0:00:04 > 0:00:09On DIY SOS, we know the amazing power of the volunteer

0:00:09 > 0:00:13because we've seen that volunteering can change lives.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17You guys have joined hands and caught me.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20We're only able to come to the aid of families across the UK thanks

0:00:20 > 0:00:24to the generosity of all of the people who selflessly give their time.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27- Do you think we can get her a bedroom?- ALL: Yes!

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Some come for a few hours, some stay the whole build.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32All, in my eyes, are heroes.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34It's the best thing I've done. Brilliant.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37Now we're here in Shropshire with an army of fresh volunteers

0:00:37 > 0:00:40ready to lift a family out of the darkness.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42I didn't move to Shropshire to bury my wife.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44I moved to Shropshire to live here.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47This show proves you're never too old to lend a hand,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50even though our volunteers are pushing themselves to the limit...

0:00:52 > 0:00:54- Do I look worried?- Yeah.- Yeah. - THEY LAUGH

0:00:55 > 0:00:58..to transform this nightmare into a dream.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01It's a proper home now.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03We do not know what to say.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Walk tall, because you have saved somebody's life.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09APPLAUSE

0:01:14 > 0:01:16We're celebrating volunteering. And why not?

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Over the years, we've worked with over 20,000 volunteer builders

0:01:20 > 0:01:23and we've got another couple of hundred here.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26We've even got our very own Silver Army.

0:01:26 > 0:01:31This is DIY SOS - The Big Build! CHEERING

0:01:42 > 0:01:44# Home again

0:01:44 > 0:01:45# Home again. #

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Joe Grafton and Jess married in 2007.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52He was a fireman, she became a teacher.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55The young couple soon had a baby girl, Lucy.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00- LAUGHING:- Look at your little face!

0:02:01 > 0:02:03They thought they'd found the home of their dreams

0:02:03 > 0:02:07and moved from London to a cottage in the Shropshire Hills.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Jess absolutely fell in love with it.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12It's very quiet and peaceful and you can hear the birds singing

0:02:12 > 0:02:15and the river going, and it's just beautiful, isn't it?

0:02:15 > 0:02:18So we moved in 2011.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22But with the first winter came a dawning reality.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27A lot of the damp started to show through the walls, condensation

0:02:27 > 0:02:31on the windows, on the inside and through the winter, that froze.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Their problems were compounded by injuries firefighter Joe

0:02:34 > 0:02:37had sustained tackling a blaze.

0:02:37 > 0:02:42A staircase collapsed underneath me and I went down it.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I landed on the bottom step quite badly,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48right across the bottom of my back, and prolapsed a disc.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Yeah, this wasn't part of the script, I'm afraid.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55In February 2014, a collision in his fire engine left Joe's back

0:02:55 > 0:02:58so damaged, he's been unable to work since.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Then, with the house already a burden,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04life's trap door truly fell open.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08Jess came home from the school she taught at complaining of exhaustion.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11She always used to come home like that at the end of the term,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15say, "Oh, I'm absolutely shattered, I'm going to go to bed." All right, OK, not a problem.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17So I didn't think anything of it.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19But she didn't get any better.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24Within days, she was in hospital fighting for her life.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29So they said, "She's got acute leukaemia." OK.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33And then they said, "She's also got a septicaemia infection as well."

0:03:33 > 0:03:35I said, "What are you telling me here?"

0:03:35 > 0:03:37And they said, "Well, you know, she might die."

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Joe couldn't get hold of Jess's family.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45He had to rush home, but time had run out.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48The phone rang and I thought it might be her mum.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50But it wasn't, it was the hospital

0:03:50 > 0:03:53and they said, "You better get back here, quick."

0:03:54 > 0:04:00We got into the intensive care ward and Jess sat up

0:04:00 > 0:04:04and looked at us both, and then laid back down and shut her eyes...

0:04:05 > 0:04:08And that was the last time we saw her conscious.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Just two hours later, Jess died.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19How do you tell a five-year-old, "Your mum's dead"?

0:04:19 > 0:04:22The most difficult thing I've ever had to do.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26I sat her on my knee and I said, "You know Mummy wasn't well?"

0:04:26 > 0:04:29She said, "Yeah." I said, "Well, you know...

0:04:29 > 0:04:31"Mummy's gone to heaven now."

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And then she looked at me and said, "Is she coming back?"

0:04:36 > 0:04:40I said, "No, babes, she's not coming back. She's not coming back."

0:04:41 > 0:04:44And she just burst out crying and...

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Tough. Tough.

0:04:50 > 0:04:55The thing that really, really, really broke me,

0:04:55 > 0:04:57was the fact that they, Jess and Lucy,

0:04:57 > 0:04:59they loved each other so much.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03There's not a day goes by without me thinking,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06"I wish that we could swap places,"

0:05:06 > 0:05:08so that Jess could be with her little girl.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12I mean, it's a difficult thing to handle.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20Jess was buried just across the valley from the home they'd loved so much.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Joe committed to finish the house in her memory.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I didn't move to Shropshire to bury my wife.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30I moved to Shropshire to live here.

0:05:31 > 0:05:36And at the time I thought, "I WILL get this house fixed."

0:05:36 > 0:05:40He and Lucy moved into a caravan so that work could begin.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43It was a lot to ask of Lucy.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44It's small.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49And most of my favourite things aren't here.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54Six months in, things were unravelling badly.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57You know, I'd set some money by, because every time you

0:05:57 > 0:06:01renovate a property, there's always something that's unexpected.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05But these unexpected things just kept cropping up.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08The more he tried, the worse it got.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Flooding threatened to wash the house away.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13He uncovered another waterway under the living room.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17With his money gone fixing that, the house was left uninhabitable.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21And that's when it all started to get bad

0:06:21 > 0:06:23and the caravan started to get smaller and smaller.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It was meant as a temporary solution.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29A year later, the caravan's become their only home.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32The final blow in a tragic trilogy.

0:06:32 > 0:06:38After everything else that's happened - losing my job, losing my wife -

0:06:38 > 0:06:40and now we haven't got a home to go back into.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Now is the first time that I've been really, really scared.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47Without help, Joe and Lucy will be stuck in the cramped caravan indefinitely.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51So that's why we've called for volunteers to step forwards.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54This is a lovely house you live in. SHE LAUGHS

0:06:54 > 0:06:59So what do your friends think about the fact that this is going on? Have you told them? What do they reckon?

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Is it a good thing or do they think we're going to make a mess of the house?- It's a good thing.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05What does it need before you can move in?

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Beds and furniture and carpets and electricity.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12- What's the bit you're most looking forward to when you come back? - My bedroom.- Your bedroom?

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Never mind the rest of it, as long as your bedroom's all right? SHE LAUGHS

0:07:16 > 0:07:19To be fair to you, you've got new windows and doors in the place.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22- Mm-hm.- You've done quite a lot of boarding already.- Yeah, so we got it this far,

0:07:22 > 0:07:27- so we stripped it right back to the stone wall to start again.- Right.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- And then, you know, it was a money sink.- Yeah.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34You know, this was my wife's home as well and she wouldn't have wanted us to move.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37That's all you need to tell us, I understand that. We're in awe of what firemen do for us

0:07:37 > 0:07:40and you spent your time looking after the community.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42- Time for the community to look after you, I think.- Thanks, mate.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44And we need to make it as nice as possible, yes?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Do you want to come outside and meet some of the guys?

