0:00:02 > 0:00:03If you were finally reunited

0:00:03 > 0:00:05after work meant you'd spent months

0:00:05 > 0:00:07separated from your partner,

0:00:07 > 0:00:10you could be forgiven for wanting the very best from life,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14but what if one of you believes your future lies on the other side

0:00:14 > 0:00:19of the world and the other feels the answer is much closer to home?

0:00:19 > 0:00:23For the last five years, Karen Dennett spent ten months

0:00:23 > 0:00:26of the year effectively living as a single parent.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30I just... I'm worn-out, to be honest. I'm just exhausted.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Husband Wayne knows things have got to change.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36If we were to continue working at this pace,

0:00:36 > 0:00:38it could be quite detrimental to our family.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41But while Karen believes the future lies down under...

0:00:41 > 0:00:45It's just amazing, really. I don't think I would ever get bored with it.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48..Wayne has his mind set on settling somewhere else.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50First impressions of Australia, fantastic,

0:00:50 > 0:00:53but saying that, Cornwall is fantastic as well.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18In the last 70 years more than six million people have

0:01:18 > 0:01:21moved across the globe to settle in Australia.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25And with 80% of the population living within a half-hour drive

0:01:25 > 0:01:28from the beach, it's easy to understand why.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32The country's sun, sea and laid-back lifestyle all add up to

0:01:32 > 0:01:36a powerful draw to those seeking a new life abroad.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Left alone for months at a time to bring up a family

0:01:39 > 0:01:44and work a full-time job, Karen Dennett has reached breaking point.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Husband Wayne agrees things need to change,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49but the couple have very different ideas

0:01:49 > 0:01:52on where their new life should lie.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53Over the next week,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56they'll experience everything Australia has to offer

0:01:56 > 0:01:59before deciding once and for all

0:01:59 > 0:02:02if they should make the move there for good.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07The 9,000-mile journey from Bristol has seen the Dennetts spend 19 hours

0:02:07 > 0:02:11in the air and as the family touchdown in Perth,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13there are, let's say, mixed reactions.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22The flight wasn't as bad as what we thought it was going to be.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26The food was barf.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28The flight was very long.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31It's Karen's first time on Australian soil.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I'm really excited. Can't wait to get out there

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and see what it's got to offer.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38But Wayne's heart is still firmly set back home.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41I'm still sure we can achieve everything that we've been

0:02:41 > 0:02:44looking forward to for the last 15, 20 years in Cornwall

0:02:44 > 0:02:46and not Australia.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Karen's got her work cut out in the week ahead

0:02:49 > 0:02:52if she is to persuade Wayne Australia's the perfect place

0:02:52 > 0:02:53for their family.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59The Dennetts hail from Bristol.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03They are dad Wayne, Harry who's two, mum Karen,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Jack age eight and Millie who's ten.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Former soldier Wayne has spent the last five years

0:03:10 > 0:03:12working in Afghanistan.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15The reason why I work abroad is, obviously, for the money

0:03:15 > 0:03:20the financial reason and also given my previous military experience,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24there's not a lot of call for what I do within the UK.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28While Wayne's job pays well, it means for ten months of the year,

0:03:28 > 0:03:32mum Karen's been left alone trying to juggle a hectic work life

0:03:32 > 0:03:35as a teacher with bringing up three children.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Being on my own without Wayne is a bit like being a single parent.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40It is tough.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Karen is quite literally run off of her feet.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45She is up at six o'clock every day, regardless.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Looking after the children

0:03:47 > 0:03:49till about seven or eight o'clock at night

0:03:49 > 0:03:51and then she still got marking

0:03:51 > 0:03:54and quite often she's up till one or two o'clock in the morning.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57To be honest it with you, I do not know how she does it.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Oh! You going to go down on the slide?

0:04:00 > 0:04:04Snatching just five hours' sleep a night has taken its toll.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07I just... I'm worn out to be honest.

0:04:07 > 0:04:12I'm just exhausted. I want to have a life again.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15While Karen's been missing out on sleep,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17working more than 3,000 miles away

0:04:17 > 0:04:20means Wayne's missed out on being a father.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23You tend to miss out on a lot. I mean, Harry was...

0:04:23 > 0:04:25You know he's only a year and a half old.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28And I've missed out on pretty much all of that.

0:04:28 > 0:04:29In the ten weeks...

0:04:29 > 0:04:31when he's not here,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34I can't remember him sometimes.

0:04:34 > 0:04:39I'd like to see my dad a bit more cos like Skype you can't really...

0:04:39 > 0:04:41You're not really seeing them in person.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45- 'I love you.'- Bye!- 'Have fun.' - Thank you.- 'Bye.'- Bye.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It's definitely about time to change.

0:04:47 > 0:04:53I'm fed up with having a marriage that is based on video link.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56The family have decided enough is enough

0:04:56 > 0:04:59and after handing in his notice, today's the last time

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Wayne will be met by them after months working away.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Oh, there he is! Look!

0:05:14 > 0:05:19If we were to continue for another, say, year or two years

0:05:19 > 0:05:21working at this pace, especially Karen,

0:05:21 > 0:05:23it could be quite detrimental to our family.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26We're going to have to go to the lift.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30Now the couple are desperate to be a real family once more.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34I want to have a life again

0:05:34 > 0:05:38and, you know, be able to do things as a family all the time -

0:05:38 > 0:05:41the day-to-day stuff, not just the holidays.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45The children are growing up far too quickly and I'm missing all of it.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Karen is adamant Australia is the solution.

0:05:49 > 0:05:54The main reasons for going are firstly to get in the sunshine,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57to give the kids an amazing experience.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Like to open their eyes up to the world.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03To actually be able to go out and do things as a family.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06I would really like to work part-time

0:06:06 > 0:06:10and be able to spend some good time with the kids.

