0:00:02 > 0:00:06This is a story about a family staying strong for each other.

0:00:06 > 0:00:07I stay positive about this

0:00:07 > 0:00:13because there's no point looking at life as a downside

0:00:13 > 0:00:18because you only live once, and I may as well live happily.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21But they've endured 14 tough years

0:00:21 > 0:00:24because of a rare and debilitating condition.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28It's the hardest thing in the world when your child asks you,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30"Am I going to come round after the op?

0:00:30 > 0:00:32"Please don't let me die, Mum."

0:00:32 > 0:00:34It absolutely destroys you.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38Their home is totally unsuitable for a disabled teenager,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40and it's adding to the pressure.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Most of the time, he's never seen me falling apart,

0:00:44 > 0:00:48but the times when you shut the door and you have a good cry

0:00:48 > 0:00:52and you do think to yourself, "Do you know what? Why me? Why Jack?"

0:00:53 > 0:00:55And I don't know, "Why Jack?"

0:00:55 > 0:00:59And that still kills me, to think, "Why Jack?"

0:00:59 > 0:01:04Cos no child deserves what he's been through.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11We've got nine days to give them the house they need.

0:01:11 > 0:01:12It's not going to be easy.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Mark? The walls are just crumbling to bits up here.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19We're nearly at finish. We don't need that,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21we don't need that to happen now.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23TOOL BUZZES

0:01:23 > 0:01:27We're in Swansea, described by Dylan Thomas as "An ugly, lovely town".

0:01:29 > 0:01:32All the usual suspects are here, and that's taken care of the ugly,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and our designer this week is the fragrant Gabrielle, but

0:01:34 > 0:01:37we need an army of lovely people. Where are we going to find them?

0:01:37 > 0:01:38How about this lot?

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- Yeah, they look good. - ALL:- Yay!

0:01:41 > 0:01:43- Up for helping us out? - ALL:- Yes!

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Yes, it's DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:45 > 0:01:46CHEERING

0:02:01 > 0:02:04So we're here to help single mother Helen Morris and her two boys,

0:02:04 > 0:02:0821-year-old Daniel and 14-year-old Jack.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11They live in this three-bedroomed semi, which has been

0:02:11 > 0:02:13the family home for 26 years.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Helen works part-time at the local Job Centre

0:02:17 > 0:02:21while son Daniel is a full-time administrator.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Daniel's the first grandson in the family.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27A lot of girls in our family, my sister had two daughters,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29ten girl cousins, so Daniel was very spoilt

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and we were thrilled to have him

0:02:31 > 0:02:33so when I was found out I was having another one

0:02:33 > 0:02:36everybody was absolutely delighted as well.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Just wanted a lovely, beautiful, young man

0:02:39 > 0:02:41like I had the first time around.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44But soon after her second son Jack was born,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Helen noticed something was wrong.

0:02:48 > 0:02:53He didn't sit up like a normal child or crawl like a normal child.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56And as a mum, you do know. And I did.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01And I pushed and pushed with the doctors, and then finally somebody

0:03:01 > 0:03:07listened to him, and within a week he was referred to a consultant.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10Tests revealed that Jack's hips were out of their sockets.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15He was put in traction and he was upside-down in a cot

0:03:15 > 0:03:18and both his legs were attached to a rope, and every day

0:03:18 > 0:03:20they sort of stretched the rope a little bit

0:03:20 > 0:03:23until after the ten days then his hips had stretched enough

0:03:23 > 0:03:24ready for the operation.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28You think at the time that was quite a difficult time

0:03:28 > 0:03:31but as time has gone on it's like he's been through a lot worse,

0:03:31 > 0:03:33a lot worse.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Doctors discovered that Jack was suffering with a rare form

0:03:37 > 0:03:39of muscular dystrophy,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41so rare it only affects one in a million people.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46The condition makes the muscles in the top of the legs, hips

0:03:46 > 0:03:48and back really weak, and in severe cases

0:03:48 > 0:03:51causes scoliosis, or curvature of the spine.

0:03:52 > 0:03:57By the age of seven, his curve in the spine was 37 degrees, and

0:03:57 > 0:04:03within three months it went to 90, so basically his spine collapsed.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Jack has had 19 operations in his short life,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10but the biggest operation came just 12 months ago, when he was fitted

0:04:10 > 0:04:15with halo and pelvic traction, in an attempt to straighten his spine.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19I couldn't move then from my neck to my hips.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I was staying stuck in one position.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26Every time I had to stand up you could feel the pins moving in me.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29It was really painful and I was getting infection after infection.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33He used to say to me, "Oh, Mam, please just get the doctor

0:04:33 > 0:04:35"and just tell him to get it off me."

0:04:35 > 0:04:37And Jack's never been a quitter in his life,

0:04:37 > 0:04:38but he was in so much pain.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41And there was times when we were in hospital,

0:04:41 > 0:04:42he looked at me as if he hated me.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47I do hope one day he realises that I've done it

0:04:47 > 0:04:52for all the right reasons, just to give him the best chance in life.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57After nine months in traction, Jack had a final operation

0:04:57 > 0:05:00to permanently fuse the vertebrae of his spine together.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Every operation is life-threatening for Jack

0:05:05 > 0:05:09because his condition makes him an anaesthetic risk.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Well, for the last two years he knows what's coming,

0:05:14 > 0:05:16and that's the hardest thing in the world

0:05:16 > 0:05:18when your child is asking you

0:05:18 > 0:05:20"Am I going to come round after the op?

0:05:20 > 0:05:23"Please don't let me die, Mam." Absolutely destroys you.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30Surgeons have stabilised Jack's condition,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32but he is unable to walk on his own.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Now the house is hampering his recovery.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Morning, Jack, time for school.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43He's been forced to sleep in the lounge

0:05:43 > 0:05:45and hasn't been able to use his front door for years.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Jack is very reliant on me at the moment.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54And it's not ideal, he's frustrated.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58I mean, he can't get up the stairs, can't go into his own bedroom.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01As soon as I get out of bed, my mum gives me a wash,

0:06:01 > 0:06:05cos it's hard for me to walk into the bathroom,

0:06:05 > 0:06:08and as I can't sit as low as a normal toilet,

0:06:08 > 0:06:13I have to have a commode in there, so that takes up even more room.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18You don't want your mum bathing you, you don't want your mum taking you

0:06:18 > 0:06:21to the toilet, you don't want your mum helping you clean your teeth.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24It's something that needs to be done and I'm sure most mums would do it.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30Big brother Daniel has witnessed Jack's struggle first-hand.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33I think that Jack feels that sometimes that he'd love to be able

0:06:33 > 0:06:36to do things himself rather than ask my mum, just to give

0:06:36 > 0:06:37her a bit of a break.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39He knows that there are certain things he can and can't do

0:06:39 > 0:06:42and the things he can't do, he's always reliant on my mother.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47And with Jack's bed and equipment taking up most of the living area,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Daniel is spending more time away from the family home.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Since Jack has had to move all his stuff downstairs with his bed

0:06:55 > 0:06:58and everything, now there isn't much room for my mates to come round

0:06:58 > 0:07:02at all, so at the moment these days we either tend to go out

0:07:02 > 0:07:05to one of my mates' houses or just go out all together.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Nobody really comes round here any more.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Daniel is, of course, very understanding of his brother,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13but the situation with the house is pushing them apart

0:07:13 > 0:07:17and it's taking its toll on Helen, too.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Most of the time he's never seen me falling apart,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23but the times when you shut the door and you have a good cry

0:07:23 > 0:07:26and you do think to yourself, "Do you know what, why me? Why Jack?"

