0:00:05 > 0:00:08How far would you go to start a new life
0:00:08 > 0:00:10on the other side of the world?
0:00:10 > 0:00:14Especially if your other half doesn't share your dream.
0:00:14 > 0:00:19Like most of us, Debbie Wynn is sick of British winters.
0:00:19 > 0:00:23It's cold, it's windy, it's wet, it's dark, it's dull.
0:00:23 > 0:00:26Saying she's determined to move to Australia is an understatement.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28I've been a bit obsessive.
0:00:28 > 0:00:30There's no way round it, really.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33But with husband, Carl, happy at home...
0:00:33 > 0:00:37The heart tells me this is the place to be and we're OK.
0:00:37 > 0:00:40And finance is refusing to add up.
0:00:40 > 0:00:45We'd be £2,764 per year worse off.
0:00:45 > 0:00:49Can we afford to buy this house? Oh...
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Will Debbie's dream be dealt a knockout blow?
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Although Australia is the smallest, flattest continent in the world,
0:01:23 > 0:01:27it has more than 31,000 miles of coastline,
0:01:27 > 0:01:31so it's not surprising around 80% of the Australians live within 40 miles
0:01:31 > 0:01:35of the beach, or to see why it's such a magnet for British families.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40Ahead of Debbie Wynn is just one week to convince husband,
0:01:40 > 0:01:43Carl, to give up everything he loves at home
0:01:43 > 0:01:45for a brand-new life in Australia.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49After that, the family will have to make a massive decision,
0:01:49 > 0:01:52one that could change their lives forever,
0:01:52 > 0:01:56whether to stay in the UK, or to start again down under.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01With a stop-over in Singapore, the Wynns' journey to Australia
0:02:01 > 0:02:05begins with an arduous 22 hours in the air.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15Everything went smoothly, all the transfers were great.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18The on-board entertainment was good, Ella was a little star.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21She was fantastic, we were expecting her to be quite difficult,
0:02:21 > 0:02:23tiring, hard work, it was brilliant.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25It really was, a really good flight and we're here.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27- That's not to say we're not tired. - Yeah.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31Debbie's delighted to be on Australian soil,
0:02:31 > 0:02:32but what about Carl?
0:02:32 > 0:02:35I'm quite excited to see what's out here, to be honest.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38It's going to be really interesting to see what life has to offer.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42- What about you, Ella, where do you want to live?- In Australia.
0:02:44 > 0:02:45Ella's already on board
0:02:45 > 0:02:48but now Debbie needs to get Carl to feel the same way.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55In the UK, Carl and Debbie Wynn live with Debbie's teenage son, Jacob,
0:02:55 > 0:02:57and the couple's three-year-old daughter, Ella,
0:02:57 > 0:03:00in Wrexham, North Wales.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02The couple both work in education
0:03:02 > 0:03:05and the family enjoy a good standard of living.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09But, for Debbie, life in the UK has one major drawback.
0:03:09 > 0:03:14What we've got here is gorgeous, it's beautiful, but we can only
0:03:14 > 0:03:16enjoy it for about... I can only enjoy it
0:03:16 > 0:03:18for about eight weeks a year.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21Any time other than that it's cold, it's windy, it's wet,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24it's dark, it's dull.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27And she's had enough of dressing up to keep British winters at bay.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31November, December, January, February, I'm wearing three coats.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34- Yeah.- From the minute I wake up in the morning, if I'm at home,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36until I go to bed at night.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39I think if she could hibernate, she probably would.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44Debbie realised Australia could potentially offer her and her family
0:03:44 > 0:03:47a brighter future after spending three weeks
0:03:47 > 0:03:49bedridden with an illness.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53The dream for me is the lifestyle that Australia has to offer.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56To start the day in the garden with the blue sunshine,
0:03:56 > 0:04:00fills your soul with joy before you've even started.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03How can you not then pass that on through your day.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06For Ella, for her to have her life in the sunshine,
0:04:06 > 0:04:10having the beach on the doorstep
0:04:10 > 0:04:12and being able to get out and about more.
0:04:12 > 0:04:17Before long, Debbie was working furiously to turn her dream into a reality.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20The first thing she did when she got well was start
0:04:20 > 0:04:24sending e-mails to people about the possibility of living there.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28It really has been a... Pretty much full-time second job for her.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31And for the last 18 months the talk in the household has been
0:04:31 > 0:04:35- of nothing else. - I've been a bit obsessive.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38There's no way around it, really. I know I've been obsessive.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42There's a constant barrage of information about Australia, why it would be better.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45The more I've looked into it, the more and more I wanted it.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47I think that this really is a good move for us.
0:04:47 > 0:04:51Unfortunately, Debbie's dream faces one huge hurdle,
0:04:51 > 0:04:52Carl doesn't share it.
0:04:52 > 0:04:56For him, leaving the UK would be a massive wrench.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59It would mean not only giving up the job he loves,
0:04:59 > 0:05:01but a packed life outside work, too.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05I really enjoy playing drums. I play with a band, two bands.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08I also love doing shows for children.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11I do a mixture of magic and Punch and Judy.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15The heart tells me this is the place to be and we're OK.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17We're fine as we are.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21But for every argument Carl has for staying at home,
0:05:21 > 0:05:23Debbie has one for moving down under.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26There is always a benefit, isn't there?
0:05:26 > 0:05:29It can always be turned into a positive towards Australia.
0:05:29 > 0:05:32Oh, it can, everything can be turned into a positive towards Australia.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34- Lots of thought processes. - I'm very persuasive.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38It would be so much easier if you just said, "Yes" and just did it.
0:05:38 > 0:05:41It would be a lot less painful for everybody.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44But Debbie's obsession is beginning to impact on the family.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48It's wearing, 18 months of Australia, Australia, Australia.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50It is very, very wearing.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52It's wearing to be doing it as much as to be listening.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54It's not a comfortable...
0:05:54 > 0:05:57For either of us, I know, it's been a difficult 18 months.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02Because I know, I know in my heart I just have to keep going.
0:06:02 > 0:06:05Debbie's son, Jacob, is up for the move,
0:06:05 > 0:06:10but he's also feeling the tension the issue is now causing in the Wynn household.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13My stepfather is looking at the other points about it.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Like, not being able to... not survive over there,
0:06:16 > 0:06:20but get jobs and meet the family's needs and things like that.
