0:00:02 > 0:00:03I've met some amazing people on DIY SOS.

0:00:03 > 0:00:06Some of them even like to give me a bit of a grilling.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08- COMPUTER GENERATED VOICE:- Can I ask you a question?

0:00:08 > 0:00:11- Yeah, go ahead.- Why don't you do any work on The Big Build?

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Ryan is a funny, warm and caring 24-year-old man,

0:00:16 > 0:00:20but he's trapped in hospital 50 miles away from his family.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Not seeing my family all the time is not good.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24I miss them.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27A brain injury five years ago has split this family apart.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30I don't matter. There's only Ryan that matters.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33So, we want to bring him home, but first we've got to work together.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Go on, say it. Go on, say it.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Ho-ho-ho. Stop distracting me!

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Go and fix everything.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41It will take an almighty effort...

0:00:41 > 0:00:42To be able to help anybody is good.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45To be able to help anybody for free is even better.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48But thanks to an inspired local community...

0:00:48 > 0:00:51This is going to be life-changing for him when he comes home.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54..we might just get a young man back home to his family.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56They've turned out, and they've just smashed it.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59West Country boys, you can't beat it.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04We have just nine days to do the job, all the usual suspects are here,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Gabrielle Blackman is our designer this week,

0:01:06 > 0:01:11and when we put up an ad asking for help in Bristol, this lot turned up!

0:01:11 > 0:01:15This is DIY SOS - The Big Build!

0:01:35 > 0:01:3620 years ago,

0:01:36 > 0:01:41when warehouse worker Dave Pollard and checkout operator Rachel married,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45they bought a small three-bed house in Hartcliffe in south Bristol.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49It wasn't long before they filled it to the brim, with four kids.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Jason, Ryan, Darren and Gemma.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55It was fine, it was lovely.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57It was a little bit of a struggle,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00but we didn't find it much more difficult bringing up one than we found it

0:02:00 > 0:02:03bringing up four. It seemed to be fine over the years.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It was just fun to be around.

0:02:07 > 0:02:1020 years later, the Pollards are still there.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Jason, the eldest and the only one to have left home,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14remembers the bustle fondly.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17My ma and dad didn't really like it that much,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20because we used to play football in the house,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24and you can see a bit of damage on the chandelier right there.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29There was always someone around, and there was always noise being made,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and there was always drama happening,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35and you can't really get any peace and quiet even if you wanted it.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38It was very busy all the time.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41For the Pollards, having four kids in a small three-bedroom house

0:02:41 > 0:02:45was a challenge, but they loved their lives being so full.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47However, not all the boys were so noisy.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Over the years, if you had to narrow it down,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Ryan was by far the best behaved child we ever had.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57If he was going down town,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00he was always offering if I wanted to come with him.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04He was the kindest brother out of them all.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Ryan loved his family first, but football came a close second.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Ryan used to go over on the green with his dad and play football.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Even myself, I used to look forward to finishing work early to go and

0:03:18 > 0:03:19get all the boys out.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22And of course, myself, Ryan, loved that.

0:03:24 > 0:03:25Miss it.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28I really miss that, you know.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Five years ago, when Ryan was 19,

0:03:32 > 0:03:36a series of events began that would bring their busy lives to a screeching halt.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45Ryan was having blurred vision and headaches for a few weeks.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48We'd been out all day, we'd come home,

0:03:48 > 0:03:50and then Ryan was led on the settee,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53and I knew that something wasn't right.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56So his dad took him to the eye hospital.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00The doctors saw that Ryan needed urgent medical care.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03He was rushed in for an emergency operation.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08It just came out of the blue, how serious it was.

0:04:11 > 0:04:12Ryan had a blocked ventricle.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16The build-up of fluid was putting a dangerous amount of pressure

0:04:16 > 0:04:17on his brain.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21It's one of those situations where you say, "Well, it don't happen to us.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23"These things don't happen to us, they happen to other people."

0:04:23 > 0:04:26I got told the operation went fine.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29My mum eventually allowed me to go to the hospital to see him.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Because, obviously, they had to shave part of his head where they had to go in,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35and he was joking around saying, "Oh, I'm not going back to that barber."