0:07:27 > 0:07:30And I don't know why Jack?

0:07:30 > 0:07:33And that still kills me to think, "Why Jack?"

0:07:33 > 0:07:37Cos no child

0:07:37 > 0:07:39deserves what he's been through.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44It's going to take a very big build to bring this family back together.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47So what do you fancy, then, Jack? What are we going to do in there?

0:07:47 > 0:07:51I'd like it to be accessible for me really downstairs

0:07:51 > 0:07:54so I'll be able to move around freely in my frame.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57And what about a bit of space maybe for you and your brother

0:07:57 > 0:07:59to spend some time together?

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Yeah, we haven't really been able to spend time together

0:08:01 > 0:08:04because the bed has been in the dining room, so it would be nice

0:08:04 > 0:08:08to have like a family meal together on our dining table.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Dan spends time in his room, as well, and it would be nice

0:08:11 > 0:08:13if we can all sit together.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17That's the difficulty, though. With Jack living in the lounge it hasn't been a home for you at all?

0:08:17 > 0:08:19No, it has been really hard. I mean, we can't really use

0:08:19 > 0:08:21the living room as much as we wanted to.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25Jack's got so much equipment and everything there's no room to do anything.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28Are you surprised, pleased, nervous about everybody turning up

0:08:28 > 0:08:29and getting involved?

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Absolutely, just like a dream come true, honestly.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34It doesn't happen to people like us.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36We're still really shellshocked.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40As usual the family are moving out and handing over their keys

0:08:40 > 0:08:42and precious home to us,

0:08:42 > 0:08:46and who wouldn't entrust their home to this beautiful bunch(?)

0:08:46 > 0:08:49We thought it might be nice for you to meet the family.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53- This is Jack, and Daniel and Helen. - How are you doing?

0:08:53 > 0:08:56These are the guys that we're working for this week. What do you need us to do?

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Anything at all, we'd be very grateful and thank you all very much.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03It's going to be totally life-changing for us.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Well, wait and see what they do first, they might be rubbish.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09I wouldn't even mind if was painting the walls, honestly.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I think we'll do a bit more than paint the walls.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14So if you'd like to make your way off.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17- We'll catch-up with you later. Thanks very much, guys. - Thank you everyone, ta-ra.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22So here we go, then. It's day one of the build

0:09:22 > 0:09:25and we have, in the next few days, to build a large single-storey

0:09:25 > 0:09:28extension and totally renovate the house and garden.

0:09:28 > 0:09:29That's all right, then.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31A bit more ventilation, boys.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35Which is always nice when you've got a lot of sweaty builders in a small room.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37And don't think I'm being disparaging, this thing only

0:09:37 > 0:09:41works if we all pull together and work as a team and do it my way.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43When we do a big extension like this we have to put

0:09:43 > 0:09:47the pad down early, so there's a week and a half's work gone on here

0:09:47 > 0:09:50and, as a result, there's a huge amount of earth banked up at the back there,

0:09:50 > 0:09:53which now needs to be got out, about 20 tonne, we reckon.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56You'll find there's plasterers, chippies and electricians

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and all kinds of people in there trying to barrow the stuff out.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03Is it looking good, boys?

0:10:03 > 0:10:08- It's looking marvellous. - Looking lovely. Tidy! - Marvellous, isn't it?

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Lovely Welsh accents, lovely Welsh accents.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12- WELSH ACCENT:- Lovely!

0:10:12 > 0:10:16I'm allowed to do that. I grew up around Merthyr. There's something not so lovely waiting outside.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- I've got a little test for you. - Oh, yeah?

0:10:19 > 0:10:21I want you to close your eyes and feel something.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23You've tried that once, I'm not doing that again.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25No, no, it's nothing rude, I want you to feel something

0:10:25 > 0:10:27- and you tell me what it is.- OK.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Oh! That is something rude.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Oh!

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Urgh! What's going on?

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Ooh!- I slipped over and I think I've cracked a bone.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42- It's started coming up a bit.- Show me your other elbow for comparison.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Oh, it's all blobby, isn't it? It's all... Oh!

0:10:44 > 0:10:47I think it needs an X-ray to find out what's erm...

0:10:47 > 0:10:48What's causing it.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Or maybe some insect has planted eggs in there and it's currently growing.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54- You toddle off cos I'm feeling... - Would you mind if I shoot off?

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- No, you go to hospital as soon as possible.- I feel sick now looking at that.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Man down already, that wasn't part of the plan.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Talking of which, does anyone know the plan?

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Ah, this woman looks like she might know what she's talking about.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Yes, it's the flame-haired lovely with a flair for design

0:11:09 > 0:11:12and a passion for all things great. It's Gabrielle Blackman.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16So what's this about the three business going through this house?

0:11:16 > 0:11:19Well, Jack's now 14 so before you know it you're going to have three

0:11:19 > 0:11:24adults living in this house and the most important thing is getting

0:11:24 > 0:11:27enough social space for them because at the moment they have none.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Both individually and together.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Thank you, Nick.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- It would have been lovely with slightly less sarcasm.- No, I'm...

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Why do you hate this bit so much? - I don't hate this bit, this is important.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43- I'm just...- This is important to translate your vision to the viewer

0:11:43 > 0:11:48cos she writes to me every now and again and tells she doesn't get it.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50So let me explain Gabrielle's design,

0:11:50 > 0:11:53it's all about independence for Jack and space for the family.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56We demolish the old kitchen and bathroom to make way

0:11:56 > 0:11:59for a large single-storey extension.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01There it goes.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04This will house the first of three shared spaces,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06a large open-plan kitchen-diner.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Then there will also be a bedroom for Jack with en suite

0:12:09 > 0:12:12wet room, giving him independence and space to grow into a man.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16The old living space is being subtly reconfigured to create

0:12:16 > 0:12:20two further shared spaces, cosy lounge and an adjoining study.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23The hallway and doors will be widened

0:12:23 > 0:12:25and an all-new wheelchair ramp at the front of the house

0:12:25 > 0:12:29will give Jack access via his front door for the first time in years!

0:12:30 > 0:12:31Let's move upstairs.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Jack's old bedroom will become a new family bathroom

0:12:34 > 0:12:37and there are bedrooms for Helen and Daniel.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43One of the things I find most touching about talking to Jack

0:12:43 > 0:12:46is that he's so aware the impact of his condition

0:12:46 > 0:12:49on everybody around him, and he's got such a...

0:12:49 > 0:12:52And again it's going back to this burden and this guilt

0:12:52 > 0:12:55that he feels for the sacrifices everybody is making for him.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57And that relationship with his mum has been very close

0:12:57 > 0:13:00but he is going to want space on his own as he gets older.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03He's worried about his mum, he's worried about his mum's back.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05She's been physically carrying him around for all these years.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08We're giving her her own bathroom, it's going to be really beautiful.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12- I understand that's quite important to a woman.- It is very important.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16What is it about the bathing moment that is such a big deal?

