0:00:02 > 0:00:05Many couples dream of moving down under

0:00:05 > 0:00:08in search of a better life, but, for some,

0:00:08 > 0:00:11the reality of emigrating is a tougher challenge

0:00:11 > 0:00:13than they could ever have imagined.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18Andrew Treagust has high ambitions for a new life down under.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22I could so do this for a living. It could be my office every day.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24But wife Emma's just not convinced.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28I like the idea of it, um, I don't know if I like the reality of it.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30So, he's on a mission to persuade her.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34- That view is stunning, isn't it? - But when the figures don't add up...

0:00:34 > 0:00:37We can't make this model work. It's got to be rethought.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39..will his dream be over?

0:01:03 > 0:01:07With its amazing scenery and diverse culture, New Zealand has long been

0:01:07 > 0:01:11a place of interest for British citizens looking to emigrate.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14But, of the estimated 12,000 who make the move every year,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16almost a quarter return.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19Proof indeed that achieving a dream lifestyle on

0:01:19 > 0:01:22the other side of the world isn't as easy as you think.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28Ahead of Andrew and Emma is just one week to explore whether

0:01:28 > 0:01:32New Zealand could give their family the happier, healthier lifestyle

0:01:32 > 0:01:35they've always dreamt of. At the end of their trip,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38they'll have to make a heartbreaking decision -

0:01:38 > 0:01:42whether to stay in the UK or leave family and loved ones behind

0:01:42 > 0:01:45and move to the other side of the world.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53To get from the UK to New Zealand, Emma, Andrew

0:01:53 > 0:01:57and the boys have endured 25 hours in the air.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59It's a long and difficult journey for anyone,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03but, with two young children in tow, how was the flight?

0:02:03 > 0:02:06It feels a really long time when you're on the plane, doesn't it?

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- Yeah, you wouldn't want to do it all the time...- No.- ..that's for sure.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13But, it was better than I expected with two young children.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15- And we didn't have much sleep, really, did we?- No.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20- But no toddler meltdown, so it was good.- Yeah!

0:02:21 > 0:02:25It definitely feels real now we're here and really exciting as well.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- Yeah.- It's going to be a big adventure.- And there's an aeroplane.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31- And there's an aeroplane. - Aeroplane!- I know.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Albert's still thinking about how he got here,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37but Andrew and Emma's thoughts have turned to the week ahead.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40I'm really looking forward to experiencing being here as

0:02:40 > 0:02:44if we live here, I think that's going to be a really important indicator.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47- Yeah. - That's really where my hopes...

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- And my fears are is that we're really split on our opinions.- Yeah, true.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54I just hope we either like it or dislike it.

0:02:54 > 0:02:59- Yeah, I don't want to come away more confused.- Exactly, yeah.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Where are we? We're in...?

0:03:01 > 0:03:04- New Zealand.- New Zealand, that's right!- Yay!

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Young Albert and George are blissfully unaware -

0:03:07 > 0:03:09this week, their mum and dad will have to make

0:03:09 > 0:03:12one of the toughest decisions of their lives.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Back in the UK, Andrew Treagust and Emma Woodward live with

0:03:19 > 0:03:23two-year-old Albert and baby George, just outside Brighton.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Life's good in the UK - a beautiful home, two lovely children

0:03:27 > 0:03:31and plenty of friends and family to support them,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34but Andrew wants to give it all up for a new life down under.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38We've worked really hard and I think we've probably worked too hard,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41especially over the last ten years.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48In 2012, Andrew resigned from a high-powered career in the city,

0:03:48 > 0:03:52a job he loved, but which eventually wore him down.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56It was very hard work, and the stressful nature of

0:03:56 > 0:04:01just being on all the time, was probably too much.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04If he does something, he has to do it to the nth degree

0:04:04 > 0:04:06and it has to be perfect and it has to be the best

0:04:06 > 0:04:10and, um, I think that he feels he feels like he needs a complete break

0:04:10 > 0:04:14and a complete change from the life that he has here in order to

0:04:14 > 0:04:16be able to not do that any more.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20We've worked to generate money to buy a nice house and

0:04:20 > 0:04:24do all those things that you need to do, and, during that process,

0:04:24 > 0:04:28we've realised that there's more to life than just working.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31He could just go and be...

0:04:31 > 0:04:35relaxed Andrew, rather than driven Andrew,

0:04:35 > 0:04:38and I think that's what New Zealand represents to him.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Andrew knows exactly what he wants from New Zealand.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46It's got to give us a great house, it's got to give us

0:04:46 > 0:04:48a great lifestyle, it's got to give us community,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51it's got to give us good schooling, and it's got to be

0:04:51 > 0:04:54somewhere that we want to live for the rest of our lives.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56But Emma's torn over a potential move.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59I don't know if I really want to go. I like the idea of it.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03I don't know if I like the reality of it, to be honest with you!

0:05:05 > 0:05:09And her career in the UK could prove a huge sticking point.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12I love my job. I'm passionate about what I do.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17I can really use my knowledge in order to help people effect positive

0:05:17 > 0:05:21change in their lives and that's a great thing to be able to do.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Having left school with few qualifications,

0:05:23 > 0:05:27Emma's spent more than ten years striving to achieve her dream -

0:05:27 > 0:05:29to become an educational psychologist.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Abandoning it would be an enormous ask.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37To give that up and move somewhere else that might not be as...

0:05:37 > 0:05:41as I want it to be, is really hard.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Emma also dreads the thought of breaking strong family bonds

0:05:44 > 0:05:49in the UK, especially taking Albert away from her mum, his beloved nana.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50They adore each other.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54They meet on some kind of level, it's bizarre to see

0:05:54 > 0:05:57a 60-year-old woman and a two-year-old, but they just...

0:05:57 > 0:05:59They connect and they just love each other.

0:05:59 > 0:06:04I've seen such an amazing side of my mum since Albert was born...

