0:00:02 > 0:00:05Raising your first child can be hard at the best of times

0:00:05 > 0:00:09but it is even tougher when one parent is hardly ever at home.

0:00:09 > 0:00:14So how far would you go to get the time together you were dreaming of?

0:00:14 > 0:00:15For one young family,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19it could mean a move to the other side of the world.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Long hours toiling on a farm

0:00:21 > 0:00:24means dad Josh hardly has any time with son Cai.

0:00:24 > 0:00:25And mum Sian has had enough.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27He will go and stand at the front door

0:00:27 > 0:00:29and he will shout for his daddy.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31That really upsets me.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Desperate to bring her family together,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35she thinks New Zealand could be the answer.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38We need to be working less and living more.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40But when a trial week reveals some home truths

0:00:40 > 0:00:43about starting again on the other side of the world...

0:00:43 > 0:00:45A bit of a shoe box, isn't it?

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Our garden is nothing special at all

0:00:47 > 0:00:48but we have got five times the size of this.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52We can't move to the other side of the world and buy a mansion.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Will Sian ever be able to persuade Josh to give her

0:00:54 > 0:00:55the life she dreams of?

0:00:55 > 0:00:57One half saying, we just stay in Wales

0:00:57 > 0:00:59and the other half saying, flee the nest.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03I want to move, but I don't think you're going to let me.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Just over 1,200 miles southeast of Australia,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34New Zealand is made up of two main islands.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Boasting mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and beaches,

0:01:37 > 0:01:41it's been a magnet for British immigrants ever since the 1800s.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Back then, the journey took over 100 days, but now it is a lot faster

0:01:45 > 0:01:49for the 9,000 families who make the move each year

0:01:49 > 0:01:51looking for a more relaxed pace of life.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56Sian James is desperate for more time together with partner Josh

0:01:56 > 0:01:58and the couple's young son, Cai.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01And even though she has never been before

0:02:01 > 0:02:04she believes New Zealand could be the answer.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08But will the country live up to Sian's expectations?

0:02:08 > 0:02:10And will she be able to persuade Josh

0:02:10 > 0:02:14to leave behind everything they have in the UK?

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Ahead is a week that will see them decide where their future lies

0:02:18 > 0:02:20once and for all.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23After making their way from Wales to London

0:02:23 > 0:02:27the family fly 12,000 miles to Auckland.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29It is the first time they have been to New Zealand

0:02:29 > 0:02:32and after 26 and a half hours in the air

0:02:32 > 0:02:34the journey has taken them by surprise.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38I don't think it is as easy as I thought to actually get here.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42So, it's... Yeah, it has hit home that it is really far.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Travelling with a one-year-old child

0:02:44 > 0:02:46didn't make the flight go any quicker.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48It has been quite testing.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Er, but...you know, I expect that from a youngster,

0:02:52 > 0:02:53travelling all that distance.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56- He did fall asleep every takeoff and every landing.- Yeah.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Yeah, he did make a few friends on the trip, didn't he?

0:02:59 > 0:03:01So, after the long trip to get here

0:03:01 > 0:03:05how does Sian feel to finally be in New Zealand?

0:03:05 > 0:03:06It doesn't feel real at the moment.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10I think I need to, you know, see it and live as if we were living here.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13It will be her one shot at persuading Josh to move.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Now we will be able to answer the questions that we have been asking.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So hopefully now, they will be the right answers.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21As they set out to explore Auckland

0:03:21 > 0:03:25there is no doubt the next week will make or break Sian's Kiwi dream.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Back in the UK, Josh Powell and Sian James live

0:03:34 > 0:03:38with their one-year-old son, Cai, in the Welsh village of Pen-y-Groes.

0:03:38 > 0:03:39It is a scenic setting

0:03:39 > 0:03:43but Josh's job on his dad's farm is putting the family under pressure.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Waking up with the cockerels every morning and working

0:03:46 > 0:03:47until the cows go home at night means

0:03:47 > 0:03:50he has precious little time with his partner and son.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52When I wake up, Josh is gone.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56I get Cai ready, I drop him off and I go to work.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59And then I pick him up and it's just putting him to bed

0:03:59 > 0:04:01and just waiting for you to come home.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06And then Josh is tired because he has been working 13, 14 hours

0:04:06 > 0:04:10so we have food together and then you fall asleep.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12- SHE LAUGHS - Yeah!

0:04:12 > 0:04:15With farming a seven-days-a-week occupation,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17there is no respite come the weekend, either,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19meaning Josh spends Saturdays

0:04:19 > 0:04:22and Sundays in the field rather than at home.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25It is tough, but, you know, the only thing that keeps me going is knowing

0:04:25 > 0:04:29that I am keeping a roof over his head and putting food on the table.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30Also working full-time

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Sian knows Josh isn't just making hay while the sun shines,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36but worries about Cai seeing so little of his dad.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40He'll go and stand at the front door and he'll shout for his daddy.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42That really upsets me

0:04:42 > 0:04:46because I can see that Cai is wanting that relationship with his dad

0:04:46 > 0:04:49but the hours of his work doesn't allow for that.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50All the hours spent apart

0:04:50 > 0:04:54means Josh is missing out on little moments as Cai grows up.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58He learns a lot of animal noises and then he will do one to me

0:04:58 > 0:05:01out of the blue and I realise that he has been doing it for a while

0:05:01 > 0:05:04but just because I haven't been around, I haven't seen.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07I can see the disappointment on Josh's face then.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10You know, it's just... it's just not nice.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14And it's not just Cai that is being affected.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15We are only young

0:05:15 > 0:05:18but we don't have time together, really, just you and me,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20- going out somewhere, together.- No.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Desperate for a normal family life and despite never having been,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Sian believes the answer could lie in New Zealand.