0:06:20 > 0:06:25Yeah, it's been quite hard, where to step and things in the house.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28The week ahead is Debbie's best shot at persuading Carl
0:06:28 > 0:06:31to share her dream, once and for all.
0:06:31 > 0:06:36I want Carl to enjoy it and long for it, and want it, as much as I do.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40I want there to be something out there for him, as much as for me.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44I haven't got the same passion, I don't share the same ideas.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48She deserves the chance to persuade me.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57Debbie has just one week to convince Carl that making a new life
0:06:57 > 0:07:01in Australia is a journey the whole family should be making.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04For their first ever trip down under, the Wynns are visiting
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Australia's third largest city,
0:07:06 > 0:07:09Brisbane, in the state of Queensland.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15Home for the week is a four bedroomed property in Cleveland,
0:07:15 > 0:07:19a vibrant coastal village, 15 miles south-east of the city's centre.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23For Debbie, it's a first taste of Aussie-style living
0:07:23 > 0:07:25and she likes what she sees.
0:07:25 > 0:07:27Wow! Look!
0:07:27 > 0:07:29That's our pool.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32We're going to stay there for a whole week.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36Oh, look.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39It's absolutely gorgeous.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42And the enthusiasm continues inside.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47I wasn't expecting it to be this size, either.
0:07:47 > 0:07:50- It's definitely open-plan living thing, isn't it?- It is.
0:07:50 > 0:07:54- Really family...- The outdoors is an extension of the indoors.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57Even Carl's given a stamp of approval.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00The house has been a great start to the week
0:08:00 > 0:08:04and Debbie hopes the next few days will make just as big a splash.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07I'm really excited about this week.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10I'm really excited to see what we can...if we can do it.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12If...if...
0:08:12 > 0:08:15As two teachers, as a family of four,
0:08:15 > 0:08:18with what we've got, the age we are, if it's possible.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21But Carl's staying practical.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23It's very easy to walk into a place like this and think,
0:08:23 > 0:08:27"Yeah, I'd love to live here" and I am sure that's exactly what Debbie would do.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Um, but the reality has got to be there, as well.
0:08:34 > 0:08:38Back in the UK, home for the Wynns is a four-bedroomed detached house
0:08:38 > 0:08:40in Wrexham, North Wales.
0:08:40 > 0:08:42When it comes to property down under,
0:08:42 > 0:08:46Debbie's in two minds as to what she's looking for.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49I want to really downsize
0:08:49 > 0:08:52and spend as little as possible on the basics,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56so we've each got a room and we have got the private garden
0:08:56 > 0:08:59and we are within ten minutes to a beach.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02Then partly I'm also drawn to actually maybe to get what
0:09:02 > 0:09:05we would really like, the dream house, the big four-bedroomed,
0:09:05 > 0:09:07so there's room for everybody.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10We can see a little bit of the sea from one of the windows
0:09:10 > 0:09:13but there's a separate outdoor annexe for parents and families
0:09:13 > 0:09:17to be able to come and stay, completely independently, all those things.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20If it's within reach, I imagine I'll want that when I get there.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23For Carl, any Australian home will need to have a space
0:09:23 > 0:09:25he can call his own.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28My one stipulation would be I need a man cave.
0:09:28 > 0:09:33At the end of the day, what's in the house is always Debbie's house/home.
0:09:33 > 0:09:37Um, things that don't live in the house/home live in a man cave.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43The Wynns would have between £275,000 and £300,000
0:09:43 > 0:09:46to spend on a home down under.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50Today we're going to give them an idea of what that might buy.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53We'll show them three properties based on what we know they need,
0:09:53 > 0:09:56what they think they want
0:09:56 > 0:09:58and what they can actually afford.
0:09:58 > 0:10:02First port of call is Ormiston in the Redlands district.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Clear sea views and tree-lined streets
0:10:04 > 0:10:08mean this quiet suburb offers the bay-side living Debbie desires.
0:10:09 > 0:10:11But will this three-bedroomed house be some place
0:10:11 > 0:10:13Carl can imagine calling home?
0:10:13 > 0:10:16It's a nice little street, isn't it? Really quiet.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18Big space, isn't it?
0:10:18 > 0:10:22Yeah, nice.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24Seems dark.
0:10:24 > 0:10:30But probably because the blinds, they need the dark for the cool, possibly.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32Debbie's looking on the bright side.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35Wowee! A big space!
0:10:35 > 0:10:38A really big space. I wasn't expecting to see this
0:10:38 > 0:10:44- big dining room space.- The counter. - Bright, it's fresh.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46Yeah, nice-sized kitchen.
0:10:46 > 0:10:50It needs a bit of care and attention but the space is here, isn't?
0:10:50 > 0:10:54Yeah, not a lot really, it's only basic cosmetic.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58This is a good size too. Cos it looks so small from the front, compact.
0:10:58 > 0:11:02- It does, doesn't it?- Nice big bed. - Reasonable size.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06Huge storage space and nice and bright.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08As well as three bedrooms,
0:11:08 > 0:11:12a converted garage could be perfect for Carl.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16Wow, a drum room for Daddy, Ella.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18- What do you think?- Wow, big!
0:11:18 > 0:11:23It's a space, it's got more light than the garage at home.
0:11:23 > 0:11:28It has, probably not as soundproof. This could be a fabulous space.
0:11:28 > 0:11:33- The possible, um, dwelling place of the man.- Your man cave?
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Could be a man cave. It's a very posh man cave, yeah.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40Carl can see the potential,
0:11:40 > 0:11:42and outside is something which should make Debbie smile.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47It's a huge garden with a big space.
0:11:47 > 0:11:53And an enormous, gorgeous pool. Look!
0:11:53 > 0:11:57This is the house seller. The garden and the pool.
0:11:57 > 0:11:59It's huge. It's huge.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01We could have street parties in there.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04- It's absolutely gorgeous. - It's lovely.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10This house could be a perfect fit for the Wynns,
0:12:10 > 0:12:14but if it's not within their £275,000 to £300,000 budget,
0:12:14 > 0:12:18it could also be a wake-up call for Debbie.
