0:00:02 > 0:00:03I miss our little chats.
0:00:03 > 0:00:06I miss her coming home or into a room, smiling,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09and I still expect her to come in one day
0:00:09 > 0:00:11and to be as she was.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14We're here to help mum Charlotte,
0:00:14 > 0:00:17who's fighting to recover from a life-shattering event...
0:00:17 > 0:00:21It was horrific and then you're just sort of riding a storm.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24..to reunite a family forced to live apart.
0:00:24 > 0:00:29- Is there something you would love to give to the boys?- Yeah, together.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31All I want is for us to be that family unit
0:00:31 > 0:00:34that we talked about before the stroke.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36We're building a home where they can be together,
0:00:36 > 0:00:38but it's going to take an army...
0:00:38 > 0:00:42It's amazing. A lot of people doing a little can make a big difference.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45..and a lot of blood, sweat and tears.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47This is what puts the job over.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49Can you not see the amount of work that's got to be done?
0:00:49 > 0:00:51But it will be worth it.
0:00:51 > 0:00:55THEY GASP It's kind of cool, isn't it?
0:00:57 > 0:00:58We have all the usual suspects
0:00:58 > 0:01:01and our designer this week is the lovely Gabrielle Blackman.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03We only have nine days to do the job.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!
0:01:06 > 0:01:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:01:22 > 0:01:25The beautiful Welsh border town of Monmouth
0:01:25 > 0:01:28is home to the Fairlie family - Charlotte, Rob,
0:01:28 > 0:01:32and their twin boys, Teddy and Fox.
0:01:32 > 0:01:37Video technician Rob and childcare worker Charlotte met ten years ago.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39Char was flanked by a few guys
0:01:39 > 0:01:42and then after I went to go and say hello,
0:01:42 > 0:01:45there was another guy and I'm, like, queuing to say hello.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48So, when I eventually said hello, I said,
0:01:48 > 0:01:50"Can I be fourth in line to buy you a drink?"
0:01:50 > 0:01:53And she said, "Yeah", and that was it.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57Three years ago, they got married and bought a run-down house
0:01:57 > 0:02:01to renovate, ready to start their family life together.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Then Charlotte found out she was pregnant...with twins.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08Having twins was so exciting
0:02:08 > 0:02:14- and we were obviously elated, shocked, pleased. Brilliant!- Yeah.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17You'd been working with children for so long, you were born to be a mum.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20All went well until late into the pregnancy,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22when Charlotte developed high blood pressure.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25She was monitored as a precaution
0:02:25 > 0:02:27but there was no sign of what was to come.
0:02:31 > 0:02:35Charlotte gave birth to two healthy boys - Fox and Teddy.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39But just minutes later, she suffered a massive stroke,
0:02:39 > 0:02:41a rare but devastating event.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Suddenly, she was gone from being quite excited,
0:02:44 > 0:02:49even during the Caesarean, and then just being asleep.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52But worse was to come.
0:02:52 > 0:02:54After a week in a coma,
0:02:54 > 0:02:58Charlotte suffered a brain bleed and needed emergency surgery.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01It was horrific.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03The surgeon said that Charlotte had a 1% chance
0:03:03 > 0:03:05of surviving the operation
0:03:05 > 0:03:09and we were told to expect, you know, the worst.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15Against the odds, Charlotte pulled through.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17But the stroke left her with brain damage,
0:03:17 > 0:03:20speech loss and partial paralysis.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24She spent a further nine months in hospital.
0:03:24 > 0:03:28With Rob constantly by her side, Charlotte's big sister, Angie,
0:03:28 > 0:03:31took on the role of mum to the twins.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34Rob struggled to cope with what happened to his wife,
0:03:34 > 0:03:40let alone the arrival of two little boys who need 24/7 care
0:03:40 > 0:03:43so, as a family, we all tried to do our best
0:03:43 > 0:03:44to support him and help him through.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47You can imagine it was just a horrendous time.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53After months of intensive rehab, Charlotte is back home.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56Physically, she's defying expectations,
0:03:56 > 0:04:01slowly teaching herself to walk and battling hard to regain her speech.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05But the stroke had another cruel complication.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Charlotte remembers nothing about going to hospital,
0:04:09 > 0:04:12and all the bits of Charlotte being pregnant,
0:04:12 > 0:04:15- Charlotte can't remember either. - Totally.- And giving birth.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Even pictures don't really trigger any memory.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21- You just don't remember that time. - No.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27Charlotte is now desperate to make up for lost time,
0:04:27 > 0:04:30create new memories with her boys and be a mum 24/7.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36But their house is making that impossible.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40The cramped cluttered rooms are unsafe for Charlotte to move around
0:04:40 > 0:04:44and there's nowhere for her to do her physio, hampering her recovery.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46BABY CRIES
0:04:46 > 0:04:49Looking after Charlotte and the twins
0:04:49 > 0:04:52is absolutely exhausting for Rob and it's taking its toll.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55It's impossible to juggle a full-time job,
0:04:55 > 0:05:00being a dad with twins, you know, and a full-time job as a carer.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04He desperately needs help, especially at nights,
0:05:04 > 0:05:08but there's no spare room for anyone to stay over, to give them respite.
0:05:08 > 0:05:14So, Rob is struggling to take care of Charlotte and the boys full-time.
0:05:14 > 0:05:18The children are basically living half the week away from home.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21It's not through choice.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24We don't have the space or facilities in the house
0:05:24 > 0:05:29- just to be a normal family. - Painful, yeah. Mm.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34It's hard. It's hard for Charlotte, I think, more than anyone.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36She'd love to be with the boys more.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38That's the main thing, really,
0:05:38 > 0:05:42is to get Mummy, Daddy, Fox and Teddy all living together.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44It'll be lovely to be at home with Mummy and Daddy.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50All I want is for us to be that family unit that we talked about
0:05:50 > 0:05:53before the whole brain injury, before the stroke.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55That's all I want.
0:05:57 > 0:06:01And that's why we're here, to bring this fractured family back together.
0:06:01 > 0:06:05To what extent have you now taken over talking for Charlotte
0:06:05 > 0:06:09- and to what extent do you let Rob talk for you?- All the time.
0:06:09 > 0:06:14I have to stop myself from jumping in and talking for Charlotte
0:06:14 > 0:06:15because Charlotte's got to practise.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18So, you can speak but it's actually processing a sentence together.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Process, yeah.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23- So, it's easier say "Yes" and "No" sometimes?- No, yeah.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Tell us about this house then. I notice on the wall is a little sign
0:06:27 > 0:06:29- from your occupational therapist. - Yeah.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Trying to build in the fact that the stairs can become
0:06:32 > 0:06:35- an exercise for you, rather than something to fear.- Yeah.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37- So, this is something to embrace. - Yeah.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40Because we can build the house two separate ways.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42We can build it so that it's got lifts and pulleys and things
0:06:42 > 0:06:45or we could actually make it something to help you progress.
0:06:45 > 0:06:49That's it, because Charlotte had a stroke at a relatively young age.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51For people of an older generation,
0:06:51 > 0:06:53they would need all the gubbins to help
0:06:53 > 0:06:55but actually, with Charlotte,
0:06:55 > 0:06:59cos her brain's so plastic and her body can still crack on,
0:06:59 > 0:07:03those become like a sort of barrier, if you like,
0:07:03 > 0:07:06- because that'll stop Charlotte from progressing.- Yeah.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08- So, some tough love, basically. - Yeah, tough love.
0:07:08 > 0:07:13Yeah, if Char can do her physio in the house,
0:07:13 > 0:07:15if the boys can be here with us, we're...
0:07:15 > 0:07:18I feel we're waiting to start as a family.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20- We haven't really started as a family yet.- Yeah.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23- I'm going to get the designer to come round and see you.- Yeah.
