0:01:06 > 0:01:11..flying doctor Jez fights to save the biker who was wearing this helmet...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14He's in a poorly way. He's in bad shape.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16- How's that leg?- I broke it.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19..a French tourist falls on a cliff-top path,

0:01:19 > 0:01:22but treatment is 500 miles away...

0:01:22 > 0:01:27and a runaway truck brings devastation to a housing estate.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29His breathing's not very good at the moment.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41Meet my friend Annie. She doesn't say much but she's a life-saver.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44She's helped thousands of emergency service workers around the world

0:01:44 > 0:01:48learn CPR, or the kiss of life, as it used to be known.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50I learned my first aid with Annie,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54but now a new campaign to encourage all of us to have a go at CPR -

0:01:54 > 0:01:59without any training at all - is having remarkable results.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02There are times in life where being tough comes in handy.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Say some geezer collapses in front of you - what do you do?

0:02:06 > 0:02:08We need a volunteer that ain't breathing.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12It's been watched by more than one and a half million people on YouTube

0:02:12 > 0:02:15and seen by many more on the TV.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19You push hard and fast here on the sovereign, to Stayin' Alive.

0:02:19 > 0:02:20# Ha, ha, ha, ha... #

0:02:20 > 0:02:23This memorable ad is all about encouraging people

0:02:23 > 0:02:26to do basic chest compressions

0:02:26 > 0:02:29if they come across someone whose heart has stopped.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Push hard and fast to Stayin' Alive.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36It's not as hard as it looks.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40The idea is that this basic message will stay in people's heads,

0:02:40 > 0:02:41just in case they ever need it.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45And today in Ripon, one of the UK's smallest cities,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48that's exactly what happened.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Have you got details on this job we're attending?

0:02:50 > 0:02:55'98, yeah, roger. He's arrested again so they've gone back into CPR

0:02:55 > 0:02:59'and there's a landing site right next to them in a park, over.'

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Yeah, could be a multitude of things. Either road up,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05- none of them's good, are they?- No.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Paramedics Darren and Paul aren't optimistic

0:03:08 > 0:03:10because they know the facts.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Out of every hundred people who have a cardiac arrest,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16fewer than ten survive to leave hospital.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20- Were you the first to find him...? - I was the first to find him on the site.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25Whether patients survive can be down to how soon someone starts CPR.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29- Wasn't talking at all, no. - When you first found him, he was unconscious?- Yeah.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33And today, 67-year-old Wyn Jones

0:03:33 > 0:03:36has had his heart attack in front of the right people.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37He's had four shots.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40'We came round the corner and saw that, er,

0:03:40 > 0:03:43'you could see a bike hanging up in the road,'

0:03:43 > 0:03:46so we stopped just to check that everything was OK -

0:03:46 > 0:03:48if there was anything we could do to help.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52And other cars had stopped, but other cars actually drove off in front of him

0:03:52 > 0:03:55and left him, kind of, on the ground.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58And then the guys started CPR and, obviously,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01some soldiers were passing and they've stopped to help.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- Do you want to swap, mate, or are you all right?- I'm...- Are you sure?

0:04:04 > 0:04:07So, three adrenaline, one amiodarone.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Two adrenaline.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13Suzanne and her husband started doing chest compressions

0:04:13 > 0:04:16before a group of soldiers from the local barracks took over -

0:04:16 > 0:04:18and they knew what to do because of Vinnie Jones

0:04:18 > 0:04:21and his life-saving commercial.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Nobody bothered with the breaths.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27You know, the advert Vinnie Jones has done recently where you just press hard and fast -

0:04:27 > 0:04:31literally, that's all they've done, until the ambulance crew got here.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Do you want me to come to that top end, bud, and we'll have a look at this tube?

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- Yeah. It's all right. - Wyn, your wife's here.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Wyn's wife has just arrived.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42But her husband is still not responding.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- Are you all right sorting that, bud, for us? Nice one.- I'm with you.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I'm with you, we're with you. We're going to Australia - don't you worry.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- Australia, Wyn - listen. - Yeah, going to Australia, Wyn.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54As well as the continuous chest compressions,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57he's been given four high-voltage electric shocks

0:04:57 > 0:05:00to try and knock his heart back into rhythm.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03All right, stand clear, everybody. Keep your hands off. Hands off.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Come on, boy.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07But they've not worked.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- Yeah.- Yeah, go for another shot. So it's his fifth shot, yeah?

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Come on, darling. Come on. One more go, darling. One more go.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- Give it one more go. - It's grade-four tube, is that.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21- All right, stand clear, everybody. - Keep your hands off. Hands off.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- Come on, boy.- Good lad! - Keep going, mate.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27- Come on, mate.- Come on, my boy. You're winning the race. You are.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28Do a bit of CPR for us.

0:05:28 > 0:05:33They say survival at times like this can be down to having the will to live

0:05:33 > 0:05:36and, if encouragement is what Wyn needs, there's no shortage here.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41- Come on, Wyn.- Come on, darling, please. Just keep on.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44- Just keep on, Wyn. You're fine. - Come on, mate.- You are wonderful.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47You're going to survive. This is good. It's all right.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52It's now been nearly 20 minutes since Wyn was first found on the roadside

0:05:52 > 0:05:54and, still, his heart isn't beating.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59And you're the lovely boy who looks after me. Just think about that. I need you to live.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Well done, pal. You're doing really well.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04If he doesn't recover soon, the paramedics will have no choice

0:06:04 > 0:06:05but to stop.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06Come on, sweetheart.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Come on, darling. Come on, darling. You're fine.

