0:00:04 > 0:00:07Because of what I'm going through, I feel like I've had my life.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10To call it a day in your life at 46, that ain't right.

0:00:10 > 0:00:15'We're here to help a soldier fight the biggest battle of all...'

0:00:15 > 0:00:16You seem to have it in your head

0:00:16 > 0:00:19that if you can't be the man you were, you're not a good dad.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20It doesn't compute.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23'..to face the future stripped of the life that defined him.'

0:00:23 > 0:00:26You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured?

0:00:26 > 0:00:29You know that, don't you? He thinks he's a burden to us.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30I don't see him like that.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33He's my dad, it doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair or not.

0:00:33 > 0:00:38'We're rebuilding a home to give a family a chance for a new beginning.'

0:00:38 > 0:00:41My worst fear is that he's going to try going down the stairs

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and he's going to end up in the bottom of a pile.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47This is just... It's going to blow their mind.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49I am so, wow, pleased.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51'But it's not going to be easy.'

0:00:51 > 0:00:54There is a crack that wide down the brickwork trying to break

0:00:54 > 0:00:57away from the house, taking next door and everything else with it.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01With just nine days to do the job,

0:01:01 > 0:01:04we're going to need a small army to carry it off.

0:01:04 > 0:01:05And here they are!

0:01:05 > 0:01:09This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:09 > 0:01:11CHEERING

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Maidstone, Kent is home to the Morris family - Mo, Jan,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33and their three children, Charelle, Karissa and Jordan.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35As a paratrooper for the Royal Engineers,

0:01:35 > 0:01:39Mo devoted 20 years of his life to serving his country.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43From war-torn Bosnia to humanitarian missions in Kenya, Mo spent

0:01:43 > 0:01:48his whole career striving tirelessly to be the best of the best.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51That was just my mentality. I just wanted to push all the time.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Sit-ups, press-ups, pull-ups, whatever.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56I set the bar and then everyone was saying, "We've got to compete.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58"We've got to beat Mo, we've got to beat Mo."

0:01:58 > 0:02:00But I wouldn't let that happen.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01But after two decades,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04the gruelling demands of constant low-level parachute drops

0:02:04 > 0:02:07started to take their toll on Mo's body.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Catastrophic nerve and ligament damage to his knees

0:02:11 > 0:02:13left him in constant pain.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15I kept on going, and yeah,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18they eventually got me in for an op and basically all my ligaments,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21crucial ligaments and everything else had just gone.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23A few years down the line, they basically told me

0:02:23 > 0:02:26that I'm going to be going through a medical discharge.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30In one fell swoop, Mo not only lost his career, but the army

0:02:30 > 0:02:35accommodation the family had called home since the children were born.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40We had three children, no job, no income.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43My husband was lucky enough to get a pension from the army,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46but it would only just cover some of our bills.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49For four years, the family struggled on in cramped,

0:02:49 > 0:02:53temporary housing before scraping together every penny of Mo's

0:02:53 > 0:02:56army disability pay out for a deposit on a family home.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Mo attempted to find work, but after a string of operations,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03it was clear the damage to Mo's knees could not be repaired

0:03:03 > 0:03:07and that doctors had done everything they could.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09They've told me that I'm not going to get any better.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13I've basically got to live with this and take the medication.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Because of so many operations, I've got severe nerve damage.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19If I get any more operations,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21I then have to resort to sitting in a wheelchair.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Mo now lives his life in constant pain,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29confined to one room in a home totally

0:03:29 > 0:03:32unsuitable for his needs, where even climbing the stairs to the

0:03:32 > 0:03:36only loo is an excruciating ordeal.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37We help Dad quite a lot.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Get around the house and getting up and down the stairs.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45It's hard at times. Yeah.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49My mum was having a lot of down moments. She cries a lot.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52She comes home from work stressed.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54It's not good for her.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58But we get on with it, though.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01It's clear this house is not just dragging Mo down

0:04:01 > 0:04:03but the whole family, too.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06They've somehow slipped through the net of support that should be

0:04:06 > 0:04:08there for them from day one.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Seeing the predicament they were in, a friend of the family contacted us

0:04:11 > 0:04:15on their behalf and we felt it wasn't right for anyone,

0:04:15 > 0:04:19let alone a man who'd served his country, to live like this.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21That's why we're here to help.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25We did ask just for a downstairs toilet with the council,

0:04:25 > 0:04:27and that's taken a while.

0:04:27 > 0:04:32But we thought... Cos he started not drinking as much as you normally

0:04:32 > 0:04:35would, because he knew that he'd have to go up and down the stairs.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Can't do that all day, though. That's what he does.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41You don't drink anything all day because you can't go to the loo? Yeah.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43I'm not asking for the world.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45All we wanted was a downstairs toilet

0:04:45 > 0:04:50so that I could go to the toilet as and when without any hassle.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53I just wanted that bit of freedom for myself. Freedom and independence.

0:04:53 > 0:04:58And I didn't want my kids staying in the house just to try

0:04:58 > 0:05:01and help me get to the toilet.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04I just wanted them to go out and enjoy themselves, because...

0:05:04 > 0:05:07You do know they don't think any less of you because you're injured?

0:05:07 > 0:05:09You know that, don't you?

0:05:09 > 0:05:11What, my kids? Yeah.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Oh...

0:05:13 > 0:05:15They understand.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23We'll have a chat about this at a different time.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25I try and help him as much as I can,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28but there's some stuff that I'm not physically able to help him with.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Like, I went to a hospital with him

0:05:30 > 0:05:32when he had his operation and getting him back after that,

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I've never seen him in pain like it before.

0:05:35 > 0:05:36All right? MO: Yeah.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39JORDAN: The amount of times I've heard him struggle to get in the bath

0:05:39 > 0:05:42and there's been a little slip and my mum's just come

0:05:42 > 0:05:46running because I haven't been able to have the strength to hold him,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49we'd have to get two or three of us to help.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53I've learnt to get on with it and love him for who he is, really.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Having a downstairs loo may sound like a small thing,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00but for this family, it will be life-changing.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01But we're not stopping there.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06This whole house needs to work for Mo, no matter what the future holds.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10It's going to improve Mo's life

0:06:10 > 0:06:15and he's going to be able to move around freely and be mobile.

0:06:15 > 0:06:20It's giving him the sense of being able to do more for himself,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23so that he's got his pride and his dignity.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Mo's an incredibly proud man, which I know makes it

0:06:37 > 0:06:39hard for him to accept help.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41As a soldier, he's done enough for others around the world.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43I know it's difficult, but this time

0:06:43 > 0:06:46he's just got to let us do the same for him.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Make much of a difference, then, if we can actually sort this out?

0:06:49 > 0:06:51Have you seen the programme?

0:06:51 > 0:06:53ALL: Yeah. OK, so you know what goes on.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Are you excited about what the potential is? Very.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00'It's time to get Mo, Jan and the family off.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03'We've got just nine days, as usual, and the clock is already ticking.'

0:07:03 > 0:07:06All right, then? Thank you very much.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Take it easy. We'll see you soon.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11There you go, that's the family gone.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Time to the meet the builders.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17'And the Maidstone trades haven't let us down!

0:07:17 > 0:07:18'They've turned out in force.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21'There must be at least 60 blokes on site this morning.

0:07:21 > 0:07:22'Well, 59 blokes.'

0:07:22 > 0:07:26We've got our first lady electrician, this is Clare.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30That's Craig, that's Jordan, and that's... Harry. Harry.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33I heard there was cakes. Would you like one? Yes, there are cakes. Yes.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35He'd smelt them.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37If you eat it quick enough, you can pretend you didn't eat it.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Thank you very much.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Very nice.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43'Really, before you've even started?

0:07:43 > 0:07:46'With all these people on site, the pace of the build is already

0:07:46 > 0:07:49'cracking along, but some things aren't just about manpower.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52'Concrete can only set so fast, so, these foundations

0:07:52 > 0:07:55'for our planned extension had to be laid before we got here.'

