0:01:28 > 0:01:32In the building of the great American empire of the West,

0:01:32 > 0:01:37first a big section of land was given over to the Indians,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40then Texas was annexed in 1845.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43New Mexico became a territory of the US,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46then territories became states,

0:01:46 > 0:01:51but a mistake was made and a strip of land was completely overlooked,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53left without law or sheriff.

0:01:53 > 0:01:58This strip had no legal basis for government of any kind,

0:01:58 > 0:02:03and became a hideout for the outlaws who infested the West.

0:02:03 > 0:02:08No United States marshal dared venture there.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10It was called Badman's Territory.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15Its metropolis was a prairie town called Quinto.

0:02:15 > 0:02:22There, one bygone day, a quiet band of desperadoes set forth on one of their periodical missions.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27Satisfied with local conditions were Ben Wade, the hotel keeper,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30and his boisterous helpers.

0:02:30 > 0:02:37The merchants, many of them slightly reformed characters themselves, watched with approval.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Successful outlaws meant heavy spending.

0:02:40 > 0:02:45Wealthy Colonel Farewell, president of the Livestock Association,

0:02:45 > 0:02:51and Tahlequah, chief of the plains tribes, cared little about outlaws.

0:02:51 > 0:02:57Yes, Quinto was thriving and everybody liked things the way they were,

0:02:57 > 0:03:02except possibly Henryetta Alcott, an English girl transplanted to the West

0:03:02 > 0:03:07on the death of her father, publisher of the Quinto Citizen.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11She had long resented the town's notorious guests,

0:03:11 > 0:03:16and now she decided to do something about it.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Unaware of being honoured by editorial notice,

0:03:20 > 0:03:25the subjects of her headline turned south toward Texas and their mission.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Sure that'll get through all right?

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Don't worry.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Some of them train robbers are smarter than a coyote.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44Them James brothers could be laying for the train that's going on.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47They don't operate this far west.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Never yet, maybe, but supposin' they did?

0:03:50 > 0:03:57They'd be fools. The car locks from inside and the messenger won't open without the signal.

0:03:57 > 0:04:02Is that so? Well, I'm glad to know that, son.

0:04:02 > 0:04:09All the same, I'll stick around and make sure my stuff gets away. It's my 30 years' savings.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27HE PLAYS "OH, SUSANNAH"

0:04:29 > 0:04:32TRAIN WHISTLE BLOWS

0:04:50 > 0:04:53BELL CLANGS ON TRAIN

0:05:08 > 0:05:11- HORSE WHINNIES - Whoa! I ain't going to hurt ye!

0:05:11 > 0:05:15- Stand still, doggone your hide! - HE LAUGHS

0:05:18 > 0:05:20RAT-A-TAT-TAT

0:05:20 > 0:05:24How are you, Johnny? Fair to middlin'.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28Take care of this. The old boy's afraid someone'll steal it.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Throw your guns in the wagon. Don't raise your hands.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Do it.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47< Now get inside.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32All aboard!

0:06:34 > 0:06:36BELL CLANGS

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Hey! I think the train's been robbed!

0:06:53 > 0:06:55You do?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Halt!

0:07:39 > 0:07:44We'll fan out here. Chances are the bandits will come through that cut.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Patton, spread your men east. Wake, yours west. We'll camp for the night.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59Captain Hampton - three riders coming up, sir.

0:08:05 > 0:08:12- Rowley! I told you to cover Cherokee Flat!- I don't think the outlaws are coming that way.

0:08:12 > 0:08:17- What do you think?- They'll use Eagle Creek.- 50 miles north?- Yeah.

0:08:17 > 0:08:23The state police are running this. County sheriffs follow my orders. Understand?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26No. I never could understand you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31If a messenger comes from the Kiowa tribe, send him on to Eagle Creek.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Who's the young fella with Rowley?

0:08:38 > 0:08:44His brother. He's his new deputy. Together, they wouldn't make one good officer!

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Whoa!

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Here!

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- It's a Kiowa pony. - I wonder how he lost his rider?

0:09:06 > 0:09:13- The James gang?- Might explain why we didn't get the message. - And that confirms it.

