0:00:02 > 0:00:05So many young boys growing up are constantly on the go.
0:00:05 > 0:00:06I was always wanting to do stuff,
0:00:06 > 0:00:08pretty much, like, from birth, really.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12My mum told me, when I was three months old, I started swimming.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15Then, when I was about four, I started tag rugby.
0:00:16 > 0:00:18And probably about age nine, I went into athletics.
0:00:19 > 0:00:23Commitment-wise, I would say from day one when he played sport,
0:00:23 > 0:00:25"If I'm going to play sport, I'm going to do it the best I can."
0:00:27 > 0:00:29But no-one knows what fate has in store for them.
0:00:31 > 0:00:34I had three strokes in the space of five months.
0:00:36 > 0:00:37He wasn't speaking.
0:00:38 > 0:00:39He wasn't swallowing.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43He wasn't sitting up on his own.
0:00:43 > 0:00:44That initial time,
0:00:44 > 0:00:47you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51When adversity strikes, the real challenge is how to move on.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55Tough for even the strongest families.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59It upsets me, because I feel like we've failed him,
0:00:59 > 0:01:02because we should be able to provide for our own son.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07But these battles don't need to be fought alone.
0:01:10 > 0:01:14The cream of Cheltenham's trades are stepping up to help this young man
0:01:14 > 0:01:17gain his independence with a brand-new home.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20They'll be working around the clock
0:01:20 > 0:01:22on one of our most ambitious builds to date.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27This is the busiest I've ever known DIY SOS Big Build.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30That house could quite easily fall down.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32When do they tear the roof off?
0:01:32 > 0:01:35I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof.
0:01:35 > 0:01:36At some stage, mate,
0:01:36 > 0:01:39we've got to stop taking things out and start putting things in.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44'Let's just hope we haven't bitten off more than we can chew.'
0:01:45 > 0:01:47- I didn't expect it to be like this. - You deserve this.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52All the usual suspects are here,
0:01:52 > 0:01:55including the designer this week, Shaun Clarkson.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58But, as usual, we only have nine days to get the job done
0:01:58 > 0:01:59and where are we going to find...?
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Mate, I'm going to have to stop you there.
0:02:01 > 0:02:02You always say that.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04You know there's going to be a massive group of people
0:02:04 > 0:02:06- stood over there. - Let's get to them then.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!
0:02:08 > 0:02:12THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD
0:02:25 > 0:02:28So, I'm going to write, "My name is Scott Jones and I'm 17."
0:02:30 > 0:02:34Some of my writing, I write right to left, so it's backwards.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37At the age of 11, this remarkable young lad suffered a series
0:02:37 > 0:02:41of strokes that took a severe toll on his mind and his body.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48That's Scott's writing, reflected in the mirror so you can read it.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52So, they think this occurred due to when my brain was trying to repair
0:02:52 > 0:02:54itself, which is common with brain injuries in children.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59Scott lives in Swindon Village, Cheltenham, with mum Liz
0:02:59 > 0:03:04and dad Gary, a factory worker, who have been together for 37 years.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07We met at school and we've been together ever since,
0:03:07 > 0:03:08since 1978, December.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12Got married in July '84.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18After 14 years, the couple finally had Scott in 1998.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24Scott enjoyed an active and sporty life, but when he was ten,
0:03:24 > 0:03:26he started to suffer unusual symptoms.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30We spent the summer down in Cornwall with my family.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32In and out of the water the whole time.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35And he started to get this discharge in his ear,
0:03:35 > 0:03:38and I thought it was swimmer's ear.
0:03:38 > 0:03:39So, we went to the doctors.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42He just looked at it and said, "Yeah, I know what that is."
0:03:42 > 0:03:44And it was a cholesteatoma.
0:03:46 > 0:03:51A cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth inside the ear.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55Left untreated, it can continue to grow and damage the brain.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Extracting the tumour normally consists of two operations.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03One to take it out, then the other one, up to a year later,
0:04:03 > 0:04:05to repair any potential damage.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12And it was the second one which he wasn't right afterwards.
0:04:13 > 0:04:18- He just didn't come round as much as I'd expected him to, did he?- No.
0:04:18 > 0:04:20It took a couple of days. He wasn't himself.
0:04:20 > 0:04:21And we took him home.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24And that day he went to school, and then he just said he felt
0:04:24 > 0:04:26a pop in his ear and woke up with his head on the desk
0:04:26 > 0:04:28and that's all we knew, wasn't it?
0:04:29 > 0:04:32And at this point, I was having a stroke, and I didn't know.
0:04:33 > 0:04:35We just couldn't find any reason for one, you know,
0:04:35 > 0:04:36they couldn't find a bleed.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39And so it was, sort of, one of those things where "We'll treat him,
0:04:39 > 0:04:41"but we don't know exactly what we're treating," I suppose.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44Over the next five months,
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Scott had two more strokes that severely affected his mobility.
0:04:50 > 0:04:51That initial time,
0:04:51 > 0:04:54you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57But Scott fought back to remain active,
0:04:57 > 0:05:01competing in the shot put at both able-bodied and disabled events,
0:05:01 > 0:05:05then narrowly missing out on selection for the 2012 Paralympics.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10However, seizures caused his condition to worsen,
0:05:10 > 0:05:14and in autumn 2013, paralysed from the chest down,
0:05:14 > 0:05:16Scott became a full-time wheelchair user.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21These enormous setbacks haven't stopped Scott.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24His love of sport is undimmed.
0:05:25 > 0:05:26These are both gold medals that I won
0:05:26 > 0:05:29at my first international outside of the UK.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Gold in the C2 shot put F32
0:05:31 > 0:05:36and gold in the C2 shot put F32, 52 and 54.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40He topped this by winning gold at the disabled World Championships
0:05:40 > 0:05:44in 2013, setting a world record in the process.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48When he stood up on that rostrum in Lyon, that was it.
0:05:50 > 0:05:51That was it for me.
0:05:52 > 0:05:56But an injury to his throwing arm ended his shot put career.
0:05:56 > 0:05:58Undeterred, Scott took up rowing instead
0:05:58 > 0:06:01and has since made the GB development squad.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04ROWING MACHINE CHAINS MOVE
0:06:07 > 0:06:09He's fought every step of the way,
0:06:09 > 0:06:12but he's fighting a losing battle at home,
0:06:12 > 0:06:15which was built in the 1960s without disabled use in mind.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20So, as well as the narrow doors that he can barely fit through,
0:06:20 > 0:06:23there's a cramped kitchen that he can only use with his parents there,
0:06:23 > 0:06:26which is a massive blow for a lad that loves to cook on his own.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29I really want to cook, but I'm not allowed to,
0:06:29 > 0:06:32due to the oven's up here and the hobs are up here.
0:06:32 > 0:06:33I can't see them in the chair.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37And if he wants a shower, well, that involves a trip to the gym
0:06:37 > 0:06:41or the hospital, because the only one in the house is upstairs.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45There's a toilet in the corner of a cramped utility room
0:06:45 > 0:06:46on the ground floor,
0:06:46 > 0:06:47but it's difficult to get to.
0:06:49 > 0:06:50'I don't really want to be crawling round,
0:06:50 > 0:06:52'especially when I've got friends round.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54'You want to be able to be independent. Everyone does.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56'But at the same time, I can't be my own person'
0:06:56 > 0:06:57due to the house isn't adapted.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02It's a claustrophobic existence for Scott throughout the house.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04The garden's a no-go area.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07He's got a lovely summerhouse that he had
0:07:07 > 0:07:09where his friends used to meet.
0:07:09 > 0:07:10He can't get down there.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13Sometimes you see him wistfully looking down there, thinking,
0:07:13 > 0:07:15- "Oh..."- "I could escape down there." - Yeah.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17There used to be his little place just to go and play.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22'He is a brave young man who just wants some freedom,
0:07:22 > 0:07:24'which this house won't allow.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27'I think this champion deserves a break, don't you?'
0:07:27 > 0:07:29If I read through all this,
0:07:29 > 0:07:32it's actually about you having independence, isn't it?
0:07:32 > 0:07:34Cos you're at the stage where you want to be doing stuff for yourself,
0:07:34 > 0:07:36and you don't want your mum and dad...
0:07:36 > 0:07:38I've only got about six months till I'm 18,
0:07:38 > 0:07:40so I'd rather have it to get myself sorted for independence.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42I don't really want parents around me all the time
0:07:42 > 0:07:43when I'm trying to do stuff.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46- Although you do love them a lot. - Oh, I love them and all that. - Of course, yeah, yeah.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49But sometimes I want my own space to be able to do my own thing.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51Yeah, and I think that's not unusual for an 18-year-old,
0:07:51 > 0:07:53- and I think every 18-year-old feels that way.- Yeah.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56You're not a lad that has let the stuff get in your way.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59And you're busy having a go and fighting against everything,
0:07:59 > 0:08:01and so these guys are going to come in and try sort something out
0:08:01 > 0:08:04for you, mate, and give you what you need.
