0:00:03 > 0:00:07When the people of rural Yorkshire dial 999,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09help can be a long time coming.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12The Yorkshire Dales are as beautiful as they are big.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16But if you're seriously injured in a landscape as gigantic as this,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19your life is on the line.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23But in the remotest parts of Britain's biggest county,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26they look to the skies for help.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Look on your left. Can we get in that grass field on your left?

0:00:29 > 0:00:34From high drama in the peaks to high waters in the Dales,

0:00:34 > 0:00:38the Helimed team's at the heart of almost every rescue,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41bringing 21st century medicine

0:00:41 > 0:00:44to some of Britain's most isolated communities,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47and saving lives against the odds.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57Today on Helicopter Heroes -

0:00:57 > 0:01:02a bus crashes in a busy shopping street, and the driver is trapped.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04He's got a bar going through the front of his knee,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06right out the back of his thigh.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10High in the Dales, a woman crawls for help after a painful accident.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13She actually crawled here and then...

0:01:13 > 0:01:15knocked on the door with her stick.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19An ice cream van's at the centre of a major rescue operation.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22We're just going to get it put in the splint and see

0:01:22 > 0:01:24if we can stop the bleeding as well.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27And a DIY project ends in agony.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31This piece of grinding material could have taken his eye out.

0:01:38 > 0:01:39Out here in the Yorkshire Dales,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42neighbours can be thin on the ground.

0:01:42 > 0:01:47There are fewer than 20 people per square mile in the national park.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50No wonder this is regarded as a local life-saver.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53But sometimes the Helimed team finds itself

0:01:53 > 0:01:56needed in the heart of the city.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02It's Christmas and on a main road into Bradford city centre,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05there's been a major accident.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08Passengers on this bus were thrown from their seats

0:02:08 > 0:02:11when it was in collision with several parked cars.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16But the most serious casualty is the driver, now trapped in his cab.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Helimed 99 is on final approach to a car park

0:02:19 > 0:02:22in the densely packed terraces below.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Paramedic Leon Baranowski is joining a major rescue operation.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31He's got a bar going through the front of his knee,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33right out the back of his thigh.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37He's trapped, obviously. We've taken a section out of the vehicle.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39The driver is Lukasz Mokos,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43one of many Polish workers driving buses in Bradford.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46The accident was witnessed by hundreds of people

0:02:46 > 0:02:49in a busy shopping street.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51I was just in t'shop.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Just heard a load of noises, some piping had come down.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Next thing I come out, bus were careening down here.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59It just hit all t'cars, really.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02And I just saw people getting thrown forward.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Looks like the bus driver's slid into one of the safety railings

0:03:05 > 0:03:07at the side of the road and the impact's caused the railings

0:03:07 > 0:03:11to penetrate through the front of the bus, up into his right leg,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15and all the way and back through his buttock area, near his pelvis.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18You got a lot of major arteries and veins in that area and a lot of

0:03:18 > 0:03:21nerves and long bones, so it's hard to see exactly what damage he's done.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Plan at the moment is to get him comfortable with some drugs,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27then the fire crew are going to cut him out and we'll get him

0:03:27 > 0:03:29packaged in, hopefully fly him in to LGI.

0:03:29 > 0:03:34Penetrating injuries like this must be treated very carefully.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Removing the rail isn't an option.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Firefighters are going to have to cut it short.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43He's in a lot of pain, so we're just giving ketamine for that.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Then we'll assess him once he's extricated.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51There could so easily have been many more casualties. Lukasz's bus

0:03:51 > 0:03:55was packed with shoppers on their way to the Boxing Day sales

0:03:55 > 0:03:57and the road was busy.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01I was sat in t'car waiting for the wife to get a statement from t'bank

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and just noticed in t'rearview mirror the bus coming towards us.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I was parked in front of the first car that got hit.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11And just shoved me another 20 feet into another car.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15SAW WHIRS

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Leon is reassuring his patient.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Despite having a Polish name and ancestry,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24he can't speak a word of the language.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Luckily, Lukasz is fluent in English.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31We're just going to move you now, nice and slowly.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:04:34 > 0:04:36We're going to move you now, nice and slow, all right?

0:04:36 > 0:04:38I think we should go now - he's laughing.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Now the firefighters' cutters have done their work,

0:04:41 > 0:04:43it's time to move Lukasz.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:04:46 > 0:04:49You keep your hand there for me, fella. That's it.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53The team's given Lukasz a new drug called TXA.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54It encourages clotting

0:04:54 > 0:04:57and is preventing its patient bleeding internally.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00That can be fatal in cases like this.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Yeah, C-spine's fine, guys.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Just relax for me.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Ready, steady, roll.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Because of the severity of his injury,

0:05:16 > 0:05:19the team's going to bypass Bradford Royal Infirmary

0:05:19 > 0:05:24and fly Lukasz direct to the regional trauma centre in Leeds.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26We've got to get him up to the aircraft now

0:05:26 > 0:05:30and the way that they've cut the bar, we've got him laying on his side.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33So, we won't have any problems getting him in the aircraft.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34It should clear the door.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38It should be a two, three minute flight from here, centre of Bradford.

