0:00:03 > 0:00:06If you passionately believed your future lay on the other side

0:00:06 > 0:00:09of the world, but your partner didn't agree,

0:00:09 > 0:00:12how would you go about convincing them to make the move?

0:00:12 > 0:00:15A move that would mean giving up everything they've worked

0:00:15 > 0:00:19so hard to achieve for a country they'd never been to.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21For more than 30 years,

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Karen Davidson's dreamt of a life down under.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Since I was at school, probably, I've been pulled towards Australia.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31But her vision has split the family right down the middle.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33My dad's not so, like, keen on it like me.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35I don't want to move.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37It's a big factor... I'm not for moving.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41Karen has just one week to win them round... I'm getting that echo.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42I don't see the sea.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45I would change that, it's just not for me.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48..or her long-held dream could be over before it's begun.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51I just hope it doesn't go that way.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Living the Australian lifestyle has been a dream for generations

0:01:18 > 0:01:22of British families, and plenty make it a reality.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26Today, it's estimated that 1 in 23 people living in Oz were

0:01:26 > 0:01:28born in the UK.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30But leaving behind loved ones on the other

0:01:30 > 0:01:33side of the world can be too much for some

0:01:33 > 0:01:37and many families return home with their plans in ruins.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41Karen Davidson has just one week to persuade her husband

0:01:41 > 0:01:44and daughter that their futures lie in Australia.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48The whole family will experience the reality of everyday life

0:01:48 > 0:01:50down under before deciding once and for all

0:01:50 > 0:01:57whether to follow Karen's dream of a new life there or to stay in the UK.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59After more than 11,000 miles in the air,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03the Davidson family touch down on Australian soil for

0:02:03 > 0:02:06the very first time and when it comes to the flight,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08there's already a difference in opinion.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10It was an epic of a journey,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12but not as bad as we actually thought it would be.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16It was horrifying! It's made me realise that it is quite far.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Still excited though, still want to be here. Karen's staying positive...

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Just hoping it's going to be all I want it to be, really.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Hoping that this three...

0:02:26 > 0:02:29take on board what I'm trying to do for them

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and get a positive result at the end of the day.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33..but Gary's playing it cool.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Let's see what, you know, the next couple of days presents us with.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Having finally reached Australia,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43ahead lies a week that could change the family's future for ever.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Meet the Davidsons - mum Karen, dad Gary,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Blair, who's 12, and Skye, aged 9.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58Originally from Scotland, the family moved to Crewe 11 years ago.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02They enjoy their life in the North West, but, despite having never

0:03:02 > 0:03:07visited Australia, Karen's convinced a better future lies down under.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09'Well, it has always been there for as long as I can remember.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12'My aunt lived in Australia'

0:03:12 > 0:03:16when I was in my teens and she used to, obviously,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18tell me stories about what Australia was like

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and the lifestyle that she had and, as a child, obviously,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23listening to that, you're thinking, "Oh, that sounds amazing."

0:03:23 > 0:03:27The Davidsons are a sporty family and love spending time together

0:03:27 > 0:03:30outdoors, but it's not often that possible.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33I don't think we get a chance to do it enough here.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37In the wintertime, you're so limited to what you can do as a family

0:03:37 > 0:03:41and the time constraints, obviously, with Gary's job.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Karen's convinced Australia's climate

0:03:43 > 0:03:47and culture would offer the whole family a better work-life balance.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52'Being able to spend time together,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54'whether it be sitting on the beach or walking'

0:03:54 > 0:03:57and just being outside hitting a few golf balls together would be

0:03:57 > 0:03:59really important...

0:03:59 > 0:04:00to all four of us.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04But husband Gary doesn't share

0:04:04 > 0:04:05Karen's dream.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Everyone talks about the lifestyle in Australia.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09That's all I've ever heard.

0:04:09 > 0:04:14And I am not convinced that it is any better...

0:04:14 > 0:04:17than what you can make for yourself in the UK.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19And he's struggling to see why Karen's

0:04:19 > 0:04:23so drawn to a country none of the family have ever visited.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27I honestly don't know where Karen's dream has come from.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29I don't see what the pull is.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32I don't see why we should risk moving away from what

0:04:32 > 0:04:36we have to uncharted waters.

0:04:37 > 0:04:38To me it's a big risk.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Gary knows Karen only wants the best for her family,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44but if he is ever to be persuaded to make the move,

0:04:44 > 0:04:49Australia would have to offer a lot more than just sun, sea and sand.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52His job in the rail industry in the UK

0:04:52 > 0:04:54is something Gary's passionate about.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Walking away from my current employer would be really hard.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00There's a long-term plan...

0:05:00 > 0:05:02and I'm part of that plan.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Unless Australia can offer similar or better work prospects,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Karen's hopes could be dashed.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09I wouldn't say I'm scared.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11I would say I'm petrified.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17I don't want to walk away from something that, to me, is ideal.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18Oh, I thought that was in.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21And when it comes to Blair and Skye's view on Australia,

0:05:21 > 0:05:23they're as divided as Mum and Dad.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26There's definitely two sides within the family.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29There's a For camp and there's an Against camp.

0:05:29 > 0:05:30I do want to move to Australia.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32I want to stay here.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Now, Karen's got just one week to persuade Gary

0:05:35 > 0:05:39and Skye that her lifelong idea of the perfect life down under

0:05:39 > 0:05:43is one the whole family should be enjoying.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45It's a big risk moving to the other side of the world,

0:05:45 > 0:05:47there's no doubt about it.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51Erm, but it's a risk that I'm willing to take.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Um...