0:07:55 > 0:07:57You had to hand dig a lot of it, didn't you,

0:07:57 > 0:07:59to avoid the services underneath?

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Yeah, we hand dug, initially just to avoid the drainage and bore down.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05We went down to five metres on these particular ones.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08In view of the fact that we're not paying you for this, why would you get involved?

0:08:08 > 0:08:12It's all about helping out those that haven't got the ability to do

0:08:12 > 0:08:13what's needed to be done.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17It's left to the likes of us and you to come and sort it out.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19What do you make of the site now that you see it?

0:08:19 > 0:08:23I think it's moving at an incredible pace, actually. I think it's fantastic.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26'Only an hour in and the place already looks like a bomb's hit it.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28'But there is a plan behind all this pandemonium

0:08:28 > 0:08:30'and that's down to our designer Gabrielle.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34'Her challenge is to redesign this house to work better for Mo.'

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Yeah, this is as small as we can possibly, possibly make it.

0:08:38 > 0:08:39We've squeezed... we've even done

0:08:39 > 0:08:41thinner stub walls to divide this space.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43'With his injuries getting progressively worse,

0:08:43 > 0:08:46'he could end up wheelchair-bound, so we're making the whole

0:08:46 > 0:08:50'downstairs wheelchair friendly, which is proving tricky.'

0:08:50 > 0:08:51Another tight one for you.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55Another one where your design skills to turn this into a TARDIS -

0:08:55 > 0:08:58get more inside than there's space to put, if you know I mean.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Just trying to get everything you need for Mo in this

0:09:00 > 0:09:02extension has been absolute hell.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05It's really been millimetre by millimetre to get this to work.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08It's been so frustrating for him, cos he just wants to contribute and do stuff.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10He's just been trapped in this one room,

0:09:10 > 0:09:14not being able to get stuck in and actually do things.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15So, I hope we can change all that.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Gabby is not leaving an inch of this house untouched to get it

0:09:19 > 0:09:22right for Mo and the family.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Downstairs, we're ripping out the kitchen

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and knocking through into the existing dining room to

0:09:26 > 0:09:29create a kitchen-diner the whole family can use together.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33To the rear, we're building a timber-framed extension to give Mo

0:09:33 > 0:09:36and Jan a downstairs bedroom and all-important

0:09:36 > 0:09:39en suite wet room, so Mo doesn't have to negotiate the stairs.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs, it frees up a bedroom upstairs,

0:09:43 > 0:09:45so the two girls can now have a room each

0:09:45 > 0:09:47for the first time in their lives!

0:09:47 > 0:09:51And Jordan's boxroom is getting some custom space-saving furniture.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Along with all this, we're putting in a brand-new family bathroom.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Last but not least, we're widening all the downstairs doorways

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and creating a new entrance and pathway

0:09:59 > 0:10:01to the side of the house, to allow for wheelchair access in case

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Mo needs to use his chair in the future.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09It's a gargantuan task and they only wanted a downstairs loo. Ha-ha!

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Right, better get on with it and get this house cleared.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17LAUGHTER

0:10:17 > 0:10:18Here you go.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20It's not heavy.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Something happened when I turned 50.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24You're having pains and aches and stuff, are you?

0:10:24 > 0:10:28You know when people pick something up from the floor, they go, "Eurrr..."

0:10:28 > 0:10:30They make a noise when you lean down.

0:10:30 > 0:10:31You do that, do you? I do that now.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33I've done that for 20 years.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Are you saying I'm fat?

0:10:36 > 0:10:37Eurrr...

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Yeah, that's basically what it is.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42'Marvellous. From one wide load to another -

0:10:42 > 0:10:44'the timber-framed extension's arrived

0:10:44 > 0:10:46'and it's as big-boned as our Devonian cousin.'

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Isn't it a little bit over engineered for a timber frame?

0:10:50 > 0:10:54It's well-engineered. It's well-engineered?

0:10:54 > 0:10:56It's well-engineered, is what we're saying.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58It's well-engineered. It's interesting.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01When engineers do the job, they want to make sure that nothing goes wrong.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03You could hang the Tyne Bridge off of this.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06But, to be perfectly honest, it's not just supporting the timber-frame

0:11:06 > 0:11:09extension, because we're removing all this back wall of the house.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12We're taking that middle spine out and putting the steel

0:11:12 > 0:11:15structure in, so all the pressure on the building is on this corner.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Oh, I see, yeah. And what's the brickwork like?

0:11:18 > 0:11:20The brickwork is absolutely rubbish.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22So the house is a bit crumbly.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24This is not just holding a single-storey extension,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27it's putting the strength back into the house again.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29This house is crumbling like a bag of old biscuits,

0:11:29 > 0:11:31but this massive amount of structural work is the only way

0:11:31 > 0:11:35we can get everything sorted for Mo's needs.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Jules has just been given the instructions to take the wall

0:11:39 > 0:11:40out below and put a steel in.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44What we're looking at is that that wall isn't supporting

0:11:44 > 0:11:47anything above the ceiling line and Jules has just correctly said

0:11:47 > 0:11:51it'd be quicker to take the whole wall down from the top to the

0:11:51 > 0:11:54floor and rebuild this in timber up here.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01'Go on, son!

0:12:01 > 0:12:03'We're pretty much taking out every internal wall in the whole

0:12:03 > 0:12:06'house, but the trouble is, when you start peeling back

0:12:06 > 0:12:10'the layers of a building, you never know what you're going to find.'

0:12:10 > 0:12:13We have some interesting news for you. What's that?

0:12:13 > 0:12:16The end of the building's trying to fall off. Which end of the building?

0:12:16 > 0:12:18This end of the building here.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20See if you can see the mistake.

0:12:20 > 0:12:21Oh.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24What do you notice that's missing?

0:12:24 > 0:12:27There's nothing holding that thing up. Yes, yes.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29"That thing" being the chimney.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31That, just looking at it from here,

0:12:31 > 0:12:35is the scariest thing I've seen all day, and that's saying something.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37This will comfortably put us back by a day.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39'This is a nightmare situation.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41'The entire weight of the upstairs chimney stack is

0:12:41 > 0:12:45'sitting on nothing more than these tired floorboards.'

0:12:45 > 0:12:48This bit here is part of a chimney that did used to

0:12:48 > 0:12:51go down through into the kitchen below and it does connect up with

0:12:51 > 0:12:54the house next door, then goes up through the roof

0:12:54 > 0:12:56and out into the open world.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58All the weight's just wanting to go that way on the house now.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Taking the chimney next door and everything else with it.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04The big difficulty is, there is a crack, a hole that wide,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07running all the way down the brickwork, parting company up there,

0:13:07 > 0:13:11which turns into this crack over here

0:13:11 > 0:13:14and goes all the way down here, through this wall here, and

0:13:14 > 0:13:17ends up downstairs in the kitchen below, below the stairs there.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21But that's one of the problems with houses of this period.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23All the mortar's died on them, they're all a bit tired,

0:13:23 > 0:13:25the bricks have started to crumble.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29When people make alterations, like, "Oh, we'll make the kitchen bigger,

0:13:29 > 0:13:31"so we'll take the fireplace out, take the chimney breast out

0:13:31 > 0:13:33"and just leave that one there..."

0:13:33 > 0:13:35You just can't rip a chimney breast out

0:13:35 > 0:13:38and leave it on floorboards.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41So, apart from there being a chimney trying to fall into the kitchen,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43the fact that the end of the building's trying to fall off,

0:13:43 > 0:13:46that we've got a crack all the way down to the first floor,

0:13:46 > 0:13:48and we can't get the padstone in, because the current one's

0:13:48 > 0:13:52in the way, so we'll have to take the staircase out, it's all going very well?

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Wonderfully well, yeah. Swimmingly.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56It's a good day, really.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59'What we need is an overview from Dappy from N-Dubz.'

