0:00:02 > 0:00:06Last year, Paul and Sarah decided to extend their house

0:00:06 > 0:00:11so their children, Jess and Josh could both have a room of their own.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13But the week after they dug the foundations,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Josh started to complain of stomach pains.

0:00:16 > 0:00:21I remember walking up the road with him and saying, "Come on, Josh. There's nothing wrong with you."

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Typical dad. A week later he was laying in a bed, desperately ill.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Right up until that last moment,

0:00:27 > 0:00:31I never suspected that it would be cancer.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Cancer so severe that Josh needed a liver transplant

0:00:35 > 0:00:38and now he's going to need a lot of care for the rest of his life.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40You're helpless.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44If you could take the pain away from him... It's just horrible.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48If you could make everything better, what would be the first thing on your list?

0:00:48 > 0:00:52To make our family normal again.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55And just be happy.

0:00:55 > 0:01:02'And to do that, this house needs to become a home that will help the family face the future together.'

0:01:02 > 0:01:07- What makes you happy?- Going home. - Going home makes you happy?

0:01:07 > 0:01:12Home is so important. I want them to feel safe and loved and warm.

0:01:16 > 0:01:21And that's where we come in. With the support of local trades, we're going to try

0:01:21 > 0:01:26and give this family the space they need to help Josh get better.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28We've got just nine days to get the job done.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31We need an army of builders who know what they're doing.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34That's handy. I'm glad you're here.

0:01:34 > 0:01:39- Can you tell us where we can find an army of builders who know what they're doing?- ALL: No!

0:01:39 > 0:01:41I guess we'll have to make do with this lot.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44This is DIY SOS, The Big Build.

0:01:54 > 0:02:01Last spring, Paul and Sarah started to extend their cramped bungalow in Duxford near Cambridge.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Their son Josh was growing up fast.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06It seems such a long time ago now.

0:02:06 > 0:02:12He had football tournaments, and I just thought to myself,

0:02:12 > 0:02:15"He's just lost his little spark."

0:02:15 > 0:02:20The next week, he was sent home from school poorly,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24with just a tummy ache and it was just a very, very gradual decline

0:02:24 > 0:02:31until that last week when his pain was just uncontrollable.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Ultrasound tests revealed a lump in Josh's liver.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38The doctor never said it will be all right. Don't worry.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43And I know that's.... I know the drill.

0:02:43 > 0:02:50Sarah knew the drill because she's an oncology nurse, working with cancer patients every day.

0:02:52 > 0:02:59Josh was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a very rare and aggressive form of liver cancer.

0:02:59 > 0:03:06Three painful sessions of chemotherapy were followed by a successful liver transplant.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12But Josh's condition still has a huge impact on his life.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Josh can't do anything really.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20So he just stays in bed and watches TV.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24A horrible moment. We were with some friends of ours and he had a pump on

0:03:24 > 0:03:28and a little rucksack and he has his feed that was 24 hours a day,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31and they've got one of these trampolines in their back garden

0:03:31 > 0:03:37and his three little friends were jumping around in there and there was Josh sat on the side. Hard.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Josh's life has changed beyond recognition,

0:03:41 > 0:03:45putting huge demands on the family's small and cramped bungalow.

0:03:45 > 0:03:50We have to give him about 12 drugs a day, so his body accepts his liver.

0:03:50 > 0:03:55But he's on other drugs as well to help him because his immune system is suppressed,

0:03:55 > 0:03:59he is at risk of infection, so we give him anti-viral drugs,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03just to hopefully safeguard him against any infection.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08All right Josh, take your medicines, darling?

0:04:08 > 0:04:12'It's the responsibility, it's all on my shoulders.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16'And because I'm a nurse, it is a control thing as well.'

0:04:17 > 0:04:22But then you shouldn't be doing that with your son. Your own son. It's really hard.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27With no room in the house, those drugs have got to go somewhere.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32In here we've got all his nutrient milk,

0:04:32 > 0:04:37they call it, which is basically pumped into his stomach via a line.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Its job is to maintain his weight.

0:04:40 > 0:04:46As well as needing more space to store Josh's medicines, the family urgently need another bedroom.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51Jess and Josh have always shared a room, but now that puts Josh at greater risk of picking up

0:04:51 > 0:04:55an infection that could make him seriously ill.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I don't want to be poorly because I don't...

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Cos it's harder to share a room when Josh's poorly.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06In the night, his pump beeps when I try to get to sleep.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10But if I've got a cold or something, I can't go near Josh.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13It's really hard.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16By any measure, this family has been through the mill.

0:05:16 > 0:05:22We're going to try and give them a home which will help them cope with whatever comes next.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26What about you two? Let's find out about a bit out about you first.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Jessica, what sort of things do you do in your spare time?

0:05:29 > 0:05:34- I like drawing.- Are you a member of any clubs or anything?- Cubs.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38You're in the Cubs? What about you?

0:05:38 > 0:05:41You're a bit busy, going backwards and forwards to the hospital.

0:05:41 > 0:05:47- I like sports.- What's your favourite sport?- Anything with a ball.- OK.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52- Let's find out what you want. What do you need?- Storage. Josh's medicines and his equipment

0:05:52 > 0:05:57take up most of the kitchen and Josh and Jessica can't share a bedroom

0:05:57 > 0:06:01because of Josh's condition anyway, but she's going to be ten next year

0:06:01 > 0:06:06so somewhere for her to just go and gather her thoughts.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10It strikes me that you're sort of getting to the end of your tether a little bit.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12I am. I am.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18I'm tired. I just want to be their mum.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23And it's been really hard.

0:06:23 > 0:06:28I can see how it would get to you as well. We'll try and give you the best possible house that we can.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32There's nothing to pack now because it's an empty house.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36- Where is it all?- At the dump. - At the dump?!

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- THEY LAUGH - You're not supposed to say that!

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Kids, you can't trust them to come up with the right story, can you?

0:06:44 > 0:06:48So it's goodbye to the family, hello, trades people.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52It's freezing cold and it's nearly the shortest day of the year.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55But the support were getting is amazing.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Who's in charge? THEY LAUGH

0:07:00 > 0:07:05So Billy's here and so is the rest of the team, eventually.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- What kind you call this? - Ten o'clock.- Quarter two.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- What?- Quarter to your supposed to be here.- No. Ten o'clock.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16I said I'd probably be early so try and make it.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20As long as we're taking the casual attitude towards this job.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25- I called, the director said ten o'clock.- Don't you worry about it. - I'm not worried about it.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Get out of the van.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Honestly, I hope they show our new designer a little more respect.

