0:00:02 > 0:00:04I was a very, very independent teenager.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06I'd just always be doing something.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10I wasn't the sort of person that would be just at home doing nothing.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13But two years ago everything changed.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17We never knew that Chloe's illness
0:00:17 > 0:00:20was going to take this sort of turn for the worse.
0:00:20 > 0:00:24And today, this 20-year-old's home is her prison.
0:00:24 > 0:00:30It's like these four walls that I'm stuck in and I can't get out.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32And I listen to everyone else in the other room,
0:00:32 > 0:00:34like watching TV together.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36It's very difficult.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38This is a family in crisis.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42Illness and uncertainty are in danger of tearing them apart.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45It's that desperate that Chloe said,
0:00:45 > 0:00:47"I think you should put me in a care home."
0:00:50 > 0:00:53And that shatters my whole world.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56We're here to stop that happening,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58helped by hordes of local heroes.
0:01:00 > 0:01:01It pulls on my heartstrings
0:01:01 > 0:01:04and I just want to give something back to the community.
0:01:04 > 0:01:05It's an epic task...
0:01:05 > 0:01:07That'll be heavy.
0:01:07 > 0:01:08..that won't be easy...
0:01:10 > 0:01:13It's an on-site mistake, it happens.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15..but it'll be worth every inch of effort.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19As usual we have just nine days,
0:01:19 > 0:01:22we've already found an army and we have him and we have him
0:01:22 > 0:01:24and we have him and we have that.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27And our designer this week is the inimitable Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Hello. This is DIY SOS... - No, I say that.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!
0:01:40 > 0:01:42This is Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire,
0:01:42 > 0:01:46home to 20-year-old Chloe who's doing her best to cope with
0:01:46 > 0:01:49a chronic illness in the house she shares with her mum Susie,
0:01:49 > 0:01:51stepdad Phil and stepbrother Josh.
0:01:52 > 0:01:57When I have to explain my condition, first of all I say to people,
0:01:57 > 0:02:00"Don't expect a quick answer, have you got a while?"
0:02:00 > 0:02:03And then...I start explaining.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Despite health problems since childhood,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09Chloe was well enough to enjoy much of her teenage life.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13But, at 18, her condition suddenly worsened
0:02:13 > 0:02:15and the impact was dramatic.
0:02:17 > 0:02:18Until we found out what was wrong,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21there was no way I could have left that hospital,
0:02:21 > 0:02:26so it meant pretty much the whole year just there.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29And that sort of thing gets very lonely.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34After months of tests, doctors diagnosed a mastocytosis -
0:02:34 > 0:02:38a rare genetic disorder that will require lifelong intervention.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41So I have a problem with my mast cells
0:02:41 > 0:02:44and they're a type of cell in your blood.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48And they deal with all the allergic reactions.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52They basically make me have allergic reaction symptoms
0:02:52 > 0:02:54when I'm not allergic to something.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57My throat closes, I get an ulcerated mouth,
0:02:57 > 0:03:01my skin is constantly like blistering and bubbling.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05Chloe needs constant access to oxygen,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07and has to be fed through a tube in her chest.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10As her condition also affects her heart,
0:03:10 > 0:03:14she's prone to seizures that stop her breathing and every day,
0:03:14 > 0:03:16her joints dislocate.
0:03:16 > 0:03:21She's in excruciating pain all the time,
0:03:21 > 0:03:25because of that, because of the pain receptors, they've actually...
0:03:25 > 0:03:30her brain's pain receptors have shut down the use of her legs.
0:03:30 > 0:03:33The illness has affected the whole family,
0:03:33 > 0:03:34mum Susie has given up her job
0:03:34 > 0:03:37managing the family's car repair business
0:03:37 > 0:03:40to devote herself to being Chloe's round-the-clock carer.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44We're getting about,
0:03:44 > 0:03:48well, between two and four hours of sleep a night.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52Chloe does rely on her mum a lot.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54Chloe does feel guilty about it
0:03:54 > 0:03:59because she feels that everybody's life revolves around her, um...
0:03:59 > 0:04:04And the more frustration... Well, the more she thinks about it,
0:04:04 > 0:04:06the more frustrated she gets with it.
0:04:06 > 0:04:07And it's a vicious circle.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09- Yeah.- It is a vicious circle.
0:04:09 > 0:04:15Luckily, Chloe also has 12-year-old stepbrother Josh to lend a hand.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Chloe's amazing, she puts up with a lot of pain.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21I like to help her out cos she's a great sister.
0:04:21 > 0:04:25Joshua is amazing, she's turned into my little big brother.
0:04:25 > 0:04:27If I start having a seizure,
0:04:27 > 0:04:30Josh will just run down the stairs as quick as he can to make sure that
0:04:30 > 0:04:32there's nothing I can hurt myself on,
0:04:32 > 0:04:35he's turned from a little boy into someone
0:04:35 > 0:04:40that knows he's got responsibility and he likes that, I think,
0:04:40 > 0:04:41cos he can be a part of helping.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44But despite this close-knit family strength,
0:04:44 > 0:04:48their house is making everyday life incredibly difficult.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51Chloe's wheelchair is too wide to get into most of the rooms
0:04:51 > 0:04:54so she's confined to the rear lounge,
0:04:54 > 0:04:58a much happier space when she was younger.
0:04:58 > 0:05:03I made a big papier-mache elephant in here, we've painted footballs,
0:05:03 > 0:05:08made bunting, played The Game Of Life on the table.
0:05:08 > 0:05:10And then it just all had to go.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14For the last 18 months, this has been Chloe's...
0:05:14 > 0:05:16- Everything room I call it. - ..everything room.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19It's not my bedroom and I don't ever call it bedroom.
0:05:19 > 0:05:20I just call it my cell,
0:05:20 > 0:05:24because it's like these four walls that I'm stuck in
0:05:24 > 0:05:25and I can't get out.
0:05:25 > 0:05:30With no room for Chloe to call her own and isolated from everyone else,
0:05:30 > 0:05:33this cramped home is physically forcing the family apart.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39Chloe spoke to me a few weeks ago in the middle of the night
0:05:39 > 0:05:42and she said, "I think you should put me in a care home..."
0:05:48 > 0:05:51She said, "..because I've taken over your lives,
0:05:51 > 0:05:52"I've taken over the house."
0:05:58 > 0:06:01And as a mum, I couldn't find an answer.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06I couldn't find an answer to keep us together as a family.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09And that shatters my whole world.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16If this young woman is to have the independence she so badly needs,
0:06:16 > 0:06:18her home simply has to change.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23I just... I just want some space to call my own.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27And having my own bedroom that's not the lounge,
0:06:27 > 0:06:31so my family have some space too.
0:06:31 > 0:06:32I want space for them as well.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35And that's where we come in.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Particularly upsetting that Chloe can't join us this morning.
0:06:38 > 0:06:39- Yep.- So what's happened over the weekend?
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Chloe had a particularly bad seizure.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44She was taken to hospital,
0:06:44 > 0:06:49and then unfortunately on Friday morning she had a cardiac arrest.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51But she's OK.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53Is that something that happened before?
0:06:53 > 0:06:54Not as bad as this.
0:06:54 > 0:06:55So this is as bad as it's been?
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Yep. What do you need... what do you need from this house?
0:06:58 > 0:07:00- Just some...just some space. All we ask...- Just some space.- Yep.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02If you were able to adapt the house
0:07:02 > 0:07:04so that she was mobile around the house,
0:07:04 > 0:07:06then it would bring the whole family together.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08We're going to have to break your house to do it.
0:07:08 > 0:07:09You put a smile on his face.
0:07:11 > 0:07:12I think it's the break bit.
0:07:12 > 0:07:13It's the breaking bit.
0:07:13 > 0:07:14He'll enjoy that bit.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18Morning, everybody.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21I'd just like to say thank you ever so much for everybody.
0:07:21 > 0:07:22It means an awful lot,
0:07:22 > 0:07:25Chloe is really sorry she can't be here today.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29Chloe is restricted to an electric wheelchair,
0:07:29 > 0:07:31so she's just had to live in the front room.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35And it's as Chloe put it, it's her cell.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38There's not enough room in there for us all to go in,
0:07:38 > 0:07:39and she can't get in with us
0:07:39 > 0:07:43so we sort of shout through a wall so we're very segregated.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45- Just need to be a family again. - Yeah.- Yeah.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47- Are we up for doing that? ALL:- Yeah.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51As usual, we have only nine days to get this gigantic job done,
0:07:51 > 0:07:53let the orgy of destruction commence.