0:13:16 > 0:13:19It's just, frankly, an excuse to be on your own for five minutes.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- Oh, is that what it is?- Yeah.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Is that a bit like when I go and sit on the throne for 20 minutes,

0:13:24 > 0:13:26it's that time on your own.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27Do you see what I mean?

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Every woman now is saying it's so we don't have to listen to that

0:13:30 > 0:13:32for about an hour. That's why you go into a nice bath.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37You've got to love the Welsh sense of community.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40We've got 80 tradespeople here today, all just mucking in together.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41Of course, I'm part Welsh, you know.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43All right, Auntie Sheila and Uncle Fred?

0:13:43 > 0:13:45I'll be up to see you later on.

0:13:45 > 0:13:46Isn't it?

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Do you know any Welsh?

0:13:48 > 0:13:50I just did it - "isn't it?"

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Oh!

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- That's my full Welsh repertoire. - Oh, all right.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Is it? Isn't it? Is it? Isn't it?

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Thinking about it, I probably should work on my Welsh repertoire.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05Meanwhile, I think Gabrielle needs to work on her decision making.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06What's happened to the porch way?

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Well, we took it down because it wasn't working at all

0:14:09 > 0:14:11and now we're making a new one.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17- Hang on, you took down a perfectly good porch... - It wasn't perfectly good.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21..because you didn't like having the porch and when you took it off you realised you wanted one?

0:14:21 > 0:14:26No, it wasn't I didn't like having a porch, I didn't like having that specific one.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28It's going to be exactly the same, isn't it?

0:14:28 > 0:14:30I need to think about it because it's someone house.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33If I make thoughtless, thought-free decisions.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Surely they could also be described as incisive decisions?

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Well, not if they're the wrong ones.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42I need to think. I need two flipping minutes to think whether it's the wrong or the right decision.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Do you want me to try and draw something?

0:14:44 > 0:14:46No, and you're not allowed anywhere near any of this.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50She's getting quite tense, isn't she?

0:14:50 > 0:14:52So we're a man down without Chris, and Gabrielle is making extra work

0:14:52 > 0:14:56for us but at least we've shifted the 20 tonnes of soil from the

0:14:56 > 0:15:00back of the house and we're ready to start work on the landscaping.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Gabrielle has mirrored her plan of creating

0:15:02 > 0:15:04three social spaces in the garden, too.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Low-threshold double doors from the kitchen-diner

0:15:07 > 0:15:10and Jack's bedroom lead out onto a paved terrace.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12An access ramp then heads to a larger space

0:15:12 > 0:15:14for entertaining family and friends.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Finally we're creating a garden room for Jack and Daniel,

0:15:17 > 0:15:20an all-weather space for them to hang out as brothers,

0:15:20 > 0:15:22giving Helen some respite.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25If this works it's going to be brilliant.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30But even the best-laid plans can come unstuck.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34Nobody accounted for this tree stump exactly where the garden room

0:15:34 > 0:15:36needs to go and it's not shifting for man or machine.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42What I'm really stressed about is the garden room takes up the whole of this length.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Yeah, what's wrong with that?

0:15:44 > 0:15:47And we've got a flipping massive great big stump here.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49The best thing to do with that is a stump grinder.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52- Have you ever seen a stump grinder at work?- I haven't.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54- It's a proper big boy's toy. - It makes a bit of a mess.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- Lovely, isn't it? - So does it just...?

0:15:57 > 0:16:01It just grinds it and flicks the sawdust all over the place.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Hang on a second, I know we know we need a stump grinder,

0:16:04 > 0:16:07but where are we going to find one that's the point?

0:16:07 > 0:16:10It's a specialist bit of kit and we need it today

0:16:10 > 0:16:14if we stand a chance of building the garden room for Jack and Daniel on time.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17It is a crucial space, it's where the boys will be able

0:16:17 > 0:16:20to hang out together as brothers and that's important.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Tell me about your relationship with your brother?

0:16:22 > 0:16:25My brother is like a best friend to me.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28He just tries his best to help me.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30He helps me with my work.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33He plays me on the Xbox.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Erm, we spend time in the living room together

0:16:36 > 0:16:40but because he plays... He's very sporty and I'm not.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44I can't play football with him so I'm just stuck watching him, really.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48Where do you think you get that sort of strength from cos not everybody deals with it so well?

0:16:48 > 0:16:52My mother's really strong and she's always there next to me.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56I think the genes have come from her to be strong-hearted, really.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59That's very cool.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01She's a fighter ,your mum, isn't she?

0:17:01 > 0:17:03And you've a very close relationship?

0:17:03 > 0:17:05I think it is closer than many other people because

0:17:05 > 0:17:08the amount of time I've spent in hospital over the last years

0:17:08 > 0:17:11and she's always been there next to me

0:17:11 > 0:17:13and she didn't really miss a night, really.

0:17:15 > 0:17:20And I know over that we have made a really big bond.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23It is really bad the way...

0:17:23 > 0:17:27the way it affects them because they all have to really spend

0:17:27 > 0:17:30their time around me, and Mum

0:17:30 > 0:17:33has spent most of her time around me and

0:17:33 > 0:17:35might have pushed Dan out a little bit

0:17:35 > 0:17:37but Dan has got on with that brilliantly.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40It's clear that Jack and Daniel love each other very much

0:17:40 > 0:17:43but the situation with the house is getting in the way of them

0:17:43 > 0:17:47enjoying quality time together as brothers.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Back at the building, things are looking up.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54The walls of the timber frame extension are up

0:17:54 > 0:17:56and our injured soldier has returned.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Here he is, he's back.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03- Oh, it's still there. - It's still there exactly the same.

0:18:03 > 0:18:04Apparently it's not angry.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Will you hold that, please.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10Did it turn out to be a hernia that had gone a very long way?

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Apparently...

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Have you broken something.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17I've got student's elbow, check me out.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19- You've got student's elbow.- Yeah.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21How does that work, then?

0:18:21 > 0:18:23- What's student's elbow?- That.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25That's mainly from doing that all day, isn't it?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28"I'm feeling sad about myself, I haven't got a girlfriend."

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Did they laugh at you when they told you you had student's elbow?

0:18:31 > 0:18:35- A little bit.- You haven't been a student in your life! - That's what I said to her.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37- But he is a student of life. - Yes.- I see.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41See, we're very supportive, which is just as well because Gabrielle is breaking the house.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45Mark! The walls are just crumbling to bits up here.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47This is his supportive face.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49Where is she? What's the problem?

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Well, it's all just coming off, my darling.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56It's coming off the walls like that. I know I'm incredibly strong but...

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Right, we're going to have to rip all the walls out. We can't do anything with that.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Are you all right on that? Get these walls stripped.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04If the studs are rubbish, we'll build new studs.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07I'd quite like us to stop finding new things to do.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10We're going to need more man power and woman power, in actual fact.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13Go to it, our Titian strawberry blonde buddy.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Now surely something is going to go right today,

0:19:17 > 0:19:19I can feel it in me waters.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26We have a stump grinder!

0:19:26 > 0:19:28What a bit of kit.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29Whoo-hoo!

0:19:30 > 0:19:34And, as I expected, Gabrielle is duly impressed with the grinding.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Look at that, very happy.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Oh, a lovely bit of kit that, ain't it?

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Proper savage piece of equipment.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43- Who me?- Yes, you.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47So were you grinding somewhere else when we called you?