0:06:10 > 0:06:16And I want to step back a bit and enjoy my life.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19But Wayne, who grew up in South West England,

0:06:19 > 0:06:23believes the answer lies much closer to home.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25I'd prefer to move to Cornwell. It's not such a gamble.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28We can achieve everything that we're...

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Karen wants to achieve in Australia quite easily.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And moving to Australia could be a massive risk

0:06:35 > 0:06:38given none of the family have actually been.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40We have no idea. We've only seen pictures

0:06:40 > 0:06:42and we've only got other people's accounts of it.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47And it sounds amazing, but we need to get that experience ourselves.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51The couple aren't underestimating the importance of the week

0:06:51 > 0:06:52that lies ahead.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56This is one of the most difficult decisions that we will make ever

0:06:56 > 0:06:58for the children's future.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Are they going to be better off in England or Australia?

0:07:02 > 0:07:07I have to convince Wayne that it's worth trying and, you know,

0:07:07 > 0:07:09if we can do that this week,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12then I think, you know, we could be up there by next year.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16After years of separation for months at a time,

0:07:16 > 0:07:19the Dennetts have already taken steps to gain more time together.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Now the only question that remains

0:07:21 > 0:07:23is where in the world they'll spend it.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38The Dennetts will be spending their trial week in Perth,

0:07:38 > 0:07:42capital of Western Australia. It's a vibrant, energetic city.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45And with an average of eight hours of sunshine every day,

0:07:45 > 0:07:49there's plenty of time to enjoy its 26 parks and reserves.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Home for the week is the popular coastal suburb of Mandurah,

0:07:53 > 0:07:5645 miles north of the city centre.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58First impressions of the four-bedroom town house

0:07:58 > 0:08:00are promising.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03- Oh, this is lovely! - This is nice, isn't it?

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Wow! Look at this, Harry.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09And upstairs lies a small hint of the lifestyle

0:08:09 > 0:08:10the Dennetts could be enjoying.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Wow! What a lovely view.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Oh, I love the surfboard table.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Look at that!

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Nice big outside area.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Wayne's already planning parties.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Can you imagine the amount of sausages I could burn on here?

0:08:27 > 0:08:30And Millie and Jack seem to have settled.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32I feel pretty relaxed.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Karen suspects their accommodation may have already worked

0:08:36 > 0:08:37in their favour.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Wayne's possibly more convinced than I am.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42You know, he's seen the beach and we are opposite,

0:08:42 > 0:08:44and he's like, "Yep, I'm happy."

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Not sure he's been won over quite yet, Karen.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50First impressions of Australia?

0:08:50 > 0:08:54The area we are in now is fantastic, beautiful coastline,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57but saying that, the coastline in Cornwall is fantastic as well.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00But one thing the couple do agree on

0:09:00 > 0:09:03is what's at stake in the week ahead.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05It is a hell of a big decision to make.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10To move, uplift everything, move halfway around the world.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13I think I've had my mind set on it for such a long time

0:09:13 > 0:09:18and I think if we get here and we realise it's not for us,

0:09:18 > 0:09:19then what next?

0:09:30 > 0:09:34Back in the UK, the Dennetts live in a four-bedroom detached house

0:09:34 > 0:09:35near Bristol.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38It's quite a nice house, well, we think it is.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42We've spent a lot of time making it look nice

0:09:42 > 0:09:44and making it our home.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46- If we could have this house... - By the sea.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49..by the sea, it would be perfect.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52They have a budget of £450,000

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and clear ideas about what they'd like from an Aussie home.

0:09:55 > 0:10:00The dream property for us would be four-bedroom house, detached

0:10:00 > 0:10:03with a nice garden or a nice swimming pool

0:10:03 > 0:10:05and very close to the beach.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Open plan, quite modern and a lovely outdoor area.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Karen is determined to find the perfect Antipodean property.

0:10:13 > 0:10:18If we get out there and we can't afford what we want

0:10:18 > 0:10:23in terms of our house, then we'll just have to find better jobs.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28- Which means longer hours working. - No. We will find somewhere.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31If we get out there and we can't afford what we want,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34I would say, possibly, the dream would be over.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Karen's hopes of a move to Australia could rest on finding

0:10:41 > 0:10:43the right property at the right price.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46To give the family an idea of what their money could buy in

0:10:46 > 0:10:49and around Perth, we will show them three homes.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Two on budget and one which should match their vision

0:10:52 > 0:10:54of a dream home.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56House-hunting begins in Mindarie.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59It's a family-friendly, beach-side suburb,

0:10:59 > 0:11:01which could be a perfect area for the Dennetts.

0:11:01 > 0:11:06It's also popular with expats, but property here can be pricey.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10This modern, four-bedroom, two-bathroom home

0:11:10 > 0:11:13is within walking distance of the ocean and as they arrive,

0:11:13 > 0:11:17one family-friendly feature grabs everyone's attention.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19- Oh, my God!- Oh, my God, yeah.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21- That's all right, isn't it? - Oh, look!- Nice pool.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24- Nice, little pool. Wow! - I love the pool.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27Look at that, Harry, you could splash about in that.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29It might be all right for Harry,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32but Wayne can't see himself doing many lengths in it.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34I really like the pool, but it's a bit small, isn't it?

0:11:34 > 0:11:36It is a bit tiny, actually. You'd...

0:11:36 > 0:11:38You jump in in it, you're out of on the other end.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41The pool might be slightly on the small side,

0:11:41 > 0:11:44but will indoors have the space the family want?

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Ooh, this looks nice, doesn't it?

