0:01:39 > 0:01:41Do you think it's the same as Germany?

0:01:41 > 0:01:43I've known you for nearly 30 years

0:01:43 > 0:01:44and you've never gotten into second gear.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46I think you think the gears are decorative.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49There's nothing like a road trip to put the two of us

0:01:49 > 0:01:50in the festive mood.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54We've got the tinsel, we've got a few bits and bobs,

0:01:54 > 0:01:55a few surprises in the boot.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57I'm sitting on a couple of reindeer antlers,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59which, I have to say, is keeping me very awake.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03And this year we're planning a very "Mary" Christmas.

0:02:03 > 0:02:04Feels like we're missing somebody.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07There's room in the back. There's a little...a little nook.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21- Bezza!- You got here safely. - Come on, Bezza, in.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22Hello, darling!

0:02:22 > 0:02:25It's very, very good that you wore such a vivid coat, Bez.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- I know.- I can't reach you!

0:02:30 > 0:02:34- So nice to see you, Bez.- It's lovely to be back. The threesome.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38- Oh, the touch.- I would like all hands on the wheel, please, Sue.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Buckle up, Bezzie, because there's some hills coming.

0:02:41 > 0:02:42Well, you've certainly made an effort

0:02:42 > 0:02:44with all the Christmas decorations.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46This is how we normally roll with this, Bez. Always.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50We're in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, to give a wonderful group

0:02:50 > 0:02:54of people a big Christmas surprise.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56What are you going to wear, Bez? A bit of glitter?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59I thought I ought to have a bit of glitter and sparkle.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- Are we nearly there yet? - We're not quite there yet.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11We're heading to the village of Pentre to surprise a local hero.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14She thinks she's being filmed about the work she's been

0:03:14 > 0:03:15doing in her community.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Over the last few years, we've lost so much.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24We've lost our library, butcher's,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26both banks have closed, the school.

0:03:26 > 0:03:32In Pentre, I think life is a little bit tougher than other places.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36It's become run down since the coal mines and stuff have gone.

0:03:37 > 0:03:42We have high unemployment, we have low-income families.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46The heart of Pentre has been taken out.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48It used to be a lovely village.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52We've lost so much, but that's never stopped us, you know,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54we are a community of fighters.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58When Buffy spotted yet another abandoned building,

0:03:58 > 0:04:02she decided it was time to do battle for the people of Pentre.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05We needed a focal point for everybody to meet.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07When I saw the "For Sale" sign, then I thought,

0:04:07 > 0:04:09"Right, we're going to fight for that.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11"We will do it, and we will achieve it."

0:04:12 > 0:04:14After a well-fought campaign,

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Buffy convinced the council to hand over the keys.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20She begged and borrowed funding, scrubbed floors,

0:04:20 > 0:04:22painted walls and opened the doors.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28It's become important in a way that I never thought it would.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Buffy's centre is now a lifeline for all ages.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Without a school in the village, the kids club keeps friends together.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42When the centre opened, it was somewhere we could go

0:04:42 > 0:04:47and play with our friends, see them again, so we wouldn't be as sad.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50And bingo keeps the pensioners happy.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52- On its own, number seven.- Seven!

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Among the first through the door were Pentre matriarchs

0:04:57 > 0:04:58Marion and Eira.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- Oh, dear! - LAUGHTER

0:05:00 > 0:05:04If the centre wasn't open, there would be nowhere to go.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- We're all widows.- Yeah.- Children are all grown up and everything.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12It's better to be sitting in a room down there talking to people

0:05:12 > 0:05:15than sitting in the house saying nothing to nobody

0:05:15 > 0:05:17or just talking to yourself or the cat.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22We know that some of 'em survive on their pensions.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24We are the first point of contact.

0:05:24 > 0:05:29That cup of tea could mean the world to somebody.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33Pentre's pensioners were quick to make use of the centre,

0:05:33 > 0:05:35and youngsters like 16-year-old Daf soon followed.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41- You just came to bingo with me one day, didn't you?- Yeah.

0:05:41 > 0:05:46- And then...- And just stayed and, you know, didn't go home.- It's true.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53Daf is just 16 and he's finding his feet.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Mucking in at the centre has given him a boost.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57- HE LAUGHS - I knew I shouldn't have done that!

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Do you want me to put all these balls in disinfectant?

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Everything's got to be perfect with Daf.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06He's forever washing and hoovering.