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Yeah, yeah, we've abandoned a job for this...

0:19:50 > 0:19:53- For this project. - Was it a big stump, was it?

0:19:54 > 0:19:56- Erm, it was bigger than that.- Is it?

0:19:56 > 0:19:59It's about that size now but it was that size when we started.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03Do you know what? He's just one of many who've given up paid work to come and help.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Lovely, lovely people... So why do they do it?

0:20:08 > 0:20:11We've all got families. I've got a 14-year-old boy the same age as Jack.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14When I heard the story that really did sort of hit home

0:20:14 > 0:20:17because you realise how fortunate you are with your own kids

0:20:17 > 0:20:20and for what's Jack's been through, and meeting him the other day,

0:20:20 > 0:20:21and the smile that he's got on his face,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24there's no questions as to why we're doing it.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Are you looking forward to when the family come back and see this?

0:20:30 > 0:20:31Yes, yes, really am, yes.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Will you be emotional, do you think?

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Are you an emotional man?

0:20:35 > 0:20:36Are you a man who has a little cry?

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Not in public but I do have a little...now and again.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43- Do you?- Yeah.- A few man hugs maybe at the end of the week, or is that going too far?

0:20:43 > 0:20:46No, no, I do like a man hug now and again but not in public.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Oh, right. Do you want a man hug now, or not?

0:20:49 > 0:20:52- Do you need to turn the camera away for this?- No, let's go for it.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56That's what we call in Wales a cwtch.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59- A cwtch, is that what they call it? - Yeah, yeah.- Nice.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02There's another one for my Welsh repertoire, a cwtch.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07Well, as we look through the house a new stud wall built in here,

0:21:07 > 0:21:09this is going to be the study area

0:21:09 > 0:21:12and then we move through into what will be the living room area

0:21:12 > 0:21:15where we've made a lot of dust in the air at the moment and

0:21:15 > 0:21:17the ceiling's down, the electrics in, plumbing in etc, etc.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Come through into the new building.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Cos, as you can see, it's extraordinary large.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25This is going to be kitchen and bedroom and then wet room.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28If you look out here over the top of my lovely friends here,

0:21:28 > 0:21:31even the garden' been made a start on. So quite a good day, don't you think?

0:21:31 > 0:21:35- We've done a very good day.- It's been lovely.- Absolutely brilliant.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37It's been that good let's go and have some dinner.

0:21:37 > 0:21:38That's a very good idea, all right.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41- Salad, obviously. - See you in the morning.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56Well, another day and we've got 80 trades on site this morning again.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Even the local bobbies are rolling up their sleeves to help.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03You've got to pull them over when they're with the wheelbarrow and go,

0:22:03 > 0:22:05"What speed do you think you're doing?"

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Why have you and your mate decided to come in and join in

0:22:08 > 0:22:10and throw yourselves at this particular project?

0:22:10 > 0:22:13It's just nice to go and help into the community

0:22:13 > 0:22:15like, you know, help a boy who needs a bit of help.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18It's just enjoyable, you know, something to do nice, like.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20- Have you got kids yourself? - I've got four.

0:22:20 > 0:22:21- Have you?- Yeah.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25Inside the plumbers are flying through the house but it appears

0:22:25 > 0:22:30that someone has amended Gabrielle's plan without consulting her.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33There's a pipe in the way and I've got to redesign the furniture.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35You've got to have gas in here,

0:22:35 > 0:22:37got to have gas, got to have heat, got to have warmth.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39No, but it would be nice if someone could say,

0:22:39 > 0:22:42"Gabbers, we're about to put a flipping great big pipe in..."

0:22:42 > 0:22:44We couldn't do that cos we had to get the scaffolders in.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47- We had to get the plumber in so the scaffolders...- I'm right here!

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I was probably over there when this happened.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52Yes, but you were dealing with what shape you wanted the garden wall to be.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55You can't deal with everything, you're not omnipresent.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57Well, I'm just bimbling about.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00If people would say, "Do you mind if we ruin your design in this room,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03"just as we ruined it in that room?"

0:23:03 > 0:23:05In which case we better consult her before we drop

0:23:05 > 0:23:08the ceiling height in that room.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12It's purely aesthetic but I thought it would be nice to hide this step in the corner.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Do you want this ceiling reduced, or not?

0:23:15 > 0:23:17I'm thinking it through, I can't just, you know.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20- I don't know if I want to lose the ceiling height or not...- Be reckless.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23- I don't think we can.- I think you should lose the ceiling height.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26I don't think we can. Look how high the window's coming up.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28- I don't think you can. - Yeah, it would look stupid.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31- How about some nice curves. - No, no, no way.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34And then you can mimic it in that corner over there,

0:23:34 > 0:23:35- so you get like a...- Oh, oh, oh!

0:23:35 > 0:23:38You could have four of them in each corner.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Please! I'm actually going to be physically sick

0:23:41 > 0:23:43if anyone does any curvy ceilings.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47And then a nice ceiling rose in the middle, mimicking the four corners.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Just let me actually think it through.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52- Well, when can we expect a decision on that one?- Well, I mean...

0:23:52 > 0:23:54This is why we don't consult you.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58I need to give her some time.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01Maybe an hour, or a day, or a year.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03I can use the time to go off and have a chat with Daniel,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07who you'll remember Jack described as his best friend.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11You were seven when Jack came along

0:24:11 > 0:24:14and so you've lived with this your whole life.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15Has that been difficult?

0:24:15 > 0:24:17When Jack came and, obviously, he had his disability

0:24:17 > 0:24:21I wasn't having as much attention as most kids of my age would have had

0:24:21 > 0:24:24but it's something that...Jack needed our help and I understood that

0:24:24 > 0:24:26and my mother did everything, not only for Jack

0:24:26 > 0:24:29but she did try and spend and do as much stuff with me.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32It's something you seem to get on with and you start to live with then.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Do you find it difficult, as a brother,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36knowing there are things that Jack can't join in with?

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Well, I do feel really sympathetic for him.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42I mean, well, knowing that, he's already told me how hard

0:24:42 > 0:24:46he find things, watching everyone do what basically he can't do but,

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I mean, with Jack he's got a really big heart and he just gets on with it

0:24:49 > 0:24:53and he's happy for everyone else even though he knows he can't do it.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56He's a teenage boy and he's growing into his teenage years

0:24:56 > 0:24:59and, I guess, what he really wants is independence.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02I think he does feel a bit guilty sometimes, like he has to

0:25:02 > 0:25:06ask my mother mostly and then me for some things that he can't do,

0:25:06 > 0:25:09but I mean he tries, he just wants things to be as normal as possible

0:25:09 > 0:25:11for himself, to be honest with you.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13So the more independence we can give him the better.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16Yeah, definitely, and he'd really enjoy that, as well, knowing

0:25:16 > 0:25:18that he wouldn't have to ask me and my mum for so much any more.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Yep, it seems Jack's independence IS key to giving this family

0:25:22 > 0:25:25the quality of life they deserve.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28Time to get back to site and there's been a change.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31Look at the outside of the house, it's been rendered all over

0:25:31 > 0:25:33and is looking very, very pretty.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37Although, I may have forgotten to consult Gabby on something.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Well, I've just overheard by pure chance somebody ordering

0:25:40 > 0:25:43- decking for the garden. - That's right.- Why?