0:12:21 > 0:12:25Can we afford to buy this house?
0:12:25 > 0:12:27SHE GASPS
0:12:27 > 0:12:32No! Not really. Just, just... it would be a push.
0:12:32 > 0:12:37It would be a push and it's a case of is it worth the push?
0:12:37 > 0:12:40This house had what Debbie and Carl wanted,
0:12:40 > 0:12:42but around £10,000 over budget,
0:12:42 > 0:12:45it looks like it could be a slight stretch for the Wynns.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Debbie's dream home could be beyond her reach.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55Staying in the Ormiston area,
0:12:55 > 0:12:57property number two is a modern bungalow
0:12:57 > 0:13:01and with four bedrooms, three living areas and a double garage,
0:13:01 > 0:13:04it should offer all the space the Wynns could want.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07It's got a lovely frontage, this house.
0:13:07 > 0:13:12- Oh, office there. - Office, is that?- Yeah.- Nice.
0:13:12 > 0:13:20- Master bedroom as well. En suite. - Oh, wow.- This is definitely my room.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23This is how you imagine the layout to be, don't you?
0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Come in the front door. - I want to be in that one.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30- A big shower. - A big shower room. Big bed.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33Cupboard space, presumably that's the toilet area and cupboard?
0:13:33 > 0:13:37Walk-in wardrobe, wow! Look.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39Definitely a Mummy room then.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42There's a lot to like so far.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44But a typical feature of Aussie homes,
0:13:44 > 0:13:46wide eaves to protect the house from the sun,
0:13:46 > 0:13:48isn't going down well with Carl.
0:13:48 > 0:13:52It is dark. It's one of the major factors of our house you keep moaning about,
0:13:52 > 0:13:54is the fact it's so dark there.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57I can see every lamp in the house being on constantly.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00This isn't light, bright or airy,
0:14:00 > 0:14:04but it's very pretty from the outside, it's in a very nice area.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Reserved, it's quiet. - It's a big enough space.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10It's got merits, it has.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Despite some redeeming features,
0:14:13 > 0:14:16it doesn't sound like this house is winning anyone over.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19It's an all-right sized bedroom.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22This one seems a bit bigger than the other one.
0:14:22 > 0:14:24My heart wouldn't be in the move from the UK, I wouldn't move
0:14:24 > 0:14:28over for it with excitement in my heart and soul.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30- No, I'm disappointed with the indoors.- Yeah, and me.
0:14:30 > 0:14:33The outdoor look of the house, the area, the whole package,
0:14:33 > 0:14:35you'd expect something different.
0:14:35 > 0:14:38You'd expect the wow factor inside and it just hasn't got it.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40It's got all the space they need,
0:14:40 > 0:14:43but the dingy interior is a disappointment.
0:14:43 > 0:14:49Will it be within reach of their £275,000-£300,000 budget?
0:14:49 > 0:14:51Go on then, Ella. Let's see.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53SHE GASPS
0:14:54 > 0:14:58- Very expensive.- I thought it would be more expensive than that.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01I actually thought it would be more than that as well,
0:15:01 > 0:15:03because it's just such a lovely area, location.
0:15:03 > 0:15:07And it's got a lot of space, it has got a lot of space, it's a big house.
0:15:07 > 0:15:12- Just not the sort of space I think we want. - No, it just doesn't do it for us.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15It's got room to roam and a perfect location,
0:15:15 > 0:15:18but with an overhanging roof and an over-budget price,
0:15:18 > 0:15:21this isn't the house for the Wynns either.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24Properties so far aren't helping Debbie sell Carl
0:15:24 > 0:15:27her vision of a better life in Australia.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Two down, one to go, but will it be enough to convince Carl
0:15:30 > 0:15:33to move to the other side of the world?
0:15:37 > 0:15:41The family's final stop is just 30 minutes from Brisbane city centre
0:15:41 > 0:15:44in the sought-after area of Alexandra Hills.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46This five-bedroomed house promises
0:15:46 > 0:15:50spacious and modern interiors for buyers on a budget.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Will it be enough to excite both Debbie and Carl?
0:15:53 > 0:16:00Oh, this is a big room, isn't it? Wow! Look, a bouncy castle too.
0:16:00 > 0:16:05- Big, open space. Nice family space. - Straight into it as well.- Yeah.
0:16:05 > 0:16:09- Good-sized kitchen.- What do you think, Ella-Boo?- It's gorgeous.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11You like it, it's gorgeous.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13Ella is impressed.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16- Do you think this is a master bedroom?- I don't know.
0:16:16 > 0:16:19- Having a double bed?- I don't know, it's small.- It's really small.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21The room is small for the bad.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25It would be OK for your room, it fits a double or a single bed.
0:16:25 > 0:16:30The bedrooms might not be quite big enough, but what about the rest of the house?
0:16:30 > 0:16:33Wow, I wasn't expecting this entire part of the house.
0:16:33 > 0:16:38Another lovely second family space, movie room, snug, second living room.
0:16:38 > 0:16:43- The outside as well. - So, en suite, double-use en suite. - This one is bigger.
0:16:43 > 0:16:49- Yeah, big, bright, light.- Storage. - That's a nice master bedroom.
0:16:49 > 0:16:55Yeah, and you got the light coming through the windows there. Air con.
0:16:55 > 0:17:01And you're private again. This is a fabulous space.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04And there's more of that word yet again outside.
0:17:05 > 0:17:09- This is a fantastic space, this is huge.- It is, isn't it?
0:17:09 > 0:17:12- Big space for a pool.- Nice garden.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14While it doesn't have a pool, outside does offer
0:17:14 > 0:17:18something for Carl, and Debbie is quick to spot potential.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22This, Carl is fantastic. It's a must, it could become a complete studio.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26For drums or just a whole cave for you, really.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29It's not a big loss if we don't have a pool, of course it's on the
0:17:29 > 0:17:34wish list, but also on the wish list is not killing ourselves financially.
0:17:34 > 0:17:38So it's getting that balance really between being able to live and enjoy life.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41And we are so close to the bays here.
0:17:41 > 0:17:43Debbie is prepared to sacrifice a pool
0:17:43 > 0:17:47if it means this house is within reach. But is it?