0:08:04 > 0:08:06This is getting to you a bit, isn't it?
0:08:07 > 0:08:08Thank you.
0:08:11 > 0:08:13Tradesmen from Cheltenham and its surrounds
0:08:13 > 0:08:15have answered our call for help.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17And what a turnout.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20They all have one goal in mind - to make this house work.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28APPLAUSE
0:08:33 > 0:08:35OK, so this is the family we're working for today.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38We always like you to get an opportunity to meet the client.
0:08:38 > 0:08:39What he wants is independence,
0:08:39 > 0:08:42and he's fought so hard to be an athlete
0:08:42 > 0:08:44and he never shies away, it's fair to say,
0:08:44 > 0:08:46from any of the training or any of the difficulties
0:08:46 > 0:08:48or the physical pain of what you're doing,
0:08:48 > 0:08:51- but you're finding this quite difficult to do by comparison, aren't you?- Yeah.
0:08:51 > 0:08:52To come out and say hello to people.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55Thank you.
0:08:55 > 0:08:56HE SOBS
0:08:56 > 0:08:59We'd just like to say thank you to everyone for turning up for Scott.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03It is overwhelming and I can see why.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06He is ten days away from a bit of independence.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08Right, let's get you underway, then.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11- See you later, mate.- Thank you.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13APPLAUSE
0:09:16 > 0:09:20'Right, with the family on their way, it's time to get cracking.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22'We have the standard nine days to complete what looks on paper
0:09:22 > 0:09:24'like a rather ambitious build.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26'So, as always, we'll have our work cut out.'
0:09:27 > 0:09:31I want everything from the back here from that staircase all taken out,
0:09:31 > 0:09:32all those walls down.
0:09:32 > 0:09:33Yeah.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36As you can see, our scaffold's up and some kindly gents have
0:09:36 > 0:09:40already laid the foundations for our timber frame extension
0:09:40 > 0:09:42so we don't have to stand around waiting for the concrete to dry.
0:09:43 > 0:09:44Speaking of which...
0:09:45 > 0:09:47..here is our side extension.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50It's early, which is great news, as we've got lots to do.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56The plan is to start this build from scratch,
0:09:56 > 0:10:00and the only way to get to scratch is to smash everything up.
0:10:01 > 0:10:06MUSIC: Out Of The Black by Royal Blood
0:10:06 > 0:10:07HAMMERS THUD AND SMASH
0:10:07 > 0:10:09'I'm not going to pretend we don't love this bit.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12'What better way of a load of blokes bonding first thing in the morning?'
0:10:13 > 0:10:17People say that there aren't artisans around any more.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28'But as random bits of house flood out and get piled higgledy-piggledy
0:10:28 > 0:10:31'in the skip, it starts to make my blood boil.'
0:10:34 > 0:10:35These skips aren't airtight.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37Knowlesy's going to be, "Oh, my God."
0:10:37 > 0:10:38We'll step away.
0:10:40 > 0:10:41A skip is a very expensive piece of kit.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44And unless you pack them so that you can get them airtight,
0:10:44 > 0:10:45you're wasting half your skip.
0:10:45 > 0:10:46TWEETING NOTIFICATION
0:10:46 > 0:10:49So, I get people tweeting me from all over the country now,
0:10:49 > 0:10:51sending me pictures of their skips that are airtight.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56There you go. You see, now look at the space all of a sudden.
0:10:56 > 0:10:57Look at this.
0:11:00 > 0:11:01'The house is cleared in no time,
0:11:01 > 0:11:04'which I like to think owes a little to my skipology.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06'But we've done such a great job of dismantling it,
0:11:06 > 0:11:08'I'm trying to work out how it's still standing.
0:11:09 > 0:11:10'Let me explain.'
0:11:12 > 0:11:14So, here's our problem,
0:11:14 > 0:11:15that that's our original house,
0:11:15 > 0:11:18and we've taken all the internal walls out that hold it apart.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20And what happens is, the danger is that it'll do that.
0:11:21 > 0:11:23That house could quite easily fall down.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26And these people just give us their door keys and head off and say,
0:11:26 > 0:11:29"Yeah, thanks very much for sorting the house out."
0:11:29 > 0:11:31'Yeah, we know what were doing, don't we?
0:11:31 > 0:11:34'The short-term solution to keeping it up are acrow props,
0:11:34 > 0:11:37'but the long-term one is rebuilding it, and for that we need a plan.
0:11:37 > 0:11:38'Designer!
0:11:41 > 0:11:43'This week we have a brand-new victim, er, designer.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45'More like a fashion victim, really.'
0:11:47 > 0:11:50- What colour socks have you got on? - What colour socks have you got on?
0:11:50 > 0:11:51- Orange, of course.- Orange? - Orange.- Orange.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53Don't ask him about his underpants.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57'Shaun Clarkson has an international reputation for avant-garde design,
0:11:57 > 0:12:00'working with both commercial and residential properties.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02'That's very fancy, isn't it?
0:12:02 > 0:12:06'Who knows what this orange opulentist is going to come up with
0:12:06 > 0:12:09'when he's let loose on a three-bed in Swindon Village?'
0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Hello, Shaun. - Hello, nice to meet you.- Yeah.
0:12:12 > 0:12:13- Welcome to the show. - Thank you very much.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16I've had a word with the boys already on this particular outfit.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18- And what do they say?- They think you got dressed in the dark.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20- Yes, I still think I'm 23. - THEY LAUGH
0:12:20 > 0:12:23- Is that what the 23-year-olds are wearing at the moment? - I think so, yes.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25Wait till the colours go on the wall.
0:12:25 > 0:12:26The outfit reflects the colours.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28Well, we did say at least one thing, one of my big bugbears
0:12:28 > 0:12:31is that designers are constantly putting grey on the walls.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33- I presume we're not having any grey on the walls?- No.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35I've got a bit of an issue about grey as well, actually.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39I think it's overused. It's a great foil for other colours.
0:12:39 > 0:12:40SHAUN LAUGHS
0:12:40 > 0:12:41Already I like this man.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44'And I like the look of the plan, as well.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48'The ground floor as we currently know it will no longer exist.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50'Only the living room stays put.
0:12:50 > 0:12:53'The old dining room makes way for a modified kitchen,
0:12:53 > 0:12:54'with lower worktops and appliances
0:12:54 > 0:12:57'that Scott, who loves to cook, can reach.
0:12:58 > 0:12:59'The biggest change is the stairs,
0:12:59 > 0:13:01'which will now face the front of the house.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04'There's lots more space downstairs, and with widened doorways,
0:13:04 > 0:13:06'Scott will have the freedom to move around.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10'All this extra space is because of our side extension,
0:13:10 > 0:13:13'which will house a storage room for Scott's chairs
0:13:13 > 0:13:15'and, most importantly, a new bedroom,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18'with ensuite wet room so he'll no longer need to shower
0:13:18 > 0:13:20'at the hospital or gym.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23'Upstairs, the new stairs will give us a bigger landing
0:13:23 > 0:13:26'and enough space to build a sewing room for Liz
0:13:26 > 0:13:29'And the bedroom, spare room and master bedroom
0:13:29 > 0:13:31'will all be brand spanking new.'
0:13:32 > 0:13:34From a design point of view,
0:13:34 > 0:13:37there needs to be a story throughout the house that all fits together.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40'OK, so the jury may be out on his dress sense,
0:13:40 > 0:13:41'but I like his perspective.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46'Bringing Shaun's vision to life out back is a garden designer
0:13:46 > 0:13:49'who may have overlooked something.'
0:13:50 > 0:13:52- I notice there's a digger. - There is a digger, yeah.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55We've got some clearing to do. We're taking all the turf off.
0:13:55 > 0:13:57But once we've built our extension...
0:13:57 > 0:13:59Yeah, it's all going to have to stay in there,
0:13:59 > 0:14:00so we're going to have to...
0:14:00 > 0:14:02- Make a feature of the digger. Nice. - No, no.
0:14:02 > 0:14:03THEY LAUGH
0:14:03 > 0:14:04- Not of the digger.- Looks good(!)
0:14:04 > 0:14:06Hopefully we'll get the digger back out.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09- All right, well, I'd better think about that.- OK.
0:14:10 > 0:14:14'With the house now deemed stable, Billy's electricians are in.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16'But the man himself is sporting an injury.'
0:14:16 > 0:14:18I call it white finger.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21When you've done all your tendons through the years of chiselling
0:14:21 > 0:14:25and this vibration and it's just damaged that.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28'Use your left hand for a while. I find that often helps.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32'I think we're going to regret letting Julian loose
0:14:32 > 0:14:33'on that digger in the garden.'
0:14:34 > 0:14:35Dust?
0:14:35 > 0:14:38So, basically, considering we're not doing much of the garden,
0:14:38 > 0:14:39- they're doing quite a lot.- Yeah.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41From here, there's nothing left of the garden.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45'The problem is you put Julian in one of those machines
0:14:45 > 0:14:47'and he gets digger-happy.'