0:25:43 > 0:25:48Because we have to raise to a level of the patio doors

0:25:48 > 0:25:52and you've got flush exit/entry patio doors.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Yeah, low threshold, yeah.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57And when we actually bring the pipe, the concrete down to this edge

0:25:57 > 0:26:00and the ramp at the far end, it leaves this area in here

0:26:00 > 0:26:03- and so if we put a wood decking down here...- No, no, no!

0:26:03 > 0:26:06- Stop.- With a retaining wall.- Nick. Nicholas, seriously, just stop.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09You said...I mean nobody even talked to me about this

0:26:09 > 0:26:12and the one thing the family asked me for is no decking.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15I can't have decisions like that made without even asking me.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18We did. We talked about it together, didn't we?

0:26:18 > 0:26:22We talked about it, Nick, yeah. It's the part end problem, you know, with the level threshold.

0:26:22 > 0:26:26No, no! Argh! I'm completely aware of the level threshold.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28This is just not a discussion I'm going to have.

0:26:28 > 0:26:29If I said sorry would it help?

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Sorry would help and not being so patronising would really help.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36I'm really sorry and I'll try to be less patronising. I don't mean to be patronising at all.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40Well, you can't help it. It is just your demeanour, to be fair, you do it to everyone, doesn't he, Chris?

0:26:40 > 0:26:43- Have I been patronising to you? - No, not to me, no.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46You said that in a really condescending way.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49- Now I feel bad.- Good.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53I do, I really do feel bad. I was only trying to help.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57We're still waiting on a decision for the porch, or the ceiling in the lounge.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Things are cracking on with the access ramp for Jack,

0:26:59 > 0:27:03such a simple thing being able to use your own front door.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06It's an absolutely sweltering hot day, too,

0:27:06 > 0:27:08so the tops are coming off all over the place,

0:27:08 > 0:27:11including Jules with his special builder's tan.

0:27:11 > 0:27:12It's stuck to me.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16- When I was young and fit and working on the building site.- Yeah.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19- I burnt my shoulders a bit, cos I was walking around topless.- Yeah.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23I burnt my shoulders, so I got a T-shirt and I cut it off there.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26- You went crop top?- I went crop top.

0:27:26 > 0:27:27What were you thinking, Perryman!

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- Well, I was just trying to protect my shoulders.- But what(?)

0:27:30 > 0:27:33And I was just walking up Modbury high street

0:27:33 > 0:27:35and I was getting wolf whistles from men and women.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37It was a bit scary.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39And I promise we did not spray tan his head.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- Are you all right? - Yes, sweetie, going well.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46It's like Jodrell Bank up here. This is the bit that scares me. I don't like electricity.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49I feel like I'm a puppet on strings.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51I was going to ask you a question, what's your favourite job

0:27:51 > 0:27:54you've ever had, obviously, other than DIY SOS?

0:27:54 > 0:27:58Saudi Arabia, Nicaragua...

0:27:58 > 0:28:00New York...

0:28:00 > 0:28:04I reckon, I had a few years in the fairgrounds.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07That doesn't surprise me at all, to be honest.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Well, it's true cos there's a...

0:28:09 > 0:28:12- There's a bit of everything in me, you know that.- Yes.

0:28:12 > 0:28:14So which stall did you run?

0:28:14 > 0:28:16The strange thing was I was pretty good at shooting.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19So you reckon you're a bit of a sharp-eyed shooter?

0:28:19 > 0:28:22Well, the trouble is I was losing a lot of money from pundits

0:28:22 > 0:28:23coming up and bang, bang, bang.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25In the end they said, "You've got to beat Billy."

0:28:25 > 0:28:28They used to call me Billy The Shot Bull's-eye Byrne.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30Did anyone ever beat you?

0:28:30 > 0:28:32- No-one beat me.- How long?

0:28:32 > 0:28:3338 years.

0:28:33 > 0:28:3438 years, man and boy.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36And they called you what was it again?

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Billy The Shot Bull's-eye Byrne.

0:28:38 > 0:28:43- Did they?- Yeah, I've never missed. - Never missed.- No.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46Now you know that that's a bit of a set-up.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49I know, but play along with us cos it's going to be very entertaining.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52He's off to meet the boys because I've suddenly realised that

0:28:52 > 0:28:54shooting is something they can all do together.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57- Go on, tell your brother what you're doing.- We're going shooting.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59Brilliant, that's something we can do together.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02That's the point and we've invited Billy, our best shot.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04He's supposed to have been here by now. Where is he?

0:29:04 > 0:29:07Come on, then, boys, let's get to it.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09What have you come as?

0:29:09 > 0:29:11This is what we used to wear when we used to go shooting.

0:29:11 > 0:29:15- What, to sneak up on people?- You don't want them to see you, do you?

0:29:15 > 0:29:17You're not a sniper, we're just doing some friendly shooting.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20Look, I'm going to go over there and do some sunbathing,

0:29:20 > 0:29:22the shooting is through that way. Off you go.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25Jack, Danny, come on, let me show you how good I am.

0:29:25 > 0:29:26Suffering the usual lack of confidence,

0:29:26 > 0:29:31our flip-flop assassin is heading off to take on the boys

0:29:31 > 0:29:33and I bet he won't make any excuses.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36Oh, I haven't done this for a couple of years, I promise you.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38Maybe one or two excuses.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41OK, right, so, Jack, we just need to put that cross

0:29:41 > 0:29:43on what you want to hit and then just slowly squeeze the trigger.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Now a funny thing happens here,

0:29:45 > 0:29:48it turns out Jack is a bit good at this.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50- You got him! Yes, downed it! - I got that, it was mine.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52- No, it wasn't.- It was.

0:29:53 > 0:29:55And so is Daniel.

0:29:55 > 0:30:02In fact, in no time, they're knocking down target after target.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05So push that into the left so that it slides.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08Whilst Billy still hasn't worked out how to switch the thing on.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10Oh, that one? I see.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13I'm going to go for that little rat.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15You dirty rat, you killed my brother.

0:30:15 > 0:30:20Yes, impressions of people from 1936!

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Oh, I didn't load it.

0:30:23 > 0:30:24Meanwhile, Jack...

0:30:24 > 0:30:26Oh, yeah, that was a great hit.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28..and Daniel...

0:30:28 > 0:30:29Good shot.

0:30:29 > 0:30:30..are doing amazingly well.

0:30:30 > 0:30:35Oh, another one. You're really showing Billy how to do it, he's missing every shot next-door here.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37Yeah, couldn't hit a barn door.

0:30:37 > 0:30:38- Oh, no.- It moved.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41- It moved.- It was the wind.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43Making ugly eyes at me.

0:30:46 > 0:30:47Nothing!

0:30:47 > 0:30:49Getting further away each time now, Billy.

0:30:49 > 0:30:53Did you know, I could split a matchstick from 300 yards?

0:30:56 > 0:30:58OK, Jack, when you're ready, go for the pyros on what

0:30:58 > 0:31:01we call the tombstone, then you'll be in for a big surprise.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04So to prove he's really good, look at this.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Yes, brilliant stuff, excellent.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13That was a genuine shot and so is this.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18Come on, Bill, you can do it.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Argh!