0:17:47 > 0:17:51What do you think price-wise? It's got to be top end, if not way above.
0:17:51 > 0:17:55- Way above.- Way above.- But again it would support everything, family coming to visit...
0:17:55 > 0:17:59- It would, yes. - ..and a growing family home.
0:17:59 > 0:18:03- More than enough space, what do you think?- I think it's way over.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08Are we ready?
0:18:10 > 0:18:14Really?! Under, way under. That's amazing.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16That's amazing, I didn't expect that.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19I'm really surprised, that's brilliant.
0:18:19 > 0:18:23That's a really nice thing, to know we can get something on this scale.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26- Property's there if you're looking for it, isn't it?- Yes.
0:18:26 > 0:18:30It's been a day of ups and downs. Property one had
0:18:30 > 0:18:32room for a Carl cave and a pool,
0:18:32 > 0:18:34but was out of reach financially.
0:18:34 > 0:18:38House number two had lots of space but dingy decor.
0:18:38 > 0:18:41But the last property turned things around -
0:18:41 > 0:18:45big, bright and in a good area, it went down well with the whole family
0:18:45 > 0:18:47and was within reach, financially.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51It's time to vote on Australian properties.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54Will Debbie's dream be one step closer
0:18:54 > 0:18:57or will Carl believe home is where the heart is?
0:18:57 > 0:19:00Based on the properties we've seen today, our vote goes to...
0:19:10 > 0:19:12ALL: Australia.
0:19:14 > 0:19:19Wow. Wow! Australia! You want to live in Australia, Ella?
0:19:19 > 0:19:22- And you do? - My vote's a surprise to me, as well.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24Because I'm surprised we could afford anything
0:19:24 > 0:19:28remotely like what we've got. I'm not looking like for like, either,
0:19:28 > 0:19:31I was looking more for what it would offer us
0:19:31 > 0:19:36in terms of property in this country, linked to lifestyle, Ella.
0:19:36 > 0:19:41- So, yeah, I'm quite surprised myself.- This is a fantastic start.
0:19:41 > 0:19:47I genuinely didn't think that we'd get the Oz card so soon.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50So that's a fabulous start for the week,
0:19:50 > 0:19:52and it's really good place to go from.
0:19:56 > 0:20:01An early vote for Oz from Carl has given Debbie a glimmer of hope.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04But she knows that for him to give her dream serious consideration,
0:20:04 > 0:20:07it will take much more than a nice house.
0:20:07 > 0:20:13Back in the UK, Carl earns around £40,000 as a teacher and adviser,
0:20:13 > 0:20:15specialising in primary education.
0:20:15 > 0:20:18It's a job he'll find hard to leave behind.
0:20:18 > 0:20:22I love my job, I get to work with lots and lots of interesting people,
0:20:22 > 0:20:24a huge variety all the time.
0:20:24 > 0:20:28I can't really see how I'd get anything similar.
0:20:28 > 0:20:32I must admit, I don't know what's available in Australia yet.
0:20:32 > 0:20:36Debbie's a part-time primary teacher earning around £20,000,
0:20:36 > 0:20:39and she'd be keen to do the same in Australia.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41It's definitely the vocation.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44I joke about, "I'm happy to work anywhere, as long as it's sunny,"
0:20:44 > 0:20:47but, really, I'm not at all.
0:20:47 > 0:20:51If Debbie is to realise her dream of spending her future in the sunshine,
0:20:51 > 0:20:54getting the right job for her and Carl in Oz will be crucial.
0:20:56 > 0:20:58To get an idea of their work prospects,
0:20:58 > 0:21:01they're visiting Sheldon College, a private school
0:21:01 > 0:21:05catering for children from 18 months to 17 years old
0:21:05 > 0:21:07in the town of Capalaba.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10- Hi, Carl, I'm Michelle.- Welcome to Australia and welcome to Sheldon.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12Thank you very much. Thank you for having us.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15Carl meets college principal Dr Lyn Bishop,
0:21:15 > 0:21:18and is keen to hear about the school's philosophy.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21In this school, it's always about how what we do with children
0:21:21 > 0:21:24has an immediate transference into the real world.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27So, it's not just learning out of a textbook any more,
0:21:27 > 0:21:29it's about how can I take the concept out of a textbook
0:21:29 > 0:21:32and apply that in a real-world setting.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34It just makes education far more relevant,
0:21:34 > 0:21:37- meaningful and wonderful for children.- Yeah, real life.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39It's time to go again.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41Carl likes what he's hearing.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43Debbie's getting a tour from Michelle,
0:21:43 > 0:21:45the school's Director Of Early Learning,
0:21:45 > 0:21:47and it turns out Aussie-style education
0:21:47 > 0:21:50could offer her a fringe benefit.
0:21:50 > 0:21:52There's indoor/outdoor space time,
0:21:52 > 0:21:54so basically what happens in the initial part of the day,
0:21:54 > 0:21:56we work predominantly towards the climate,
0:21:56 > 0:22:00so if it's the summer months, we come outside for a start.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03Teaching in the sun isn't something Debbie gets much of at home,
0:22:03 > 0:22:06and she's impressed by the school's teaching style.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08I could see myself teaching here.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11Quite simply, it's got so many elements, so much scope.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14I think I could find a place here.
0:22:14 > 0:22:18Carl's always felt moving to Australia would be too big a gamble.
0:22:18 > 0:22:22Would an Australian teacher's salary help lessen the risk?
0:22:22 > 0:22:24How much would a teacher in Australia
0:22:24 > 0:22:26be realistically expecting to earn?
0:22:26 > 0:22:28It would depend what year level you are.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30If you're coming out as a beginning teacher,
0:22:30 > 0:22:33you'd be on around 53,000-54,000 a year.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35When you get to the top of your pay scale,
0:22:35 > 0:22:37you'd be looking at about 86,000-87,000.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40But then you have the opportunity to go into promotional bands,
0:22:40 > 0:22:44and the promotional bands will take you up in the 90s, 100,000 plus.
0:22:44 > 0:22:46In spite of his experience,
0:22:46 > 0:22:50Carl worries at what level he'd be able to enter Australian teaching.