0:05:38 > 0:05:39Steady, lift.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47Nice and still. Relax your head down.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49We're going to fly you to hospital, it's going to get a bit loud.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53- How's that pain, are you comfortable? - Pain.- Have you got any pain?

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- Yeah.- Where is it?- Leg.- In your leg?

0:05:57 > 0:06:01- OK.- Right leg.- OK, all right.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03At Leeds General Infirmary,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07a team of vascular surgeons specialising in the repair of

0:06:07 > 0:06:12blood vessels and an orthopaedic consultant are on stand-by

0:06:12 > 0:06:14to examine Lukasz.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19Even on Boxing Day, specialists are on call.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20HE GROANS

0:06:20 > 0:06:21- Clear?- Yeah, head's clear.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Keep going, keep going. Clear.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28Perfect.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33So far, he's been very lucky.

0:06:33 > 0:06:38But removing the rail could be difficult and risky.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Hello. When we get you in, we're going to tell the doctors

0:06:42 > 0:06:44and nurses what's happened.

0:06:44 > 0:06:50Lukasz is remarkably calm and curious about his unusual injury.

0:06:50 > 0:06:51Don't touch it.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Just need to make it nice and clean, all right?

0:06:57 > 0:07:00This is Luke. He's a 27-year-old male.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04About 12:20, bus driver involved in an RTC.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06He's gone and impacted central railing reservation,

0:07:06 > 0:07:10penetrating his right leg through his tib and fib...

0:07:10 > 0:07:13It's time for the Helimed team to stand back

0:07:13 > 0:07:15and let the doctors do their work.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18It's been a challenging job for Leon.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21He'll get assessed by the doctors, probably taken up to surgery

0:07:21 > 0:07:23to have it removed under a better environment.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27Antibiotics will probably start as well. And go from there.

0:07:27 > 0:07:32He's only 27, so it doesn't at the moment look like the injuries

0:07:32 > 0:07:34could have been as bad as what they are.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36It looks like his arteries and his veins will still be intact.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40He's not haemorrhaged as bad as what we thought he may have done.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44He's stable for now, so I'm quite happy. Good job.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47That night, surgeons operate to remove the rail.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51It's caused major damage inside Lukasz's leg, but it's repairable

0:07:51 > 0:07:56and with luck he should be able to walk - and drive - again.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07The market town of Holmfirth clings to the steep slopes of the Pennines.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10It's one of West Yorkshire's quaintest places.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Last Of The Summer Wine was filmed here.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16And the old picture house is now a thriving concert hall

0:08:16 > 0:08:20attracting veteran bands that were once big names.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24But today it's at the centre of a medical emergency.

0:08:26 > 0:08:32We're going over towards Holmfirth, a chap that's fallen off a balcony.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36Information that we've got so far is that he's unconscious.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39We've got a crew en route.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I would imagine they'll be on-scene first.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44But it's right in the centre of Holmfirth,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47so it could be a problem for us getting close to the casualty.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49It might be that we land nearby

0:08:49 > 0:08:52and have to walk some distance to get there.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55- It's right near the town centre. - Yeah.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Bowling green on the bottom there.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Yeah, I think this is where we've landed before, this cricket pitch.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Holmfirth's hills mean that pilot Andy Hall's going to have

0:09:04 > 0:09:07his work cut out getting the team anywhere near the patient.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10That's probably the best access. There is a gate over there

0:09:10 > 0:09:12but I've got a feeling you've got to climb over it.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15I'll park over here then.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Compound fractures to arms.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Head injuries.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22And he's unconscious...

0:09:26 > 0:09:29That's received, thanks for that.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33He was up there putting the banners on the balcony and slipped over.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36How and why, I don't know.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Are you all right if I go and have a look at

0:09:38 > 0:09:40trying to get the helicopter a bit nearer?

0:09:40 > 0:09:44Speed is vital. Their patient needs the advanced life support

0:09:44 > 0:09:46only a hospital can provide.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48This road will have to be shut, at the main road.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51And we need to have everybody cleared out of the way.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Paramedic Al Day, who lives locally, thinks he can get

0:09:55 > 0:09:59the chopper into the town centre just outside the Post Office.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01This chap's quite poorly. We could do with getting him

0:10:01 > 0:10:04in the helicopter as quickly as possible and on to Leeds.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Helicopter's parked a good half kilometre away.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11We're going to attempt to land it into this little space here.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14It's a little bit tight, though, so we'll have to see how it goes.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16We may or may not be able to get in.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22I need to push everybody back to the other side of the bridge.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28The pressure is on ex-army pilot Andy.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32He's heading for a tiny landing site

0:10:32 > 0:10:36littered with buildings, lamp posts and parked cars.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49The chopper's rotor blades are meters from stone walls.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52This is the last place Andy would choose to land.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55But a man's life could be at stake.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03This landing will demand all his skill.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10And he's down.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22Their patient is now just 15 minutes from Leeds General Infirmary,

0:11:22 > 0:11:23and its trauma team.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28Al was a very big help, clearly with his orange suit on.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30He's qualified to marshal the aircraft.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33He can see the hazards beneath and behind the aircraft.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35As you can see, we're quite close to that railing

0:11:35 > 0:11:38but that's the least of my problems. It's the blades.

