0:02:05 > 0:02:09But the unexpected happened, and in 2004 Sue gave birth.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13We had Matthew when I was 36.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15It was just total shock.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17- Yeah, it was.- That was my reaction.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21Being a parent, it's everything.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26Matthew was a really kind little boy.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29Very popular boy at school.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Matthew does like Doctor Who.
0:02:51 > 0:02:54And we did get quite a few Daleks
0:02:54 > 0:02:57that we started to go through and repair.
0:02:57 > 0:03:02I'd be in the kitchen cooking and numerous Daleks will then come in
0:03:02 > 0:03:05and just say, "Stop what you're doing or I'll exterminate you."
0:03:05 > 0:03:08I'd just say, "Go on, then," and they do.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13In 2015, the family went on holiday to Devon.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15But Matthew didn't seem himself.
0:03:18 > 0:03:23I saw Matthew starting to sort of struggle and stumble a bit.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26He'd stand up and he'd just fall down.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29He'd lose his balance.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32I phoned the doctors and booked an appointment.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34They said they were going to do some tests,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36but they were going to keep him in.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38And he never went home.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Matthew was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.
0:03:43 > 0:03:47Scans showed multiple cancerous tumours in his brain
0:03:47 > 0:03:49and all the way down his spine.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54They were really, really dark days.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Matthew said to me, "Mum, I've got a tumour."
0:03:59 > 0:04:03And I said, "Yeah." And he said, "Am I going to die?"
0:04:03 > 0:04:05And I said, "No."
0:04:08 > 0:04:10I said, "No, it's not going to kill you."
0:04:14 > 0:04:17But you have to keep going for them,
0:04:17 > 0:04:19you know, you can't show them that you're frightened.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21You have to be strong.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28It was my son, wasn't it?
0:04:31 > 0:04:33I couldn't believe
0:04:33 > 0:04:36that that could happen,
0:04:36 > 0:04:37to be honest with you.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Matthew underwent life-saving surgery
0:04:41 > 0:04:44to remove the largest tumour in his head.
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Two hours after the procedure, his brain started to shut down.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51He collapsed and he was placed on life support.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58Just all sort of went wrong, didn't it?
0:04:58 > 0:05:00- Yeah.- From there, really.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03They struggled to control his blood pressure.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09Which then led to Matthew having two strokes.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11I just sat and cried every day.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14The strokes paralysed his arms and legs
0:05:14 > 0:05:18and he was in a critical condition, surviving hour to hour.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24I leant over to Matthew and I just said, "Don't leave me."
0:05:26 > 0:05:30And a tear came down from his eye, and I thought, "He's heard me."
0:05:30 > 0:05:34And every day, he just kept fighting and fighting.
0:05:36 > 0:05:3818 months on, age 12,
0:05:38 > 0:05:42the strokes have left Matthew with limited movement and no speech.
0:05:44 > 0:05:46We used to talk so much.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49I think I'm going to forget what he sounded like.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53He is a changed little boy.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57But his friends have continued to give their love and support.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00- I'll start.- Hello.- Hello, it's Gabe.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02- Luke.- Emily!
0:06:02 > 0:06:06Visiting him in hospital and keeping his spirits up.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08I visit him every Sunday.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11We go and see him because it makes him a lot happier
0:06:11 > 0:06:13seeing all his friends.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Who was the tenth Doctor?
0:06:16 > 0:06:18Here is what I found.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21- It did it!- It guessed David Tennant, it's got it right!
0:06:21 > 0:06:24I hope one day he might be able to get out of his wheelchair
0:06:24 > 0:06:26and do a lot more.
0:06:26 > 0:06:31The whole family are exhausted by permanently living in hospital.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35You don't sleep in there, because there's alarms,
0:06:35 > 0:06:38there's emergency buzzers.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40It's constantly moving.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42They all want to come home,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45but their house is completely unsuitable for Matthew,
0:06:45 > 0:06:47so they're trapped.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50He's on a ventilator.
0:06:55 > 0:06:56If we arrived there now,
0:06:56 > 0:06:59we wouldn't physically be able to get Matthew in.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02Matthew's equipment and his wheelchair
0:07:02 > 0:07:06mean access is hard and moving around is impossible.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09The bathroom is upstairs, the corridors, doorways and layout
0:07:09 > 0:07:12would mean that Matthew might never come home.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17He'd just be stuck inside, in the one room,
0:07:17 > 0:07:19and that's not being a family.
0:07:19 > 0:07:21That's worse than being in hospital.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23So that's why we're here.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27We need to rebuild this house to give the little lad a chance
0:07:27 > 0:07:30to recover and the whole family an opportunity for a new start.
0:07:32 > 0:07:34You all right there? Good.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Are you excited about us coming to do the house?
0:07:36 > 0:07:38You are. Now, plainly, the last couple of years
0:07:38 > 0:07:40have been really difficult and got more difficult
0:07:40 > 0:07:43as you've gone along. The question this morning, I suppose,
0:07:43 > 0:07:44is what do you actually need from us?
0:07:44 > 0:07:47What is it that you need us to switch around?
0:07:47 > 0:07:48Well, getting into the house.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51- Yeah.- And then obviously around the house,
0:07:51 > 0:07:55it's being able to access as much as possible down the stairs.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58So, basically, you need more space downstairs, don't you?
0:07:58 > 0:08:01I mean, not that there's anything wrong with the house,
0:08:01 > 0:08:03but there's not enough of it for what you need, is there?
0:08:03 > 0:08:05No. It's not accessible for him.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Just want to be a family, don't we?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10So he can join in everything that's downstairs.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13What do you reckon, Matthew? Is it time for you to come home?
0:08:13 > 0:08:15This is really, really big.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18I really think you're going to struggle to do it within the nine days.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Do you think they're going to do it in the nine days?
0:08:20 > 0:08:23- There you go, see!- Thumb up if you think they're going to do it.
0:08:23 > 0:08:24Good boy.
0:08:24 > 0:08:27Lee's right - it is a colossal job.
0:08:27 > 0:08:31But Matthew's not the only one feeling optimistic.
0:08:31 > 0:08:34This community have turned out in force to help one of their own.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38I know we're asking for the Earth,
0:08:38 > 0:08:40and I think you've got a mammoth task on!
0:08:40 > 0:08:43So we're going to get started. Can we get him home?
0:08:43 > 0:08:45- ALL:- Yes!
0:08:46 > 0:08:47Go on, Matthew!
0:08:49 > 0:08:53So, for now, it's goodbye to the family and hello hard labour.
0:08:53 > 0:08:54Come on, let's get started.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57We've got over 100 people on site today...
0:08:57 > 0:08:58All the electricians with Billy.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00One, two...
0:09:00 > 0:09:03..although most of them appear to be sparks.
0:09:03 > 0:09:0418, 19...
0:09:04 > 0:09:06- That's ridiculous!- 20.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08That is absolutely ridiculous!
