0:00:02 > 0:00:04This programme contains some violent scenes, strong language

0:00:04 > 0:00:07and scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11OJ SIMPSON: I'm ready to retire.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15For the last couple of years I've gotten very busy on the off-season.

0:00:15 > 0:00:20Mainly because, early in my career, I had those rough years in Buffalo.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23I sort of told myself then I would put my energies

0:00:23 > 0:00:26into something that was going to sustain me and last.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28I knew then that I would have trouble adjusting

0:00:28 > 0:00:30to not being a football player.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31So, I said,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33"Hey, I better start preparing myself for...

0:00:33 > 0:00:35"for, you know...now."

0:00:35 > 0:00:38I want to tell you that, over the years,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42I've heard your applause and I've appreciated your cheers.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44And I want you to know...

0:00:44 > 0:00:48that I already know it's what I'm going to miss most.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Thank you all, very much.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54CROWD CHEERS

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Growing up in Brentwood was really a wonderful experience.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43It's very quiet.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45It's very affluent.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Very safe.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49And very white.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Burglaries were very rare.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Violent crime almost non-existent.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57You could leave your door unlocked.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Never have to worry about anything.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06I graduated the academy in 1975.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10And then transferred to West LA 1978-79.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13West LA, the whole division, Bel Air, Brentwood, all...

0:02:13 > 0:02:15it's loaded with stars.

0:02:16 > 0:02:17And I'd sit back and go,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20"Man, am I really getting paid for doing this?"

0:02:23 > 0:02:26When I first got there, OJ had just moved from around Mulholland

0:02:26 > 0:02:27over to Rockingham.

0:02:29 > 0:02:34OJ Simpson living in Brentwood was really an anomaly.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37He'd be one of, like, maybe three black people

0:02:37 > 0:02:38in the entire community.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Los Angeles is unlike other places.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46If you're a celebrity, you have no colour.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48People enjoy having you in their neighbourhood,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52especially if you're a celebrity like OJ, where everyone's husband

0:02:52 > 0:02:54worshipped him as a sports hero

0:02:54 > 0:02:57and couldn't wait to shake hands.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Once I found out he was living on Rockingham,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04I decided I'd go by there and, you know, and let him know...

0:03:04 > 0:03:08"Hey, you know? OJ, I'm here. This is where I work."

0:03:08 > 0:03:09OJ was great.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12He'd always referred to the LAPD guys as "the boys". You know?

0:03:12 > 0:03:13"How's crime today?

0:03:13 > 0:03:15"Hey, Shipp, what's going on in my area, man?

0:03:15 > 0:03:16"Is you keeping the peace?"

0:03:16 > 0:03:19You know, stuff like that. I'd be like, "Hey, man, everything's good."

0:03:25 > 0:03:2970%, 80% of the people in the city of Los Angeles,

0:03:29 > 0:03:32were thinking LAPD does a great job, we don't have crime here.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35They thought out in the Valley or West Los Angeles,

0:03:35 > 0:03:39"Hey, man, they're great. They smile. They wave.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41"They're always around when you need them."

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Well, that wasn't how other parts of the city were being treated.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53On January 3rd, 1979,

0:03:53 > 0:03:57two members of the Los Angeles Police Department

0:03:57 > 0:04:00shot and killed Eulia Love at her home,

0:04:00 > 0:04:05in a dispute over a 22.09 utility bill.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07She died on her front lawn

0:04:07 > 0:04:09before the eyes of her own children.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16There is no single event that had a more profound impact

0:04:16 > 0:04:19in LAPD history up to that point in time

0:04:19 > 0:04:22than the shooting of Eulia May Love.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29This is where Mrs Eulia Love stood the day the shooting took place.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31There was an officer here, an officer there.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33She held a knife in her hand, there was a scuffle,

0:04:33 > 0:04:35the knife was knocked out of her hand,

0:04:35 > 0:04:38she reached for it and, as she threw it, the officers opened fire.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42This was a big deal.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45This is a woman who has had a tough time.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48And she was desperate.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52So there was a lot of empathy going out to her from the community.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59Once again, we have a member of the black community dead,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02under circumstances that are highly questionable, at best.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08It has been determined that the evidence does not warrant

0:05:08 > 0:05:10the filing of criminal charges.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12This was a justifiable homicide,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16committed by the officers in their own self-defence.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20As far as LAPD was concerned, it was just an event.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23And everybody was supposed to accept it.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28This was on the lips and minds of everybody in the community.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33The people are going to get justice and it's going to be in the street.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40It didn't help that you had a police chief who behaved poorly

0:05:40 > 0:05:41and, in many ways, irresponsibly.

0:05:41 > 0:05:47And I've commented on the media squeezing out the last, er...

0:05:47 > 0:05:49tear of emotion in this situation,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52where they talk about a 22 gas bill.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55It doesn't make any difference, but it was, er...

0:05:55 > 0:05:57a 69 gas bill.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59Gates was Gates.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02He's going to be fully supportive of his officers.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08I guess they don't think I have any sympathy for anyone,

0:06:08 > 0:06:10other than police officers, and that's simply not true.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14I have great empathy and sympathy for Eulia Love and her family.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Deeply sorry that it happened, but it did happen.

0:06:18 > 0:06:19I...

0:06:19 > 0:06:22was a big fan of Daryl Francis Gates.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Gates introduced the SWAT model of law enforcement,

0:06:26 > 0:06:29introduced the DARE programme to all of law enforcement.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31So he was an innovator.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34But he was also a controversial guy.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37- GATES:- We have officers out there doing the job.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Attempting to make good judgment, based on the information they have,

0:06:40 > 0:06:41protecting themselves

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and protecting the people of the city of Los Angeles,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46that we go to hell for.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50He loved LAPD.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52He loved his officers.

0:06:53 > 0:06:58And there were times that I believe that his love for his officers...

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and the law enforcement mission...

0:07:01 > 0:07:02..conflicted.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- TV PRESENTER:- OJ Simpson and Elizabeth Montgomery

0:07:12 > 0:07:14are two police detectives who have a problem.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18They're falling in love and it's breaking all the rules.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21But you are a married man and your conduct is supposed to be exemplary.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Would it make any difference if I was a white cop?

0:07:23 > 0:07:25- TV PRESENTER: - It's a bittersweet story

0:07:25 > 0:07:28of two people caught between their emotions and their actions

0:07:28 > 0:07:30in A Killing Affair.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Sunday at 3:00 on Channel 9.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Life for a black person, in a way, unfortunately,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40is different than for white people.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44And especially for black people who attain great success.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48Is there pressure from your community

0:07:48 > 0:07:52for you to really walk the straight and narrow?

0:07:52 > 0:07:55I know that you are currently dating a white woman.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57I wouldn't be asking this question

0:07:57 > 0:07:59if we were living in different times, but we are

0:07:59 > 0:08:03and there seems to be this sort of dichotomy here.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04How do you answer it?

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Well, I rebel against images because, then, erm...

0:08:07 > 0:08:09you know, people tend to expect things from you.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12I think I created an image by being me.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15When I get into these arguments with people of the bla...

0:08:15 > 0:08:17of my community, the black community,

0:08:17 > 0:08:19I say, "Hey, I've accepted Jesus Christ"

0:08:19 > 0:08:22"and I try to do unto others as, you know,

0:08:22 > 0:08:24"I would have them do unto me.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26"And after that, hey, my life is mine."

0:08:26 > 0:08:29And I do what is morally right and acceptable to me.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31I am not prejudiced in any form.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Obviously, I got a white girlfriend.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37I admired his celebrity status.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41We thought he had accomplished quite a bit.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43To move from an athlete...

0:08:43 > 0:08:47to a position of celebrity

0:08:47 > 0:08:51and loved by all the people, not just black folk.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54GOSPEL SINGING

0:08:57 > 0:09:01I invited OJ here, early on in the '80s.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05He didn't come as often as I thought he should.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07But he did come to church.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11I think he was very in tune with who his mother wanted him to be.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15She wanted him to be honest, to be religious.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Just to rise above a lot of the things

0:09:19 > 0:09:21that he saw growing up.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24His mother was a staunch Christian.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29And she had embedded within him the tenets of Jesus Christ.

0:09:29 > 0:09:34I would talk to him about having achieved money and fame.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36But all that came from God.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40And there are times when you should...

0:09:40 > 0:09:43respond to how good God has been to you.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Now, some days, depending on his mood, he would agree.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52But he was not out there publicly,

0:09:52 > 0:09:55fighting for African-Americans.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59I think each person who is in the limelight

0:09:59 > 0:10:02has an obligation

0:10:02 > 0:10:05to make things better for the last, the lost, the least, the left out

0:10:05 > 0:10:07and the looked over.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10And I thought he should have done more.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16If we, as black people, do not take on the responsibility

0:10:16 > 0:10:18to do something for ourselves,

0:10:18 > 0:10:20we really should be scorned in the eyes of the world.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23In my circles, there were not a lot of people

0:10:23 > 0:10:25who were preoccupying themselves

0:10:25 > 0:10:29with getting to OJ or believing that OJ could be turned around

0:10:29 > 0:10:32or, someday, was going to come to his senses

0:10:32 > 0:10:36and embrace all of the things that have the values that we had,

0:10:36 > 0:10:40in terms of really, really doing something demonstrative

0:10:40 > 0:10:41for the black community.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46OJ was just one of those things that you just kind of dismissed,

0:10:46 > 0:10:49"Oh, that brother's a lost cause."

0:10:49 > 0:10:51His voice was mute

0:10:51 > 0:10:57on any issues that related to black people and our salvation,

0:10:57 > 0:10:59police brutality, all of those things.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01He was just a non-entity.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07I don't know that he felt that he was sacrificing

0:11:07 > 0:11:10what other people thought he was.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12But you're sacrificing who you are.

0:11:14 > 0:11:15Who you are raised to be.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22How does one sustain that over that period of time?

0:11:24 > 0:11:29How does one bend one's soul to that degree of denial?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32SIRENS WAIL

0:11:33 > 0:11:35See, he's laying on the ground, bleeding to death.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Is that what makes you happy?

0:11:37 > 0:11:41HE SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Did you hear? Did you see what was going on?