0:07:47 > 0:07:48They're nice people! SHE LAUGHS

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Right, standby to witness the power of the volunteer.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58We've got around 100 trades here, all eager to help a good cause.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Together, they're an unstoppable force of nature.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05- Looking forward to it? Yeah?- Do you think we can get her a bedroom?

0:08:05 > 0:08:07ALL: Yeah!

0:08:07 > 0:08:09- You've got to go school now. - It's half-term here.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13- It isn't half-term! - In England it is.- We are in England!

0:08:13 > 0:08:16- We're not in Wales? - We're not on your planet! LAUGHTER

0:08:16 > 0:08:18I thought we was in Wales!

0:08:20 > 0:08:23'Whilst Billy gets his bearings, we need to get the caravan'

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Joe and Lucy have called home off the site.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Three, two, one...

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- See you later! - Bye, Lucy!

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Just one more thing before the main event.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Our guest designer.

0:08:38 > 0:08:39Can you spot the designer?

0:08:39 > 0:08:42There you go. Our designer this week is Gabrielle Blackman.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44She's the only one with the blue helmet. Is that right?

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Who's that at the back there?

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Obviously there are two blue helmets and that could be confusing.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50Basically, one's got a slight beard

0:08:50 > 0:08:53and the other one's only got whiskers.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55- Yeah. - LAUGHTER

0:08:57 > 0:09:00With all Joe's early work, it may look like we've got a head start.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04But there's still a huge amount to do to be able to call this a home

0:09:04 > 0:09:08and something very strange is going on for day one.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10They're plastering!

0:09:10 > 0:09:13It's all happening. I've only been here ten minutes.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16There's 20 plasterers up there going, "What are we doing? What are we doing?"

0:09:16 > 0:09:20It's normally, like, three days into the build before the spreaders turn up.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Isn't it?

0:09:22 > 0:09:25# Spread it like... #

0:09:25 > 0:09:27Look at that! Isn't that a beautiful sight?

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Go on, hit it with a hammer! Go on, hit it!

0:09:31 > 0:09:33One of the interesting things about this,

0:09:33 > 0:09:36if you look at where I'm standing and then look outside,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39can you see how much higher the road is than where we're standing?

0:09:39 > 0:09:42So essentially, you could fill this up with water, it would be a swimming pool.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45It'd be very difficult to make this a homey place

0:09:45 > 0:09:47- and get the lighting and... - This is the trouble.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50This whole build is... The brief is really simple,

0:09:50 > 0:09:53but the house is fighting us. You know, everything is compromised.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57- Yeah.- The kitchen's half underground, the ceilings are too low.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59We've got a six-foot Joe to fit in here.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03It's just... It's a tough house.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07But make no mistake. Gabby is equal to the task,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09making this home warm and dry without destroying

0:10:09 > 0:10:12the features that make it a beautiful cottage.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Let's start in the living room, where a false chimney breast

0:10:15 > 0:10:18will make the most of the wood burner Joe's already installed.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22The central space will be a social dining area.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25In the half-underground kitchen, abundant work surfaces will

0:10:25 > 0:10:31provide a beautiful place for Joe to cook whilst Lucy does her homework.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35Upstairs, Lucy will get the bedroom she so longs for, with the bespoke

0:10:35 > 0:10:39raised bed. An en-suite shower room will be vital for a growing girl.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42We're adding a new wall to create this family bathroom.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45There will be a spare room for the guests

0:10:45 > 0:10:49and Joe will finally have the bedroom he and Jess dreamed of,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53with bifold doors opening on to a spectacular vista.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Everyone's busy. So, what can I bring to the party?

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Well, that's a question I keep on asking myself

0:10:59 > 0:11:00and I still don't have an answer.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03See, that's not necessary, is it?

0:11:03 > 0:11:06With loads going on inside and out, we've got our work cut out.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09The countryside is beautiful, but when it rains,

0:11:09 > 0:11:13it means one thing - mud. Look at it! Huh-hoo!

0:11:17 > 0:11:20This is what it takes to get a DIY SOS out the ground.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22Here's mud in your eye!

0:11:22 > 0:11:24You're never too old to volunteer, you know?

0:11:24 > 0:11:27And to prove it, we've drafted in some retired

0:11:27 > 0:11:29gents from an organisation called Menshed.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31It's a place where they can just hang out together.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35Now they're hanging out with us and have a very important task.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37So, what have we got you doing for us today?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40We're building the Wendy house.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Well, it's a treehouse, but not in a tree.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Let's have a look at it.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48That's not a treehouse, that's a shed on a stick.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- That's a shed lolly! Look at it! - We was going to use that stump,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54but it's a little bit too close to the edge of the river.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58So what we're going to do is build the platform over there,

0:11:58 > 0:12:00until we can see exactly what it looks like,

0:12:00 > 0:12:03and then we'll add the legs and the rest of it.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05We asked you guys to come in because you

0:12:05 > 0:12:08essentially are also a volunteer force, aren't you?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Well, we provide a centre for people to come to,

0:12:10 > 0:12:12so that they're not isolated and lonely,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15and we're dealing with loneliness in older chaps.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18If the Shed wants to go out and do something, we'll do it.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- So there's a pool of skills there. - Yeah, yeah.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24If somebody comes to us, "I want a new garden shed making,"

0:12:24 > 0:12:26or they want a garden seat, for instance,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- we would make it in our shed. - Very excited to have you on board

0:12:29 > 0:12:31and show these youngsters a thing or two.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- Right.- It's going to be organic.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36You'll notice they're smiling.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38That happens a lot when people join in on DIY SOS.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's a volunteering thing.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43The shed will be the icing on the cake of a low-maintenance

0:12:43 > 0:12:48garden with dry-stone walls, a new bridge and unique ornaments.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51I could do with a rod.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53And a little red hat.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Ha-ha! And a little red hat!

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Oh, I'm on fire this morning.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Thou shalt not pass.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07But I'm Billy Goat Gruff. I shall.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Oof!

0:13:09 > 0:13:12I was going for Arthur and Robin Hood, Little John,

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and you suddenly went for Billy Goat Gruff.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16And the troll was underneath.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18- Yeah.- The troll's come up top!

0:13:19 > 0:13:21Boom-boom!

0:13:21 > 0:13:23You got me.

0:13:23 > 0:13:24After all these years.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27YOU got me.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Water is the reason Joe's money ran out, flooding and drainage are still

0:13:30 > 0:13:34huge issues on this property and that's not all we need to deal with.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37We'll be covering the whole culvert up here.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40This whole area will become a parking area.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Joe can get in here, park in here,

0:13:42 > 0:13:44and then we're going to put a bridge over the river.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47- Bridge Over The River Clun. - Yeah, Bridge Over The River Clun!

0:13:47 > 0:13:50- LAUGHTER - And then over here,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53these ladies and gentlemen are looking after the waste water.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56- When we say waste water, what do we mean?- We'll be taking

0:13:56 > 0:13:59the bathroom, the shower, the sink, the washing machine.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02He doesn't want to say poo. That's what it is.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Joe and Lucy relied on a well for all their water.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08When we had the quality tested, it was found wanting.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11So the local water company have come to the rescue.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12They're here to connect Joe's house

0:14:12 > 0:14:16and his neighbour's to the mains for the first time ever.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18And it's a long, long way.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21How long would the process normally be to get the mains,

0:14:21 > 0:14:22300m away, to here?