0:06:06 > 0:06:07He's a really big help.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11The centre has, like, changed me a lot.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13It's made me, like, confident.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Do you need your nails done, Margaret?

0:06:15 > 0:06:18The centre gives everybody a bit of hope, really.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22The centre is so popular it's open all hours,

0:06:22 > 0:06:27and it relies on donations and the hard graft of local volunteers.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31They're absolutely the best kind of people.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33They come along and help out,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36bucket collecting or raffles or anything.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41They're brilliant. A real important part of the centre.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46And Buffy's right-hand woman is local mum Lynne.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Did anybody order a plain cheese toastie?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53They do tease me about my cooking. I am, I've got to admit,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55hands up, I'm a shocking cook. I am.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57I always have been.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00This is why Lynne is not allowed in the kitchen.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03It's well done!

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Catering might be off limits for Lynne, but Christmas is coming

0:07:06 > 0:07:08and although money is tight...

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Ah, thank you very much. Thank you.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13..the centre doors will be open

0:07:13 > 0:07:16and they'll be putting on a Christmas spread.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19You feel for people come round at Christmas time now.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22We try to do a lot with very little,

0:07:22 > 0:07:27anything for a family to survive over Christmas.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Thank you very much.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33I feel responsible for everybody in Pentre, I think! I know it's stupid.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Little does Buffy know that this year, she won't be doing it alone.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Us three muppets are on our way with a surprise offer of help

0:07:44 > 0:07:48to throw a big community Christmas bash.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51They spend their entire days doing good for other people

0:07:51 > 0:07:54and I would love it to just come in and do some good for them.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Bez, any Christmas treats up your sleeve?

0:08:00 > 0:08:04- Mince pies and turkeys.- Oh, yes.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Oh, it's lovely to be the three of us. I love it.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Here we are. We're here.

0:08:09 > 0:08:10HORN HONKS

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Thank you, Bezzie.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Amazing.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16We're keeping Queen B under wraps for now,

0:08:16 > 0:08:19and while she heads off to get the party food plans underway,

0:08:19 > 0:08:21we're heading to the centre.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27We should have the party on the last day.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Let's go now.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32The gang have no idea we're about to gate-crash.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34It's Monday morning and they're busy planning

0:08:34 > 0:08:37for their Christmas get-together.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Let's talk about the food, then.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42- We've got ham, cheese, sausage rolls...- Hot turkey rolls.- Oh, yeah.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Hopefully we'll give them the shock of their lives.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49- WHISPERS:- Go undercover, mate. Go undercover. We mustn't be seen.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Marshmallows, chocolate fingers.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Who's going to do Father Christmas?

0:08:55 > 0:08:56Morning.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Hello.- Hello.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- Oh, my God!- Oh, my God!

0:09:02 > 0:09:05- Anyone for a cup of tea? - I'll put a brew on.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08You haven't come to judge anybody's cooking, have you?!

0:09:08 > 0:09:09- You must be Lynne. - How do you know?

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I have my spies, Lynne. Hello, darling.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Can we pull up a chair and join you?

0:09:19 > 0:09:21There is a Christmas do in the offing.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24We've basically come to volunteer our services

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and see how we can help.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29What we need to do is help you make this the best party ever.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33- Shall I take notes? - Yeah.- I'm going to be secretary.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Can we just go home, then?

0:09:35 > 0:09:36LAUGHTER

0:09:36 > 0:09:38You should have seen my face.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39I was, like...

0:09:40 > 0:09:43I was thinking to myself, "Hang on now a minute, Lynne."

0:09:43 > 0:09:46I really can't believe it. I got no words.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49We've got a few surprises up our sleeve,

0:09:49 > 0:09:51but if we're to get this right,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54we need to know what's expected of Buffy's community bash.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Tell us about this party. How many people have you got coming?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59There's about 60.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01What kind of age range?

0:10:01 > 0:10:04From birth all the way up to 93.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05So who's chief chef?

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Oh, Lynne is.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Oh, no! - LAUGHTER

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Lynne is frightened of butter.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14- When you say "frightened"... - Oh, yeah, seriously frightened.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16So if I put butter here, what would be your reaction?

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- Oh, no...- You've seen it. Even pretend butter, she was flinching?