0:11:47 > 0:11:51- Oh, I like this floor. Lovely. JACK:- Very posh.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54That's a good initial reaction.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56This is nice.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01Oh, wow! Interesting... Wow. Bathroom, open with the bedroom.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02See, I'd like a bath like that

0:12:02 > 0:12:05where you can have all the candles around the outside.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07- JACK:- This is epic!

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Well, it's a nice room. I like it.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13The open-plan living area doesn't disappoint.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17- Oh, wow, this is a lovely, open space, isn't it?- Oh, yeah!

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Wow, look at this kitchen, Wayne.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21This is nice. This is beautiful.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24This is the kitchen that I would like.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Wayne, you could do all the cooking.

0:12:26 > 0:12:27Well, if you are working full-time,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30I'll happily cook in here all the time. How about that?

0:12:30 > 0:12:31KAREN LAUGHS

0:12:31 > 0:12:36Wayne would like to surf all day and me work constantly.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39But, I'm slightly... Actually starting to come around to the idea

0:12:39 > 0:12:42to have everything done when I get home.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Beats doing that and everything at home by myself, so...

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Be careful what you wish for, Wayne.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51A really nice space used quite well.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53I do like the open-plan living.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56The Aussie-style design is going down well,

0:12:56 > 0:12:58but they're something missing.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00- There is no TV.- That's good.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03It's not a living room without a TV.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06Just wait and see to you see what's next door, Jack.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Let's have a look. Oh, it's a cinema!

0:13:09 > 0:13:11- Ha-ha!- Wow!- Cool!

0:13:11 > 0:13:13This is funky.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- We can live with a TV. - So, there is a TV, Jack.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18We can live!

0:13:18 > 0:13:20THEY LAUGH

0:13:20 > 0:13:22That's Jack sold.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26And one outdoor luxury's got Millie bubbling with excitement.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27Mum!

0:13:27 > 0:13:31Oh, wow! Look at that! A hot tub!

0:13:31 > 0:13:34OK, this is nice, isn't it? Could you imagine having one of these?

0:13:34 > 0:13:36- JACK & KAREN: Yeah.- No.- No? Why not?

0:13:36 > 0:13:38It's too good to be true.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40You might be right, Millie.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43- It's a nice house. A really good-sized house.- Yeah.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46But the only thing it lacks for me is a decent size swimming pool.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48There might be a big swimming pool nearby.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Not interested in using the local swimming pool.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51I want a swimming pool.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54If we're going to come here it's got to be worthwhile.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56This property's impressed,

0:13:56 > 0:14:00but the pint-size pool means it isn't enough to tempt Wayne.

0:14:00 > 0:14:06But could he be swayed if the price falls within their £450,000 budget?

0:14:06 > 0:14:08- What do you reckon?- Optimistic.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13I think it's going to be about 485,000.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- British?- British, yeah.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17I reckon it's going to be...

0:14:17 > 0:14:19around about 350,000.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- That cheap?- Yes.- You hope.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- I'm worried if it's over, put it that way.- Yeah.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Right. Flip it over then, Jack, let's have a look.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37- Oh, my God!- That's cheaper than I thought.- 430,000.

0:14:37 > 0:14:38That's cheaper than I thought.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40- MILLIE:- We've got to buy this house!

0:14:40 > 0:14:43I don't think that's going to be happening, Millie.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46It may be more affordable than anticipated,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49but this house just doesn't have everything Wayne wants.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53You want to have a swimming pool that you can swim in?

0:14:53 > 0:14:55But also right next to the beach.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58If we're going to do it, make it worthwhile.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Going halfway around the world, you why everything don't you?

0:15:01 > 0:15:03You want it all.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13Wayne's sticking to his guns.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16If Karen's dream is ever to come true,

0:15:16 > 0:15:20the family will need to find a home that satisfies all his needs.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22Will property two deliver?

0:15:22 > 0:15:25It's in Dawesville, home to the largest inland waterway

0:15:25 > 0:15:27in Western Australia.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30With easy access to the ocean and plenty of options

0:15:30 > 0:15:35for outdoor activities, it could be the perfect location for the family.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Will this modern, four-bedroom house win Wayne over?

0:15:39 > 0:15:44- This door's fantastic, isn't it? - Oh, wow! Look at this entrance.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47- Quite bright.- A lovely mirror. And this is a lot...

0:15:47 > 0:15:50- It's more like it.- A lot better. Yeah.- A lot better, yeah.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54- It's nice, isn't it? It's beautiful. - It is pretty. Nice view.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Bathroom's fantastic.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57This is better.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00Wow, look at that in there, Wayne.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04So far, this house is a hit and it's got Wayne thinking.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07I can just imagine when it's 40, 50 degrees,

0:16:07 > 0:16:12I'll be sat in here, air con on, fans going, nice, comfortable.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Wow, look at this! You could sit here for hours.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Just looking at the... Watching the ducks.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24Wow. Look at this, kids! This is fantastic! What a view!

0:16:24 > 0:16:27Wayne may be able to picture this house as a home for,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30but now it's Karen who has doubts.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33It's not a family home. Like there's not a proper garden.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36This is what I would expect like more of a retired couple

0:16:36 > 0:16:38to have as a garden rather than a family.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40But again, you know, this is good.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43You know, it's low-maintenance. There's not much outside.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46There's no grass cos you've got to water it, I suppose.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48This is definitely an older person's house.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51It's nice though. Imagine having something like this every day.

0:16:51 > 0:16:56Karen and Wayne may have different ideas the ideal family home,

0:16:56 > 0:16:58but are they beginning to agree on Australia?

