0:00:07 > 0:00:10It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13just...click of your fingers and everything just changes in one go.

0:00:13 > 0:00:18We're here to help a man struck down by a devastating stroke.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20It's very, very hard, yeah.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23You don't appreciate what you've got till it's gone.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless

0:00:26 > 0:00:31and then seeing my mum get upset and sometimes, it just gets to you

0:00:31 > 0:00:34and...oh, I'm so sorry.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38It's hard, isn't it? It is hard.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Once again, we're going to need the whole community to come

0:00:42 > 0:00:44together for a fellow tradesman.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47He's kind of one of us, you get to change life for him,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51his wife and the two girls, so are we all up for this?

0:00:51 > 0:00:52THEY CHEER

0:00:52 > 0:00:54We have all your favourite members of the team,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57and Charlie Luxton the environmental designer,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00but where are we going to find people to do this in just nine days?

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Maybe we should shout, "Help!"

0:01:02 > 0:01:03ALL: Help!

0:01:03 > 0:01:08Yes, this is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:20 > 0:01:24This 1930s three-bed semi in Warrington, Cheshire,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27is home to electrician Dave, his wife Anna

0:01:27 > 0:01:31and their two daughters, 22-year-old Emma and Amy, who's 19.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34They've lived here since the girls were born and both Dave

0:01:34 > 0:01:37and Anna worked hard to make a loving family home.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41You look after your family, you're providing for them,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43you've got a home for them to stay -

0:01:43 > 0:01:46you've got to try your hardest, you can't give up.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48A healthy, fit man with no history of illness,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51when Dave woke up one morning complaining of a headache,

0:01:51 > 0:01:55Anna had no reason to suspect it was anything sinister.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Next minute, I got this phone call saying he'd just

0:01:58 > 0:02:02collapsed at work, so it was a real shock.

0:02:06 > 0:02:12At just 47, Dave suffered a massive stroke and was rushed to hospital.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14To relieve the pressure on his brain,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Dave underwent emergency surgery,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19where doctors removed a third of his skull.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25Luckily, he woke up, and then it was a matter of whether we could

0:02:25 > 0:02:28communicate with him, and the first thing he did was we made him

0:02:28 > 0:02:30put his thumb up

0:02:30 > 0:02:34and that was he did, he put his thumb up, yeah.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37But the road to recovery has been a long one.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41It's like being in a shell - you know what's happening,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44but you can't do anything about it.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47I mean, I've got some movement in my leg and I'm made up for that

0:02:47 > 0:02:50and my arm, but with my thoughts and that,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53it's like...you can't seem to get out

0:02:53 > 0:02:55what you want to say, it's very frustrating.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02just...like, at the click of your fingers, someone can just

0:03:02 > 0:03:05suffer that, sort of, massive impact on their life

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and everything just changes in one go.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13After five months in hospital, Dave is now back at home.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15For the past year, he's been confined

0:03:15 > 0:03:16to the family's old dining room

0:03:16 > 0:03:20where a hospital bed has been shoehorned in.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22It's here he eats, sleeps and washes,

0:03:22 > 0:03:26and is now a virtual prisoner in his own home.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31He can't even get around his garden, that was once his passion.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37The world Anna knew has now been completely shattered -

0:03:37 > 0:03:40she's been forced to give up work as Dave needs round-the-clock care.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42Right, just put your feet on the floor.

0:03:42 > 0:03:47She's pretty much his carer 24/7, like, she's such a loving and caring

0:03:47 > 0:03:50person and the way she's dealt with everything that's gone on

0:03:50 > 0:03:54and how she's looked after my dad, it's just unbelievable.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56I do think that there's not a lot of people

0:03:56 > 0:03:57that could do as much as she does.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01She puts such a brave face on and I just think she's amazing.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06It's very, very hard, yeah.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08But it's not Dave's fault and I don't want him

0:04:08 > 0:04:13ever to feel as though he's a burden, if you know what I mean, he's not.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18It's clear the family have rallied round to do the best

0:04:18 > 0:04:20they can for Dave, but now the simplest of everyday tasks

0:04:20 > 0:04:24have become a gruelling ordeal.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26The family's only bathroom is upstairs,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28so with Anna's help, Dave has to resort to using

0:04:28 > 0:04:33a commode in the kitchen, which is far from ideal.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36I would say that would be the part for me, that, the toilet

0:04:36 > 0:04:38because it's...

0:04:38 > 0:04:42The word you use is the right word, dignity, it's...

0:04:42 > 0:04:46To ask you...like...

0:04:46 > 0:04:49..Anna to do that sort of thing don't come natural to me,

0:04:49 > 0:04:55I don't think it should happen, and I do feel...not ashamed

0:04:55 > 0:04:59but just to take that burden away from her would be fantastic.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04It's a tragic situation that has affected the whole family.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Emma and Amy have seen their world turned upside down

0:05:06 > 0:05:10and are doing everything they can to support their mum and dad.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13I don 't want to put myself before my dad

0:05:13 > 0:05:15because my dad is very important to me,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17and, erm, sorry...

0:05:22 > 0:05:26I just think that they deserve something back for a change

0:05:26 > 0:05:30and I try my hardest to help them out with that.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Sorry.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35If that means me putting my life on hold for a little while, I don't mind.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41For such a loving family struck down in a moment of tragedy,

0:05:41 > 0:05:45it's simply not right for them to face a future living like this.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47It's a situation we just couldn't ignore,

0:05:47 > 0:05:50which is why we're here to help.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55So what's the main overarching theme, then,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57in what we try and do with the house?

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Well, for me, it's for getting a bedroom for Dave and a bathroom

0:06:01 > 0:06:04so we can have the kitchen back and we can eat as a family.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07We sit in there, and Mum sits in there with my dad, cos there's no space,

0:06:07 > 0:06:10cos obviously it's, like, the bed and then, like, a chair,

0:06:10 > 0:06:12so unless we're all sat around the bed...

0:06:12 > 0:06:14It is a bit of a squeeze, so, it would be nice

0:06:14 > 0:06:17just to have that extra space so we could spend time as a family

0:06:17 > 0:06:20again and not have to be as separated.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22So, as a couple,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25what do you miss most that the house is stopping you doing?

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Dave sleeps downstairs and I sleep upstairs.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30You miss cuddling up to him? Yeah, I miss cuddles, yeah.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32So we want to try and get that back together.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33SHE LAUGHS

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Yeah.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36Look at his face, "Yeah"!

0:06:36 > 0:06:37HE LAUGHS

0:06:39 > 0:06:41All right, we'll do our best, again...

0:06:41 > 0:06:44All right, smashing - let's get you under way, then, shall we?

0:06:46 > 0:06:48Right, we've had a fantastic turn-out this morning,

0:06:48 > 0:06:50there must be 40 builders here already,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53but make no mistake - even with all this manpower,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55the pressure is on to get the job done,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57because, as usual, we've only got nine days.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Here we go, so we thought we'd bring the family over to say hello.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02How you doing, mate? Not so bad.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04All right, how are you?

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Are you an electrician as well?

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Yeah, yeah.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11So you're going to be pointing the finger at everything that we do.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Just get me over there if you want my help.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15You've got a good one here with Ray, he's a good electrician.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Lovely! Nice to know there's at least one on-site.

0:07:18 > 0:07:19THEY LAUGH

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Right, we'd better get you off or we can't start work.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Lovely to see you all. Thanks very much.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31The lad you met there, Dave, was a sparkie,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34working as an electrician, so he's kind of one of us.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38You get to change life for him, his wife and the two girls,

0:07:38 > 0:07:39so are we all up for this?

0:07:39 > 0:07:41THEY CHEER

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Lovely, thank you ever so much, thank you, guys.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51It's a real squeeze just to get everyone in through the front door.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53A bit claustrophobic.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56We've got to make this small house bigger for the family

0:07:56 > 0:08:00and this means extending out at the rear.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01To keep the build on-track,

0:08:01 > 0:08:05we've had to get these foundations in beforehand.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Basically, Colin turned up and did all the groundwork for us.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Ah, lovely, thank you very much. And the drainage.

0:08:10 > 0:08:11Got all this sorted for the timber frame.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Very good of you to come in and do this for us, we've got

0:08:14 > 0:08:16half a chance now, haven't we? Top man.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20We've only been here five minutes

0:08:20 > 0:08:23and we've already knocked seven bells out of the place.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25At this stage, you can really start to see

0:08:25 > 0:08:28the huge task we've set ourselves.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32It's going to be a massive challenge to get the house working better for the family,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34and that's down to our designer, Charlie Luxton.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36Handsome, isn't he?

