0:00:02 > 0:00:05The Isle of Sheppey in Kent is home to one extraordinary family...

0:00:05 > 0:00:08- ALL:- Hello, we're the Ratcliffe family!

0:00:08 > 0:00:12..two boys and two girls, brought together by two dads.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14We adopted four vulnerable kids

0:00:14 > 0:00:17because we wanted to give them the best life we possibly can.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20We wanted to give permanency to the kids -

0:00:20 > 0:00:22a forever family.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26It's a family built on the firm foundations of love and devotion.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Three of the children have severe disabilities,

0:00:29 > 0:00:32a challenge that most of us would find overwhelming.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35They are superheroes. It's very much a way of life for them,

0:00:35 > 0:00:36and I never hear them complain.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40- But this happy family life is under threat.- Boo!

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Crammed into a tiny bungalow,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45it's their home that threatens their future.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49I can be in the bath. There can be another child on the toilet,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52having an enema with another child on the potty.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Most kids have a bedroom. He doesn't.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00We need space and dignity for all of those kids.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03And that's why we're here - to take on a massive challenge

0:01:03 > 0:01:05unlike any we've ever faced.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09We have just nine days to build a whole house from the ground up.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Yes, a brand-new home from scratch! We'll need to aim higher...

0:01:13 > 0:01:17- I think it's possible. Do YOU think it's possible? ALL:- Yes!

0:01:17 > 0:01:20..dig deeper... Oh, he's gone all emotional. Oh!

0:01:20 > 0:01:23- ..and keep cooler... - It's just literally cut out on us.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24..than ever before.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27I don't want to worry you, but tarmac is here in half an hour.

0:01:27 > 0:01:28I want to get out of this one.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31And, as always, we're relying entirely on the goodwill

0:01:31 > 0:01:34and tirelessness of the local community and trades.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Doing something for a family that means the world to them,

0:01:37 > 0:01:38it's a privilege.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41We have to work out where we're going to get an army of builders.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43What's happening in that marquee over there?

0:01:43 > 0:01:46Is it just me or can anyone else smell cake?

0:01:46 > 0:01:50- What are you lot doing? ALL:- Waiting!

0:01:50 > 0:01:54- I don't suppose you can help out on a DIY SOS, would you? ALL:- Yes!

0:01:54 > 0:01:56LAUGHTER

0:01:56 > 0:02:01This is DIY SOS: The Big Build! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Kyle and Garry Ratcliffe became civil partners ten years ago.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15As a social care worker and a primary school headteacher,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18they were both used to caring for other people's children.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21But really, they wanted family of their own.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24It was ten years ago and it wasn't the norm

0:02:24 > 0:02:26for two gay men to be adopting kids,

0:02:26 > 0:02:32so we applied to be foster carers and that's how it all started.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35The first one to join our family was Haydn

0:02:35 > 0:02:38and he came when he was six years old.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41In the advert, it said this little boy had cerebral palsy

0:02:41 > 0:02:42and that was fine for us

0:02:42 > 0:02:45because my background is working with kids with special needs.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The first time I saw Haydn, it was in his foster carer's house

0:02:49 > 0:02:54and he was sitting in a chair expectantly,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57not knowing, himself, who's going to walk through the door

0:02:57 > 0:02:59and we saw him and fell in love with him

0:02:59 > 0:03:01from the first time we met him, really.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04He had a smile that went from ear to ear,

0:03:04 > 0:03:08but there was a bit of sadness and vulnerability

0:03:08 > 0:03:09behind that smile, I think.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Despite Haydn's needs, Garry and Kyle were smitten

0:03:12 > 0:03:15and took steps to go from fostering to full adoption

0:03:15 > 0:03:17and become his legal parents.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20And in that time, they were still open to fostering others.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24We had this very vulnerable little boy

0:03:24 > 0:03:27who started to come and stay with us,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29just for respite, and that was Curtis.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Curtis' needs were even greater.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35As well as cerebral palsy, he's severely epileptic,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38blind and prone to life-threatening chest infections.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41We were told that, you know,

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Curtis won't get to his first birthday and then he did.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48And then we were told he wouldn't get to his second birthday

0:03:48 > 0:03:50and we did.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53And now we're waiting for him to get to his sixth birthday.

0:03:53 > 0:03:54Sorry.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00The possible risk and heartache of losing a child

0:04:00 > 0:04:03didn't stop Garry and Kyle falling in love again

0:04:03 > 0:04:05and adopting Curtis as well.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08He came, he fitted in,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Haydn became a big brother overnight,

0:04:11 > 0:04:13and it was the right thing.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18And then these girls turned up on our doorstep,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20just for fostering, again.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27We hadn't ever thought we were going to have girls in our family

0:04:27 > 0:04:30and having Haydn and Curtis was quite enough.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Bella and Phoebe were already sisters by birth

0:04:33 > 0:04:37but they'd been taken into care when their parents couldn't cope.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42Bella has Down syndrome and both have had a rough start in life.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46We weren't really ready for the girls when they walked in,

0:04:46 > 0:04:51cos they were dirty and practically bald from the head lice.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54We went into practical mode, you know, Team Ratcliffe.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58I went out and I bought new clothes and soap and shampoo

0:04:58 > 0:05:03and a few toys and we started again from scratch that night.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Phoebe didn't know her name. She didn't talk for the first ten days.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Bella was confused.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11She's gone from living with her birth parents

0:05:11 > 0:05:15to suddenly being with two guys that she doesn't know

0:05:15 > 0:05:19and two boys that she doesn't know and that's confusing.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23It wasn't long before Kyle and Garry fell in love with the girls.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26How many tomatoes are here? Can you count them?

0:05:26 > 0:05:30After a fairly short period of time,

0:05:30 > 0:05:34we began the adoption process for the girls as well

0:05:34 > 0:05:38and overnight, our world completely turned upside down.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Garry and Kyle had already shown social services

0:05:41 > 0:05:44that they were amazing parents and here they were,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47offering a ready-made family, a lifeline to the girls.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51Taking on four children with so many needs is a challenge

0:05:51 > 0:05:53but they faced a further hurdle.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57The six of them live in a tired and tiny three-bedroom bungalow

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and every room is bursting with medical supplies.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Today is my birthday!

0:06:05 > 0:06:09At 13, Haydn's a growing lad and desperately needs some independence.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12He's a teenager now and he wants his own privacy

0:06:12 > 0:06:14and he wants to be doing things himself.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16He can't get himself into the bathroom,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19he can't get into the kitchen, he can't get out of the back door.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22He can't get out of the front door without somebody helping him.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29As soon as he comes home, he's disabled from...the house.

0:06:29 > 0:06:34Bella is 11. She has a makeshift bedroom in the boot room.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Ready, Curly-Wurly? Your turn.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38And Curtis, who has the greatest medical needs,

0:06:38 > 0:06:41sleeps in the living room, which is also their dining room.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46- You're good at eating now, aren't you?- Yeah.- Mm.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50Mealtimes are tough because the amount of equipment we have.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Just setting up for dinner takes a long time,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55let alone actually sitting together and eating.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56We do everything we can to be outside,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58so we don't have to be inside.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00And it's only when it comes to bedtime and bath time

0:07:00 > 0:07:02that we come in.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05But with just one toilet in the only bathroom,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07they lack the most basic facilities.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11In the crudest sense, I can be in the bath, there can be another child

0:07:11 > 0:07:14on the toilet, having an enema, with another child on the potty.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17And yesterday, God forgive me,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21but Haydn or Curtis was on the toilet

0:07:21 > 0:07:24and Phoebe actually went to the toilet outside

0:07:24 > 0:07:26cos she couldn't wait.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30That's not a great position to be in, really.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34We adopted four vulnerable kids because we wanted to give them

0:07:34 > 0:07:37the best life we possibly can and we're not doing that at the moment.

0:07:37 > 0:07:43We need some space and dignity and privacy for all of those kids,

0:07:43 > 0:07:45for lots of different reasons, really.

