0:00:03 > 0:00:07Hello and welcome to DIY SOS, this week coming to you from Dudley in the West Midlands.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11We're here to help a family trapped in a building site,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14after trying desperately to make room for their three children.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18By trying to make it better for the kiddies,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20if anything, we've made it worse.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22That's how I feel.

0:00:22 > 0:00:27A family struggling to see a future while dealing with a serious genetic condition.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30People say, "I don't know how you do it."

0:00:30 > 0:00:33But if they're your own, you deal with it, don't you?

0:00:33 > 0:00:35I love him to bits. I'd never change him.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37But we can't do it alone.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41With only ten days to do the job, we need a small army.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Is there anybody out there?

0:00:43 > 0:00:45ALL: Yes!

0:00:48 > 0:00:52- Getting this family back in that house is second to none, really.- Come on then.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54I'm Joanne's brother.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59APPLAUSE

0:00:59 > 0:01:03This is DIY SOS - The Big Build.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15This is Dudley and I have to be honest, I am surprised how pretty it is.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Here live dinner lady Joanne and factory butcher Wayne,

0:01:20 > 0:01:26who desperately need our help to turn their small three-bedroom house into a home for their children.

0:01:26 > 0:01:3122-year-old Katie, nine-year-old Ginny and Jack, who is seven.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35- Dad, Mum.- That's mummy's house, look, and Daddy's house.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38In 2006, their lives were thrown into disarray

0:01:38 > 0:01:41when all three children tested positive

0:01:41 > 0:01:45for an inherited genetic condition called Fragile X Syndrome.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48There's different levels of the complaint.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51We've got the three levels of it.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55Kate, that's a carrier. Ginny, that's mild,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and Jack, that's got the full.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04We all worry. We all get anxious.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07But there is like a brake in the brain to, you know, stop it.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Whereas with Jack, and with Ginny a little bit,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14they can't seem to get that brake on as quick.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18That's why Jack's emotions, it's just out of his control.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20With symptoms similar to autism,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23severe learning and behavioural difficulties are common.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27Being away from familiar surroundings causes Jack massive anxiety,

0:02:27 > 0:02:31so making their home a safe haven is a top priority.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Ginny will need help as she starts to mature into an adult.

0:02:36 > 0:02:41Jack will need to be looked after for the rest of his life, always.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45With Ginny's development already slowed,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48being forced to share a bedroom is further holding her back.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Ginny, more or less, mimics children.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58She finds it hard to communicate to other children her age.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02That's why, because she's with Jack all the while,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04she's only mimicking him.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09So she looks far behind her years because of that.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16So it would be nice for Ginny to perhaps, I know this sounds awful, but to escape a little bit.

0:03:16 > 0:03:2016 months ago, they decided they had to do something,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24so they invested everything they had into extending their house

0:03:24 > 0:03:27with Wayne taking on the build himself.

0:03:27 > 0:03:33We started out in 2010 and it was going to take six to eight weeks.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37It's took a year just to get it like this.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40- It took a lot more money than we thought.- Yes.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46And here we are now, in the rubbish.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49They've lived in a building site for more than a year.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53The disruption and noise making Jack and Ginny's anxieties worse.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57Big sister Katie saw the strains increase.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Mum was at the end of her tether, ready to pull her hair out

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and tears started and the stress started.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08The tears started. I was like, "Mum, it's going to be all right."

0:04:08 > 0:04:11And of course, it just got to the point

0:04:11 > 0:04:13where we need help now to do it.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16By trying to make it better for the kiddies,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18it seems as if we've made it worse.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Jack doesn't really want to come home.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I feel...

0:04:32 > 0:04:34I don't want to do it any more.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37I can't do it any more.

0:04:37 > 0:04:43If you could do this house, the kids would want to come home

0:04:43 > 0:04:45and I would want to come home.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I don't ever want to come home lately.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53And that's why we're here.

0:04:53 > 0:04:58To help Wayne and Joanne turn their house into a safe and welcoming sanctuary.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00I think for most people,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03taking on an extension build would be stressful enough in itself.

0:05:03 > 0:05:08- When the rest of the house is in the state it's in, it would make it doubly stressful.- Yes.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11And with the specific needs the kids have got,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14it's a lot to be carrying around on your shoulders in one go.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18- You feel you've failed.- Especially when it's been going on for so long.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21- You feel you've failed?- Yes. - We do.- Failed who?- The kiddies.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Yes.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- It hasn't quite gone according to plan.- No.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33You can see it's been a testing time for all five of them.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38With so much going on, Katie's support and care

0:05:38 > 0:05:41for her half brother and sister has been vital.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45- Hello.- Hello.- What are we up to?

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Drawing Megan, my cousin.

0:05:48 > 0:05:53- It's my cousin as well.- Is that what Megan looks like?- No!- Yes.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58You know that we've come to try and change the house.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01How would you like to house to be? What things do you need?

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Just something nice where we can all relax and chill

0:06:04 > 0:06:08and not be under one another's feet and Ginny can have her friends round.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12And her to have a nice bedroom and Jack to have his own little space.

0:06:12 > 0:06:17You know, just somewhere nice where we can have the family round on a Sunday and things like that.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19It would just be nice.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23If we manage to turn this into a home for you and the children, how does life change?

0:06:25 > 0:06:30- It would be lovely.- 100%. - It would be lovely to come back home.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Well, I tell you what, we'll do our best. We'll do our best.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Jack sometimes struggles with meeting new people but thankfully,

0:06:42 > 0:06:45our motley crew aren't that scary.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47Ugly, but not scary!

0:06:47 > 0:06:51- Nice to meet you all.- Hello. - Hello, young man. How are you?

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- We need to get going. We'll see you soon. See you later in the week. Is that all right?- Bye bye.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01Time to call up the troops and prepare for battle.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04We've got 40 tradesman expected on site today alone.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07So look, have a laugh...