0:07:23 > 0:07:24I want you to have ownership.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Just because you can't communicate at the moment,
0:07:27 > 0:07:30- I don't want that to stop you being part of it, OK?- Yeah.- Good.- Yeah.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32All right, we ought to get you under way.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35Monmouth is a small, close-knit community
0:07:35 > 0:07:39and it looks as though half the town has turned out to help.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42APPLAUSE
0:07:42 > 0:07:43When Charlotte had a stroke,
0:07:43 > 0:07:46she lost the ability to communicate that well and walk
0:07:46 > 0:07:50but, unlike, most, she's much better and it's going to take many years
0:07:50 > 0:07:52and, hopefully, with your help, that can happen
0:07:52 > 0:07:55and we can finally be a family and the parents we want to be.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58- So, thank you all and good luck. - APPLAUSE
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Right, let's get cracking. We've got the usual nine days
0:08:01 > 0:08:04to turn this cramped little house into a dream family home.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07The groundwork guys have given us a head start
0:08:07 > 0:08:11by putting in the foundations for an extension.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15The scaffolding's up and, wow, look at the size of that!
0:08:15 > 0:08:20No prize for guessing who's going to want first dibs on that big boy.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24We're going to get the crane to lift the digger into the back garden
0:08:24 > 0:08:27cos, as normal, scaffolding's in the way,
0:08:27 > 0:08:29so the boys have very kindly offered to lift it over the roof.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31No problem at all.
0:08:31 > 0:08:35I'm not sure that's why we've got a gigantic crane here, Jules.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39If something does go wrong, it's 1.6 tonnes
0:08:39 > 0:08:42that would fall through the house, but that's all right -
0:08:42 > 0:08:45we have the manpower to put it back together again.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Now the digger has landed, the trades can get stuck in,
0:08:52 > 0:08:55ripping, chipping and hammering out the inside.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59When it comes to designers,
0:08:59 > 0:09:01we always look forward to working with Gabrielle Blackman.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04We love her! We treat her like a little sister,
0:09:04 > 0:09:07which I guess makes us the annoying older brothers.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13Somebody - and I know it wasn't you -
0:09:13 > 0:09:16somebody put my phone...changed the time on my phone
0:09:16 > 0:09:19to three hours ahead. And this is NOT funny!
0:09:19 > 0:09:21But you just wake up and realise and go back to bed.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24No, no, cos my alarm went off and it's day one of the build,
0:09:24 > 0:09:26so I'm in a panic.
0:09:26 > 0:09:30Sp, I jump out of bed, shower, hair in rollers,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32full make-up in my kimono...
0:09:32 > 0:09:34- And it's four o'clock in the morning.- 4am.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37It's four in the morning and it's NOT funny!
0:09:37 > 0:09:39- THEY LAUGH - Go on, stomp off.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41I'm stomping off in the right direction!
0:09:41 > 0:09:42Do your big cheese stomp.
0:09:42 > 0:09:46- She mistook the other day and stomped into a cupboard.- Did she?
0:09:46 > 0:09:47THEY LAUGH
0:09:47 > 0:09:49'Ah, bless!
0:09:49 > 0:09:51'She may not have mastered the art of a good stomp,
0:09:51 > 0:09:54'but she's got this design lark down pat.'
0:09:55 > 0:09:58This is all about creating a home for the whole family
0:09:58 > 0:10:00that gives them the space to come back together
0:10:00 > 0:10:02and for Charlotte to recover.
0:10:02 > 0:10:06We're building a timber-framed two-storey extension,
0:10:06 > 0:10:08which will double the ground floor space
0:10:08 > 0:10:11to provide an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area,
0:10:11 > 0:10:14and reconfiguring the existing ground floor
0:10:14 > 0:10:18to create a playroom with space for Charlotte to do her physio.
0:10:20 > 0:10:22Upstairs, we're using the extra space
0:10:22 > 0:10:24to extend the twins' room
0:10:24 > 0:10:27and, importantly, create a much-needed guest bedroom,
0:10:27 > 0:10:30which means a carer or Auntie Angie can stay overnight
0:10:30 > 0:10:32so the family can be together.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37The family bathroom will become an en suite, making it more accessible
0:10:37 > 0:10:42and user-friendly for Charlotte, and we're adding a separate wet room.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Finally, we're going to break up the sloping garden,
0:10:46 > 0:10:49so Charlotte can get outdoors to continue her rehab.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54Charlotte is a busy mum and she wants to be
0:10:54 > 0:10:57really hands-on with her kids and I know, having spoken to her,
0:10:57 > 0:11:00she puts herself last and Rob is really worried about this,
0:11:00 > 0:11:04so anything we can do to keep her rehabilitation
0:11:04 > 0:11:06as part of her daily life,
0:11:06 > 0:11:08so the stairs, the steps down to the garden,
0:11:08 > 0:11:11everything that we've thought about with the layout,
0:11:11 > 0:11:14I just want it to be a fun place for them all to be,
0:11:14 > 0:11:17so she can recover and look after the boys at the same time.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21- So her physio becomes part of her everyday life.- Yeah.- Very clever.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25The Monmouth trades have lost no time gutting the old house.
0:11:25 > 0:11:28Just as well, because I think I hear the sound
0:11:28 > 0:11:31of a new flat-pack extension arriving.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33- LORRY REVERSE ALARM BEEPS - Keep going!
0:11:37 > 0:11:43- I don't want to put any pressure on here.- Go on.- But you've designed it.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45- Yeah.- Is it all going to fit? - I feel confident it will.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48- He doesn't feel the pressure, does he?- Not at all, not at all.
0:11:48 > 0:11:49Gentlemen, thanks for doing this.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52It's brilliant. If we can get this in and wrapped up in two days,
0:11:52 > 0:11:56as you would say in gorgeous Wales, tidy darts.
0:11:56 > 0:11:58Tidy darts - absolutely.
0:11:58 > 0:12:02Tidy what? Joking aside, this a big job.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05It's going to need pinpoint accuracy. Look at that!
0:12:05 > 0:12:08Could you give me a decent tape? I lost mine on my last job.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11No, cos the last job I give you the other one, you broke that as well.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14- No, I didn't! Can you try and give me...- No, I will not!
0:12:14 > 0:12:19- There's Perryman.- Where?- Just went past.- Trying to pinch my tape.
0:12:19 > 0:12:22- He's not having it. - I don't do it, as a rule.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24MARK LAUGHS
0:12:24 > 0:12:26That probably is his best joke ever!
0:12:26 > 0:12:29I think Mark's got the measure of Billy.
0:12:29 > 0:12:30All right, moving swiftly on.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33So, we've got a new bit of kit that shows you the top of the house,
0:12:33 > 0:12:35and look how beautiful Monmouth is.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38The new extension will go straight out onto the garden,
0:12:38 > 0:12:40where Gabby's got her heart set on a stone patio.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42What are you worried about, Jules?
0:12:42 > 0:12:45- I think it's too time-consuming to do in the time we've got.- Yes.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49- We talked about doing it in timber. - No, it's just too slippy.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52- It's a hazard and also, maintenance...- Yes.
0:12:52 > 0:12:57The other alternative is the composite that looks like timber
0:12:57 > 0:13:00- but it's supposed to be non-slip. - They love natural wood.
0:13:00 > 0:13:04- I'd rather use something real and lovely.- Yeah.- Yes.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07If we absolutely have to go down that route...
0:13:07 > 0:13:10Can I just suggest there is a way of laying stone
0:13:10 > 0:13:13over the top of that decking? There is a method for doing it.
0:13:13 > 0:13:14I was at a yoga centre recently
0:13:14 > 0:13:17and they had that out the back of the yoga centre.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19It wasn't a yoga centre - it was a pub.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22If there is a way of me having a stone surface,
0:13:22 > 0:13:23that's all I'm interested in.
0:13:23 > 0:13:27I don't really care how you get it up. I just want it stone.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31'Er, um, a bit personal. Quick, move on!
0:13:31 > 0:13:33'Now, there's always a danger with older houses
0:13:33 > 0:13:35'that once you start stripping things out,
0:13:35 > 0:13:37'you find all kinds of problems lurking.'
0:13:37 > 0:13:40We've got a bit of an issue with the side of the house, in that...
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Well, is it a big issue? I don't know, really.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46You decide for yourself. The side of the house might fall off.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49Literally, the whole side of the house might fall off.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52If you follow that line up, you can see that it's actually separating.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55That looks like a lot of extra work we weren't counting on,
0:13:55 > 0:13:58but we don't really want bits of the house falling on people -
0:13:58 > 0:14:00not on day one anyway!