0:14:22 > 0:14:25Obviously, there's lots of permits to get for road closures

0:14:25 > 0:14:28and we had to get access over the field from the field owner,

0:14:28 > 0:14:30but everyone's really rallied together and given us

0:14:30 > 0:14:32everything we want really quickly.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34We wouldn't normally put that in, but we've done this

0:14:34 > 0:14:38obviously as a special job and just felt like the right thing to do.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41To do it in the time, they've brought a digger.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44And where there's diggers, there's a Jules.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48- That's an amazing bit of kit, isn't it?- It's a purpose-made trencher.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52That thing there just literally trenches a little trench that wide,

0:14:52 > 0:14:54wide enough to feed the pipe in.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00- Look at that!- Yeah.- It's like some kind of dinosaur head! LAUGHTER

0:15:01 > 0:15:04We love working on old houses.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Like Billy, they have character.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09But they constantly throw up new challenges.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11We knew we'd need to finish the wiring,

0:15:11 > 0:15:13the plumbing and the plastering.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17But half the old roof is rotten, so off it comes.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19Yeah, we're taking the roof off.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22So we're going to re-snip, felt and batten these two roofs.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26They said they'll have them stripped, re-felted and battened by tonight.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30All Joe and Lucy want is somewhere warm and dry.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32They couldn't manage it on their own

0:15:32 > 0:15:34and had to abandon the unfinished house.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38Joe's story is so desperate, some of those that started the work

0:15:38 > 0:15:41have chosen to come back and finish the job for free.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45- Did you... Have you just done this? - Yes.- What, since this morning?- Yeah.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Put a new fire in and put a chimney in and put the framework round it?

0:15:48 > 0:15:51- We don't muck about in Shropshire, you see.- Plainly not.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53So this is a wood burner?

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- So you came and fitted this for Joe before?- Yep.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58- And then they were going to finish it...- Yeah?

0:15:58 > 0:16:00- ..but then, now we've come to finish it for him.- Nice.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04There's people that work at the office who knew his wife,

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- so we felt that we should come and do our bit locally. - Very nice of you.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Because it would be very easy just to chase the profit and

0:16:10 > 0:16:13get on with life, rather than come down here and join in and help out.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- Oh, well, that's the plan for tomorrow. - NICK LAUGHS

0:16:16 > 0:16:18- Go and make some money tomorrow! - THEY LAUGH

0:16:18 > 0:16:20See, that's how it works. He's done something great.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23In fact, all the workers here have done something great.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27We've taken a massive step towards turning Joe's dream into a reality.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Come and have a look at how higgledy-piggledy this is though, look.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33Loads of work has been done in here. Loads of stud work all over the place.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Look at this, this is incredible. And here's my favourite bit, right.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39This beam here, one piece of wood. One tree, one tree, one tree...

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Tree takes a bend at the end,

0:16:41 > 0:16:44so they just built it into the wall as it tails off!

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Isn't that fantastic?

0:16:46 > 0:16:48I mean, you won't see that in modern buildings. I just love it.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Really love it.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54But there's a long way to go and things never run smoothly.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56And that's a sweeping statement.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03MUSIC: Goldfinger by John Barry

0:17:03 > 0:17:06We've gone big with the music this morning!

0:17:06 > 0:17:07I'll tell you why in a moment.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Whoo!

0:17:09 > 0:17:11That is amazing, darling.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14I've got to say something.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18And I thought that you would look incredible

0:17:18 > 0:17:20- as our gold-topped designer.- Aw!

0:17:20 > 0:17:22# Goldhelmet!

0:17:22 > 0:17:26# She's the girl with the golden touch! #

0:17:26 > 0:17:29- Do I look like a massive doorknob? - Yeah.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS

0:17:33 > 0:17:34Dance along at home.

0:17:36 > 0:17:37Across the field,

0:17:37 > 0:17:40the waterboard must have broken some sort of record.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42There's the build-up there and this is the water pipe.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46They've taken it all the way down this field, all the way along here,

0:17:46 > 0:17:49and we're going to take it all the way down there.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52See right down at the end, where that guy's standing?

0:17:52 > 0:17:55It's a long way for a drink of water, isn't it?

0:17:55 > 0:17:59On every build, we find people that have very different reasons for joining in.

0:17:59 > 0:18:04Some volunteer because the family story strikes close to home.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07The story is quite personal to me, because when I was...

0:18:07 > 0:18:11My daughter, when she was eight, she lost her mother.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15And I know what it's like to bring, you know...

0:18:15 > 0:18:16I can sympathise with Joe.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20And all my team are compassionate.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22That's why we're all here, you know?

0:18:22 > 0:18:27Hopefully, we'll create a fantastic garden for him and that's the plan.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29These trades are an example to us all.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32What they're doing will transform the lives

0:18:32 > 0:18:34of Joe and his little girl, Lucy.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Oh, she's magnificent.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42She's been magnificent, well, ever since her mum died.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43She is a happy child.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45She's always got a smile on her face,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49she always looks out for other people, she's been my hero.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54That car's meant to be dark red!

0:18:54 > 0:18:56- Oh! - LUCY LAUGHS

0:18:56 > 0:18:57You colour it in.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Lucy was just five when she lost her mum.

0:19:02 > 0:19:03As if things weren't bad enough,

0:19:03 > 0:19:07she's had to face a life stuck in a tiny caravan.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10As the walls closed in, she escaped into the fantastical world

0:19:10 > 0:19:13of a Viking called Hiccup and his pet dragon.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Tell me about all these dragons, then.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19I just watched it at the cinema and I was like,

0:19:19 > 0:19:21"That's going to be my favourite thing!"

0:19:21 > 0:19:23GABRIELLE LAUGHS

0:19:23 > 0:19:27- Do you think you're going to miss living in a caravan?- No.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30It's not very good, because my dad keeps shouting because

0:19:30 > 0:19:33- it's so small.- What was it like in the house when it was empty?

0:19:33 > 0:19:37It wasn't very good and I don't like going in there, because it was so dusty.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41And my bedroom was the coldest and I didn't like my bedroom.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45What about your dad? What do you think your dad's most excited about?

0:19:45 > 0:19:48He'll get a kitchen, because he likes cooking.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51And what would be the best thing about being back in the house?

0:19:51 > 0:19:52My bedroom.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56- Do you think you're going to get friends round for sleep overs and make lots of noise?- Mmm!

0:19:58 > 0:20:00What she doesn't know is, back on site,

0:20:00 > 0:20:03we've already started on that very special bed.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05She's going to love it.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08And why it's so important and so lovely that you guys are doing

0:20:08 > 0:20:11- this, is that this is the first time... This is her space.- Yeah.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14When you think where they were living before was the same size

0:20:14 > 0:20:17as this room and that was for her, her dad, the bathroom, kitchen,

0:20:17 > 0:20:20everything, and this is now going to be her little zone for her mates.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23I mean, she's just going to be over the moon about this.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26It'll look nice when it's all done.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29A little girl's dream is coming true.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32And if that isn't doing something great, I don't know what is.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36These lovely volunteers are determined to build Joe and Lucy

0:20:36 > 0:20:40the future they deserve, in a home that's rooted in a fascinating past.