0:22:50 > 0:22:55As a teacher, coming in relatively high on a scale at the moment,
0:22:55 > 0:22:57how long would it take me to slot into something?
0:22:57 > 0:22:59Would I start at the bottom?
0:22:59 > 0:23:01No, you'd be able to show experience that you've had elsewhere,
0:23:01 > 0:23:03and you'd be credited with that
0:23:03 > 0:23:05and then you'd be put on a level and a band.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07And then your salary would be commensurate
0:23:07 > 0:23:09with where you are in terms of your experience.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11It's far from clear-cut for Carl.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14He'd have to be able to prove his teaching experience
0:23:14 > 0:23:16to get a salary he'd be happy with.
0:23:16 > 0:23:20And, even then, there could be another hurdle to overcome.
0:23:20 > 0:23:21What's demand for jobs like?
0:23:21 > 0:23:23We seem to have a lot of people who've been trained
0:23:23 > 0:23:26that aren't necessarily employed at this stage.
0:23:26 > 0:23:29And it's really a buyer's market, you might say.
0:23:29 > 0:23:32It sounds like securing a job may not be easy.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34Debbie wants to understand more
0:23:34 > 0:23:37about how her qualifications would transfer.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39I actually did a three-year BA teaching degree,
0:23:39 > 0:23:41which I understand isn't enough
0:23:41 > 0:23:44for me to actually be qualified straightaway to teach here.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47Do you know what I'd have to do in order to top up that qualification?
0:23:47 > 0:23:50Your first step would be to apply
0:23:50 > 0:23:53for a recognition of your qualification.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56Sometimes, depending on the sector that you would like to work in,
0:23:56 > 0:23:58they will actually take that degree.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00But, for example, in the early years in the childcare setting
0:24:00 > 0:24:02or in the kindergarten years,
0:24:02 > 0:24:04you can actually look at that as a starting point.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07Then you would have to retrain to be able to teach
0:24:07 > 0:24:09above the preparatory years.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12Extra training could mean a delay before Debbie started work.
0:24:12 > 0:24:16While Aussie-style education has appealed to both Debbie and Carl,
0:24:16 > 0:24:19getting a job may not be straightforward for either of them.
0:24:19 > 0:24:23So when it comes to work, is Debbie's dream still on track?
0:24:24 > 0:24:28Based on the information that we've received today, our vote goes to...
0:24:38 > 0:24:40- UK.- I'm not sure!
0:24:42 > 0:24:43Why aren't you sure?
0:24:43 > 0:24:45What we saw, the place we've been, has just been fantastic,
0:24:45 > 0:24:48an awful lot of opportunities.
0:24:48 > 0:24:50But the process of us getting there, especially with me
0:24:50 > 0:24:53having a three-year degree, is going to be a very difficult road.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56I'd also have to fight for my salary,
0:24:56 > 0:24:59if you know what I mean, for my level of pay.
0:24:59 > 0:25:01I'd have to go through a process of justifying where I am
0:25:01 > 0:25:06on the pay scale, experience, etc, otherwise I'll start at the start.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08- So, as a family, that would be a big financial hit.- A big hit.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11This isn't the end of the dream for us,
0:25:11 > 0:25:14because there are ways round everything, there will be a solution,
0:25:14 > 0:25:17there will be a pathway, we just need to keep going forward
0:25:17 > 0:25:20and to keep looking and keep searching,
0:25:20 > 0:25:23because the rest of the dream for me is still a dream.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30It looks like Debbie's dream of a new life in Australia
0:25:30 > 0:25:32could be in real trouble.
0:25:32 > 0:25:34But she's not giving up that easily.
0:25:34 > 0:25:37She's hoping a taste of the Aussie lifestyle
0:25:37 > 0:25:40will be enough to get her husband back onside.
0:25:44 > 0:25:47Today, the family are heading to Redcliffe to experience
0:25:47 > 0:25:49the annual seaside carnival.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52With sand, sea and sunshine, it's everything Debbie wants.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55But will their day out be enough to persuade Carl
0:25:55 > 0:25:58Australia is where the family should be?
0:25:59 > 0:26:03It turns out, there's a big surprise in store for him.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07I know Mr Punch has made it to Australia as I've Googled him.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09I wasn't expecting to see a...
0:26:09 > 0:26:12Timing's good.
0:26:12 > 0:26:16# If you're happy and you know it Clap your hands. #
0:26:16 > 0:26:18It might be child's play, but a packed audience
0:26:18 > 0:26:22has Carl entertaining some serious possibilities.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25When the curtain comes down on the show, he takes the opportunity
0:26:25 > 0:26:29to quiz puppeteer Julia Baker, herself an expat.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32There is definitely a big market here for children's entertainment
0:26:32 > 0:26:35and people will pay. Birthday parties are huge.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37- Are they?- Really? - Yes, and they pay good.
0:26:37 > 0:26:39Is it enough to sustain as a full-time profession?
0:26:39 > 0:26:42Full-time?
0:26:42 > 0:26:46If you market yourself... It would all be weekend work.
0:26:46 > 0:26:49Punch and Judy... I mean, another big market is childcare centres.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52I mean, the money's good, but you will have to market yourself.
0:26:52 > 0:26:55Nobody's just going to come knocking on your door.
0:26:55 > 0:26:56I really enjoyed it.
0:26:56 > 0:27:00Even as an 18-year-old who's seen the show loads of times before,
0:27:00 > 0:27:04with Carl doing it. Still, the fact that they changed it.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07If we were to come over, it would definitely be something
0:27:07 > 0:27:11I would like to explore anyway, so it's put a sunny side on the...
0:27:13 > 0:27:15..the question.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17Things could be on the up for Debbie.
0:27:19 > 0:27:22A short stroll to the beach is chance for her to reflect
0:27:22 > 0:27:24on the week so far.
0:27:24 > 0:27:27It's been quite an emotional rollercoaster, to be honest, this week.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30One minute, I'm thinking "Yes, we can do this, it is possible,
0:27:30 > 0:27:34"the dream is a reality, we can make this work."
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Then, the next, I'm thinking, "Do you know what? Am I in fantasy land?
0:27:37 > 0:27:39"Are we really, really going to be able to make this work?"
0:27:39 > 0:27:43Despite her fears, Debbie's still determined a life down under
0:27:43 > 0:27:45is worth fighting for.