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Charlie's background is in architecture and it will

0:08:38 > 0:08:41take all his expertise to get the house working better for Dave's

0:08:41 > 0:08:45medical needs, whilst retaining the feel of a loving family home

0:08:45 > 0:08:46for Anna and the girls.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48But that's why he's here - to get the balance right.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52So what's your plan? Basically, the issue is at the moment...

0:08:52 > 0:08:55Well, up until now, Dave has been, as you know, having to live

0:08:55 > 0:08:57in the sitting room and kitchen area,

0:08:57 > 0:08:58that's where he's spending all his time.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01And the truth is we haven't got the room to put a lift in

0:09:01 > 0:09:03so he's got to stay down here, hasn't he? Yes.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05We've got to make this like a proper living area.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07The big issue is it's not a big house -

0:09:07 > 0:09:09wheelchair access has been a real problem,

0:09:09 > 0:09:13so we're having to knock a lot of stuff out just to get a wheelchair around.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16We're ripping out the old kitchen

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and building a new timber frame extension to the rear

0:09:18 > 0:09:22to create a kitchen-dining area that the whole family can use.

0:09:22 > 0:09:27This extension will also house the downstairs bedroom and wet room

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Dave so desperately needs.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31The whole ground floor is going to be levelled

0:09:31 > 0:09:36and the doorways widened so Dave has access throughout.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Upstairs, we're completely re-doing Emma and Amy's rooms

0:09:39 > 0:09:41and the third bedroom is going to become a space where mum, Anna,

0:09:41 > 0:09:43can retreat to.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Along with all this, we're renovating the family bathroom.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49At the front, we're building in a new, level driveway

0:09:49 > 0:09:54so Dave will have access in and out of the house in his chair - crucial.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57That just leaves the rear. We're creating a fully accessible

0:09:57 > 0:10:00space as Dave loves gardening and it's Charlie's aim to get him

0:10:00 > 0:10:04back out there, which will help maximise his recovery.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Because he's very much based at the house

0:10:07 > 0:10:09and getting out is very difficult for him,

0:10:09 > 0:10:12what we want to try and do is give him a destination within the home,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14so we're getting rid of this garage here

0:10:14 > 0:10:16which has sort of seen better days.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19That's his man cave. Yeah, but we're replacing the man cave, you see.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22We're building him a new man cave down the back garden

0:10:22 > 0:10:24that's properly insulated, double-glazed windows,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27so he can come down from the house, across this kind of yard,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29which is going to be a Japanese-inspired yard,

0:10:29 > 0:10:35to...man cave here with greenhouse, and then raised beds down one side.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Then his Acer collection running down this side here,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40so he can really experience his plants.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Nice. Chelsea next year?

0:10:43 > 0:10:46I don't think so, unless someone invites me.

0:10:46 > 0:10:47Well, who knows?

0:10:47 > 0:10:49HE LAUGHS

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Available for Chelsea and pantomime, I should imagine,

0:10:52 > 0:10:54still even at this late date.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57With Dave's old man cave off to the skip,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00there's no turning back now,

0:11:00 > 0:11:03but the rear of the house is almost as rickety as Dave's shed.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06This wooden lintel is nowhere near strong enough to hold

0:11:06 > 0:11:08the weight of the new extension.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10We need to replace it with a steel one,

0:11:10 > 0:11:11and there's no room for error.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14And let's be honest, Mark can't measure for toffee.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18No, no, no, let somebody else measure it.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20No, Nick, I can do it. Let somebody else measure it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23No, I can do it. Why are you called "Hundred Millar"?

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Would you mind going and measuring this?

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Because he's always 100 mil out.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Don't touch that tape! Rip it off him. I can do it!

0:11:29 > 0:11:31No, rip it off him.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34'Measure once, cut twice - that's Mark's motto.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36'Now, people say talking isn't crucial.'

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Rotate that side in, that side out slightly and go out towards you.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43'See? Crucial - made it work.'

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Went like clockwork that, poetry in motion.

0:11:50 > 0:11:51When it comes to smashing things up,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54there's no better man for the job than Jules.

0:11:54 > 0:11:55Just don't let him near your garden -

0:11:55 > 0:11:58not so much as green fingers as red mist.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Rather than hand dig them all,

0:12:01 > 0:12:03why don't we just cut them all off at the bottom

0:12:03 > 0:12:06and then rip all the roots out with the machine?

0:12:07 > 0:12:08Did you ask Charlie?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Too late now, ain't it?

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Charlie, the front garden - sorry to interrupt.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Can we rip all those shrubs out at the front?

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Can I come and have a look? Why?

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Well, in case we save some. Let's go, let's go, let's go.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26You've got a real sensitive touch

0:12:26 > 0:12:29with the living...with living things, haven't you, Jules?

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Well, this is the best way to do it, prune them, and then, erm...

0:12:32 > 0:12:36Regrowth, they'll regenerate...in the skip.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38I think calling that "pruning"

0:12:38 > 0:12:42is incredibly loose use of the word "prune".

0:12:42 > 0:12:45I think the word "massacre" might be...

0:12:45 > 0:12:47No, "prune" as in "it will shrivel up".

0:12:47 > 0:12:49It will shrivel up pretty small... And die. Yeah!

0:12:49 > 0:12:51LAUGHTER

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Hey, look! Dead!

0:12:53 > 0:12:56In Jules's defence, we do need this area

0:12:56 > 0:12:57for access to the front of the house.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59He's not just devastating wildlife.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02The shrubs in the front garden are not the only thing heading for the skip -

0:13:02 > 0:13:06the plaster downstairs is as dead as Jules' veg patch.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Chris will be busy, then.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10It's tired, right? It's given up.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12The sparkies have put the cables in,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15the plumbers have been, so they've cut little holes in,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17and normally, you can get away with patching it.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19But with this age of house,

0:13:19 > 0:13:22you're better off taking it back to the beginning and starting again.

0:13:22 > 0:13:27And upstairs is no better - it's like a bag of old biscuits.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I think all the plaster's gone in all the rooms.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33All the plaster's gone in all the rooms?

0:13:33 > 0:13:35We weren't supposed to be doing upstairs that much.

0:13:35 > 0:13:40Says who? Well, that was the plan. Whose plan? THE plan.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43You'd think a programme like this would be planned months in advance

0:13:43 > 0:13:46and that there'd be incredibly intelligent people

0:13:46 > 0:13:48at the BBC doing it. This is it!

0:13:48 > 0:13:52No, no! It's not even this good! It's Mark.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53Yeah, that's it!

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Let's pray for no more surprises,

0:13:57 > 0:14:00and we've got someone who's turned up this week

0:14:00 > 0:14:02to give us a hand with that.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04So, I've often thought it might be a good idea

0:14:04 > 0:14:07to have somebody in touch with God on our jobs.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09I believe so, I've seen your work!

0:14:10 > 0:14:14Nice to see a man of the cloth. Yeah, yeah, happy to help.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16It's just what I used to do in a previous life, so...

0:14:16 > 0:14:17You were a builder first?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20Fitter-welder I started off as at a company in Stockport,

0:14:20 > 0:14:22which is where I come from.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24What do you make of this? Church is all about community,

0:14:24 > 0:14:26and bringing the community together

0:14:26 > 0:14:28and working with the people in the community.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31That's what we get on these sites - community coming together.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34It's fantastic to see a community coming together to support someone -

0:14:34 > 0:14:36having heard about Dave's story, what he's gone through

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and it relates to a friend of mine who had a stroke at 40,

0:14:39 > 0:14:40it really resonates.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42It's nice that we can help his guy

0:14:42 > 0:14:44and it's good to see the community get together.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45Yeah. Really good community.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47What will you be throwing you hand into doing?

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I'll just labour and whatever you want me to do, I'll do it.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52I'm not bad at making tea. Really? Yeah, yeah.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55All right, well, that will put Billy out of the job

0:14:55 > 0:14:58cos that's all he's allowed to do on-site these days.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02It's not just spiritual support we're relying on today.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Thankfully, the new steel has arrived to replace the old wooden lintel

0:15:05 > 0:15:08so we can start to put some much-needed strength

0:15:08 > 0:15:09back into the rear of the house,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12and get the extension up and attached.

0:15:12 > 0:15:13Not too far out, are we?

0:15:13 > 0:15:15No, it's all right, that.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18It's gone in like a hand in a glove,

0:15:18 > 0:15:21which is always a surprise when Mark's been the one measuring it.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26It's been a full-on first day -

0:15:26 > 0:15:28just look at the expression on their faces.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31But also, look at what we've achieved already.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34It's late, but nonetheless, people are still working,

0:15:34 > 0:15:36all the electricians working in there.