0:05:58 > 0:06:00I think it's just maybe starting to hit home,

0:06:00 > 0:06:02how big a move it actually is.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05The family are split down the middle over the move.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Karen and son Blair believe Australia could offer

0:06:08 > 0:06:12a better quality of life and an outdoors lifestyle,

0:06:12 > 0:06:17but Gary and Skye are completely content with their lives in the UK.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20The next week will see the family decide, once and for all,

0:06:20 > 0:06:22where their future home lies.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29The Davidsons will be spending their week in Adelaide,

0:06:29 > 0:06:33capital of South Australia, nicknamed the 20 Minute City because

0:06:33 > 0:06:35its airport, city centre

0:06:35 > 0:06:38and beaches can all be reached within 20 minutes.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42It's a favourite destination for Brits seeking a new life down under.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45The final leg of their long journey brings the family to the

0:06:45 > 0:06:50green, leafy suburb of Lynton in the southern foothills of the city.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54Home for the week is Treetops and first impressions are promising.

0:06:54 > 0:06:55You can see the sea.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Waking up to that every morning would be lovely, wouldn't it?

0:06:59 > 0:07:00Oh, my word. Wow.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Oh, wow. This is nice, isn't it?

0:07:06 > 0:07:09But look at that view, that's what captures me. I know.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12The view's amazing, isn't it? It's a good start. Oh, wow.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15This is a right girlie room this, isn't it?

0:07:15 > 0:07:16Wow. Oh, this is lovely.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19I love it! Is that the naughty chair?

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Yes. It looks like it cos it's in the middle.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Yeah. No, you'll not be in that.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25None of you will be in the naughty chair.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29We might put Dad in the naughty chair if he doesn't...! Oh, very good.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Oh, wow. THEY GASP

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Do you want to swap rooms with me? Yeah! No!

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Look at that, Karen. You're waking up in the morning and you just...

0:07:37 > 0:07:40You sit up and see that. You see the water.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Wow, look at that. Look at the big trampoline. Look!

0:07:45 > 0:07:47You will do your somersaults on those, eh?

0:07:47 > 0:07:49I could definitely see myself being here.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51What about you?

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Still need convincing? No, no, it's a nice setting.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Well, it's only day one. We'll get you warmed up.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04I think you'll have your work cut out for you, Karen.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Plonking my house right here on this very spot

0:08:07 > 0:08:09and having this view would be ideal.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Karen's hoping Gary's positive reaction is just

0:08:12 > 0:08:13a taste of what's to come.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16I think the fact that he's here now

0:08:16 > 0:08:20and he's sort of seeing a touch of what the lifestyle is like,

0:08:20 > 0:08:22I think he's maybe going to open his mind a bit more.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27But she knows everything rests on his work opportunities.

0:08:27 > 0:08:28I mean, as much as I would love this to happen,

0:08:28 > 0:08:33if he couldn't get a job that he felt happy in...

0:08:33 > 0:08:36I genuinely don't think it would happen.

0:08:36 > 0:08:37I would be devastated.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41I just hope it doesn't go that way.

0:08:41 > 0:08:42And despite his reluctance,

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Gary knows just how much Karen's dream means to her.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50She's got a lot pinning on this and I think...

0:08:51 > 0:08:54..her future will be shaped by my decision.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58If there's going to be a negative outcome,

0:08:58 > 0:09:00then Karen will feel it the most.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Back in the UK, the Davidsons live in Crewe in Cheshire.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11They've worked hard to turn their four-bedroom house

0:09:11 > 0:09:16into a place they can call home and think it's worth ?220,000.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18This is the house that...

0:09:18 > 0:09:21we're quite proud of. We've done quite a lot to it.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24We've basically adapted the house to suit our needs

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and to suit the way we live our lives.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28But when it comes to properties down under,

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Karen's going to face an uphill struggle.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Gary doesn't like Australian houses at all

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and he's not shy in telling you that.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43I am not very keen on Australian houses because of the open-plan.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46To me, it's just like a holiday home and, after a short while,

0:09:46 > 0:09:49it would drive me crazy.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Rip the roots of this house up and take it out there.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57And if he's ever going to be won over, Gary has a clear wish list.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Upstairs, downstairs, separated living,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04um...good garden.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07We would need to find a house that we were both comfortable with.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Gary, I think, more so than me.

0:10:10 > 0:10:16The budget for a property would be maximum ?300,000.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20I would be very, very surprised if we got what

0:10:20 > 0:10:22we wanted for that budget

0:10:22 > 0:10:25and that is a massive concern.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31Today, we'll give the Davidsons a taste of Adelaide's property market.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34We'll show them three options ranging from what

0:10:34 > 0:10:39they can afford to their dream home and one that's somewhere in-between.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40After seeing what's on offer,

0:10:40 > 0:10:44they'll find out just how much each house costs.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48House hunting begins in the residential suburb of Happy Valley.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50It's about 40 minutes from the centre of Adelaide

0:10:50 > 0:10:54and with plenty of schools, shopping centres and sports facilities,

0:10:54 > 0:10:57it's a popular area with active families.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Oh! This looks nice.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03This four-bedroom, two-bathroom detached property has

0:11:03 > 0:11:06plenty of outdoor space, which should suit the Davidsons,

0:11:06 > 0:11:10but will it deliver what they want at a price that's right?

0:11:10 > 0:11:11Whoa!

0:11:11 > 0:11:12Wow.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14THEY GASP

0:11:14 > 0:11:17Well, this is nice. We've got a hall. We're walking into a hall.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19It's huge!

