?

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Nice big fridge. Oh, and a pool!

0:18:49 > 0:18:51- That's nice, isn't it? - This is really nice.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Oh, that's lovely, isn't it? Again, it's undercover, which is perfect.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56You've even got sides, John, that you can pull down.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Have the Woodlands found their dream home?

0:19:00 > 0:19:01Yeah, this is more like it.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- This would be living the dream, wouldn't it?- It would be.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08Does make you see, doesn't it, what the opportunities could be.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11I really like this house.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- Stunning.- Amazing, yeah.- Yeah.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Chloe's reaction is just the response John was hoping for.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22It's everything that I would like, if I moved to Australia.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26- I actually haven't got anything negative to say about it.- Good girl!

0:19:26 > 0:19:28No, I know.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31It looks like this house is a big hit with everyone,

0:19:31 > 0:19:36but will the price be on the right side of their £1,250 a month budget?

0:19:36 > 0:19:39- Do you reckon it will be more or less?- Oh, definitely more.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41- Do you think so?- Yeah. - I reckon it'll be even.

0:19:41 > 0:19:42No, I think it's a lot more expensive.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45I think it's probably something that you'd have to look at sort of,

0:19:45 > 0:19:47you know, aiming for later on down the line.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51- I don't think it's something you can afford at this point. Are you ready? - Go on, then.

0:19:51 > 0:19:52Da-na-na-na...

0:19:52 > 0:19:57- That's more than £400 over budget.- Yeah. Yeah.- 1,667.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01- Yeah, it's quite high. - But Kerry's cautiously optimistic.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Surprisingly, it's cheaper than I thought it would be.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08I did think it'd be a lot more than that. Definitely.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10And I think that would be probably doable once you're

0:20:10 > 0:20:14sort of established in jobs, you know, the three of us working.

0:20:14 > 0:20:16I wouldn't want second best,

0:20:16 > 0:20:19so I would work hard and then get something like this, I would.

0:20:22 > 0:20:26So what have the Woodlands made of Perth properties?

0:20:26 > 0:20:27The first house was within budget,

0:20:27 > 0:20:30but the size of the garden let it down.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Property number two was somewhere Kerry and John could call home,

0:20:34 > 0:20:37but Chloe wasn't convinced.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41The final house had the wow factor and a price tag to match,

0:20:41 > 0:20:45but if the Woodlands can find the right jobs, it could be affordable.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47So have they seen enough to persuade them

0:20:47 > 0:20:49to give up their home in the UK?

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Based on the properties we've seen today, we are voting for...

0:21:05 > 0:21:10- Australia.- Australia.- Australia. - Ah! So why did you vote Australia?

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Cos I think the houses over here are a lot better than

0:21:13 > 0:21:15- the ones in the UK.- I'm the same.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18I don't think you can deny the fact that the houses are lovely.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20And seeing house three, that just nailed it for me.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22- Yeah.- Yeah.- Australia!

0:21:22 > 0:21:26- Absolutely. Well done, girl! - It's the perfect start for John.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28With Kerry and Chloe both voting for Australia,

0:21:28 > 0:21:31his dream has taken a huge step forward.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40Their ideal home will come at a cost, so if the move down under

0:21:40 > 0:21:44is to happen, it's crucial that John and Kerry find the jobs to fund it.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Kerry's the main visa applicant.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50Back in the UK, she's an experienced midwife.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I've been a midwife for seven years.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56I've enjoyed the job, even though it can be very, very stressful

0:21:56 > 0:21:58and demanding.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02I do feel very settled here and very supported, you know,

0:22:02 > 0:22:06with my colleagues, and I do feel that going to a new trust

0:22:06 > 0:22:10and a new area, a new country, would be quite daunting.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13We've arranged for Kerry to spend some time

0:22:13 > 0:22:15at Joondalup Health Campus,

0:22:15 > 0:22:19a local private hospital with a brand-new maternity wing.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22I'm a little bit nervous about this today,

0:22:22 > 0:22:24just going into sort of an environment that I'm not

0:22:24 > 0:22:26familiar with, but also excited to find out what the

0:22:26 > 0:22:29possibilities could be for me in the future.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Hopefully, Chris, a fellow midwife who moved from the UK,

0:22:32 > 0:22:34can put Kerry at ease about the move.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39I came about ten years ago, Kerry.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Quite daunting when you come initially.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45I left such a fabulous crowd of girls in the UK and I thought, "Oh!