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Looking at the size of this job, I think it's going

0:14:02 > 0:14:05to take a little bit longer than we usually do.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06I know we do get it done in the end,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09but I think this is going to take more than the nine days.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12'Yes, thanks very much. This is the last thing we want.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16'We're going to need some specialist help to get these cracks

0:14:16 > 0:14:19'fixed, and that's really worrying with such a tight time frame.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22'But everyone on site is doing what they can to solve the problem,

0:14:22 > 0:14:28'as it's our one chance to get the house sorted for the family.'

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Since he was medically discharged from the army ten years ago,

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Mo has faced not only the loss of the career he loved,

0:14:34 > 0:14:38but a life with limited mobility and constant pain.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42It's tough, and ten years on he's still struggling to come to

0:14:42 > 0:14:46terms with his injuries, both physically and psychologically.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50When you add everything together,

0:14:50 > 0:14:55how do you think the way you've been has affected the children and Jan?

0:14:55 > 0:15:00I think about it all the time. I try and hide my emotions.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02I try and keep all that away from them,

0:15:02 > 0:15:07because if I wake up with a smile they think, "Oh, Dad's OK."

0:15:07 > 0:15:08So they go out and do their thing.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Rather than say, "Look, kids, I'm in a bit of pain," and then, you know,

0:15:15 > 0:15:19it's then them thinking, "Well, I better stay home with Dad."

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Would that be a terrible thing?

0:15:22 > 0:15:23I suppose it wouldn't be,

0:15:23 > 0:15:27but I feel that I've now stopped them from doing what they want to do.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29They do worry about you.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32I know they worry, but I just don't want them to.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I don't want them to worry about me.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Can you imagine any situation where you'd stop worrying about them

0:15:38 > 0:15:40if they were struggling with something?

0:15:40 > 0:15:43I'd never stop worrying about them.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45So, why should they stop worrying about you?

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Because I feel that I've had my life,

0:15:48 > 0:15:52whereas they're still trying to live theirs. Had your life? You're 46!

0:15:52 > 0:15:56OK, OK, OK, I've still got time to go, it's just that at the moment

0:15:56 > 0:15:59because I feel, because of what I'm going through,

0:15:59 > 0:16:03I feel that I... I've basically come to a wall.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07To call it a day in your life, at 46, ain't right.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Ain't right for you, ain't right for them, is it?

0:16:10 > 0:16:11Oh, no, definitely. No.

0:16:11 > 0:16:14You've got to find a way to see this as a new beginning.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16You're toughest challenge -

0:16:16 > 0:16:19the way that you will show your kids that you can conquer anything -

0:16:19 > 0:16:22is get to get your head around this and conquer this.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24And find something positive to do yourself.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26So that you aren't saying that this is the end.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Yeah. Yeah, definitely. That's your toughest task ever. Yeah.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31That's very hard.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36I'm really starting to see the extent of the baggage

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Mo is carrying with him and it's sad to see.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42This build is about so much more than bricks and mortar.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45But I can't help thinking all this work will be in vain

0:16:45 > 0:16:48unless I can get Mo to see he has got a future

0:16:48 > 0:16:51and a family who love him no matter what.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53It's certainly been a first day full of stresses

0:16:53 > 0:16:56and the large cracks we found are still very much hanging over us -

0:16:56 > 0:16:58literally!

0:16:58 > 0:17:01But at least we can get these steel girders in position

0:17:01 > 0:17:03to give much-needed support to the back of the house,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06so the whole thing doesn't fall down on our heads!

0:17:06 > 0:17:08You're even paying for the steels?

0:17:08 > 0:17:10You paid for the steels? Yes.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12So you're working for us for nothing? Yeah.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15And you paid for the steels? Yes.

0:17:15 > 0:17:16Mate, I don't know what to say!

0:17:16 > 0:17:18Why would you do a thing like that?

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Just to help out. Yeah, that's a lot of money, though.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23What size are we going, then?

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Hang on, I am biggin' him up at the moment.

0:17:25 > 0:17:26Give the man a moment! LAUGHTER

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Give the man a moment in the sunshine.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31No time for sentiment around here, is there?

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. No, it's no problem at all.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37SHOUTS

0:17:39 > 0:17:40CHEERING

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Well, it's been a really interesting first day,

0:17:45 > 0:17:47because the house has really fought us.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50We got a lot done, but a lot of problems thrown up, too.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Two steps forward, one step back.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Mind you, seven o'clock at night,

0:17:54 > 0:17:56you can't fault the commitment, can you?

0:17:56 > 0:17:57Isn't it marvellous!

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Morning. This morning is all about trying to stay warm.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11It's...fff....freezing!

0:18:11 > 0:18:14And they say there might be snow on the way.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16It never ceases to amaze me the effort of the local trades

0:18:16 > 0:18:18up and down the country,

0:18:18 > 0:18:20and it's no different here in Maidstone -

0:18:20 > 0:18:22they're here in droves.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Oh, it's snowing! See, I told you.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26All pitching in to help and donating their time

0:18:26 > 0:18:29to do the best they can for Mo and the family.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31After ripping the guts out of the building yesterday,

0:18:31 > 0:18:34we've now got to start to try and put everything back together.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Look, you talk to these bricks - they've had enough.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40They've held this house up for over 100 years - they're tired.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43When we're 100, we'll want to be rested, won't we?

0:18:43 > 0:18:46I'm feeling a bit that way during this conversation, to be honest.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48I think there's life in the old dog yet.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50I'm talking about the house, not Billy.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Because of yesterday's cracks threatening to pull the house apart,

0:18:53 > 0:18:55we've had to call in specialist structural fixers.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Until they get here, we've got to be super careful,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00but there's still plenty to be getting on with outside.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02A team of gas fitter have been working overnight

0:19:02 > 0:19:04to put in a bigger pipe for the new boiler,

0:19:04 > 0:19:07which will keep the house warmer for Mo during the day,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10and crucially, with Jan the only earner, it will save them money.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13You'll need more volume of gas, hence we've put in a bigger pipe.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16These boys have been working all night?

0:19:16 > 0:19:19Yeah, these have been here since... Good-looking bunch, aren't they? Oh, yeah.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22These are the better-looking ones.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Did you have to hand-pick 'em from the... I did, yeah.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Modelling agency, yeah.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28They normally model the balaclavas.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30But, yeah, we've got 'em out.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32When you were leaving school,

0:19:32 > 0:19:34and you saw the careers officer,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37was it "I want to work with gas"?

0:19:37 > 0:19:39All my family have worked with gas.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Is that right? Gassy family. Yeah, a gassy family.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45It's in my blood. The gas is in my blood.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49Hope not, that's the bends, isn't it? If you get gas in your blood?

0:19:49 > 0:19:51You meet some lovely people along the way, don't you?

0:19:51 > 0:19:55With limited mobility, it's often difficult for Mo to leave the house unaided.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58So the garden becomes a vital part of his world during the summer.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03And we drafted in Rich and the team to transform every inch of it.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06The first thing is to level the area to make a flat pathway for Mo

0:20:06 > 0:20:08to get around the whole garden.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Mo and Jan love their gardening, so we're putting in raised beds

0:20:12 > 0:20:14so Mo can tend his plants and veg more easily.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17Along with this, we're putting in a special greenhouse

0:20:17 > 0:20:20with wide doorways to give Mo easy access,

0:20:20 > 0:20:23but it's tough work in these sub-zero temperatures.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25The cold not affect you?

0:20:25 > 0:20:27Do you not fancy maybe a job in an office?

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Nice collar and tie, sandwich at lunchtime?

0:20:30 > 0:20:32No, I don't do technology.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Photocopying your arse at the Christmas party?