0:15:36 > 0:15:37An opening's been made at this end,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40the steel's gone in up here, loads of plumbing's gone in.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42Over this side, we've taken the chimney out,

0:15:42 > 0:15:45which has made loads of room, and if you follow me,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48we have another opening, two more steels,

0:15:48 > 0:15:50and out here, an extension already.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52Isn't it amazing what people can do

0:15:52 > 0:15:55when they all get together and help each other? Lovely.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59What we've done today is nothing short of a miracle.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I've heard it said, "He works in mysterious ways" -

0:16:02 > 0:16:04Billy, that is.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06Has it been good working with a man of the cloth?

0:16:06 > 0:16:09You've got to apologise every time you swear - not that I swear,

0:16:09 > 0:16:13but some people swear, and they've had to keep apologising.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16I think he's takes it very well overall. Not a problem. It's OK.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Let's face it, when He made the world in seven days,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22He must have sworn a few times when He was putting the world together?

0:16:22 > 0:16:27He must have hit a few snags along the way? Got a few sizes wrong?

0:16:27 > 0:16:31"That pine tree I put on the side of that mountain is far too big.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33"I can't see over that roof window."

0:16:33 > 0:16:35There's a lot of building in the Bible, isn't there?

0:16:35 > 0:16:39Jesus was a carpenter. No, he weren't! Yeah, he was!

0:16:39 > 0:16:42He went around the country in his sandals and his robes.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44He was Joseph's apprentice.

0:16:44 > 0:16:45Yes. No!

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Yeah, he was! He was!

0:16:48 > 0:16:52If you can get hold a Jesus cabinet, it's worth a fortune now, honestly!

0:16:52 > 0:16:54LAUGHTER

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Yeah, but not many around, though!

0:16:57 > 0:16:59ALL LAUGH

0:17:03 > 0:17:04Morning, day two.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07There's certainly no going back now,

0:17:07 > 0:17:11we've pretty much taken the whole house back to bricks and mortar.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14I haven't really had a look around upstairs,

0:17:14 > 0:17:17but we're cleaning all the various rooms up

0:17:17 > 0:17:19and we weren't supposed to be touching them,

0:17:19 > 0:17:21but as you can see from this room in here,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24plainly, there has been a lot more going on up here than we thought.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27As Chris said, it's kind of doubled the amount of plastering

0:17:27 > 0:17:28that we were going to do.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30That's the nature of the job, though.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33We'll just have to get plasterers in, and more plaster

0:17:33 > 0:17:35and more plasterboard and go for it.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39I'm usually a glass-half-full sort of bloke,

0:17:39 > 0:17:42but looking around, there's far more work than we thought.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45It's bad news and there's plenty more to go around this morning.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47We have an issue already.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49You know your garden room,

0:17:49 > 0:17:53your insulated man cave that you were going to build? Yeah.

0:17:53 > 0:17:54Not happening. Why?

0:17:54 > 0:17:59Cos the guy that was going to build it has pulled out. Really?

0:17:59 > 0:18:00I'm not even winding you up.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03We've just had a message through that he's not turning up.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06He was going to come and build that and he's not going to do it now.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08You're not winding me up? That's what's happened.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09You're very suspicious of me!

0:18:09 > 0:18:12But the truth of the matter is it is bad news for you

0:18:12 > 0:18:15and bad news for the build, because it is an important part of the build

0:18:15 > 0:18:17that he has that sort of man space to operate in.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20But at the moment, it's looking like it's not going to happen.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22It's a blow.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25We all know how vital these features are going to be for Dave.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28No-one more so than his best mate, Garry,

0:18:28 > 0:18:31who's helping us out this week with the electrics.

0:18:31 > 0:18:32The long and short of it is

0:18:32 > 0:18:34you've known Dave for a long time, haven't you?

0:18:34 > 0:18:36I have. I've known him since '92.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40I first knew him working alongside him as an electrician.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43We got to become good friends, really decent lad.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45I was majorly shocked when I got the phone call

0:18:45 > 0:18:47to say he'd dropped down in work,

0:18:47 > 0:18:50and the first thing I did was went over to Anna to Arrowe Park

0:18:50 > 0:18:52to see her at the hospital

0:18:52 > 0:18:54and the biggest shock, as you can imagine.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57How have they managed as a family, do you think?

0:18:57 > 0:18:59I think that Anna's done marvellous,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02the girls, being involved the way they are and everything else.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06I'm just glad that he's going to get what he deserves.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09For you, as his mate, to see all these people turn up

0:19:09 > 0:19:11and get stuck into the house.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14It is dramatically going to turn his life around,

0:19:14 > 0:19:16so I can't wait to see his face.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19Aw... I can't wait to see his face.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25You know, the fact that Dave was an electrician has really hit home

0:19:25 > 0:19:28for everybody on-site and they're all there to give a fellow tradesman

0:19:28 > 0:19:31the helping hand he desperately needs -

0:19:31 > 0:19:33which is lucky, as Dave's all-important man cave

0:19:33 > 0:19:35in the garden fell through earlier.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Maybe the team who put up our timber frame could step in

0:19:38 > 0:19:39and do us one last favour.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41PHONE RINGS

0:19:41 > 0:19:44John, we've got a problem, I hope you might be able to help us.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47We were having a garden room built at the back of the house,

0:19:47 > 0:19:48and the gentlemen who was doing it

0:19:48 > 0:19:52has to pull out off the job because his wife's taken really ill.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54And we're wondering if there was any chance

0:19:54 > 0:19:55you could make a frame up for it?

0:19:55 > 0:19:59Basically, could you make us another tiny timber-frame house for the back garden?

0:20:00 > 0:20:03You are a gentleman. Thank you very much indeed.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Briefly, what we're talking about - 8-9 metres...

0:20:05 > 0:20:08It's been cut... What's happened, Charlie?

0:20:08 > 0:20:11It was somebody else with a similar name!

0:20:11 > 0:20:12Oh, John!

0:20:12 > 0:20:15LAUGHTER

0:20:15 > 0:20:18It's all on. It's all all right, don't worry, mate.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20The guy's back on. It was someone with the same name

0:20:20 > 0:20:22that pulled out of the job.

0:20:22 > 0:20:23Flipping 'eck.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28You know, with so many trades turning up on these jobs,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31I'm amazed things like that don't happen more often.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33But it is a relief as the man cave

0:20:33 > 0:20:35is going to give Dave a chance to claw back

0:20:35 > 0:20:38some of the independence he's lost.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41For a man as active as Dave, who was so passionate about gardening,

0:20:41 > 0:20:43and loved to go out dancing with Anna,

0:20:43 > 0:20:47it must be all the harder to come to terms with his situation.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50I'm not sure how you begin to get your head around it,

0:20:50 > 0:20:52but I do know he takes great solace with his weekly meetings

0:20:52 > 0:20:55at a local support group who have helped him to try and find a way

0:20:55 > 0:20:58of dealing with life since the stroke.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Being that man who provided and looked after the family,

0:21:03 > 0:21:05it must be that much harder then to come to terms

0:21:05 > 0:21:07with the situation you're in now?

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I've come to terms with the stroke.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14I'm just glad I had the chance to have some life,

0:21:14 > 0:21:16if you know what I mean, because last year,

0:21:16 > 0:21:21there was a possibility I might not be here,

0:21:21 > 0:21:25and if you've got that situation there

0:21:25 > 0:21:28where you're going to completely miss everything,

0:21:28 > 0:21:33to what you are now, with maybe a few disabilities,

0:21:33 > 0:21:35I'd take that every time.

0:21:35 > 0:21:40I've got to think to myself, "I've had a stroke."

0:21:40 > 0:21:42It is...how can I say?

0:21:42 > 0:21:45It's a massive thing in my life,

0:21:45 > 0:21:47but I've got to push on.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49I know you're a man who takes a great deal of pride

0:21:49 > 0:21:51in his independence.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54How tough is it that Anna has had to become your carer?

0:21:54 > 0:21:56I think she's been brilliant.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59I feel, sometimes, I wish I could do more for her

0:21:59 > 0:22:03because she deserves it, she works so hard, and, um...

0:22:05 > 0:22:06Hell of a girl you've got there.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08I have. I've got the best, and that's the truth, that.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11I've got the best.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14I mean, next year, 25 years' marriage.

0:22:14 > 0:22:15Who could ask for more?

0:22:15 > 0:22:17For a fantastic woman,

0:22:17 > 0:22:19you know, a good friend,

0:22:19 > 0:22:21good family friend to the kids,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24always done provide for them and all that,

0:22:24 > 0:22:26you can't ask for more.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28I know you know some of your mates are working on the site

0:22:28 > 0:22:30but it's full of people who don't know the family.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32What are you hoping to see when you come back?

