0:00:04 > 0:00:06Hello and welcome to DIY SOS.
0:00:06 > 0:00:09This week, we're coming to you from Greater Manchester.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11So, here we are in Coronation Street.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13Well, not really, but this close-knit community is just
0:00:13 > 0:00:16a few miles from that fictional world.
0:00:18 > 0:00:24We're here to help a mum, dad, and triplets trapped in a tiny house.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27- Depressed.- Yeah, it does get you down a bit.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29To be honest, a lot of the time, I get on with it
0:00:29 > 0:00:31cos you have to get through the day with the children,
0:00:31 > 0:00:34but some days, it does bear down heavy on me.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37It's every night for her. It's horrible.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it,
0:00:41 > 0:00:42it's amazing.
0:00:42 > 0:00:46The whole family is involved. Granny...
0:00:46 > 0:00:49People might just think, "Triplets? I've had three children."
0:00:49 > 0:00:52But not all at once, you haven't. It's so much harder.
0:00:52 > 0:00:53Grandpa...
0:00:53 > 0:00:56Obviously, grannies help out and great-grandmas and everybody,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58sisters, brothers, you know, everybody.
0:00:58 > 0:01:01Everyone mucks in, but she's still left with them on her own.
0:01:01 > 0:01:02It's very hard work.
0:01:02 > 0:01:03Even Great-grandma...
0:01:03 > 0:01:06I never, ever thought anybody would do
0:01:06 > 0:01:09anything like this for our family.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13It may be a small house, but it's a big build.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16But all we're doing on this one, look...
0:01:16 > 0:01:17We're just going backwards.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20This was going to be a little one.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23- This was going to be a manageable one.- How far are we behind?
0:01:23 > 0:01:25I reckon we're two days behind, actually.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27As ever, we'll be relying on
0:01:27 > 0:01:30the generosity of local trades to help out.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33Sometimes, it's better to give back than it is to receive.
0:01:33 > 0:01:36All the usual suspects are here, but we're not enough.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38We need an army. Luckily, we have one!
0:01:38 > 0:01:40CHEERING
0:01:40 > 0:01:43This is DIY SOS: The Big Build.
0:01:52 > 0:01:57Rebecca and Steve are a one-in-8,000 family.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00They are parents to naturally-conceived triplets.
0:02:02 > 0:02:10In 2010, Rebecca gave birth to Archie, Isabel, and Grace.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12This is where they live.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15It's damp, dilapidated and dangerous.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19OK...
0:02:19 > 0:02:22Dad Steve's work often takes him away.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24He was doing what he could to the house,
0:02:24 > 0:02:27but then Rebecca went for her first scan.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31I remember sitting there thinking, "I'm having triplets."
0:02:31 > 0:02:35And even now, I don't think it's ever something that can sink in.
0:02:35 > 0:02:41I just see them as my three children, but, yeah, we were really shocked.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45Rebecca had joined an incredibly select club -
0:02:45 > 0:02:49just one in 8,000 pregnancies are naturally conceived triplets.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52The whole pregnancy was really worrying,
0:02:52 > 0:02:54because I had to have scans every two weeks.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56and be referred to an obstetrician,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59cos it's a high-risk pregnancy, and they did tell us, you know,
0:02:59 > 0:03:02to be prepared for a loss of one of the triplets
0:03:02 > 0:03:05or for all of them not to have been born,
0:03:05 > 0:03:08but luckily, everything was fine.
0:03:10 > 0:03:14Like all triplets, Rebecca's babies had to be delivered early.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17They had the big sheet up, and I just kept thinking,
0:03:17 > 0:03:21"Please, all cry," and I can never even, Steve, as a mother,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24I can never put into words the relief that you feel when they cry.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Because some babies don't come round,
0:03:28 > 0:03:32and I was just convinced that one of them wouldn't or something wouldn't.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36Even now, if you could bottle that feeling, it was just...
0:03:37 > 0:03:39- Brilliant.- Yeah, it was nice, wasn't it?
0:03:39 > 0:03:42It was a bit heartbreaking, because honestly, I couldn't hold them,
0:03:42 > 0:03:44they had to take them straight away from me.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50But when they all cried, I'd been so worried for nine months,
0:03:50 > 0:03:53because I was convinced that something was going to go wrong,
0:03:53 > 0:03:56I'll never forget that sound. Ever.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Both of us have still said now, we've never got over it.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02People say, "Oh, how do you get your head round that?"
0:04:02 > 0:04:04And it's like, we still haven't.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09They know they're blessed, but the children have been home
0:04:09 > 0:04:10for nearly two years now,
0:04:10 > 0:04:13and the house is just getting worse and worse.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15It's affecting Rebecca's health.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19- Depressed.- Yeah, it does get you down a bit.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21To be honest, a lot of the time, I get on with it,
0:04:21 > 0:04:23cos you have to get through the day with the children,
0:04:23 > 0:04:26but some days, it really does bear down heavy on me.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28OK, let's go upstairs.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31With Steve away rigging stages and sports events,
0:04:31 > 0:04:34there's no way they can get this sorted.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37I could be away three weeks of a month.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40And we're fighting, because I'm resentful that Steve's...
0:04:40 > 0:04:41not that he's got to go to work,
0:04:41 > 0:04:43but that I'm here with the children all day,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46- but that I'm here with the children all day, every day.- It's horrible.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it,
0:04:50 > 0:04:51it's amazing, you know what I mean?
0:04:51 > 0:04:53In this house...
0:04:53 > 0:04:56You're just constantly running around after everything.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58They haven't got any room to do anything.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00They can't even watch me cook. The kitchen is just...
0:05:00 > 0:05:02Doors are falling off. It's damp on the wall,
0:05:02 > 0:05:06they're running their hands on the wall where the damp is and things.
0:05:06 > 0:05:07So I have to feel like...
0:05:07 > 0:05:10I just don't think I can face another winter.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12You can see your breath in the kitchen,
0:05:12 > 0:05:16and you have to stand there with a coat on in the kitchen.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Of course, Steve's done what he can.
0:05:19 > 0:05:20I've thought I'm doing really well,
0:05:20 > 0:05:24and then as soon as they were born, I don't think any amount of money
0:05:24 > 0:05:27that I could earn could afford to pay for what the kids need.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30You never seem to have the money to finish anything, you know?
0:05:30 > 0:05:34Every penny and every minute goes on three lots of everything.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37There's nothing left for fixing the house.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39Rebecca is left trapped and isolated.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42She can't take the triplets out without help.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46I feel like I'm cooped up in a padded cell, in this...
0:05:46 > 0:05:48You know, this safe little room,
0:05:48 > 0:05:51where I've blocked it off for the children.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53It really, really gets me down.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54Everyone suffers.
0:05:54 > 0:05:58The two bedrooms mean constant sleepless nights for the parents,
0:05:58 > 0:06:00and their restless toddlers.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02Even now, sometimes they have nights where you put them in bed,
0:06:02 > 0:06:04and in half an hour, they're up again.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07You put them back down, and another half, you're back in.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10The thing is, most people with one child would leave them,
0:06:10 > 0:06:12and say, "Oh, well, you leave them for a bit,
0:06:12 > 0:06:15"they go back to sleep" or whatever, but with ours, if you leave them
0:06:15 > 0:06:17to cry for two minutes, they wake all the others up.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19They've woke the other two up.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23If not for my mum and Steve, I literally cannot...
0:06:23 > 0:06:25And I'm like this, I'm in tears.
0:06:25 > 0:06:27I've had a bad night with the children.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29I think I'm never going to get to this day,
0:06:29 > 0:06:30never be able to get through the day.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33I can't cope with the crying any more. There's three lots of crying.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41An extended family can only do so much to help,
0:06:41 > 0:06:42which is why we are here,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45and Rebecca and Steve have moved out.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48They're staying at Steve's gran's while we do the build.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52What do you think people don't understand about having triplets?
0:06:52 > 0:06:56Just how hard it really is, how demanding of time,
0:06:56 > 0:06:58how there's just three of everything.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01Whether you pick one up and do something for one,
0:07:01 > 0:07:02the other two come over to you.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05- Climbing on you.- Yes, you can only pick up two at a time.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07When you go out...
0:07:07 > 0:07:08Grace!
0:07:08 > 0:07:11- This is a climbing one, this one, isn't it?- Yes.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13When you go out...have you thought of buying a sheepdog?
0:07:13 > 0:07:15LAUGHTER
0:07:15 > 0:07:16I don't have...