0:07:58 > 0:07:59To give Chloe some independence,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02we're building her a self-contained flat.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05We're also going to open up the downstairs
0:08:05 > 0:08:07so she can use the whole space when she wants.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11And we're rewiring the entire house too.
0:08:11 > 0:08:13Thankfully, for everyone's safety, Billy's not on his own.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16He's got ten electricians to "lead".
0:08:16 > 0:08:20To be honest, see, I'm Jurassic sparks, you're the young sparks.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22We'll get it together and we'll do it.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Luckily, there's not much work to be done upstairs.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29We're going to move these walls back here and make the hallway bigger.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32We're changing the bathroom round.
0:08:32 > 0:08:33We're rewiring up here.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36We've ripped all the carpets out. Billy's got sparks everywhere.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38We've got furniture up the stairs
0:08:38 > 0:08:40and we're going to have to redecorate and carpet
0:08:40 > 0:08:42and put a new bathroom in and dress all the rooms.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44So, yeah, we're not doing much up here.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48Yes. And of course we need to get stuck in straightaway
0:08:48 > 0:08:49as there's no time to waste.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52You can't just run into battle. Come up with a plan and stick to it.
0:08:52 > 0:08:54That's what we're doing. I'm getting your pipes,
0:08:54 > 0:08:57you're getting the ripping bar, we'll pull the ceilings down,
0:08:57 > 0:08:59we'll expose the underside of the joists.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02- Let Doug see the rabbit, see what's going on.- Yeah. See.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05Not sure how Chris and Jules speaking Devonian
0:09:05 > 0:09:07will go down in these parts.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09Anyway, to rip this place apart and rebuild it,
0:09:09 > 0:09:13we're going to need a grand plan and for that we need a grand designer.
0:09:13 > 0:09:17Here he comes. Here is he, in the middle of the build,
0:09:17 > 0:09:21everyone's turning around, look, look, by limo, Lawrence.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23By limo. You going with the vampire look again, are we?
0:09:23 > 0:09:26Oh, we are, you know, keep the undesirables at bay.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29Do you have a routine to go through before you get started?
0:09:29 > 0:09:31I do, I need to be entirely lubricated
0:09:31 > 0:09:34- so I can just slide straight through the side.- Lovely, well, let's see.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37Anybody want to volunteer to lubricate Lawrence?
0:09:37 > 0:09:41'No volunteers and no wonder, Lawrence isn't completely human
0:09:41 > 0:09:44'which is good because there's too much design work here
0:09:44 > 0:09:45'for a mere mortal.'
0:09:46 > 0:09:49What's the over-arching theme and what is their emotion...
0:09:49 > 0:09:51- Cornwall. Cornwall. - We're in the Midlands,
0:09:51 > 0:09:53we're in the middle of the Midlands.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55They have spent a lot of time in St Ives,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58I think we should use colour and texture in a way
0:09:58 > 0:10:00that will be modern and exciting.
0:10:00 > 0:10:04Just because it has to be disability friendly,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06it doesn't mean it has to look disability friendly.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08Listen, this is really important to me,
0:10:08 > 0:10:13my mother was severely disabled for most of my life.
0:10:13 > 0:10:18I grew up with it. She was adamant that...
0:10:18 > 0:10:21She used to say, "Stylish first, ramps second."
0:10:21 > 0:10:24For a young person like Chloe, design is incredibly important.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27Chloe wants to have a glamorous life.
0:10:27 > 0:10:29You facilitate the life, I want to make it pretty,
0:10:29 > 0:10:32that's the way it always works. That's why we're such a good team.
0:10:32 > 0:10:35That's why we love you. You come in and you spangle up our ordinary.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38And Lawrence has pulled out all of his spangles
0:10:38 > 0:10:40to not only give Chloe a place of her own
0:10:40 > 0:10:43but also to create a space for the family to be together.
0:10:43 > 0:10:47First up, we need to widen the hall and doorways and make room
0:10:47 > 0:10:51for an open-plan kitchen-diner that's fully accessible for Chloe.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54The front room we're keeping the same,
0:10:54 > 0:10:57but the major magic is happening in what was the back garden -
0:10:57 > 0:11:00a massive extension will provide Chloe with independence
0:11:00 > 0:11:02thanks to her own self-contained apartment,
0:11:02 > 0:11:05complete with bedroom, wet room and sitting room.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10Upstairs, the bathroom and spare room are getting a total revamp
0:11:10 > 0:11:14and Josh's bedroom will become an urban chic chill-out zone.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16Well, that's how Lawrence put it.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18And we'll be turning Susie and Phil's bedroom
0:11:18 > 0:11:20into a well deserved Cornish retreat
0:11:20 > 0:11:23because, well, these guys have had a really tough few years.
0:11:23 > 0:11:28So in effect we're totally transforming 99% of the house,
0:11:28 > 0:11:29except the front room.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33That is sacrosanct and must not be touched.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36Hang on a sec, hang on. Did you not get the memo
0:11:36 > 0:11:38- saying we're not going to do too much to that room?- Yeah, we're not.
0:11:38 > 0:11:42Well, I can see how little you've done to the room already.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44We're not touching that wall.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48We're just taking this wall out and we're moving that wall in.
0:11:48 > 0:11:52And we had to take the ceiling down because the steel's to go in.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54We'll put it all back, you won't know.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56- Really?!- Yeah. No.
0:11:56 > 0:11:58- Yeah, cos this is her favourite room.- Was!
0:11:58 > 0:12:00So we're not touching it.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05We were told that the blinds we're retaining as well
0:12:05 > 0:12:09- so that's why we've left that piece of ceiling there, so.- Right.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13Memo got squished, so now just keeping the blinds in that room.
0:12:13 > 0:12:17That's it, is it? That's all that's left basically.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Yeah, you see, communication has never really been our strong point.
0:12:20 > 0:12:21At least out the back,
0:12:21 > 0:12:23everyone's been working as one on the extension.
0:12:23 > 0:12:24Look at it fly up.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28And this time we are using structural insulated panels
0:12:28 > 0:12:30or Sips for short.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34They're like a board sandwich with a foam filling.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36This is the shape of the building
0:12:36 > 0:12:39which you can see they're already starting to put roof timbers on.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Extraordinary, isn't it, the speed that it goes up?
0:12:42 > 0:12:44So that's incredible, that's two hours.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48But it's not just the building materials
0:12:48 > 0:12:49that are going to provide warmth here,
0:12:49 > 0:12:52there's a lot of love from the local tradesmen helping out.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56So you know the family anyway?
0:12:56 > 0:13:00Yeah, I know Suse, I used to socialise with Suse back in the day.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02I like to think, you know, someone would do it for me
0:13:02 > 0:13:05if my daughter was in the same situation
0:13:05 > 0:13:08so, like I say, I know Suse so it was a no-brainer.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11- What do you get out of it? - You get a sense of community,
0:13:11 > 0:13:14you're helping someone who really needs something.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17And with the level of graft on the site turned up to the max
0:13:17 > 0:13:20we have somehow managed to take a house apart
0:13:20 > 0:13:23and created an entirely new building in the garden.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25Not bad for just one day's work, is it?
0:13:26 > 0:13:27What have you built?
0:13:27 > 0:13:29- It's huge.- I know, it's massive, isn't it?
0:13:29 > 0:13:31My God. It's what you wanted.
0:13:31 > 0:13:32Now this little problem is
0:13:32 > 0:13:35that we've got to get it roofed and ready for tomorrow night.
0:13:36 > 0:13:38Get the whole thing watertight,
0:13:38 > 0:13:39we have got to get the steels in tomorrow.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43You think you've got problems, I can't find a particular shade
0:13:43 > 0:13:45- of dusky pink I need for her bedroom curtains.- Oh, my God.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47That's a crisis.
0:13:47 > 0:13:51Can someone call Ban Ki-moon at the UN and tell him what's going on,
0:13:51 > 0:13:53see if we can get a task force together to help Lawrence?
0:13:53 > 0:13:54Thank you.
0:13:54 > 0:13:56You know, after 16 years,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58this programme still never fails to amaze me.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00All this in just seven hours.
0:14:00 > 0:14:02And this isn't all of it. Come through this way.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04Here's another part of the extension.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06We aren't even in the original part of the house.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09If you turn left, I'll go into what was Chloe's room,
0:14:09 > 0:14:11you can go into what was the kitchen,
0:14:11 > 0:14:15past the only remaining wall holding up the ceiling.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18It's incredible. But even we have to go home
0:14:18 > 0:14:20when it gets really, really late.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23First thing next morning, we're back in
0:14:23 > 0:14:27and it's reassuring to see that everyone's 100% focused
0:14:27 > 0:14:30on the things that really matter on this build.