0:11:19 > 0:11:21Wow.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24It's quite nice. Nice furniture. Yeah, it's lovely.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27It's nice and bright, isn't it? I like the big windows.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29I like the natural daylight that comes in.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33I don't like the big windows. I don't like the big windows. Why?

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I just...I don't know.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Oh, dear. It was going well, for a second.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Whoa!

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Oh, this is lovely. Big kitchen! Oh, wow. It's huge.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49See! Are you getting warmer? I wasn't expecting this.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54You wouldn't do anything to this. You would just walk in and live.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56But Gary's spotted another problem.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59I'm getting that echo that I've always said that

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I don't like about open-plan.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04And I can feel it bouncing off in there, so...

0:12:06 > 0:12:08And he's not the only one picking holes.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10What do you think of this room?

0:12:10 > 0:12:13I like it, but I'm used to big ones, not small. It's not as big as you

0:12:13 > 0:12:16thought, is it? It is a bit smaller than yours, isn't it? It's nice.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19It's the right colour, though.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Oh, yes. I would say this is a boy's room, eh?

0:12:21 > 0:12:24This is your colours, isn't it? This has got to be the boy's room.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29I could see us living here, actually.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32It's...it's just not for me. I couldn't see myself living in here.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Can you not? No.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39Surely an outdoor hot tub will win Gary over?

0:12:39 > 0:12:40It's not something I would look for.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I wouldn't even look for a swimming pool.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46No, I mean, it's not high up on the list, it's just a nice bonus to have.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50I quite like the Jacuzzi, but... Yeah. I'm never going to go in it.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53That's right, sweetheart, you just agree with your dad, eh?

0:12:53 > 0:12:57I think it's awesome. Yay! Team Mum and Team Dad!

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I think Team Dad's over there. Team Mum's over here.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04It's only the first property,

0:13:04 > 0:13:08but already the family's firmly in two different camps.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10It may not have impressed everyone,

0:13:10 > 0:13:14but could the family afford it on their ?300,000 budget?

0:13:14 > 0:13:18What do you think it's going to be? Any ideas? Really expensive.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22I think this house is nice, but its surrounding areas, I think,

0:13:22 > 0:13:23let it down.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Based on that, I think the price would be...

0:13:26 > 0:13:28I would say it would be around the 280 mark...

0:13:28 > 0:13:32sterling. I would agree with you, but maybe go a wee bit lower.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Maybe 260. Go for it.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Wow.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42So, you were on the money pretty much, weren't you? Yeah. 274.

0:13:42 > 0:13:43It doesn't surprise me.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46I wouldn't even consider the house at that price. In this area.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48In this area. I would just walk away

0:13:48 > 0:13:51and I can only compare that to what we've got back home. Yeah.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55And what we could get back home for that kind of money. Mm-hm.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58It's not the best of starts.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02The property's within budget, but Gary has really high expectations,

0:14:02 > 0:14:05and so far, he's proving difficult to please.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09Will the next house be some place he could call home?

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Property number two is in the sought-after

0:14:13 > 0:14:15coastal suburb of Hallett Cove.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17With two golf courses within driving distance

0:14:17 > 0:14:20and only a five-minute walk to the nearest beach,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23it could be the perfect spot for the Davidsons.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26THEY GASP

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Now, this has got the wow factor. Aye! This is nice.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Yeah, this is perfect.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36I can feel a smile coming! Yay!

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Dad's smiling!

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Things are looking up, Karen.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Oh, yes. Oh, this is nice. Wow. This is huge.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47This is a good-sized room. It is a good size. Isn't it?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50And it's a separate living room. It is. No, it's all separate.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52That's what I like.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56Upstairs, the house has another feature Gary might like.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59Where? Look how blue it is.

0:15:00 > 0:15:05That's lovely. No, that is...special. You'd never tire of that.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06This is nice as well. You know what I'm like.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10I like a nice clear and clean work surface.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Is Gary coming round to the idea of Aussie style living?

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Yeah, I could see myself living in this type of house,

0:15:18 > 0:15:19this whole layout.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23It suits us, it suits the way we live. And there's no echo.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Mm-hm. Is there? And it's upstairs, downstairs.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Job done. Yeah, it's looking good. Yeah, job done.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Job done(!)

0:15:33 > 0:15:35That might be wishful thinking, Karen.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37Outside doesn't disappoint either.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40It's quite a nice size garden too.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43This property certainly seems to have everything Karen

0:15:43 > 0:15:45and even Gary could want,

0:15:45 > 0:15:50but will their dream home be out of reach given their ?300,000 budget?

0:15:52 > 0:15:54I don't want to turn this over.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56I think we're going to be really disappointed.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00450. I would say the 400 mark.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Wow.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09That's ?144,000 over budget.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12I'm disappointed in it, to be fair.

0:16:12 > 0:16:17At least you can see what's there, but it would need to be a lot less.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20At that price, it's just not happening, is it?

0:16:20 > 0:16:22No, and that's a pity.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24It may be well over budget, but if Gary was to earn

0:16:24 > 0:16:28a higher salary down under, it could potentially be affordable.

0:16:30 > 0:16:31Back to the drawing board.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37The reality of Australian property has hit home hard.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40With only one more property to go, can the family find a house

0:16:40 > 0:16:45everyone's happy with, at a price that won't break the bank?

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Their final viewing is in the neighbouring

0:16:47 > 0:16:49suburb of Aberfoyle Park.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53Limited road access to the city can make for a longer commute, so this

0:16:53 > 0:16:57four-bedroom, three-bathroom house could offer better value for money.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03This is nice. Wow. This is really different, isn't it? It is.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Who said Aussie houses were all bungalows?