0:07:16 > 0:07:18ALL: Oooh!
0:07:18 > 0:07:19Come on.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23This is almost impossible, to have a conversation with you while we're...
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Why don't we just bail out at the moment and come and meet
0:07:26 > 0:07:29the guys outside, and we can get them off to work straightaway.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34There you go, look. There's another one!
0:07:36 > 0:07:38There's another one as well. They go.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40How are you doing, Steve?
0:07:40 > 0:07:42- All right?- How are you doing, bud?
0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Nice to meet you.- All right, mate?
0:07:44 > 0:07:45THEY GREET EACH OTHER
0:07:47 > 0:07:51- Chris. Pleased to meet you. You're a juggler?- Yes.
0:07:51 > 0:07:53LAUGHTER But I've only got two hands.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Can you stay still, young lady? That's it. Do what you're told.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58See, the discipline I've got with children!
0:07:58 > 0:08:01If it's contained, it's a bit of weight off your mind,
0:08:01 > 0:08:04but anywhere that's open, on your own, is just a nightmare.
0:08:04 > 0:08:07You find they keep each other amused.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09If my parents had put me in one of them,
0:08:09 > 0:08:11I might be a bit taller.
0:08:12 > 0:08:13There are six of us,
0:08:13 > 0:08:16and the children are running rings around us, to be fair.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18Time to beat a hasty retreat.
0:08:23 > 0:08:25Out of nothing but the goodness of their hearts,
0:08:25 > 0:08:29the trades of Manchester have turned out in force, thank goodness.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31I guarantee you'll have fun
0:08:31 > 0:08:34and enjoy yourself whilst working really hard.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36But there is no money in return, and it's also for the BBC,
0:08:36 > 0:08:38so there's no advertising either.
0:08:38 > 0:08:41So, on that basis, would anybody like to leave now?
0:08:41 > 0:08:43There you go. See that? Amazing.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45People always say to me, "They don't really do it for nothing."
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Yes, they do. So thank you very much.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52There's a really good sense of community around here.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55Many of the trades come from just around the corner.
0:08:55 > 0:08:58Stuart and Dave, nice. What are you doing for us here?
0:08:58 > 0:09:01I've come to do the central heating. The boiler and radiators.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03- The plumbing for us. - The plumbing, yeah.- Lovely.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05And why have you decided to join in and get involved?
0:09:05 > 0:09:08We just think it's a good cause, don't we?
0:09:08 > 0:09:09You're not going to get paid for it.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11You're not going to be able to advertise.
0:09:11 > 0:09:12You haven't seen how much I eat.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14LAUGHTER
0:09:14 > 0:09:16That we can look after, mate. That's funny.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18So why did you decide to join in, then?
0:09:18 > 0:09:21I'd like to think that somebody would do it for me as well, you know?
0:09:21 > 0:09:23- So it was just a good cause, really.- Yeah.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25- Happy to join in?- Yeah, brilliant.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27- You got kids yourself? - Yeah, three kids, yeah.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29- What ages?- Oh, hell...
0:09:29 > 0:09:31HE LAUGHS
0:09:31 > 0:09:34- Oh, no!- You've put me on the spot now! Er...
0:09:34 > 0:09:3535...
0:09:36 > 0:09:38..28 and 27, I think.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40Or 29 and 27.
0:09:42 > 0:09:43How old are you?!
0:09:43 > 0:09:44Old enough.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47He's in trouble when he gets home, isn't he?
0:09:50 > 0:09:51Now, here's a question for you.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54How do you fit five people into a two-bedroom house?
0:09:54 > 0:09:57I don't know the answer, but I know someone who does.
0:09:57 > 0:09:58Our designer, Gabrielle Blackman.
0:10:01 > 0:10:03Downstairs, they've really only been living in one room,
0:10:03 > 0:10:08so in the sitting room, because the kitchen is just unusable
0:10:08 > 0:10:11and dangerous, and she didn't want the kids anywhere near it.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14The space that we are turning into the kitchen was freezing cold
0:10:14 > 0:10:17and really unpleasant, so they were in this one,
0:10:17 > 0:10:20tiny room to eat, live and play.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22Here's Gabby's plan.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25The old kitchen has been knocked down, so we can replace it
0:10:25 > 0:10:28with the utility room to deal with the mountains of washing.
0:10:28 > 0:10:32The back room becomes a kitchen diner with French windows
0:10:32 > 0:10:34onto a new, low-maintenance garden.
0:10:34 > 0:10:39The front room gets a more grown-up treatment. Very posh.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42Upstairs, Archie gets a room of his own.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46The girls move to the front, and we're adding a whole new floor
0:10:46 > 0:10:49so that Mum and Dad can have a room of their own.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58It fits, but only just. As long as nothing changes, we should be fine.
0:10:58 > 0:10:59Now, to get this job done,
0:10:59 > 0:11:02we had to do a little prep work before we could start.
0:11:02 > 0:11:07So what was here before was a wreck of an old red-brick building.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10Guys came in, they've dug all this out, they put the foundations in,
0:11:10 > 0:11:13the slabs in, they've even moved the drains around.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16We've got to put a pitched roof on this, little slate pitched roof.
0:11:16 > 0:11:17- Like that one?- Yeah.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20But we're going to put some little roof windows into it.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22It'll be pretty and nice, and lots of light in it as well.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24- It's not the hugest house, is it?- No.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26It's tiny. That's what it is.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29Very much like the builder I was just talking to.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32Tight old space, isn't it? Only a little house.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34Very small, isn't it?
0:11:34 > 0:11:36We can't really throw a lot of people at this, can we?
0:11:36 > 0:11:39- No, it's going to be very managed, this one, I think.- Yeah.
0:11:39 > 0:11:44- The right people in the right places all the time.- Yeah.- No dead weight.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47- So move.- That's a nice start to the day, isn't it, really?
0:11:49 > 0:11:53Assessing space is one of Chris' many fortes.
0:11:53 > 0:11:5920ml in here, and next door will be 50, 62.5, 62.5.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03So it'll be 70ml. So you're 5ml over.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05Genius, Chris. He's full of surprises.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08Shame it doesn't run throughout the whole team, though.
0:12:08 > 0:12:10This is what we've got.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12We were trying to write "intermediate",
0:12:12 > 0:12:14but we've got "imedit..."
0:12:14 > 0:12:16"Imedictate".
0:12:16 > 0:12:17"Imedicate".
0:12:17 > 0:12:19But then, it's got better.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22That's the second attempt.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26So, because I couldn't spell it, I'm going to put "2 gang 2-ways".
0:12:26 > 0:12:27It's easier.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30- I can spell that. - Clear as mud, Billy.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33Thanks very much for not clearing that up.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36There's a lot to do before the loft company get stuck in.
0:12:36 > 0:12:37The family needs space,
0:12:37 > 0:12:39so I reckon we should take that chimney down
0:12:39 > 0:12:42right through the house. Think of the room it'll make.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47- Whose idea was it?- I don't want to say. I don't think it's important.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49- It's not...- You don't want to mention whose idea it was?
0:12:49 > 0:12:51I don't think there's any need. It's not about that.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53It's about the end product. It's not about who...
0:12:53 > 0:12:56It's not about who comes up with those great ideas.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59Give Nick a round of applause for his fantastic idea, please.
0:12:59 > 0:13:01Thank you very much. Well done.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04THEY APPLAUD
0:13:04 > 0:13:07- He's so humble! - What an incredible guy.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11I'd just like to thank my agent, and...
0:13:11 > 0:13:13There is, of course, no 'I' in "team",
0:13:13 > 0:13:14but there is one in "Nick".
0:13:16 > 0:13:20One person's bright idea is a designer's nightmare, of course.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23So, because the chimney breast is now coming out,
0:13:23 > 0:13:27it opens up a lot of possibilities,
0:13:27 > 0:13:29which is really, really exciting and brilliant,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32but sort of really stressful to do it right now,
0:13:32 > 0:13:35because we'd ordered Kitchen A with the chimney breast situation,
0:13:35 > 0:13:37and now that's changed, so I've got
0:13:37 > 0:13:40the guy from the kitchen company coming down.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Yada, yada. You just can't please some people, can you?
0:13:43 > 0:13:45We've just given her a load more kitchen.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48Surely she can persuade Brian to do something great with that space?
0:13:48 > 0:13:50So now, this is coming out completely.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53Now we're taking it all out. A quick redraw...
0:13:53 > 0:13:55Oh, Brian, that's brilliant.