0:27:45 > 0:27:48Australia itself is beyond paradise, it is the dream,
0:27:48 > 0:27:50it's beyond my dream.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53So, every obstacle we encounter, we'll find a solution.
0:27:53 > 0:27:57In my mind, in my world, we'll find a way round it.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59While Jacob's enjoyed the day out...
0:27:59 > 0:28:03I'm really happy today, I enjoyed the lifestyle
0:28:03 > 0:28:06just how we can come out here and enjoy the beach and the sea.
0:28:06 > 0:28:10..Debbie knows it's not him she needs to convince.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13To be honest, I'm still worried with Carl.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16I still don't know which way he's going to take it,
0:28:16 > 0:28:18I really don't know which way he's going to go.
0:28:18 > 0:28:21Because he is happy at home, we're all happy at home,
0:28:21 > 0:28:27but...this is bigger than that, it's about the future.
0:28:27 > 0:28:30Sampling the Aussie lifestyle has given Carl an appreciation
0:28:30 > 0:28:33of what the country could offer the family.
0:28:33 > 0:28:35I can't argue with what's on offer, it's all here.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38There's enough stuff to keep everybody happy.
0:28:38 > 0:28:42Yeah, it's a great environment for everyone. Yeah, definitely.
0:28:42 > 0:28:43Everyone's having a great time.
0:28:43 > 0:28:47But the practical issues behind a move are still weighing on his mind.
0:28:47 > 0:28:50I really don't like the idea of just jumping into something
0:28:50 > 0:28:53to make everybody happy, and then finding out
0:28:53 > 0:28:56that the struggle's going to be long-term or an uphill struggle,
0:28:56 > 0:28:58it's going to take a long time.
0:28:58 > 0:29:01It's the heart that needs changing, really, at the end of the day.
0:29:03 > 0:29:04So, when it comes to the vote,
0:29:04 > 0:29:08will Carl have been persuaded by the lifestyle Australia can offer?
0:29:08 > 0:29:11Based on our day at the beach today, our vote goes to...
0:29:20 > 0:29:23- JACOB AND DEBBIE: Australia! - Australia.
0:29:25 > 0:29:27All of us? One, two, three, four!
0:29:27 > 0:29:30Come on then, Carl, what convinced you?
0:29:30 > 0:29:31Based on today?
0:29:31 > 0:29:33It's the lifestyle, opportunity,
0:29:33 > 0:29:36you three are obviously really, really happy with it.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39- I can see the possibilities. - For Ella?
0:29:39 > 0:29:42- For everybody. - The vote for me today was easy-peasy.
0:29:42 > 0:29:44This is what it's all about.
0:29:44 > 0:29:46This is what the last 18 months of research has been about,
0:29:46 > 0:29:49the last 18 months of arguments has been about.
0:29:49 > 0:29:51This is what I'm fighting for -
0:29:51 > 0:29:53for myself, for my family, for my grandchildren.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01With Carl's second vote for Australia,
0:30:01 > 0:30:03Debbie's dream lives another day.
0:30:03 > 0:30:07But he's always been concerned a move is just too big a gamble.
0:30:07 > 0:30:11So getting the finances to add up will be key.
0:30:11 > 0:30:16The Wynns believe their house back in the UK is worth around £220,000.
0:30:16 > 0:30:19But would two local estate agents agree?
0:30:21 > 0:30:24OK, nice and bright, open-plan.
0:30:24 > 0:30:28Stairs in the lounge is a little bit of a negative -
0:30:28 > 0:30:32families, it's 50-50 whether they would like that or not.
0:30:32 > 0:30:36OK, sitting room. Excellent use of the extension. Really nice room.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38That looks quite nice, doesn't it?
0:30:42 > 0:30:46Once again, nice, spacious room.
0:30:46 > 0:30:47Good family space.
0:30:47 > 0:30:50- Quite dark, though. - It does look dark.
0:30:50 > 0:30:54Kitchen. A little bit dated, but still quite practical.
0:30:54 > 0:30:56- Really nice garden. - Thank goodness for that!
0:30:56 > 0:30:59Quite private. Excellent.
0:30:59 > 0:31:03White bathroom suite, little tired around the edges,
0:31:03 > 0:31:04this'll probably need replacing.
0:31:04 > 0:31:06Master bedroom, spacious and bright.
0:31:06 > 0:31:09Not overlooked from the front. Nice room.
0:31:09 > 0:31:12Overall, this is a good-sized family home.
0:31:12 > 0:31:15With a little bit more expenditure, it could be even better.
0:31:15 > 0:31:17In the current market,
0:31:17 > 0:31:19I would value this house at £190,000.
0:31:19 > 0:31:22And for a quick sale, I would say £175,000.
0:31:22 > 0:31:24That's low.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27My current valuation of this property is £195,000.
0:31:27 > 0:31:29For a quick sale, £180,000.
0:31:29 > 0:31:31That was low.
0:31:31 > 0:31:34So...where would that leave us?
0:31:36 > 0:31:39Well, that coupled with potential lack of earnings.
0:31:41 > 0:31:44- Yeah, it's a big factor. - There's even less there.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47You're relying on collateral for the house.
0:31:47 > 0:31:50Their house has been valued at £30,000 less
0:31:50 > 0:31:52than the couple were expecting.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55It's all Debbie's wanted for the last 18 months,
0:31:55 > 0:31:59but whether she could afford the move is now in serious doubt.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01To help them see if the figures could work,
0:32:01 > 0:32:04we've put together a comparison of living costs
0:32:04 > 0:32:06in the UK and Australia.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09First up is the family's weekly food shop.
0:32:09 > 0:32:14- Butter. Right, we know is 1.62. Minus...- Minus 1.67.
0:32:14 > 0:32:18- Move your finger down a bit. - Sorry. Milk.
0:32:18 > 0:32:21Not that much expensive, is it? It's still expensive, but...
0:32:21 > 0:32:24- It's still more expensive. - So, nought...
0:32:24 > 0:32:26It's a good job we're not big eaters.
0:32:26 > 0:32:28- Couldn't afford to eat!- No!
0:32:28 > 0:32:34- Free-range eggs.- 3.06. - 3.06 minus 1.68.