0:10:19 > 0:10:21We call Lynne Can't Cook, Won't Cook.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26I'm so overwhelmed because nobody ever wants to know

0:10:26 > 0:10:29so for somebody to actually listen to our story and think,

0:10:29 > 0:10:34"These people really could do with a helping hand" is absolutely amazing.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Party for 60, small cooker.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Yeah, that's what we find hard. We haven't got a lot.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Buffy and Lynne perform mini-miracles out of here every day.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47They were handed the building nearly two years ago

0:10:47 > 0:10:50and it's been a case of making the most of what they've got.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54This room was the shower.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56There's a slight musk to it, isn't there?

0:10:56 > 0:10:59I've got to light a candle because it's quite stinky.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03What it takes to keep a building like this going is hard...

0:11:03 > 0:11:06..and I get home and I start looking for funding again.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10It's so hand-to-mouth, it's so stressful.

0:11:10 > 0:11:11It is, it is stressful,

0:11:11 > 0:11:16but the centre has become so important to the community.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- What drives that?- We've lost so much, and we really have,

0:11:19 > 0:11:20but we'll always fight.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23How many hours do you do unpaid here?

0:11:23 > 0:11:27On a bad week, 40. We're not paid.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29People that come here to volunteer, they don't have to.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31We go above and beyond every day.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34In quite a cold, deeply musty shower cubicle.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- You know, it's essentially the set of Psycho you're working in.- It is!

0:11:37 > 0:11:40And that's a lot on your little shoulders, isn't it?

0:11:40 > 0:11:44I call us the little volunteer army, cos that's what we are.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Buffy's youngest recruit, Daf, has got word of our arrival.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Hello.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56How you doing? Good to see you.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58I'm Sue, darling.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59- Do you want a cup of tea, love? - Yeah.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Come on, then. Let's get the old kettle on.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04They're making me a cup of tea, which I've never had before,

0:12:04 > 0:12:05made a cup of tea for me.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08I was, like, mind-blown.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12- Basically, they think that all the surprise is...- That we're it.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Yeah, they think that we're it.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16There was a little bit of disappointment in their eyes.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18There was, there was a slight, "Ohh..."

0:12:18 > 0:12:20They know they're having a party. They think it's going to

0:12:20 > 0:12:22be in the community centre right there.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27What they don't know is, we've taken over the park near the centre

0:12:27 > 0:12:30and Christmas party plans have already begun.

0:12:31 > 0:12:36We're going to throw the biggest bash Pentre has ever seen.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40The cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake is Mary.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43And she's been in our pop-up kitchen cooking-up a taster menu

0:12:43 > 0:12:46for Buffy and the gang.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I've tried to get together here a sample of what I think

0:12:49 > 0:12:51a perfect Christmas meal is.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55I can't wait to show Buffy and her helpers.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Now it's time to let the gang into our secret and reveal

0:13:00 > 0:13:04just who we've lined up to cater for their Christmas get-together.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09Right, keep up, gang, come on. Let's get the pace up. No time to lose.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12It's going to be as traditional as we can make it -

0:13:12 > 0:13:16turkey, buttered carrots, not forgetting the cranberry sauce,

0:13:16 > 0:13:20but there's no way I can do it on my own for all that great number.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Well, Daf's armed with a GCSE in catering and as he's

0:13:23 > 0:13:27a Mary Berry superfan, we're sure he'll be only too pleased to help.

0:13:29 > 0:13:30What's happening?

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- This way, lads.- Through the gates. - Thank you.- Come on, this way.

0:13:38 > 0:13:39Mary Berry's here!

0:13:39 > 0:13:41SHE GASPS

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

0:13:44 > 0:13:47She doesn't bite. We've taken her teeth out so she's all right.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51- This is Mary.- Now, Buffy, you are the leader of the band.

0:14:29 > 0:14:34- Buffy will have a day off, so, Daf, will you be my sous-chef?- Yep!

0:14:34 > 0:14:35- I was, like... - HE GASPS

0:14:35 > 0:14:37"There's Mary Berry!"

0:14:37 > 0:14:38- And I was, like... - HE GASPS

0:14:38 > 0:14:40I'm a really big fan.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- Are you all on to help me?- Yes. - Absolutely, Mary.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46We'll work as a team, we'll work as a brigade. Now, Lynne.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50Lynne, this is going to be a very, very speedy learning curve.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53- We'll train you up. - Oh, everybody's going to love it.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Nothing ever happened in the community for us here like this.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00When the children see this - and the older generation -

0:15:00 > 0:15:03they're going to be so over the moon. It's going to be brilliant.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06We never expected that we would be

0:15:06 > 0:15:08- cooking with Mary Berry this Christmas.- No, no.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12- We thought we'd be making our turkey baps as usual.- Yes, yes.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- This is going to be absolutely mega. - Mega.

