0:00:02 > 0:00:04We all have plans, don't we? Fall in love, have kids
0:00:04 > 0:00:08and look forward to making those precious memories together.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11But it doesn't always turn out that way.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14No-one had any idea what was going to come.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17You know, it was just, erm, a huge shock, really.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20I just couldn't stop crying.
0:00:22 > 0:00:23We're here to help a young family
0:00:23 > 0:00:27who are faced with an uncertain future.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29I feel like the pair of them
0:00:29 > 0:00:33have been dealt the worst hand of cards going.
0:00:33 > 0:00:36It's a situation we simply couldn't ignore.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39What he wants to do is make positive memories
0:00:39 > 0:00:41and he don't want to be disabled by the house.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44I'm determined to sort of carry on.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47And I, as a dad of two kids... You often think,
0:00:47 > 0:00:50"God, if something happened to me, would my kids remember me?"
0:00:52 > 0:00:56So, with help from East Yorkshire's local trades,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58we're going to build a family home
0:00:58 > 0:01:01where they can start making those happy memories together.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04All the usual suspects are here and we have just nine days
0:01:04 > 0:01:08to pull off this enormous build, which means we need a large army.
0:01:08 > 0:01:09SOUNDTRACK CUTS OUT
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Aren't you going to be a bit busy?
0:01:11 > 0:01:12Aha!
0:01:12 > 0:01:14We might have a chance after all.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!
0:01:17 > 0:01:19ALL CHEER
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Social workers Liz and Jason live just outside of Hull
0:01:32 > 0:01:37with their two girls, three-year-old Lily, 18-month-old Poppy...
0:01:37 > 0:01:40One, two, three - weeee!
0:01:40 > 0:01:43..along with Liz's older daughter, 20-year-old Emily.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46The couple met at the end of 2009.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49We actually met through Facebook
0:01:49 > 0:01:52and then we kind of went from there, really.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56After a whirlwind romance, they married nine months later,
0:01:56 > 0:02:00and their first daughter, Lily, followed soon after.
0:02:01 > 0:02:06- You going to sit on the chair? Good girl.- Yay!
0:02:06 > 0:02:11But in January 2011, the family's lives turned upside down when
0:02:11 > 0:02:17Jason started experiencing worrying symptoms that couldn't be explained.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20He started to have these horrendous headaches,
0:02:20 > 0:02:25these migraine-type headaches which completely incapacitated him.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28We got an emergency appointment at the doctor's
0:02:28 > 0:02:31and he really went downhill, he really deteriorated.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33I kind of knew something wasn't right. I mean,
0:02:33 > 0:02:37I did cognitive tests, and it was like an empty clock,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39and they'd say, "Can you draw four o'clock?"
0:02:39 > 0:02:41I didn't even draw round the clock.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44And then just trying to send a simple text message,
0:02:44 > 0:02:45just couldn't do it.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48And they said at that time, they didn't know
0:02:48 > 0:02:50whether he'd recover or not and, you know, we'd only been
0:02:50 > 0:02:52married five months and you think
0:02:52 > 0:02:55everything is going to be a bed of roses, really.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58It was just a huge shock, really.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03The problem was they were continuously trying to do tests.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05That's when they...
0:03:07 > 0:03:08..diagnosed the Fabry's.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11Go over there, sit at that end,
0:03:11 > 0:03:13cos Mummy is going to help Daddy get his shirt on.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17Fabry's is a rare, life-limiting disease.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21It means over time, the body starts to poison itself,
0:03:21 > 0:03:23damaging all the major organs.
0:03:25 > 0:03:27He's got hearing loss in both ears,
0:03:27 > 0:03:29he's got cardiomyopathy
0:03:29 > 0:03:32with his heart, he's got kidney failure,
0:03:32 > 0:03:35he's got severe gastrointestinal problems,
0:03:35 > 0:03:38he's at high risk of having a stroke.
0:03:39 > 0:03:44As it transpires, it's been affecting me all my life.
0:03:44 > 0:03:45To help manage his illness,
0:03:45 > 0:03:48Jason has enzyme replacement therapy.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52No, no, no, no, no, you'll pull it out of Daddy's arm. No.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56This treatment slows down the effects of the disease.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Just sort of the knowledge that the experts are happy
0:03:59 > 0:04:02that my kidney and my heart are doing all right,
0:04:02 > 0:04:04erm, and obviously they're constantly
0:04:04 > 0:04:07under review, so from that side of things,
0:04:07 > 0:04:10I'm quite happy with that.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13Soon after coming to terms with this dreadful illness,
0:04:13 > 0:04:17they were rewarded with the birth of their second little girl, Poppy.
0:04:18 > 0:04:19It was fantastic.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21I didn't know whether I'd be able to have any more children because,
0:04:21 > 0:04:24obviously, I was a bit older and it's a long time
0:04:24 > 0:04:25since I'd had my children.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27It was a fantastic surprise, really.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30But, as the family grew, Jason started to experience
0:04:30 > 0:04:33severe muscle spasms and weight loss,
0:04:33 > 0:04:36which are unrelated to his Fabry's disease,
0:04:36 > 0:04:38and so went back for more tests.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40He'd been referred to Liverpool, to, erm,
0:04:40 > 0:04:43a professor of neurology to see if he could figure out
0:04:43 > 0:04:44what was wrong with him,
0:04:44 > 0:04:47and he came and sat next to me and he said,
0:04:47 > 0:04:49"I'm not going to lie to you, you're an intelligent woman,
0:04:49 > 0:04:51"Jason's got motor neurone disease."
0:04:53 > 0:04:56This second diagnosis of motor neurone disease
0:04:56 > 0:04:58affects the brain's ability to control muscle movement.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01It causes the body to simply waste away.
0:05:03 > 0:05:04The form Jason has
0:05:04 > 0:05:07means he has a life expectancy of up to three years.
0:05:09 > 0:05:13I spent the next three days crying, and I just couldn't stop crying.
0:05:15 > 0:05:21On a day-to-day basis, erm, you try and forget about it.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24But Jason is refusing to be beaten.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28You know, the kids have still got to be looked after.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31Job has still got to be done.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Whether it's possible or not, I still want to beat it.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37Although he won't give up,
0:05:37 > 0:05:41he now depends heavily on Liz and step-daughter Emily
0:05:41 > 0:05:43and they are determined to fight this together.
0:05:43 > 0:05:47I feel like the pair of them have been dealt the worst
0:05:47 > 0:05:51hand of cards going. I mean, fair enough, they've found each other.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53They've found happiness, they've got the kids.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55You know, he's in his 30s.
0:05:55 > 0:05:59The fact that he's eventually maybe not going to be here
0:05:59 > 0:06:02and Mum is going to have to single-handedly raise
0:06:02 > 0:06:05the children, they didn't expect that when Mum got pregnant.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10Jason, who qualified as an electrician,
0:06:10 > 0:06:13was in the middle of rewiring their home when he became ill,
0:06:13 > 0:06:16and it's been like this for the last four years.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20It's simply not safe for his two young children.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23They have no hot water, the house is leaking,
0:06:23 > 0:06:26and this small three-bedroom home
0:06:26 > 0:06:28is just becoming increasingly more cramped
0:06:28 > 0:06:30for a growing family of five.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35All these jobs that I should be capable of, I'm not, and you know,
0:06:35 > 0:06:36it's got to the point
0:06:36 > 0:06:40where I don't even really touch a screwdriver, hammer, saw -
0:06:40 > 0:06:43anything of that kind, because I just can't do anything with them.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47It is depressing, to say the least.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52As Jason's motor neurone disease gets worse,
0:06:52 > 0:06:55he'll find moving around the house virtually impossible.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58It's just such a struggle for Jason.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01His balance is really badly affected.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04At the moment, there are so many things for Jason to
0:07:04 > 0:07:08trip and fall over. I mean, the outside space, there's lots of lips
0:07:08 > 0:07:10and things that he could fall over.
0:07:10 > 0:07:14Getting up the stairs and getting down is becoming quite hard
0:07:14 > 0:07:19and, you know, a downstairs toilet and a bedroom would be obviously
0:07:19 > 0:07:21an absolute massive help.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24And when the time comes that
0:07:24 > 0:07:27I need a wheelchair, then, you know,
0:07:27 > 0:07:29they're going to be invaluable.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33'Jason is trying to come to terms with the limited time he has left.'
0:07:33 > 0:07:35No, you're going out if you've finished.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38'He's determined to look after the kids for as long as possible.'
0:07:38 > 0:07:41You know, people say,
0:07:41 > 0:07:43"Oh, yeah, you get out of nappy changing and that."
0:07:43 > 0:07:44I'm not bothered.
0:07:44 > 0:07:46It's a struggle though, ain't it?
0:07:46 > 0:07:48It's a struggle for you to look after them.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55It is, but it's worth it, you know?
0:07:56 > 0:07:58D'you want to take your breakfast now then?