0:22:45 > 0:22:48"I'm never going to get colleagues like they are again."

0:22:48 > 0:22:54- That was worrying.- Yeah.- But a lot of the girls that work here are English.

0:22:54 > 0:22:55Oh, right. OK.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58And a few of them had only been here a really short time when I came,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01so they were in the same boat as I was.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02- And they knew how you were feeling? - Yeah.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06And that feeling that you get, scared and you don't know the paperwork

0:23:06 > 0:23:09- and the layout's all different. - That's what I'm sort of thinking.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12It's going to be really daunting for me, you know, sort of being,

0:23:12 > 0:23:15like you said, being the new girl, being in a strange environment.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20It's John's job in the UK that's driven him towards emigrating.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24I've been driving HGV since the year 2000,

0:23:24 > 0:23:27and my cab is my apartment for the week.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29It's where I live all week. I sleep there.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32I've been doing it for eight years and going on a Monday,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34coming home on a Friday.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37He's hoping that working in Australia will give him

0:23:37 > 0:23:41the time with his family he so desperately wants.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44The type of job I want is to be home, if I can, every night.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50To find out about his work options in Perth, he meets Dean Hewitt,

0:23:50 > 0:23:54a driving recruitment expert who's also from the UK.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56You've sent your resume through, which is great.

0:23:56 > 0:24:02The licence you have, the Class 1, or C+E licence in the UK,

0:24:02 > 0:24:05is fully transferable into Australia.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08- So is there much opportunities for me, then, is there?- Absolutely.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Converting your licence is a straightforward process with

0:24:11 > 0:24:15the Department of Transport. It can take maybe a week or two.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17And once you've got your driving licence,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20you should be ready to be in full-time employment.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23To find work straightaway, that's...

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Well, that's put my mind at ease, that has.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30It seems like the opportunities could exist for John.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32But what about the all-important hours?

0:24:33 > 0:24:36We specialise in more Metro work,

0:24:36 > 0:24:40which means that you would be home of an evening. Um...

0:24:40 > 0:24:42And we work with you closely to advance your skills.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Metro work means working within a 60-mile radius of Perth city centre,

0:24:46 > 0:24:50so no long haul and no overnights.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53It's exactly the work-life balance John's been dreaming of,

0:24:53 > 0:24:56and it's about to get even better.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00You could be expecting to earn, on an average 50-hour week,

0:25:00 > 0:25:05Monday to Friday, between 80,000 and 100,000 per year.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09- 80,000 to 100,000 per year? - 80,000 to 100,000,

0:25:09 > 0:25:13working an average of a 50-hour week, Monday to Friday.

0:25:13 > 0:25:18- I'm well happy with that!- That's way beyond what John was expecting.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21I mean, back in the UK, I'm on about 40 grand.

0:25:21 > 0:25:22So that's almost...

0:25:22 > 0:25:26Well, that's 20 grand a year more! That's ideal, that is.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Absolutely.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32John could increase his salary by 50% with regular hours.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Will Kerry's prospects be as promising?

0:25:35 > 0:25:39Back at the hospital, unit manager Sandy's giving her a tour.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42It's a private maternity unit here on the first floor.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Our ward itself is 30 beds.

0:25:44 > 0:25:51We deliver approximately 800 to 900 babies privately in our hospital.

0:25:51 > 0:25:52Kerry's keen to know

0:25:52 > 0:25:55if opportunities will exist for her here.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58- Job prospects for you - absolutely fabulous.- Brilliant.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02And reviewing your CV and what you could bring to the table,

0:26:02 > 0:26:05- absolutely wonderful again. Great to have you on a team.- Good.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08That's really useful to know as well.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11- What type of salary would I be looking at earning?- OK.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15For the level of years of experience, starting salary, base salary,

0:26:15 > 0:26:16would be about 73,000.

0:26:16 > 0:26:21- That's really, really good. - That's roughly £49,000.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24At the moment, back in the UK, sort of working 37.5 hours,

0:26:24 > 0:26:28I would be earning about £30,000.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31So it's a considerable amount of money more.

0:26:31 > 0:26:36Kerry could increase her salary by £20,000 working in Australia.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39So if I decided in the near future to move over to Perth,

0:26:39 > 0:26:42- would it be worth me giving you a ring?- Absolutely.