0:07:07 > 0:07:10Normally, I like to do the pep talk but on this one, I don't have to.

0:07:10 > 0:07:15I'm Joanne's brother. From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19If anybody needs any help, me and our kid, this is Joanne's uncle,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23if you need anything moving, just give us a shout and we'll muck in with you.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27But once again, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29APPLAUSE

0:07:34 > 0:07:40Time for a short intro from build manager, Mark. Short! Get it?!

0:07:40 > 0:07:44Today, what we're looking for is a really clean, empty, clear site,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47so that tomorrow all the construction can start.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- Morning, Bill. All right?- Yes. That wall's coming down there, is it?- Yes.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57- So I'll clear all the cooker and everything.- Yes, please.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02- Is he the only electrician we've got at the moment?- Bill's the only electrician.- That's terrifying!

0:08:02 > 0:08:08- We had the electricians in before he got here, so he hasn't got anything to do.- Oh, good. Thank God for that!

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Billy might not have much to do, but everyone else does.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15It's a bit like picking teams in the playground, this.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19You and Matt are down here with Bill and Darren.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22- The boys here. Who have we got? - Another Darren.- Another Darren.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24- And those two...- Carl.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26This has all got confusing already.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Who are the four that are staying down here?

0:08:28 > 0:08:33- Darren, Dean...- Lee. - And Darryl.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- Matt's over here with Jules. - Matt's with Jules over here.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- Right, where am I?- You're floating.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41- We'll use you as a floater. - I'm a floater?- Yes!

0:08:41 > 0:08:45- I'll be floating over here.- OK. You float over there. Go and bob around!

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Go on, floater!

0:08:48 > 0:08:53I'm not sure I like that. Day one and I'm already getting stick.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55How did you get to hear about this?

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Why have you given up your time to come and help us?

0:08:58 > 0:09:00A good friend of mine, it's his sister.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04So it's all in a good cause. At the end of the day, it's nice to be nice.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Local community. You can't do enough for local communities.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11We couldn't do it without you guys. We're like the little wheel that gets the big wheel going

0:09:11 > 0:09:16and to get this family back in that house is second to none, really.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19- Come on then. Let's start. - We're nearly there, look.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24You know, sometimes I wonder if we are best known

0:09:24 > 0:09:27for our building skills or our love of cakes?

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- You made them, did you?- Yes. - Thank you very much.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35- What's your name?- Kieran. - Hello, Kieran. I'm Billy.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37- They look very nice.- Can I try one?

0:09:37 > 0:09:42Which one shall I try? That one there? Ta, sweetheart.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46They're lovely, Kieran.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49I tell you what, you'll get another four hours work out of me now!

0:09:50 > 0:09:54That will be four hours then! In total! We haven't even had one yet.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58As usual, we get just nine days to finish the job. Why nine days?

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Because some bloke in London thought it was a good idea.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Talk me through it, then. What's the plan? What are we doing with this place?

0:10:07 > 0:10:10It might be a small house,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12but designer Charlie Luxton has big plans.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16I think that's the critical end and then work that way.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20He's worked on several of these builds before and despite some testing moments...

0:10:20 > 0:10:24- If you weren't on that thing, I'd thump you. You're pushing it.- ..he's come back for more.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29- Generally, you're quite well respected when you turn up on shows, aren't you?- I was!

0:10:29 > 0:10:32He's a bit of a perfectionist,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35but his determination has always produced impressive results.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38And ladies, he's quite hunky too!

0:10:38 > 0:10:42It's not a big house. It's going to be a lot bigger when the extension is added on.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46They embarked on a project with a plan that didn't really work.

0:10:46 > 0:10:52It's a small house, so I really tried to keep the circulation space as generous as possible.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55I know a lot of people think, make the rooms as big as possible,

0:10:55 > 0:10:59but you've got lots of tight rooms and very tight circulation space

0:10:59 > 0:11:02so I think it makes the house very claustrophobic.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06So just to give a little bit more generosity, little bit more space to the circulation,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09I think it will make the house feel a lot bigger.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13Charlie's plan is to knock through from the extension downstairs

0:11:13 > 0:11:17to make a kitchen and dining area big enough for all five of them.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21With Jack's condition, developments like potty training have been much slower,

0:11:21 > 0:11:27so to help make things easier for them all, we're going to put in both a utility room and a downstairs loo.

0:11:27 > 0:11:33Upstairs, Charlie plans to create a light and airy landing space with all the bedrooms feeding off it.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36To do this, we're going to demolish the existing bathroom.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38But as Jack loves running water,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41we're not just going to replace like-for-like.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45We are giving the family a main bathroom and an ensuite too.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47With Wayne and Joanne in the master bedroom,

0:11:47 > 0:11:51we'll move Katie out of the smallest room and put her into the big double room she deserves.

0:11:51 > 0:11:56Last, but no means least, it's vital Jack and Jenny get a bedroom each.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58But so they don't get too lonely,

0:11:58 > 0:12:00we're keeping them right next door to each other.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04Charlie's design will create the light, airy and spacious home

0:12:04 > 0:12:06the family dreamt of and desperately needed

0:12:06 > 0:12:09when they started the build more than a year ago.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12And he's proving he's smart outside of the house too

0:12:12 > 0:12:15with a little landscape designing.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19Jack really likes playing in the garden. He loves water.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22We might try and get a hand-operated pump.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26The water and the pumping is a good thing for them to do because it gives them agency.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- It makes them feel like they're doing something.- It gives them?- Agency.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- Agency?- Agency. It's a good word. I learnt that the other day.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35I thought it made the guy sound really clever so I thought I'd try on you!

0:12:35 > 0:12:40- You think I'm really clever now, don't you?- It gives them agency.- Yes.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42I'm not quite sure I know what it means!