0:07:36 > 0:07:41Gabrielle Blackman has worked on many big builds, collaborating with the other designers.

0:07:41 > 0:07:47This week, she steps into the spotlight. Gabrielle's portfolio contains some incredible work.

0:07:47 > 0:07:53If your yacht needs a revamp like this, she's your woman, but she is just as good at designing homes

0:07:53 > 0:07:56that really work for the people that live in them.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00It's got to be what they want because there's no point

0:08:00 > 0:08:04in all of these lovely trades doing all this work and then me putting something stupid

0:08:04 > 0:08:07and controversial in that they won't like.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11The only thing we don't want is white, glossy minimalist,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14is not them at all. They want a cosy family home.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Why do you think they don't want white glossy?

0:08:17 > 0:08:20We don't want anything to do with hospital in this house.

0:08:20 > 0:08:26I just want it to be a cosy home and nothing that feels clinical or cold.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30- We're not going to have any of that. - That's a very good point.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34I was just about to explain that we call Gabrielle "Gabriel",

0:08:34 > 0:08:39- when you would think it would be "Gabri-elle".- Gabi is fine.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I've even got it written on my hat. I've given up now.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Why did your parents call you "Gabriel" rather than "Gabri-elle"?

0:08:46 > 0:08:52- I don't know. It's cos... Yeah, an angel thing.- Gabriel the Angel?

0:08:52 > 0:08:55She's a little angel.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Aw! Here's Gabrielle's heavenly plan. At the front of the house,

0:08:59 > 0:09:03a new wall will give Jess that much-needed room of her own.

0:09:03 > 0:09:08That will make the living room smaller, so we're moving another wall to make up for it,

0:09:08 > 0:09:12and adding a window, creating a cosy haven for the family to relax in.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15At the back comes the big change.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19We're adding a kitchen diner where the family can be together.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Where the kitchen was, it will be a utility room

0:09:23 > 0:09:26with lots of storage for all Josh's medical staff.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Finally a small extension to Sarah and Paul's room will add more space

0:09:30 > 0:09:33and an en suite.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39And Gabrielle spoke unto them and said, "Knock those walls down."

0:09:39 > 0:09:42And Lo! It came to pass.

0:09:46 > 0:09:52We've started at breakneck pace but I've always got time to say hello to a fan.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57- New motor, is it?- It's for my wife. She's a big fan of yours, Tony.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Tony?!

0:09:59 > 0:10:00Tony Knowles.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02THEY LAUGH

0:10:02 > 0:10:05That's nice(!) You think you've built a career, eh?

0:10:05 > 0:10:08This pile of wood is the shell of the new extension.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12When I was a lad, extensions took weeks to build. Not any more.

0:10:12 > 0:10:17- How fast is this going to go up and get together? - We hope to finish this today.- Really?

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- Not including the roof bit?- Yes.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24- Including the roof joists where we're cutting into this? - If we get a good run of it, yes.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27As long as we stop interrupting you, basically. All right, fair enough.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Just hours in and were making real progress

0:10:30 > 0:10:35but every chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Oh, here we go.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Let me ask you a question. What's in there?

0:10:38 > 0:10:42That's the bathroom. We're not supposed to go in there.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Who drilled into the wall into the new bathroom and broke the tiles?

0:10:45 > 0:10:50That was so unlucky. I was that far out of being lucky.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- But you weren't. - I weren't, I was unlucky.

0:10:53 > 0:10:58You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs, son.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01It's a hell of an omelette when you're around.

0:11:01 > 0:11:06Thankfully, there's plenty of people on site that do know what they're doing.

0:11:06 > 0:11:1143 on day one alone, all giving us their time, skill and support.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15You can be round the corner and not know what trauma some families go through.

0:11:15 > 0:11:20People are here for a good cause as opposed to earning a living.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24It's hard out there and people have come in. It's like a breath of fresh air.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27It's great.

0:11:27 > 0:11:32Great laugh, good people and it will be great just to see them happy at the end of it.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36Why did you decide to come and join in and help out?

0:11:36 > 0:11:39You could have been somewhere else earning a lot more money.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42I could have been but I found out the little boy had liver cancer.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46I've just finished a course of chemotherapy for cancer.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50- Oh, have you?- I have. So I know how important it is to get help.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53How are you doing now?

0:11:53 > 0:11:58- Yeah, still waiting for the final results but everything's looking good. It's all positive.- Good.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- You understand the need for a clean and tidy home.- Absolutely.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- A safe environment.- I do, yeah.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07- But you're happy to come along and help out.- More than happy. Yeah.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11- Thanks very much.- Wouldn't have it any other way.- Really appreciate it.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14'Aren't people amazing?

0:12:14 > 0:12:17'We've been here a few hours, but already I've noticed something.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22'If you stand on this scaffold long enough, something unusual will fly over.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26'It's probably on its way to land at one of Josh's favourite places,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29'the Imperial War Museum's plane collection.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33'He loves walking around here. Look around, you can see why.'

0:12:33 > 0:12:38I hear you've been back into hospital again. How did it go?

0:12:38 > 0:12:44- I had to have a needle in my leg. - Did you? I bet that's not very nice.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48- No.- How did he manage yesterday?

0:12:48 > 0:12:52He wasn't too bad, but you know that he's really frightened

0:12:52 > 0:12:55because his blood pressure went through the roof.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58They had try and let him calm down a little bit and leave him

0:12:58 > 0:13:02until he could calm down and then they put the needle in there.

0:13:02 > 0:13:06Basically so he can have an injection in his leg

0:13:06 > 0:13:10over the next few days to lift his blood count.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14- How are you feeling now? - Fine.- Fine?- Yes.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17When do you feel unwell then?

0:13:17 > 0:13:25When I've had chemo and sometimes when I've had anti-sickness drugs.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29How does it make you feel?

0:13:29 > 0:13:33A bit tired and worried.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- What makes you happy?- Going home.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Going home makes you happy?

0:13:38 > 0:13:42I suppose you have do spend a long time at the hospital.

0:13:42 > 0:13:48- Yes.- How much do you look forward to going home?- A lot.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52- What part of your house do you like the best?- My bedroom.- Do you?

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- Even though you have to share it?- Yes.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- Would you like to have a bedroom all of your own?- Yes. - Why would that be cool?

0:13:59 > 0:14:05- So I get some peace and I can play with my toys a bit more.- Right.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08I can see how that would work.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12- Anything less than that and we are in trouble?- Yes!

