0:00:03 > 0:00:06No matter how tough life gets,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08family is everything.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Your lives are so entwined together, you know.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14Me and him, our lives are like that, you know.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16Without him I don't function, really.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18I wouldn't be the person I am without Charlie.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21But this family face the nightmare of being torn apart,

0:00:21 > 0:00:25and their youngest son going into a residential home.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28We can't face putting him into care.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31We're a tight-knit family, and we're sticking together as a family,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34and we'll carry on fighting as a family.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Love and that fighting spirit have kept them together up till now,

0:00:37 > 0:00:41but with a totally inadequate house and a growing teenager,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43that dilemma gets closer every day.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46I know at this moment of time

0:00:46 > 0:00:49that carrying Charlie up and down the stairs hurts him.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52There's so much at stake.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55If Charlie ever left our side, it would destroy her, I think.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57It really would.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Which is why we're here.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06We're going to build them a home to keep them together under one roof.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10But it's going to push us to our limit.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Argh!

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Keep it coming, boy.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20As usual we have just nine days

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and this is the biggest build we've ever undertaken.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Don't worry, we have Jules, we have Chris, we have Billy,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27we have Naomi, our designer. Where's Mark, by the way?

0:01:27 > 0:01:28Oh, right, thanks very much.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31So where are we going to find a giant army

0:01:31 > 0:01:34- to do this biggest ever build? - ALL: Over here!

0:01:34 > 0:01:40- CHEERING - Hey! This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Whoo, whoo!

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Jenny Whatts and Scott Russell from Kent met 22 years ago

0:01:54 > 0:01:57when they were both still in their teens.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59It was love at first sight.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02He was my first serious boyfriend.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05And my last! THEY LAUGH

0:02:05 > 0:02:09We met when we were 15, and then we had our first child

0:02:09 > 0:02:12- when I was still only 16.- 16.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Now they're a family of five with three teenage boys.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20The older boys, Bradley and Danny,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23work with Dad refurbishing alloy wheels.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28But life is very different for their youngest, 13-year-old Charlie.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31He's got spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33which means it affects all of the limbs in his body.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37He's registered as blind, he's got global developmental delay

0:02:37 > 0:02:42which means he's got brain damage, and he's also epileptic.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46I could list more, but that would be his main diagnoses.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Jenny has given up work to be his full-time carer.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Even though Charlie's needs are huge,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56these guys always make room for family life.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Everyone thinks with a special needs child,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03you have to handle Charlie with kid gloves.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04He's got two older brothers,

0:03:04 > 0:03:09- he like rough and tumble.- Yeah, he... - He's got a naughty sense of humour.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14He might look slightly different, but he's just a little boy.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18That's it, go on.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22He just likes all the sounds and all of the touchy-feely kind of stuff,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25because he's got quite a lot of movement in his hands only.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28So obviously most of his sensories is through his hands.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32I will never see Charlie as someone different.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33I always see him as my brother,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35that's the only thing I'll see him as.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38He comes out and he smiles every day at us,

0:03:38 > 0:03:42he gives us a giggle every day, so we can't moan.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46If he can go through all that he's gone through and keep fighting.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50And he has been a fighter since day one.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53I had a normal pregnancy, it was only until the last...

0:03:53 > 0:03:55last bit when he was born premature.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Because he was born so early,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03and he was actually born pronounced dead so they had to revive him.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09I saw them take away this tiny little bundle that was blue

0:04:09 > 0:04:11and I just... My head was gone, I was fuzzy.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13I didn't know what to think.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16He had a bleed in his brain.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19So we knew there was always going to be problems.

0:04:19 > 0:04:25For us, it was just a case of just keep him here, keep him with us.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28Yeah. He was alive and we can work on that.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30And that was all that mattered,

0:04:30 > 0:04:33because Jenny and Scott had already faced the worst nightmare

0:04:33 > 0:04:34any parent could imagine.

0:04:34 > 0:04:40Tragically, six years earlier, they lost their baby daughter Sophie.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42She only survived for three and a half weeks.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Just difficult to talk about sometimes.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00It would have been devastation if we'd have lost Charlie as well.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02It was a case of, it didn't matter what was wrong,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04as long as he was still here.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07It's not hard to understand

0:05:07 > 0:05:10why Jenny and Scott are so protective over Charlie.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13But their home is not right to look after him,

0:05:13 > 0:05:16and now they face losing him into care.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18I love my house, I love where I live,

0:05:18 > 0:05:22I love my neighbours, but our house has been fighting us.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Charlie can swallow his tongue in the night

0:05:24 > 0:05:27so he needs constant supervision.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29With no bedrooms on the ground floor,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31they've got no choice but to sleep upstairs,

0:05:31 > 0:05:34and it's getting tougher by the day.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Carrying a 13-year-old up the stairs,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41weighing 35 kilos, it... it takes a toll on you.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45It's a worry as well, if you fell on them stairs.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50It's not just the staircase. The house is cramped,

0:05:50 > 0:05:53and getting around with a wheelchair is a real struggle.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59With no storage space, medical supplies are scattered everywhere.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Wheelchair access in and out is a three-man job.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08And bath time is also a back-breaking task

0:06:08 > 0:06:10for the whole family.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15I see my mum struggle quite a bit now with her back problems as well,

0:06:15 > 0:06:16lifting him so often.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19She never really talks about it, but you can see it in her face

0:06:19 > 0:06:23when she lifts him up. It's not a nice thing to see, really.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26I'd carry on looking after Charlie this way

0:06:26 > 0:06:30if I knew it didn't affect Charlie now, but it actually hurts him

0:06:30 > 0:06:33to carry him around the way we do now because of the size he is.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39This family simply can't continue like this.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42We can't face putting him into care.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48I'm a mum and the bond we've got... is very strong.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51And I don't think anyone else could...

0:06:51 > 0:06:53nobody else could fill them boots.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55TEARFULLY: Sorry...

0:06:58 > 0:07:01I wouldn't give my son up for the world.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04That would be how it would feel.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08It would be complete devastation, it would be defeat.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14Right, this is where we come in with an army to build a home

0:07:14 > 0:07:17big enough to keep this family together.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26That's interesting, a round of applause for getting out of a house!

0:07:26 > 0:07:29You can see the struggle. That was ridiculous, wasn't it?

0:07:29 > 0:07:31And that's what it's been like all the time. So...

0:07:31 > 0:07:33What exactly do you need in the house?

0:07:33 > 0:07:38A downstairs bedroom for Charlie, with a bathroom next to the bedroom,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41and a bedroom for us that's next to Charlie

0:07:41 > 0:07:43so we can see to him through the night.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46OK. So how long is it since you've had a proper night's sleep, then?

0:07:46 > 0:07:48How old are you now, Charlie? THEY LAUGH

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- 13.- 13 years.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53And I asked the question, you could actually put him

0:07:53 > 0:07:56into a hospice, and he could get care in a hospice.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00It wouldn't happen, no. He's part of our family, he's our son.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03And you...you don't give up on your children, never.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- OK.- He's going nowhere.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Take care, guys.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Well then, we've got a massive task on our hands to build a house

0:08:12 > 0:08:14that's fit for this family.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Effectively, we're building a bungalow on the side.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23It is the biggest domestic property we've done.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25This is a massive extension on this house when you look at it.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28All of this, and round the corner here as well.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31As usual, we've just got nine days to finish this.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33It's essential, if we are going to finish it,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35that everything sticks to schedule.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Thankfully these builders, all 100 of them,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42in a house that can barely fit five, are wasting no time at all.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45All the floors are coming up, all the ceilings are coming down.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47Then we've got to take that wall out,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49that's first order of business today.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55And upstairs, we're smashing up the walls to replace the insulation.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58- It's a lovely view from up here, isn't it?- I don't know.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59Very historic area this, as well.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02I remember when this all used to be fields.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- You remember when this was all fields?- Yeah.