0:06:17 > 0:06:23You'll be amazed how small a space the helimed pilots can squeeze their helicopters into.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25A large back garden will do at a pinch,

0:06:25 > 0:06:30but there are some parts of the North where helipads are very hard to find.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35The Derbyshire Peak District is one of the trickiest landscapes

0:06:35 > 0:06:38the helimed pilots have to deal with.

0:06:38 > 0:06:43It's more than a century since many of its valleys were flooded to form reservoirs.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48Sometimes the villages swept away to feed the thirst of Sheffield reappear.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51But when it comes to finding somewhere to land,

0:06:51 > 0:06:57the helimed team often has to choose between a steep hillside, water or woodland.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Are we going to need to land on a road? Can we find out how serious it is, or not?

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Unless they shut the road, I can't see an obvious place to land.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08It looks like there's a bobby coming onto the far side of the bridge, to shut the road.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Yeah, there's a member of public stood there.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14You've got low wires this side of the reservoir, Andy.

0:07:14 > 0:07:19I'll just stay at ground idle till we know how bad it is, Graham, OK?

0:07:22 > 0:07:25I'm just going to move it forward a bit so you've got...

0:07:25 > 0:07:26Clear this side.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29OK, you are clear out? Doors open.

0:07:30 > 0:07:35Today, there's been a serious motorcycle accident on the A628,

0:07:35 > 0:07:39the Woodhead Pass that carves its way through the Pennines.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42High-speed round this bend. Into that sign there.

0:07:42 > 0:07:47Flying Doctor Jez Pinnell, the helimed team's medical director,

0:07:47 > 0:07:49has driven from his home near by.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51His skills as a hospital anaesthetist

0:07:51 > 0:07:54are about to come in very useful.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55Head injuries, facial injuries,

0:07:55 > 0:07:59injury around his neck. Chest injury.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Possible pelvis and lower-leg injuries. So he's in a poorly way.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04He's in bad shape.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07David O'Connor is very badly injured.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10He's come off his high-powered Yamaha R1 racing bike,

0:08:10 > 0:08:14capable of 186 miles per hour.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18As it was going round the corner, his rear wheel locked up

0:08:18 > 0:08:21and he hit the kerb, went over the handlebars

0:08:21 > 0:08:24crashed into that sign there and rolled back down onto the road.

0:08:24 > 0:08:25He wasn't responsive.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30He was breathing very, very heavily, which was good, and there was a lot of blood coming from his face.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34His helmet was all smashed open. But he was breathing, which is good.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36David, nice and still.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39'Luckily, there was a nurse in one of the cars nearby.'

0:08:39 > 0:08:42She started trying to get him to respond -

0:08:42 > 0:08:44she knew what she was doing.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47And then a fireman came past and he helped and then...

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Then a, er... And then there was a doctor.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54- Just relax. David, just relax. - David, something just to relax you.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Some medication there, just to take the edge off. That's it.

0:08:57 > 0:09:02The A628 is the UK's fifth most dangerous road,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04according to a recent survey.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Bikers like David are among its most numerous victim.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09That'll be fantastic.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13And do you want the traction splint on that?

0:09:13 > 0:09:14There's a pelvic splint, as well.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Doctor Jez is concerned that the biker's head wound alone

0:09:17 > 0:09:19could kill him.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Despite his helmet, he's showing all the signs of a brain injury.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24That's my knee - sorry.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27- OK?- We're on.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29That's definitely gone. This femur...

0:09:29 > 0:09:31That femur's definitely gone.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Jez is a highly experienced anaesthetist

0:09:33 > 0:09:38and he knows that to give David the best possible chance of survival,

0:09:38 > 0:09:40he must put him to sleep here and now.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44It will prevent pressure building up inside his skull.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Dave? Open your eyes, stick your tongue out for me.

0:09:47 > 0:09:53It's a process known as RSI, or rapid sequence induction, and it's risky.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56But it may be their patient's only hope -

0:09:56 > 0:10:02and David is about to get a general anaesthetic in the middle of a Pennine road.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13It's amazing how much closer to the rest of Europe we are now.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15You can catch a train to France,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18get a job in Germany or collect your pension in Spain.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20But when it comes to health,

0:10:20 > 0:10:24it's not just the language barrier that makes life difficult.

0:10:25 > 0:10:30Whitby is one of the UK's most picturesque seaside towns.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Visitors from all over the world come for the history -

0:10:33 > 0:10:34and the fish and chips.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38But really adventurous holiday-makers bring their boots,

0:10:38 > 0:10:43to experience the spectacular cliff-top path to nearby Robin Hood's Bay.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46This is a wild coastline.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Get into trouble here and you're a long way from help,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53which is why Helimed 99 is heading to the seaside today.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I'd rather you pick that green sloping ground, if you would...

0:10:56 > 0:11:00- Yeah, I think we will.- ..rather than this grey stuff.- Yeah, sure.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04OK, slowing everything down.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Escape to the left, then, away from the rocks.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Emmanuelle Giora is an artist who lives in Paris.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16She was spending a few days in England with a friend

0:11:16 > 0:11:18when she slipped and fell.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Now she's two miles from the nearest road - and in need of help.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- Hi, Emmanuelle.- Hi.- How we doing? - I'm OK.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29- How's that leg?- I broke it. - Sore?- Yeah.- OK.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32What we're going to do is just get some nice, strong medication on board

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- and then we'll work out how we're going to get you out of here. - All right.- OK?

0:11:36 > 0:11:39We were just, er, walking down, going to Robin Hood's and...