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Oh, let me think!

0:17:08 > 0:17:12It's a positive start, but that doesn't last long.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14I don't see the sea.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16Is there no way of pleasing this man?

0:17:16 > 0:17:18I don't see the point in having a balcony,

0:17:18 > 0:17:21because you're not exactly looking onto anything...

0:17:21 > 0:17:26apart from... It'd still be nice to sit out and have a cup of tea. No.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28I probably wouldn't use it.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29KIDS LAUGH What?!

0:17:30 > 0:17:32I'm just being honest.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36The lack of a view could be a deal breaker for Gary.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Oh, this is nice.

0:17:38 > 0:17:39Wow.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43And then the garden's out there.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46From this point on... Mm-hm.

0:17:46 > 0:17:47..I think it's fantastic.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49The kitchen area...

0:17:49 > 0:17:51personally, I would need to...

0:17:51 > 0:17:53I would change that.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55That could be sorted.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59Oh, this must be the master bedroom. Well, this is a good size.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02Isn't it? Yeah.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05Walk-in wardrobe, nice en suite, nice and bright and roomy.

0:18:05 > 0:18:10I think it's a bit on the small side for a master bedroom. Do you? Yeah.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14I don't think so. Small... I think it feels it because of the shape of it.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20Karen's selling hard, but Gary's not completely sold on this house...yet.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Oh, wow. Oh, wow. This is nice.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29The garden's a nice size, isn't it? Yeah.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Low-maintenance. That's what we like. That looks good.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36This spacious property has a double garage down below

0:18:36 > 0:18:39and another feature that could come in handy.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41This must be the garage. Wow.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Oh, my word. Oh, I was not expecting this at all.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Oh, this is like a self-contained... Yeah, it's like a granny flat!

0:18:53 > 0:18:56What we'd call a granny flat.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59This house has the space the family have been looking for.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02But is it within reach of their ?300,000 budget?

0:19:04 > 0:19:07This house is just full of surprises, isn't it? Mm-hm.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09It doesn't have the view like the second house,

0:19:09 > 0:19:11but it's got all the additional space.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15I think I'm going to go for 325. 285 to 300.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23That's around ?50,000 over the family's budget.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25I wouldn't pay that for it.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28I wouldn't pay it, because I wouldn't make full use of the space.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30It's not been the best start to Karen's hopes

0:19:30 > 0:19:32of a new life in Australia.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35The first property was within budget,

0:19:35 > 0:19:39but its open-plan style didn't go down well with Gary.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Property number two had the wow factor,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43but had a price tag to match.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47And while the final property offered the space the family wanted,

0:19:47 > 0:19:50it wasn't enough for them to stretch their budget.

0:19:51 > 0:19:56So, based on property, will the family chose Australia or the UK?

0:19:57 > 0:20:01Based on the houses we've seen today, we're going to vote for...

0:20:10 > 0:20:12Australia! UK!

0:20:14 > 0:20:16Why did you go for the UK?

0:20:17 > 0:20:19Because I just, like...I don't think I can see myself

0:20:19 > 0:20:22living in Australian houses.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24To be fair...

0:20:24 > 0:20:27I was pleasantly surprised, but,

0:20:27 > 0:20:30compared to what we've seen and what I know...

0:20:30 > 0:20:31UK.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Albeit, the upstairs living was slightly different to what

0:20:34 > 0:20:37we're used to, but, I think, given time, we could adjust.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Team Dad! Team Mum!

0:20:39 > 0:20:41THEY LAUGH

0:20:46 > 0:20:51One day in, and the family divide is as clear-cut as it was back home.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Gary's happy with life in the UK,

0:20:53 > 0:20:57so if he's ever to make the move to Australia, Karen knows

0:20:57 > 0:21:01finding him the right job with the right salary is crucial.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05If the opportunities don't exist, her dream could be over for good.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11Back in the UK, Gary works in the rail industry.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15It's a secure job with a successful company and he can't imagine

0:21:15 > 0:21:18giving up the career he's worked so hard for

0:21:18 > 0:21:20to start again in Australia.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24I am responsible for an office of multi-disciplined engineers

0:21:24 > 0:21:28that do railway design. I work with a great bunch of people.

0:21:28 > 0:21:33I've got great bosses. For me to leave what I have currently...

0:21:35 > 0:21:38..would be a massive wrench, seriously.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Karen currently works part-time, but if the family were to make

0:21:41 > 0:21:45the move, she would concentrate on getting the children settled.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Gary, initially at least, would be the sole breadwinner

0:21:48 > 0:21:52and he's clear about what he'd need to give up his job at home.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56He currently earns around ?70,000 a year in the UK.

0:21:56 > 0:22:03Salary-wise, for it to work it would need to be in the region of 130.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06At a minimum of $130,000 Australian dollars.

0:22:07 > 0:22:08If I couldn't achieve that,

0:22:08 > 0:22:12then there is absolutely no point in even...

0:22:13 > 0:22:15..considering the move.

0:22:18 > 0:22:19Welcome to my world!