0:09:04 > 0:09:05So you are older than this house?

0:09:05 > 0:09:08No, when I come up here ten minutes ago.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10It's all fields, isn't it?

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Tough crowd, really.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16What do you think of it so far, lads?

0:09:16 > 0:09:18- ALL CHEER - That's more like it!

0:09:18 > 0:09:24Innit manic? I tell you what, secret...I think this is massive.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Going to be hard work and overtime.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Ha-ha-ha! Joking about the overtime.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33It's true, cos we don't pay at all let alone overtime!

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Our award winning designer Naomi Cleaver is back

0:09:36 > 0:09:39and she's got big plans to transform this small house.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42You've come back on probably our biggest ever build,

0:09:42 > 0:09:45so what is your overarching theme other than getting it finished?

0:09:45 > 0:09:47It's cottagey, Nick.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- What?- Cottagey. Contemporary cottage.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Jenny is a real homebody.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56What we've done is designed something that's just very sweet,

0:09:56 > 0:10:01and pretty, and fresh and modern but still homely.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Not twee?

0:10:03 > 0:10:07No, we're trying to avoid twee, we shall see how that goes.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10We're tip-toeing on the shore of the sea of twee.

0:10:10 > 0:10:11On the sea of twee.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15The look may be quaint, cosy cottage,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17but we're not letting that fool us.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19This is our biggest house build ever,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22because we're more than doubling the footprint with

0:10:22 > 0:10:27a huge wraparound extension creating four brand-new rooms, there it is.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30A living room area gives the family a place they can relax together.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Charlie will never again have to tackle the stairs

0:10:33 > 0:10:35as he'll have a bedroom on the ground floor

0:10:35 > 0:10:37with an adjoining wet room.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Jenny and Scott's room will be right next to him

0:10:41 > 0:10:43so they're always on hand through the night.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Removing the wall between the old kitchen and living room

0:10:46 > 0:10:49will make a large kitchen/diner where Charlie can move freely.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Right, let's go upstairs,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54because the two older boys will finally get the space they need.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58Scott and Jenny's old room will become Danny's.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Charlie's room will be a bathroom,

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and in the loft, the partition wall will be knocked out

0:11:04 > 0:11:08to give Bradley his own space to hang out in.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12Just outside the extension, a decked living area will be built

0:11:12 > 0:11:14with a ramp to help get Charlie in and out of the house,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17and there'll even be a lift down to the garden below.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18It's big.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Whoo whoo! Chugga-chugga!

0:11:23 > 0:11:26It's full steam ahead. Inside, everyone's getting mucky.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32And outside, Jules is in charge of one project,

0:11:32 > 0:11:36the lift to make the garden accessible for Charlie.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37The way he's going on, though,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40you would think he was building the Eiffel Tower!

0:11:42 > 0:11:46I'm probably over-confident there's not going to be any problems because

0:11:46 > 0:11:51it's been thought about and worked out to within an inch of its life.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54The atmosphere on-site is electric.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57The story has touched people from all over Kent.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01You see couples like this who struggle, what's a few days off?

0:12:01 > 0:12:04It's absolutely fantastic.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09The manpower is really paying dividends.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12If this carries on, we could have the extension up by the end of the day.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20While walls go up on the outside, they've all come down on the inside.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22We need to get some steel in,

0:12:22 > 0:12:24because the whole house is currently being held up on props.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Bang on schedule, they arrive.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35It's a monster.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38We're worried that it's a bit bigger than we were expecting.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41We need four metres, 950.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42We'll have to cut that here on-site.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Drag it off and cut it to length.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- We've got you a junior hacksaw.- OK.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Cutting it down will eat into our time

0:12:51 > 0:12:55but the measurements have to be exactly right - 4.95 metres.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Maths isn't Mark's strongest point,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00so there's no harm in double-checking.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Plus 1.50, 4,950. Lovely, thank you.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06- 4,970.- We're just double-checking.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08You don't need to double-check.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12I do need to double-check cos you always measure 100mm too short.

0:13:12 > 0:13:154,970 right.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17- Is that correct?- Yeah.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19'No, it's not, it's 4.95!

0:13:19 > 0:13:22'20 millimetres might make all the difference.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25'And this particular large saw can't get to the middle of it.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28'Queue smaller tool. Mark, in actual fact.'

0:13:28 > 0:13:34Wow! That was a tool, wasn't it?! Whose tool is that?

0:13:34 > 0:13:36A round of applause, there.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39It's half a tonne of steel.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42How are we going to shift that into the house?

0:13:43 > 0:13:45'Yes, it's the usual way. You might have noticed

0:13:45 > 0:13:49'I'm avoiding the heavy lifting but offering something more valuable.'

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Can you gently manoeuvre yourselves around?

0:13:54 > 0:13:56'You can't buy this kind of leadership.'

0:13:59 > 0:14:02There's a lot of chiefs here and a lot of cooks

0:14:02 > 0:14:03and you know what happens then.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Right, I suggest that we do is we take it in as far as the blocks

0:14:06 > 0:14:09and leave it there, then have a lift and in, yes?

0:14:09 > 0:14:12It doesn't have to be this complicated.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14'Oh, but it does. I think it does, Chris.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18'If I hadn't taken this in hand, we'd have lost loads more time.'

0:14:18 > 0:14:22Same again, lift and move - stop.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28Yeah, drop it, that'll do until we acrow.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31That went quite well, didn't it?

0:14:31 > 0:14:34And now you can gaze through the open space that is

0:14:34 > 0:14:38the downstairs of the house into the wide open spaces of the night.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41And look, if you peer through there, you can see the extension

0:14:41 > 0:14:45which doesn't have a roof on, but is the shape of an extension,

0:14:45 > 0:14:46so very chuffed with that.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50- It's a good day, that, weren't it? - Yeah.- Yeah, good day.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53'Yeah, I think he looked impressed, didn't he?

0:14:53 > 0:14:55'night-night.'

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Yesterday we put the timber frame up for the extension.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Today it needs a roof, or a lid, as they say in the trade.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11And it goes...just like that.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Inside the house, it's electric wire a gogo,

0:15:16 > 0:15:19but the sheer scale of the job is getting to one of our boys.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Bless!

0:15:21 > 0:15:23- Billy's in a state. - Yes, I know about that.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26- He's in a right mess.- He does get emotional about the whole thing.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29He gets worried and it gets him worked up into a bit of a stress.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- That is going to be a door there? - According to that, yeah.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35It's harder than usual, let's put it that way.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Especially on a super build, it is a super build, this is.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44There's so much going on that my head is spinning.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47Aw! But there is a lot to do, to be fair to him.

0:15:47 > 0:15:48And we are on schedule.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51In some places, even the windows are being fitted,

0:15:51 > 0:15:54and that's something I want to bend Naomi's ear about.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- Parent's bedroom.- Yep.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59My big worry is that when you look through at this area,

0:15:59 > 0:16:01- that's where your kitchen is.- Yeah.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03So that's going to be a very, very dark kitchen

0:16:03 > 0:16:05cos it's going to be a room in the middle of the house.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08- Oh, you say that though, Nick. - Well, I do.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10- I have a cunning plan.- You do?- Yeah.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14We have found this incredible mirrored sort of light wells,

0:16:14 > 0:16:19so it will be almost like having an atrium in this section here.

0:16:19 > 0:16:24- Is it a modern oculus? Is it? - SHE LAUGHS

0:16:24 > 0:16:26I like that, I think... I don't know!

0:16:26 > 0:16:28- But let's call it a modern oculus. - I think so.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31We're making great progress

0:16:31 > 0:16:35and it's purely down to the spirit of the local builders.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37What's your motivation for getting involved?