0:07:58 > 0:08:01At the end of the day, we don't know how long Jason's
0:08:01 > 0:08:03got left, so we need to be spending
0:08:03 > 0:08:06that precious time together, really,
0:08:06 > 0:08:09rather than worrying about the house.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14I know people will want to help this family
0:08:14 > 0:08:17and build a home that is ready for the tough times ahead.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22Kind of what we're trying to think of is...
0:08:22 > 0:08:24is trying to future-proof this,
0:08:24 > 0:08:27because you've got a lot on your hands over the coming years.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30So what is it that you need us to do?
0:08:30 > 0:08:33What can we do to future-proof this house for you?
0:08:33 > 0:08:36Well, I mean, anything would be great, obviously.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38Erm, just the house being warm,
0:08:38 > 0:08:41having hot running water would be fantastic,
0:08:41 > 0:08:44having a downstairs toilet and a downstairs shower
0:08:44 > 0:08:47for Jason would be great cos, you know, he finds it really difficult
0:08:47 > 0:08:50getting up the stairs now and it's also quite hazardous for him.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52And, erm, you know,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56the house being safe and accessible for Jason and the girls.
0:08:56 > 0:08:57Doesn't seem fair, does it?
0:08:57 > 0:09:00All one after another, all of these things piling on your family.
0:09:00 > 0:09:05- You sometimes think, "Why me?" "Why us?", you know.- I'm sure.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07I sometimes wonder if I've done something
0:09:07 > 0:09:10seriously wrong in a previous life to deserve all this.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12I can understand that kind of thinking.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15I think you're going to find that actually that you haven't
0:09:15 > 0:09:17done anything wrong in a previous life,
0:09:17 > 0:09:19and in actual fact, while there has been an avalanche of bad,
0:09:19 > 0:09:22you're about to get an avalanche of good from your local community.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25Let's see if we can get them to charge in behind you
0:09:25 > 0:09:28and lift some of the weight off your shoulders, yeah?
0:09:28 > 0:09:30Yeah, we're not going to do this on our own,
0:09:30 > 0:09:34and thankfully the local trades have done us and themselves proud.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36A lot of people turned up already.
0:09:36 > 0:09:38- HE LAUGHS - Come and say hello.
0:09:38 > 0:09:39'Over 100 are ready to go,
0:09:39 > 0:09:42'and it's one of the biggest turn-outs on a first day.
0:09:42 > 0:09:43'This just tells you how much
0:09:43 > 0:09:47'the family story has touched everyone's hearts.'
0:09:48 > 0:09:50So we're going to try and do our best to make this
0:09:50 > 0:09:54better for you guys. No coming back and peeking.
0:09:54 > 0:09:55Thanks so much, guys.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58'Right, let's get on with it.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01'Because this is a massive build.'
0:10:01 > 0:10:03The whole kitchen can come out, then.
0:10:03 > 0:10:05We'll start ripping the kitchen out.
0:10:05 > 0:10:07To elucidate, we are extending all down the side
0:10:07 > 0:10:11and around the back. Not only that, we have a rather large garden
0:10:11 > 0:10:13to landscape, and upstairs to redecorate -
0:10:13 > 0:10:15all in just nine days.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18I think it might be an idea to empty the cupboards
0:10:18 > 0:10:20before we smash them down.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22We're definitely in the right house, aren't we?
0:10:22 > 0:10:24You all right taking that strip of ceiling down?
0:10:24 > 0:10:26Yes, he is.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28While Jules is in charge of demolition inside,
0:10:28 > 0:10:30we have a bunch of lads already starting
0:10:30 > 0:10:33on the timber framework for the new part of the house.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36Oh, it's nice that the extension turns up on the back of a truck.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38That looks like my bit.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40But we need a plan of action
0:10:40 > 0:10:44to fill this framework, and so we'll require a designer.
0:10:44 > 0:10:45Luckily, I've ordered one.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51- Oh, no, not that one - that's Oliver Heath.- Right.
0:10:51 > 0:10:52Now, as you may remember,
0:10:52 > 0:10:54we haven't always seen eye-to-eye in the past
0:10:54 > 0:10:55but I will give it to him -
0:10:55 > 0:10:57he always keeps coming back for more.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59He must be very thick-skinned, like a rhinoceros.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Every time that we abuse you on one of these,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04we have assumed that you've had enough, but you've come back again.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07No, I come back stronger. That's how I come back, cos I know...
0:11:07 > 0:11:10I know what I'm going to get thrown at me.
0:11:10 > 0:11:12I come back and it's amazing.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14Rotten fruit is what he'll get thrown at him.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18Oliver's designs mean we're going to extend down the side
0:11:18 > 0:11:20and right around the back.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22This will create a utility room at the front of the house,
0:11:22 > 0:11:25an open-plan kitchen/diner at the back,
0:11:25 > 0:11:28and a downstairs bedroom for Jason and Liz.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31The old existing kitchen will be split into a new wet room
0:11:31 > 0:11:32and a playroom and study area.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34This is great for Jason, as he will have
0:11:34 > 0:11:39a safe contained space where he can spend quality time with the kids.
0:11:39 > 0:11:40We're sprucing up the living room,
0:11:40 > 0:11:42widening all the internal doors
0:11:42 > 0:11:43for future wheelchair access,
0:11:43 > 0:11:46and a new side entrance will make the whole
0:11:46 > 0:11:49of the downstairs all one flat level.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51Upstairs, it's all about the girls.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53The layout is staying the same
0:11:53 > 0:11:58but each room will get a brand-new look, including the family bathroom.
0:11:58 > 0:12:01Liz's older daughter Emily will move into the master bedroom,
0:12:01 > 0:12:04which means Lily and Poppy will now,
0:12:04 > 0:12:06for the first time, have their own rooms.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09We have equally big plans for the garden.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11The main feature will be a wheelchair-accessible decked pathway
0:12:11 > 0:12:14so Jason and the girls can enjoy the whole area together.
0:12:14 > 0:12:18It should make for a safe, practical house so Jason can stop
0:12:18 > 0:12:22worrying and concentrate on spending the time he has left with the girls.
0:12:22 > 0:12:23Cue Oliver!
0:12:23 > 0:12:25It's a really difficult one.
0:12:25 > 0:12:29It's a really dynamic project, you know. Jason is in a state of change,
0:12:29 > 0:12:32so we are trying to design the house for his current needs,
0:12:32 > 0:12:34and then what's going to happen
0:12:34 > 0:12:36in the near future, and then also...
0:12:36 > 0:12:38They may have to exist in it
0:12:38 > 0:12:41as a normal family without that, and then...
0:12:41 > 0:12:43Yeah, so it's in a real state of flux.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46So we are introducing all sorts of things to kind of future-proof it,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49both in the short, medium and long-term.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52I'm just a little cog within the whole mechanisation of
0:12:52 > 0:12:54this change, and I kind of reckon
0:12:54 > 0:12:58I'm a small, important part of this build.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01- Yes.- As much as the electricians, the plumbers, er...
0:13:01 > 0:13:03And the truth is that if you weren't here,
0:13:03 > 0:13:06- we'd have had to have got someone else.- Yeah.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10'That's not entirely true - we couldn't afford anyone else.'
0:13:10 > 0:13:12We've had a little accident.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15It looked like it was dropped a little bit,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18so I just poked it
0:13:18 > 0:13:22with a bit of tree wood and it all fell down. Just like that.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25See, the boy doesn't know his own strength -
0:13:25 > 0:13:28just pokes things and they fall apart. I'll let you tell Chris.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32Plainly, it wasn't up to our standard, anyway,
0:13:32 > 0:13:34so it had to be taken down.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36Do you see what you've just done there?
0:13:36 > 0:13:38You've just put a positive twist on a negative situation.
0:13:38 > 0:13:40Exactly.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44'And let me tell you, there's no shortage of positivity here.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46'These guys are here to fit some hi-tech kit
0:13:46 > 0:13:48'which is going to help Jason stay independent
0:13:48 > 0:13:50'for as long as possible.'
0:13:50 > 0:13:51What are we doing?
0:13:51 > 0:13:53This is Lee and Andy. They're coming to do something...
0:13:53 > 0:13:56- Gentlemen, how are you? - ..very special for the doors.
0:13:56 > 0:13:57You've got two cameras inside there
0:13:57 > 0:14:00that emits infra-red onto your pupils,
0:14:00 > 0:14:02and then the algorithms inside the computer
0:14:02 > 0:14:04- know where you're looking. - Is that right?
0:14:04 > 0:14:07So he can basically chose through the computer to make doors open.
0:14:07 > 0:14:09- That's genius, isn't it? - Flipping heck.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11So, basically, their home is eye-controlled,
0:14:11 > 0:14:13so it's an eye-controlled living space.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16The level of independence for somebody
0:14:16 > 0:14:19who's lost their movement... that's awesome.
0:14:19 > 0:14:20Immense.
0:14:20 > 0:14:22Do you have any personal experience of, er...?