0:13:55 > 0:13:58And we've managed to then lift the cooker away from the kiddies,
0:13:58 > 0:13:59so it's in a safer place.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01That's really lucky, cos the schedule,
0:14:01 > 0:14:02unfortunately, has not moved.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06The chimney breast has moved, but the schedule remains the same.
0:14:06 > 0:14:07That's not lucky at all.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10What we've taken on is more than just the house.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13It's where Rebecca was born. She went to the school opposite.
0:14:13 > 0:14:17While her sisters look after the triplets, I grab the chance to talk.
0:14:17 > 0:14:19Why is the house such a big deal?
0:14:19 > 0:14:21What is it about it that you don't want to leave?
0:14:21 > 0:14:23Well, obviously, because I grew up there, so it's got a lot
0:14:23 > 0:14:26of memories for me, and Stephen grew up on the street behind,
0:14:26 > 0:14:28and we both went to the school across the road at the same time,
0:14:28 > 0:14:31and I want my children to attend that school.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34It's the very house where their love story began.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36You got together how long now?
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Well, when we were children, we used to play together
0:14:38 > 0:14:40and he used to live on the street opposite.
0:14:40 > 0:14:41But not snogging or anything?
0:14:41 > 0:14:44We had our first kiss together when we were very young.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46- Before we went to secondary school. In the house we live in now.- No!
0:14:46 > 0:14:49- Really?- Yeah, because his parents used to live at the back of us.
0:14:49 > 0:14:50So we had our first kiss together.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53- Did you kiss him or did he kiss you? - He kissed me.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55- Are you sure? Really?- Yes. - You didn't force him?- No!
0:14:55 > 0:14:57- Because he was younger, wasn't he?- Yeah.
0:14:57 > 0:14:58SHE LAUGHS
0:14:58 > 0:15:02'Of course, Steve can't praise Becky highly enough.'
0:15:02 > 0:15:06Words can't describe how hard it must be for her, you know,
0:15:06 > 0:15:07when I'm not there and she's on her own.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10I've done it on me own, you know, she's a credit to 'em.
0:15:10 > 0:15:13They're really lucky that they've got a mum like Becky,
0:15:13 > 0:15:16you know what I mean? She's just great fun, you know,
0:15:16 > 0:15:18we always just have a top laugh together.
0:15:18 > 0:15:19She's like me best mate.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24'This build will make three small children very happy.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27'But one big kid isn't his usual smiling self.'
0:15:27 > 0:15:31I think I'd sooner be somewhere else today cos it's a special day.
0:15:34 > 0:15:36It's only his birthday.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38'He should know better than that.
0:15:38 > 0:15:43'This is DIY SOS, and we've got in cake!'
0:15:43 > 0:15:47ALL: # Happy birthday to you! #
0:15:47 > 0:15:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:15:49 > 0:15:52- That's my slice...- That brick there.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55..full brick, and then quarter bricks for the rest of you.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01'Trouble is, our celebrations are a little premature.'
0:16:01 > 0:16:03What's happened with the loft?
0:16:03 > 0:16:08The company that was doing the loft have unfortunately pulled out.
0:16:08 > 0:16:11- Now? Today? - Day One, they've legged it.
0:16:11 > 0:16:14People say to us, "D'you have a lot of problems with people?"
0:16:14 > 0:16:17And the truth of the matter is we don't.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19- Well...- But if you are going to pull out,
0:16:19 > 0:16:22if you decide to join in and you want to pull out,
0:16:22 > 0:16:24pull out two or three days beforehand
0:16:24 > 0:16:25so that we can find someone else.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27Now, we're halfway through the first day,
0:16:27 > 0:16:28and now we've suddenly decided,
0:16:28 > 0:16:31or they've decided they're not involved.
0:16:31 > 0:16:35'We need to sort this and fast. No loft is not an option.
0:16:35 > 0:16:37'The telephones will be red hot
0:16:37 > 0:16:39'while we press on with the rest of the day's work.
0:16:41 > 0:16:42'The loft company may have let us down
0:16:42 > 0:16:45'but there are 40 trades here putting their all into it.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47'Look, the new extension is already up!'
0:16:47 > 0:16:49- All done and dusted? - All done and dusted.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51How long did this take? Six hours?
0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Yeah, five, six hours, something like that.- Smashing.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56My mate Mike. Whilst you've been out the front yapping,
0:16:56 > 0:16:59me, Mike and the boys, we've been out here, stripping wallpaper,
0:16:59 > 0:17:00- knocking this one up. - Is he helping you?
0:17:00 > 0:17:02- No, he was texting most of the time.- Was he?
0:17:02 > 0:17:05I have been checking what's for dinner.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08'We're doing this for Rebecca, Steve and the triplets,
0:17:08 > 0:17:11'but now we've got a visit from the previous owner, her mother,
0:17:11 > 0:17:13'and one of Rebecca's sisters.'
0:17:15 > 0:17:20- Recognise it?- No.- Not really.- This used to be your house, didn't it?
0:17:20 > 0:17:23- It did, yes.- Before Rebecca bought it off you, this was your house.- Yes.
0:17:23 > 0:17:24This is where you grew up.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26Yeah, never lived anywhere else apart from here.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29- So this is home for you. - Yep. Well, not now.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35- This is Julian.- Hi.- Hi, Julian. - How are you, all right?
0:17:35 > 0:17:41- D'you recognise him at all off the telly?- Erm, sort of vaguely.
0:17:41 > 0:17:43Put your hand up like this.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46- Imagine him with a cake in his hand. - Ah, now, yeah!
0:17:46 > 0:17:48THEY LAUGH
0:17:54 > 0:17:57- You lived here, what's the community like?- Everybody's very neighbourly.
0:17:57 > 0:18:00There's neighbours who live on the other street
0:18:00 > 0:18:01and I've known them, we've known them,
0:18:01 > 0:18:03I'm 23, I've known them all my life.
0:18:03 > 0:18:04So it's no great surprise to you
0:18:04 > 0:18:06that we've had all these people volunteer,
0:18:06 > 0:18:07come forward and help out?
0:18:07 > 0:18:09Oh, no. All we've had is a good response.
0:18:09 > 0:18:12Everybody's said she really deserves it.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14She really, you know, she really needs it.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17We're really happy for you.
0:18:17 > 0:18:20'The extended family are dotted throughout this neighbourhood.
0:18:20 > 0:18:23'Great-grandma Joyce lives just around the corner.'
0:18:23 > 0:18:25What do you make of the fact
0:18:25 > 0:18:27that everyone's turned up to sort out the house?
0:18:28 > 0:18:31I can't express how I feel, to be truthful.
0:18:31 > 0:18:37I never, ever thought anybody would do anything like that for our family.
0:18:37 > 0:18:38I really didn't.
0:18:38 > 0:18:41Also, what a godsend if it could be done,
0:18:41 > 0:18:44cos you saw what it was like, you know.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48If the house gets sorted out, how does life change for the family?
0:18:50 > 0:18:54I think it would be easier to get them to go to sleep at night,
0:18:54 > 0:18:57cos they've got their own rooms, whereas it's chaos at the moment.
0:18:57 > 0:19:01I can get Archie to go to sleep easy on his own,
0:19:01 > 0:19:06but as soon as he hears the girls, or vice versa, they're awake, you know.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08"Oh, they're up, I'm up," you know.
0:19:08 > 0:19:11So, for 'em to have a room of their own,
0:19:11 > 0:19:15they won't all be in Becky's and Steven's, you know.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18And as they get older, they'll be able to bring their friends home.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21You couldn't have brought them home to the house previously.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27'Let's face it, they wouldn't want to bring them back to this either!
0:19:27 > 0:19:30'That kitchen chimney breast is coming down in double quick time.'
0:19:30 > 0:19:33Normally take about a week to do that.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35Four of us, four or five of us.
0:19:37 > 0:19:38About seven hours.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45You think to yourself, "Do they really do it in that sort of time?"
0:19:45 > 0:19:47And I think that's just proved it.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50- Gentlemen, top effort. - Appreciate it.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53I think one of your colleagues has just collapsed upstairs.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57Look at the extra room they're going to get in there now.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00Take that horrible little cupboard thing out in the corner,
0:20:00 > 0:20:03suddenly it's a decent space, innit?
0:20:03 > 0:20:05All we can say is it's a good job you're here(!)
0:20:05 > 0:20:07Them boys would have struggled, wouldn't you, lads?
0:20:07 > 0:20:09You would have struggled, wouldn't ya?
0:20:09 > 0:20:11Thanks very much, that's very nice of you(!)
