0:37:30 > 0:37:34Sometimes, he'll be totally normal, but then, when he's on that low,
0:37:34 > 0:37:36he just loses it.
0:37:38 > 0:37:39When he turned 18 I was like,
0:37:39 > 0:37:42"Oh, no, now if he gets into trouble, now it's...
0:37:42 > 0:37:43"You're going to go to jail."
0:37:45 > 0:37:50Once, he was high on weed, cos he was, you know, misbehaving,
0:37:50 > 0:37:54and he was passed out on the couch and I saw a bag
0:37:54 > 0:37:57laying on the ground. I'm like, I don't know where this came from.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59So, I looked in it and there's a gun in there.
0:37:59 > 0:38:01I'm like, "Where in the world did you get that thing?"
0:38:01 > 0:38:03He goes, "From my friend."
0:38:03 > 0:38:06And then, once again, down here in Oceanside, he went to another
0:38:06 > 0:38:09friend's house. He goes, "Mom, can you give them their gun back?"
0:38:09 > 0:38:11Absolutely not. I'm not touching this. I don't want this in my car.
0:38:11 > 0:38:13I go, "Where did you get this?"
0:38:13 > 0:38:15Once again, from a friend, on the streets.
0:38:19 > 0:38:21It's heart-wrenching and worrisome.
0:38:21 > 0:38:25Whenever the phone rings, you don't want it to be THAT call.
0:38:26 > 0:38:29Always, "Please don't let it be about Julius."
0:39:23 > 0:39:27My husband and I live about four apartments over
0:39:27 > 0:39:29from where Jordan lived.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35I know another young man, Calvin, who lived with him.
0:39:36 > 0:39:39Calvin and Jordan, who had been in foster care,
0:39:39 > 0:39:44and then, at 18, their foster care programme ends and they were in
0:39:44 > 0:39:49an after-foster-care programme to try to help them become adults.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54Our neighbour upstairs had told us that Jordan
0:39:54 > 0:39:56and Calvin were not getting along at all.
0:39:58 > 0:40:02The first time I encountered Calvin, I was coming home from work
0:40:02 > 0:40:05and I saw this young man knocking on doors.
0:40:05 > 0:40:08I thought, "Oh, he must be selling something."
0:40:08 > 0:40:13But then he came to our door and he asked if I knew how to sew
0:40:13 > 0:40:17and if I could sew these patches on his shirts for work.
0:40:17 > 0:40:19And it broke my heart.
0:40:21 > 0:40:25It didn't feel that they had enough support.
0:40:25 > 0:40:29Calvin didn't even know how to operate a washing machine
0:40:29 > 0:40:30or a dryer.
0:40:30 > 0:40:32He may have been a grown man,
0:40:32 > 0:40:33but he's a baby.
0:41:30 > 0:41:34My husband and I were just getting ready to go to the pool.
0:41:34 > 0:41:40We heard loud, loud voices and then we heard a few pops.
0:41:40 > 0:41:42GUNSHOTS
0:41:42 > 0:41:45Somebody screamed, "Oh, my God, he shot him!"
0:41:45 > 0:41:48DOG BARKS
0:41:48 > 0:41:50As I came running up,
0:41:50 > 0:41:52Jordan was lying right here.
0:41:55 > 0:41:58Very shocking thing to see, in person.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00The sights, the sound, the smell.
0:42:01 > 0:42:05Jordan had a bullet wound right through...
0:42:05 > 0:42:09at least it appeared to me, right through to his neck.
0:42:10 > 0:42:14His eyes were open, erm, his pupils were not moving.
0:42:14 > 0:42:16There was no pulse.
0:42:17 > 0:42:21It was quite evident that there wasn't anything
0:42:21 > 0:42:23that I could do for this man.
0:42:25 > 0:42:29NEWS REPORT: Police say Calvin Glass shot two people in Oceanside,
0:42:29 > 0:42:30killing one of them.