0:14:30 > 0:14:31That's the key thing.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33You're over-haired and you're just a bit scruffy.
0:14:33 > 0:14:36I'm trying a new look. It's winter, I'm going into my winter plumage.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39Yep, but it's scruffy, you look un-kept.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41You should be smart, you're representing us all.
0:14:41 > 0:14:44You don't want to walk around looking a bit trampy.
0:14:44 > 0:14:47Well, I'm on a building site.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49You know, I shave. I look respectable.
0:14:49 > 0:14:51You haven't got any hair at all.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53I mean, there's a distinct lack of hair all over.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55- Are you sure this isn't jealousy? - No, it's not jealousy.
0:14:55 > 0:14:57- Really?- Honestly, I've never, ever, ever
0:14:57 > 0:14:59been bothered about being balding.
0:14:59 > 0:15:01Never.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03- Doesn't bother me.- It's just that it does grow quite quickly.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06And it, you know... But it looks good, though, doesn't it?
0:15:06 > 0:15:08- Like a hobo!- All right, no, I'll take it on board.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10Thanks very much your input.
0:15:10 > 0:15:11It's not nice, is it?
0:15:13 > 0:15:15I've got feelings!
0:15:16 > 0:15:18Well, if my new look's not impressing everyone,
0:15:18 > 0:15:19this certainly will -
0:15:19 > 0:15:23the start of Chloe's self-contained flat, complete with wet room.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26One of the things I'm doing is I'm making a big fuss
0:15:26 > 0:15:31of the central wet room space, as a kind of a feature, if you like.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33So it's not a sort of a, "Oh, we've had to squeeze in a wet room!"
0:15:33 > 0:15:35Actually, it becomes part of the architecture.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38I'm changing colour on it, changing texture on it.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41It's funny how something we all take for granted
0:15:41 > 0:15:42can become such a problem.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45Chloe's been unable to get to the upstairs bathroom
0:15:45 > 0:15:46for the past two years,
0:15:46 > 0:15:50so even a simple trip to the loo presents problems.
0:15:51 > 0:15:55And having a shower involves a two hour round-trip to her gran's house,
0:15:55 > 0:15:57which has a ground floor wet room.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01The scenario is that Suse has to get her out of bed, dressed,
0:16:01 > 0:16:02into her chair...
0:16:02 > 0:16:04Here goes trouble.
0:16:06 > 0:16:11..then into the car, round to Mum's house.
0:16:14 > 0:16:16- You OK?- Yeah.
0:16:16 > 0:16:19Not having a bathroom is one of the hardest things.
0:16:19 > 0:16:24It's, like, as a 20-year-old girl, you kind of just expect.
0:16:24 > 0:16:26It's degrading in a sense.
0:16:26 > 0:16:27It takes away that dignity.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33It's a couple of hours' job, which it takes a lot,
0:16:33 > 0:16:35a lot of effort for both Suse and Chloe.
0:16:37 > 0:16:42And just the strain of a car journey can cause Chloe to collapse.
0:16:43 > 0:16:48Chlo? Darling? Mummy's just going to take you back out to the car. OK?
0:16:51 > 0:16:52We couldn't wash her today.
0:16:52 > 0:16:56She's just had a small seizure.
0:16:56 > 0:16:59Her brain says, "Thank you very much, but no thank you."
0:16:59 > 0:17:03To protect her body, it sort of shuts down.
0:17:03 > 0:17:04We're home, Chloe.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12Chloe can't live in that room all of the time.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14She can't do it. If she did have to go into a home,
0:17:14 > 0:17:16it would tear the family apart.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21My family are my absolute world.
0:17:22 > 0:17:27I'll do anything for my family to keep them together...
0:17:28 > 0:17:29..and to...
0:17:30 > 0:17:32..make our family work...
0:17:33 > 0:17:34..as a family.
0:17:34 > 0:17:35Anything.
0:17:37 > 0:17:38And so will we, Suse.
0:17:41 > 0:17:45On site, there's been an arrival that's causing something a stir.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49That'll be heavy.
0:17:49 > 0:17:50What, you think so, Chris?
0:17:50 > 0:17:51Really? You think so?
0:17:51 > 0:17:53That's 89 kilos a metre.
0:17:53 > 0:17:57- We'll need more men.- If we just cut it in half, we can just...
0:17:58 > 0:18:00..use half the amount of blokes.
0:18:00 > 0:18:01- It's not going to work.- No.
0:18:01 > 0:18:02Cos it will...
0:18:04 > 0:18:07Quite right, Chris. Now, this big steel is heading for the hole
0:18:07 > 0:18:10that's at the bottom of the original house.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Well, I say that - it would be, if it wasn't too short.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16The structural engineer has made the opening for 5.7.
0:18:16 > 0:18:185.7 opening.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21And given the amount of people involved in a job of this size,
0:18:21 > 0:18:24we can't be sure how the steel ended up too short.
0:18:26 > 0:18:30He recalculated, said, yes, but the steel wasn't altered.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33It's an on-site mistake. It happens, doesn't it?
0:18:33 > 0:18:35- It's a bit of communication, really. - Yeah, yeah, it happens.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38Problem is, we've just got to get over it.
0:18:38 > 0:18:41I told you - communication isn't really our thing.
0:18:41 > 0:18:43Open that up. We'll get a foundation in,
0:18:43 > 0:18:45- we'll build a column on there to take the steel.- Do it.
0:18:45 > 0:18:47It's a little bit of extra work, but it's got to be done.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49Yeah, there must be a simpler solution.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52What have we got on the end of that steel, leaving that there?
0:18:52 > 0:18:54We've got a...
0:18:54 > 0:18:55200 bearing.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58Doesn't matter how many times you measure it, Chris,
0:18:58 > 0:19:00it's not going to get any longer!
0:19:00 > 0:19:03See, we were going to cut it back to here...
0:19:04 > 0:19:06..because of the kitchen design.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09The answer to the problem is leave that pier there,
0:19:09 > 0:19:10and let them redesign the kitchen.
0:19:10 > 0:19:11Do the job.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13I'm paid for thinking.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18Did he just say, "Redesign the kitchen"?
0:19:18 > 0:19:21That means talking to you-know-who.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23I've got to tell you something.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29Have we... It's not... Are we doing the wrong house?
0:19:29 > 0:19:32It feels like it. No, I'll tell you what we're doing.
0:19:32 > 0:19:35We've got a slight problem with the steel.
0:19:35 > 0:19:40The pier is about 700, which comes right through your kitchen.
0:19:40 > 0:19:41You what? 700?
0:19:41 > 0:19:44- Deep?- Right out into the room.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47No. No, no, but that's fine. That's work surface depth.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50That's just exactly what I was going to do to it,
0:19:50 > 0:19:53which was to take the original 300 and pack it out to be 700.
0:19:53 > 0:19:54I love that man.
0:19:54 > 0:19:56So, you know, what's your problem?
0:19:56 > 0:19:59- Absolutely love him.- Let's talk about the curtains.
0:19:59 > 0:20:00This is why I love working with him,
0:20:00 > 0:20:04cos you give him something like a massive problem like that,
0:20:04 > 0:20:06and he just, like, in his head it's dealt with,
0:20:06 > 0:20:07and he's rearranged the room.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13Oh, I love that man.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18Two, three!
0:20:26 > 0:20:27It looks a lot better up there
0:20:27 > 0:20:29than it did on the floor, doesn't it, lads?
0:20:29 > 0:20:32A good feeling to get the steel in. You're getting somewhere then.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34Every step you take, you're getting nearer the end.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36Every brick that's laid, you're getting nearer the end.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39Every shovelful of rubbish that's lifted,
0:20:39 > 0:20:41getting near the end.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44Every breath you take, I'll be watching you.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48Mind you, this is not a dumb site.
0:20:48 > 0:20:50Our tea lady's an off-duty lawyer,
0:20:50 > 0:20:53so that's a barrister playing a barista.
0:20:53 > 0:20:56Had some friends walking their children to school
0:20:56 > 0:20:58who thought it was hilarious that I was this side of the bar,
0:20:58 > 0:21:00so I've been ribbed a bit about that.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02But I know that if the teas and coffees don't run on schedule,
0:21:02 > 0:21:04then everything else goes to pot.
0:21:04 > 0:21:07So that's when I thought, "I've got the DIY skills of a hamster,
0:21:07 > 0:21:09"but I can make a mean cup of tea."