0:20:42 > 0:20:47- Is that a yew?- That's me!- No, that's a yew.- No, this is me.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49NICK LAUGHS

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Yes. A yew tree that size has got to be very old indeed.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55So the building it's wrapped its roots around must be even older.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57- What is it?- I have no idea.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Do you know what? It's got a seat in it as well.- It's got a seat in it?

0:21:00 > 0:21:02- A stone seat.- What... What are you doing?

0:21:02 > 0:21:06It's an actual loo! It's a his-and-hers loo.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09- Is it really a loo?- Yeah, look.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11One there, one there. There's two loos.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13It's actually what you would call a garderobe.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17It's basically a seat with a drop and it drops into the stream

0:21:17 > 0:21:20running past, and the stream takes away the effluent.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23It's like you would have it on a castle, you'd have it hanging over the side of the moat.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26It's a poop chute. People are trying to have a bit of privacy.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29All a bit embarrassing that, isn't it?

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Oh, there's no loo roll! Knowlesy, throw me some loo roll!

0:21:32 > 0:21:35In your dreams! Inside insulation will help transform

0:21:35 > 0:21:37the house into a warm, modern living space.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41But Gabby is determined to find ways to keep the character of the place.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44- What news...- Well, I want to... - ..Goldmember?

0:21:44 > 0:21:45SHE LAUGHS

0:21:45 > 0:21:47MUSIC: Goldfinger by John Barry

0:21:47 > 0:21:50I want to raise the ceiling in one of the bathrooms.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53Generally, as a unit? We just need to raise the ceiling a little,

0:21:53 > 0:21:55get a bit more effort all round?

0:21:55 > 0:21:57Yes... No, I just want to pop one of the ceilings up there.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Oh, actually raise the ceiling? - It's a brilliant idea.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Will it involve taking the ceiling joists out and putting them back in again?

0:22:03 > 0:22:07Yes. The guys can do it, I just need to check with Mark.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Looks like it might be a bit late for that,

0:22:09 > 0:22:13- so he'd better be happy. - I don't want anyone to be really, really cross,

0:22:13 > 0:22:17but I was having a discussion about wouldn't it look lovely if we took

0:22:17 > 0:22:20the ceiling down and then I went to check with you, but you were busy,

0:22:20 > 0:22:23and then Ed and Gerry started taking the ceiling down anyway.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25So what are you saying then, Gabbers?

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Can we take the ceiling down? And we've already done it.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31I think there are certain reasons why it might not be a good idea.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35Yes, well, one of the reasons that I was thinking about was would we cause roof spread?

0:22:35 > 0:22:38So you've got a tight beam up here, which holds the roofs together.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41The only problem is we might have to fiddle about with the wiring a bit.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44I mean, obviously, I thoroughly checked all of that before crashing in.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46It's a brilliant job. Obviously, if Ed and Gerry was here,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48you would have thought it through properly.

0:22:48 > 0:22:53- You just come up with the design idea...- I've just...- ..and they've done all the practical side of it.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57- Don't try and undermine her. - All right, OK... What sort of thing should I say to her?

0:22:57 > 0:22:59"Well done. Well done. Great idea."

0:22:59 > 0:23:01He can't say those words.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- It's going to make him ill. He's retching slightly.- No go.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07- Can't get it out. Can't get it out. - THEY LAUGH

0:23:07 > 0:23:09- RAPIDLY:- Well done, it's a great idea!

0:23:09 > 0:23:11Come back! Say it properly!

0:23:11 > 0:23:14MUSIC: Rather Be by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne

0:23:14 > 0:23:17The next day brings a fresh challenge.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19Frost. I don't know why this music means frost,

0:23:19 > 0:23:21but it seems to be working all right.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23- Nice day, lads! Isn't it beautiful? - Lovely!

0:23:24 > 0:23:28What's quite good about it is, it's frozen all the mud as well.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32But the stream, the cause of all the flooding that was damaging the house,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34is still flowing, of course.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38This runs for four miles down to the River Clun, which is that way.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40We've done some local research and we've found out that

0:23:40 > 0:23:44the cause of it narrowing here, it pushes the water back up here

0:23:44 > 0:23:46and threatens flooding the house again.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49So we're going to take a third of that tree off and we're going to

0:23:49 > 0:23:51make the river slightly wider at that point

0:23:51 > 0:23:54and we'll have a full flow then, so the river won't be able to back up.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57We don't want to finish all of this and then have a really bad winter

0:23:57 > 0:23:59and flood the house again.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Look at that! No sooner said than done!

0:24:03 > 0:24:05That's the beauty of a site where everyone's a volunteer.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07They are all willing to just muck in.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11Mind you, it takes a bit of getting used to. Just ask the sparks.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16I said to Ben, "We've got to keep going, we've got to keep up with it,

0:24:16 > 0:24:18"because things change, things change."

0:24:18 > 0:24:21And he's relaxed and he's like, "Yeah, OK, OK."

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Yesterday, he said, "Everything is going so fast, isn't it?"

0:24:24 > 0:24:26THEY LAUGH

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Kind of does, yeah. That's the trouble, you turn your back and something's being plastered

0:24:30 > 0:24:32and you go, "Hang on a second! I haven't gone in there yet!"

0:24:32 > 0:24:37The trick is to find a happy balance between speed and saving what made this cottage special.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40- You all right, mate?- So we're making the most of the rafters in here?

0:24:40 > 0:24:43- Yeah, yeah, yeah. We wanted to keep them as a feature.- Right.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46It's a very frustratingly vast room between the beams.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Cor, it's fiddly that, isn't it?

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Now, plasterers don't just plaster. They have to finish off the outside too.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55I'm going to make this look like that. In render.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58And we've got a porch to do round the front. A bit of creative rendering.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01- That's clever. - Well, I haven't done it yet.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- No, but if you can pull it off, mate...- That's right.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05- That's what I was thinking.- Yeah.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07I wasn't doubting you, honest!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10If you want proof that volunteering helps keep a spring in your step,

0:25:10 > 0:25:12look no further than our Silver Shirts -

0:25:12 > 0:25:17they've unleashed their inner beast to crack on with Lucy's treehouse.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21When you consider we have, like, 60, 70, 80 people on site every day,

0:25:21 > 0:25:24they all volunteered, the majority of the materials

0:25:24 > 0:25:26is donated from different companies... Good, isn't it?

0:25:26 > 0:25:28- It's a good thing, yeah.- Yeah.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30- There's a lot of goodwill out there, isn't there?- There is.

0:25:30 > 0:25:31So what are you waiting for?

0:25:31 > 0:25:34Get out there and do something great.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Gary, we're a little bit up against it, aren't we?

0:25:36 > 0:25:38- Just a little bit, yeah. - I said to you earlier,

0:25:38 > 0:25:40"Do you want to get another stonemason in to help you?"

0:25:40 > 0:25:42And you said, "No!"

0:25:42 > 0:25:45You get different people on there, you have different styles of laying.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47We can see that in a wall, you'll see a difference,

0:25:47 > 0:25:48and it just doesn't look right.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51So we just want to try and keep the continuity of our work,

0:25:51 > 0:25:54- and that's it.- So it's like your signature?- Pretty much, yeah.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58Make no mistake, people take real pride in the quality of work

0:25:58 > 0:26:01they do here. Everything has to be perfect.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Because what they're building is a future.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Jess's family fell in love with this area

0:26:06 > 0:26:09when Jess was the same age as Lucy is now.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12Jess's mum and sister are in the next village,

0:26:12 > 0:26:15so I've popped over to see them.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Jess is often on their minds.