0:22:21 > 0:22:25Karen's dream life hangs on Gary's job prospects,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27a fact not entirely lost on him.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32I think Karen's pretty nervous about today and how it goes for me.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36She's just a bit concerned that I won't embrace this.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Being out here, I've got to be open-minded

0:22:38 > 0:22:42and it's not just about me, it's about the family as well.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45With Adelaide's railways currently undergoing a major overhaul,

0:22:45 > 0:22:49the timing could be perfect for job opportunities.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Gary's met by Luigi Rossi,

0:22:51 > 0:22:55executive director of the local rail rejuvenation project.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57We're here at the Adelaide station

0:22:57 > 0:22:59where all the suburban trains come in to. Yeah.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02All right, and this is an area where we've been working for

0:23:02 > 0:23:05some months now, so if you'd like to come through here.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10While Gary explores his work options, Karen takes Blair

0:23:10 > 0:23:12and the other half of Team Dad off to explore

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Adelaide's sports facilities.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17Hello, I'm Jodie. Hi. You must be Skye. Yeah.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Could this be just what's needed to bring Skye around?

0:23:25 > 0:23:28I've done gymnastics for four or five years.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31It would be important for me to find

0:23:31 > 0:23:35a gymnastics place in Australia because I really like gymnastics.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40I would only be happy if I knew that Blair and Skye were happy

0:23:40 > 0:23:43and, for them to be happy, they need to be active,

0:23:43 > 0:23:46they need to be doing the sports that they enjoy.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Before we came to the gymnastics today, Skye was really nervous

0:23:49 > 0:23:52because it's such a big part of her life back home,

0:23:52 > 0:23:57but now that she's here, I can see her. She seems quite happy.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59But Skye's still undecided.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02It has made me feel better, but I think I'm sure,

0:24:02 > 0:24:05but I'm not quite "sure" sure.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Not quite there yet, Karen.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Meanwhile, Gary's getting down to business.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14So, for my skill sets, Luigi,

0:24:14 > 0:24:17what would the opportunities be for myself?

0:24:17 > 0:24:22Right now, the opportunity here is probably limited,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26right at this very moment. The majority of the major projects are under way.

0:24:26 > 0:24:31Um, some large projects are starting to evolve, but we're really

0:24:31 > 0:24:34waiting on the next round of federal investment,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36which should be announced in May.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40No rail industry vacancies could mean it's all over

0:24:40 > 0:24:43for Karen's plans to move down under.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46Blissfully unaware of the set back, Karen and the children

0:24:46 > 0:24:49have moved on to a game of cricket.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Welcome to the Goodwood Cricket Club. Thank you.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55And it's a chance for Karen to ask other mums advice on how to

0:24:55 > 0:24:57get the family settled in.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59A key thing for me is to get the kids settled

0:24:59 > 0:25:03and doing something that they want to do.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Get them to make friends, then you'll make friends through them.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08It's a good way... It's huge, yeah.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10You'll get them settling in really quickly

0:25:10 > 0:25:13by doing things like that, yeah. From what I've seen so far,

0:25:13 > 0:25:15there seems to be an awful lot of sport over here.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Cricket or footie! We've not so much in England!

0:25:19 > 0:25:21Blair's been bowled over by the day.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27It's a warm country, so you can play cricket more outside,

0:25:27 > 0:25:29instead of being stuck inside.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36With the lack of opportunities in the rail industry,

0:25:36 > 0:25:40Gary meets up with recruitment consultant Shannon Bottrell

0:25:40 > 0:25:43to find out if his experience could land him a job in another field.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46Hi there, I'm Gary. I'm Shannon, how you going? How are you?

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Good, thank you. I've been looking at your CV.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53Obviously, you've very strong rail experience.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56What areas would you focus your, um, I guess,

0:25:56 > 0:26:00opportunities in from a role perspective?

0:26:00 > 0:26:02Mainly client relationships and project delivery.

0:26:02 > 0:26:06That would be transferable even outside of that rail discipline

0:26:06 > 0:26:08into similar infrastructure projects.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11And what about that all-important question of money?

0:26:11 > 0:26:14What sort of salary range would I be looking at for someone

0:26:14 > 0:26:17with my skill sets? Depending on the role you were able to secure,

0:26:17 > 0:26:22an absolute minimum of sort of the $120,000 to $130,000 mark,

0:26:22 > 0:26:24but, with your skill set, the scope is really quite broad

0:26:24 > 0:26:29and you could expect opportunities up to 160 to 180.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33Gary's reluctance to consider a move to Oz has always been

0:26:33 > 0:26:36based on the fear of giving up his career at home.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40So, has what he's heard today been enough to change his mind?

0:26:42 > 0:26:44Based on today's experience

0:26:44 > 0:26:49and discussions about potential opportunities in Australia,

0:26:49 > 0:26:51I would give my vote to...

0:26:56 > 0:26:57..undecided.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02It doesn't sway me one way or the other, but it does let me know

0:27:02 > 0:27:08that there is potential employment if, as a family, we decided that...

0:27:08 > 0:27:10life in Australia would be better for us.

0:27:16 > 0:27:21Although not entirely won over by work prospects down under,

0:27:21 > 0:27:23an undecided vote from Gary could potentially be

0:27:23 > 0:27:26a step in the right direction for Karen.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30A major part of her dream has always been about spending more time

0:27:30 > 0:27:34together as a family, so could a day out on the local golf course

0:27:34 > 0:27:39help Gary and Skye see the possibilities of life in Australia?

0:27:40 > 0:27:44The sun's out and there's a new name for Team Dad and Team Mum.

0:27:44 > 0:27:49Team Skye versus Team Blair. We'll win!

0:27:52 > 0:27:56The main drive for Australia has been the overall lifestyle,

0:27:56 > 0:27:58being outdoors more.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01It's extremely sport-based and just opportunities, I think,

0:28:01 > 0:28:04for the kids, you know, as they grow a bit older.