0:16:37 > 0:16:41Personally, even yesterday, when we got to see Charlie

0:16:41 > 0:16:42and building the ramp as well,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45cos we all saw the trouble, he was trying to get out of the house,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48so it'll be wonderful now to know that he can come in and out

0:16:48 > 0:16:50as much as he wants, it's freedom, isn't it?

0:16:50 > 0:16:53- So it's not just a building job?- No, no, there's a lot of pride in it.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57There's a real commitment to getting this job right for Charlie

0:16:57 > 0:16:59and his whole family.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03I want to find out how the older boys are dealing with home life.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09I think it's amazing how as a family

0:17:09 > 0:17:11you guys have all pulled together on it.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14What do you reckon is the toughest time for you all as a family?

0:17:14 > 0:17:17Charlie getting at his sickest points when he's in hospital

0:17:17 > 0:17:19and you don't know if he's going to come back or anything.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21We don't see Mum, Dad's at work,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24we're just at home waiting for someone to come back, really.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29I've thought many times of losing Charlie.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32It's not a nice feeling at all.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35It was getting to the point where he couldn't actually nearly breathe,

0:17:35 > 0:17:38he was struggling big-time, and that's when they said obviously

0:17:38 > 0:17:41where it's being quite an old house, there is too much dust,

0:17:41 > 0:17:43too much dirt around the whole area and it was either

0:17:43 > 0:17:46having to completely refurbish the whole house

0:17:46 > 0:17:49or possibly, like, having to give Charlie away

0:17:49 > 0:17:51cos it's too much work for Mum to do.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56Given the circumstances that you live in, and have grown up in,

0:17:56 > 0:17:59do you consider yourselves lucky or unlucky?

0:17:59 > 0:18:01I wouldn't consider us unlucky.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04That's our family, that's what we've gone through.

0:18:04 > 0:18:09Every family's gone through different stuff, that's just our thing.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Yeah, I'd consider ourselves more lucky I'd say,

0:18:11 > 0:18:13because I wouldn't be the person I am without Charlie.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16You wouldn't either, would you?

0:18:16 > 0:18:23I think it's taught me to respect life a lot more, value your life.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- Tell us about Mum and Dad, what are they like as parents?- Great parents.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29Unstoppable, get anything thrown at them, they will do it.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35My mum is a very good fighter, never gives up.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38All she thinks about is Charlie 24/7,

0:18:38 > 0:18:40she doesn't think about herself enough.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Dad is a very hard-working man,

0:18:44 > 0:18:47he'd do anything for our family, absolutely anything.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Work 13 hours a day just to get us through what we go through.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54And just still ends up with a smile, always laughing with us.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59They will do whatever they can in their power to help Charlie.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04Throughout the whole of their life, they've always hit brick walls,

0:19:04 > 0:19:06but they've always come through somehow.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09- Wouldn't know how but somehow. - No, don't know how.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13With insight beyond their years,

0:19:13 > 0:19:17those boys are a real credit to their parents.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19You know, they used to share this loft.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22Not any more. It will be just for Bradley.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24These are proper plasterers as well.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- You can tell because of the trouser...- And socks.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Look at the socks and the trouser going on there.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Explain to me why the tracksuit bottom

0:19:31 > 0:19:33is the trouser of choice for a plasterer.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37Movability, because you're all day long you're stretching

0:19:37 > 0:19:39and it just... WHISTLING: ..area.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41- Just for some movement, yeah. - Is it...

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- Cos that's a look, innit.- Oh, yeah.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Almost like gymnasts.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49I can see that, yeah. Very athletic, I can see.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51They're all athletes of life.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55You know, if we're to hit the deadline,

0:19:55 > 0:19:58we have to get the downstairs floor laid tonight.

0:19:59 > 0:20:04We've got to put all the insulation in to bring the floor levels up,

0:20:04 > 0:20:09and then 75 mil of screed over the top in that room,

0:20:09 > 0:20:13out into the extension, right through the extension,

0:20:13 > 0:20:14and in that room...

0:20:14 > 0:20:15up to there.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19HE SINGS

0:20:19 > 0:20:20Jules!

0:20:20 > 0:20:23'No time for singing - hard work calls, Jules.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26'There's another cement delivery that needs immediate attention -

0:20:26 > 0:20:28'Four tonnes of concrete for your lift base.'

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Whoo!

0:20:31 > 0:20:33'He's like a pig in...

0:20:33 > 0:20:35'Well, you know what I'm saying!'

0:20:35 > 0:20:36I love it, I love concrete.

0:20:36 > 0:20:37'He does.'

0:20:37 > 0:20:41We're going to make a steel frame which gets bolted down to our

0:20:41 > 0:20:45concrete pad, so the concrete has to be quite substantial.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48'Substantial? Blimey, Jules, it's like the Hoover Dam.'

0:20:52 > 0:20:54INDISTINCT CHAT

0:20:54 > 0:20:55That's perfect.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58The thing is we've gone a bit wider than we need to,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01so we've got a little bit of leeway anyway,

0:21:01 > 0:21:03just, you know,

0:21:03 > 0:21:05cos we could.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08I've sort of been around concrete pretty much all my life, really,

0:21:08 > 0:21:13so, er, I think this is possibly my most natural environment, really.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17'Really? I thought it was the Bay Horse down in Devon.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22'Now, you know I'm a stickler for Health and Safety, I've come up with

0:21:22 > 0:21:26'a genius idea that will keep our roofers light on their feet

0:21:26 > 0:21:27'and stop them falling off.'

0:21:28 > 0:21:32As you can see what I have done is taken the standard roofer, Dave,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34and attached a...!

0:21:34 > 0:21:37- This is the prototype, obviously. - Right, yeah.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40And Mark is holding onto him to make sure he doesn't take off.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Now, I think I've calculated it right,

0:21:43 > 0:21:46so when we release him he should become weightless...

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Right.- ..and able to move around on the roof.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51- You must hold onto him, though, ready?- I've got it, I've got it.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54- Got it?- Yeah. - And I'll hold you just in case.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56OK, three, two, one, release the builder.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- All right, so you're not taking off. - I feel weightless.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04Yes, and I should, therefore, with great ease, be able to

0:22:04 > 0:22:06lift you off the, erm...

0:22:06 > 0:22:09HE GROANS

0:22:09 > 0:22:11Nearly, nearly!

0:22:11 > 0:22:13I think it's going to take more than a few more balloons

0:22:13 > 0:22:15to get Dave off the ground, mate.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17Look at the size of the roofer you've picked.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21Surely you should have picked somebody slightly smaller.

0:22:21 > 0:22:22We're standard size.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23You are not standard size.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25We're standard size roofers.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28If this was the Dragons' Den and I was pitching this to you...

0:22:28 > 0:22:29- Yeah.- ..how would it go?

0:22:29 > 0:22:31I'm out.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33'They laughed at the Wright brothers,

0:22:33 > 0:22:36'but after a few alterations, who's laughing now?'

0:22:36 > 0:22:37Genius!

0:22:37 > 0:22:39'I told everyone it would work.'

0:22:39 > 0:22:40Genius!

0:22:40 > 0:22:44'Yes, if you take away the balloons and make a helium filled body suit,

0:22:44 > 0:22:46'it will work a treat.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49'This build seems to be bringing the inventor out in all of us.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51'Let's get back to Naomi's plan to bring some more light

0:22:51 > 0:22:55'into the kitchen and the people who are going to realise that for her.'

0:22:55 > 0:22:59- So, explain, cos we've got a hole in the roof here.- Yeah.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00And a window effectively here,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03cos this isn't a window that you can see through.