0:07:45 > 0:07:50Make no mistake, Garry and Kyle have built an amazing family,

0:07:50 > 0:07:52so we must build them a home to match.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54So, what do you need then, Haydn?

0:07:54 > 0:07:57- Presumably, we need some more rooms for your brothers and sisters.- Yeah.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01- Unless you want to share with Phoebe.- No.- No!

0:08:01 > 0:08:05- Why don't you want to share a room? - Cos Phoebe wakes me up.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- Yeah, at the morning time. - They are typical brother and sister,

0:08:09 > 0:08:12in that they bicker constantly.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Very much the way that our building team

0:08:14 > 0:08:17are a very dysfunctional family. THEY LAUGH

0:08:17 > 0:08:20- But you did ask us to come and extend.- Yeah.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22But the fact of the matter is that it's impossible to do so.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24The structure of the house is not strong enough,

0:08:24 > 0:08:28but the good news is we're going to knock it all down and start again.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Which is...

0:08:31 > 0:08:35The upside is that we can actually, because we're building from scratch,

0:08:35 > 0:08:38design something that is absolutely bespoke to your needs.

0:08:38 > 0:08:43- That's amazing.- What do you reckon, Haydn?- Good.- Good?- Yeah.- Just good?

0:08:43 > 0:08:45- That's good.- Amazing.- Good. - Well, I'm glad.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- And you think so too, do you, Phoebe?- Yeah.- That's good.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Excellent.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53With the kids' seal of approval, there is no going back.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56I'm going to press the button. You can say, "Three, two, one, go."

0:08:56 > 0:08:57- Go.- Three, two, one, go!

0:08:57 > 0:08:59'OK, got it.'

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Wave bye-bye to the house.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06Yes, this is truly a first for DIY SOS - a complete house build,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08from start to finish.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- Right, it's starting to rain.- Yeah.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- And we've got a lot of knocking down to do, so we'll let you go.- Thanks.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15- I'll come and see you during the week.- Thank you.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17But next time you come back down this road,

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- we'll have a new house for you.- Wow.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Just to get to the starting line,

0:09:21 > 0:09:23we have to flatten their existing bungalow

0:09:23 > 0:09:26before we can take on building an entirely new home

0:09:26 > 0:09:28from the ground up in just nine days.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32Normally, it can take six months, a year, two years.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35We're doing it on a very specific timeline, so it is nerve-racking.

0:09:35 > 0:09:40Doable, we think, but we only think, cos we haven't done it before.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42To give us an outside chance of finishing,

0:09:42 > 0:09:44in the few weeks running up to the main build,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47we're relying on an army of volunteers working day and night

0:09:47 > 0:09:49to build a platform totally insulated

0:09:49 > 0:09:52but complete with underfloor heating.

0:09:52 > 0:09:53We can't thank these guys enough.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Their incredible efforts to get it ready

0:09:56 > 0:09:59for this lot to build a brand-new home.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02We are going to do something never tried before,

0:10:02 > 0:10:06which is build a house from the ground up in just nine days.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- I think it's possible. Do YOU think it's possible? ALL:- Yes!

0:10:09 > 0:10:11- Are you going to pull it off? ALL:- Yes!

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Then let's get to it! THEY CHEER

0:10:14 > 0:10:18- Go!- Yeah!- Yeah!- See you tomorrow.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Billy might not have much to do until there's a house up,

0:10:21 > 0:10:24but there's a team of 14 guys here to build the timber frame.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27The one in charge of getting it up on time is Alwyn.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30A bit of a challenge, yeah, yeah, but we'll get there.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33By the end of play today, we'll have most of the trusses up

0:10:33 > 0:10:35and then we'll finish off tomorrow

0:10:35 > 0:10:37with the flat roof section which is in here.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40- By lunchtime tomorrow, we'll be out of here. That's the plan.- Get out!

0:10:40 > 0:10:44- Really?- Your roofers are booked. Mark has booked the roofers for 12.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46- Oh, is that right? - So, I'm under pressure.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49It's all got to fit like a massive jigsaw puzzle.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53- And only you can mess it up at this stage.- Thank you, Nick.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54THEY LAUGH

0:10:54 > 0:10:56'Well, that's not entirely true.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59'Some of our team are highly skilled at messing it up and...

0:10:59 > 0:11:03'Hang on! Isn't there a load of underfloor heating down there?'

0:11:03 > 0:11:06We've got a soil stack just at the wrong place here.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09What we've got to do is take out part of the screed

0:11:09 > 0:11:11but we have it all mapped out

0:11:11 > 0:11:13so, hopefully, we won't hit any underfloor heating.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Ha-ha! Hopefully, hopefully.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Yes... Until we've built a basic shell,

0:11:17 > 0:11:19our boys haven't got much to do.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23For the thinking man's electrician, it's some precious downtime.

0:11:24 > 0:11:29- RECORDING:- 'My name is... Ich heisse...your name.'

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Ich heisse Billy.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Tweedledee and Tweedledum are a bit redundant too.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Loads of materials on site. - For the inside?- For the inside.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42- Nothing for the back garden.- Is it not happening?- Nothing whatsoever.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46I can hear a bit of annoyance in the tone of your voice.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- We're missing all this glorious weather.- Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Then all the materials will turn up, and it'll rain for six days.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53They're like caged lions, trying to get at it

0:11:53 > 0:11:55and they're going to have to wait a bit longer.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58I told you you couldn't cut a hole there!

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Unfortunately, if we look down here...

0:12:00 > 0:12:01- Can I move you for a second?- Yeah.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05So, where we've dug it out, where we thought there were no pipes,

0:12:05 > 0:12:08there are, in fact, pipes, and we've cut through them,

0:12:08 > 0:12:10so we now have to get the plumbers back.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Can you get me the underfloor heating guys on the phone?

0:12:13 > 0:12:14I need to speak to them immediately.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16'We won't know quite how much damage we've done

0:12:16 > 0:12:18'until we've dug out the screed,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21'but we don't want to make things easy for our brand-new designer.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25'Sophie Robinson may have over 20 years of design experience

0:12:25 > 0:12:28'but this colour-loving, pattern-clashing cushion hugger

0:12:28 > 0:12:31'has never done a DIY SOS before.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33'She's in for such a treat!'

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- Excited?- Very excited! - Got everything?

0:12:37 > 0:12:39We've got to check cos, obviously, we're on site.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- You've got everything? All your PPE? Steel toecap boots?- Yes. Check.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- Hard hat. Check.- High vis.- Check. - Blue bow.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Giant bow, big earrings. Check.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Always very important we try to make sure...

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Mark, Mark, can you come over and join me?

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Cos, obviously, important,

0:12:53 > 0:12:57and the boys here like to make you feel comfortable.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00You look beautiful! Very on trend.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02I'm glad you've come with all your PPE.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05So, looking forward to it or are you a bit apprehensive?

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Oh, my God, it's totally terrifying

0:13:07 > 0:13:09because to build a house like this in nine days,

0:13:09 > 0:13:10I can't actually get my head around it.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- This does not happen in the real world.- It does here!

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Clad almost entirely in black larch,

0:13:16 > 0:13:20this single-storey home nearly doubles the size of its predecessor.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24It's set around an internal glazed courtyard, allowing light in

0:13:24 > 0:13:26and giving sightlines through the whole building.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30A huge open-plan kitchen-diner and living room

0:13:30 > 0:13:33will allow the whole family to be together.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37Then, via double-width hallways with level access,

0:13:37 > 0:13:40each of the kids will have their own rooms.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Haydn and Curtis will have a bedroom

0:13:42 > 0:13:45either side of their own huge accessible bathroom.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47The girls will also have their own rooms

0:13:47 > 0:13:49and a share of a second bathroom.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52And Garry and Kyle will have a master bedroom suite to themselves

0:13:52 > 0:13:55with direct access onto the courtyard.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57For a first-timer, she's not holding back, I tell you.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01- This build is so big, it has a courtyard in the middle of it.- Yeah.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- That's kind of out there, isn't it? - Well, why not?