0:20:11 > 0:20:13'Everyone's a comedian, aren't they(?)
0:20:13 > 0:20:16'I feel great now, actually. But this house is no good
0:20:16 > 0:20:18'without a room for mum and dad in the loft,
0:20:18 > 0:20:20'and we still don't have one.'
0:20:20 > 0:20:24It's been an absolute nightmare, so at this stage, we would normally
0:20:24 > 0:20:29have the floor in, we would have the structure up for the dormer...
0:20:29 > 0:20:31At the moment, it's still full of rubbish.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34I've never known a start in SOS like this ever.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36It's been a nightmare.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39'Mark is genuinely worried, as are we all.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42'If we don't get this sorted, we simply won't finish on time.'
0:20:49 > 0:20:51'After a night of pulling in favours,
0:20:51 > 0:20:54'I'm very relieved to say a loft company is on their way.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57'But they have changed the plan one tiny bit.'
0:20:59 > 0:21:02Basically, we've got to take the whole of the roof off
0:21:02 > 0:21:06and drop all these ceilings. It's a bit more than we thought,
0:21:06 > 0:21:09but at this stage of the game that's what's...
0:21:09 > 0:21:13It's going to be a really mucky, dusty day today.
0:21:13 > 0:21:16'So, it's back to the drawing board for Gabby again.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21'And whilst he's doing that there's the small matter of
0:21:21 > 0:21:24'getting the steel ridge in for the roof. Here it comes.'
0:21:24 > 0:21:26We're going to drag it over and past.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31Somebody's going to support it at that end for safety.
0:21:31 > 0:21:35- Six lads then will lift it on top, job done.- Right, lovely.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37You could learn a thing or two from him, you know.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48So it'll come out from here directly all the way to the edge of
0:21:48 > 0:21:50the building, which will make this a substantial sized room.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54A lot of work to get there, though.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04The first stage of the chaos. I can't even tell what time it is,
0:22:04 > 0:22:07but...got to have all the builders here inside the next hour,
0:22:07 > 0:22:09so we've got to have all this down and out.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11Running out of time rapidly.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20You were covered in mess yesterday, and now here you are again
0:22:20 > 0:22:24- and we've taken down another 100 years worth of rubbish.- Yeah.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28- Nothing else better to do at the weekend?- Got loads of things to do.
0:22:28 > 0:22:32- Look at the state of the house, so... - Yeah, I know.
0:22:32 > 0:22:36'I've lost count of the number of skips we've taken out of this place.
0:22:36 > 0:22:38'There isn't going to be anything left
0:22:38 > 0:22:40'and we're running out of time to rebuild it,
0:22:40 > 0:22:42'but we are ready for the lofting.'
0:22:42 > 0:22:45All in, all in, here we go.
0:22:45 > 0:22:49This has been a serious uphill struggle trying to get this loft done
0:22:49 > 0:22:51and thank yous all very much for coming here at the last minute
0:22:51 > 0:22:54and pulling it out because otherwise it would not happen
0:22:54 > 0:22:55if yous hadn't turned up.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57So have we got a problem with the stairs?
0:22:57 > 0:22:59Yeah, but we'll overcome that.
0:22:59 > 0:23:03- What's the problem? - He's on holiday.- No!
0:23:03 > 0:23:05So we'll try another number tonight.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08Right, OK. I'm going to hand it over to you boys
0:23:08 > 0:23:10and hope yous can get it done in a couple of days!
0:23:10 > 0:23:13- No worries, mate, we'll get it sorted.- Thank yous very much.
0:23:16 > 0:23:17'Yeah, but guess what?
0:23:17 > 0:23:19'The loft team want even more changes.'
0:23:19 > 0:23:22You asked for, what, an extra couple of walls to be taken down?
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Yeah, just on the stairs. They were a bit unsafe, so...
0:23:24 > 0:23:25A bit wiggly, were they?
0:23:25 > 0:23:27Yeah, better to take 'em down, be on the safe side
0:23:27 > 0:23:30and just do 'em back up, like, so, make a better job anyway.
0:23:30 > 0:23:33Is there anything else to take out of this house now?
0:23:33 > 0:23:36Let's just take the rest of it, take all the walls upstairs.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38Yeah, if we took the whole thing out and left that new timber frame
0:23:38 > 0:23:41extension at the back, that'd be nice, wouldn't it?
0:23:41 > 0:23:43A really nice front door on it.
0:23:43 > 0:23:45THEY LAUGH
0:23:46 > 0:23:49'It's a good job we've got a sense of humour.
0:23:49 > 0:23:51'Not sure Gabby's laughing though.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55'Yeah, best to leave her alone, I think.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57'I know, let's go and find Billy.'
0:23:59 > 0:24:01Doing all right down there, sunshine?
0:24:01 > 0:24:05Yeah, doing a bit of fishing at the moment. I think it might be there.
0:24:06 > 0:24:08Look at that. To be that size again, eh?
0:24:08 > 0:24:11What we're doing at the moment, we're trying to get the feeds
0:24:11 > 0:24:15from where the consumer unit's going to be into the utility room.
0:24:15 > 0:24:17- You going to catch up all right? - Yeah.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21- Thursday night. - Thursday night we promised.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26- That's tomorrow night. - Yeah.- For the whole thing?- Yeah.
0:24:26 > 0:24:27Yeah, all the way.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31'Ambitious fools! No chance.'
0:24:34 > 0:24:35The other wall.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39NOISE OBSCURES SPEECH
0:24:39 > 0:24:43'How can such a tiny house give us so many problems?
0:24:43 > 0:24:45'They're stacking up everywhere.'
0:24:45 > 0:24:47Because of the way the loft has been built this time,
0:24:47 > 0:24:51we haven't been able to really firm up the drawings.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53We've just had to build it,
0:24:53 > 0:24:55which makes me really nervous, cos of course, as you know,
0:24:55 > 0:24:58furniture does take a bit of time to make, doesn't it?
0:24:58 > 0:25:01- Absolutely.- And so we need to kind of make it.
0:25:01 > 0:25:05At the moment, I have no furniture to put in that room.
0:25:05 > 0:25:08- Well, we'll see what we can do. - That would be amazing.
0:25:08 > 0:25:14So how long do you think you could spare to help us?
0:25:14 > 0:25:16- Till Sunday night. - Really?- No problem.
0:25:18 > 0:25:22- Where did you come from like this? - From Heaven!- It's amazing!
0:25:22 > 0:25:25'We still need a bit of divine intervention.'
0:25:25 > 0:25:26How far are we behind?
0:25:26 > 0:25:28I reckon we're two days behind actually.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32How can we be when we're two days into the job?
0:25:32 > 0:25:35We're not wired, we're not plumbed and we're not plasterboarded.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37That's where we should have been in two days.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40We've created more mess than we were supposed to.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42- We weren't supposed to take this roof off.- Look at it!
0:25:42 > 0:25:44We weren't supposed to drop this floor,
0:25:44 > 0:25:48we weren't supposed to take a chimney stack out all through the house.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51If you go downstairs, at the top of the stairs there's nothing here.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53And we haven't got a staircase.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55Or internal walls, cos we took them out as well.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58And we took the internal walls out!
0:25:58 > 0:26:00So we've sort of gone back, back, back,
0:26:00 > 0:26:03but now we're starting to move forward.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06- Tomorrow's a positive day. - Not today?- No.
0:26:10 > 0:26:12'Welcome to the positive day.
0:26:12 > 0:26:15'This area is so important for Rebecca and Steve,
0:26:15 > 0:26:18'the school opposite is still a key part of their life.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20'It's where Rebecca takes the triplets for nursery.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25'At times these weekly get-togethers have been the only
0:26:25 > 0:26:29'opportunity for Rebecca to escape the confines of her home.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31'Quite simply, they're a lifeline.'
0:26:33 > 0:26:37She did lack confidence when she very first came to the centre.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40'Michelle manages the nursery sessions.
0:26:40 > 0:26:43'She's worked closely with Rebecca since the triplets were born.'
0:26:43 > 0:26:46It took quite a few months to get her out
0:26:46 > 0:26:49and build up the relationship, checking that she was OK,
0:26:49 > 0:26:53and that she wasn't going under cos Steven was working away.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56We would, generally, I would give her a phone call,
0:26:56 > 0:26:58check she was all right, or...
0:26:58 > 0:27:00Just cos we were over the road as well,
0:27:00 > 0:27:02pop over and make sure that she's fine.