0:21:09 > 0:21:12So she's a barrister being a barista.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15Everyone here wants to give this family the space they need -
0:21:15 > 0:21:17not least the next-door neighbours.
0:21:17 > 0:21:18They just need to become a family again.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20And this is what you're going to provide for them.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22I mean, Chloe's been stuck, a prisoner.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25And all of a sudden they can sit down at the dining room table
0:21:25 > 0:21:27and have a meal together, and Chloe will be able to have a shower,
0:21:27 > 0:21:29which has got to be the most important thing.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31The whole plan is basically to have
0:21:31 > 0:21:33- everything for Chloe on the ground floor.- Yeah.
0:21:33 > 0:21:38She had independence before - she was a normal 18-year-old
0:21:38 > 0:21:40and did all the things you would expect somebody to do.
0:21:40 > 0:21:44And all of a sudden she's confined to a wheelchair.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46And that's just horrific.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48I don't know how... I do not know how Susie's done it.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50I really don't.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53So we have to get this house rebuilt in just a short space of time,
0:21:53 > 0:21:56and the only way to do that is to burn the midnight oil.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02After a good late night, it's day three
0:22:02 > 0:22:05and although the turn out of trade so far has been brilliant,
0:22:05 > 0:22:07today something weird's happened.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12We're very low on trades.
0:22:12 > 0:22:14We started off with 20, we're now up to 23, which is good.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17Another carpenter's just pulled up, so that's 24.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20Excellent. So I need another...
0:22:20 > 0:22:21probably 36.
0:22:22 > 0:22:24Be handy.
0:22:24 > 0:22:27You're not any good at plaster boarding or chipping, are you?
0:22:27 > 0:22:28If only!
0:22:29 > 0:22:31We need people to help out.
0:22:31 > 0:22:32We need a big weekend, basically.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34We need people to come and help us over the weekend.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38We need the numbers up to even have half a hope of getting the walls,
0:22:38 > 0:22:42doors and windows done on this behemoth of a building.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47I'm sure the police will speak to her about this.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49Hello, if you don't have any carpenters at all, do you?
0:22:50 > 0:22:53OK, all right. I'll be back in a minute, they're just taking me
0:22:53 > 0:22:55to a carpenter who lives around the corner.
0:22:57 > 0:22:58That really happened.
0:22:58 > 0:23:00That's how low on trades we are.
0:23:01 > 0:23:02He jumped into the back of a car!
0:23:04 > 0:23:06And whilst the lack of chippies is concerning,
0:23:06 > 0:23:08Billy's swimming in sparks.
0:23:08 > 0:23:10He seems to have started something of a cult.
0:23:11 > 0:23:15I think he's every electrician's aspiration.
0:23:15 > 0:23:20Whenever they come into the trade, he's the mascot.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23But also he's the guy that we aspire to.
0:23:23 > 0:23:24He's living our dream.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26There isn't anyone else.
0:23:26 > 0:23:28- He's your mascot?- He is.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- That smile...- That winning smile. - Look at it - that's it.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34- That teethy grin.- This is costing me a fortune, this has.
0:23:34 > 0:23:39So, Billy is...ambassador. Can you imagine?
0:23:41 > 0:23:43- Saint Spark.- Yeah, yeah.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48Outside, the hunt for local tradesmen continues.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50Don't think we'll find any down there, mate.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52One, two, three.
0:23:52 > 0:23:53FROG CROAKS
0:23:54 > 0:23:57Turn around there, and then go back in there.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59Yeah, there's two chippies in the van!
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Keep at it, Mark, we'll get there in the end.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04At least the back garden's coming on - sort of.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07And Chloe's uncle Dave has big plans for it.
0:24:07 > 0:24:08I'm Chloe's great uncle.
0:24:08 > 0:24:11Thought I'd do as a bit of a surprise a piece of sculpture.
0:24:11 > 0:24:14I always think of Chloe as our flower.
0:24:14 > 0:24:16- Right.- Cos she's never complained.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18You'll never hear her complaining, or, you know,
0:24:18 > 0:24:20being bitter about her condition.
0:24:21 > 0:24:24Obviously, I've been in the little back room with Chloe with the bed,
0:24:24 > 0:24:26taking most of the room up,
0:24:26 > 0:24:29floor to ceiling in medicines and whatever.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32So, yeah, it's a big transformation.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34You seem very emotional about the transformation.
0:24:34 > 0:24:35I'm emotional about it, yeah.
0:24:35 > 0:24:40Yeah, as I say, just I know what the family have been through
0:24:40 > 0:24:43and, as I say, we look at her as our flower, really.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46So I'm doing a vertical steel...
0:24:46 > 0:24:49Sorry, vertical timber pillar with a big steel flower on the top.
0:24:49 > 0:24:53I was thinking maybe a 70 foot colossus version of myself
0:24:53 > 0:24:55- in a sort of Nero-style Roman way. - Yeah.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57I've seen the drawing up in the office, actually.
0:24:57 > 0:24:59- It does look like it.- Does it?!
0:25:02 > 0:25:04And there's some good news on the trade front.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07All the boarders and plasterers have turned up in one hit.
0:25:07 > 0:25:11I reckon there must be about 25, 30 of them.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14Double chippy? Did you bring any fish with you?
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Yeah, the locals want a really have stepped up to the plate -
0:25:20 > 0:25:22and I'm not just talking about the chippies.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24Everyone wants to pitch in.
0:25:26 > 0:25:30No, that's wrong, because you haven't got the hair like that!
0:25:30 > 0:25:32Have you lot never, ever read a fairy tale?
0:25:32 > 0:25:34Do you know what these women are?
0:25:34 > 0:25:38They are witches and those are possessed gingerbread people.
0:25:38 > 0:25:42Really? And there was me thinking they were just kind-hearted bakers.
0:25:42 > 0:25:43Thank you very much indeed.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46I shall take great delight in eating bits off myself.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51We've done you a little gingerbread man.
0:25:52 > 0:25:56- Good, isn't it?- I understand that you've got a biscuit, too.
0:25:56 > 0:26:01- Yeah, I did, yeah.- She said, "We've done yours, it looks dishevelled."
0:26:01 > 0:26:03- Why is it ginger?- Look at the direct sunlight on my hair.
0:26:03 > 0:26:06- Look, it's actually... Can you see it's coppery?- Do you know, though,
0:26:06 > 0:26:08you are the king of the jungle.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11That is the mightiest mane I have seen...
0:26:11 > 0:26:12What, the big hair?
0:26:12 > 0:26:15..on a human being, apart from Mufasa, the king.
0:26:15 > 0:26:17I take that as a compliment coming from you,
0:26:17 > 0:26:21possibly the most flamboyant head male on television.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25And appearances aside, we're pushing on with this one.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27The upstairs has got walls going on.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29Nice!
0:26:29 > 0:26:33And outside, Billy's fame's growing by the second.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35Oh, and the extension's been made watertight,
0:26:35 > 0:26:36thanks to the roofing material,
0:26:36 > 0:26:39which has got Jules and Mark thinking there might be
0:26:39 > 0:26:41another outlet and a chance to earn some money.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44Feel that. I'd love a pair of pants made out of that.
0:26:44 > 0:26:45- A full suit.- Yeah.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48- Full body suit.- A full rubber suit.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50Maybe a short pair of pants.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52Yeah. Or like a vest and pants...
0:26:52 > 0:26:55- In one.- In one!- In one.- That'd be nice.- That'd be good cos you could
0:26:55 > 0:26:58cut it out, the one shape in front, and then glue them together.
0:26:58 > 0:26:59- Yeah.- Or staple them together.
0:26:59 > 0:27:03Yeah. No, you'd glue them, you'd do this.
0:27:03 > 0:27:04Rubber bond them.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08That's a bit of rubber bonding there. Look at that.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10I tell you what would be nice as well, if the weather's bad,
0:27:10 > 0:27:13you could do a bit of knee... You could make some knee-high socks
0:27:13 > 0:27:15out of it, in case there with puddles.
0:27:15 > 0:27:16And a little rubber hat.
0:27:16 > 0:27:17And a rubber hat. Yeah, that would be nice.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20Yes, you were watching two builders talking about
0:27:20 > 0:27:21having rubber suits made.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23And round the front, all the praise has gone to Billy's head.
0:27:25 > 0:27:27- EB has taken LB's taxi.- Out.
0:27:27 > 0:27:31Maybe I'm not. Maybe I'm not!
0:27:31 > 0:27:33Can someone get me a damp cloth?