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Did he see everything happening in South Central? Yeah.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Did he want to take that home with him?

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Did he want that to be who he was?

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Who he identified with? No.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55He stayed in Brentwood.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00When you live in South LA...

0:12:00 > 0:12:03I mean, you live here, this is where you breathe,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06this is where you occupy your space.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10I'm not sure if, you know, a lot of people even know where Brentwood is.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16That's just the reality of black America and white America.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Two totally separate worlds.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27ORCHESTRA PLAYS RAGTIME MUSIC

0:12:32 > 0:12:35He's somebody who learned how to live with,

0:12:35 > 0:12:38be totally accepted by a white world.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42MUSIC CONTINUES

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Underneath that,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47he learned all of the indignities of the black world.

0:12:50 > 0:12:55Although it's impossible to believe that he's that brilliant an actor,

0:12:55 > 0:12:59I think he was always kind of "on" when he was in a white world

0:12:59 > 0:13:02and he weren't when he was in a black world.

0:13:07 > 0:13:12Which makes him the right soul for Coalhouse Walker.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20He very much wanted to be cast in EL Doctorow's Ragtime.

0:13:20 > 0:13:21And he worked hard

0:13:21 > 0:13:23on trying to get that part.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26He saw the part as being something

0:13:26 > 0:13:30that he could go into a new dimension as an actor.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Let's go to your acting career for a moment.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Why did you want the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr?

0:13:34 > 0:13:37Well, first of all, it, erm...

0:13:37 > 0:13:39it was the only part thus far

0:13:39 > 0:13:41that I've ever actively went after and didn't get.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44So, I'd consider it my only failure in film.

0:13:44 > 0:13:45Thus far.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Good afternoon.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52I wonder if you might be able to help me.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Er...what do you want?

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Well, I'm looking for a young woman of colour called Sarah.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Er,...who are you?

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Oh, I'm sorry. My name is Coalhouse Walker Jr.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07When I read the book, I could identify with this guy so much.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10He was a black man at a time

0:14:10 > 0:14:12when you were supposed to know you were black.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14You were supposed to know you had a place.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Would you please wait around the back?

0:14:16 > 0:14:18I was raised in the sports world,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21where you're only judged by your abilities

0:14:21 > 0:14:23and, you know, what you have to give.

0:14:27 > 0:14:28Who is Coalhouse?

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Well, he's a guy who created himself.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33And destroyed himself, ultimately.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35ANGRY SHOUTING

0:14:35 > 0:14:38He was a guy who, among other things who was very prideful and suffered.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Suffered for his pride.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Mr Walker, let me give you some advice.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46You spend the money on your wedding.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Build yourself a home and a family where you can find some comfort.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54And just forget that some damn white man caused you offence.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56I can understand exactly what he felt.

0:14:56 > 0:14:57When he walked in a room,

0:14:57 > 0:14:59he gave no credence to the fact he was black

0:14:59 > 0:15:02and he wasn't supposed to say things or be treated any differently.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05And, er...that's the way I've tried to look at my life.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07So I felt I was the right person for that role.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10I felt that I was today's Coalhouse Walker.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Just forget it? Is that it?

0:15:14 > 0:15:16I've spent my whole life forgetting.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17You're a young man.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19You'd better start learning now.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Learning what?

0:15:21 > 0:15:23How to be a nigger?

0:15:26 > 0:15:29You know, there was some tragedy in your life in the last 10 years.

0:15:29 > 0:15:30You lost a child.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33I want to talk about how it changed you.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42The baby drowned in a swimming pool.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43On Rockingham, there.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47He was away.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49You know, he was always gone.

0:15:49 > 0:15:50Four, set!

0:15:50 > 0:15:52I don't know how much it changed me.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24and be there a little more to the people

0:17:24 > 0:17:27that have chosen to share their lives with me.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11APPLAUSE

0:21:11 > 0:21:13Thank you very much.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16APPLAUSE

0:21:16 > 0:21:19The most unique aspect of OJ Simpson

0:21:19 > 0:21:20is that you're one of the few people

0:21:20 > 0:21:22who've not only been successful in athletics,

0:21:22 > 0:21:27but that success has really carried over to life after football.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31CROWD CHEERS

0:21:31 > 0:21:33Well, it's real exciting for me to be back here.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35You know, on the field where I had so many thrills

0:21:35 > 0:21:37and to experience these Buffalo Bills fans.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39And, believe me, Howard, they're in rare form tonight.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44Well, he certainly tried to be a commentator.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Peyton following Matt Suhey.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49It's a testament to Walk... Walter's conditioning.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51This guy works out harder than anybody and he...

0:21:54 > 0:21:58He very much was involved in corporate America

0:21:58 > 0:21:59and being on boards.

0:22:00 > 0:22:05I think he was trying, very intelligently,

0:22:05 > 0:22:07to parley his fame into wealth.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13By the '80s, OJ really was a businessman.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18His new friends were all super wealthy,

0:22:18 > 0:22:20powerful white men.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24And I think, really, the reason he surrounded himself

0:22:24 > 0:22:26with all these big, successful entrepreneurs

0:22:26 > 0:22:29is because he saw himself as one, too.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34I've always been, sort of, an inquisitive person.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37And I have friends who do a lot of different things.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39And I've made it a point to find out

0:22:39 > 0:22:41what the people around me were doing.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45He called me a lot.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49"Now, Frank, I have this opportunity for HoneyBaked Hams."

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Or, "Frank, this friend of mine

0:22:51 > 0:22:55"is doing some storage things in California."

0:22:55 > 0:22:58I didn't always know those answers.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02But I guess I enjoyed the fact that he trusted me enough to do that.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06I introduced him to the business world.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13I took him places

0:23:13 > 0:23:17where I think very few black men had ever been.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19The Pine Valley Golf Club.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22The number-one club in America.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27I got him into Arcola.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30- INTERVIEWER:- He was the first black member of the club, no?

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Oh, yeah, by a long shot.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35This one time, he brought Sidney Poitier.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39And, of course, the whole club was circling around the two of them.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Even the bigots thought that was terrific.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45They loved him.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Because he'd just fit in.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53He could schmooze around and get ingratiated, cos he was "The Juice".

0:23:53 > 0:23:57Street-smart, this man was an Einstein.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01He could cunningly and calculatingly

0:24:01 > 0:24:05figure out exactly what these white people were thinking about.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07But he was also that way with black people.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11It was almost magnetic, they were just drawn to it.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13And I don't care who was there,

0:24:13 > 0:24:17when he got to the room, it was, "The Juice is here."

0:24:17 > 0:24:19Here's the man whose smile is more dazzling

0:24:19 > 0:24:21than all his golden awards.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Sportsman, actor, all-around wonderful

0:24:25 > 0:24:27Mr OJ Simpson!

0:24:27 > 0:24:29APPLAUSE

0:24:29 > 0:24:32I always told him he had delusions of grandeur.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35He thought he could do certain things in business

0:24:35 > 0:24:36that he wasn't capable of.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38- AUDIENCE:- Three!

0:24:38 > 0:24:41One day he was going to run Paramount or 20th Century,

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Warner Brothers...

0:24:43 > 0:24:45Now, I mean, he believed things like that.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47Ladies and gentlemen, another winning performance

0:24:47 > 0:24:50from Mr OJ Simpson!

0:24:51 > 0:24:54There's something deep-seated that I think a lot of people like myself

0:24:54 > 0:24:56have to face up to

0:24:56 > 0:24:59about what created this complex character.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02It wasn't just him. It was part society.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08We were looking for a celebrity.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12And I...don't think we wanted an all-white cast any more,

0:25:12 > 0:25:15as we did for the Police Squad TV show.

0:25:17 > 0:25:22This was something that, you know, kind of looked better for us.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28He was still in the public eye but, yet, he was economical,

0:25:28 > 0:25:30because I don't think he was in demand for movies.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Police!

0:25:32 > 0:25:33Throw down your guns!

0:25:33 > 0:25:35OJ was fine for Naked Gun.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37There was nobody better.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40GUNFIRE

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Urgh!

0:25:43 > 0:25:45SIZZLING Argh!

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Oh, no!

0:25:50 > 0:25:52Naked Gun surprised me...

0:25:52 > 0:25:55HE SCREAMS

0:25:55 > 0:25:56..how funny he was.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59He's a funny man. I mean, he was always a very funny man.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03And he was always a selflessly funny man.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05- Nordberg!- Hiya, buddy!- Hey!

0:26:05 > 0:26:08The doc says I should be on my feet and as good as new in a week!

0:26:08 > 0:26:11- And back on the force. - Nordberg, that's wonderful!

0:26:13 > 0:26:15- Whoa! - Oh, Frank!

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Everyone should have a friend like you!

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Argh!

0:26:22 > 0:26:25I used to take a lot of cops over to OJ's house

0:26:25 > 0:26:27and I would never tell them who we were going to meet.

0:26:28 > 0:26:33And I just loved looking at the expression on my partner's face

0:26:33 > 0:26:36when they looked and saw OJ opening the door

0:26:36 > 0:26:37and it was just like looking at...

0:26:37 > 0:26:40You know, cos some of these guys, you know, macho cops.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42"Hey," you know, "I'm LAPD."

0:26:42 > 0:26:47And you could see them melt like little kids around this guy.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51Everybody loved OJ Simpson, all the cops.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54If you asked him for an autograph, you asked him for whatever,

0:26:54 > 0:26:57I mean, he was just really, like, your best friend.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Now, let's take a look at today's black culture

0:27:03 > 0:27:04in the city of Los Angeles.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08The most important point that should be considered

0:27:08 > 0:27:11in a law-enforcement setting involving blacks

0:27:11 > 0:27:13is the matter of respect.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16Everyone should be treated in a respectful manner.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18- POLICE RADIO: - OK, 4-23, you see that male black.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21He's walking on the north side of the street there on your right side.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23That's one of the suspects.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27POLICE RADIO CHATTER

0:27:27 > 0:27:31People who have been abused by the police have no regard for them.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34They don't believe that the police comes to protect them,

0:27:34 > 0:27:37comes to serve them.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39That would be an unfortunate error in judgment

0:27:39 > 0:27:41for you to conclude that all persons of a particular group

0:27:41 > 0:27:45are similar to the few you have contact while you are working.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48We're sorry, but, you know, it's our job, too,

0:27:48 > 0:27:49that we've had to do this.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51We just can't let you go.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53'Look how I look.'