0:27:02 > 0:27:06'The mums Rebecca's met here help each other through difficult times.'
0:27:06 > 0:27:10I do put on a brave face a lot of the time, Dawn can see through that
0:27:10 > 0:27:12when I'm not OK.
0:27:12 > 0:27:13I say I'm OK but I'm not OK.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18I ring you up sometimes, you come down and watch the children
0:27:18 > 0:27:20for an hour, I go back to bed for an hour and stuff like that.
0:27:20 > 0:27:24If I didn't have the support I get from my friends and family,
0:27:24 > 0:27:26I would not be able to do it.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31'Fixing the house won't solve all Rebecca's problems
0:27:31 > 0:27:34'but it will give the triplets a safer, happier future.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36'So, we'd better get on with it.'
0:27:41 > 0:27:43'Now, Gabby hasn't made it into the loft yet.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46'That's because it's not just the changing plans
0:27:46 > 0:27:48'that have got our Gabby rattled.'
0:27:48 > 0:27:52- I'm trying not to show fear but I'm not keen on the ladders.- Are you not?
0:27:52 > 0:27:55We haven't got any other way of getting into the loft
0:27:55 > 0:27:57and we need to talk about the loft space.
0:27:57 > 0:28:00I know, I'm going to do it, it's fine, but I am, yep, it's fine.
0:28:00 > 0:28:02You go up, I'll go up behind you, and if you fall you fall on me,
0:28:02 > 0:28:05I'll catch you. How's that?
0:28:09 > 0:28:12Is it attached to stuff? It doesn't feel like it's attached.
0:28:12 > 0:28:14It's fully secure and attached.
0:28:14 > 0:28:17'We're not being cruel, this is the only way up.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19'There's no stairs inside.'
0:28:19 > 0:28:20Hold onto that.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22SHE SIGHS
0:28:27 > 0:28:29How did you get up?
0:28:29 > 0:28:32The ladder. On the ladder.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35She can't, she's having difficulty speaking at the moment.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38She wasn't very keen on the idea of the climb but has made it anyway
0:28:38 > 0:28:39because I said either she came up
0:28:39 > 0:28:42- or we decided where the walls go.- Oh, right.
0:28:42 > 0:28:45'We need to decide the shape this room has to be, and guess what?
0:28:45 > 0:28:48'Gabby and I disagree on where to put the new wall.'
0:28:48 > 0:28:51- We have to fill this in, do we?- No.
0:28:51 > 0:28:56We've taken away an attic. They need some area for storage.
0:28:56 > 0:28:58'What is it with designers?'
0:28:58 > 0:29:00I would keep this shape
0:29:00 > 0:29:03and all the various shapes, we've got a chimney and all that too.
0:29:03 > 0:29:06Designers like to box everything out
0:29:06 > 0:29:09and make them all square and lose all the interest.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11Look at all our buildings these days, they're all squares,
0:29:11 > 0:29:13they're all blocks, they're uninteresting.
0:29:13 > 0:29:16Look at buildings built from the Georgian time or Edwardian or
0:29:16 > 0:29:20Victorian, look up and see the glory of the top of the buildings.
0:29:20 > 0:29:22Here, they're just flat blocks of glass and metal.
0:29:22 > 0:29:24That's what everybody's trying to do,
0:29:24 > 0:29:28they're all trying to paint everything grey, and it's true.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31All the houses that are built now, they're all like boxes.
0:29:31 > 0:29:35Square, boring boxes, ain't they? Where's the architectural interest?
0:29:35 > 0:29:38Where are they putting our skills to the test in creating shapes?
0:29:38 > 0:29:41- Nothing. - Oh, God, it's like Henry V!
0:29:41 > 0:29:46You need to have walls that are flat to put furniture into rooms,
0:29:46 > 0:29:49and this is a room that needs some furniture in it
0:29:49 > 0:29:51otherwise it's not going to work.
0:29:51 > 0:29:53'Actually she makes a very good point.
0:29:53 > 0:29:55'But while we're talking about putting new walls up,
0:29:55 > 0:29:58'the old ones haven't finished with us yet.'
0:29:58 > 0:30:04Everything you touch, look, it just falls to pieces.
0:30:04 > 0:30:05That's what we're up against.
0:30:05 > 0:30:09It's Day Three now, and predominately, on Day Three,
0:30:09 > 0:30:10we're putting it back together again.
0:30:10 > 0:30:13And all we're doing on this one, look...
0:30:13 > 0:30:15We're just going backwards.
0:30:15 > 0:30:19Hopefully tomorrow we've got an army of plasterers coming in,
0:30:19 > 0:30:23and what I want to do is spend the whole day plasterboarding,
0:30:23 > 0:30:28and then on Day Five, we'll be plastering.
0:30:28 > 0:30:32That's...and I'm hoping they're all up for it and very nice plasterers,
0:30:32 > 0:30:37which I'm sure they are, and we can, erm, we can spin this one around.
0:30:37 > 0:30:39That's what we need.
0:30:39 > 0:30:42Yeah. A positive army of plasterers.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46Yeah, you said it would get better yesterday.
0:30:46 > 0:30:48See any plasterers, anyone?
0:30:48 > 0:30:49# Hallelujah... #
0:30:49 > 0:30:52Oh, there's one! And another...
0:30:52 > 0:30:54And, oh, look! A trowel of them.
0:30:54 > 0:30:57I made that up, actually, it's not really a trowel.
0:30:57 > 0:30:59We can split some of your guys, say,
0:30:59 > 0:31:01"Right, you have that ceiling, you have that ceiling,
0:31:01 > 0:31:04"and them walls, board it, patch it, turn round and skim it."
0:31:04 > 0:31:07And we can start spreading people out over this house.
0:31:07 > 0:31:08What a sight!
0:31:08 > 0:31:10More local boys rescuing a family in need.
0:31:10 > 0:31:12About time, too. We're nearly halfway through,
0:31:12 > 0:31:15and no way are we halfway through the work
0:31:15 > 0:31:17Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen!
0:31:17 > 0:31:19Thank you!
0:31:19 > 0:31:21Look, they're all grabbing the glory here, eh?
0:31:21 > 0:31:22No - collectively,
0:31:22 > 0:31:25it's starting to look a bit like a house again, innit?
0:31:25 > 0:31:27We're getting there.
0:31:27 > 0:31:29Bit of plasterboard on the ceiling, bit of patching on the walls
0:31:29 > 0:31:32and it's halfway there, innit?
0:31:32 > 0:31:33Definitely halfway there.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38They say an army marches on its stomach.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40Some more than others.
0:31:40 > 0:31:42- What?- I told you I'd get some wages. - Yeah.
0:31:42 > 0:31:44- You having a bit of salad?- Yeah.
0:31:45 > 0:31:47Bit of salad with me chips.
0:31:47 > 0:31:49Speaking of large appetites,
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Jules' girth has followers far and wide.
0:31:52 > 0:31:54Get it? Wide.
0:31:54 > 0:31:58I've always wanted to know if that's a real belly.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01Hmm.
0:32:01 > 0:32:02I thought you were pregnant.
0:32:02 > 0:32:04That's a lot less than what it used to be.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06Yeah, but look inside there.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08Don't - yeah, you'll find the fluff, if you look inside.
0:32:08 > 0:32:10- There's lots of fluff in there. - There is, isn't there?
0:32:10 > 0:32:12- Mm, yeah. - But it's good, though, innit?
0:32:12 > 0:32:15- It's a real man's belly, that, mate. - Real man's belly.
0:32:16 > 0:32:17Like mine.
0:32:17 > 0:32:20- Yeah, see, that's not hairy enough. - Mine's a baby belly.
0:32:20 > 0:32:22- Yeah, thanks for that. - You're all right.
0:32:22 > 0:32:25- Are you happy now, are you? - I'm very happy.
0:32:25 > 0:32:27I don't know about anyone else,
0:32:27 > 0:32:29I found that all very disturbing.
0:32:35 > 0:32:38We're here because of yet another family member -
0:32:38 > 0:32:41it was Rebecca's mother-in-law Lorraine who wrote in to us.
0:32:41 > 0:32:45She too lives locally, and was worried her family were going under.
0:32:46 > 0:32:50Rebecca would deny it, but I know that it's depressing Becky.
0:32:51 > 0:32:52Because of the comments she makes.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54"Ooh, I can't get my bloody kitchen done,
0:32:54 > 0:32:56"I'm never going to get anything done."
0:32:57 > 0:32:59And she won't - she probably won't,
0:32:59 > 0:33:01until they've all left home and got married.