0:22:32 > 0:22:36Do you know, not meaning anything, don't take this the wrong way,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39I'm not bothered about seeing anything, really.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43It's...as long as things are all right for Anna,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45they'll be fine for me.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Cos at the end of the day, I know you're saying it's all about me,

0:22:48 > 0:22:53but it's all about me wife, and if that can help her

0:22:53 > 0:22:55to keep us going, and our relationship,

0:22:55 > 0:22:58that would be great, that would be fantastic.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02I know Dave struggles with the fact

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Anna has had to become his full-time carer.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09Through it all, I think this is the hardest thing he's had to accept.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13That's why we're working into the night -

0:23:13 > 0:23:14to give Dave, Anna and the girls

0:23:14 > 0:23:17a house that is going to work far better for them

0:23:17 > 0:23:19in all the hard years ahead.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21What a perfect end to the day.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24Floor going in, plasterers all gathered in the front room

0:23:24 > 0:23:27discussing what point of action they're going to do tomorrow.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33Over ten tonnes of concrete is going into the new kitchen and bedroom

0:23:33 > 0:23:37to create a level floor area throughout the downstairs.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40You know, every aspect of the build is designed to relieve

0:23:40 > 0:23:43some of the pressures the whole family are under every day,

0:23:43 > 0:23:45a situation Dave's friend

0:23:45 > 0:23:48and fellow electrician, Ray, knows only too well.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50What do you think he'll make of this?

0:23:50 > 0:23:52He'll be made up, cos he can get access

0:23:52 > 0:23:54to all the parts of his house now,

0:23:54 > 0:23:57into the garden and into this room, as well.

0:23:58 > 0:24:0199% of the people that's on this build

0:24:01 > 0:24:04don't know David, Anna and the girls.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08It will hopefully get them back up and running, quick as possible.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13When he knows that people from out of town who don't know him

0:24:13 > 0:24:15have spent two weeks on the build helping out,

0:24:15 > 0:24:18he will get a bit emotional, I think.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Inspiring, isn't it?

0:24:26 > 0:24:27That's it. It's in the bag, isn't it?

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Floor's in and levelled out. Isn't it mad?

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Tomorrow, we're boarding and skimming all this area,

0:24:33 > 0:24:35and then, the following day,

0:24:35 > 0:24:38there'll be a kitchen exactly where I'm standing.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Proper job. Proper job.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47We're at the halfway point now,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50the whole house is being boarded from top to bottom

0:24:50 > 0:24:53so we can start to get some plaster on the walls.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56And in the garden, the team have started on Dave's awesome man cave.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Now, Charlie tells me he's never designed a garden before,

0:24:59 > 0:25:02and although it doesn't look much yet,

0:25:02 > 0:25:05if Charlie pulls this off, it really could propel his career

0:25:05 > 0:25:09to the stratospheric heights of Titchmarsh and Beardshaw.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11Dare to dream, Charlie! Dare to dream.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Do you know what I want in life?

0:25:13 > 0:25:16I want a giant pair of scissors and I want to open a supermarket.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Do you really? Yeah, have you ever opened a supermarket?

0:25:18 > 0:25:20No-one's ever asked me. I'd quite like to open a...

0:25:20 > 0:25:24Not sure there's so much supermarket opening going on, these days. Seems a shame, though.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Let's see if we can find a pair of giant scissors and a ribbon to cut,

0:25:27 > 0:25:29you could open this garden before we show it off.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32I'd love to - anything with a giant scissors and ribbons,

0:25:32 > 0:25:33I'd be happy. Made up.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36BOTH LAUGH

0:25:36 > 0:25:38Anything to make you happy, Charlie.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Outside, Billy's involved in a meeting of minds.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44CHILD: Thank you for your help, Billy.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47Oh, thank you very much.

0:25:47 > 0:25:52Oh, were these made at the weekend? Yes. Ta, princess. Thank you, kids.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Right, guys, what have we got to say to all of the builders?

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Why have you come down? Thank you.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02Thank you very much. Pardon? Thank you!

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Sorry? THANK YOU!

0:26:05 > 0:26:10Oh, thank you! Who's got a skateboard? Not me.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13I got on my grandson's a skateboard the other day,

0:26:13 > 0:26:15and I come down the path,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18and I hit some steps and I fell into a load of rubble.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21When I went to the doctor's,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24I told him it hurt when I touch there, it hurt when I touch there,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26and it hurt when I touch there.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27Do you know what he said?

0:26:27 > 0:26:28I broke me finger.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30LAUGHTER

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Tough crowd, Billy. Tough crowd.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36Inside, Chris has got some crowd control issues of his own.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40You know where all the kit is? Where all the gear is? Yeah.

0:26:40 > 0:26:41Excellent Nice one, cheers.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44There's eight plasterers upstairs.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46Chris and his team are getting some plaster on the walls

0:26:46 > 0:26:50to transform this building site into a home, which is good to see.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53We've got to hit these key stages to keep the build on target,

0:26:53 > 0:26:55otherwise, everything simply unravels.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57Working under such tight timescale

0:26:57 > 0:27:00is certainly not good for our blood pressure.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04Jane from the Stroke Association is here to give us the once over.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07You've got the best blood pressure out of all of them. Yes!

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Isn't that just cos he is low? No, it's nothing to do with that.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14He's smaller so he wouldn't have as much pressure, would he?

0:27:14 > 0:27:17You've come to do some blood pressure tests on us

0:27:17 > 0:27:19to make sure that we're all healthy,

0:27:19 > 0:27:21but it was you that wrote in to get us to come to do this.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25When David got discharged after having a devastating stroke,

0:27:25 > 0:27:27I came to do home visits to his house.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30David was sleeping in a hospital bed

0:27:30 > 0:27:33with a hoist there, with a commode there, you know.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36If Anna was doing cooking and he needed to use the commode...

0:27:36 > 0:27:40It's just his dignity, it's his self-esteem. It was everything.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43I've been working for the Stroke Association for ten years,

0:27:43 > 0:27:46and I've noticed people are getting younger and younger,

0:27:46 > 0:27:49and it's happening younger and younger and devastating.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52Because, as I say, with David, he had a great life.

0:27:52 > 0:27:53He was working, Anna was working,

0:27:53 > 0:27:55had a lovely life with their two daughters -

0:27:55 > 0:27:57danced, he was an excellent dancer.

0:27:57 > 0:28:01Then, all of a sudden, in the blink of an eye, it's all changed.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08What's becoming clear is just how much disability

0:28:08 > 0:28:10affects the whole family.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13Anna has taken on so much to become Dave's full-time carer

0:28:13 > 0:28:16and I know how much Emma and Amy worry about their mum, too.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Talking to your mum, probably the most difficult thing

0:28:21 > 0:28:25was going from wife and mum to a carer for your dad.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29I think it is hard for her to deal with sometimes, like,

0:28:29 > 0:28:31cos you've got to think - every morning,

0:28:31 > 0:28:34she's up early and she goes downstairs and she sees to my dad

0:28:34 > 0:28:37and she with trying to move me dad about and stuff.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40It affects her health and she gets tired out and things like that.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42She's still taking care of me and Amy

0:28:42 > 0:28:45cos she doesn't want us to feel like anything's different...

0:28:45 > 0:28:47Like she's not there for us any more.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49We're always saying to her, "We'll stay in with Dad",

0:28:49 > 0:28:52cos we're the only other help there that can let her go out

0:28:52 > 0:28:54and have some time with her friends.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57She doesn't do that very often, does she? No.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59She doesn't like putting on us, but we don't mind,

0:28:59 > 0:29:01but she says, "Oh, no! You're only young".

0:29:01 > 0:29:04She's just being a mum, isn't she?

0:29:04 > 0:29:07Your mum tries very hard to protect you.

0:29:07 > 0:29:08She tries not to show us,

0:29:08 > 0:29:11but she does have her down days, doesn't she?

0:29:11 > 0:29:14She doesn't know who else to speak to, sometimes,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16but we don't mind that, because we're here for her.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20Is that the hardest thing, seeing your mum cry? Yeah.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21Sorry...

0:29:25 > 0:29:29It just upsets me, seeing my dad helpless,

0:29:29 > 0:29:31and then seeing my mum get upset.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34Sometimes, it just gets to you and..

0:29:35 > 0:29:37Oh, I'm so sorry. It's all right,

0:29:40 > 0:29:43There's nothing to be sorry about.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45It's a tough thing, it's a lot for you to take on

0:29:45 > 0:29:48at the ages that you are, to deal with these things,

0:29:48 > 0:29:49and at the same time,

0:29:49 > 0:29:53I know that your mum's trying so hard to protect you.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56She's incredibly strong, isn't she? She is amazing, to be honest.

0:29:56 > 0:29:58I don't know how she does it.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00The trouble is, if she doesn't get some time off,

0:30:00 > 0:30:02it's going to wear her out, isn't it? It would be nice

0:30:02 > 0:30:06if you and your mum could get a day out or something.