0:16:58 > 0:17:01I'm starting to like the properties more and more as we go through them.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04I think you get a lot more for your money out here.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06I think I'm getting closer to convincing Wayne.

0:17:06 > 0:17:11He definitely is warming up to the idea.

0:17:11 > 0:17:16But at the same time, I think it's got to be right for all of us.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20Karen has reservations about this house,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23but it seems to have worked wonders with Wayne.

0:17:23 > 0:17:28Will it be within reach of their £450,000 budget?

0:17:28 > 0:17:31It is really nice, so I reckon it's on to be more expensive.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34And I'm going to say it's going to be roughly around...

0:17:34 > 0:17:38550, to 600,000 British.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41I'll go 495 to 510.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43If it ends up being that expensive,

0:17:43 > 0:17:48then I think that we definitely wouldn't want to live here.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Where would you like to move then? Cornwall?

0:17:51 > 0:17:53LAUGHING: No. Still here.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56- Right then, you ready?- Yeah. - You think?- Let's have a look.- Ready?

0:17:56 > 0:18:00- Let's see what it's worth.- Go on, then, Millie, flip it over.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02You're joking!

0:18:02 > 0:18:05That's £67,000 under budget.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Oh, my God!

0:18:08 > 0:18:10- I was...- No chance. No chance.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14Well, you know, that price, I think if you put a fence up,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17and made it a little bit more secure for Harry, that it's good.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21That is really cheap. I never would have expected it to be that cheap.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24It might not be the perfect fit for Karen,

0:18:24 > 0:18:27but this property could well have brought her one step closer

0:18:27 > 0:18:30to achieving her dream life down under.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37With Harry looked after by a childminder,

0:18:37 > 0:18:40the family move on to the final property of the day.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43We found what should be the Dennett's dream home,

0:18:43 > 0:18:45offering everything they are looking for.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48It's situated in Secret Harbour.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Located 35 miles south of Perth,

0:18:50 > 0:18:54the area is a bit further from the city centre, but with the ocean

0:18:54 > 0:18:57on the doorstep, it could offer the family a perfect setting.

0:18:57 > 0:19:01Will this modern, six-bedroom family home impress?

0:19:01 > 0:19:05- Oh, Wow! This is nice. - A massive hallway.- I like this.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Oh, my God, this is great.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Now, this is like a nice family area.

0:19:10 > 0:19:15- Oh, kids, look what I can see out there!- Oh, cool.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17- This is beautiful.- A swimming pool. - Now, this gives me...

0:19:17 > 0:19:19That's more like it. That's a good size.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23The pool's got the thumbs-up from Wayne and Jack.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27I can see myself lounging outside in the pool.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29- Could you?- On a float.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34- Well, this is nice.- Huh!

0:19:34 > 0:19:37Ooh, I like this bathroom. It's a lot like our taste, isn't it,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40- in terms of like our shower room at home.- Yeah.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Upstairs is designed to take advantage

0:19:42 > 0:19:45of the property's magnificent views.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47And it doesn't disappoint.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50- This is different. - Oh, my God, this is fantastic!

0:19:50 > 0:19:52- This is beautiful. - I do like this a lot.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55And there's that little balcony that we saw when we walked up.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Normal downstairs, open-plan upstairs.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Oh, my God! This is lush!

0:20:00 > 0:20:03I love this kitchen.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05I absolutely love it.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Karen's completely blown away.

0:20:08 > 0:20:13I can't say that I've actually found a place where I've walked in,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15even in England, where I've walked in

0:20:15 > 0:20:18and up here it's just been like...wow!

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- We could play football in here! - Oh, my God! This is lush!

0:20:21 > 0:20:24- This is lush!- It's huge! - This is lush.- No bath, mind.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26No, I know, but who has a bath in Australia?

0:20:26 > 0:20:27They haven't got enough water.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Not all that is quite right, Karen.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34This house is amazing, Mum. You've got to buy it.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37The whole family can imagine living here.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Oh, wow. Look at that!

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Can you see the mirrors on the wall?

0:20:40 > 0:20:43- This is fantastic.- That's a really good effect, isn't it?

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- This is what we want and what we...- Exactly.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47You know, this would make it worthwhile,

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- making the move to Australia.- Yeah.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53This is exactly what I was looking for.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55- JACK:- Are we going to buy it today?

0:20:55 > 0:20:59Nice try, Jack. The pool is, for once, perfect.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00Oh, now this is lovely, isn't it?

0:21:00 > 0:21:03- See, you could get a least three strokes on this one, Wayne.- Yeah.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I mean, look at the house from the outside, it's fantastic, isn't it?

0:21:06 > 0:21:10If this was the right price, I would quite happily go home,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12put the house on the market tomorrow.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Karen seems confident the move could be a done deal.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19But will the price bring her back down to earth with a bump?

0:21:19 > 0:21:23What we see here is going to be really important into whether or not

0:21:23 > 0:21:27you can get this, sort of like, the dream in Australia.

0:21:27 > 0:21:28Well, this is the dream.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31If this house is way over our budget,

0:21:31 > 0:21:34I would be very disappointed.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36- Right, should we have a look? MILLIE:- Yeah.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Put ourselves out of our misery.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41I have a feeling it's going to be massive.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51- Yeah.- Yeah. MILLIE:- Goodbye.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55That's £193,000 over budget.

0:21:55 > 0:22:00- No chance?- No chance.- No chance. Absolutely not. Oh, well.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02- It defeats the object. - That's ridiculous.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05That would be like a 250 grand mortgage, at least.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09But Karen's not giving up on the dream home just yet.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13I don't think a teaching job full-time will cover the cost

0:22:13 > 0:22:16of a mortgage here and living expenses.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18You would have to get a job in like Perth

0:22:18 > 0:22:20and you could do that Monday to Friday.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23That would be better than working abroad.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25- We're still in the same time zone.- Yeah.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28That's a good start straight away, isn't it?