0:04:35 > 0:04:38"The barber's messed up my hair," and everything.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41It looked like Ryan was going to make a full recovery,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44but the ordeal wasn't over.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Ryan would need further surgery.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51He had an operation to put a drain in to drain the fluid,

0:04:51 > 0:04:52but it was too late.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55By midnight, he was in a coma.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56They did another CT scan,

0:04:56 > 0:05:00and it was told to us then that there was significant brain damage.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Devastated.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Ryan had lost control of his breathing, swallowing,

0:05:06 > 0:05:08and was partially paralysed.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12He was transferred to the nearest specialist neurological unit.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Five years later, he's still there.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Rachel visits every day,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20but it takes her two-and-a-half hours to get to the hospital.

0:05:20 > 0:05:21Hi, Ryan, how are you?

0:05:23 > 0:05:24I miss him.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29It was as though a part of you was missing.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Ryan's body might not work, but his mind is still active,

0:05:32 > 0:05:36and he's able to communicate short sentences through a tablet.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Not seeing my family all the time is not good.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41I miss them.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46I need to come home and be with my family.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Saturday is the only day Dave and Rachel can bring Ryan home for the day.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54Ryan looks forward to coming home.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57That is the only thing that he wants to do.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59But he isn't able to stay the night.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03With no downstairs bedroom or bathroom, their small home isn't suitable.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Just getting in the door is a big challenge.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Obviously, the house is not huge,

0:06:11 > 0:06:16and obviously with the furniture and the doors, all the equipment,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19it's tight. It's tight getting him in, especially with his long legs.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22He's got such long legs.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27With Dave working six days a week, Rachel and Dave aren't at home much.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29The once noisy house is quiet and empty.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34It feels lonely in this house, because there's really...

0:06:34 > 0:06:36They're only here a few hours a day at most.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42I love talking to people and telling people about my day,

0:06:42 > 0:06:46but my mum and dad are not here to tell my day to.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50The long hours are taking their toll.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53In the house, there's damp from the bathroom

0:06:53 > 0:06:54and black mould downstairs -

0:06:54 > 0:06:58particularly worrying for Ryan, with his assisted breathing.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Collapse on the sofa. Just exhausted most days.

0:07:04 > 0:07:09Ryan has spent five years in a hospital room 100 miles away from his family.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11It's been rubbish living in hospital.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13I want to go home.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19He doesn't like it at all. He doesn't.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21This family is torn apart.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24They need our help to get them back together.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Sometimes when I leave, I cry walking up the road,

0:07:27 > 0:07:29because I know he wants to come with me.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33How have you managed to survive over these last few months?

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Because it couldn't have been easy.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37You don't. You just do it.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38It's for Ryan. You just do it.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40You know you've got to do it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42You have no choice.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- He is my son.- If you think about it,

0:07:44 > 0:07:46the trouble is you can't get Ryan home, can you?

0:07:46 > 0:07:50And you can't do it if we leave the house looking the same.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55In order to make this house viable as somewhere to get him home,

0:07:55 > 0:07:57we've got to completely change the shape of it.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Yeah, that's what this is all about.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00That's what it's always been about.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It's always been about just getting Ryan home.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06It doesn't matter how much we change it? I know that this is your home.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07It doesn't matter what you do to it...

0:08:07 > 0:08:10- Not at all.- ..as long as Ryan's got a bedroom and a wet room,

0:08:10 > 0:08:14that's all I want. He's like a different person when he comes home.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17He is more engaged, he smiles more.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21When he's in there, he doesn't want to know.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24So, you think that if we can get him home it will make a difference to

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- his potential future. - Definitely, yes,

0:08:26 > 0:08:31because he'll be more willing to do things, which, the more Ryan does,

0:08:31 > 0:08:32the better it is for him.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Are you ready to go and meet some of the builders?

0:08:34 > 0:08:37- Let's go.- All right, let's go and tell them why it's

0:08:37 > 0:08:41important, and then they get all fired up and all work at a million miles an hour during the week,

0:08:41 > 0:08:43and that's how we make it work.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44Good, good, good. Let's go for it.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Come on.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50There are over 100 of Bristol's finest builders here,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52champing at the bit to get on with it.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55We're going to do our best, aren't we?

0:08:55 > 0:08:57We're going to try and change things around, yeah?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Yes.- So, we are going to change your house a lot.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02We do understand that, and we understand that is nerve-racking for you as well,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05even though something good is going to come at the end of it.