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Is there anybody here who isn't an electrician?
0:09:12 > 0:09:17First on the to-do list is gutting, stripping and clearing.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20It's all chaos in here, absolute chaos.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23We can't get started because of walls that are coming down.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25I'm not sure they've even seen the plans.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28They just know everything on the inside has to go.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30I take it this is all coming out then, Baz?
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Around the back, there's a 30-foot garden that needs clearing.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36Heading up the green team is...
0:09:36 > 0:09:37Jules.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40Oh, my goodness.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43And this week, he's working with a local garden designer.
0:09:43 > 0:09:46- Sarah, darling.- Yes, my darling?
0:09:46 > 0:09:49To make this space shiny and new and green,
0:09:49 > 0:09:51it needs digging over and clearing.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54Then there's about 100 tonnes of new stuff waiting to come in.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57But Jules has already seen a problem.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01Our main access for the job is through someone else's garden,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04through their garage and out around the houses.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07But there's no access for a digger or nothing.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09Which upsets me deeply.
0:10:09 > 0:10:11No doubt. Because without a mechanical digger,
0:10:11 > 0:10:15Jules is looking at having to remove everything in here by hand.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20On this build, we've had to get ahead of ourselves.
0:10:20 > 0:10:23Mark's ordered an old extension to be demolished.
0:10:26 > 0:10:27Building site.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30Because we needed larger, new foundations laid
0:10:30 > 0:10:32so we can start building on it instantly.
0:10:34 > 0:10:35New part of the house.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38Big job we've got on this one. We've got a wrap round extension on here,
0:10:38 > 0:10:40which is a structural insulated panel,
0:10:40 > 0:10:43which is going to go right round the building on two sides.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45It's going to be absolutely lovely.
0:10:45 > 0:10:46And heavy.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49There's loads of things to do, but it's good fun.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51Did you catch that? Quite quick, wasn't it?
0:10:51 > 0:10:54So we're extending the house at the back and side,
0:10:54 > 0:10:56it's very big and, without fail,
0:10:56 > 0:10:58it needs to go up by the end of the day.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Keep going, don't put it down.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04That's because we're fitting around six months' work
0:11:04 > 0:11:06into just nine days.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08Here to tell us all about it
0:11:08 > 0:11:10and how her design ideas will slow us down
0:11:10 > 0:11:13is the lovely, smiley Gabrielle Blackman.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Sometimes I get the feeling that you don't take design
0:11:16 > 0:11:18entirely seriously, or even care.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21Do you know what, it's been an ongoing joke over the years.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24I joke about the fact that design isn't really that important
0:11:24 > 0:11:27and the build is important, but the main thing for me is to keep quiet
0:11:27 > 0:11:29- and let you explain it. - Nick-splaining.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31Because if I keep carrying on, interrupting,
0:11:31 > 0:11:34how are you ever going to get your point across?
0:11:34 > 0:11:37Thanks, Nick. Let me explain.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39The existing extension, seen here in red,
0:11:39 > 0:11:41is going to be demolished
0:11:41 > 0:11:44and replaced by a brand-new area for Matthew,
0:11:44 > 0:11:46including a fabulous bedroom,
0:11:46 > 0:11:49a gorgeous wet room and a spare room for friends.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52In the centre of the house, I'll get someone to tear down the walls,
0:11:52 > 0:11:56and just you wait till you see the sumptuous open-plan space.
0:11:56 > 0:12:01A beautiful kitchen, dining area and an elegant living room.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03- Voila!- Yes, thank you, Gabi.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05We'll also be working upstairs.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08Matthew's medicine can safely be stored
0:12:08 > 0:12:09in this small new office room.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12There's a guest bedroom and a family bathroom.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15In Lee and Sue's bedroom,
0:12:15 > 0:12:17we'll be fitting a fully-integrated alarm system
0:12:17 > 0:12:20that links with Matthew's area.
0:12:20 > 0:12:21And that's not all.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24We can't have Matthew not using the outside space,
0:12:24 > 0:12:28so Jules will be building a lovely wheelchair-friendly garden,
0:12:28 > 0:12:31whilst it's Gabi's job to do the house,
0:12:31 > 0:12:33because she's a strong, powerful woman.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37I'm a strong, powerful ginger woman on a building site,
0:12:37 > 0:12:39with a set of plans.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Things are going to happen and it's all going to be amazing.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44Well, there's no argument with that, is there?
0:12:44 > 0:12:45Not yet, anyway, give me time.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Now, that is not looking very pretty, is it?
0:12:48 > 0:12:51That's looking very, very angry.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53The meerkat knows we are due horrible weather,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56but for now we're cracking on.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00As predicted, inside, the guys are busy ripping down the last
0:13:00 > 0:13:03of the internal walls, and we're holding up the ceiling...
0:13:05 > 0:13:07..with this man, Big Jim.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10And reinforced joists, obviously.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12Steel coming in!
0:13:15 > 0:13:18It's like a lot of ants, innit, holding it up.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Cos ants can carry more than their own body weight.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25Is that right, Bill? Big naturist, is our Bill, or so he tells me.
0:13:26 > 0:13:27Lovely.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30Still, we wouldn't do a build without him.
0:13:30 > 0:13:31Or him.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33Or her.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38Since his illness, Matthew has been stuck in hospital for 18 months,
0:13:38 > 0:13:40and so have his parents.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43We want to change that, but we're not the only ones.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49Matthew's school, headed up by headmistress Julie Henry,
0:13:49 > 0:13:52were determined to try and get him home
0:13:52 > 0:13:54and started a fundraising campaign
0:13:54 > 0:13:56that turned out to be very successful.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00We decided that we couldn't bear the thought of him
0:14:00 > 0:14:02being stuck in Birmingham and not being able to come home.
0:14:02 > 0:14:03We've raised £52,000.
0:14:03 > 0:14:07So, from tiny little amounts of 5p for a slice of cake
0:14:07 > 0:14:10to thousands of pounds from parents,
0:14:10 > 0:14:15we just did all we could to try and sort something out, our own DIY SOS.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17The money wasn't enough to adapt Matthew's house,
0:14:17 > 0:14:20so Mrs Henry and her students also wrote to us
0:14:20 > 0:14:23for help in getting him home.
0:14:23 > 0:14:26You have spread a little bit of magic in this world. Well done.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28CHEERING
0:14:30 > 0:14:33We've now got that little package to be able to help Matthew
0:14:33 > 0:14:36with physiotherapy and equipment that he needs,
0:14:36 > 0:14:38just to make his life as comfortable as he can.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41Are you as surprised as everybody else is at the response
0:14:41 > 0:14:44that the community has made in coming forward and joining in?
0:14:44 > 0:14:48Definitely, yeah, absolutely. I think it's been good for school
0:14:48 > 0:14:51because it's shown the children the world is full of really good people.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54And that's a really amazing lesson, don't you think?
0:14:54 > 0:14:58Great things can happen when a community pulls together.