0:06:04 > 0:06:06that...

0:06:06 > 0:06:10..I don't think she deserves me to take him away from her.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Emma is prepared to give New Zealand a try.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19If there's a possibility that our family life could be...

0:06:19 > 0:06:24more equally shared out in terms of happiness and potential

0:06:24 > 0:06:27and enjoyability and all of those things somewhere else then

0:06:27 > 0:06:30I have a responsibility to go and explore that.

0:06:30 > 0:06:31That's about being a family, isn't it?

0:06:31 > 0:06:34That's about compromise, that's about sharing.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36But if she doesn't like what she sees,

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Andrew's dream could be over for ever.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Emma has to like it, or it's not going to work for any of us.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47If Emma says no, then no is the way it's going to go.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49The Treagust Woodwards face a massive dilemma -

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Andrew's convinced New Zealand's outdoor lifestyle would

0:06:53 > 0:06:55offer his family a better future,

0:06:55 > 0:06:58but, unless he can persuade Emma it's worth giving up a job she's

0:06:58 > 0:07:02fought so hard to get, his long-held dream could come to nothing.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05And with such strong emotional ties in the UK,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08could leaving loved ones behind prove a step too far?

0:07:13 > 0:07:16For their trial week in New Zealand, Andrew, Emma

0:07:16 > 0:07:18and the boys are visiting Auckland.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Home for their stay is a two-bedroom cottage

0:07:20 > 0:07:22on the outskirts of Devonport,

0:07:22 > 0:07:26a seaside village just a ten-minute ferry ride from the city centre,

0:07:26 > 0:07:29but will it be the introduction to Kiwi living they're hoping for?

0:07:29 > 0:07:31What do you think?

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- I think it's really cute. - It is cute.- Yeah.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- It feels quite quirky, doesn't it? - It does feel quite quirky.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- Nice kitchen - it's nice, it's just small.- It is, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47Albert's already found somewhere to sleep, but what about Mum and Dad?

0:07:47 > 0:07:52- Is it the master bedroom?- Yeah, it looks like it's the master bedroom.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- And, again, it's nice. - It's nice and it's quiet.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57Emma's quite taken with the place.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01I actually really like the feel of the house and I like the fence

0:08:01 > 0:08:04and I like the rooms all going out to the decking area.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06For a base, it's a really lovely little...

0:08:06 > 0:08:08place to be staying.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- But Andrew isn't overly impressed. - This will be good for the week.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Yeah, definitely.- And I think the boys will really enjoy it.- Yeah.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17But a house that we buy would need to be of a different size.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21With Albert still out for the count, Emma and Andrew's thoughts have

0:08:21 > 0:08:25already turned to the big decision they face at the end of the week.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28At the moment, I'm quite...

0:08:28 > 0:08:30tired from the journey, and that tells me something -

0:08:30 > 0:08:32it's a really long way, you know, so that's already

0:08:32 > 0:08:34kind of making me think...

0:08:34 > 0:08:37You know, it's a big separation from your family

0:08:37 > 0:08:40and it is a massive effort to get here.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44I'm worried, um...

0:08:44 > 0:08:46that we're not going to be able to afford the property that we

0:08:46 > 0:08:49think we are going to be able to afford.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53I've got a lot to lose if we do leave the UK and I want to make sure

0:08:53 > 0:08:56that what I'm leaving behind is being replaced by something better.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58But, in spite of their fears,

0:08:58 > 0:09:01they're both looking forward to what lies ahead.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05I'm quite excited about it. I'm quite up for it at the moment.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08It's really interesting just to be here...

0:09:08 > 0:09:12and it be turning to reality now.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Back in the UK, Emma and Andrew live with Albert and baby George

0:09:24 > 0:09:29in a four-bedroom detached house in Saltdean just outside Brighton.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31They love their house, so what kind of home

0:09:31 > 0:09:33would lure them to New Zealand?

0:09:34 > 0:09:37It's got to be a good size, four bedrooms,

0:09:37 > 0:09:41and, possibly, somewhere for guests to stay.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45It's got to be fairly open plan, it's got to be self-cleaning!

0:09:45 > 0:09:49THEY LAUGH Just bright and airy and comfortable.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53Hopefully, near to the sea, so that we can go surfing quite a lot.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54I want it to be fantastic.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Andrew and Emma own a number of properties and have set

0:09:57 > 0:09:59themselves a healthy starting budget

0:09:59 > 0:10:03of £540,000 for a home down under.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06I don't want to have to do any work, I want to be able,

0:10:06 > 0:10:08if we're going to move, to just move in.

0:10:08 > 0:10:09We've done enough.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12We've renovated house after house after house.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14I don't want to move to another country, a different job,

0:10:14 > 0:10:16and have to start renovating.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18- Not at all. That's not what the move is about.- No.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Finding the right house down under will be crucial

0:10:25 > 0:10:28if Andrew's to persuade Emma to make the move.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31So, today, we'll show them three properties based on what

0:10:31 > 0:10:33they've said they want and need.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36After they've seen each house, we'll reveal how much it costs.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Leaving Albert and George with a childminder for the day,

0:10:41 > 0:10:43their property search begins at the newly-built

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Kensington Park development on the Hibiscus Coast.

0:10:47 > 0:10:4820 minutes north of Auckland,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51this modern four-bedroom house is close to the beach,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54which should be perfect for surf-mad Andrew,

0:10:54 > 0:10:57but will it have the space they're after?

0:10:57 > 0:11:00- It's a big house! - Yeah, it's a big garage.

0:11:00 > 0:11:01- And it's a nice garage as well. - Yeah.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Early days, but Andrew seems happy with the size so far.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- Look at that view. - Oh, it's a lovely view.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- And it's big.- Yeah.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- Oh, it's nice. It's a proper family area, isn't it?- Hmm.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18It feels like it, doesn't it?