0:42:30 > 0:42:33He's just sitting on the floor with blood all over his chest and
0:42:33 > 0:42:37I'm seeing a trail of blood from the apartment to outside to his body.
0:42:37 > 0:42:40- CRYING:- I told them my baby's life was in danger.
0:42:40 > 0:42:42That's what I told.
0:42:48 > 0:42:51I had no idea it was Calvin who had fired.
0:42:51 > 0:42:54Once I found out, it was just even more heartbreaking.
0:42:56 > 0:43:00Julius was standing right about here.
0:43:02 > 0:43:05He had been shot and I did see blood,
0:43:05 > 0:43:08but he was very animated. He was very worried.
0:43:09 > 0:43:11I heard something about guns.
0:43:13 > 0:43:15I don't know how many guns were in the apartment,
0:43:15 > 0:43:17but, apparently, there was more than one
0:43:17 > 0:43:22and Julius was trying to make sure that they weren't there,
0:43:22 > 0:43:24because, obviously, the police were coming.
0:44:14 > 0:44:16The hospital called me.
0:44:16 > 0:44:18"Julius has been shot."
0:44:21 > 0:44:23I think guilt went through my mind,
0:44:23 > 0:44:25cos I knew... Obviously, I didn't hear from him.
0:44:25 > 0:44:28I should've known or had some type of motherly instinct
0:44:28 > 0:44:29that something happened to him.
0:44:29 > 0:44:33So, that was the initial... initial, erm, reaction.
0:44:33 > 0:44:36Why did I not know that something happened to my own kid?
0:44:40 > 0:44:43When we got there, he was, you know, full of tubes...
0:44:43 > 0:44:45coming from everywhere.
0:44:45 > 0:44:47He was black and blue all throughout his neck.
0:44:47 > 0:44:50But it was bad, cos you have a hole...
0:44:50 > 0:44:53He has the trach, the big hole in his neck,
0:44:53 > 0:44:57and the poor kid couldn't talk. He's just crying and, erm,
0:44:57 > 0:45:00just writing things down, and that was hardest for me.
0:45:03 > 0:45:05It's not good. You're like, "Why do you...
0:45:05 > 0:45:07"Why do they have to go through this?"
0:45:07 > 0:45:10You know, I never... I feel like I had a normal growing up.
0:45:10 > 0:45:12I didn't have to go through that. Why are they...
0:45:12 > 0:45:14Why does he have to go through this?
0:45:15 > 0:45:18Then you're like, "Well, I'm grateful he's alive,
0:45:18 > 0:45:20"cos look at Jordan." The child didn't make it.
0:45:31 > 0:45:35How does an argument that kids would have got into a fist-fight over
0:45:35 > 0:45:36years ago now escalate into,
0:45:36 > 0:45:40"I'm going to kill you because I'm not getting along you"?
0:45:40 > 0:45:41That's beyond me.
0:45:46 > 0:45:49It gives them a false sense of security.
0:45:50 > 0:45:53Julius feels empowered when he has the gun.
0:45:55 > 0:45:57He feels, "OK, I'm strong, I'm empowered, I have this.
0:45:57 > 0:46:00"So those people that are going to come to hurt me, they can't hurt me.
0:46:00 > 0:46:03"I'm going to hurt them first, cos I have this gun."

0:46:27 > 0:46:29and we've lost a beautiful boy, Calvin.
0:46:32 > 0:46:35Calvin is now going to spend the rest of his life in prison,
0:46:35 > 0:46:38where they're going to teach him how to be a thug.
0:46:40 > 0:46:45I'm sorry, I keep calling them boys but, in my mind, they were.
0:46:45 > 0:46:46They...
0:46:46 > 0:46:48They were just boys.
0:46:56 > 0:47:00# I'm in trouble, I'm an addict

0:52:02 > 0:52:03I told him it wasn't a good idea.
0:52:05 > 0:52:07I felt like if we got caught with it, then I was going

0:52:09 > 0:52:13I wasn't driving, he was, and he said it would be all right.