0:05:27 > 0:05:33Although I love Wales, I don't feel that it's where I want to settle.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36And that work/life balance is vitally important

0:05:36 > 0:05:39and they seem to have it sussed, out there.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41And I just want that.

0:05:41 > 0:05:42But Josh isn't convinced.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Though he'd love more time at home too

0:05:44 > 0:05:47he believes Sian's head's firmly in the clouds.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49She needs to realise it's not going to be just fun and games.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52You have to work as well, out in New Zealand, to earn a living.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56You can have all the time in the world, but if you can't sustain your

0:05:56 > 0:06:00house and your family, then, you know, you're on a downward spiral.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02For him, moving would mean leaving the village

0:06:02 > 0:06:04he's always called home.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05I've always been in Pen-y-Groes.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08I've got a lot of friends in the area and family.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11We are all a close-knit community around here.

0:06:11 > 0:06:12And having to break the bond

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Cai's already building with his grandparents.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17My mother looks after him two days a week.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- I think she's...- She loves him.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- She loves the time, just her and Cai.- They love each other.

0:06:21 > 0:06:27So I think it'll be a lot... It will be a big hole to need to fill in.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29While Sian's prepared to sacrifice the relationship

0:06:29 > 0:06:32she has for the sake of her young family's future,

0:06:32 > 0:06:36she fears leaving loved ones could prove too much for Josh.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38I do feel guilty.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42And I know for sure, Josh's mother is going to be heartbroken

0:06:42 > 0:06:45to be away from Cai, because...

0:06:45 > 0:06:47they've got a fantastic bond. They love each other.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51So, that is going to be one of the hardest things.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54But fed up feeling like a single parent

0:06:54 > 0:06:57she knows action is needed if her family are to be together.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02I don't think while staying where we are, or even in Wales...

0:07:02 > 0:07:06I don't think it's going to change because Josh is always going to want

0:07:06 > 0:07:10to help his father because, you know, that's completely natural.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13The week ahead will see the couple decide once and for all

0:07:13 > 0:07:15where their future lies.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19I don't think he sees that moving to the other side of the world is...

0:07:21 > 0:07:24..you know, is something he needs to do to get that, whereas, I do.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26SHE LAUGHS

0:07:26 > 0:07:28- Is grass always greener over the other side?- Yeah.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30That's the big question.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45To see if New Zealand can offer the family the time together

0:07:45 > 0:07:48she wants, Sian, Josh and Cai are visiting Auckland,

0:07:48 > 0:07:50the country's largest city.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53Their temporary base is an apartment in Swanson,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57a village just over 30 minutes' drive from the city's centre.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01Close to amenities but removed from hustle and bustle, the area should

0:08:01 > 0:08:06be a home from home and from the outside, Sian likes what she sees.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09I really like it. It is really pretty.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Inside, her enthusiasm continues.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- It's nice and spacious, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16Oh, wow. That is gorgeous.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18But what does Josh have to say?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Bit small, I'd say.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24But, er, no, it is a practical space.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Mmm, a man of few words.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Could you see us here?

0:08:29 > 0:08:30- Here?- With that view.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35- Er, no, not in this house. - SHE LAUGHS

0:08:35 > 0:08:37OK, I'll work on you, then.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40With a bed for Cai sorted, he gets some sleep, while mum

0:08:40 > 0:08:44and dad check out the garden and Josh finally speaks his mind.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46What do you think?

0:08:46 > 0:08:48It's all right, isn't it?

0:08:48 > 0:08:50It's more of an old people's home.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Low maintenance type thing, isn't it?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55I quite like low maintenance.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57- Low maintenance it is. - SHE LAUGHS

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Ouch, that's low, Josh!

0:08:59 > 0:09:00As the couple settle in

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Sian's already feeling anxious about what lies ahead.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06This week is the make-or-break week, you know?

0:09:06 > 0:09:12We either fall in love with it and do it or it will never be a reality.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Convincing Josh to up sticks and start again won't be easy.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Mainly because of the work and the money.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I don't see the point of moving all the way across the world

0:09:21 > 0:09:25if you're not going to be better off than what you are back in the UK.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Sian knows she may have to fight for her dream

0:09:28 > 0:09:31but hopes the coming week will give Josh the answers he wants.

0:09:31 > 0:09:36I genuinely believe that if there was a job with less hours

0:09:36 > 0:09:39and decent pay that Josh would be sold

0:09:39 > 0:09:44because I think he would love living here if we could afford to do so.

0:09:44 > 0:09:45She may be right, but for now,

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Josh remains cautious about where his family's future lies.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54Unless...pretty much every box is ticked with me

0:09:54 > 0:09:56I will be choosing the UK.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Back in Wales, the family's first home is a two-bedroom house

0:10:06 > 0:10:09they believe is worth around £80,000.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14It is an ex-council house. Small, little garden, nothing special.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Really, erm, decorated it from what it was.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- We've stripped all the wallpaper, haven't we?- Yeah.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24And new floors throughout, so we have worked hard to get it to where it is.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Despite their best efforts, it's not quite perfect.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32I quite like the downstairs, but I wish we had another living room.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35While Sian's hoping for more from a house in New Zealand...

0:10:35 > 0:10:40I'd like to have three-bedroom-or-more property

0:10:40 > 0:10:43and I'd like it to be modern.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45I'm not so bothered about the lounge

0:10:45 > 0:10:49but the kitchen-diner is the most important part for me.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Josh's needs are simpler.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Large garden, that is my main priority, is the garden.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Obviously then a nice kitchen for Sian.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Josh and Sian have between £125,000 and £130,000

0:11:05 > 0:11:08to buy a house in New Zealand.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11And with Auckland ranked amongst the world's most expensive cities,

0:11:11 > 0:11:13every penny will count.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17To see what they can afford, we'll show them three properties.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Two based on budget, and a third based on their ideal home.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Only after they have seen each one will they find out its cost.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29With Cai cared for by a childminder,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31the search starts in Henderson,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35a large suburb just eight miles from the city centre.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37With shops, schools and excellent transport links,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40the area has everything the young family could need.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43But will the house come up to scratch?