0:31:22 > 0:31:25That's on a different course altogether.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28I think there's something wrong with your eyesight there, Bill.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32I'm the best shot there is, Billy The Shot Bull's-eye Byrne.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Do you know what I mean?

0:31:34 > 0:31:36I don't know about bull's-eye. Bull something.

0:31:36 > 0:31:41What a cracking day for the boys, though, I really enjoyed that.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44So we're at the halfway stage and things are starting to take shape.

0:31:44 > 0:31:48Gabrielle eventually decided to drop the ceiling height in the lounge,

0:31:48 > 0:31:51and now the plasterers are cracking on with the boarding and skimming

0:31:51 > 0:31:55and it's at this point I think building sites turn into real houses once the plaster goes on.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58The tiles are going on the walls in Jack's wet room

0:31:58 > 0:32:00and the kitchen is being installed.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03Outside the house is being transformed with a new render

0:32:03 > 0:32:06and beautiful sash windows and work on the garden room is under way

0:32:06 > 0:32:09and they've started on the drainage and paving.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12I have to admit Gabrielle's Plan A was the correct plan.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Still no news on the porch, though,

0:32:14 > 0:32:16and there is a still a long way to go.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18Oh!

0:32:18 > 0:32:21And it seems we've hit a problem with Jack's wet room floor.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26The water from the shower runs back towards Jack's bedroom door.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29ON PHONE: Oh, my God, right.

0:32:29 > 0:32:34So we need to take that beautiful floor you've just laid,

0:32:34 > 0:32:37take that... Is that glued down?

0:32:40 > 0:32:42'Yes, it's fully bonded, yes.

0:32:42 > 0:32:46'You can run a knife round the base of the cork where the radius hits the flat.'

0:32:46 > 0:32:51- And peel that floor out and get it prepped for you to come back and lay a new floor?- 'Yeah.'

0:32:51 > 0:32:54All right, Phil, thanks for your help, mate,

0:32:54 > 0:32:56I'll speak to you later on. Cheers.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58'OK, ta-ra.'

0:32:58 > 0:33:03That room has to work perfectly for Jack so that he can go in

0:33:03 > 0:33:06and have a shower, that the whole room is perfect for him

0:33:06 > 0:33:10and we're nearly at finish. We don't need that, we don't need that to happen now.

0:33:10 > 0:33:15So we've got to be positive, be positive and get it sorted out.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18What he means is the water is running towards the doorway

0:33:18 > 0:33:20not towards the plughole as it should.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23So whilst they're sorting that out, I'm going to pop round to have a chat with Mum.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26What do you think people would not understand about having to

0:33:26 > 0:33:28deal with all the things you've dealt with?

0:33:28 > 0:33:33It is difficult bringing up the boys and working and being a mum

0:33:33 > 0:33:37and Jack, as Jack's been on... with Jack 24/7 but...

0:33:40 > 0:33:44What can you say? There are, like, I don't know,

0:33:44 > 0:33:46a lot of people going through what I'm going through.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48Would it be fair to say that the hardest thing is

0:33:48 > 0:33:51the fact that is just doesn't ever stop?

0:33:51 > 0:33:52Yeah, erm...

0:33:53 > 0:33:56It has been constant for the last, well, since he's been born.

0:33:56 > 0:34:01I mean, he had his first operation at nine months so just..

0:34:01 > 0:34:04- Just worn out?- Mmm.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07And what really hurt me is when I was coming home from hospital,

0:34:07 > 0:34:12the nurse practitioner phoned Social Services to see if there was any help available

0:34:12 > 0:34:14and the comment that was made was,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17"Yeah, we could help if she was having a nervous breakdown"

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and they were like, "Are you having a nervous breakdown?"

0:34:20 > 0:34:22Then it goes through my head then and if I...

0:34:22 > 0:34:25Daft things go through your head. I said, "Well, if I admit to them

0:34:25 > 0:34:28"I'm having a nervous breakdown they may take my kids off me."

0:34:28 > 0:34:29Do you know? Like, silly things go...

0:34:29 > 0:34:32So I just felt as soon as I came out of hospital

0:34:32 > 0:34:35you're just very much on your own and you've got to get on with it.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38You wonder where Jack gets his strength from. To me it's very clear.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41So where do you get your strength from?

0:34:41 > 0:34:44Cos Jack's strong, Jack makes me strong

0:34:44 > 0:34:47and, you know, he needs me

0:34:47 > 0:34:50and at one time for five months he needed me 24/7

0:34:50 > 0:34:52and that was a hard time, so...

0:34:52 > 0:34:55He's in pain and he gets on with it so I think,

0:34:55 > 0:34:58"What am I moaning about?" You know, he's the one that's struggling

0:34:58 > 0:35:01and I'm... That's where I get my strength, from it's from Jack.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04It's very clear that they get their strength from each other.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07They lean on each other, they support each other.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10It's a very lovely family, isn't it?

0:35:10 > 0:35:13Well, it's the last day and there's a long way still to go.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17The wet room floor is being re-latexed to make the water run towards the drain,

0:35:17 > 0:35:19but it still isn't right.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22It's been bulked up to an extent but it,

0:35:22 > 0:35:26they've built-up this area here but this area here is still...

0:35:26 > 0:35:28- Still low?- Yeah.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32If we bring another coat of latex now to that height,

0:35:32 > 0:35:36it's still only just giving you a fall.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39We're at the point now when we have to start bringing a lip up and

0:35:39 > 0:35:42- then that gives us the difficulty of wheelchair access.- Yeah.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45- We're going to have to build it up.- Yeah.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48- This pushes you back again, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50Definitely cos he's been in here for three days now.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54Do you want a cwtch?

0:35:54 > 0:35:56Correct use of the word cwtch there, you see.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58I need a cwtch, too, at the moment.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01Things aren't just going wrong in the wet room.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04These bespoke shelves are beautifully built in Jack's bedroom

0:36:04 > 0:36:06but they're in the wrong place.

0:36:06 > 0:36:10The guys, in their haste, checked this dimension.

0:36:10 > 0:36:13Off of the reveal when they should have done it from the wall.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16And this is the important dimension, obviously, his bed.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18And how is it on the bed?

0:36:18 > 0:36:22So we need 1050 and we've got 960

0:36:22 > 0:36:26which would be fine for a standard single but this is our hospital bed.

0:36:29 > 0:36:30So...

0:36:30 > 0:36:32So it's all got to come off and move over.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35Yes, and this has taken a really, really long time,

0:36:35 > 0:36:37and we've got wires and pipes

0:36:37 > 0:36:42and, you know, if we'd plied it, it would not be a problem.

0:36:42 > 0:36:46- But we didn't?- No.- There's no point in talking about what we could have done.- I know, I know.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48See, this is what makes me wrinkly,

0:36:48 > 0:36:50and the garden's got a lot to do too.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53This is the last day, we've got to nail this.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56- You've got a bit left to do down there.- Yeah, about an hour left down there.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58Can we reduce the amount of paving we can do up here

0:36:58 > 0:37:01and make a path through so that you can get from the top of the ramp

0:37:01 > 0:37:04into the shed and onto the garden, and just gravel this section here?

0:37:04 > 0:37:07Yeah, yeah, that's no problem.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10We're going to have to put pressure on you to try and get this out

0:37:10 > 0:37:13so we can get all the bodies off this bit so we can get this down

0:37:13 > 0:37:16- cos we don't want to be here at midnight tonight laying slabs. - That's it.

