0:00:02 > 0:00:05You've spent your life believing you should be living on the other side

0:00:05 > 0:00:09of the world, in a country you've never even visited.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13But when push came to shove, could you actually go ahead with the move,

0:00:13 > 0:00:17especially when it meant potential heartbreak?

0:00:17 > 0:00:20George Hobbs believes his destiny lies Down Under.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23I am, at heart, an Australian person.

0:00:23 > 0:00:24Although I've never been there,

0:00:24 > 0:00:28I feel like I would be a happier person there.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31But when some aspects of a trial week disappoint...

0:00:31 > 0:00:34- This house would be a reason not to come.- It would.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38..and his wife can't bear to leave loves ones behind...

0:00:38 > 0:00:41It would be really hard to leave my mum. Really, really hard.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45..will George's lifelong dream be gone for good?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48I'm just been pulled in two directions and, in the end,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51we have to make a decision.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20With one of the lowest population densities in the world,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23it's no surprise so many Brits flock to Australia's

0:01:23 > 0:01:27spacious shores every year, in search of a better life.

0:01:27 > 0:01:32Today, the country has over one million UK-born residents,

0:01:32 > 0:01:35but the move doesn't work for everyone and, each year,

0:01:35 > 0:01:3911,000 people make the journey back home to Britain.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Ancestral ties to Australia

0:01:41 > 0:01:46have given George Hobbs a yearning to uproot his family

0:01:46 > 0:01:49and start a new life with them on the other side of the world.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52Achieving his wish to visit the country, at long last,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56he'll now have just one week to convince his young children

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and wife, it's where their future lies.

0:02:01 > 0:02:06The journey to Perth has taken the Hobbs almost 10,000 miles from home

0:02:06 > 0:02:09and 18 hours in the air hasn't been a pleasant experience.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- The journey was horrible. - I hated the journey.

0:02:14 > 0:02:19We were determined to get here and say, "Yeah, no, we feel great."

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Although we look all right, we're absolutely shattered and, yes,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23it is a long, long way.

0:02:23 > 0:02:29George can't believe his feet are finally on Australian soil.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32This is a lifetime's ambition, to see Australia for the first time.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Fantastic to be here.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36But the coming week will be no holiday

0:02:36 > 0:02:39and wife Paula's already feeling the pressure.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Thinking about it as a permanent thing is...

0:02:43 > 0:02:45incredibly scary. Really scary.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48George knows just what's at stake in the week ahead.

0:02:48 > 0:02:53We have to make a decision about whether we're going to make the move

0:02:53 > 0:02:55out here, so, it's serious stuff.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59A lifetime of dreaming hangs in the balance, as the family set out

0:02:59 > 0:03:04on a week of discovery which could change their lives forever.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Meet the Hobbs...

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Dad George, mum Paula, Paula's son, Jack, who's 14,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Eddie, aged nine, and Evie, who's six.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Life's good in the UK, with a beautiful home, secure job

0:03:16 > 0:03:20and loving family, but George wants to give it all up

0:03:20 > 0:03:22for a new life Down Under.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25I've had this dream of going to Australia for at least 40 years.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- Really, ever since I can remember. - It's really inside him.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31He really... It is something that he really feels like he belongs there.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Part of his heart is in Australia.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36George's fascination with Australia is inspired by

0:03:36 > 0:03:40his great-grandfather, Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44He moved to Australia in 1887, when he was just 23.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46The young Brit went on to design

0:03:46 > 0:03:49many of Perth's most important buildings

0:03:49 > 0:03:51and, on the outbreak of World War I, was given command

0:03:51 > 0:03:55of the artillery of a division of the Australian Army.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58That's Edward VIII, presenting some medals.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01My great-grandfather's in the background there.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06At the end of the war, that's the command of the division,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08my great-grandfather in the middle

0:04:08 > 0:04:09and Edward VIII right next to him.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13A triumphant war campaign saw George's great-grandfather

0:04:13 > 0:04:15highly decorated and George

0:04:15 > 0:04:17is incredibly proud of his achievements.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20These two and these two are his knighthoods.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22These are the British medals and, then, there's two

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Croix de Guerre with palms,

0:04:24 > 0:04:28which the French gave him, because most of his success was in France.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32On the hero's return to Perth, a statue was erected in his honour,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35one George has only ever seen in a photograph.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38And on the statue, he's got his medals on him.

0:04:38 > 0:04:44I've always, always wanted to go, to connect up with this history.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48George has been captivated by his Australian heritage for decades,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51but he's the only one of his six siblings never to have visited.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I was going to go at the end of university, for sure. And then...