0:52:46 > 0:52:48When they get to the house,
0:52:48 > 0:52:51CJ backs in beside the truck that the rifle was in, and we get out.
0:52:54 > 0:52:57He goes up to the truck and takes the rifle out and looks at it.
0:53:00 > 0:53:04He takes a clip out of the back and he puts it in the rifle,

0:53:08 > 0:53:11GUNSHOTS
0:53:11 > 0:53:15He takes the clip out, sets it down and he poses for the picture that
0:53:15 > 0:53:19Selena was going to take before she could send it to somebody herself.
0:53:19 > 0:53:21CLICKING
0:53:21 > 0:53:25After she took the picture, he was pointing it around, you know,
0:53:25 > 0:53:27looking through the sight.
0:53:27 > 0:53:29Selena didn't have any time to react.
0:53:29 > 0:53:31I didn't neither, cos it happened in seconds.
0:53:31 > 0:53:33It happened two seconds after she took the picture.
0:53:33 > 0:53:35You know, he posed for it, took the picture,

0:53:41 > 0:53:43TRUCK HORN BLARES
0:53:44 > 0:53:47It just took me a minute to register what happened,
0:53:47 > 0:53:51and I walked around to her front and looked and seen the bullet hole
0:53:51 > 0:53:54and blood coming out. I said, "Oh, my God! You shot her, dude!"
0:53:54 > 0:53:57And about that time, she started screaming
0:53:57 > 0:54:00and she dropped to her knees and started puking up blood.
0:54:01 > 0:54:04And I picked her up and she walked about five steps
0:54:04 > 0:54:07and fell down and hit her head on the pavement.
0:54:07 > 0:54:10And I bent down and started holding her,
0:54:10 > 0:54:13and as soon as it happened, he called 911
0:54:13 > 0:54:16and was on the phone with them the whole time until they got there.
0:54:19 > 0:54:21I got the phone call.
0:54:21 > 0:54:25I got in my car and I was about 100mph all the way to the scene.
0:54:28 > 0:54:32I could see them putting Selena in the ambulance
0:54:32 > 0:54:34and I heard her call Chris's name,
0:54:34 > 0:54:39and she told Chris to come in with her, and they wouldn't let him.
0:54:39 > 0:54:40They shut the door.
0:54:40 > 0:54:44Erm, and then you could see the helicopter come.
0:54:44 > 0:54:47HELICOPTER BLADES WHIR
0:54:47 > 0:54:48I seen it come...
0:54:50 > 0:54:53..but then I seen it turn around and leave.
0:54:53 > 0:54:56And that was my first clue that something was wrong.
0:55:10 > 0:55:13Well, that shooting happened right over there,
0:55:13 > 0:55:14next to that black pick-up truck.
0:55:14 > 0:55:17Two men and the 16-year-old had come to the home
0:55:17 > 0:55:20to look at a rifle for sale when she was accidentally shot.
0:55:20 > 0:55:22Take a look at this video.
0:55:22 > 0:55:24This morning, deputies showed us
0:55:24 > 0:55:27the Ruger 1022 that they seized after the shooting,
0:55:27 > 0:55:29along Rocky Ford Road.
0:55:29 > 0:55:31It was stored in the back of the pick-up truck.
0:55:31 > 0:55:32If you look closely,
0:55:32 > 0:55:34you can see the clip was not in the rifle at the time
0:55:34 > 0:55:37but investigators say there was still a single round
0:55:37 > 0:55:40in the weapon. Deputies say 16-year-old Selena...
0:55:44 > 0:55:46Every day it's on my conscience...
0:55:48 > 0:55:52..of a girl that I had never met, first time meeting her,
0:55:52 > 0:55:54and I accidentally shoot and kill her.
0:55:58 > 0:56:01Selena had the phone and I was holding the gun like this,
0:56:01 > 0:56:04and she was taking pictures of it and it was after the fact...
0:56:04 > 0:56:06That's where the papers got it wrong,
0:56:06 > 0:56:09they said the gun went off while we were taking pictures.