0:14:22 > 0:14:26Yeah, I do - my wife, she has Fabry's disease, erm...
0:14:26 > 0:14:30Her dad sadly passed away seven years ago of it at 48,
0:14:30 > 0:14:33so I can see and I can empathise with what Jason's going through.
0:14:33 > 0:14:36Hang on a second - it's electrically driven, all of this...
0:14:36 > 0:14:37- Yes.- That means...
0:14:37 > 0:14:40Which puts it in Billy's territory, which is...
0:14:40 > 0:14:42- We've had that discussion.- Amazing bit of kit, don't you think, Bill?
0:14:42 > 0:14:46Also, we haven't finished... The lighting will be as such...
0:14:46 > 0:14:50When Jason looks at the lighting, that will come on as well.
0:14:50 > 0:14:52Which means The Prince of Darkness and his team
0:14:52 > 0:14:55have got to put in twice the amount of cabling.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58I will check. I'll go and see what they're going to do.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01Build it off there and then we'll make our plans to go up there.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03And we have our work cut out in the back,
0:15:03 > 0:15:07as we're installing a completely new central-heating system.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09Yeah, I mean Liz and Jason haven't had hot water,
0:15:09 > 0:15:11you know, an absolute basic, for ages.
0:15:11 > 0:15:14This tank, new boiler, we're going to put
0:15:14 > 0:15:16a solar water-heating system on the roof,
0:15:16 > 0:15:19it's all going to come together to create a really lovely, warm,
0:15:19 > 0:15:22cosy and energy-efficient house, which is going to be
0:15:22 > 0:15:25a massive change for them, and this is all part of the plan.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28'But we have to hide that big, ugly thing somewhere.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30'Not the designer, the oil tank.'
0:15:30 > 0:15:32Conceal this thing, which is no easy task.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36Yes, but to be fair, when you say WE have to do that,
0:15:36 > 0:15:39the garden designer has to now incorporate this great lump
0:15:39 > 0:15:41into his beautiful garden design.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44So if we make this project look even half brilliant,
0:15:44 > 0:15:47- then that's actually amazing.- Half?!
0:15:47 > 0:15:52No, it's going to be beautiful, cos we don't do 90%. We don't do 95%.
0:15:52 > 0:15:53We do 100%, Oliver.
0:15:53 > 0:15:57'Talking of percentages, the boys at the front have found precisely
0:15:57 > 0:16:00'0% of the water mains which we need to connect the new drainage to.'
0:16:00 > 0:16:02Here's an opportunity for you.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- Can I hop you out of the hole for a second?- Yeah.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06Mark, see if you can fit in the hole better.
0:16:06 > 0:16:09'Thank goodness we have the perfect bijou and compact builder
0:16:09 > 0:16:12- 'to get into the smallest holes.' - Aaargh!
0:16:12 > 0:16:14OK, so if we, like, pass him the shovel...
0:16:14 > 0:16:16Actually, that's way too big, isn't it, really?
0:16:16 > 0:16:18Here, don't worry,
0:16:18 > 0:16:20I was out the other day and I managed to find something.
0:16:20 > 0:16:21Oh, hold on a minute!
0:16:21 > 0:16:23You're not actually going to extract...?
0:16:23 > 0:16:25LAUGHTER
0:16:25 > 0:16:29For little, confined spaces. It's a real shovel, we haven't had it made.
0:16:29 > 0:16:34It's a real shovel for confined spaces.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37For people four foot and below.
0:16:37 > 0:16:39It works, look.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41I was there in a builder's merchants the other day,
0:16:41 > 0:16:43picking up some stuff, and I suddenly saw that
0:16:43 > 0:16:45and I thought, "I know, that's the very tool...
0:16:45 > 0:16:49- "that could use that shovel!" - LAUGHTER
0:16:49 > 0:16:50I only got it as a joke,
0:16:50 > 0:16:53but it seems to be doing the job really well.
0:16:53 > 0:16:55'All right, so we do give him some stick,
0:16:55 > 0:16:56'but whilst a bunch of guys stand around
0:16:56 > 0:16:59'watching half a man dig half a hole,
0:16:59 > 0:17:01'things are moving at a supersonic speed around us.'
0:17:01 > 0:17:03As you can see, a gentleman there
0:17:03 > 0:17:05who's taking a window out. How are you, all right?
0:17:05 > 0:17:08Jolly good, very happy up there. So he's taken the window out
0:17:08 > 0:17:10because they've already got a new window in,
0:17:10 > 0:17:13and if you look directly above it, that's new fascias and guttering
0:17:13 > 0:17:15going all the way round the building already,
0:17:15 > 0:17:16all within the first hour and a half,
0:17:16 > 0:17:18which is just amazing when you think about it,
0:17:18 > 0:17:22but then it is mayhem because there are 80-90 people wandering around.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25It's going to take hours of hard slog,
0:17:25 > 0:17:28and they've given up paid work to be here. Amazing!
0:17:30 > 0:17:33You keep thinking, like, you know, somebody else needs this,
0:17:33 > 0:17:35that's what I'm thinking in my head, you know...
0:17:35 > 0:17:38- The family.- The family, the family, yeah, yeah,
0:17:38 > 0:17:42- just keep carrying on. Just keep going.- That's the way forward.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45Right, I'll go there, you go over here.
0:17:45 > 0:17:49Truly, their family story has touched everyone on site,
0:17:49 > 0:17:52but the person who most wants this to be right is Jason.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57As a family, you've been steam-rollered, really,
0:17:57 > 0:17:59by an avalanche of bad news.
0:17:59 > 0:18:04Yeah, erm, didn't really see any of it coming, to be honest with you.
0:18:04 > 0:18:06I sort of met Liz about five years ago
0:18:06 > 0:18:09and we kind of just got fired into having kids,
0:18:09 > 0:18:12you know, which is the best thing that's ever happened to me.
0:18:12 > 0:18:17And then, like you say, we've had some pretty bad news since,
0:18:17 > 0:18:21but they're my inspiration to fight it and...
0:18:22 > 0:18:27..that's what I intend to do, and I am doing.
0:18:27 > 0:18:33You know, getting up in the morning and giving them...
0:18:35 > 0:18:37..giving them breakfast and...
0:18:37 > 0:18:39and that seems...
0:18:41 > 0:18:48..such a simple thing to do, but yet, for me, that's so important.
0:18:48 > 0:18:52- You're facing a lot of difficulties and an uncertain future.- Yeah.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55What plays on your mind the most?
0:18:55 > 0:19:01I was, erm... I was 12 when... when I lost my father
0:19:01 > 0:19:05and my sister was, erm, six.
0:19:05 > 0:19:11Her recollection of my father was not...not that great.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14I don't want that for my kids.
0:19:15 > 0:19:17I want them to know their dad.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23Notwithstanding what you're dealing with as a family at the moment,
0:19:23 > 0:19:25what are your hopes for your girls' future?
0:19:25 > 0:19:29I want them to do what they feel
0:19:29 > 0:19:33is what they want to do in life.
0:19:33 > 0:19:38Whatever they may choose, I'll be happy and proud.
0:19:39 > 0:19:43It's not about what you do, it's who you are.
0:19:47 > 0:19:49- To just be themselves?- Yeah.
0:19:50 > 0:19:54Tell me about Liz. She's quite something, though, isn't she?
0:19:54 > 0:19:55Unbelievably strong.
0:19:55 > 0:20:00She's very strong. She feels that she needs to be strong for me.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03You know, obviously, the inevitable is going to happen,
0:20:03 > 0:20:06but all I ever wanted was, you know, Liz and the kids,
0:20:06 > 0:20:08and I've got that, so...
0:20:10 > 0:20:14It's about, you know, striving to keep that as long as possible.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18With all you have to worry about and what's coming your way,
0:20:18 > 0:20:22if the house is done, does that give you some reassurance?
0:20:22 > 0:20:26The fact that we'll be able to spend a lot more time together,
0:20:26 > 0:20:30you know, and the fact that we can make memories there,
0:20:30 > 0:20:32we can play games with the kids,
0:20:32 > 0:20:34obviously cos there's less stress,
0:20:34 > 0:20:40so hopefully my deterioration will be less.
0:20:42 > 0:20:43It means a lot.
0:20:45 > 0:20:46We can't stop the inevitable,
0:20:46 > 0:20:51but we can make Jason's time left with his family so much richer.
0:20:51 > 0:20:53Back on site, the shell of the extension is up
0:20:53 > 0:20:57and they are knocking through to create that open-plan kitchen/diner.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00Steels have gone in to reinforce the upstairs
0:21:00 > 0:21:01as the fireplace has come out,
0:21:01 > 0:21:04and the roof trusses are going in at this early stage too,
0:21:04 > 0:21:06and there's quite a lot of them.