0:32:37 > 0:32:391.38. Oh, it's double!
0:32:39 > 0:32:41Despite their small appetites,
0:32:41 > 0:32:46the family's weekly food shop is still £63 more expensive down under.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48That's difficult, isn't it? With the...
0:32:50 > 0:32:52..not knowing how much is going to come in, anyway.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54You can't not eat, can you?
0:32:54 > 0:32:57£63.11 a week, it doesn't sound that bad,
0:32:57 > 0:32:59but when you look at it monthly,
0:32:59 > 0:33:02you get paid monthly, it all adds up, doesn't it?
0:33:02 > 0:33:04Yeah. Over a year.
0:33:04 > 0:33:06With less equity from their house in the UK,
0:33:06 > 0:33:10even if they were to buy the cheapest property they saw,
0:33:10 > 0:33:14their mortgage repayments in Australia would double.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17But Debbie planned to work full-time down under.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19Would that tip the scales in her favour?
0:33:19 > 0:33:23The difference in wages was 16,000...
0:33:23 > 0:33:27Take away 16,681.
0:33:27 > 0:33:35- Which means we're £2,764 worse off per year.- Pounds.- Pounds.- Worse off.
0:33:38 > 0:33:39Financially.
0:33:42 > 0:33:46OK. Two grand, nearly 3,000 a year.
0:33:47 > 0:33:51That's nominal, really. I mean, it's disappointing it's minus.
0:33:51 > 0:33:55But, on an annual salary, it's the summer holiday.
0:33:55 > 0:33:58It's less than a summer holiday that we don't need to buy.
0:33:58 > 0:34:00Because we've got sunshine all the year round.
0:34:00 > 0:34:03- Just doing that to survive.- I know, but...- That's on the basics.
0:34:03 > 0:34:06You're not talking summer holiday, you're not talking savings, you're
0:34:06 > 0:34:09not talking anything on there, that's purely day-to-day living.
0:34:09 > 0:34:13Once more, Debbie's trying to stay optimistic,
0:34:13 > 0:34:17but the figures have confirmed Carl's fears.
0:34:17 > 0:34:19Based on the finances, our vote goes to...
0:34:29 > 0:34:31- UK.- In the middle.
0:34:32 > 0:34:34- UK? OK, I'm not surprised there. - Yeah.
0:34:37 > 0:34:41Just too much uncertainty. Remember, it's based on the basics.
0:34:41 > 0:34:45It is more expensive and it will be more of a challenge
0:34:45 > 0:34:46to balance the budget,
0:34:46 > 0:34:50but I think we can do it, I think, for the gains...
0:34:50 > 0:34:52It was only a little bit more expensive
0:34:52 > 0:34:55and we won't be spending every season on new outfits and new coats
0:34:55 > 0:34:57and new boots, because we just need flip-flops, hats and shorts.
0:34:57 > 0:34:59I think it'll be cheaper to live here
0:34:59 > 0:35:03once we've got here and worked it out. So, I'm in the middle.
0:35:03 > 0:35:06She may be willing to make sacrifices on the fashion front,
0:35:06 > 0:35:09but Debbie, Carl and Jacob face another hurdle
0:35:09 > 0:35:13before they decide once and for all where their future lies.
0:35:13 > 0:35:16As Ella's looked after by a childminder,
0:35:16 > 0:35:20the rest of the family sit down to watch messages from home.
0:35:20 > 0:35:23- OK, are you ready for this? Are you sure?- Definitely.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25Let's give it a go, see how it goes.
0:35:26 > 0:35:28My heart's in my mouth.
0:35:30 > 0:35:34Hi, guys! Hope you are having a wonderful time out there.
0:35:34 > 0:35:38Hello, everybody. Hope you're having a wonderful time.
0:35:38 > 0:35:41Hi, guys, hope all is well and you're having a fab time in Australia.
0:35:41 > 0:35:46Debbie, what can I say, she's an absolutely wonderful daughter.
0:35:46 > 0:35:50She's my best friend. We've always been very, very close.
0:35:50 > 0:35:52Always there for each other.
0:35:52 > 0:35:54- Carl is such a clever guy. - Oh, he's lovely.
0:35:54 > 0:35:58That man... I mean, he amazes me.
0:35:58 > 0:36:00He's like a son to us.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02Yeah, and he's like a brother to our children.
0:36:02 > 0:36:05We've only got to get on the telephone and say,
0:36:05 > 0:36:08"Carl, we've got a problem." He'll be here.
0:36:08 > 0:36:12Jacob, he's turned out to be a super lad.
0:36:12 > 0:36:17Yes, he's a very, very loving child. He's had a really good upbringing.
0:36:17 > 0:36:25We'll undoubtedly miss all of them. Jake and Ella and Debbie and Carl.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28- Yeah.- Of course we will. They've been part of...
0:36:28 > 0:36:31Carl's been part of our lives for the best part of...
0:36:33 > 0:36:38..30 years. And we've had Debbie and Jake and Ella.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40Jake's lovely.
0:36:40 > 0:36:42You are lovely.
0:36:42 > 0:36:44'Well, I would miss them.'
0:36:44 > 0:36:45I know that they're there now.
0:36:45 > 0:36:49And although we don't see as much of each other as I would like,
0:36:49 > 0:36:51I would miss them very much.
0:36:51 > 0:36:54I am the one that's going to miss them the most.
0:36:54 > 0:36:59I am the one that's in their lives the most, especially Debbie and Ella.
0:36:59 > 0:37:04And it is going to be heartbreaking, it really will be heartbreaking...
0:37:06 > 0:37:10..us having to be apart. But they will do it with my blessing.
0:37:10 > 0:37:12If you did decide to move to Australia,
0:37:12 > 0:37:14I would miss you all lots.
0:37:14 > 0:37:16But we'd be very supportive of your decision
0:37:16 > 0:37:19and we'd wish you all the best on your adventure.
0:37:19 > 0:37:21I hope that when you've done the trip to...
0:37:23 > 0:37:26..Brisbane that you find it everything you wished for...
0:37:27 > 0:37:32..and that the Australian lifestyle is what you really want.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37But...if you decide it's not for you,
0:37:37 > 0:37:43then we will welcome you back into our lives as we've always done.