0:27:33 > 0:27:35Seriously, look what he's done to my upholstery.
0:27:35 > 0:27:36- Look.- It's leather sausage.
0:27:38 > 0:27:39Nice try, Bill.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Halfway through the build and there's still a lot to do.
0:27:48 > 0:27:50We're struggling to get carpet fitters,
0:27:50 > 0:27:52and there's a couple of hundred square metres
0:27:52 > 0:27:54of driveway still to lay.
0:27:55 > 0:27:56This is epic.
0:27:59 > 0:28:00- All right.- Good morning, Nicholas.
0:28:00 > 0:28:03You look slightly different this morning.
0:28:03 > 0:28:06Well, I took on board what you said about me looking my best,
0:28:06 > 0:28:08not taking it seriously,
0:28:08 > 0:28:12so I've had a bit of a haircut and tidied myself up a little bit
0:28:12 > 0:28:14and wondered whether this would suffice as your representative
0:28:14 > 0:28:17of the programme, cos I know you were very upset about it.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19I think it's a vast improvement.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22I think you could have went a little further.
0:28:22 > 0:28:23All I can say is thank you
0:28:23 > 0:28:25for taking a bit more care in your appearance.
0:28:25 > 0:28:27I feel ready to face the day now.
0:28:27 > 0:28:30Cos I felt slightly down on myself last week.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32- I think you should have as well. - Thanks.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35'Jules really knows how to make a person feel special.'
0:28:38 > 0:28:42But nowhere near as special as the tons of trades hard at work here
0:28:42 > 0:28:46to give Chloe and her family the house they need to move forward.
0:28:46 > 0:28:47It pulls on my heartstrings,
0:28:47 > 0:28:49and I just want to give something back to the community.
0:28:49 > 0:28:51I could do stuff, I'll help out,
0:28:51 > 0:28:54I'll do anything that needs to be done, I'll get in there and do it.
0:28:54 > 0:28:56Have you known Chloe for a long time?
0:28:56 > 0:28:58- Yes, I went to primary school with her.- Primary school?
0:28:58 > 0:29:01The word on the street is that your partner is currently
0:29:01 > 0:29:04- in labour.- Yeah. - And you're here...- Yeah.
0:29:04 > 0:29:08..knowing that your new-born might be popping out at this moment in time?
0:29:08 > 0:29:11- Yeah.- Mate, respect.- Thank you.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15Or brave. I don't know which it is.
0:29:15 > 0:29:18I would say more stupidity, to be honest.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21'Never mind that, just leave work and go be with the girl.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24'Volunteers like George know just how hard life has been for Chloe,
0:29:24 > 0:29:28'who's still in hospital. Her years of illness have had an impact
0:29:28 > 0:29:30'on the whole family, including stepdad Phil.'
0:29:30 > 0:29:33Was it frustrating that you couldn't get the house the way you wanted to?
0:29:33 > 0:29:36I find it very humbling the fact that all these people have come
0:29:36 > 0:29:39to help us on something that I wished
0:29:39 > 0:29:42I'd have been able to do myself.
0:29:42 > 0:29:44I just think it's fantastic that you live
0:29:44 > 0:29:46in a community that actually cares that much.
0:29:46 > 0:29:50It's going to be difficult to find enough thanks for all these people,
0:29:50 > 0:29:51for what they've done.
0:29:52 > 0:29:56It did feel like we were fighting, at some stages, a losing battle...
0:29:58 > 0:30:02..just to get a 20-year-old girl what she needs.
0:30:03 > 0:30:05Fair play to her, Susie...
0:30:05 > 0:30:11she's banged on a lot of doors and hit a lot of brick walls,
0:30:11 > 0:30:15really, trying to get what Chloe needs
0:30:15 > 0:30:19and to try and slow Susie down is easier said than done.
0:30:19 > 0:30:23Even when I say to her, "Come on, Suse,
0:30:23 > 0:30:25"we've got to think about what did happen before."
0:30:25 > 0:30:29She has been told by doctors and what have you
0:30:29 > 0:30:35that she's got to slow herself down, but she doesn't.
0:30:36 > 0:30:40And for a husband, it does scare me.
0:30:40 > 0:30:42That's the thing, though, you fall in love with the whole package.
0:30:42 > 0:30:44Yeah. Yeah.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46Have you thought about what it's going to be like
0:30:46 > 0:30:47once the house is done?
0:30:47 > 0:30:51- All I hope for is independent living for Chloe.- Yeah.
0:30:51 > 0:30:55Which will make her life much easier,
0:30:55 > 0:30:58which in turn will make Susie's life easier,
0:30:58 > 0:31:01because obviously Susie being her primary carer -
0:31:01 > 0:31:04bring Susie's stress levels down, I'll be happy as anything.
0:31:05 > 0:31:06That's massive.
0:31:10 > 0:31:11We're heading towards the final push
0:31:11 > 0:31:13to try and get this build done in time.
0:31:13 > 0:31:15Now, here's the good news.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18Paint is going on upstairs in the bedrooms.
0:31:18 > 0:31:20Here's the bad news.
0:31:20 > 0:31:22The flooring suppliers have just dropped out.
0:31:22 > 0:31:24Oh, my God.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27And the electrics are at the second fix stage,
0:31:27 > 0:31:30plus Chloe's apartment's almost ready to be decorated.
0:31:30 > 0:31:34I'm a happy bunny, my boys have been in, look, plastering fairies.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37This is Chloe's bedroom, so Chloe's bed is going to be here.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40And guess who's putting the wall on the wet room -
0:31:40 > 0:31:44George the plasterer, whose partner is still in labour.
0:31:44 > 0:31:45How is your girlfriend?
0:31:45 > 0:31:48She's all right. The closest they've got is 17 minutes apart.
0:31:48 > 0:31:51I had hardly any sleep last night.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53It's been the longest labour in the history of the world.
0:31:53 > 0:31:54It'll take your mind off it.
0:31:54 > 0:31:57I thought I'd come here and do a bit more spreading.
0:31:57 > 0:31:58That's a plasterer for you.
0:31:59 > 0:32:03That front room is almost like we've never touched it.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07Almost. The kitchen-diner is getting a kitchen and a wood burner,
0:32:07 > 0:32:08which is nice.
0:32:09 > 0:32:12And Mark's fretting about more than just the flooring,
0:32:12 > 0:32:14but then he worries about everything, he's a worrier.
0:32:14 > 0:32:17Listen, Pete, I'm seriously worried about your driveway.
0:32:17 > 0:32:20- I know.- It's a massive driveway.
0:32:21 > 0:32:23Now, there's only two days left,
0:32:23 > 0:32:25but at least one of Mark's prayers has been answered.
0:32:25 > 0:32:26We've finally got a floor.
0:32:29 > 0:32:32It's very nice stuff. At such short notice,
0:32:32 > 0:32:35you're kind of in the realms of "get what you're given", but...
0:32:35 > 0:32:37You know how short the notice is?
0:32:37 > 0:32:39Two and a half hours. That's genuine.
0:32:39 > 0:32:41- It's two and a half hours. - Can you come over for a hug?
0:32:41 > 0:32:43- This isn't any old rubbish. It's good stuff.- It's good stuff.
0:32:43 > 0:32:46- It's very good stuff.- The thing that has really sorted my day out
0:32:46 > 0:32:48is just this influx of glamour.
0:32:48 > 0:32:51I mean, the floor is nice, but you lot...
0:32:51 > 0:32:53- None of us...- Can we keep you?
0:32:53 > 0:32:54Thank you.
0:32:56 > 0:32:58It's people like that who make the magic happen here,
0:32:58 > 0:33:00which means we can improve life for the whole family,
0:33:00 > 0:33:02including Chloe's brother Josh.
0:33:03 > 0:33:06I idolise my brother a bit.
0:33:06 > 0:33:10He's a boy of few words, until he knows you.
0:33:10 > 0:33:14Josh was very hands-on and he's very creative.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17I want to help her out.
0:33:17 > 0:33:20I did a garden outside the garage
0:33:20 > 0:33:23so she can, like, look out the window
0:33:23 > 0:33:25and have a look at it and stuff.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28Josh loves getting his hands dirty,
0:33:28 > 0:33:31so we thought this budding DIY-er might like to visit the site.
0:33:31 > 0:33:32No peeping now.
0:33:32 > 0:33:36You grab that and I'll come and sit with you.
0:33:38 > 0:33:40We've been living in here, we've been eating in here.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43- We've obviously taken the house completely apart.- Yeah.
0:33:43 > 0:33:44We've wrecked your room.