0:09:13 > 0:09:19That's Hampton's posse! They must have intercepted the messenger.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23It all adds up. Mercer, swing around and meet me below the cut.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- Right, Mark.- Come on, Johnny.

0:09:36 > 0:09:42If you were an outlaw camped by the creek and saw that posse, what would you do?

0:09:42 > 0:09:49- I'd head up to open country. - Right. And if you're a deputy who's figured out the outlaws' next move?

0:09:49 > 0:09:54- I'd hide in the trees.- Right. - And pump lead into them.- Wrong.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58Every man has a right to a fair trial.

0:09:58 > 0:10:04- Outlaws? Train robbers? - No-one's guilty until convicted. Try to take your man alive.

0:10:04 > 0:10:11- What if he shows fight?- Shoot and don't miss. I didn't bring you here to lose you.- Yes, teacher!

0:10:11 > 0:10:17- Sorry. I was talking to my big brother, not my little one.- Thanks.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21If they come through, they'll be surrounded.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43They're closing in on three sides!

0:10:43 > 0:10:47- That leaves us just one. - I'll make sure that's clear!

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Told you we shouldn't stop here.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Shut up, Hank!

0:11:10 > 0:11:11Git, Buck!

0:11:33 > 0:11:37You young whippersnapper! Where'd you drop from - a balloon?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Take it easy, Pop. Come on, get up!

0:11:41 > 0:11:44HOWLS LIKE A COYOTE

0:13:22 > 0:13:24CLICK

0:13:34 > 0:13:38- What have we here, Rowley? - Prisoner. - One of the James gang, eh?

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- Me? - Then who are you, pardner?

0:13:41 > 0:13:44- Huh? - Tell me, and talk fast.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Can't talk fast. No teeth. I got nothing to say to you.

0:13:48 > 0:13:53- Hey! - Keep out of this. I'll wring the information out of him.

0:13:53 > 0:14:00- No, you won't. Come on, old timer. - Sure hate to cause friction in the ranks of the law.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Carson, take him. - No, he's my prisoner!

0:14:03 > 0:14:07- Rowley! - My orders are to take him alive!

0:14:16 > 0:14:19All right, Frank, pick up their hardware.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30Now get down and hand me his gun.

0:14:30 > 0:14:35Sure glad to see you, Jesse. I was depending on you.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40- All right?- Nothing a little distance 'twixt me and the law won't cure.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46- Who's that? - Friend of mine. We'll take him.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48We can't! He'll slow us up!

0:14:48 > 0:14:53He got hurt on my account. I ain't leaving him with that varmint.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55He goes with us. Come on!

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Come on. We'll find Patton.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Have you seen Patton and my men?

0:15:21 > 0:15:27- No, but I saw the outlaws. Why'd they take my brother? - He went of his own accord.

0:15:27 > 0:15:32I don't believe that. And he looked like he was wounded.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35- He was. I shot him.- What?

0:15:35 > 0:15:38- I had to.- John did that?

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- He turned on me.- Why?

0:15:41 > 0:15:45To help the outlaws escape. We had them covered but he...

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Did you try to take his prisoner?

0:15:48 > 0:15:51You can't justify him, Rowley.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55I'll get the truth when I bring John back to face you.

0:15:55 > 0:16:02He's a fugitive from justice. If he faces me, it'll be at the end of a rope.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05You're even a bigger coward than I thought you were.

0:16:05 > 0:16:10Rowley, it's a good thing I'm not armed.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13Yes, it is. Get off that horse.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Get off.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21This is robbery!

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Yes. Highway robbery!

0:17:05 > 0:17:09- Who are you?- Mark Rowley.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12- What are you doing?- Hunting. - Rabbits?

0:17:12 > 0:17:15- No. Quinto.- Oh.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19Who are you?

0:17:19 > 0:17:23- Belle Starr?- Maybe.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27- Cimarron Rose?- Maybe.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31- Sureshot Stella?- Maybe.

0:17:31 > 0:17:36- Talkative, aren't you?- Not with strangers. You were following me.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40No, five riders. One on a chestnut. Have you seen 'em?

0:17:40 > 0:17:44- The James gang?- Yes. - They passed half an hour ago.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Thanks.