0:14:48 > 0:14:49Rhubarb!
0:14:55 > 0:14:56Oh!
0:14:57 > 0:14:58Sugar! Plenty of sugar!
0:14:58 > 0:15:01I'll tell you what, we'll keep that.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03Pick it all, we'll have a rhubarb crumble tonight.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06'Isn't it poisonous raw? I'm sure it is.'
0:15:08 > 0:15:11- You have devastated our garden. - I haven't, he has.
0:15:11 > 0:15:13She told me to do it. I'm scared of her.
0:15:13 > 0:15:15- AMERICAN ACCENT:- She's small, but she's wild.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Small but wild!
0:15:17 > 0:15:20Well, all I can say is good luck, I hope you get finished on time.
0:15:21 > 0:15:24'Ignore him, honestly. Gardens take time to come together.
0:15:24 > 0:15:26'Besides, you have a good-looking plan.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31'There'll be a brand-new patio that's flush with the inside
0:15:31 > 0:15:33'so Scott can get out there.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35'We're laying new turf, with new flowers around the borders
0:15:35 > 0:15:38'for Scott's mum Liz, who's a keen gardener.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41'The summer house stays for its sentimental value.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44'Winding down throughout is a resin bound gravel path,
0:15:44 > 0:15:46'which will let Scott into the garden
0:15:46 > 0:15:48'for the first time in five years.
0:15:48 > 0:15:51'The path leads down to a brand-new workout room for Scott,
0:15:51 > 0:15:55'so no more twice-daily trips to the gym with Mum.
0:15:55 > 0:15:56'It's brilliant.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59'Four hours in and the framework for the side extension
0:15:59 > 0:16:01'is up in record time.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05'What they really need is for me to get in there and slow them down.'
0:16:07 > 0:16:08You've kind of almost built it already.
0:16:08 > 0:16:10- You've got the two ends on.- Yeah.
0:16:10 > 0:16:11- Yeah.- It's all right? - Yeah, it's going well.
0:16:11 > 0:16:14- Where do you want to be by the end of today?- Finished.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16- Truro's a long way to drive back. - You're not from Truro.
0:16:18 > 0:16:20- You're Cornish boys?- Yeah. - Cornish boys.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Very welcome - and join us.
0:16:22 > 0:16:24That's a long way to come.
0:16:24 > 0:16:26How come you've come out all the way up here to do this, then?
0:16:26 > 0:16:29We're a small family business down in Cornwall, we got the call,
0:16:29 > 0:16:30so we decided we'd come up and...
0:16:30 > 0:16:32- You fancied having a go?- Yeah.
0:16:32 > 0:16:35- Is it what you expected to be?- Yeah. It's good. I like it.- It's fun.
0:16:36 > 0:16:37'Amazing.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40'That's a 400-mile round trip to install an extension
0:16:40 > 0:16:42'for nothing other than the benefit to Scott.
0:16:43 > 0:16:44'So, whilst they get on with it,
0:16:44 > 0:16:47'Scott's about to put in a shift of his own down at the gym.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50'Yes, his strict training regime has to continue
0:16:50 > 0:16:53'regardless of what's going on at the house.'
0:16:54 > 0:16:56We're off to the University Of Gloucestershire.
0:16:56 > 0:16:57I'm going to head on to the gym,
0:16:57 > 0:16:59so it's going to be indoor rowing today.
0:16:59 > 0:17:03I started rowing in November for recreational fun
0:17:03 > 0:17:05and then I went to the British Indoor Championships
0:17:05 > 0:17:08and came second in the arms-only class.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10Then after that, I started to take it a lot more seriously.
0:17:12 > 0:17:16At the moment, because he's not at college, I'm taking him every day.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20This will be the first of two trips here today,
0:17:20 > 0:17:23and they are essential to maintain Scott's progress.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27He throws himself into everything.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30I think if he sets his mind to it, he's got a goal, he will go for it.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32And we've seen that in his athletics.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34And we're now seeing it in his rowing.
0:17:35 > 0:17:38It's nice to see the way that he is improving,
0:17:38 > 0:17:40and he's enjoying it, as well.
0:17:41 > 0:17:44'If I hadn't had sport, then I wouldn't be where I am now.
0:17:44 > 0:17:47'And the reason I carry on is I want a Paralympic gold medal.
0:17:47 > 0:17:48'There's no doubts about that.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51'If I won a Paralympic gold, I'd want a second one'
0:17:51 > 0:17:52to prove I've done it,
0:17:52 > 0:17:54and I'd want a third one and it just carries on going.
0:17:55 > 0:17:57What an amazing lad.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01Things are looking sturdier on-site,
0:18:01 > 0:18:03which is more than I can say for our Jurassic spark.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08- That can hurt cos of pressure there.- But here?- Yes! There.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11- How old are you now? - I'm going on a bit. Yeah.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13There comes a time, Bill, where you've just got to accept
0:18:13 > 0:18:15- that, you know... - What's up with you?
0:18:15 > 0:18:17The world's caught up with you a little bit, that's all.
0:18:17 > 0:18:20- It's, you know... - Put me and you together.
0:18:20 > 0:18:23- You when we first started 16 years ago.- Yeah?
0:18:23 > 0:18:27And put me now, I am the only one that hasn't aged.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29There's more changing Jules, Chris and yourself...
0:18:29 > 0:18:32I'll tell you what, here's a picture of Jules when we started.
0:18:33 > 0:18:34'And here he is now.'
0:18:36 > 0:18:38So, that's not a great deal of difference, is it?
0:18:39 > 0:18:40Here's a picture of Christopher.
0:18:41 > 0:18:42'And Chris today?'
0:18:44 > 0:18:46- Flipping hell, what happened to him?- I know!
0:18:46 > 0:18:48That is frightening, isn't it?
0:18:48 > 0:18:50And here's a picture of me.
0:18:50 > 0:18:51'In my mum's fleece.
0:18:52 > 0:18:53'And now?
0:18:53 > 0:18:54'Uh-oh.'
0:18:55 > 0:18:58- Actually, I've aged bad as well, haven't I?- No, I can't say you have.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00Here's a picture of Bill when we first started.
0:19:00 > 0:19:03And Billy today...
0:19:03 > 0:19:05He's tampered with the pictures.
0:19:05 > 0:19:07To be honest, there's not a great deal of change.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09- There ain't. - HE MOUTHS
0:19:09 > 0:19:12- What?- Nothing, nothing, nothing. - No?
0:19:14 > 0:19:15As the day draws to a close,
0:19:15 > 0:19:19electrical and plumbing works are underway, almost all the new windows
0:19:19 > 0:19:23are in upstairs, and the side extension is up, believe it or not.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25But it's now trapping several tonnes of rubbish
0:19:25 > 0:19:28in the back garden. Oh, and Julian...and his digger.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30Other than that, it's been a great day.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32Well, this is our extension. Big, isn't it?
0:19:32 > 0:19:35Behind this wall is another room,
0:19:35 > 0:19:37which we can't get to until we knock a door in to.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40Let me show you what's going on inside.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42Well, not going on, going out. Everything in the entire house.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46Look at the downstairs. Everything's gone other than the chimney breast.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48If you come round this way,
0:19:48 > 0:19:50there is a hole here where the stairs used to be.
0:19:50 > 0:19:51We decided to take those out.
0:19:51 > 0:19:54I'd like to show you upstairs, but we can't, cos we can't get up there.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57We have to put in a new staircase, which we're going to do tomorrow.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00People don't think about doing this kind of thing because it costs...
0:20:00 > 0:20:02Well, actually, only £200 for a new set of stairs. Why wouldn't you?
0:20:02 > 0:20:04- What are you doing? - We haven't quite finished.
0:20:04 > 0:20:06We've got to put a set of stairs in, cos if we don't have them
0:20:06 > 0:20:09in tonight no-one is going upstairs tomorrow to do any work.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12That's a very good point. We'll see you tomorrow.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15Sometimes you just have to take steps.
0:20:15 > 0:20:16NICK CHUCKLES
0:20:18 > 0:20:21The next morning, I meet up with Gary in the village hall,
0:20:21 > 0:20:25where he and Liz had their wedding reception over 30 years ago.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29Since then, the couple have been through thick and thin together.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34You don't have to answer this, just from a father's point of view,
0:20:34 > 0:20:36how have you dealt with all of this,
0:20:36 > 0:20:40because it's not the way you expect the world to go for your boy, is it?
0:20:42 > 0:20:44No. Em...
0:20:44 > 0:20:47Sometimes you think, "Why me?"
0:20:47 > 0:20:48Other times you think,
0:20:48 > 0:20:51"Well, if it's me, someone else doesn't have to go through it."
0:20:51 > 0:20:55But it's slightly different when it's your son. He has had dark days.
0:20:55 > 0:20:59- Yeah. - I suppose we all do, don't we?