0:37:16 > 0:37:21We've only just starting building this 1,800-brick sidewall.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26What do you reckon, five of them on this wall?

0:37:26 > 0:37:29We reckon there's going to be five tubs of this on the wall.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31You know this lot are not going to be beaten,

0:37:31 > 0:37:34they have turned out in their droves and are working like Trojans.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37Strike that, they're not working like Trojans,

0:37:37 > 0:37:40they're working like Welsh people from the Swansea area, which is

0:37:40 > 0:37:43exactly what they are, these people are going to make a difference.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46One person who knows just how much it means is Jack's

0:37:46 > 0:37:49play specialist from the hospital, Jane.

0:37:49 > 0:37:53You nominated the family, Jane, and you've worked with him

0:37:53 > 0:37:56as he's gone through all of his various operations?

0:37:56 > 0:38:00How tough has the process been for him in what he's gone through?

0:38:00 > 0:38:01Gruelling.

0:38:01 > 0:38:06He has scoliosis correction seven years ago and rods put in,

0:38:06 > 0:38:09but because he was still only seven then

0:38:09 > 0:38:14the rods have a growing system, so it's a bit like an expandable shower curtain rail.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17Every six months he'd come in and have the rods extended

0:38:17 > 0:38:21and people think because, you know, these children have been in before,

0:38:21 > 0:38:24had the treatment before, it gets easier. Well, sometimes it doesn't.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27As they get older it gets harder and harder to come in and have those ops done.

0:38:27 > 0:38:30His last day was particularly tough, wasn't it?

0:38:30 > 0:38:32I know Helen was very emotional about it.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36Yeah, for that last visit Helen got quite upset

0:38:36 > 0:38:38when he was going up to theatre.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41So I went in with Jack and as he's going off to sleep

0:38:41 > 0:38:43for the anaesthetic he said,

0:38:43 > 0:38:45"Oh, Jane, will you make sure my mum's OK?"

0:38:45 > 0:38:47You know, even when he's going through all that, he was still

0:38:47 > 0:38:51worried about his mum and they are just such a close,

0:38:51 > 0:38:54loving family, you know. It's wonderful to watch it, really.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57That's why they deserve it, they never complain, they never ask for anything...

0:38:57 > 0:39:00- No, just get on with it... - She still goes to work.- Yeah.

0:39:00 > 0:39:04- You know it's amazing really. - She's never lived off benefit, she's you know, she's...

0:39:04 > 0:39:06And she's just got on with life.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11It seems that this family's story has touched so many people

0:39:11 > 0:39:13and motivated many more to turn out and help.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17I've got a 14-year-old grandson of my own.

0:39:17 > 0:39:18Erm...

0:39:18 > 0:39:22I think this young lad just needs all the help we can give him.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Erm, I'm in the position to do it and I'm glad to do it.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27And it's not just people from the local community.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31Laurence here has brought his team all the way from Exeter.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33It's the second time in three years that you've joined in with us

0:39:33 > 0:39:35and the same reason, I can imagine.

0:39:35 > 0:39:39It is, I think having a daughter who's got special needs

0:39:39 > 0:39:42I know the quality of life that the children will get

0:39:42 > 0:39:45from having this building. I don't need to question it.

0:39:45 > 0:39:49And Tony's been working nights in a care home before coming

0:39:49 > 0:39:51to help out here every day.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54Well, I had a niece who was disabled

0:39:54 > 0:39:57and she had a similar facility put in.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00She had a bedroom and a wet room downstairs

0:40:00 > 0:40:02and it makes a world of difference.

0:40:02 > 0:40:07Just a little bit of going without sleep for me and it's not a long time.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09A fantastic feeling, you can't buy that.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13People have come from all walks of life to help out, you know.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16It's been great, ain't it? We've had a lot of local heroes on this job.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19And the most famous tiler in Wales.

0:40:19 > 0:40:21# Turn around...

0:40:21 > 0:40:24# Every now and then I get a little bit lonely. #

0:40:24 > 0:40:26SHE LAUGHS CHEERING

0:40:26 > 0:40:28Bonnie Tyler in the house!

0:40:28 > 0:40:30Doing the tiling, literally.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32LAUGHTER

0:40:32 > 0:40:35OK, so she wasn't really doing the tiling,

0:40:35 > 0:40:38but she certainly got everyone fired up for the final push.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40Look at this lot go.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42Go on, Bonnie!

0:40:46 > 0:40:48I think we've even cracked the wet room floor.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52So we need to start up here by the door jamb.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54- There we go.- There she goes. - Woo-hoo!

0:40:58 > 0:41:00That's what you call a Rory McIlroy.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04Gabrielle's bespoke porch is a triumph. A triumphal arch, if you like.

0:41:04 > 0:41:05Shame she's not here to see it

0:41:05 > 0:41:08as she's doing some portrait shots of the dog.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11Have you thought this through? Why is everything grey?

0:41:11 > 0:41:12I hate tongue and groove.

0:41:12 > 0:41:15That's Nick Knowles. NICK LAUGHS

0:41:15 > 0:41:17It wasn't bad actually, was it?

0:41:17 > 0:41:20Do you know what else isn't bad, the finishing touches on the house.

0:41:20 > 0:41:25Look at 'em go! They are proper heroes one and all!

0:41:25 > 0:41:28MUSIC: I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler

0:41:29 > 0:41:32Nine days ago, this tired, old house

0:41:32 > 0:41:35fell a long way short of meeting the family's needs.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38Jacks' mobility meant that he was left stranded in his own living room

0:41:38 > 0:41:42and totally reliant on his mum, Helen, to do the simplest of tasks.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45In the middle of the night, if I need anything,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48to go to the toilet or something like that,

0:41:48 > 0:41:51I'd have to call my mum to come downstairs.

0:41:51 > 0:41:57And I really don't like doing that because, as my mother's tired doing everything for me in the day,

0:41:57 > 0:42:02I like for her to have a good night's sleep. So I just wait until the morning.

0:42:02 > 0:42:06But mum stayed strong for Jack even when she was struggling inside.

0:42:06 > 0:42:10Most of the time he's never seen me falling apart,

0:42:10 > 0:42:13but there are times when you shut the door and you have a good cry

0:42:13 > 0:42:17and you do think to yourself, "Do you know what, why me, why Jack?"

0:42:18 > 0:42:21And I don't know why Jack.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24And that still kills me to think, "Why Jack?"

0:42:24 > 0:42:30Cos no child...deserves what he's been through.

0:42:30 > 0:42:34The lack of space meant that Helen's only retreat was her bedroom,

0:42:34 > 0:42:38and brother Daniel couldn't spend quality time with Jack as he once did.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40Jack's bed is in the one half of the living room

0:42:40 > 0:42:43and then he's got his big chair in the other half.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46So, it's really hard for everyone to sit down there as a family and spend time together.

0:42:46 > 0:42:50The local community and those from further afield

0:42:50 > 0:42:53have given it their all to complete this build on time.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56And they've done an incredible job.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00The outside of the property has been totally transformed

0:43:00 > 0:43:03with a white, bright render and beautiful sash windows.

0:43:03 > 0:43:08Gabrielle's bespoke porch with Welsh slate tiles and this stylish front door

0:43:08 > 0:43:11welcome family and friends into the home.