0:23:03 > 0:23:04It's a blocked window.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07Yeah, exactly, so what we've got is basically it's like a periscope,

0:23:07 > 0:23:10so we take the light down, it comes down square, and then the angles

0:23:10 > 0:23:13are all carefully worked out so that the sunlight hits it, whatever

0:23:13 > 0:23:16angle the light hits the mirror, and it comes off at the same angle.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19So you're stood there doing the washing up now looking at this wall,

0:23:19 > 0:23:22what are you looking at, a big bright white light in your face?

0:23:22 > 0:23:23No, you're looking at the sky.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26So it's like having a television screen of the sky?

0:23:26 > 0:23:29It's bizarre, you stand here and you're looking at the clouds.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- So you're almost like creators? - Yeah, we are.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34You're givers of light.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36'I shall look forward to seeing that.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38'Anyway, for now, our light-givers have to clear out

0:23:38 > 0:23:41'as the screed has arrived for the extension floors.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44'It's a sand and cement mix that will create a rock-solid base -

0:23:44 > 0:23:45'well, it should do anyway.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48'As we're so short of time an accelerator is added to the mix

0:23:48 > 0:23:51'to speed the drying process up by ten times,

0:23:51 > 0:23:55'so that the floors should be dry by tomorrow morning -

0:23:55 > 0:23:57'well, to keep us on schedule, see.'

0:23:57 > 0:24:00The floors are finished, we're pretty much where...

0:24:00 > 0:24:03as far as we can go cos we obviously can't get back on the floors.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06We're in a good place. Bring on tomorrow.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09'Yes, we're all feeling very, very, very positive.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11'What could possibly go wrong?'

0:24:14 > 0:24:18'Commuters may be only just on their way into the office but we're

0:24:18 > 0:24:21'already clocked on and Mark's come to see how the floor's doing.'

0:24:21 > 0:24:23HE TAPS FLOOR

0:24:25 > 0:24:26It hasn't gone off at all.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29My God, it's soaking wet, absolutely soaking wet.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36I'm going to have to close this all off. Nobody can get into there.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39I don't know what's gone wrong. Hold on.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41'Of all the builds in all the world,

0:24:41 > 0:24:43'this is one we didn't want to mess up on.'

0:24:45 > 0:24:47There is no accelerator in there.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49You're joking!

0:24:50 > 0:24:53We could lose the extension on that.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01Got bathrooms, wet room floors to put in, got all the disability stuff,

0:25:01 > 0:25:04nothing can happen in that building, absolutely nothing.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08That has seriously shafted us.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10Oh, my God, we're really in it.

0:25:10 > 0:25:11A millimetre an hour?

0:25:12 > 0:25:14And it's, what, 75 mil screed?

0:25:16 > 0:25:20OK, so, from half six last night I've got 75 hours.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22'Instead of overnight it's going to take three days

0:25:22 > 0:25:25'for the extension floors to set.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27'Fans might cut that down a bit,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30'but our schedule's been blown out of the water.'

0:25:32 > 0:25:34I've got eight plasterers stood up doing nothing,

0:25:34 > 0:25:38and I don't know where to put 'em, I don't know what to do with them.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39'It is our worst nightmare

0:25:39 > 0:25:41'to have people just stood around doing nothing.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43'With the whole extension out of bounds

0:25:43 > 0:25:45'half the build has come to a standstill.'

0:25:47 > 0:25:50You can pull back minutes, you can pull back hours,

0:25:50 > 0:25:53you can't pull a day back when there's only three days left.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55'So we're in a bit of a corner, really.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57'We just have to sit and watch a floor dry,

0:25:57 > 0:25:59'which is about as exciting as...

0:25:59 > 0:26:01'watching a floor dry.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04'We have to get on with whatever we can.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07'The fact is we've made a start boarding Charlie's ramp,

0:26:07 > 0:26:09'the extension walls are coming along,

0:26:09 > 0:26:12'and Chris is taking out his frustration on the back wall,

0:26:12 > 0:26:16'but the truth of the matter is we are really worried.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19'With everything so far behind the focus has turned upstairs to

0:26:19 > 0:26:20'the older boys' bedrooms

0:26:20 > 0:26:24'and Naomi has decided to take them out to get some

0:26:24 > 0:26:26'inspiration for the decor.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27'You see, Danny and Bradley both work

0:26:27 > 0:26:29'at their dad's alloy wheel shop,

0:26:29 > 0:26:32'and she wants to reflect their love of machines in her design.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34'So she's taken them shopping...

0:26:36 > 0:26:37'In a scrapyard.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42'Yes, it's a far cry from the West End, darling.'

0:26:42 > 0:26:44I feel like I've brought you to the right place

0:26:44 > 0:26:50cos I had an idea to find some really lovely car parts.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53There's probably not many people other than us three who...

0:26:53 > 0:26:56who think car parts could look lovely,

0:26:56 > 0:26:58but you think they can look lovely, right?

0:26:58 > 0:27:00And I think they could look lovely,

0:27:00 > 0:27:02so that's what we'd like to do,

0:27:02 > 0:27:08and create something decorative to go in one or both of your bedrooms.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09'Designers, eh?

0:27:10 > 0:27:11'Different planet.'

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I mean, there's loads of stuff here but I think what we need is

0:27:15 > 0:27:18something that we don't need to do too much to.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Nice alloy wheels there.

0:27:23 > 0:27:24That's quite interesting.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29People would pay good money for that, you know.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32And that. Those are quiet nice, actually.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Put that in the Tate Gallery, you'd make a fortune.

0:27:37 > 0:27:38'I wouldn't pay any money for that.'

0:27:38 > 0:27:40I love these brake discs here.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41What do you think? Brake pads.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43What do you call them? Pads? Discs?

0:27:43 > 0:27:46- That's quite cool. - Discs, yeah, they're brake discs.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49I think that... I mean, just that as a picture looks really nice,

0:27:49 > 0:27:53so how about we take a few of these as they are

0:27:53 > 0:27:55and, you know, put them on the wall.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58- Put them on the wall and stuff. - Dart them around, yeah.

0:27:58 > 0:27:59- Likey?- Yeah, no worries.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04Now, where can you get a shopping trolley here?

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Shall we go and look for one?

0:28:06 > 0:28:08'You know, I'm not sure it's going to work,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10'but the jury's still out on this one.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12'Let's see later, shall we?

0:28:12 > 0:28:15'Back at the house, the older boys' bedrooms and the kitchen/diner

0:28:15 > 0:28:19'are the only places inside that we've been able to get to.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21'The ground floor has been off limits all day,

0:28:21 > 0:28:24'and the floor still isn't dry.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26'Mark looks set for a sleepless night.

0:28:26 > 0:28:27'Not just him, all of us,

0:28:27 > 0:28:30'cos we can't get at the flipping thing.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33'I'm not sure I want to be around him in the morning if it hasn't dried.'

0:28:36 > 0:28:39'Well, it's a new day and a new day of expectation and hope.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43'Before we open the doors let's all join hands and hope that it's OK.'

0:28:43 > 0:28:46You going to come in with me in case I burst into tears?

0:28:46 > 0:28:47Yeah, I'll come in.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49'It is the moment of truth.'

0:28:52 > 0:28:54- Gone there, ain't it? - It's gone there.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58- It's gone there.- It still looks...

0:28:58 > 0:29:02Yeah, it's getting wetter as you go in, I can feel it. Spongy.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09It's... Oh, it's really soft in here.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11HE YELLS ANGRILY

0:29:12 > 0:29:14BLEEP, BLEEP!

0:29:14 > 0:29:15What a pile of BLEEP!

0:29:20 > 0:29:22He's coming at five o'clock for this.

0:29:22 > 0:29:24- To lay this floor?- Yeah.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26'Well, that's not going to happen, is it?