0:26:18 > 0:26:24- We came here when Jess was about six and you were eight.- Yeah.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27We came camping a couple of times a year,

0:26:27 > 0:26:31just a couple of miles along the valley here, where they played.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35- So they had a grand time.- Obviously, they fell in love with the area,

0:26:35 > 0:26:37but it was Jess that wanted to live here.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39I think she was the one who chose it.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43She informed Joe that she'd found the house

0:26:43 > 0:26:46and he came up and agreed with her.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49- Which may be why he can't bring himself to move away.- Mm-hm.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Cos I think he sees Jess as being there,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54and it being important for Lucy that she grows up where...

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Yes, that's very strong in his thinking.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58- ..where Mum was.- Yeah.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01And is, really. I mean, she's only across in the churchyard, isn't she?

0:27:01 > 0:27:02Yes.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05It's little things, isn't it?

0:27:05 > 0:27:09You see a car. "Oh, Jessica had one of those."

0:27:10 > 0:27:13You know, just hits you out of the blue.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17Would she have taken some comfort

0:27:17 > 0:27:19knowing that the community was coming together

0:27:19 > 0:27:21to make sure Lucy had somewhere warm, safe, secure

0:27:21 > 0:27:23- and out of that caravan? - Without a doubt.- Yes.

0:27:23 > 0:27:28Where she can just move, can't she? I mean, in the caravan,

0:27:28 > 0:27:32you just sit in one place all the time, don't you? It's so tiny.

0:27:32 > 0:27:37- She's so excited about getting her own room.- Is she?- Yeah.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40Yeah, she is. And to be able to have her friends over.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- It's all of that, isn't it?- Mm.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45It's back to just a proper childhood.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48You know, this is what it should be.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50And Lucy will get that childhood now,

0:27:50 > 0:27:52thanks to everybody who's joined in

0:27:52 > 0:27:55and volunteered their time and materials.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59But why should people work for no money? What do they get out of it?

0:27:59 > 0:28:02You don't need any financial reward for this, it's just the fact

0:28:02 > 0:28:07that when you've done it, you can say, "I've done a good deed today."

0:28:07 > 0:28:10And it's not just what you see here on site - oh, no.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13There's much more to it than that.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16We dry-laid the floor in the local village hall,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19we sanded it and prefinished it, ready to bring it here, finished.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21You just haven't turned up today,

0:28:21 > 0:28:23you've actually been in the background doing it already.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26We have, we have. Just like a lot of other people, to be honest.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28A good group of guys too.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Incredible, isn't it? People do it for people they don't know.

0:28:31 > 0:28:32What a brilliant country we live in.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35Yep, a country where nothing is too much trouble

0:28:35 > 0:28:36and volunteers walk ten-feet tall,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38apart from Mark who's 4'6".

0:28:41 > 0:28:44As we pass the halfway mark, these glorious trades have already

0:28:44 > 0:28:47finished the roof, got the mains water ready,

0:28:47 > 0:28:49painted the outside of the house

0:28:49 > 0:28:51and started fitting the kitchen.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53It's not like a normal site, is it?

0:28:53 > 0:28:58No. Not at all, you don't have, like, 30, 35 tradesmen in one room.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00- They'd fall out, wouldn't they? - Oh, 100%, yeah.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02- And then you'd get free food. - NICK LAUGHS

0:29:02 > 0:29:05- What's not to like?- Yeah. And my wife don't...

0:29:05 > 0:29:08- My wife can't cook anyway, so... - No, no!

0:29:08 > 0:29:11No! What he meant was, erm, cos he's never home,

0:29:11 > 0:29:14she can't cook for you because you're hardly ever home,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16- cos you're working...- No, she can't cook.- She's a great cook.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18No, she ain't.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20There's no helping some people, is there?

0:29:21 > 0:29:24The mood on site is incredible, but outside, I wonder

0:29:24 > 0:29:28if we've bitten off a bit more than we could chew this time.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Look at the size of the garden. It's massive.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33We've got stonework going on,

0:29:33 > 0:29:35flood prevention, we've put in new sewage,

0:29:35 > 0:29:37we've put a new water main in.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Have we actually got to the stage now

0:29:39 > 0:29:41where we're putting flowerbeds in?

0:29:41 > 0:29:43We are making a start ready to put the topsoil.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46This will be a flowerbed more or less right the way up.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Obviously, because of his back, try keep it low-maintenance,

0:29:49 > 0:29:51- easy for him.- How long would you normally come in

0:29:51 > 0:29:53and tackle a job like this in?

0:29:53 > 0:29:56Probably looking at about five or six weeks...

0:29:56 > 0:29:57with all this.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00- And how long have you got?- Ten days.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02- THEY LAUGH - So...

0:30:02 > 0:30:05yeah, bit of a push but, you know, we've got a good team

0:30:05 > 0:30:07of everybody working together, so it's great.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12And this will give them a lift. With the scaffolding down,

0:30:12 > 0:30:15everyone can see the home Joe and Jess dreamt of

0:30:15 > 0:30:18emerging from our chaos.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20A seven-year-old needs space to run around in

0:30:20 > 0:30:22and so the garden's vital,

0:30:22 > 0:30:25which makes the arrival of our bridge over the River Clun

0:30:25 > 0:30:26a real landmark.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29Once this bridge goes in now, then everything then

0:30:29 > 0:30:32can be sort of built around it and then...

0:30:32 > 0:30:34It's the pathway into the garden, isn't it?

0:30:34 > 0:30:35OK.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39MUSIC: Bridge On The River Kwai Theme

0:30:41 > 0:30:43Going to take the bridge out for a quick walk,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45it's been in the van all day. Come on, boy.

0:30:45 > 0:30:46HE WHISTLES

0:30:46 > 0:30:48Come by. Come by.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51- Do you feel like a Royal Engineer? - I do, actually.

0:30:51 > 0:30:54Come on, bridge! Bridgey!

0:30:56 > 0:30:59So we've got to take the bridge onto that pad, are we?

0:30:59 > 0:31:01Watch the timber. Watch the timber.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08- Yeah? Go in!- Go on, Mr P!

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Who's the daddy?

0:31:11 > 0:31:12Did you see that?

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Hey? HE LAUGHS

0:31:14 > 0:31:16Did you see that? Mr P!

0:31:16 > 0:31:18What a digger driver, eh?

0:31:18 > 0:31:20HE LAUGHS

0:31:22 > 0:31:23The beauty of taking part is

0:31:23 > 0:31:26everyone gets to feel good about themselves.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28- Have you enjoyed yourself? - You mightn't believe it,

0:31:28 > 0:31:30but this is as much fun as I've had

0:31:30 > 0:31:32with my clothes on for about 20 years.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34THEY LAUGH

0:31:35 > 0:31:37Brilliant, I didn't really want to know that!

0:31:37 > 0:31:39THEY LAUGH

0:31:39 > 0:31:41It's all passing along nicely, isn't it?

0:31:41 > 0:31:43Where do they all come from? Where do people live?

0:31:43 > 0:31:46There's nowhere to live. Look at it. It's like, it's hills and trees.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48Do you think they live in burrows and stuff round here?

0:31:48 > 0:31:51Some of them are travelling, two-and-a-quarter hours.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53Some of them have put themselves up in bed-and-breakfasts

0:31:53 > 0:31:56to stay here to help us. It's amazing, isn't it?