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Open-plan kitchen.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24- Not much of a garden. - Not much of a garden, is there?!

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- It's kind of an uphill yard, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31The outdoor space might not be perfect, but Emma's still impressed.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- A really nice kitchen. - It is a nice kitchen.- Yeah.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- I like the work surfaces.- And you could cook... Look at that view

0:11:37 > 0:11:38- when you're cooking. - It's really nice.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40You could just cook looking at your sea view.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- You'd want to do your washing up, wouldn't you?- No!

0:11:44 > 0:11:47The views have put a much more positive spin on things

0:11:47 > 0:11:49and the higher you go, the better they get.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53- Look at that!- Wow! That's got the wow factor, hasn't it?

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- What a view.- Now, if that doesn't entice you to get up

0:11:56 > 0:12:00and go surfing in the morning, I don't know what will. That's amazing.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02That is gorgeous and the balcony as well.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05You wouldn't be able to wake up unhappy with that view, would you?

0:12:05 > 0:12:06It's not a large room though.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Uh, oh. It had looked almost perfect.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12As this development is still being built,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15will potential neighbours be a turn off too?

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- You feel really high up, which I really like.- Yeah, I like that too.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21So, you don't just get the view, it just feels like you're not

0:12:21 > 0:12:23- so overlooked up here.- Yeah.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Even though, your neighbours are really near, aren't they?

0:12:25 > 0:12:27But, they're not...

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- They're sideways, you're not feeling encroached upon, are you?- No.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33That's a relief, as, with four bedrooms, this house

0:12:33 > 0:12:37certainly has the space the couple want for visiting friends or family.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40- But that would work really well as a guest bed, wouldn't it?- Yeah.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- It's the... - Would you want to use it more often,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- cos it's got this lovely view?- Yeah.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51This house has everything they've been looking for, but...

0:12:51 > 0:12:53I'm not sure if I'm absolutely smitten with it.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56I don't know if I've got to say I have to buy this house right now,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59but what would you not like about it? That's the thing.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Will their impressive £540,000 budget cover it?

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- So, what do you think it's going to be?- I'm not sure.

0:13:06 > 0:13:07It's going to be a lot, isn't it?

0:13:07 > 0:13:09- Yeah. Shall we find out? - Let's find out.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Wow! £648,500!

0:13:13 > 0:13:18That's more than £100,000 over budget, but...

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- That's good.- That's a lot of house for your money, isn't it?- Yeah,

0:13:21 > 0:13:22- for that view.- For that view.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25I'm surprised, I thought it was going to be nearer 900,000.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27That is really good. Let's buy it!

0:13:29 > 0:13:30It may be over budget, but,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33thanks to a property portfolio in the UK,

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Andrew and Emma would have the ability to increase

0:13:35 > 0:13:38their spending power, so they're not put off.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Next up is a spacious six-bedroom house in Mairangi Bay,

0:13:45 > 0:13:46also on the North Shore.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49With fabulous beaches and excellent kindergarten,

0:13:49 > 0:13:53and a lively community, this area could be perfect for

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Andrew and Emma's young family, but will they agree?

0:13:56 > 0:13:59- That's a really interesting shape, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01It's quite close to that main road.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03It's really close to the main road, isn't it?

0:14:03 > 0:14:04Which worries me with two young boys.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- And you can hear the road as well. - Not the best start,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10but will the main living area of the house win them over?

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Ah, here's the kitchen. I like it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15It's a nice through area, isn't it?

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- Oh, it's really nice. - It is very long and narrow.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20No, it's not. It's...I do, I think I prefer it to the other house.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- I feel it... - It's not as good as the other house.

0:14:23 > 0:14:24It feels more homely, I think.

0:14:24 > 0:14:29It does feel more homely, but it's just not as open and airy.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33Maybe it's cos it feels...lived in, because this is somebody's house.

0:14:33 > 0:14:34It is lived in.

0:14:36 > 0:14:41Looks like Andrew and Emma have different opinions on this one.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44See, I like that it feels open-plan, but it's got defined areas

0:14:44 > 0:14:46and I quite like that, because where we live at the moment,

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- it's all open-plan.- Yeah.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51And it's lovely cos you can see the kids,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54but if one area's messy, the whole area's messy.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56But they're small, defined areas, aren't they?

0:14:56 > 0:14:59It's like...the rooms feel quite small to me.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01Size is still an issue for Andrew

0:15:01 > 0:15:03and it's not the only problem they've noticed.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06There's a reason why that's drawn, isn't it?

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Because that's obviously quite overlooked.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12And there's a shared access right outside of the house.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15- Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that you can't control over here.- Exactly.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19I'm not sure this is going to be the house that convinces either

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Andrew or Emma to make the move down under.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24And then the kids' bedroom is slightly bigger...

0:15:26 > 0:15:29It's a good room, apart from its view onto the road...

0:15:30 > 0:15:32..which I don't like.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36- They're not huge bedrooms, are they? None of them really.- No.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38There weren't huge bedrooms in the other house really though,

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- were they?- Bigger than this.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43One thing this house does have that the last one didn't is

0:15:43 > 0:15:45the granny annexe that the couple are looking for.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48It's a completely different spin on it, doesn't it?

0:15:48 > 0:15:50This is perfect for when people come and stay

0:15:50 > 0:15:54- and they literally walk themselves down and there's not a problem.- Yeah.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58And you can have friends with kids stay because there's two spaces.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02- Yeah.- The grandparents would be happy as, wouldn't they?- Yeah.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04- It'd be lovely. - That's something they agree on,

0:16:04 > 0:16:06but will the garden offer the space

0:16:06 > 0:16:08- the couple would like for Albert and George?- It's OK.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10It's not much of a garden though, is it?

0:16:10 > 0:16:13No, the other one didn't have much of a garden, though, did it?