0:27:53 > 0:27:57I'm light, bright, but damn sure not white. OK?

0:27:57 > 0:28:01But the reality is, when I'm stopped by the police,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03you know, they treat me like a nigger.

0:28:03 > 0:28:08OK, let's roll and let's be careful out there.

0:28:08 > 0:28:12In 1978, Los Angeles police chief Daryl Gates apologised

0:28:12 > 0:28:14after saying some Hispanic officers

0:28:14 > 0:28:18don't advance in the ranks because they are "lazy".

0:28:18 > 0:28:22And now an NAACP official is calling a comment by Chief Gates,

0:28:22 > 0:28:25"so horrendous that it's laughable."

0:28:25 > 0:28:29- TV:- It all started when he first defended controversial chokeholds.

0:28:30 > 0:28:34A number of African-American suspects had died after being

0:28:34 > 0:28:36subjected to a chokehold. And Gates was asked about it

0:28:36 > 0:28:38and he said the problem was that

0:28:38 > 0:28:40they didn't respond the same as normal people.

0:28:40 > 0:28:44The chief needs some time off to remove his foot from his mouth

0:28:44 > 0:28:47and LAPD's chokehold from the necks of black people.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49When I started covering the Police Department,

0:28:49 > 0:28:53you could feel the residue of that comment.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55In fact, police officers used to refer to the cars,

0:28:55 > 0:28:57which normally people would call "black-and-whites",

0:28:57 > 0:28:59they called them "black-and-normals".

0:28:59 > 0:29:03And they would call them that in front of a reporter, by the way.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06So it's safe to say that it was a sort of easy,

0:29:06 > 0:29:10call it racial insensitivity, call it racism, within the department.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16I moved to LA in 1988.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20I had a really good friend who lived there, and she said,

0:29:20 > 0:29:24"I have to give you the black man's guide to survival in LA.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27"Whatever you do, don't fuck with LAPD."

0:29:27 > 0:29:30POLICE RADIO CHATTER

0:29:30 > 0:29:33In Los Angeles it was a day filled with tension in many communities,

0:29:33 > 0:29:36because of the current wave of gang warfare.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38I feel like a prisoner on the streets.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40This city has vowed to stop gang violence but,

0:29:40 > 0:29:43as police hunt the people responsible,

0:29:43 > 0:29:45they must follow a trail of bodies.

0:29:45 > 0:29:47We're going to do whatever's necessary.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50And I told my people we're going to wage a war.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56Operation Hammer,

0:29:56 > 0:30:00that was the belief that we overwhelm the community

0:30:00 > 0:30:04with warrants where we believe that we had violent criminals,

0:30:04 > 0:30:08we could rid the problem.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10Ladies, down on the ground!

0:30:10 > 0:30:12Put your hands down, kneel over there!

0:30:12 > 0:30:13Over the past week or so, Chief Gates,

0:30:13 > 0:30:15how many arrests have you made?

0:30:15 > 0:30:19Well, in the last month, we've made about 3,000 arrests.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22Just in the last weekend we made 1,400.

0:30:25 > 0:30:30You just have a culture of officers who felt that

0:30:30 > 0:30:32the only way the world will survive

0:30:32 > 0:30:36is if we neutralise these individuals as soon as possible.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39Hands down, man.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41And in the process of doing that,

0:30:41 > 0:30:43they debased and demeaned the community.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49You understand me?

0:30:52 > 0:30:54There was no conversation with the community about

0:30:54 > 0:30:56how should we deal with this?

0:30:56 > 0:30:59It was just hammer, hammer, hammer.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02SHOUTING

0:31:03 > 0:31:04We have a war.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07We are going to be successful.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10Whatever it takes, we will do it.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22I'd just put the kids into bed, and the next thing I know,

0:31:22 > 0:31:25they just came in with guns and were saying, "Get down."

0:31:25 > 0:31:27He grabbed me by the back of my head and he threw me on the floor,

0:31:27 > 0:31:29then he kicked me and he hit me on my back

0:31:29 > 0:31:31and he said, "Get down, bitch."

0:31:31 > 0:31:33The kids were just hollering and screaming.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35Next thing I know they were just tearing the place up.

0:31:37 > 0:31:391988.

0:31:39 > 0:31:4139th and Dalton.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51Not the best police practices.

0:31:51 > 0:31:55Not the best way to manage a, er...a warrant service.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57- TV REPORTER: - Everything was destroyed

0:31:57 > 0:32:00as police batted and rammed their way from room to room

0:32:00 > 0:32:01searching for drugs.

0:32:01 > 0:32:05Much of what they found were screaming mothers and children.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08This is my bedroom over here.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11But they even broke all the mirrors and stuff out of the bed.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16They went in and literally destroyed the apartment

0:32:16 > 0:32:20where, supposedly, a lot of drug activity was going on.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23- TV REPORTER:- All this resulted in three quarters of an ounce

0:32:23 > 0:32:27of rock cocaine seized along with six ounces of pot.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32You wouldn't go to Beverly Hills and do that,

0:32:32 > 0:32:34even if you thought there was a mafia hang-out.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Even if you thought it was legitimate.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42I called my insurance and I told them what happened.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45He said he had never heard of the police doing this.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50When you don't live in the community,

0:32:50 > 0:32:52you don't think of them as human.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56In my wildest dreams, would have never thought the police

0:32:56 > 0:32:59of the city of Los Angeles would treat someone that way.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01They started kicking me.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04- What did they tell you? - They didn't tell me nothing.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07They just started kicking me and hitting me on my ribs and stuff.

0:33:08 > 0:33:10- ALL:- Chief Gates, we're proud of you.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12We're proud to wear the PD blue.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14APPLAUSE

0:33:14 > 0:33:18You'd go to the power of LAPD back then.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21They pretty much could do what they wanted to do.

0:33:26 > 0:33:27Yeah.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Hi, I'm OJ Simpson and this season on HBO,

0:33:31 > 0:33:34I'm going to be high-stepping right into your living room.

0:33:36 > 0:33:37All right, we'll do it again.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40When OJ was at SC, in my generation,

0:33:40 > 0:33:43you didn't have the jerseys you could go buy,

0:33:43 > 0:33:45so I would take my T-shirts and write "Simpson",

0:33:45 > 0:33:47and I'd put, you know,

0:33:47 > 0:33:50like, you know, his number, 32, and, "OK, I'm OJ."

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Hi, I'm OJ Simpson and this season on HBO,

0:33:53 > 0:33:56I'm going to be high-stepping right into your living room.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58I just thought, "One day, I want to meet this guy."

0:33:58 > 0:33:59OK, what's the next one?

0:33:59 > 0:34:01And it was through Marcus Allen.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04Follow me through training camp and I guarantee that I'll...

0:34:04 > 0:34:08- Hey, Juice, I did hear my name. - Hey, man, this is my spot, Marcus.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10Well, I've got the ball now.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13I'd been marketing Marcus for a few years.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15And I told him,

0:34:15 > 0:34:18"OJ ever needs a manager, let me know."

0:34:18 > 0:34:20Training camp is a time to show what you can do.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23It's a time to show off your skills.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26You can prove yourself as a man.

0:34:26 > 0:34:27Blah, blah, blah...

0:34:27 > 0:34:31I did public appearances, endorsements, TV commercials,

0:34:31 > 0:34:32autograph signings,

0:34:32 > 0:34:36basically everything encompassing his image.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38This week in training camp...

0:34:39 > 0:34:40This week in training camp...

0:34:40 > 0:34:42No.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44This week in training camp... No.

0:34:44 > 0:34:48The big thing that has always been in everybody's head is image.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50Image is everything.

0:34:50 > 0:34:55Never do anything that is going to harm his image.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58Thank you, guys.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02I remember he had a little 100-yard dash with Marcus Allen one day.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05And he had bad knees, OJ, from all the running.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08And he beat fucking Marcus. I couldn't believe it.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10It's something inside of him.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12He wanted to win, no matter what it took.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- COMMENTATOR:- Chopping through that swing. And look out.

0:35:18 > 0:35:22When he first started playing golf, he violated every rule.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26- COMMENTATOR:- OK, he's gotta work on his balance a little bit.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28I played with OJ and this other friend,

0:35:28 > 0:35:31Little Joe Kolkowitz.

0:35:31 > 0:35:34OJ had the worst form of anybody on this planet

0:35:34 > 0:35:37when he swung a golf club.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42One day, on the first tee, he hits this big drive

0:35:42 > 0:35:45and it hooks into the trees, heavy stuff.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50So we go down the fairway, we're waiting and waiting

0:35:50 > 0:35:52till Joe goes after him.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54All of a sudden, he finds his ball

0:35:54 > 0:35:56after a place where we probably went over.

0:35:58 > 0:36:03He sees the ball sitting on a tee, and he says to OJ,

0:36:03 > 0:36:04"You can't do this shit, man."

0:36:05 > 0:36:07I go, "Jeez, come on.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09"Do you know what the odds of the ball

0:36:09 > 0:36:12"landing on a tee in this area?"

0:36:12 > 0:36:17He totally was not going to confess to the whole thing.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20He definitely cheated.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22Yes. Yes.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26What he'd do, he had a ball in his pants

0:36:26 > 0:36:29and he'd drop it out and then, "Hey, you guys, come on over here."

0:36:29 > 0:36:31You know, "Here's my ball."

0:36:32 > 0:36:35And he did that to the point where, finally,

0:36:35 > 0:36:37a bunch of guys got together and they hired a caddy.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40We called it The Juice Patrol.

0:36:41 > 0:36:45And so he'd follow OJ around in another cart,

0:36:45 > 0:36:46so he wouldn't cheat.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50It was funny. It was, you know, it was like you couldn't get mad.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52It was very hard to get mad at him.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58One of the things you pride yourself in in being a golfer

0:36:58 > 0:36:59is you don't cheat.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03But people made a joke out of it,

0:37:03 > 0:37:07because they so badly wanted him to understand

0:37:07 > 0:37:10the rules and regulations of this part of society

0:37:10 > 0:37:12that didn't tolerate that type of behaviour.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15And yet he had that amazing charm

0:37:15 > 0:37:18that you'd somehow let him get away with certain things.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24APPLAUSE

0:37:27 > 0:37:30Whenever you went somewhere with him, like, doors would just open

0:37:30 > 0:37:33and, you know, people would pick up checks.