0:28:07 > 0:28:08Woo!

0:28:11 > 0:28:13I think Blair and Skye have really enjoyed it,

0:28:13 > 0:28:16being out in the open air and the sunshine,

0:28:16 > 0:28:18it's shown us the lifestyle that we could have.

0:28:20 > 0:28:22The weather, I mean, it's a lot better,

0:28:22 > 0:28:27and the sports, I like my sports, so you be outside a lot more.

0:28:28 > 0:28:32Personally, I would defy anyone not to vote Australia

0:28:32 > 0:28:35on the lifestyle side of things.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39And Gary thinks his golfing partner could agree.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43With Team Dad and Team Mum, Skye, I think, to be honest, is...

0:28:43 > 0:28:45could be turning.

0:28:45 > 0:28:46Nice shot! That was good!

0:28:46 > 0:28:49See? Your dad's a good teacher!

0:28:49 > 0:28:52I feel, like, a bit better that I want to move,

0:28:52 > 0:28:55but I'm still not used to it cos I've always been in England

0:28:55 > 0:28:57and never lived somewhere else.

0:28:58 > 0:29:02And Karen thinks the Aussie sunshine could be working in her favour.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05I think they're getting there, I think they've seen

0:29:05 > 0:29:08what life could be like and I think they're starting to appreciate why

0:29:08 > 0:29:11it was a dream for me and why I could see us in Australia.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14She's confident the day's been a breakthrough with Gary.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19Whoa!

0:29:20 > 0:29:21Did you see it? Did you see it?

0:29:23 > 0:29:25I think the nut's been cracked.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28It's maybe not quite open yet, but I think it's been cracked.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31I'm optimistic and I'm extremely hopeful.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35I would say I'm starting to come around.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38This has always been Karen's dream, but I'm certainly over

0:29:38 > 0:29:42the last couple of days starting to see what she's been chasing.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45The day has given the Davidsons a taste of what

0:29:45 > 0:29:48they could experience together on a regular basis.

0:29:48 > 0:29:53So, based on lifestyle, will a vote see a clean sweep for Australia?

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Based on what we've experienced today with the Australian lifestyle

0:29:57 > 0:29:59and this lovely weather,

0:29:59 > 0:30:01our vote will go to...

0:30:08 > 0:30:09Australia! Undecided!

0:30:11 > 0:30:12Oh, my goodness!

0:30:12 > 0:30:15Why have you gone for undecided, Skye?

0:30:15 > 0:30:17Skye, seriously though, darling, in this weather?

0:30:17 > 0:30:20I like the sun, but, the other half is, I'm going to miss,

0:30:20 > 0:30:23I know this is stupid, but I'm going to miss the other weather.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32A taste of the Aussie lifestyle has won almost everyone over.

0:30:32 > 0:30:36Karen's dream could, at last, be within touching distance.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38For the move to be a viable one though,

0:30:38 > 0:30:42getting the family finances to add up will be key and a large

0:30:42 > 0:30:46part of that will be decided by the value of their UK property.

0:30:46 > 0:30:51The Davidsons believe it could fetch around ?220,000,

0:30:51 > 0:30:54but would two local estate agents agree?

0:30:54 > 0:30:58This is a nice room. It's got plenty of space.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02I like the patriotic rug. Yay! They got the rug in.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09Yes, a nice kitchen.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Plenty of open space. The utility room's separate, which is good.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18He's not very enthusiastic, is he? A bit like myself, sometimes! Yeah.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20You and him would get on well!

0:31:21 > 0:31:23Well, a very nice conservatory.

0:31:23 > 0:31:24A very nice room indeed.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31This is a nice room as well.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33Storage space is good.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36The bedroom looks a lot smaller.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38Oh, there's your room, Skye.

0:31:38 > 0:31:39Well, it's a good size,

0:31:39 > 0:31:42and it's got a good built-in double wardrobe as well.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44Nice room. Nicely decorated.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Yes, it's a good-sized fourth bedroom.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Somebody likes their red, white and blue. That's very nice. Yeah!

0:31:49 > 0:31:51Well, it's a very nice four-bedroom, detached house.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53I think if it went to the market,

0:31:53 > 0:31:57I'd be recommending a guide price of around ?199,000.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00GARY SIGHS No chance!

0:32:00 > 0:32:02And I think if it needed an early sale,

0:32:02 > 0:32:04I'd expect a sale around ?190,000.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06If I was to put this house on the market now,

0:32:06 > 0:32:09I'd probably put it on at ?215,000. That's more like it.

0:32:09 > 0:32:13I'd expect them to get offers in the region of 200. For a quick sale,

0:32:13 > 0:32:17we'd probably recommend 195 to 200,000.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20The figures are disappointing.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24But we kind of thought that, cos of just the way the market is,

0:32:24 > 0:32:26and obviously, we've done a lot to it,

0:32:26 > 0:32:28but you don't always get your money back, do you?

0:32:28 > 0:32:29Hmm.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31The second evaluation, regardless,

0:32:31 > 0:32:35is there or thereabouts to what we thought. Mm-hm.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39Um. Yeah. But the first one was just way too low.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43It puts a big question mark... Hmm.

0:32:43 > 0:32:44Absolutely.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49To help the couple get to grips with the financial side

0:32:49 > 0:32:51of life down under, we've prepared

0:32:51 > 0:32:55a comparison of the family's cost of living in the UK and Australia.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58First up is the weekly food shop.

0:33:01 > 0:33:02OK.

0:33:04 > 0:33:06Oh, my goodness. Whoa.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07Chicken...