0:31:56 > 0:31:58- It is amazing. - Ain't that incredible?

0:31:59 > 0:32:02And most of the volunteers on site have never even met Joe.

0:32:02 > 0:32:05But some are neighbours from the village, like CJ.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07How tough has it been for him over the last couple of years?

0:32:07 > 0:32:12Well, you imagine in a caravan, you know, especially the cold, you know.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14It's a real confined space.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Yeah. It's not like he hasn't tried it with the house.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20- He's been really working. - He's tried, yeah, he really tried.

0:32:20 > 0:32:25And he's done his best, fair play to him. He's done well.

0:32:25 > 0:32:27And he's done well with young Lucy as well.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32CJ and his wife Annie live just down the lane.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34They've opened their home to Joe and Lucy

0:32:34 > 0:32:36as a temporary escape from the cramped caravan.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39In return, they found a new friend.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45He comes here a hell of a lot! Yeah.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48Yeah, he's here at least four times a week.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52He socialises with us and Lucy comes here all the time, really.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55She plays with my little grandson and they're really, really close.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58Whenever you talk about them, you look at the end of the table.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01Yeah, cos that's where he always sits. That's Joe's chair.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03Do you think being stuck in a caravan

0:33:03 > 0:33:06- has made the grieving go on longer? - Yeah.

0:33:06 > 0:33:10I don't think he's been able to grieve properly, really, truthfully.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12I can't really tell you how important

0:33:12 > 0:33:16it is for them, as a family, to be able to move on,

0:33:16 > 0:33:20because they've been stuck in such a small space

0:33:20 > 0:33:21for such a long, long time.

0:33:21 > 0:33:25It's not easy to sit for an hour, never mind days and days and days.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28So, you see this not just as a house, but actually a new beginning?

0:33:28 > 0:33:31Definitely. He's such a lovable character himself. You know.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33- He's just... Makes me... - SHE SOBS

0:33:33 > 0:33:38He's just so lovely. He is such a lovely person.

0:33:38 > 0:33:42And I feel desperately, desperately sorry for them both.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45I'm sorry.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49Fantastic, though, that you and your husband opened your house to them.

0:33:49 > 0:33:51We just love their company.

0:33:51 > 0:33:55To see them be able to fly again would just be wonderful.

0:34:00 > 0:34:01With the days running out,

0:34:01 > 0:34:03we're going to need a lot of positive energy.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05- How are we looking? - We've got a lot to do today.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07We've got a lot to do tomorrow as well.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09Yeah, but we're going to pull it in. Not a problem.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12- Do I look worried? - Yeah.- Yeah.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16Good news! Jules has brought reinforcements,

0:34:16 > 0:34:19although they're even smaller than Mark.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22- They're not related to you, are they?- They're my daughters.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25Oh, my diddly goodness! Hiya, girls!

0:34:26 > 0:34:30It's the Perryman family. Let's go sort the job out now.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33This is, in fact, a crucial stage.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36Outside, we still have the shed to finish, walls to build,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39beds to plant and the ground to prepare for turfing.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43All that will only happen if we don't waste time dithering.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47- What's going on?- We've had no problems in there whatsoever.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49We've come to paint this fence,

0:34:49 > 0:34:51and now they're not sure on the colour scheme.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Get on with it, make a decision!

0:34:53 > 0:34:55- Shush!- Stop poncing about. - Just ignore him.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57We're thinking, Team Decorating. Just don't look at him.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00Just paint it! I don't care whether it's the dark one on the left,

0:35:00 > 0:35:02or the light one on the right. Who cares?

0:35:02 > 0:35:04I care. And this is just...

0:35:04 > 0:35:07How long have we been talking here? Two minutes! Just be quiet.

0:35:07 > 0:35:09Here she comes, look at her.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11- I think that's a decision. - 50-50.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13What? Halfway between the two colours?

0:35:13 > 0:35:16- Doesn't matter!- What do you mean? It's a whole wall.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18- Yes.- It's really important. I don't know why

0:35:18 > 0:35:20everyone's shouting at me through mouthfuls of sausage roll,

0:35:20 > 0:35:23through the undergrowth, when I'm just making a simple decision.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26MUMBLES: No idea what she's talking about!

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Moving swiftly on to another important wall.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32After 30 years, Chris has finally mastered the art

0:35:32 > 0:35:33of being a rubbish plasterer.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38When we were laying this on, all of us were in tears laughing,

0:35:38 > 0:35:41cos it's just not how you render houses.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43You can't learn this. It's a gift!

0:35:44 > 0:35:46You can't learn it cos it's rubbish!

0:35:46 > 0:35:50But it's the right rubbish, it's character and that's what we're all about here.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53In the bathroom, Gabby's vaulted ceiling looks fantastic.

0:35:53 > 0:35:54But it means loads more tiling.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57I could see it, when we met, you had a look of fear in your eyes.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59I've still got that fear.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01It's going to look so stunning when it's finished.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03The good news is the bath has arrived.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06The bad news is, it's a bit big.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10We can't get the bath up the stairs.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12Right, lads, pay attention a sec.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15I want you to do this properly. I hope there's no cowboys on the job.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21Up, up, up, pull it up, pull it up. Pull it over.

0:36:23 > 0:36:27It's such a small house, Gabby's adding storage wherever she can.

0:36:27 > 0:36:28Argh!

0:36:30 > 0:36:32He can't get his legs out of there.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34There we go. How to screw it together from the back.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36- There's another two lads in there! - LAUGHTER

0:36:36 > 0:36:39Now, you'll notice there's a lovely kitchen going in,

0:36:39 > 0:36:41but we don't mention the trade name.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44So, why would people want to volunteer and join in?

0:36:44 > 0:36:47One of the guys at the factory, he used to be a retained firefighter.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49And, so, you know, gave him the story as well,

0:36:49 > 0:36:50told him all about it.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52I said to him, "We've got to be part of this."

0:36:52 > 0:36:55It's local. It's seeing everybody all together.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58- It's fantastic.- Kind of corny. - Yeah, fantastic.

0:36:58 > 0:37:01Lovely, thank you very much, beautiful, really beautiful.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04Most of our volunteers are specialists with specialist skills.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06But you don't have to have skills to join in.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08Some of the people from Jess's school have come along.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11It's their way of showing how much Jess meant to them.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15You've been inside, what do you think of the quality?

0:37:15 > 0:37:16Oh, it's absolutely beautiful.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19I know Jess will be looking down and be absolutely delighted.

0:37:19 > 0:37:21It's cracking, it really is.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23Of all the people helping here,

0:37:23 > 0:37:25you are the people who actually knew Jessica?

0:37:25 > 0:37:29Yeah. We have memories of her dancing to a film that we made.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32There she was dancing up and down the corridor.

0:37:32 > 0:37:33It is kind of nice, the idea.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35She obviously had a dream when she came here that

0:37:35 > 0:37:38this would be the place to be together. Plainly that can happen.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41But I think we've got a good chance of them being able to live

0:37:41 > 0:37:44- a really comfortable, positive life in this environment.- I know.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47And she had a desire to live here and renovate the house.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49And it's wonderful that you have carried on her dream

0:37:49 > 0:37:51and finished it off for Lucy and Joe.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53Well, we're the catalyst.

0:37:53 > 0:37:57The community of traders and suppliers does the rest.