0:15:16 > 0:15:21In 48 hours from now, we'll deliver Christmas lunch on an epic scale

0:15:21 > 0:15:24and pull off a community centre knees-up

0:15:24 > 0:15:27to make Buffy and her gang proud.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30So tonight, Bez, we sleep. We get a lot of sleep.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32I'm sensing tomorrow's going to be quite busy.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Can I just say, this sounds like the battle cry

0:15:34 > 0:15:35from the opening of Gladiator?

0:15:35 > 0:15:38"Tonight we sleep, for tomorrow we wake as gods!"

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Pentre's new brigade head home.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47We're keeping the plans for the big Christmas bash

0:15:47 > 0:15:51a surprise for all the guests so, it's hush-hush for now.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55It's going to be hard not to tell my nan,

0:15:55 > 0:16:01but to keep it a secret, I'll have to keep my excitement under control.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Hello. Have you had a good day?

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Yeah, just been up the centre.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Are we playing bingo Wednesday?

0:16:08 > 0:16:11Um, I'm not sure what I've got in mind.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15- OK.- Yeah...

0:16:17 > 0:16:21MUSIC: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! by Dean Martin

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Today, party preparations begin

0:16:23 > 0:16:27and, for once, it's not all on Buffy's shoulders.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31And there's another huge surprise that she knows nothing about.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- Big day, this, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36I can hear the whirrings of a big tool.

0:16:36 > 0:16:37But enough about me.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42We've nicked the keys from Buffy

0:16:42 > 0:16:45and banned her from the building for the next 24 hours.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Hi, guys. Morning.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Oh, there's some heavy electrical cable insulation going on.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55This gang of local professionals are going to supercharge

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Buffy's plans for the building.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00When she took this place on, it was a derelict daycare centre.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04We were like, "It's not great,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06"but we can definitely make something out of it."

0:17:06 > 0:17:09We had a very small amount of money to spend on the building

0:17:09 > 0:17:13and I kept thinking to myself, "How are we going to pay for paint

0:17:13 > 0:17:16"and how are we going to pay for this? And we need new flooring..."

0:17:16 > 0:17:20We all chipped in a couple of pounds and painted the walls.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23It was just sheer determination.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26Buffy has made a very little go a long way, but this is

0:17:26 > 0:17:30a centre still in need of a lot and we want to ease Buffy's load,

0:17:30 > 0:17:34so we're revamping the kitchen and bringing in some brand-new kit.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38How big's the dishwasher going to be? Is it a full-sizer or a half?

0:17:38 > 0:17:39- Full-sized dishwasher.- Oh, good.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43There's going to be a very happy woman when she sees the dishwasher.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- She may well touch you. - What are you doing there, my love?

0:17:46 > 0:17:49- We're putting new waste in. - Oh, it's for sewage.

0:17:49 > 0:17:50Are you putting a loo in here as well?

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Oh, no, it's for the kitchen sink.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Oh, it's for the sink. OK. Sorry, love.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56What it's great to do is to pop a loo just facing that way

0:17:56 > 0:17:58with a sink next to it.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00Where's the oven going to go?

0:18:00 > 0:18:02Next to the toilet, mate.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04It's a classic formation, it's toilet, dishwasher, oven.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11All this work will help Buffy's plan to future-proof her centre.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14Our plans are to open a community cafe

0:18:14 > 0:18:17to generate more income, which is important, obviously.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22When you get a functioning cafe environment and you get a

0:18:22 > 0:18:24- proper oven in there, you can charge.- Yeah.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Not very much, and that means that the place

0:18:26 > 0:18:28can be more self-sustaining.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32And delivering a community cafe isn't the only one of Buffy's wishes

0:18:32 > 0:18:33we want to grant.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37One day, I will have a real office, I hope.

0:18:37 > 0:18:42If we got the funding to replace this room, it will be brilliant,

0:18:42 > 0:18:45but it serves a purpose at the moment and that's fine.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48We make the best out of every situation.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50There's the shower cubicle.

0:18:50 > 0:18:51This place reeks of damp.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53What we're going to do is take that alcove

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- and make some sort of storage there. - Yeah.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59On a day-to-day level, she's in here

0:18:59 > 0:19:01dealing with really, sort of, tricky things -

0:19:01 > 0:19:04accounts, raising money, raising money,

0:19:04 > 0:19:07dealing with the council, you know, it's a stressful job she's got.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10It needs to be a haven, somewhere that she actually likes to be,

0:19:10 > 0:19:12do you know what I mean?