0:11:39 > 0:11:43And she slipped on the mud, so she slipped and twisted her ankle.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Emmanuelle's ankle is badly broken.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49Local paramedics have hiked along the cliffs to reach her,

0:11:49 > 0:11:54but they decided the only safe way to get her to hospital is by air.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58- How far do you think it is to walk there? It looks a lot closer than it probably is.- About 200 metres?

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- 200 metres.- It looks a lot easier to your chopper.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03A lot easier, a lot straighter, to your chopper.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Once we got over the fence...

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Emmanuelle's fracture is not life-threatening -

0:12:10 > 0:12:14but this is the kind of place where even a trivial injury is serious.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18This is an exposed footpath, and little used in January.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Luckily, other walkers came to the rescue.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24I sent my wife to... To continue with this lady.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I went to the foghorn station

0:12:27 > 0:12:32to inform the emergency services from that point.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Which were a good response time, as well. I'm impressed.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39No-one is charged for a flight in Helimed 99,

0:12:39 > 0:12:41but Emmanuelle has a problem.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43She has no travel insurance,

0:12:43 > 0:12:48nor has she an EU health card that would give her free treatment on the NHS.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51If she needs surgery, she may have to pay.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54OK, pre-take off...

0:12:54 > 0:12:57For pilot Steve Waudby, this is a tricky take off.

0:12:57 > 0:13:03Updraughts from the 400-foot-high cliffs will buffet Helimed 99.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06We'll just slowly trickle forward into winds.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10- I don't fancy doing a backward take off over the cliffs.- No!

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Just some more wires and then t'next field.- Er, yep.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18But 25 years flying helicopters -

0:13:18 > 0:13:20including a spell in the RAF -

0:13:20 > 0:13:22mean Emmanuelle's unaware of the risks.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26The flight to Scarborough Hospital

0:13:26 > 0:13:31takes Emmanuelle over the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay - the end of her cliff-top walk.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35She'll have to save this destination for her next visit.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Nice and steady, lads.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39That's it - beautiful. Feet round this way, I think.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43She'll soon be undergoing X-rays on her ankle.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Fractures like this can be minor or require surgery.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50Sadly, Emmanuelle needs an operation.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52She feared she would.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56As soon as my, er, feet touched the ground,

0:13:56 > 0:14:00it twisted, like this, and I heard two big cracks.

0:14:00 > 0:14:05So I, er... I understood that it was very bad, so...

0:14:05 > 0:14:10My friend screamed, just behind me, and said, "Oh, my God. Oh, my God!"

0:14:10 > 0:14:13And then I saw my feet - you know - it was like...

0:14:13 > 0:14:19only attached with the flesh and the bones

0:14:19 > 0:14:21because I couldn't put the foot on the ground.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26Europe has done little to remove the barriers between doctors.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Scarborough surgeons decide Emmanuelle needs metal rods

0:14:30 > 0:14:33inserted into her broken bones.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37The trouble is, the nuts and bolts the NHS uses to secure them

0:14:37 > 0:14:41are a different size from their French counterparts.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44So Emmanuelle must go home for her operation.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47I have discussed with the surgeon

0:14:47 > 0:14:53and he told me that it was better if I was doing the surgery in France.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57It was better to be there than here.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59After three days in an English hospital,

0:14:59 > 0:15:03it's time for Emmanuelle to begin the long journey home -

0:15:03 > 0:15:08500 miles via the Channel Tunnel with her ankle still broken.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18As Emmanuelle makes her way back to France, doctors in Scarborough

0:15:18 > 0:15:23send her X-rays to the medics in her local hospital in Paris.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25It was an uncomfortable journey home.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28It took all night, actually.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31We drove from Scarborough to Dover,

0:15:31 > 0:15:33then we took the ferry

0:15:33 > 0:15:38and then we drove from Calais to Paris.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Lying on an ambulance trolley for such a long time isn't ideal,

0:15:41 > 0:15:44but the paramedic travelling with her

0:15:44 > 0:15:46made her as comfortable as possible.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49It was OK because I was lying on the bed

0:15:49 > 0:15:55and my leg was well fixed in plaster.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58During the operation, metal pins were inserted into her ankle

0:15:58 > 0:16:01to hold the broken bones together.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Three weeks later, near Montmartre in the north of Paris,

0:16:04 > 0:16:08Emmanuelle is back at her favourite cafe.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12It's not so difficult to walk with the crutches, but, actually,

0:16:12 > 0:16:16as I can't move and I have to have my leg laid down most of the time,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18I didn't go out a lot.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Maybe it's the fourth or fifth time out of the apartment.

0:16:23 > 0:16:28Merci. Merci beaucoup. C'est gentil.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32I read a lot, listened to the radio, watched movies,

0:16:32 > 0:16:34and...

0:16:34 > 0:16:40I started to play the mouth organ, actually.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44Although her holiday took an unexpected and painful turn...

0:16:44 > 0:16:48- I broke it.- ..Emmanuelle hasn't been put off returning to England.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51'We both heard that Yorkshire was a nice place,'

0:16:51 > 0:16:53and that's why we went there.

0:16:53 > 0:16:59But, for sure, I'd like to go back there to finish the trip, you know.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01And she says she won't forget the help

0:17:01 > 0:17:04that she got from her rescuers that day.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Of course, the helicopters,

0:17:06 > 0:17:09I would really, really like to thank them again.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13Because they took me really, really quickly to the hospital

0:17:13 > 0:17:18and I'm really, really grateful for all the care I had in England.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34Now let's return to the battle to save the life of Wyn,

0:17:34 > 0:17:36the victim of a heart attack who was cared for

0:17:36 > 0:17:40by a remarkable bunch of amateur life-savers in North Yorkshire.