0:16:13 > 0:16:17And there are two big deck areas and a garden, so, actually,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20outside space is quite big, it's just all on different levels.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23- Do you think I'm being quite fussy? - What? You, Andrew?

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- Yeah.- You have to be fussy, I think, but, still,

0:16:26 > 0:16:28there's not much of a garden space.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31So, I suppose we'd better go and see how much it's worth, really.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33If we can't afford it, there's not much point.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38Will their starting budget of £540,000 cover the cost

0:16:38 > 0:16:41if they did agree to go for this house?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44I think about 700 to 750.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46- I reckon 850.- Let's see.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50- Wow!- There you go.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52687.

0:16:52 > 0:16:57It's almost £150,000 over their budget, but finding the extra funds

0:16:57 > 0:17:01doesn't seem to be a problem for Andrew and Emma.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03That's a good price for what you get, isn't it?

0:17:03 > 0:17:04Yeah, it's interesting.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06And now confusing.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10- It still doesn't make me want to go and buy it right now.- No.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13It's affordable, but Andrew's heart isn't in this house.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16With two down, let's hope the last property can offer the couple

0:17:16 > 0:17:18everything they're looking for.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21It's a four-bedroom house in Torbay, also on the North Shore

0:17:21 > 0:17:23and close to the beach.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26The house has a completely separate granny annexe, perfect for

0:17:26 > 0:17:30visiting parents, and offers the open-plan living the couple love.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33From the outside, it looks promising.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37Yeah, it's lovely.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40- But will the interiors be what they're after?- Wow.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42- It's nice.- Yeah. - Oh, my gosh, it's nice.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51That's OK, isn't it?

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Not too shabby, is it?

0:17:53 > 0:17:55That view is stunning, isn't it?

0:17:55 > 0:17:59And it's all about being outside and eating and barbecuing.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- Oh, it just feels so nice, it feels quite secluded, doesn't it?- But...

0:18:03 > 0:18:05You can hear the road though.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Can you get to the kitchen?

0:18:06 > 0:18:08DISTANT TRAFFIC

0:18:08 > 0:18:12- Yeah.- The road noise could be a problem, but can Emma see beyond it?

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Well, it is absolutely beautiful,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17it's just also...you want to kind of...

0:18:17 > 0:18:19..take everything out and start again.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21- It's just not done to my taste at all.- Yeah.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25First the road, then the decor... Are cracks beginning to show?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28- It's quite a small room. - They're all small bedrooms.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30- Do you know when you're kind of coming into the house...- Yeah.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33- ..and it looks really quite imposing?- It's imposing, isn't it?

0:18:33 > 0:18:37- Definitely not as big inside as you think it's going to be.- No.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Especially when you consider that there's the granny flat downstairs.

0:18:40 > 0:18:45As it stands now, this may not be the house for Emma or Andrew,

0:18:45 > 0:18:47but could the cost change their mind?

0:18:47 > 0:18:49I don't feel confident about making a guess. What do you think?

0:18:49 > 0:18:53- I think slightly more than the last one.- OK, what about...?

0:18:53 > 0:18:57I just think it's so central in Torbay and it's on a nice road...

0:18:57 > 0:19:00- About 750?- I think about 7.- OK.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04My goodness!

0:19:04 > 0:19:07- That's great value. - Really good value.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10£521,000.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14That's almost £20,000 under budget.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17- If you spent...what? £50,000 changing it...- Mm-hm.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19..that's still...

0:19:20 > 0:19:24..70 grand cheaper than the last cheapest house.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26I'm really surprised.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28Exploring the local housing market has been

0:19:28 > 0:19:30a real eye-opener for Andrew and Emma.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33Property one was something of a show stopper,

0:19:33 > 0:19:36and less expensive than the couple expected.

0:19:36 > 0:19:41The second house was £147,000 over their starting budget,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43but the price didn't seem to put them off.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47And although property three didn't live up to first impressions,

0:19:47 > 0:19:49it's price tag meant they could afford

0:19:49 > 0:19:51to turn it into their dream home.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54So, based on what they know now,

0:19:54 > 0:19:59will the couple vote for property in the UK or New Zealand?

0:19:59 > 0:20:01We've had an interesting day looking at properties and,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03based on that, we vote for...

0:20:10 > 0:20:12BOTH: New Zealand!

0:20:14 > 0:20:16It was a good day, wasn't it?

0:20:16 > 0:20:17A really good day.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20I was really surprised that you got that much property for your money.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- Yeah.- Amazing locations, everything that we asked for on spec...

0:20:24 > 0:20:25Big enough for the family.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- Big enough for friends and family to come and stay.- Yeah.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31And amazing views and in a lovely location.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33I don't know what else you could ask for, really.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36It's a great start for Andrew.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Emma's first vote for New Zealand is a big step in the right direction.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47The desire to come to New Zealand has always been

0:20:47 > 0:20:51about the relaxed outdoor lifestyle they could enjoy as a family.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54So, will a day out of Kiwi style living be enough to keep

0:20:54 > 0:20:56the dream alive?

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Andrew and Emma are both keen surfers, so we've taken them to

0:21:00 > 0:21:05Piha Beach, a popular surfing spot just 40 minutes drive from the city.

0:21:05 > 0:21:09While baby George is looked after by a child minder, it's a chance for

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Andrew to show Emma, and Albert,

0:21:11 > 0:21:13the kind of lifestyle he's been dreaming about.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17- I think we'd come down every weekend, wouldn't we?- Yeah!

0:21:17 > 0:21:20It's so close to the city and it's such a beautiful place,

0:21:20 > 0:21:22not just a beautiful beach.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Previously self-taught, the day starts with a quick lesson

0:21:25 > 0:21:27for Mum and Dad, while Albert plays on the beach.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30So, by getting your feet 100% right,

0:21:30 > 0:21:32your board becomes an extension of your body.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- 'It's so much fun.- Yeah.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38'Not the kind of surf you get very often in the UK, really.'