0:14:00 > 0:14:02We're going to have to go outside
0:14:02 > 0:14:05and put some strong boys in the brickwork on the outside
0:14:05 > 0:14:09- to hold that end up. Whatever you do, do it double.- Yeah.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11There's a lot of people running around,
0:14:11 > 0:14:14so where you'd normally have three acrows, we'll put five.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16That's not really double, is it, Chris?
0:14:16 > 0:14:19Once the extension's complete,
0:14:19 > 0:14:22we'll need to put a lot more strength back into this house,
0:14:22 > 0:14:25but at least that's slotting together like a dream.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28Just the roof to go. Here it comes.
0:14:32 > 0:14:34It's amazing!
0:14:35 > 0:14:38What do you guys think of your first day doing this?
0:14:38 > 0:14:41We've had a great day, to be honest. We're up to the roof level,
0:14:41 > 0:14:43we should be in the dry before end of play today.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45We're just glad that we're helping and trying to make a difference
0:14:45 > 0:14:48- to somebody else.- Thank you so much, my loves, thank you.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51It's that kind of positive attitude all around the country
0:14:51 > 0:14:53that lets us do these ridiculous builds.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56If you look at the original house - I've just come through
0:14:56 > 0:14:59where the old wall used to be - there's all this extra room.
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Essentially, we've doubled the size of the downstairs.
0:15:02 > 0:15:04Not bad for a day. We're going to have this watertight
0:15:04 > 0:15:07by the end of the day. Just as well, cos it's going to rain tomorrow.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10Look at that - our new bit of kit again.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14Morning, morning, morning, morning!
0:15:14 > 0:15:19Today, we're expecting something big, red and shiny onsite.
0:15:19 > 0:15:21No, not Billy's nose. Or that steel.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24Oh, that IS what we're talking about.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28Oh, that! Yes, we've asked them to come out and hose down Mark.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31He just doesn't know anything about it.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33SIREN WAILS
0:15:34 > 0:15:38- Is there a fire?- We're here to help. - What, building?- Give it a go.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41- Oh, yeah? You're here to join us for today?- We here for a bit.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44- Between your shifts?- Yeah.- Thank you, ladies and gents.- No worries.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47We really have got the whole community getting involved.
0:15:47 > 0:15:51These are the boys and girls of the Monmouth fire station.
0:15:51 > 0:15:55We do see people in very tough situations,
0:15:55 > 0:15:57but we don't usually see people at this part.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00We see it on jobs and then we're kind of detached
0:16:00 > 0:16:02from any recovery or anything like that.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04So, it's great for us to be part of something here
0:16:04 > 0:16:07which is the next step on, if you like, after they've had that trauma.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10It's great to be part of someone's recovery and recuperation.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Doesn't that warm the cockles of your heart? It warms mine.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Unlike this old chimney, which won't be warming anybody's cockles.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20We're turning part of the existing living room area into a playroom
0:16:20 > 0:16:22for the boys and a physio space for Charlotte,
0:16:22 > 0:16:26which means getting rid of the chimney breast downstairs.
0:16:26 > 0:16:29A good tip, not just to knock out the chimney breast at the bottom,
0:16:29 > 0:16:33- about having a good look at what's up top.- You're right, yeah.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35- There's a tremendous lump of weight there.- There is.
0:16:35 > 0:16:38I can see the bricks have been removed and this is just floating.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40We'd better do something about it.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42- Do you know a man who could maybe sort this out?- I do.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45- Who's that? - THEY LAUGH
0:16:45 > 0:16:48We're already using a lot of steels to strengthen the house,
0:16:48 > 0:16:51but we hadn't planned on having to shore up the chimney as well.
0:16:51 > 0:16:53By the time we've finished, this house will have
0:16:53 > 0:16:55more heavy metal than Metallica.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57But it's not the metal that's important -
0:16:57 > 0:16:59it's the manpower to make it happen.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01Everyone's working hard to create a home
0:17:01 > 0:17:05that will enable the family to finally be together full-time.
0:17:05 > 0:17:09Charlotte's best friends know how important that is to them.
0:17:10 > 0:17:13- I'm Lizzy.- Lizzy.- I'm Ruth.- Ruth. Hello, nice to meet you.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16- Who's that down there? - This is Sylvie.- Sylvie. Hello.
0:17:16 > 0:17:19Sylvie's a day younger than Teddy and Fox,
0:17:19 > 0:17:22so Char and I were both pregnant at exactly the same time.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25- Thanks to MY wedding.- We know that's where... Is that what happened?
0:17:25 > 0:17:28Yeah, that's what you get with a free bar.
0:17:28 > 0:17:29THEY LAUGH
0:17:29 > 0:17:33How much are we actually seeing of the real Charlotte?
0:17:33 > 0:17:36Because it's very difficult for us to know, having not met her before.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38Quite a bit, I think.
0:17:38 > 0:17:42I mean, even from the start, she's still been there to us.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45She's still been the same personality. That is her.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47She's always that sunny disposition.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49A huge responsibility for Rob to take on -
0:17:49 > 0:17:51thinking that he was going into hospital
0:17:51 > 0:17:53and coming back with a wife and two children
0:17:53 > 0:17:55and to come back and be a carer.
0:17:55 > 0:17:59It's just crazy and I don't think a lot of people would have pushed
0:17:59 > 0:18:01as much as he pushed in the early days.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05When I was visiting her in the rehab centre when she was in hospital,
0:18:05 > 0:18:08it was him that was pushing for the next step that she could make
0:18:08 > 0:18:10and it was him that really did push the whole way through
0:18:10 > 0:18:13and I think it's a lot down to that she got out of hospital
0:18:13 > 0:18:15as quickly as she did,
0:18:15 > 0:18:17given the severity of what she was going through.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19Kind of more important now to build a place
0:18:19 > 0:18:21where she can be reintroduced to her twins.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24She was robbed of that maternal instinct
0:18:24 > 0:18:27because of not actually remembering being pregnant,
0:18:27 > 0:18:29not recognising the twins.
0:18:29 > 0:18:32So, what, as a mother, is just instinctive,
0:18:32 > 0:18:34Charlotte has had to learn that
0:18:34 > 0:18:37and she has an amazing bond with her children and they with her.
0:18:37 > 0:18:40You can see it. She's just amazing with them.
0:18:40 > 0:18:42So, this house will make a real difference.
0:18:42 > 0:18:44It will make the world of difference to them.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47They can be just a normal family, which is all she ever wanted.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51And that's what we all want for Charlotte.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56One of the biggest issues for Charlotte since the stroke
0:18:56 > 0:18:59is how it's affected her speech and communication.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Gabby wants to make sure her voice is heard,
0:19:04 > 0:19:08so she's popping round to sister Angie's, for a chat with Charlotte.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13- If I just get some colours out. - Yeah.- I just want this to be right.
0:19:13 > 0:19:16It's your home and I want you to feel it's right for you.
0:19:16 > 0:19:19- You don't have to choose particular colours.- Yeah.
0:19:19 > 0:19:23Are there some that you really love or some you really don't like?
0:19:23 > 0:19:25- Yes, yeah.- Mm-hmm.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29No. Yes.
0:19:29 > 0:19:35- This sort of soft...- Yeah. - ..natural spectrum, you like.- Yeah.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38Practically speaking, what's the hardest thing?
0:19:38 > 0:19:42Oof, um, the leg.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45- Mm-hmm.- Um, arm.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47Speech.
0:19:47 > 0:19:53- What is that stopping you from doing at home?- Shower, bath, no, no.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56Sad.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59When was the last time you were able to have a bath at home?
0:19:59 > 0:20:05- Oh, I can't remember.- Yeah.- Yeah.- A long time ago.- Yes, long time.- Yeah.
0:20:05 > 0:20:09From looking around, you've got a lot of equipment that you need,
0:20:09 > 0:20:12- a lot of physio stuff.- Yeah. - How hard work is that?
0:20:12 > 0:20:17- Are you having to do exercises every day?- Extra day, yeah, extra day.
0:20:17 > 0:20:18Yeah.
0:20:18 > 0:20:22Up and down and walk the miles.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26- Yeah.- Going up and down the stairs is good for you, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:20:26 > 0:20:30- Are you OK on the stairs? - Yes, fine, yes.- That's good.