0:37:57 > 0:37:5948 hours to go, so I'm off to meet Joe

0:37:59 > 0:38:03in the storage shed that holds all his worldly possessions.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05Since Jess's death, he and Lucy

0:38:05 > 0:38:07have been left to rely on each other.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Amazing, really, that it's your job as a father, to look after her,

0:38:12 > 0:38:15and yet, here's you getting strength from your seven-year-old.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18She has been my hero.

0:38:18 > 0:38:23October last year, I just hit a brick wall, hit a brick wall.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26I can remember sitting there, I was like that, just shaking,

0:38:26 > 0:38:28crying, shaking.

0:38:28 > 0:38:30It's difficult to deal with your own demons

0:38:30 > 0:38:32- because you have Lucy to look after.- Yeah, absolutely.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35And that is the only reason I'm still here.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41You look like you're a great little unit now, the two of you.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44Yeah, you know, we're all right now.

0:38:44 > 0:38:46And the house will help.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50I cannot tell you how much that will help us.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52This is exactly what Jess would have wanted.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56Before anything happened, we had this conversation.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58If anything happened to one of us,

0:38:58 > 0:39:01we'd want the other one to stay there and make a life.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03That's why they're doing it.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06And how fantastic is it to do something for someone

0:39:06 > 0:39:08and know you've made a difference?

0:39:08 > 0:39:10They're going to make a massive difference,

0:39:10 > 0:39:12they're going to make a massive difference.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18You see, that's what happens when you join in and do something great.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20You make a difference.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24Back on site, tomorrow's the last day.

0:39:24 > 0:39:28The building work is finishing and fluffy stuff is flooding the house.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31But we still have loads to do outside

0:39:31 > 0:39:33and the forecast is horrendous.

0:39:33 > 0:39:37If it rains tomorrow, it's going to be a massive problem.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40The worst bit is going to be levelling the topsoil out

0:39:40 > 0:39:43for the turf. That's going to be the horrible bit.

0:39:43 > 0:39:45The thing is, you've just got to think positive

0:39:45 > 0:39:48and think, "It's not going to rain tomorrow,"

0:39:48 > 0:39:54and it's not going to be an issue, and I'm sure it won't.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58It is not going to rain tomorrow.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00THUNDER RUMBLES

0:40:02 > 0:40:04Don't look at me, I can't control the weather.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06It was just merely putting it in a positive form

0:40:06 > 0:40:10just to make everybody feel happy but, you know, hey-ho!

0:40:11 > 0:40:12LAUGHTER

0:40:12 > 0:40:13Raring to go.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17This rain is not what we need on the final day!

0:40:17 > 0:40:18Are we going to be able to do this,

0:40:18 > 0:40:20or is it just too wet and muddy and horrible?

0:40:20 > 0:40:22We can't come back next week, so it's a case of

0:40:22 > 0:40:24having to put up with it and do the best we can,

0:40:24 > 0:40:27- that's what we're going to do. - That's the spirit, isn't it?

0:40:27 > 0:40:30He's exactly right. There are so many reasons to join in.

0:40:30 > 0:40:34Little Dave is here because he wants to give something back.

0:40:34 > 0:40:37So, when did you get into this gardening landscape business?

0:40:37 > 0:40:39Er, about eight days ago!

0:40:39 > 0:40:41LAUGHTER

0:40:41 > 0:40:44- This is not your bread and butter, then?- No, no.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47I plan weddings.

0:40:47 > 0:40:48I do all the fluffy stuff.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- So, eight days ago, you took up a bit of landscaping?- I did, yes.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53Why on Earth are you here?

0:40:53 > 0:40:56Um, well, mainly it was a personal thing with me,

0:40:56 > 0:40:59because I had a nervous breakdown nine years ago

0:40:59 > 0:41:03and I was helped out by The Prince's Trust to start my own business.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05And it kind of just took off

0:41:05 > 0:41:08and I felt like I needed to give something back.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11Just a bit of a personal challenge for me.

0:41:11 > 0:41:14I don't like normally being around people, I kind of hide myself away,

0:41:14 > 0:41:17try and stay in the background.

0:41:17 > 0:41:18You don't like being around people!

0:41:18 > 0:41:21You've got 93 people every day on site.

0:41:21 > 0:41:23It's the best thing I've done, brilliant.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Absolutely loved every minute of it.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27You should get out and join us more often. You're a lovely man.

0:41:30 > 0:41:31# Magic! #

0:41:31 > 0:41:34Inside, it's situation normal. Bad jokes from Billy.

0:41:34 > 0:41:38See this? They're not my real ladders, they are my step ladders!

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Step ladders!

0:41:41 > 0:41:43HE LAUGHS AND COUGHS

0:41:43 > 0:41:45And beautiful fixtures and fittings,

0:41:45 > 0:41:47with vital details missing.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49- So, I'm going to try and find some handles now.- Yeah, if you could.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51And I can get them on.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53I'm just going to empty about four containers.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55I'll be back in three hours.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58We don't have three hours!

0:41:58 > 0:42:03But we do have a treehouse, thanks to our silver-shirted volunteers.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05Time for a grand unveiling.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08Can I take our seven million people inside? Thank you very much.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10NICK IMITATES A FANFARE

0:42:10 > 0:42:12It's kind of cute, isn't it?

0:42:12 > 0:42:14And then you look out across the fields there.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16Beautiful view.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18- Sit out on the balcony. - Gin and tonics.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21It's a child's Wendy house, what do you mean gin and tonics?!

0:42:21 > 0:42:23THEY LAUGH

0:42:23 > 0:42:27Crossing the finish line is now up to the team laying the turf.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31And Gabby who needs to put her finishing touches to the inside.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35- You could hang some washing on it, an inside line.- Yeah.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39I could put Knowlesy's massive pants hanging on that overnight.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41That's a bit harsh. I'm actually wearing

0:42:41 > 0:42:45- a quite interesting smaller brief these days.- Ouch!

0:42:45 > 0:42:48- Let me show you.- Oh, no, he's going to get his budgie-smugglers out!

0:42:48 > 0:42:50No, go! No! Oh, no!

0:42:50 > 0:42:52That's just the thermals, hang on.

0:42:52 > 0:42:53No!

0:42:53 > 0:42:55LAUGHTER

0:42:55 > 0:42:58I think we should probably leave it there, don't you?

0:43:00 > 0:43:03Nine days ago, this house was a shell

0:43:03 > 0:43:06lacking even the basic amenities.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08Joe and Lucy were trapped in a tiny caravan -

0:43:08 > 0:43:10no place for anyone,

0:43:10 > 0:43:13let alone a seven-year-old who's lost her mum.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17After everything else that's happened - losing my job,

0:43:17 > 0:43:21losing my wife, and now we haven't got a home to go back into.

0:43:21 > 0:43:24It was the first time I've been really, really scared.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29Now, thanks to the power of the volunteer,

0:43:29 > 0:43:33hundreds of helpers have turned the dream of Joe and Jess

0:43:33 > 0:43:35into a reality.

0:43:35 > 0:43:37The cramped caravan is no longer needed.

0:43:37 > 0:43:42The cold, drab building is now a bright, beautiful country cottage

0:43:42 > 0:43:45that is the jewel of the valley.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47Inside, the shell of a living room

0:43:47 > 0:43:49has become the heart of the cottage.

0:43:49 > 0:43:54Local art adorns the walls and Joe's burner adds a warm glow.