0:12:44 > 0:12:47But I was impressed with it.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52We're propping up the ceiling now.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55We're going to take out all of this through here.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59So big steel has to go in through here, so we have to support the ceiling on both sides.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02There are plenty of people working on it, look.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05So far so good. We'll have this wall out in no time now.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Let's knock her open.

0:13:13 > 0:13:19Jules absolutely loves smashing down walls. The bigger the better. Sometimes, I wish we had two of him!

0:13:19 > 0:13:21But upstairs, there's discord.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26You can't just start stripping walls out in the house if it's the structural integrity of it.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- I get that.- It's like ripping a heart out of a lamb.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36You're going to take that out to put a wall up there to gain two foot.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38It's not two foot. It's much more.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42It comes back to here. So this all becomes open landing.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45But surely, it's living space you're trying to give them,

0:13:45 > 0:13:48not area at the top of the stairs. We're only here for nine days.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51But they're here for a lifetime.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55I appreciate that and they'll be absolutely overwhelmed when they come back.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58I think even more so if this wall is gone.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01I don't think they will notice it.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07That's why we have designers to design and builders to build.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09I wonder where that leaves me?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Probably with the full support of the team.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15- What's the craic with that kitchen utility room?- It's going very well.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18Knowlesy's tried to sow the seed of doubt,

0:14:18 > 0:14:20but don't worry about any of that.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- Why?- He thinks it's all going to fall down, doesn't he?

0:14:23 > 0:14:28- He's a presenter. He's a TV presenter.- Exactly. - What does he know about it?

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Are you not worried that wall is going to fall down?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34- It's absolutely fine. - I'm worried about my boys.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37I don't want it all coming down on your head. I want to look after you.

0:14:37 > 0:14:41- I imagine you knew that. He was being nice about me asking, wasn't he?- Obviously, yes.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45- Charlie was looking for you.- He's out the back. I'll go and find him.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47- Yes, you float that way. - Go on, floater!

0:14:47 > 0:14:49# Today I don't feel like doing anything. #

0:14:49 > 0:14:55If I'm not needed here, I might just sneak off to attend to some important business.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Maybe I should have told them where I was going.

0:14:58 > 0:14:59# I'm gonna kick my feet up... #

0:14:59 > 0:15:02- You haven't seen Nick, have you? Knowlesy.- No.

0:15:02 > 0:15:08- I'll look for him downstairs. - If you see him, I'm looking for him.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11# Leave a message at the tone

0:15:11 > 0:15:15# Today I swear I'm not doing anything

0:15:15 > 0:15:17# Nothing at all

0:15:17 > 0:15:19# Oooh, oooh, oooh. #

0:15:19 > 0:15:23What a fantastic day one. The boys are going great guns out there.

0:15:23 > 0:15:28Sparks is still bashing away in here. We've got the opening in the kitchen. Padstones are in. They're all drying.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31The steel is going in first thing in the morning.

0:15:31 > 0:15:36Shall we have a look upstairs? Chris has been knocking walls out up there and everything has been going on.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39The new stud work's gone in place. That's going to be our ensuite.

0:15:39 > 0:15:44This is going to be our main family bathroom in here, which is great.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47In here the boys are creating the new bedrooms.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51You're probably wondering why I'm doing this, because Nick normally does it.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53But we don't know where he is.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56You're auditioning for my job, that's what you're doing! Stop it!

0:15:58 > 0:16:02It's a beautiful morning in Dudley and as they say,

0:16:02 > 0:16:05an army marches on its stomach.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07- Where have you been?- Me?

0:16:07 > 0:16:11I was out doing some research around Dudley last night.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15No, no, no. From yesterday probably lunchtime you were missing.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19I like to do proper research. I don't just... I take it seriously.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22I went out and had a look around the town.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26So that's not you outside Number Ten Downing Street?

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Where did you get that?

0:16:28 > 0:16:32- You know them social networking sites?- Yes.- It's all over it.

0:16:32 > 0:16:37- So that's not you outside 10 Downing Street?- I tell you what it was. I didn't want to mention anything.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40You know the Children In Need Big Build in Liverpool?

0:16:40 > 0:16:42Yes, I've still got the scar.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Well, they rang me up and said we'd like to honour you all

0:16:45 > 0:16:48and bring you to Number Ten Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister

0:16:48 > 0:16:51and his wife to say thank you for all your hard work.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- That was nice of them. All of us? - We're on a job, so...

0:16:54 > 0:16:58I said, "We can't all go." So they said, "Well, can you just make it?" So I went, "Yes, all right."

0:16:58 > 0:17:03So we're here grafting and you're up there on our behalf accepting thank you

0:17:03 > 0:17:07for all the hard work we done for Children In Need in Liverpool?

0:17:07 > 0:17:08I was very generous in my speech.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12I tell you what, I've known you a lot of years. That's naughty.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13- That's generous of me.- Naughty.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16You wouldn't have wanted to go to Number Ten, would you, Bill?

0:17:16 > 0:17:20I've been there and done that with Maggie Thatcher when she was in charge.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24But I think it's a great compliment, going to Number Ten.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27See, he appreciates me going to Number Ten on your behalf.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31You just made it sound like it's a compliment that he's gone

0:17:31 > 0:17:33to accept the award on our behalf.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37One of us had to go and the only one that doesn't do any work is Nick.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40- That's not what I meant.- He has got a... No, fair play, Bill.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44No, hang on.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49Charlie's design is a work of art, worthy of an old master.

0:17:49 > 0:17:54But to turn it into a reality, we've got to put in some serious hard graft first.

0:17:56 > 0:18:01Thankfully, some genius has come up with a useful invention to do the tricky bit for us.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05Modern technology. Health and safety. Genie lift.

0:18:05 > 0:18:11You get that lift in and the lift winds the steel up to our desired height

0:18:11 > 0:18:15and we wheel it back and plonk it in place.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Brilliant! It takes the weight off your back. Probably ought to measure the gap first though.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Have we got enough room?