0:11:43 > 0:11:47- It is a bit cramped, isn't it?- Yes, built up a bit.- A bit squished in.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50The exterior may not meet Sian's expectations

0:11:50 > 0:11:53but things look more promising inside.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Quite spacious, going in, isn't it?

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- House is a nice design. - Yeah, lovely inside.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02Initially, anyway. Closer inspection of the kitchen raises doubts.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- Nice, basic kitchen, but it's a bit on the small side.- Yeah.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- It's nice units and everything.- Yeah.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Just a shame that it's a bit small.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12And a glimpse out of the window leaves the couple both uninspired.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15No, it's... not the best view in the world.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19I will be here, spending most of my time cleaning up after you and Cai!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- Yeah.- And that's what I'll be looking at.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25Unfortunately, things don't look better in the garden.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- Ah, it is a bit small, isn't it? - Yeah, really small.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32It is nice not having all houses built behind us.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34But I don't like it.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35Sian's disappointed

0:12:35 > 0:12:38and it's clearly not the space Josh would want either.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Our garden's nothing special at all,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43but five times the size of this, isn't it?

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Back home, I can open the patio doors from the kitchen

0:12:46 > 0:12:49and Cai can go out, and he is playing, but he's safe.

0:12:49 > 0:12:54I wouldn't leave him out here because he could leg it, couldn't he?

0:12:54 > 0:12:57The garden might be a letdown, but with three bedrooms,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00this house does have more space than the couple's property at home.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- Tidy sized double, isn't it? - Yeah. Nice and big.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06But again, the view's a problem.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Overlooking other houses wasn't part of Sian's plan.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- Oh, wow, I've moved to New Zealand(!)- Yeah, it is...

0:13:12 > 0:13:13Look at the view. SHE LAUGHS

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- Bit cramped, isn't it? - Yeah, I feel a bit claustrophobic.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20And even a bedroom for guests isn't enough to change her mind.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23We kind of need that little bit of a wow factor

0:13:23 > 0:13:27- so people can understand why we've...- Yeah.- ..why we've moved.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31This house has been a letdown, but would it be somewhere Sian

0:13:31 > 0:13:37and Josh could call home with their £125,000 to £130,000 budget?

0:13:37 > 0:13:41- I'd say £125,000.- I just... I think it would be less.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44I would say the £115,000 mark.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46- Shall we have a look?- Yeah.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47I'm a bit nervous now.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56HE INTAKES BREATH AND CHUCKLES

0:13:56 > 0:13:58Oh!

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- That's much more than I thought it would be.- Yeah.- £133,000 is...

0:14:02 > 0:14:04- A bit of a shock, really.- Yeah.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09I feel a bit gutted. The other two properties need to be less expensive.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11- A bit more special. - A bit more special.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14So, it's a bit worrying because...

0:14:14 > 0:14:18I don't want to be more disappointed than I am right now.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21The reality of this property's price has floored Sian.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Her attempt to convince Josh to move isn't off to a good start.

0:14:25 > 0:14:26To win him round

0:14:26 > 0:14:29any house will have to offer more than they have at home.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Onwards and upwards, the couple move to the suburb of Meadowbank.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40With nearby beaches and schools, and just a short commute to Auckland,

0:14:40 > 0:14:43it's popular with families looking for more affordable housing.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49- It's cute-looking, isn't it? - It's nice it's a bit off the road.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52But will it be as endearing inside?

0:14:52 > 0:14:56This is nice, eh? Nice and airy.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58- I quite like it.- Yeah.

0:14:58 > 0:14:59It's a better start.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01I know it's built up around, but there's trees

0:15:01 > 0:15:06- and stuff breaking it up, so it's not so in-your-face.- Yeah.

0:15:06 > 0:15:07So far, so good.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10But discovering the garden actually belongs to the neighbours

0:15:10 > 0:15:11leads to more disappointment.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15- It's a real shame that we won't have any outside space.- No.

0:15:15 > 0:15:20You know, you can't really let Cai play on the drive, can you?

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Lacking a big garden again could be another dealbreaker for Josh.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25I think I'd pull my hair out

0:15:25 > 0:15:28if I couldn't be able to go outside in the garden.

0:15:28 > 0:15:29It would do my head in.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32Sian seems happy with the dining area, though.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36I wouldn't mind sitting here, eating my breakfast, looking out on that.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39And I like the calendar!

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Don't think that comes with the house!

0:15:41 > 0:15:45And unfortunately, the tiny kitchen isn't as attractive.

0:15:45 > 0:15:46Bit of a shoe box, isn't it?

0:15:46 > 0:15:48Look at that sink, it's like, you know,

0:15:48 > 0:15:50you can only wash one plate at a time.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54This doesn't give off, like, a family vibe, to be honest with you.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59- No, it's like a flat for...- Yeah, one or two people, isn't it?- Yes.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Like the previous property, this house just isn't what

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Sian envisaged moving across the world for.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08Just a bit gutted that there's no garden and the kitchen is tiny.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11So I can't see us living here.

0:16:11 > 0:16:14A look at the master bedroom restores some hope.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15Nice room, isn't it?