0:33:01 > 0:33:03People might just say, "Oh, triplets," you know?
0:33:03 > 0:33:06"I've had three children." But not all at once, you haven't.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08It's so much harder.
0:33:08 > 0:33:09It's hard.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12I've tried to get all three asleep on my own...
0:33:12 > 0:33:13It's impossible.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16But if we change the house round and get it completely done up,
0:33:16 > 0:33:18there are still three children to look after,
0:33:18 > 0:33:20and still her, predominantly, to do it.
0:33:20 > 0:33:25But it will be... I think, instead of walking into to mouldy old kitchen,
0:33:25 > 0:33:29she'll walk in and think, "Oh, this is a nice place to be."
0:33:29 > 0:33:30And I think...
0:33:30 > 0:33:34I think, if Mum's happier, the kids will feel that as well.
0:33:34 > 0:33:36What do you make of the fact that you sent us a letter
0:33:36 > 0:33:39and now there are between 30 and 60 people crawling all over the house?
0:33:39 > 0:33:42- All volunteers.- I think that's why I've had to drive past,
0:33:42 > 0:33:46just to prove that it's actually happening.
0:33:46 > 0:33:50When I got the phone call back, I thought, "Ooh, that was quick!"
0:33:51 > 0:33:54And then, you know, she was saying, "Don't get your hopes up,"
0:33:54 > 0:33:58and I thought, "Oh, well, at least they're semi-interested."
0:33:58 > 0:34:01And as time's gone on, I've thought, "It's getting a bit closer, this."
0:34:01 > 0:34:05And then Becky rang and said, "They're starting it,
0:34:05 > 0:34:09"we've got to move out," I thought, "Oh, my God, it's real."
0:34:09 > 0:34:11It is very real.
0:34:11 > 0:34:12Stairs!
0:34:12 > 0:34:15But maybe our luck is starting to change.
0:34:15 > 0:34:17Stairs!
0:34:17 > 0:34:19What's arrived? What's arrived?
0:34:19 > 0:34:22That means everything's sort of in the house, now.
0:34:22 > 0:34:23Well, if they fit.
0:34:24 > 0:34:27That means the house is actually starting to work as a house again.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32- Are you all right?- Flipping 'eck, you turned it round for us!
0:34:32 > 0:34:33- Turned it round!- Top man.
0:34:33 > 0:34:35- How's things?- All right, yeah.
0:34:35 > 0:34:37- Confident?- Confident, yeah.
0:34:37 > 0:34:39- You should be. - We're always confident.
0:34:42 > 0:34:46Yet another last minute hero. This house is full of them.
0:34:48 > 0:34:49"To you, to me..."
0:34:51 > 0:34:54Now, I may be tempting fate, but with four days to go
0:34:54 > 0:34:57it seems Rebecca and Steve will get their own room after all.
0:34:57 > 0:35:00That looks suspiciously like a loft to me,
0:35:00 > 0:35:03and Mark is looking a bit more relaxed.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05This last little hole, here - when that closes off,
0:35:05 > 0:35:06that's the roof closed in,
0:35:06 > 0:35:09then the roofers can come in and start roofing the whole thing,
0:35:09 > 0:35:12and we can start making the building watertight again.
0:35:12 > 0:35:13And I'm sort of starting to feel
0:35:13 > 0:35:15that we're moving forward a little bit.
0:35:15 > 0:35:17Which is nice.
0:35:17 > 0:35:19And then two steps back.
0:35:19 > 0:35:21That was Bill, the voice of doom as usual.
0:35:23 > 0:35:26The roofing team have been waiting day after day.
0:35:26 > 0:35:29Now we can unleash them, gazelle like.
0:35:29 > 0:35:31So, you actually get up on the roof and do a bit, do you?
0:35:31 > 0:35:33Because you're really not...
0:35:33 > 0:35:34Without being rude,
0:35:34 > 0:35:37you're not really the size for a natural born roofer, are you?
0:35:37 > 0:35:40- I am! From here.- Yeah!
0:35:40 > 0:35:43I must admit, I struggle when I roof - it's legs and that,
0:35:43 > 0:35:45I just can't do it, man.
0:35:45 > 0:35:47- I can set them up and leave them to it.- Yeah.
0:35:47 > 0:35:48Wind them up and let them go.
0:35:48 > 0:35:51At last, we are catching up.
0:35:51 > 0:35:55But we're so behind we're having to cram everyone in at the same time.
0:35:55 > 0:35:58It's such a tiny house we're overflowing into the street.
0:35:58 > 0:36:03What's making it manic? It's just the sheer volume of people.
0:36:05 > 0:36:07We've co-opted the school for space.
0:36:07 > 0:36:10It's fantastic, what's being done over there. It's just unreal.
0:36:10 > 0:36:14You know, there's so many people working - for nothing.
0:36:14 > 0:36:17And they're still doing a good job, they're not trying to cut corners.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19- You know? It's all good. - Are you enjoying it?
0:36:19 > 0:36:21Loving every minute of it.
0:36:24 > 0:36:25Normally when you work on a site,
0:36:25 > 0:36:28you're getting in everyone's way and everyone's angry -
0:36:28 > 0:36:29everyone in there, is just having a laugh
0:36:29 > 0:36:31- and getting on with it. - Why is that?
0:36:31 > 0:36:34It's because everyone's - I personally think it's because...
0:36:34 > 0:36:37You know how you get people paid different wages and stuff like that?
0:36:37 > 0:36:40Everyone's doing it for free, everyone's in the same boat.
0:36:40 > 0:36:44We're all jumping in. I was sanding banisters today - I'm a plumber.
0:36:44 > 0:36:46But now I'm doing flat-packing.
0:36:46 > 0:36:49- It's been so frustrating... - Frustrating!
0:36:49 > 0:36:53Very frustrating, because every room I've had to redesign
0:36:53 > 0:36:54while we're here.
0:36:54 > 0:36:56- Everything we've had to do, we've had to redo.- Yeah.
0:36:56 > 0:36:58You know? We went to put a wall up, the wall wasn't strong enough.
0:36:58 > 0:37:00We had to take another wall out to put a wall in.
0:37:00 > 0:37:03We put another wall in there, removed a wall and put another one in.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05Took that out and put another one across
0:37:05 > 0:37:06to make the whole thing stronger.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09We had to put the roof up, take the roof down again,
0:37:09 > 0:37:12put loads of noggings in there to make the roof even stronger.
0:37:12 > 0:37:14It wasn't strong enough, so we took it out and redid it.
0:37:14 > 0:37:16Building Control came and said they wanted more in it,
0:37:16 > 0:37:18so we retrimmed all that.
0:37:18 > 0:37:21That was the roof, so we came down the stairs and put another wall in.
0:37:21 > 0:37:22This was going to be a little one,
0:37:22 > 0:37:24this was going to be manageable, wasn't it?
0:37:24 > 0:37:26- I know.- We were quite excited about this one.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29I was really excited about this one, but I got it wrong.
0:37:29 > 0:37:32Yeah, but nothing can stop us now - unless it rains a lot.
0:37:34 > 0:37:37People say it's all about money and all the rest of it,
0:37:37 > 0:37:41end of t'day, there are families out there who are unfortunate.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44But for us to give a couple of days of our time,
0:37:44 > 0:37:48sometimes it's better to give back than it is to receive.
0:37:48 > 0:37:50I take my hat off to yous.
0:37:50 > 0:37:52But I'd better put it on very quickly,
0:37:52 > 0:37:54- cos health and safety are around. - Yep!
0:37:55 > 0:37:57We've got the bit between our teeth now,
0:37:57 > 0:38:00the weather's not going to stop us, the insulation's going in,
0:38:00 > 0:38:02the garden's getting sorted and the kitchen's being fitted.
0:38:04 > 0:38:07So, what made you give up your Sunday for us?
0:38:07 > 0:38:10I got a call. Last minute, got a call off the kitchen company.
0:38:10 > 0:38:13Basically I heard about the plight of the family here,
0:38:13 > 0:38:15so I thought I'd come and help out.
0:38:15 > 0:38:18- Got a free weekend, why not? - Brilliant. great stuff.
0:38:18 > 0:38:20- So you didn't go to church today, then?- No, no.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23- Temple was closed, as well. - Oh, was it?!
0:38:23 > 0:38:26Yes, no wonder Billy was rejected by the diplomatic service.
0:38:26 > 0:38:29But the mood on site is changing.