0:11:38 > 0:11:46But the diameter away from all the buildings is satisfied. And it works.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50Paramedic Darrell knows the odds are stacked against his patient.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53The hospital helipad can't come soon enough for him.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56There's the church...

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Happy with that.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Clear of the church.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03- All clear.- Good job.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07But this rescue has a happy ending.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Despite a very serious head injury, the patient survives

0:12:11 > 0:12:16and after a few weeks in hospital is allowed home to recover.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23When you live somewhere like this,

0:12:23 > 0:12:26there are two things at the heart of the community.

0:12:26 > 0:12:31One is the Post Office. The other is the pub.

0:12:31 > 0:12:36And the more remote the community, the more important the inn.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40But today in Muker, high in remote Swaledale,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43the local landlord has had a surprising visitor -

0:12:43 > 0:12:48an elderly woman on her hands and knees, with a badly broken leg.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52She must have slipped and crawled round the snicket,

0:12:52 > 0:12:56and just crawled to the door and just banged with her stick, really.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58At first I just opened the door, I didn't really see anybody.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00And only when I looked down

0:13:00 > 0:13:03I realised she were in trouble, you know?

0:13:04 > 0:13:07From the description, it sounds like an open fracture,

0:13:07 > 0:13:12so it sounds like the bone that's broken has come through the skin.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Which obviously is a little bit more of a worry than just

0:13:15 > 0:13:17a straightforward closed fracture.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21There should be a road that follows this valley round.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24We don't know if she's inside the Farmer's Arms

0:13:24 > 0:13:26or whether she's outside.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Hopefully she's not having too many medicinal brandies.

0:13:32 > 0:13:38- I've got the pub. White pick-up truck. Farmer's Arms.- Yep, got it.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- How about this field here? - Yeah, down on the right.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Muker's built into the steep side of the Dale.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52The team's patient was posting a letter

0:13:52 > 0:13:55when she fell on this slippery path. It's no wonder.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00With her broken leg, Marina Parker managed

0:14:00 > 0:14:04to crawl down to the door of the pub to raise the alarm.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Now, then. What have you been doing?

0:14:07 > 0:14:09Playing stunts?

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- How are you feeling?- Just cold. - Cold?

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- I'm a bit cold.- Does it hurt?

0:14:15 > 0:14:17- It's beginning to hurt.- OK.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20It's bleeding as well.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Sounds like it's an open fracture, lower leg.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26I was going to move her inside the pub but as you're here I think

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- we'll splint it and put her inside your vehicle.- Yeah, OK.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32And then we can decide whether we want to fly her or not

0:14:32 > 0:14:35- once we get her dry and happy. - Yeah.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40The fall's left her with a badly broken and bleeding leg.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Just going to take your show off. Tell me if this hurts a lot.

0:14:43 > 0:14:48It's a painful end to a simple trip to the postbox.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52I wasn't with her. She was walking by herself.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56And she just slipped because it's very, very slippery.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58She actually crawled here, apparently,

0:14:58 > 0:15:02and then knocked on the door with her stick.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Big suck.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06That's it. Breathe out. Relax.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08Nice, long deep breaths.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10The weather's getting worse.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15And so is her pain.

0:15:15 > 0:15:20Al wants a doctor's permission to use the team's strongest painkiller.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23I was just wondering if we could give her a bit of ketamine

0:15:23 > 0:15:26to get her splinted and move her?

0:15:26 > 0:15:30She's got quite a nasty open fracture of her lower leg there.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32You can see the bone sticking out through the skin.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35That's going to be painful when we try and move her.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39So we're going to give her a little bit of ketamine just to try

0:15:39 > 0:15:45and dissociate her a bit before we start moving her around.

0:15:45 > 0:15:50We're in a bit of a rush cos it's chucking it down, she's cold.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52So we want to get this done as quickly as possible.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57I'm going to give you this medicine now.

0:15:57 > 0:16:03You listening? OK. Now, it might make you feel a bit strange.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Like you're not attached to your body any more.

0:16:06 > 0:16:07SHE LAUGHS

0:16:07 > 0:16:12Just be ready for that. Don't worry, if you feel a bit odd, that's normal.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16All drugs affect people differently

0:16:16 > 0:16:20and the injection has a dramatic effect on Marina.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- Marina?- Marina?

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Marina?

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Marina's stopped responding.

0:16:37 > 0:16:42If that doesn't change soon, her breathing could stop as well.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Marina? Deep breaths for me.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Marina? Deep breaths for me. Eh?