0:17:46 > 0:17:53- Friends of yours? - One of them was fairly close to me. - Don't get close to them.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57- You a sheriff?- Yes, ma'am.- Sorry. - That's all right.

0:17:57 > 0:18:03- I doubt if the civic body of Quinto will greet you. - I hope they pay me no attention.

0:18:03 > 0:18:11- If you represent the population, I won't worry.- I'd remove that star. Sheriffs don't live long in Quinto.

0:18:11 > 0:18:16Thanks. I think I can take care of myself. You seem well able to.

0:18:16 > 0:18:21- In my business, I have to. - I understand.

0:18:21 > 0:18:27- Is that the way to Quinto? - Yes.- I'll be on my way. - If you don't mind, I'll join you.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30It's a pleasure, Miss...

0:18:30 > 0:18:33- Alcott. Henryetta Alcott. - You're not Belle Starr.

0:18:33 > 0:18:38No. Not Cimarron Rose nor Sharpshootin' Stella either.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- Say, what is your business? - I'm a printer.- Uh-huh.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Well, this is Quinto.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22BANGING

0:19:30 > 0:19:35It's Ben Wade's crowd. It's the Citizens' Committee.

0:19:35 > 0:19:41- What are you doing? - That was your first and last article on law and order.

0:19:41 > 0:19:49- Which proves how badly we need it! - We're the law here. We don't need peace officials and tax collectors.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Meg, Hodge - help me down with this!

0:19:51 > 0:19:55- Don't get frisky, young lady. - Just a minute!

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Aren't you gentlemen forgetting your manners?

0:19:57 > 0:20:01- Who are you?- The name's Rowley. - He's a Texas sheriff!

0:20:01 > 0:20:05- In Quinto, I'm plain Mark Rowley. - Why are you here?

0:20:05 > 0:20:11- That's a personal matter. - It's a public matter. You've got five minutes to get out.

0:20:11 > 0:20:18First I'd like you to open Miss Alcott's office, and I'll give you half that time.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Open up.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33Now I savvy. You put her up to this law and order campaign.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Howdy, Miss Alcott. What's happening?

0:20:35 > 0:20:42Mr Wade's committee decided to close my paper. This gentleman persuaded them to open it.

0:20:42 > 0:20:47Mighty nice of you to help a lady. Downright chivalrous, Mr...

0:20:47 > 0:20:50SHERIFF Rowley, Colonel Farewell.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52Really?

0:20:52 > 0:20:54Well!

0:20:54 > 0:20:58We don't often have a sheriff call on us, Mr, uh...Rowley.

0:20:58 > 0:21:05He's not here in an official capacity. Colonel Farewell is one of our leading citizens.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Have you read this, Colonel?

0:21:07 > 0:21:11Yes. You have cause for complaint against the paper.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15But you've been a little rough on its publisher.

0:21:15 > 0:21:20I prefer disagreements to be settled by arbitration, not fighting. But Colonel...

0:21:20 > 0:21:27Send the boys back to their businesses. Let Miss Alcott run hers...for the present.

0:21:27 > 0:21:35- Thanks, Colonel. And thank you, Mr Rowley.- It's been a pleasure. Glad to have met you, Colonel.

0:21:35 > 0:21:40We can't let her print this. She'll start something nobody can stop.

0:21:40 > 0:21:45I agree that we've got to check her, but we must be tactful.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50If you drive her out of Quinto, you've made a martyr with a story.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54Then other papers'll play up. Maybe all the way to Washington.

0:21:54 > 0:22:00Maybe you're right, but shooting that sheriff is strictly local business.

0:22:00 > 0:22:05Of course it is, but why shoot a man that might be useful?

0:22:07 > 0:22:11Hi, Elmer! Hello, Hank. How was your trip?

0:22:11 > 0:22:13Mighty good.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16You're back early. We did leave in a hurry.

0:22:16 > 0:22:21Anxious to get back for the grass rent celebration.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Hank McGee!

0:22:23 > 0:22:28Sam Bass! I thought they had you in the iron teepee at Abilene!

0:22:28 > 0:22:32Just a sojourn! Needed a rest. How'd you get out?