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Time to bring in the muscle. Or Charlie.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Is that the best chisel we've got?

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Come on!

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Come on!

0:18:43 > 0:18:46- Mr da Vinci, would you like a cup of tea?- I would love a tea, mate.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Cup of tea for Leonardo da Vinci, please!

0:18:54 > 0:18:56That's fine. Right.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02The beam is in, as you can see. So that's great now.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05We can start dropping the load on to it.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09It will now hold the middle of the house up, which is very exciting,

0:19:09 > 0:19:12because you need the middle of the house held up.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Otherwise it would fall down, wouldn't it?

0:19:17 > 0:19:19We've only been here for one day,

0:19:19 > 0:19:23but already the house looks like it's gone 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25It would have taken Wayne years to get to this point.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29What's the most difficult thing

0:19:29 > 0:19:33about being in the situation you're in with the difficulties that the children have?

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Normal day things like just going to the shop.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39It would probably need two of you to take him.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43If he doesn't want to go anywhere, he won't go.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45Stuff like that.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48I have to literally put him over my shoulder

0:19:48 > 0:19:51to get him back in the house and stuff like that.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53People say, "I don't know how you do it."

0:19:53 > 0:19:58But everybody that has kids, if they're your own,

0:19:58 > 0:20:00you deal with it, don't you?

0:20:00 > 0:20:05So you can't do those normal things that you expect to do with your son?

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Definitely. I go to the football and watch the football

0:20:08 > 0:20:11and my mates have got their kids there.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14I don't ever show it, but...

0:20:16 > 0:20:21..it's hard, knowing that I'll never be able to take my son.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23So how do you not fold up?

0:20:23 > 0:20:27How do you manage the stress, because there's a lot of it?

0:20:27 > 0:20:34You've never seen such a loving kid with me and Joanne as him.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38You've seen what is normal, but normal kids,

0:20:38 > 0:20:42I've never seen them as loving as he can be.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45So for all the difficulties that you face every day,

0:20:45 > 0:20:48you get more back than you might do...

0:20:50 > 0:20:52I love him to bits. I'd never change him.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56I'd like another kid exactly the same as him

0:20:56 > 0:20:58to do the normal things, but I wouldn't change Jack.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00I love him to bits.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07With the house finished, Wayne will be able to start

0:21:07 > 0:21:10reclaiming his life, spending more time with the whole family

0:21:10 > 0:21:14and banishing the ghosts of a project he just couldn't finish alone.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Back on site, things aren't exactly harmonious.

0:21:19 > 0:21:24Builders and designers don't always play well together.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27It should have been done yesterday and he missed the boat.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31It's like turning up to a ferry port and there's the ferry 100 yards out, going, you've missed it.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33So get over it.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36He's asking the ferry to turn round and come back to pick him up.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40And we're the captain of the ship saying, "No, we're not going to do it."

0:21:40 > 0:21:41That's exactly it. It's too late.

0:21:41 > 0:21:45We are going to go backwards in a minute. We can't afford to.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47I don't know. They were pretty unhappy about it.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51It has been discussed from the very first moment of the build

0:21:51 > 0:21:55and to be honest, it is about trying to make the spaces feel as one

0:21:55 > 0:21:58and not feel like an extension has been bolted on to the site.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Also, if it's taller, it won't feel as tight.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04We made that tight in there to make the bedroom as big as possible.

0:22:04 > 0:22:10When it's done, they're going to be like, it was the right decision. But they're still in a mood about it!

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- He can fit under it perfectly well. - He's fine.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17- I can fit under it perfectly well. - Just.

0:22:17 > 0:22:23You can go under it perfectly well, so you are fine too. So what's the problem?

0:22:23 > 0:22:27- It's very low.- We're just about to start boarding the ceiling.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31If we do that, then this isn't going to be done until some time tomorrow.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35So it has a knock-on effect. That's what I'm trying to say.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38- How many hours' work are we talking about?- Three hours' work.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41- Have we got two blokes?- As long as they don't get in anybody's way

0:22:41 > 0:22:43and it doesn't hold anybody else up.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47But if we can't get someone to do it quickly...

0:22:47 > 0:22:49- I accept that.- Yes?- Yes.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53'Sometimes I feel like a UN peacekeeper in this job.'

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Do you think it would be possible to get the head out above the door

0:22:56 > 0:23:00in three hours tonight and have it finished, lintels in.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Is it possible to do with?- Yes. - Can you do it?- Yes.- Thank you.

0:23:03 > 0:23:08Charlie will help you. He will carry for you.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10I've been trying to get people to do it...

0:23:10 > 0:23:14- I've offered to do it all afternoon. - Right, shut this. That's it.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19- Cheers, Chris.- You wanted it done, Charlie. No slacking.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22- Many hands make light work.- Sir.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29One of the young Jack's big difficulties is learning to use the toilet.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Having one downstairs will make a huge difference,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36but we're having to lower the floor to get the plumbing in.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40Nice job. I like this sort of work. Proper work this, digging.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44I was reared on this sort of work. What my dad used to do.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47He taught me everything I know, my dad. Everything.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Didn't do nothing at school. No qualifications.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54Didn't take any exams. I'm not an academic at all.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56I left school and he's building a house.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00My dad said, "Come and work with me for two weeks."

0:24:00 > 0:24:03That was in 1986. Still here.

0:24:03 > 0:24:08So I didn't really choose this vocation. It chose me.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Who was that mucky git?

0:24:10 > 0:24:13You can guess, if you like.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17It turns out a university education and good manners don't necessarily go hand-in-hand!

0:24:17 > 0:24:20One, two, three.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24It's nice to see the intellectual on the team getting a few honest blisters.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27They're not going to do it again for 50 years, so we may as well get it right.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Because we're putting the kids over there,

0:24:30 > 0:24:32we want it to feel like it's part of the main house

0:24:32 > 0:24:34so I think it is important.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36- It's not been that hard, has it?- No.