0:14:18 > 0:14:22'Well, we'd better get on with it then. Wow! That really is getting on with it.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26'We all know that when it gets dark, scary things come out to play.'

0:14:26 > 0:14:29There was nothing here this morning.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33This is day one of the job and we actually didn't start building

0:14:33 > 0:14:36until nearly 10:30, 11 o'clock this morning.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39So really, they've put a timber frame extension up,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42two-thirds of the way through the roof.

0:14:42 > 0:14:47The flat roof's gone on over there. I tell you what, this is a seriously good team.

0:14:47 > 0:14:52It's like having a gargoyle on the roof, isn't it?

0:14:52 > 0:14:55So, outside, it's all about what's gone up.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59Inside, it's all about what's come down.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02Most of the walls by the look of it.

0:15:02 > 0:15:08It may seem scary but it's all part of the plan. Well, they say it's all part of the plan(!)

0:15:08 > 0:15:14Ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment, God Save The Queen played on a saw.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18HE PLAYS GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

0:15:26 > 0:15:29HE CONTINUES PLAYING

0:15:37 > 0:15:42Genius! If you think that's good, you should see what he can do with a hammer.

0:15:45 > 0:15:50Day two and the brickies have arrived.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53We're adding a lot of space but most rooms will still be quite small.

0:15:53 > 0:15:59In the lounge, Gabrielle has to find room for a fire, a sofa and one of her pet hates.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03Designers don't really like TVs because they don't look very nice.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07It's not a very attractive thing to have in the sitting room.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11It's so important in this house, particularly for Josh.

0:16:11 > 0:16:14Part of him getting better and recuperating is that he needs

0:16:14 > 0:16:18to be comfortable and I can see him lying on the sofa here,

0:16:18 > 0:16:21watching the TV, and it's really important that all works,

0:16:21 > 0:16:26the room still looks... this lovely, elegant sitting-room that Sarah wants.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28We're just trying to make that happen.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30You need to make it happen fast

0:16:30 > 0:16:33because the plasterers are chomping at the bit.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37We want to chase these door linings up. Get the door linings on.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40And then we've got two rooms we can skim this afternoon.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42We're catching everyone up.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Up on the scaffold, two roofs are about to be made one.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51We're ready to get the roof done,

0:16:51 > 0:16:54trying to get it covered in because it looks fine now,

0:16:54 > 0:16:58but it was raining earlier, so we can't take any chances.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Down below, Jules has solved some problems I don't quite understand.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14He got us out of a large problem there.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20'Aw, that's better.

0:17:20 > 0:17:26'Everyone needs a hug now and again and I mean everyone.'

0:17:26 > 0:17:28You now. Aw!

0:17:29 > 0:17:32It's working for me.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- I feel better now.- Do you feel better?- I feel better now.

0:17:44 > 0:17:49- Ah, lovely. How does that feel? - Yeah, it's nice.- Where's his hand?

0:17:49 > 0:17:51Get off!

0:17:56 > 0:18:01When Josh became ill, Sarah knew that both her children were going to need a lot of support.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07She knew that both her and Paul would be away for months

0:18:07 > 0:18:12while Josh was in hospital, so she asked her three best friends,

0:18:12 > 0:18:17Helen, Lara and Julia to get together and look after Jess.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21She went in to organise mode and said this is what I would like.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25She spoke to all of us individually. Got us all together.

0:18:25 > 0:18:30That's a lot of trust and an amazing friendship, that she could come to you with something so important.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33- I think she knew it wouldn't be an issue.- It wasn't an issue.

0:18:33 > 0:18:37There was no second thought. It was just absolutely fine.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41But it also made us feel that we were doing some good.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45- Something to help.- Something to help. You feel helpless.

0:18:45 > 0:18:50You know that they're in hospital, to know that they're doing something, she could go there

0:18:50 > 0:18:55and not worry about Jessica, because she was OK and she was with us.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59- It helped us too.- When I was talking to her the other day,

0:18:59 > 0:19:05I was watching her and I said, "You're pretty near the end of your tether" and she said, "Yes, I am."

0:19:05 > 0:19:09She stayed with us last week.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14I think she's ready for that end and the end of the chemo

0:19:14 > 0:19:18and just really start looking ahead and just having that family

0:19:18 > 0:19:22back together and protecting them all in the same environment

0:19:22 > 0:19:25and having a home again.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29And what a home it's going to be,

0:19:29 > 0:19:31thanks to the hard work of all these people.

0:19:31 > 0:19:36It makes you feel all warm inside. Perhaps that's why the hugging just won't stop.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43Look at Nigel over there. Safety glasses, obviously, because he's health and safety officer.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47There's another one going on now, look.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52'I was slightly worried about what I've started here.

0:19:52 > 0:19:57'As the sun sets at about 2:45, the timber frame is finished,

0:19:57 > 0:19:59'ready to be felted and tiled tomorrow.'

0:19:59 > 0:20:03- Thank you.- It's been emotional. Show some of that man love!

0:20:03 > 0:20:05- Aww!- This hugging's catching on, isn't it?

0:20:05 > 0:20:06LAUGHTER

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- See you later.- Cheers, guys. Thanks a lot. Take care, Cheers.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15Cubs, do your best.

0:20:15 > 0:20:21ALL SHOUT IN UNISON: We will do our best.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24I'm not sure what's harder - a day on the building site

0:20:24 > 0:20:28or the nine-mile walk that Jess and her cub pack are doing today.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much a child's illness

0:20:32 > 0:20:35can affect their brothers and sisters.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38This is very cool, isn't it? This place that you're camping in.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Actually, I was worried about you camping outside in the open

0:20:41 > 0:20:45but this is actually quite warm and nice and twinkly in here, isn't it?

0:20:45 > 0:20:47It's been really difficult, the last...what,

0:20:47 > 0:20:50- I suppose about six months, hasn't it?- Mm-hmm.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52So tell us what's been going on.

0:20:52 > 0:20:57Well, we just, kind of...

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- just keep going. - Do you worry about Josh?

0:21:00 > 0:21:06Yes, I do. I'm scared quite a lot what's going to happen to him.

0:21:06 > 0:21:13Because I just don't like being away from Josh and Mum and Dad.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17- And has that had to happen a lot? - Yeah.- When does that happen?

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Like when they go to Birmingham,

0:21:20 > 0:21:24when they go to hospital. Um...that kind of stuff.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28You know Mum and Dad are a bit worried they haven't paid enough attention to you

0:21:28 > 0:21:30- cos they've had to look after Josh, do you know that?- Yeah.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33- And how do you know that? - Because they always tell me.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38- Do they?- Yeah.- But you understand? - Yeah, I do.