0:37:34 > 0:37:36I'd say to him, "Hey, Juice,

0:37:36 > 0:37:39"how are we going to get in somewhere?

0:37:39 > 0:37:41"We don't have any tickets." He would go like this...

0:37:44 > 0:37:46He... That's his ticket.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48I think he became entitled.

0:37:51 > 0:37:55I certainly felt bedazzled by OJ and Nicole and their lifestyle

0:37:55 > 0:37:59and I was very charmed by him.

0:38:00 > 0:38:05But I always did sense that part of it was not sincere.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08The other side is my better side, I think.

0:38:08 > 0:38:09Turn the other side for me.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13And I did feel that he took advantage of that.

0:38:13 > 0:38:18And if you allowed him to, I think he would, er...use you.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20All right, we're set here.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22My kissable lips, ooh.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25While he was married, his integrity was...

0:38:25 > 0:38:27I mean, er...

0:38:28 > 0:38:31..not as I would have it. I will put it that way.

0:38:33 > 0:38:36He was an incorrigible womaniser.

0:38:36 > 0:38:37He just never stopped.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43He cornered me a couple times and tried to make, er...

0:38:43 > 0:38:48sexual, you know, advance and, you know, I kind of pushed him off.

0:38:49 > 0:38:53I think OJ felt entitled to anything OJ wanted.

0:38:55 > 0:39:00And I think that he really needed that adulation from other women.

0:39:02 > 0:39:05She knew he had affairs and it drove her crazy.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08Most of their big fights were about his affairs with other women.

0:39:09 > 0:39:13He went out of his way to almost rub it in her face.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18He'd be in Las Vegas at a show and be holding hands with another woman.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21She would be watching TV and, I mean,

0:39:21 > 0:39:23I don't know how she put up with it.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27He was pretty darn brazen.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29I think he even blamed his affair with Tawny Kitaen

0:39:29 > 0:39:32on the fact that Nicole got fat when she got pregnant

0:39:32 > 0:39:34and he didn't want to have sex with her.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38Something as superficial and cold as that.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41# On the hammock, taking a little swing. #

0:39:42 > 0:39:44Look! See the trees?

0:39:46 > 0:39:49I told him, "Man, you're breaking the laws of God,

0:39:49 > 0:39:53"and nobody does it with immunity.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57"You're going to pay for it, man.

0:39:58 > 0:40:02"One day everybody's going to know everything that you've done, man."

0:40:31 > 0:40:35POLICE SIREN

0:40:35 > 0:40:37When you hear a call come out

0:40:37 > 0:40:41and the 911 operator puts out on the call

0:40:41 > 0:40:46that she can hear the woman being beaten in the background,

0:40:46 > 0:40:48that...that's serious.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53When I got there,

0:40:53 > 0:40:57I saw an electronic buzzer system, so I pushed the button.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03Almost simultaneously, a tall, female blonde

0:41:03 > 0:41:05came running out of the bushes.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10She's wearing nothing but a bra and sweatpants covered in mud.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14She kept yelling, "He's going to kill me! He's going to kill me!"

0:41:16 > 0:41:19When that gate opened, she ran up and just put her arms around me

0:41:19 > 0:41:21and collapsed on me.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25She was so wet and cold

0:41:25 > 0:41:28that you could feel her shivering to her bone.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31And I said, "Well, who's going to kill you?"

0:41:31 > 0:41:33She said, "OJ."

0:41:34 > 0:41:37She says, "You guys have been up here eight times before.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40"All you do is talk to him, you never do anything.

0:41:40 > 0:41:41"He's going to kill me."

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Her face had already swollen.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49She actually had an imprint on one side of her face and her forehead.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53So I said, "Do you want him arrested for beating you?"

0:41:53 > 0:41:54She said, "Yes."

0:41:56 > 0:42:00About that time, OJ Simpson came right up to the fence

0:42:00 > 0:42:03and he started yelling,

0:42:03 > 0:42:06"I don't want her in my bed any more. I got two other women.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08"I don't want her in my bed any more."

0:42:09 > 0:42:12He's got a receding hairline, so you can see his forehead

0:42:12 > 0:42:16and this vein was popping out, pulsating,

0:42:16 > 0:42:18and it was right up his forehead.

0:42:20 > 0:42:24I told him, "I'm placing you under arrest for beating your wife.

0:42:24 > 0:42:28"You're going to have to go get dressed so I can take you to jail."

0:42:29 > 0:42:33He turned around and went back in the house to get dressed.

0:42:34 > 0:42:40Suddenly, I saw a Bentley pull out of the other driveway.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43So I said, "Back up. He's trying to get away in a car."

0:42:44 > 0:42:47And we backed out of the driveway

0:42:47 > 0:42:49and I never caught him with that car.

0:42:49 > 0:42:50I never found him.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54MARCHING BAND MUSIC

0:42:54 > 0:42:57- TV COMMENTATOR:- Downtown Los Angeles, a little ocean haze.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00There is no smog today, everybody's taking it easy.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04Here at the 75th Rose Bowl game, score 7-3.

0:43:06 > 0:43:091989, Trojans were in the Rose Bowl.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12I was privileged enough to have sideline passes

0:43:12 > 0:43:15and that was actually the first time I'd ever been to a Rose Bowl game

0:43:15 > 0:43:18on the sidelines cos, when I was a walk-on at USC, I never got to play.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21CROWD CHEERS

0:43:21 > 0:43:23I was just having the time of my life.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26All of a sudden, one of OJ's really, really good friends

0:43:26 > 0:43:28came up and tapped me on the shoulder.

0:43:28 > 0:43:33He said, "Hey, man, er, OJ had a problem last night, you know,

0:43:33 > 0:43:36"and, er, he really needs to talk to you."

0:43:38 > 0:43:40- REFEREE'S WHISTLE BLOWS - It's over.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43CROWD CHEERS

0:43:44 > 0:43:47When I called, he said, "Hey, man, I had a little riff.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49"The boys had to come out.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51"Right now, I feel like I'm a fugitive."

0:43:52 > 0:43:55And he explained to me that they had an argument,

0:43:55 > 0:43:57and she got real physical with him

0:43:57 > 0:44:00and he had to defend himself and grab her and hold her and...

0:44:00 > 0:44:02The way he told me the story, I'm thinking,

0:44:02 > 0:44:06"Hey, man, no big deal. You know? You didn't hit her.

0:44:06 > 0:44:07"You know, you said she was aggressive,

0:44:07 > 0:44:11"and you were trying to stop her from...from beating you up.

0:44:11 > 0:44:13"Erm, no big deal."

0:44:13 > 0:44:16And when I got to work the next morning, it WAS a big deal.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24I got a call from downstairs, "Someone wants to talk to you."

0:44:25 > 0:44:27And there's Nicole in the lobby.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29"Hey, Nicole, what's up?"

0:44:29 > 0:44:31You know, she goes, "Did you hear about what happened?"

0:44:31 > 0:44:33I said, "Yeah, I did hear what happened."

0:44:33 > 0:44:36And she told me it wasn't the first time.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Showed me the pictures from the past beatings

0:44:39 > 0:44:41and I looked at those pictures

0:44:41 > 0:44:44and my heart just, like, dropped.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47I was like, "Man, this guy is a typical batterer."

0:44:50 > 0:44:55The '89 thing, the way I saw him act in Hawaii that Christmas

0:44:55 > 0:44:59convinced me that, boy, there was something really, really wrong.

0:45:02 > 0:45:06He freaked out about Nicole sitting their little son

0:45:06 > 0:45:10next to a homosexual in a restaurant they were at.

0:45:10 > 0:45:12I mean, he just freaked.

0:45:14 > 0:45:15And they fought all the way back.

0:45:17 > 0:45:21The next day, I got a call that he freaked out on New Year's Eve

0:45:21 > 0:45:22and he beat the hell out of her.

0:45:24 > 0:45:27Nicole knew that I used to teach domestic violence

0:45:27 > 0:45:29for the Los Angeles Police Department.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33And she asked me, "OJ's dad is gay.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38"Do you think this is why he beats me?"

0:45:40 > 0:45:44And I was like, "I... You know, I don't know.

0:45:44 > 0:45:47"But a lot of that stuff has to do with their self-esteem."

0:45:51 > 0:45:56OJ Simpson, that night, definitely got preferential treatment.

0:45:57 > 0:46:02Had that have been anybody else, you or me, we'd have gone to jail.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07I did place him under arrest.

0:46:07 > 0:46:09I tried my best, but couldn't get to him.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18If he flees, then, he's a fleeing felon.

0:46:20 > 0:46:24But the unique thing about OJ is it was OJ.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23You can't justify that.

0:48:37 > 0:48:42"The LAPD will never be the same again."

0:48:44 > 0:48:47Oh, it was devastating, because there was going to be a belief

0:48:50 > 0:48:53those guys driving down the street in black-and-white do that,

0:57:25 > 0:57:29Now, here's your host - Roy Firestone.

0:57:29 > 0:57:34When you live your life so publicly and really almost with such ease,

0:57:34 > 0:57:37it's hard to believe that there could ever be any rocky time.

0:57:37 > 0:57:39The reason I'm bringing that to light now

0:57:39 > 0:57:42is not to dredge it up again, but more or less talk about

0:57:42 > 0:57:46how things can get distorted to such a point that you are portrayed

0:57:46 > 0:57:48as the bad guy.

0:57:48 > 0:57:51New Year's Eve. Had a little bit too much to drink.

0:57:51 > 0:57:55You know, actually, my wife and I have been together for 12 years

0:57:55 > 0:57:58and when I look at it, it really wasn't that big of a fight,

0:57:58 > 0:58:02it's just that because of it being New Year's Eve,

0:58:02 > 0:58:05cos it's three o'clock in the morning, just finished a big party,

0:58:05 > 0:58:09it got a little...got a little loud.