0:29:26 > 0:29:28'At times like this I usually have a dig at Mark's expense,

0:29:28 > 0:29:32'but to be honest this really is a disaster so I'll let it go.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35'Four of our seven rooms are still off-limits.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38'If we're to have any chance of completing this job,

0:29:38 > 0:29:40'we need to get ahead everywhere else,

0:29:40 > 0:29:42'and it means doubling up on jobs.'

0:29:45 > 0:29:48You've got probably 14 people, the only work that can be done is

0:29:48 > 0:29:51in the kitchen area, so you've got 14 people all queuing up,

0:29:51 > 0:29:56standing, leaning over each other, doing what they can to keep busy.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00D'you ever put a brand-new kitchen in with a plasterer

0:30:00 > 0:30:02plastering over your head?

0:30:02 > 0:30:05First time we've ever had this before.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07- It's a different scenario. - It certainly is.

0:30:07 > 0:30:11'But truth is no matter how on the ropes we are everybody is

0:30:11 > 0:30:14'determined to make this work because it's for a very special boy

0:30:14 > 0:30:16'who's fought much tougher battles than this.'

0:30:18 > 0:30:20Among all the considerations,

0:30:20 > 0:30:23not putting your child into care

0:30:23 > 0:30:25is at the top of the list.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28To put Charlie in care was not an option.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31You know, we, we would not give up on one of our sons,

0:30:31 > 0:30:34cos that would, that would finish Jen off.

0:30:34 > 0:30:35It would.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38And to see her eyes, to see it in her eyes...

0:30:40 > 0:30:42..if Charlie ever left her side,

0:30:42 > 0:30:45it would destroy her, I think, it really would.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48It would be a very sad and emotional time for her,

0:30:48 > 0:30:51and for me, but I've got to be strong for Jen, you know,

0:30:51 > 0:30:52I've got to be the rock here.

0:30:54 > 0:30:56There is not a cure for what Charlie's got,

0:30:56 > 0:31:01so you've just got to make the best of what you can for him now.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03He's a great lad, and if I could swap places with Charlie,

0:31:03 > 0:31:05I'd do it, I'd do it.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08I would love Charlie to see the world through my eyes.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12The difficulty is you couldn't continue to look after him safely

0:31:12 > 0:31:15- at home but you were hitting that crisis point.- Things were tough...

0:31:15 > 0:31:18And as hard as you were working to get towards making that change,

0:31:18 > 0:31:20it weren't going to happen, was it?

0:31:20 > 0:31:23No, we still was a long way away.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25I'd done so much work to the house myself,

0:31:25 > 0:31:27I wanted to carry on that.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30Do you love me? I love you too.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33You want to look after your family and see them all right.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35But it's too big. You couldn't do this on your own?

0:31:35 > 0:31:37It was, yeah.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39I felt I'd failed as a father.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42It's my responsibility. I want to provide for my family,

0:31:42 > 0:31:45and now I'm asking for help, which I find quite difficult.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47So what do you think was the toughest moment

0:31:47 > 0:31:48over the last few years?

0:31:48 > 0:31:50Watching Jen struggle.

0:31:50 > 0:31:51That, that affects me,

0:31:51 > 0:31:53that upsets me a lot.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57Watching her do the stuff she does,

0:31:57 > 0:32:00and she...she never, ever complains, ever.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04She's such an angel, she really is, she's my angel,

0:32:04 > 0:32:06and, erm...

0:32:08 > 0:32:12..and she really is solid for the family, she's, really, really good,

0:32:12 > 0:32:16she's tough, she's a tough girl, and I'm really proud of her.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18So why haven't you married her?

0:32:19 > 0:32:22I thought you'd get me on this!

0:32:22 > 0:32:25Well, that's the next thing, that's the next thing.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30Now we've come to a point where Charlie's... Charlie's hopefully going to be happy,

0:32:30 > 0:32:31it's the next step.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38'Well, for Scott and Jenny it's always been about Charlie.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40'They won't even consider getting married until he's safe.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42'The way things are going on-site,

0:32:42 > 0:32:45'we may not be able to set this right in time.'

0:32:46 > 0:32:49This is the most important part of this build.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52You know, we're finishing the old house off for the family,

0:32:52 > 0:32:55but this is really, really important.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57This is all about the boy.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00This whole building is about the boy,

0:33:00 > 0:33:03and everybody cares about it so much.

0:33:04 > 0:33:08To be perfectly honest with you, I feel really emotional about it.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11You wouldn't think you'd want to cry over a building site but I...

0:33:11 > 0:33:15I would like to have a wee cry about this building because it's so sad.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19'It's kind of knocked the stuffing out of all of us.

0:33:19 > 0:33:20'We need something to pick us up,

0:33:20 > 0:33:24'and here is the light literally at the end of the tunnel.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27'Naomi's futuristic lighting feature needs to be fitted,

0:33:27 > 0:33:30'but it means they've got to get in to Jenny and Scott's bedroom.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34'And with the floor still damp, they've laid down some boards,

0:33:34 > 0:33:36'but they'll need to be quick and careful.'

0:33:40 > 0:33:42How we looking, how we looking?

0:33:46 > 0:33:49- Oh, my God! - LAUGHTER

0:33:49 > 0:33:52- Ooh, that's frightening, Chris. - Flipping heck.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57'It's kind of space-age, isn't it?

0:33:57 > 0:34:00'This colossal job just keeps getting bigger.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03'1,000 linear metres of decking has just arrived

0:34:03 > 0:34:06'for the outside living area, which will transform

0:34:06 > 0:34:09'Charlie's access to his home if we can get it down in time.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13'From day one it's Billy who's found the scale of this job difficult,

0:34:13 > 0:34:16'but I've got just the tonic.'

0:34:16 > 0:34:17Bill! I'm glad I've found you.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20Listen, I know how you like to help out on these kind of things

0:34:20 > 0:34:23so I've signed you up for a charity walk this evening.

0:34:23 > 0:34:24- Is that all right?- That's lovely.

0:34:24 > 0:34:26I like a nice long walk in the evenings.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28This is actually quite a short walk in actual fact,

0:34:28 > 0:34:30shouldn't take you very long at all.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32- Oh, that's even better, I can get back to work.- Yeah.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35But it's turning a bit nasty and cold, will I be all right?

0:34:35 > 0:34:36Do I need to wrap up?

0:34:36 > 0:34:40- Bill, I think I can safely say you'll be plenty warm enough.- Oh.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43'Yes, all right, we're setting something up for later,

0:34:43 > 0:34:45'you'll see in a short while.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47'It's been two days now since we laid those floors.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50'Please let there be some good news!'

0:34:55 > 0:34:57Good floor, that.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59'Yes, the floors are finally dry

0:34:59 > 0:35:03'and ready to be topped off with a latex coating! Whoo-hoo!'

0:35:06 > 0:35:08HE HOOTS

0:35:08 > 0:35:11'And as the night owls remind us...'

0:35:11 > 0:35:12Night-night, Jules.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15'..that the night is closing in, we can all relax a bit

0:35:15 > 0:35:18'knowing the floors are going to be ready in the morning.

0:35:18 > 0:35:22'It's a relief, and we know tomorrow there's a lot of catching-up to do,

0:35:22 > 0:35:24'but for now it's time for Billy to unwind with his evening stroll.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26'I told you we'd set it up for later.'

0:35:26 > 0:35:29This is nice, Bill, innit? Nice little charity walk for you.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32- Yeah, Knowlsey said it ain't too long.- No, short one.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35There you go, mate, there's your walk.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37Yeah, all right, yeah.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39No, seriously you've got to walk along them ashes.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43D'you remember that time you went swimming with the sharks?

0:35:43 > 0:35:46Yeah, it was lovely, lovely. No fear, no fear.

0:35:46 > 0:35:48That's the same attitude you've got to have here,

0:35:48 > 0:35:51but without your shoes and socks on. You'll be fine.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53'There's no getting out of this.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54The family are here to cheer you on.'