0:14:58 > 0:15:01And, speaking of which, look at that extension.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04The outer shell is already up, with internal rooms starting to emerge.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07But, in the garden, not so much.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09We're looking at groundworks,
0:15:09 > 0:15:11we're having to make hardcore surfaces and bases,
0:15:11 > 0:15:13building structures, walls.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16It's a slow start and it's making Jules twitchy.
0:15:16 > 0:15:20- The whole patio area is resin-bound. - Is it? I like that stuff.
0:15:20 > 0:15:22So, that's got to be reduced, hardcored up.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25- At least if we had the machine in there...- Little digger.
0:15:25 > 0:15:29Little digger, we could fill a wheelbarrow, barrow everything in.
0:15:29 > 0:15:30'It is a solid argument he makes for a digger
0:15:30 > 0:15:32'but I'm going to have to ignore him.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35'As the entrance is only just wide enough for one person,
0:15:35 > 0:15:38'he just can't have one. That's it, finished.'
0:15:38 > 0:15:41You'll just have to work round it. I can't solve every problem for you.
0:15:41 > 0:15:45I basically want to put my problem on to you. That's basically it.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49- So that you can feel that it's no longer your problem!- Yeah.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53'You see, I'm very much like the team's bearded fairy godmother.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55'Look, here I am, fixing problems.'
0:15:55 > 0:15:58'Yeah, your up pipe is going to clash with your SIPs panel.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01'And here's another example of my generosity
0:16:01 > 0:16:04'and they inevitably make a long line and thank me.'
0:16:04 > 0:16:09Essentially, he is the least qualified person on the entire site.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11He's the only person here that has no skills.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13Everyone else actually has a job to do.
0:16:13 > 0:16:17So, his job in his eyes is just to annoy me. That's his job.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19'Yeah, well, that's not entirely true.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22'There are other people in the crew I need to irritate.'
0:16:22 > 0:16:25Very fat cameraman, he's not going to get through there. Give me that.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27'Once we press go, it's truly astonishing
0:16:27 > 0:16:31'what can happen in one day. These guys are amazing.'
0:16:31 > 0:16:33Excuse me, gentlemen. Have a look here.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35This is the other part of the extension.
0:16:35 > 0:16:37Despite the fact we've only been going a few hours,
0:16:37 > 0:16:39we actually do have an extension on both sides.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41'And it wraps all the way round the house,
0:16:41 > 0:16:46'giving loads of extra room in what will be Matthew's area.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48'Upstairs, I have to say, the joiners have excelled themselves.'
0:16:50 > 0:16:53None of these rooms are the same shape that they started out
0:16:53 > 0:16:56when we first came in. There's so much happening, it's ridiculous.
0:16:56 > 0:17:00'We were expecting wet weather and now it's definitely here.
0:17:00 > 0:17:04'But we human beings, we're waterproof, right? Like ducks.'
0:17:04 > 0:17:07SHE WAILS
0:17:07 > 0:17:11- Why are we doing the first fix in the rain?- Timing! Come on!
0:17:11 > 0:17:14It's going to ruin my hair!
0:17:14 > 0:17:16It's absolutely pouring down out there
0:17:16 > 0:17:18and everyone's still just working away.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20Are you really doing the first fix in the rain?
0:17:20 > 0:17:21To get the first fix in. Yeah.
0:17:21 > 0:17:25- So they can crack on with their bits.- OK.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27SHE LAUGHS
0:17:27 > 0:17:28Excellent.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30Love it.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32'OK, so it's not ideal working conditions
0:17:32 > 0:17:34'but there's a schedule to stick to
0:17:34 > 0:17:37'and these guys know we need to keep our foot on the gas.'
0:17:39 > 0:17:41Look at this, we've put a new beam down the centre of the house.
0:17:41 > 0:17:43That's going to hold up the middle of the house
0:17:43 > 0:17:46once we've taken all these acrow props away and it's all set.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48But it's out that way that it gets really interesting.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51You're into the main extension, where, around to the left,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53there is a spare room.
0:17:53 > 0:17:55This is his new bedroom. Go through that way.
0:17:57 > 0:17:59This is his wet room which is a great size.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02And, come through, this is where he'll be sleeping and living.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05It's a really big, big extension, isn't it?
0:18:05 > 0:18:07All we have to do tomorrow is get a roof on
0:18:07 > 0:18:08so we don't keep getting wet.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14# It's a new dawn, it's a new day! #
0:18:14 > 0:18:18And I'm sort of feeling good. Hello, Telford.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20- Two sugars in there, is that right?- That's right.
0:18:20 > 0:18:22- Bad for your teeth, you know. - Yeah, I know.
0:18:22 > 0:18:24THEY LAUGH
0:18:24 > 0:18:27'He's looking remarkably jolly this morning, isn't he?
0:18:27 > 0:18:30'In the house, the major work is happening downstairs
0:18:30 > 0:18:32'in what will be the family areas.
0:18:32 > 0:18:35'And there's lots to do to make it inhabitable.'
0:18:35 > 0:18:37First day I saw him outside the house
0:18:37 > 0:18:40it just made me realise how much it's worth doing.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43'It is worth doing and, having built the colossal extension yesterday,
0:18:43 > 0:18:45'we need to start building rooms.'
0:18:47 > 0:18:49Billy has very kindly stayed on with his sparks last night
0:18:49 > 0:18:51to get that extension wired.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54They've just got to connect all their ends up.
0:18:54 > 0:18:55We can start putting ceilings up.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57'As well as a massive build,
0:18:57 > 0:19:00'we also have a rather ambitious design spec.'
0:19:00 > 0:19:04So, I've been working with Nick for a few years now
0:19:04 > 0:19:08and he doesn't like designers, he finds us incredibly annoying.
0:19:08 > 0:19:12So I'm trying... On this build, I want to be prepared
0:19:12 > 0:19:14and see if I can head it off at the pass.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16'No, no, no, you have me all wrong.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18'I am here for you to advise and guide.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21'How can I assist you and your vision?'
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Morning, clever designer. How are you?
0:19:25 > 0:19:27I'm not good. Why are you here so early?
0:19:27 > 0:19:29I've normally got a few more hours.
0:19:29 > 0:19:31I thought I'd get up and get at it this morning.
0:19:31 > 0:19:34There's a lot to do, places to see, things to talk to.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36You know, all that stuff.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39- What are you doing here? - I've come to help.
0:19:39 > 0:19:40SHE SPLUTTERS
0:19:40 > 0:19:44'Here are some people that are truly helping, not disrupting.'
0:19:44 > 0:19:46You just take for granted what you've got as a family.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48They haven't got it. So it's nice to give back.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51- Touches home, doesn't it? - Yeah.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55Two young kids of my own. Never expect it to happen to anybody.
0:19:55 > 0:19:59I grew up with a disabled brother and my mum was on her own.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02Just watching her struggle every day for years.