0:21:38 > 0:21:40- Well, where we live, anyway.- No.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Albert might be a little young to fully appreciate the surf,

0:21:44 > 0:21:46but can Andrew and Emma picture this for his future?

0:21:46 > 0:21:50We'd love to see the boys growing up in a wet suit and just surfing

0:21:50 > 0:21:53every weekend, getting really good at it, being really natural.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Just being happy, enjoying it, you know?

0:21:55 > 0:21:58It's the sort of thing that I suppose, we wish we'd done as kids

0:21:58 > 0:22:00and it'd be really lovely to afford

0:22:00 > 0:22:03- Albert and George that, wouldn't it, really?- Definitely.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16After their morning riding waves,

0:22:16 > 0:22:20the couple take the boys to a nearby park for some playtime.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Oh, there's a cool ship down here...

0:22:22 > 0:22:26Emma knows the day so far is everything Andrew's been hoping for.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29It ticks a lot of boxes for him in terms of the kind of work-life

0:22:29 > 0:22:32balance and getting that kind of adrenaline hit in a lifestyle

0:22:32 > 0:22:35rather than in kind of a high-pressure career, which is

0:22:35 > 0:22:37where he seems to get it in the UK.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40But is Andrew confident he can get Emma to agree to this

0:22:40 > 0:22:43lifestyle on a permanent basis?

0:22:43 > 0:22:46She seems really comfortable here and, um,

0:22:46 > 0:22:50'when we've been driving about, she says sometimes that she thinks she

0:22:50 > 0:22:53'could live here, so I think that's a really good indication of

0:22:53 > 0:22:55'the way things might go in the future.'

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Watching the kids here has been brilliant,

0:22:57 > 0:23:02I don't feel so far away from home. It feels familiar, but...different.

0:23:02 > 0:23:08It's... It feels relaxed and then I think about being at home...

0:23:08 > 0:23:10I don't know, really.

0:23:10 > 0:23:11They're all kind of...

0:23:15 > 0:23:17There's no clear tipping point at the moment.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20Will Andrew be disappointed as the family choose

0:23:20 > 0:23:23between a lifestyle in New Zealand or the UK?

0:23:23 > 0:23:27- Ouch!- Sorry. - I got flagged on the head!

0:23:27 > 0:23:28ALBERT LAUGHS

0:23:28 > 0:23:32We've had a lovely day today and, based on that, we vote for...

0:23:40 > 0:23:42- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45- New Zealand.- Yay!

0:23:45 > 0:23:48You're fantastic, aren't you? You've got sand all over your face!

0:23:48 > 0:23:50You said, "New Zealand!"

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Emma's vote for New Zealand may have given him some confidence,

0:23:59 > 0:24:01but Andrew knows there's a much bigger battle ahead.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07Back in the UK, Emma loves her job as an educational psychologist.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10It's a career she's worked hard for.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14I kind of went back to college in the evenings and worked and got...

0:24:14 > 0:24:17the GCSEs that I needed and then did an Access course

0:24:17 > 0:24:22and then took myself off to University and did my degree

0:24:22 > 0:24:25and then worked for three years

0:24:25 > 0:24:29to save up enough money really to

0:24:29 > 0:24:31take another three years out to do my doctorate.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35I'm really passionate about my job, it's really important to me

0:24:35 > 0:24:39and it enables me to empower people to make change in their own lives.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Giving all this up would be a massive wrench.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45I feel quite entrenched in my role here,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48I feel quite loyal to where I work, um,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51I feel quite loyal to my colleagues and my boss,

0:24:51 > 0:24:55because it's an amazing place to work and I'm going to have to,

0:24:55 > 0:24:59potentially, give all that up if we move.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02Andrew's dreaming of a complete career change,

0:25:02 > 0:25:04if the couple did move.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06I'd love to be a snowboard instructor.

0:25:06 > 0:25:11I can imagine waking up and being really excited

0:25:11 > 0:25:14about going to the mountain and having the mountain as your office.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18You know, it's a fantastic dream to have.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20But unless Emma can find the right post,

0:25:20 > 0:25:23his dreams could come to nothing.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26It's a deal breaker for me, I suppose. It is a deal breaker for me.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29'You can't change the way that you feel about it and,

0:25:29 > 0:25:33'if it doesn't feel right, I genuinely don't know'

0:25:33 > 0:25:34if I'd be able to do it.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39The stakes are high. While the boys are looked after by a childminder,

0:25:39 > 0:25:43Andrew and Emma set out to explore work opportunities in Auckland.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46Andrew's dream rests on Emma being satisfied

0:25:46 > 0:25:49she can get the type of work she wants.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52I think, if this bit doesn't come right then, obviously,

0:25:52 > 0:25:56it doesn't really matter whether I prefer the rest of it or not, um...

0:25:56 > 0:25:58because I'm going to be the main breadwinner.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01We've arranged for Emma to meet a clinical psychologist

0:26:01 > 0:26:03at the Waitemata District Health Board.

0:26:03 > 0:26:08- Hi!- How are you? I'm Tina. I'm the psychology professional leader here.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12- So, this is the sort of place that, um, you would be working...- Mm-hm.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16..when you're working in a team. It's open-plan, most of the offices.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- Yeah.- Across town, Andrew's pursuing his dream

0:26:19 > 0:26:21to become a snowboard instructor at

0:26:21 > 0:26:24New Zealand's only indoor snow sports facility

0:26:24 > 0:26:27and he can't wait to hit the slopes.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35I could so do this for a living. It could be my office every day.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38Back in the real world,

0:26:38 > 0:26:40Emma's finding out about her work prospects.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43Based on my CV, would I be able to get a job in New Zealand?

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- Yes, very definitely. You're on our wanted list.- OK.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50Clinical psychologists and educational psychologists

0:26:50 > 0:26:51are needed in New Zealand.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54You've got experience and training in both those areas.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58So, it's really a matter of what sort of area you'd like to work in?