0:30:10 > 0:30:14And that's the thing I miss most, spending time with Mum.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16BOTH SOB

0:30:17 > 0:30:20Obviously, I'm glad to be healthy and well,

0:30:20 > 0:30:21but we're really close -

0:30:21 > 0:30:24close to Dad, but really, really close to Mum

0:30:24 > 0:30:27and it's just changed, you know what I mean?

0:30:29 > 0:30:31It's hard, isn't it? It is hard.

0:30:33 > 0:30:34If we can get the house sorted out

0:30:34 > 0:30:36and it's a good space for him to move around

0:30:36 > 0:30:39and somebody can come and sit with him,

0:30:39 > 0:30:41I think she might be able to do that, you know?

0:30:45 > 0:30:48If I have one hope, it's for every element of this build

0:30:48 > 0:30:50to enable Dave to do more for himself,

0:30:50 > 0:30:53to take away some of the enormous pressure

0:30:53 > 0:30:55Anna clearly puts herself under.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57I'm starting to see just how vital

0:30:57 > 0:31:01features like the new garden room will become.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Very lovely, it's like a proper man cave, ain't it? Yeah, yeah.

0:31:04 > 0:31:08So, are we fully insulated? Yeah, this part is fully insulated

0:31:08 > 0:31:11and you've got a double-glazed door leading into that bit there,

0:31:11 > 0:31:15which is going to be a greenhouse, going to put shelving in for him.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18We've got French doors coming tomorrow and we'll ramp it up,

0:31:18 > 0:31:22low threshold, so he'll be able to get in and out, no problem. Lovely.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27The sheer amount of detail going into every aspect of the build

0:31:27 > 0:31:30is a real credit to the Warrington trades -

0:31:30 > 0:31:34every one of them intent on giving one of their own, and his family,

0:31:34 > 0:31:37a chance for a better future.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40So, why did you decide to come and join in and help out?

0:31:40 > 0:31:42Me? Yeah. Um, well...

0:31:42 > 0:31:45I've always wanted to do something.

0:31:45 > 0:31:50My son, he passed away, like, five years ago...

0:31:50 > 0:31:52Oh, I'm sorry. Cancer and that, yeah.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55And when I come in here and I seen the wheelchair and the hospital bed,

0:31:55 > 0:31:57it really, you know, brought home.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01Cos my son became paralysed a few months before he passed away,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04and we had him at home in a hospital bed, you know?

0:32:04 > 0:32:07And we were waiting for an extension to be done,

0:32:07 > 0:32:11but, sadly, you know, the plans got passed after he passed away.

0:32:11 > 0:32:15So, when I came here to meet everybody a few weeks ago,

0:32:15 > 0:32:17that's what made me want to give something back, you know?

0:32:17 > 0:32:21And how are you finding it? Are you finding being involved with this

0:32:21 > 0:32:23and joining in is like giving you something back?

0:32:23 > 0:32:25Course it is, yeah. Very much so.

0:32:25 > 0:32:29Cos lots of people, lots of family and friends helped me and my family

0:32:29 > 0:32:31when we were in need of help, so...

0:32:31 > 0:32:34I'd like to do something for somebody else that's in need, you know?

0:32:34 > 0:32:37Fantastic, thank you very much, mate. Appreciate you coming on.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Everyone on this build has their reasons for helping,

0:32:41 > 0:32:44but hearing Mick's story is truly humbling.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Morning. Just a couple of days to go now

0:32:56 > 0:32:58and the deliveries keep on coming in.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00These bricks have just turned up,

0:33:00 > 0:33:03so we can start to lay the front driveway.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05They assure me they can do it in record time,

0:33:05 > 0:33:07but it's not the only record we're breaking today.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10Never has a room been skimmed so fast!

0:33:10 > 0:33:12These guys rocked up two days ago,

0:33:12 > 0:33:14they've plastered the house top to bottom.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17They're stood around. "Is there anything else we can do?"

0:33:17 > 0:33:19I said, "Yeah, there's a shed to do."

0:33:19 > 0:33:20And they wouldn't split up,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22so I said, "We'll all have it, then",

0:33:22 > 0:33:25Look, they've got that on in about three minutes.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28I truly have never seen Chris so proud!

0:33:31 > 0:33:34The plasterers of Warrington have played a blinder this week,

0:33:34 > 0:33:35and we've had so many in,

0:33:35 > 0:33:37they've been almost tripping over each other.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39And talking of treading on toes...

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Dave and Anna were keen ballroom dancers.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45You ever done any dancing? Terrible. I'm a really bad dancer.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48But you're quite light on your feet for a big fella. I am,

0:33:48 > 0:33:49but I haven't got no rhythm.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52I've got medals for ballroom dancing.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54I used to do... NICK LAUGHS

0:33:54 > 0:33:56What? You haven't! I have!

0:33:56 > 0:33:58What, just like you had it for horse riding?

0:33:58 > 0:34:01Just like you did for boxing? Just like you did for cake-making?

0:34:01 > 0:34:03Billy, the Belle of the Ball, they called me.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05You look into their eyes and guide them around the floor.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08You're too short. You'd be looking into their chest.

0:34:08 > 0:34:09Better, even better!

0:34:09 > 0:34:11ALL LAUGH

0:34:11 > 0:34:13Sorry, Your Grace. Sorry. Sorry, yeah...

0:34:16 > 0:34:20Dave and Anna are getting back together with their ballroom friends

0:34:20 > 0:34:22later this afternoon - I wondered whether you three...

0:34:22 > 0:34:25I'm thinking Strictly, do you know what I mean?

0:34:25 > 0:34:28It might be worth finding out whether you've still got it.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31You don't lose it. Whether you might have it? I've never had it.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34And whether, well...whether you've ever had it. Well, yeah.

0:34:34 > 0:34:35I'm up for that.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38Well, it certainly sounds like Billy knows his way

0:34:38 > 0:34:39around a dance floor. We'll see.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42With the whole house plastered,

0:34:42 > 0:34:45we can now start to see how the new layout

0:34:45 > 0:34:47is going to work for the family.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50The kitchen-diner is looking the business now

0:34:50 > 0:34:53and the tiling is coming along in the new wet room.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54And just look at this!

0:34:54 > 0:34:58Much to my amazement, Charlie's garden is really taking shape!

0:34:58 > 0:35:01I'm a bit nervous, cos it seems to be going all right.

0:35:01 > 0:35:02You're doing very well.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04People said you couldn't pull it off, but I thought...

0:35:04 > 0:35:07In fact, I said you couldn't pull it off, it wasn't "people".

0:35:07 > 0:35:10I was led to believe he was a garden designer,

0:35:10 > 0:35:13a professional garden designer, and he's not. I'm not.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16I never said I was a garden designer,

0:35:16 > 0:35:19I don't know where you got that from, I do buildings.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21We thought we'd give him a go at garden designing -

0:35:21 > 0:35:24what do you think? He's done a very good job.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26There you go. Hey, there you go! Thank you.

0:35:26 > 0:35:27I've put me card in for the next job

0:35:27 > 0:35:30if you get any in Cheshire-Merseyside area.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32You'd do it again? I would, I'd love to.

0:35:32 > 0:35:34Why? Cos you know you're not making any money here.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36No, I know I'm not making anything,

0:35:36 > 0:35:38but it's nice to give something to the community

0:35:38 > 0:35:40and it's nice to get involved.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42I love it, I really do love it. It's great.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45It never fails to amaze me, people's generosity.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49And now, it's the big boys' chance

0:35:49 > 0:35:51to see whether they've got what it takes

0:35:51 > 0:35:54in the world of ballroom dance,

0:35:54 > 0:35:57so I've sent them along to Anna and Dave's old dance class.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01Well, who steers? You do. I do.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03Julian, she's not a tractor!

0:36:04 > 0:36:06Well, Jules has certainly got poise.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12Ooh, with that sway, Chris would be better at sea, I think.

0:36:12 > 0:36:14ALL LAUGH

0:36:14 > 0:36:18Jules isn't the only one who should be wearing the steel toecaps.

0:36:18 > 0:36:19APPLAUSE

0:36:22 > 0:36:26Well, those two certainly ain't got it. We've got one last hope.

0:36:29 > 0:36:34WALTZ PLAYS

0:36:34 > 0:36:37Holy mackerel! He can actually dance!

0:36:37 > 0:36:39Check out the moves.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23the whole of Warrington has turned up to help.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27The problem is getting everything in and out of the house.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30It's causing a nightmare for the lads laying the driveway.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32You've got me worried, mate. Have I?

0:37:32 > 0:37:35You have got me worried. You don't have to be worried.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37No? You don't think I should be worried? It does you no good.