0:21:06 > 0:21:07In the bedroom, cos of the hoist
0:21:07 > 0:21:09to get him in and out of the bed and his chair,
0:21:09 > 0:21:12we're making the ceiling stronger so it can actually take the weight
0:21:12 > 0:21:15of someone being pulled up and carried on those joists.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18We think about everything in advance.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20It'll look tidy, this, though, won't it?
0:21:20 > 0:21:23These two are the best two roofing joiners in East Yorkshire.
0:21:23 > 0:21:25We'll have this done in an hour.
0:21:27 > 0:21:29We're in roofing royalty.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33Meanwhile, downstairs, we have a very tetchy plastering guru,
0:21:33 > 0:21:35as someone has managed to put a hole in the only ceiling
0:21:35 > 0:21:37he didn't have to touch.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39- That's, er... - It's annoying, isn't it?
0:21:39 > 0:21:41Yeah, no, we don't need a hole there.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43I'll talk you through patching the ceiling, shall I?
0:21:43 > 0:21:45- Teach me.- You can do it. - I'd like that.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47Tomorrow morning. It's a date.
0:21:48 > 0:21:49You haven't got your name on your hat.
0:21:49 > 0:21:51It's like a rite of passage, this, isn't it? Thank you.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53There you go.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57Would you say he's an attractive-looking man?
0:21:57 > 0:22:00Would you say he's a handsome-looking man?
0:22:00 > 0:22:03He's not...obscene, is he?
0:22:03 > 0:22:05Praise indeed, he's not obscene!
0:22:05 > 0:22:07I take that as a compliment.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09Well, I don't... I don't find looking at men...
0:22:09 > 0:22:12It doesn't do it for me, I wouldn't know.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14Who do you find offensive to look at?
0:22:14 > 0:22:16Er...
0:22:16 > 0:22:17Billy.
0:22:17 > 0:22:19'No, no, no, you can't be mean to Billy.
0:22:19 > 0:22:21'He's been working hard with all the hi-tech kit
0:22:21 > 0:22:23'that he doesn't quite understand.'
0:22:23 > 0:22:27- What is that over there? - That's the central unit.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29Is it the ten-cable system or the eight-cable system?
0:22:29 > 0:22:31The eight-cable system.
0:22:31 > 0:22:33Oh, thanks, as long as I've got that right!
0:22:35 > 0:22:40Jason, the guy we're doing the house for, is an electrician,
0:22:40 > 0:22:43and we've been taking some of his work out.
0:22:43 > 0:22:44His work's been good, hasn't it?
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Yeah, it's quite a good installation, to be honest, yeah.
0:22:47 > 0:22:51It's a shame he didn't get quite to finish it, actually. He's done well.
0:22:51 > 0:22:52It's a shame we had to take it out,
0:22:52 > 0:22:56but we all know now, in our own minds, when we come to test it,
0:22:56 > 0:22:59we know everything we've put in is brand-new.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02It might not work, but it will be brand-new.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04To be fair, they do have a lot of extra work.
0:23:04 > 0:23:07So, where are we at at the end of day one?
0:23:07 > 0:23:10Well, this room has been stripped out, brand-new windows,
0:23:10 > 0:23:12electrics have all been done, they're still working on it there,
0:23:12 > 0:23:14and a new lintel over this door.
0:23:14 > 0:23:16Here, as we move into the playroom/study,
0:23:16 > 0:23:19most of the ceiling's gone, electrics, plumbing put in.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21Most of the floor's gone up there as well, funnily enough.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24Perhaps the biggest change is through in this room.
0:23:24 > 0:23:25We have a new stud wall
0:23:25 > 0:23:27and, behind it, we have what will be the wet room.
0:23:27 > 0:23:29We've taken the chimney out and put new steels in
0:23:29 > 0:23:32to support the roof because we need the space.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35Then I'm moving through into the new bedroom,
0:23:35 > 0:23:39er, but of course you're in the new kitchen/diner,
0:23:39 > 0:23:41which comes all the way round here
0:23:41 > 0:23:43and leads down into the utility room.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46Also, a brand-new roof on, which is something spectacular,
0:23:46 > 0:23:48and if you look out here,
0:23:48 > 0:23:50the boys are still working away on the garden.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52Now, that's a pretty good first day.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02It's day two and we have another amazing turn-out
0:24:02 > 0:24:04of over 90 of the local trades,
0:24:04 > 0:24:07but a big job for today is digging out the floor
0:24:07 > 0:24:09for Jason's all-important downstairs bathroom,
0:24:09 > 0:24:12and another step in getting all the floors level.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15It's all there, it just needs finessing and connecting,
0:24:15 > 0:24:19and at the moment they're finessing it with a big road breaker.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22ROAD BREAKER CLATTERS
0:24:22 > 0:24:24Out the back, Oliver is sharing his massive vision
0:24:24 > 0:24:27with the landscape gardener. Very kind of him(!)
0:24:27 > 0:24:30What I want him to be able to see is to look out from his room
0:24:30 > 0:24:32- onto the garden.- Yeah.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36You will still be able to see all of the garden from that window there.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38I guess it's quite nice if you can also see it,
0:24:38 > 0:24:40so if it is raised, cos the garden is quite...
0:24:40 > 0:24:42You WILL still be able to see it.
0:24:42 > 0:24:43So you can get a visual sightline
0:24:43 > 0:24:47- from here to the destination point of that little island.- Yeah.
0:24:47 > 0:24:50And for there to be like a... like real, live kind of
0:24:50 > 0:24:54dynamic forms of nature here, so things like leaves, plants...
0:24:54 > 0:24:56- He's an interesting character, isn't he, Oliver?- Yeah.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59I couldn't help overhearing the conversation, and essentially
0:24:59 > 0:25:01when he was saying all the things he wanted,
0:25:01 > 0:25:05- they're things you're already doing, aren't they?- Yeah!- Yeah.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08That's designers for you, though, isn't it?
0:25:08 > 0:25:10'Oh, no! He thinks he can plaster now!'
0:25:10 > 0:25:13It doesn't seem too bad, actually, Chris.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15- Good luck.- Thank you.
0:25:15 > 0:25:18What's going on in here, Olivia? What's going on?
0:25:18 > 0:25:20I'm just fixing the ceiling, Mark.
0:25:20 > 0:25:22'Is he allowed sharp stuff?'
0:25:22 > 0:25:25I like this stage in the job because this is now a nascent home.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29- What's a nascent?- Nascent means...
0:25:29 > 0:25:30developing with potential,
0:25:30 > 0:25:33an opportunity to be, not yet a home,
0:25:33 > 0:25:35but it has potential for a home,
0:25:35 > 0:25:38in the same way as Oliver is a nascent human being.
0:25:38 > 0:25:39Oh, I see.
0:25:39 > 0:25:41Not quite there yet.
0:25:41 > 0:25:42Yes.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44THEY LAUGH
0:25:46 > 0:25:47Hands-on Heath.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50'He takes a lot of stick, but he keeps going, doesn't he?'
0:25:50 > 0:25:54Making the house and garden all on one level is a real challenge.
0:25:54 > 0:25:57We have to dig a foot out of the old concrete
0:25:57 > 0:26:01to get the outside decking exactly flush with the inside.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05But above, the roofers are well ahead -
0:26:05 > 0:26:08the extension is nearly water-tight and it's only the second day.
0:26:10 > 0:26:14These tiles that you've supplied us are, like, the dog's...aren't they?
0:26:14 > 0:26:17- They are, dog's proverbial.- Yeah.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Cos you could have got away with just chucking a cheap tile at us,
0:26:20 > 0:26:21but this actually...
0:26:21 > 0:26:24It was the nearest we had to what you were looking for, so...
0:26:24 > 0:26:26Cos you did the bricks for us as well?
0:26:26 > 0:26:27We've done the bricks for you as well.
0:26:27 > 0:26:31You all right with a man hug? Not everybody...
0:26:31 > 0:26:33Who doesn't like a man hug?!
0:26:33 > 0:26:36There's always a lot of love around on our sites.
0:26:36 > 0:26:38You know what, it's love and support the family will need
0:26:38 > 0:26:41if they're going to get through the tough times ahead,
0:26:41 > 0:26:44something they're getting in spades from older daughter, Emily.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48You live at home with the family at the moment, don't you?
0:26:48 > 0:26:49Yeah, yeah, in the box room, as it happens.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52Do you see that being a long-term thing,
0:26:52 > 0:26:55staying at home with the family, or...moving away?
0:26:55 > 0:27:00Well, I think I'll be there to support my mum as long as I can,
0:27:00 > 0:27:03if I have to live in the house and help raise the kids,
0:27:03 > 0:27:06I'm not bothered, and I love my mum to bits
0:27:06 > 0:27:09and I WILL be there to support her, no matter what.
0:27:09 > 0:27:12It's a big commitment, though, for you to, you know,
0:27:12 > 0:27:15to sort of almost set your own life on hold for a while.