0:26:58 > 0:27:00OK, that's good news. Excellent.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04That's a good start,

0:27:04 > 0:27:08but Emma's worried working practices might be different in New Zealand.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12You're, um, wanting to work more on the child and family area,

0:27:12 > 0:27:15- aren't you? - That's my qualification, yeah.- Yes.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Usually, the psychologists work sort of across the whole, um,

0:27:18 > 0:27:23sector, but you can specialise in the younger preschoolers

0:27:23 > 0:27:25- or you can work with the older adolescents.- OK.

0:27:25 > 0:27:30You would work with these children, with their families, and with the

0:27:30 > 0:27:35schools in order to try and sort of support them through their problems.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37OK, that sounds very similar, actually.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39That's one concern put to rest.

0:27:39 > 0:27:44- What is the average day for a psychologist in New Zealand?- Busy!

0:27:44 > 0:27:45Same!

0:27:46 > 0:27:50Back at the snow dome, Andrew's meeting manager Brad Alwyn

0:27:50 > 0:27:52to find out what work opportunities could exist

0:27:52 > 0:27:55at some of New Zealand's snowboard resorts.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57So, I've been snowboarding about ten years.

0:27:57 > 0:28:01I'm trying to be realistic about it being a career choice,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03but really a lifestyle opportunity.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07I'm just really exploring from your point of view whether it's

0:28:07 > 0:28:11feasible and whether it's something that I could potentially do.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13It's definitely feasible.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16It's worth, once you arrive, doing a New Zealand based qualification.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19Through the course, we can see how well you actually teach.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23We can teach anyone to snowboard, we can't teach everyone to teach.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26- Yeah.- Once qualified, another concern for Andrew

0:28:26 > 0:28:28is where the work would actually be.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30We have North and South Island resorts,

0:28:30 > 0:28:33so instructors live wherever they can sort of find the most work.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36In a full day, an average ski instructor would probably

0:28:36 > 0:28:39- work six hours during peak season. - Mm-hm.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42- Your part-time or casual instructor may only get two hours a week.- OK.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45The window that we have to make money and to ski

0:28:45 > 0:28:49- and for you to be employed is four months, if we're lucky.- Yeah.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51That definitely wouldn't be a full-time option,

0:28:51 > 0:28:55which would put even more pressure on Emma to earn a good salary.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58Ultimately, how much as a psychologist would you get

0:28:58 > 0:29:00paid to work in New Zealand?

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Right, I don't want you to have a, you know,

0:29:02 > 0:29:04look of shock on your face!

0:29:04 > 0:29:09Um, with three to ten years' experience, it's nearer 61 to,

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- say about, 97,000.- OK.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15Um, you'd be somewhere in the middle there, I'd imagine.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19That's around £10,000 less than Emma earns back home.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23When British psychologists hear about this, they go, "Oh, no!"

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Because it is a drop, but then we sort of say,

0:29:25 > 0:29:28"But the lifestyle's great!"

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Could Andrew's potential income fill the shortfall?

0:29:31 > 0:29:33As a rookie or a first-year employee,

0:29:33 > 0:29:37you can expect to earn minimum wage or about 14.50 an hour.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40As you up your qualifications, you can expect more money.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46That wouldn't make up for the deficit in Emma's salary.

0:29:46 > 0:29:51It may be his dream job, but Andrew would be earning the minimum wage.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54Today's given the couple plenty of food for thought.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Could it be the end of Andrew's dream?

0:29:58 > 0:30:01So, based on today, our vote is for...

0:30:12 > 0:30:13Undecided.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16Me too!

0:30:16 > 0:30:18Why undecided?

0:30:18 > 0:30:24Um, because, although I felt that some of my fears were allayed,

0:30:24 > 0:30:27- um, I still really like my job at home.- Hmm.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30It's a great lifestyle opportunity, I'm just not sure I'm ready to take

0:30:30 > 0:30:33a lifestyle opportunity right now.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41Despite loving the lifestyle, the cold, hard facts remain.

0:30:41 > 0:30:46If Emma and Andrew move here, they would be earning a lot less money.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49'Although they own three properties, they're reluctant to sell them all

0:30:49 > 0:30:52'in case a move down under doesn't work out.'

0:30:52 > 0:30:56What they get for their home in Brighton could be crucial.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59They believe it's worth around £350,000,

0:30:59 > 0:31:03so we've sent round two estate agents to find out if they're right.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06- Oh, this is nice.- It's funny seeing your house on TV.- Isn't it?

0:31:06 > 0:31:08This is a really good room.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11It's obviously been rooms which were formerly divided making one

0:31:11 > 0:31:16big room now with a well-fitted kitchen with lots of storage

0:31:16 > 0:31:19and a good built-in cooker.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21- ALBERT:- That is my house.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23That's right, that's yours and baby George's room.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25'OK, great to see a utility room,'

0:31:25 > 0:31:28that's a real selling feature, especially when you've got open-plan

0:31:28 > 0:31:30living cos you really don't want to have the noise of

0:31:30 > 0:31:34the washing machine while you're entertaining friends.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36(Where is she going?) THEY GASP

0:31:36 > 0:31:40- Whose room is that?- That's my bedroom!- That's your bedroom.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Really light with a dual aspect makes a perfect kids'

0:31:43 > 0:31:44bedroom or guest bedroom as well.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Now, this is a nice room.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Um, yeah, it's good to have those wardrobes right the way across and,

0:31:49 > 0:31:54actually, the shower room with an oversized shower cubicle is great.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57So, I'd have to say this is a really nice master bedroom.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00So, a house of this size and style in this location,

0:32:00 > 0:32:01I'd value at between

0:32:01 > 0:32:06£285,000 and £295,000. So, £285,000 for a quick sale.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08Not much.