0:09:05 > 0:09:06I'd like to say to all these people here,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08that I'd like to really thank them.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10They don't really know much about Ryan's story,

0:09:10 > 0:09:12but Ryan has been in a care home for five years,

0:09:12 > 0:09:14and you guys giving your time,

0:09:14 > 0:09:17your effort and your products is so much appreciated.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18We are going to applaud you.

0:09:18 > 0:09:19Thank you very much.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26If we are taking a lot out of the house and everything,

0:09:26 > 0:09:27can I have the front door?

0:09:27 > 0:09:31You don't ask that kind of question until the owners have gone.

0:09:31 > 0:09:32LAUGHTER

0:09:36 > 0:09:38To make this big build possible in nine days,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42some lovely trades have got in ahead of us and laid the foundations for

0:09:42 > 0:09:43the brand-new extension.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Back inside, before we can rebuild everything,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51we have to smash everything to bits.

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Don't it make you proud?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Smashing aside, it's safety first on our site.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05You must have the appropriate footwear.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Let's have a look at the sole on this.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Look at the sole, it's amazing.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12- I've been obliged...- Like Christmas.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16All the builders down this way are not just pulling their weight,

0:10:16 > 0:10:18they're pulling down the ceiling too.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19CHEERING

0:10:22 > 0:10:2414 blokes to one lady.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26Well done, you!

0:10:26 > 0:10:28Come on, chaps, the extension has arrived.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Should we be helping with this, or have you got other things to do?

0:10:31 > 0:10:32I've got plans to look at.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33I better get stuck in.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36- You mind your back.- Yeah...

0:10:36 > 0:10:38We know what you're like.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Got a glass back, that boy.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Glass back? Talk about speedy space making,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46the extension is barely off the lorry, and the panels are flying up.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Look, Ryan, I'm working!

0:10:50 > 0:10:52See, it's a little bit busy in here at the moment.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55TOOLS WHIR

0:10:55 > 0:10:56And the sound of industry.

0:10:56 > 0:10:57Don't you just love it?

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Whilst ripping everything out,

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Mark reckons he's discovered the cause of all that black mould.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07This is one of the major problems we've got that's going on here.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Every time they put a piece of furniture against the wall,

0:11:09 > 0:11:11it just sucks the moisture and the mould through.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14- It's terrible.- We need to redesign this small, damp

0:11:14 > 0:11:17three-bedroom house into a lovely family home,

0:11:17 > 0:11:21so we're calling on the services of the magnificently talented Gabrielle Blackman.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24What have you got here? You've got a kitchen going there...

0:11:24 > 0:11:26So, we've got the kitchen here...

0:11:27 > 0:11:28Bear with, bear with...

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Her challenge here is to use every scrap of space

0:11:31 > 0:11:33to accommodate Ryan and his family's needs,

0:11:33 > 0:11:38so knowing the thickness of the yet-to-be-built internal walls is key.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Yeah, that's a new stud wall, comes in here.

0:11:40 > 0:11:45- And that wall, that's how we know we've got the space.- It's just this gap here is really crucial to me.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50This is stressing me out, this build, because it's smaller than we'd like,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52to be honest. We'd love to give them more.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54- It is.- We've got to make the best of the space here,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57because we're constricted space-wise in this whole build,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00so we're not going to overcomplicate.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03No, we wouldn't overcomplicate it, would we?

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Who's ever said that you have overcomplicated?

0:12:05 > 0:12:08- Never.- Never.- You know I hate that, I hate to gild the lily.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Gaby's epic space battle is about getting Ryan back into normal family

0:12:11 > 0:12:13life without lily gilding.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17At the front, we're installing a wheelchair lift, whilst inside,

0:12:17 > 0:12:19the mouldy living room will be transformed into a bachelor pad

0:12:19 > 0:12:21for Ryan, with a wet room.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24The back of the house will be extended to include a new

0:12:24 > 0:12:26kitchen and spacious living room.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Upstairs, we're widening the hallway,

0:12:28 > 0:12:32redesigning all three bedrooms and installing a new bathroom.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Whilst in the garden, it's about low maintenance,

0:12:34 > 0:12:38so we're paving it with curved beds and a seating area.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It's exactly what this family needs.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- The general theme? - There isn't a general theme...