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Yeah, we do that. Oh, do you? THEY LAUGH

0:20:38 > 0:20:40The single biggest problem with this build

0:20:40 > 0:20:43is that the end of the building is trying to fall off.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44It is really worrying,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47but luckily for us, at extremely short notice,

0:20:47 > 0:20:50a team of specialist fixers have turned up

0:20:50 > 0:20:52to try and stop the house falling down around our ears.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54So all this problem,

0:20:54 > 0:20:57with the crack going right up through the house and into the loft,

0:20:57 > 0:20:59this is how it's being solved? That's right, yeah.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01You're stitching the wall together. Yes, yeah.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05We'll be using a special grout, with a stainless steel bar,

0:21:05 > 0:21:07and that will hold the wall.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11We've gone from the base here, right the way through to the loft.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17So that little twisting stainless steel rod is strong enough to hold all that together.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Oh, yeah. Very strong indeed.

0:21:19 > 0:21:20That's absolutely brilliant.

0:21:20 > 0:21:21Saved the day.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24With luck, hopefully! THEY LAUGH

0:21:24 > 0:21:25Absolutely fantastic.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28'That wasn't an accident, that was a critical review.'

0:21:28 > 0:21:29Shut up and get on with it.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31That's the whole house well on the way

0:21:31 > 0:21:33to being stitched back together.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36It's brilliant news, and it means our timber-frame extension

0:21:36 > 0:21:39can now be erected and fixed onto the rear of the building.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43And this little house really needs the extra space.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47Have you seen Julian through the hole? Julian?

0:21:48 > 0:21:51Thank you very much. Appreciate your work. Thank you very much.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54These guys put all the chemical fixing in, held the end wall on,

0:21:54 > 0:21:57held the chimney on - done all that. In, out, in a day.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00We've got a building that will stay standing now. Very lovely of them.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Very lovely of them. Top blokes. Lovely lads.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06By the way, could I have a 99 with strawberry sauce? Strawberry sauce?

0:22:06 > 0:22:07Yeah.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13There you are, son. Beautiful, thanks very much. ?7.80.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I should've asked if he had a flake, or crushed nuts.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18With the build now back on track, we can start to fit

0:22:18 > 0:22:22one of the special features Gabriel is putting in for Mo -

0:22:22 > 0:22:23a wood-burning stove.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28So, Ben, my darling. You found us a log burner. I have, yes.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30For the dining room. I'm so excited.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Can I have a look at the drawing?

0:22:32 > 0:22:34What we were hoping is, with these raised legs,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37it will be more accessible for Mo if he needed to be in a wheelchair.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40That's right. So will that still work in the arch we've got?

0:22:40 > 0:22:42We will make it work.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44That's the attitude we're getting all over the site.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46Everyone has been touched by Mo's situation,

0:22:46 > 0:22:50and is going the extra mile for him and the family.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53It was family friend Alison who originally contacted the show.

0:22:53 > 0:22:58He's not a man that takes easily to having people help him, though, is he? No.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01I wrote that e-mail and it was sitting on my computer

0:23:01 > 0:23:02for about two weeks,

0:23:02 > 0:23:05and I was like, "No, I shouldn't be sending this."

0:23:05 > 0:23:07Because I know how proud they are.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09But now I've seen it, and now it's really happening,

0:23:09 > 0:23:12I'm so excited. Just so excited for them.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15What do you make of the fact you've got, like, 70 blokes on site,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18giving all their time free, and all these materials and everything?

0:23:18 > 0:23:21It's amazing! I can't believe how many people are here.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24I don't think they've got any idea how big the changes are they're making.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27All they wanted, really, was a downstairs toilet.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30So, this is just going to blow their mind.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34And the girls, and Jordan, it's going to be brilliant.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38Since Mo left the army ten years ago, both Charelle and Karissa

0:23:38 > 0:23:40have seen their dad's condition deteriorate.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43It's a hard situation for everyone

0:23:43 > 0:23:46but if the new house design can give Mo more independence,

0:23:46 > 0:23:49it will take so much pressure off the rest of the family -

0:23:49 > 0:23:52and that's down to Gabrielle to get it right.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57It is tough with him because he's got it in his head that he's OK.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00So he's trying to get around everywhere when he knows...

0:24:00 > 0:24:03his body knows he can't, but he thinks he can.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05So, yeah, to help him, his body, physically

0:24:05 > 0:24:09and mentally, to know that he can get around...

0:24:09 > 0:24:12So how does he get up and down the stairs at the moment?

0:24:12 > 0:24:17It did take all of us to get him upstairs once, didn't it? Yeah.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20And it hurt a lot. So we were... "Oh!"

0:24:20 > 0:24:24But you can't... It's hard, because we can't help more than we can.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27You feel like what you're doing for him isn't enough,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30that you can't take that pain away from him, so...

0:24:30 > 0:24:32You kind of have to just deal with that,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35and help as much as you can.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37But them stairs really do hurt him.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Last time we met we talked a little bit about your dad

0:24:40 > 0:24:44and using a wheelchair. And I know that that is a really...

0:24:46 > 0:24:49He doesn't want to use it. No. And why should he?

0:24:49 > 0:24:51We were talking about him being stuck in the hallway.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55Once he's in his wheelchair he can't move around the whole house, can he?

0:24:55 > 0:25:00And he just burst into tears. He thinks he's a burden to us. Yeah.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05It's really sad because I don't see him like that.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07He's my Dad. It doesn't matter if he's in a wheelchair.

0:25:07 > 0:25:12The fact that he came out with the fact that he thinks he's a burden was really upsetting,

0:25:12 > 0:25:14because I don't think he is.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16I don't want him to feel like that at all.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20I just think if we had more space for him so he wasn't trapped in one room,

0:25:20 > 0:25:24that would be a really big, positive change.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26And just warm everything up a bit.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31Just make that lay out work so he's not having to fight the house. Yeah. Yeah.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36It's clear listening to the girls how much they love their dad

0:25:36 > 0:25:39and how much they want to help him.

0:25:39 > 0:25:42But it's tough for a proud man to accept help,

0:25:42 > 0:25:44especially from your children.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Morning!

0:25:48 > 0:25:52The sun is out, the snow is gone and we are at the halfway stage.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Look at this timber-frame extension. It's up in just a few days. Amazing!

0:25:55 > 0:26:00It's the biggest size planning regs would allow, and we're trying to maximise every inch of living area.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03So instead of a traditional brick system,

0:26:03 > 0:26:06we're using a clever space-saving thing which simply slots together.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10The rear of the garden has now been levelled to allow better

0:26:10 > 0:26:12access for Mo and a new pathway created, which is handy,

0:26:12 > 0:26:16as what's going to sit up the end of said pathway is just arriving.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19Good morning. Good morning, gentlemen.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22What is so special about this greenhouse then?

0:26:22 > 0:26:25This greenhouse is modified for wheelchair access.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28It has got a lower threshold. Have you got one in your own house?

0:26:28 > 0:26:31I haven't got one. Have you not? No. You're joking!

0:26:31 > 0:26:33I've got a very small garden.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37Why did you want to contribute this to the job?

0:26:37 > 0:26:40In the past, I've had hard times and people have given me a leg up

0:26:40 > 0:26:43and that sort of thing. Let's help this family out.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46Let's give them a greenhouse. You're a gentleman and a scholar.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50Very nice.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Seems like we haven't got rid of all the cracks in this household.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58The extension is up, the roof is on it, amazingly.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01There's a stud wall going in. The floor is being prepared.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Plumbing and electrics in in this room.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06New window being built and a new door has already been punched through.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Up here, the bathroom is taking shape.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11We've built a bathroom and the plumbing is in.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13There is a bit of plastering prep going on.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16There is plastering going on here. It looks like a plaster floor.

0:27:16 > 0:27:22It most certainly is and do you mind leaving? Yes. I best get out of the way. Busy though, isn't it?

0:27:22 > 0:27:25They are a bit like that, plasterers. They want their space.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28By tonight, it will be plasterboarded.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32And skimmed. So this area will have a kitchen in it tomorrow.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36There's 16 hungry plasterers, having it. You watch. You wait.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42I used to be a cab driver, a taxi driver. Do you know why I packed up?

0:27:42 > 0:27:45Why? I didn't like people talking behind my back!