0:33:07 > 0:33:08Chicken's extortionate - look!

0:33:10 > 0:33:13Grapes are a lot cheaper. That's good. We like grapes.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Just live on grapes.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18Yeah, but fish is almost...double the price,

0:33:18 > 0:33:21and so there's one or two big numbers.

0:33:23 > 0:33:24So, how does it add up?

0:33:26 > 0:33:31So, we would be ?89.97 worse off. Yes, ?90 a week.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35We'll move on from there. That's not good! We'll see what else...

0:33:35 > 0:33:37Not a great start.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40What about the bigger outgoings, such as an Aussie mortgage?

0:33:40 > 0:33:42That was the last property that we saw,

0:33:42 > 0:33:44which was the middle one value-wise, wasn't it?

0:33:44 > 0:33:47So, it would be more than what we're paying back home.

0:33:47 > 0:33:51The couple's mortgage would be ?560 per month more down under,

0:33:51 > 0:33:56but could Gary's potential earnings of $180,000,

0:33:56 > 0:34:00that's around ?110,000, help turn things around.

0:34:00 > 0:34:01Well, the monthly figure...

0:34:03 > 0:34:06..is indicating we would be better off by

0:34:06 > 0:34:092,416...

0:34:09 > 0:34:12and 8 pence.

0:34:12 > 0:34:14So, yes, it's looking like we're going to be

0:34:14 > 0:34:20nearly ?29,000 per annum better off...

0:34:20 > 0:34:22which is a lot of money.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25Being able to have that sort of spare cash every month would be great,

0:34:25 > 0:34:29I mean, it would allow us to sort of set savings plans up

0:34:29 > 0:34:32for the kids for maybe university fees and things.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34It would also maybe allow us

0:34:34 > 0:34:38to have a bit more frequent flights back to the UK to see family.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42I'm pleased and optimistic that a move could happen.

0:34:43 > 0:34:44Smiley face!

0:34:45 > 0:34:48Could Karen's dream life be another step closer?

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Based on the results of today's reality check, our vote goes to...

0:35:00 > 0:35:01Australia.

0:35:07 > 0:35:08Australia.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11YES!

0:35:14 > 0:35:16It's looking certainly more promising

0:35:16 > 0:35:20and positive than what I first imagined.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24The figures are too good, really, to ignore.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28But, yeah, you just never know with Gary.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30He likes to keep me in suspense. Don't you?

0:35:35 > 0:35:39Gary's two votes for Australia could mean Karen is in with a real

0:35:39 > 0:35:43chance of persuading him to take the family down under for good.

0:35:43 > 0:35:47Australia's been everything she'd imagined, but will a reminder

0:35:47 > 0:35:52of what she stands to leave in the UK see her resolve waver?

0:35:52 > 0:35:56Right, guys, this is the last part of the puzzle.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58We need to watch the friends and family messages

0:35:58 > 0:36:02and see what your grans and papas and your aunts have to say.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06Do you want to watch it with us? Yeah? (Yeah.)

0:36:06 > 0:36:06You sure?

0:36:09 > 0:36:11Hi, folks, how you doing?

0:36:11 > 0:36:12I hope you've had a good week out there

0:36:12 > 0:36:15and the sun's been shining for you.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17ALL: Hi!

0:36:17 > 0:36:19Hi, Gary, Karen, Blair and Skye.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21Hello! Hello, Skye and Blair!

0:36:22 > 0:36:24They're a lovely family.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27They're close, aren't they? Yeah, they do a lot together.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31Gary is a fantastic big brother.

0:36:31 > 0:36:35Karen is a wonderful mum and...

0:36:35 > 0:36:38the most important thing for me is she makes my son very happy.

0:36:38 > 0:36:42Blair's a very endearing wee lad. He's just terrific with everybody.

0:36:43 > 0:36:46We went round for coffee one afternoon

0:36:46 > 0:36:48and Karen decided to tell us then

0:36:48 > 0:36:51what they were thinking of doing, which was a bit of a shock, really.

0:36:51 > 0:36:54Erm, cos she seems...it was as though she's always going to be here

0:36:54 > 0:36:57with us. You know. We're the fab five, you know?

0:36:58 > 0:37:03I think Skye's going to be the more homesick out of the two.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06She always gets a bit weepy when we've been to visit

0:37:06 > 0:37:08and we then say goodbye.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11I think she'll miss the cousins and the family the most.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13It's the other side of the world we're talking about.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16We're not talking about just down the road.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I'm going to find it very, very tough if they do...

0:37:19 > 0:37:23eh, go over there. It's only ten hours flying.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25I'll miss the big get-togethers.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28We always have the big get-togethers at Easter, Christmas,

0:37:28 > 0:37:32birthdays, you know, it's all the big family dos.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34We'd prefer that they didn't go,

0:37:34 > 0:37:39but perhaps there's an element of selfishness creeping in there.

0:37:39 > 0:37:40Gran...

0:37:42 > 0:37:44(She looks upset, doesn't she?)

0:37:44 > 0:37:47I will miss you, but...

0:37:47 > 0:37:50if it's going to be a better life for you, just go for it.

0:37:52 > 0:37:56We're going to miss you. I can't even express...

0:37:56 > 0:37:59just how much we'll miss you.

0:37:59 > 0:38:00And we just love you so much.

0:38:08 > 0:38:10A few watery eyes, my own included.

0:38:12 > 0:38:17Family, obviously, have been there all my life. Um...

0:38:17 > 0:38:20And, yeah, they're very important.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23You know, it kind of reminds you a bit more...