0:35:54 > 0:35:56Have you done it before?

0:35:56 > 0:35:58I've done it for charity, yeah, yeah, I've done it,

0:35:58 > 0:36:00and it's, er, yeah, it's really good, you'll enjoy it.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02- It's empowering. - Yeah, it's empowering.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04- Have you done it, Jenny? - I've done it.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06- And who else is going to do this with me?- We all are.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08Oh, lovely, lovely.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10We're doing this for Charlie, yeah?

0:36:10 > 0:36:14'Now, you can't do this without some kind of special instruction, Bill,

0:36:14 > 0:36:18'and who better than world record holding fire-walker, Scott Bell.

0:36:18 > 0:36:19'Look at Billy's face!'

0:36:21 > 0:36:23Are you ready to go fire walking?

0:36:23 > 0:36:26'This is all a case of mind over matter -

0:36:26 > 0:36:29'thankfully we've got one of the finest minds in the country.'

0:36:29 > 0:36:34It's 682 centigrade, that's six times boiling point.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37Yeah, nearly seven times hotter than boiling water.

0:36:40 > 0:36:42- Go on, Byrnsey! - C'mon, son!

0:36:42 > 0:36:45BILLY BREATHES DEEPLY

0:36:45 > 0:36:48- Go on, just do it. - Go on, son! Go on, Billy.

0:36:48 > 0:36:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:49 > 0:36:52'Whoo-hoo! Byrne by name, burn by...

0:36:52 > 0:36:54'I think I'll stop there.'

0:36:55 > 0:36:59- Charlie, was that good? - Oh, he missed it.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02- Did you see that? - Can you do it again?

0:37:03 > 0:37:05'Go on, Dad, go on.

0:37:05 > 0:37:06'Oh, very casual.

0:37:08 > 0:37:12'In fact the whole family seem to be pulling it off without all the drama

0:37:12 > 0:37:14'that Bill was throwing into the mix.

0:37:14 > 0:37:15'They're showing him up a bit.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18'But when you think what this family has been through,

0:37:18 > 0:37:21'walking on hot coals is the least of the things they've had to face.'

0:37:23 > 0:37:24Gosh...

0:37:24 > 0:37:27Positive thinking, don't fear. Do you know, that's amazing.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34'It looks such a peaceful morning, doesn't it?

0:37:34 > 0:37:37'But that couldn't be further from the truth, we are miles behind

0:37:37 > 0:37:39'on our biggest home build ever.'

0:37:41 > 0:37:44We've essentially built another entire house on the side,

0:37:44 > 0:37:48and then the decking and, erm, and, er, disability ramp,

0:37:48 > 0:37:52which you can see being filled in here, is the size of another house.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54It's just vast.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56'This is a house of two halves -

0:37:56 > 0:37:59'if you look upstairs we're on the home straight.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03'But downside it's turmoil and we've only got two days left.'

0:38:08 > 0:38:10I just can't believe the size of this thing -

0:38:10 > 0:38:12it's so huge it's ridiculous.

0:38:12 > 0:38:14This has been very nearly beyond us, this one,

0:38:14 > 0:38:15but it's amazing,

0:38:15 > 0:38:18just more and more people keep turning up to do the work.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20'And it's not just the builders

0:38:20 > 0:38:22'producing the goods, let me tell you.'

0:38:22 > 0:38:24- Oh, Sue. - I've brought some cakes.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26- So this is Sue... - Hello, Sue.- Hi.

0:38:26 > 0:38:28..who has taken a week off work to bake for us.

0:38:28 > 0:38:30'There are eight attached cottages

0:38:30 > 0:38:32'in this little community out in the countryside,

0:38:32 > 0:38:35'and all the neighbours like Sue have acted like a life support

0:38:35 > 0:38:38'for the family - literally.'

0:38:38 > 0:38:42First Christmas, Christmas Day, erm, he stopped breathing,

0:38:42 > 0:38:45and Jenny came running up and just said,

0:38:45 > 0:38:47"Help me, he's stopped breathing."

0:38:47 > 0:38:51And I just put First Aid training into play

0:38:51 > 0:38:54and gladly we got him back but, erm, yeah, he's still here today,

0:38:54 > 0:38:55and that's down to the family.

0:38:55 > 0:38:56They are just so close.

0:38:56 > 0:38:59- And a little bit down to you. - And you.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02Well, I just did, I just did what I had to do on the day and...

0:39:02 > 0:39:05And now do what you have to do here as well with the cakes.

0:39:05 > 0:39:07And it's far nicer baking cakes for builders.

0:39:07 > 0:39:08Go and feed your 5,000.

0:39:08 > 0:39:1080 is bad enough.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12Thank you, Sue.

0:39:12 > 0:39:14'The energy is definitely up on-site -

0:39:14 > 0:39:16'maybe it's the sugar in all those cakes.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19'But we're at that wonderful stage where Naomi's design ideas

0:39:19 > 0:39:20'are taking shape.

0:39:20 > 0:39:23'Danny's getting a stylized map of Kent on his wall,

0:39:23 > 0:39:27'and Bradley's room has an urban vibe with reclaimed floorboards

0:39:27 > 0:39:29'and those car parts dotted about the place.'

0:39:32 > 0:39:36I like the sort of industrial feel to it, almost like warehouse...

0:39:36 > 0:39:38- Yeah, lofty. It's a lofty loft. - Yeah.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43'Down in the extension, things are finally moving quickly,

0:39:43 > 0:39:45'the plasterers are in,

0:39:45 > 0:39:49'and a waterproof coating is going down in the wet room.'

0:39:51 > 0:39:54Two hours' time and all of this will be finished.

0:39:54 > 0:39:56'D'you know what? I'm starting to believe him.

0:39:56 > 0:39:59'We feel like having let this build get away from us

0:39:59 > 0:40:03'we're gaining on it fast, we can almost smell the finish line.

0:40:03 > 0:40:05'All this is for Charlie,

0:40:05 > 0:40:09'but will he understand the changes that have been made?'

0:40:09 > 0:40:10Forgive me for asking,

0:40:10 > 0:40:13but how much is Charlie aware of everything going on around him?

0:40:13 > 0:40:17Sometimes he can be quite unresponsive and quite sleepy

0:40:17 > 0:40:20and you don't get much from him, but there's big windows

0:40:20 > 0:40:22where if you're looking, if you really see him,

0:40:22 > 0:40:25when you see into his little soul that he's just a delight,

0:40:25 > 0:40:28he's just, he's everything.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31So you genuinely feel blessed to have Charlie?

0:40:31 > 0:40:35I do, yeah, he's taught me much more than I've ever taught him.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37- Really?- Yeah, definitely.

0:40:39 > 0:40:43'He doesn't judge anyone, he doesn't expect anything,

0:40:43 > 0:40:45'he...he's so innocent, isn't he?'

0:40:45 > 0:40:48He is pure innocence.

0:40:48 > 0:40:52We should all take a leaf out of his book, shouldn't we?

0:40:52 > 0:40:55I mean, there is enormous difficulty that comes with

0:40:55 > 0:40:58having a child with the disabilities that Charlie has.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00I don't see it that way.

0:41:00 > 0:41:02- You don't at all?- No.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05Our first child, Sophie, she didn't make it.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08She was only three-and-a-half weeks when she died.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12You know, if you lose a parent, you're an orphan,

0:41:12 > 0:41:15but when you lose a child there's no name to it.

0:41:15 > 0:41:16It's one of the hardest things.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21That's what made me accept, because a lot of people struggle

0:41:21 > 0:41:23with the, you know, oh, you expected the normal baby,

0:41:23 > 0:41:26expected, you know, the same as my boys,

0:41:26 > 0:41:28you know, they're going to meet all these milestones

0:41:28 > 0:41:31and they're going to do this and they're going to do that...