0:24:36 > 0:24:40No, not really. It's just Mark making a big song and dance out of it.

0:24:40 > 0:24:45I'm glad I came up with that idea. I'll have a tea, please.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48# Stand up, hands up Don't sit down. #

0:24:48 > 0:24:51- What are your names?- My name is Del.- Del. And?- My name is Kel.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54- So you're putting all the plumbing in for us?- We have, yes.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56That's very kind of you.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59We live locally ourselves and once we heard about it,

0:24:59 > 0:25:02it was a no-brainer really, to get involved.

0:25:02 > 0:25:06- How are you finding the site so far? - A bit chaotic, but otherwise OK.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Considering how many people there are in a square foot,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12nobody has really got in anybody else's way.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15It's quite something, isn't it? And also, nobody has lost their temper.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Not yet! It's only a couple of days in!

0:25:18 > 0:25:23With the mood so good and so many problems appearing to be resolved,

0:25:23 > 0:25:26I felt it was time I could slip away.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Katie is more than just a big sister to Ginny and Jack.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32She's a carer too, giving her mum and Wayne vital support.

0:25:32 > 0:25:37But that means trips out with friends like this one have been few and far between.

0:25:38 > 0:25:43She knows better than anyone the strains the build has put on the family.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47It's something really which hasn't just affected one,

0:25:47 > 0:25:50it has put a lot of stress and strain on the pair of them.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54You can tell it has. You can really tell it's got them down.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58My mum is not the same person any more. You know, she's not.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02So you think if we get the house working properly, your mum,

0:26:02 > 0:26:05- like you know her... - Will come back again.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08- Do you think?- Yes. I think so. I definitely think so.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11So if you could wave a magic wand and the house is done,

0:26:11 > 0:26:13what would the house be like?

0:26:13 > 0:26:15I think it would just be magic,

0:26:15 > 0:26:17because things will just be wonderful.

0:26:17 > 0:26:23You know, for Mum and Wayne to have that homely feeling.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Not to walk through that door and see cables hanging

0:26:26 > 0:26:28and plaster off the walls.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31It would be out of this world. It would just be magic.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35- You must be pretty excited about when we finish, then?- I am, yes.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37- Do you think your mum will cry?- Yes.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40- Do you think Wayne will cry?- Yes. - Do you think so?- Yes. We all will.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43- He's never going to live that down at work, is he?- No.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- If he turns up back at work having had a cry on telly.- Yes.

0:26:47 > 0:26:48No, it will be lovely.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Move your sofa, there's a car coming.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05Move your sofa back. That's it. Over there. Sit down.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07# There was a cold wind blowing

0:27:07 > 0:27:10# From the north and to the south. #

0:27:10 > 0:27:15With no central heating, the family must have dreaded cold winter mornings like this one.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17They're not the only ones.

0:27:17 > 0:27:23It starts frosting tonight and it really gets cold Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27Friday looks OK because it's up to six degrees.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- It doesn't get warm enough. It's not going to defrost the ground.- No.

0:27:30 > 0:27:36So ideally, we could do with getting the boxes in and the plants in by tomorrow afternoon.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39You're effectively saying, we have to finish the garden in two days.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42If that weather stays the same as it is.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45It's getting the turf down in two days that's the issue.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48We can possibly do a few other things around it.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51We've had no luck. I have to go and find out where we are with the plants.

0:27:51 > 0:27:56- We need some trees and we need some plants. Otherwise, it's not going to look any good.- No.

0:27:56 > 0:28:01Get on with it, then! With the pressure on, Charlie's plans for the water feature have changed too.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05Gone is the hand pump, in is a rubbish looking bucket, really.

0:28:06 > 0:28:09So what I'm thinking is that this is a raised box.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12It's about 350 high, which takes you just over the top of that.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15Then we'll put pebbles in the bottom of it

0:28:15 > 0:28:18and a little pump and they can fill it from the outdoor tap

0:28:18 > 0:28:22and I think we might paint it, like a really bright colour.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25- It'll be lovely. - Like a yellow or red, or something.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28- It's just so he can sit and play in it.- Let's go and do it then.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31- Camembert, are you happy with that? - I'm happy with that.- Lovely.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34It's a bucket! It's going to look like a bucket!

0:28:34 > 0:28:38What we're trying to give Jack is some outside space that's safe and familiar

0:28:38 > 0:28:40and where Wayne and Joanne can keep an eye on him easily.

0:28:40 > 0:28:44His condition means he needs constant round-the-clock care.

0:28:44 > 0:28:49Joanne's only time off comes when Jack is at a local special needs school.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52Your uncle and brother have been at the house

0:28:52 > 0:28:56- and they've been saying that you feel you don't deserve this. - Yes. It's weird.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58- Why?- I don't know.

0:28:58 > 0:29:03We started the work and thought we were going to finish it

0:29:03 > 0:29:06and you just feel awful that you haven't been able to finish it.

0:29:06 > 0:29:10If it hadn't have been for you lot, I don't know what I'd have done.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14It's hard enough, I don't like that word "normal", because everybody is different,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16but it's hard enough with children.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20But when your child has sensory problems and things like that,

0:29:20 > 0:29:25even if somebody had to use a drill or if Wayne had to drill, you've always got to take him out.

0:29:25 > 0:29:29Half way down the road, someone could just disturb Jack

0:29:29 > 0:29:34so his anxiety levels and stress levels are always peaking.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37It takes him a long while to settle.

0:29:37 > 0:29:43- Have you been dreaming about the house being fixed up? Can you imagine what we've done to it?- No.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45It will just be nice to not walk in...