0:37:37 > 0:37:41I know it does me no good, but 4 o'clock,

0:37:41 > 0:37:43do you think we'll be out of here by then?

0:37:43 > 0:37:45You told me 8 o'clock. I didn't tell you 8 o'clock!

0:37:45 > 0:37:48You did! I didn't tell you 8 o'clock, I told you 4 o'clock!

0:37:48 > 0:37:52I want you out by 4 o'clock, and that's it, OK?

0:37:52 > 0:37:55What time are you going to be out at? OK, I'm dying!

0:37:57 > 0:38:00There's no point in shouting. Maybe you've just got to tickle people.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02Call that man management?

0:38:02 > 0:38:05Despite the chaos, you can start to see the house coming together now

0:38:05 > 0:38:07and it's a credit to the Warrington trades.

0:38:07 > 0:38:09Up here is buzzing.

0:38:09 > 0:38:10Do you remember when you here

0:38:10 > 0:38:13and there was loads of plasterers up here in every room?

0:38:13 > 0:38:15Well, it's exactly the same, but they're a bit cleaner.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17There's painters everywhere.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19Painters in here, we've got painters in here,

0:38:19 > 0:38:22we've got plumbers down there, look!

0:38:22 > 0:38:24There's another one.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27You're not coming out until it's finished!

0:38:30 > 0:38:31Over the last nine days,

0:38:31 > 0:38:34no corner of this house has been left untouched,

0:38:34 > 0:38:36as it's got to work not just for Dave,

0:38:36 > 0:38:38but the girls and Anna, too.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42Over the course of the week, I've started to realise

0:38:42 > 0:38:46just how much Anna has taken on, caring for Dave,

0:38:46 > 0:38:48and it's been worrying me,

0:38:48 > 0:38:51cos I honestly think she'll burn out if she's not careful.

0:38:52 > 0:38:58What would people not understand about how life changes?

0:38:58 > 0:39:02They just don't. I didn't understand how much is involved

0:39:02 > 0:39:05when somebody takes poorly, and how much it affects your life

0:39:05 > 0:39:08and how much it...affects everybody's life,

0:39:08 > 0:39:10and Dave's and the girls' and how much you have to do.

0:39:10 > 0:39:13Everything's completely opposite to how it used to be,

0:39:13 > 0:39:16I just try and keep things going.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18I'm hoping that he'll get better,

0:39:18 > 0:39:21you've just got to keep hoping, but it is very, very hard.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25I just don't tell anybody. Nobody?

0:39:25 > 0:39:29Well, now and then, when I'm upset, I speak to my friends,

0:39:29 > 0:39:30but I don't let Dave know,

0:39:30 > 0:39:33cos I don't want him to feel like he's a burden.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35Because he's been struck with disability,

0:39:35 > 0:39:38it doesn't mean that you have to close your life down as much as his

0:39:38 > 0:39:42and you don't have to match his disability by creating your own.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45And he obviously loves you a lot. No, I know...

0:39:45 > 0:39:48And if he loves you a lot, then he wouldn't want that either.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51Just sometimes feel guilty, that's all.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55About what? Feel guilty about what? Cos you can go and he can't? Yeah.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00What is it you miss the most?

0:40:03 > 0:40:05SHE GULPS

0:40:07 > 0:40:10SHE SIGHS

0:40:10 > 0:40:12Just the normality.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19You don't appreciate what you've got until it's gone, that's all.

0:40:19 > 0:40:23That's the only way I can explain it. You just don't...

0:40:23 > 0:40:26You just take things for granted - everyone does, I did, everyone does.

0:40:26 > 0:40:31And then, when it's turned upside down, you're like, "Oh, my God!"

0:40:34 > 0:40:37Mm...but we'll be fine.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39You have to find some room for a life of your own, as well.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47I know we can't turn the clock back for Anna,

0:40:47 > 0:40:50but we can give her a home which will give Dave more independence.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54In doing this, I'm hoping Anna can find a way of living her own life,

0:40:54 > 0:40:58with the girls, without the feelings of guilt she's tormented with.

0:41:00 > 0:41:01There's one last feature being fitted

0:41:01 > 0:41:03which will make a massive difference.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08We always make a big deal when these toilets go in,

0:41:08 > 0:41:10because they are a big deal for the people involved.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13And for Dave, in particular, his thing was having that dignity,

0:41:13 > 0:41:15and Anna having to be a carer for him,

0:41:15 > 0:41:17and it makes a big change in their relationship

0:41:17 > 0:41:20that she's having to do all this kind of thing for him now.

0:41:20 > 0:41:24Having the freedom to actually come in and use the loo himself -

0:41:24 > 0:41:27this will wash him and dry him, as well -

0:41:27 > 0:41:30is a huge deal. So, erm...

0:41:30 > 0:41:33One thing this toilet is not is bog-standard -

0:41:33 > 0:41:36it does everything.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38It cleans and dries, and so on, and so forth,

0:41:38 > 0:41:40so it's an amazing thing to go in.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45We're sprinting to the finish now.

0:41:45 > 0:41:47Everything's really starting to come together.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49This wood-burning stove is going in

0:41:49 > 0:41:51to make the living room nice and toasty

0:41:51 > 0:41:54and Charlie's adding some finishing touches to Dave's man cave.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00Earlier on in the week, you said to me you had a dream.

0:42:00 > 0:42:04It was almost like that very famous speech by Martin Luther King.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06His dream was to unite black and white,

0:42:06 > 0:42:09yours was to open a supermarket at some stage. Yeah.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12Well, we thought we might be able to get this dream to come true.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14You wanted a big pair of scissors and a tape.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16Gentlemen, would you like to step across?

0:42:16 > 0:42:18So, what are we opening?

0:42:18 > 0:42:20Your garden.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23Now, all you need now is a big pair of scissors,

0:42:23 > 0:42:26I just happen to have on me - big pair of scissors.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28This means a lot, guys. I'm tearing up here.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31Thank you, guys. You're welcome. Thank you, team.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34We couldn't have done it without you. You've been amazing.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36I now declare this garden...

0:42:36 > 0:42:38SNIP! ..open!

0:42:38 > 0:42:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:42:40 > 0:42:43Come in!

0:42:58 > 0:43:00We arrived here in Warrington to find a family

0:43:00 > 0:43:03trying to make the best of a tragic situation.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07At just 47, Dave's massive stroke had left him living in one room

0:43:07 > 0:43:10with devoted wife, Anna, becoming his full-time carer.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13It isn't right for this once hard-working family

0:43:13 > 0:43:14to live like this.

0:43:14 > 0:43:17It's just really shocking how it could happen to someone,

0:43:17 > 0:43:20just, like, at the click of your fingers,

0:43:20 > 0:43:23someone can just suffer with that, sort of, massive impact

0:43:23 > 0:43:26on their life and everything just changes in one go.

0:43:26 > 0:43:30There's just no way we could ever have attempted

0:43:30 > 0:43:31this amount of work alone

0:43:31 > 0:43:35and it's only due to the monumental effort of the local trades

0:43:35 > 0:43:36that we've done it.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43In just over a week, we've turned this once dysfunctional house

0:43:43 > 0:43:47into the home that will now work far better for the family.

0:43:49 > 0:43:52With Dave trapped downstairs, we've pushed out to the rear

0:43:52 > 0:43:56to give him the living space he so desperately needs.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58The old dining room where Dave was forced to live,

0:43:58 > 0:44:02has been opened up to create this beautiful kitchen-diner

0:44:02 > 0:44:06which is now a space in which the whole family can get together.

0:44:06 > 0:44:08The Shaker-style galley kitchen

0:44:08 > 0:44:11combines simple, elegant lines with a lowered work surface

0:44:11 > 0:44:14to make cooking as easy for possible for Dave to join in.

0:44:16 > 0:44:20This custom-made shelving unit with built-in seating area

0:44:20 > 0:44:22is now the room's magnificent centrepiece.

0:44:24 > 0:44:26The new extension has allowed us

0:44:26 > 0:44:29to create a master bedroom suite for Dave and Anna,

0:44:29 > 0:44:32giving them a chance to sleep in the same bed together

0:44:32 > 0:44:35for the first time since the stroke.

0:44:35 > 0:44:38The bed is fully adjustable for Dave and we've put in these double doors

0:44:38 > 0:44:41for Dave to look out over his garden.

0:44:41 > 0:44:43Above all else, the aim of this build

0:44:43 > 0:44:44was to solve the problem of Dave

0:44:44 > 0:44:47having to wash and use a commode in the kitchen.

0:44:47 > 0:44:51To do this, we've created a wet room with a disability access shower

0:44:51 > 0:44:53and the specialist toilet, which now means

0:44:53 > 0:44:56he doesn't need help from Anna to use the loo.