0:20:30 > 0:20:34- Up and down, the banisters. - Mm-hmm.- Yeah.
0:20:34 > 0:20:37And Fox and Teddy - is there something really special
0:20:37 > 0:20:40that you would love to give to the boys?
0:20:40 > 0:20:43- Yeah, together.- Just to be together?
0:20:43 > 0:20:46- Yeah, yeah.- Oh, darling, we can sort that out.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49I think that was a great chat with Gabby and shows that,
0:20:49 > 0:20:51even with limited speech capability,
0:20:51 > 0:20:54Charlotte can be part of the decision-making.
0:20:55 > 0:21:00- Don't pick the lime green! - Still trying to get her way.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03Back onsite, we're bidding farewell to our firefighters,
0:21:03 > 0:21:06who've given the build a much-needed lift.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11That was nice, wasn't it? They just turned up.
0:21:11 > 0:21:12They had an hour and a half off, popped in,
0:21:12 > 0:21:15fiddled around with the steels, helped clear out the garden
0:21:15 > 0:21:17and off they went to save somebody else's lives.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20- We are like an emergency service. - No, we're not.- Yeah.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22We're like the fifth emergency service.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24No, we aren't. We really aren't.
0:21:24 > 0:21:28SIREN WAILS
0:21:28 > 0:21:32No time for dad dancing. We've got a chimney to shore up. Get on with it!
0:21:32 > 0:21:34Chris, make some sense, please.
0:21:34 > 0:21:39We want to release this here, so we have to catch the top of the chimney
0:21:39 > 0:21:43by spreading the load over a steel, just to sustain the chimney.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46- It's just like kind of threading a needle.- Nice and steady.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48A big needle.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50Looks like it's going to fit.
0:21:52 > 0:21:55Now we can safely smash that chimney down.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57I love it when a plan comes together.
0:21:59 > 0:22:00It's only day two,
0:22:00 > 0:22:02but we've already got loads of trades onsite,
0:22:02 > 0:22:04all doing their bit for Charlotte, Rob and the boys,
0:22:04 > 0:22:07and it surprises even seasoned builders
0:22:07 > 0:22:09who've been doing it for years.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12- It's amazing what a lot of people doing a little...- Yeah.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14It can make a big difference, can't it?
0:22:14 > 0:22:16Now, it may look chaotic
0:22:16 > 0:22:20but these trades have a good eye for detail - not only with their work.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25What's going on with your eyebrows? THEY LAUGH
0:22:27 > 0:22:29Caught out.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32Seriously, cos all young dudes are doing all this stuff, aren't they,
0:22:32 > 0:22:34with their eyebrows? My son does it. So, what's going on?
0:22:34 > 0:22:37- You have them trimmed up?- Yeah. - Is that the look now, is it?
0:22:37 > 0:22:39I'll do mine tonight!
0:22:39 > 0:22:41THEY LAUGH
0:22:41 > 0:22:43'For an old dog like me,
0:22:43 > 0:22:46'I'd like to see less man-scaping and more landscaping.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48'But there's much going on in the garden.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51'Mike's idea for a stone-topped deck is a nonstarter,
0:22:51 > 0:22:54'so we're back to composite. Or are we?'
0:22:55 > 0:22:57I thought we had that nailed down yesterday.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59No, it's changed four times since then.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01Is there something you need to talk to me directly about?
0:23:01 > 0:23:04- Why are you still messing about? - I'm not messing about.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06Apparently, we're still discussing this deck.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08- We've sorted it now, haven't we, Jules?- Only within the last hour.
0:23:08 > 0:23:10Is it anything like the thing we decided
0:23:10 > 0:23:12at about two o'clock yesterday afternoon?
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Probably about ten o'clock yesterday morning, we decided it
0:23:15 > 0:23:17and we've gone full circle, back to where we were.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19- No, we didn't decide it. - That's what I said
0:23:19 > 0:23:22is the most practical solution and what's going to work.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24But it also needs to look fabulous.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28So now we are, 36 hours later, back at the exact spot
0:23:28 > 0:23:30where we started off yesterday,
0:23:30 > 0:23:33much to the disgust of our esteemed designer.
0:23:33 > 0:23:35I may just as well have been standing at that wall
0:23:35 > 0:23:38- head-butting it for two days. That's what I feel like.- Mm.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41- Not that wall. It would have fell down.- It would have fell down.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43THEY LAUGH
0:23:43 > 0:23:44Yes, years ago, before health and safety,
0:23:44 > 0:23:46we got him to run at a wall to knock it over.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48It worked very well, I have to tell you.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50With the main structural work out of the way,
0:23:50 > 0:23:53the trades inside are charging ahead.
0:23:53 > 0:23:57The last three days, we've been really working so hard
0:23:57 > 0:24:00and now we've got a production line doing all the down lighters.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02It looks good, doesn't it?
0:24:02 > 0:24:05I'm just going to go and make a cup of tea, boys. Are you all right?
0:24:05 > 0:24:09Lovely. No sugars in mine, thanks, Billy. My body is a temple.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11We may have an embarrassment of sparks,
0:24:11 > 0:24:14but we're short of bodies in other areas.
0:24:14 > 0:24:17We've only got two plasterers and we should have 14.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19- IN MARK'S IRISH ACCENT: - We've already lost an hour.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22That's 14 hours' labour. I'm just hoping the numbers will build.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25For everybody else, "ars" are "hours".
0:24:25 > 0:24:27We need to plasterboard the whole house today,
0:24:27 > 0:24:30so Chris has come up with a novel way to speed things up.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33Stairwell too small to take the plasterboards upstairs,
0:24:33 > 0:24:37so we've cut a letterbox in and fire them up through the floor.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40Remind me never to let him anywhere near...let him near...let him...
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Remind me to invite him over for dinner.
0:24:42 > 0:24:45I just noticed him behind me. Things are looking up on the garden front.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48The new fence is going in and we've just had a delivery
0:24:48 > 0:24:51of railway sleepers, which we're using to build raised beds.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54I've been on a health and safety course recently
0:24:54 > 0:24:57and I discovered that if you don't warm up properly,
0:24:57 > 0:24:59you can get into all kinds of trouble.
0:24:59 > 0:25:03MUSIC: Waltz No 6 In D Flat, Op 6, No 1 by Chopin
0:25:11 > 0:25:13You're just trying to hold out your warm-up routine
0:25:13 > 0:25:15until we've finished, are you?
0:25:15 > 0:25:17That's an outrageous suggestion!
0:25:28 > 0:25:32- Phew!- I think you're more tired out after the warm-up
0:25:32 > 0:25:34than actually lifting THE piece of wood.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Time for a cup of tea, I think.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38'But in fact, there's no time for a brew,
0:25:38 > 0:25:41'because we've got some important earth-moving going on
0:25:41 > 0:25:43'in the back garden.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46'We need to take advantage of that amazing view out the back,
0:25:46 > 0:25:49'and the thing about a garden is, if you get it right,
0:25:49 > 0:25:52'you can increase your living space by up to 50%.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55'This is a place where Charlotte can come and work on her rehabilitation,
0:25:55 > 0:25:57'spend time with the kids,
0:25:57 > 0:26:00'spend time as a family, out in the open air.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02'And on a day like this, why wouldn't you?'
0:26:03 > 0:26:04Since the stroke,
0:26:04 > 0:26:07Auntie Angie's house has become a haven for Charlotte and the boys.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10Even with six children and three grandchildren of her own,
0:26:10 > 0:26:13Angie has been a rock to the family.
0:26:13 > 0:26:14How soon was it apparent
0:26:14 > 0:26:17- that Charlotte's stroke was a very severe one?- Very soon.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20They said, "We've got to move her to Cardiff.
0:26:20 > 0:26:24"We've got to operate on her brain straightaway
0:26:24 > 0:26:27"to relieve the pressure."
0:26:27 > 0:26:29So, Mum actually said goodbye to her.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34She said, "Charlotte, if you need to go, we'll look after the boys."
0:26:34 > 0:26:36So, um...
0:26:39 > 0:26:42Luckily, she fought on. I couldn't help Charlotte get better.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45The only thing I could do for Charlotte was look after the boys,
0:26:45 > 0:26:48so I wanted to do that the best I could.