0:20:02 > 0:20:05Then Pete said about this and it was like, yeah,
0:20:05 > 0:20:07come and help this family.
0:20:07 > 0:20:09She'd be very proud of you. Is she still around?
0:20:09 > 0:20:13No, she passed away with my brother. In the space of two weeks.
0:20:13 > 0:20:16- That's a tough start.- Yeah, it was, it was hard. But, like I say,
0:20:16 > 0:20:20when we heard about this, we had to help. We had to come and help.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27Matthew was ten when he was diagnosed with cancer.
0:20:27 > 0:20:30His life has changed but his friends have not.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34Jules has joined Emily, Gabe, Luke and Matthew,
0:20:34 > 0:20:36along with headmistress Julie Henry,
0:20:36 > 0:20:40to join in with another of this bright young man's interests.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43It's a bit bumpy, isn't it?
0:20:43 > 0:20:47Beautiful, the one on the right. Yes.
0:20:47 > 0:20:52- That's the female, isn't it? - No, the left one's the female.- OK.
0:20:52 > 0:20:54I like the one on the left!
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Matthew's friendships are a very important thing for him.
0:20:58 > 0:20:59Well, it is for every child, isn't it?
0:20:59 > 0:21:03They were a really close, little clique, the four of them.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05So, for them to continue that friendship,
0:21:05 > 0:21:06and the difference that made to Matthew,
0:21:06 > 0:21:09his little face used to light up when people visited him.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12It kept him in touch with what the gossip was at school.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15And what was going on in their lives as well.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17Those visits were hugely important.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20OWL SCREECHES
0:21:20 > 0:21:21Hello, guys.
0:21:23 > 0:21:26So, this is little Maddie. Pretty small, isn't she?
0:21:26 > 0:21:27Do you like her?
0:21:29 > 0:21:32You can stroke her, she's very gentle.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38I think we're still friends because it's, like,
0:21:38 > 0:21:41we've been through a lot together and that helps.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47That's it. Well done, guys.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54They wanted to do their bit for Matthew,
0:21:54 > 0:21:56he's climbed his own mountain, they wanted to climb theirs.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59So, they decided to go up Snowdon.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02We climbed a mountain because it would raise money
0:22:02 > 0:22:03and get him home faster.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08It was easy at the beginning even though it was steep.
0:22:08 > 0:22:13As the day progressed, it got very difficult.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17We wanted to get to the top.
0:22:17 > 0:22:21We thought of Matthew in hospital and that's what kept us going.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23OWL HOOTS
0:22:23 > 0:22:26- This is Boris.- It's really big.
0:22:26 > 0:22:27He has huge eyes.
0:22:27 > 0:22:28OWL HOOTS
0:22:28 > 0:22:31They went through blood, sweat and tears.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34And I think they managed to raise about £2,000 on their own.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37It was amazing, we never thought we would get that much.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40'How proud must their parents be.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43'And I wonder whether you've done as much for your friends
0:22:43 > 0:22:45'as they've done for theirs.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47'Back on site, we're still shifting the old stuff
0:22:47 > 0:22:49'and bringing in the new.'
0:22:49 > 0:22:51- What are you up to today?- Crane.
0:22:51 > 0:22:55We've got a crane coming in, in a minute, to lift my digger in
0:22:55 > 0:22:59and these bags of hard...core and stuff.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01Why ask if you're not interested?
0:23:01 > 0:23:04'Yeah, very rude. But, then, we all knew that, one way or another,
0:23:04 > 0:23:06'he was going to get his crane in.'
0:23:06 > 0:23:09I'd like to ride over in the digger, but they wouldn't let me.
0:23:09 > 0:23:12That'd put them over the weight limit, before you say it.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15I didn't want to say anything, but, you know. Everything's got a limit!
0:23:19 > 0:23:22It's a big boy's toy, Thunderbird 4 is here.
0:23:23 > 0:23:24I love this machine.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26Flying like an eagle.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31That's a pretty sight, though, isn't it?
0:23:34 > 0:23:39That, actually, makes me feel very, very, very, very, very happy.
0:23:40 > 0:23:41Get the chains off, get the chains off!
0:23:43 > 0:23:47You know I play the old didgeridoo? And I can play any piece of pipe?
0:23:47 > 0:23:50HE STRUGGLES TO PRODUCE A NOTE
0:23:50 > 0:23:52- Very good. - I've been practising.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54- I can now play a tune.- No. - Yeah, check this out. Ready?
0:23:54 > 0:23:59MUSIC: Careless Whisper by George Michael.
0:24:07 > 0:24:08Odell!
0:24:08 > 0:24:10THEY CHEER
0:24:10 > 0:24:12'How cool was that?
0:24:12 > 0:24:15'Odell is actually involved with the crane, so not only do we get
0:24:15 > 0:24:18'a crane, we get an Odell and some music to dance to.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21'And they've started felting the roof.'
0:24:21 > 0:24:22OK this end.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24'The introduction of a digger
0:24:24 > 0:24:26'has changed Julian's attitude completely.'
0:24:27 > 0:24:33# We plough the fields and scatter... #
0:24:33 > 0:24:35'Yep, available for pantomime or grading soil.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38'He's doing a great job out here, isn't he?
0:24:40 > 0:24:42'Upstairs is also looking in rude health,
0:24:42 > 0:24:44'Billy's team have completely rewired it.'
0:24:44 > 0:24:46HE SHOUTS OUT
0:24:46 > 0:24:47THEY CHEER
0:24:48 > 0:24:50'Now they're working their electrical way
0:24:50 > 0:24:54'through the downstairs before the other trades get in and take over.'
0:24:54 > 0:24:57Tomorrow, there'll be a lot of plasterboarders in
0:24:57 > 0:24:59and they'll want a lot of room.
0:24:59 > 0:25:01So we are trying to get well ahead of them.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04- We're having a boxing-out party! - THEY CHEER
0:25:04 > 0:25:08'Yes, as exciting as that seems, I think I'll skip it
0:25:08 > 0:25:10'and I'll leave it to you, thanks, Bill!'
0:25:13 > 0:25:17It's another day on site and another long list of jobs to do.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20SKA MUSIC PLAYS And this is just a take and a bit of ska to dance to, join in at home.
0:25:20 > 0:25:22For the sake of design, you just have to think of
0:25:22 > 0:25:24how you want those brackets.
0:25:24 > 0:25:25We'll just have to do a gallows bracket,
0:25:25 > 0:25:28but as really crisp and contemporary as possible.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30There's nothing else, absolutely no other options.
0:25:30 > 0:25:31- Argh!- Argh!
0:25:31 > 0:25:33- HE LAUGHS - Stop doing that!
0:25:33 > 0:25:35It's wrong, isn't it?
0:25:35 > 0:25:36This is why I get so tense.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39'It's less shouty on the inside!
0:25:39 > 0:25:43'Because, as promised, Billy's team have cleared the path for this lot.'