0:22:28 > 0:22:30It's all going to be down to your job now.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31I'm really sorry about this,

0:22:31 > 0:22:33but it's basically down to you.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37Australian properties could have seen Wayne turn the tide

0:22:37 > 0:22:39when it comes to a life down under.

0:22:39 > 0:22:44House number one was almost perfect, but the pool was more for paddling.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47The second property won Wayne round,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50but was reminiscent of retirement for Karen.

0:22:50 > 0:22:56House number three had it all, but unfortunately a hefty price tag too.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58So when it comes to Aussie homes,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01will the family vote for the UK or down under?

0:23:01 > 0:23:05Based on the properties we've seen today, our vote today is...

0:23:13 > 0:23:14JACK AND KAREN: Australia!

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Undecided.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18I expected to be undecided, but...

0:23:18 > 0:23:22- What about you, Millie?- The Australia houses are really good,

0:23:22 > 0:23:24but like it kind of depends on where they are.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27I think the properties are nicer here.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29I mean, we've got to have a look at jobs,

0:23:29 > 0:23:34job prospects, and see what we can expect to earn in Australia.

0:23:34 > 0:23:39If we want to achieve that dream, then it would mean I would end up

0:23:39 > 0:23:42working full-time again and that's not the whole point.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44- It's to spend... - BABY COOS

0:23:44 > 0:23:46The move is to spend more time with Karen and the kids.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Isn't it, Harry? Yeah!

0:23:57 > 0:24:01With Wayne unprepared to sacrifice precious family time

0:24:01 > 0:24:03to afford the Aussie dream home,

0:24:03 > 0:24:06finding out what exactly the career and salary opportunities

0:24:06 > 0:24:11are down under will be crucial if Karen's dream's stay alive.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17Back in the UK, Karen teaches business studies,

0:24:17 > 0:24:21but juggling family and teaching duties has been tough.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Every night, I have to do some sort of work to be able to...

0:24:25 > 0:24:30just to keep up, really. Just to sort of keep my head above water.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32I've actually worked right through the night

0:24:32 > 0:24:35till about 5.00 in the morning and you know, it's just...

0:24:35 > 0:24:37I just feel exhausted.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Wayne's just resigned as deputy site manager

0:24:42 > 0:24:45for a fuel company in Afghanistan,

0:24:45 > 0:24:49but is hoping for a similar position, just closer to his family.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53It'd be great if I could continue this line of work

0:24:53 > 0:24:55and also be living with my family.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Today, the couple are setting off

0:24:57 > 0:25:01to explore what job opportunities could await them in Perth.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05First up, we've arranged for Karen to visit a local school.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08Joined by Millie, Jack and Harry, she's met by Cliff Gillam

0:25:08 > 0:25:13an executive at the Department of Education in Western Australia.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15- Hello.- Good morning, Karen.- Hiya. - Lovely to meet you.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- Welcome to Churchlands Senior High School.- Thank you.

0:25:18 > 0:25:19And Western Australia.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21While the children are taken on the tour of the school,

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Karen and Cliff talk jobs.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Next year, we'll be needing teachers like yourself

0:25:26 > 0:25:30who were looking to come and live and work in Western Australia.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32This school for example will grow by 400 students.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35And having had a look at your CV and your training,

0:25:35 > 0:25:39I can assure you that you do have the necessary qualifications.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42That sounds really promising and that's great news for me.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Karen could be in demand.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47But would she be able to reduce her working hours

0:25:47 > 0:25:49to allow more time with the family?

0:25:49 > 0:25:53The options for part-time work will depend upon the needs

0:25:53 > 0:25:56of particular schools at a given time, but part-time...

0:25:56 > 0:25:59part-time is a really real option.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01That's really good news for me. I'm really...

0:26:01 > 0:26:03That's exactly what I wanted.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05It's sounding promising for Karen.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09Meanwhile, Jack and Millie are getting the lowdown

0:26:09 > 0:26:10on some important matters.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12What are the school dinners like?

0:26:12 > 0:26:15There's lots of different stuff you can get there.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17So, sushi rolls, all that stuff.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21And there's an added benefit to Aussie-style schooling.

0:26:21 > 0:26:26On Fridays, today, we go to the beach, which is good, with school.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28So, I like that. Yeah.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30That's really cool.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33It's something that would never really happen in England.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36You'd be lucky with our weather, Millie.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40Across town, Wayne is meeting with recruitment manager Ryan Lanzon.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43- Wayne, hi. Ryan. How are you?- Good. - Good. Good to meet with you.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45- Nice to meet you.- Yeah, you too.

0:26:45 > 0:26:46Wayne's anxious to know

0:26:46 > 0:26:50if he could carry on working in the petroleum industry in Perth.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Based on the experience you've got, I think it is realistic to expect

0:26:53 > 0:26:56that market would throw up some opportunities for you. For sure.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59And most importantly, if he could get the right job

0:26:59 > 0:27:01without being miles away from his family.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04Say for example, I also didn't want to work

0:27:04 > 0:27:11within the fly-in fly-out industry and I wanted to stay...more at home.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13There would certainly be opportunities here in Perth

0:27:13 > 0:27:16for a logistics or an operations type role,

0:27:16 > 0:27:18where you could be based here

0:27:18 > 0:27:21but still servicing a project which is based offshore.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24That's exactly what Wayne was hoping to hear.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26Job prospects for the couple are looking good

0:27:26 > 0:27:30and if the salaries are right, the quality family time

0:27:30 > 0:27:33Karen has been hoping for could be within grasp.