0:58:09 > 0:58:10Here's my point.

0:58:10 > 0:58:14The point I'm making, Juice, is that it got to such a point that

0:58:14 > 0:58:18you were portrayed in the press for a while there like a wife-beater.

0:58:18 > 0:58:20Well, yeah, and that bothered me.

0:58:20 > 0:58:23Obviously, it bothered my whole family. I mean, you know, the day

0:58:23 > 0:58:26after this was over, we looked at each other - we had a fight,

0:58:26 > 0:58:28we were both guilty, no-one was hurt, it was no big deal

0:58:28 > 0:58:29and we got on with our life.

0:58:34 > 0:58:38I had always suspected that they had violent fights.

0:58:39 > 0:58:43The day of my wedding, I found out that Nicole and OJ

0:58:43 > 0:58:45were not going to be attending.

0:58:46 > 0:58:51And he said it was because Nicole was having very bad cramps

0:58:51 > 0:58:52from her period.

0:58:53 > 0:58:55I thought it was a lie.

0:58:57 > 0:58:59It was always Nicole's fault.

0:58:59 > 0:59:02I mean, even the '89 thing when I cornered him.

0:59:02 > 0:59:04He was sitting in a golf cart. I listened for nine holes -

0:59:04 > 0:59:07everything that she did wrong to create what had happened.

0:59:07 > 0:59:11"You think that she's bruised up? You should have seen my face."

0:59:11 > 0:59:14You know, the whole pity thing that he always went through.

0:59:14 > 0:59:18I think anybody that knew them... it was over.

0:59:18 > 0:59:22Then it was a matter of when would Nicole have the fortitude

0:59:22 > 0:59:25just to completely walk away?

0:59:29 > 0:59:33She said, "Ron, if it wasn't for the kids, I'd be out of here."

0:59:34 > 0:59:37And then I get a call from OJ. He says,

0:59:37 > 0:59:41"You got to help me here, you got to help save this marriage,

0:59:41 > 0:59:44"you got to talk to Nicole, tell her I'll never do it again."

0:59:45 > 0:59:47I saw her start to soften.

0:59:47 > 0:59:51Because, by this time, OJ is just doing everything with the kids

0:59:51 > 0:59:54and they're just having a great time, he's taking them here,

0:59:54 > 0:59:56he's taking them there, she's looking at me, going,

0:59:56 > 0:59:59"Hey, Ron, he's really changing.

0:59:59 > 1:00:01"He's really changing."

1:00:04 > 1:00:08When it turned toward the domestic violence,

1:00:08 > 1:00:11that was one that nobody wanted to hear.

1:00:11 > 1:00:13The police didn't want to hear it,

1:00:13 > 1:00:15most certainly Hertz didn't want to hear it,

1:00:15 > 1:00:19NBC didn't want to hear it - nobody wanted to deal with that.

1:00:19 > 1:00:21Back to you, Bob.

1:00:24 > 1:00:28When we heard that, I thought that was it. It's over.

1:00:29 > 1:00:33You know who called me to tell me that it was a false arrest?

1:00:33 > 1:00:35Nicole.

1:00:36 > 1:00:39Nicole called me and said,

1:00:39 > 1:00:41"Frank, it didn't happen that way."

1:00:42 > 1:00:44They'd had a terrible argument,

1:00:44 > 1:00:48but he wasn't abusive, they just overreacted.

1:00:51 > 1:00:54I certainly understand how she got involved with him

1:00:54 > 1:00:57and I can understand how hard it would be to leave that.

1:00:58 > 1:01:00There was a lot to leave.

1:01:00 > 1:01:05Especially if it was to go back to your parents' house in Laguna Beach

1:01:05 > 1:01:07and start over.

1:01:08 > 1:01:14OJ was the income producer for the family.

1:01:14 > 1:01:18For not only just Nicole and OJ,

1:01:18 > 1:01:21but for Nicole's father,

1:01:21 > 1:01:23mother, sisters.

1:01:23 > 1:01:26He was the money man.

1:01:28 > 1:01:32Nicole told me that she felt her family would side with OJ.

1:01:32 > 1:01:36And that disturbed her a great deal.

1:01:39 > 1:01:41Nicole was like a trophy to him,

1:01:41 > 1:01:44you know, something that he possessed,

1:01:44 > 1:01:46that he wanted control of, you know,

1:01:46 > 1:01:47and, "You better do what I say,

1:01:47 > 1:01:50"you better go along with this programme."

1:01:50 > 1:01:53I totally believe he was concerned about his image.

1:01:53 > 1:01:55What kind of public reaction did you get

1:01:55 > 1:01:57and what kind of corporate reaction did you get, Juice?

1:01:57 > 1:02:01Surprisingly...so supportive, it was unbelievable, you know?

1:02:01 > 1:02:03So supportive, you know?

1:02:03 > 1:02:06Most of the people I work with know us real well,

1:02:06 > 1:02:10so they can see first-hand that our relationship was as strong

1:02:10 > 1:02:14not only as it's ever been, but as strong as anybody's I know.

1:02:14 > 1:02:17- So nobody dropped you from any contract?- No.

1:02:17 > 1:02:19Another thing people don't realise about OJ is,

1:02:19 > 1:02:22he is extremely well involved in the business community.

1:02:22 > 1:02:25He doesn't want to do this, cos it's embarrassing to him,

1:02:25 > 1:02:29but he's one of the owners of HoneyBaked Ham, Ramada Inn,

1:02:29 > 1:02:30three Ramada Inns,

1:02:30 > 1:02:32very involved, of course, with Hertz,

1:02:32 > 1:02:35and when something like this happens, it takes a toll, it takes

1:02:35 > 1:02:39a bite out of it, but you bounce back from something like this...

1:02:39 > 1:02:43Once they really, really got back together, you know,

1:02:43 > 1:02:46"We're still friends, I still love the guy and everything,"

1:02:46 > 1:02:50but, you know, he kind of had that attitude,

1:02:50 > 1:02:52"I'm back. I knew I'd be back."

1:02:52 > 1:02:57You know. "Hey, don't worry about it, everything's fine."

1:03:14 > 1:03:18Prosecutors in the case say they wanted him to go to jail.

1:03:23 > 1:03:27Can you imagine if every time he did something violent like that

1:03:27 > 1:03:30that a report would have been made?

1:03:30 > 1:03:33When I got to the station, I checked the computer,

1:03:33 > 1:03:39there would have been eight previous domestic incident reports on file.

1:03:39 > 1:03:42Then I would have put that in my report

1:03:42 > 1:03:45and sent it on to the prosecutor.

1:03:45 > 1:03:49That, most likely, would have been filed as a felony.

1:03:49 > 1:03:54Because it would have shown that a slap on the hand

1:03:54 > 1:03:57is not going to cure this from happening again.

1:03:57 > 1:04:01And that's why I hung onto the report.

1:04:01 > 1:04:06I don't have a garage full of reports. I have one report.

1:04:06 > 1:04:07One.

1:04:07 > 1:04:11It was OJ Simpson's report.

1:04:11 > 1:04:14Because I thought that the case might be mishandled

1:04:14 > 1:04:18and I needed proof that it actually happened.

1:04:20 > 1:04:22And I thought he was going to kill her.

1:04:28 > 1:04:31A controversial case involving four Los Angeles police officers

1:04:31 > 1:04:32goes to court today.

1:04:32 > 1:04:33The officers face charges

1:04:33 > 1:04:36stemming from the videotaped beating of a motorist.

1:04:36 > 1:04:38The case has already raised accusations

1:04:38 > 1:04:41of officially-sanctioned racism and brutality.

1:04:41 > 1:04:44At issue is the use of force.

1:04:44 > 1:04:47The question is whether their force was justified by King's behaviour

1:04:47 > 1:04:49before the camera rolled.

1:04:51 > 1:04:53I don't think that should have been prosecuted.

1:04:53 > 1:04:57Those officers had about two seconds to make up their mind to do

1:04:57 > 1:05:00something, and they did what they thought was right at the time.

1:05:00 > 1:05:03When is too much? When is not enough?

1:05:03 > 1:05:06Shouldn't have been going to trial. Definitely not.

1:05:07 > 1:05:11On film, what you see was illegal.

1:05:11 > 1:05:13There had to be a prosecution.

1:05:13 > 1:05:18And if there isn't a legitimate reason for this,

1:05:18 > 1:05:20there's jail time involved with this one.

1:05:22 > 1:05:24I was fairly new to LA,

1:05:24 > 1:05:28so I'm thinking, "We got them. We got them cold.

1:05:28 > 1:05:30"This time, we'll get justice."

1:05:30 > 1:05:34And there were people who had lived in those communities a long time

1:05:34 > 1:05:38and they were saying, "Well, you know, maybe. I hope so.

1:05:38 > 1:05:41"But it's not a done deal."

1:05:41 > 1:05:44In a brand-new courthouse in a distant LA suburb

1:05:44 > 1:05:46called Simi Valley,

1:05:46 > 1:05:49the city's drama is putting a little town on the map.

1:05:49 > 1:05:52The defence had the trial move from Los Angeles County

1:05:52 > 1:05:54to this bedroom suburb.

1:05:54 > 1:05:58This area is notably more white and conservative than LA.

1:05:59 > 1:06:04It was a horrible decision. It was the worst possible decision.

1:06:04 > 1:06:07A lot of LAPD officers live in Simi Valley.

1:06:09 > 1:06:12The idea is you get a representative cross-section of the community,

1:06:12 > 1:06:14that's what the Sixth Amendment talks about

1:06:14 > 1:06:17and that people come in with different life experiences,

1:06:17 > 1:06:21because you really do need people to come from different walks of life

1:06:21 > 1:06:25so that you get a complete understanding of the testimony.

1:06:25 > 1:06:27Completely in fear for my life, scared to death that

1:06:27 > 1:06:31if this guy got back up, he was going to take my gun away from me.

1:06:32 > 1:06:35Cases involving charges against police officers are rarely

1:06:35 > 1:06:38slam-dunks, even when they're on videotape.

1:06:38 > 1:06:42Did you believe that the actions of your officers, up to this point,

1:06:42 > 1:06:44were having any affect on Mr King?

1:06:44 > 1:06:45None at all.