0:25:44 > 0:25:46We've got the boarders in today.
0:25:46 > 0:25:50Boarding, patching, maybe some skimming later.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53'Yep, there's nearly 400 square metres of boards to go on the walls.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55'In case you're wondering how much that is,
0:25:55 > 0:25:58'it's the size of 25 double-decker buses. That's a lot.'
0:25:59 > 0:26:02- There's plenty of trades here, isn't there?- Got a lot of good blokes.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05'And we're going to need every single one of them.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08'Dealing with a serious illness can be an isolating experience,
0:26:08 > 0:26:12'as Barney Schofield and his wife Louise know.
0:26:12 > 0:26:16'Their son Fergus was on the same ward as Matthew in Birmingham
0:26:16 > 0:26:18'but sadly lost his life.
0:26:18 > 0:26:22'In the toughest of times, Matthew's dad was there for them.'
0:26:22 > 0:26:25It was Lee who looked at me over a cup of tea in the coffee room
0:26:25 > 0:26:27on the ward and went, "Are you OK?"
0:26:27 > 0:26:30And, actually, that kind of look and that kind of support
0:26:30 > 0:26:33makes you know that you're not on your own. I'll always be thankful
0:26:33 > 0:26:36for Matthew's family to show me, one, how to do it
0:26:36 > 0:26:39and, two, to look after me while we went through our battle.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41What's interesting is that they're very hard on themselves
0:26:41 > 0:26:43about how they dealt with it.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46I mean, they were brilliant.
0:26:46 > 0:26:51What a fantastic, fantastic set of parents. They were an inspiration.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54They've had the surgery, the chemo.
0:26:54 > 0:26:55This is the next challenge, isn't it?
0:26:57 > 0:26:59'The strokes have robbed Matthew of his speech.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02'He's on a mobile ventilator and has limited movement.
0:27:02 > 0:27:07'For Dad Lee, I know the emotional battle must be ongoing.'
0:27:09 > 0:27:11Which was the hardest time for you, the diagnosis
0:27:11 > 0:27:14or the time after the operation, he was struggling?
0:27:14 > 0:27:16- The diagnosis.- Was it? - Yeah.
0:27:17 > 0:27:22I just seriously couldn't handle it because all that I could see was
0:27:22 > 0:27:25a big hole and no way out of it.
0:27:25 > 0:27:29It was as if someone had taken a big hammer to my world
0:27:29 > 0:27:31and just smashed it completely.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34- Because your heart was broken? - Yeah, yeah, well and truly.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Sue did exceptionally well in the beginning.
0:27:37 > 0:27:39I don't know what I would have done without her.
0:27:39 > 0:27:44But then, when Sue was struggling, I was able to step up.
0:27:44 > 0:27:50It just seems incredibly hard as a dad to think about that situation
0:27:50 > 0:27:53because it's taken a lot of things away.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56It's taken a hell of a lot of things away.
0:27:56 > 0:27:58And things that you take for granted.
0:27:58 > 0:28:01Obviously, communication.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04But, you know, we do our best.
0:28:04 > 0:28:07I think I'd be angry, I'm not sure who at.
0:28:07 > 0:28:11Erm... Not angry at all.
0:28:11 > 0:28:13Where would it get us?
0:28:13 > 0:28:15Where would it get Matthew?
0:28:15 > 0:28:20Because I think you'll only channel what you're doing
0:28:20 > 0:28:22in one direction and, at the moment,
0:28:22 > 0:28:25Matthew is that direction that we need to channel
0:28:25 > 0:28:30to try and get as much help and support for him that we can.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32And will the house help with that?
0:28:32 > 0:28:35The house will help immensely with that.
0:28:35 > 0:28:37Let's get him home amongst his family
0:28:37 > 0:28:39and so his friends can come round too
0:28:39 > 0:28:43and give you the best opportunity for that to go as well as it can.
0:28:43 > 0:28:44Unbelievable.
0:28:44 > 0:28:47- I still can't believe it! - HE CHUCKLES
0:28:47 > 0:28:49'Lee is a very patient and unassuming man.
0:28:49 > 0:28:52'But it's clear these last 18 months have been tough.
0:28:52 > 0:28:54'So, let's get this done.'
0:28:56 > 0:28:59'Three days in and their house is in bits.
0:28:59 > 0:29:04'And it looks like Jules has gone completely berserk with the digger.'
0:29:04 > 0:29:06This is a very, very big hole.
0:29:06 > 0:29:10We've got to do a soakaway for all the rain water
0:29:10 > 0:29:13off the back of the property. But, the problem is, we've hit clay.
0:29:13 > 0:29:17- As you can imagine... - Oh, no.- ..a clay hole in the ground
0:29:17 > 0:29:19- doesn't soak away water very well. - No.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22'To avoid this garden being a massive swimming pool,
0:29:22 > 0:29:26'we need a soakaway, or a giant hole filled with stones to help drainage.
0:29:26 > 0:29:28'So, that's what we're building.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31'But it's going to delay the entire plan out here by about two days.
0:29:31 > 0:29:35'And, with the rain, the place is an utter mess.'
0:29:35 > 0:29:38- It feels like the end of the world out here.- It does to me.
0:29:38 > 0:29:40THEY LAUGH
0:29:40 > 0:29:44'As the garden designer, call that man management?!
0:29:44 > 0:29:46'At least the extension's looking in pretty good shape.
0:29:46 > 0:29:49'Today, the name of the game is to get it completely bricked up.'
0:29:49 > 0:29:53We have an issue, there isn't enough bricks on site. Two packs short.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56'These guys are working so efficiently
0:29:56 > 0:29:58'we're running out of materials.'
0:29:58 > 0:29:59Excuse me, camera!
0:29:59 > 0:30:02'And, if they're not properly fed throughout with what they need,
0:30:02 > 0:30:03'it's Mark's fault.'
0:30:06 > 0:30:07'No, that's not right.
0:30:07 > 0:30:09'No! Don't do that! Don't...
0:30:09 > 0:30:12'Argh, no, not that kind!
0:30:12 > 0:30:15'His job is to keep the build running roughly on time
0:30:15 > 0:30:18'and answering questions, but most of them are generated from...'
0:30:18 > 0:30:23I think we just keep it square edge, really beautifully done, but simple.
0:30:23 > 0:30:26- Are you sure that's it?- Yeah. - So, you're going to walk away now?
0:30:26 > 0:30:29- I think you should.- This is...- It's you that makes it all difficult.
0:30:29 > 0:30:31- Thank you, Dave!- Oi!

0:30:33 > 0:30:36- Could you hold them for me, please? - The truth hurts, doesn't it?
0:30:36 > 0:30:37SHE SQUEALS
0:30:37 > 0:30:40No! Bullying in the workplace!
0:30:40 > 0:30:41THEY ALL LAUGH
0:30:41 > 0:30:44How is that OK? Is that OK?
0:30:44 > 0:30:46'Er, BBC guideline book, tickling...'