0:16:15 > 0:16:16Lovely big room.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- Built-in wardrobes again.- Yep.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23And it doesn't seem so built up because of the trees and things.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25And though there's only two bedrooms,

0:16:25 > 0:16:27the second leaves Josh speechless.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34THEY LAUGH

0:16:34 > 0:16:35He's funny, isn't he?

0:16:37 > 0:16:40A closer look gives Sian serious food for thought.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43- This would be Cai's room, wouldn't it?- Yeah.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47But then, I don't know if I like that he's looking out on the road

0:16:47 > 0:16:49and he's the closest one to the front door.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52And the bathroom isn't a great selling point either.

0:16:52 > 0:16:53This is a bit cramped, isn't it?

0:16:53 > 0:16:56- It's not child friendly at all, is it, really?- No.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59I'm a bit disappointed.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03Everything seems to be scaled down here but more expensive.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07Despite a good start, this place has also been a disappointment.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Could the price make it more appealing?

0:17:09 > 0:17:13The couple's budget is £125,000 to £130,000.

0:17:13 > 0:17:19I think it's going to be around the £128,000 mark.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21But I'm hoping it's less

0:17:21 > 0:17:25so we can still have hope that we could afford something better.

0:17:25 > 0:17:29I think it's worth about £120,000. It is...

0:17:29 > 0:17:33OK, the location is quite near to Auckland,

0:17:33 > 0:17:35but, you know, at the end of the day,

0:17:35 > 0:17:37it is only a two-bedroom house.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48- Shall we have a look?- Yeah.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- A-ha! Bang on!- Yeah.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57Good guess, Sian. £128,000.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Seeing the prices of properties so far, it has put a doubt in my mind.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03But, d'you know, I suppose if it was someone from New Zealand

0:18:03 > 0:18:06coming to Wales, if you are looking around Cardiff,

0:18:06 > 0:18:07they are going to be expensive,

0:18:07 > 0:18:11and if you go to where we are from, with that sort of budget,

0:18:11 > 0:18:15you'll be...you know, you'll get a really tidy house, won't you?

0:18:16 > 0:18:19So far, their day exploring Auckland's properties

0:18:19 > 0:18:22has fallen way short of even Sian's expectations.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26Can their last viewing deliver the right balance of bang for buck?

0:18:31 > 0:18:35Situated in the township of Parakai, 27 miles northwest of Auckland,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39we found what should be the couple's ideal property.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42This more rural location promises more value for money,

0:18:42 > 0:18:47but will the house have the wow factor Sian wants?

0:18:47 > 0:18:51- First impressions, much, much better, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54At last, something to smile about.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56And Sian's quick to point out the outside space.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59It's not massive, but there's a garden

0:18:59 > 0:19:01and there's plenty of room for Cai to play in.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03To have that decking there, it's nice.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06- We could just come out and eat our supper and things.- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07From outside, at least,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10this property is much more in line with Sian's dream.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14I'm really liking this one. I hope the inside is nice.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Only one way to find out.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18- Nice little kitchen.- Yeah.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21The only thing that I would add to this,

0:19:21 > 0:19:24is I'd want to have the big kitchen table in the kitchen.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27That could be arranged, but may not be enough.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30It kind of feels like a big, static caravan, doesn't it?

0:19:30 > 0:19:32It also needs some TLC.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34But Sian's determined to stay positive

0:19:34 > 0:19:36as the couple check out the master bedroom.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39This room is, you know, it's an all right room.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43- Is this a walk-in wardrobe? - I don't think it's walk-in.

0:19:43 > 0:19:44- It's a wardrobe.- Wardrobe.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Unless there's a hidden Narnia at the back,

0:19:46 > 0:19:48you won't go far in that wardrobe!

0:19:48 > 0:19:51Overall, Josh is confused.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53The other houses...

0:19:53 > 0:19:56I kind of knew before I went in there, this is not for me.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58- So the rest didn't really matter. - Yeah.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01But driving up here, I thought, this is going to be amazing.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03I think we're just being a bit too fussy.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05I mean, it's got everything we've asked for, really, isn't it?

0:20:05 > 0:20:10It's also got somewhere for guests, even if it is on the petite side.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13It's really, really small, isn't it?

0:20:13 > 0:20:15But it is a third bedroom, which is a plus, isn't it?

0:20:15 > 0:20:20You've just got to think of it as a couple-of-years place.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24I mean, we can't move to the other side of the world and buy a mansion.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28You know, we are not any richer in this country than we are in Wales.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Sian is doing everything she can to hold on to the dream.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35Even if the house isn't perfect, it could potentially be a home

0:20:35 > 0:20:41but only if within reach of the couple's £125,000 to £130,000 budget.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45Well, it's definitely over budget.

0:20:45 > 0:20:50I would think that it was around the £150,000 mark.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54I'd say it's about £140,000.

0:21:01 > 0:21:02- Shall we have a look?- Yeah.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07- OK. - SHE LAUGHS

0:21:07 > 0:21:11- OK. I don't think that's ever achievable for us.- No.

0:21:11 > 0:21:12That's a shock.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17If we had that kind of money, we could have an amazing house at home.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20- I can't believe that. - Yeah.- That's ridiculous.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22You know, if this house, which is

0:21:22 > 0:21:27one that we'd settle for, for a few years, is way out of our reach,

0:21:27 > 0:21:32then, you know, I don't see that it's doable at all.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35Well, I think it's pretty impossible, to be honest with you.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39- It's proper burst the bubble, hasn't it?- Yeah.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42Discovering the true cost of property in Auckland

0:21:42 > 0:21:43has left Sian stunned

0:21:43 > 0:21:48and could be a real blow to her chances of convincing Josh to move.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Property 1 was much too small in every way, apart from the price tag.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Property 2 was a non-runner

0:21:54 > 0:21:57when the couple found out it had no garden,

0:21:57 > 0:21:59yet was still near the top of their budget.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01Although far from their ideal home,

0:22:01 > 0:22:06the final property did give Sian hope the dream was achievable,

0:22:06 > 0:22:10until they discovered it was substantially over budget.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13So, when all's said and done, has house-hunting left them

0:22:13 > 0:22:15favouring property at home or away?