0:12:45 > 0:12:46- Isn't a general theme?- No.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I don't really like themes.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51- Isn't there?- No. It's just good design.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55But all TV designers have to go, "Yeah, this one's about...

0:12:55 > 0:12:58"I've gone with a Rajisthani theme here."

0:12:58 > 0:13:02I'm not a TV designer, I'm an interior designer in the real world.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04If I went and burst into people's house and said, "Moroccan",

0:13:04 > 0:13:06they'd just go, "Get out."

0:13:06 > 0:13:09So I have to just think, "What does this family actually want,

0:13:09 > 0:13:11"what do they need, what do they like?"

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- And just make that happen.- And that's why we love you, you see.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17That's why we love you, because you don't do that showing off for the sake of it, you know?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Yep, she's magnificent, isn't she?

0:13:19 > 0:13:23Forceful but kind, knows what she wants, and knows how to get it.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Builders from all over the south-west are making Gaby's designs come to

0:13:26 > 0:13:30life, but that doesn't explain why there is a man making tiny holes in

0:13:30 > 0:13:34the house, or why it's starting to snow.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Perhaps Mark can fill us in.

0:13:36 > 0:13:37- SHOUTING:- So, all this here...

0:13:37 > 0:13:39It's not Christmas.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40This was the problem for the damp,

0:13:40 > 0:13:43so it's all been taken out of the walls,

0:13:43 > 0:13:46then it's all taken back and sucked away into here,

0:13:46 > 0:13:47completely removed off-site.

0:13:47 > 0:13:53We're going to ventilate the cavities, and that will cure all the damp.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57So there will be no damp or moisture in this house ever again.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59SHOUTING: OK, Mark! Thanks a lot!

0:13:59 > 0:14:02Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there's still a bit of damp,

0:14:02 > 0:14:05and it's much worse than we thought.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08When I moved that up, we can see that the joist is right the way there.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11- There's a lot of damp.- Look at all the mould up there, as well.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13They've overboarded it.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17They've overboarded it and it's still come away, hasn't it?

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- Yeah.- Actually, and the boards above are rotten, as well, aren't they?

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- Yeah.- That's a bit of a worry, that is, isn't it?

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- You can't leave it. - No, you can't leave it.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26The upstairs joists are rotten through.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28With its walls filled with the wrong ventilation,

0:14:28 > 0:14:29double glazing and leaky plumbing,

0:14:29 > 0:14:32this house has become the perfect home for wood rot.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34And we weren't expecting this.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Is it a bathroom going above here?

0:14:37 > 0:14:39- Bathroom above here. - Including a bath?

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- Yes.- Well, we have to change the joists, they're all rotted out.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Oh, my God. It'll all have to come out.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46Well, there's a brick wall sitting up there on that floor.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'And this small house is hiding a big secret.'

0:14:51 > 0:14:54One of the problems we have is that this wall,

0:14:54 > 0:14:58which is actually made out of a kind of brick, is resting on this floor.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01You can see through the gap, there's nothing underneath,

0:15:01 > 0:15:05there is no support underneath, and these boards are rotten.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07How much longer would it be before that rotted,

0:15:07 > 0:15:10and the wall just went straight down through the floor?

0:15:10 > 0:15:12It literally was just a matter of time, wasn't it,

0:15:12 > 0:15:14before they ended up with that on their heads?

0:15:14 > 0:15:17As the boys and girls knock down that wall resting on rotten timber,

0:15:17 > 0:15:19it's clear this job is getting much bigger.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22But no matter what it throws at us, we will succeed for Ryan.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26You see, he's had to live in a specialist neurological hospital for

0:15:26 > 0:15:30the last five years, and that's just not right.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Mum and Dad. Hello, mate, can I have a shake of the hand, there?

0:15:33 > 0:15:35How are you? Nice to meet you.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38So, interesting thing about chatting to - doing an interview with

0:15:38 > 0:15:42Ryan, is a bit like meeting the Prime Minister or Madonna,

0:15:42 > 0:15:45you have to supply your questions in advance, so

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Ryan has actually filled out -

0:15:47 > 0:15:49spent some time filling out some answers for me.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52So, health assistant Sarah - she's best buddy, really -

0:15:52 > 0:15:55helps Ryan get his communication tablet ready.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58How do you feel about being here, rather than at home?