0:29:45 > 0:29:48When I used to walk in the house,

0:29:48 > 0:29:51I used to just feel that low all of a sudden.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54Perhaps I'd had a bit of a rough day or a morning with Jack,

0:29:54 > 0:29:58getting him to school, and then coming back.

0:29:58 > 0:30:04Nine times out of ten, Jack didn't want to come back in the house because it was just... Just a mess.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09You keep saying, "It'll be done soon, Jack. It will be done soon, Jack."

0:30:09 > 0:30:12But you know deep down in your heart of hearts

0:30:12 > 0:30:15it's going to take a hell of a long time to get it straight.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19- Maybe Jack will be calmer if he has his own space.- I think so.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21And it will be somewhere for him to retreat to

0:30:21 > 0:30:24if he wants a bit of time out himself.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26So how does life change?

0:30:26 > 0:30:29It'll be so much easier. The pressure would be off.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31I can't believe it, Nick, honestly.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34You're sitting here next to me now and I still can't believe it!

0:30:34 > 0:30:38- You'll have to believe it when you walk in. I think it's going to be quite emotional.- Yes.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41But I will just be glad to be settled and back home,

0:30:41 > 0:30:43with everything back to normal.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48As normal as they can be.

0:30:49 > 0:30:50Nearer normal.

0:30:52 > 0:30:53It's a dream.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00We can't make all the other difficulties that you face any better,

0:31:00 > 0:31:04but we can certainly give you a better environment in which to face them.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06That would be lovely.

0:31:13 > 0:31:18Back on site, things are going at a million miles an hour.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20But there's always time for little good grace.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Can I just, on behalf of myself, commend you on this decision

0:31:25 > 0:31:30to higher this up because I was totally disagreeing with everyone yesterday quietly

0:31:30 > 0:31:35and I think it has just finished this whole open space off.

0:31:35 > 0:31:39Raising it up by 350 mil might not sound like a lot.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42That much, Charlie's pushed it up.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46It's a wonderful thing.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50- Thank you. I commend you on behalf of me.- Thank you very much, mate.

0:31:50 > 0:31:51That's brilliant.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53That's unbelievable!

0:31:53 > 0:31:58I think that's the first time I've ever seen Chris admit he was wrong.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02- This is your design, isn't it? This front garden.- Yes.

0:32:02 > 0:32:07- You've got a load of tarmac up here. - Loads of it. Loads of tarmac.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Tarmac and gravel and concrete kerbstones.

0:32:10 > 0:32:15If I had my way, up the driveway, I'm going to put double yellow lines up there.

0:32:16 > 0:32:21- Have double yellow lines up the driveway.- Cats eyes!- Cats eyes!

0:32:21 > 0:32:25- Cats eyes up the middle.- There's going to be no messing around.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28There's going to be nothing organic, flowery or fruity about it.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30They can park their car and let the rain run off.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33Can I just mention, in amongst your garden talk,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35there's a building needs doing.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38Remember? It's the big thing in between the front and the back garden

0:32:38 > 0:32:41that you were arguing about.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45You wouldn't catch our plasterers messing about with plants and raised flowerbeds.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47No. These are men on a mission.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50Absolutely immense push, lads. This is phenomenal.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54It can all be drying out, we can get the kitchen in, we can get the floors down.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Happy days. Brilliant. Thank you, guys.

0:32:56 > 0:33:01- Thanks for having us.- But you have left little bit around the corner!

0:33:03 > 0:33:07# I don't care about the soaps No, I don't care about the soaps

0:33:08 > 0:33:12# Though I must feel like I'm in an Eastenders episode. #

0:33:12 > 0:33:16To the untrained eye, it would look like we haven't done a great deal in here.

0:33:16 > 0:33:21But this is all prepped ready for plastering tomorrow and that will mean in just three days,

0:33:21 > 0:33:24the whole of the upstairs will be plastered.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26Downstairs is flying along as well.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29Another thing, and don't tell Charlie I said this, but he's right.

0:33:29 > 0:33:34This does look like a very big landing, which means it feels like a big house, even if it isn't.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36Very nice.

0:33:39 > 0:33:44The ground is so hard it won't defrost, so we're going to have to defrost it with a big burner.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48If the ground is like that, what about the poor old plants?

0:33:52 > 0:33:54Permafrost has just set in.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58We've got at least three inches on the top which is absolutely rock solid.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Feel free to try it with the pick.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09That is ridiculous!

0:34:09 > 0:34:14It's difficult to show you on screen just how cold it is, but it's freezing.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17The grass won't take root on frozen soil so the flamethrower

0:34:17 > 0:34:21is our only hope if we're going to get this garden done in time.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25If Mark's feeling inadequate, he's certainly not showing it.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27This is what you call gardening. I'm telling you.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30None of this poncing around with snippers and stuff.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32Get one of these in your garden.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35The boys have got the clear all this back today for the path.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38What we're trying to do is make a practical space in the front of the house

0:34:38 > 0:34:43so they can move Jack around and get him in and out of the house without hurting himself.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45Really, that's what it's about.

0:34:46 > 0:34:50They've all been laughing at me because I wanted this all Tarmaced

0:34:50 > 0:34:53but I tell you what, as far as I'm concerned, it's a work of art.

0:34:53 > 0:34:57- Definitely.- It's a work of art. - That's why they've sent us.- Exactly.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59The A-Team!

0:34:59 > 0:35:02I think Mark might be getting into this design thing.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05Three, two...

0:35:05 > 0:35:09Will it fit? Will it fit?

0:35:09 > 0:35:13Hooray! Look at that there! Don't you dare walk on that.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16If you're coming out here, clean your feet.

0:35:16 > 0:35:21You know when they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, it was Mark that won the contract!

0:35:21 > 0:35:25What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

0:35:26 > 0:35:28You can wash your hands in a bison!

0:35:28 > 0:35:31Yes, jokes and building. All you have to do is feed him.