0:38:29 > 0:38:30HARMONICA PLAYS
0:38:38 > 0:38:41THEY CHEER
0:38:43 > 0:38:45Didn't realise you were so talented!
0:38:45 > 0:38:47- Oh, yeah.- Well done!
0:38:49 > 0:38:52He went in for another belly rub, then, didn't he?
0:38:52 > 0:38:54He's not the only one with hidden talents.
0:38:55 > 0:38:58- Plainly, you're wasted as a builder. - Yeah, I know.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00I reckon there's a bit of an opening
0:39:00 > 0:39:05when Rolf's door closes, Jules' opens.
0:39:05 > 0:39:08Yeah, don't hold your breathe, though, Jules.
0:39:08 > 0:39:10At last something's going right for Gabi.
0:39:10 > 0:39:13- Whoa, look at that!- Oh, look at the triplet bench, that's amazing!
0:39:13 > 0:39:14Ahh.
0:39:14 > 0:39:16What was that made from, then?
0:39:16 > 0:39:19- Reclaim something? - No, no, this is all new oak, so...
0:39:19 > 0:39:24- But you can see this line here, through the grain...- Yeah.
0:39:24 > 0:39:28It's through there, as well. It's all made out of one board.
0:39:28 > 0:39:30So, one plank's made all this.
0:39:30 > 0:39:33Bespoke furniture - how do they all get involved?
0:39:33 > 0:39:36- Persuaded him. Roped him into it. - Yeah!
0:39:36 > 0:39:39I knew about this one evening in the pub, basically.
0:39:39 > 0:39:42He said to me, "Oh, I've applied to build this cabinet for DIY SOS,"
0:39:42 > 0:39:44and I said, "Yeah, why not?
0:39:44 > 0:39:48"I'll come out with you, Andy, it's a good day out. It's a good day out."
0:39:48 > 0:39:51It IS a good day out - they've come from Norwich!
0:39:51 > 0:39:54It shows people like us in a good light, rather than cowboys...
0:39:54 > 0:39:57- Yeah.- It's just refreshing to see.
0:39:57 > 0:39:58And very nice to hear.
0:39:58 > 0:40:01What an incredible bunch we have here.
0:40:01 > 0:40:05I wasn't actually supposed to be here until Saturday, Sunday and Monday,
0:40:05 > 0:40:08- but I seem to have been here... - All the way.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10- You get addicted to it, a bit. - Really?
0:40:10 > 0:40:14- Yeah.- What is it that's addictive, then? Cos it is a lot of hard work.
0:40:14 > 0:40:17You start it, you want to see it through to the finish.
0:40:17 > 0:40:18"Finish" is a lovely word,
0:40:18 > 0:40:21but it's not something we're going to encounter soon.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23We've only got a couple of days left.
0:40:23 > 0:40:24That's Steve's dad Terry.
0:40:24 > 0:40:27Rebecca and Steve rely heavily on their family.
0:40:27 > 0:40:30Great-grandmas and everybody, sisters, brothers, you know,
0:40:30 > 0:40:32- everybody.- Yeah.- Everyone mucks in.
0:40:32 > 0:40:34But she's still left with them on her own.
0:40:34 > 0:40:35It's very hard work.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38A day and a half to go - would you say that this building
0:40:38 > 0:40:40is a day and a half away from being ready?
0:40:40 > 0:40:42No, I wouldn't.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45But the way you work, and the way it's organised and everything,
0:40:45 > 0:40:47I can see you'll be there or thereabouts.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49- It'll be close.- Yeah. - It'll be touch and go.- Yeah.
0:40:49 > 0:40:52It's not like we're making it up, pretending that it's touch and go,
0:40:52 > 0:40:54it actually really is on this one.
0:40:54 > 0:40:57- We lost a day on the first day. - I know. It's awesome.
0:40:57 > 0:40:58It's absolutely awesome. It is.
0:40:58 > 0:41:02And, of course, he's not the only parent on site.
0:41:02 > 0:41:03- Have you got kids?- I have. I've got one, yeah.
0:41:03 > 0:41:06Could you imagine having three babies all at the same time
0:41:06 > 0:41:08- to look after?- No.
0:41:08 > 0:41:09It'd terrify me!
0:41:12 > 0:41:14And so we go into the last day.
0:41:14 > 0:41:17Traditionally this is the point at which our Gabi gets stressed,
0:41:17 > 0:41:21and she's had to think on her size 8 feet on this one - a lot.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23So I should make sure she stays calm, really, shouldn't I?
0:41:23 > 0:41:26- We'll get there. - I know, but it's... Oh!
0:41:26 > 0:41:27It will take years off of your life
0:41:27 > 0:41:29- each time you do one of these... - I know.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31- But that's not important right now. - I'm only 17.
0:41:31 > 0:41:33And look what's happened.
0:41:33 > 0:41:35Stone.
0:41:35 > 0:41:36Ow!
0:41:36 > 0:41:38Ow! Ow!
0:41:38 > 0:41:39So rude!
0:41:41 > 0:41:43A mean, plainly you're not 17 stone.
0:41:43 > 0:41:45You're a good - what? Stone off of that? I'd have thought...
0:41:45 > 0:41:47Stone and a half? Two stone.
0:41:47 > 0:41:50Four stone. You must be about six stone off of that.
0:41:50 > 0:41:51At least nine stone.
0:41:51 > 0:41:54That's probably double your weight, isn't it?
0:41:54 > 0:41:57That's probably at least... Help.
0:41:57 > 0:41:58Me and my big mouth.
0:41:58 > 0:42:02When you think how much time we lost at the start of the build,
0:42:02 > 0:42:05it's nothing short of a miracle what these trades are pulling off.
0:42:05 > 0:42:07Usually, I would say that's on the outside.
0:42:07 > 0:42:10Do you know which side's the front and the back?
0:42:10 > 0:42:13That's to go on there and that's to go on there.
0:42:13 > 0:42:17There's so little time left, but no-one's cutting any corners.
0:42:18 > 0:42:21Luckily, the lawn's quick to lay.
0:42:21 > 0:42:23The triplets will have a field day on this.
0:42:23 > 0:42:25It's like having a garden without all the work.
0:42:25 > 0:42:27And what happens when it rains?
0:42:27 > 0:42:30Filters straight through the membrane, through the base,
0:42:30 > 0:42:33just filters into the ground, away.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35All we need now is a front door.
0:42:35 > 0:42:36That's good! This one has a secret.
0:42:36 > 0:42:39It's remote controlled. No, really.
0:42:39 > 0:42:41DOOR BEEPS Just like with your car.
0:42:41 > 0:42:42That's it open...
0:42:42 > 0:42:44- And I'm in. - Cor, that's going to be handy -
0:42:44 > 0:42:47when you're trying to keep three kids going and everything,
0:42:47 > 0:42:49just to be able to blip it and then get the kids up and...
0:42:49 > 0:42:51To get in...
0:42:52 > 0:42:53..and open it.
0:42:54 > 0:42:56And we're in.
0:42:56 > 0:42:58MUFFLED RECORDED VOICE Equally...
0:42:58 > 0:43:00What's the - what's the voice on it?
0:43:00 > 0:43:02She's telling you if the door's locked or unlocked.
0:43:02 > 0:43:04- BILLY:- "It is unlocked."
0:43:04 > 0:43:07THEY LAUGH
0:43:07 > 0:43:10We're trying to hear the door.
0:43:10 > 0:43:11I was being the door.
0:43:11 > 0:43:14I was being a ventriloquist - a door ventriloquist.
0:43:14 > 0:43:16Do you think I'll make a future out of that?
0:43:16 > 0:43:19You sound like someone off of an instant potato advert.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Oh, that was good. That was good.
0:43:22 > 0:43:24"And they eat them with their knives!"
0:43:24 > 0:43:25I liked that one.
0:43:25 > 0:43:27That was one of my favourites.
0:43:27 > 0:43:29Honestly, it's like walking into the Twilight Zone,
0:43:29 > 0:43:32having a conversation with him. Now, if you wouldn't mind keeping quiet,
0:43:32 > 0:43:33we want to hear the thing.
0:43:33 > 0:43:37Nice and quiet, everybody. Get the microphone in nice and close.
0:43:37 > 0:43:39RECORDING: Lock closed.
0:43:40 > 0:43:43Six days ago, this house was as good as derelict.
0:43:43 > 0:43:46There was no roof on it, there were no internal walls upstairs,
0:43:46 > 0:43:48and it was covered in muck.
0:43:48 > 0:43:50Now, with only four hours to go -
0:43:50 > 0:43:52well, we only need the finishing touches. So...