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Well, it's a very big commitment, but I'm a family-orientated person
0:27:18 > 0:27:22- and...- And you obviously love your mum.- Yeah, I love my mum to bits.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24My mum has raised me, so there's no reason why,
0:27:24 > 0:27:28if she is struggling with things, I can't be there to support her.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31Do you admire her for being able to be such a rock for everybody?
0:27:31 > 0:27:32I do, I really admire her.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35I don't know how she holds it together some days, I really don't.
0:27:35 > 0:27:39She's really, really steady.
0:27:39 > 0:27:43She's the one person that keeps it all together in the family.
0:27:43 > 0:27:45She's an amazing woman, no doubt, then there's a tough road ahead,
0:27:45 > 0:27:47but you're saying you'll be there
0:27:47 > 0:27:49and walk along that tough road with her?
0:27:49 > 0:27:52Oh, yeah, I fully intend to, I'll be there the whole way,
0:27:52 > 0:27:53with her and with Jason,
0:27:53 > 0:27:57cos Jason means a lot to me as well, he's done so much for me.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59It's hard, isn't it, to deal with so much?
0:27:59 > 0:28:01It must be very difficult for you, as a daughter,
0:28:01 > 0:28:03to see your mum actually having to deal with so much all the time.
0:28:03 > 0:28:07Yeah, it is difficult, but at the end of the day, we have to get...
0:28:07 > 0:28:10make the best of what life Jason's got
0:28:10 > 0:28:13and, like, making memories for Jason,
0:28:13 > 0:28:15something that he's got to...
0:28:15 > 0:28:17When he's feeling down, he's got something to look at,
0:28:17 > 0:28:19make him smile a bit.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21And, of course, memories for the girls too?
0:28:21 > 0:28:23Yeah, memories for the girls,
0:28:23 > 0:28:25to remember their dad and everything like that.
0:28:25 > 0:28:28'What a very impressive young woman Emily is.
0:28:28 > 0:28:30'A real support for her family,
0:28:30 > 0:28:32'she really deserves a comfortable, cosy space of her own,
0:28:32 > 0:28:36'and insulating her room will go that extra step to achieving that.
0:28:36 > 0:28:37'But that means you and I
0:28:37 > 0:28:41'have to endure Oliver droning on about energy ratings.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44'I'm afraid we can't avoid it, here it comes.'
0:28:45 > 0:28:46Yes!
0:28:46 > 0:28:49Cavity wall insulation. I know, your favourite subject.
0:28:49 > 0:28:51From the survey that we did with the assessment,
0:28:51 > 0:28:55it tells us the family could save £213 a year
0:28:55 > 0:28:58by having cavity wall insulation fitted.
0:28:58 > 0:29:01So basically, these guys can pump this white stuff,
0:29:01 > 0:29:04this white fluff, into the walls, it takes them about two hours
0:29:04 > 0:29:07and the house is warmer and it's a really quick, easy job,
0:29:07 > 0:29:09it's something that loads of people could do.
0:29:09 > 0:29:12We're doing it from the inside but you can do it from the outside,
0:29:12 > 0:29:14so you don't have to make a mess of your inside,
0:29:14 > 0:29:16it's important you know that.
0:29:16 > 0:29:19'Yeah, check me out with my energy-saving tips!'
0:29:21 > 0:29:23And we're going to be putting solar panels on the roof.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30What you're going to get is the panels sitting on the roof,
0:29:30 > 0:29:32they'll heat up, giving them free hot water.
0:29:34 > 0:29:38Free? Brilliant, isn't it? It's brilliant. We love that word - free.
0:29:38 > 0:29:39The sun's here now.
0:29:39 > 0:29:42Excellent! We've also got a wood burner going in to help
0:29:42 > 0:29:44warm the house, but that means some poor guy has to
0:29:44 > 0:29:46climb up the chimney to fix the flue.
0:29:46 > 0:29:48I couldn't do a chimney like that now, cos...
0:29:48 > 0:29:50I used to be all right with heights, but it's gone.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52- I can't do heights now.- Can you not?
0:29:52 > 0:29:54Yeah, I'm the same. I used to be all right, but not any more.
0:29:54 > 0:29:57I'm all right with heights, but widths frighten the life out of me.
0:29:57 > 0:29:58What about you, Byrnsey?
0:29:58 > 0:30:01Heights? Oh, you remember I was in the circus -
0:30:01 > 0:30:02done all the trapeze and everything?
0:30:02 > 0:30:08After that, they commissioned me - Elvis Presley done a film, Acapulco.
0:30:08 > 0:30:12I was actually Elvis Presley's body double, and I done the dive.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15That is why I can take heights, I can do anything.
0:30:15 > 0:30:17You didn't even have the fear of heights.
0:30:17 > 0:30:19That's quite spooky, that you're good with heights,
0:30:19 > 0:30:21cos you know Emily, the eldest daughter here?
0:30:21 > 0:30:23- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. - She likes heights...- Oh, nice.
0:30:23 > 0:30:26..and we're going to take her bungee jumping.
0:30:26 > 0:30:27Yeah! Bring it on.
0:30:27 > 0:30:30Every week, he never fails to let us down, does he?
0:30:30 > 0:30:32Well, it's no different with what I've been doing
0:30:32 > 0:30:34in the trapeze world -
0:30:34 > 0:30:35all it is is jumping out of a bucket
0:30:35 > 0:30:37with a bit of string tied to your leg.
0:30:37 > 0:30:38How can that be harmful?
0:30:38 > 0:30:40Yeah, it's not the falling, Billy,
0:30:40 > 0:30:42it's the hitting the ground hard that's the problem.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46Out in the garden, as day turns to night,
0:30:46 > 0:30:48it's the groundworks that are becoming the real problem for us,
0:30:48 > 0:30:50as we try to make the outside
0:30:50 > 0:30:51level with the inside for easy access.
0:30:51 > 0:30:53It's still going on!
0:30:53 > 0:30:57All the digging out of the concrete and everything,
0:30:57 > 0:31:00this must be about the hardest deck you've had to put down, innit?
0:31:00 > 0:31:03It's the most over-engineered deck I've ever come across, yeah.
0:31:03 > 0:31:05And the reason you've had to drop it in
0:31:05 > 0:31:07is cos of the difference between the height out here...
0:31:07 > 0:31:11The height out here and the existing height slab in the house.
0:31:11 > 0:31:15So, in case of a wheelchair in the future, straight in and out.
0:31:17 > 0:31:20Yeah, getting the floor level inside is just as important,
0:31:20 > 0:31:22and by the time we're finished with it,
0:31:22 > 0:31:23it should be flat as a snooker table.
0:31:23 > 0:31:25Complicated stuff, this -
0:31:25 > 0:31:27people are having to work really hard in this house,
0:31:27 > 0:31:29they're having to go the extra mile every time
0:31:29 > 0:31:31just to make these things work - it's incredible.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33But that means the poor flooring lads
0:31:33 > 0:31:36have to screed and level the floor into the night.
0:31:36 > 0:31:38Can I just say, "Thank you, lads"? Top job.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43Morning! Just four days left.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46The boys burned the midnight oil and finished the floor inside,
0:31:46 > 0:31:48and the lads today are still struggling
0:31:48 > 0:31:52with the concrete level outside - but it's not through lack of trying.
0:31:52 > 0:31:54If we're not careful, it could add time
0:31:54 > 0:31:56to what is already an ambitious garden -
0:31:56 > 0:31:58but it is worth it, as it can be another area
0:31:58 > 0:32:00for the family to have fun together.
0:32:00 > 0:32:03Now, my idea of fun with the family is singing to them.
0:32:03 > 0:32:05Really, really loving being a dad again,
0:32:05 > 0:32:08spending lovely time with my oldest sons at the moment,
0:32:08 > 0:32:11and spending a lot of time with young Eddie, as well,
0:32:11 > 0:32:13who is very lovely.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16You've written your own song for him, haven't you?
0:32:16 > 0:32:17I have.
0:32:17 > 0:32:18Give us a little rendition.
0:32:18 > 0:32:21Well, I call him Wazoo, so now I've written a song.
0:32:21 > 0:32:24# Here's little Wazoo
0:32:24 > 0:32:27# It's just me and you... #
0:32:28 > 0:32:29Hey, where are you going?!
0:32:29 > 0:32:30Everyone's a critic.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33Probably a good time for the lads to get out of earshot, to be honest.
0:32:33 > 0:32:35Actually, it's Emily's 21st birthday -
0:32:35 > 0:32:37it's the perfect opportunity for a day out
0:32:37 > 0:32:40and for the family to create more of those precious memories.
0:32:40 > 0:32:42It's also a good excuse for Billy to show off to Emily
0:32:42 > 0:32:46how to bungee jump - after all, he used to be a pro at this, didn't he?
0:32:47 > 0:32:50It's getting higher and higher, ain't it?
0:32:52 > 0:32:55I've just got a twinge in me back, though.
0:32:55 > 0:32:57It'll be good for it, it'll stretch ya. Go on, sunshine.