0:20:59 > 0:21:02Dealing with Scott's injuries have been a massive challenge,
0:21:02 > 0:21:06but before he was even born, Liz was diagnosed with leukaemia.
0:21:09 > 0:21:13She'd gone in for a laparoscopy just to see why we couldn't conceive.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17She had a phone call within hours saying,
0:21:17 > 0:21:19"You've got an appointment at the Cheltenham Cobalt Unit."
0:21:19 > 0:21:22She's thinking, "You've got the wrong person."
0:21:22 > 0:21:24- That's well-known around here as a cancer unit, is it?- Yeah.- OK.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27Erm...
0:21:27 > 0:21:32She just called in there and was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia.
0:21:32 > 0:21:36At one stage, she was given three weeks to live,
0:21:36 > 0:21:37or take a new drug.
0:21:39 > 0:21:40So she said, "There isn't a choice.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43"I'll take the drug which is untested."
0:21:43 > 0:21:46Of all the guinea pigs, she's the only one still alive.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Is that right? She's the only one that pulled through?
0:21:48 > 0:21:51Out of ten, she's the only one.
0:21:51 > 0:21:52How much of a...?
0:21:52 > 0:21:55You said that Liz had an enormous determination to fight
0:21:55 > 0:21:58through her leukaemia before Scott came along.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02Has she shown that same strength and resolve all the time
0:22:02 > 0:22:05while looking after Scott as well?
0:22:05 > 0:22:07The majority, yes.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10But we all have good days and bad days.
0:22:13 > 0:22:16She is a strong person. She is determined, just like he is.
0:22:16 > 0:22:18I think that's where he gets it from.
0:22:18 > 0:22:19More than me.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23My glass is half empty.
0:22:23 > 0:22:24Hers is half full.
0:22:26 > 0:22:28Well, Gary, let's see if we can help, in some small way,
0:22:28 > 0:22:29to fill that glass up.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34Back at the house...
0:22:35 > 0:22:38..the steels have arrived, but although I'm not around
0:22:38 > 0:22:42to lend my usual assistance, they go in quickly and with relative ease.
0:22:42 > 0:22:46- Do you know why that went quite well?- Knowlesy weren't here, was he?
0:22:48 > 0:22:50That's why it went well.
0:22:50 > 0:22:51I do have feelings, you know.
0:22:53 > 0:22:55The sparks are now flying unhindered,
0:22:55 > 0:22:58and our new extension is getting bricked up.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02Pressure is on, big fella. That door is coming tomorrow.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04Yep, I'm there, I promise.
0:23:04 > 0:23:08Yes, the little fella is right, it's already starting to feel like
0:23:08 > 0:23:12no matter how fast we work, the jobs keep piling up.
0:23:12 > 0:23:14We've still got all the plumbing and electrics
0:23:14 > 0:23:15to go into the floor down here.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17We've got the steels to build up over there.
0:23:17 > 0:23:19Now we've got a porch to build as well.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22We're actually behind where we normally are.
0:23:22 > 0:23:26If you think we've got problems inside, outside there's ten tonnes
0:23:26 > 0:23:30of rubbish and two tonnes of digger trapped in the garden.
0:23:30 > 0:23:34But a low rumble in the distance heralds the arrival
0:23:34 > 0:23:36of what could be a giant solution.
0:23:36 > 0:23:40Is it a truck? Is it a train?
0:23:40 > 0:23:43No, it's a crane, and we love 'em.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46It's like International Rescue.
0:23:46 > 0:23:53HE SINGS THUNDERBIRDS THEME
0:23:53 > 0:23:56I've got a very rubbery face, haven't I?
0:23:56 > 0:23:57In no time at all,
0:23:57 > 0:24:01this king of on-site machinery has made light work of our rubbish bags,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04with each one weighing in at just under a tonne.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07That's no mean feat. Just look at it go!
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Look at him up there, living every man's dream.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15What did you want to be when you grew up?
0:24:15 > 0:24:16A crane driver.
0:24:18 > 0:24:22There you have it! He wanted to be a crane driver. Of course he did.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24Julian doesn't seem to be having as much fun.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26I'm guessing that's because he knows his digger
0:24:26 > 0:24:29is next to go over the top. All two tonnes of it.
0:24:29 > 0:24:30MUSIC: Without You by Harry Nilsson
0:24:30 > 0:24:32Hold it there, hold it there.
0:24:32 > 0:24:36They're taking my machine, I've got loads left to do.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39That's why that type of machinery has been invented -
0:24:39 > 0:24:41to take the hard work out of it.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48She's going. She's off.
0:24:48 > 0:24:52# I can't live
0:24:52 > 0:24:56# If living is without you
0:24:56 > 0:24:59# I can't live
0:24:59 > 0:25:02- # I can't give any more... # - That's him sulking now
0:25:02 > 0:25:03for the rest of the time.
0:25:03 > 0:25:07# I can't live... #
0:25:09 > 0:25:11CHEERING
0:25:14 > 0:25:17Well, he's on the shovel from here on in.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20- Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime? - Yeah, let's have one.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25Now the garden's clear, landscaping can resume.
0:25:27 > 0:25:31Back inside, Shaun wants to outline his vision for the kitchen.
0:25:31 > 0:25:35Currently, the kitchen is sitting where we're standing.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37One of the things that Scott said was that he couldn't cook,
0:25:37 > 0:25:39so we've got a split-level kitchen -
0:25:39 > 0:25:42one with a sink with a gap underneath and a hot plate
0:25:42 > 0:25:44and an oven at his level.
0:25:44 > 0:25:47Also, we've got an ordinary oven at eye level
0:25:47 > 0:25:49and a hob for his mum to cook as well,
0:25:49 > 0:25:52so the two of them can cook together or he can be independent.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55Right. There's a couple of things you missed out on the kitchen.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57- What's that?- Water and electric.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59Yes, we've moved it quite dramatically.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01There's no drains in the house here.
0:26:01 > 0:26:05- No.- So we've had to lift the floor. Look, he's digging this out.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09Well, I really hope it's going to be worth it.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Of course it'll be worth it.
0:26:13 > 0:26:17See, that's why we all love designers as builders.
0:26:17 > 0:26:19Good job everyone here sees the bigger picture.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21We're going to watch him go in there, it's going to be great.
0:26:21 > 0:26:23So rewarding to see something...
0:26:23 > 0:26:25We're going to get something for what we're putting in.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27As well as rowing for his country,
0:26:27 > 0:26:31Scott plays wheelchair rugby league for Swindon St George.
0:26:31 > 0:26:35He's invited Billy and Julian along for a training session.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37This should be funny.
0:26:38 > 0:26:39All right, Scott?
0:26:39 > 0:26:40Scott, you all right?
0:26:40 > 0:26:43- So this is it?- Yeah, this is it.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45We're playing wheelchair rugby league today.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48For a couple of year I was told I would never play rugby again.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50I didn't know the sport until last year.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52I might be in wheels, but it's not much different.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56I tell you what? You're a terrific kid. You're a terrific kid.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59No, what you've been through and you still come out smiling,
0:26:59 > 0:27:01it's brilliant. Love you lots, son.
0:27:01 > 0:27:04Don't big him up too much, he might...
0:27:04 > 0:27:06I might disappoint you, mate.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08See what sort of strength he's got.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13I'm not sure they know what they've let themselves in for here.
0:27:13 > 0:27:18This game is played at a fierce tempo and involves...Some big hits.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21Where's the exit?
0:27:21 > 0:27:22It's not for the faint-hearted.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25Be gentle with them, they haven't finished building the house yet.
0:27:25 > 0:27:27This is nervous.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29Don't worry, Billy, your dodgy hand will be OK.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32It's your knees, hips and ankles you've got to worry about.
0:27:32 > 0:27:34Go on, son.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36MUSIC: 20th Century Boy by T. Rex
0:27:43 > 0:27:46# 20th century toy
0:27:46 > 0:27:49# I wanna be your boy
0:27:49 > 0:27:53# 20th century toy
0:27:53 > 0:27:57# I wanna be your boy
0:27:57 > 0:28:00# 20th century toy
0:28:00 > 0:28:02# I wanna be your boy... #
0:28:02 > 0:28:03WHISTLE BLOWS
0:28:03 > 0:28:05Try.
0:28:07 > 0:28:09CHEERING
0:28:09 > 0:28:11Jonny Wilkinson, eat your heart out, son.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Love you, son.
0:28:16 > 0:28:18Cheers, mate.
0:28:18 > 0:28:19That was good.
0:28:20 > 0:28:23Today we've got a special DIY SOS Player Of The Match.
0:28:23 > 0:28:26Billy, come here so we can give you this trophy, mate.
0:28:29 > 0:28:32Come and share it. Six months apiece.
0:28:34 > 0:28:37I thought it was amazing. Physically, it's very hard.
0:28:37 > 0:28:41My hips, my back... They just get in there and... They're brilliant.