0:17:40 > 0:17:45Come on, my darling, you can do this. I know you can do this.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Come on, Wyn.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Wyn Jones isn't breathing and has no pulse.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53CPR and high-voltage electric shocks

0:17:53 > 0:17:55are now the only ways to restart his heart.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Can you just move that hand for us, darling? Just move back a moment.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Yes.- Let us test his rhythm.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Four shocks had little effect.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06But after the fifth, things are starting to change.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10- It feels like he's got a pulse. - He's got a radial.- Do you want to see if we get blood pressure?

0:18:10 > 0:18:14And while he's on the floor, we'll just do a... We've got a radial.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Wyn now has a weak pulse and shallow breathing.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26What he needs now is urgent treatment in a specialist hospital.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29What we're going to do now - we've got an output,

0:18:29 > 0:18:31we'll put him on to the stretcher,

0:18:31 > 0:18:33we'll put him straight in the aircraft,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36- and we've got the scope to lift him straight into the machine.- OK.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38'He seems to be breathing on his own now.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40'They were going for 15 minutes,'

0:18:40 > 0:18:43so, yeah, hopefully, the outcome will be good.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Fingers crossed.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- He's breathing.- Come on, darling.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- Come on, Wyn, good lad.- Come on, darling, going to keep you warm.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52- Keep fighting, son. - I'm here, sweetheart. I'm here.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55Wyn's wife Jenny has been by his side

0:18:55 > 0:18:58through all the resuscitation attempts...

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Can you just guide this side?

0:19:01 > 0:19:04..and she's not leaving him now.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Come on, darling, I'm running with you.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09ME running! Can you believe it?

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Just take us time. Ready, steady, lift.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26Normally, everyone stays fully strapped in these helicopters.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28But not today.

0:19:28 > 0:19:3042 resps he's got.

0:19:32 > 0:19:37A bit of movement but I'm happy with that CO2 there. It's showing 15.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39I had it about 16-ish.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43Paramedics Daz and Paul are so concerned about Wyn,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46they're continuing to monitor every aspect of his condition.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50- Did he have a bit of movement, then? - Yeah, he did. He's posturing, mate.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53He is, isn't he?

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- You keep batting away, old lad. - Well done, pal.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58You're doing really, really well.

0:20:00 > 0:20:01This is where they're heading.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05The Leeds General Infirmary is one of the country's top hospitals

0:20:05 > 0:20:07for heart-attack patients.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13It's all right, pal, you're all right.

0:20:13 > 0:20:14You're doing really, really well.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20WYN GROANS

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Wyn's now just minutes from being in intensive care.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28His groaning is a sign he's starting to recover.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32You got it? You all right?

0:20:35 > 0:20:39We've got a male of unknown age found by a passer-by.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42Moaning and groaning when they got there initially.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Sounds like he's then gone into cardiac arrest,

0:20:44 > 0:20:46- bystanders started CPR.- Right.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48First ambulance on scene arrived there,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50said he stayed in VF three times.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54Since that last adrenaline went in at 10.07,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56at ten past he got a pulse back.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Everyone ready? Ready, steady...

0:21:00 > 0:21:03I think he's possibly had a heart attack, and that's the reason for the fall.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06There was nothing to suggest that a traumatic incident occurred.

0:21:06 > 0:21:07We think he's had a heart attack

0:21:07 > 0:21:10that's caused him to have the collapse off the bike

0:21:10 > 0:21:11as the passer-by found him.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15Initially, he was moving about and then he's gone into cardiac arrest.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19They started CPR and obviously called 999.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21He's had an MI, he's come off his bike.

0:21:21 > 0:21:26Whether anything has hit him... Yeah, it sounds more like this.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28'He's obviously called the cardiologist'

0:21:28 > 0:21:32to speak about the heart attack and they'll obviously do some bloods

0:21:32 > 0:21:35and further tests and take it from there.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39It's clear Wyn is now in the best place if he is to recover.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43The combination of CPR from the passers-by,

0:21:43 > 0:21:46advanced life support from the paramedics

0:21:46 > 0:21:51and expert care here means he's got the best chance of survival.

0:21:51 > 0:21:56Wyn, open your eyes for me, Wyn. Open your eyes.

0:21:56 > 0:21:57You're in hospital.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00But with the statistics so stacked against him,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03the next few hours will be critical.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16Scenery like this brings millions of people out into the hills -

0:22:16 > 0:22:18but if you're hurt out here,

0:22:18 > 0:22:21the landscape itself can threaten your survival.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27The motorcyclist who was wearing this helmet

0:22:27 > 0:22:29is fighting for his life.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34But biker David O'Connor did have some luck on his side today.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37His accident was witnessed by several people

0:22:37 > 0:22:39with the medical skills to keep him alive

0:22:39 > 0:22:42until the helimed team arrived.

0:22:42 > 0:22:47Two nurses, a firefighter and myself just drove past in the instant it all happened.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I don't know what the odds are of that.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52He was unconscious, his helmet had been smashed by the impact.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56We were just holding his head still and keeping his C-spine immobilised

0:22:56 > 0:22:58and just made sure his breathing had bilateral air entry

0:22:58 > 0:23:02and his lungs weren't too smashed up and trying to make sure his airway was OK.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05David has multiple injuries after he was thrown

0:23:05 > 0:23:10from his motorcycle on the A628 and hit a road sign.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Now he's losing consciousness as powerful drugs paralyse him.