0:32:57 > 0:32:59- Good luck.- Good luck - enjoy.
0:32:59 > 0:33:01Is it me, or is Billy trying to chicken out?
0:33:01 > 0:33:04Do you think he's going to do it, Jason?
0:33:04 > 0:33:06- He lives dangerously, doesn't he? - Very dangerously.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08He might just do it.
0:33:08 > 0:33:10I think you should go first, Emily,
0:33:10 > 0:33:13cos...ladies first, before gents, you know what I mean?
0:33:13 > 0:33:15I'll be right behind you. Good luck, bubble-gum.
0:33:17 > 0:33:21There is no stopping Emily, keen to make a memory of a lifetime.
0:33:21 > 0:33:23I do it for my family,
0:33:23 > 0:33:26to show them that you live every day as it is,
0:33:26 > 0:33:28and don't dwell on what's coming in the future.
0:33:28 > 0:33:31Three, two, one...bungee.
0:33:31 > 0:33:34ALL CHEER
0:33:35 > 0:33:37Whoo! Whoo!
0:33:37 > 0:33:39- There she goes, Jason, she's done it.- Yeah.
0:33:44 > 0:33:45OK, your turn, Billy -
0:33:45 > 0:33:47don't make a fool of yourself, now.
0:33:47 > 0:33:49Come on, Bill.
0:33:49 > 0:33:52I've swum with sharks, horse ride...
0:33:52 > 0:33:55I've done everything - but, oh, my back's so bad.
0:33:55 > 0:33:57Why is he taking so long?
0:33:57 > 0:34:00I've done my back coming up the stairs,
0:34:00 > 0:34:03Chris?! I need you, son - I need a mate.
0:34:03 > 0:34:05Right, I'll just pop up and have a word.
0:34:05 > 0:34:07Just go up and egg him on.
0:34:07 > 0:34:08What's the matter, son?
0:34:08 > 0:34:09Come on, you can do that, look!
0:34:09 > 0:34:12Yeah, but if a girl can do it, you can do it, Chris.
0:34:12 > 0:34:14Hang on, what's happening?!
0:34:14 > 0:34:17You're doing it - I just come up to give you some support.
0:34:17 > 0:34:18I thought you were the expert -
0:34:18 > 0:34:21diving out, double for Elvis Presley in Acapulco.
0:34:21 > 0:34:22It was 1968, son.
0:34:22 > 0:34:25Are you twisting this round to me?
0:34:25 > 0:34:27Listen, what you've got to do - don't look down,
0:34:27 > 0:34:30feet together, just jump out. No problem.
0:34:30 > 0:34:33Now he's giving advice! That's hilarious.
0:34:33 > 0:34:34This is mental.
0:34:34 > 0:34:36Honestly, I don't know if I can do it.
0:34:37 > 0:34:39I can't believe you bottled it.
0:34:39 > 0:34:40I was going to do it, still,
0:34:40 > 0:34:43but, mate, he said no - not with a bad back.
0:34:43 > 0:34:46Three, two, one...bungee.
0:34:46 > 0:34:48- Ohh...- Come on, you were there, then.- Nearly went, there.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51So, you saw Chris at the top - so where is he now?
0:34:51 > 0:34:53I don't know, he just walked off.
0:34:53 > 0:34:56Emily went straight off, like that, come on, mate.
0:34:56 > 0:34:57What was all that about?
0:34:57 > 0:34:58Exactly - come on, then.
0:34:58 > 0:35:02Big, deep breath, here we go - big deep breath, three, two...
0:35:05 > 0:35:07ALL CHEER
0:35:07 > 0:35:11- Yeah!- Whoo!
0:35:12 > 0:35:14Thanks.
0:35:16 > 0:35:18Thank you - you just got up there and done it.
0:35:18 > 0:35:20And you...you owe me big time.
0:35:24 > 0:35:26Rejuvenated from his adrenaline hit,
0:35:26 > 0:35:30Chris is back to get up to speed with the work his boys have done.
0:35:31 > 0:35:32Love plastering, me.
0:35:35 > 0:35:38Here we are, look - you all right, boys?
0:35:38 > 0:35:41They've done two more hits upstairs, so that's coming on.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43This is being prepped for a big over skim this afternoon.
0:35:43 > 0:35:45I don't know how many plasterers are here -
0:35:45 > 0:35:46it's got to be 16.
0:35:46 > 0:35:49It's good that you have plenty of boys on the job, Chris,
0:35:49 > 0:35:51cos we need the plastering all finished today,
0:35:51 > 0:35:54so we can get on with the next stage of the electrics.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56And with all the extra hi-tech kit going in,
0:35:56 > 0:35:58we can't afford any delays.
0:35:58 > 0:36:00You can see the job changing, can't you?
0:36:00 > 0:36:02Cos everything is going to be covered up -
0:36:02 > 0:36:04ie, the plumbing, the electrics it's all in,
0:36:04 > 0:36:06it's a positive move in the right direction
0:36:06 > 0:36:08when the plasterers arrive.
0:36:08 > 0:36:12And one of those fabulous plasterers who come to do their bit
0:36:12 > 0:36:14is Jason's old school friend Simon.
0:36:14 > 0:36:16Usually, when you...
0:36:16 > 0:36:19When you find out news like this, everyone gets news like this
0:36:19 > 0:36:21with some family member or friend or something,
0:36:21 > 0:36:22but you can do nothing, can't you?
0:36:22 > 0:36:24You can do absolutely nothing -
0:36:24 > 0:36:26all you can say is, "I'm sorry to hear the news."
0:36:26 > 0:36:27But you've given us the chance
0:36:27 > 0:36:31to actually do something that matters, so thank you, fellas.
0:36:31 > 0:36:33- Cheers.- Thank you very much.
0:36:33 > 0:36:36Do you know, we get that kind of commitment everywhere we go?
0:36:36 > 0:36:38And it never fails to amaze me how good people are.
0:36:38 > 0:36:41These kinds of ambitious builds can only be done
0:36:41 > 0:36:42with these kinds of people -
0:36:42 > 0:36:44all of them are going the extra yard,
0:36:44 > 0:36:46including the Trojans in the back yard.
0:36:46 > 0:36:48All their hard work has paid off
0:36:48 > 0:36:50and now they're cracking on with the decking.
0:36:51 > 0:36:54Everything in this garden, now, is wheelchair-friendly -
0:36:54 > 0:36:57your grades, your depths, your levels,
0:36:57 > 0:36:59absolutely everything is wheelchair friendly.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01But also it's much more complex than that -
0:37:01 > 0:37:04so, the idea of the wavy line there is to hide the oil...
0:37:04 > 0:37:06- The tank, yeah. - So, we can see all the pebbles -
0:37:06 > 0:37:08what's going on there, then?
0:37:08 > 0:37:10We're having a beach theme going on here,
0:37:10 > 0:37:12grading off into blues, purples and green gravels,
0:37:12 > 0:37:15coming back up into your pebbles, as well.
0:37:15 > 0:37:16Yeah, they're making progress,
0:37:16 > 0:37:20but still two days behind schedule with loads left to do.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23In the house, the wet room boys are getting on with the tiling,
0:37:23 > 0:37:26and all the plaster is drying out nicely.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29Or have I spoken too soon? You see, that's Mark's worried face,
0:37:29 > 0:37:32and those boys who've just put the ceiling up aren't too happy, either.
0:37:32 > 0:37:35- There might be a problem. - What have you done?
0:37:35 > 0:37:36Basically, what I've done is,
0:37:36 > 0:37:39I haven't put any strengtheners into the ceiling to take the hoist,
0:37:39 > 0:37:42I'd completely forgotten the hoist, and the ceiling's finished,
0:37:42 > 0:37:44and I don't know what to do, I don't know how to get round it.
0:37:44 > 0:37:46The roof trusses need extra support in the ceiling
0:37:46 > 0:37:48to take the hoist, and Jason's weight,
0:37:48 > 0:37:50and Mark has forgotten to do it.
0:37:52 > 0:37:54And the only way round it...
0:37:54 > 0:37:55..is to take the ceiling down.
0:37:55 > 0:37:57..is to...
0:37:57 > 0:37:58..take the ceiling down.
0:37:58 > 0:37:59..take the ceiling down.
0:37:59 > 0:38:01You can't take the ceiling down.
0:38:01 > 0:38:03At this stage of the build, we really don't need that -
0:38:03 > 0:38:06when Chris gets wind of this, he's going to go ape.
0:38:06 > 0:38:07Distract him!
0:38:07 > 0:38:10Oliver, why are you rummaging through bags of clothes?
0:38:10 > 0:38:12What we're doing is we're going to make a blanket -
0:38:12 > 0:38:13it's kind of like a blanket
0:38:13 > 0:38:16that will kind of instil memories in the children.
0:38:16 > 0:38:18So, we're going through some of their old clothes..