0:43:52 > 0:43:54we've got half a chance of finishing.
0:43:57 > 0:44:00When we arrived, we found a house that was suffocating Rebecca, Steve
0:44:00 > 0:44:03and their instant family.
0:44:03 > 0:44:04It's horrible.
0:44:04 > 0:44:08How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it -
0:44:08 > 0:44:09it's amazing.
0:44:09 > 0:44:11But it was still home.
0:44:11 > 0:44:12Why is the house such a big deal?
0:44:12 > 0:44:15- What is it about it that you don't want to leave?- Well, obviously
0:44:15 > 0:44:17because I grew up there, it's got a lot of memories for me,
0:44:17 > 0:44:19and Steven grew up in the street behind,
0:44:19 > 0:44:22and we both went to the school across the road at the same time,
0:44:22 > 0:44:24and I want me children to attend that school.
0:44:24 > 0:44:26The whole family has been involved.
0:44:26 > 0:44:28I don't think that she believes
0:44:28 > 0:44:30that it's going to be what it's going to be.
0:44:30 > 0:44:33We've had to convince her a lot, you know?
0:44:33 > 0:44:34"It'll be this, Becky."
0:44:34 > 0:44:37"Oh, no, they won't do that. Oh, no, they won't do this."
0:44:37 > 0:44:38I said, "You wait and see it."
0:44:38 > 0:44:41She's watched the programme on television, so she knows.
0:44:41 > 0:44:44But I just don't think that she thinks
0:44:44 > 0:44:46that she'd ever get anything like that.
0:44:46 > 0:44:47A lot of us are like that,
0:44:47 > 0:44:51"Ah, well, they've got it - it'll never happen to me." You know?
0:44:51 > 0:44:54- So...- You looking forward to seeing it yourself?
0:44:54 > 0:44:56I can't wait.
0:44:56 > 0:44:58Three must be their lucky number,
0:44:58 > 0:45:01because now it's the home they've always dreamt of.
0:45:05 > 0:45:07We've taken the unloved shell of a back room
0:45:07 > 0:45:10and turned it into a spacious kitchen diner
0:45:10 > 0:45:14where Rebecca can cook and play, with Grace, Archie and Isabelle
0:45:14 > 0:45:17to their hearts' content.
0:45:17 > 0:45:19The old kitchen's been knocked down,
0:45:19 > 0:45:23replaced by this warm, insulated utility room.
0:45:23 > 0:45:25There's new flooring throughout.
0:45:27 > 0:45:29With the house now child-friendly,
0:45:29 > 0:45:32the front room is no longer a padded cell.
0:45:32 > 0:45:33It's a grown-up room
0:45:33 > 0:45:37with the electronics raised away from prying hands.
0:45:38 > 0:45:43Upstairs the bathroom's had a complete facelift.
0:45:43 > 0:45:47We've added a new room, the loft clad in beautiful local slate.
0:45:49 > 0:45:50And what a room!
0:45:50 > 0:45:54The calm, indulgent space for Steve and Rebecca to call their own.
0:45:54 > 0:45:58There's a dressing table and the bed has a handcrafted headboard.
0:46:00 > 0:46:04The whole house has been rewired and the attention to detail that
0:46:04 > 0:46:08we've come to know and love from Gabriel is on show.
0:46:08 > 0:46:10With Rebecca and Steve upstairs,
0:46:10 > 0:46:14there's now space for Archie to have his own room for the first
0:46:14 > 0:46:17time ever, with space to play and to grow.
0:46:17 > 0:46:19Grace and Isabelle move into the front room,
0:46:19 > 0:46:23wherever wallpaper with a bird motif, sumptuous blinds
0:46:23 > 0:46:26and bright colours provide a very girly space.
0:46:26 > 0:46:28There's even somewhere for them to have tea.
0:46:29 > 0:46:31With new windows throughout, insulation
0:46:31 > 0:46:34and central heating, this house will be warm and cosy,
0:46:34 > 0:46:37and that's just the inside. Outside...
0:46:38 > 0:46:40..the garden has been transformed.
0:46:40 > 0:46:43The all-year round lawn provides that vital playing
0:46:43 > 0:46:46area for Archie and his sisters.
0:46:46 > 0:46:50There's raised beds with lighting and their very own sandpit.
0:46:51 > 0:46:55With a talking door to cap it all off, the house where Rebecca
0:46:55 > 0:47:00grew up can continue as her family home for another generation.
0:47:00 > 0:47:02Will they even recognise it?
0:47:04 > 0:47:06Three, two, one, open your eyes.
0:47:07 > 0:47:10- Oh, my God. - Wow.
0:47:10 > 0:47:12- HE LAUGHS Oh, it's gorgeous.- Oh, my God.
0:47:15 > 0:47:17HE LAUGHS

0:47:27 > 0:47:29It's amazing, isn't it?
0:47:29 > 0:47:32I never thought it would be like this.
0:47:33 > 0:47:35God.
0:47:35 > 0:47:38The key thing about it was to give you a beautiful kitchen to work in,
0:47:38 > 0:47:39which you haven't had before.
0:47:39 > 0:47:42Somewhere to prepare all the bottles that you need to prepare.
0:47:42 > 0:47:46The workspace to be able to cook and play together.
0:47:46 > 0:47:48Nice oven, nice hob, all the usual things.
0:47:48 > 0:47:50And you might want to pull that little handle there.
0:47:53 > 0:47:56Wow! HE LAUGHS
0:47:56 > 0:47:57Yay!
0:48:01 > 0:48:03Why's it such a big deal to you, this kitchen?
0:48:03 > 0:48:06Cos this is where I spend all the time with the kids,
0:48:06 > 0:48:08and look at all the room they've got to watch me cook.
0:48:08 > 0:48:10SHE SIGHS
0:48:10 > 0:48:14Prepare paints or...whatever I need to do for them.
0:48:15 > 0:48:17Oh, look.
0:48:17 > 0:48:20Oh, it's... Oh, wow. This is something else.
0:48:20 > 0:48:21This is a handmade piece, in oak,
0:48:21 > 0:48:23specifically for you and the children,
0:48:23 > 0:48:26with the names carved in the back. It's a triplet chair.
0:48:26 > 0:48:29BOTH LAUGH Going to feel so grown up.
0:48:31 > 0:48:33Is it the space you need for you and the kids?
0:48:33 > 0:48:34Definitely, yeah. It's brilliant.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37- I can't believe this is the same back room.- And you don't...?
0:48:37 > 0:48:39The fire used to be here.
0:48:39 > 0:48:43- There's a chimney rest there. - Very good. So you've noticed.
0:48:43 > 0:48:46There's a basic little cupboard. It's worth having a look.
0:48:46 > 0:48:48- Go and open that door.- There?- Yeah.
0:48:49 > 0:48:52Oh, my God.
0:48:52 > 0:48:55Oh, look at the wellies!

0:49:03 > 0:49:05Eh?
0:49:05 > 0:49:07I don't believe it. I really don't.
0:49:07 > 0:49:11- We used to live in here.- Toilet down here for the potty training.
0:49:12 > 0:49:14So, basically, you have a little place
0:49:14 > 0:49:17to put all their boots and coats. This is all thermally insulated.
0:49:17 > 0:49:19You've got new windows, I don't know if you noticed.
0:49:19 > 0:49:22You'll notice that as you go round the house - there's new windows everywhere.
0:49:23 > 0:49:27Things are getting on top of me with the kids and I'm having a bad day,
0:49:27 > 0:49:29I can just put my washing in here, shut the door,
0:49:29 > 0:49:32and then carry on playing with them in there without having to look at it all.
0:49:32 > 0:49:35It piling up in the kitchen or them pulling it out everywhere.
0:49:38 > 0:49:41- Marks out of ten so far. - 15 million!
0:49:41 > 0:49:44You can imagine, doing all this work, it's been fairly busy,
0:49:44 > 0:49:48so there's only so much we can do around the rest.
0:49:48 > 0:49:51Do you want to come and see the front room?
0:49:51 > 0:49:52Just turn that handle.
0:49:54 > 0:49:58- Oh!- Oh, look. - Oh, wow.
0:49:59 > 0:50:03It's beautiful, isn't it? Look at the pictures.

0:50:16 > 0:50:18All the things that you need, electronics wise,
0:50:18 > 0:50:20are up and away from the kids,
0:50:20 > 0:50:23- where they can't put sandwiches in the disc slots.- Yeah.