0:27:33 > 0:27:38On our current salary scale for teachers, we pay 88,000 a year.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41- Really?- Which is about £49,000.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45And if, having passed, if you like, the process of assessment,

0:27:45 > 0:27:47you were accredited as a level III teacher,

0:27:47 > 0:27:51- you would move immediately to 106,000.- Wow!

0:27:51 > 0:27:55- OK.- So around about £61,000. - Wow, that is fantastic.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57That's almost double.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00Working full-time, Karen could double her salary.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03Will Wayne's prospects be as good?

0:28:03 > 0:28:05I would think, based on the experience that you've got,

0:28:05 > 0:28:11you could realistically expect somewhere between 130 to 140

0:28:11 > 0:28:12as a starting position

0:28:12 > 0:28:17and the reality is you could probably go anywhere up to about 180, 190.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19- That sounds fantastic. That really is good.- Good to hear.

0:28:19 > 0:28:24That's about £100,000. Much more than Wayne was expecting.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27As the couple meet to compare notes on the day,

0:28:27 > 0:28:30he can't wait to share the good news.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33I found out that I could earn exactly the same money as what

0:28:33 > 0:28:37- I earn working abroad at the moment...- Really?

0:28:37 > 0:28:43- ..with living at home.- Really! - Yeah.- Really?- Yeah.- Fantastic.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45And Karen has been doing her sums.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49If I did the half week, two and a half days, I'd still get

0:28:49 > 0:28:53what I get full-time...what I could get full-time in the UK.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57Which means I could still do part-time and get a full-time wage.

0:28:57 > 0:29:02So, looks like the odds are in the favour of Australia at the moment.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05- That sounds exactly what we need, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:29:05 > 0:29:06Back to being a family again.

0:29:06 > 0:29:10No prizes for guessing how this vote turns out.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21- Australia!- Australia.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25You know, I could continue with the job that I do like

0:29:25 > 0:29:27and also receive a decent wage

0:29:27 > 0:29:30whilst living with the family together in Australia.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32I'm really, really pleased.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35A lot is obviously going to ride on what happens from here,

0:29:35 > 0:29:38but, yeah, everything is looking very optimistic at the moment.

0:29:38 > 0:29:39So, good.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52It seems like Wayne could slowly but surely be coming round

0:29:52 > 0:29:56to Karen's vision of a new life down under for the family.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00After five years of spending most of their time thousands of miles

0:30:00 > 0:30:04apart, will a day out together in the Australian sunshine

0:30:04 > 0:30:05prove another winner?

0:30:07 > 0:30:09The family love the ocean

0:30:09 > 0:30:13so time spent catching waves should go down well with everyone.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16They're spending the day learning to surf at Scarboro Beach

0:30:16 > 0:30:19where they are met by expat Jody Ballard,

0:30:19 > 0:30:22captain of the local Surf Life Saving Club.

0:30:22 > 0:30:23So, this is Kate and Allie

0:30:23 > 0:30:26and they are going to take you in the water today.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30Before they hit the waves, Millie has got an all-important question.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32How usual do you get sharks that come...

0:30:32 > 0:30:34like, that come down to the beach?

0:30:34 > 0:30:37We don't get them very often. We're very good at spotting them

0:30:37 > 0:30:39because we have a helicopter in the air.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42That's a relief. Time to hit the surf.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56The day's everything Karen had been hoping for.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00To be able to come to this every weekend just, to me,

0:31:00 > 0:31:03is just amazing, really. I don't think I'd ever get bored with it.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07And when she finally gets some 'me time,' she rises to the occasion.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13It's good to see Karen having some fun.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15The first time for a long time, to be honest.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19I mean, she's been tied up, wrapped up with the kids for almost

0:31:19 > 0:31:20five years, so it's good.

0:31:22 > 0:31:23I bet she's loving it!

0:31:23 > 0:31:27For Wayne, it's been a reminder of what he's been missing out on.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30To be able to be, you know, a really good friend

0:31:30 > 0:31:33as well as a father, you know, being involved with as much as possible

0:31:33 > 0:31:35with the kids would be fantastic.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39And it's been an out-of-this-world experience for Millie and Jack.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42The surfing was like...

0:31:43 > 0:31:46..flying through heaven.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Being able to spend time with my dad was better.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53And also involves having more time with Mum.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57After just a taste of the outdoors lifestyle they could have,

0:31:57 > 0:32:00will the family vote home or away?

0:32:00 > 0:32:03After a fun day, our vote is...

0:32:10 > 0:32:12ALL: Australia!

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Obviously, my vote goes to Australia.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18Really pleased that now, obviously, the rest of the family

0:32:18 > 0:32:21at least after today are also coming round to this way of thinking.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23It's great!

0:32:23 > 0:32:25And Wayne's craving for Cornwall

0:32:25 > 0:32:27could be becoming a thing of the past.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29I like Cornwall. I love Cornwall.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32I won't, you know, slate the place. It has been sunnier here.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34It's probably the first time in about...

0:32:34 > 0:32:38five years we've been on the beach and we're not wearing wet suits.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41Superb! But we've got to get used to the sun, haven't we?

0:32:41 > 0:32:43We are all little bit pink today.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45Dad, we weren't going to remind you.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48- You are the pinkest of us all. - Ha-ha!

0:32:48 > 0:32:52Mirror, mirror on the wall who's the pinkest of them all? You are.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00With another vote for Australia from Wayne,

0:33:00 > 0:33:03Karen's dream seems to be creeping ever closer.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06But if they are to avoid being burnt by the cost of a move,

0:33:06 > 0:33:09the couple will need to achieve the right price

0:33:09 > 0:33:10for their home in the UK.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13They think it's worth £420,000.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16Will two local estate agents agree?