0:14:03 > 0:14:05If you're planning something from scratch,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07you can have whatever you want and, obviously,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10a really important thing to Kyle and Garry

0:14:10 > 0:14:12is that they can see the kids a lot of the time

0:14:12 > 0:14:14and monitor how they are, so having this glass courtyard

0:14:14 > 0:14:16in the centre of the house means you've got sightlines

0:14:16 > 0:14:18from bedroom to bedroom, from living room to bedroom,

0:14:18 > 0:14:20so they can always see what the kids are up to,

0:14:20 > 0:14:22as well as just a nice safe place to play,

0:14:22 > 0:14:25if you don't want to take everybody outside.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28So, you haven't just made this up on the back of a fag packet.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30This has been planned and sorted through and...

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Yeah, and, I mean, this is really tough, right,

0:14:32 > 0:14:36doing a build from scratch. I can see, for the guys, it's a nightmare.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40But it means, from a design point of view, we can have our wish list.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43'As the panels fly up, there's one person

0:14:43 > 0:14:46'who hasn't even broken a sweat yet - old Billy No-Mates.'

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Bill, what are you up to?

0:14:48 > 0:14:51Well, as you see, I can't get in the building,

0:14:51 > 0:14:55I can't do any electrics, so I've got my grandson's Lego and voila.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58This is what we are building.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00This is like a scale model, mate.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03So, we've got the kitchen,

0:15:03 > 0:15:08- we've got the bathroom and this is an aprium.- Almost.- It's outside.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11If we had an ape in it, it would be an aprium. It's an atrium.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14- An atrium.- Yeah. - We've got an atrium here

0:15:14 > 0:15:16and I was going to put a tree in it

0:15:16 > 0:15:18but I think it'll take too much room up.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21It's fantastic, Bill. Alwyn, come and have a look at this.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27- How long did it take?- Look!- Took me about three and a half hours.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's exactly what you're building to scale.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34- Isn't that incredible?- Yeah. - You've even put your roof lights in.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- I like that. That's a nice touch. - Yeah, that's our polar sanels.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40- Polar sanels?- Polar sanels.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44Solar panels! Polar sanels...

0:15:44 > 0:15:46These teeth - I've got to get rid of them!

0:15:46 > 0:15:49'Second languages are all well and good, Billy,

0:15:49 > 0:15:51'if you've got the hang of the first one!'

0:15:51 > 0:15:53While he changes his teeth,

0:15:53 > 0:15:55the team are building the life-size version of his model,

0:15:55 > 0:15:56and they're almost as quick.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59That's a wall up already, look!

0:15:59 > 0:16:00Whilst I was looking around,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03they've actually got a whole side of the building up in one go.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05You've got to love timber frame, haven't you?

0:16:08 > 0:16:09'As each piece slides into place,

0:16:09 > 0:16:12'the pressure's on to get the floor fixed.'

0:16:12 > 0:16:15So, how much of a mess did we make of the underfloor heating?

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Er, just a little bit.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22So, basically, we managed to cut through everything, did we?

0:16:22 > 0:16:27- Um...yeah, pretty much. It's repairable though.- It is?- Oh, yeah.

0:16:27 > 0:16:28We'll fix it.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31'With the underfloor under control,

0:16:31 > 0:16:34'the internal walls can up apace and, despite the setbacks,

0:16:34 > 0:16:38'in less than a day, the entire wall structure is up.'

0:16:38 > 0:16:40I thought it might be nice for you

0:16:40 > 0:16:43to look at just how big this building is. Go take a look.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45'Space is what the family really needs

0:16:45 > 0:16:47'and that's exactly what we're giving them -

0:16:47 > 0:16:50'over 160 square metres of it.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51'All we need now is a roof,

0:16:51 > 0:16:54'which was originally scheduled to be going up tomorrow.'

0:16:54 > 0:16:59This is incredible! What do you think then?

0:16:59 > 0:17:01I am loving it!

0:17:01 > 0:17:05- It looks awesome, doesn't it?- Yes. - And now we're seeing rooms appear.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09How come you're so enthusiastic all the time because I go through,

0:17:09 > 0:17:11all of us go through pits and troughs?

0:17:11 > 0:17:14There's usually a sense of misery and distress and worry

0:17:14 > 0:17:16because it's all happening so fast.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19- Maybe it's just, like, new girl optimism.- Yeah.

0:17:19 > 0:17:20This is my first project

0:17:20 > 0:17:23and I am completely bowled over at the generosity.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26I call someone, ask for the moon on a stick

0:17:26 > 0:17:27and can I have it yesterday,

0:17:27 > 0:17:29and they go, "Yeah, we'd love to do that."

0:17:29 > 0:17:31And it blows my mind. I can't believe it.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34'Well, this is DIY SOS.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37'It's always astounding how trades go the extra mile.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40'This is quite simply awe-inspiring.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43'Then again, so is the family we're doing all this for.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47'One person who knows just how incredible this family is

0:17:47 > 0:17:49'is Jenny Whittle, the councillor who supported them

0:17:49 > 0:17:52'through the whole fostering and adoption process.'

0:17:52 > 0:17:55They don't see themselves as doing anything special

0:17:55 > 0:17:58or out of the ordinary but it is an extraordinary undertaking.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00They are superheroes.

0:18:00 > 0:18:04Garry is a headteacher of two primary schools in Kent.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06He's responsible for the education of 1,500 children.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09He comes home and then, with Kyle,

0:18:09 > 0:18:11looks after four children of his own.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14And Kyle is extraordinary as well.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17He does an extraordinary number of hospital stays,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19particularly with Curtis.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22He'll stay overnight in hospital when Curtis is staying there.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25He'll come back in the morning to make sure the other children

0:18:25 > 0:18:27have breakfast and get to school safely.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30It's very much a way of life for them and I never hear them complain.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34So, how difficult is it to get children with complex needs adopted?

0:18:34 > 0:18:36How many people are out there

0:18:36 > 0:18:38that will consider taking on that responsibility?

0:18:38 > 0:18:41I think all councils across the country struggle

0:18:41 > 0:18:45to find adopters to look after children with disabilities,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49because it almost comes with a label, but Garry and Kyle do it.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52They see the child, they don't see the label.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55And I think here, we've seen each of these four children

0:18:55 > 0:18:57have very much their own individual personalities,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59but they're just the most fabulous family

0:18:59 > 0:19:02and I've been really privileged to work with them over the years.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05For us, the work has only just begun.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09We're one day in and, whilst there's not been much action in the garden,

0:19:09 > 0:19:11for the first time ever, on the house,

0:19:11 > 0:19:13we may even be ahead of schedule.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17So, we've got to what would normally be the end of the day, but...

0:19:17 > 0:19:19DIGGER DRIVES AROUND NOISILY Do you mind?

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- I'm trying to do a piece to camera here.- All right, carry on.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26As you can see, we're still working and will be till a great deal later.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28Normally, at the end of the day, I take you around the building,

0:19:28 > 0:19:30but I don't want to do that because...

0:19:33 > 0:19:37..I want you see what it's like when we've done...

0:19:37 > 0:19:38That's it. I'm not...

0:19:38 > 0:19:42- Seriously, if you're not going to take this seriously...- Oh, sorry.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45See you in the morning.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52As you can see, it's a beautiful day and we're very happy

0:19:52 > 0:19:55because we set the timber frame people

0:19:55 > 0:19:58one and a half days to build a house.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00They've actually done it by the end of last night

0:20:00 > 0:20:03which means the batonners and roofers can get on straightaway.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06We should have this waterproof by the end of today. Fantastic!

0:20:06 > 0:20:09'With the shell up, Billy's now got some friends to play with.'