0:04:54 > 0:04:56..I didn't do that.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00And then, jobs and children came along

0:05:00 > 0:05:02and I've still not managed to do it.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Both George and Paula have children from previous marriages

0:05:06 > 0:05:09and, to date, time's never been right to explore a move.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11I had Jack, he had John and Mads,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14and then Eddie and Evie came along with us.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17So, it just didn't seem that it would ever be possible for us,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20with our family dynamics.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22With his two older children at university,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25George believes now is the time to not only visit,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28but uproot and move his family Down Under for good.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Yeah, we have a great lifestyle here and we don't want to lose that,

0:05:31 > 0:05:35we don't want the children to lose what they've got.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38We want them to gain from going to Australia. We're in a good place,

0:05:38 > 0:05:39but we could be in a better place

0:05:39 > 0:05:42and I think Australia would allow us to achieve that.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Paula is all too aware of how much passion

0:05:45 > 0:05:46George holds for the country.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50I, kind of, feel, as his wife, it something in his heart,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52since I've known him. And I feel like it's important

0:05:52 > 0:05:55to support him in that. At least try, give it a go.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59But a move for her would mean potential heartache.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Following her husband's dream would mean abandoning the close

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- relationship she has with her mum. - My mum and I are very, very close.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08I'm her only daughter. I've got three brothers.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11She gave us a great life, we've all done really well.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Now she's old, I feel it's time for me to look after her.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Yeah.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21It would be really hard to leave my mum. Really, really hard.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Definitely.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28The whole family's future depends on the upcoming week on the other

0:06:28 > 0:06:29side of the world,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32and if Australia can live up to the paradise built up

0:06:32 > 0:06:36in George's mind over decades of dreaming.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41It's a long, long dream and what's riding on the week is finding out

0:06:41 > 0:06:45whether that actually is just a pipe dream.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47He's got such high expectations

0:06:47 > 0:06:49of going out to Australia. This is what he thinks

0:06:49 > 0:06:52he's been waiting for all his life. On the one hand, I want to support

0:06:52 > 0:06:56his dream. On the other hand, I feel like I would be letting down

0:06:56 > 0:07:01- the people I love most in the UK. - It's make or break time for George.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05The next few days will either see his family following

0:07:05 > 0:07:09in the footsteps made by his great-grandfather over 120 years ago

0:07:09 > 0:07:12or stay put in the UK for ever.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16I think the chance to go now has got to be grabbed.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19And it's a last chance, because if we don't do it,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22this little window of opportunity that we've have got,

0:07:22 > 0:07:23then, we never will.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37The family will be spending their trial week in Perth,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39but one person's been left behind.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Paula's son, Jack, has had to stay at home,

0:07:42 > 0:07:44to study for his upcoming GCSEs.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47The final leg of the rest of the family's journey brings them

0:07:47 > 0:07:49to Mount Lawley, a sought-after

0:07:49 > 0:07:52suburb on the city centre's outskirts.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56This three-bedroom, two-bathroom property

0:07:56 > 0:07:57will be their base for the week.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02- Will it come up to scratch? - I was hoping for something...

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- ..a lot bigger.- Maybe not.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- It's a bit gloomy.- Dark.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- It is an "Oh, dear," I'm afraid.- It's small.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14It's far from the start George was hoping for.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- This house would be a reason not to come.- It would.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- If it was all we could afford.- Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Although it hasn't been the best introduction to Australia,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24George's spirits are not dampened.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26I'm really dead keen to come,

0:08:26 > 0:08:30so what I need to find out is, is that realistic?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34Is what I imagine life's going to be like here, actually what it's

0:08:34 > 0:08:36going to be like?

0:08:36 > 0:08:39But the whole family's aware of the dilemma Paula will face

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- at the end of the week.- My mum needs convincing.- A little bit.

0:08:42 > 0:08:48Yeah, just a little. She doesn't want to leave her mum.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53On the plane, I was thinking of my mum. The distance really hit home.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56Is this place going to offer me enough to leave what I've got,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59which is great? What I've got at home is great. Brilliant.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02And I think I've realised that even more over the last few weeks,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04thinking about coming on this trip.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07After years of longing, George is finally in the city

0:09:07 > 0:09:11his relative helped build and he's determined to make work.

0:09:11 > 0:09:16I'm really going to try this week to put my excited head away

0:09:16 > 0:09:20and really look at it in a practical way, to really help us

0:09:20 > 0:09:22make a final decision.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Back in the UK, the Hobbs live in a six-bedroom detached

0:09:32 > 0:09:34farmhouse, just outside Lancaster.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36A lot of people might look at us and think,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39"You've got a great life! Why would you want to

0:09:39 > 0:09:40"go and live anywhere else?"

0:09:40 > 0:09:42And we'd agree with that, up to a point.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- If there wasn't a better option, we'd be staying here.- Yeah.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50The couple would have a healthy budget of £700,000, to find

0:09:50 > 0:09:52themselves a home in Australia,

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and they know exactly what they're looking for.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Something which is really spacious, really open plan.

0:10:01 > 0:10:06- Goes out to a lovely pool.- Big enough for us and our other children.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09There's going to be a lot of boxes to tick, but we won't go

0:10:09 > 0:10:11unless we find what we're looking for.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Finding the perfect family home in Australia could help

0:10:17 > 0:10:19get Paula on board.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22To give the family an idea of what's available on the Perth

0:10:22 > 0:10:26property market, we've arranged for them to view three properties.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Two close to their budget and a third which should be everything

0:10:29 > 0:10:32they're looking for in a dream home.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35The search begins in Alfred Cove, six miles south of Perth.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Nestled on the banks of the Swan River,

0:10:37 > 0:10:41it is a well-established community, with plenty of good schools

0:10:41 > 0:10:44and excellent transport links to the city centre.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48This five-bedroom, two-bathroom family house should have

0:10:48 > 0:10:50all the space the Hobbs are looking for.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Hopefully, it'll impress more than their accommodation.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Right, guys, here we go.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59- Lovely!- It's a lovely hallway, isn't it?- Shall we have a look in here?