0:27:47 > 0:27:51Talking behind my back! Yes? No? Nothing. Tough crowd.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56With the greenhouse up, the garden is really starting to take shape now

0:27:56 > 0:28:01and along with the usual suspects, we're being helped out today by some of Jan's mates from work.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03Including best friend Lynn.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08How has it been for Jan these last few years?

0:28:08 > 0:28:11It's been harder for Jan than anybody knows.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14Because people see Mo's disability

0:28:14 > 0:28:17but they don't see what Janet copes with.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21She works full-time, she is a mother. She does absolutely everything.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26She deserves this and Mo does. But especially her.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32She's going to love it.

0:28:32 > 0:28:36It's clear Jan and Mo have lots of friends.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39Jan has been there through all Mo's battles with injury,

0:28:39 > 0:28:43the stress of leaving the army and adapting back into civilian life.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47Working hard to not only look after Mo, but raise a family

0:28:47 > 0:28:50and keep a roof over their heads.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52You can see the kids are worried about him.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55Worried about, you know, how he is within himself.

0:28:55 > 0:28:59My worst fear is after he's had an operation that he's going to try

0:28:59 > 0:29:02and go down the stairs and end up at the bottom of a pile.

0:29:03 > 0:29:08And you are going to walk into that? Yes. That is why I ring him every day. I phone him every day.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10This has been very hard on you, all this, hasn't it?

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Do you see light at the end of the tunnel?

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I don't necessarily see light at the end of the tunnel.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34I see it as, this is how life is.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38What do you make of the fact that all of these

0:29:38 > 0:29:41builders are in there, changing things around you and the family?

0:29:41 > 0:29:44It's amazing but I can't quite...

0:29:44 > 0:29:49I can hear you saying it but in my head it's sort of like, why?

0:29:49 > 0:29:53Because they think what's happened to him is unfair and they think

0:29:53 > 0:29:56they can put themselves out and make a difference.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58They will be making a difference all right.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07You wait until you see it. It's lovely.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12I'm not supposed to give anything away but it is lovely.

0:30:14 > 0:30:18It will make life easier for you and the kids and Mo.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21And maybe you will see it as a new beginning. I hope so.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33Well, I told her a bit of a white lie.

0:30:33 > 0:30:35The house doesn't look great at the moment,

0:30:35 > 0:30:39but it will do and that is thanks to everyone on site, including Chris

0:30:39 > 0:30:43and his team of 16 plasterers who have put in a monumental effort,

0:30:43 > 0:30:46which is great news as we've only got three days left.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50That is the way to skim a kitchen. It wouldn't happen in the real world, would it?

0:30:53 > 0:30:56Just goes to prove you don't have to wear a cape to be a superhero.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02With every inch of this house plastered, we can start to turn our thoughts to kitting the place out.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04There's a new kitchen going in,

0:31:04 > 0:31:08which has been specially designed for Mo, with an eye-level oven

0:31:08 > 0:31:12and low work surface to make baking, one of his passions, easier for him.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16And talking of cakes. Can we interest you in....

0:31:16 > 0:31:19Look at that! Or maybe... Or maybe...

0:31:19 > 0:31:22That's enough. No. Wait! Or maybe...

0:31:22 > 0:31:25I'm going to have a banoffee. You made all of these, did you?

0:31:25 > 0:31:30Thank you very much. That's very kind of you. Thank you very much. Very clever. I couldn't make those.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34Have you got someone here working on the build? Yes. My dad and my brother.

0:31:34 > 0:31:35What about your girl? I know.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38I'm the chief cake taster! Is that your job, is it? Yes.

0:31:38 > 0:31:43My brother actually likes baking bacon and cheese muffins.

0:31:43 > 0:31:47Bacon and cheese muffins? That sounds nice. That's tomorrow.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50That's tomorrow! What?

0:31:52 > 0:31:56We don't believe a bacon and cheese muffin can taste nice.

0:31:56 > 0:31:59No, not at all. No, I'm not having that.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03That would just be weird, wouldn't it? I'd like to see you try!

0:32:06 > 0:32:08What do you mean, hint? What hint?

0:32:08 > 0:32:11With the new Mo-friendly lay out of the house taking shape,

0:32:11 > 0:32:15we can start to see how the design is going to help him in the future.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18To get this right, we have been working closely with Mo's

0:32:18 > 0:32:20occupational therapist, Francis.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23So what do you think? It looks brilliant.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25I can't believe the difference.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28I came on Friday and it wasn't even plastered then.

0:32:28 > 0:32:32The kitchen wasn't in. The space, the doors are wide. It's excellent.

0:32:32 > 0:32:36So not only does it look beautiful, it's actually effective for Mo.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Yes. He will be able to...

0:32:38 > 0:32:43If he's using his wheelchair, he'll be able to get around.

0:32:43 > 0:32:48He can enter the bedroom, he can enter the bathroom, use the kitchen, use the oven.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51We are designing it for wheelchair use because it makes life easier

0:32:51 > 0:32:54for him if he uses a wheelchair at least some of the time.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Yes, and we don't know what the future holds.

0:32:56 > 0:33:00I think it's good that we make sure we meet his current needs

0:33:00 > 0:33:02and longer-term needs as well.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Coming to terms with leaving the Armed Forces and re-entering

0:33:07 > 0:33:11Civvy Street is tough enough, even without Mo's injuries.

0:33:11 > 0:33:16Helping him through that transition has been his old friend and ex-Royal Engineer, Roy.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20Tell us about Mo himself. He strikes us as a very solid, very likeable lad.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22But he seems to be finding it difficult to come to terms

0:33:22 > 0:33:25with the fact that he can't go running and jogging

0:33:25 > 0:33:27and doing all the things he did before.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29When I first met him, he had a slight injury,

0:33:29 > 0:33:31which a lot of ex-servicemen have.

0:33:31 > 0:33:36I've known him over 20 years. He was a really fit character.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40But over the years, the injury has worsened and worsened and also,

0:33:40 > 0:33:43it's dragging poor old Jan down as well.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46She has been solid all the way through.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50But, you know, it's a strain on her as well.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52I can see by the way you're talking about him,

0:33:52 > 0:33:56you are very emotional about the family and about him. Yes.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58What do you make of what we've done?

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Well, we've destroyed it so far but you know where we are heading.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04It looks fantastic. I'm so... Wow! Pleased.

0:34:04 > 0:34:08I am so... Words...

0:34:08 > 0:34:10I'm filling up.

0:34:11 > 0:34:16Sorry. Come with me. Grab a crash hat and I'll show you what we are up to.

0:34:16 > 0:34:21The last time I spoke to Mo, he told me he'd had his life.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24At 46, he thinks his injuries have robbed him of a future.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26It's just not right.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30And it's this which has been playing on my mind throughout the build

0:34:30 > 0:34:34and I must admit I'm struggling to try and help Mo find a way of moving forward.

0:34:34 > 0:34:38So I've contacted a close ex-army mate of mine, Ken Haines,

0:34:38 > 0:34:42who's been working with ex-servicemen, many of whom are injured, to see if he can help.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46If we can somehow get Mo to see this build as a fresh start,

0:34:46 > 0:34:51I'm hoping it will at least be a foundation for a brighter future for him and the family.

0:34:51 > 0:34:56I'm just hoping Ken can relate to Mo in a way I can't.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00I'm going to get you down to Bristol to come and see the guys down at my place.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02Some of them are very much like you.

0:35:02 > 0:35:06"I don't want to be a burden", all that kind of stuff. That is not right.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10You are entitled to your life. You are entitled to your aspirations.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13You are entitled to enjoy your life.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Because at the end of the day, if you don't,

0:35:15 > 0:35:18it's going to have a detrimental effect on you in the long-term.

0:35:18 > 0:35:22It will drive you into the ground. It will drive you into the ground.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24The aim is to go up. The only way is up.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27I like my family to enjoy what they are doing.

0:35:27 > 0:35:29Going with their friends and doing whatever.