0:26:42 > 0:26:47- Touch base, either by e-mails... - Yeah.- ..or telephone call.- Brilliant.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50- That's lovely. Thank you ever so much.- Absolute pleasure.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53It's been a hugely encouraging visit for Kerry.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56I feel really positive after speaking to Sandy today.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00I was very surprised at the increase in pay over in Australia,

0:27:00 > 0:27:02and I think it would make a huge difference

0:27:02 > 0:27:04to our decision of moving over,

0:27:04 > 0:27:08knowing that perhaps we could afford a nicer house and a better lifestyle.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10When John and Kerry meet to compare notes,

0:27:10 > 0:27:13they come to a staggering realisation.

0:27:13 > 0:27:18- So, between us, we could possibly earn £40,000 a year more.- Yeah.

0:27:18 > 0:27:2040 grand a year more.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26- What do you say to that? - Can't say nothing to that, can you?

0:27:26 > 0:27:28- That's shocking, isn't it? - I wasn't expecting as much.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32- I've got to be honest.- So how will they vote on working in Perth?

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Based on our work experience, we are voting for...

0:27:47 > 0:27:49- BOTH:- Australia!

0:27:50 > 0:27:52- This is my dream, this is, love.- Yeah.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56To work normal day shifts and be home every single day,

0:27:56 > 0:27:58spend time with you.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00John's on cloud nine.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02It's a better result than he could ever have hoped for.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04His dream could be on track.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08- I'm well happy, I am.- Brilliant. - Yeah. Brilliant.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16With such good salaries on offer,

0:28:16 > 0:28:20life in Australia's starting to look very promising for the Woodlands.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23But no amount of money will persuade Kerry to emigrate

0:28:23 > 0:28:26unless John can get Chloe on board.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Will a taste of the Aussie lifestyle help convince her

0:28:29 > 0:28:31down under's where the family should be?

0:28:32 > 0:28:36Spending time together is something the Woodlands just don't get

0:28:36 > 0:28:39enough of in the UK, so to give them a taste of what Australia

0:28:39 > 0:28:43could offer, they're visiting Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45It's been described as the second best

0:28:45 > 0:28:48beach in the world for families.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52A rare day out together is a reminder of what a move is all about.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00Watching Kerry and Chloe both enjoying themselves on the bikes,

0:29:00 > 0:29:02I haven't seen it before,

0:29:02 > 0:29:05cos, like I say, I work away a lot back home, and this family time

0:29:05 > 0:29:08together is quite limited.

0:29:08 > 0:29:12But to watch them today, yeah, it's been very entertaining.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15The Woodlands are a dog-loving family, so today,

0:29:15 > 0:29:19they volunteer to take rescue dog Frisbee for an afternoon walk.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21Frisbee! Come on, then, girl!

0:29:21 > 0:29:22HE WHISTLES

0:29:22 > 0:29:23Come on, then! Come on, then!

0:29:23 > 0:29:27Seeing Mum and Dad together is having a positive effect on Chloe.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33They never get time to go out and do stuff like this back in the UK.

0:29:33 > 0:29:35That's why I think the move out here would make them

0:29:35 > 0:29:37a lot more happy and a lot more...

0:29:37 > 0:29:39More like they're back

0:29:39 > 0:29:42in love together, rather than being separated all the time.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47A local pub gives the family the chance to consider what

0:29:47 > 0:29:50Australia could offer.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52To do something like this every weekend...

0:29:52 > 0:29:56Oh, yeah. It'd be nice, spend a lot more time with yourself.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58It does make you realise, doesn't it, what else there could be

0:29:58 > 0:30:02to life, rather than just sort of work and the house and TV.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05And John's pleased with the effect the day's had on Chloe.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07The more she has the time over here,

0:30:07 > 0:30:10the more that she realises that Australia

0:30:10 > 0:30:13could offer a lot more than what where we live does.

0:30:13 > 0:30:14I think she's coming round to the idea.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17At the beginning of the week, I was quite scared,

0:30:17 > 0:30:21just because I didn't know what there was to do.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23But today has given me...

0:30:23 > 0:30:27Well, opened my eyes, really, to see what you can do in Australia

0:30:27 > 0:30:30and that you don't have to pay a thing to do it, really.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34I don't think there's any time of today where none of us

0:30:34 > 0:30:35didn't have a smile on our face.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38Dream come true, really.

0:30:38 > 0:30:40- Cheers for a good day.- Cheers.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42Cheers.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45But time out has also made Kerry realise just how big

0:30:45 > 0:30:47a decision the family are facing.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50It's just a shame that if you did move over here, it would

0:30:50 > 0:30:51just be the three of us.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53It wouldn't be that you'd have your family there or the people

0:30:53 > 0:30:57- that you would normally spend days with.- Mm. Yeah. True enough.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59Based on lifestyle, though,

0:30:59 > 0:31:02would the family choose Australia or the UK?