0:56:09 > 0:56:10That's not true.
0:56:10 > 0:56:12She already took the pictures
0:56:12 > 0:56:14and I guess she was sending the pictures to somebody.
0:56:14 > 0:56:16Her and Chris was talking to off to the side

1:04:44 > 1:04:45in disbelief.
1:04:47 > 1:04:50He was my rambunctious little boy.
1:04:50 > 1:04:53My dad used to call him Dennis the Menace,
1:04:53 > 1:04:55if that tells you anything.
1:04:57 > 1:04:59Didn't make sense to me.

1:05:27 > 1:05:30there never was a buy.
1:05:30 > 1:05:34There was very little marijuana in the vehicle.
1:05:34 > 1:05:36There was no weapon in the vehicle.
1:05:38 > 1:05:42When I worked Narcotics, we never arrested on the first buy,
1:05:42 > 1:05:45we tried to make more buys and we would just step up the line,
1:05:45 > 1:05:47till we got as far as we could go
1:05:47 > 1:05:49and then you go back and arrest everybody.
1:05:50 > 1:05:54Why call in an officer when, erm,
1:05:54 > 1:05:57you haven't even made a buy?
1:05:57 > 1:05:59And if there's no threat,
1:05:59 > 1:06:03then why come in the way Officer Tiller came in?
1:06:05 > 1:06:07There's a lot of questions that need to be answered.
1:06:07 > 1:06:09A lot of them.
1:06:15 > 1:06:18NEWS REPORT: Two Tucson police officers shot an armed man
1:06:18 > 1:06:20this morning in midtown.
1:06:20 > 1:06:22It all happened at an apartment complex
1:06:22 > 1:06:25near Alvernon and Fort Lowell just before seven this morning.
1:06:25 > 1:06:28So, Tucson police say both officers opened fire
1:06:28 > 1:06:30and the man was struck multiple times.
1:06:38 > 1:06:42I knew Josh had had that kind of a history with being depressed
1:06:42 > 1:06:45but I didn't think it would come to the point where
1:06:45 > 1:06:47the cops would come and shoot him.
1:06:53 > 1:06:57So the first thing I saw when I came home were bullet holes
1:06:57 > 1:06:59in this window here,
1:06:59 > 1:07:01as well as a bullet hole in this door.
1:07:06 > 1:07:09And then I came in the house...
1:07:09 > 1:07:13See, the plaster here had been shot up as well.
1:07:13 > 1:07:16I'm assuming it was the bullet that came through that window.
1:07:16 > 1:07:22So that was all shattered and the place was really a mess.
1:07:22 > 1:07:25There were dirty dishes over there
1:07:25 > 1:07:28and all his books and everything were on the floor.
1:07:28 > 1:07:33I don't know, it felt kind of like a horror movie, I guess you could say.
1:07:33 > 1:07:35Erm...
1:07:36 > 1:07:41Yeah, not to mention the smell was just in your face.
1:07:41 > 1:07:45The worst part was when I came to the bathroom,
1:07:45 > 1:07:48the sink had blood all over it
1:07:48 > 1:07:50and the bathtub as well.
1:07:52 > 1:07:55Erm, there was quite a bit of it
1:07:55 > 1:07:58and looking at that made me a little nauseous.
1:08:00 > 1:08:02You know, I felt a little bit responsible,
1:08:02 > 1:08:06I felt like I should've been there for him, but I wasn't.
1:08:08 > 1:08:12So...I feel like, if I was here, I could've prevented something.
1:08:18 > 1:08:21VOICEOVER: Right after I was shot,
1:08:21 > 1:08:24I dropped to my knees and I said, "Thank you for killing me."
1:08:29 > 1:08:32I'm laying there going, "I'm going to die,
1:08:32 > 1:08:34"I'm going to die, this is it."
1:08:34 > 1:08:37And this voice, I assume it was in my head
1:08:37 > 1:08:41but it sounded like someone was whispering in my ear, said,
1:08:41 > 1:08:44"You're not going to die today."