0:33:45 > 0:33:47We're going to put it back together again,
0:33:47 > 0:33:51but what would you like in... Anything you fancy seeing in there?
0:33:51 > 0:33:53Like graffiti and stuff.
0:33:53 > 0:33:55What did you say?
0:33:55 > 0:33:56Banksy and stuff.
0:33:56 > 0:33:58You're into all that street art?
0:33:58 > 0:34:02- Yeah.- I love it. Respect, big fella, respect.
0:34:02 > 0:34:03I like your style.
0:34:03 > 0:34:05'So this is how it works.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08'A young lad who turns out to be the best little brother in the world
0:34:08 > 0:34:11'says he likes street art, and immediately we get someone in
0:34:11 > 0:34:12'to give him a bedroom in that very style.
0:34:12 > 0:34:15'It's always going to be child's play for the Duke of Decoration.'
0:34:15 > 0:34:18You were talking about how you...
0:34:18 > 0:34:20your mum had disabilities when you were younger.
0:34:20 > 0:34:22When you look at Josh trying to help out his older sister
0:34:22 > 0:34:25and the first one whenever she needs her bed changing,
0:34:25 > 0:34:27- do you see something of you in that? - Oh, very much so.
0:34:27 > 0:34:30I think in many ways his room
0:34:30 > 0:34:32is probably one of the most important rooms in the house.
0:34:32 > 0:34:38It's a way of giving him an environment which is his,
0:34:38 > 0:34:42which he can control, he can take charge off.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44Everything out there he can't control,
0:34:44 > 0:34:45he can't control his sister's condition,
0:34:45 > 0:34:48he can't control the way the rest of the family is, but actually,
0:34:48 > 0:34:49when he shuts that door,
0:34:49 > 0:34:52I want to feel that he can recharge his batteries
0:34:52 > 0:34:54in a much more efficient, much more powerful way.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58So it's all hands on deck to get Josh's room shipshape...
0:35:00 > 0:35:03..turn the extension into a stylish self-contained flat for Chloe,
0:35:03 > 0:35:06and make a garden out of a mud pit.
0:35:06 > 0:35:07Oh, and fit a kitchen.
0:35:07 > 0:35:11And lay what feels like the largest driveway in the Midlands,
0:35:11 > 0:35:13and hang about 100 lights.
0:35:13 > 0:35:14And we've only got one day to do it.
0:35:14 > 0:35:16Off.
0:35:16 > 0:35:17On.
0:35:17 > 0:35:19Some people.
0:35:19 > 0:35:21Off, on.
0:35:21 > 0:35:24Plus, we still have to finish decorating the rest of the house,
0:35:24 > 0:35:25and there's bad news again.
0:35:25 > 0:35:28You have to be out and cleared and everything swept...
0:35:28 > 0:35:29Absolutely everything...
0:35:29 > 0:35:32..by six o'clock to give the floor layers a chance.
0:35:32 > 0:35:34Because if they don't, we're screwed.
0:35:34 > 0:35:37I'm worried about this one, honestly, I am worried by this.
0:35:37 > 0:35:39Let's get it emptied.
0:35:39 > 0:35:41There's a crazy amount still left to be done,
0:35:41 > 0:35:44but there's no stopping these floor fitters.
0:35:49 > 0:35:53# Why do flies suddenly appear
0:35:53 > 0:35:55# Every time you are near? #
0:35:55 > 0:35:57Look, he's dancing on our brand-new floor.
0:35:57 > 0:35:59- They finished it overnight.- Love it!
0:36:00 > 0:36:02Plastering on our last day.
0:36:02 > 0:36:03It's not a good sign, is it?
0:36:05 > 0:36:07Yeah, but we'll get there. We'll get there.
0:36:12 > 0:36:13A lot of love around the place.
0:36:17 > 0:36:18He's doing a blinding job here.
0:36:18 > 0:36:20That's a builder's joke, by the way.
0:36:20 > 0:36:22What do you call this process?
0:36:22 > 0:36:23Blinding the driveway with sand.
0:36:23 > 0:36:26- See?- What, have you told a joke to do with blinding?
0:36:26 > 0:36:28- I said he's doing a blinding job. - Oh, right.
0:36:28 > 0:36:31And what I've done is I've taken what the process is called...
0:36:31 > 0:36:33And turned it into a joke.
0:36:33 > 0:36:36- ..added it to a colloquialism... - I see.- ..to create a moment.
0:36:36 > 0:36:37Do you think it's funny?
0:36:41 > 0:36:46This boy is never happier than when he's driving plant.
0:36:46 > 0:36:47Full steam ahead.
0:36:48 > 0:36:51But really, today belongs to only one, being...
0:36:51 > 0:36:53Oh, blimey.
0:36:53 > 0:36:55- Looming.- Was I looming?
0:36:55 > 0:36:58Did you feel the air get slightly colder?
0:36:58 > 0:36:59I did.
0:36:59 > 0:37:03If you look very carefully, there is no reflection of him in the window.
0:37:07 > 0:37:09'Special forces are at work here. Well, they must be.
0:37:09 > 0:37:13'Or we wouldn't stand a chance of getting this finished for tomorrow.'
0:37:13 > 0:37:15This is the big day for you, isn't it?
0:37:15 > 0:37:19This is when it becomes a kind of cushion apocalypse.
0:37:19 > 0:37:21Yes. And it's a kind of day, really, where your vision
0:37:21 > 0:37:23that we were talking at the beginning of the week,
0:37:23 > 0:37:24that you have, this strange vision
0:37:24 > 0:37:26that you can have that I don't have...
0:37:26 > 0:37:28You're really bouncy this morning.
0:37:28 > 0:37:30Well, it's the last day, I'm excited.
0:37:30 > 0:37:33- I'm excited.- You're going like this. - Here we are, here is your vision,
0:37:33 > 0:37:36it's been fed through our mincer where we've mangled your vision
0:37:36 > 0:37:38with what we can achieve, what we can get hold of,
0:37:38 > 0:37:41what we can afford to pay you for and what people have given us.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44And now only you can mess it up.
0:37:44 > 0:37:49Yes. Or symphonically turn it into great genius.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52I'm on that knife edge this morning.
0:37:52 > 0:37:55Yes, I think he's been on a knife edge his whole life, to be honest,
0:37:55 > 0:37:57but he's staying the right side of madness at the moment.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59Outside, there's still the entire extension to render
0:37:59 > 0:38:01and what's left of the garden to landscape.
0:38:01 > 0:38:04Luckily, the family's friends have rallied round,
0:38:04 > 0:38:06including Phil's mechanic mate, Hugh.
0:38:08 > 0:38:10Chloe lives at home but only in one room,
0:38:10 > 0:38:12and they haven't really been together as a family.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15- Is this going to do the job for them?- Absolutely.
0:38:15 > 0:38:16Through that new build,
0:38:16 > 0:38:18Chloe will be living in there and she can come in,
0:38:18 > 0:38:21into the main kitchen area there in a wheelchair.
0:38:21 > 0:38:23It will be amazing. Absolutely amazing.
0:38:23 > 0:38:29As we rebuild Chloe's family home, she's still very sick in hospital.
0:38:29 > 0:38:31And we haven't been able to speak to her on camera.
0:38:33 > 0:38:35Earlier in the week I went to catch-up with Susie
0:38:35 > 0:38:37to find out how her daughter's doing.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43Every big event that's happened, Chloe's missed out on.
0:38:45 > 0:38:50She's got herself overexcited and everything else, and then...
0:38:50 > 0:38:52There's a physical effect.
0:38:52 > 0:38:54- ..the physical effects.- You've been through such a lot,
0:38:54 > 0:38:56and it must be, as a mum,
0:38:56 > 0:38:59massively taxing to see your baby go through all this.
0:38:59 > 0:39:01Yes, it's heart-wrenching.
0:39:01 > 0:39:07If I could take it all away from Chloe and I have it,
0:39:07 > 0:39:09I would do anything for that.
0:39:09 > 0:39:12I really would. For a split second when you wake up in the morning,
0:39:12 > 0:39:13everything's fine.
0:39:14 > 0:39:19And then your heart sinks because you realise it's the reality.
0:39:19 > 0:39:21And it does hit you.
0:39:22 > 0:39:27I couldn't answer Chloe's daily question - "Why me?
0:39:28 > 0:39:30"What's going on with me, Mum?"
0:39:30 > 0:39:33And I didn't have the answers.
0:39:33 > 0:39:35I actually had a breakdown.