0:31:02 > 0:31:05Based on our lifestyle activity today, we are voting for...

0:31:12 > 0:31:14- CHLOE AND KERRY:- Australia! - Australia.

0:31:14 > 0:31:15I enjoyed today.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18I think it was lovely to spend, you know, time doing something

0:31:18 > 0:31:21different, enjoying the weather and enjoying each other's company.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24- I enjoyed watching you enjoy yourself, I did.- Ah! - Watching you on the bicycle.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31A full house for the Aussie lifestyle has taken John

0:31:31 > 0:31:34another step closer to his dream,

0:31:34 > 0:31:37but as a reality, it could be out of reach.

0:31:37 > 0:31:38John and Kerry need to work out

0:31:38 > 0:31:41if they could afford to live down under.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43They'd rent out their UK home and think

0:31:43 > 0:31:48they could get a minimum of £400 a month to help with expenses in Oz.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51But will two local estate agents agree with that figure?

0:31:51 > 0:31:53Seems so weird, doesn't it?

0:31:56 > 0:31:58Looks absolutely massive!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00It's clear to me that the property is very well presented.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03It's tastefully decorated through the lounge and dining area,

0:32:03 > 0:32:06it's a good size, it's all double-glazed and, obviously,

0:32:06 > 0:32:08in line with what people are looking for these days.

0:32:08 > 0:32:12- That's nice.- Interesting. - That's good.- It does look quite nice, that does.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16Yeah, it's a nice cosy dining area,

0:32:16 > 0:32:18leading through into the kitchen

0:32:18 > 0:32:20and nice patio doors through to outside.

0:32:20 > 0:32:21Very good. Very good.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23This kitchen is a very good size again.

0:32:23 > 0:32:27They've done a nice finish in the high-gloss units which we see.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30And again, with the brick ceramic-tile splashbacks.

0:32:30 > 0:32:34- It doesn't look too bad, that, does it?- No.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37- The bathroom.- Oh, yeah, yeah, a good-sized bathroom.

0:32:37 > 0:32:39Um, nice to see a separate shower enclosure,

0:32:39 > 0:32:42which is also very handy for a family home.

0:32:42 > 0:32:47A good size double room. Um, very feminine. Pretty, obviously.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50This really is a fantastically sized bedroom, with the fitted

0:32:50 > 0:32:54wardrobes at the end is obviously an added incentive to the room as well.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57It's a great sized room, a real, real selling point to the house.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59In the current market conditions,

0:32:59 > 0:33:02this house should sell for in the region of 75,000.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05For a quick sale, I would expect 67,500.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07However, if they were prepared to put it on the rental market,

0:33:07 > 0:33:11I'd expect to achieve about £425 per calendar month.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15In the current market conditions, I would value this property at 75,000.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18For a quick sale, I would value it at 69,950.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20And for the rental market, I would hope to

0:33:20 > 0:33:23achieve in the region of £450 per calendar month.

0:33:23 > 0:33:24- Oh, even better.- Happy with that.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28- I'm happy with the rental.- 450 a month. Yeah.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31- I'm well happy with that.- Yeah. Brilliant.- Yeah.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34It's a good result. But what about the cost of living in Perth?

0:33:34 > 0:33:38We've prepared a summary of their expenses so the couple can

0:33:38 > 0:33:42compare their finances at home with those in Australia.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44First up is the weekly food shop.

0:33:44 > 0:33:49- OK, let's have a little look. - Potatoes!- Potatoes.- £8.40!

0:33:49 > 0:33:53- £8.40 compared to £3 in the UK. - For 5kg.

0:33:53 > 0:33:56For a 5kg bag, that's really expensive.

0:33:56 > 0:34:00Coffee! £4.84 to £5.71.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03- That would make a huge difference, cos I drink loads of coffee.- You do. You do.- Yeah.

0:34:03 > 0:34:07- Everything does seem to be a lot more dear in Australia.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11- The problem we've got over here is, you'll be at home more.- Huh!

0:34:11 > 0:34:13So you'll be eating more.

0:34:13 > 0:34:21- £49.32 a week.- Worse off.- Worse off. - That's £200 a month more.- Yeah.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24It's almost half, isn't it? It's 50% more.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26And that's just the food bill.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30What about the bigger outgoings such as property rental down under?