0:26:49 > 0:26:52And how is it being a sort of surrogate mum of twins?
0:26:52 > 0:26:55It, well, just shock, really, all round.
0:26:55 > 0:26:58And not really like being a mum
0:26:58 > 0:27:01- because we were constantly conscious of Charlotte.- Of course.
0:27:01 > 0:27:03I wouldn't let anyone near those twins
0:27:03 > 0:27:05because Charlotte had to do everything first,
0:27:05 > 0:27:08so if anyone knocked on the door, I'd say, "You can't come in.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10"You're not seeing the twins before Charlotte.
0:27:10 > 0:27:12"You're not holding the twins before Charlotte."
0:27:12 > 0:27:16It was all about keeping them for Charlotte and that was it.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19We photo'ed them and filmed them daily, everything,
0:27:19 > 0:27:22so that Charlotte now has a record of every day she missed.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25And how's that relationship developing
0:27:25 > 0:27:26between her and her boys now?
0:27:26 > 0:27:29It's really coming on now, since Charlotte was able to...
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Well, Charlotte came out of hospital after nine months,
0:27:32 > 0:27:34so it's all picked up.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36Unfortunately, Char has to do loads of therapies and things,
0:27:36 > 0:27:39so she still can't be with the boys as much as she'd like to,
0:27:39 > 0:27:42but the bond's really there now, which is lovely.
0:27:42 > 0:27:44When you're sat here with the twins
0:27:44 > 0:27:48and your little sister next to you on the sofa, is it the same?
0:27:48 > 0:27:50- No, she's a different person now. - Is she?
0:27:50 > 0:27:53She is a different person now, yeah. But we all change.
0:27:53 > 0:27:55She's still my little sister
0:27:55 > 0:27:57and I'll always love her and look after her.
0:27:57 > 0:28:00I want to talk about Rob a little, because Rob's thinking,
0:28:00 > 0:28:03"Great, a baby's going to come along," and this whole new life...
0:28:03 > 0:28:08- Yeah.- ..ceases to exist, pretty much, doesn't it?- Yeah.
0:28:08 > 0:28:12Yeah, it's horrendous. I'm not surprised he struggled to cope.
0:28:12 > 0:28:14I don't think anyone wouldn't struggle to cope.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Charlotte was the one that did everything.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19She was organised, she looked after Rob.
0:28:19 > 0:28:23So, for him to be left in the position he's in and is still in,
0:28:23 > 0:28:26to a degree, it's horrendous, and I think he's still struggling with it.
0:28:26 > 0:28:30He's still struggling to come to terms with what's happened.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33It's not how it was meant to be.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43Back on site, our plasterers have already boarded out the extension,
0:28:43 > 0:28:45ready for the concrete screed.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48We want the whole ground floor to be level, so there are no steps
0:28:48 > 0:28:51or trip hazards for Charlotte or two lively toddlers.
0:28:54 > 0:28:57- Have you seen the new swimming pool? - Let's have a look. Look at that.
0:28:57 > 0:28:59Isn't that beautiful? It's a bit dark though.
0:28:59 > 0:29:01It's a bit dark for telly.
0:29:01 > 0:29:03We're supposed to be making this look glamorous, mate.
0:29:03 > 0:29:05What would you be using in the film game to light all this?
0:29:05 > 0:29:08He was a film electrician. That's why he's rubbish at house electrics.
0:29:08 > 0:29:12I'm a bloody good house electrician, I'll tell you, I'll sort you out.
0:29:12 > 0:29:16- Not so good on sentences.- No, still haven't sorted THAT out!
0:29:16 > 0:29:20'Bless him. You can always rely on Billy.'
0:29:20 > 0:29:24After a slow start today, the pace has really, really picked up.
0:29:24 > 0:29:26The upstairs rooms are beginning to take shape.
0:29:26 > 0:29:28Putting in the guest bedroom is crucial
0:29:28 > 0:29:30to the family being together.
0:29:30 > 0:29:33It will give them the space for someone to stay over
0:29:33 > 0:29:35to help out and that's everything.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39Standing up here, looking out, one of the things you really notice
0:29:39 > 0:29:41is the amazing views off the back of this house.
0:29:41 > 0:29:43And they say that if you can see nature,
0:29:43 > 0:29:47your chances of recovery improve by anything up to 30%.
0:29:47 > 0:29:49That's got to be good news for Charlotte, hasn't it?
0:29:49 > 0:29:50Beautiful. Look at it.
0:29:56 > 0:29:59The call to arms went out and we've now got an army of plasterers,
0:29:59 > 0:30:02which is good news, especially for Chris,
0:30:02 > 0:30:05as there are lots of walls and ceilings for them to do battle with.
0:30:08 > 0:30:10- It's good to go. All right, bud? - Yeah.- Thank you.
0:30:10 > 0:30:12Yeah, look at him. He's happy.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15Now, the bifold doors have arrived, which is good,
0:30:15 > 0:30:19because it'll open out onto that beautiful vista from the kitchen.
0:30:19 > 0:30:21Great. Trouble is, there's something in the way.
0:30:23 > 0:30:25That will fly in there.
0:30:26 > 0:30:28No way. No way.
0:30:28 > 0:30:30LAUGHTER
0:30:30 > 0:30:32Yes, the old measuring up first, Mark.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34Remember we talked about that earlier on?
0:30:34 > 0:30:36OK, back on the van, lads.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40One of the things I love most about The Big Build
0:30:40 > 0:30:42is the people who turn up to lend a hand.
0:30:42 > 0:30:44- There's a rumour onsite you're a champion bricklayer.- That's right.
0:30:44 > 0:30:49- Was in 2003, yeah.- Champion of where?- Wales. Welsh champion.
0:30:49 > 0:30:52- Welsh champion?- Yeah.- So we've got a champion bricklayer of Wales in,
0:30:52 > 0:30:55- and we've got you doing what? - I'm cutting some leadwork...
0:30:55 > 0:30:57THEY LAUGH
0:30:57 > 0:30:58..to fix this lintel, so hopefully,
0:30:58 > 0:31:01we don't get any damp in the front of the house.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03- We're honoured to have you on board. - I'm honoured to be here, guys.
0:31:03 > 0:31:05Isn't that lovely?
0:31:05 > 0:31:08And we get it all the time - people who really enjoy joining in.
0:31:08 > 0:31:10Unbelievably, the new extension is already plastered
0:31:10 > 0:31:13and the team are steaming through the upstairs rooms.
0:31:13 > 0:31:16Everyone's just here to help and when you have a bit of bad luck,
0:31:16 > 0:31:19there's nothing more pleasing than people coming together
0:31:19 > 0:31:23to help someone for a cause like it is, ain't it?
0:31:23 > 0:31:26He's right, but it's lovely to hear, don't you think?
0:31:26 > 0:31:28It's take two on the bifold doors.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31The scaffold has been shifted back to make room for them to fit -
0:31:31 > 0:31:34we hope. And they're now...
0:31:34 > 0:31:37slotting in like a dream. There we go.
0:31:37 > 0:31:39- Happy days!- Happy days.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45- Does it all fit?- They don't fit!
0:31:45 > 0:31:48Couple of minor technical adjustments.
0:31:48 > 0:31:52- What, like the scaffold was in the way...- Minor adjustments.
0:31:52 > 0:31:56- But they look beautiful, absolutely gorgeous.- Yeah.
0:31:57 > 0:31:59So, let's take stock.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01We're more than halfway through our Big Build
0:32:01 > 0:32:04and the garden's finally taking shape.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06The first flight of stone steps are in.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09These will be great for Charlotte's rehab
0:32:09 > 0:32:11and we're building raised planters either side.
0:32:13 > 0:32:15For Charlotte, these are fantastic
0:32:15 > 0:32:18because it means you're not bending down to ground level.
0:32:18 > 0:32:19Much more pleasing on the eye
0:32:19 > 0:32:23and it adds height and texture to the garden as well.
0:32:23 > 0:32:26It doubles up. It could become a sandpit as well.
0:32:26 > 0:32:29I think he's joking, but we are all about options.
0:32:29 > 0:32:32Inside, the kitchen cabinets are going in.