0:22:23 > 0:22:26- UK.- UK.- I think it is a no-brainer, isn't it?

0:22:26 > 0:22:30Yeah, it's not really something we need to discuss, is it?

0:22:30 > 0:22:32It's just plain sailing UK.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35- I think our budget means nothing out here.- No.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38You know, we'd need to be a heck of a lot better off

0:22:38 > 0:22:39to actually do the move.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46With property prospects disappointing,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Sian's dream has taken a dive,

0:22:48 > 0:22:52and Josh could be further away than ever from agreeing to make the move.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55Emigrating is all about getting a better work/life balance, though.

0:22:55 > 0:23:00So, if the right job opportunities exist, it may not be game over yet.

0:23:03 > 0:23:08In the UK, Josh works between 60 and 70 hours a week on his dad's farm.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10The hours are pretty tough going,

0:23:10 > 0:23:12you don't get to see much of the family.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13The work itself, I enjoy.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16You know, it is long hours, but that's the trade of farming.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Sian works as a payroll administrator

0:23:19 > 0:23:22and volunteers with the Welsh Special Constabulary.

0:23:22 > 0:23:23I'm hoping that it will lead me

0:23:23 > 0:23:27into the role of regular officer in the future.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31She'd love to turn her volunteering into a career, but whatever path

0:23:31 > 0:23:33she follows, getting the right hours would be key.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Our working hours are vitally important.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39We need to be working less and living more.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Ideally, Josh would like to be a tree surgeon

0:23:42 > 0:23:45but if the money isn't right, he'll be sticking with the farm.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47I'm not expecting to earn millions

0:23:47 > 0:23:51but if the salary's not good enough, it'll be end of story then.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58While Cai's looked after by a childminder,

0:23:58 > 0:24:01the couple are anxiously awaiting what their day exploring

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Auckland's job market might bring.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06This is probably one of the most important factors

0:24:06 > 0:24:07in moving to New Zealand.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10I just want good news. And nothing else!

0:24:12 > 0:24:16For Sian, the day begins with a meeting with immigration consultant

0:24:16 > 0:24:20Holger Weischede, to find out about joining New Zealand's police force.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22And unfortunately, it's bad news.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25The police is only recruiting residents.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27You don't have to be a citizen

0:24:27 > 0:24:30but you need to be a resident visa holder already.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34So, what would be the best way for us to get residency?

0:24:34 > 0:24:38I see a potential for the skilled migrant category application,

0:24:38 > 0:24:41most likely it's going to be Josh as the principal applicant

0:24:41 > 0:24:45and you as a secondary and the child as a dependant child, obviously.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Once you've got the residents visa approved,

0:24:48 > 0:24:53that's when you can apply and be considered for the police positions.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Sian's dreams of a life on the beat may have to wait.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04Meanwhile, Josh is meeting James Alexander,

0:25:04 > 0:25:08a project manager with one of Auckland's tree surgery companies.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15Australasia-wide, we employ, probably, 400-450 people currently.

0:25:15 > 0:25:20So we've got branches up north, in Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch

0:25:20 > 0:25:22and offshore in Brisbane.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26Hopefully, that could mean plenty of opportunities.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28So you've seen my CV, what's the chance of me having a job out here?

0:25:28 > 0:25:32Currently, with your CV and being a non-qualified arborist,

0:25:32 > 0:25:34we couldn't employ you in that role.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38It's not the best start for Josh either, but already experienced

0:25:38 > 0:25:42in chainsawing, James reveals branching out shouldn't be too hard.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43You've already got the chainsaw NPTC.

0:25:43 > 0:25:48You need rope and harness and competency for chainsaw in a tree.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52If you were to get those two, then you become of much more interest.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55We could actually take you on as an arborist as such.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Confident he can add to his qualifications at home, Josh would

0:25:58 > 0:26:01be happy to do so, provided his efforts pay off in the long run.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05- What's the demand?- It's currently on the job shortage list.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08I would have thought your chances of getting a job would be pretty good.

0:26:08 > 0:26:09It's encouraging,

0:26:09 > 0:26:13but would working as a tree surgeon allow him to cut down his hours?

0:26:13 > 0:26:17- So, roughly, what's the working hours?- 47 and a half hours a week.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20So, compared to your farm work, it's quite a bit less.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23That should be music to Sian's ears.

0:26:23 > 0:26:24All that's left now is to talk money.

0:26:24 > 0:26:2625 an hour or more

0:26:26 > 0:26:31and that would roughly equate to NZ52,000 a year.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34If he gained the necessary qualifications,

0:26:34 > 0:26:37Josh could earn around £7,000 more than he does back home.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40It's a positive end to the meeting.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Meanwhile, Sian's turned her attention

0:26:42 > 0:26:44from the forces to finance.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47So, I work full-time in finance but I volunteer with the police,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49so I'd be quite happy with either.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51To find out more, she meets Rachel Smith,

0:26:51 > 0:26:54a payroll and admin recruitment specialist.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Based on my experience, do you think I need more qualifications

0:26:57 > 0:27:01- or do you think I am employable? - You'd definitely be employable.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03You've got good administration skills,

0:27:03 > 0:27:07so we could put you in a variety of different admin roles.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10That's better news for Sian, but would the hours suit?

0:27:10 > 0:27:12What are the working hours here?