0:35:29 > 0:35:34For my son, if he wants to go to a match or a party or whatever,

0:35:34 > 0:35:36I don't want him at home staying with me,

0:35:36 > 0:35:39pushing me around the house or taking me to the toilet.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43You know they don't just cope with you. You know that they love you.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45You're not something they have to cope with.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48From my early time, I missed a lot of their...

0:35:52 > 0:35:54The growing up. Yes.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57Of course you did, because you were away serving your country.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03I wanted to be with them and do things.

0:36:05 > 0:36:10So when you then came out of the army and had the time to do them, you weren't physically able to.

0:36:10 > 0:36:16Yes, definitely. You are terribly hard on yourself. You just got hurt.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18It's your service that hurt you but that's not your fault.

0:36:18 > 0:36:24That's not your fault. There are a lot of people who got injured badly.

0:36:24 > 0:36:28A lot of people who had niggly injuries they can never get rid of that saw them

0:36:28 > 0:36:33being invalided out of the armed services, but it's not their fault. Definitely not their fault.

0:36:33 > 0:36:37You can't keep being angry with yourself because of the situation you are in.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41I will give you a cast-iron guarantee that when you go back to your house,

0:36:41 > 0:36:46it will be absolutely perfectly usable for you to move and spend time with your family.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49So you are going to have to do some promising in return,

0:36:49 > 0:36:54to maybe think again about some sense of forgiving yourself for getting yourself into this situation

0:36:54 > 0:36:58because you can't keep going through life thinking like that.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02And I promise you that I'll give you all the help I can to get you that support.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Back on the site, every single person is also doing what

0:37:12 > 0:37:17they can to help Mo, working into the night to give him the independence he deserves.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21Everything in the house is being fine-tuned for Mo and the rest

0:37:21 > 0:37:26of the family to make his home life as easy and stress-free as possible.

0:37:26 > 0:37:29Do you think that looks right or do you want it lower?

0:37:29 > 0:37:32It can come down six inches. But for the wheelchair...

0:37:32 > 0:37:35Looks wise, it would be better a bit lower but I think for Mo, this is better.

0:37:35 > 0:37:39In the new extension, the wet room is really starting to look the business.

0:37:39 > 0:37:44We are doing the final polish of the tiles with the sweatshirt. I like to see a tradesman!

0:37:44 > 0:37:48I tell you what, you knocked that out in record time, didn't you?

0:37:48 > 0:37:52Nice! What do you think, Christopher? It's somewhere to wash, isn't it? That's nice!

0:37:52 > 0:37:56Praise indeed! In many ways, your builder is defined by his headwear.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59I've become rather attached to mine, although I can't say Julian has.

0:37:59 > 0:38:04You're saying this hat is not working for me? I look bad in a hat, is that what you're saying?

0:38:04 > 0:38:08Terrible. If accentuates your features. And you don't think that's a good thing?

0:38:08 > 0:38:13I don't think that's a good thing, no. You're nothing without your hair.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15I like the brushed forward look. See what I mean?

0:38:15 > 0:38:17It's a better look, is it?

0:38:17 > 0:38:20It's like a really bad toupee when you do that.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22He looks a bit like Jim Carrey like that.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27With me, it's all about looks. And him!

0:38:28 > 0:38:30Look, the kitchen is just about done.

0:38:30 > 0:38:35Great vibe on the site, isn't it? It's great. I'd love to do another one. Would you? Really? I would.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37Without a doubt. Isn't that amazing?

0:38:37 > 0:38:40We've just taken advantage of the man for several days

0:38:40 > 0:38:43to work in the most uncomfortable environment possible, to put in this

0:38:43 > 0:38:47beautiful kitchen for no pay at all, and you want to come and do another one. Why not?

0:38:48 > 0:38:50That's the great British builder, that is.

0:38:52 > 0:38:53Wonderful!

0:38:58 > 0:39:00It's the final day and we are almost there.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03How are we getting on with the job? Are we going to get it finished?

0:39:03 > 0:39:06ALL: Yes. Fairly confident? ALL: Yes. Lovely. All right.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11Don't be fooled. We may sound a little deflated on the outside

0:39:11 > 0:39:14but just like this mattress, inside we are raring to go.

0:39:14 > 0:39:19It has been vacuum-packed. All the air's been sucked out of it, which shrinks it right up.

0:39:19 > 0:39:23As soon as you cut the seal, the air rushes in and it expands and fills up.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26It's like getting up in the morning and stretching out.

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Give it another go now, Bill.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34That is it. That is me. Anyone want to join me?

0:39:36 > 0:39:38I'll take you down the gym!

0:39:39 > 0:39:43But the morning has not started well for one of us - our designer, Gabriel.

0:39:44 > 0:39:48Just to let you know, your lights, your bedside lights, they still haven't arrived.

0:39:48 > 0:39:52Why did he have to come and tell me that right now when you're here?

0:39:52 > 0:39:55Why are we having bedside lights delivered on the last day?

0:39:55 > 0:40:00Because they were apparently delivered earlier in the week, but actually in real life they weren't.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05How lame does that sound? So technically, they weren't delivered.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08On the delivery note it said they were here but they weren't here.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12We will be done in time, won't we? Or are we in the double jeopardy...

0:40:12 > 0:40:15Do I need to say something, like they do on telly,

0:40:15 > 0:40:18"Will we finish in time?"

0:40:18 > 0:40:21I mean, obviously, you know we've never had one where we haven't finished in time

0:40:21 > 0:40:25and if we had, we would just work into the middle of the night to get it done.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27But you could play along too.

0:40:27 > 0:40:31If I do some jeopardy now, because telly people like jeopardy so when we come to edit this together,

0:40:31 > 0:40:34if I do a jeopardy thing now, "Will we finish or won't we?"

0:40:34 > 0:40:36DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:40:38 > 0:40:42But we will finish, won't we? We will finish, but I want it to look beautiful and perfect.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45I've spent a long time trying to get it beautiful and perfect.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48I just saw Katie. It's fine.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51The bedside tables haven't turned up either.

0:40:52 > 0:40:56Oh, dear! It's going to be a long day and a long night by the sounds of it.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59But before we show off the house to the family tomorrow,

0:40:59 > 0:41:01I really need to do just one last thing.

0:41:01 > 0:41:05Being a dad myself, I know how tricky it can sometimes be for fathers and sons

0:41:05 > 0:41:08to get through to each other, to tell each other how they feel.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12It's important for me to try and get Mo to see that Jordan doesn't

0:41:12 > 0:41:15need him to be Superman, just a dad.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17He loves him for who he is.

0:41:17 > 0:41:20You are in a unique position here that he's watching television and he

0:41:20 > 0:41:23can't interrupt you, so what is the one thing you would say to your dad?

0:41:23 > 0:41:26I just want him to be safe and be able to get about

0:41:26 > 0:41:30and have his own independence and enjoy his life. Be happy.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33Be happy, yes. He thinks he's a burden on us.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36We tell him he's not in our way. We are doing it because we love him.

0:41:36 > 0:41:41Even though it's hurting him he'll still go around on his crutches, regardless.

0:41:41 > 0:41:46Your message to him is, you love him and he's not a burden. Yes.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51He'll hear that now. Good.

0:41:51 > 0:41:55Are you looking forward to tomorrow? Are you looking forward to seeing the house? Very.

0:41:55 > 0:42:00What is it that you need? Downstairs toilet. That's it, really.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02It has always been that, hasn't it? Yes.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04He's struggled with that for so long.

0:42:04 > 0:42:09So anything above a downstairs toilet would be a bonus? Yeah.

0:42:11 > 0:42:13Big bonus.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16They are not asking for much, are they?

0:42:16 > 0:42:20It's the final push and we can start to see the culmination of all this hard work.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23In the back garden, Rich and the team are just putting

0:42:23 > 0:42:26the finishing touches to a brilliant new outdoor kitchen.