0:32:32 > 0:32:34The new open-plan kitchen will give Charlotte plenty of room
0:32:34 > 0:32:38to move around, which should make life that little bit easier.
0:32:41 > 0:32:45Ah, what have we got here then? A bevy of beauties painting.
0:32:45 > 0:32:48Oh, and another beauty in the corner.
0:32:48 > 0:32:51Thank you very much for giving up your weekend. I hope you enjoy it.
0:32:51 > 0:32:53We can only pay you with food.
0:32:53 > 0:32:57- Can we get the odd peck on the cheek, Billy?- Yes, course you can.
0:32:57 > 0:33:00I'm happy with that. Mwah. Thank you.
0:33:02 > 0:33:07Come on, son! Do you want a peck on the cheek? There you are, see.
0:33:07 > 0:33:10No favouritism here, is there?
0:33:11 > 0:33:14Well, I hope they're all up-to-date on their inoculations.
0:33:14 > 0:33:16It finally had to happen, I suppose,
0:33:16 > 0:33:19but rain rarely stops play on a Big Build,
0:33:19 > 0:33:22especially when there's so much at stake for the family.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27My daughter's got twin girls as well,
0:33:27 > 0:33:29about the same age as the twins here,
0:33:29 > 0:33:33and I know what hard work it is. Gosh, unbelievable.
0:33:33 > 0:33:36When one runs one way, one runs the other way, what do you do?
0:33:36 > 0:33:38So, I can imagine how hard it is for these people.
0:33:38 > 0:33:40He's right, of course.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43Twins are a wonderful gift but they're a lot of hard work,
0:33:43 > 0:33:45and it has been hard for the whole family,
0:33:45 > 0:33:48so when Charlotte had her stroke, the impact was felt by everyone,
0:33:48 > 0:33:51but no-one more so than Rob.
0:33:51 > 0:33:54You went into hospital with your wife,
0:33:54 > 0:33:57expecting to come home with twins.
0:33:57 > 0:34:02- Yeah.- You came home the father of twins, but also then a carer.- Yeah.
0:34:02 > 0:34:04How do you begin to get your head round that?
0:34:04 > 0:34:08It was horrific and then you're just sort of riding a storm.
0:34:08 > 0:34:12- Are you still riding a storm? You are a bit, aren't you?- I haven't...
0:34:12 > 0:34:15I don't feel I've, um... I'm not sure if I've come to terms with it.
0:34:15 > 0:34:18I haven't really... I haven't had a conversation with Char
0:34:18 > 0:34:21since the boys, so for a year and five months.
0:34:21 > 0:34:23- You miss her?- Hugely.
0:34:25 > 0:34:27I miss our little chats.
0:34:27 > 0:34:32I miss her coming home or into a room, smiling,
0:34:32 > 0:34:36and I still expect her, maybe, to come in one day
0:34:36 > 0:34:38and to be as she was.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41But I don't like to say it too much cos I don't want her to feel
0:34:41 > 0:34:43like she's not there either, cos she is, underneath.
0:34:43 > 0:34:45She just can't express who she is.
0:34:45 > 0:34:48- It's a different relationship, isn't it?- It is, very much so.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51And we've had that for quite a long time now.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54All I want is for us to get back to being a couple
0:34:54 > 0:34:59and that's something that no-one really sees, apart from me.
0:34:59 > 0:35:01Do you think the house being finished,
0:35:01 > 0:35:04with Char and the boys being able to stay there
0:35:04 > 0:35:06and Angie being able to come over and stay
0:35:06 > 0:35:09will give you enough confidence that it might be a new start?
0:35:09 > 0:35:14Completely. What you guys are doing might be sort of the only,
0:35:14 > 0:35:17the only way we can start as a family.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20It's a hell of a good reason to go and build a house, isn't it?
0:35:20 > 0:35:22Phew, it's the best reason I can think of.
0:35:22 > 0:35:26When all this happened, even when Charlotte came back to the house,
0:35:26 > 0:35:31and the boys... that hope just vanished.
0:35:31 > 0:35:33- It disappeared.- And now?
0:35:33 > 0:35:35It feels like it could be a whole new start -
0:35:35 > 0:35:38an environment that Char can grow and definitely get better,
0:35:38 > 0:35:41with her own motivation, which is huge, and the boys.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45Oh, it would just be... It's a dream. It's a dream now.
0:35:54 > 0:35:57Getting back to our own dream makers.
0:35:57 > 0:36:00Just a couple of days to go and Mark's gone all Braveheart.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02The garden's got to be finished by Wednesday night.
0:36:02 > 0:36:04We didn't realise how big this was going to be,
0:36:04 > 0:36:06so you have got a bit of a challenge on.
0:36:06 > 0:36:10The trades have been going hell for leather on this build,
0:36:10 > 0:36:12but there's still loads to do.
0:36:13 > 0:36:16Now, normally, Jules is never happier than when he's in a digger,
0:36:16 > 0:36:18but I think the stress of the garden build
0:36:18 > 0:36:21may have got to him a little bit.
0:36:21 > 0:36:25The powers that be have decided that this hedge is coming out.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28It would have been a lot easier to take it out four days ago,
0:36:28 > 0:36:30but there you go. Who am I to reason why?
0:36:32 > 0:36:35I've got the wrong bucket on but I'm too angry to change it.
0:36:35 > 0:36:37That's embarrassing! Digger drivers all over the country
0:36:37 > 0:36:41- will be going, "Look at that fool!"- I know!
0:36:41 > 0:36:44You are what digger drivers look up to.
0:36:44 > 0:36:46MARK LAUGHS
0:36:46 > 0:36:50- He's a digger man! - I'm the digger man!
0:36:53 > 0:36:57I'm not sure, actually, that Mark laughing at Julian's helping,
0:36:57 > 0:36:59but there you go.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01Inside, the kitchen floor's going down,
0:37:01 > 0:37:04ready for the bespoke worktops, which have just turned up.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09- Have you used the concrete in your kitchens before?- Never.- No?
0:37:09 > 0:37:12- No, this is the first time. Looks nice.- It's amazing, isn't it?
0:37:12 > 0:37:15- Whereabouts in Wales are you from? - Glasgow!- I thought so.
0:37:15 > 0:37:18THEY LAUGH
0:37:18 > 0:37:20Yep, they come from all over.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22With the scaffolding down,
0:37:22 > 0:37:25the foundation for the decking is finally going in.
0:37:25 > 0:37:28Now, there's just the matter of 25 tonnes of topsoil
0:37:28 > 0:37:31and 40 tonnes of aggregate to shift.
0:37:31 > 0:37:33But I do feel we're getting closer
0:37:33 > 0:37:35to putting some colour in the garden.
0:37:36 > 0:37:39Look at that, look. Look at the blossom over there.
0:37:39 > 0:37:43- That's not blossom, that's a... - Cherry tree.- No, what's that? A...
0:37:43 > 0:37:46- That's a, um...- Flower. - I had one of those in my garden.
0:37:46 > 0:37:50It's a big thingy tree. It's a... I'm a member of the RHS as well.
0:37:50 > 0:37:52- That's a, um...- You're right, now.
0:37:52 > 0:37:55- That's a, um...- Chestnut.
0:37:55 > 0:37:58It's not a chestnut! It's plainly not a chestnut is it?
0:37:58 > 0:38:00- They're not conkers, are they? - Magnolia.
0:38:00 > 0:38:02Magnolia - thank you very much!
0:38:02 > 0:38:06That's what it is! I might be a bit rusty on my horticulture,
0:38:06 > 0:38:09but one thing I do know - if you spend enough time in Wales,
0:38:09 > 0:38:12sooner or later, you're going to find a leak.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15- NICK LAUGHS - That's mains, that is.
0:38:15 > 0:38:17That's coming out hard, isn't it?
0:38:17 > 0:38:20Try one of the stopcocks at the front.
0:38:23 > 0:38:27- How's that?- That's it. What was that you turned off?
0:38:27 > 0:38:32- The stopcock under the hedge. - The old mains?- The old mains.
0:38:32 > 0:38:34Well found, mate.
0:38:34 > 0:38:37Luckily, we've got the local water board on tap
0:38:37 > 0:38:40and they've turned up with some very high-tech gear.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43He wants to have a look at it with his listening stick.