0:23:13 > 0:23:17Then a tube will be carefully inserted into his windpipe

0:23:17 > 0:23:20and his rescuers will take over breathing for him.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Yeah, that's it.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26David's injured brain is swelling.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Eventually the build-up of pressure inside his skull would have killed him.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33I'm just using this traction splint

0:23:33 > 0:23:35to draw up some more morphine for him in flight,

0:23:35 > 0:23:39just to keep him a bit more sedated.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42But it's not a very clean area.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46Now he's unconscious, his blood pressure will drop

0:23:46 > 0:23:48and his confused brain can rest.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50'He's got serious injuries.'

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Looking at the speed he's probably been going at

0:23:53 > 0:23:55and the damage he's done to the sign,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58he's probably done some serious mischief somewhere.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02Until we get him through the scanner, it's going to be difficult to exactly say...

0:24:02 > 0:24:06- Is it touch and go?- Yeah. Potentially, he might not survive this, definitely.

0:24:06 > 0:24:11As well as his head wound, David has serious facial injuries,

0:24:11 > 0:24:14a shattered pelvis and a fractured femur.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17His case will demand all the skills of doctors and surgeons

0:24:17 > 0:24:20at Leeds General Infirmary.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24You're the nearest neurosurgical centre that we can fly to,

0:24:24 > 0:24:26so you're going to be the quickest.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29He's just over the border in Derbyshire.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39We're just leaving from Woodhead Pass. I'll be routing back towards the LGI.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43DISPATCH RADIO RESPONDS

0:24:50 > 0:24:54Pressure's down. His pressure's coming down.

0:25:01 > 0:25:02There are signs for optimism

0:25:02 > 0:25:07but they're dashed soon after Helimed 99's arrival in Leeds.

0:25:08 > 0:25:12MRI scans reveal the extent of his major head injury.

0:25:13 > 0:25:14For several weeks,

0:25:14 > 0:25:18he lies unconscious in an artificially induced coma.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21When he wakes up, the mental scars are obvious.

0:25:21 > 0:25:25He was in a very confused state when he first arrived on the ward.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28He also had problems with his speech

0:25:28 > 0:25:32so he was struggling to express himself clearly

0:25:32 > 0:25:34and make his needs known.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37That, in turn, led to a few difficulties with his behaviour.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Sometimes he would become quite agitated as a result of that.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Three months on,

0:25:43 > 0:25:47David's been transferred to a hospital nearer his home.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49But his injuries mean it's been a traumatic time

0:25:49 > 0:25:52for his wife Edith, too.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55When he first came round, her husband didn't even recognise her.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58'He didn't know where the heck he was

0:25:58 > 0:26:01'and trying to keep him from pulling tubes out from everywhere, you know.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04'He was all over the place, really.'

0:26:04 > 0:26:06He didn't know what was happening to him

0:26:06 > 0:26:09cos the last thing he remembers is going out for a ride on his bike.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11We've had a struggle sometimes, haven't we,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14trying to understand what you're saying?

0:26:14 > 0:26:17- But, yeah, it's coming back now, isn't it?- My writing's better now.

0:26:17 > 0:26:18Oh, it's a lot better.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22'He has been in post-traumatic amnesia for quite some time.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24'I would say it's only the last two to three weeks

0:26:24 > 0:26:27'that he's come out of that, and as he's come out of that,'

0:26:27 > 0:26:30he's suddenly become aware of everything around him,

0:26:30 > 0:26:33wanting to do this, wanting to do that, coming home.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37Because before that, it was all...

0:26:40 > 0:26:44..talking and not making sense of what was around him.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48David went on to recover enough to return home,

0:26:48 > 0:26:51but he will live with the effects of the head injury

0:26:51 > 0:26:54this collision caused for the rest of his life.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57And he's unlikely ever again to enjoy a ride on his bike

0:26:57 > 0:26:59in the Peak District.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09If you think handling a car is difficult enough on our roads,

0:27:09 > 0:27:11try being a trucker.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14You're in charge of a vehicle that weighs as much as a house

0:27:14 > 0:27:18and it travels at up to 56 miles an hour.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22Almost everything we buy and everything we own

0:27:22 > 0:27:25has ended up in the back of one of these.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28Haulage is the lifeblood of the country -

0:27:28 > 0:27:33lorries travelling hundreds of miles a day to keep the goods flowing.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Many of these trucks are now coming from abroad.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40Every year, there are one and a half million trips to the UK

0:27:40 > 0:27:42by foreign-registered lorries.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45But today, one of them has had a serious accident,

0:27:45 > 0:27:47overturning at a busy intersection.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52OK, mate, this is it in front of us.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56The road is on the far side of the village, mate.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00With the lorry coming to rest on the side of the roundabout,

0:28:00 > 0:28:03there's just one obvious landing site for pilot Chris Attrill.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07- That roundabout looks ever so good to me, mate.- It does, doesn't it?

0:28:07 > 0:28:10- Yeah.- We've still got traffic moving, that's the problem.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13Just at the rear of this, you've just got two concrete posts,

0:28:13 > 0:28:15like the ones that are at your two o'clock.

0:28:15 > 0:28:19- Yeah.- Clear of them now. Tail's clear of them on my side, mate.

0:28:19 > 0:28:20- So are the blades.- No worries.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23All right. We're in the middle.

0:28:27 > 0:28:29We've got a gentleman, unknown age, unknown name.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32- We're having difficulties with the lungs at the moment.- OK.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Obviously, as you can see, he's overturned his truck on the roundabout.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37Going approximately 30 miles an hour at most.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39The position we're in, he was squat down,

0:28:39 > 0:28:42- we've not managed to get a collar on him.- So the language barrier as well?