0:32:08 > 0:32:09For a house like this in this area,

0:32:09 > 0:32:14I'd suggest an asking price of £380,000.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16If we were looking for a quick sale,

0:32:16 > 0:32:18we would expect to ask

0:32:18 > 0:32:19£350,000.

0:32:19 > 0:32:24- There's £100,000 range there. - Yeah, massive.- 350, 360,

0:32:24 > 0:32:26I think would be about right, wouldn't you? Realistically?

0:32:26 > 0:32:28It's good news, but to help them

0:32:28 > 0:32:31understand the financial side of life down under, we've

0:32:31 > 0:32:36prepared a comparison of the cost of living in the UK and New Zealand.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38They start with the weekly food shop.

0:32:38 > 0:32:39Fruit...

0:32:39 > 0:32:42- Fruit's quite a lot more expensive. - It's quite a lot more expensive.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45- Spinach is randomly quite a lot more expensive.- Spinach...

0:32:45 > 0:32:47£1.28 more expensive.

0:32:47 > 0:32:52Semi-skimmed milk is £3.09 more expensive.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55That is hugely more expensive. What's cheaper?

0:32:55 > 0:32:59- Couscous is cheaper.- OK. - And flour is cheaper.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02So, you have to do a lot of baking,

0:33:02 > 0:33:05but almost everything is more expensive.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07Unless Andrew and Emma change their shopping habits,

0:33:07 > 0:33:12they'll be forking out substantially more for food in New Zealand.

0:33:12 > 0:33:16- £37.43 more expensive.- Wow.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20That's an increase of more than £150 every month.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23Basing their calculations on the final property they saw,

0:33:23 > 0:33:27the couple move on to compare the bigger costs of living.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31- So, our mortgage in the UK is £670. - Mm-hm.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34Our mortgage in New Zealand for the property that we

0:33:34 > 0:33:38looked at would be £1,583.

0:33:38 > 0:33:42So, that's an increase in mortgage payments of...

0:33:42 > 0:33:45£913 a month.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48- Which is...that's the big one. That's not great at all.- No.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51The figures aren't looking good.

0:33:51 > 0:33:55Will the move turn out as little more than a pipe dream?

0:33:55 > 0:33:57So, we'll be a total of

0:33:57 > 0:34:01- £1,784 worse off...- Worse off...

0:34:01 > 0:34:05..on this model in New Zealand.

0:34:07 > 0:34:11- And that's huge.- That's massive. - And we couldn't effectively do that.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14With the figures weighing heavily on their minds, it's time for

0:34:14 > 0:34:19Emma and Andrew to choose between finances in the UK or New Zealand.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22So, based on what we've just been looking at, we vote for...

0:34:29 > 0:34:31- Undecided.- UK.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36I just think that we can't make this model work

0:34:36 > 0:34:39and it's got to be rethought.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43That's why I voted undecided, because it's not...it doesn't kill

0:34:43 > 0:34:46- the idea of moving to New Zealand completely dead.- Yeah.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49It just means we need to rethink how we would do it,

0:34:49 > 0:34:52but there is wriggle room and that's why I've gone undecided.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55- OK.- Based on what we've done, it's just not working.

0:34:56 > 0:34:57Simple as that. Yeah.

0:35:03 > 0:35:07Emma and Andrew's trial week has revealed some harsh home truths,

0:35:07 > 0:35:08but there's more to come.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11Emma's always been worried about taking her children away from her

0:35:11 > 0:35:14mum, so will watching messages from friends

0:35:14 > 0:35:17and loved ones at home prove too heartbreaking?

0:35:17 > 0:35:19While baby George takes a nap,

0:35:19 > 0:35:23they settle down to watch the DVD together.

0:35:23 > 0:35:28- Albert, look.- Hi, Emma and the boys. Hope you're having a fab time.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30What's that?

0:35:30 > 0:35:32Hope you're having a lovely time in New Zealand

0:35:32 > 0:35:35and we're missing you and we hope to see you very soon.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38Hi, Andrew and Emma, hope you're having a fantastic time.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40Hope you're having a wonderful time.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42They're lovely. They're really lovely.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44A very close family. Um, they...

0:35:44 > 0:35:49they like going out and doing things together, they like being by the sea.

0:35:49 > 0:35:53They're free spirits. They are adventurous.

0:35:53 > 0:35:55They've done a lot of travelling.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59Emma is very zesty. Um...

0:35:59 > 0:36:02I'm pretty proud to have her as a daughter, actually,

0:36:02 > 0:36:03because she's full of life.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05That's my Grandma!

0:36:05 > 0:36:10I'm incredibly proud of when, you know, she got her doctorate

0:36:10 > 0:36:15and then went on to become a doctor of psychology.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17Andrew's my younger brother.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20Um, he's always been a bit of a wanderer.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23He's always liked doing a lot of travelling.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27But he's a great guy, he really is a great guy, and he adores his kids.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30And he's always there if you need him.

0:36:30 > 0:36:34Andrew and I lost our dad coming up for three years now

0:36:34 > 0:36:38and we have become much closer since we lost Dad

0:36:38 > 0:36:42and it's really nice having him close.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45Even, you know, even though we may not get a chance to see him

0:36:45 > 0:36:50as much as we'd like, having Andrew nearby is a comfort.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53It is the little ones that I think...

0:36:53 > 0:36:58- just tugs at your heartstrings a bit more.- Yeah, it's...yeah, yeah.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00Yeah, yeah.

0:37:00 > 0:37:04Albert is gorgeous. Obviously, I'm a little bit biased.

0:37:04 > 0:37:09He's the best grandson in the world. There's nobody like Albert.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Um, he's beautiful.