0:19:12 > 0:19:16The guys have their work cut out - they have less than 24 hours

0:19:16 > 0:19:19to pull off this particular Christmas miracle.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22There is a lot going on in there, mate.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24- There's a lot of testosterone in there.- Oh, it's great.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- I have to say, it really raises the pulse, doesn't it?- Yes.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30There's definitely a hormonal sea change when you enter that room.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32There's a musk and a lot of high-vis,

0:19:32 > 0:19:35- the combination of which is very alluring.- Very alluring.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Just around the corner from the centre, Daf is getting ready

0:19:42 > 0:19:46to spend the day with his all-time favourite food pin-up.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50To cook with Mary Berry is a lot of pressure.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53I think I've only cooked for, like, three, four,

0:19:53 > 0:19:59so to cook for 70, maybe more, is a lot,

0:19:59 > 0:20:03but it's nice to be able to cook something for my gran

0:20:03 > 0:20:05that I've never done before.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Daf and the gang serve up tonnes of sandwiches

0:20:08 > 0:20:10and gallons of tea at the centre.

0:20:10 > 0:20:14Last Christmas, they worked flat out to put on a spread for the regulars.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18On a Christmas time, we all sit together in the big room

0:20:18 > 0:20:20and put a big table out.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23We have hot turkey rolls and mince pies.

0:20:23 > 0:20:28From my heart, I really want to make this a memorable Christmas.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32Last year, the celebration was buns with slices of turkey.

0:20:32 > 0:20:37This year, every table will be brought a beautiful turkey.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40It will be the talk of the town for a long time.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44Buffy's got the day off, but I've got the rest of her gang to help.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46We have plenty of prep ahead.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48Well, tomorrow's the great day.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Have you all cooked turkeys before?

0:20:50 > 0:20:53- No.- No.- Do you enjoy cooking?

0:20:53 > 0:20:58I do enjoy it, but I can't do it. I can't cook. I'm rubbish.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01Buffy, usually, when she goes away for her summer holidays,

0:21:01 > 0:21:02she has to FaceTime me

0:21:02 > 0:21:07so she can talk me through cutting, you know, the tomatoes, cucumber.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10- Does she put notices up for you? - Yeah.

0:21:10 > 0:21:11LAUGHTER

0:21:11 > 0:21:14It's a bit like a Sunday roast when you have a chicken

0:21:14 > 0:21:16so don't be frightened of it.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19What I'm doing is, I'm pushing my fingers up there.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23If I can get some butter up here and some lemon

0:21:23 > 0:21:26and a little bit of fresh thyme, it'll give real flavour

0:21:26 > 0:21:30and it really keeps the bird beautifully moist.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33So there we are. Now, can you do your turkeys?

0:21:36 > 0:21:38My hands are too small!

0:21:38 > 0:21:41The gang don't often cook from scratch at the centre,

0:21:41 > 0:21:45so we're using a foolproof method to guarantee that we deliver

0:21:45 > 0:21:47tasty birds to the table.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51So I'm going to take a few pieces of thyme. Isn't that lovely?

0:21:51 > 0:21:54And then just put a few sprigs up there.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56So will you pull this out when it's cooked?

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Like, all the herbs, pull them back out?

0:21:58 > 0:22:01No, you can just pull the bits of stick and the leaves will come off.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05- Right.- It won't hurt anybody, but it'll give a great flavour.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07How did you feel last night when you went?

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Were you a bit nervous?

0:22:09 > 0:22:11I didn't sleep a lot,

0:22:11 > 0:22:13cos I feel like it's a lot of pressure on me.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15I don't want to let anybody down now.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18You won't let anybody down, of course you won't.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20It's going to be a treat for them tomorrow.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- It's a treat for us to know how to do it.- Yeah.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Well, it just makes all the difference.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30I felt a bit out of my comfort zone, I think,

0:22:30 > 0:22:33cos I'm rubbish at doing stuff like this, ain't I?

0:22:35 > 0:22:39I think Lynne can do anything she puts her mind to

0:22:39 > 0:22:41and I'm hoping that cooking Christmas lunch

0:22:41 > 0:22:45for the centre regulars will give her just a little more confidence.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- It's a great gang you've got here. - Oh, yeah.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51Buffy seems to have had this wonderful effect

0:22:51 > 0:22:54on so many people, getting everybody together.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56She's brilliant at things like that.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58When the centre came about, I didn't want to do it first of all.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01It was quite a low time for me.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04When I had my son Jayden, I was a single mother

0:23:04 > 0:23:09and my mother got taken ill, and she was diagnosed with cancer.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14I had to give up my job to become a full-time carer.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16A full-time carer for your mum?