0:28:42 > 0:28:45Yes, there is a translator about somewhere.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51- OK.- Can you just ask for his full recollection of what happened?

0:28:51 > 0:28:53Can he remember everything that happened?

0:28:53 > 0:28:56HE SPEAKS POLISH

0:29:00 > 0:29:02OK.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04Has he any pain anywhere now?

0:29:04 > 0:29:07HE SPEAKS POLISH

0:29:09 > 0:29:13- He's only feeling pain on the left hand.- Left hand?- Arm and hand.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Basically, we've made the HGV safe.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19We've got rid of the glass, allowed the paramedics inside

0:29:19 > 0:29:23to treat the pain and we've been led by the paramedics

0:29:23 > 0:29:27and just extricated using the extrication board.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31Pilots have lots of criteria when looking for

0:29:31 > 0:29:34a safe place to land and, odd as this one might look,

0:29:34 > 0:29:38this roundabout actually ticked all the right boxes.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42It's nice and big and right next door

0:29:42 > 0:29:44to where the incident actually was.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46So, yeah, you've got everything there on hand

0:29:46 > 0:29:49and it's plenty big enough and the police kindly stopped all the traffic

0:29:49 > 0:29:52for us, so, yeah, it's a nice little spot to land.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54They can see that this large heavy goods vehicle's

0:29:54 > 0:29:57laid on its side here, a bit like a dead dinosaur.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00Erm, the patient's been extricated from the vehicle

0:30:00 > 0:30:02prior to our arrival and sustained some arm injury.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06They're just assessing the level of that at the moment.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09The likelihood is that once we've got a set of stable observations,

0:30:09 > 0:30:12he'll be transported to Pinderfields by ground vehicle

0:30:12 > 0:30:14and our colleagues will look after him en route.

0:30:16 > 0:30:21So it appears this Polish driver has escaped with just an arm injury.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26But now police attention is turning to what could have caused

0:30:26 > 0:30:29this huge lorry to topple over.

0:30:29 > 0:30:33A recent report showed that nearly half of all foreign-registered vehicles

0:30:33 > 0:30:36stopped by inspectors here had dangerous defects,

0:30:36 > 0:30:39so this lorry will be getting a full examination.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42One imagines it's probably been at a fairly low speed,

0:30:42 > 0:30:44though it's difficult to gauge exactly,

0:30:44 > 0:30:48but it's a large lorry and it's been going round this roundabout.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51So we're always happy to come out and have a look

0:30:51 > 0:30:53and help out if we can, but in this case,

0:30:53 > 0:30:57it doesn't require any further intervention at the moment.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00Despite air brakes, up to 12 heavy-duty tyres

0:31:00 > 0:31:04and steering rear axles, hazards that motorists take in their stride

0:31:04 > 0:31:10often catch out truckers - and steep hills are among the most deadly.

0:31:12 > 0:31:17'Good morning, Helimed 99 on for multiplied central standing for up link.'

0:31:17 > 0:31:20'Helimed 99, good morning and your stance approved.'

0:31:21 > 0:31:25It's market day in the small town of Otley, only a few miles

0:31:25 > 0:31:28from the airport, but today, this quiet corner of Yorkshire

0:31:28 > 0:31:32has been disturbed by a dramatic accident.

0:31:32 > 0:31:33Louise thought the house was falling down.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36She heard the bang as she came down to put the kettle on

0:31:36 > 0:31:39and heard this almighty bang. She thought the house was falling down

0:31:39 > 0:31:41or the roof had come off or something.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46Never expecting...to see all this.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49A lorry carrying cement has overturned on a steep hill

0:31:49 > 0:31:53and less than five minutes after the first 999 call,

0:31:53 > 0:31:55the helimed team is arriving on the scene.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57He's done well not to go down there.

0:31:57 > 0:32:02Unable to stop, the driver has ploughed through concrete, wood and metal fencing,

0:32:02 > 0:32:05narrowly avoiding a steep drop into a back garden.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07Fortunately for the trucker,

0:32:07 > 0:32:09a nurse was passing on her way to work.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12I was first on the scene, but I didn't actually see the accident.

0:32:12 > 0:32:16I just arrived as the lorry had gone over

0:32:16 > 0:32:20so, luckily, I was able to assist this gentleman straightaway.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23He is conscious, but he's not looking too good.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26His breathing's not very good at the moment.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28Quite scary, yes.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31For local residents, today's accident has been a shock,

0:32:31 > 0:32:33but not necessarily a surprise.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36I'm absolutely amazed that this hasn't happened before

0:32:36 > 0:32:39because I've seen lorries come down here,

0:32:39 > 0:32:41erm, with the brakes smoking.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44Cos they're braking all the way down from the top.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47Now, whether his brakes have faded or, with it being a cement mixer,

0:32:47 > 0:32:51the load has shifted and he's not been able to handle it.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54The driver of the lorry is quickly loaded

0:32:54 > 0:32:55into the air ambulance.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58Within minutes, he will be in the accident and emergency department

0:32:58 > 0:33:00of the Leeds General Infirmary.

0:33:00 > 0:33:03Helimed 99, we have lifted. En route - LGI.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06Call's been placed. 99, over.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09He has sustained very serious injuries,

0:33:09 > 0:33:12but for local residents, it's been a lucky escape.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14Why it's flipped there, though, seems strange.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18Thankfully his course...

0:33:18 > 0:33:20The line here, if you look at the tyres,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22is again heading for my drive.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25A mother and grandmother are left surrounded by debris

0:33:25 > 0:33:29but, for them, the damage could have been infinitely worse.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32My first thought was, "Thank God they weren't out in the garden."