0:38:43 > 0:38:46- Look with your listening stick? - Yeah, that's a listening stick.
0:38:46 > 0:38:48Have you seen one of those before?
0:38:48 > 0:38:51Yeah, last time we had a broken main. Let me see if it works.
0:38:54 > 0:38:56- Anything going on?- Rubbish.
0:38:56 > 0:38:58No, I think you've got about four days left in you.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00Want to have a look? Go and have a listen?
0:39:00 > 0:39:02Let's find out which one is back live
0:39:02 > 0:39:04and then we can probably get it disconnected.
0:39:04 > 0:39:06Ain't it lovely to see a bit of old-fashioned business
0:39:06 > 0:39:09going on there? Upstairs, our trades are really cracking on.
0:39:09 > 0:39:11Mind out, there's tools everywhere. Look in there.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14The bathroom's got some tiles on in there. It's starting to take shape.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17That's the babies' room. Poke yourself through there,
0:39:17 > 0:39:19you can see there's some paper on.
0:39:19 > 0:39:22The garden has been a lot more work than we first thought,
0:39:22 > 0:39:24but we are getting there.
0:39:24 > 0:39:27Which means it must be the perfect time for Gabby to decide
0:39:27 > 0:39:30to paint all the fences a different colour, which goes down a storm.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35Can you not see the amount of other work that's got to be done?
0:39:35 > 0:39:37All the fences have got to be finished, all the turfing,
0:39:37 > 0:39:39- all the planting.- We've got loads...
0:39:39 > 0:39:42You've just put another half a day on it by painting the fence
0:39:42 > 0:39:45- that didn't need to be done.- I'm not taking away your landscapers.
0:39:45 > 0:39:48We've got decorators here, specifically to do this.
0:39:48 > 0:39:51We've got the correct paint with the proper spec and they're doing it.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54This is what puts the job over, is stuff like this.
0:39:54 > 0:39:56He's very emotional, isn't he?
0:39:56 > 0:39:58I think everyone needs to cool off a bit
0:39:58 > 0:40:01so, while gabby's team plough on with the fence...
0:40:01 > 0:40:02Black, really? Black?
0:40:02 > 0:40:04..the boys are meeting up with Rob.
0:40:04 > 0:40:08Since becoming a full-time carer and dad to twins,
0:40:08 > 0:40:11Rob has had precious little time to himself,
0:40:11 > 0:40:13so we've organised a boys' treat out.
0:40:13 > 0:40:16- Boo! - His wife gets that every morning!
0:40:16 > 0:40:18Well, I say treat - kayaking on the River Wye.
0:40:18 > 0:40:22- How do you feel? Confident? - No, not really, no.
0:40:22 > 0:40:27It looks like Jules has drawn the short straw - Billy.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04- Oh, my God!- It was planned. - You all right?
0:41:04 > 0:41:08- We went right through the middle there.- I know, we saw you.
0:41:08 > 0:41:12If you wanted to wake up very quickly, go canoeing.
0:41:12 > 0:41:15- Enjoy yourself?- This is lovely, yeah. It's been lovely.
0:41:15 > 0:41:17I feel guilty though. I feel a bit guilty.
0:41:17 > 0:41:19That's all back there when you get back there.
0:41:19 > 0:41:22This is now, just a little bit for you, do you know what I mean?
0:41:22 > 0:41:25- MARK:- You've got put positive stuff in to get positive stuff out.
0:41:25 > 0:41:27You need that in life, just to be able to bounce back and hit hard.
0:41:27 > 0:41:30- Yeah, you've earnt it. - Thanks, man, thank you.
0:41:30 > 0:41:32Billy and Jules have got to come down next.
0:41:35 > 0:41:37Here they come, here they come!
0:41:42 > 0:41:46Whoa-oa! Yay! Ha-ha!
0:41:46 > 0:41:50- Whoo!- Come on, boy!
0:41:50 > 0:41:53We're getting out here. Swim!
0:41:53 > 0:41:57- Over this way, Bill. Come here! - Swim, Jules!
0:41:57 > 0:41:59We'll see you back at Monmouth!
0:42:07 > 0:42:09Right, it's the final push.
0:42:09 > 0:42:11The decking's going down, the turf's arrived,
0:42:11 > 0:42:14so it's full steam ahead to get the garden finished.
0:42:17 > 0:42:20But the jury's out on Gabby's fence.
0:42:20 > 0:42:25- They've painted the fence black! - I know.- Dear me.- You don't like it?
0:42:25 > 0:42:28- But it's the colour of death. - THEY LAUGH
0:42:28 > 0:42:31- It's awful.- Do you not like it? - No, no, not at all.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34- Maybe you should have an interview with our designers.- I'm off!
0:42:34 > 0:42:37THEY LAUGH
0:42:37 > 0:42:40Third person has just come up to me and gone,
0:42:40 > 0:42:43- "Why did you paint the fence black?" - Cos it's going to look amazing.
0:42:43 > 0:42:45They think it looks horrible.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48Hands up how many people don't like the black fence.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50- No, come on!- Everyone.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53- Nobody likes it, Gabby. - Darling, it's magnificent.
0:42:53 > 0:42:55It makes green look incredible.
0:42:55 > 0:42:58It's an eyeliner for the garden, darling. It'll look magnificent.
0:42:58 > 0:43:03Imagine me with no eyeliner on, how horrific that would look.
0:43:03 > 0:43:07- Trust me, it's not good.- I think you're being very harsh on yourself.
0:43:07 > 0:43:08- No, I'm not, really.- No, you are.
0:43:08 > 0:43:10It's not just eyeliner, it's all the other things -
0:43:10 > 0:43:13the base, lipstick and everything. It's, er...
0:43:15 > 0:43:18'Come on, everybody! What brother hasn't been strangled
0:43:18 > 0:43:20'by his little sister at some stage?
0:43:20 > 0:43:22'We're all just one big happy family really.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25'I never thought I'd say this, but the garden's almost done.
0:43:25 > 0:43:28'We put in a special little feature for Charlotte -
0:43:28 > 0:43:30'a central rail to the stone steps.'
0:43:30 > 0:43:33It works either way, having this rail in the middle.
0:43:33 > 0:43:35If it's the left side, she can come down with her strong side
0:43:35 > 0:43:38and because we put it in the middle, she can actually go up
0:43:38 > 0:43:40on her strong side and that works the other way round as well,
0:43:40 > 0:43:42if her right side's the strong side.
0:43:42 > 0:43:44So, this stairwell in and out of the garden
0:43:44 > 0:43:47becomes part of her physiotherapy, which is kind of cool.
0:43:47 > 0:43:49That's beautiful. This has been made for us
0:43:49 > 0:43:51by a local artisan. Fantastic, isn't it?
0:43:51 > 0:43:53And to be honest, I've just seen the fence
0:43:53 > 0:43:56and look how the blossom colour pink is kicking more
0:43:56 > 0:43:58because of the black fence that's in front of it.
0:43:58 > 0:44:00And I was arguing about the black fence.
0:44:00 > 0:44:04That kind of works, doesn't it? I like it very much, actually.
0:44:07 > 0:44:08It's a mad dash to the finish line.
0:44:08 > 0:44:10It's been a tough one, to be honest,
0:44:10 > 0:44:13but we're almost there and it feels good.
0:44:13 > 0:44:16- How's it been working with everyone here then?- Wonderful.
0:44:16 > 0:44:19- Yeah, really good.- Why?- Why? - You've got to tell people why
0:44:19 > 0:44:21cos people don't know what it's like, so...
0:44:21 > 0:44:23It's just such an eye-opener.
0:44:23 > 0:44:26It's great that everybody's pulled together, all the tradespeople,
0:44:26 > 0:44:29and everybody's hearts are in the right places
0:44:29 > 0:44:31and it's just an important cause, isn't it?
0:44:31 > 0:44:34- We came on our own and have gone away as a team.- Yeah.
0:44:34 > 0:44:36- That's nice.- Really good.
0:44:36 > 0:44:39I like that. Come on your own, go away as a team.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42'I think I might have that printed on a T-shirt.'
0:44:50 > 0:44:52We arrived in Monmouth to help a family torn apart
0:44:52 > 0:44:55when mum Charlotte suffered a massive stroke
0:44:55 > 0:44:57after giving birth to twins.