0:30:46 > 0:30:49I'm going to get Big Jim and he's going to go
0:30:49 > 0:30:53- and stick you in a cupboard.- You and your bigwigs don't scare me.
0:30:53 > 0:30:55- Billy wouldn't do that, would you? - What's that, Magic?
0:30:55 > 0:30:58You wouldn't throw me across a whole load of plasterboard, would you?
0:30:58 > 0:31:00I couldn't pick you up!
0:31:01 > 0:31:03What is going on today?
0:31:03 > 0:31:06'From a health and safety point of view, we've got forklifts, anyway.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08'Listen, bricks. We've almost finished the entire
0:31:08 > 0:31:11'wraparound extension and we have screed going down.'
0:31:11 > 0:31:14Going to mix it there, through a long tube,
0:31:14 > 0:31:18into the floors at the back and give us nice and level floors.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21OWL HOOTS
0:31:23 > 0:31:26Ain't it strange and quiet? Everyone's gone.
0:31:27 > 0:31:29Night-night.
0:31:29 > 0:31:31'Night-night, Billy.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33'Watch the door, Billy. To the right...
0:31:34 > 0:31:35'Night-night, Billy.'
0:31:38 > 0:31:41'We've now chucked around 4,500 man-hours at this place,
0:31:41 > 0:31:43'and we're halfway through.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46'Building, good. Garden, quagmire.'

0:32:00 > 0:32:02It's not ideal weather for gardening.
0:32:02 > 0:32:05'Today, their main job is to fill in the massive hole they dug yesterday
0:32:05 > 0:32:08'with hard-core and level the site as best they can.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27'It's only taken eight days but, at last, paths are emerging.
0:38:27 > 0:38:28'There's a summer house going up and,

0:39:21 > 0:39:23Bye! Give it a wave.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27'Quite emotional that, wasn't it?
0:39:27 > 0:39:29'When you're doing a six-month build in nine days,
0:39:29 > 0:39:31'you have to accept you'll have a site inspection -
0:39:31 > 0:39:34'285 pupils from Matthew's school.'
0:39:34 > 0:39:36Are you going to get the building finished in time.
0:39:36 > 0:39:38Ate we going to get the build finished in time?
0:39:38 > 0:39:39- ALL SHOUT:- Yeah.
0:39:39 > 0:39:41And they've brought gifts.
0:39:41 > 0:39:43- I love cake!- I love cake, too!
0:39:43 > 0:39:45LAUGHTER
0:39:45 > 0:39:49I want to say a really big thankyou for building this house for him.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51- CHILDREN:- Thank you!
0:39:54 > 0:39:58'When Matthew became so ill he couldn't leave hospital,
0:39:58 > 0:40:02'these guys and his friends didn't give up hope.
0:40:02 > 0:40:05'During his surgery, illness and cancer treatment,
0:40:05 > 0:40:08'Lee and Sue lived in the hospital with him.
0:40:08 > 0:40:12'But the year-and-a-half away from home must have taken its toll.'
0:40:13 > 0:40:17'Nobody wants their child to go through what he's been through,
0:40:17 > 0:40:19'and to fight as hard as he has.
0:40:19 > 0:40:21'If I could have swapped places with him,
0:40:21 > 0:40:25'I would have done it in a heartbeat. I really would.'
0:40:25 > 0:40:29Has it been tough for you and Lee to hang on together, through this?
0:40:29 > 0:40:31There wasn't a day when I didn't wish he wasn't there.
0:40:31 > 0:40:34That's amazing, given the circumstances and the stresses.
0:40:34 > 0:40:38It is when you consider that you're sitting in one room,
0:40:38 > 0:40:4024 hours a day, seven days a week.
0:40:40 > 0:40:42We've lived in a cubicle.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45Just a square, for 17 months, in hospital.
0:40:45 > 0:40:48Are you getting slightly agoraphobic coming out into the wide world?
0:40:48 > 0:40:50- It's terrifying.- Really? - Yeah.
0:40:50 > 0:40:54- To be honest, I'm scared to death. - Are you, of what?- Everything.
0:40:55 > 0:40:58I am, I'm just petrified.
0:40:58 > 0:41:02I'm not taking Matt as he was home. That's my fear.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05Because Matt's so different...
0:41:05 > 0:41:07- Yeah.- ..to what he was.
0:41:07 > 0:41:09It's impossible to imagine, as a parent,
0:41:09 > 0:41:11having to go through that process.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14Just show me the buzzers. Which one you're going to have as "no"
0:41:14 > 0:41:17- and which you're going to have as...- For no, that.
0:41:17 > 0:41:19- BUZZER HOOTS - Yeah. Perfect.
0:41:19 > 0:41:22If I could have anything, it would be for him to talk.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25Because I miss him so much.
0:41:25 > 0:41:27And I don't know what he's thinking.
0:41:27 > 0:41:30But his brain's got to rewire.
0:41:31 > 0:41:34The next 12 months are the most important,
0:41:34 > 0:41:35to get as much back as we can.
0:41:37 > 0:41:41- So we have to build a house for you where that's a possibility.- Mm.
0:41:41 > 0:41:45The marvellous thing is we can and we will.
0:41:48 > 0:41:51'It's our last day on the build.'
0:41:52 > 0:41:54Clear all that from the side of that.
0:41:54 > 0:41:57'Which is quite a scary prospect.'
0:41:57 > 0:42:00We're up against time now, so it's got to be done.
0:42:00 > 0:42:03'Yes, it requires synergy and energy and togetherness
0:42:03 > 0:42:05'to get over the line.'
0:42:05 > 0:42:08I'm having a lovely time. I feel like I'm at the seaside!
0:42:08 > 0:42:12I'm pretending this is sand and I'm making a sandcastle.
0:42:12 > 0:42:14'That's lovely, Bill!'
0:42:14 > 0:42:16Boys, boys, don't go away. I want you to do something.
0:42:16 > 0:42:18'Elsewhere it's not so calm.'
0:42:18 > 0:42:22At the end of the day, I promised Gabi she can have the house
0:42:22 > 0:42:24by about 12 o'clock. And it's great.
0:42:24 > 0:42:26Except for one thing.
0:42:26 > 0:42:27It's not quite ready.
0:42:28 > 0:42:31'Inside, there's a bit of furniture starting to come in
0:42:31 > 0:42:34'and that's because today is the day design takes over
0:42:34 > 0:42:37'and we can stand back and say how lovely it is.
0:42:37 > 0:42:38'There's four bedrooms now in the house,
0:42:38 > 0:42:40'including Mum and Dad's master bedroom.
0:42:40 > 0:42:43'Is that a hessian sack on the wall?
0:42:43 > 0:42:45'No, nobody puts sack on a wall!'
0:42:47 > 0:42:49- How is it to work with? - Terrible. Thick.
0:42:49 > 0:42:52I've gone through that many blades. You have to put some pressure on it.