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- It's a bedroom.- This is a lovely, lovely room, isn't it?

0:11:08 > 0:11:10This is what I would expect of a bedroom

0:11:10 > 0:11:14with an en-suite in Australia. This is probably bang on.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16It's a good start.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21- Oh, now, another bedroom. - This is a sweet room.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25It that the side of somebody else's house there, though? It is, isn't it?

0:11:25 > 0:11:27That is slightly weird.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30Neighbours may be just too close for comfort downstairs,

0:11:30 > 0:11:32but the view upstairs has more appeal.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36I think, looking at it from here, it's so quiet, with the tree line.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37Mum and I could set up here,

0:11:37 > 0:11:41watching you playing out the front on your bikes.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44George is already visualising this house as a home

0:11:44 > 0:11:47and everyone else seems impressed, too.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50Oh, my goodness, this is beautiful.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52I love it.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I could definitely see us here. Could you? Could you, George?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- Definitely see us here.- Yeah.

0:11:57 > 0:12:02It's a thumbs-up inside and outdoors also holds some Aussie appeal.

0:12:02 > 0:12:08- Built-in barbecue.- Wow, look at this. This is what I'm talking about.

0:12:08 > 0:12:13- And pool. It's got everything we want.- It absolutely beautiful.

0:12:13 > 0:12:19- It's fantastic.- This outside area is small, but perfectly formed.- Yeah.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- It's just spot on.- Yeah.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25This property's gone down swimmingly well with everyone, but is it

0:12:25 > 0:12:29somewhere the family could afford, given their £700,000 budget?

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- I think it's going to be over 700.- Do you?

0:12:33 > 0:12:39I think somewhere between 650 and 700, think. Right, are we ready?

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Big moment.- This is the moment. Are you going to do it, Eddie?

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Are you going to turn it over? - Eldest's turn.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- Ready?- Come on, come on.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56That's £19,000 over budget.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- That sounds a lot in dollars or pounds, doesn't it?- OK.- Phew!

0:13:00 > 0:13:04That is stretching the budget, definitely.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09But could it be worth finding the extra funds?

0:13:09 > 0:13:11I think we could do that,

0:13:11 > 0:13:15but we, kind of, don't want to be coming here and...

0:13:15 > 0:13:17..having a lot of stress in our life,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19because we've got a huge mortgage again.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22So, we'd have to think about it.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25- It certainly doesn't kill the dream, though.- No.- Definitely not.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29This house may have impressed,

0:13:29 > 0:13:32but affording it could put some pressure on the family's finances.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Will home number two be the perfect fit for the Hobbs'

0:13:36 > 0:13:38plans and wallet?

0:13:38 > 0:13:42It's in White Gum Valley, 12 miles from Perth, but close to the lively

0:13:42 > 0:13:46city of Fremantle, with its bustling streets and cafe strip culture.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Will this four-bedroom property sound the right note?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52HE CLANGS THE BELL

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Do you think we can go in?

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- Right, here we go. What's this room, then? Ah! This is a bedroom.- Gosh.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04- This is big.- I'm not keen on the fact that they have the bedrooms

0:14:04 > 0:14:06at the front of the house.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09It's right on the street, it feels like, which is

0:14:09 > 0:14:11a bit strange for a bedroom.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14It is a typical feature of Australian homes, though.

0:14:14 > 0:14:19- This house has a stunning open-plan living area.- Gosh.- Oh, my gosh!

0:14:19 > 0:14:25- This is different.- This is rustic, this is definitely rustic.- Mmm.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30I actually think it's a really cool house, really cool.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34But I don't know whether I could see me living here.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Can imagine those windows getting absolutely filthy.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41- Imagine trying to clean those.- And the windows aren't the only issue.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42It's got no pool,

0:14:42 > 0:14:46which isn't a massive deal for me...

0:14:46 > 0:14:47It is for me.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54It's a lot less beautiful and perfect than the other place.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57But downstairs lies a more appealing feature.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59- Oh, my gosh!- Barrel!

0:14:59 > 0:15:02It is a wine room. That would be perfect for us.

0:15:02 > 0:15:06This could be a great room for the kids, as, you know, a teenage den.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10- It would be fab. - Finally, something positive,

0:15:10 > 0:15:12but upstairs...

0:15:12 > 0:15:16- Oh!- Not necessarily this one.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18- This is our bedroom.- Oh, right, OK.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22The master bedroom's not quite what they were expecting.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26This has taken a definite dive.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29I wouldn't particularly like to have my bedroom open to

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- the living room and the kitchen. - No. I think this is a deal breaker,

0:15:33 > 0:15:37- as they say.- We're together in not being keen on this.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41This house probably isn't going to be the one to persuade Paula

0:15:41 > 0:15:45to make the move, but if it falls within their £700,000 budget,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48- could the price change her mind? - I'm thinking 650.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51I'm thinking 650, too, yeah.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Shall we do a drum roll?

0:15:53 > 0:15:54Are you ready?

0:15:59 > 0:16:02It may be £34,000 under budget,

0:16:02 > 0:16:04but the family feel it's overpriced.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Here, we've got not enough bedrooms, less bedrooms, no pool

0:16:07 > 0:16:13and yet, it's still quite expensive. Slightly worrying, so far.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17With property two a disappointment, there's just one more home to view.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Next up is what we believe should be the ideal family home for the Hobbs.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28It's in Warnbro, a quiet coastal suburb 30 miles south of Perth.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32Flanked by beautiful beaches, the area has a nearby nature reserve,

0:16:32 > 0:16:35perfectly suited to outdoor activities.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39- So it could be the perfect spot for the family.- Oh, crikey!