0:33:17 > 0:33:23Lovely bright hallway. Oak panel doors. Very modern and contemporary.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27The lounge is a great size. Lovely and bright, big windows.

0:33:27 > 0:33:32A superb, modern, white, contemporary kitchen.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35And I've also noticed they like a glass of wine.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38Not quite big enough for my liking, though.

0:33:38 > 0:33:39Oh, God, our bedroom.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41Lovely. Master suite. Really good size room.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44Ah, lovely. Nice impressive wet room.

0:33:44 > 0:33:47Hey! It's your bedroom!

0:33:47 > 0:33:51This room really does have a seaside feel. Surfboard.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Surfing trunks on the radiator. Oh, and what do we have here?

0:33:54 > 0:33:57A bearded dragon, not many of those around here.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59And there's your room, Millie!

0:33:59 > 0:34:03Ha, that's impressive storage, study, make-up.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05You've got everything. You know, as a teenager,

0:34:05 > 0:34:07you must love this room, it's perfect.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09- WAYNE:- See how lucky you are, Millie?

0:34:09 > 0:34:10This is a super family home.

0:34:10 > 0:34:15In the current market I'd value this property at £325,000.

0:34:15 > 0:34:17For a quick sell, I'd value it at £300,000.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19KAREN: No way.

0:34:19 > 0:34:20Fabulous family home.

0:34:20 > 0:34:25In the current market, I'd value this family home at 425,000

0:34:25 > 0:34:27and for a quick sell at 399,950.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30It's quite a difference in valuations.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33I think, you know, 100,000 difference

0:34:33 > 0:34:38between the two valuations between two estate agents within the same...

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Well, he did say that was the top end, didn't he?

0:34:40 > 0:34:42..they're based in the same area, you know?

0:34:42 > 0:34:46Possibly, I would push for the higher end to begin with.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49- See what happens.- I mean, if we can get the higher amount, then why not?

0:34:49 > 0:34:53It's like you say, isn't it? You know, let's do it.

0:34:54 > 0:34:58With just one valuation close to what they were expecting,

0:34:58 > 0:35:01the couple move onto examine the price of everyday living.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05We've provided a comparison of costs in the UK and Australia,

0:35:05 > 0:35:08starting with the weekly supermarket shop.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11Looky there! Blimey! Wow! Look at baby wipes.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14£3.50 in the UK, £8.32 in Australia.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- That's massive. - That is a lot, isn't it?

0:35:17 > 0:35:21Red, seedless grapes - £1.39 here, so that's something that's cheaper.

0:35:21 > 0:35:26The kiwi punnet - 75p in the UK, £2.50 in Australia.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28- Yeah, well, we wouldn't... - That's surprising.- Yeah.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31I mean, you'd think close to New Zealand, they'd be a bit cheaper

0:35:31 > 0:35:33- really, wouldn't you? - Yeah. OK, right.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36That's a £146 difference a month.

0:35:36 > 0:35:41On top of our normal shopping per year, you know, that's a...

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Fetching up to like 1,800 quid now. That's a lot.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47And that's just on food.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50The Dennetts have worked hard to reduce their mortgage in the UK

0:35:50 > 0:35:53and their current monthly payment comes to £800.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56Based on the second property they saw in Australia,

0:35:56 > 0:36:00how would buying a home down under affect their outgoings?

0:36:00 > 0:36:031,154.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07- So, the difference... - Would be a difference of...

0:36:07 > 0:36:10- 370.- 370 a month.- Yeah.

0:36:10 > 0:36:14Which again, if you think about it, it's almost another mortgage

0:36:14 > 0:36:16- back in the UK. - So, if we extended the term,

0:36:16 > 0:36:19we might make the monthly affordability cheaper.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22- At the end of the day though... - It is more expensive.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25After adding together all of their costs down under

0:36:25 > 0:36:28and taking their potential Australian income into account...

0:36:28 > 0:36:33- We're going to be £294.77 worse off a month.- Yeah.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38..the figures are disappointing, but Karen is not going to let

0:36:38 > 0:36:42her dream of a life down under slip away without a fight.

0:36:42 > 0:36:43See, I mean, be fair.

0:36:43 > 0:36:48Do you honestly think you could get a job in the UK

0:36:48 > 0:36:52working Monday to Friday and still be able to bring that much?

0:36:52 > 0:36:55I mean, with me only doing two and a half days a week?

0:36:55 > 0:36:57- No chance.- No chance.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59So, you know, at the end of the day, I still think we are still

0:36:59 > 0:37:02in a comfortable position and you are Monday to Friday.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04I think that's fantastic.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07But when it comes to voting for finances down under,

0:37:07 > 0:37:09will Wayne feel the same?

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Today, our decisions are going to be...

0:37:17 > 0:37:20- Australia.- Australia.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24Excellent, so you don't mind that... losing that little bit of extra then?

0:37:24 > 0:37:28No, not at all. I can still receive the same amount of money per month.

0:37:28 > 0:37:33We could still save and plus, you know, the biggest part of it is

0:37:33 > 0:37:35I will be at home full-time.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37SHE LAUGHS This is great.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46Although the figures may not have been the breakthrough

0:37:46 > 0:37:49the couple had hoped for, Wayne's fourth vote for Australia means

0:37:49 > 0:37:53Karen may have a real chance of persuading him to make the move.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55But there's still one cost to consider -

0:37:55 > 0:37:59the emotional cost of leaving loved ones behind.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02The family have decided to watch a DVD of messages

0:38:02 > 0:38:04from back home together.