0:33:32 > 0:33:34Then when I got here and saw it all,

0:33:34 > 0:33:36it doesn't bear thinking about.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40Sadly, the driver of the truck later died in hospital.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44The accident has sparked a campaign in the town to stop heavy lorries

0:33:44 > 0:33:46using the road where the crash occurred.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50Truckers are highly trained and haulage companies heavily regulated,

0:33:50 > 0:33:54but an articulated lorry can carry a load of up to 30 tons

0:33:54 > 0:33:58and that can make unloading a risky business too.

0:34:00 > 0:34:04Helimed 98 is circling the former mill town of Eland where a worker's

0:34:04 > 0:34:09been seriously injured while unloading a truckload of glass.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12- I'm just looking for wires.- All I can see is glass at the moment.

0:34:12 > 0:34:14OK, clear to the right.

0:34:14 > 0:34:18The pressure's on pilot Tim Taylor to find a landing site

0:34:18 > 0:34:20in the tightly packed town centre.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24- All good on the left side.- Your tail is clear of the building behind us.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26You've got an RV beneath us.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28This is not an ideal helipad.

0:34:28 > 0:34:33The factory is surrounded by buildings, car parks and open roads.

0:34:33 > 0:34:38- All clear right. - Vehicle just behind you, Tim.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Vehicle close to the tail.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42- How close?- Ambulance responder.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44- We're clear of it just now.- OK.

0:34:44 > 0:34:46Tail's clear right.

0:34:46 > 0:34:51Helimed 98 is down in the factory yard

0:34:51 > 0:34:54with a little help from Tim's crew.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56Can you turn the radio off, please?

0:34:58 > 0:35:00Airwaves on.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05Aaron Joyce was working in the back of a container lorry

0:35:05 > 0:35:08when two boxes of glass fell on him. He's in severe pain.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11BP's 144/73.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14Seems OK. Airway's fine, breathing's fine,

0:35:14 > 0:35:17he's got chest moving bilaterally.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19His tummy's not sore and he's not landed on his pelvis.

0:35:19 > 0:35:23It seems mainly on this lower leg.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26I've just, basically, I've got him on some oxygen,

0:35:26 > 0:35:30done an ABC assessment, done his base obs and got an IV access in.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33His workmates are upset.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35He's been pulling this off the back of the container

0:35:35 > 0:35:38and it's, obviously, it's further in so where having to drag it

0:35:38 > 0:35:41I didn't know he'd gone behind the middle of it,

0:35:41 > 0:35:43I was trying to drag it and suddenly

0:35:43 > 0:35:46I saw another one on top all the way and went backwards,

0:35:46 > 0:35:48just toppled onto him.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51That's 750 kilos of weight and there was one on top

0:35:51 > 0:35:55so it was like a ton and a half that's gone down.

0:35:55 > 0:36:00Local paramedics have examined Aaron and they fear he may have

0:36:00 > 0:36:01a serious internal injury.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04Might be a case of getting that forklift truck up.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07Flying doctor Steve Rowe is a hospital anaesthetist.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10He can see Aaron's leg is badly broken.

0:36:10 > 0:36:15The accident shattered his femur, the biggest bone in the body.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17What we're going to do, Aaron, cos it's so sore,

0:36:17 > 0:36:21I'm going to do an injection in the top of the leg that's going to turn your leg numb.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24Dr Steve knows that once they move Aaron,

0:36:24 > 0:36:27their patient's pain will be unbearable.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29He's going to give him a nerve block -

0:36:29 > 0:36:31a cocktail of drugs to block the signals

0:36:31 > 0:36:34being sent from his broken leg to his brain.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36Therefore cancelling all the pain

0:36:36 > 0:36:39and the patient will be very comfortable

0:36:39 > 0:36:42so we can manipulate the leg and put a traction splint on.

0:36:42 > 0:36:46I'm going to give you some more strong painkiller here, OK.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49He is also giving ketamine, a powerful anaesthetic

0:36:49 > 0:36:52that will not only help reduce his pain,

0:36:52 > 0:36:55but also ensure he remembers little of his ordeal.

0:36:57 > 0:37:01OK, that's 50 of ketamine at 10.07.

0:37:01 > 0:37:05Traumatic injury as a result of a heavy cardboard box,

0:37:05 > 0:37:07estimated weight, a ton.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10In urban areas like this, paramedics

0:37:10 > 0:37:13often have to decide how best to get their patients to hospital.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16Got him out just now and we'll run him into Huddersfield.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19It's only two miles down the road, so rather than take him by air,

0:37:19 > 0:37:21it's much quicker to take him to Huddersfield.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Aaron was driven to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

0:37:24 > 0:37:27where his broken leg was set by surgeons.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30Happily, he was allowed home a few days later.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34The dangers of working with lorries there,

0:37:34 > 0:37:38but what about Wyn, the cyclist struck down by a sudden heart attack

0:37:38 > 0:37:42near his home in Ripon? Let's catch up on his case.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Here at the Leeds General Infirmary,

0:37:46 > 0:37:50doctors are fighting to save the life of Wyn Jones.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54Less than an hour ago,

0:37:54 > 0:37:56he was here lying on the side of the road,

0:37:56 > 0:37:59having suffered a massive heart attack.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03- That's it. You can fight.- Come on, Wyn!- You can fight, my love.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06The quick thinking of those who came across him

0:38:06 > 0:38:09certainly gave him the best chance of survival.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11And it's clear some of their knowledge

0:38:11 > 0:38:14had come from this 30 seconds of TV.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16Push hard and fast to Stayin' Alive.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19Hands only CPR...