0:16:39 > 0:16:43Look what I can see over there. Just go on your tippy-toes.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46- I think it's going to be expensive. - I think it is.- Yeah.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48- Gosh.- Wow!- My goodness.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51That's not a disappointing start.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- This is what I would want.- This is beautiful. Really, really nice.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57This five-bedroom house has the wow factor,

0:16:57 > 0:17:01but George is already worried it will also have a price to match.

0:17:01 > 0:17:05A fantastic place, right next to the beach. It's going to be expensive.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08And it's even got a pool and it's still right next to the beach.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Which is the double whammy, isn't it?

0:17:11 > 0:17:13You don't normally get both, do you, eh?

0:17:13 > 0:17:16The larder's got Paula in a spin.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19I get excited about places I can put all my food.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24- And the kitchen impresses, too. - Wow, look at this kitchen.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27No, it is, it's beautiful. It's lovely, it's absolutely gorgeous.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29I think this could be a boy's room in here.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32- This would be Eddie's room. - This could be Eddie's room.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34Eddie, look at the view from Eddie's room.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37Eddie's got a room with a perfect view.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40It would be really, really good. Like, open the door.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45This is like a holiday villa that we would go to in Portugal

0:17:45 > 0:17:48- or somewhere.- Well, nicer. - We'd actually be living in it.

0:17:48 > 0:17:49To actually be living in it, yeah.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52And it's not in Portugal, it's in Australia, which is far better.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55So far, this architect-designed house is living up

0:17:55 > 0:17:58to expectations of a dream home.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00And outside doesn't disappoint, either.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Oh-ho! Look at this.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07This is beautiful. Aw!

0:18:07 > 0:18:10You feel like you're in paradise, really.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14This is really, really beautiful. You do feel that you're in paradise.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17The house has been deliberately positioned in dunes, to shelter

0:18:17 > 0:18:20the outdoors from any sea breeze in the summer.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25- Oh, Frankie, look at that.- You can imagine just diving in there.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Look at the back of the house. It's absolutely beautiful, isn't it?

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Yeah, never mind millions of dollars, it must be

0:18:31 > 0:18:33- well over a million pounds. - Well over a million pounds.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36Upstairs continues to impress.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Ah! Look at that view!

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Whoa!

0:18:41 > 0:18:46This is just gorgeous. Listen to that. Look at that.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48I thought it was about one million, now I'm thinking more like two.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- Two million.- With that view.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55This house could definitely be worth making the move for.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57- This is it. - This is it. This is... Yeah.

0:18:57 > 0:19:01This is the style of living that we would absolutely aspire to.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04It's fabulous.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08But will their £700,000 budget be enough to cover the cost?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11This is just out of this world.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14And it is, more or less, perfect for us,

0:19:14 > 0:19:16but it's also going to be way over our budget.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18- Because that is what we've dreamed of.- Yeah.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22So... This is really quite exciting. Evie, turn it over.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33- Oh, my...- £846,000.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35What?!

0:19:35 > 0:19:38It may be £146,000 over budget,

0:19:38 > 0:19:43but it's still a lot less than everyone was expecting.

0:19:43 > 0:19:48I am gobsmacked, because that is unbelievable, for a house like this.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52- You almost think we could do that. - Yeah, you do.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Oh, I definitely, definitely, seriously would consider going back

0:19:55 > 0:19:58to work, if we could afford a house like this.

0:19:58 > 0:20:05In a place like this, which, actually, we probably could...

0:20:05 > 0:20:09Their day exploring the Perth property market has been a real

0:20:09 > 0:20:12eye-opener for George and Paula. Property number one

0:20:12 > 0:20:17proved a hit, indoors and out, but was just slightly over budget.

0:20:17 > 0:20:22House number two had plenty of character, but too many windows

0:20:22 > 0:20:24and a bedroom too open plan.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27House number three was a showstopper and, though it had a price to match,

0:20:27 > 0:20:31Paula felt it could be somewhere worth working for.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33So, when it comes to properties,

0:20:33 > 0:20:36will the family vote for Australia or the UK?

0:20:36 > 0:20:40We've looked at three very different houses and it's now time for us

0:20:40 > 0:20:41to vote.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52ALL: Australia!

0:20:52 > 0:20:56- Why did you vote for Australia? - Because I like it.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59After that last house, I'm not surprised that we voted Australia.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02It is attainable, what we want. We've realised that today.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04We've still got some big steps to make,

0:21:04 > 0:21:08but property wise, definitely...boxes ticked.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13There may be big steps yet to make, but a full house of votes

0:21:13 > 0:21:16for Aus is definitely one in the right direction for George.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27George has been dreaming of a life in Australia for over 40 years.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29But to turn it into a reality,

0:21:29 > 0:21:32it's crucial the right job prospects exist.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36Back in the UK, he's been a GP for the past 20 years.