0:39:35 > 0:39:37Do you think that's because you weren't accepting
0:39:37 > 0:39:38that your best was your best?
0:39:39 > 0:39:41Yeah.
0:39:41 > 0:39:44And I became very low very quickly.
0:39:44 > 0:39:47Very low. And I had to go into hospital.
0:39:48 > 0:39:53You put so much pressure on yourself that you can't take it any more.
0:39:54 > 0:39:58And it's true what they say, until you've reached rock bottom
0:39:58 > 0:40:02and you can wake up one day and say, "Enough's enough."
0:40:02 > 0:40:06What gave you the strength to be OK?
0:40:06 > 0:40:07- Phil.- Was it?
0:40:07 > 0:40:09Yeah.
0:40:09 > 0:40:10The fact he didn't leave,
0:40:10 > 0:40:13he didn't stop telling me how much he loved me.
0:40:15 > 0:40:16He just carried on.
0:40:18 > 0:40:21He just carried on, giving me hugs every day.
0:40:22 > 0:40:25And telling me that, you know...
0:40:26 > 0:40:34..I was the best thing in his world and that I had to come home.
0:40:34 > 0:40:36They needed me.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38And just to genuinely feel that.
0:40:38 > 0:40:41- You see, that's a proper love story. - Yeah.
0:40:41 > 0:40:44- Not all this rubbish you see on films.- No.
0:40:44 > 0:40:47With everything that's happened,
0:40:47 > 0:40:51- do you feel lucky or unlucky in life?- I feel very blessed.
0:40:54 > 0:40:57I feel it's part of a journey, and you ask Chloe the same question,
0:40:57 > 0:40:59and it's Chloe who has taught me that.
0:40:59 > 0:41:03Have you thought about it, how life's going to be from now on?
0:41:03 > 0:41:06It just means that Chloe can carry on living at home,
0:41:06 > 0:41:09which in turn means that we can carry on being a family.
0:41:10 > 0:41:12And, erm...
0:41:14 > 0:41:17..our motto is family -
0:41:17 > 0:41:19where life begins and love never ends.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23And by you coming and doing that for us...
0:41:26 > 0:41:27..we can be a family.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34Well, there's no better reason to do what we do, is there?
0:41:34 > 0:41:37Mind you, we've still got a lot to get done.
0:41:37 > 0:41:38This is our final day.
0:41:38 > 0:41:40There's not much daylight left.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43And there's still close to 200 square metres of driveway to lay.
0:41:43 > 0:41:46Time is most definitely not on our side.
0:41:46 > 0:41:49Hang on. Is there supposed to be a gap in the splashback?
0:41:49 > 0:41:51That's amazing.
0:41:51 > 0:41:54But what's amazing is the fact that you didn't measure it.
0:41:54 > 0:41:57- Who actually measured it?- I don't know, but it wasn't you.
0:41:57 > 0:41:58Yes, thank God.
0:41:58 > 0:42:01What it's going to be, it's going to be one of those impromptu design
0:42:01 > 0:42:05features that actually lift the scheme from the ordinaire,
0:42:05 > 0:42:08the plebeian, the expected, into something actually borderline genius
0:42:08 > 0:42:10because it's not quite right.
0:42:10 > 0:42:12Go on. Go on, boy!
0:42:12 > 0:42:14Hey! Go on.
0:42:14 > 0:42:16Go on, LLB.
0:42:16 > 0:42:19It's one of those imperfections that actually makes creativity
0:42:19 > 0:42:22- what it is today. - Go on, keep going.
0:42:22 > 0:42:24You see, we are breaking him.
0:42:24 > 0:42:27Right! Let's get them on the wall.
0:42:27 > 0:42:30'Whilst we break him inside, Julian outside - part man, part machine -
0:42:30 > 0:42:33'can't quite overcome the size of this driveway.'
0:42:33 > 0:42:35You're a bit tense?
0:42:36 > 0:42:40Too tense. I'm a wigwam and a teepee.
0:42:40 > 0:42:43You see, not too tense to make a joke.
0:42:43 > 0:42:44That's what I like about you, Jules,
0:42:44 > 0:42:46even in times of extreme stress.
0:42:46 > 0:42:48But you've had a day on the digger.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50In fact, you've had two days. Three days on the digger.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53Yeah, it's looking like I'm going to have a whole night on the digger.
0:42:53 > 0:42:55We've got another 12-14 hours' work here ahead of us,
0:42:55 > 0:42:57at the rate it's been going today.
0:42:57 > 0:42:59I think it's going to suddenly accelerate.
0:42:59 > 0:43:02'I'm lying, of course, but I want to encourage him.'
0:43:02 > 0:43:04It's six o'clock in the evening now
0:43:04 > 0:43:06and we are sailing pretty close to the wind with this one.
0:43:06 > 0:43:08Truth of the matter is, we'll get as done as we can,
0:43:08 > 0:43:10finish maybe two, three o'clock in the morning
0:43:10 > 0:43:12and whatever state it's in then,
0:43:12 > 0:43:13that's how we'll show it to the family.
0:43:13 > 0:43:17I think people sometimes think we make this up, the jeopardy,
0:43:17 > 0:43:19it's always this tight.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Well, maybe not quite as tight as it is this time.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25And even though Chloe's still in hospital,
0:43:25 > 0:43:27we're hoping she'll be well enough to return home
0:43:27 > 0:43:30and see what all these volunteers have done.
0:43:30 > 0:43:33But she's only coming home if she's well enough.
0:43:38 > 0:43:41Nine days ago, chronically-ill Chloe was a virtual prisoner,
0:43:41 > 0:43:44confined to just one room in the family home.
0:43:45 > 0:43:48It's not my bedroom and I don't ever call it a bedroom.
0:43:48 > 0:43:50I just call it my cell.
0:43:50 > 0:43:54A 20-year-old woman in need of some independence.
0:43:54 > 0:43:56I just want some space to call my own.
0:43:57 > 0:44:03And having my own bedroom that's not the lounge
0:44:03 > 0:44:05so my family have some space too,
0:44:05 > 0:44:07I want space for them as well.
0:44:08 > 0:44:12Chloe said, "I think you should put me in a care home..."
0:44:14 > 0:44:17She said, "..because I've taken over your lives,
0:44:17 > 0:44:19"I've taken over the house."
0:44:20 > 0:44:24I couldn't find an answer to keep us together as a family.
0:44:24 > 0:44:30This is literally the only way I have a chance at independence.
0:44:30 > 0:44:33And to have it in sight, it's hard to believe.
0:44:34 > 0:44:37So, hopefully, with the help of these West Midlands heroes,
0:44:37 > 0:44:39we've done just that.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42I'd like to think, you know, someone would do it for me if my daughter
0:44:42 > 0:44:43was in the same situation, so.
0:44:44 > 0:44:46Nine days of incredible graft.
0:44:49 > 0:44:52And we've pulled off a blinder.
0:44:52 > 0:44:54The access to the front has been improved,
0:44:54 > 0:44:56with a wider door and hall,
0:44:56 > 0:44:59so Chloe can enter and leave easily.
0:45:01 > 0:45:05Inside, we've knocked down walls so she can also access the front room
0:45:05 > 0:45:08we weren't meant to touch but kind of did.
0:45:10 > 0:45:14And the narrow doors and small rooms have been transformed
0:45:14 > 0:45:18into this stunning, spacious open-plan kitchen-diner
0:45:18 > 0:45:21where all the family can get together.
0:45:24 > 0:45:29But, most importantly, a massive new extension at the back of the house
0:45:29 > 0:45:32means Chloe will no longer be captive in the room
0:45:32 > 0:45:33she called her cell.
0:45:33 > 0:45:37Instead, she'll have the space of her own she so badly needs.
0:45:40 > 0:45:43This young woman now has a self-contained apartment
0:45:43 > 0:45:44on the ground floor
0:45:44 > 0:45:47that Laurence has decked out in her dream decor.
0:45:48 > 0:45:50And she's finally got a bathroom,
0:45:50 > 0:45:53so she doesn't have to make the exhausting journey to her nan's
0:45:53 > 0:45:55just for a shower.
0:45:55 > 0:45:57Plus, she's got an electric hoist to move herself around.
0:46:00 > 0:46:01The garden is small, but perfectly formed,
0:46:01 > 0:46:03with raised beds Chloe can reach,
0:46:03 > 0:46:06plus her uncle's flower sculpture.
0:46:09 > 0:46:11Upstairs looks totally different too.
0:46:11 > 0:46:13As well as a new family bathroom,
0:46:13 > 0:46:15Josh's bedroom has a new urban chic look.