0:21:38 > 0:21:42If I was a genie and I could grant three wishes,

0:21:42 > 0:21:45what would those three wishes be?

0:21:45 > 0:21:51Well, one to get Josh better and the family happy.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54And then two, if I could have my own bedroom

0:21:54 > 0:21:59and everyone...and the whole house really nice.

0:21:59 > 0:22:06- You've still got a wish left. - Um...to be normal.

0:22:06 > 0:22:10For everything to be normal again? Mmm.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- Is it fun when you come away to something like this?- Um...

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- Does it take your minds off things for a little while?- Yeah.- Does it?

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Yeah. It does.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- See you, everyone. See you soon. Bye.- ALL: Bye!

0:22:24 > 0:22:26HE LAUGHS

0:22:31 > 0:22:33Now, I don't want to tempt fate

0:22:33 > 0:22:38but we might be about to make one of those wishes come true.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41I'm not quite sure what I'm most impressed with at the moment.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43The fact that we have a bedroom here for Jessica

0:22:43 > 0:22:46which is all she's ever wanted for the last few years

0:22:46 > 0:22:49or that it's plastered along with this room

0:22:49 > 0:22:53which is already plastered which is pretty incredible

0:22:53 > 0:22:59or that if you follow me through the utility room,

0:22:59 > 0:23:04we now have an extension which is about 40% extra house for them

0:23:04 > 0:23:07and isn't it beautiful? And all this in just two days.

0:23:14 > 0:23:19The bricklayers are doing so well, they've started taking walls down to give themselves something to do.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24This will be the new living room window.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- So what's the plan today? - We'll get this insulated out and then plasterboarded

0:23:27 > 0:23:29and then get it all skimmed out hopefully.

0:23:29 > 0:23:31We'll come back tomorrow if not.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35- Depends what the little fella... What's his name again?- Who?

0:23:35 > 0:23:40- He told us what to do. Is he Irish? - Mark.- Or Scottish.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44Look, I'll... Describe him again. Go on, go on!

0:23:44 > 0:23:45I just said the little fella.

0:23:45 > 0:23:49- What's going on? - He said, "Where's the little..." No, I didn't mean that. Where's...

0:23:49 > 0:23:50I said, "Do you know..."

0:23:50 > 0:23:53- What did you just say?- I said... - What did you just say?

0:23:53 > 0:23:56- I said "little fella" but I didn't mean it like that. I forgot your name, sorry.- Little Mark.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59LAUGHTER

0:23:59 > 0:24:04Or to give him his full title, Project Manager Little Mark.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08He must be doing something right because the roof is taking shape.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11- You all right, son?- Getting there.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15And he's managed to find this gas fitter

0:24:15 > 0:24:19who I think is one of the smartest, most handsome tradesmen

0:24:19 > 0:24:21I've ever met. Not that I'm biased(!)

0:24:21 > 0:24:24- Have you met my nephew? - I have.- What do you think?

0:24:26 > 0:24:27LAUGHTER

0:24:27 > 0:24:31You can tell by the vacant stare!

0:24:31 > 0:24:34That was a bit harsh, wasn't it? Now in the past we've had to intervene

0:24:34 > 0:24:37and stop tradespeople from physically attacking our designer.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Fortunately, Gaby seems to know how to get on with everyone.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45- So you've enjoyed yourself so far? - I'm really enjoying it and it's just going...

0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Oh no, I can't say going well cos we'll be doomed. - No, we don't do that.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52We don't say that too early. Paint a picture for us. What will it look like?

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Here we've got a lovely fire going in over there.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57- Lovely.- So they've got a centrepiece there.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Imaginary armchairs that we don't yet have here.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Still struggling to get hold of those?

0:25:02 > 0:25:04The budget is a nightmare on this one.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06We've got no appliances and no chairs.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Yeah, we have - a brand-new boiler so their bills will be cheaper.

0:25:09 > 0:25:15I know but if we've got no washing machines and stuff...

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- so I'm a bit stressed about that. - HE CLEARS HIS THROAT - So you should be.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21- Should've had that organised by now, shouldn't you?- Yes.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Don't worry, I'm only playing.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Let's hope all the disruption we're causing the Behan family

0:25:27 > 0:25:29is going to pay off.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Since we moved in, they've been staying at Helen's

0:25:32 > 0:25:36but wherever Josh is, his treatment doesn't stop.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Visits like this one from the district nurse

0:25:39 > 0:25:41are part of his life now.

0:25:41 > 0:25:45We only had two nights in hospital. Chemo went well.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47He has been feeling quite sick these last few days

0:25:47 > 0:25:51but at the moment, he's...he's OK.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54Do you want me to get rid of all your rubbish?

0:25:54 > 0:25:57You might think that being a nurse who works with cancer patients

0:25:57 > 0:26:01would give Sarah an advantage when it comes to looking after Josh.

0:26:02 > 0:26:07But it also means that she's all too aware of the challenges ahead.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10There are days where I'm fine and think, "Everything's fine,

0:26:10 > 0:26:14"we're getting through this," and other days where I realise

0:26:14 > 0:26:16what Joshua has been through, we have been through as a family.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19So what's the glue holding it all together?

0:26:19 > 0:26:22The children have given me strength.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26And I think the love of our family, actually.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28We've realised what's important.

0:26:28 > 0:26:33But now, my fear is the future and what it holds.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36It's daring to hope.

0:26:36 > 0:26:41Do you not... Y-you... You don't allow yourself to?

0:26:41 > 0:26:43I do, but then I worry.

0:26:43 > 0:26:48But, um...because we've had six months of sheer hell,

0:26:48 > 0:26:53I can't explain my emotions that I've been through.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57My heart has been so heavy, I just want it...

0:26:57 > 0:27:00It's been pounding out of my chest

0:27:00 > 0:27:03because I just want to get him well, I want to get him better,

0:27:03 > 0:27:09I want him to have...the future that his little friends will have.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11It just breaks my heart

0:27:11 > 0:27:17and...to explain to somebody who's got children,

0:27:17 > 0:27:20they would understand

0:27:20 > 0:27:24but actually the deepest feelings you feel, it's so difficult to explain.

0:27:24 > 0:27:30- So how important...is coming home? - He doesn't feel safe in hospital.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32All these bad things happened...