0:21:36 > 0:21:37I love my job.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I know all my patients very well. A lot of them are friends

0:21:40 > 0:21:43and that bit of it's great.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46But the admin side of the job means George hasn't as much time

0:21:46 > 0:21:48for his patients as he'd like.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51I am always pressed for time in the UK,

0:21:51 > 0:21:53because of the pressure of the job.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57The job in Australia has got to be right. It needs the right salary.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Most importantly, of all,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02it needs to fit into the life that we're hoping to lead out there.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07To find out if that's possible in Australia,

0:22:07 > 0:22:11he's spending the day at Floreat Medical Practice in Perth,

0:22:11 > 0:22:14where he's met by Dr Rosanna Capolingua.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Welcome to Floreat Medical. Nice to see you here.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18- Shall we show you around? - Yeah, please.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24OK, we actually have an on-site pathology collection centre, as well.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27If I have an urgent specimen, it can be taken straight away,

0:22:27 > 0:22:30gets sent off straight away and I can have results within a few hours.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33- It's very efficient.- Well, that's a lot better than England, yeah.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37George is impressed and is keen to find out more.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40- As I understand it, this is your practice.- It is.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43- The buck stops with me. The bottom line stops with me.- Yeah.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46One of the things I'm looking to move away from is having

0:22:46 > 0:22:49all that responsibility of running the practice alone.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51In that case, you can come and work for me and I'd have

0:22:51 > 0:22:52all the responsibility,

0:22:52 > 0:22:55and all you'd need to do is look after patients.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58And my role is to make sure that you have an environment

0:22:58 > 0:23:00that you can look after patients the very best can.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03How long do you get to see each patient?

0:23:03 > 0:23:07Each doctor can do whatever they feel they need to do for the patient

0:23:07 > 0:23:10- and for the patient's needs. - Sounds absolutely ideal for me.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14George would ideally reduce his working hours Down Under,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16but needs to know if that's a possibility.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20So, if I say that I'm looking to work 30 hours...

0:23:20 > 0:23:24My two major income earners here would work about 30 hours a week

0:23:24 > 0:23:28and they would take home 340,000-350,000 a year.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Easily.

0:23:30 > 0:23:31Right.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36Which is about £200,000, which is more than double

0:23:36 > 0:23:41what I earn in England, working 40 hours a week, so...

0:23:41 > 0:23:44- That's OK.- And in this beautiful environment.- Yeah.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46And with a beautiful-sounding job as well,

0:23:46 > 0:23:47where you can actually DO the job.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51And they don't have to do the administration. No red tape.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55- That's very interesting, thank you.- My pleasure.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58'It's a fantastic result for George.'

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Still thinking of their dream home,

0:24:00 > 0:24:04Paula's now considering a return to work, if a move went ahead.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08With me working and adding to the family income, I think that

0:24:08 > 0:24:13would go a long way towards helping us get house that we really love.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15Back in the UK, she worked as a nurse

0:24:15 > 0:24:16before the children came along.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19So we've arranged for her to meet with Louise McInnis,

0:24:19 > 0:24:21a fellow practise nurse, to find out what

0:24:21 > 0:24:23the job would entail Down Under.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Most practice nurses here work part-time.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30It's really good for a family, because you don't have to do

0:24:30 > 0:24:33shift work, you don't have to do night shifts, that sort of thing.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36That's the kind of thing I was doing back in the UK.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40It would give me time to spend with the children.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Paula's keen to know if her specialist skills

0:24:42 > 0:24:45would stand her in good stead in Australia.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46Since my speciality...

0:24:46 > 0:24:51I've done training diabetes and I also did a course in sexual health.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54I think, obviously, if you've got those skills in those areas,

0:24:54 > 0:24:57that would be really beneficial to getting a job and you'd be

0:24:57 > 0:25:00a more attractive nurse for us, because you'd be able to run

0:25:00 > 0:25:01clinics and things like that.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04That's a real plus for me, so, yeah, thanks for that, that's great.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Just one more question left.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10What is the current salary for a practice nurse?

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Probably around 55,000, you'd start on,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15which is probably around £33,000.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18And then, it would go up from there, with experience.

0:25:18 > 0:25:19That's absolutely brilliant.

0:25:19 > 0:25:25That's quite a lot more than a senior nurse would be on in the UK.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27That's really great news.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29'It's been an encouraging visit for Paula,

0:25:29 > 0:25:34'but she's completely staggered when she hears George's news.'

0:25:34 > 0:25:36- For 30 hours?- For 30 hours.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39- £200,000 for 30 hours?- Yep.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41That is so much more than I thought.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44That is double, and more, what I'm earning now.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47- What you're earning now with... - For less work.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50- For less work, less stress. - And better work.- Crikey.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53You must have nearly fallen on the floor when you heard that.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57I didn't fall on the floor, no. But I nearly did!

0:25:57 > 0:26:00- And I was definitely very surprised.- Right, right. Hey!

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Give me a high-five.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07It looks like the outcome of this vote's already clear.

0:26:07 > 0:26:08Australia.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14No surprises there, then. Given the salaries.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18- I'm not surprised. How could you do anything else? Yeah.- So that is...

0:26:18 > 0:26:22..that's a real nail in the coffin of the UK today.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25Because the job and the salary

0:26:25 > 0:26:27and the whole work/life balance for both of us.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31- For both of us, yeah. - No questions asked.- No, brilliant.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42Paula's second vote for Australia is another massive boost

0:26:42 > 0:26:44for George's dream.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46But, there's still work to be done

0:26:46 > 0:26:50if he is to convince her to move halfway around the world.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Could a day out experiencing some of what Perth's got to offer

0:26:53 > 0:26:58bring his vision of the family's future one step closer?