0:15:59 > 0:16:03Being in hospital all the time is not good, it's boring.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05So would...

0:16:05 > 0:16:09If you were at home, it means that your mum's doing most of your care

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- for you?- I prefer having my mum doing my care,

0:16:12 > 0:16:15because I know her and I feel more comfortable.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Is your mum tougher on you when it comes to your physio than the physios are?

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Yes, that's a nod!

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Do you know, I would have figured that was the case.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27I think I will make more progress when I go home,

0:16:27 > 0:16:32because my family will be there all the time to motivate me.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34I will be happier.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Well, that's the plan, that's why everyone's working so hard for you.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41I can promise you that we will deliver a house that you can come back to

0:16:41 > 0:16:44by the end of next week, all right?

0:16:44 > 0:16:45Can I ask you a question?

0:16:45 > 0:16:49- Yeah, go ahead.- Why don't you do any work on The Big Build?

0:16:51 > 0:16:52LAUGHTER

0:16:55 > 0:16:58No, don't film me!

0:16:58 > 0:17:00Ryan, that's not funny! Well, it is funny, but...

0:17:00 > 0:17:02You wicked boy!

0:17:02 > 0:17:05You wicked, wicked boy, you knew that was going to happen!

0:17:05 > 0:17:09Yep, it's clear from meeting him Ryan is a kind and witty young man

0:17:09 > 0:17:11who's not a bad judge of character, too.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14To prove Ryan wrong, I'm going to help the floor being taken up -

0:17:14 > 0:17:16by recording this voiceover.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Jules could also use some of my indispensable wisdom at the front of the house,

0:17:20 > 0:17:22so I'm going to give it to him.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Go on, then, what's on... I can see there's a look of concern in your eye.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31No, we talked, because we're having the lift there.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Flattening out, and then having a little lift to take it down, right,

0:17:34 > 0:17:35so that's his access, yeah.

0:17:35 > 0:17:40And then we've got steps beside it, but there was talk of...

0:17:40 > 0:17:42A slope instead.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43Yeah, doing a ramp instead.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46What I'm suggesting is that we have

0:17:46 > 0:17:47a sloped pathway.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51We've noticed on this job that you're getting a lot more involved with the design.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54You've redesigned the inside, taken the walls out,

0:17:54 > 0:17:55you've redesigned the ground floor,

0:17:55 > 0:17:58and now you're redesigning the front garden.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02I just like to bring an extra 30% if I can to every build that I'm on.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- Yeah, yeah. - And for that 30% more of me,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08there's 70% less walls and rotten floor in the house,

0:18:08 > 0:18:11which means that's 100% surprise for Gabby.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12I love a bit of building maths.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Oh, my goodness!

0:18:16 > 0:18:18- Yeah, we took out... - What's happened?

0:18:18 > 0:18:22Well... Well, a few extra things happened.

0:18:22 > 0:18:23You see,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26first of all, right, it wasn't our fault.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29You've broken the whole house!

0:18:29 > 0:18:33It's very nice, isn't it? I like it, it's like a mezzanine, balcony.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35That's design for you.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- That's design. - You've ruined everything!

0:18:38 > 0:18:39Where is the house?

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Most of the house is in that skip.

0:18:45 > 0:18:46Not bad, is it?

0:18:46 > 0:18:50Well, not bad in the sense that our super-keen Bristol builders

0:18:50 > 0:18:52overloaded the skip. Not to worry,

0:18:52 > 0:18:56we've got Vince on hand to off-load the surplus into another skip.

0:18:56 > 0:18:57In your own time, Vince.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Another muggy day, another muddy pile of rubble.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Our Bristol crew has sprung into action like a well-choreographed ballet -

0:19:05 > 0:19:08a Swan Lake of concrete, if you will.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10And here's a very heavy Darcey Bussell.

0:19:10 > 0:19:15Well, unfortunately I forgot my wellingtons, so I can't really go...