0:28:41 > 0:28:43Yeah, very good.
0:28:43 > 0:28:45For me, personally, wheelchair rugby league helps with,
0:28:45 > 0:28:48one, physical and, two, psychological.
0:28:48 > 0:28:51You might lose, but you're still playing. That's all that matters.
0:28:51 > 0:28:52One, two, three...
0:28:52 > 0:28:54ALL: St George!
0:29:00 > 0:29:03NICK: The next day, walls seem to have appeared overnight,
0:29:03 > 0:29:07but it's not the building fairies - there's a simpler explanation.
0:29:07 > 0:29:11It's all about preparation and setting things up ready to go.
0:29:11 > 0:29:14This morning, we were in first thing, muck was on - bang!
0:29:14 > 0:29:16Straight on the wall, no messing around.
0:29:16 > 0:29:17We could tell you were proper tradesmen.
0:29:17 > 0:29:21The two hats, the swimming trunks, the knee brace, the socks...
0:29:25 > 0:29:26That's a torn meniscus.
0:29:26 > 0:29:27- Is it?- Yeah.
0:29:27 > 0:29:31- From building work?- Servicing. That's why...- Servicing what?
0:29:31 > 0:29:32- Boilers.- OK.
0:29:34 > 0:29:38Mystery solved, thank goodness, but soon another one looms -
0:29:38 > 0:29:42the digger we lifted out the garden yesterday has somehow reappeared.
0:29:42 > 0:29:44What's going on?!
0:29:49 > 0:29:52What the...? What-what? What... What?!
0:29:52 > 0:29:54Where did...? How?
0:29:54 > 0:29:58All I can say is, when I walked in this morning, it was already here.
0:29:58 > 0:30:01Julian, you can't get the thing...out!
0:30:03 > 0:30:06But it wasn't finished with.
0:30:06 > 0:30:08- He's up to something.- Oh, no, he's definitely done something.
0:30:08 > 0:30:12- I've got lots of digging to do. - Yeah, I bet you have.- Carry on.
0:30:13 > 0:30:15Julian!
0:30:15 > 0:30:17I mean, great builder, but he's no magician.
0:30:17 > 0:30:20How did the digger get back into the garden?
0:30:21 > 0:30:24Well, he's on the shovel from here on in.
0:30:24 > 0:30:28- Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime? - Love one. Let's have one.
0:30:28 > 0:30:31Did the cameraman keep filming? He did. What's he up to?
0:30:31 > 0:30:33- Hello, mate.- Hello, mate. Are you all right?
0:30:33 > 0:30:35You know you just lifted that digger out,
0:30:35 > 0:30:37you couldn't just pop it back in again, could you?
0:30:37 > 0:30:39- Hmm... Not really.- Do you like cakes?
0:30:39 > 0:30:42- How about if I was to bribe you with that bad boy?- That would do nicely.
0:30:42 > 0:30:45- Lovely. Thank you. - Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:30:45 > 0:30:47# Dig, dig, dig, dig, digging
0:30:47 > 0:30:49# Dig a little trench with me
0:30:49 > 0:30:51# Dig, dig, dig, dig, digging
0:30:51 > 0:30:53# I can go back digging with you. #
0:30:56 > 0:30:57He's not right, is he, really?
0:30:59 > 0:31:02The final mystery du jour is we're three days in,
0:31:02 > 0:31:05and by now the house should be teeming with plasterers,
0:31:05 > 0:31:07but there don't seem to be any in sight.
0:31:10 > 0:31:13How many plasterers have you got on today?
0:31:13 > 0:31:16I've got loads, but nothing's ready to be plastered.
0:31:16 > 0:31:18- Can we not plasterboard upstairs yet?- No.
0:31:18 > 0:31:20- The electricians still in there? - About an hour. About an hour away.
0:31:20 > 0:31:22It's going to be a big plasterboarding party, isn't it?
0:31:22 > 0:31:27- It's hundreds of metres, actually, isn't it?- Yeah. Yeah.
0:31:27 > 0:31:29Behind on day three is not a good place to be.
0:31:29 > 0:31:32Mind you, it's better than being behind on day nine.
0:31:32 > 0:31:35- There, come on, now. - I'm good to go, I'm good to go.
0:31:35 > 0:31:37Sometimes when we're up against it,
0:31:37 > 0:31:39it's nice to be reminded how we got here in the first place.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43Rhys is Scott's best mate,
0:31:43 > 0:31:46and his younger sister Morgan nominated him for DIY SOS.
0:31:48 > 0:31:52Seeing what he's like in his home, it wasn't right.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55We just didn't feel that it was right for him,
0:31:55 > 0:31:58cos his parents can't be around to help him forever.
0:31:58 > 0:32:01At some point, he needs to be able to do stuff for his own,
0:32:01 > 0:32:03even if that is just making his lunch,
0:32:03 > 0:32:05which he can't do at the moment,
0:32:05 > 0:32:09cos he can't get his chair around the kitchen properly.
0:32:09 > 0:32:11He doesn't want people to feel sorry for him.
0:32:11 > 0:32:13He hates that, he absolutely hates it.
0:32:14 > 0:32:16He doesn't like if...
0:32:16 > 0:32:19If he's in his chair, he doesn't like it if you bend down to him.
0:32:19 > 0:32:22So what we do is if he's sitting on the floor and we're in the kitchen,
0:32:22 > 0:32:24we just sit on the floor with him.
0:32:24 > 0:32:26If you look up the road now,
0:32:26 > 0:32:28there's 80 people working on the house,
0:32:28 > 0:32:31cos you guys wrote in to get the help that you needed,
0:32:31 > 0:32:34so how are you feeling now it's happening?
0:32:34 > 0:32:36- Overwhelmed.- It's just amazing.
0:32:37 > 0:32:40Years, he's wanted an independence.
0:32:40 > 0:32:45Finally being able to have it, I reckon it'll be amazing for him.
0:32:45 > 0:32:48But I do think he will be a little bit overwhelmed.
0:32:48 > 0:32:49Back at the house, upstairs,
0:32:49 > 0:32:54Chris is a changed man and his plasterers are working up a sweat.
0:32:56 > 0:32:58- Feel the heat?- Yeah, body heat.
0:32:58 > 0:33:01We've seen big trowels in our time, but that one...
0:33:01 > 0:33:04- I'm not boasting, but I have got a six-foot one. You've not.- I have.
0:33:04 > 0:33:09- I've never seen you use it.- Well, I wouldn't on this, would I?- Why not?
0:33:09 > 0:33:10I don't want to damage it.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13Unbelievable.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16The feel-good factor continues when I catch up with Pete,
0:33:16 > 0:33:18a family friend, downstairs.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21My kids went to the same school as Scott did.
0:33:21 > 0:33:22We knew him before he was poorly,
0:33:22 > 0:33:26before the family had all their troubles, basically.
0:33:26 > 0:33:27Very, very lovely family.
0:33:27 > 0:33:29If this was going on across the road,
0:33:29 > 0:33:31- they'd be the first people to help. - Would they?
0:33:31 > 0:33:34They would. Scott is such an inspiration.
0:33:34 > 0:33:37But Gary and Liz seem amazing people, as well.
0:33:37 > 0:33:40They're just head down, got on, supported Scott and just graft.
0:33:40 > 0:33:44They're so busy dealing with the day-to-day, bless them, you know...
0:33:44 > 0:33:47That's what parents do, I suppose, but in this instance,
0:33:47 > 0:33:49they just keep doing it and more.
0:33:49 > 0:33:53I don't know how this family have kept so calm and just carried on.
0:33:56 > 0:33:59My hunch is it has a lot to do with Liz's determination,
0:33:59 > 0:34:01in spite of her own suffering.
0:34:03 > 0:34:06Before Scott even came along, you were very seriously ill.
0:34:06 > 0:34:11I mean, I was very poorly. But I was still determined to hang on to life.
0:34:11 > 0:34:14I never once was going to give up. I think that's just me.
0:34:14 > 0:34:15I'm just like that.
0:34:15 > 0:34:18After that as well, when Scott was six months old,
0:34:18 > 0:34:21I had problems with my jaw, they found a lump in my jaw.
0:34:21 > 0:34:25- That was cancerous in the jaw, as well, was it?- Yeah.
0:34:25 > 0:34:27I had 24 operations over a seven-year period,
0:34:27 > 0:34:30so I now have chronic pain, so if I eat anything,
0:34:30 > 0:34:33the pain is just... Well, excruciating.
0:34:33 > 0:34:36It goes right down my back and right down to the spine and into the...
0:34:36 > 0:34:38But how do you deal with that
0:34:38 > 0:34:41on top of everything else that you've got going on?
0:34:41 > 0:34:43I just do.
0:34:43 > 0:34:45It's just our way, I suppose.
0:34:45 > 0:34:47The other thing that's most impressive,
0:34:47 > 0:34:49and everyone finds really impressive about Scott,
0:34:49 > 0:34:51- is his absolute determination.- Hmm.