0:26:58 > 0:27:02Their day starts with a visit to Cohunu Koala Park, where the

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- family get up close to some native wildlife.- Is that lovely, Eddie?

0:27:05 > 0:27:08- Does it feel really lovely, holding it?- It's like a sheep.

0:27:08 > 0:27:13I think she's so cute. She is so soft and fuzzy.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16It's a dream come true for George.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19These are my favourite animals in Australia. There they are.

0:27:19 > 0:27:21Look at them. They're like a big hedgehog.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25- They are cute, actually, aren't they? Look at their noses.- They are fab.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27Keen to explore George's great-grandfather's

0:27:27 > 0:27:28legacy on the city,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31the family make their way to the State War Memorial,

0:27:31 > 0:27:35designed by Sir Joseph John Talbot Hobbs himself.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38For George, it's a proud moment.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41This was put up for the First World War remembrance, Eddie.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44It's amazing, isn't it?

0:27:44 > 0:27:47This is to remind the people of Perth about all the people

0:27:47 > 0:27:48who went and didn't come back.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51And, at long last, George comes face-to-face

0:27:51 > 0:27:54with the statue of his great-grandfather.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57There is the sword, there's the medals.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00There he is. It's absolutely vast, isn't it?

0:28:00 > 0:28:03It's a day he thought would never come...

0:28:03 > 0:28:05Ever since I was a little boy, I've dreamt of coming here

0:28:05 > 0:28:08and I've dreamt of standing in front of his statue

0:28:08 > 0:28:09and here I am, which is...

0:28:11 > 0:28:14It's been a long time coming. Too long.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17..and he's overcome by the occasion.

0:28:17 > 0:28:18I am...

0:28:20 > 0:28:22I'm feeling emotional.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27This is your history, right in front of you.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31Your great-great-grandfather up there

0:28:31 > 0:28:35was a big part of Perth's early history.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43The day has been a reminder of why George feels

0:28:43 > 0:28:45Australia should be his home.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49I think having seen the memorial and knowing that he designed that,

0:28:49 > 0:28:51I feel very proud.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53And a sense of belonging as well

0:28:53 > 0:28:56because it's part of my family's heritage and it's also

0:28:56 > 0:28:59part of Perth's heritage and the two are intertwined.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02Exploring the city has also had a positive effect on Paula...

0:29:02 > 0:29:06It's amazing here. It's beautiful. Would be a fantastic place to live.

0:29:06 > 0:29:10..but she can't help thinking of who she has left behind in the UK.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13It's such a long way from home and to leave everything that

0:29:13 > 0:29:15I have known at home to come over here...

0:29:16 > 0:29:19And there are many good reasons to do that.

0:29:19 > 0:29:22It will be a very difficult decision. Really difficult.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25George knows he's still got a battle to fight.

0:29:25 > 0:29:29I think the task of convincing Paula is going really well,

0:29:29 > 0:29:32but there are still a couple of really big hurdles.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36Based on lifestyle, though, will the family vault home or away?

0:29:36 > 0:29:38After a quality day with the animals and seeing

0:29:38 > 0:29:41my great-great-grandfather's statue, it's now time to vote.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48ALL: Australia!

0:29:48 > 0:29:52I voted Australia because you couldn't see

0:29:52 > 0:29:55- koalas and kangaroos in England. - No, you couldn't.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59- You couldn't see any of those animals.- And you couldn't feed them.

0:29:59 > 0:30:03It's been a fun day and a really emotional day at the same time.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06To see George in front of his great-grandfather's

0:30:06 > 0:30:10statue like that, it was such an important moment.

0:30:12 > 0:30:14It's great. I'm really happy for him.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24It's been a landmark day for George

0:30:24 > 0:30:28and a future in Australia could be shaping up to be a certainty.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31But achieving the perfect life Down Under will come at a cost.

0:30:31 > 0:30:36So getting the right price for the family home in the UK will be key.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39George and Paula think it's worth £650,000.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42Will two local estate agents agree?

0:30:43 > 0:30:46The setting is beautiful.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48There are trees, lots of space.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50A great place to have chickens.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52The chickens are on!

0:30:52 > 0:30:54Very, very nice.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58Very nice, very welcoming entrance hallway. Beautiful floor.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00Very good first impression.

0:31:02 > 0:31:06Smart. A very cosy sitting room. Beautiful place. Road noise.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09You can definitely hear the road from this room,

0:31:09 > 0:31:11obviously being on the external wall there.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13But other than that, a great space.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15He's mentioned the road.

0:31:18 > 0:31:22Lovely kitchen. Some interesting features up there.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Lovely. I would have thought that fireplace was original.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27Doesn't the house look nice?

0:31:29 > 0:31:32- Hooray!.- Who is that?!

0:31:32 > 0:31:35A little lad's bedroom.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38- Hey!- Brilliant. Again, good size.

0:31:38 > 0:31:41All the rooms in the property seem to be a good size.

0:31:41 > 0:31:46Original fireplace and nice big, wide floorboards. Charming stuff.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53Interesting toilet seat! A lovely big bath though.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57You would never get me out of there!

0:31:58 > 0:32:02OK. Obviously, the smallest bedroom, but by modern standards...