0:37:43 > 0:37:48Whatever you decide, you know I will back you up all the way.
0:37:48 > 0:37:53It's what I want for all of you - to follow your hearts and to be happy.
0:37:55 > 0:37:59And yes, it's going to be absolutely awful when you go,
0:37:59 > 0:38:03if you do decide to go, but we will overcome all that,
0:38:03 > 0:38:06because we just want what's right for the four of you.
0:38:07 > 0:38:12We miss you now, and we will miss you if you decide to stay there.
0:38:12 > 0:38:17But we'd both like to thank you for your help, love,
0:38:17 > 0:38:24and consideration that you've given us over the past...27 years.
0:38:24 > 0:38:27Take care of yourselves, and live the life.
0:38:36 > 0:38:40- That's hard. Isn't that hard? - (Didn't think I'd be the one.)
0:38:41 > 0:38:43That's hard. Because that...
0:38:44 > 0:38:48It's always been the family, that's what life is all about,
0:38:48 > 0:38:50that's what living is all about.
0:38:50 > 0:38:52And that's been the motto for 36 years in my world.
0:38:52 > 0:38:55That there's no point in having sunshine
0:38:55 > 0:38:57if you've got nobody to share it with.
0:38:57 > 0:39:03Seeing messages from loved ones back home has knocked the family for six.
0:39:03 > 0:39:05Moving to Australia has been all Debbie's talked about
0:39:05 > 0:39:08for the past 18 months.
0:39:08 > 0:39:12But while the last week has shown them what they stand to gain,
0:39:12 > 0:39:15it's also revealed everything they'd lose.
0:39:15 > 0:39:18Now it's time to decide where their future lies.
0:39:22 > 0:39:25The family's week in Brisbane has given them a real insight
0:39:25 > 0:39:28into the kind of life they could be living down under.
0:39:28 > 0:39:31Although the local property market didn't instantly blow them away,
0:39:31 > 0:39:35they did eventually find a house the whole family loved.
0:39:35 > 0:39:38- What do you think, Ella-boo? - It's good.
0:39:38 > 0:39:41Discovering the ideal job might be harder to come by
0:39:41 > 0:39:44didn't help Carl's reservations about the move.
0:39:44 > 0:39:46What's the demand for jobs like?
0:39:46 > 0:39:48It's really a buyer's market, you might say.
0:39:48 > 0:39:51But for Debbie, the chance to see her children experience
0:39:51 > 0:39:55the Australian lifestyle chased away any concerns...
0:39:55 > 0:39:58Australia itself is beyond paradise. It is the dream.
0:39:58 > 0:40:01I'm really happy today, I enjoyed the lifestyle.
0:40:01 > 0:40:05..until the real cost of living in Australia dealt a devastating blow.
0:40:05 > 0:40:08You're not talking summer holiday, you're not talking savings,
0:40:08 > 0:40:11that's purely day-to-day living.
0:40:14 > 0:40:19For Debbie, Australia's been everything she was hoping for.
0:40:19 > 0:40:22Australia is more than I thought it was going to be.
0:40:22 > 0:40:24It exceeds the dream.
0:40:24 > 0:40:27And the last week has been her best shot at persuading Carl
0:40:27 > 0:40:30the country could offer the whole family a better future.
0:40:30 > 0:40:33I know I've persuaded Jacob, I know I've persuaded Ella.
0:40:33 > 0:40:37They weren't going to take much persuading anyway.
0:40:37 > 0:40:39Carl, I'm not sure if I've persuaded Carl or not, really.
0:40:39 > 0:40:43Because I've spent 18 months telling him all the wonderful things
0:40:43 > 0:40:45Australia has to offer.
0:40:45 > 0:40:47But his heart needs to be in it, too,
0:40:47 > 0:40:50and he's got more family to leave behind.
0:40:51 > 0:40:55He's finding it a lot more difficult. So, I'm not sure.
0:40:55 > 0:40:58Carl knows just how much Debbie's dream means to her.
0:40:58 > 0:41:01Debbie was over the moon, because it's everything she's ever wanted,
0:41:01 > 0:41:05but to see me, sort of, excited by some of the possibilities
0:41:05 > 0:41:09there would be by the move, I think she's got her hopes up.
0:41:09 > 0:41:12While Jacob could always see the benefits of a move...
0:41:12 > 0:41:16I hope that we'll all get to come out here together
0:41:16 > 0:41:18and enjoy this lifestyle.
0:41:18 > 0:41:22..Carl's all too aware of what he would have to leave behind in the UK.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25I'm torn, I'm just about torn.
0:41:25 > 0:41:27There's something strong holding me back,
0:41:27 > 0:41:30but I am torn, because I've seen a lot of positives
0:41:30 > 0:41:32from being out here.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34So, never say never.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37For Debbie, the moment of truth has finally arrived.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40Has she done enough to convince her husband to move their family
0:41:40 > 0:41:42to the other side of the world?
0:41:43 > 0:41:47Everything rests on their final decision as the family choose
0:41:47 > 0:41:50between a future in the UK or Australia.
0:41:52 > 0:41:56After the week we've had in Australia, our vote today goes to...
0:42:15 > 0:42:18- Australia!- Australia!
0:42:18 > 0:42:23OK, well, two out of three, what about you, Jake, you loved it?
0:42:23 > 0:42:27- Yeah, definitely. It was amazing.- And UK.
0:42:27 > 0:42:30- Yeah, predictably, I think. - Bit disappointing.
0:42:30 > 0:42:33I wanted to go flat on, I think.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35Lots of possibilities,
0:42:35 > 0:42:39some reservations about the friends and family.
0:42:39 > 0:42:42For me, I still have reservations, as well,
0:42:42 > 0:42:47but the benefits far outweigh the uncertainties and I just feel,
0:42:47 > 0:42:51as a family, we've got the skills we need to make it work,
0:42:51 > 0:42:53so Australia it is.
0:42:59 > 0:43:05Despite Debbie's very best efforts, it looks like she still has some way
0:43:05 > 0:43:10to go to persuade Carl that a life down under is a dream worth chasing.
0:43:10 > 0:43:14Wherever their future lies, we wish the family the very best of luck.