0:20:11 > 0:20:13We've got an army of lovely sparks.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Some are even lovelier than the others.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21And outside, we're at last getting plans together for the garden.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25So, looking out over what can only be described as a barren landscape,

0:20:25 > 0:20:29this is not a garden that fills you with excitement, really.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32I think, from my point of view, the worse it looks at the beginning

0:20:32 > 0:20:35is better for me, cos it makes me look cleverer at the end, you see.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38- That's very good. I like that.- So...

0:20:38 > 0:20:39What are you actually going to try and do with it?

0:20:39 > 0:20:42It's been a bit tricky because it was thrown on me

0:20:42 > 0:20:45three days ago that there's a big water treatment plant

0:20:45 > 0:20:48going right in the middle of my lovely garden.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51A sewage plant. So, we're digging a hole there,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54which is going to be three metres by three metres wide

0:20:54 > 0:20:55and about eight metres deep.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58So, we're going to somehow make the best of it.

0:20:58 > 0:21:02Maybe we can cover the lid with another lid and put pots on it.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05- I'm not sure yet. But the idea is we'll have a nice patio.- Yeah.

0:21:05 > 0:21:09We'd like to create a bit of a cosy area so they can sit in the sun.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11- The evening sun is here...- Yeah. - ..which makes sense.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13And it's got to be child-friendly

0:21:13 > 0:21:15and make a special place for them to be.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17I would love to be able to build them some raised beds,

0:21:17 > 0:21:19- some sleeper raised beds.- Yes. - They're really easy to plant.- Yeah.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21Looks lovely.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Whether it's the calling to help a family in need

0:21:24 > 0:21:26or just the smell of bacon sandwiches,

0:21:26 > 0:21:28the builders keep on coming.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31There's even the roofer's dog getting in on the action.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34# Up on the woof. #

0:21:35 > 0:21:38- How we doing?- I'm very well. You?- Very good, thank you.

0:21:38 > 0:21:39- Good, good.- You're on slate.- Yeah.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41What are we looking for timescale here?

0:21:41 > 0:21:43We're going to go for Friday night as a plan.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46'That's just two days to slate the whole roof!

0:21:46 > 0:21:48'It's definitely a tall order.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52'Inside, the electricians are making headway on the wiring.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55'One of them, Chris, has his own reasons for being here.'

0:21:56 > 0:21:58- Me and my other half are foster carers as well.- OK.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- So that was the reason we got involved.- That's amazing.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03- How many kids have you helped? - Just one.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05We've got one little boy that we've had from start to now

0:22:05 > 0:22:09and we've got permanence, so he'll be with us till he's 18.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11- That's brilliant.- Till the end. - That's so good.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13You've got some idea of what these guys are doing

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- and why they're doing it and what it takes.- I take my hat off to them.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18What we do is hard work but I can't imagine what they go through.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Must be horrific sometimes, but it's very worthwhile,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- very rewarding.- Yeah, and I think you and the guys here

0:22:24 > 0:22:26are making a real difference in these kids' lives

0:22:26 > 0:22:28because what would happen to them

0:22:28 > 0:22:32- if there weren't people like you prepared to take them on.- Very true.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35For Garry and Kyle, fostering was a route to adopting

0:22:35 > 0:22:37and a way to build the family they wanted.

0:22:39 > 0:22:40You have chosen to take on something

0:22:40 > 0:22:43that most of us wouldn't even consider doing.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45To take on adopting children is one thing.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48To take on children who probably won't be adopted

0:22:48 > 0:22:50because of the difficulties that they face

0:22:50 > 0:22:52is an extraordinary undertaking.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54It's like superhero status.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56And that's what we don't get, I think.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00We don't see that superhero status bit.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02- Do you not at all, not even a little bit?- No, really not.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06We weren't asked to adopt these kids. We did it ourselves.

0:23:06 > 0:23:07It was our choice.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11We met Haydn and just fell in love with him and HAD to adopt him.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13We were Haydn's...

0:23:15 > 0:23:18..maybe fourth sets of carers when he was six

0:23:18 > 0:23:20and we didn't want to let him down again,

0:23:20 > 0:23:22so we had to really think carefully.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26And we had to think more carefully with Curtis.

0:23:26 > 0:23:31The thing with Curtis was we could have fostered him or adopted him

0:23:31 > 0:23:32and he could have died within weeks.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36But we fell in love with him really quickly.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37We had to adopt him as well.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39As fosterers, you're not very effective

0:23:39 > 0:23:41- cos you keep adopting the children. - No!

0:23:41 > 0:23:45When the girls came along, our first thought was,

0:23:45 > 0:23:47"No, we'll foster these until they find a beautiful home

0:23:47 > 0:23:50"and they'll go off and skip into the sunset

0:23:50 > 0:23:51"and we'll have done our job."

0:23:51 > 0:23:54But then it came clearer, as time went on,

0:23:54 > 0:23:58that there may have been a plan to adopt the girls separately.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01- There'd be the risk that they'd be split up.- Yeah.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03It's actually quite a ruthless market, you know.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06Almost a catalogue. "I like that one. I'd like to see that one.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10"I'd like that one. Mm, probably won't have that one. Got Down's.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12"We don't want to be lumped with a Down's child."

0:24:12 > 0:24:15And Bella could have ended up in care for the rest of her life.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17And no matter what our own circumstances,

0:24:17 > 0:24:19we could not have let them move forward

0:24:19 > 0:24:21with being adopted separately.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26One of the other things I was going to talk to you about

0:24:26 > 0:24:27is your other half, Kyle.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30He's the one, actually, who holds all the family together.

0:24:30 > 0:24:35Cos I go off to work and I have eight hours away from it all

0:24:35 > 0:24:39and he's the one who's, literally, on a daily basis,

0:24:39 > 0:24:41keeping Curtis alive,

0:24:41 > 0:24:45making sure that Haydn's doing what he should be doing.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48And I think, if anyone's a hero, it's him, really.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Neither Kyle nor Garry HAD to prevent

0:24:51 > 0:24:54two sisters from being split up,

0:24:54 > 0:24:57nor did they HAVE to take on children with such difficult needs,

0:24:57 > 0:25:02but they did and that's why we HAVE to build them a fitting home.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05- So, Julian's lunch has arrived. - That's our treatment plant.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07There we go. Look at that.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11THEY SING THE THUNDERBIRDS THEME TUNE

0:25:13 > 0:25:15One of the joys of being in the sticks

0:25:15 > 0:25:17is not being on mains drainage.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20This state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant

0:25:20 > 0:25:22replaces their traditional tank

0:25:22 > 0:25:26and will save the family thousands of pounds in emptying costs.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28We've just got to get it in the garden,

0:25:28 > 0:25:32and with a big house and scaffold in the way, radical action is needed.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36- IN EXAGGERATED IRISH ACCENT: - Here we are today,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39in the middle of a field and we're going to cut some lovely trees down.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Some of the nicest trees in the country you ever saw,

0:25:41 > 0:25:43but I don't really care.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45I've got to get an eight-tonne digger into the back field

0:25:45 > 0:25:47but I'm really excited about it.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50But the lads have turned up in their big jeep with really sharp chainsaws

0:25:50 > 0:25:53and they're going to cut the trees down. Oh, it's grand now.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55I'm off. I'm off to see my mammy.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57He's bonkers!

0:25:57 > 0:25:59Incredibly, the neighbours have given us permission

0:25:59 > 0:26:02to take these trees down and access through their back garden.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04Try not to squash these plants here.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Well, to make an omelette, you have to break a few eggs.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11Here's a hole in next door's fence which we made

0:26:11 > 0:26:14and a very large bin coming through it.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18It may not be very glamorous, sewage, but it's really important

0:26:18 > 0:26:21and you'd be really upset if you didn't have it.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28- It's quite a big thing just outside your back door, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31So, we're going to try and build some kind of feature

0:26:31 > 0:26:33- around the top of that... - I assume so, yes.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35..which we can then lift out, like pots,

0:26:35 > 0:26:38you can lift out to get access to it and then... OK.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41'This is a big obstacle in a huge garden.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44'And though there's a plan to cover it up

0:26:44 > 0:26:46'and build a load of raised beds,

0:26:46 > 0:26:50'it all relies on one thing - good old-fashioned railway sleepers.'