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Well, not bad things but things that he doesn't like

0:27:35 > 0:27:38happened to him in hospital. He feels safe at home and I want them

0:27:38 > 0:27:41to feel safe and loved and warm.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45So that's what we're working towards.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48I'm always amazed at the fantastic turnout we get for Big Builds

0:27:48 > 0:27:51but if you'd been waiting six months for a plumber,

0:27:51 > 0:27:55you might be wondering how we find all these great tradespeople.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59- How did we end up with him on site? - I was driving up the motorway to have a look at this job

0:27:59 > 0:28:04- and on the way I was listening to Radio 2.- Yeah.- And Ken Bruce was talking to him on the phone.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07- Is that right? - So he came on and did PopMaster.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10- A bit of a pop genius, is he? - Absolutely.- I am, actually, yeah.

0:28:10 > 0:28:15He got the worst score in 25 years' history of PopMaster.

0:28:15 > 0:28:19I think I was set up cos no-one gets that score, really.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23- What did you get?- Two points. - Out of?- A possible 39.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25THEY LAUGH

0:28:26 > 0:28:29Ask him a pop question, any pop question you like, go on.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32- Oh, my God.- Step in here. - Ah, see? Um...

0:28:32 > 0:28:34- What?- I can't even think of one.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37- Exactly.- It's difficult. - When you've got 13 million people...

0:28:37 > 0:28:42- Your questions were really easy that day cos I think I got 36.- Oh, God.

0:28:42 > 0:28:46- Most of the country got 36!- I think so.- Name me two Village People hits.

0:28:46 > 0:28:50- YMCA, In The Navy. - That's slightly worrying.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52THEY LAUGH

0:28:52 > 0:28:56Well, let's face it, you're not going to make your money on quiz shows.

0:28:56 > 0:29:02- Oh, Patrick.- Here you go, Patrick. Ask him any pop-related question.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05He's known as the master of pop, he can answer almost any question.

0:29:05 > 0:29:06Who sang:

0:29:06 > 0:29:11# That was my heart years from now

0:29:11 > 0:29:13# Love and pride

0:29:13 > 0:29:16- The King.- Yes! - As bad as that, no-one!

0:29:16 > 0:29:18LAUGHTER

0:29:18 > 0:29:19Oh, come on!

0:29:20 > 0:29:24So there you go. If you want to find great tradespeople,

0:29:24 > 0:29:26listen to Radio 2.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29This morning the extension looked like a shed inside.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Now it's looking like a room.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34How will you plaster over the wires and get over that?

0:29:34 > 0:29:37What we're going to do is run a batten - not this here obviously -

0:29:37 > 0:29:39run a batten along the wall up there

0:29:39 > 0:29:42all the way along the wall and make a little box.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45We'll cut some timber onto it and just box the whole thing in

0:29:45 > 0:29:47so Billy ran all his wires along there

0:29:47 > 0:29:50and then the electricians ran all their wires along that side.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52Look at the difference, look!

0:29:52 > 0:29:54That one over there is a thing of beauty,

0:29:54 > 0:29:55the wires just under the ceiling.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59And then look at those ones up there.

0:29:59 > 0:30:03- Not right, is he?- He's not right, really. Bless him, we love him, love him, love him.

0:30:03 > 0:30:08This is Andy, and before he was a plasterer, he was a chef.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10And Paul was his boss.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13- I wanted to have a chat with you about Paul.- Yeah.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16- Cos you've known him a while. How long have you known him?- 13 years.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19How do you think you'd have done in the same circumstances?

0:30:19 > 0:30:21Oh, I can't imagine it.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Cos my son comes over to play with Josh, and it's just, you know...

0:30:24 > 0:30:28It's quite upsetting to think... You know, it's just a nightmare.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31And he's such a brave kid, like. He's still smiling.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Paul sends us photos of him from the hospital and always still smiling and stuff, you know?

0:30:35 > 0:30:40- What do you make of what's going on here then?- Brilliant. And it'll change their lives.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44Now, see that frost? That's how cold it is.

0:30:44 > 0:30:48Certain days are important from a plastering point of view,

0:30:48 > 0:30:51and it's Chris in charge. And today is that day.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53This was done prior to us arriving,

0:30:53 > 0:30:57and now we need to make this floor the same level as existing.

0:30:57 > 0:31:03So, apparently, we have a superfast-setting concrete floor coming at two o'clock.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06The boys will get this in, and that's why we need to get that plastered.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09They can't go in and out then plaster it, cos there's too many of them.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11So you've just got to feed them.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13Feed them plaster, feed them tea.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16And they'll look after their own room.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21Perhaps the reason the job is going so well is because the house is a bungalow.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23- That's just one story! - NICK LAUGHS

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Do you see what I did there? Really?!

0:31:26 > 0:31:28- Do you like working on bungalows? - I love 'em!

0:31:28 > 0:31:31You're at a stage of life where you could move into a bungalow!

0:31:31 > 0:31:35Well, I don't understand it, people calling me Bungalow Bill.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37- I don't understand that. - That's cos there's nothing up top!

0:31:37 > 0:31:39THEY LAUGH

0:31:41 > 0:31:45Here's the superfast-setting concrete known as screed.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49It can't go into the big extension until the plasterers come out,

0:31:49 > 0:31:52and if that doesn't happen soon, it'll set solid.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56- Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. - I know, I know. We're under pressure.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00We've got to get them in tonight, cos this floor has got to be dry and ready for tomorrow.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03We've got floor-fitters, we've got kitchens coming in and stuff...

0:32:03 > 0:32:06but the pressure's on, boys!

0:32:06 > 0:32:07The pressure's on, lads!

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Ten, nine, eight, seven, six...

0:32:12 > 0:32:14I'm not sure he's helping!

0:32:14 > 0:32:18Billy is loading a barrow, whether the plasterers are ready or not.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22Now, we make fun of Billy, but when it comes to building, he really knows his stuff.

0:32:22 > 0:32:23Listen to this.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25They put fibre in it,

0:32:25 > 0:32:28and the fibre helps it to...

0:32:28 > 0:32:31- Bond together.- Bond together.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34If you say it quieter, then it seems as if it's coming from me, right?

0:32:34 > 0:32:37So, they put the fibre in. It reads how much...

0:32:37 > 0:32:40of the creed... Screed? Screed.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42And then it just puts a load of fibre in.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44We thought it would be a lot of fibre.

0:32:44 > 0:32:48The fibre helps the screed bond together.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51HE LAUGHS

0:32:51 > 0:32:53If you believe that, you believe anything I say!