0:42:26 > 0:42:32Look at this! I haven't seen this before. Barbecue built by the chaps. Outdoor kitchen.

0:42:32 > 0:42:35And it will work whether he is standing or sitting, won't it? Yes.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37It's exactly the right height for both.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40That is quite something, that is. How has it been then?

0:42:40 > 0:42:44We are getting towards the end of it now and you have been here from the beginning,

0:42:44 > 0:42:46so what do you make of it all? I've really enjoyed it.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49It's amazing what gets done and the effort that everybody puts in.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52It is one big team effort. Yes, loved it.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55Have you really? Yes, I have. This is really looking the part.

0:42:55 > 0:43:00I can't wait to see it when it's all tidied up and we can show it to them. Amazing. Thank you, chaps.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04And in the dining room, there's just one last thing to fit.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07Not only have brothers Mark and Steve donated the steel girders

0:43:07 > 0:43:09holding up the room we're standing in,

0:43:09 > 0:43:13they have designed and built this handmade metallic masterpiece.

0:43:13 > 0:43:18Look at that! What you think? That's lovely. It finishes it off lovely.

0:43:18 > 0:43:23It looks beautiful. That is lovely. That's the best thing I've seen all day.

0:43:23 > 0:43:24APPLAUSE

0:43:25 > 0:43:27Even at this late stage,

0:43:27 > 0:43:31the generosity of the trades here in Maidstone is amazing to see.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35But what a difference this will make to the lives of one family.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44Just nine days ago,

0:43:44 > 0:43:48we arrived here in Maidstone to find a family at crisis point.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51Mo's 20 year army career had left him

0:43:51 > 0:43:54with sustained injuries that, even after countless operations,

0:43:54 > 0:43:56were getting progressively worse,

0:43:56 > 0:43:59leaving him a virtual prisoner in his own home.

0:43:59 > 0:44:02Because of what I'm going through, I feel that I've had my life.

0:44:02 > 0:44:06To call it a day in your life, at 46, isn't right.

0:44:06 > 0:44:09Even with the love and support of his family,

0:44:09 > 0:44:12Mo was still suffering in a house which was clearly unfit for his needs.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16It was a situation we could never have solved on our own

0:44:16 > 0:44:22and it's only due to the monumental effort of an army of local Maidstone trades that we've done it.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25We've knocked through and completely opened up the downstairs

0:44:25 > 0:44:28to create this open-plan kitchen diner which is now a space

0:44:28 > 0:44:31the whole family can use together.

0:44:31 > 0:44:35The Shaker style kitchen combines simple elegant lines with the lowered work surface

0:44:35 > 0:44:41and raised oven to make cooking as easy as possible for Mo.

0:44:41 > 0:44:45There's a super efficient wood-burning stove, helping give this house added warmth,

0:44:45 > 0:44:48which massively helps with Mo's knee pain.

0:44:48 > 0:44:52It's finished with raised legs so Mo can reach the door more easily.

0:44:55 > 0:44:58Above all else, the aim of this build was to solve

0:44:58 > 0:45:00the problem of Mo having to use the stairs.

0:45:00 > 0:45:04To do this, we have added a ground floor extension to the rear of the house,

0:45:04 > 0:45:07allowing us to create a master bedroom suite for Mo and Jan.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12There's now a downstairs wet room, complete with rainforest shower

0:45:12 > 0:45:16and wheelchair access in case Mo needs to use his chair in the future.

0:45:16 > 0:45:20And of course, the most important feature of all - the downstairs loo.

0:45:22 > 0:45:25The front room is finished in neutral tones with

0:45:25 > 0:45:28accents of colour on the cushions and curtains.

0:45:28 > 0:45:33We've added these simple but stylish built-in shelving units either side of the old fireplace,

0:45:33 > 0:45:37which is pretty much the only thing we left standing in the entire house.

0:45:40 > 0:45:41With Mo and Jan sleeping downstairs,

0:45:41 > 0:45:44upstairs has now become a parent-free zone.

0:45:44 > 0:45:49Charelle and Karissa now have a bedroom each for the first time in their lives.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52Charelle's room has a classical yet relaxed feel,

0:45:52 > 0:45:55which is very much in keeping with the period of the house.

0:45:55 > 0:45:58Whilst Karissa's room is finished in soft blues,

0:45:58 > 0:46:02offset with simple but timeless bedroom furniture.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05Jordan's room has been transformed with this stunning

0:46:05 > 0:46:10custom-made shelving unit for his games console and TV.

0:46:11 > 0:46:15And the old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished

0:46:15 > 0:46:17with these cool subway tiles.

0:46:18 > 0:46:22Outside, the entire garden has now been redesigned and I've got

0:46:22 > 0:46:25to say, Rich and the lads have really gone the extra mile.

0:46:25 > 0:46:29They've created this superb new outdoor kitchen area so Mo

0:46:29 > 0:46:34and Jan can have their friends over for a barbecue in the summer months.

0:46:34 > 0:46:37The whole garden has been levelled and we've used railway sleepers

0:46:37 > 0:46:41to create these stylish raised beds to make gardening easier for Mo.

0:46:41 > 0:46:44Along with this, we've put in an amazing greenhouse with wide

0:46:44 > 0:46:48access doorway and automatic temperature adjustment.

0:46:48 > 0:46:51The real challenge with this build was not only making Mo's home

0:46:51 > 0:46:54environment better, but also trying to help Mo confront his injuries

0:46:54 > 0:46:58and civilian life, which I know he still struggles with.

0:46:58 > 0:46:59Rather than dwelling in the past,

0:46:59 > 0:47:03I'm truly hoping this build can give this family the fresh start I know

0:47:03 > 0:47:08they deserve and give them a chance to build a more positive future.

0:47:09 > 0:47:10Open your eyes.

0:47:25 > 0:47:28Your beautiful new fire. Do you know where you are in the house? No.

0:47:28 > 0:47:31Not yet, no. Have a look at your beautiful new kitchen.

0:47:37 > 0:47:40We've spoken to your occupational therapist in the design of this as well.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43If you choose to use your wheelchair to move about,

0:47:43 > 0:47:46you'll find the floors throughout the ground floor are all level

0:47:46 > 0:47:51and the doors are all wide enough for you to move around, if that's the way you would choose to go.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54If you want to stand up, like you are, you've got the work surface there.

0:47:54 > 0:47:58If you want to sit down and work, you've got a lower work surface to work there.

0:47:58 > 0:48:02The ovens are placed at the right height that you can use them standing up.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05Or if you are in the wheelchair, you can still use them sitting down.

0:48:07 > 0:48:10I'm going to have to go another way, I think. What do you make of it all?

0:48:10 > 0:48:13It's amazing. I'm speechless.

0:48:15 > 0:48:16This is...

0:48:16 > 0:48:19This is as much as I could ask for.

0:48:19 > 0:48:23What else did you need? I'm sorry. We haven't dealt with the thing you wanted. A downstairs loo.

0:48:23 > 0:48:26A downstairs toilet, yes. If you want to head off in that direction.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35Wow!

0:48:39 > 0:48:45Not quite what you were expecting? I didn't know what to expect.

0:48:47 > 0:48:51It's nice. Very nice. I can't quite believe it's mine.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57So you need to turn around and open the door behind you.

0:49:04 > 0:49:07Rainforest... Rainforest shower.

0:49:07 > 0:49:10The people involved in this have gone the extra mile

0:49:10 > 0:49:14on everything they've done. I mean, the tiling is beautiful.

0:49:14 > 0:49:17All the workmanship that's gone in. So much work.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21This is like staying in a posh hotel. Yes. And it's yours.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23I don't feel like it's right.

0:49:24 > 0:49:28I'm thinking, OK, when do we check out?

0:49:32 > 0:49:35Oh, wow! We've tidied up the hallway a little bit.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38We kept your front door because we knew how much you loved that.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40So, your living room area. Let's have a look, shall we?

0:49:48 > 0:49:49All right?

0:49:52 > 0:49:54It's OK.