0:38:23 > 0:38:25erm...

0:38:25 > 0:38:28just how much is involved by moving across to Australia.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31They are being left with a void, you know, at the other side,

0:38:31 > 0:38:33which is something that I've, personally,

0:38:33 > 0:38:35probably not thought about.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39For most of her life,

0:38:39 > 0:38:43Karen has dreamt of a better future on the other side of the world.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47The past week has shown her everything Australia could offer,

0:38:47 > 0:38:49but only if she's managed to get her husband

0:38:49 > 0:38:52and daughter to buy into her dream.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55It's been an eventful week for the Davidsons.

0:38:55 > 0:38:59Mixed reaction on the property front may have left the family divided...

0:38:59 > 0:39:02Team Dad's over there. Team Mum's over here.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04..but encouraging job prospects for Gary

0:39:04 > 0:39:07soon saw Karen's dream back on track.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11Things are looking certainly more promising

0:39:11 > 0:39:15and positive than what I had first imagined.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17I'm pleased.

0:39:17 > 0:39:19Smiley face!

0:39:19 > 0:39:21Blair and Skye were reassured they could

0:39:21 > 0:39:23continue their activities down under.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25It has made me feel better.

0:39:25 > 0:39:30You can play more outside instead of being stuck inside.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33And a taste of the Aussie outdoor lifestyle was a winner with

0:39:33 > 0:39:37the whole family. Being out in the open air and the sunshine...

0:39:37 > 0:39:39Well, almost. I know this is stupid,

0:39:39 > 0:39:41but I'm going to miss the other weather.

0:39:41 > 0:39:43So, as the family's final decision approaches,

0:39:43 > 0:39:48has Karen convinced Team Dad to start a new life down under?

0:39:51 > 0:39:53It's a cockle, innit? Oh, wow! A yabby.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58'This week has been absolutely fantastic.'

0:39:58 > 0:40:01I've seen how happy and relaxed the children are,

0:40:01 > 0:40:02and Gary too for that matter.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06Aye, pick one out. I'm frightened in case they nip you.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08'I knew Australia would be good,'

0:40:08 > 0:40:11but I didn't know it would be that good to change my dad's mind.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15I know, cos there's a lot of things going on in Dad's mind.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19'I may have thought it was a leap into the unknown.'

0:40:19 > 0:40:20I wouldn't say I'm terrified now.

0:40:20 > 0:40:22What is up? He's just in there.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24'It's still a massive move because'

0:40:24 > 0:40:25you're settled back home,

0:40:25 > 0:40:28it's what you know, it's where your family are.

0:40:28 > 0:40:32Skye, look. Look at its mouth. It's horrible. Just drop them back!

0:40:32 > 0:40:34'He's sort of seen it through my eyes'

0:40:34 > 0:40:36and we're hopefully on the same page.

0:40:36 > 0:40:39Karen thinks Gary may be wavering,

0:40:39 > 0:40:41but what about the other half of Team Dad?

0:40:42 > 0:40:46We might still have sort of a split camp with Blair and Skye.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49I've actually quite enjoyed my week in Australia.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52I thought I would hate it, but I haven't. I've enjoyed it.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54Ugh!

0:40:54 > 0:40:58'She can see the positives in Australia, but, at the same time,'

0:40:58 > 0:41:00she's really comfortable in the UK.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03So, I really don't know how she's going to vote.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05As it comes to the final turn of the cards,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08Karen is cautiously optimistic.

0:41:09 > 0:41:10It was always a dream before.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13I can reach out and almost touch it, I think, now.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18She's invested everything in pursuing this dream,

0:41:18 > 0:41:22but has Karen done enough to win the whole family round?

0:41:24 > 0:41:29We've had a fantastic week here in Australia, we've seen housing,

0:41:29 > 0:41:33we've looked at lifestyle, we've looked at jobs.

0:41:33 > 0:41:37Based on our week in Australia, we're going to vote for...

0:41:45 > 0:41:46Australia! Undecided.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49SKYE GASPS Oh, seriously?!

0:41:51 > 0:41:53You're not getting an ice cream.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55I've seen an awful lot this week.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58I would say I'm...

0:41:58 > 0:42:00a lot further away from where I was originally,

0:42:00 > 0:42:03which was totally 100% UK.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05I'm a bit...

0:42:05 > 0:42:08disappointed, I think, that you voted undecided,

0:42:08 > 0:42:09considering everything we've seen.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12But there's still an awful lot to consider.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15When we go home, we need to sit down and seriously look...

0:42:17 > 0:42:19..and explore all the options.

0:42:19 > 0:42:22And if we decide to go for it, then we need to go for it.

0:42:22 > 0:42:26An undecided is definitely better than UK,

0:42:26 > 0:42:29so it's a step in the right direction.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31I have been surprised that I've changed my mind

0:42:31 > 0:42:34and I thought I wouldn't have, but I have!

0:42:34 > 0:42:37I really enjoyed this week, like I thought I would,

0:42:37 > 0:42:39so I picked Australia.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42Now that I've sort of been able to experience it myself

0:42:42 > 0:42:45and seen exactly what it has to offer,

0:42:45 > 0:42:46it's a no-brainer for me.

0:42:55 > 0:42:59It may not have been the complete breakthrough Karen was hoping for,

0:42:59 > 0:43:03but one more vote for Australia and an undecided for Gary

0:43:03 > 0:43:05means her dream is still alive.

0:43:05 > 0:43:10Wherever they end up, in the UK or on the other side of the world,

0:43:10 > 0:43:13we wish the Davidsons a very happy future together.