0:26:50 > 0:26:52There's a mass shortage of railway sleepers.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56- Well, it's big wood, when you think about it.- Big wood and also...

0:26:56 > 0:26:59You have to take down chunky trees to get a sleeper out of them,

0:26:59 > 0:27:01- don't you?- Hello, Ma.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04'Hello, son.'

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Ma, is there any chance you can try and source us

0:27:07 > 0:27:08about 100 railway sleepers?

0:27:10 > 0:27:12'100?'

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Yeah, can you have a wee look into that,

0:27:14 > 0:27:18- if you have any contacts in that world?- 'Yeah, I'll give it a go.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20'Are you coming home for your tea tonight?'

0:27:21 > 0:27:23I'm on camera, Ma. You can't be asking me things like that.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26Yes, I'll be home at about... What time are you making it at?

0:27:27 > 0:27:31- 'Half seven.'- I'll be home at quarter past seven, all right?

0:27:31 > 0:27:32'Love you, son.'

0:27:34 > 0:27:36"Love you, son." Well, someone does. That's nice.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38- What did she say?- Love you, son. - Did she?

0:27:40 > 0:27:46Ah, he's gone all emotional. Ah! Oh, mate. Oh, I know, I know.

0:27:46 > 0:27:50The idea that anyone loves you is as surprising to us as it is to you.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54In the house, however, there is love and materials aplenty.

0:27:54 > 0:27:59These are super guys. They're great. Working WITH us and not against us.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02- Isn't that right?- Out of my way, Billy, so I can get on!

0:28:02 > 0:28:04THEY LAUGH

0:28:04 > 0:28:07The plasterers have got their work cut out to get this place boarded,

0:28:07 > 0:28:09ready for the kitchen to go in.

0:28:09 > 0:28:13All right, tiger? Good man, good man.

0:28:13 > 0:28:15Love it, love it, love it.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18They're fitting windows outside and in the courtyard.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21- Ah... - HIS VOICE QUIETENS AS DOOR CLOSES

0:28:21 > 0:28:24- Ah...- All of them come fully tested for soundproofing.

0:28:24 > 0:28:28And as Mark's ma has come good with the sleepers, even Jules is happy.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31It's just nice to see it happening.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33This is our hardcore base. This is our patio.

0:28:33 > 0:28:38We're going to build a seating arrangement around the tank.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41Planter that side, planter that side.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44I feel a lot happier now things are happening,

0:28:44 > 0:28:47so I apologise for being a little bit grumpy.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50I might come across a little bit grumpy. I'm sorry about that.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53But, no, I'm happy. Happy Jules.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55You're not forgiven.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58But as we approach the halfway stage, on the roof,

0:28:58 > 0:29:00things have come to a grinding halt.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03What's happening with the flashing kit for the Veluxes, do you know?

0:29:03 > 0:29:05And with the scaffold booked to come down in the morning,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07they have to meet their deadline.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10So, we've got a Velux window to fit next to the courtyard.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12The flashing kit wasn't in the packaging,

0:29:12 > 0:29:16so we're waiting now for that flashing kit before we can get on,

0:29:16 > 0:29:20so it's holding up the roofers now and the solar installation.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23Last I heard, it was Scotland, in Fife.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28- Yeah, so, hopefully, it's on its way.- Well, at least it's close!

0:29:28 > 0:29:30Unfortunately, when you're building at speed,

0:29:30 > 0:29:32the smallest setback can escalate,

0:29:32 > 0:29:34especially when things don't get passed on,

0:29:34 > 0:29:38and the next morning, there's one crucial call we should have made.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Scaffolders have turned up to take the scaffold down today.

0:29:43 > 0:29:46There's absolutely no way it can come down.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48They're not going to be happy.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53Oh, my God, what am I going to do?

0:29:53 > 0:29:55How am I going to get out of this one?

0:29:55 > 0:29:58I believe we're about to witness what's known as the "blarney".

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Watch and learn.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02Here's our artists.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Here it comes. Listen, listen.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06- How you doing, Mark?- Not very well.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09- What's happening? - I've just been up on the roof.- And?

0:30:09 > 0:30:12Chatting to the roofers and they're not going to be finished

0:30:12 > 0:30:15till Monday. Come and have a look. Keep calm.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18You're a professional climbing tubular technician.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21You need to keep... You get a lot of grief, don't you?

0:30:21 > 0:30:23You pull up in the road, park up the road,

0:30:23 > 0:30:25everybody wants you to move, get out of the way.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28- They treat you like rubbish, don't they?- Yeah, they do.

0:30:28 > 0:30:29All the time, yeah.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32We respect what you've done and we think you've done a brilliant job

0:30:32 > 0:30:35and can you please help us out with this here?

0:30:35 > 0:30:37He is laying it on a bit thick, isn't he, with the Irish charm?

0:30:37 > 0:30:39But these guys don't look impressed.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- You're not done here, lads?- No.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45We ain't going to be ready until Monday dinnertime-ish.

0:30:45 > 0:30:50- Can we please push it to Monday? - I'd have to make a phone call.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52We've got a big demolition job in Camberwell.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54They've got half a million pounds-worth of machinery,

0:30:54 > 0:30:56sitting there, waiting to go.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00The roofers haven't finished and they're asking,

0:31:00 > 0:31:04"Can we take this scaffolding down Monday?"

0:31:04 > 0:31:08Luckily, it's not just the Irishman. We've got a man on the inside.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11My mum looks after Curtis, five-year-old Curtis,

0:31:11 > 0:31:14and she told me about DIY was coming in.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17- We asked a mate, boss Brian.- Yeah.

0:31:17 > 0:31:22So, here I am today. I'm scaffolding for DIY SOS.

0:31:22 > 0:31:23What do you think then?

0:31:23 > 0:31:28To do something so close to home and do something for a family

0:31:28 > 0:31:32that means the world to them, it's a privilege, so here we go.

0:31:34 > 0:31:35Yeah, you sure?

0:31:36 > 0:31:38All right then, mate.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44- Yes!- We can do it Monday for you.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Come here!

0:31:48 > 0:31:50Ooh, I love you!

0:31:50 > 0:31:52See, "Keep calm, I'm a professional..."

0:31:52 > 0:31:55See, everybody thinks scaffolders are horrible, grumpy,

0:31:55 > 0:31:58park in the middle of the road, awful people. They're lovely!

0:31:58 > 0:32:01- They sorted us out! Thank you, boys!- No worries.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04The scaffold is essential for the roofers to finish

0:32:04 > 0:32:06and also for the carpenters to get going on cladding

0:32:06 > 0:32:08the outside of the house

0:32:08 > 0:32:12with 1,600 linear metres of this elegant pre-stained larch,

0:32:12 > 0:32:15calculated to fit the house exactly.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20I'm just nervous because the cutting list that's been supplied here

0:32:20 > 0:32:24is so tight that we don't know how much wastage we've got.

0:32:24 > 0:32:27If we do balls it up, we run out of wood.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29With the clock ticking on the scaffold,

0:32:29 > 0:32:32there's added pressure to get it right.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34We get the first piece right,

0:32:34 > 0:32:38then everything should run nicely off of that.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41But up above, there's good news. The roofers are back in action.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44This was the piece that held everything up,

0:32:44 > 0:32:47sitting on the outside in the middle of these windows.

0:32:47 > 0:32:51Been a bit of pressure, pushing things on, but we'll get there.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53Finishing the roof will make the building watertight.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55So will the cladding,

0:32:55 > 0:32:58which Mark's crack team of chippies are on the case with.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00My boy.