0:16:50 > 0:16:53- Is it all a bit strange?- Yeah.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Do you remember I gave you some medicine? Do you remember?

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Yeah, cos you hurt your leg, didn't you?

0:16:59 > 0:17:03- Yeah.- Yeah, that's right. OK, you just relax for me.

0:17:03 > 0:17:08This is one of those villages where everyone knows everyone else.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12You're OK. Everything's OK. They're just bandaging you all up.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Marina certainly wasn't short of help.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18We're a close-knit community and everyone knows everybody,

0:17:18 > 0:17:21so it's nice that everyone rallies round and brings cushions

0:17:21 > 0:17:24and another local got a hot water bottle to keep her warm.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Everyone gets the brollies out and the blankets.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29But all this only happened because she had the foresight

0:17:29 > 0:17:31to crawl to the pub.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35It's probably a good 100 yards from top to bottom

0:17:35 > 0:17:40and then to have crawled here in the rain...that's just amazing.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42All credit to her.

0:17:43 > 0:17:48She's great. She was born here so she's used to it all.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51All right, chicken? Just slow that breathing down for me.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Hello.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Hello. Give me a smile.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00- There we are, lovely.- Well done.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03It's horrible weather and it's muddy and slippy

0:18:03 > 0:18:06so we're just going to drive her up to where the aircraft is.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Hopefully there's some access there.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Ready, steady, lift.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13A long drive to hospital from here

0:18:13 > 0:18:17so we're going to fly to James Cook, which is probably 15 minutes for us.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19Should be nice and safe and sound up there.

0:18:21 > 0:18:2579-year-old female with an open fracture, tib, fib.

0:18:25 > 0:18:26Otherwise stable.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31She's had 30mg of ketamine.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35The effects of that ketamine are now starting to wear off.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39What can I say?

0:18:39 > 0:18:40I love you to bits!

0:18:44 > 0:18:47- We're going to start the engines up in a minute.- Are you?

0:18:47 > 0:18:51So I'm going to put these ear defenders on your head.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- Cos it's very loud.- Is it?

0:18:54 > 0:18:56I'll leave the heating on for a moment.

0:18:56 > 0:18:57And lifting.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Lifted, 0-4.

0:19:02 > 0:19:0415 minutes to James Cook.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11Now the wet weather that caused Marina to fall in the first place

0:19:11 > 0:19:15is leading to problems for her flight to hospital.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Veer round to the right. And we'll come back around to the left.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21That's looking decidedly grotty in front.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25We're just making our way through some

0:19:25 > 0:19:28difficult weather towards James Cook.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Stick with the low ground for the moment, rather than go over.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39- I don't think this was in the forecast.- No, I don't think it was.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Pilot Chris must stay low,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48hugging the bottom of the Dales until he reaches lower ground.

0:19:50 > 0:19:56After a long diversion, Helimed 99 finally reaches the trauma centre

0:19:56 > 0:19:59in Middlesbrough, where Marina's leg can be examined.

0:19:59 > 0:20:0298 landed at James Cook.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04How's your leg feel?

0:20:04 > 0:20:06- I can't feel it.- Good. Good.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13X-rays reveal that Marina's ankle is broken so badly,

0:20:13 > 0:20:17surgeons must use titanium rods to mend it. And several days later,

0:20:17 > 0:20:21she's still detained in hospital under observation.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24She knows she could had lain undiscovered for some time

0:20:24 > 0:20:28if she hadn't decided to seek help on her knees.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32I just went down this lane and there's nowhere to hold anything.

0:20:32 > 0:20:38And before I knew it I'd skidded and my ankle was broken right away,

0:20:38 > 0:20:40it was horrible.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44There's so many people who helped and brought umbrellas

0:20:44 > 0:20:46and then it was cold and there were blankets.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49And then I wasn't conscious, really,

0:20:49 > 0:20:52until I was actually in the aeroplane.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Marina says she can't wait to get back home to Swaledale,

0:20:56 > 0:20:59but her ankle is likely to mean someone else will have to

0:20:59 > 0:21:02walk to the postbox for the next few months at least.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13In the picturesque towns and villages of North Yorkshire,

0:21:13 > 0:21:16keeping up appearances is not just a way of life -

0:21:16 > 0:21:20it's a legal obligation. Many of these homes are listed

0:21:20 > 0:21:24and using the right materials for any building work is compulsory.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28It can be expensive, which is why DIY accidents are a major source

0:21:28 > 0:21:31of patients for the Helimed team.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36The teams often scramble to someone

0:21:36 > 0:21:40who's neglected to do what it does every flight.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42My door is secure.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44All the right equipment...