0:32:02 > 0:32:04It is the smallest.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06..most people would be quite happy with this.

0:32:06 > 0:32:10It still has nice features. The original beams. No, very smart room.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12- Does that make you pang for home? - Does it?

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Does it make you want to go back? No.

0:32:17 > 0:32:18So, master bedroom.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23Very nice. A very charming room. Very nice place.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30The front garden is beautiful. Very well stocked.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33Obviously, well looked after by the owners.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37The summer house is a beautiful feature. Yes, it works a treat.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42This is a beautiful five bedroom farmhouse in a wonderful location.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44In the current market,

0:32:44 > 0:32:48I would recommend an asking price of £575,000.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52For a quick sale, £550,000.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54All right, so it's a beautiful farmhouse in a lovely area.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56In the current market,

0:32:56 > 0:32:59I would advertise this property for £600,000.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01If the family were looking for a quick sale,

0:33:01 > 0:33:03I would recommend £575,000.

0:33:03 > 0:33:08The valuations are around £50,000 lower than expected, but...

0:33:08 > 0:33:11I think, given the news we got about salaries the other day,

0:33:11 > 0:33:13it's less bad news than it would have been.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16- We will probably end up selling it for 575.- I think we will.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20Unless somebody comes and loves it because of the quirkiness of it,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22we may get a bit more for it.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25But we'll see. I am not selling it for nothing.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28Now it's time to tackle the cost of everyday living.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I think it's going to be a lot more expensive to live here

0:33:31 > 0:33:32than in England, but we'll see.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34- Shall we see?- We might as well.- OK.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37We've provided a comparison of living costs

0:33:37 > 0:33:39in Australia and the UK.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41First up is the weekly supermarket shop.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44What's that? Chicken.

0:33:44 > 0:33:49- Chicken.- And ham. Much, much cheaper. - Much cheaper.- Much cheaper.

0:33:49 > 0:33:54A huge difference there. Avocados. Double the price.

0:33:54 > 0:33:59- Yes, I noticed they were expensive in the shop the other day.- £28.18.

0:33:59 > 0:34:03That's the difference. More expensive here by £28.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06An extra £28 a week on food won't break the bank,

0:34:06 > 0:34:10but what about the family's bigger outgoings, such as a mortgage?

0:34:10 > 0:34:14Basing their figures on the dream property they saw...

0:34:16 > 0:34:19- 4,210.- That mortgage figure is huge.

0:34:19 > 0:34:23It's more than double what we pay now.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26It's an enormous increase.

0:34:26 > 0:34:27So on a monthly basis,

0:34:27 > 0:34:31how much more would the couple be spending in Australia?

0:34:31 > 0:34:35It's 2,456.72.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43- But that is for that fab house. - That's for the fab house.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47It's a massive amount of money

0:34:47 > 0:34:50but George could earn twice as much in Australia

0:34:50 > 0:34:53and with Paula also working full-time,

0:34:53 > 0:34:57could their potential earning power Down Under turn things around?'

0:34:57 > 0:35:03£51,231 and 36 pennies

0:35:03 > 0:35:07a year better off in Australia.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11- After tax.- After tax. Dear me.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17That's amazing, isn't it? It's very tempting, isn't it?

0:35:17 > 0:35:20- Look at you. - It's hard to resist, is that.

0:35:20 > 0:35:21- Never mind tempting. - It certainly is.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23That's got to be a record.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26- That is a life-changing...- It is.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28..difference.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32If our family saw that, who could resist that?

0:35:32 > 0:35:34- That's one big reason to come. - Who could resist that?

0:35:34 > 0:35:36It's all too good to be true,

0:35:36 > 0:35:40the goodness that is coming out of Australia, isn't it, really?

0:35:40 > 0:35:43- It is but it isn't because it is true.- Yes.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46And these figures are fab.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50No prizes for guessing how this vote turns out.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52It's time to vote.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57BOTH: Australia.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01I think that's getting to be a bit of a habit, isn't it?

0:36:01 > 0:36:03We couldn't have voted any other way, could we?

0:36:03 > 0:36:08We would have been carted off if we had voted for England, I think!

0:36:08 > 0:36:11- Based on money.- It's great news. - It's definite Australia.

0:36:16 > 0:36:20With Paula's fourth vote for Australia, George's lifelong

0:36:20 > 0:36:22dream could be within grasp.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25But a move across the world would mean breaking close bonds

0:36:25 > 0:36:27with loved ones in the UK.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30And for Paula, the prospect of saying goodbye to her mum

0:36:30 > 0:36:32could prove too much to bear.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35We've prepared a DVD of messages from friends

0:36:35 > 0:36:37and family back in the UK.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40The family have decided to watch it together.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43Hello, everyone. It's Mum. As you can see.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48Hello George, Paula, Evie and Eddie.

0:36:48 > 0:36:50Hi, Paula and George. All right?

0:36:50 > 0:36:53Dad, Paula, Eddie and Evie, I hope you're having a great time

0:36:53 > 0:36:54and I hope the sun is shining.

0:36:54 > 0:37:00Paula is a real fun character. She can be really fiery.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02So, she gets that from my dad.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05Paula has a really strong relationship with her mum.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16I said I wasn't going to do this.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19Come on. Pull yourself together, Mum.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22I love her to bits.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24I'm really close to Dad.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26I always say that he is one of my best friends,

0:37:26 > 0:37:30so I think if he goes away, it would be quite difficult for me.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33And not being part of it will be quite...