0:23:16 > 0:23:18For my mother, yeah.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22And when she finally passed away,

0:23:22 > 0:23:26my confidence just took a knock back.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- You lost confidence.- Yes, I did.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33Buffy made me feel good about myself.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35She made me feel that I could do it.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37It was taking your mind off it.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41And you were helping other people.

0:23:41 > 0:23:42This has given you a lift as well.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44It has, definitely.

0:23:44 > 0:23:49I just can't wait now for tomorrow, to see everybody's faces,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51you know, both young and old.

0:23:51 > 0:23:52They're such lovely people.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54For you to come and do this is...

0:23:54 > 0:23:56I can't wait to see their faces.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58We feel that you deserve it,

0:23:58 > 0:24:02having created something from very little money

0:24:02 > 0:24:05and with all the enthusiasm of all your volunteers and helpers.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Not only is it for all the visitors that are going to come,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10it's for you as well.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12We're thanking all of you.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14I'm still a bit star-struck myself!

0:24:16 > 0:24:19MUSIC: Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

0:24:23 > 0:24:26The community centre Christmas party is the biggest get-together

0:24:26 > 0:24:31of the year and we need to make this one the best ever.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34It's all guns blazing. It's going to be really great.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Fantastic food, all the community coming together

0:24:37 > 0:24:38like one big family.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42We want to give this place more sparkle than Santa's grotto

0:24:42 > 0:24:47and centre regulars Marion and Eira have been let in on our

0:24:47 > 0:24:50secret plans and have rocked up to lend a hand.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51Oh, it's come out, look!

0:24:51 > 0:24:54When the centre opened, well, we were glad

0:24:54 > 0:24:59because we'd been fighting to have some life brought back to Pentre.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01It's a good atmosphere.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04It's the feeling of a community getting together.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07We're getting the enjoyment of it,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10so it's only fair that we put something back in.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13And we're here to do our bit and we might need

0:25:13 > 0:25:16a bit of help on the Christmas cracker crafting front.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Now, all right, we're on cracker duty.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20All I'm interested in is what's going inside.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22- Have we got good prizes? - Have we got some jokes?

0:25:22 > 0:25:24- We've got a couple of jokes.- Uh-huh.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26All right, so we need a production line.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29I've got a regionally specific joke here.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31How do Welsh people eat cheese?

0:25:31 > 0:25:33- Caerphilly.- Yes!

0:25:33 > 0:25:34Boom.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Carefully. Caerphilly.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- I don't get that! - Caerphilly.- Caerphilly.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42"Caerphilly" sounds like "carefully".

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Oh, yeah.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Why do birds fly south in the winter?

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Yeah, go on, tell us.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49It's too far to walk.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51LAUGHTER AND GROANING

0:25:51 > 0:25:54I like that. That's my type of joke.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57What do elves do after school?

0:25:57 > 0:25:58- Gnomework.- Good.- Oh!

0:25:58 > 0:26:01Oh, I said homework.

0:26:01 > 0:26:02Can I just say, this is the joke?

0:26:02 > 0:26:05- I've been thinking of this for the last 45 minutes.- OK.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07How did Santa give the weather forecast

0:26:07 > 0:26:09to somebody that he was quote fond of?

0:26:09 > 0:26:11"It's going to reindeer." Come on.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13That's the worst joke ever.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Shall I leave? I'm going to actually leave. I'm going to leave...

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Eira and Marion, they're inseparable, that pair.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23They're joined at the hip.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27They are marvellous, those two. They are marvellous.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31So how come you got so close? What connected you?

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Well, it was when our husbands died.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37- How old were you, if you don't mind me asking?- I was 57.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39- That's no age, is it?- No.

0:26:39 > 0:26:40I was 55.

0:26:40 > 0:26:44- You were 55 when you were widowed? - Yeah, yeah.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46I don't know if they said to you,

0:26:46 > 0:26:50but I lost my daughter in July this year.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53- I'm really sorry. That's really tough.- Yeah.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57Well, it's my second daughter, cos my middle one,

0:26:57 > 0:27:01youngest daughter, she had a brain tumour and she died at 29,