0:21:44 > 0:21:46- Security.- My harness is good.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50..working properly and double checked.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53With no-one else getting in the way.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54Glider just come over your head.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59- Somewhere... There he is.- Got it.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03But sometimes the chopper's called to an accident

0:22:03 > 0:22:06that's happened despite the victim taking all the right precautions.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12Someone's injured themselves with an angle grinder

0:22:12 > 0:22:16and the ambulance has got quite a distance to travel, so we've been

0:22:16 > 0:22:19dispatched as an immediate response

0:22:19 > 0:22:23so we could assess the patient.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25I believe it is a residential address and the patient is a male.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Other than that, I've got no information at this time.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35- We're looking at this area... - Yeah, in a garden.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40A bird's eye view can help in finding a patient,

0:22:40 > 0:22:43but you can't read the street numbers.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46BOTH TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:22:46 > 0:22:50- It's somewhere between there and there.- The main road?- Yeah.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56Paramedics Leon and Al know angle grinders can cause

0:22:56 > 0:23:02very serious injuries. The cutting disc slices through almost anything.

0:23:02 > 0:23:03Hello.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07Mark Brogdon was cutting bricks when the accident happened.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10It's in his face?

0:23:10 > 0:23:12He was wearing protective goggles.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16If he hadn't, he may already be dead.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20- It's flicked up and hit you? - I think the disc broke.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Yeah, you've got about an inch.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Inch laceration. That hurt then?

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Mark is embarrassed but Leon would rather be safe than sorry.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34We've come because the road ambulance was going to take quite a distance

0:23:34 > 0:23:37to get to you and we're only based over at RAF Topcliffe.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40- Right.- So it's only been a couple of minutes, all right?

0:23:40 > 0:23:43I only just saw an explosion, really,

0:23:43 > 0:23:46a flash of sparks or something. I presume the disc broke.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50I had my safety glasses and my own glasses on.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54At the moment, everything looks absolutely fine.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57- You have got quite a nasty cut to your nose.- Yeah.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00But it doesn't look too deep. And it doesn't look like it's intruding

0:24:00 > 0:24:03anywhere in your nasal passage.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07- I can still breathe through it. - Which is a really good sign.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10The air ambulance isn't needed.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Instead, he'll be taken by road to Harrogate,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15where his wounds will be treated.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18He's just got a laceration across his nose,

0:24:18 > 0:24:21it's not gone through to the actual septum, the gristly bit of your nose.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Lucky he's been wearing safety goggles as well. The minor

0:24:24 > 0:24:27lacerations he had across his forehead and the bridge of his nose

0:24:27 > 0:24:29were caused by the safety goggles doing their job.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32Potentially, this piece of grinding material's flicked up

0:24:32 > 0:24:35and come across, it could have taken his eye out.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37That piece could have gone anywhere.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40The fact that he was wearing his safety goggles, he's been quite lucky

0:24:40 > 0:24:44and also the cut's not as deep as what it could have been,

0:24:44 > 0:24:47so a trip down to Harrogate A&E, assessment,

0:24:47 > 0:24:51and then potentially down to LGI if he needed further surgery.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55In Harrogate, doctors stitch up Mark's wound.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58It heals well and he's soon back at work on his home.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05Anyone walking with the aid of one of these will tell you

0:25:05 > 0:25:09an accident can have a devastating effect on your life.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12All it takes is a few seconds of inattention.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20When the school bell goes, thousands of children pour out

0:25:20 > 0:25:23of the classroom to make the journey home.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26Getting on a bus is statistically the safest way.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30But for those who walk home, that brief chance to play with your mates

0:25:30 > 0:25:33is when an accident is most likely to happen.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36There was a group of boys at the other side of the road

0:25:36 > 0:25:41and one of them just run across road in front of the ice cream man.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48- Aircraft, ten o'clock, high, helicopter.- OK, mate.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Paramedics Darren Axe and Dave Appleby

0:25:52 > 0:25:53have sons of their own.

0:25:53 > 0:25:58They know that they are on their way to every parents' nightmare.

0:25:58 > 0:25:59Youngster knocked over.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Looks like compound fracture.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07That young man on the scooter

0:26:07 > 0:26:11overtook the...

0:26:11 > 0:26:14ice cream van and he just hit him.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18I see it now.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20- On this road here.- Yeah.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23That field looks good.

0:26:30 > 0:26:3312-year-old Rowan Farnsworth's injuries

0:26:33 > 0:26:36are worse than the initial report suggested.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39This lad has got an open tib and fib

0:26:39 > 0:26:42so we're just going to get it straightened,

0:26:42 > 0:26:46get it put in the splint and see if we can stop the bleeding as well.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Hiya. Can you just tell me what happened?

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Paramedic Dave needs more information.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Was it a glancing blow or has he hit him at the front?

0:26:56 > 0:26:59I think he's hit him at the front and knocked him

0:26:59 > 0:27:00into the ice cream van.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04Rowan?

0:27:04 > 0:27:06I know this is not very nice,

0:27:06 > 0:27:10all us crowded round you like this, all right?

0:27:10 > 0:27:14Before they can treat Rowan, Dave knows he must give him

0:27:14 > 0:27:18pain relief - morphine and no needles.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21What I want to do is just squirt some of this in your mouth

0:27:21 > 0:27:24and I want you to swallow it for me.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27All right? It's quite a strong painkiller.