0:44:58 > 0:45:01It was horrific and then you're just riding a storm.
0:45:03 > 0:45:07Against the odds, she's making remarkable progress
0:45:07 > 0:45:10but their cramped little house had nowhere for help to stay,
0:45:10 > 0:45:13and they couldn't cope with the boys full-time without it.
0:45:14 > 0:45:17Is there something special you would love to give to the boys?
0:45:17 > 0:45:20- Yeah, together. - Just to be together.- Yeah.
0:45:20 > 0:45:23They were desperate to be a family again,
0:45:23 > 0:45:27so the local trades of Monmouth and way beyond came together
0:45:27 > 0:45:29to make that dream come true.
0:45:29 > 0:45:32And this is what they achieved.
0:45:34 > 0:45:39They've taken a pokey, cluttered semi and completely transformed it.
0:45:41 > 0:45:44The new extension has doubled the ground floor,
0:45:44 > 0:45:48giving the family a beautiful open-plan living-dining space,
0:45:48 > 0:45:51with doors out to the garden.
0:45:54 > 0:45:56The cramped kitchen is no more.
0:45:56 > 0:45:59It's been replaced by modern cabinets
0:45:59 > 0:46:01and bespoke concrete worktops.
0:46:01 > 0:46:04There's now plenty of space for Charlotte to move around safely
0:46:04 > 0:46:08and even a special little spot for Teddy and Fox.
0:46:11 > 0:46:16The old living area is now a fabulous playroom for the twins
0:46:16 > 0:46:20and also gives Charlotte the space she needs for her physio...
0:46:22 > 0:46:25..with her exercise gear hidden behind sliding doors,
0:46:25 > 0:46:28beautifully decorated by a local artist.
0:46:31 > 0:46:34Upstairs, we've created a guest bedroom,
0:46:34 > 0:46:38so that now Angie or a carer can stay overnight.
0:46:38 > 0:46:41The existing bedrooms have had such a makeover.
0:46:41 > 0:46:45The twins now have a proper little boys' room.
0:46:46 > 0:46:49The old family bathroom has been transformed
0:46:49 > 0:46:54into a beautiful en suite, complete with a moveable seat in the bath,
0:46:54 > 0:46:57so Charlotte can once again enjoy a soak.
0:46:57 > 0:47:00And we've added a separate wet room,
0:47:00 > 0:47:03which will make showering much easier for her.
0:47:03 > 0:47:07Finally, the old, inaccessible, sloping garden has gone.
0:47:07 > 0:47:12In its place, a new turf lawn, split into levels
0:47:12 > 0:47:17with a deck terrace that's just perfect for family time together.
0:47:17 > 0:47:21The stone steps are flanked by giant raised planters,
0:47:21 > 0:47:24ideal for Charlotte to do a spot of gardening. Very therapeutic.
0:47:24 > 0:47:28Yes, the mighty Monmouth trades have given the Fairlies a home
0:47:28 > 0:47:32where they can finally start their family life together.
0:47:40 > 0:47:43We needed to give you space, we needed to give you a home
0:47:43 > 0:47:45where you could actually spend time with your babies.
0:47:45 > 0:47:48Everybody's really loved doing this for you. Open your eyes.
0:47:50 > 0:47:53- Ooh!- Oh, my God!
0:47:56 > 0:47:58- Whoa!- Oh, my goodness!
0:48:00 > 0:48:06- That is just incredible. - You like it?- Yeah.- It's incredible.
0:48:06 > 0:48:08- It's incredible.- Yeah!
0:48:08 > 0:48:11Gabby was keen that when she came to you with a mood board,
0:48:11 > 0:48:15- that there were things you'd like in colours and shapes and things.- Yeah.
0:48:15 > 0:48:17It's just unbelievable.
0:48:21 > 0:48:23Everything that you do, you like to go to your left.
0:48:23 > 0:48:26- It's the right side that's difficult?- Yeah.
0:48:26 > 0:48:27- The left, you know...- That side.
0:48:27 > 0:48:30So, the idea is everything that you do is thought through
0:48:30 > 0:48:35- to make it beneficial for you. - Oh, goodness.- Oh, my goodness.
0:48:35 > 0:48:38- That is just, er, wow!- Oh!
0:48:38 > 0:48:42Yeah, a little breakfast bar at the end here. You pull out the chairs.
0:48:42 > 0:48:45- Ah!- That is absolutely lovely.- Ah!
0:48:47 > 0:48:49So, in this corner here,

0:48:51 > 0:48:53- Ah!- That's brilliant.
0:48:53 > 0:48:58- Clock. Clock.- Yeah, it's a clock with the time on it.- Yeah.
0:48:58 > 0:49:00Just a little reminder.
0:49:03 > 0:49:07So, let's bring you through into your new living room area.
0:49:10 > 0:49:12- Oh, it's like a real home!- Yeah.
0:49:12 > 0:49:15Lots of room for the kids to run around in.
0:49:15 > 0:49:19- Ah, that's gorgeous.- Yeah.
0:49:21 > 0:49:25- Can you see the photos? Gorgeous. - Oh, my God!- Goodness.
0:49:25 > 0:49:28- Oh, my goodness. - Yeah, this is lovely.
0:49:30 > 0:49:33I'm speechless. It's not... It's...
0:49:33 > 0:49:37It's not the same place, in a good way. It's just unbelievable.
0:49:37 > 0:49:41I don't know how you've done it. It's beautiful, it really is.
0:49:41 > 0:49:44- I know it's always tough for you to form sentences.- Yeah.
0:49:44 > 0:49:46- And you get frustrated with it - I know that.- Yeah.
0:49:46 > 0:49:47But I would like to know,
0:49:47 > 0:49:50- can you see this making a difference for you?- Yes.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42- I know!- Yeah. It's a proper little nursery. It's lovely.
0:51:42 > 0:51:45Because of the situation that you're in, it was really important -

0:51:47 > 0:51:50- to actually get another bedroom in somewhere.- Yeah.
0:51:50 > 0:51:52- Do you want to come and see that? - Yes.

0:53:43 > 0:53:47- If you come round this side, Char. - OK.- You can then use the rail.- Ah.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07During the summer, this is where you come to recuperate.
0:54:07 > 0:54:09There's a lot of evidence that shows
0:54:09 > 0:54:12that if you can see the countryside, greenery, trees,
0:54:12 > 0:54:15- it will help with your rehabilitation.- Yeah.
0:54:15 > 0:54:18Walking up and down the garden, using the railings, should all help.
0:54:18 > 0:54:22- Yeah. Thank you.- I- didn't do it.
0:54:28 > 0:54:31- Isn't that lovely, though, to see your boys out in the garden?- Yeah.

0:54:47 > 0:54:49- Yeah, it feels like home.- Yeah.
0:54:49 > 0:54:53It feels like the space is incredible and the space of...
0:54:53 > 0:54:57- And knowing that you'll be safe with the boys here...- Yeah.
0:54:57 > 0:54:58That'll be a huge weight.
0:55:11 > 0:55:15OK, listen, we'd like you to meet the twins, but one of them's asleep.
0:55:15 > 0:55:19LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE
0:55:32 > 0:55:35- A new beginning? - Yes, um, beginning, yeah.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43- With boys, yes. - How do things change?
0:55:43 > 0:55:46Well, when Char came back to the house, um, it just wasn't...
0:55:46 > 0:55:48We couldn't be a family.
0:55:48 > 0:55:51You haven't made a house, you've made us a home,
0:55:51 > 0:55:55and for the first time, we can be a family together.
0:55:55 > 0:55:58And that wouldn't be possible without you guys - there's no way.
0:55:58 > 0:56:03And I've no idea what to say to all of you. There's so many.
0:56:03 > 0:56:06And so, from the bottom of our hearts,
0:56:06 > 0:56:08I want to thank each and every one of you individually
0:56:08 > 0:56:12for giving us a family back, which we haven't had yet.
0:56:12 > 0:56:14Does this take some of the pressure off?
0:56:14 > 0:56:17Yeah, it feels like a huge weight cos this is our base,
0:56:17 > 0:56:19this is our home, so it feels manageable now.