0:33:00 > 0:33:03And with the kitchen going in, a bit of paint on the walls,

0:33:03 > 0:33:06and even some tiling, everyone's pulling together to catch up.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09They've all got different reasons for being here.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11It's giving something back.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14People say communities are dead - clearly not. It's a great feeling.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17Unless you've done it, you can't describe the atmosphere here.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19It's brilliant. Everyone's in it for the same reason

0:33:19 > 0:33:22and I'm definitely going to come and do it again.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24I've just turned up and started doing something.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27- You've just turned up?- Just turned up.- Off the street?- Literally.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29Walked past, seen people here, grabbed one of these, cracked on.

0:33:29 > 0:33:33- I've always wanted to meet you cos I'm a big fan.- Are you really?- No.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36- At least he's honest.- Take it away, Jay, last tile on the roof.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39- ALL:- Three, two, one.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD

0:33:42 > 0:33:46And as the joiners finish off the last of the cladding,

0:33:46 > 0:33:48we can finally let the scaffold go.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50This is how tight a big build is.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53You've got the scaffolders taking the scaffolding down

0:33:53 > 0:33:55and right behind them are the joiners fitting the cladding.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57It's literally like that.

0:33:57 > 0:34:00As the scaffold comes down, for the first time,

0:34:00 > 0:34:03we can see the outside in all its glory.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06And with the inside to think about, Haydn and Phoebe have demanded

0:34:06 > 0:34:09a high-level discussion with the designer.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11- Well, I like red.- What do you think of those two together?

0:34:11 > 0:34:16I like red and purple and pink and orange and purple.

0:34:16 > 0:34:20- So you like bright colours.- Yeah! - You are my dream client.

0:34:20 > 0:34:25You really are. I don't do white or beige.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29- What do you think little Bella's going to like?- Princesses.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32- Princesses.- Princesses, handbags...

0:34:32 > 0:34:36- Princesses, castle, palace, all of that.- Yeah.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39- Quite grand, would she like that? And theatrical.- Yeah.- Got it.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41Good wish list.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43The kids have clearly thought about this,

0:34:43 > 0:34:46but it's not just the decor we can help with.

0:34:46 > 0:34:48There are the everyday practical needs.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52With just two days left, we're concentrating on access.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55- Morning.- Don't let him in!

0:34:55 > 0:34:57In the garden, we're laying a gravel patio,

0:34:57 > 0:35:01using a special honeycomb grid that will enable wheelchairs to cross.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03And there's one builder who knows

0:35:03 > 0:35:06just how important the garden is to them.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09- I didn't realise...- How are you? - Hello, Nick.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12- I didn't realise you were Kyle's brother.- Yeah.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14- So, what do you reckon? - Love it. It's great.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- Kind of puts the pressure on for you a bit, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20Cos if you've got somebody who actually knows the family

0:35:20 > 0:35:22- next to you whilst you're... - Been a nightmare.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26We've been having arm wrestles to decide curvy or straight lines.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29- Curvy.- I think he's winning. - Curvy.- But he's not.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32To a certain extent, we're having to cut our cloth to what we can get.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35We were going to go with that gravel and hexagonal stuff all the way up.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37- Yeah.- Can't get enough of it.

0:35:37 > 0:35:38There's not enough of it in the country.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40Can't get hold of it in time.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42There's enough to do the back there, which is nice,

0:35:42 > 0:35:44- then I think we're going to have to go tarmac up this.- Yeah.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46And tarmac up that,

0:35:46 > 0:35:48just to give them a surface to roll the wheelchairs on.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51They can, but if we can finish it off and get some tarmac in,

0:35:51 > 0:35:53pull in on all our old friends from the last four or five years

0:35:53 > 0:35:55and seeing if anyone can come up.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59Finding 70 tonnes of tarmac at a day's notice could be the one thing

0:35:59 > 0:36:03that slips us up, but at least there's plenty going on inside.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06We've got new floors in these rooms here,

0:36:06 > 0:36:08decorators working all the way through the hall.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11The guys are building a new studwork cabinet in here

0:36:11 > 0:36:13and getting the meter box put in, which is nice.

0:36:13 > 0:36:16- You went in on that one? - Testing.- Testing, lovely.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19Billy's going through here doing all the second fixing,

0:36:19 > 0:36:20getting all the lights in position.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23This here has to be filled up this afternoon,

0:36:23 > 0:36:25so we've got to get this filled up with clean chippings.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28Another room getting decorated, and all the hoists are going in there.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31Back down in here, the guys have got the kitchen in here

0:36:31 > 0:36:33and we've floored up to this section.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36And then out there is the land of Julian.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41OK, so I'm not really sure what's happening out there.

0:36:41 > 0:36:45Can you keep the dust down? How are you supposed to drink tea

0:36:45 > 0:36:47and eat scones with all that dust around?

0:36:47 > 0:36:50Well, you can take the boys out of Devon

0:36:50 > 0:36:54but you can't take Devon out of the boys. Cream tea for Jules.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56For everyone else, it's builders all round,

0:36:56 > 0:36:59served lovingly by the neighbours,

0:36:59 > 0:37:02who have bent over backwards all through this build.

0:37:02 > 0:37:06- Morning.- How may teas did you do? - We just had a count-up.

0:37:06 > 0:37:091,530.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11NICK LAUGHS

0:37:11 > 0:37:13We haven't got anything else to do, you see.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16- That's a lot of tea-making.- Yes.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19It just seems everybody wants to help this family.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22Even the kids' nursery workers have turned up.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24It's not just great, what everybody's doing,

0:37:24 > 0:37:26but because they're such an inspirational family,

0:37:26 > 0:37:29it's brilliant. The way they live their lives...

0:37:29 > 0:37:31Looking after children.

0:37:31 > 0:37:35The way they are, their personalities, their nature.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38- They're so much fun. They're such a fun family.- They are.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41It's obvious Team Ratcliffe is much loved around here.

0:37:41 > 0:37:46Kyle is the stay-at-home dad who not only holds the family together

0:37:46 > 0:37:50but also, as far as young Curtis is concerned, keeps them alive.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54It must be difficult to look forward

0:37:54 > 0:37:56and see what the future holds for you.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59Do you ever do that or do you just try to live in the present?

0:37:59 > 0:38:05Er, we know that Curtis has a life-limiting condition.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07- Mm.- He shouldn't be here now,

0:38:07 > 0:38:10cos he gets chest infections which turn into pneumonia

0:38:10 > 0:38:16and then he can be fine one minute, then six, seven, eight hours later,

0:38:16 > 0:38:18he can be in a high-dependency unit

0:38:18 > 0:38:20with machines doing his breathing for him

0:38:20 > 0:38:22and us getting a phone call, saying,

0:38:22 > 0:38:25"You need to come in and say goodbyes".

0:38:25 > 0:38:27- We've had that twice.- Wow.

0:38:27 > 0:38:32And that's hard cos it's a case of, you know,

0:38:32 > 0:38:35you don't ever think you're going to be in that position

0:38:35 > 0:38:38with your four or your five-year-old.

0:38:38 > 0:38:43But normality for the kids at home has to continue.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45The kids never know that we're worried.

0:38:46 > 0:38:51So, you know, our kids are never going to grow up thinking

0:38:51 > 0:38:54that we were ever worried about anything.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57- We may be.- Yeah. - But they're not going to see that.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00So, you have been worried, you just haven't been showing it.

0:39:00 > 0:39:01'Yeah, yeah.'

0:39:01 > 0:39:03Just cough.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06For those builders that have turned up and given their time,

0:39:06 > 0:39:09what will they not realise that they're doing for you?

0:39:09 > 0:39:10The house, as it stayed...

0:39:12 > 0:39:17..it wouldn't be big enough for five adults, six adults to live in it.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20And it would mean that we'd have to look for somewhere

0:39:20 > 0:39:22for Isobella to live as an adult

0:39:22 > 0:39:25and for Curtis to carry on growing as a young man, the same as Haydn.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29So, this isn't just instantly going to help,

0:39:29 > 0:39:35this is going to be helping for years into their adulthood.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39This is actually going to keep the family together.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41How many builders do you think there's going to be?