0:34:51 > 0:34:53- There must have been dark times. - There have been.
0:34:53 > 0:34:55There's been anger, as well,
0:34:55 > 0:34:58- but you've got to let them get it out, haven't you?- Hmm.
0:34:58 > 0:35:00Sometimes it's been turned on us, as well, more so me, I think,
0:35:00 > 0:35:04because I'm the one that's always there.
0:35:04 > 0:35:07Which has been the toughest thing to deal with - your leukaemia
0:35:07 > 0:35:10- and then cancer of the jaw or... Scott.- ..the damage to Scott?
0:35:10 > 0:35:13Definitely Scott, because as a mum,
0:35:13 > 0:35:16you want to take it on yourself, don't you?
0:35:16 > 0:35:18If I could have been in his place, I would have done.
0:35:18 > 0:35:21We were watching the athletics and he forgot that he couldn't walk.
0:35:21 > 0:35:25He just tried to stand up and just went splat to the floor.
0:35:27 > 0:35:29That's heartbreaking, isn't it?
0:35:30 > 0:35:31How can you forget?
0:35:31 > 0:35:34You know, he was in the moment, I suppose, and he...
0:35:34 > 0:35:36Does that upset you, to think he has to deal with that every day?
0:35:36 > 0:35:37Yeah, yeah.
0:35:39 > 0:35:41Yeah.
0:35:41 > 0:35:44He's very, very...Determined that you guys should get some space
0:35:44 > 0:35:46and get to do the things you want to do.
0:35:46 > 0:35:49- But he never says that. - Families don't, do they?
0:35:49 > 0:35:52No. No, I don't suppose you talk about that sort of thing, do you?
0:35:52 > 0:35:55- Do you have any hobbies?- I love dress-making, sewing, anything.
0:35:55 > 0:35:57- Do you?- Yeah. - I'm not sure there's enough room
0:35:57 > 0:35:59in the place with all the things that we're doing.
0:35:59 > 0:36:01As long as I've got a dining room table,
0:36:01 > 0:36:03- I can put my sewing machine on. - Put it on that. That's a thought.
0:36:03 > 0:36:05Right.
0:36:05 > 0:36:07We need to do the best for this family,
0:36:07 > 0:36:09and it's nice to know that we've got something up our sleeves
0:36:09 > 0:36:11for Liz, as well.
0:36:13 > 0:36:17When I get back to the house, it feels like things are coming on.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19At least we're actually getting to the stage
0:36:19 > 0:36:21where we're starting to put stuff back in rather than take stuff out.
0:36:21 > 0:36:24What are you looking at? When did they take the roof off?
0:36:24 > 0:36:27I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof!
0:36:27 > 0:36:29They've taken the whole flipping thing off.
0:36:29 > 0:36:33At some stage, mate, we've got to stop taking things out and off...
0:36:33 > 0:36:35- I know.- ..and start putting things in, because...
0:36:35 > 0:36:37These people are brilliant,
0:36:37 > 0:36:39they just really want to give them a perfect house.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43The tiles have passed their sell-by date, really,
0:36:43 > 0:36:44so we put on a new breathable membrane
0:36:44 > 0:36:46and we're going to put on some new tiles.
0:36:46 > 0:36:50Effectively, you've got a brand-new roof on a brand-new build, really.
0:36:52 > 0:36:55OK, fair enough, it's just another example of our builders going
0:36:55 > 0:36:58the extra mile, or ten miles - but we are up against it.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04Every aspect of this job seems to be soaking up valuable time -
0:37:04 > 0:37:06for instance, getting rid of this summer house
0:37:06 > 0:37:09would have made our lives easier, because it's in the way.
0:37:09 > 0:37:11But it has sentimental value, so we've kept it.
0:37:11 > 0:37:14That means moving it...four times.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18Come on, let's grab hold of it and lift it.
0:37:20 > 0:37:23Moving a shed once is a pain, even with this many men.
0:37:23 > 0:37:25To you. To me.
0:37:31 > 0:37:33Although this lot do make it look easy.
0:37:36 > 0:37:39This is great, cos you can just paint these in,
0:37:39 > 0:37:41and then, if they feel like moving it again,
0:37:41 > 0:37:43they can just move it around the garden.
0:37:43 > 0:37:46With just four days left now to complete the build,
0:37:46 > 0:37:48our kitchen has finally arrived.
0:37:48 > 0:37:50There are a few base units in,
0:37:50 > 0:37:53but there's a lot to do in very little time.
0:37:53 > 0:37:56We've just got to stretch the hours in the day to get it done,
0:37:56 > 0:37:57that's all.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59Everyone's happy to do that.
0:37:59 > 0:38:03I know people think we make this up, but, really, we are up against it
0:38:03 > 0:38:05and we've hit a snag in Scott's wet room.
0:38:05 > 0:38:08With a shower where you have the gully in the floor,
0:38:08 > 0:38:11it needs to be set so the water will go into the drain
0:38:11 > 0:38:13rather than go out the door,
0:38:13 > 0:38:14so there has to be a slight fall
0:38:14 > 0:38:18and you need to have a tray where it will do it for you,
0:38:18 > 0:38:20so basically that was our afterthought.
0:38:22 > 0:38:24So we'll have to dig out two inches of concrete
0:38:24 > 0:38:28then re-concrete back to the right height for one to fit in.
0:38:29 > 0:38:32Two words - time consuming.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38Things have moved on in the kitchen, but as it's being custom-built,
0:38:38 > 0:38:41there's plenty of detail to finalise.
0:38:41 > 0:38:43Right, so we've got that one there.
0:38:43 > 0:38:45You've got a two ring hob on that side.
0:38:45 > 0:38:47'So why are we hand-building the kitchen
0:38:47 > 0:38:49'and doing all these fiddly bits?
0:38:49 > 0:38:54'Because we're building it specifically to meet Scott's needs.'
0:38:54 > 0:38:56Basically, this house is being built from scratch,
0:38:56 > 0:38:58because we completely gutted it.
0:38:58 > 0:39:01We put a new extension on, we rewired it,
0:39:01 > 0:39:05we've replumbed it, we've put a central heating system into it.
0:39:05 > 0:39:07We've got to do the garden, we've got to do the driveway,
0:39:07 > 0:39:09we've got to walk out the door and give this back
0:39:09 > 0:39:11so that it works for Scott.
0:39:11 > 0:39:12It's a massive ask.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17'It's a massive ask, but we never throw in the towel.
0:39:17 > 0:39:20'Well, we have a good example in Scott, don't we? He never does.
0:39:20 > 0:39:23'The way that he's overcome so many obstacles
0:39:23 > 0:39:27'to pursue his sporting dreams is an inspiration to us all.
0:39:28 > 0:39:30'I caught up with him down at the gym to find out
0:39:30 > 0:39:32'how he stays so positive.'
0:39:34 > 0:39:37So, now, how hard are you training to try and make the Rio Olympics?
0:39:37 > 0:39:39Tokyo and 2020's the main goal for us,
0:39:39 > 0:39:41because I'll be 22 and I'll be fully developed,
0:39:41 > 0:39:44because my muscles aren't fully developed yet.
0:39:44 > 0:39:46So you're currently committing yourself to just over
0:39:46 > 0:39:49five and a half years of training twice a day?
0:39:49 > 0:39:50Yeah, six days a week.
0:39:50 > 0:39:53- That's a lot of training, mate. - Yeah.
0:39:53 > 0:39:56Do you ever think you've been dealt a rough hand in life?
0:39:56 > 0:39:59I know I have had problems in the past,
0:39:59 > 0:40:00but you can't really change them.
0:40:00 > 0:40:02Because if you carry on and you grieve,
0:40:02 > 0:40:04it's going to be with you for life.
0:40:04 > 0:40:07Whereas, if you just let it go, it's gone.
0:40:07 > 0:40:09And do you think you've actually managed to do that, let it go?
0:40:09 > 0:40:12I'm trying to, yeah. In the mornings, I try and stand up,
0:40:12 > 0:40:14sometimes I fall on the floor.
0:40:14 > 0:40:16Because in my dreams, I'm walking, I'm running around.
0:40:16 > 0:40:18Next thing you know, I'm trying to get out of bed
0:40:18 > 0:40:20and I'll face-plant the floor.
0:40:20 > 0:40:22Wow.
0:40:24 > 0:40:27So your brain is playing tricks on you,
0:40:27 > 0:40:28trying to stop you...
0:40:29 > 0:40:32It's almost fighting you getting used to it.
0:40:32 > 0:40:35It's quite common with a lot of the athletes.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38As well as the difficulties you're facing on a day-to-day basis,
0:40:38 > 0:40:41it's kind of been tough on your mum, too.
0:40:41 > 0:40:44Yeah, physically, because she's about 5'8, I'm 6'5,
0:40:44 > 0:40:47so there's a big height difference, and she's probably about 58 kilos.