0:43:54 > 0:43:58The central space is the dining area complete with original beams,

0:43:58 > 0:44:02handmade oak table and ingenious storage.

0:44:02 > 0:44:04The kitchen, once the darkest room in the house,

0:44:04 > 0:44:07is a stunning blast of bright, gleaming surfaces

0:44:07 > 0:44:10with raised appliances to help Joe's back,

0:44:10 > 0:44:12and its on mains water.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15On the staircase, we've retained the cottage heritage

0:44:15 > 0:44:17with this slice of stone wall.

0:44:17 > 0:44:21Lucy's room is no longer cold and dusty.

0:44:21 > 0:44:22It's now fit for a princess.

0:44:22 > 0:44:24She's even got the raised bed she wanted,

0:44:24 > 0:44:27complete with truckle bed for friends to stay.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30There's not one but two bathrooms.

0:44:30 > 0:44:32And, thanks to Gabby, their vaulted ceilings

0:44:32 > 0:44:36make the most of those cottage beams.

0:44:36 > 0:44:39There's a spare room for guests.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42And Joe gets the bedroom he and Jess dreamt of,

0:44:42 > 0:44:45with bifold doors that can finally be flung open,

0:44:45 > 0:44:48thanks to this personalised Juliet balcony.

0:44:48 > 0:44:52And the view of the garden is stunning.

0:44:52 > 0:44:56It's been transformed with new lawns, subtly-painted fencing,

0:44:56 > 0:45:01low-maintenance beds, and stunning dry-stone walls throughout.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04We've added hard standing over the stream,

0:45:04 > 0:45:06reduced the risk of flooding and built a new bridge.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08And, as if all that wasn't enough,

0:45:08 > 0:45:13our silver-shirted volunteers have built Lucy her very own treehouse.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16The work is done. Now, let's see if they like it.

0:45:22 > 0:45:23You spent a long time in that caravan

0:45:23 > 0:45:25- looking at the house, didn't you? - Yeah, I did.

0:45:25 > 0:45:28- The house you really wanted to get into, but couldn't.- Yeah.

0:45:28 > 0:45:32I really hope, having got to know you and Lucy, that this

0:45:32 > 0:45:35will be the start of something new for you, and a new beginning.

0:45:35 > 0:45:39If you're ready, open your eyes.

0:45:41 > 0:45:46- Oh, my God. - Isn't it the most beautiful house?

0:45:46 > 0:45:48That is unbelievable.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52When Jess came and chose this place here,

0:45:52 > 0:45:54do you think that maybe she had in her mind's eye

0:45:54 > 0:45:57- that it could be this pretty little cottage?- Yeah, oh, yeah.

0:45:57 > 0:46:01Yeah. It's a proper home now, isn't it? It's a proper home now.

0:46:01 > 0:46:03Come on, let's go inside.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16Wow.

0:46:16 > 0:46:17It's warm.

0:46:17 > 0:46:19NICK LAUGHS

0:46:19 > 0:46:22- Too warm, in fact. But we thought that was OK.- That's fine.

0:46:22 > 0:46:25This place is insulated beyond belief

0:46:25 > 0:46:27and will stay warm.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30It is stunning. It restores your faith in humanity.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33- Do you want to see some more? - Brilliant.

0:46:37 > 0:46:39Oh!

0:46:40 > 0:46:42Wow!

0:46:42 > 0:46:44These are beautiful, aren't they?

0:46:44 > 0:46:47But it's a beautiful old building with loads of character.

0:46:47 > 0:46:53Yeah, this is such a weight off my shoulders, you wouldn't believe.

0:46:53 > 0:46:54You would not believe.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58You sit in a caravan and you can see it everyday, and you think,

0:46:58 > 0:47:01"How on Earth do I get back in here?"

0:47:03 > 0:47:04And you've done this.

0:47:04 > 0:47:08- Do you want to see the kitchen? - Yeah, I'd love to see the kitchen.

0:47:08 > 0:47:09Let's go through.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19Wow!

0:47:21 > 0:47:23This is just beautiful.

0:47:23 > 0:47:24A couple of key things.

0:47:24 > 0:47:26We've raised the oven up, obviously, because of your back.

0:47:26 > 0:47:28- Yeah.- And then, what we've also done,

0:47:28 > 0:47:31you've got to go backwards and forwards to the fridge and freezer,

0:47:31 > 0:47:35we've raised those up as well, so if you open those doors...

0:47:35 > 0:47:36Ha.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39We want to make sure you don't have to bend down all the time

0:47:39 > 0:47:40to pick stuff up.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43And, coming across to the central island, that's your work space.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45Also, the water has changed.

0:47:45 > 0:47:48Our friends at the water authority came in during the week

0:47:48 > 0:47:50and laid a 300-metre pipeline from the village,

0:47:50 > 0:47:52and you are now connected up.

0:47:52 > 0:47:54- You've put mains water in? - Yeah. Trouble was,

0:47:54 > 0:47:57it was tens of thousands of pounds, we couldn't afford to do it,

0:47:57 > 0:48:00- but they just came and did it anyway.- That is cool.

0:48:02 > 0:48:04Why is the kitchen such a big deal?

0:48:04 > 0:48:06Well, it's the hub of the home, isn't it?

0:48:06 > 0:48:09- And it should be, this is where people gather in a house.- Yeah.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13We never had a kitchen we could do that before and now we can.

0:48:15 > 0:48:16Upstairs?

0:48:19 > 0:48:24- Lucy's room.- Oh, my goodness me!

0:48:24 > 0:48:27This is absolutely beautiful.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29She is going to love that.

0:48:29 > 0:48:31She wanted a raised bed.

0:48:31 > 0:48:34We told the chippies and they came up with this.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36It is beautiful.

0:48:37 > 0:48:39Homework space, obviously.

0:48:39 > 0:48:43Particularly important picture on the wall.

0:48:43 > 0:48:45When you lost Jess,

0:48:45 > 0:48:49- she took refuge in a particular story.- Yeah, she did.

0:48:49 > 0:48:53- Was it How To Train Your Dragon? - How To Train Your Dragon, yeah.

0:48:53 > 0:48:58So, we contacted the lady who wrote and drew How To Train Your Dragon.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00She drew that and sent it over.

0:49:02 > 0:49:03JOE CRIES SOFTLY

0:49:12 > 0:49:15Thank you. Thank you.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30Thank you for what you have done here.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36It's beautiful.

0:49:36 > 0:49:37We kind of thought that was important,

0:49:37 > 0:49:40because the lady who wrote that book helped her through it all.

0:49:40 > 0:49:42Yeah.

0:49:42 > 0:49:43It's so sweet.

0:49:47 > 0:49:50- Good enough bedroom for her? - Yeah, yeah.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04- Beautiful.- Isn't it?

0:50:05 > 0:50:08Really beautiful beam work, so, why lose it?

0:50:16 > 0:50:19- Look at this!- This is special.

0:50:19 > 0:50:22Ah, it's just unbelievable.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26So, we've got two more, one of which we've done as a spare room,

0:51:14 > 0:51:16She would love it so much.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21I know, if she's looking down right now...

0:52:00 > 0:52:02JOE SIGHS

0:52:02 > 0:52:04It's kind of like a treehouse/Wendy house.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07It's got little solar panels in it as well, so there's little lights,

0:52:07 > 0:52:11twinkly lights, so she can light it up. It's an amazing little spot.