0:39:41 > 0:39:45I think there's going to be hundreds of the builders.

0:39:45 > 0:39:49- That's lots of cups of tea.- Yeah. - Yeah.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52- And cake.- Yeah, tea and cake.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55- Yeah.- Yeah, it's a lot of tea and cake, it really is.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58Whether it's keeping them together in the future

0:39:58 > 0:40:01or simply keeping them alive, it's impossible to overstate

0:40:01 > 0:40:05what difference this home will make to the family.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07As we come to the last day of the build,

0:40:07 > 0:40:08we're giving them all the help we can -

0:40:08 > 0:40:11from cameras for monitoring the children

0:40:11 > 0:40:14to a super-efficient high-tech ventilation system

0:40:14 > 0:40:17that will not only heat the air but purify it.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19So, this system that you've put in for us

0:40:19 > 0:40:21actually monitors the quality of the air, is that right?

0:40:21 > 0:40:24Yeah, working in harmony with these devices here.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26So, if there's poor pollution in here,

0:40:26 > 0:40:29whether that be carbon dioxide build-up, particulate matter,

0:40:29 > 0:40:32it will then make the unit circulate the air faster

0:40:32 > 0:40:34so it will change the air flow quicker.

0:40:34 > 0:40:36So, it's like a super-intelligent system talking to itself

0:40:36 > 0:40:38in all the different rooms all the time.

0:40:38 > 0:40:40Yeah, I think this is one of, if not,

0:40:40 > 0:40:42one of the first to work this way.

0:40:42 > 0:40:47- In the country?- I believe so, yeah. - Mate, we're on the money.

0:40:47 > 0:40:51We are cutting-edge. Very rare we can say that.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53This level of technology is a first for us

0:40:53 > 0:40:56but I'm not sure everyone appreciates it.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59Let's just see how many obstacles we can put in the way

0:40:59 > 0:41:01to plasterboard this room.

0:41:01 > 0:41:05Now, to be fair, on a scale of one to ten,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08they've maxed out, haven't they? It's a full ten.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12Yeah, they've really done well here, so if you don't mind,

0:41:12 > 0:41:17I need to get on and I don't feel like sharing the love.

0:41:17 > 0:41:18Bit tense.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21Jules is having a few technical issues too.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24Just literally cut out on us, stopped dead.

0:41:24 > 0:41:29So, we're going to have to ring the hire company and get them out.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31That's the last thing we needed today, weren't it?

0:41:31 > 0:41:35Got tarmac coming in a couple of hours,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39got to reduce all these levels... Oh, my...goodness!

0:41:39 > 0:41:42With Julian struggling to lower the levels on the driveway,

0:41:42 > 0:41:44we're relying on good old manual labour

0:41:44 > 0:41:46to raise the levels in the courtyard.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49You've got to be slightly worried when you see wheelbarrows of gear

0:41:49 > 0:41:51going through the middle of the house

0:41:51 > 0:41:53on the day you're supposed to be finished.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56'I can't help thinking it's all a bit last-minute.'

0:41:56 > 0:41:59You all right? You look nervous. What's the matter with you?

0:41:59 > 0:42:01I'm beginning to feel a little nervous

0:42:01 > 0:42:03- cos I've only got today left. - Yes, you have.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05And I'm seeing a building site.

0:42:05 > 0:42:09- But it's almost there, isn't it? - Yeah, I... This is the thing for me,

0:42:09 > 0:42:11I suppose. This is my first one.

0:42:11 > 0:42:13I've never ever seen an undertaking like it

0:42:13 > 0:42:15and in my professional head, I'm like,

0:42:15 > 0:42:17of course this isn't going to be ready by tonight.

0:42:17 > 0:42:22- They're still shovelling gravel in the middle of the house.- Yeah.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25But everybody I speak to, who's seasoned, like yourself,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28is telling me it's going to be fine, so I'm just going with that.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30It'll be fine. It'll be fine.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32What colour of brown would you describe that as?

0:42:32 > 0:42:35- That is dark cocoa.- That's not what the builders are calling it.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37- No.- They've given it an altogether different name.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41But there was a recent survey of which colour best promotes

0:42:41 > 0:42:44- healthy loving in the bedroom. - Healthy loving...

0:42:44 > 0:42:46Healthy loving in the bedroom,

0:42:46 > 0:42:49and brown came out as the top colour for romance.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52I don't think brown is something you should ever wear

0:42:52 > 0:42:54or ever use in a room. I just don't think it works.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57- What colour's your hat?- 'All right.'

0:42:57 > 0:42:59Yeah, but that's... 'She's got a point.'

0:42:59 > 0:43:02All right. 'But we don't have time to stand around arguing.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05'The digger man's turned up and it's game on for the driveway.'

0:43:05 > 0:43:09Right, digger's fixed. Well, temporarily fixed.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13OK, I don't want to worry you, but tarmac is here in half an hour.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18'Nobody seems to be listening to me. This is important!'

0:43:18 > 0:43:21Half an hour, this has to be prepped and everything off it -

0:43:21 > 0:43:23coats, everything off it, ready to go in half an hour.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26Inside, as the chippies and decorators pull out all the stops

0:43:26 > 0:43:28to get this house looking like a home...

0:43:28 > 0:43:31- All right, girls, you can come out now.- It's a bit warm in there.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34..it seems like there might be half a chance of finishing.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37The inside of the house, amazing.

0:43:37 > 0:43:40The outside is still a bit Glastonbury.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44Outside, all we can do is prepare for Tarmacgeddon.

0:43:44 > 0:43:48And true to their word, the boys from the black stuff have arrived.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51What's he doing in the front?

0:43:56 > 0:44:0070 tonnes of asphalt.

0:44:02 > 0:44:03We're going to have a driveway.

0:44:06 > 0:44:10- You know the family's coming back tomorrow?- Yeah, it'll still be warm.

0:44:10 > 0:44:13Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, and it'll still be warm!

0:44:13 > 0:44:16We won't need to heat the house, at least, will we?

0:44:16 > 0:44:19With less than 24 hours' notice, these guys are onsite

0:44:19 > 0:44:22with 450 square metres of the black stuff. Not bad.

0:44:22 > 0:44:26As everyone pulls together for a last push into the final night,

0:44:26 > 0:44:30there is an overwhelming and fully-deserved sense of pride.

0:44:30 > 0:44:34In nine days, we've achieved nine months' worth of work, easily.

0:44:34 > 0:44:38It's just phenomenal. People coming together to do this is amazing.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41Inside, there's some last-minute touches too.

0:44:41 > 0:44:44Oh, my goodness! How fabulous is this?

0:44:44 > 0:44:49This wallpaper, it's rather special, so they can't mess it up.

0:44:49 > 0:44:52- It's been made to order. - At £1,400 a roll,

0:44:52 > 0:44:56this has to be the most decadent donated decor in DIY history.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58I'm just glad I'm not hanging it.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01I'm getting all... Look at this. Look, I'm getting all hot already.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06I know, I can feel the stress in here.

0:45:07 > 0:45:12As night closes in, there are over 100 people on site, finishing off.

0:45:12 > 0:45:17But we won't really see how we've done until the morning.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25A few weeks ago, the Ratcliffes were squeezed

0:45:25 > 0:45:27into a three-bedroom bungalow

0:45:27 > 0:45:30that was bursting with all their equipment and supplies.

0:45:30 > 0:45:31With Bella in the boot room

0:45:31 > 0:45:33and Curtis forced to sleep in the living room,

0:45:33 > 0:45:35their only escape was the garden.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38But in these conditions, keeping them healthy

0:45:38 > 0:45:40and together as a family was a challenge

0:45:40 > 0:45:42even Team Ratcliffe would struggle with.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48We adopted four vulnerable kids because we wanted to give them

0:45:48 > 0:45:52the best life we possibly can and we're not doing that at the moment.