1:08:50 > 1:08:53Looking back on my life, I've always been different.
1:08:55 > 1:08:57I've always felt like I stood apart.
1:09:00 > 1:09:03I had been in a relationship with my fiancee,
1:09:03 > 1:09:09we had been together for about two-and-a-half months.
1:09:09 > 1:09:11It was a good relationship.
1:09:11 > 1:09:16She really built me up and made me feel like I mattered
1:09:16 > 1:09:18and that I had purpose.
1:09:19 > 1:09:23That weekend, she was at her sister's wedding.
1:09:24 > 1:09:27I decided to go to get a couple of sodas
1:09:27 > 1:09:31and I get my sodas and I'm standing there in line
1:09:31 > 1:09:37and this girl, probably 26, 27, starts talking to me,
1:09:37 > 1:09:39there's a little bit of flirting going on
1:09:39 > 1:09:44and then she invites me back to her apartment to have sex.
1:09:46 > 1:09:48And...
1:09:48 > 1:09:51I just say yes.
1:09:55 > 1:09:58We have sex and then I go back to my apartment.
1:09:58 > 1:10:01My mood just starts to crash
1:10:01 > 1:10:08and I plunge into an abyss of sorrow and despair for what I've just done
1:10:08 > 1:10:10and decide I'm going to end my life.
1:10:13 > 1:10:16The first thing I did was, I cut my wrists.
1:10:16 > 1:10:19I apparently am a very considerate person
1:10:19 > 1:10:24cos I took a Tupperware into the bathtub to catch the blood
1:10:24 > 1:10:27so that they wouldn't have to clean up as much.
1:10:28 > 1:10:32I sat in the tub for probably...
1:10:32 > 1:10:36three, maybe four hours, just bleeding.
1:10:38 > 1:10:42It would keep clotting so I knew that wasn't going to work.
1:10:44 > 1:10:46So the police show up
1:10:46 > 1:10:51and I see the first squad car pull in and then I go, "Well, crap.
1:10:51 > 1:10:54"I can't be here any more. I have to be gone."
1:10:56 > 1:10:58I start rummaging around the apartment,
1:10:58 > 1:11:00trying to think of what I can do.
1:11:00 > 1:11:06I grabbed the two kitchen knives that I ultimately held in my hands
1:11:06 > 1:11:08and then they were pounding on my door.
1:11:08 > 1:11:10I told them to leave and I wouldn't talk to them
1:11:10 > 1:11:14and they're like, "Well, you're coming out or we're coming in."
1:11:15 > 1:11:17One of them walks up to the door
1:11:17 > 1:11:20and I saw him take his pistol out of his holster.
1:11:21 > 1:11:27And immediately that registered in my mind as, "There we go.
1:11:27 > 1:11:29"That's how I'll end my life.
1:11:29 > 1:11:34"They have guns, I have knives, this is America, they'll shoot me."
1:11:35 > 1:11:37I unlocked the door and stepped out.
1:11:46 > 1:11:48He exited the apartment,
1:11:48 > 1:11:50he basically came out quickly,
1:11:50 > 1:11:52he had two knives in his clenched fists,
1:11:52 > 1:11:55his shirt was soaked in blood.
1:11:55 > 1:11:58And he said, "Now you can see that I'm serious."
1:12:00 > 1:12:01He starts coming at me quickly
1:12:01 > 1:12:05and I started giving him verbal commands to put the knives down,
1:12:05 > 1:12:07I gave it several times.
1:12:07 > 1:12:10You describe him as quickly starting to come towards you?
1:12:10 > 1:12:12- Correct. - And what action did you take?
1:12:12 > 1:12:15Er, I fired. I believe it was three shots.
1:12:15 > 1:12:17GUNSHOTS
1:12:22 > 1:12:25Tell me why, if you can explain to me,
1:12:25 > 1:12:30why you chose to discharge your firearm
1:12:30 > 1:12:33as opposed to possibly engaging him with a Taser
1:12:33 > 1:12:35or trying to retreat some.