0:42:52 > 0:42:54- Not happy. - 'You don't say.'
0:42:55 > 0:42:57'Around the back, the garden team
0:42:57 > 0:42:59'are also feeling the pinch of the last day.'
0:42:59 > 0:43:02This is going to change dramatically anyway when all the black stuff
0:43:02 > 0:43:05is covered over with the resin pea gravel, isn't it?
0:43:05 > 0:43:07Yeah. It needs to be bright and cheerful and happy
0:43:07 > 0:43:09and a nice place to be.
0:43:09 > 0:43:11'Yes, the green team are still making up
0:43:11 > 0:43:14'for the two days they lost to rain.
0:43:14 > 0:43:18'The topsoil, painting, planting and that resin pathway
0:43:18 > 0:43:21'will need pouring and time to set, so they are up against it.
0:43:21 > 0:43:23'Inside the house...'
0:43:23 > 0:43:25No, we want them all lovely.
0:43:25 > 0:43:28'..it should be the decorators' turn to buzz around,
0:43:28 > 0:43:31'but there's also electricians, carpenters
0:43:31 > 0:43:33'and the hoist guys are back.
0:43:35 > 0:43:37'All in all, we're still putting it together.
0:43:37 > 0:43:40'And finally, I've waited nine days to help out,
0:43:40 > 0:43:42'as Gabi looks stressed.'
0:43:42 > 0:43:44- How can I assist? - Everything apparently is fine
0:43:44 > 0:43:47but I just was in a... "Oh, my God, Gabs, we're going to have to move
0:43:47 > 0:43:50"the bath and the loo and everything's wrong."
0:43:50 > 0:43:52Nothing to be tense about. It's all going to work out in the end.
0:43:52 > 0:43:54There's a lot of love. A lot of love in the building.
0:43:54 > 0:43:57Enjoy the roses. Listen to the dolphins.
0:43:57 > 0:43:58THEY IMITATE DOLPHINS SQUEAKING
0:43:58 > 0:44:00I prefer you all when you're being horrible.
0:44:00 > 0:44:03Look, I'm going to go back to my Post-it notes of doom.
0:44:03 > 0:44:06- That's a negative idea, isn't it? - Not really.
0:44:08 > 0:44:10Gabi's a lot more better-looking than you.
0:44:12 > 0:44:16Thank you, darling. See, that's proper problem-solving, isn't it?
0:44:16 > 0:44:17NICK MUMBLES
0:44:17 > 0:44:18SOUND OF TAPE RIPPING Oh!
0:44:18 > 0:44:21'There are still a few problems to solve, some tweaking
0:44:21 > 0:44:24'and a number of cushions to cuddle. Don't worry, they'll get it right.'
0:44:24 > 0:44:26What a team. What an absolutely amazing team.
0:44:30 > 0:44:33Just nine days ago, we arrived to find a family
0:44:33 > 0:44:35who couldn't live in their own home,
0:44:35 > 0:44:40trying to make the best of a cruel situation.
0:44:40 > 0:44:42At ten years old, the life-saving operation
0:44:42 > 0:44:45to remove a cancerous brain tumour saved Matthew
0:44:45 > 0:44:49but left him trapped in hospital on a ventilator,
0:44:49 > 0:44:53robbed of independent movement and with no speech.
0:44:53 > 0:44:55I just said, "Don't leave me."
0:44:55 > 0:44:59And a tear came down from his eye, and he's heard me.
0:44:59 > 0:45:03The family were forced to live in hospital for 17 months
0:45:03 > 0:45:07as their own home was no longer fit for his needs.
0:45:07 > 0:45:09Lee and Sue don't like asking for help
0:45:09 > 0:45:13but their amazing community rallied round and raised money.
0:45:13 > 0:45:16But it wasn't enough to build them the house they needed.
0:45:16 > 0:45:18So, they called us.
0:45:20 > 0:45:22And we called these guys.
0:45:26 > 0:45:29Just look at what this phenomenally generous community have built.
0:45:32 > 0:45:34At the front, the step that prevented the family
0:45:34 > 0:45:36from entering their own home has gone.
0:45:39 > 0:45:43Inside, gone is the small, inaccessible kitchen.
0:45:44 > 0:45:47The new kitchen-cum-dining room is serene, spacious
0:45:47 > 0:45:50and, most important of all, accessible for Matthew.
0:45:52 > 0:45:54The living room, complete with hoists and modular furniture,
0:45:54 > 0:45:58means this family can finally relax together.
0:45:59 > 0:46:03Over into the colossal extension is Matthew's wet room
0:46:03 > 0:46:05and Gabi has done us proud.
0:46:05 > 0:46:08Heavily influenced by his love of Doctor Who,
0:46:08 > 0:46:13the medical facilities, like hoists and specialist bath, sit discreetly
0:46:13 > 0:46:15without feeling like this is a hospital.
0:46:15 > 0:46:17Oh, and his bedroom.
0:46:17 > 0:46:22There is no mistaking the TARDIS and more Doctor Who elements.
0:46:22 > 0:46:24This bedroom has been pieced together carefully,
0:46:24 > 0:46:27a highly specialist bed and alarm systems
0:46:27 > 0:46:30mean Matthew has everything he needs around him
0:46:30 > 0:46:33to keep him safe day and night.
0:46:34 > 0:46:36And we've built an extra room downstairs
0:46:36 > 0:46:39for friends and carers to stay over.
0:46:39 > 0:46:42Upstairs, the work has continued.
0:46:42 > 0:46:45Gabi has made sure there's an office room for medical equipment
0:46:45 > 0:46:47and drugs to be stored neatly away.
0:46:48 > 0:46:50And, as if that wasn't enough,
0:46:50 > 0:46:52we've completely refurbished the family bathroom.
0:46:52 > 0:46:56And there's another spare room for family or friends.
0:46:58 > 0:47:01And, finally, Lee and Sue's bedroom.
0:47:01 > 0:47:04And I have to admit, that wallpaper is stunning.
0:47:05 > 0:47:08But the real beauty is the integrated alarm
0:47:08 > 0:47:12and intercom systems so Sue can finally get some rest
0:47:12 > 0:47:15and she has contact with Matthew's room at all times.
0:47:17 > 0:47:20And that's not all. The garden was completely wheelchair unfriendly,
0:47:20 > 0:47:22with steps and obstacles,
0:47:22 > 0:47:25meaning Matthew would never have been able to come outside.
0:47:27 > 0:47:29But now...
0:47:29 > 0:47:30Oh, it's transformed.
0:47:32 > 0:47:34Folding doors open out onto the patio area.
0:47:34 > 0:47:37Raised beds hold sweet-smelling flowers
0:47:37 > 0:47:42and wide, smooth paths lead down to a summer house.
0:47:43 > 0:47:46For 18 months, this family have been living on a knife edge,
0:47:46 > 0:47:48unable to come home.