0:45:52 > 0:45:56So, we built them a new home.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58Clad in sleek black larch

0:45:58 > 0:46:01and set around an incredible internal courtyard,

0:46:01 > 0:46:06this home will give the family all the space, light and access

0:46:06 > 0:46:07they could ever wish for.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10A far cry from the living room they shared with Curtis,

0:46:10 > 0:46:14their new family room will allow them to spend time together,

0:46:14 > 0:46:15especially at mealtimes.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18And everyone gets their own bedroom.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20Bella's room is fit for a fairy princess

0:46:20 > 0:46:22and Phoebe is going to take up residence

0:46:22 > 0:46:25with the woodland animals in an enchanted forest,

0:46:25 > 0:46:28and they both get to share their own bathroom.

0:46:28 > 0:46:32Haydn will no longer be surrounded by equipment.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35Now it's neon and superheroes in his new bedroom,

0:46:35 > 0:46:37built for easy access -

0:46:37 > 0:46:40the independence he'll need as a teenager.

0:46:40 > 0:46:43Curtis has his own room for the first time in his life.

0:46:43 > 0:46:46He'll be surrounded by colour and lights for stimulation

0:46:46 > 0:46:50and the latest, potentially life-saving equipment.

0:46:50 > 0:46:54He'll also get to share a huge bathroom with his brother.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58And Garry and Kyle say goodbye to their nappy-filled bedroom.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00They have a sanctuary for themselves,

0:47:00 > 0:47:03a bit of long-overdue luxury they deserve.

0:47:03 > 0:47:07No more narrow corridors and doors to run into,

0:47:07 > 0:47:10this is a house for the kids to run free.

0:47:12 > 0:47:16And outside, the barren garden, that was their only escape,

0:47:16 > 0:47:21is now a garden to love and tend and build memories in.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25We've never built a house from the ground up before.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29Everybody worked so hard, but it's not a bad effort, is it,

0:47:29 > 0:47:31for just nine days?

0:47:34 > 0:47:37We hope you like what we've built.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41This is your new home.

0:47:43 > 0:47:44Three, two, one, open your eyes.

0:47:47 > 0:47:53- Whoa.- Pretty, isn't it?- Wow. - It's absolutely stunning!

0:47:53 > 0:47:56I expected to just see our old bungalow,

0:47:56 > 0:47:59but a new version of it, and it's totally different.

0:47:59 > 0:48:04- It's gorgeous!- Yeah.- Wait till you see the inside.- Yes!- Please.- Yeah?

0:48:05 > 0:48:07Welcome to the interior of your new home.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Whoa...

0:48:12 > 0:48:15THEY LAUGH

0:48:15 > 0:48:18It's absolutely beautiful! Our kids are going to love this, aren't they?

0:48:18 > 0:48:21- We can actually sit around a dining table.- Yes, you can.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23Everything is about access.

0:48:25 > 0:48:26That's just beautiful.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29The kids can actually play out there, in a safe area

0:48:29 > 0:48:31where you can keep an eye on them, to get out in some fresh air.

0:48:31 > 0:48:33Everything's been thought of.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35My feet are really warm.

0:48:35 > 0:48:38Right, so underfloor heating throughout the house.

0:48:38 > 0:48:39Also, more importantly for you,

0:48:39 > 0:48:42there's an air treatment unit in here,

0:48:42 > 0:48:45so it has sensors in the major rooms, like Curtis's room,

0:48:45 > 0:48:47so you can get perfect clean air,

0:48:47 > 0:48:49which is critical for Curtis's health.

0:48:49 > 0:48:52Yeah, he just gets chest infection after chest infection

0:48:52 > 0:48:56and the bugs and, you know...

0:48:56 > 0:48:59- That's... - That's amazing for him, isn't it?

0:49:02 > 0:49:07I just can't believe the detail and the thought that's gone into...

0:49:09 > 0:49:11- ..actually our kids.- I know.

0:49:11 > 0:49:15- Because it's all just about our kids, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18One of the other things that we've done is we've made sure

0:49:18 > 0:49:21that there are cameras and there are cameras in the kids' rooms too.

0:49:21 > 0:49:24- Ah... - So, you can link up to your tablet

0:49:24 > 0:49:27- and you can always see them wherever they are.- Yeah.

0:49:28 > 0:49:29Sorry.

0:49:29 > 0:49:31Oh...

0:49:32 > 0:49:36It's everything. It's literally everything.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39You've thought of everything.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41It's enabling our kids to be more than they are...

0:49:43 > 0:49:45..which is really important.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54- It's great.- Do you want to see the rest of it?- Yeah.

0:49:54 > 0:49:57- I'll try not to cry about the rest of it.- Come on.

0:50:00 > 0:50:02Ooh!

0:50:02 > 0:50:05THEY LAUGH

0:50:05 > 0:50:08- Look at the lights!- Oh!

0:50:09 > 0:50:12Look at his bed!

0:50:12 > 0:50:15You know he lives in our living room. Now he's got his own space.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18- You all right?- Mm-hmm. - Your turn now.

0:50:18 > 0:50:24No, no, I just... He's never had anything of his own, has he?

0:50:24 > 0:50:26- Oh, God, I'm going again. - The thought of...

0:50:28 > 0:50:30Oh!

0:50:30 > 0:50:33Probably one of the most important things of all is, obviously,

0:50:33 > 0:50:37the hoist system. The hoist system is really, really important

0:50:37 > 0:50:38and really, really clever.

0:50:40 > 0:50:44- So, this connects up in here. - Oh, come on.

0:50:50 > 0:50:55It is just a stunning, beautiful bathroom.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57There's a fully automated toilet over there as well

0:50:57 > 0:50:59that will do washing and drying,

0:50:59 > 0:51:01so for someone like Haydn, as a teenage boy,

0:51:01 > 0:51:03it gives him independence and a bit of dignity,

0:51:03 > 0:51:06- whilst he's doing that, as he's getting older.- Perfect!

0:51:06 > 0:51:10OK, so, one of the things that's nice about this as well...

0:51:12 > 0:51:14You'll notice the track goes that way as well.

0:51:16 > 0:51:19THEY GASP

0:51:19 > 0:51:21Oh, my God!

0:51:23 > 0:51:28Oh, Haydn is going to absolutely love this, isn't he?

0:51:28 > 0:51:30- He's going to burst. - He is going to burst.

0:51:30 > 0:51:33- Very fond of his superheroes, right? - He loves superheroes!

0:51:33 > 0:51:35Right, well, that would have been it,

0:51:35 > 0:51:38if you had actually stuck at two boys, but you didn't, did you?

0:51:38 > 0:51:40- Yeah, no.- No.

0:51:47 > 0:51:53- Bella was in that boot room.- Yeah. - She's going to go absolutely...

0:51:53 > 0:51:56Princess's bedroom, isn't it? It's a palace.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58Oh, she's going to absolutely love it!

0:52:00 > 0:52:04- Ah.- Oh!- Phoebe's room!

0:52:04 > 0:52:06THEY LAUGH

0:52:06 > 0:52:08She's going to absolutely love this bed!

0:52:08 > 0:52:10She's got her own house.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13It's really important for Phoebe to have her own space

0:52:13 > 0:52:16because she's surrounded with kids

0:52:16 > 0:52:19that are often sick, poorly, you know,

0:52:19 > 0:52:22can't do everything that she can do right now.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27- And sometimes she needs that space, doesn't she?- Yeah.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30Where are you two going to be? Haven't done that yet.

0:52:33 > 0:52:35- OK.- Come on, this way.

0:52:37 > 0:52:39Oh, my goodness me!

0:52:39 > 0:52:42- I can't believe it's our home.- No.

0:52:42 > 0:52:47I absolutely love it! This is just stunning!

0:57:06 > 0:57:09We just needed to find the right family to do it for.

0:57:14 > 0:57:17Well, that was the perfect opportunity, wasn't it?