0:27:27 > 0:27:28All right?

0:27:28 > 0:27:33It might not work straightaway, all right, but it will help you.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35All right?

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Right, so just let go of my hand, all right?

0:27:37 > 0:27:40Can you open your mouth for me?

0:27:41 > 0:27:45It doesn't taste very nice but it can make a big difference.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Suck on that and drink it.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51- All right?- Is that it?

0:27:51 > 0:27:52Is that all you want?

0:27:52 > 0:27:55I'll not give you any more for now, all right?

0:27:58 > 0:28:03Rowan's understandably frightened, but the morphine has taken effect.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07I'm being as gentle as I can, darling.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12The patient's mum has arrived to comfort her son

0:28:12 > 0:28:14and it could be just what the doctor ordered.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Right, he's in a bit of a funny position here,

0:28:21 > 0:28:25so when we're ready we'll pull him away from there and roll him

0:28:25 > 0:28:28and straighten the leg, if we can, all in one go, all right?

0:28:28 > 0:28:31- Do you want him on gas?- Yeah.

0:28:31 > 0:28:32As soon as you're happy...

0:28:34 > 0:28:40Paramedic Dave and the team can now straighten his badly broken leg.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42We're going to lift his leg a bit.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47Take really deep breaths on that. That's it, suck in.

0:28:47 > 0:28:51It's painful but it will help stem the bleeding,

0:28:51 > 0:28:53reduce the risk of infection,

0:28:53 > 0:28:57and hopefully help Rowan get better quicker.

0:28:57 > 0:29:01There's a general hospital in nearby Barnsley but paramedic Dave wants

0:29:01 > 0:29:05to take Rowan to the specialist Children's Hospital in Sheffield.

0:29:05 > 0:29:09He has got some kind of small swelling to the front of his head

0:29:09 > 0:29:14and he's also got an open tib and fib on his right leg,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16which is still seeping blood a little bit.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20His baselines all seem normal at the moment.

0:29:22 > 0:29:26I think we'll go in on the far side, feet first.

0:29:29 > 0:29:30All right, steady.

0:29:30 > 0:29:35Cos it's an open fracture, concerns are pain relief and infection,

0:29:35 > 0:29:40because it's exposed. So, we needed to keep it clean as best we could

0:29:40 > 0:29:43and reduce it to ensure there's still

0:29:43 > 0:29:46good peripheral circulation into his foot.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49He's still got some sensation and we're pleased,

0:29:49 > 0:29:52once we moved it and put him into a good position,

0:29:52 > 0:29:56he could wiggle his toes and he got good cap refill in his toes,

0:29:56 > 0:30:00which meant there was good blood circulation down into his toes.

0:30:00 > 0:30:01So, pleased with that.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03- Hello.- Hiya.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07You all right, darling?

0:30:07 > 0:30:11Rowan is much calmer now he's on the way to hospital.

0:30:11 > 0:30:16And Mum coming too is reassuring the young patient.

0:30:16 > 0:30:2099, our ETA is three minutes into Children's.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23The Children's Hospital is in Sheffield city centre.

0:30:23 > 0:30:28There's no helicopter landing pad but there is a handy park opposite.

0:30:28 > 0:30:30The band stand.

0:30:30 > 0:30:31Watch that pointy bit.

0:30:33 > 0:30:37Rowan's just relieved that Mum is still with him.

0:30:37 > 0:30:42- Stay with me.- I will stay with you, darling.- Promise.- She will.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45- Don't drop me.- We'll not. - We only drop people on Mondays.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48We get fined if you drop. It comes out the wages.

0:30:48 > 0:30:49I'm still here, don't forget.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51They'll have me to answer to, won't they?

0:30:51 > 0:30:54The Helimed team has done what it can.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57Rowan is in the right place, given his age and injuries.

0:30:57 > 0:31:01- Thank you, bye-bye.- We're going to leave you with these people.

0:31:01 > 0:31:05Good care of you, all right? Rowan, sorry I can't come with you, mate,

0:31:05 > 0:31:08but they're going to leave me if I don't get back.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10- All right? Take care.- Thank you!

0:31:15 > 0:31:20Orthopaedic surgeons specialising in young and still growing bones

0:31:20 > 0:31:23began surgery on Rowan's leg that evening.

0:31:26 > 0:31:30Ten days later, with Dad's physio clinic in full swing,

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Rowan's on the mend.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34It's nice being home.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38I sat down on the sofa and Mum put on the recliner for me.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42I got wrapped up in a blanket and I watched telly for a bit.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46That's where my stitches are, underneath that dressing.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49And these two are holding my bone in place.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53It looks gruesome so you'll not want to see that.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58It's going to be on for about 15 weeks

0:31:58 > 0:32:02and I'm looking forward to being completely fixed.