0:41:31 > 0:41:35Having already lost Sophie, it didn't matter for Charlie

0:41:35 > 0:41:38not to do things like that because he was here still,

0:41:38 > 0:41:40and knowing he might not have been

0:41:40 > 0:41:43and I could have had to have gone through that again,

0:41:43 > 0:41:45them things don't matter any more.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49You look past them, you judge your successes

0:41:49 > 0:41:52and your life in a different way once you have a special needs child,

0:41:52 > 0:41:55and you're looking more at the person and the soul

0:41:55 > 0:41:57than if he walks, if he talks.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59Them things, it doesn't matter any more.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04When you go to sleep at night what do you wish for?

0:42:04 > 0:42:06That he's there in the morning.

0:42:07 > 0:42:11Really? It's that much of a pressing issue, is it?

0:42:11 > 0:42:12Yeah.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17That he might not be here for ever,

0:42:17 > 0:42:19more than likely won't be,

0:42:19 > 0:42:24but it's living with that fear, and not knowing when he's ill

0:42:24 > 0:42:27cos he can't talk or anything,

0:42:27 > 0:42:30that you can't always make things better.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33I'm not sure how long anybody could live with that pressure.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35You don't get any other choice.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44So how much was the house getting in the way of family?

0:42:44 > 0:42:48It was fighting against us to the point that we did get desperate.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51You realised you had to make a decision about having to put

0:42:51 > 0:42:55Charlie into care for his safety and security.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57No, I could never have done that.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59You couldn't have done it?

0:42:59 > 0:43:01But you might have had to have done?

0:43:01 > 0:43:04That's the scary bit, that's the point I got to, you know...

0:43:04 > 0:43:06If no-one helps, what do we do?

0:43:07 > 0:43:09It was getting to there.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12So for you guys to come in means a lot.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14We can carry on being a family,

0:43:14 > 0:43:16and that means everything.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23'That's why it's so important,

0:43:23 > 0:43:25'not just to make a family's life easier,

0:43:25 > 0:43:27'but to keep them together.

0:43:27 > 0:43:29'But it's going down to the wire, it really is.

0:43:29 > 0:43:32'Catching up in the extension is the real problem,

0:43:32 > 0:43:35'and the floorers can't get in till everyone else has left -

0:43:35 > 0:43:37'so they were here till very, very late.'

0:43:39 > 0:43:42'Now, with hours to go, the equipment that will make such a difference

0:43:42 > 0:43:46'to Charlie's life is finally being installed inside and out.'

0:43:49 > 0:43:50Look at this!

0:43:51 > 0:43:54- Good ain't it?- Yeah!

0:43:54 > 0:43:55Wow!

0:43:55 > 0:43:56- Hello. - Hello. Steve.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58So this is the lift.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01Basically you've got a cantilevered cabin that goes up to this level.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04You've got to love a cantilever, haven't you? Haven't you?

0:44:04 > 0:44:05How high does that go?

0:44:07 > 0:44:08To level with this floor here.

0:44:11 > 0:44:14That's not going to work, is it?

0:44:14 > 0:44:17You pilchard! You haven't measured it, have you?

0:44:17 > 0:44:18We need to move the...

0:44:18 > 0:44:21We need to have the lift slightly further this way.

0:44:21 > 0:44:22Well, we can't, can we?

0:44:22 > 0:44:26You should have put the concrete a little bit that way, shouldn't you?

0:44:26 > 0:44:29Well, no, that was the whole idea was to come from this deck level

0:44:29 > 0:44:31up to that deck level.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34Cos now we've got to start cutting holes in the roof.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37'Better crack on, then, Jules, we're running out of time.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39'It's the final push and there's a real buzz on-site.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42'Well, it's the buzz of power tools, to be honest, drills,

0:44:42 > 0:44:43'and cutting holes in the roof.

0:44:44 > 0:44:48'We're making things pretty, Jules is righting his wrongs,

0:44:48 > 0:44:49'it's a race against time,

0:44:49 > 0:44:52'and we're all a little bit delirious to be fair.'

0:44:55 > 0:44:58- It's actually very nice.- Happy?

0:44:58 > 0:45:00'You can see how rarely she is happy by his face, can't you?

0:45:00 > 0:45:04'The garden is really taking shape with lovely flat turf going down,

0:45:04 > 0:45:06'which is ideal for wheelchair use.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12'What are you doing, gentlemen?

0:45:12 > 0:45:14'The windows get its finishing touches

0:45:14 > 0:45:16'so all the sunlight can stream in, it's lovely.

0:45:16 > 0:45:17'And we've cut the right hole.

0:45:20 > 0:45:22'Yeah, a bit emotional.

0:45:25 > 0:45:30'Nine days ago we met a family whose home threatened to tear them apart.'

0:45:32 > 0:45:35We did get desperate. It was hard.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38Carrying a 13-year-old up the stairs weighing 35 kilos...

0:45:39 > 0:45:41It takes a toll on you.

0:45:41 > 0:45:45But throughout this time they've always stayed positive.

0:45:45 > 0:45:46It's pick yourself up.

0:45:46 > 0:45:48Pick yourself up, dust yourself off.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50- Carry on.- And fight.

0:45:50 > 0:45:52My parents put on a brave face through it all

0:45:52 > 0:45:56but, I think, deep down inside, they are struggling quite a bit.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58'Putting Charlie into care and splitting the family up

0:45:58 > 0:46:00'just wasn't an option.'

0:46:00 > 0:46:05He's our son, and you...you don't give up on your children. Never.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08'But for dad Scott reaching out for help did not come easy.'

0:46:09 > 0:46:11It's my responsibility.

0:46:11 > 0:46:12I want to provide for my family,

0:46:12 > 0:46:16and now I'm asking for help which I find quite difficult.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19'But when he did ask we called in the troops.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22'Now Scott and his family can look forward to a better future.'

0:46:26 > 0:46:30'Wow, wow, just look at the size of this.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33'In the kitchen we've removed the wall to the living room

0:46:33 > 0:46:37'to create a massive open space that Charlie can move around freely.

0:46:38 > 0:46:41'A large dining table and seating area has been added

0:46:41 > 0:46:44'so that he can join the family for mealtimes.

0:46:46 > 0:46:49'A special window feature boosts the natural light into every corner

0:46:49 > 0:46:52'and some of the old features of the house have been integrated into

0:46:52 > 0:46:56'the new to keep that cottagey vibe which was all-important to Jenny.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01'Creating four new rooms has made a relaxing living area which

0:47:01 > 0:47:03'all the family can enjoy together.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06'Charlie has a new bedroom on the ground floor

0:47:06 > 0:47:09'meaning those dangerous stairs are a thing of the past,

0:47:09 > 0:47:12'with an en-suite wet room and hoist system.

0:47:12 > 0:47:16'Bath time will no longer be a back-breaking family affair.

0:47:18 > 0:47:21'Scott and Jenny's new bedroom is right next to Charlie,

0:47:21 > 0:47:24'so they can be on hand throughout the night,

0:47:24 > 0:47:27'and it will be a haven for them to unwind.

0:47:29 > 0:47:32'Upstairs the two boys who never asked for anything

0:47:32 > 0:47:35'finally have the space they deserve.

0:47:35 > 0:47:38'Now for the first time Danny can stand tall in his own room,

0:47:38 > 0:47:42'and Bradley has finally got a bedroom fit for a young man.

0:47:44 > 0:47:46'Look how beautiful a loft room this is!

0:47:49 > 0:47:53'Outside a huge living area has been built with a side ramp

0:47:53 > 0:47:57'to give Charlie access in and out of the house.

0:47:57 > 0:48:00'And so that he can enjoy the entire garden

0:48:00 > 0:48:02'a lift has been added too.