0:50:09 > 0:50:12It's a lot, isn't it? A lot to take in.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18What is it that's got to you? Something you're thinking has got to.

0:50:18 > 0:50:24It's not bricks and mortar that has suddenly made you emotional. It's something you are thinking.

0:50:24 > 0:50:26For people to come in here.

0:50:26 > 0:50:29Their effort. Their time.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33This is our first home.

0:50:33 > 0:50:37Just coming in and seeing pictures, proper pictures on the wall.

0:50:37 > 0:50:40What have these builders done for you? It's like a new life.

0:50:42 > 0:50:43Like being reborn.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46In return for this, will you make me one promise?

0:50:46 > 0:50:50You'll never use the expression again, "I've had my life".

0:50:50 > 0:50:53I promise you. I make that promise.

0:50:53 > 0:50:55Your wonderful young adults,

0:50:55 > 0:50:59when I was asking them about it, and I said, "What do you think?"

0:50:59 > 0:51:02And they said, "We hope this is going to be a brand-new beginning.

0:51:02 > 0:51:04"And Dad will be smiling more

0:51:04 > 0:51:07"and we'll be able to do family things and we will be able to

0:51:07 > 0:51:10"mix in together and just have a great Christmas,"

0:51:10 > 0:51:12and those kinds of things.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15They are over the moon for you. Properly over the moon for you.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18They see this as a brand-new beginning. This is draw the line.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21New beginning? New beginning.

0:51:23 > 0:51:27We were very aware that we need it to work for you too, so when you are ready, open your eyes.

0:51:35 > 0:51:38You want a little look at the kitchen because I know

0:51:38 > 0:51:41the kitchen is an important part of family life, isn't it?

0:51:41 > 0:51:46I love it. It's crazy. It looks pretty, doesn't it? Yes. Oh, my God!

0:51:48 > 0:51:51It's really nice. Mum and Dad are going to love this.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Dad's going to love that shower. Definitely.

0:51:55 > 0:52:01So how have we done so far? Brilliantly. Very good.

0:52:01 > 0:52:06The only thing we need to do now is go and look at the non-adult area because of course the upstairs

0:52:06 > 0:52:09now becomes yours. Ready to go and have a look?

0:52:09 > 0:52:10Yes. Come on then.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19Wow! It's amazing.

0:52:20 > 0:52:23We wanted to get as much cupboard space and space for you to

0:52:23 > 0:52:25put your computers, your music and all your other things in.

0:52:25 > 0:52:29Very difficult in a short room to make all the space. Are you happy with it?

0:52:29 > 0:52:31It's really good. I didn't expect this at all.

0:52:31 > 0:52:36He's a bit gobsmacked, I think. Yes. He's very quiet, isn't he?

0:52:39 > 0:52:41Oh, my God!

0:52:42 > 0:52:46It's amazing. Wow! I love it.

0:52:50 > 0:52:52It's nice.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57Don't cry. Oh, my God.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01Obviously, the sewing kit because we know you like sewing.

0:53:01 > 0:53:06A table to do your work on or write love letters or whatever it is girls do. I don't know.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09A pretty bed. Do you like it? Yes.

0:53:11 > 0:53:14Do you want to see yours now? Yes.

0:53:14 > 0:53:16Come on.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22Oh, my God!

0:53:24 > 0:53:26Pretty cool, huh? Yes.

0:53:28 > 0:53:31I never imagined it like this.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34Does this make it feel like a proper family home now? Yes, definitely.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39We couldn't imagine it, could we? No.

0:53:39 > 0:53:42Why do you think it's hit you so hard emotionally?

0:53:42 > 0:53:46Because it has just made it easier for everybody, especially Mum and Dad.

0:53:46 > 0:53:50We can finally start again and everything will be better.

0:53:52 > 0:53:54That's pretty cool, isn't it? Yes.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57You just need a bathroom now, don't you?

0:53:57 > 0:54:00You've got have a bathroom between you, haven't you? BOTH: Yes.

0:54:00 > 0:54:04Is there any chance Jordan will ever get any time in the bathroom?

0:54:04 > 0:54:06Probably not. Not with us two.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10Right, let's have a look at this bathroom. Come on.

0:54:15 > 0:54:19I love it! It's all ours! Pretty cool, isn't it? ALL: Yes.

0:54:19 > 0:54:22I'm glad you like it. I'm really glad you like it.

0:54:28 > 0:54:30Hi, daughter. All right?

0:54:30 > 0:54:32It's all right. Do you love it? Yes.

0:54:32 > 0:54:36I've got one other thing to show you. Come and have a look.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45Oh, my God! We've done slightly better than your old barbecue.

0:54:45 > 0:54:49What we've got is a full built-in barbecue kitchen for you.

0:54:49 > 0:54:54A nice little area for you to sit and have a glass of wine out here if you want to, of an evening. Kids.

0:54:54 > 0:54:56And if the parents want to come out and join too!

0:54:59 > 0:55:02Obviously, a nice table and chairs.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05Raised beds all the way along again so if you wanted to work on them

0:55:05 > 0:55:08and plant your own veggies once the weather comes around,

0:55:08 > 0:55:11you can either do that sitting down or standing up because we put

0:55:11 > 0:55:13the beds to exactly the right height for either.

0:55:13 > 0:55:16You'll notice you're getting along fine on the crutches

0:55:16 > 0:55:19going up and down the garden, but it works with the wheelchair as well.

0:55:19 > 0:55:21You can get all the way to the bottom of the garden and if

0:55:21 > 0:55:24we carry on to the end, you'll find the greenhouse has double doors.

0:55:24 > 0:55:26Oh, my God!

0:55:26 > 0:55:30What's it like seeing your dad walking around? Amazing.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33He's able to get up here without struggling which is good.

0:55:33 > 0:55:36It's going to be good for all of us.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38Good enough?

0:55:38 > 0:55:40LAUGHTER

0:55:40 > 0:55:42Say no more.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49APPLAUSE

0:56:07 > 0:56:12Obviously, I've spoken to some of you guys when it first started.

0:56:12 > 0:56:16All I want to say is, from the bottom of our hearts...

0:56:17 > 0:56:21..it's very humbling...

0:56:26 > 0:56:29APPLAUSE

0:56:34 > 0:56:38It's very humbling knowing that all you guys

0:56:38 > 0:56:44have spent time, your own free time on this project.

0:56:44 > 0:56:48It means so much and I could go on

0:56:48 > 0:56:53but I just want to thank every single one of you for the time

0:56:53 > 0:56:58and effort in making this a new beginning for us,

0:56:58 > 0:57:00especially for me,

0:57:00 > 0:57:04but thank you all... for a downstairs toilet.

0:57:04 > 0:57:05APPLAUSE

0:57:12 > 0:57:16Tell these guys what it means from your point of view for your mum and dad.

0:57:16 > 0:57:19After so long of going through so much trouble trying to get

0:57:19 > 0:57:23what we needed for him, it's just helped so much,

0:57:23 > 0:57:27and all of this has helped, their smiles on their faces.

0:57:27 > 0:57:30It's just helped a lot.

0:57:30 > 0:57:32APPLAUSE

0:57:39 > 0:57:40Cheers. Congratulations. Thanks.

0:57:40 > 0:57:43I hope you got what you wanted.

0:57:43 > 0:57:46Cheers. It's been a pleasure.

0:57:46 > 0:57:48Cracking people round here.

0:57:56 > 0:57:59It doesn't really matter whether you agree with what we send

0:57:59 > 0:58:02our young people in the forces around the world to do.

0:58:02 > 0:58:05They do their duty to the best of their ability,

0:58:05 > 0:58:08and if during the course of those duties, they suffer injuries,

0:58:08 > 0:58:12it's our responsibility as a society to look after them, isn't it?

0:58:12 > 0:58:16Somehow Mo and his family slipped through the net of support

0:58:16 > 0:58:18that should have been there for them.

0:58:18 > 0:58:20As a result, they needed someone else to help