0:44:57 > 0:45:00The old lounge has been transformed into a relaxing space

0:45:00 > 0:45:04with a cool retro feel where the family can come and relax.

0:45:04 > 0:45:06We've widened the doorway,

0:45:06 > 0:45:09so Dave now has easy access from the kitchen.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12The super-efficient wood burning stove and improved house insulation

0:45:12 > 0:45:16will give the family added warmth through the winter months.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20Emma's room has a classical, yet relaxed, feel,

0:45:20 > 0:45:24which is very much in keeping with the period of the house,

0:45:24 > 0:45:28whilst Amy's room is finished in soft green tones,

0:45:28 > 0:45:32offset with simple, but timeless, bedroom furniture.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Charlie told me to say that.

0:45:34 > 0:45:37And the third bedroom has been designed as a place for Anna

0:45:37 > 0:45:40to come to relax when she needs a moment on her own.

0:45:40 > 0:45:43The old family bathroom has now been completely refurbished

0:45:43 > 0:45:45with these cool subway tiles.

0:45:48 > 0:45:51Dave was cut off from his old garden

0:45:51 > 0:45:53which has now been completely re-designed,

0:45:53 > 0:45:57and I must say, Charlie's done a brilliant job.

0:45:57 > 0:45:59The new space is totally wheelchair-friendly,

0:45:59 > 0:46:02so he can move around independently.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04We've put in this raised bed to grow veg,

0:46:04 > 0:46:08and it's finished off with the stunning cedar-clad room

0:46:08 > 0:46:11with greenhouse area for Dave to potter to his heart's content.

0:46:11 > 0:46:15The real challenge of this build was to give the family

0:46:15 > 0:46:17a home in which he has more independence,

0:46:17 > 0:46:21which, in turn, will take the pressure off his wife -

0:46:21 > 0:46:24somewhere which will allow Dave to face the future with dignity,

0:46:24 > 0:46:27and give Anna the space she so desperately needs.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32OK, so, if you're ready. Yeah.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35One, two, three! Look up!

0:46:35 > 0:46:38Oh, my God...

0:46:38 > 0:46:40God...

0:46:40 > 0:46:43It's unusual for us to show you the outside of a house first,

0:46:43 > 0:46:46but the important thing is about access,

0:46:46 > 0:46:48so we wanted to make sure that you could drive in,

0:46:48 > 0:46:50that you could get out,

0:46:50 > 0:46:54and as you can see, the ground very gently leads up to the front door.

0:46:54 > 0:46:56It's a new front door which is wider than it was,

0:46:56 > 0:46:58so you don't have the problems getting in and out.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01It's just unbelievable, it's very nice. It's brilliant, yeah.

0:47:01 > 0:47:04Shall we go and have a look? Oh, my God, it's just so easy.

0:47:07 > 0:47:09God...

0:47:09 > 0:47:12It really, really is beautiful. Oh, my God.

0:47:12 > 0:47:15From the moment you come in through the front door and off the pathway,

0:47:15 > 0:47:17everything is level throughout.

0:47:17 > 0:47:19That first day, I was wrestling you around the corner.

0:47:19 > 0:47:23I struggled getting him through the doors. I had to lift the wheelchair

0:47:23 > 0:47:25and it hurt me back and that, but, yeah, it's a...

0:47:25 > 0:47:28It's part of the reason you ended up in one room,

0:47:28 > 0:47:30because you just couldn't move. I couldn't do it, yeah.

0:47:30 > 0:47:32Oh, it's lovely. Thanks very much.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35So, shall we go in and see the front room, first of all? Yeah.

0:47:35 > 0:47:38Oh, God. Yeah. Here we go.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45There we go. In you come.

0:47:45 > 0:47:47I don't believe it!

0:47:47 > 0:47:49Oh, it's just...my God! Dave!

0:47:51 > 0:47:53You like it? Yeah, I love it, I love it!

0:47:53 > 0:47:55It's just so different, it's unbelievable.

0:47:55 > 0:47:56HE SIGHS

0:47:58 > 0:48:02Brilliant. Dave, look! How did you know I wanted one of them?

0:48:02 > 0:48:07You got your fire. I have. You didn't even know, did you?

0:48:07 > 0:48:09That's beautiful, that, just in the right place and all.

0:48:09 > 0:48:11Have we done all right with the room?

0:48:11 > 0:48:13Oh, it's beautiful, thank you. Really is.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15I couldn't ask for anything more, it's fantastic.

0:48:15 > 0:48:17We've got another room to show you,

0:48:17 > 0:48:19so we'll turn you around in here

0:48:19 > 0:48:21and then get you out through that door.

0:48:25 > 0:48:26DAVE LAUGHS

0:48:26 > 0:48:28Oh, my God...

0:48:31 > 0:48:34It's fantastic. Can't believe it.

0:48:35 > 0:48:38Beautiful, ain't it? It is. It's lovely, it really is.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44OK, let's move on down through your kitchen space here.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47I just can't believe I can get you about so easy!

0:48:47 > 0:48:50If you just push on a little bit further,

0:48:50 > 0:48:52you can tuck underneath there.

0:48:52 > 0:48:55Oh, yeah, you can do some cooking! Oh, yeah!

0:48:55 > 0:48:58You'll be able to do chopping, get involved with the cooking.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00Cos you like doing that, don't you?

0:49:00 > 0:49:02You can prep stuff and have somebody else chef,

0:49:02 > 0:49:03so you're involved with it.

0:49:04 > 0:49:06You've got two doors in front of you

0:49:06 > 0:49:09and the door to your right is where I think we should go next.

0:49:09 > 0:49:12What do you reckon is through there? Um, bedroom.

0:49:16 > 0:49:19Yeah. Ready to see this? Yeah. Right, let's go.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30Gosh. Is this my bedroom?

0:49:30 > 0:49:33I don't believe it!

0:49:33 > 0:49:35Oh, it's beautiful.

0:49:35 > 0:49:36It really is.

0:49:38 > 0:49:43It really is. You're not in the kitchen any more. No.

0:49:43 > 0:49:44You're not in the kitchen no more.

0:49:44 > 0:49:46It's really, really nice.

0:49:46 > 0:49:50Thank you, it's beautiful. It just doesn't seem real. It just...

0:49:50 > 0:49:54I knew you was good, but I didn't know you was this good.

0:49:54 > 0:49:55I really didn't.

0:49:55 > 0:49:59It's all the builders and suppliers around here that are this good.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02There's enough room for you to get the chair around the side there,

0:50:02 > 0:50:05this side of the bed is a hospital bed,

0:50:05 > 0:50:07this side, a standard bed.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09You want it to be effective,

0:50:09 > 0:50:11it's got to work for you with a disability.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14But you don't want it to look like a hospital bed

0:50:14 > 0:50:17and you don't want it to look like a hospital room, or a disability room.

0:50:17 > 0:50:19It doesn't look like that. There is nothing about this...

0:50:19 > 0:50:21No, it doesn't look like it at all. It's beautiful.

0:50:21 > 0:50:25I can't wait until my first night's sleep in there, you know?

0:50:25 > 0:50:29I really can't. So, we need one more thing. What are we missing?

0:50:29 > 0:50:32Bathroom. Yes.

0:50:32 > 0:50:34Toilet. OK, let's go and have a look.

0:50:42 > 0:50:43God...

0:50:46 > 0:50:48Oh, you've got a toilet, Dave.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51More than a toilet, if you don't mind me saying so.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54This is the all-singing, all-dancing look-after-yourself toilet.

0:50:54 > 0:50:57Once that you're on it, you can be left alone.

0:50:57 > 0:51:01So I don't have to ask for my wife to come and...? Fantastic!

0:51:01 > 0:51:03Honestly...

0:51:03 > 0:51:05HE SNIFFLES

0:51:05 > 0:51:06It's brilliant, that.

0:51:08 > 0:51:09That is fantastic.

0:51:12 > 0:51:17As a man, you don't want your wife to do any of that, you really don't.

0:51:17 > 0:51:21It's just not right. So what you've done is fantastic.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25This room seems to have hit you more than any of the others, really.

0:51:25 > 0:51:30Yeah, because I was doing things that I shouldn't be doing,

0:51:30 > 0:51:33if you know what I mean - I appreciate everything,

0:51:33 > 0:51:35but this, this was hard...

0:51:35 > 0:51:38I know it sounds really awful, but it was really hard.

0:51:38 > 0:51:43To go from husband and wife to carer is the toughest thing...

0:51:43 > 0:51:45And not get it back, that's the thing,

0:51:45 > 0:51:47you can't pull it back.

0:51:47 > 0:51:50I think, with what you've done here, you've pulled it back for us

0:51:50 > 0:51:52to give us another chance.