0:22:32 > 0:22:33Carelessness!

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Say, that's a real Sunday horse.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38He ain't so bad the other days!

0:22:38 > 0:22:43Where'd you get him? A nice sheriff gave him to me.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46You don't mean it! Sure as you're born.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50Sheriff said my horse wasn't fit for a man in my position.

0:22:50 > 0:22:57Can he run? Bet you 100 he can beat your mare with a head start of 40 lengths.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Can he beat Belle Starr's Beauty? Running backward!

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Hello, Sam. - Hi, Elmer!

0:23:03 > 0:23:10Hank, if you ain't bragging, I know how we can make a little honest money...

0:23:26 > 0:23:29Want something, Mister?

0:23:29 > 0:23:31Yes. Jesse James.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36- He's not here.- Or the Coyote Kid. - I never heard of him.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40- HARMONICA PLAYS - You must be hard of hearing.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44Hey, Custer. Did that prepaid pill-peddler show up?

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Yes, sir. He's upstairs, Mr Badger.

0:23:49 > 0:23:50Thankee.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Thanks.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55HE PLAYS HARMONICA

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Hold it. Hold it. Take it easy, son.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06You can't arrest me here.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09- I've come for John Rowley. - He ain't no outlaw!

0:24:09 > 0:24:17- I know. He's my brother. - Oh. ..Your brother? Why didn't you say so? He's right in there.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Hiya, Johnny.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25Take it easy. Johnny's brother.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29- You'd follow me anywhere. - What does the doc say?

0:24:29 > 0:24:33He'll be as good as ever in a week or so.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39That's good news, Dr Quillan.

0:24:39 > 0:24:47I've never been mistaken for a dead man. I buried Doc Quillan myself years ago.

0:24:47 > 0:24:52Must have been right after he left Texas under federal indictment.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54They couldn't prove it...so he said.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57- How do you like it up here?- Fine.

0:24:57 > 0:25:02Good climate. Mother and I make out. She'll be glad to see you again.

0:25:02 > 0:25:07I mean, you'll be welcome for supper. There you are, son.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09I'm always glad to meet old friends.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Whatever happened to Nate Carter?

0:25:12 > 0:25:16Got killed in a brawl. You know, that bank failure wasn't his fault.

0:25:16 > 0:25:21Bank failures are never anybody's fault except ours.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Too bad you weren't around for that one.

0:25:24 > 0:25:32- Must get a lot of Texans here.- Yes. People in Quinto are pretty decent. - Not the ones I've seen so far.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36It ain't that bad... the men that put away their guns.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Can't argue with the men that still carry them.

0:25:39 > 0:25:45- I understand. You still keep your collections up to date?- Yes indeedy.

0:25:45 > 0:25:50- Hey, Doc. Didn't I pay you in advance?- I guess you did.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54Gentlemen. This boy needs rest and quiet.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58Hold on, Doc. Ain't you forgot something?

0:25:58 > 0:26:00Why, I...oh, yes!

0:26:00 > 0:26:05- How about some medicine?- Medicine? - Yes.- What medicine have you got?

0:26:05 > 0:26:11Let's see. I got snakeroot, ipecac, asafoetida, turpentine or brandy.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15- I'll take a little brandy.- Yeah...

0:26:16 > 0:26:20- Thanks for looking after him, boys. - Don't mention it.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24- Join us in a drink, Mr Sheriff? - With pleasure, Mr James.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Get a little rest. See you later.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35PIANO PLAYS

0:26:49 > 0:26:54That's the list for tomorrow's race. We're ready to take all bets.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Think your horse can win, McGee?

0:26:57 > 0:27:00I'm gonna risk a brand-new Texas dollar bill!

0:27:00 > 0:27:03I bet you 10-1 you lose it!

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Can his new horse run fast? When he's scared!

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Can he beat Beauty? When Beauty's dead!

0:27:09 > 0:27:14Who's the official stakeholder? Anybody you like, if he's honest!

0:27:14 > 0:27:19If I was as crooked as you, I'd have a guilty conscience!

0:27:19 > 0:27:23I can't remember ever touching a dishonest penny.