1:06:45 > 1:06:47This was a managed and controlled use of force.

1:06:47 > 1:06:49It followed the policies and procedures

1:06:49 > 1:06:52of the Los Angeles Police Department and the training.

1:06:52 > 1:06:54Now, as the defence presents its case,

1:06:54 > 1:06:57civil rights lawyers like Johnnie Cochran worry that

1:06:57 > 1:07:00convictions are far from certain

1:07:00 > 1:07:03because the prosecutors seem to lack experience dealing with cops.

1:07:03 > 1:07:06Somebody with some experience has to stand up and say,

1:07:06 > 1:07:08"Look, you can't get away with this.

1:07:08 > 1:07:10"This isn't right and we're not going to let it happen."

1:07:10 > 1:07:13The prosecution's strategy seems to be to let the violence

1:07:13 > 1:07:15of the videotape speak for itself.

1:07:15 > 1:07:20But nobody is certain any more what that tape is saying to the jury.

1:07:21 > 1:07:25I had been telling my people at Time magazine,

1:07:25 > 1:07:27"There's something going on.

1:07:27 > 1:07:28"We need to pay attention.

1:07:30 > 1:07:33"There's a story here beyond this trial."

1:07:35 > 1:07:38I just sensed there was this unrest.

1:07:55 > 1:07:57The day started like any other day,

1:07:57 > 1:08:00but it really wasn't. We were waiting for the verdict to be

1:08:00 > 1:08:03handed down in the trial of the four white police officers

1:08:03 > 1:08:06that were charged with beating Rodney King.

1:08:06 > 1:08:08How are you feeling?

1:08:08 > 1:08:10No comment.

1:08:10 > 1:08:12I got up that morning, I said,

1:08:12 > 1:08:14"I got to go up there and see what's going on."

1:08:14 > 1:08:17So I got on the freeway and start looking for Simi Valley.

1:08:19 > 1:08:24It's an all-white town. I only saw white people out there that day.

1:08:25 > 1:08:30And they wasn't that kind to me when I was asking for directions.

1:08:33 > 1:08:35I wanted to be there to witness it.

1:08:35 > 1:08:40And I guess I thought that my being there was going to change something.

1:08:40 > 1:08:44We, the jury, in the above entitled action,

1:08:44 > 1:08:48find the defendant, Laurence M Powell, not guilty...

1:08:48 > 1:08:50COMMOTION

1:08:50 > 1:08:52BLEEP!

1:08:52 > 1:08:54Man, you got to be kidding!

1:08:54 > 1:08:58We, the jury, in the above entitled action, find the defendant,

1:08:58 > 1:09:02Theodore J Briseno, not guilty of the crime of assault

1:09:02 > 1:09:06by force likely to produce great bodily injury with a deadly weapon.

1:09:06 > 1:09:11This 29th day of April, 1992, signed by the foreman.

1:09:12 > 1:09:16We, the jury, in the above entitled action,

1:09:16 > 1:09:19find the defendant, Timothy E Wind,

1:09:19 > 1:09:21not guilty of the crime of assault

1:09:21 > 1:09:24by force likely to produce great bodily injury

1:09:24 > 1:09:26with a deadly weapon...

1:09:26 > 1:09:28I was sitting in the bureau the day of the verdict

1:09:28 > 1:09:31with all of my white colleagues and friends.

1:09:31 > 1:09:35And every time they said, "Not guilty"...

1:09:35 > 1:09:37..Stacey C Koon, not guilty...

1:09:37 > 1:09:40..what I heard was, "Fuck niggers."

1:09:40 > 1:09:41"Not guilty." "Fuck niggers."

1:09:41 > 1:09:44- HORNS HONK CROWD:- There's no peace!

1:09:44 > 1:09:46No justice!

1:09:46 > 1:09:49I was at Parker Center when the acquittals were announced.

1:09:49 > 1:09:53And I recall some high-fives and some fist-pumping in the air.

1:09:53 > 1:09:55I mean, there were clearly people who felt that the public

1:09:55 > 1:09:56misunderstood them,

1:09:56 > 1:10:01that the media misunderstood them and that the jury got it right.

1:10:01 > 1:10:03Your reaction to what has happened?

1:10:03 > 1:10:05Very happy.

1:10:05 > 1:10:07COMMOTION

1:10:07 > 1:10:11CROWD SHOUTING

1:10:11 > 1:10:15- LAPD are out there protecting us... - No...

1:10:15 > 1:10:16THEY ARGUE

1:10:16 > 1:10:20I wanted to believe that the system would work for black people

1:10:20 > 1:10:23in general, even though I knew often it doesn't.

1:10:23 > 1:10:26But this time, it should work, and it didn't.

1:10:26 > 1:10:29And all I felt, like, I just wanted to smack somebody white.

1:10:29 > 1:10:32COMMOTION

1:10:32 > 1:10:33Your skin colour determines

1:10:33 > 1:10:35what degree of justice you have these days.

1:10:37 > 1:10:41I don't think the community's going to take this lying down.

1:10:41 > 1:10:44I don't think this is going to be good.

1:10:44 > 1:10:47No justice in America, not for the blacks!

1:10:47 > 1:10:50The justice is for the other man, not for the brother, man!

1:10:52 > 1:10:56Pastor, your reaction after that first verdict was read?

1:10:56 > 1:10:59Our reaction was almost universal.

1:10:59 > 1:11:02Utter...pain.

1:11:02 > 1:11:05- CROWD CHANTS:- Justice! Justice! Justice!

1:11:05 > 1:11:09Rodney King did not have a choirboy's record,

1:11:09 > 1:11:12but Rodney King had the flesh and blood of decency

1:11:12 > 1:11:14and humanity in his heart.

1:11:14 > 1:11:19What they were beating is every black person in America.

1:11:19 > 1:11:21Don't lay down for this shit!

1:11:21 > 1:11:25We had an understanding that the night of the verdict,

1:11:25 > 1:11:28we would assemble at First AME Church.

1:11:29 > 1:11:32We'd been meeting with the Mayor, to get ready.

1:11:32 > 1:11:36This is some fucked up shit that happened, man. This is history.

1:11:36 > 1:11:38We go to Westwood. Brentwood. Whitewood.

1:11:38 > 1:11:44We were going to send out groups of young men to walk the streets

1:11:44 > 1:11:47and keep everything...in order.

1:11:47 > 1:11:50SIREN WAILS

1:11:53 > 1:11:58I had spent weeks talking to black clergy, gang members,

1:11:58 > 1:12:02and they were very up front about what they believed would happen.

1:12:02 > 1:12:05"Yeah, there's going to be violence."

1:12:06 > 1:12:11So we had everything prepared, we had the 'copter fully fuelled.

1:12:11 > 1:12:14It seemed like the only people that didn't know there would be a riot

1:12:14 > 1:12:16was the news media and the LAPD.

1:12:18 > 1:12:22You're looking at a live picture here at Normandie and Florence.

1:12:22 > 1:12:25There's been a mini riot at this location.

1:12:25 > 1:12:27There's now been a tactical alert.

1:12:27 > 1:12:32Officers have been ordered to stay out of this general area.

1:12:32 > 1:12:35We're going to try to get you more information on that.

1:12:36 > 1:12:38Even before the verdict,

1:12:38 > 1:12:41Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates was criticised for preparing

1:12:41 > 1:12:44for an arrest in the event four of his officers were acquitted.

1:12:44 > 1:12:49But when the rioting began, where were the police and firefighters?

1:12:49 > 1:12:51SHOUTING

1:12:55 > 1:12:58My most striking memory is members of the police commission desperately

1:12:58 > 1:13:01trying to find Gates, which is just shocking, if you think about it -

1:13:01 > 1:13:04the verdicts in the Rodney King case were coming down

1:13:04 > 1:13:05and the Chief was not at Parker Center.

1:13:05 > 1:13:08Gates had driven to this house in ritzy Brentwood

1:13:08 > 1:13:11to campaign against a police reform initiative.

1:13:11 > 1:13:13Fighting police reform.

1:13:13 > 1:13:15That's what he was doing.

1:13:15 > 1:13:18He abandoned his post

1:13:18 > 1:13:23and left his troops in a shameful state.

1:13:23 > 1:13:26SHOUTING

1:13:28 > 1:13:30The LAPD response was tepid.

1:13:32 > 1:13:35All of the media gets on the Police Department,

1:13:35 > 1:13:38the people are screaming, "We have an occupying force."

1:13:38 > 1:13:41"Well, gee, we don't want to look like an occupying force,

1:13:41 > 1:13:43"so maybe we'll just sit here till it blows over."

1:13:43 > 1:13:44That type of crap goes on.

1:13:46 > 1:13:47And we were furious.

1:13:55 > 1:13:57THEY SHOUT

1:14:01 > 1:14:03Chaos at this particular location...

1:14:04 > 1:14:08To see the very start of the violence was very troubling.

1:14:08 > 1:14:12What made it really troubling was there was no police presence.

1:14:12 > 1:14:15There's a van coming under attack. They're pulling the driver out

1:14:15 > 1:14:18of the van and they're kicking the driver and beating the driver.

1:14:18 > 1:14:22We captured what essentially became the bookend

1:14:22 > 1:14:24to the Rodney King beating.

1:14:24 > 1:14:26There's another driver badly beaten...

1:14:26 > 1:14:30In the case of Reginald Denny, we had black gang members

1:14:30 > 1:14:32beating a white man.

1:14:32 > 1:14:33Oh, look at that.

1:14:33 > 1:14:36Terrible! And there's no police presence down here.

1:14:36 > 1:14:38They will not enter the area.

1:14:39 > 1:14:43That was the most disgusting thing I've seen in my entire career.

1:14:43 > 1:14:46Two blocks away, we had a platoon of Metro Division.

1:14:46 > 1:14:48Could have cleared that intersection in a minute.

1:14:48 > 1:14:51But the commander there didn't want to release them to do it

1:14:51 > 1:14:53because of imagery, we're on live TV.

1:14:53 > 1:14:55We're seeing a dark day here in Los Angeles.

1:14:55 > 1:14:58The LAPD is nowhere to be found.

1:14:58 > 1:15:00So we're sitting there in our uniforms watching this poor

1:15:00 > 1:15:02truck driver get his head beat in.