1:12:35 > 1:12:38Erm, I didn't really have anywhere to retreat.
1:12:38 > 1:12:42My back is to a waist-high railing.
1:12:43 > 1:12:47So you had concerns about him possibly pushing you over?
1:12:47 > 1:12:50- Correct.- And what else?
1:12:50 > 1:12:51Stabbing me.
1:12:53 > 1:12:57While he was on the ground and we were rendering aid,
1:12:57 > 1:12:58he started saying, "Thank you."
1:13:00 > 1:13:04And I go, "You guys are lousy excuses for marksmen.
1:13:04 > 1:13:07"It's two to the head, one to the chest.
1:13:07 > 1:13:08"Where did you learn how to shoot?"
1:13:17 > 1:13:20- NEWS REPORT:- A South Carolina police lieutenant won't face charges
1:13:20 > 1:13:24after he shot and killed unarmed 19-year-old Zachary Hammond
1:13:24 > 1:13:26in the parking lot of Hardee's.
1:13:26 > 1:13:30Lieutenant Mark Tiller claims that he acted in self-defence.
1:13:32 > 1:13:35ANGIE: I had to see Zach, it just didn't seem real to me
1:13:35 > 1:13:37until I saw him, you know?
1:13:39 > 1:13:45And that was the hardest thing I think I've ever had to do.
1:13:48 > 1:13:50But we found out that day that, erm,
1:13:50 > 1:13:54Zach had not been shot in the front, in the chest,
1:13:54 > 1:13:57he had actually been shot from behind.
1:13:59 > 1:14:02Then our minds just started swirling, like,
1:14:02 > 1:14:03"What's going on here?"
1:14:05 > 1:14:09The police said that Zach had tried to run the officer over
1:14:09 > 1:14:12and that he was shot in the chest.
1:14:12 > 1:14:17But then, if that happened, how did he get shot in the back?
1:14:17 > 1:14:19And that's when we really started thinking,
1:14:19 > 1:14:21"Something is not right here."
1:14:25 > 1:14:28We started demanding information from the police.
1:14:31 > 1:14:34The narrative that was being advanced was that
1:14:34 > 1:14:36Lieutenant Tiller was a hero,
1:14:36 > 1:14:39that he himself was a victim of attempted murder
1:14:39 > 1:14:44and that he had no other option but to use excessive and deadly force
1:14:44 > 1:14:46to get himself out of trouble.
1:14:46 > 1:14:47That was not the case.
1:14:54 > 1:14:58They claimed that Zachary was a dangerous teenager,
1:14:58 > 1:15:01although they had no evidence of that.
1:15:01 > 1:15:04They didn't know that Zachary was going to be there
1:15:04 > 1:15:06in the Hardee's parking lot.
1:15:06 > 1:15:10All they knew that it was going to be was Tori Morton.
1:15:10 > 1:15:13Zachary was with Tori Morton.
1:15:13 > 1:15:17They had been on a couple of dates before, in a friendly fashion,
1:15:17 > 1:15:20and this was really their first romantic date.
1:15:20 > 1:15:22Tori wants to stop at McDonald's
1:15:22 > 1:15:26and she buys a vanilla ice-cream cone.
1:15:26 > 1:15:28Maybe it was chocolate dipped, we don't know, but...
1:15:28 > 1:15:30a vanilla ice-cream cone.
1:15:32 > 1:15:35A text was sent from Tori Morton's phone.
1:15:36 > 1:15:39She is going to sell marijuana.
1:15:42 > 1:15:45The text, though, according to the authorities,
1:15:45 > 1:15:48is that the number was off
1:15:48 > 1:15:50and went to a highway patrolman.
1:15:53 > 1:15:58The highway patrolman then notified the local Seneca police authorities
1:15:58 > 1:16:01and said, "There's a drug transaction
1:16:01 > 1:16:02"that is going to go down."
1:16:04 > 1:16:09As a result, a sting operation is set up...
1:16:10 > 1:16:12..without a lot of preplanning,