0:40:47 > 0:40:50I'm at least 85, so she has to help me
0:40:50 > 0:40:53with lifting quite a lot at the moment.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55And she's got quite a lot of pain anyway.
0:40:57 > 0:41:00What is it that really frustrates you at the moment?
0:41:00 > 0:41:02Little things, like everyday life.
0:41:02 > 0:41:04You're like, "Oh, I can do that, I can do that"
0:41:04 > 0:41:07then I'm there, like, "Actually, I can't."
0:41:07 > 0:41:11I love cooking, yet I'm not allowed to because I can't feel my legs,
0:41:11 > 0:41:13and if I pour stuff on my legs, I won't know.
0:41:15 > 0:41:18Not being in a chair is extremely hard to explain.
0:41:18 > 0:41:20Independence is something that you had beforehand,
0:41:20 > 0:41:24you try and get it back again. It's not easy to explain at all.
0:41:24 > 0:41:27And what's the little shed at the bottom of the garden?
0:41:27 > 0:41:30It used to be where I used to go before my injury,
0:41:30 > 0:41:32my own little haven.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34So that shed's fairly important?
0:41:34 > 0:41:35Yeah.
0:41:35 > 0:41:37I don't know whether we can find one the same
0:41:37 > 0:41:39now that we've put it in a skip.
0:41:43 > 0:41:46'At the house, we're throwing everything -
0:41:46 > 0:41:48'and I mean everything and the bathroom sink at it -
0:41:48 > 0:41:50'trying to get on track.'
0:41:52 > 0:41:54It's getting crazy.
0:41:55 > 0:41:59This is the busiest I've ever known a DIY SOS Big Build
0:41:59 > 0:42:00at this stage of the build.
0:42:00 > 0:42:02Everyone walking down there, look, floor layers...
0:42:02 > 0:42:07Trying to put a membrane down. It's just absolutely crazy.
0:42:07 > 0:42:10It's been hard work. There's tilers, there's painters,
0:42:10 > 0:42:12electricians, there's plumbers.
0:42:12 > 0:42:14Everyone is working around each other
0:42:14 > 0:42:18and, you know, we're all doing it at the same time.
0:42:18 > 0:42:20'There's still a mountain to climb in the garden,
0:42:20 > 0:42:22'but we're making steady progress.'
0:42:23 > 0:42:26The patio's down here, the path's in.
0:42:26 > 0:42:28They've laid all the steps round here.
0:42:28 > 0:42:30It's absolutely beautiful. And they've carried the path
0:42:30 > 0:42:33all the way up through the garden and then it's like - bingo!
0:42:33 > 0:42:36'And, ladies and gentlemen, the piece de resistance...
0:42:36 > 0:42:39'somewhere for Scott to train. There's a way to go,
0:42:39 > 0:42:42'but when the gym equipment's in, it all starts to take shape.'
0:42:42 > 0:42:45Obviously, it's been really hard for us to design this,
0:42:45 > 0:42:48because, obviously, we're trying to look at it from his point of view.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50So we think we've done a good job.
0:42:50 > 0:42:52LAUGHTER
0:42:52 > 0:42:54You don't get many of them after a grandson.
0:42:56 > 0:43:00'Look at them! All trying to get in on the act.
0:43:00 > 0:43:02'There are still units to install, paths to lay
0:43:02 > 0:43:05'and cables to box, but Shaun, our designer,
0:43:05 > 0:43:07'is totally oblivious.'
0:43:07 > 0:43:10Great, that's lovely. The colours come out really nicely.
0:43:10 > 0:43:11'Colours?'
0:43:11 > 0:43:14Yeah, sorry, slight change of plan.
0:43:14 > 0:43:17I think we should continue the line over the architrave...
0:43:17 > 0:43:20- OK, all right.- ..of the colour. So with the light colour that half.
0:43:20 > 0:43:22All right, I'll sort it next.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25- Thank you.- No problem.- Sorry about changing things at the last minute.
0:43:25 > 0:43:27'And so you should be! We're under the most pressure
0:43:27 > 0:43:29'we've ever been under on a build,
0:43:29 > 0:43:32'and the new boy's worried about painting in half a door.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34'Although, to be fair, that sort of attention to detail
0:43:34 > 0:43:36'does make this one stand out a bit.'
0:43:38 > 0:43:41- A lot of electronics in here... - Yes.- ..connected to...
0:43:41 > 0:43:43Well, can be connected to his smartphone or tablet.
0:43:43 > 0:43:46Yeah, it's all connected through a lighting system, via Raco units,
0:43:46 > 0:43:50which are controlled by his iPad or iPhone.
0:43:50 > 0:43:53Depends on what mood he's in, he can change it up or down,
0:43:53 > 0:43:54or alter it himself.
0:43:54 > 0:43:56- Yeah.- It's all clever stuff.- Yeah.
0:43:56 > 0:43:59'Only viewers under the age of 35 understood that.
0:43:59 > 0:44:01'Path servicing is not quite as technical
0:44:01 > 0:44:04'but essential for providing Scott's step-free access
0:44:04 > 0:44:06'from the kerb right to his front door.'
0:44:06 > 0:44:08Why are we wallpapering the ceiling?
0:44:08 > 0:44:10Because I think if you sit on the sofa and you're lying back,
0:44:10 > 0:44:12you've got something nice to look at.
0:44:12 > 0:44:14Is there any of this job where you thought,
0:44:14 > 0:44:17"That probably is going to take a long time
0:44:17 > 0:44:19- "and be quite difficult, I need to compromise here"?- No.
0:44:21 > 0:44:22'That's designers for you.
0:44:22 > 0:44:25'Thanks to Shaun, there's plenty of last-minute dressing to do.
0:44:25 > 0:44:28'So it looks like this one's going right down to the wire.
0:44:30 > 0:44:32'Nine days ago, Scott Jones was barely getting by
0:44:32 > 0:44:34'in this house.'
0:44:34 > 0:44:36You want to be able to be independent
0:44:36 > 0:44:38and actually be in control of your own life.
0:44:38 > 0:44:40I get quite frustrated and sometimes upset about it,
0:44:40 > 0:44:42because I want to be my own person but at the same time,
0:44:42 > 0:44:45I can't be my own person due to house isn't adapted.
0:44:45 > 0:44:49'A world-class athlete who couldn't shower in his own home.
0:44:51 > 0:44:54'His parents were at their wits' end.'
0:44:54 > 0:44:57It upsets me because I feel like we failed him
0:44:57 > 0:45:01because we should be able to provide for our own son.
0:45:01 > 0:45:04'But this house just wasn't built to accommodate someone
0:45:04 > 0:45:05'with a serious disability.
0:45:05 > 0:45:08'The doorways were too narrow for a wheelchair.
0:45:08 > 0:45:11'Everything was the wrong height in the kitchen for a young man
0:45:11 > 0:45:12'who loves to cook.
0:45:12 > 0:45:15'The upstairs bathroom and garden were inaccessible
0:45:15 > 0:45:18'and a lack of space throughout the house meant Scott
0:45:18 > 0:45:21'was often confined to his makeshift bedroom.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24'With nothing adapted to his needs, Scott was almost totally dependent
0:45:24 > 0:45:26'on his parents.
0:45:29 > 0:45:31'Which is where the local community stepped in with a bit
0:45:31 > 0:45:34'of brute force and TLC.
0:45:34 > 0:45:37'They've put in an epic shift to turn things around.'
0:45:39 > 0:45:42Yeah, it makes you feel good that you're doing it.
0:45:43 > 0:45:46Scott's a good lad, so it's nice to give a bit back
0:45:46 > 0:45:48and help out where you can.
0:45:55 > 0:45:58'The team have transformed a cramped downstairs living area
0:45:58 > 0:46:01'into a modern, open-plan living space
0:46:01 > 0:46:04'that's fully wheelchair accessible.
0:46:04 > 0:46:06'The kitchen has moved to the back of the house
0:46:06 > 0:46:09'and contains an island that's modified for Scott.
0:46:09 > 0:46:11'With low, accessible worktops,
0:46:11 > 0:46:14'he can get under and prepare his own meals,
0:46:14 > 0:46:17'gaining some of the independence he desperately craves.
0:46:17 > 0:46:21'With widened doors down here, Scott now has the freedom to roam.
0:46:21 > 0:46:24'He no longer needs to be confined to his bedroom -
0:46:24 > 0:46:27'but it's a far better place to be now.
0:46:27 > 0:46:28'We've created a refuge
0:46:28 > 0:46:32'where an athlete can get in the right headspace for competing.
0:46:32 > 0:46:35'Patio doors provide direct access to the garden,
0:46:35 > 0:46:39'which has previously been out of bounds for Scott.
0:46:39 > 0:46:41'Next to his bedroom is a new wet room.
0:46:41 > 0:46:44'Scott now no longer needs to leave home
0:46:44 > 0:46:45'to take a shower.