1:15:02 > 1:15:06Nobody's doing a damn thing about it. We're screaming.

1:15:06 > 1:15:07Nobody would even move on it.

1:15:15 > 1:15:17How are you this evening?

1:15:17 > 1:15:18Angry.

1:15:21 > 1:15:24They're trying to tell us we didn't see what we saw!

1:15:24 > 1:15:25CHEERING

1:15:25 > 1:15:28We've been the victims of police brutality

1:15:28 > 1:15:30in this town for too long...

1:15:30 > 1:15:33DROWNED OUT BY CROWD

1:15:39 > 1:15:44- ..who we are! - DROWNED OUT BY CROWD

1:15:44 > 1:15:47DROWNED OUT BY CROWD

1:15:49 > 1:15:53Marc Brown, Channel 7, waved at the monitor and said,

1:15:53 > 1:15:55"The city's on fire.

1:15:55 > 1:15:58"It's on fire."

1:15:58 > 1:16:00And I looked at him and said, "My God!"

1:16:00 > 1:16:04I had no idea it was right across the street. Literally.

1:16:04 > 1:16:07The gas station was on fire.

1:16:13 > 1:16:17What I didn't anticipate, personally and professionally,

1:16:17 > 1:16:20was the response of the community.

1:16:23 > 1:16:27I went on the streets and Western Avenue was in flames.

1:16:28 > 1:16:31And this crowd is gathering.

1:16:31 > 1:16:34And the police have now come.

1:16:34 > 1:16:37And there's one guy and he's screaming his head off,

1:16:37 > 1:16:42"Burn, baby, burn. How you like me now, Mr Policeman?!"

1:16:46 > 1:16:48And I felt his pain.

1:16:53 > 1:16:55I just didn't get it.

1:16:55 > 1:16:57I just didn't understand burning down your own community.

1:16:59 > 1:17:01I didn't get what it proved.

1:17:06 > 1:17:09Here are people who feel like they have no statement,

1:17:09 > 1:17:12nobody's paying any attention to them.

1:17:12 > 1:17:15This is the only we way we can get any attention.

1:17:15 > 1:17:17SHOUTING

1:17:20 > 1:17:22As it got darker,

1:17:22 > 1:17:25a crowd began to gather out in front of the Police Department.

1:17:27 > 1:17:29It got increasingly unruly.

1:17:29 > 1:17:32Someone grabbed me and tore my shirt and said something about, you know,

1:17:32 > 1:17:35"You fucking newsman, why do you tell lies?"

1:17:40 > 1:17:43It is the most physically frightening situation

1:17:43 > 1:17:44that I've ever been part of.

1:17:55 > 1:17:58Guy pulls up and goes, "Whatever you do, don't go to the command post,

1:17:58 > 1:18:01"go to the police station down the street,

1:18:01 > 1:18:04"because it's very violent out there."

1:18:04 > 1:18:07I looked at him, I thought, "What a coward he is."

1:18:07 > 1:18:10Get in the car, make the first turn,

1:18:10 > 1:18:13and the car gets lit up by gunfire.

1:18:13 > 1:18:16So I go, "OK. Now I know what he's talking about."

1:18:16 > 1:18:19So take my .45 out, I put it on my lap,

1:18:19 > 1:18:21I took a big gulp of Copenhagen,

1:18:21 > 1:18:23stuck it down my mouth, turned off the lights

1:18:23 > 1:18:26and drove as fast as I could to the command post.

1:18:30 > 1:18:35Hindsight, the overall management could have been done much better.

1:18:41 > 1:18:44But once it got away from us...

1:18:46 > 1:18:48..we were cooked.

1:19:11 > 1:19:14- 911 emergency.- Yeah, can you send someone to my house?

1:19:14 > 1:19:18- What's the problem? - My ex-husband, or my husband,

1:19:18 > 1:19:20just broke into my house and he's ranting and raving.

1:19:20 > 1:19:23Now he's just walked out in the front yard.

1:19:23 > 1:19:25Has he been drinking or anything?

1:19:25 > 1:19:27No, but he's crazy.

1:19:27 > 1:19:29- Is he black, white or Hispanic? - Black.

1:19:29 > 1:19:33- What's he wearing right now? - Black pants and a golf shirt.

1:19:33 > 1:19:36- And you said he hasn't been drinking?- No.- Did he hit you?

1:19:36 > 1:19:40- No.- Does he have a restraining order against him?- No.

1:19:40 > 1:19:43- What's your name?- Nicole Simpson.

1:19:43 > 1:19:46- Your address?- 325 Gretna Green Way.

1:19:46 > 1:19:49- OK, we'll send police out. - Thank you.- Uh-huh.

1:19:52 > 1:19:56When Nicole first decided to leave OJ,

1:19:56 > 1:19:58she came to me.

1:19:58 > 1:20:00She said, "I want to move out."

1:20:00 > 1:20:03And at that time, I was doing real estate.

1:20:03 > 1:20:06And then we had to sell OJ on the idea.

1:20:06 > 1:20:09He was obsessed with controlling Nicole.

1:20:09 > 1:20:12I said, "Look, OJ, we'll get her a lease."

1:20:12 > 1:20:14He goes, "Three months."

1:20:14 > 1:20:19I said, "We'll get her a year lease. It'll be right nearby.

1:20:20 > 1:20:23"You can go to therapy and see if you can work things out.

1:20:23 > 1:20:26"But she needs her space."

1:20:26 > 1:20:28He really didn't want to do it.

1:20:40 > 1:20:44I think, for the first time, she felt free.

1:20:44 > 1:20:47It was like she just came into that sense of self,

1:20:47 > 1:20:51that she was really ready to do life for her and her kids.

1:20:53 > 1:20:55She responded great to being divorced.

1:20:57 > 1:20:59She was really enjoying her life,

1:20:59 > 1:21:03going out...and not being Mrs Simpson.

1:21:03 > 1:21:05Being Nicole Brown.

1:21:05 > 1:21:08She wanted to pursue her photography career

1:21:08 > 1:21:11and she wanted to have a normal life again.

1:21:17 > 1:21:20It was a beautiful day, and we skied down to the bottom of the mountain

1:21:20 > 1:21:23and everybody's gathering on the deck, having a great time.

1:21:23 > 1:21:27I looked across the deck and I said, "Wow, that is absolutely the most

1:21:27 > 1:21:29"stunning woman I've ever seen in my life.

1:21:29 > 1:21:32"I have to find a way to introduce myself to her." So I did.

1:21:33 > 1:21:37When I got back to LA several months later, we spent more time together.

1:21:37 > 1:21:40Her and her friends came by Mezzaluna one night.

1:21:40 > 1:21:42We're having a good time, and all of a sudden,

1:21:42 > 1:21:46I see the Bentley come screeching up to the front of the door.

1:21:46 > 1:21:49Comes in. Walks straight over to our table. Slams his hands down.

1:21:49 > 1:21:52Looks me straight in the eye and says,

1:21:52 > 1:21:54"I'm OJ Simpson and she's still my wife."

1:21:56 > 1:21:59I was sort of love-blind, so I didn't get up, I didn't run,

1:21:59 > 1:22:02I didn't back down, I just stood my ground from day one.

1:22:02 > 1:22:05And that's when she started to open up to me.

1:22:07 > 1:22:10She told me about years of abuse at his hands.

1:22:28 > 1:22:30He would beat her and lock her in closets at hotels

1:22:30 > 1:22:32because she asked where he was at -

1:22:32 > 1:22:34when he was out cheating on her.

1:22:42 > 1:22:45She was told how to look, how to wear her hair, told how to dress,

1:22:45 > 1:22:50told where to be, what time to be, how to be everything for OJ Simpson.

1:22:50 > 1:22:54Kind of a reverse slavery thing, Yeah. Very odd.

1:22:56 > 1:22:59"That's my property." He always used to say, "That's my booty."

1:23:01 > 1:23:04The two sides of OJ. The OJ that everybody sees on TV...

1:23:04 > 1:23:08..When the Cowboys brought in their big back, that they didn't make good

1:23:08 > 1:23:11tackles on him, so the coach was on their cases to make better tackles.

1:23:11 > 1:23:14As my family throw snowballs at me!

1:23:14 > 1:23:17That's not the OJ that there was behind closed doors

1:23:17 > 1:23:19and certainly not with her. And she told me that.

1:23:20 > 1:23:22"Don't ever be left alone with him.

1:23:22 > 1:23:25"You don't know what he's capable of."

1:23:27 > 1:23:31He had her followed and he would plant people in our group

1:23:31 > 1:23:36that would call him and tell him where we're going every night.

1:23:36 > 1:23:40He would either show up or have a spy planted there at the club

1:23:40 > 1:23:43so they could watch her every move.

1:23:43 > 1:23:47He never relinquished control. He never would really let go.

1:23:49 > 1:23:51He would tell me that Nicole tried to get him back,

1:23:51 > 1:23:55that she was actually taking golf lessons at Riviera.

1:23:55 > 1:23:58And he had a girlfriend, you know,

1:23:58 > 1:24:01Paula, and he seemed enthralled with her.

1:24:04 > 1:24:07OJ's personality had totally changed

1:24:07 > 1:24:10and I didn't think it was just the divorce.

1:24:10 > 1:24:12Because his womanising didn't change.

1:24:12 > 1:24:16He was truly the most jealous person I ever met in my life.

1:24:18 > 1:24:20He was as jealous as he was a good football player.

1:24:23 > 1:24:27I saw the anger, I saw the rage in his face on several occasions,

1:24:27 > 1:24:30at me, particularly, and at her.

1:24:33 > 1:24:37There was an incident where we went over to the Roxbury,

1:24:37 > 1:24:41a hot club at the time in LA, and we get in and she's dancing.

1:24:41 > 1:24:46Maybe 20, 30 minutes go by and I see her coming back towards me

1:24:46 > 1:24:49and she goes, "OJ's here."

1:24:49 > 1:24:54And I go, "Great(!) Again." She goes, "Let's just get out of here."

1:24:54 > 1:24:56I said, "I couldn't agree more."

1:24:56 > 1:24:59So we drive back to her house on Gretna Green.