0:32:02 > 0:32:06So that I can run around and jump about like I used to.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09Once I get my momentum going, I might lighten.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17The Humber Estuary is Britain's back door.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21It carries 90 million tonnes of cargo every year.

0:32:21 > 0:32:26If you buy it or sell it, the chances are it sails these waters.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30And once it's been unloaded, it probably goes by train.

0:32:30 > 0:32:35It's a fact that makes this sleepy village an unlikely playground

0:32:35 > 0:32:37for the UK's train spotters.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41Barnetby is quite simply the best place

0:32:41 > 0:32:44to see freight trains in the country.

0:32:44 > 0:32:48But today, one rail enthusiast's hopes of spotting

0:32:48 > 0:32:53a six axle Class 66 diesel-electric has hit the buffers.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55We're going to an incident.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57It's come in to the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00I think he's fallen and possibly fractured the leg.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Helimed 99 is following the railway line to the patient.

0:33:05 > 0:33:1067-year-old Alan Morgan slipped while trying to get a better

0:33:10 > 0:33:13vantage point to photograph the passing locomotives.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17We've been asked to back a crew up who are on-scene.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19It seems like a bit of a location problem,

0:33:19 > 0:33:23quite a distance from the road side, so we may be of some use.

0:33:23 > 0:33:29At your seven o'clock now. Guy in a hi-vis jacket.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31Oh, yeah.

0:33:31 > 0:33:32Down there...

0:33:35 > 0:33:37- This is Alan.- Hi, Alan.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40You been out spotting trains, have you?

0:33:40 > 0:33:41- I have, yeah, yeah.- Right.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44- Dangerous business, you know.- It is.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48I was walking down here and slipped

0:33:48 > 0:33:51and fell and broke me leg.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53I heard it crack.

0:33:53 > 0:33:58And as soon as I looked down, I could see it was misshaped.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01So I knew what had happened to me.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04As luck would have it, there was another gentleman here.

0:34:05 > 0:34:09Who I didn't know. Cos it's quite isolated.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12And he was able to phone for help.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15They're going to have to move the helicopter

0:34:15 > 0:34:17from the top of the hill to the bottom.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20If we could relocate to down here, it's better than going uphill,

0:34:20 > 0:34:22- isn't it?- Yeah, going down will be easy.

0:34:22 > 0:34:28Easiest method of doing this is either put him on our board

0:34:28 > 0:34:33and put him... We'll get our stretcher and rather than lift him

0:34:33 > 0:34:36over anything, we can slide you underneath the fence.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38I don't have a better plan.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43We're going to take him about 10, 15 metres down this hill,

0:34:43 > 0:34:46slide him under the barbed wire and wooden fence,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49and Andy, the pilot, is going to bring the aircraft down

0:34:49 > 0:34:51to a flat part in this field.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54And we're going to load him on and take him to the ambulance,

0:34:54 > 0:34:56which is probably a mile away.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06It's basically just to facilitate us getting down to the ambulance.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10It's probably about a mile we've got to walk with our equipment.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12And it's just easier and safer for us to get him down that way.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16A retired chemistry teacher,

0:35:16 > 0:35:21Alan has had a lifelong love of railways, but he has never flown.

0:35:26 > 0:35:27Just take it nice and easy.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33Paramedic Andy admits to being rather keen on his train set

0:35:33 > 0:35:34when he was younger,

0:35:34 > 0:35:38and his boyhood shunting skills are coming in useful today.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41One more. Ready, steady, slide.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46- We're not far.- OK, one, two, three.

0:35:51 > 0:35:5499 just lifting to relocate patient.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59'99 from air desk, that's a roger, all received.'

0:36:08 > 0:36:11- Pylon to the left of the ambulance. - Yeah, there's wires to the left.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Because of his injuries, Alan is having to lie flat

0:36:14 > 0:36:17and can't make the most of what, for him, would be

0:36:17 > 0:36:20a bird's eye view of the 11:53 to Lincoln.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31- How was that, Alan? - That's fine.- All right.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34At first sight, train spotting doesn't appear to be

0:36:34 > 0:36:39a terribly risky pastime, but Alan's just proved it can be.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42It's something John knew all along.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45Just goes to show, doesn't it? Train spotting, golf courses,

0:36:45 > 0:36:47crown-green bowling,

0:36:47 > 0:36:49seems to be a dangerous thing.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51Perhaps not the best circumstances.

0:36:53 > 0:36:57The land crew take Alan to the nearest hospital in Scunthorpe.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Doctors there set his leg and ankle,

0:37:00 > 0:37:04and he's allowed home. He won't be out spotting trains any time soon,

0:37:04 > 0:37:07as his recovery is going to take a few weeks.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10But his curtailed day out wasn't wasted.

0:37:10 > 0:37:12Alan does have some good photos.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22The UK is home to nearly a million horses,

0:37:22 > 0:37:27and three and a half million of us get our kicks like this.