0:32:53 > 0:32:58What did I tell you? He's a font of knowledge, that man.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02- All right, gentlemen?- Hello, mate. - How's it going?- Aye, good, thanks. Last wall now.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04Mate, you've got there, look.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Timing to...perfection.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- Well done, boys! Thank you. - No worries. Thanks.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15So, that's the screed down, and there's more good news.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17Up on the scaffold, EVERYTHING is finished.

0:33:17 > 0:33:18MARK: Lovely job.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21If you're in the area again, we'll help you out again.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24Rough diamonds, that's what they are.

0:33:24 > 0:33:25We're turning a corner.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28This place feels less like a building site and more like a home.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Boys came in here and started at 6.30 this morning.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33Got the hallway in, dropping through the kitchen,

0:33:33 > 0:33:37so that when the kitchen arrives at 11 o'clock or so...

0:33:37 > 0:33:41- All right, Ian? All right? All right?!- No!- What's wrong with you?

0:33:41 > 0:33:42Under pressure!

0:33:44 > 0:33:47- All right, John? Are you under pressure?- Yeah, always!

0:33:48 > 0:33:52Drama queens, the pair of them. Absolute drama queens.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54That's rich coming from you!

0:33:56 > 0:33:59It's been bitterly cold this week,

0:33:59 > 0:34:02but that hasn't stopped John - another friend of Paul and Sarah's.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05Here's his idea of an easy day's work.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07Screed away.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09..finish the patio off.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11I've only just started the patio, but finish it off.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15Get the path running, hopefully.

0:34:17 > 0:34:21And start prepping for the turf and the finish.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24We're here till the end. Till the bitter end!

0:34:24 > 0:34:26And they've been here since the start.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30This is make-or-break time for Gaby as the design comes together.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33She's got to be all over everything. No pressure, then.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35How are you finding it?

0:34:35 > 0:34:38I want this house to be perfect for them, and it really stresses me out,

0:34:38 > 0:34:41because I'm just worried... about every little detail.

0:34:41 > 0:34:46And it's really important to me as well that if I do my job right,

0:34:46 > 0:34:50then all this hard work these guys have done for nothing pays off.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54But if I get it wrong, just by choosing the wrong wallpaper

0:34:54 > 0:34:57or putting some furniture they don't like in,

0:34:57 > 0:34:59then I've ruined it all!

0:34:59 > 0:35:01- Yes.- So that's my worry. - No, you have.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03- No, you have. - And I know you like to...

0:35:03 > 0:35:05LAUGHTER

0:35:05 > 0:35:08They're all working their socks off for this family.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12And working over two weekends. Actually, Mark has got a sock there.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16- He's done his work so hard... - My socks have come off! - His sock has actually come off.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20Aw, she cares so much.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23Everyone here does. I love it. But she's right.

0:35:23 > 0:35:27It's all about building a house that will help the family face the challenges of the future.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33- Have you heard about the family? - Yes, a little bit. Liver transplant?

0:35:33 > 0:35:37Yeah. Little Josh has got cancer and it's been really...

0:35:37 > 0:35:40- ..really rubbish for him, actually. - Yeah, well yeah.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43Yeah, so I've made it even more important to do it, really.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46- Yeah. - Cos my daughter died from it, so...

0:35:46 > 0:35:49- Well, not liver cancer, she had neuroblastoma.- Oh, man.

0:35:49 > 0:35:53So, it's nice to give something back for a change.

0:35:53 > 0:35:57Doing up someone's house like this, with the experience that you've got,

0:35:57 > 0:35:59I mean, your home is really important, isn't it?

0:35:59 > 0:36:02Oh crumbs, yeah. That's the place you want to be.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06- It's just nice to come home and it be tidy.- Yeah.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08Cos you have so many - I don't know about little Josh, what he had,

0:36:08 > 0:36:11but we had so many drugs in the house.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13We had to have a cupboard on the walls, lockable and all that.

0:36:13 > 0:36:18And a list of what time we had to give her drugs and all that sort of thing.

0:36:18 > 0:36:22To have it all neat and tidy and where you want it, it's just something less to worry about.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26It's good hearing you say that, cos Sarah, she's a nurse as well,

0:36:26 > 0:36:29and I think for her, her way of copway of coping with it

0:36:29 > 0:36:31is just to try and organise everything,

0:36:31 > 0:36:33just at least feel a little bit in control.

0:36:33 > 0:36:37- Yeah, control, that's the one thing, because you've got no control.- No.

0:36:37 > 0:36:42You haven't got any control. You've got a little bit of control at home about what you're doing and all that.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44But the end result you've got no control over.

0:36:44 > 0:36:49To come home and it be sorted, it just... makes it so much easier.

0:36:49 > 0:36:54That sense of being out of control is very hard for any parent.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57But especially, I think, for fathers who feel it's their duty,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59their job perhaps, to protect the family

0:36:59 > 0:37:03and make things right, fix everything.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06So how does Paul feel about the people helping to fix the house?

0:37:06 > 0:37:12I'm humbled. I'm slightly embarrassed by it because these people,

0:37:12 > 0:37:15it's tough times and they're giving up a week,

0:37:15 > 0:37:18two weeks of their own time, their own money.

0:37:18 > 0:37:22And, eh... It must be difficult. We appreciate it.

0:37:22 > 0:37:25I mean, we're just very humbled by it all.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31So if you walk back into the house that you need, how does life change?

0:37:31 > 0:37:35It's just to give Josh the space that is needed to look after him

0:37:35 > 0:37:40on a day-to-day basis, somewhere he can get away from things, which he will need to do.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43There's going to be tough times for him. And with the drugs he is on,

0:37:43 > 0:37:48each time they might change a dose or try a different drug,

0:37:48 > 0:37:53there are side effects which we perhaps didn't really know about.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56Em... Some of his hearing is starting to go,

0:37:56 > 0:38:01which means now he'll probably need hearing aids for school and stuff like that.

0:38:01 > 0:38:04So that's another hurdle he has to overcome.

0:38:04 > 0:38:08Em... his heart has to be monitored and his kidneys also

0:38:08 > 0:38:12can fail through the chemotherapy drugs they administer.

0:38:12 > 0:38:14But the thing that gives us hope, we see other children

0:38:14 > 0:38:18who have progressed through all this who have perhaps been more advanced

0:38:18 > 0:38:21than Josh is in terms of their treatment,

0:38:21 > 0:38:25and you think, well, that will be him hopefully in a year or two.