0:34:30 > 0:34:33We'll look at the figures for house number three,

0:34:33 > 0:34:37- the house that we all liked.- For rental?- For rental.- Yeah.- Yeah?- OK.

0:34:37 > 0:34:42Back in the UK, the couple pay £200 a month on their mortgage.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46The rental there would £1,167.

0:34:46 > 0:34:50- But, again, that would be on the nicer house.- Yeah.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54That's almost £1,500 more per month to rent in Perth.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57And that's before any other household utilities.

0:34:57 > 0:35:01Is the dream suddenly beyond their grasp?

0:35:01 > 0:35:04Obviously that's a huge jump and it just makes you wonder -

0:35:04 > 0:35:07when you add all the figures up and do the comparison,

0:35:07 > 0:35:11and what's left - if that's going to make a huge difference.

0:35:11 > 0:35:16But with potential earnings of up to £40,000 more in Australia,

0:35:16 > 0:35:19could Kerry be in for a pleasant surprise?

0:35:21 > 0:35:25- So £921.00...- A month? - BOTH:- ..better off in Australia.

0:35:25 > 0:35:29- And that's the most expensive.- And that's with the most expensive house.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33- A shock.- A bit of a result, that, isn't it?- Yeah. That's brilliant.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36And the all-important bottom line?

0:35:36 > 0:35:41- BOTH:- £11,052 a year better off.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46- That's good, that is. - There you go. Brilliant.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49- Oh, Kerry, I could be home every single day of the week.- Yeah.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52And 11 grand a year better off for it as well. I'm well chuffed with that.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55- Yeah, it makes a huge difference. - Absolutely.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57Yeah.

0:35:58 > 0:36:03This could be the easiest decision of the week for the Woodlands.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05Based on our cost of living, we are voting for...

0:36:14 > 0:36:15- BOTH:- Australia!

0:36:17 > 0:36:21And we would be silly not to, because the figures speak for themselves.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24Being home every day as well, which is a bonus. And a nice house.

0:36:26 > 0:36:28THEY CHUCKLE

0:36:35 > 0:36:39Australia could mean more time together for the Woodlands.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41But with John's dream within touching distance,

0:36:41 > 0:36:44the family have yet to face their biggest hurdle.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48As they settle down to watch a DVD of messages from home,

0:36:48 > 0:36:51will the reality of leaving loved ones behind prove too much

0:36:51 > 0:36:53to bear for Chloe and Kerry?

0:36:55 > 0:36:58ALL: Hiya, John. Hiya, Kerry. Hiya, Chloe.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01Hi, Chlo, Kerry and John. Missing you loads.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04My relationship with Kerry is we're best friends,

0:37:04 > 0:37:08we can tell each other anything. We are very supportive.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11The soul of the party, really, John. Yeah.

0:37:11 > 0:37:15- He's not just a cousin, he's also our friend as well.- Yeah.

0:37:15 > 0:37:16And a good friend, a close friend.

0:37:16 > 0:37:21I think, as a couple, they love each other a lot.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23I love having a relationship with Chloe,

0:37:23 > 0:37:25she makes me feel really happy.

0:37:25 > 0:37:29Um, you know, she's really fun to be with. We always have a laugh.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32A bit of a shock, really.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36I suppose you don't really expect your children to up

0:37:36 > 0:37:38and go to the other side of the world.

0:37:38 > 0:37:43But, um, at the same point, I'm happy for her...

0:37:43 > 0:37:45for the three of them.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47Aw, poor Nan.

0:37:48 > 0:37:53If Chloe moved to Australia, I'd miss her loads, um...

0:37:53 > 0:37:55I'd be thinking about her all the time, really.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01- I'd be gutted. I would. JOHN:- That's nice, isn't it?

0:38:01 > 0:38:02I think, over the last few years,

0:38:02 > 0:38:06we've just got a really close bond, and I would miss her.

0:38:08 > 0:38:09Sorry.

0:38:12 > 0:38:17Whatever decision you make, it will be the right one, and we will miss you lots.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20As I keep telling you, this is an opportunity of a lifetime.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22You HAVE to take it.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25Grasp it with both hands and enjoy it.

0:38:25 > 0:38:26Bye.

0:38:28 > 0:38:30I hope you don't want to be without me

0:38:30 > 0:38:33but you've got to do what makes you happy.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36And I love you loads and I'll see you soon.

0:38:37 > 0:38:38Make a decision.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43Either stay or come back to us. Love you lots. Mam.