0:38:18 > 0:38:20- His clothes, so that.. - His clothes, yeah.- Oh, OK.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23So that in the winter, they can kind of cuddle up with it,
0:38:23 > 0:38:25and they can get a sense of the smell
0:38:25 > 0:38:26and the touch of his clothes.
0:38:26 > 0:38:30As mad as that sounds, I sort of get what he's trying to get across.
0:38:30 > 0:38:32- Yeah. No, it kind of makes sense, on this occasion.- I know, I know...
0:38:32 > 0:38:34Well, I tell you what,
0:38:34 > 0:38:36when my dad died, we made all these cushions
0:38:36 > 0:38:39out of...out of his old shirts, cos he kind of worked in the City,
0:38:39 > 0:38:41- he had all these monogrammed shirts.- Right.
0:38:41 > 0:38:43It was really lovely, you know, you kind of sit down in the evening
0:38:43 > 0:38:46and you suddenly find yourself hugging this cushion.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49You know, it's that tactile sense of warmth that's so nice.
0:38:49 > 0:38:50I like that idea.
0:38:50 > 0:38:51So, what we're doing, really,
0:38:51 > 0:38:53is kind of like an upcycling project.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56- Wait a minute, hold on... - Yeah, the pink could work, actually.
0:38:56 > 0:38:59I mean, what we'll do is, we'll just take a little bit, you know,
0:38:59 > 0:39:01- so it will just be a bit like that...- With the grey in it?
0:39:01 > 0:39:05Yeah, exactly. That will just become a little patch. Er...
0:39:05 > 0:39:07- But, you know, it's about... - Your idea was rubbish.
0:39:07 > 0:39:08- I know, plainly.- Mine was brilliant.
0:39:08 > 0:39:10It's just about pulling patchworks together.
0:39:10 > 0:39:13Do you know what? That's a really lovely idea of Oliver's
0:39:13 > 0:39:15to help keep memories of Jason alive for years to come.
0:39:15 > 0:39:18And two people who know how important it is
0:39:18 > 0:39:19are best friends Heather and Sue.
0:39:19 > 0:39:21Has it been heartbreaking
0:39:21 > 0:39:24watching this happen to the family from the outside?
0:39:24 > 0:39:27I think we've seen, over the years, Jason deteriorating,
0:39:27 > 0:39:30but, until last year, not knowing what it was,
0:39:30 > 0:39:33and, you know - they're such a happy couple.
0:39:33 > 0:39:37I think the main thing, now, is just to try and buy them time isn't it?
0:39:37 > 0:39:39- Yeah.- Yeah. And I think that's what he wants to do,
0:39:39 > 0:39:40is make positive memories,
0:39:40 > 0:39:42and he don't want to be disabled by the house
0:39:42 > 0:39:44or anything else, really.
0:39:44 > 0:39:48- Mm.- So, if that enables him to be a good dad
0:39:48 > 0:39:51and to be what he thinks is important
0:39:51 > 0:39:52for the girls to remember about him,
0:39:52 > 0:39:56- then it will make a really big difference to him.- Mm.
0:39:56 > 0:39:57It will do, yeah.
0:39:57 > 0:39:59Well, hopefully, if we get a move on,
0:39:59 > 0:40:02we should have a warm, cosy house for them to make those memories -
0:40:02 > 0:40:04and, with the oil heating system all plumbed in,
0:40:04 > 0:40:06we are one step closer.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10We've got less than 200ml.
0:40:10 > 0:40:12Back with O'Shortie and the ceiling cock-up,
0:40:12 > 0:40:14someone has come up with a quick fix to a big problem
0:40:14 > 0:40:18which means the whole ceiling doesn't have to be taken down.
0:40:18 > 0:40:20We've cut a little loft to get access to the void,
0:40:20 > 0:40:26then we can go up and climb back in and fit the timber from above.
0:40:26 > 0:40:27- You're a genius.- I know.
0:40:27 > 0:40:29Jules may have fixed the hoist support problem,
0:40:29 > 0:40:31but it still means you have two chippies
0:40:31 > 0:40:33hanging out of Chris' newly plastered ceiling -
0:40:33 > 0:40:35it's not going to go well.
0:40:35 > 0:40:39- That is the last bit of plastering happening in this house.- Lovely.
0:40:39 > 0:40:40Oh, no, it isn't.
0:40:40 > 0:40:42All people who've stopped plastering take one step forward.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45Chris, where do you think you're going?
0:40:45 > 0:40:48Erm, we've knocked holes in the back room for the hoist boys,
0:40:48 > 0:40:52and, er...we've got to pull the ceiling down, OK? Sorry about that.
0:40:52 > 0:40:53What do you mean, "OK"?!
0:40:53 > 0:40:57How can you drop a line like that, and end it "OK"?
0:40:57 > 0:40:58There's nothing OK about it!
0:40:58 > 0:41:00I thought he took that very well, actually.
0:41:01 > 0:41:03Anyway, onwards and upwards.
0:41:03 > 0:41:05We've got to do what we can, because it's important.
0:41:05 > 0:41:08The way ahead for this family isn't easy.
0:41:09 > 0:41:13Meeting Jason was a turning point for you in your life.
0:41:13 > 0:41:16Well, it was just like a breath of fresh air, really,
0:41:16 > 0:41:18and it was so unexpected.
0:41:18 > 0:41:21I mean, I wasn't really looking for a relationship,
0:41:21 > 0:41:23or looking for love, as it were.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25I just thought, you know, it would be nice
0:41:25 > 0:41:27to have a bit of fun and go on a few dates
0:41:27 > 0:41:29and whatever happened happened -
0:41:29 > 0:41:31but I certainly never expected to get married,
0:41:31 > 0:41:34and I definitely didn't expect to have two more children.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37But life has hit the family with another terrible blow,
0:41:37 > 0:41:39as they've since found out
0:41:39 > 0:41:41that the couple's daughters Lily and Poppy
0:41:41 > 0:41:43have inherited Fabry's disease.
0:41:43 > 0:41:46It turns out that Jason's mum also has it.
0:41:48 > 0:41:53With the girls having being diagnosed with Fabry's disease,
0:41:53 > 0:41:55is that a real worry long-term for you?
0:41:55 > 0:41:57Does it weigh on Jason's mind?
0:41:57 > 0:42:00He feels that he's burdened the girls
0:42:00 > 0:42:02with this terrible genetic disease, you know?
0:42:02 > 0:42:06There's a lot of guilt going on with Jason and his mum.
0:42:06 > 0:42:09That can't be their responsibility, that can't be...
0:42:09 > 0:42:11It would be different if they knew about it
0:42:11 > 0:42:13and they went on to have children and pass it on
0:42:13 > 0:42:14to children knowingly,
0:42:14 > 0:42:17but, of course, Jason's mum didn't know about it,
0:42:17 > 0:42:20and Jason didn't know about it until I was 20 weeks pregnant.
0:42:20 > 0:42:22You know, he feels guilty
0:42:22 > 0:42:24for putting me and the girls through all this.
0:42:24 > 0:42:27You wouldn't have the girls, though, would you?
0:42:27 > 0:42:29Exactly - and they're gorgeous.
0:42:29 > 0:42:31- They are. - I wouldn't be without them.
0:42:31 > 0:42:35Jason is always saying to me that I'd be better off without him,
0:42:35 > 0:42:39and that I bet I wish that I'd never met him,
0:42:39 > 0:42:42but, you know, I don't wish that at all.
0:42:42 > 0:42:44I think they need to know what an amazing man their dad is.
0:42:44 > 0:42:46SHE SOBS
0:42:50 > 0:42:51This is a strong family
0:42:51 > 0:42:56facing more than any of us can ever truly understand.
0:42:57 > 0:42:59The love being poured into the fabric of their home
0:42:59 > 0:43:03by the local community, I hope, will make them feel supported.
0:43:04 > 0:43:07Jules is running, because we're running out of time,
0:43:07 > 0:43:10with only one day left before we give it back to Jason and Liz.
0:43:10 > 0:43:12..two, three!
0:43:12 > 0:43:15Now, there's the small matter of moving the Wendy house,
0:43:15 > 0:43:18which was built by Grandad for the kids and has to remain intact -
0:43:18 > 0:43:20but preferably on the other side of the garden.
0:43:20 > 0:43:22This is how they did the pyramids.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25Do you know summat? I actually think it looked better here.
0:43:25 > 0:43:27It's staying. Inside...
0:43:29 > 0:43:31You wouldn't know, would ya?!
0:43:31 > 0:43:32..Mark has got away with it.
0:43:32 > 0:43:35Ceiling all strengthened and plastered just in time,
0:43:35 > 0:43:38as the boys installing the hoist are ready to go.
0:43:38 > 0:43:40Good job.
0:43:40 > 0:43:42What the house needs, though, is warmth.
0:43:42 > 0:43:45The trouble is, cos it's so wet and cold outside,
0:43:45 > 0:43:47even though the sun's out, nothing's drying in here.