0:38:25 > 0:38:27And while he is recovering,

0:38:27 > 0:38:30we want to make Josh's room a safe haven for him.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33Because he'll spend much time here,

0:38:33 > 0:38:35it also needs to be a fun place to be.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38So we built this - bed on top, den underneath.

0:38:38 > 0:38:43And who better to judge it than our very own chubby-cheeked little toddler Jules?

0:38:46 > 0:38:48Even I can fit in this den.

0:38:48 > 0:38:50- Has it looking?- Great, mate.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53Nice little den. I was saying, if this was my bed,

0:38:53 > 0:38:55I know it's handy for storage, but if I was little 'un

0:38:55 > 0:38:58I'd want to be crawling round inside and make a den under there.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01I'd have loved a den like that when I was that age.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04I'd love a den like that now.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07- Have you not got a shed? - Most men have a shed, don't they? Do you have a shed?

0:39:07 > 0:39:09- I've got four sheds. - You've got four sheds?

0:39:09 > 0:39:13- Four sheds and a garage. - I've only got two.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16- And a bike shed and a woodshed. - I haven't got a shed.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19- Have you not? Mate, get yourself a shed.- Haven't you got a shed, Matt?

0:39:19 > 0:39:23- Yeah, I got two.- Billy's got a shed but he's got a bar in his shed.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26Have you - Oi, Bill, have you got a bar in your shed?

0:39:26 > 0:39:30Mm. When we have barbecues, we can have the door open.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32Oh, so he doesn't have a shed for pottering in?

0:39:32 > 0:39:36He has got a shed at the back of it, which is your space, isn't it, where your tools are?

0:39:36 > 0:39:39Yeah, all my tools. Then I've got the brick shed for the other stuff.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42- So you've got three sheds? - Why don't you have a shed then?

0:39:42 > 0:39:45Well, cos... cos I don't potter.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47Haven't you got a place you go, phew?

0:39:47 > 0:39:50Yeah, you've got to have a phew place.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53- That's why you're too tense. - You think?

0:39:53 > 0:39:56- Because you don't potter. - What makes you think I'm too tense?

0:39:56 > 0:39:59- What makes you think I'm too tense?! - I rest my case.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02- What are you talking about? When have I ever been tense? - Exactly.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06We know why... At night you go to bed thinking you're a wigwam,

0:40:06 > 0:40:10and when you wake up in the morning you feel like you're a teepee,

0:40:10 > 0:40:12so you're two tents! Two tents!

0:40:12 > 0:40:14LAUGHTER

0:40:14 > 0:40:17'It was like being run over like a steamroller, wasn't it?'

0:40:17 > 0:40:21You could see it coming a long way off, but there was nothing you could do to stop it.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25Remember, this is more than a kitchen they're making here.

0:40:25 > 0:40:26There will be extra storage

0:40:26 > 0:40:29for all Joss's medicines and somewhere to prepare them.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33But to make sure it doesn't feel clinical, these gentlemen have built

0:40:33 > 0:40:36this table and shelves from scratch using reclaimed timber.

0:40:36 > 0:40:39And they look great. Everything has to be finished today.

0:40:39 > 0:40:44And there's 32 people on site trying to get it all done,

0:40:44 > 0:40:46most of them in here.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49- How are we doing with the kitchen? - I think it's going all right.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52There's not much space in here, but we're getting along nicely.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54The spark's out and we'll all put things together.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57We're all just mucking in together.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00Hopefully, we'll be 99% there by tonight. That's the plan.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04- Yeah?- Show 'em your moustache. - You've got a moustache?

0:41:06 > 0:41:09- Yeah.- What else have you got? - LAUGHTER - Teardrops, as well.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11That's not right, is it?! It's not.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13See what happens to people when they work with Bill?

0:41:13 > 0:41:16He was probably a normal lad when he first started.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18Can you rub that off?

0:41:18 > 0:41:21- No. That is a tattoo. - It's a tattoo?!- Yeah.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24- You had a moustache tattooed to your finger?- Yeah.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26So you could do what with it?

0:41:26 > 0:41:27Just...

0:41:27 > 0:41:29LAUGHTER

0:41:29 > 0:41:32'If I say that's one of the maddest things I've ever seen

0:41:32 > 0:41:36and that no-one's going to top that, you just know that someone will, don't you?

0:41:38 > 0:41:40Can I come back in now?

0:41:40 > 0:41:41Look.

0:41:41 > 0:41:43"Love."

0:41:43 > 0:41:47- Look what it says there. That's not going to come off.- Oh.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52Oh. Only doing it for the telly.

0:41:55 > 0:41:59Who uses a permanent marker on your own face?!

0:42:01 > 0:42:05After a week outside in weather that would leave a brass monkey in need of welding,

0:42:05 > 0:42:08John's not going to let anyone damage his good work.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10He's ready for a turf war.

0:42:10 > 0:42:13You don't think you've gone too draconian with your sign?

0:42:13 > 0:42:15Works either way, I think.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19- You think?- Yeah, it gets the message out.- I think it does.

0:42:20 > 0:42:24Gabrielle wants the new living room to be a cosy retreat for Josh

0:42:24 > 0:42:25and family.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28And it's all really starting to feel the part.

0:42:28 > 0:42:32Wherever you turn, she's making sure that every detail of her traditional-

0:42:32 > 0:42:36but-not-so-traditional-it-doesn't- look-great-in-a-bungalow design

0:42:36 > 0:42:39comes together as planned.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42- What do you think, Gabbers?- Um...

0:42:43 > 0:42:47I quite like it, actually, Mark. It works quite... Er...

0:42:47 > 0:42:49No, it's not, it's lovely.

0:42:49 > 0:42:50- You like it?- It's lovely.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53I think I'm being quite low maintenance today, don't you think?

0:42:55 > 0:42:56Don't you think, Mark?

0:42:56 > 0:42:58No?

0:42:58 > 0:43:01I think that's what they call a telling silence.

0:43:01 > 0:43:05But if anyone should have been getting the silent treatment,

0:43:05 > 0:43:08it's Billy the bathroom wrecker.

0:43:08 > 0:43:11- You've been doing the hearth? - Yeah, that's all done.- Lovely.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13- Ready to go.- Anything else?

0:43:13 > 0:43:16- Splashback.- Splashback. - And change the tile.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20A repair job where Billy drilled through the wall? Have you said thank you?

0:43:20 > 0:43:21Thank you.

0:43:21 > 0:43:24These boys have just tidied up your little...

0:43:24 > 0:43:28- We took the tile out, didn't we? - "We"?- Yeah. John.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30- I think you broke the tile, didn't you?- Yeah.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32Just two inches out, that's all it was, two inches out.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37It doesn't matter whether it's two inches or a mile, Bill.