0:51:52 > 0:51:56Not "another chance", but just to live life a bit better now.

0:51:56 > 0:51:59That's what I mean, if that makes sense? Yeah.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02And I think that's what you've done, and I can't thank you enough.

0:52:05 > 0:52:11Plainly, we've made access all areas downstairs really easy for you.

0:52:11 > 0:52:13But we can't access you upstairs

0:52:13 > 0:52:15and we've done a bit for the rooms upstairs for the girls as well.

0:52:15 > 0:52:18So I want to show the girls but not on their own,

0:52:18 > 0:52:21And we talked about getting Mum and daughters together.

0:52:21 > 0:52:23So, I wondered if I borrowed Anna? Yeah, sure.

0:52:23 > 0:52:26But I don't want to leave you downstairs. No, I'll be fine here.

0:52:26 > 0:52:27I'm not leaving you on your own,

0:52:27 > 0:52:30so we thought we'd get some company for you. In you come, lads.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33I don't know if you know these two at all, but, um...

0:52:33 > 0:52:36Absolutely fantastic. How you doing?

0:52:39 > 0:52:41Can't thank you enough, Garry. Don't worry, mate.

0:52:44 > 0:52:46HE SOBS

0:52:49 > 0:52:51Shall we leave him with Garry and Ray? They can catch up,

0:52:51 > 0:52:54and we'll go and get the girls and see what they think.

0:52:57 > 0:52:59What do you think, mate? It's fantastic!

0:53:06 > 0:53:08There's a bit of a change here,

0:53:08 > 0:53:11cos we've changed the rooms around a little bit.

0:53:11 > 0:53:14But also, I know you're going to need, occasionally,

0:53:14 > 0:53:17to not be downstairs and have a space away, so what we've done

0:53:17 > 0:53:21is we've made the room in front of you an extra room,

0:53:21 > 0:53:22either as a guest room

0:53:22 > 0:53:25or a room that you can stay in, sometimes, if you need to. OK.

0:53:25 > 0:53:27So, we're going in through that door next.

0:53:30 > 0:53:32Oh, that's really nice.

0:53:32 > 0:53:33God...

0:53:34 > 0:53:37It is relaxing in here, isn't it?

0:53:37 > 0:53:40So, it's a little room, it was always going to be a little room,

0:53:40 > 0:53:44but it's a...if you want an escape, room.

0:53:44 > 0:53:47It's lovely, isn't it, Mum? Yeah.

0:53:48 > 0:53:52I like the colours. Don't! You'll set me off, stop it!

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Thank you. No, it's fine.

0:53:54 > 0:53:56No, it's just, for understanding, really.

0:53:59 > 0:54:03You know, cos it's very hard when you're not involved in it all,

0:54:03 > 0:54:05and I try to put a brave face on all the time...

0:54:05 > 0:54:07Well, we've talked about that.

0:54:07 > 0:54:11We've talked about you feeling guilty when you go out and enjoy yourself,

0:54:11 > 0:54:13and you've got to stop, because you should go out

0:54:13 > 0:54:14and everybody thinks that.

0:54:14 > 0:54:18The girls think that. It was a lot of what we were talking about?

0:54:18 > 0:54:20We've told him how we try and tell you,

0:54:20 > 0:54:23but you just don't listen, so maybe you'll listen to Nick.

0:54:23 > 0:54:25ALL LAUGH

0:54:29 > 0:54:31Oh, my God...

0:54:31 > 0:54:33It's really lovely.

0:54:35 > 0:54:38Sorry!

0:54:38 > 0:54:39It's really, really lovely.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50Oh, it's really nice! Beautiful, isn't it? Yeah.

0:54:55 > 0:54:56Everyone's gone the extra mile

0:54:56 > 0:54:59to make sure that every part of it is finished off beautifully.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02A lot of that is due to the fact that there's guys that know your dad

0:55:02 > 0:55:05and know what a great guy he is and wanted to do this for him,

0:55:05 > 0:55:06and for the family, too.

0:55:06 > 0:55:08And a lot of other people who know you as a family,

0:55:08 > 0:55:11and you're well-loved as a family, it's a great community around here.

0:55:11 > 0:55:13It's overwhelming, really. Yeah.

0:55:13 > 0:55:16Come on, let's get you downstairs to your dad, then.

0:55:22 > 0:55:26I don't believe it, it's fantastic.

0:55:26 > 0:55:29Wow. I wasn't expecting this.

0:55:29 > 0:55:31Oh, Dave, and your bedroom.

0:55:31 > 0:55:34I know. Cos you've always said you wanted a view from your room.

0:55:34 > 0:55:36It's fantastic.

0:55:36 > 0:55:40Oh, you can grow your own things. Oh, yeah.

0:55:40 > 0:55:41Oh, that's lovely.

0:55:41 > 0:55:44Like a summer house, I think. Yeah.

0:55:45 > 0:55:47It's kind of more than a summer house.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50It's insulated, it has electricity in here, there's an area to work,

0:55:50 > 0:55:52there's a TV, so you can be out here, if you want.

0:55:52 > 0:55:54That's fantastic, that.

0:55:54 > 0:55:56It's a potting shed on the end that you can grow things.

0:55:56 > 0:55:58You've got some herbs at the moment.

0:56:00 > 0:56:03This is fantastic - you should take it up.

0:56:03 > 0:56:06Is that right? It's not me.

0:56:06 > 0:56:08Let's go and meet some of the people who put the work in

0:56:08 > 0:56:11and see if you can say a few words to them? I can, yes.

0:56:11 > 0:56:13Come on, then, let's go.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19APPLAUSE

0:56:19 > 0:56:20Thank you.

0:56:29 > 0:56:30Cracking job.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35What I'd like to say is, it's...

0:56:35 > 0:56:39With me stroke, it's been hard for me,

0:56:39 > 0:56:43but I've got to say, what you've done for us in this house

0:56:43 > 0:56:46over these nine days, is fantastic.

0:56:46 > 0:56:49Each one of you, I want to shake you by the hand

0:56:49 > 0:56:54cos you've done a fantastic job - I'm proud to know you as my workmen.

0:56:54 > 0:56:57Any time you want to knock on the door

0:56:57 > 0:56:58for a cup of tea, just knock on.

0:56:58 > 0:57:01I think there's about 200 of them! LAUGHTER

0:57:01 > 0:57:02Have you got enough mugs?

0:57:02 > 0:57:04It's fantastic, and again,

0:57:04 > 0:57:06I can't put it into words what you've done for us.

0:57:06 > 0:57:09I'd also like to mention whilst I'm here to all the...

0:57:09 > 0:57:13All the people who looked after me over the last 18 months,

0:57:13 > 0:57:16cos I can tell you, if it wasn't for them, I might not be here now,

0:57:16 > 0:57:18because it was that close.

0:57:18 > 0:57:20And, um...

0:57:20 > 0:57:22I really can't thank you enough.

0:57:22 > 0:57:26But I say, to all you workers here,

0:57:26 > 0:57:28you all deserve a ten.

0:57:28 > 0:57:31And I mean that from the bottom of my heart, you all need ten.

0:57:31 > 0:57:33APPLAUSE

0:57:41 > 0:57:42Thank you.

0:57:49 > 0:57:50Come and say hello.

0:57:55 > 0:57:57CHATTER

0:58:04 > 0:58:08When a family member comes down with an illness this serious,

0:58:08 > 0:58:12it puts unimaginable pressure on the family unit.

0:58:12 > 0:58:14And it seems unfair to me that those people who are trying

0:58:14 > 0:58:18to battle their illness are also becoming isolated and imprisoned

0:58:18 > 0:58:20in their own homes for want of better facilities.

0:58:20 > 0:58:24As a nation, we should be able to do something about that

0:58:24 > 0:58:26so that they can concentrate on getting well.

0:58:26 > 0:58:29These people thought it was unfair for Dave and his family to have

0:58:29 > 0:58:32to deal with all that, so they came and did something about it.

0:58:32 > 0:58:35Maybe you know somebody who needs your help.

0:58:40 > 0:58:43Thanks for doing the electrics.

0:58:43 > 0:58:46ALL LAUGH

0:58:46 > 0:58:48It's amazing, yeah.

0:58:48 > 0:58:49..can get about downstairs.

0:59:00 > 0:59:02I did the driveway for you. Did you?

0:59:05 > 0:59:06You're welcome.

0:59:10 > 0:59:11Did the 1966 World Cup

0:59:11 > 0:59:14mark the birth of modern football?

0:59:14 > 0:59:16Would we starve without bees?

0:59:16 > 0:59:18Why do Buddhists meditate?

0:59:18 > 0:59:21Is rocket science easier than you think?