0:35:31 > 0:35:36Keep your hands and feet away from his mouth when he's eating and you'll be perfectly safe.

0:35:36 > 0:35:41- Oh look, there's a kitchen going in. - What have you got for us, Pete? - Nice cream kitchen. Nice and light.

0:35:41 > 0:35:46- It's going to bring a lot of light. It's a proper cook's kitchen. - The clock is ticking.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49- Thank you very much.- See you later. - All right. Nice one.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59What do you think? It's beautiful isn't it?

0:35:59 > 0:36:02- He's overdone the tarmac a bit.- What? - You've overdone the tarmac a bit.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05I'd ignore him saying that you've overdone it.

0:36:05 > 0:36:10I think what you've done is provide a very reasonable environment for them to put their cars.

0:36:10 > 0:36:13- From a disabled point of view... - What's that?

0:36:13 > 0:36:18- What is it?- Insulation. - That's our insulation?

0:36:18 > 0:36:22- What have you got on board? - Insulation.- Insulation? For here?

0:36:22 > 0:36:25- The whole lorryload? - The whole lorryload.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28- Who's overdone it then? - So let me just check.

0:36:28 > 0:36:32You think he might have overdone the tarmac a little bit?!

0:36:34 > 0:36:37And that is the amount of insulation you've ordered for the house?!

0:36:37 > 0:36:41Luckily for you, I'm currently thinking about insulating my house at home!

0:36:41 > 0:36:44I might be able to help you out here.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48Now you mention it, I might do my house as well while I'm at it!

0:36:48 > 0:36:52You can't be serious. How many bales have you got on there?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54Oh, my God!

0:36:56 > 0:36:58- I know!- There's more on that side. - Yes.

0:36:58 > 0:37:03On the upside, at least it's only come from Stourbridge up the road.

0:37:03 > 0:37:04Poland.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12I think our eco-warrior needs to check his maths.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Its 2.6 metres by five metres

0:37:15 > 0:37:18so we need 40 square metres, minus the six square metres.

0:37:18 > 0:37:2234 metres of the hemp stuff, which is 11 bales.

0:37:22 > 0:37:28That is 6.5 by three, which is 19.5, times two, which is 39.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Divided by a half, which is about 80.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34Plus the 12, which is 92.

0:37:34 > 0:37:40So that's about four of the big bales and 11 bales of the hemp.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42If you'd like to take part in "Dodgy Maths Weekly",

0:37:42 > 0:37:47write in to the BBC and you can take part in next week's challenge.

0:37:47 > 0:37:52I know it seems insane, but it isn't. Can we get it off?

0:37:52 > 0:37:57'It is insane! It's insane! By anybody's standards, it's insane!'

0:37:59 > 0:38:04With tonnes of insulation lining the loft, a brand spanking new boiler and ten powerful radiators,

0:38:04 > 0:38:08this house is going to be seriously toasty.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11- Shall we have a quick tea break? - But not quite yet.

0:38:11 > 0:38:16We're emptying the site so that the boys can fill the central heating system up and listen for leaks.

0:38:18 > 0:38:22(You see, there's more than 300 metres of piping

0:38:22 > 0:38:26(running through this place and it only takes one leak to sink the whole ship.)

0:38:29 > 0:38:32Hold on, that doesn't look right.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35You can see a mark on the ceiling below so we've got a rough idea,

0:38:35 > 0:38:38because only a few of us have done the plumbing,

0:38:38 > 0:38:40so we know where we put all our pipework.

0:38:40 > 0:38:44There's only a certain amount of pipework that could be leaking.

0:38:44 > 0:38:46It's under the floor somewhere.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49All the floors are laid and all the carpets are laid down.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51I sniff disaster!

0:38:54 > 0:38:58Unfortunately, a dramatic problem calls for a dramatic solution.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01In a way, plumbing, if you've got a leak, you can see it.

0:39:01 > 0:39:05But electrics, if it's not running there, you don't know where it's broken.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08True, Billy, but normally when there's an issue with the electrics,

0:39:08 > 0:39:12we just work backwards from where you last were!

0:39:12 > 0:39:16It's best to pressurise the system, find out exactly where it's coming from

0:39:16 > 0:39:19and then drain the system quickly.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22- No-one's used the toilet, have they? - Oh, Christopher!

0:39:22 > 0:39:26We've got two teams of plumbers working on this and neither of them

0:39:26 > 0:39:29will want to be responsible for it, will they?

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- No.- Your honour, as a plumber is that your joints are right.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35- Without a doubt. - So what is it?- Can you see anything?

0:39:36 > 0:39:40- What is it?- A nail through the pipe.

0:39:40 > 0:39:42Skirting board nail through the pipe!

0:39:42 > 0:39:45- So it was nothing to do with the plumbers then?- No.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48- The plumbers' honour is intact. - See how happy he is about that?

0:39:48 > 0:39:51Not now, cos we've got to fix it.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00We've been doing these DIY SOS Big Builds for two years now

0:40:00 > 0:40:03and it never fails to amaze me how these things come together.

0:40:03 > 0:40:05But it's a fairly straightforward formula.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08Essentially, what you need is an ocean of goodwill

0:40:08 > 0:40:11and people who are prepared to work themselves to a standstill

0:40:11 > 0:40:13for ten days for no financial reward.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17Just for knowing that they've done something good for people who really deserve it.

0:40:17 > 0:40:22We will finish this over the next 24 hours, because we've got amazing people working on it.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36I never thought I'd say this, but hooray, it's raining!

0:40:36 > 0:40:40No, I'm not mad. It means the ground has finally started to thaw out

0:40:40 > 0:40:42and we can mix in some fresh topsoil.

0:40:42 > 0:40:47So how is it going to go? Have we got enough time left because this is the last run-in?