0:38:47 > 0:38:51You don't realise, do you? You take things for granted when you're at home.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Nan's the one that made me cry.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56It makes you realise, doesn't it,

0:38:56 > 0:38:59everybody that you're going to be leaving behind and, you know, how

0:38:59 > 0:39:03much they are going to miss you, not just how much you're going to miss them.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08Leaving loved ones behind has always been Chloe

0:39:08 > 0:39:12and Kerry's biggest concern about a move down under.

0:39:12 > 0:39:15As their trial week draws to an end, it's now time for some

0:39:15 > 0:39:19serious thinking before the family make their final decision.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23John's had one week to convince Chloe

0:39:23 > 0:39:26to buy into his dream family life in Australia.

0:39:26 > 0:39:30The week started well, with everyone falling for an Aussie property.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32This is what I've had in mind.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34- This would be living the dream, wouldn't it?- It would be.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37- Cry-baby likes this house.- Yes!

0:39:37 > 0:39:40Positive news for Kerry and John on the job front showed just how

0:39:40 > 0:39:42much they could gain down under.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45- Kerry, I could be home every single day of the week.- Yeah.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47And 11 grand a year being better off for it as well.

0:39:47 > 0:39:52Chloe seemed won over by a day sampling Australia's outdoor lifestyle.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54I don't think there's any time of today when none of us

0:39:54 > 0:39:56didn't have a smile on our face.

0:39:56 > 0:40:00But messages from loved ones at home proved hard for everyone to watch.

0:40:00 > 0:40:01It's just a shame that

0:40:01 > 0:40:04if you did move over here, it would just be the three of us.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07It wouldn't be that you'd have your family there or the people

0:40:07 > 0:40:08that you would normally spend days with.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18To leave all you've got to leave back home with

0:40:18 > 0:40:20the normality of life back home, what you're used to, would be

0:40:20 > 0:40:24a big choice and decision for us to make.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26Um, but I believe that we could make it over here.

0:40:27 > 0:40:33Coming to Perth has been quite a good experience for myself

0:40:33 > 0:40:36because I can see outside of my chip shop

0:40:36 > 0:40:40where I work and actually see what else there is in the world

0:40:40 > 0:40:43and what other type of job opportunity I could actually have.

0:40:45 > 0:40:50I feel a little bit more confident that we probably could make a go of it out here.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54However I think if you are sort of, you know, being sort of brave enough

0:40:54 > 0:40:57really to leave everything that you know behind,

0:40:57 > 0:41:01for me, you know, it's still giving me big doubts really of

0:41:01 > 0:41:03whether I'm strong enough to do that as a person.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06But could the new life Australia might offer be worth

0:41:06 > 0:41:11sacrificing everything the family would be leaving behind in Wales?

0:41:11 > 0:41:15I've seen my mum and dad's relationship become a lot more closer.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19They seem to be a lot more, as you would say, loved up.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22It's been lovely having John home every day, or being with us

0:41:22 > 0:41:25every day, and just doing things together as a family.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28If we decide to stay or go, I think the biggest thing is that

0:41:28 > 0:41:31I'd like to spend more time with my wife and my daughter.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34I do dream of walking with my wife,

0:41:34 > 0:41:38whether it be on the beach or just in the park,

0:41:38 > 0:41:42just spending time and doing just normal things with Kerry.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45This week has been John's last chance to have the family life

0:41:45 > 0:41:48he's been dreaming of for years.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51So when it comes to the crucial vote, what will it be?

0:41:52 > 0:41:54After an amazing week in Australia,

0:41:54 > 0:41:57the country that we choose to live in is...

0:42:05 > 0:42:07- Undecided.- Australia.- Australia.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09- I knew you'd choose that.- Did you?

0:42:09 > 0:42:12I just feel I need a little bit more time to

0:42:12 > 0:42:16sort of get my own thoughts together and have a good think about it.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18No, I understand that, Kerry.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20I mean, is it the thought of leaving family

0:42:20 > 0:42:23and friends behind which has swayed you to be undecided?

0:42:23 > 0:42:25I think that's one of the main reasons.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27And I also think it's fear of, you know,

0:42:27 > 0:42:30- you're leaving everything that you are familiar with back home.- OK. - Yeah.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33How about you, Chloe? Why have you chosen Australia?

0:42:33 > 0:42:36Because I just think this could be a better lifestyle altogether.

0:42:36 > 0:42:39I thought you'd be the one to be undecided, not your mum.