0:43:47 > 0:43:49We need to get this heating system, as magical as it is,
0:43:49 > 0:43:52commissioned, so that we can get the radiators on.
0:43:52 > 0:43:53Have you seen any plumbers?
0:43:53 > 0:43:55Dotted around, stuck to radiators somewhere upstairs -
0:43:55 > 0:43:58but you're right, we do absolutely need to get the heating on.
0:43:58 > 0:44:00- Time is running out. - Otherwise none of this will dry out.
0:44:00 > 0:44:03- Let me see if I can find them. - Plumber! Any plumbers around?
0:44:03 > 0:44:06You see, everyone inside and out are going hell for leather
0:44:06 > 0:44:08trying to get all of those last jobs done.
0:44:13 > 0:44:15Well, that's the four cubes, five cubes of concrete in,
0:44:15 > 0:44:18which we're now going to settle down, but whilst we're doing that,
0:44:18 > 0:44:20it means we can get the concrete mixer out
0:44:20 > 0:44:23and we can get the oil in, cos they need to fill up the oil
0:44:23 > 0:44:24so we can get the central heating started,
0:44:24 > 0:44:27so we can start drying out the inside of the house.
0:44:27 > 0:44:30Then we get that out, because up the end of the road is a tractor
0:44:30 > 0:44:32with four tonnes of topsoil for the back garden
0:44:32 > 0:44:33which needs to get in.
0:44:33 > 0:44:35It is a bit like Piccadilly Circus here, at this stage -
0:44:35 > 0:44:37everybody's kind of cottoned on to the fact
0:44:37 > 0:44:40that if we don't do it all at once, we don't get it done at all.
0:44:40 > 0:44:42But we have the materials,
0:44:42 > 0:44:44we have the trucks and we have plenty of help.
0:44:44 > 0:44:45Painters are painting,
0:44:45 > 0:44:48this gentleman here is waiting to put up a wardrobe,
0:44:48 > 0:44:50fitted in here, as we speak, it's all...
0:44:51 > 0:44:53If you see a gap, jump in it.
0:44:57 > 0:44:59As you can see, it's late in the evening, now,
0:44:59 > 0:45:02and people are still working away,
0:45:02 > 0:45:05because they want to get it done, and they're kind of aware
0:45:05 > 0:45:06that we're running out of time.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08Luke, at this stage in proceedings,
0:45:08 > 0:45:10do you think, maybe, that your garden design
0:45:10 > 0:45:12- might have been a tad ambitious? - Mm...
0:45:12 > 0:45:14THEY CHUCKLE
0:45:14 > 0:45:18No, I think... Nah, everything's possible, innit?
0:45:18 > 0:45:22It will definitely be done for Friday. Definitely.
0:45:22 > 0:45:25That's the day after we're supposed to show it to the family.
0:45:25 > 0:45:27THEY LAUGH
0:45:27 > 0:45:29Yeah, that ain't going to work, chaps.
0:45:29 > 0:45:30This build really is going down to the wire -
0:45:30 > 0:45:32and talking of wires,
0:45:32 > 0:45:34this eye control kit is finally up and running.
0:45:36 > 0:45:38- Working and everything?- Yep. - Brilliant.
0:45:38 > 0:45:41The local community have pulled out all the stops
0:45:41 > 0:45:42to give us a fighting chance
0:45:42 > 0:45:45of giving this house back to Liz and Jason all complete.
0:45:45 > 0:45:47You know, we might just do it.
0:45:51 > 0:45:53Just nine days ago,
0:45:53 > 0:45:56we found a young family who had hit crisis point.
0:45:57 > 0:46:00Just a huge shock, really,
0:46:00 > 0:46:02and I just couldn't stop crying.
0:46:02 > 0:46:05Jason was battling life-limiting illnesses
0:46:05 > 0:46:08in a house which no longer worked for his needs.
0:46:08 > 0:46:11Worse still, the unheated building
0:46:11 > 0:46:13was dangerous for him and his family.
0:46:15 > 0:46:18My biggest concern is obviously the safety for the kids,
0:46:18 > 0:46:20and, I mean, I want them to be able to go to bed
0:46:20 > 0:46:23and then get up and it be safe.
0:46:23 > 0:46:25You can see he gets so frustrated with it,
0:46:25 > 0:46:28and I think it gets him down to see the house in this state,
0:46:28 > 0:46:32when he was the one that was making it all better, basically.
0:46:32 > 0:46:36This was a family who couldn't do it on their own, and needed help...
0:46:37 > 0:46:40..and it was the local community that came to the rescue,
0:46:40 > 0:46:44and amazingly, in just over a week, they've completely transformed
0:46:44 > 0:46:47this impractical house into a wonderful home.
0:46:49 > 0:46:51By extending at the back,
0:46:51 > 0:46:53we've completely re-ordered the downstairs
0:46:53 > 0:46:56by creating an open-plan kitchen/diner.
0:46:56 > 0:46:59It's now a new, fresh and vibrant space
0:46:59 > 0:47:02with life-enhancing natural materials.
0:47:04 > 0:47:08What Jason needed the most was a downstairs bedroom,
0:47:08 > 0:47:11and now he has a comfortable nature-inspired room
0:47:11 > 0:47:16to soothe away the stress and anxiety of daily life.
0:47:16 > 0:47:19Now it will be his private room with a view.
0:47:22 > 0:47:25Next to the bedroom, we've created a functional wet room
0:47:25 > 0:47:29that subtly looks after their needs now
0:47:29 > 0:47:30and Jason's in the future.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35Leading off the kitchen is the playroom/study area
0:47:35 > 0:47:40designed with Jason in mind - he now has a safe contained area
0:47:40 > 0:47:41to look after the girls
0:47:41 > 0:47:44in the precious time he has left with them.
0:47:47 > 0:47:49The lounge has been transformed into an inviting room
0:47:49 > 0:47:51for the whole family to come together
0:47:51 > 0:47:56where they can feel the warmth of the new wood-burning stove.
0:47:56 > 0:47:58There are gentle reminders of Jason around the room,
0:47:58 > 0:48:03and Oliver's idea of the comfort blanket has come up a treat -
0:48:03 > 0:48:07now the girls can snuggle up to Dad for years to come.
0:48:07 > 0:48:09The whole of the downstairs is now on one level,
0:48:09 > 0:48:14and all the doors have been widened, making it all wheelchair friendly.
0:48:14 > 0:48:17Upstairs, we have given the bathroom a fresh new look,
0:48:17 > 0:48:19and Emily deservedly has the master bedroom,
0:48:19 > 0:48:22which we've turned into a rich and moody boudoir,
0:48:22 > 0:48:25creating the perfect place for her to escape to.
0:48:26 > 0:48:29Lily has her own bedroom all to herself
0:48:29 > 0:48:31and her very first grown-up bed.
0:48:33 > 0:48:35Poppy has the perfect little girl's room,
0:48:35 > 0:48:38displaying bags of colour everywhere you look.
0:48:39 > 0:48:43It was a bit of an effort, but we've managed to transform the garden
0:48:43 > 0:48:45into a beautiful beach-themed area,
0:48:45 > 0:48:48making it accessible but functional.
0:48:48 > 0:48:52It's the perfect place for the whole family to relax in.
0:48:52 > 0:48:57More importantly, it's a home ready to make memories to last forever.
0:49:03 > 0:49:05Well, it's been a bit of a struggle, to be honest,
0:49:05 > 0:49:09but it's been a good turn-out, and everybody's worked really hard
0:49:09 > 0:49:12to try and give you the home that you need.
0:49:12 > 0:49:14So, if you're ready -
0:49:14 > 0:49:15three, two, one...
0:49:15 > 0:49:16Open your eyes.
0:49:16 > 0:49:18Oh, my God, where are we?
0:49:18 > 0:49:22- Wow! That's amazing.- Wow!
0:49:24 > 0:49:26- We've added on the side of the building...- Right.
0:49:26 > 0:49:28..and we've added on the back of the building,
0:49:28 > 0:49:31so, essentially, that bit in there is your old house.

0:56:53 > 0:56:58..we can make a lot of memories now, and not worry about the house -
0:56:58 > 0:57:00and it's all because of you people.
0:57:03 > 0:57:06It looks fantastic - it's so amazing.
0:57:06 > 0:57:08Come and meet some of the guys.
0:57:08 > 0:57:10We do decorating...
0:57:11 > 0:57:15It's unimaginable how Liz has come to terms
0:57:15 > 0:57:17with the diagnosis for members of the family -
0:57:17 > 0:57:20and, of course, Jason has a very tough road ahead of him,
0:57:20 > 0:57:23but at least what these guys have done is given them space
0:57:23 > 0:57:26and the environment in which to build those all-important memories.
0:57:26 > 0:57:29We just sort of bungle through life, not making memories,
0:57:29 > 0:57:33not spending time telling the people we love how we feel about them.
0:57:33 > 0:57:36There's something we can learn from Jason, I think.