0:40:47 > 0:40:51- Have we got time to tidy this garden?- We've got a great plan. I reckon we're looking good.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54We should be hitting the turf about 2.00pm or 3.00pm,

0:40:54 > 0:40:58so we'll have the last couple of hours of daylight to put that down

0:40:58 > 0:41:01- and get it all flat.- All right. I'll leave you to it.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14Out front, Mark's driveway is a vision in black.

0:41:14 > 0:41:18- You must be very proud.- Proud? It's like I've had twins!

0:41:18 > 0:41:20That's the level of pride.

0:41:20 > 0:41:23They're a good looking bunch as well, aren't they?

0:41:23 > 0:41:26- They are.- Have you ever thought of doing a calendar, you guys?

0:41:29 > 0:41:32We tried a DIY SOS calendar once.

0:41:32 > 0:41:36Let's just say they weren't exactly bestsellers.

0:41:36 > 0:41:37It's a work of art.

0:41:39 > 0:41:43Our Black Country builders have been nothing less than immense.

0:41:43 > 0:41:47Now it's just the spit, polish and finishing touches to go.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50- It's going to look good, isn't it? - It's going to look great.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53- It's quite a change around. - I can't wait to see it on the reveal.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56I can't believe the difference from the first day,

0:41:56 > 0:41:59when you came in and saw the state that everything was in.

0:41:59 > 0:42:03You turned up two days before you put the carpets down to take measurements

0:42:03 > 0:42:06- and I could see you thinking... - This isn't going to be ready. It's amazing.

0:42:06 > 0:42:09It's amazing how they've managed to do it in the time.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13And incredibly, (DUDLEY ACCENT) done it in time we have.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22Just nine days ago, we arrived

0:42:22 > 0:42:26to find a family, not only battling Fragile X syndrome, but living

0:42:26 > 0:42:29in a dark, cold and cramped building site.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31With no money left, and no way out,

0:42:31 > 0:42:35Wayne and Joanne were exhausted and desperate for help.

0:42:35 > 0:42:40By trying to make it better for the kiddies, it seems as if we've made it worse.

0:42:40 > 0:42:44Jack...he doesn't really want to come home.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48It's probably my fault as well, because I couldn't finish it myself.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52And, I wish I could.

0:42:54 > 0:42:55When we asked the question,

0:42:55 > 0:42:58an army of local trades put their hands up,

0:42:58 > 0:43:00donating over 4,000 man-hours

0:43:00 > 0:43:04to give the family a home they'd want to come back to.

0:43:10 > 0:43:15Together, we've demolished the old dark and cluttered kitchen.

0:43:15 > 0:43:16Knocking through into the extension,

0:43:16 > 0:43:20to create a huge open-plan living space.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23The large family dining area

0:43:23 > 0:43:26leads into an open and light, modern kitchen,

0:43:26 > 0:43:28complete with the appliances

0:43:28 > 0:43:30and surface areas they were so lacking.

0:43:33 > 0:43:35The slate-floored utility room

0:43:35 > 0:43:37is equipped with plenty of storage space

0:43:37 > 0:43:40and a downstairs toilet will come in useful

0:43:40 > 0:43:42when Jack starts potty training again.

0:43:44 > 0:43:47Upstairs, we've taken out the old bathroom

0:43:47 > 0:43:48to create a huge landing area

0:43:48 > 0:43:51that gives the whole space a central focus

0:43:51 > 0:43:54and I've got to admit, makes the house feel massive!

0:43:57 > 0:43:58With Charlie's raised lintel,

0:43:58 > 0:44:01the extension now feels part of the old house

0:44:01 > 0:44:04and leads to two bedrooms, giving Jack and Ginny

0:44:04 > 0:44:08the separate spaces they need to have a good night's sleep

0:44:08 > 0:44:11and develop at their own rates.

0:44:11 > 0:44:13After years of living in the smallest room,

0:44:13 > 0:44:17Katie finally has the large and luxurious adult space she so deserves.

0:44:17 > 0:44:20Somewhere she can retreat to and make her own.

0:44:22 > 0:44:24There's a new master bathroom,

0:44:24 > 0:44:27complete with waterfall taps that should keep Jack happy.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33And Joanne and Wayne have a new plush bedroom,

0:44:33 > 0:44:38transformed from the cramped room Jack and Ginny once shared.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41We've even managed to fit in an ensuite bathroom,

0:44:41 > 0:44:44making the morning and evening ritual much easier

0:44:44 > 0:44:45for all five of them.

0:44:46 > 0:44:49Finally, the back garden has been transformed

0:44:49 > 0:44:51from the mud pit it once was,

0:44:51 > 0:44:53into a stunning low-maintenance garden,

0:44:53 > 0:44:57where the kids can safely burn off some energy.

0:44:57 > 0:44:59There's a large decked area

0:44:59 > 0:45:02and a safe water feature that Jack can play with

0:45:02 > 0:45:04in plain sight from the kitchen.

0:45:04 > 0:45:07Giving him a sense of, what was it again?

0:45:07 > 0:45:09Agency?

0:45:11 > 0:45:1416 months after they started,

0:45:14 > 0:45:16the build is finally finished.

0:45:16 > 0:45:19Wayne can now reclaim his life with Joanne and the children

0:45:19 > 0:45:21in a home they'll want to come back to.

0:45:21 > 0:45:25Joanne's brother Andy knows better than anyone

0:45:25 > 0:45:28how much this will mean to them.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31My sister's very, very emotional.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33So, if I can just pre-warn Worcester and Hereford,

0:45:33 > 0:45:36you're going to be flooded.

0:45:36 > 0:45:39Well before the bad weather kicks in, because she...honestly.

0:45:39 > 0:45:41When she opens that door, when it's all done,

0:45:41 > 0:45:44she walks into there, she'll cry.

0:45:44 > 0:45:48This is going to be immense for her. It really is going to be immense.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54What was wrong with your house?

0:45:54 > 0:45:56It was awful.