0:27:23 > 0:27:28Give him some brandy. He's absent-minded. He thinks he's pious.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Hiya, Coyote. Glad to see you back.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37I'm not unhappy to be here. How are you, Sam?

0:27:37 > 0:27:42How about Honest Jim Badger, the Coyote Kid as stakeholder?

0:27:42 > 0:27:49As one of our most honest citizens, we've chosen you as stakeholder for the big race.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52- Thank you, but I'll have to decline. - Why?

1:00:12 > 1:00:15Oh, Meg. It is becoming, isn't it?

1:00:15 > 1:00:23- Nobody ever saw so much of you. Why a girl should risk her death to get a man to notice her...- Man? What man?

1:00:23 > 1:00:27- Don't be coy with ME. A certain long-legged sheriff...- Mark Rowley?

1:00:27 > 1:00:32- Don't snap my head off! - What gave you that idea?

1:00:32 > 1:00:36This is the first party dress I've seen you buy.

1:00:36 > 1:00:40It's the first time you've bothered with the hotel dances.

1:00:40 > 1:00:47- Your appetite's gone, your eyes are glazed and you don't hear a word that's said to you.- That's absurd!

1:00:47 > 1:00:55- I haven't seen him for a week. - You've looked for him. - Him? He made me lose the race!

1:00:55 > 1:00:58So the Indians wouldn't lose their grass rent money.

1:00:58 > 1:01:03- The things he said when he walked me home!- You deserved them.

1:01:03 > 1:01:08- You saw the telegram. He's an outlaw.- Only an accused one.

1:01:08 > 1:01:12- Oh, Meg, I don't know what to say! - Then don't say it!

1:01:14 > 1:01:18You don't think it's cut too low, do you?

1:01:18 > 1:01:20It'll never choke you to death!

1:01:22 > 1:01:23Oh, Meg!

1:02:11 > 1:02:13Thank you.

1:02:13 > 1:02:17You took a risk coming here, Marshal.

1:02:17 > 1:02:23I'd have visited sooner if I'd known Quinto had such an elegant editor.

1:02:23 > 1:02:27These are not my usual clothes. There's a dance at the hotel.

1:02:27 > 1:02:31Yes. I figured one more horse and rider wouldn't be noticed.

1:02:31 > 1:02:36There's something I want to ask you. In that telegram, you said...

1:02:36 > 1:02:41I'm anxious to bring this territory under the jurisdiction...

1:02:41 > 1:02:46- I don't doubt it. But you mentioned charges against the Rowleys.- Yes.

1:02:46 > 1:02:51Couldn't there be some mistake? Mark Rowley was a sheriff too.

1:02:51 > 1:02:56Until he helped the James gang to escape and committed armed robbery.

1:03:01 > 1:03:03Oh.

1:03:08 > 1:03:11No, I'm afraid there's no mistake.

1:03:11 > 1:03:18A peace officer turned outlaw is the most dangerous criminal of all. Like the Daltons.

1:03:18 > 1:03:21Yes. They're in town now.

1:03:21 > 1:03:25No doubt the Rowleys are hobnobbing with them.

1:03:25 > 1:03:30But they'll all end up on the same gallows. I'll see to that.

1:03:30 > 1:03:33But that's my job. Yours is a happier one.

1:03:33 > 1:03:38Miss Alcott, I wonder if you know how effective your campaign has been.

1:03:38 > 1:03:41The people outside are behind you.

1:03:41 > 1:03:44It helps to know that.

1:03:44 > 1:03:49- And I bring you now the means for quick success.- How?

1:03:49 > 1:03:54The organisation of Oklahoma comes to a vote in Washington in ten days.

1:03:54 > 1:03:59If we present evidence to Congress that people here want annexation,

1:03:59 > 1:04:07- there'll soon be a flag flying here. A woman of your intelligence...- My intelligence doesn't count for much.

1:04:07 > 1:04:11Anyone here will tell you I'm a cantankerous, meddling female.

1:04:11 > 1:04:14But I have every confidence in you.

1:04:14 > 1:04:17What is it you think I can do?

1:04:17 > 1:04:24These are petitions to Congress. Get as many signatures as you can, as quickly as you can.