0:46:17 > 0:46:19I know he's going to love it.
0:46:19 > 0:46:21I mean, what teenage kid wouldn't love it?
0:46:23 > 0:46:26And Susie and Phil can now retreat to their own space,
0:46:26 > 0:46:29for those rare moments they get to relax.
0:46:31 > 0:46:32Chloe is still in hospital,
0:46:32 > 0:46:36but what will they think of their almost unrecognisable home?
0:46:40 > 0:46:42What you needed from us was to make a home
0:46:42 > 0:46:44where you could all be together,
0:46:44 > 0:46:46space you could enjoy as a family,
0:46:46 > 0:46:49because the way the house was set out was keeping you apart.
0:46:50 > 0:46:51I hope we've done that for you.
0:46:54 > 0:46:55Open your eyes.
0:46:56 > 0:46:58SUSIE GASPS
0:47:00 > 0:47:01God.
0:47:10 > 0:47:14- I just don't know what to say.- Oh, my gosh.
0:47:15 > 0:47:17Is it what you need?
0:47:17 > 0:47:20- And then some.- It's just amazing.
0:47:23 > 0:47:24Oh, my goodness.
0:47:27 > 0:47:32- The room that was Chloe's room, that was the prison room...- Yeah.
0:47:32 > 0:47:35..was just this bit here.
0:47:35 > 0:47:36- Yeah.- It's mind-boggling.
0:47:36 > 0:47:37It really, really is.
0:47:38 > 0:47:40- You're not saying much.- No.
0:47:40 > 0:47:41Speechless.
0:47:44 > 0:47:46PHONE RINGS
0:47:47 > 0:47:48Hi, darling.
0:47:50 > 0:47:53We can't have Susie and Phil out of contact with Chloe,
0:47:53 > 0:47:56so we're pausing just for a minute, just to make sure she's OK.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59OK.
0:47:59 > 0:48:00- How are we doing?- Yeah.
0:48:00 > 0:48:04She's had a really bad night, but we've tried to say to her, look,
0:48:04 > 0:48:08- "You don't have to come today," but...- She's determined.
0:48:08 > 0:48:10..she's so determined.
0:48:10 > 0:48:13- She's missed so much.- Yeah.
0:48:13 > 0:48:16So let's go en route. So, dining table, we wanted to make sure...
0:48:16 > 0:48:18You said you wanted somewhere you could all eat together.
0:48:18 > 0:48:21What we've done is we've made sure there's oxygen throughout down here.
0:48:21 > 0:48:24That just means we can all just be together.
0:48:24 > 0:48:27If she wants to stay in this part of the house with us,
0:48:27 > 0:48:30she doesn't have to go back for oxygen.
0:48:30 > 0:48:32That is amazing.
0:48:32 > 0:48:34That is absolutely brilliant.
0:48:34 > 0:48:35Oh, my God!
0:48:37 > 0:48:38Oh, wow.
0:48:42 > 0:48:44- This is Chloe.- Oh, my goodness.
0:48:46 > 0:48:52Oh, wow. Look, there's a hoist system and everything.
0:48:52 > 0:48:54Oh, wow.
0:48:54 > 0:48:58- Well, it's her own space, isn't it? And independence.- Yeah.
0:48:58 > 0:48:59It's as if she's come in and done it herself.
0:48:59 > 0:49:01Yeah, yeah.
0:49:02 > 0:49:05'Now, sadly, the whole time we've been here,
0:49:05 > 0:49:07'Chloe has been in hospital.
0:49:07 > 0:49:09'We've all been wishing her a swift recovery.
0:49:10 > 0:49:12'And, of course, over the years,
0:49:12 > 0:49:16'she's missed so many important family events.
0:49:16 > 0:49:19'But we had to be sure that the doctors gave the all clear
0:49:19 > 0:49:22'for her to come home before she could.
0:49:22 > 0:49:23'And do you know what? They have.
0:49:25 > 0:49:27'Chloe is coming home.'
0:49:27 > 0:49:29- How are you this morning?- Fantastic.
0:49:29 > 0:49:31- Yes.- Is that actually true or are you just saying that?
0:49:31 > 0:49:33No, but I'm here, so it's fine.
0:49:33 > 0:49:36OK, just so you know, you can't normally have a gravel driveway with
0:49:36 > 0:49:39a wheelchair, but just underneath, there's this hexagon stuff.
0:49:39 > 0:49:41- Oh, I see.- So that's why it works.
0:49:41 > 0:49:44- Ready to come see your house?- Yeah.- Come on.
0:49:45 > 0:49:49- And I can get round?- Yeah, cos we widened the door for you.
0:49:50 > 0:49:53- And widened the hallway.- Oh, gosh.
0:49:53 > 0:49:54No way.
0:49:54 > 0:49:56- Way.- Way.
0:49:58 > 0:50:00Oh, no!
0:50:03 > 0:50:04- What do you think, Josh?- I love it.
0:50:04 > 0:50:07It's magic, isn't it?
0:50:07 > 0:50:08Isn't it magic?
0:50:08 > 0:50:09Got a table.
0:50:11 > 0:50:14This was the room that you couldn't get into
0:50:14 > 0:50:15and now...
0:50:15 > 0:50:17- Oh, my gosh.- ..you can.
0:50:17 > 0:50:19I can!
0:50:19 > 0:50:21No way.
0:50:22 > 0:50:24Oh, my gosh.
0:50:24 > 0:50:26- Isn't it amazing?- It's longer.
0:50:26 > 0:50:28- Yeah.- But we moved that wall on the left in a bit,
0:50:28 > 0:50:30that's how you can get the room in the corridor,
0:50:30 > 0:50:33- so you can get your wheelchair in. - But it works.
0:50:34 > 0:50:36Good quality reversing.
0:50:36 > 0:50:37I'm a female driver.
0:50:37 > 0:50:39You might want to open that door.
0:50:39 > 0:50:42- Can you get to that door and open it?- I can get to everything.
0:50:42 > 0:50:45- Do you know what's in there? - This one? Oh, wow.
0:50:45 > 0:50:48- How cool is that?- Do you know why we put it on this side?
0:50:48 > 0:50:51- So then I can get to it.- Yeah, you can put your own washing in then.
0:50:51 > 0:50:52What did you do that for?
0:50:54 > 0:50:56What we've tried to do is build your independence...
0:50:56 > 0:50:58Yes, you've done a really good job.
0:50:58 > 0:51:00- ..which means you have to do your own washing sometimes.- Yeah.
0:51:00 > 0:51:02- I can live with that. - That's on camera, Chloe.
0:51:02 > 0:51:04One other thing you might notice in the corner?
0:51:04 > 0:51:06Oxygen. That's good.
0:51:06 > 0:51:08That will help a lot.
0:51:08 > 0:51:10And it's piped through that door there...
0:51:11 > 0:51:13..which leads into your tiny little cupboard space.
0:51:14 > 0:51:18- You've got your own apartment, effectively.- No way.
0:51:18 > 0:51:19No way!
0:51:19 > 0:51:21Well, just have a look.
0:51:21 > 0:51:23Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31I can't speak. And I can never not speak!
0:51:33 > 0:51:35No. Look at the walls.
0:51:35 > 0:51:37That's what I wanted.
0:51:37 > 0:51:39- And they did it!- Amazing.
0:51:39 > 0:51:42So, designed by Laurence for you, specifically for you.
0:51:42 > 0:51:44- Nobody else has got that. - Laurence designed my wallpaper?
0:51:44 > 0:51:46- For you.- He's awesome.
0:51:46 > 0:51:49Right, don't go on about him. He's all right.
0:51:49 > 0:51:51No, I won't, I won't, it's fine.
0:51:51 > 0:51:53You don't have to work with him.
0:51:54 > 0:51:56Is your bum clean, sitting on my chair?
0:51:56 > 0:51:57Sorry.
0:51:59 > 0:52:01- You know.- Good point.
0:52:01 > 0:52:03This is going to be a shoes-off kind of house.
0:52:03 > 0:52:05- Let me show you a couple things. Your own front door.- Yes.
0:52:05 > 0:52:07Own access down the side of the house.
0:52:07 > 0:52:09All your friends can come in and out of here as well.
0:52:09 > 0:52:11If you hold this so that it looks like the corner of the room,
0:52:11 > 0:52:15- see what I mean?- Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Then press the middle one.- That one?
0:52:15 > 0:52:16That one there.
0:52:16 > 0:52:19Oh, my gosh.
0:52:19 > 0:52:22That also opens those doors out into the garden.