0:38:04 > 0:38:08Hi, Karen. Hi, Wayne. Hello, Millie, Jack, Harry.

0:38:08 > 0:38:09Hello!

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Hiya, Karen. Hiya, Wayne. Hiya, kids.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15Hi, Wayne, Karen and the kidlies.

0:38:15 > 0:38:19Karen and Wayne, they're fantastic parents to the kids.

0:38:19 > 0:38:20They're really lovely.

0:38:20 > 0:38:25Wayne is very, very laid-back. Nothing phases Wayne much.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27Karen, I think, is an absolute trooper.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30I take my hat off to that lady.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32She just makes me immensely proud.

0:38:32 > 0:38:37I mean, a lot of people usually say their mum's their inspiration,

0:38:37 > 0:38:41but I think my Karen's my inspiration really.

0:38:41 > 0:38:45Millie now has grown into a lovely young lady.

0:38:45 > 0:38:47She's very responsible, very grown-up.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50Harry just makes my heart melt.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53Jack? Well, Jack's a young lad doing everything that young lads do.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56My first reaction when Karen said she might be moving to Australia

0:38:56 > 0:38:58was I felt really sad.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00You know, I just try and look at it positively

0:39:00 > 0:39:03and hope they'll be very happy.

0:39:03 > 0:39:05Obviously, you want them to be close to you,

0:39:05 > 0:39:08but on the other hand, if it's going to improve their life

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and we are not going to be around forever.

0:39:11 > 0:39:16I want them to go, but selfishly, I'm really going to miss the family.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21I just love them all so much.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25I know that they want to go and they have to go to be happy

0:39:25 > 0:39:28and I should be excited for them really, but it's hard.

0:39:28 > 0:39:30It's very hard.

0:39:30 > 0:39:33Obviously, we'll miss you if you go abroad,

0:39:33 > 0:39:37but having said that, we'll support you all the way.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40It's going to be a big wrench to see you go,

0:39:40 > 0:39:43but you don't have to think about us.

0:39:43 > 0:39:44You have to do what's right for you.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46I know it's your dream.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49I'll try my best to support you

0:39:49 > 0:39:52and I will be there for you wherever you are in the world.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57SHE CRIES

0:39:57 > 0:40:00I just don't know what I'll do without all of you.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02It's going to be really hard.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13- Nan was really sad, wasn't she? KIDS:- Yeah.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17Obviously, seeing my mum upset is not a very nice thing.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20That does make me feel really guilty, you know,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24but it's nice as well to see that my mum is so proud.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26Little bit surprised there to see my mum a bit teary.

0:40:26 > 0:40:28So, I'm sure, you know,

0:40:28 > 0:40:31once she realises that she can come out any time she wants,

0:40:31 > 0:40:33spend as much time with us as she wants,

0:40:33 > 0:40:35she'll feel a bit better.

0:40:38 > 0:40:42Hearing from home has been a difficult reminder of what

0:40:42 > 0:40:44the family could stand to lose.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47Australia may have exceeded Karen's expectations,

0:40:47 > 0:40:50but more time together with her family

0:40:50 > 0:40:53will mean long separations from loved ones at home.

0:40:56 > 0:41:00Karen's been dreaming of a new life down under for years

0:41:00 > 0:41:02and the trial week hasn't disappointed.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05We got to spend time together as a family

0:41:05 > 0:41:07and we also got to share the fun.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09It has been good. It has been fantastic.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11Everything that I wanted to be.

0:41:11 > 0:41:15And Jack and Millie have appreciated having their dad close again.

0:41:15 > 0:41:21My favourite bit about Australia is seeing my dad more.

0:41:21 > 0:41:25I felt a lot more happy than I normally am.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Wayne's eyes have been opened to Karen's vision.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30Oh, it's been a great week. I loved it.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33The amount of time I spent with the kids this week has been fantastic.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36But he's still got one foot in the UK.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Cornwall, still thinking about it, you know?

0:41:38 > 0:41:40It's definitely not out the window yet.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44While seeing her mum so upset has given Karen paused for thought.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46It makes you think a lot, you know,

0:41:46 > 0:41:49are all these other things superficial

0:41:49 > 0:41:52and what we're missing is the real thing in the UK?

0:41:52 > 0:41:56I'm not 100% any more. I need to really think about it.

0:41:56 > 0:42:01It's decision time. Where does the Dennett's future lie?

0:42:01 > 0:42:05After a very busy week in Perth, Australia,

0:42:05 > 0:42:07our vote goes to...

0:42:16 > 0:42:18ALL: Australia!

0:42:18 > 0:42:22- Oh, we're all Australia!- Hmm.- Wow!

0:42:22 > 0:42:25I will miss everybody, but at the end of the day,

0:42:25 > 0:42:29seeing all the opportunities we have here I just can't let that go.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32There's a lot more things to think about and look at,

0:42:32 > 0:42:34but at the moment, I'll most certainly say,

0:42:34 > 0:42:36"Yeah, let's give Australia a go."

0:42:36 > 0:42:41I'm definitely going to miss my friends and family,

0:42:41 > 0:42:44but hopefully they'll come out and see us every year or so.

0:42:44 > 0:42:49My favourite bit about Australia is getting to spend more time

0:42:49 > 0:42:53with my dad because I don't get to see him much.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56Well, that's really good that Jack wants to spend more time with me

0:42:56 > 0:42:58cos I most certainly do with them.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07Their trial week down under has seen Karen succeed in persuading

0:43:07 > 0:43:11Wayne the family's future should be spent closer to Canberra

0:43:11 > 0:43:15than Cornwall. Hopefully, they'll soon be packing for

0:43:15 > 0:43:19and en-route to their new life together down under.