0:27:12 > 0:27:15Most of the roles we are looking at for you would be full-time,

0:27:15 > 0:27:17so between 37 to 40 hours a week.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19That's around what Sian's used to.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23So through temp work with your organisation,

0:27:23 > 0:27:25what would my salary be?

0:27:25 > 0:27:28For a temp or contract assignment, you'd be looking around

0:27:28 > 0:27:3320 to 25 an hour, plus your holiday pay and benefits,

0:27:33 > 0:27:39which would equate to an annual salary of NZ40,000 to NZ45,000.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42An increase of between £5,000 and £7,000 means

0:27:42 > 0:27:46despite a disappointing start, Sian's day has turned out well.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49I'm feeling much happier because the job opportunities are there.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54As far as payroll goes,

0:27:54 > 0:27:58the police is maybe a possibility for the future.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Sian's enthusiasm for the dream has been reignited, but has the day

0:28:01 > 0:28:05been enough to convince Josh to turn his back on the family farm?

0:28:05 > 0:28:06So, we've learned loads today

0:28:06 > 0:28:10and based on everything we have found out, we're going to vote.

0:28:18 > 0:28:19- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24I thought you were going to say UK.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Yes, I chose New Zealand because, you know,

0:28:26 > 0:28:29I've really wanted to do tree surgery for a while,

0:28:29 > 0:28:33and obviously, it's less hours and more pay than what I'm on now,

0:28:33 > 0:28:35so it seems like a win-win situation.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37Yeah, more pay and more family time.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40- Which is what we wanted, isn't it? - Yeah.- So, New Zealand.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51With a vote for New Zealand from Josh,

0:28:51 > 0:28:54it looks like the couple's day checking out work prospects

0:28:54 > 0:28:57could have brought Sian's dream back on track.

0:28:57 > 0:29:02A move for her has always been about spending more time together

0:29:02 > 0:29:06so will a rare family day out spent sampling the Kiwi lifestyle

0:29:06 > 0:29:08win Josh around once more?

0:29:10 > 0:29:12Shall we try and find some?

0:29:12 > 0:29:17Back in the UK, the family enjoy roaming the countryside, so today,

0:29:17 > 0:29:20they take Cai to Kiwi Valley Farm, outside Auckland.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26Cai's no stranger to farmyards,

0:29:26 > 0:29:29but the chance to hang out with Mum and Dad is a real treat.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32Do you like him?

0:29:32 > 0:29:35And fulfilling her desire for Cai to see more of his dad,

0:29:35 > 0:29:37the day's a hit with Sian, too.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Today has definitely reinforced the dream.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42It's just great for Cai to have both of us and to be able to

0:29:42 > 0:29:47go from one to the other, rather than just me showing him things, you know?

0:29:47 > 0:29:51Spending time together with his own family, though, has reminded Josh

0:29:51 > 0:29:54more days like this would mean seeing less of loved ones back home.

0:29:54 > 0:29:59Being here does make me realise how much family and friends mean to me.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02The most important thing is, you know, Cai, I think.

0:30:02 > 0:30:07It will be a shame, really, for Cai to grow up without his grandparents.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10Sian is aware her dream presents Josh with a dilemma.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12But seeing how happy Cai is with both his parents,

0:30:12 > 0:30:16she is still determined moving would be for the best.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Yeah, I guess I do feel guilty, because I think he feels torn

0:30:19 > 0:30:22and he knows I'd like to move

0:30:22 > 0:30:24but he knows he'd like to stay with his friends and family.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27I think Sian wants to move to New Zealand more than me.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30I think I've got a lot more stuff holding me back.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38Sian and Josh could yet be at loggerheads

0:30:38 > 0:30:41come the end of the week, but has their family day out been enough to

0:30:41 > 0:30:45bring Josh one step closer to a move down under?

0:30:45 > 0:30:49So, we've really enjoyed spending family time together today.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51And based on lifestyle, we're going to vote.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06New Zealand.

0:31:06 > 0:31:07New Zealand.

0:31:09 > 0:31:10I'm glad you said that.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14I've realised now I've been spending a lot more quality time with Cai

0:31:14 > 0:31:19and, d'you know, obviously, if I move, I will be working,

0:31:19 > 0:31:22but we figured out the hours will be less than what I'm working back at

0:31:22 > 0:31:27- Wales, so, yeah, I'll hopefully have more time to spend with Cai.- Yeah.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42When it came to lifestyle, Josh put his own family first.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44But Sian knows there's a long way to go yet

0:31:44 > 0:31:49if he's to be persuaded the family's future lies down under.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52If she succeeds, the couple would rely on proceeds from the sale

0:31:52 > 0:31:54of their home to fund the move.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57They believe it's worth around £80,000.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01To see if they're right, we sent round two estate agents.

0:32:01 > 0:32:05Oh, nice plain decor. Good for marketing. Nice room.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07Very, very large kitchen.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Dining area, with a very big table.

0:32:10 > 0:32:11Modern units.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13- Modern units!- I painted them!

0:32:13 > 0:32:15Very nice conservatory.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17With access out onto the garden.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19What a great sized double room.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Perfect also to get a cot in.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25Ideal having the mirrored wardrobes.

0:32:25 > 0:32:27Really nice sized second bedroom.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30Obviously, a little child's room. A little boy.

0:32:30 > 0:32:37In the current market, I'd value it at between £85,000 and £90,000.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- For a quick sale, about £80,000.- Yeah.

0:32:40 > 0:32:46The valuation on this property for the open market would be £84,950.

0:32:46 > 0:32:50Or a quick sale figure of £79,950.

0:32:51 > 0:32:57- OK.- Happy with that?- Yeah. Yeah. I'm chuffed with that.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00I thought they were 80, tops. I was...