0:38:19 > 0:38:21it's not as hard as it looks.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23I was just impressed with the helicopter.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26Within, what, less than 10 minutes after we got there?

0:38:26 > 0:38:29That's what you said, wasn't it? And where it landed.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32It's now three weeks since Wyn collapsed and here at the airport,

0:38:32 > 0:38:36it's a chance for all those who helped to meet again.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39It's good that the ambulance service were just down the road.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41From professional medics to army sergeants

0:38:41 > 0:38:44and others just happy to help out,

0:38:44 > 0:38:46this is an ordinary bunch of people who took on

0:38:46 > 0:38:49an extraordinarily job.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52We just came across him when we were driving down the road.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55Spotted Wyn in the middle of the road so we pulled over.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58Then, literally, the three of us just went down on one knee,

0:38:58 > 0:39:00just went straight into trying to conduct CPR.

0:39:00 > 0:39:04We were on the scene so quickly and we saw those guys

0:39:04 > 0:39:07doing absolutely fantastic CPR.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10They were remarkable. They were quite amazing.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14When I saw him the first time, he wasn't a very healthy colour.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16Also, I remember looking at his face and that stuck with me

0:39:16 > 0:39:18and that stuck with both me and my husband

0:39:18 > 0:39:21for at least a couple of days afterwards.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23And just felt for his wife.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26But all these people aren't just here to see each other -

0:39:26 > 0:39:30there's someone else they've not seen since that day on the roadside.

0:39:32 > 0:39:37These ladies and gentlemen are the team that made your chest ache.

0:39:37 > 0:39:41So you were the lads that were there that morning?

0:39:41 > 0:39:43Wonderful.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46They tell me that it was just a chance that you were there.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49'We've all been shocked when Wyn came out of the hangar.'

0:39:49 > 0:39:53To see how well he looked, erm, is just phenomenal.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55in such a short space of time. You know, like you said,

0:39:55 > 0:39:59it's been three weeks and he looks almost as if nothing ever happened.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02it's a great feeling to see Wyn back here with us today.

0:40:02 > 0:40:07It proves that, again, that a massive team effort can sometimes

0:40:07 > 0:40:11change the day in your favour and we couldn't have wished for better

0:40:11 > 0:40:13than we had on that day.

0:40:13 > 0:40:18The bystanders walking by, the good citizens who got involved

0:40:18 > 0:40:20and tried to sort of change things.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24Then we had the British Army involved - they did fantastic work.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27The ambulance crew from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service

0:40:27 > 0:40:30were fantastic and did work that is second to none.

0:40:30 > 0:40:34And then we turned up and gave a little bit of a hand

0:40:34 > 0:40:35and got him into the LGI.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37It couldn't have happened any better for us.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40It's been very emotional, really, you know, meeting people

0:40:40 > 0:40:44and things like that and getting to where I am now,

0:40:44 > 0:40:46three weeks on, like.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48I'm very grateful to everybody, really.

0:40:48 > 0:40:50That's all I can say, really.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53It's wonderful to be here.

0:40:53 > 0:40:57But one of the main memories from that day was how Wyn's wife Jenny

0:40:57 > 0:41:00handled such an unthinkable situation.

0:41:00 > 0:41:02Come on, sweetheart. Come on, darling.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04Come on, darling, you're fine.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06She was marvellous.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10She was calm and controlled and she spoke to him.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14She was so positive throughout and, you know, you could just see that,

0:41:14 > 0:41:16after all those years, she loved him so much.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18Come on, darling. Come on, darling.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20Come on, darling. Come on, darling, you're fine.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22'My job, I saw,'

0:41:22 > 0:41:25was to talk to Wyn. To talk to him about things that we shared,

0:41:25 > 0:41:28we knew, so if he could hear, he could connect with it.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30Come on, my darling, I love you.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33'It didn't mean I wasn't upset, otherwise all you could think to yourself,'

0:41:33 > 0:41:36"My husband's dying in front of me," and you collapse

0:41:36 > 0:41:38and I don't think you can afford to do that.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40You've got too many other things to do.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44And, while all these people clearly had the will to save Wyn,

0:41:44 > 0:41:47there was also that bit of knowledge from a now-famous

0:41:47 > 0:41:49advertising campaign.

0:41:49 > 0:41:53I've seen the adverts about three times on television now

0:41:53 > 0:41:56and I think it's very important just to have an idea of what to do

0:41:56 > 0:42:00if you come along and find somebody in that position.

0:42:00 > 0:42:01# Stayin' alive, stayin' alive... #

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Push down five or six centimetres...

0:42:04 > 0:42:07My boys think it's absolutely hilarious. They watch it and think it's funny.

0:42:07 > 0:42:11Even they know, all you do is pump the heart to Stayin' Alive

0:42:11 > 0:42:14I did wonder at the time if it was something from that

0:42:14 > 0:42:17that had picked up...subconsciously picked it up from seeing it on TV.

0:42:17 > 0:42:20'Everyone did a little bit that helped and I think,

0:42:20 > 0:42:23'if people just stop and help and everybody works together

0:42:23 > 0:42:27'it can have an amazing outcome at the end of the day.'

0:42:27 > 0:42:29He seems, you know, massively grateful.

0:42:29 > 0:42:33That's a good thing. We would all want him to move on.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36We would all want him to get on with his life. He's got a second chance

0:42:36 > 0:42:38and, you know, not everybody gets that.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42And you'll be delighted to hear that Wyn and his wife

0:42:42 > 0:42:47are planning on jetting off on that delayed holiday to Australia.