0:43:37 > 0:43:38If it's wrong, it's wrong.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42As this lot are finding out

0:43:42 > 0:43:44with a fridge that just won't go where it should.

0:43:44 > 0:43:47These need to be flush with the front of that unit.

0:43:47 > 0:43:51- That's how you screw it into the unit.- 45 mil.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54- And with 80 mil... - ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Got to come out and take it back again.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58That's fantastic, isn't it?

0:43:58 > 0:44:01You got guys who have brought the white goods along for us,

0:44:01 > 0:44:03an electrician in on the conversation, two chippies,

0:44:03 > 0:44:06and they've worked it out between them. And...

0:44:06 > 0:44:10- Do you need an 'and? > - No, thanks very much. We're all right, thanks, Bill.

0:44:11 > 0:44:14We're not going to let him at it, are we?

0:44:14 > 0:44:17'Next time there's a problem we just need everyone to put

0:44:17 > 0:44:20their heads together and stress Gabrielle out completely.

0:44:22 > 0:44:27Yeah, what's going on here? The island's in the wrong position.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30It's too close because that corridor's too narrow.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33If you bend in front of the oven like that, and bring a tray out of the oven,

0:44:33 > 0:44:36you've got to turn. You need the turning space.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39- Is it screwed to the floor? - It's here.

0:44:39 > 0:44:43This is centralised on the island, you see.

0:44:43 > 0:44:46- We have to do something with that. Either we...- No.

0:44:46 > 0:44:48We put something with a hook on to take the light over.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51That's going to be too short up there.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54Can we move it along and see what it looks like?

0:44:54 > 0:44:56Let's make a decision really quickly,

0:44:56 > 0:44:59because there's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,

0:44:59 > 0:45:01nine people standing over here who should be working.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04- We've got to move it so let's... - It's got to be moved.

0:45:04 > 0:45:05Two, three...

0:45:05 > 0:45:09Keep going, keep going, keep going. Yes!

0:45:09 > 0:45:11Lie in there, get the extra key and give it slung down.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14Get this kitchen finished. Come on. ALL: Yes.

0:45:18 > 0:45:19Late into the night,

0:45:19 > 0:45:23Gaby's still hard at it, sorting out the last details of the kitchen.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26And there's one last hurdle. This worktop is attractive,

0:45:26 > 0:45:28hard-wearing, hygienic

0:45:28 > 0:45:31and can be bonded to form a single length.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33Shame it doesn't fit.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38Now we've got a problem with the splashback, as well.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41Those walls are supposed to be in line with each other. That's...

0:45:41 > 0:45:44- That's why... - We need these worktops in tonight.

0:45:44 > 0:45:47The boys have literary got an hour left.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50- They're doing their best, let's just...- Let's argue about it later.

0:45:50 > 0:45:52Remember, lads,

0:45:52 > 0:45:55measure twice, cut once.

0:45:55 > 0:45:57Right. Let's cut this one.

0:45:59 > 0:46:02Well, it wouldn't be a Big Build without a last-minute problem

0:46:02 > 0:46:05and a late finish, would it?

0:46:09 > 0:46:11Over the last few months,

0:46:11 > 0:46:15the Behan family have had their world turned upside down.

0:46:15 > 0:46:16I just want to be their mum.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19It would be nice not to worry about the house,

0:46:19 > 0:46:21just to come home, somewhere we can be safe.

0:46:21 > 0:46:23And even after Josh's transplant,

0:46:23 > 0:46:26they still have some big challenges ahead.

0:46:26 > 0:46:30We treat every day as it comes. Some days are good, some days are bad.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32If you could make everything better,

0:46:32 > 0:46:34what would be the first thing on your list?

0:46:34 > 0:46:38To make our family normal again.

0:46:38 > 0:46:41Um, and just be happy.

0:46:41 > 0:46:44So how much do you look forward to going home?

0:46:44 > 0:46:46A lot.

0:46:46 > 0:46:50But now they have one less thing to worry about.

0:46:53 > 0:46:57Thanks to the incredible efforts of 110 tradesmen and women...

0:47:03 > 0:47:08..we've given Josh a room of his own. It's comfortable and fun.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13And it's somewhere to recover.

0:47:17 > 0:47:20We've given Jess the room of her own she wanted

0:47:20 > 0:47:22and needed so badly.

0:47:24 > 0:47:28After the months she's spent staying with friends while Josh

0:47:28 > 0:47:31was in hospital, at last she has a space of her own at home.

0:47:35 > 0:47:37For Sarah and Paul,

0:47:37 > 0:47:42there's somewhere comfortable to relax at last.

0:47:47 > 0:47:51There's a cosy living room that has the traditional feel Sarah loves,

0:47:51 > 0:47:54but still works in this modern bungalow.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02And perhaps most important of all,

0:48:02 > 0:48:06a kitchen-diner where the family can be together.

0:48:06 > 0:48:09With storage space for all Josh's medicines

0:48:09 > 0:48:11right in the centre of the house.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18After all the difficulties of the last few months,

0:48:18 > 0:48:23it's somewhere they can really enjoy coming home to.

0:48:38 > 0:48:39What did you need?

0:48:39 > 0:48:43Somewhere just to feel safe and normal,

0:48:43 > 0:48:45just to have that sanctuary of home.

0:48:45 > 0:48:47OK, well,

0:48:47 > 0:48:52a lot of people worked very hard over a very short time

0:48:52 > 0:48:55and I think they've done an amazing job

0:48:55 > 0:48:59and I think they've given you what you need, so...

0:48:59 > 0:49:01if you're ready?

0:49:01 > 0:49:03Hm-hm

0:49:03 > 0:49:05Open your eyes.

0:49:23 > 0:49:24It's stunning.

0:49:32 > 0:49:34Probably of importance to you,

0:49:34 > 0:49:36while we're in this part of the kitchen,

0:49:36 > 0:49:40is if you walk into that part of the kitchen, which extends all the way through,

0:49:40 > 0:49:43you've got an important storage space for you to put Josh's stuff.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46This is the idea - to give you the space

0:49:46 > 0:49:49to have all Josh's medical equipment

0:49:49 > 0:49:52and have it available and a worktop to work on.

0:49:52 > 0:49:55But not for it to dominate the whole house,

0:49:55 > 0:49:57so it keeps all that under control.

0:49:57 > 0:50:01It's... I never thought I'd have anything like this. Ever.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14And it's just like home.