1:25:01 > 1:25:03We go inside.

1:25:03 > 1:25:05And we became romantic.

1:25:06 > 1:25:09We were off in a private area, in one of the living rooms.

1:25:13 > 1:25:16And the next day, he came over and pushed in the back door,

1:25:16 > 1:25:19confronted both of us, and he wanted to talk to her alone.

1:25:19 > 1:25:23She was trembling, standing next to me, holding my hand, shaking.

1:25:23 > 1:25:26And she said, "Keith, I think you need to leave me alone with him

1:25:26 > 1:25:27"for a couple of minutes."

1:25:29 > 1:25:31I could hear him screaming at her,

1:25:31 > 1:25:35using disparaging terms about her, and me.

1:25:35 > 1:25:39They walked out and he was OJ again.

1:25:39 > 1:25:43Shook my hand. "Sorry, dude, no hard feelings.

1:25:43 > 1:25:47"I'm a very proud man." And he walked out the house.

1:25:48 > 1:25:52And she turned to me and she was white as a ghost.

1:25:52 > 1:25:56She said, "Oh, my God, Keith, he watched us."

1:25:59 > 1:26:03And everything changed from that point on.

1:26:03 > 1:26:06We realised we weren't safe any more.

1:26:06 > 1:26:10We realised that nothing was off-limits.

1:26:12 > 1:26:18I think she knew OJ was always a presence. She hated it.

1:26:18 > 1:26:23She couldn't even explore being single again and free

1:26:23 > 1:26:28and having fun, because everybody was still being manipulated by OJ.

1:26:32 > 1:26:35When he found out that she had been with Marcus, that's...

1:26:35 > 1:26:37That was a real issue.

1:26:37 > 1:26:39It's the time you look the competition right in the face

1:26:39 > 1:26:41and say, "Look, I'm better than you."

1:26:41 > 1:26:43- I'm better than you.- You may be younger, but you ain't better.

1:26:43 > 1:26:46- Who's starting?- And don't be taking my number, either.

1:26:46 > 1:26:49- Besides, I'm better looking.- I'm tired of you trying to be like me.

1:26:49 > 1:26:52I remember going with OJ to watch Marcus play at USC.

1:26:55 > 1:26:58He was kind of like a mentor to Marcus.

1:27:01 > 1:27:04They were extremely close. Extremely.

1:27:04 > 1:27:06Marcus got married at OJ's house.

1:27:08 > 1:27:11I think she always festered a crush for Marcus.

1:27:11 > 1:27:15And he was the only person in her life that was as famous

1:27:15 > 1:27:17and as strong as OJ.

1:27:19 > 1:27:22And so I think she felt, in a way, that she was safe with him.

1:27:26 > 1:27:30OJ said, "Marcus, we're SC guys.

1:27:30 > 1:27:33"We don't do that to each other, what the hell's wrong with you?"

1:27:35 > 1:27:38He was a younger version of OJ.

1:27:38 > 1:27:41He was almost like the newer, bigger, better version.

1:27:42 > 1:27:45I had no idea whatsoever

1:27:45 > 1:27:49that they were carrying on some kind of affair.

1:27:49 > 1:27:51I was a bit stunned.

1:27:52 > 1:27:55Did you ever have a romantic relationship with Nicole?

1:27:55 > 1:27:57No, I did not.

1:27:57 > 1:28:00And no kind of sexual or romantic involvement

1:28:00 > 1:28:02- did you ever have with her? - None whatsoever.

1:28:04 > 1:28:07I really do not want to talk about that at all.

1:28:09 > 1:28:11Sometimes I'll try to sing, but I'm not going to do it tonight.

1:28:11 > 1:28:13I got this tequila in me.

1:28:13 > 1:28:17The girl I came here with said to me, "Is this a blues place?"

1:28:17 > 1:28:20I said, "Oh, no, no, no. This is rhythm and blues."

1:28:20 > 1:28:24Speaking of that lady I was talking about...

1:28:24 > 1:28:27I'm sweaty. Watch her sing.

1:28:27 > 1:28:28Oh, my God...

1:28:31 > 1:28:35We're live right now all across America. She is my woman.

1:28:35 > 1:28:39I'm taking her tequila, that's why I'm not singing tonight.

1:28:40 > 1:28:43When they initially got back together,

1:28:43 > 1:28:45I was the first person she told about it.

1:28:46 > 1:28:50He had told her, "I'm changed, I'm a new man, let me prove this to you."

1:28:51 > 1:28:55She said, "We're going to date first and I'm not giving up my house,

1:28:55 > 1:28:57"and we're going to see how it goes."

1:28:57 > 1:29:01That was how they tried to reconcile.

1:29:01 > 1:29:04She said all she really ever wanted was her family.

1:29:07 > 1:29:10It's almost like she risked everything

1:29:10 > 1:29:12to have that unit back together.

1:29:19 > 1:29:24- 911 emergency.- Can you get someone over here now to 325 Gretna Green?

1:29:24 > 1:29:27- He's back. Please.- OK, what does he look like?- He's OJ Simpson.

1:29:27 > 1:29:31I think you know his record. Could you just send somebody over here?

1:29:31 > 1:29:33OK, what is he doing there?

1:29:33 > 1:29:36- He's just drove up again... - SHE SOBS

1:29:36 > 1:29:37Wait a minute, what kind of car...?

1:29:37 > 1:29:40We were filming another Naked Gun movie, and it was the first time

1:29:40 > 1:29:44I can remember him being just in one of the foulest moods ever.

1:29:45 > 1:29:47And he said it was just Nicole bullshit.

1:29:47 > 1:29:49First of fall, he broke the back door down to get in.

1:29:49 > 1:29:52- OK, wait a minute, what's your name?- Nicole Simpson.

1:29:52 > 1:29:55OK, is he the sportscaster or whatever?

1:29:55 > 1:29:57- Yeah.- OK...

1:29:57 > 1:29:59My ex-girlfriend approached him on the movie set

1:29:59 > 1:30:03and said some very disparaging things about Nicole and myself,

1:30:03 > 1:30:06so I knew that OJ was going to take it out on Nicole.

1:30:06 > 1:30:08- 911:- What is he doing? Is he threatening you?

1:30:08 > 1:30:11He's fucking going nuts.

1:30:11 > 1:30:14You're going to hear him in a minute. He's about to come in again.

1:30:14 > 1:30:16- OK, just stay on the line. - I don't want to stay on the line.

1:30:16 > 1:30:19- He's going to beat the shit out of me.- Wait, just stay on the line

1:30:19 > 1:30:23so we can know what's going on till the police get there, OK?

1:30:23 > 1:30:26It wasn't until years later that I actually sat down

1:30:26 > 1:30:28and listened to the 911 call.

1:30:28 > 1:30:32I knew different voices for Nicole, and she wasn't mad,

1:30:32 > 1:30:34she definitely wasn't drunk.

1:30:34 > 1:30:37She was terrified. And that was heartbreaking.

1:30:37 > 1:30:39That was heartbreaking.

1:30:39 > 1:30:41- 911:- OK, Nicole? - Uh-huh?

1:30:41 > 1:30:44- Does he have any weapons? - I don't know.

1:30:44 > 1:30:46- OK.- He went home, now he's back.

1:30:46 > 1:30:49The kids are upstairs sleeping and I don't want anything to happen.

1:30:49 > 1:30:52OK, just a moment.

1:30:52 > 1:30:55- INTERVIEWER:- When you hear OJ's voice, what do you hear?

1:30:56 > 1:30:57Rage.

1:31:07 > 1:31:10- 911:- Is he inside right now? - Yes, yes.- OK, just a moment.

1:31:16 > 1:31:19All units, domestic violence at...

1:31:19 > 1:31:21SHOUTING OVER PHONE

1:31:21 > 1:31:26OPERATOR AND NICOLE TALK AT ONCE

1:31:34 > 1:31:38Is he upset with something you did?

1:31:38 > 1:31:41A long time ago, it always comes back.

1:31:43 > 1:31:46- Has this happened before? - Many times.- OK.

1:31:50 > 1:31:53The police should be on the way. Just seems like a long time,

1:31:53 > 1:31:56cos it's kind of busy in that division right now.

1:32:02 > 1:32:07When she left him for good, she called me and she's like,

1:32:07 > 1:32:09"Yep, this is it."

1:32:09 > 1:32:12She said, "This is it. I'm done.

1:32:12 > 1:32:16"I'm done. I don't even... I have no feeling for him whatsoever any more.

1:32:16 > 1:32:18"It's just over."

1:32:18 > 1:32:21She was free and she was happy without him

1:32:21 > 1:32:25and I think he knew it was really over.

1:32:28 > 1:32:31The day she changed, it was like a light switch.

1:32:31 > 1:32:34He spiralled from that day on.

1:32:34 > 1:32:37Everything was different - who he was, that persona,

1:32:37 > 1:32:39everything was gone.

1:32:39 > 1:32:41She wasn't chasing him any more.

1:32:41 > 1:32:45And it spun him out.

1:32:46 > 1:32:50Did we all believe, right toward the very end, when they had split up

1:32:50 > 1:32:54after Mother's Day, that Nicole is not seeing Marcus again?

1:32:54 > 1:32:56I absolutely believe that she was.

1:32:56 > 1:33:01And OJ told Nicole, "You ever see Marcus again, I will kill you."

1:33:03 > 1:33:07This was obviously, "I'm going to get back at you, OJ,

1:33:07 > 1:33:10"I don't care what it takes, I'm going to humiliate you."

1:33:13 > 1:33:18If she did it, it was more for her own personal rebellion.

1:33:18 > 1:33:22It was more for her saying to herself,

1:33:22 > 1:33:25"I'm going to date who I want, I'm going to go where I want,

1:33:25 > 1:33:29"I'm going to be friends with who I want. I'm free.

1:33:29 > 1:33:33"You have lost me, OJ. Watch me run."

1:33:35 > 1:33:38I think there was something about her

1:33:38 > 1:33:41that was almost unattainable to him.

1:33:43 > 1:33:46Something that he couldn't quite control.

1:33:51 > 1:33:55And I think that that was part of the attraction.

1:33:55 > 1:33:59And I think, in the final analysis, that's what got her killed.