0:37:33 > 0:37:35It would be quite hard.

0:37:36 > 0:37:40Whenever Paula talks about it, I'm always positive to her.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43But she knows how I feel about the family

0:37:43 > 0:37:45and how I would miss them all.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48But I never say to her... I think I might have done.

0:37:48 > 0:37:52I might have said to her, "Don't go. I hope you hate it!"

0:37:52 > 0:37:54Yes, you've said that, Mother!

0:37:54 > 0:37:57But I would never ask them not to go. No.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02Just thinking about it is awful.

0:38:02 > 0:38:06I can only wish you every good wish.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09And a happy, healthy life

0:38:09 > 0:38:13and that you thoroughly enjoy it and become true Australians.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18If you go away and have this new life, it will be so difficult for me

0:38:18 > 0:38:20to stay as close to you as I am now

0:38:20 > 0:38:25and that's something which is so important to me, our relationship.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29It's just something I don't want to lose,

0:38:29 > 0:38:32so I don't really want you to go, if I'm totally honest.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39I find it very difficult.

0:38:41 > 0:38:46But whatever your decision is, I just hope you make the right

0:38:46 > 0:38:48one for you and your family and all the children.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52I hope it's right for you all.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57But if it isn't right for you all, come back home.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59Because I miss you so much.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12I knew this would get you.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16It's all right. It's OK.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20It certainly gets you in the heart a little bit, as a father.

0:39:20 > 0:39:22I'm sure it got all of us, a little bit.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25You are just being pulled in two directions.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28Because it's been Australia all along the way, it has.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Every time, it's been Australia, Australia, Australia.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34But always in the back of my mind, home has always been there.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36Massively.

0:39:36 > 0:39:43We haven't come the last ten years because of these sort of issues.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46In the end, we have to make a decision.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50And that isn't an easy one.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55The reality of emigrating can be hard to face

0:39:55 > 0:39:59and messages from home have affected the family deeply.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02After a lifetime of dreaming,

0:40:02 > 0:40:06Australia has surpassed all of George's expectations.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09And knowing how much better off they would be Down Under

0:40:09 > 0:40:13has convinced him even more where his family should be.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15But for Paula, breaking the close bond

0:40:15 > 0:40:18she has with her mother could be a step too far.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21As the final vote approaches, could hearing how much

0:40:21 > 0:40:25they will be missed have put an end to George's dream?

0:40:26 > 0:40:30The trial week's been a culmination of decades of anticipation...

0:40:30 > 0:40:35It's been worth the wait, because it is everything I had hoped for.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39And, in fact, much, much better. I feel totally at home here.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42..and has opened Paula's eyes to the kind of life

0:40:42 > 0:40:43they could have Down Under.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46Australia has got a massive amount to offer me,

0:40:46 > 0:40:50George and us as a family and Jack.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54I love Australia and if it was simple, I would be here.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58But it's not simple. Knowing what they would be leaving behind

0:40:58 > 0:41:00has left both Paula and George torn.

0:41:00 > 0:41:05I think for me, personally, John, my son, hearing him talking

0:41:05 > 0:41:08and on behalf of Mads, as well, was difficult.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12I don't know what's going to happen.

0:41:12 > 0:41:15I'm not sure which way I'm going to...

0:41:16 > 0:41:18I'm going to vote.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21It would be terribly easy to just stick a vote up for Australia

0:41:21 > 0:41:24because I love it, but I'm really trying to think,

0:41:24 > 0:41:27"No, this isn't just about saying where would you like to be.

0:41:27 > 0:41:30"It's saying, what are you actually going to do?"

0:41:30 > 0:41:33It's been a make or break week for George and it's now time to vote.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35After 40 years,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39his lifelong dream rests on the final turn of the cards.

0:41:39 > 0:41:45After a wonderful week, it is now time for us to do our final vote.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00- Undecided.- Undecided.- Australia.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03I've got a family of ditherers!

0:42:03 > 0:42:06I voted undecided, because I would miss all the people at home.

0:42:06 > 0:42:10And I would miss the lifestyle here.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14- I voted undecided because I watched that video.- Is that why?

0:42:14 > 0:42:18- Did it just make you sad? Yes? - Why did you vote for Australia?

0:42:19 > 0:42:23I voted for Australia because, for us, as a family,

0:42:23 > 0:42:27I think the opportunities here are just too good to turn down.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29So, that is why I voted for Australia. For our family.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31I agree with everything you've said,

0:42:31 > 0:42:35but it's just there are big issues to sort out back home.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Big issues. That is why I voted undecided.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41Because I really am undecided, with regards to family.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44I'm not disappointed, at all. Undecided is not no.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48So, the dream is definitely not over of coming, for any of us.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51I am probably more than 50% confident that we will be here

0:42:51 > 0:42:53in a few years...or a bit of time.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04It's far from the result George had been hoping for,

0:43:04 > 0:43:08but he has not given up on his dream just yet.

0:43:08 > 0:43:09Who knows?

0:43:09 > 0:43:12After a short spell at home he may be able to find a way

0:43:12 > 0:43:16to make the move work for everyone.

0:43:16 > 0:43:19Whatever happens next, we wish the Hobbs every happiness.