0:47:50 > 0:47:51But we, the SOS team,
0:47:51 > 0:47:54and the amazing community who have helped us build this,
0:47:54 > 0:47:57now hope they have a real chance at a new start.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59Open your eyes.
0:48:00 > 0:48:01Oh, wow!
0:48:02 > 0:48:04- Is this our house? - LEE LAUGHS
0:48:06 > 0:48:07Oh, my goodness.
0:48:09 > 0:48:10It's so big.
0:48:10 > 0:48:12Isn't it?
0:48:12 > 0:48:14It's like something off a movie.
0:48:14 > 0:48:16THEY LAUGH
0:48:16 > 0:48:17Well, space was the key thing.
0:48:17 > 0:48:20We had to give you as much open space as possible.
0:48:20 > 0:48:22It's amazing.
0:48:22 > 0:48:23Your house used to stop there.
0:48:24 > 0:48:26Did it?
0:48:26 > 0:48:27THEY LAUGH
0:48:27 > 0:48:29It did.
0:48:29 > 0:48:30I don't know how you've done it.
0:48:30 > 0:48:32I honestly don't know how you've done it.
0:48:32 > 0:48:35Well, truly, with the help of some amazing people.
0:48:35 > 0:48:37Take a stroll around your kitchen.
0:48:37 > 0:48:40Masses of storage. THEY GASP
0:48:40 > 0:48:42Then, this side is all like a breakfast bar.
0:48:42 > 0:48:44Matthew can get his chair underneath there.
0:48:44 > 0:48:47It's lower level so that he can work down here.
0:48:47 > 0:48:49Just so much to take in, isn't there?
0:48:50 > 0:48:52So, this was the end of the house.
0:48:52 > 0:48:54Surely not!
0:48:54 > 0:48:56Have a seat.
0:48:56 > 0:48:59I want to take you through a few bits and pieces in here as well.
0:49:01 > 0:49:04What we can do here is create a whole day-bed
0:49:04 > 0:49:07that the three of you can actually lay down on, sit together,
0:49:07 > 0:49:09cuddle up with.
0:49:09 > 0:49:10I just can't believe it.
0:49:12 > 0:49:13Hoists.
0:49:13 > 0:49:15Oh, yeah. I never noticed that.
0:49:15 > 0:49:17The important thing being, obviously,
0:49:17 > 0:49:19to get him out of the wheelchair and sit him down with you.
0:49:19 > 0:49:21You'll notice the floor is flat throughout.
0:49:21 > 0:49:23By the way, that flat floor goes all the way out the front.
0:49:23 > 0:49:25- Incredible. - HE LAUGHS
0:49:25 > 0:49:29- It is, it's amazing. - I just can't...comprehend it.
0:49:29 > 0:49:31It's quite a change, isn't it?
0:49:31 > 0:49:35Would you like to come and see your son's new room?
0:49:35 > 0:49:37Yeah.
0:49:37 > 0:49:39- Oh!- Oh, wow.
0:49:39 > 0:49:40Oof!
0:49:41 > 0:49:44- It's a TARDIS. - SHE GASPS
0:49:46 > 0:49:48He's going to love this.
0:49:50 > 0:49:51How have you done it?
0:49:55 > 0:49:56Peter Capaldi.
0:49:56 > 0:49:59It's nice to get the real Doctor Who to send a message to him.
0:50:01 > 0:50:03It's just amazing.
0:50:05 > 0:50:07It's kind of cool, isn't it?
0:50:07 > 0:50:11All the extra plug sockets for all the extra equipment you need around.
0:50:11 > 0:50:13The panic button is over on the right there.
0:50:13 > 0:50:16A little finishing touch for the end of the evening, by the way.
0:50:17 > 0:50:20In the evening, you can actually get a light-up little police box.
0:50:20 > 0:50:22Oh, wow.
0:50:22 > 0:50:23What else did you need?
0:50:23 > 0:50:24A wet room.
0:50:24 > 0:50:26You can see there's a hoist track
0:50:26 > 0:50:29- that leads to the door of the TARDIS.- Yep.
0:50:29 > 0:50:30Step in, please.
0:50:31 > 0:50:32- Wow!- Thank you so much.
0:50:32 > 0:50:34Bath is obviously very important.
0:50:34 > 0:50:38But to make things a little bit easier, the whole bath raises.
0:50:38 > 0:50:40- It's amazing. - There is a hoist system here
0:50:40 > 0:50:42so, basically, you go all the way through.
0:50:44 > 0:50:46In actual fact, as his rehabilitation goes along,
0:50:46 > 0:50:49he'll start to be able to start to take control of that himself.
0:50:49 > 0:50:53I just want him to be happy and have a bit of dignity.
0:50:53 > 0:50:55Come on, I want to show you some of the upstairs bits.
0:50:56 > 0:50:57Oh, wow!
0:50:59 > 0:51:00Isn't it bright?
0:51:01 > 0:51:03Oh, my God.
0:51:03 > 0:51:05A totally different layout to what we had, isn't it?
0:51:05 > 0:51:07I couldn't have imagined it would be like this.
0:51:07 > 0:51:11- A beautiful room. - Done yourself proud. Really proud.
0:51:11 > 0:51:13It's just a hideaway, isn't it?
0:51:13 > 0:51:17There is a telephone by your bed there. That's an intercom
0:51:17 > 0:51:19so the carers can talk to you.
0:51:19 > 0:51:22You can actually just step away for five minutes and get some sleep.
0:51:22 > 0:51:24- Yeah, that's...- Just relax.
0:51:24 > 0:51:26- Because you haven't been able to for a long time.- No.
0:51:35 > 0:51:36Yeah.
0:51:38 > 0:51:39SHE SNIFFS AND SIGHS HEAVILY
0:51:42 > 0:51:45- Are you all right?- Yes. It's just seeing him there.
0:51:45 > 0:51:47SHE SNIFFS
0:51:47 > 0:51:50- He'd say this'd be his room. - Yeah, that's very true.
0:51:50 > 0:51:51Come through.
0:51:53 > 0:51:55We know that there's a massive amount of medical equipment
0:51:55 > 0:51:58and storage that you needed. So what we've done is
0:51:58 > 0:52:00we've put huge amounts of storage into the house,
0:52:00 > 0:52:02so you can stock the place up.
0:52:02 > 0:52:04- Oh, there's pictures of him everywhere.- Yeah.
0:52:10 > 0:52:14So, we've shown you around the whole house now. What do you think?
0:52:14 > 0:52:17I think it's absolutely amazing
0:52:17 > 0:52:19what you have actually done in nine days.
0:52:19 > 0:52:22This is a massive, massive change.
0:52:23 > 0:52:27But it's been too long since we've been home
0:52:27 > 0:52:29and been able to get him home.
0:52:29 > 0:52:32And he's wanted to come home for so long.
0:52:32 > 0:52:34- And he's on his way. - He's on his way.
0:52:35 > 0:52:37You've brought him home.