0:48:03 > 0:48:04'But let's start inside -

0:48:04 > 0:48:07'I wonder if after all they've been through

0:48:07 > 0:48:10'Mum and Dad will believe what they see?'

0:48:10 > 0:48:12If you're ready, open your eyes.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14You can go first.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16Oh, my God!

0:48:18 > 0:48:20It's beautiful.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22I can't work out where I am.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24We've got no walls left.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26- No!- No walls!

0:48:28 > 0:48:29Words can't express...

0:48:29 > 0:48:32- We have space!- Space!

0:48:34 > 0:48:36JENNY SOBS

0:48:41 > 0:48:44- Its flow and accessibility... - It feels so big.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48It does, doesn't it, and airy? That kitchen is lovely.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51Go and have a look at it, it's your kitchen.

0:48:51 > 0:48:54- I'm coming with you. - Plenty of space to move around,

0:48:54 > 0:48:57and the floor is flat all the way through, which is important.

0:48:57 > 0:49:01We've never had the space, I just want to run around with my arms out.

0:49:01 > 0:49:02Walking around chairs and tables

0:49:02 > 0:49:05- and banging into each other and... - Yeah.

0:49:05 > 0:49:08- And it still feels cottagey, that's what I love.- It does.

0:49:08 > 0:49:12- Was that important to you?- Yeah, well, you know, it is a cottage.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16The view out over the fields,

0:49:16 > 0:49:18except it isn't a view out over the fields, is it?

0:49:18 > 0:49:20If you look at it, you're looking directly up at the sky,

0:49:20 > 0:49:23- so to bring the light in... - It's an optical illusion.

0:49:23 > 0:49:25- ..we've created a window. - Oh, my God.

0:49:25 > 0:49:28- That's clever. - That is very clever, yeah.

0:49:28 > 0:49:31- Heavens above. - Literally.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33Yeah, it is heavens above!

0:49:36 > 0:49:39- This is all new.- Oh!

0:49:39 > 0:49:41This wasn't part of our house before.

0:49:41 > 0:49:43Yeah, this is new, so that kitchen-diner,

0:49:43 > 0:49:46- that was your whole...- That was the whole house before.- Yeah.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48So we can actually all sit down.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50Sit down together, yeah.

0:49:50 > 0:49:52How can you possibly get this done in nine days?

0:49:52 > 0:49:54It's not possible.

0:49:54 > 0:49:55So we leave the living room,

0:49:55 > 0:49:58and there's a connecting corridor that comes to this door,

0:49:58 > 0:50:03which is your access now, so we've put a bit of a ramp up outside,

0:50:03 > 0:50:05so when he comes in his front door here,

0:50:05 > 0:50:08he'll either go into the living room and family area that way,

0:50:08 > 0:50:11or he goes this way into his bedroom. Do you want...?

0:50:11 > 0:50:13No, I don't, I'm going to go already.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18- This is kind of the big area of it, isn't it?- This is what we needed.

0:50:19 > 0:50:22SHE SOBS

0:50:22 > 0:50:23- Sorry.- It's all right.

0:50:28 > 0:50:30The whole house, it wasn't about us,

0:50:30 > 0:50:32it was about what we needed for Charlie,

0:50:32 > 0:50:35and to know that I've got that without even seeing it...

0:50:35 > 0:50:37It just means so much.

0:50:49 > 0:50:50Speechless.

0:50:54 > 0:50:57- We haven't got to carry him upstairs- any more. No, I know.

0:51:00 > 0:51:01That is fantastic.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05A mechanically controlled bed, you know all about these,

0:51:05 > 0:51:08electronic beds that you can move and shape and so forth.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11It's a proper little grown-up boy's room as well, isn't it?

0:51:11 > 0:51:12It kind of is, innit?

0:51:12 > 0:51:14Is it all right?

0:51:14 > 0:51:16It's more than all right, it's perfect.

0:51:18 > 0:51:19It's fantastic, I love it.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22- We've got a hoist.- Yeah, the hoist, that's the other...

0:51:22 > 0:51:23Obviously, this hoist will help him

0:51:23 > 0:51:26to get through to the other key room here.

0:51:26 > 0:51:28- Bathroom.- Yeah.

0:51:28 > 0:51:29Would you like to, erm...?

0:51:31 > 0:51:33And I'll drag the hoist through with me.

0:51:35 > 0:51:37- It's amazing.- Wet room/bathroom.

0:51:38 > 0:51:40And this was the hardest bit for us.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45This is what made life tough, trying to get him out of the bath.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48- It took three of us. - This is a special bath as well.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51Thermal in two ways. One, you can set the temperature to make sure

0:51:51 > 0:51:53the temperature is always absolutely right,

0:51:53 > 0:51:58also double thermally insulated so that it gets colder slower,

0:51:58 > 0:52:01cos I know with the body temperature regulation is kind of difficult.

0:52:01 > 0:52:03His own bedroom and bathroom, I mean...

0:52:03 > 0:52:05we could only but dream of stuff like this.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13- Secret hideaway room. - Oh, wow.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15Look at that.

0:52:15 > 0:52:17We wanted to give you some sort of glitz and glam so it felt like,

0:52:17 > 0:52:20when you're in here it's like a boutique hotel room.

0:52:20 > 0:52:22- It is.- I can just jump out of bed and run next door.

0:52:22 > 0:52:25And none of this having to run around in the middle of the night

0:52:25 > 0:52:27trying to scrabble round to get to him.

0:52:27 > 0:52:31You're right next door, he's right next to the wet room/bathroom.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35At the end of the day we only asked for a bedroom,

0:52:35 > 0:52:37and you've done so much more than that.

0:52:37 > 0:52:40I'm going to go again...! SHE LAUGHS THROUGH TEARS

0:52:40 > 0:52:41Sorry.

0:52:43 > 0:52:46Looking down... Step forward, look up.

0:52:49 > 0:52:52- OK, that's a bit more than a ramp. - Oh!

0:52:52 > 0:52:54Not only is the house huge...

0:52:54 > 0:52:57- Oh.- Look at this.- That's clever.

0:52:59 > 0:53:02You've got a seating area so the lads can be out here

0:53:02 > 0:53:04with their friends and it's a cool place to be.

0:53:07 > 0:53:08Hello!

0:53:09 > 0:53:11- Charlie!- Wow, look.

0:53:12 > 0:53:16I think this is a family moment so I'm going to keep out of the way.

0:53:16 > 0:53:19Why don't you guys show the family round the house?

0:53:19 > 0:53:21C'mon on then.

0:53:21 > 0:53:22Charlie's bedroom.

0:53:24 > 0:53:27This is Charlie's bedroom.

0:53:27 > 0:53:31- Unbelievable.- Can't comprehend, can you?- Absolutely unbelievable.

0:53:31 > 0:53:33Are you coming to have a look in here?

0:53:33 > 0:53:35Look, it's your bedroom, eh?

0:53:39 > 0:53:41'The boys said this was all about Charlie,

0:53:41 > 0:53:44'but now's the time for them to see their rooms.'

0:53:44 > 0:53:46BOYS LAUGH

0:53:48 > 0:53:50No. Check that out.

0:53:53 > 0:53:55Is this really my room?

0:53:55 > 0:53:57Yeah. It is, yeah.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00Your own self-contained flat, reclaimed timber,

0:54:00 > 0:54:02brick wall, little bit industrial.

0:54:02 > 0:54:04- Yeah.- Your clutch plates from the scrapyard

0:54:04 > 0:54:06- when you went on tour with Naomi. - Yeah, I see them there.

0:54:06 > 0:54:08Which kind of look cool.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10Yeah, they kind of fit in with the rustic..

0:54:10 > 0:54:12It goes together with the wall and the wood.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15I can't take it all in, I really can't.

0:54:15 > 0:54:19You deserve this. You know, you're a great lad and...