0:46:45 > 0:46:47'Flipping the direction of the stairs
0:46:47 > 0:46:50'has delivered more space upstairs.
0:46:50 > 0:46:53'All the rooms are new. Also, Mum and Dad's bedroom
0:46:53 > 0:46:56'is soundproofed so Gary can get some uninterrupted kip
0:46:56 > 0:46:59'during the day when he's been working nights.
0:46:59 > 0:47:01'We've also created a sewing room for Liz
0:47:01 > 0:47:05'to enjoy some of that downtime, as Scott needs to rely on her less.
0:47:05 > 0:47:07'It's her little treat.
0:47:09 > 0:47:12'There's been a complete garden makeover,
0:47:12 > 0:47:15'and this all-weather path makes it fully accessible to Scott
0:47:15 > 0:47:19'for the first time in years. So he can get down to his new gym,
0:47:19 > 0:47:22'where he can train as many times as he wants a day,
0:47:22 > 0:47:25'without Liz having to ferry him around.
0:47:26 > 0:47:30'It's wonderful, and it's time to show the family their new home.
0:47:37 > 0:47:39'Now, this is going to be a lot for Scott to take in.
0:47:39 > 0:47:41'Since his injuries,
0:47:41 > 0:47:44'he sometimes struggles with absorbing information immediately.
0:47:44 > 0:47:46'But I'm pretty sure that once it all sinks in
0:47:46 > 0:47:49'that he'll love what we've done.'
0:47:49 > 0:47:51Right, that's the last bump you're going to have.
0:47:51 > 0:47:53So have a look up.
0:47:53 > 0:47:54Oh.
0:47:59 > 0:48:00This is your new front door.
0:48:00 > 0:48:02What do you reckon?
0:48:02 > 0:48:04- It's wide enough.- Yes.
0:48:27 > 0:48:28Hob.
0:48:28 > 0:48:30I can reach it.
0:48:30 > 0:48:31To the left, oven door.
0:48:31 > 0:48:34Pull it down. Slide it in.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37Also, what's the other big problem if you cook, what's the danger?
0:48:37 > 0:48:38Legs.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41- Because, if you...- Oh, thank you!
0:48:41 > 0:48:44If you put stuff that's boiling on your legs, you don't notice.
0:48:44 > 0:48:45So you could do yourself damage.
0:48:45 > 0:48:47You want to try on your new apron?
0:48:48 > 0:48:50Over your legs, that bit round your head.
0:48:50 > 0:48:52Just want to demonstrate this for a minute.
0:48:52 > 0:48:54Tuck it in. Go on.
0:48:55 > 0:48:56Now, when you cook,
0:48:56 > 0:48:59even if you spill something on you, no damage.
0:48:59 > 0:49:01- Heat resistant.- Thank you.
0:49:02 > 0:49:05- You're a proper chef, mate, in your own kitchen.- I can cook, yeah!
0:49:05 > 0:49:07That was kind of a big deal, wasn't it?
0:49:08 > 0:49:10Yeah, it is.
0:49:12 > 0:49:13Fridge.
0:49:13 > 0:49:16Yes, cos you're cooking chilli con carne tonight, for your family.
0:49:16 > 0:49:17Yeah, I am, yeah.
0:49:23 > 0:49:24It's a bit surreal at the moment,
0:49:24 > 0:49:27because when I left this house, I could barely get in.
0:49:27 > 0:49:28And now I can get in the house,
0:49:28 > 0:49:30I can get through the doors,
0:49:30 > 0:49:32and I can actually, properly, now, I can cook,
0:49:32 > 0:49:35and I actually get to show my parents that I can do something.
0:49:35 > 0:49:37- Will you have your mates over? - Yeah, I can.
0:49:37 > 0:49:38You can cook for them.
0:49:38 > 0:49:40You can all eat at the table.
0:49:40 > 0:49:43And then, you can show them your new room.
0:49:43 > 0:49:44Yeah.
0:49:58 > 0:49:59Thank you.
0:50:04 > 0:50:07- I don't have to worry about getting stuck in the door.- No.
0:50:07 > 0:50:08Or destroying it.
0:50:08 > 0:50:10Mate, there isn't a place in the house
0:50:10 > 0:50:12you need to worry about getting stuck any more.
0:50:12 > 0:50:14- The whole house is yours again. - Thank you.
0:50:14 > 0:50:16From the front kerb of the road, to the bottom of the garden,
0:50:16 > 0:50:18- you can get everywhere.- Thank you.
0:50:22 > 0:50:24- You all right?- Yeah.
0:50:25 > 0:50:27(Yeah, I'm fine.)
0:50:27 > 0:50:30Let me show you some cool stuff. Your... Your tablet, whatever,
0:50:30 > 0:50:32we've linked it up to your lighting system,
0:50:32 > 0:50:34so you can actually turn the lighting off on here,
0:50:34 > 0:50:35so if I press off...
0:50:35 > 0:50:37Everything goes down and disappears.
0:50:37 > 0:50:39If you want to go back on...
0:50:39 > 0:50:40And then...
0:50:40 > 0:50:41you go into relax mode.
0:50:45 > 0:50:47- It's a lot to take in, isn't it? - Yeah, it is.
0:50:47 > 0:50:49And I know that I'm supposed to be giving you time
0:50:49 > 0:50:50to assimilate this quietly.
0:50:50 > 0:50:51Yeah.
0:50:58 > 0:50:59How cool is that?
0:50:59 > 0:51:00It's brilliant!
0:51:00 > 0:51:02I can move it up and down as well.
0:51:02 > 0:51:03Yeah.
0:51:03 > 0:51:06There's also a remote control you can see on the wall there.
0:51:06 > 0:51:08It connects to the remote control over here,
0:51:08 > 0:51:11so you're coming in in the morning, press the button,
0:51:11 > 0:51:13it flashes red until it hits the temperature that you've preset.
0:51:13 > 0:51:16It flashes, it tells you when it's up to speed, and you come in.
0:51:19 > 0:51:21- Is it all right? - Yes, it's all right.
0:51:24 > 0:51:25It's all change upstairs, as well,
0:51:25 > 0:51:29with a few additions requested by Scott for Gary and Liz.
0:51:32 > 0:51:33Oh.
0:51:33 > 0:51:34Wow.
0:51:36 > 0:51:37That's fantastic.
0:51:39 > 0:51:41That's lovely.
0:51:41 > 0:51:42That's fantastic.
0:51:42 > 0:51:44You'll notice that it's very quiet,
0:51:44 > 0:51:46because not only have you got new windows and doors
0:51:46 > 0:51:47throughout the whole house,
0:51:47 > 0:51:50we've also soundproofed the entire room, because you work shifts.

0:54:39 > 0:54:41"Train hard and achieve your dreams."
0:54:42 > 0:54:45So, the message is written backwards for you,

0:55:27 > 0:55:29LAUGHTER
0:55:29 > 0:55:32I didn't realise you'd actually do literally everything.
0:55:32 > 0:55:34I thought you might do, like, the wet room in the bedroom,
0:55:34 > 0:55:36but I never really thought that...
0:55:36 > 0:55:37THIS would happen.
0:55:37 > 0:55:39You're an inspiration, mate.
0:55:39 > 0:55:42And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you.

0:56:05 > 0:56:08that's all I wanted, I didn't really expect...
0:56:08 > 0:56:10all this support and all this stuff to happen, I just...
0:56:10 > 0:56:11didn't expect that.
0:56:11 > 0:56:13All I expected with just to be able to, you know,
0:56:13 > 0:56:16have a little bit more help with day-to-day life. But...
0:56:16 > 0:56:18It's kind of transformed it, to be honest,
0:56:18 > 0:56:20cos I can now do actually do what 18-year-olds,
0:56:20 > 0:56:22or 17, 18-year-olds can take for granted,
0:56:22 > 0:56:24and it's a massive thank you, to be honest.

0:56:49 > 0:56:52Oh... It's been unbelievable.
0:56:54 > 0:56:55You can tell Scott's a true athlete,
0:56:55 > 0:56:57because he's been talking all week about independence,
0:56:57 > 0:57:00and he was emotional about having a kitchen and the bathroom
0:57:00 > 0:57:01and the bedroom,
0:57:01 > 0:57:03but he really went when he saw the gym.
0:57:03 > 0:57:04Isn't that incredible?
0:57:04 > 0:57:06All these years he's wanted his independence,
0:57:06 > 0:57:08but he's got a gym, which means he can work even harder,
0:57:08 > 0:57:11train even harder, and maybe get that gold medal,
0:57:11 > 0:57:13and of course all athletes need a supporting team around them,
0:57:13 > 0:57:15it's just that Scott's got a bigger team than most.
0:57:15 > 0:57:19They're helping him make his dreams come true.
0:57:20 > 0:57:22So, when you think about it,
0:57:22 > 0:57:24what they do's kind of special.
0:57:24 > 0:57:25It's...
0:57:25 > 0:57:27well, worth a gold medal in its own way, isn't it?