0:37:28 > 0:37:33From countless pony club hacks to 90,000 racing thoroughbreds,

0:37:33 > 0:37:39riding is an industry worth around £4 billion.

0:37:39 > 0:37:43One thing every rider has in common is the risk.

0:37:45 > 0:37:49One study claimed riding was 20 times more dangerous

0:37:49 > 0:37:54than motorcycling, and today paramedic Al and Helimed 99

0:37:54 > 0:37:59are heading back to the Pennines for yet another casualty.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03We're on our way to the picturesque village of Holmfirth,

0:38:03 > 0:38:07famous for the location of Last Of The Summer Wine,

0:38:07 > 0:38:10for somebody that's fallen off a horse and collided with a wall.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13Which sounds doubly painful.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17Think we're somewhere down here, this farm building, I think.

0:38:17 > 0:38:21- I've got a wind turbine thing. - Roger.

0:38:24 > 0:38:29Paramedics Al and Paul know this could be a very serious case.

0:38:29 > 0:38:34They're landing at a riding school on the outskirts of Holmfirth.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39- Hi, Tony, how you doing?- How are you? - Not so bad.- 21-year-old Jade.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42She's been on a new horse this afternoon,

0:38:42 > 0:38:47which appears to have bolted and did you say it hit into this wall?

0:38:47 > 0:38:50Into that wall and dragged her across it.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53Many experts will tell you that the bond between a horse

0:38:53 > 0:38:57and its owner is almost telepathic at times.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00They'll also tell you accidents like this are common

0:39:00 > 0:39:04when a new horse is ridden by an unfamiliar rider.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08She's been thrown into wall off t'horse. New horse.

0:39:08 > 0:39:12So...I don't know whether t'horse...

0:39:12 > 0:39:14I just know she's hit wall.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17Ready, steady, roll.

0:39:17 > 0:39:2021-year-old Jade's in severe pain

0:39:20 > 0:39:22and the team's worried this may be

0:39:22 > 0:39:25a symptom of serious internal injuries.

0:39:25 > 0:39:30Have we got three or four people who are good to give us a hand?

0:39:33 > 0:39:34Into this bag.

0:39:35 > 0:39:39She's been knocked out for a few seconds, witnessed by a friend,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42and she's complaining of severe lower back pain.

0:39:42 > 0:39:46So, we've treated as such. Because she's been knocked out,

0:39:46 > 0:39:48we've put on a collar and a board,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51and we have a special piece of equipment called a T-Pod that

0:39:51 > 0:39:55wraps up her hips to protect them in case she's broke her hip.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56There's no time to waste.

0:39:56 > 0:40:00Most air ambulances are not permitted to fly in the dark.

0:40:00 > 0:40:04Helimed 99 must fly Jade to hospital in nearby Huddersfield

0:40:04 > 0:40:07and return to base before night fall.

0:40:07 > 0:40:11Air desk from 99, lifting scene en route to Huddersfield.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14We've just worked out that we need to be leaving there at five past,

0:40:14 > 0:40:17so we need someone there as soon as poss. I know you'll try.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21'Yeah, roger. I'll make sure that they're well aware of that.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24'Get back to you if we get any issues. Thanks. Over.'

0:40:29 > 0:40:33- Hiya. You what? - You feeling butch?- Yeah.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39Even before the Helimed team reaches its nearby base,

0:40:39 > 0:40:42Jade's undergoing tests and X-rays.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Doctors diagnose a broken pelvis.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48Their patient's detained in hospital for three days

0:40:48 > 0:40:52before being allowed home. And more than a month later,

0:40:52 > 0:40:56she's still to ride her new horse for the second time.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03At Leeds General Infirmary,

0:41:03 > 0:41:08another of the Helimed team's patients is still recuperating.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12It's two weeks since Lukasz, the Polish bus driver,

0:41:12 > 0:41:15was trapped in his cab by a metal bar.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18He's had extensive surgery.

0:41:18 > 0:41:24When I arrived to hospital, they took me straightaway on an operation

0:41:24 > 0:41:28to remove that metal thing from me.

0:41:28 > 0:41:33And it was very high risk of infection cos that metal thing

0:41:33 > 0:41:38from outside stuck in my leg for a couple of hours before they took off.

0:41:38 > 0:41:42That was the worst part for me cos I was really worried about my leg.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45I was even thinking I can lose it

0:41:45 > 0:41:49and then they transplant some kind of soft tissues and muscles

0:41:49 > 0:41:54and other stuff from this side of my body to put down there

0:41:54 > 0:41:59and I was really, really worried about that as well.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01Like, how this will be worked all together,

0:42:01 > 0:42:03how this will be accepted by the leg.

0:42:03 > 0:42:07But now I know it's safe and they said they're happy.

0:42:07 > 0:42:12Lukasz's employers have now launched a staff appeal to raise

0:42:12 > 0:42:14money for the air ambulance charity.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17By the time he's back in the driver's seat,

0:42:17 > 0:42:21it's hoped they'll have repaid the cost of his flight.