0:33:00 > 0:33:02I thought if we have 80, it is a good sale.

0:33:02 > 0:33:03While Cai sleeps,

0:33:03 > 0:33:07the couple move on to see how their finances would stack up in Auckland.

0:33:07 > 0:33:09If this is positive,

0:33:09 > 0:33:13then Josh will have a hard time trying to fight his little battle.

0:33:14 > 0:33:19So, you know, I cross my fingers that it is positive.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22We've provided them with a comparison of costs,

0:33:22 > 0:33:25starting with the weekly food shop.

0:33:25 > 0:33:29- Everything is a bit dearer. - Blueberries at a pound.

0:33:29 > 0:33:33- Cherry tomatoes are a pound. Green beans are £1.15. It adds up.- Yeah.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36And it's not just fruit and veg that cost more.

0:33:36 > 0:33:42Chicken and salmon are over £3 dearer.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44There's no two ways about it, I'm not losing chicken.

0:33:44 > 0:33:45- SHE LAUGHS - That's number one.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47The couple do the sums to find out

0:33:47 > 0:33:49what it means for their overall bill.

0:33:49 > 0:33:51£47.91.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54Worse off.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57- Every week.- Every week, yeah.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59It's nearly £200 more each month.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02And that's before they've looked at the bigger bills.

0:34:02 > 0:34:06Sian and Josh base their figures on the first property they viewed.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09So, oil in the UK, we pay £50.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11And in New Zealand, we'd pay nothing,

0:34:11 > 0:34:13because we wouldn't have central heating, would we?

0:34:13 > 0:34:16But childcare is a bit dearer.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18It's £48.41 dearer.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22But that is because in the UK, we only have three days

0:34:22 > 0:34:24because he's with your mother.

0:34:24 > 0:34:29- Transport costs... - We would be worse off by £183.34.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32- This isn't looking very good, is it?- No.

0:34:32 > 0:34:33A tot up of the figures reveals

0:34:33 > 0:34:38the couple would spend £561 more a month in New Zealand.

0:34:38 > 0:34:42It could spell disaster for Sian's chances of keeping Josh onside,

0:34:42 > 0:34:45unless their salaries could make up the difference.

0:34:45 > 0:34:52So, in the UK, our total income is £2,426.26.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55New Zealand would be...

0:34:55 > 0:34:58£2,959.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02They'd earn more, but not enough to cover their increase in spending.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05- We are worse off by... BOTH:- ..£28.58.

0:35:07 > 0:35:08A month.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11- It's not a major difference. - No, but I am shocked.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14I honestly thought we'd be better off, money-wise, in New Zealand.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17Sian's determined to fight for her dream, though,

0:35:17 > 0:35:20believing £30 a month is a price worth paying.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23Do you think £6.60 a week is worth

0:35:23 > 0:35:27having more quality time with Cai and me?

0:35:27 > 0:35:28Yeah, obviously.

0:35:29 > 0:35:30So...

0:35:31 > 0:35:34Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that needs to fall into place.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38But if things fall into place, it's £6.60 a week you are paying to

0:35:38 > 0:35:44have sun for ten months a year, for a bigger house,

0:35:44 > 0:35:50for, you know, better job prospects, and for quality time with Cai.

0:35:50 > 0:35:51Which is what we want.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I want to do it.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59I want to move. But I don't think you're going to let me.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05It'll take more than being a few pounds in the red to put Sian off.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08But will the lifestyle they could have in New Zealand be enough

0:36:08 > 0:36:10to reconcile Josh with the figures?

0:36:15 > 0:36:16- UK.- New Zealand.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20I think Sian is more of a risk taker than I am.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23The reality check is slightly negative

0:36:23 > 0:36:26but it's nothing, really, compared to, you know,

0:36:26 > 0:36:28all the things that outweigh that.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36With unfavourable finances making Josh vote for the UK,

0:36:36 > 0:36:39it looks like Sian's dream could be knocked for six.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42And there is one more obstacle to overcome.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44With Josh already concerned about taking Cai

0:36:44 > 0:36:48away from family in Wales, could watching messages from loved ones

0:36:48 > 0:36:50back home be the final nail in the coffin?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54- Are you looking forward to seeing Tadcu?- Yeah!

0:36:55 > 0:36:59- And Mamgu, on the telly?- Yeah.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02I think watching the messages will make us

0:37:02 > 0:37:04see what we are leaving behind.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06- Shall we take a look to see what they say?- Yeah.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13Hi, Sian. Hi, Josh. Hi, Cai. Hope you're having a fantastic week.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16- BOTH:- Hello, Sian, Josh and Cai!

0:37:16 > 0:37:19- Hiya, Josh...- Hiya, Cai, Josh and Sian.- ..Sian, Cai.

0:37:19 > 0:37:20As a family, they're great together.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22They pull together like a team.

0:37:22 > 0:37:26They just bounce off each other, really, don't they?

0:37:26 > 0:37:28They balance each other well.

0:37:28 > 0:37:30Josh has his ideas

0:37:30 > 0:37:32and Sian calms him down.

0:37:34 > 0:37:36- Sian's very different to the both of us, isn't she?- Yeah.

0:37:36 > 0:37:41Yeah, she's the confident one who likes to do, like, everything.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43Cai is just... He's one of the gang.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45There is a gang of little boys and he fits right in.

0:37:45 > 0:37:46I know he's my grandson,

0:37:46 > 0:37:49but he's one of the nicest little kids I've ever come across.

0:37:50 > 0:37:51It'll start me off, now!

0:37:55 > 0:37:59Josh, I think, he's Sian's rock, isn't he?

0:37:59 > 0:38:02You can see it in his eyes, what he thinks of Cai.