0:43:13 > 0:43:16And, you know, it's the new access ramp at the front that's such a big deal,

0:43:16 > 0:43:19a wider hallway and doors will allow Jack

0:43:19 > 0:43:23to use his front door for the first time since he was a very small child.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29Gabrielle has utilised every millimetre of the old living space

0:43:29 > 0:43:33where Jack once slept to create two defined but accessible spaces.

0:43:33 > 0:43:38A practical study with a bespoke desk gives Jack a place to revise for his GCSEs,

0:43:38 > 0:43:42whilst Helen relaxes nearby in this cosy lounge.

0:43:43 > 0:43:45Double doors lead through into the new extension,

0:43:45 > 0:43:47which is home to the large kitchen-diner,

0:43:47 > 0:43:52a space where the family can enjoy meals around the table together once again.

0:43:55 > 0:43:57At the rear of the extension

0:43:57 > 0:44:00is a bedroom for Jack with en suite wet room.

0:44:00 > 0:44:02Filled with gadgets, it's a space that gives him

0:44:02 > 0:44:07privacy and independence as he grows into a young man.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10Upstairs there's a double bedroom for Daniel,

0:44:10 > 0:44:13so he can spend more time at home.

0:44:16 > 0:44:18And we've refreshed Helen's bedroom

0:44:18 > 0:44:21to create a tranquil and calm retreat.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25You know Jack's old bedroom has been given a spruce up too,

0:44:25 > 0:44:28it's become a modern but luxurious bathroom,

0:44:28 > 0:44:32a space for Helen to relax and pamper herself.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37Right, let's nip outside. The garden has been completely overhauled

0:44:37 > 0:44:39to make it wheelchair accessible.

0:44:39 > 0:44:43We've created three zones to meet the needs of every occasion.

0:44:43 > 0:44:49Double doors from the kitchen-diner and Jack's bedroom lead out onto this beautiful paved terrace,

0:44:49 > 0:44:53a place where Helen can enjoy a glass of wine with friends.

0:44:53 > 0:44:59A nice little subtle access ramp leads to this low-maintenance entertaining space for parties.

0:44:59 > 0:45:03And, finally, this garden room is a man-only hang-out for Jack and Daniel

0:45:03 > 0:45:06to enjoy quality time as brothers.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11This is a home for three people to enjoy independence and privacy,

0:45:11 > 0:45:15but also be together as the strong family they are.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18It's time for them to come home.

0:45:20 > 0:45:26OK, the house needed to change to make your life better,

0:45:26 > 0:45:29Jack's life better, Daniel's life better.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32We hope we've given you what you need.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Open your eyes.

0:45:34 > 0:45:36- Oh, my gosh! - SHE SOBS

0:45:38 > 0:45:40SHE SOBS

0:45:43 > 0:45:45Oh, my God!

0:45:49 > 0:45:51God! It's amazing!

0:45:53 > 0:45:55Oh, it's fantastic!

0:45:59 > 0:46:01I don't know what to say!

0:46:02 > 0:46:05The chair, which has been in the middle of the room and causing problems,

0:46:05 > 0:46:09now has its proper place and it's somewhere that you can get around,

0:46:09 > 0:46:13but it's part of a whole sofa area where you can all sit together.

0:46:14 > 0:46:17It's beyond my wildest dreams.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22- Oh, look at that for Jack!- Yeah.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26- Come on. I've got more to show you. - OK.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40Oh!

0:46:40 > 0:46:43Oh, it's absolutely beautiful!

0:46:43 > 0:46:46It really is!

0:46:46 > 0:46:48Oh, table and chairs!

0:46:51 > 0:46:54That's all I've ever dreamed of is a table and chairs.

0:46:54 > 0:46:57Why is a table and chairs so important?

0:46:57 > 0:47:01Because we've... For the last year, we've never sat around the table together.

0:47:01 > 0:47:05And we've just missed it. We're always living off trays, sitting in the lounge,

0:47:05 > 0:47:07so this is just going to be absolutely amazing.

0:47:07 > 0:47:10And now we've got a wide door now to get Jack through,

0:54:49 > 0:54:52- You all right?- Yeah.- Ready for the next bit?- No.

0:54:52 > 0:54:53LAUGHTER

0:54:55 > 0:54:56CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:24 > 0:55:27Thank you will never...ever be enough,

0:55:27 > 0:55:29it's so life-changing for us.

0:55:29 > 0:55:34We've had a really tough few years, especially my little hero here.

0:55:34 > 0:55:39I'll never forget any of you, I'll always remember you.

0:55:39 > 0:55:42And I'm very, very proud to be part of this community.

0:55:42 > 0:55:46- And you're all welcome to visit, but not together. - LAUGHTER

0:55:48 > 0:55:51A few weeks ago, I was sleeping in the middle of the lounge

0:55:51 > 0:55:53and I had no space to move at all.

0:55:53 > 0:55:57And looking at the house now...I'm just speechless.

0:55:57 > 0:56:00So I just want to say thank you, all of you,

0:56:00 > 0:56:06and I wish...I wish whoever you help next has the same.

0:56:06 > 0:56:09- APPLAUSE MAN:- Well done, Jack.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24Emotional. I don't know how he can do it.

0:56:24 > 0:56:30I've got a little tear. But at the end of the day, like I said before, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

0:56:30 > 0:56:32- I'm Dean. This is Dai.- Hiya.

0:56:32 > 0:56:34- BOTH:- We done the ramp for you. - Sweet.

0:56:34 > 0:56:37Really emotional.

0:56:37 > 0:56:41- And the sense of togetherness to me is absolutely amazing.- Oh, yeah.

0:56:46 > 0:56:49You know, strangely this family remind me of a three-legged stool,

0:56:49 > 0:56:54they kind of lean on each other, they support each other, they hold each other up in bad times.

0:56:54 > 0:56:58And the house bears that analogy as well, cos a three-legged stool is the minimum you possibly need.

0:56:58 > 0:57:03And you can't live life like that. So these guys decided to change it and they have.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06Now a mum, who's faced an uphill battle of 14 years,

0:57:06 > 0:57:10gets some respite, somewhere to recharge her batteries.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13Eldest son Daniel gets his little brother back,

0:57:13 > 0:57:16and gets to be at home, and they've got space to be together.

0:57:16 > 0:57:20And Jack himself, going through his teenage years, he gets independence,

0:57:20 > 0:57:24dignity and a very cool place to have his mates round.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28Maybe you know somebody who needs your help.

0:57:30 > 0:57:33We're always looking for people to help,

0:57:33 > 0:57:35but we're especially eager to hear from elderly people

0:57:35 > 0:57:37who desperately need a big build.

0:57:37 > 0:57:39You can contact us at...

0:57:45 > 0:57:47- MAN:- Every single one of 'em. - CHATTER

0:57:47 > 0:57:50- Oh, no, amazing. Thank you so much. - I'm so pleased for you.

0:57:50 > 0:57:53- Thank you very much.- It's been an absolute pleasure.

0:57:53 > 0:57:56I'm Tony. I did a lot of the painting.

0:57:58 > 0:58:02- Is that good?- Oh, thank you.- Yeah? - That's really good.- All right.

0:58:02 > 0:58:04LAUGHTER

0:58:05 > 0:58:08- You OK, madam?- I don't know what to say.