0:37:11 > 0:37:16I love his eyes, I love his smile, I love the way his eyes light up

0:37:16 > 0:37:18when I walk in the room. We love each other.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21We have a real bond, we do, we really have.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25Albert is absolutely gorgeous and he loves coming to our house

0:37:25 > 0:37:29and he smiles and he's as good as gold and he loves the horses

0:37:29 > 0:37:32and just a lovely, lovely little boy.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34Yeah, there would be a gap, a huge gap.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37'Also, the opportunity of not getting to know George.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39'I think that's the big thing.'

0:37:41 > 0:37:44I have a small circle of very close friends and

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Emma and Andrew are sort of in that circle,

0:37:46 > 0:37:50so it would leave a bit of a gap if they went.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55It would feel quite empty, wouldn't it, really?

0:37:55 > 0:37:59- Just knowing that they're not here. - It would be hard, I think.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03Yeah, well, if they enjoy their selves out there, then,

0:38:03 > 0:38:06they can make their decision, but it's always nice to have them be

0:38:06 > 0:38:08just an hour or so drive away. Oh!

0:38:08 > 0:38:10We can't pretend we're happy about it.

0:38:12 > 0:38:14But, we're not unhappy about it, you know,

0:38:14 > 0:38:18it's just the fact we're going to miss you, miss the kids.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21But, for all that, I hope it goes well for you and it's what you

0:38:21 > 0:38:25really, really want and, if that's the case, then we're all for it.

0:38:34 > 0:38:39- Your mum looked a bit devastated. - Hmm, Mum will really miss the kids.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42I think it's the grandparent connection that's the really,

0:38:42 > 0:38:45really hard one and that's the one that came across strongest

0:38:45 > 0:38:50on the film and I think that's the biggest concern for me.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52I might wake up one morning

0:38:52 > 0:38:56and kind of think that the boys are missing out on so much

0:38:56 > 0:38:59because they're not near the grandparents, even though

0:38:59 > 0:39:02they've got everything here - you know, nice climate,

0:39:02 > 0:39:04beaches, lifestyle, that kind of thing.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07That's not really something you can replace so much, is it?

0:39:07 > 0:39:09I just don't know.

0:39:09 > 0:39:13It's a massive responsibility saying what can be offered here is better...

0:39:15 > 0:39:18or is worth halting those relationships in its tracks

0:39:18 > 0:39:20and I don't know if I want that

0:39:20 > 0:39:22responsibility to make that call, really.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25You know, I don't know if we're just confusing it. I don't know.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29No, I don't know, but we've got to do what's best...

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- ..for us and the kids.- Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35But that's part of the decision, isn't it?

0:39:35 > 0:39:39You know, that's a big...to say that growing up in New Zealand is

0:39:39 > 0:39:41more important or better for them

0:39:41 > 0:39:45than having a relationship with their grandparents is not really

0:39:45 > 0:39:49- a decision...they're not two options I want to decide between.- No.

0:39:51 > 0:39:52Yeah.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05Hearing messages from those they love the most has been

0:40:05 > 0:40:09a painful reminder of what Emma and Andrew will lose

0:40:09 > 0:40:11if they decide to leave the UK

0:40:11 > 0:40:16and it seems Emma is especially torn over what to do for her children.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19Give them a new life in New Zealand or keep them close

0:40:19 > 0:40:23to the grandparents who love them so dearly?

0:40:23 > 0:40:26With their trial week coming to an end,

0:40:26 > 0:40:29Emma and Andrew know they can't put their decision off for much longer.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32I hoped New Zealand would be good.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35It's been amazing and the country itself, I love to bits.

0:40:35 > 0:40:38I really enjoyed getting a sense of what it'd be like to live here rather

0:40:38 > 0:40:40than just to be on holiday here.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42I think it's been an invaluable experience.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44For the couple, the real pull of New Zealand was always

0:40:44 > 0:40:47the lifestyle it could potentially offer.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50So, has Kiwi living delivered on its promise?

0:40:50 > 0:40:54'To see Albert in a wetsuit standing around by the surfboards

0:40:54 > 0:40:57'and seeing the other kids surfing. That's a real...'

0:40:57 > 0:41:00wow moment, so that's something that I loved

0:41:00 > 0:41:04and I think he would grow up just enjoying that beach.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08But, with so much at stake, will the lifestyle be enough to

0:41:08 > 0:41:12convince Emma to move to the other side of the world?

0:41:12 > 0:41:16'It would be very easy to sit here in this beautiful park

0:41:16 > 0:41:18'surrounded by a really family friendly environment

0:41:18 > 0:41:21'and be seduced by the idea of living in New Zealand,'

0:41:21 > 0:41:25until I've got that flag in my hand, I don't know how I'm going to vote.

0:41:25 > 0:41:31She has told me she's willing to sacrifice part of her

0:41:31 > 0:41:35career aspirations, if you like, for the lifestyle of us

0:41:35 > 0:41:38and our children, and I think that's a lovely thing to do,

0:41:38 > 0:41:41but I'm not sure how I feel about that.

0:41:41 > 0:41:45So, after 15 years of talking about it, when it comes to the

0:41:45 > 0:41:49final turn of the cards, where do Andrew and Emma see their future?

0:41:49 > 0:41:51New Zealand or the UK?

0:41:51 > 0:41:53We've had a really interesting week and,

0:41:53 > 0:41:56based on everything we've seen, we vote...

0:42:08 > 0:42:09- New Zealand.- Undecided.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14- Undecided, eh?- I think there were two sticking points for me.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17There was the finances and there was friends and family.

0:42:17 > 0:42:20If everyone was here and the finances were bad,

0:42:20 > 0:42:22then I would have said New Zealand.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26And if the finances were better and we got to visit our families

0:42:26 > 0:42:28more often, then I would have said New Zealand.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31I don't disagree and I think, especially as property is a lot more

0:42:31 > 0:42:33expensive and the cost of living is

0:42:33 > 0:42:35a lot more expensive than I thought, um,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38there are still some questions that we need to answer,

0:42:38 > 0:42:40but I still think it's a really serious option.