0:38:02 > 0:38:05- It glows out of him. It has made him.- Yeah.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07If they are to go,

0:38:07 > 0:38:09this is the opportunity and this is the best time.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12And, obviously, we're going to miss her, because we always...

0:38:12 > 0:38:15- the three of us do things together...- Yeah.- ..all the time.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18So we will really miss her, but we want the best for her at the same time.

0:38:18 > 0:38:19It would be really odd.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23- Like a jigsaw with a missing piece, in a way.- Yeah.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26I think Aaron will miss Cai as a friend, days out,

0:38:26 > 0:38:30and I'll just miss the help and support from my friend Sian.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36Well, you know, because we are so close, it's going to

0:38:36 > 0:38:38make the gap even worse.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42And he'll be just as bad, I can tell.

0:38:44 > 0:38:46We'll just have to go out and see them.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49Yeah, but you can't go out every...

0:38:49 > 0:38:52We will really miss you if you do go, but I know that you all know

0:38:52 > 0:38:56what you want to do and I would totally respect that

0:38:56 > 0:38:59and I hope that you just make the right decision, really.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02I think if you decide to go to New Zealand, we'd really miss you,

0:39:02 > 0:39:04obviously. We'd miss you like crazy.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07But if you think it's the right decision for you,

0:39:07 > 0:39:08then we fully support you.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11We will miss you, as you know.

0:39:13 > 0:39:17But we can come out and see you at some point.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20Well, yeah, we just wish you all the best.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Say, "Don't go, Cai".

0:39:25 > 0:39:26Don't go, Cai.

0:39:28 > 0:39:32Yeah. It was like a mix of emotions, wasn't it?

0:39:32 > 0:39:35It's made me realise that I do need to think more

0:39:35 > 0:39:36about leaving them behind.

0:39:36 > 0:39:40You know, Cai's going to be... no family at all over here.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42Although we might be giving him a better future

0:39:42 > 0:39:45but we're taking away his past, if that makes sense.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48I don't think it's as easy as you were going to think it is, to leave them.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51Well, that's the hardest part. You know, that's the only thing.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58Their week in New Zealand has shown Sian

0:39:58 > 0:40:01and Josh the opportunities the country offers could mean

0:40:01 > 0:40:04more quality time together with their son.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06But any move would come at a cost,

0:40:06 > 0:40:10losing the family support they enjoy at home.

0:40:10 > 0:40:12As their final decision approaches,

0:40:12 > 0:40:15will the couple decide that's a price worth paying,

0:40:15 > 0:40:19to achieve the family life Sian so desperately wants?

0:40:23 > 0:40:25Things got off to a bumpy start when the couple

0:40:25 > 0:40:29realised their property budget wouldn't go far in Auckland.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33But everything that followed has left the couple's opinions divided.

0:40:33 > 0:40:37Now that we've been here, and we've seen what we've seen,

0:40:37 > 0:40:41I definitely have more of a hunger for New Zealand.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43I think I am feeling mixed emotions in that,

0:40:43 > 0:40:46d'you know, I thought we would have been better off, on the whole,

0:40:46 > 0:40:49in New Zealand, on the salary and stuff,

0:40:49 > 0:40:52but it turns out we would be better in the UK.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55Not prepared to sacrifice her dream for the sake of a few pounds,

0:40:55 > 0:40:58Sian's determined to keep focused on what

0:40:58 > 0:41:00she originally wanted from the country.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04The main thing for me is that Josh and Cai gets to bond

0:41:04 > 0:41:09and get to, you know, better their relationship.

0:41:09 > 0:41:13But for Josh, the advantage of more time with his son has left him torn.

0:41:13 > 0:41:17It has created conflict, in myself, type thing.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19One half saying we just stay in Wales, and the other half saying,

0:41:19 > 0:41:21you know, flee the nest, you know.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24The world's... You know, the world's a small place.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27With time running out, Sian knows Josh's biggest stumbling block

0:41:27 > 0:41:30will be taking Cai away from grandparents in Wales.

0:41:32 > 0:41:37I don't know what he's going to decide because, you know, New Zealand

0:41:37 > 0:41:42is absolutely fantastic, and we've been able to see that this week.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45But obviously, our friends and family are amazing

0:41:45 > 0:41:47and it's a hell of a thing to leave behind.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50You want to see into the future what it will be like on both sides

0:41:50 > 0:41:53but obviously you can't do that.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56But, yeah, it is, it is going to be a tough decision.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59The week's been an enlightening experience for the couple.

0:41:59 > 0:42:00Now it is time to find out

0:42:00 > 0:42:04if it's been enough to convince Josh to buy into Sian's dream

0:42:04 > 0:42:07of more family time together on the other side of the world.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10We've had a really amazing family-oriented week.

0:42:10 > 0:42:13And based on everything we've found out this week,

0:42:13 > 0:42:15we are going to do our final vote.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31- New Zealand.- New Zealand.

0:42:33 > 0:42:34No way!

0:42:34 > 0:42:38It is an awesome place and we could do getting more time as a family.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40So clearly, a future...

0:42:40 > 0:42:42We will take the plunge.

0:42:42 > 0:42:46I genuinely thought that you liked New Zealand

0:42:46 > 0:42:48but I didn't think you could leave your roots and your family.

0:42:48 > 0:42:54So, I am overwhelmed that you chose New Zealand

0:42:54 > 0:42:56and extremely excited.

0:43:04 > 0:43:08With their week in New Zealand showing Josh just what his family

0:43:08 > 0:43:11could gain from a move, it looks like the couple could be well on

0:43:11 > 0:43:14their way to making a new life for themselves

0:43:14 > 0:43:16on the other side of the world.

0:43:16 > 0:43:19We wish them all the best of luck for the future.