0:19:15 > 0:19:19You see how thick the concrete is, it's almost up to his wellies.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22You know, I can't go in with my dancing shoes on.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24OK, twinkle toes, this dancing is all very well,

0:19:24 > 0:19:28but Jules' concreting and scaffold for the extension roof is getting in

0:19:28 > 0:19:31the way of the landscapers working in the garden.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33They're cut off from the rest of the house,

0:19:33 > 0:19:36and the only way to find out about their plans is from the roof.

0:19:36 > 0:19:41Can you tell me, roughly, what you're doing in the back garden?

0:19:41 > 0:19:44We're putting in a boundary fence to give some privacy,

0:19:44 > 0:19:47we're bringing the garden level up so that it's level throughout.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50We're making it low maintenance, a few planting beds.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52The family have got enough on their plate as it is at the moment.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55What they need is something that's pleasurable,

0:19:55 > 0:19:57but isn't going to give them a headache to keep up together.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01Is that why you volunteered to come along here, because the family's got so much on their plate?

0:20:01 > 0:20:04What is going to be the result of this will be,

0:20:04 > 0:20:05I wouldn't say life-changing,

0:20:05 > 0:20:08but it will make a world of difference to these people.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10To be able to help anybody is good.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12To be able to help anybody for free is even better.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16We may have free help on this site, but we're not cheap.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20Whether it's installing proper drainage for Ryan's wet room,

0:20:20 > 0:20:23or a solid new floor, we're putting in quality stuff

0:20:23 > 0:20:25that's going to last.

0:20:25 > 0:20:30Just one more joist to come in here to go onto this hanger up here,

0:20:30 > 0:20:34and then we can actually put the floor down upstairs,

0:20:34 > 0:20:36and we'll have floors and walls back in again.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39So, despite all the troubles that we've had during today,

0:20:39 > 0:20:41it's starting to look the part.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Time to catch up with the chippies,

0:20:43 > 0:20:47who have made the huge job of replacing the rotten floor look easy.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- Good work, lads. - That's proper building.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53It's not what we expected, we expected it to be MDF everywhere.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55So why did you decide to come along and join in?

0:20:55 > 0:20:58I want to do it just to help them out.

0:20:58 > 0:21:02If it happened to me or my family, I'd just want these lads to help me out.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06I've never met this chap before, and I've been using his tools.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09We're just all mucking in. Absolutely brilliant.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13Without this kind of teamwork, we would never be able to work this fast.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16It's not all plain sailing, there are loads of new walls flying up,

0:21:16 > 0:21:19and Billy, our Jurassic Spark from the age of dinosaurs,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21is in a bit of a pickle about the wiring.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Erm, we're OK going downstairs, aren't we?

0:21:24 > 0:21:27You know, the thing he does every day, as a profession?

0:21:27 > 0:21:31We've got this special heating system that's wireless,

0:21:31 > 0:21:33- and what does that incur?- Well,

0:21:33 > 0:21:39with got to get Cat 5 from the valves on the heater system down

0:21:39 > 0:21:41- to the stat.- Cables?

0:21:41 > 0:21:43- Yeah.- For this wireless system,

0:21:43 > 0:21:48it needs eight cables coming up to an alarm box here.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51So, wireless is not really wireless any more, is it?

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Right, time for a coffee, Billy?

0:21:53 > 0:21:54Is it a wireless coffee?

0:21:55 > 0:21:58But there's no time for a coffee break for our other builders.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01The extension is being blocked up, ready for render,

0:22:01 > 0:22:03and the roof tiles are being laid.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06That means it's watertight and ready for some floors.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Getting this room all cleaned out.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11We're going to get the insulation down in here.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Then we're going to put a damp-proof membrane over the whole floor,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18and get the screed down in here tonight, which means we've got the finished floor in, which is amazing.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22We've got to get this all... We've got to get the roof insulated, boarded,

0:22:22 > 0:22:24all of the wiring in there as well, you know?

0:22:24 > 0:22:26So, even though this is a slow process,

0:22:26 > 0:22:29we've just got to keep moving at the same speed we started at.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31And there's a delivery round the front to help out.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33Hop to it, everyone.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Luckily, we've got a bit of young blood in to lug it round the back.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43I'm surprised you're stood here watching screeding,

0:22:43 > 0:22:44rather than being involved in screeding.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46We were younger.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49- Do you not miss it?- My back doesn't.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51- Does it not?- No.

0:22:51 > 0:22:52- How old are you?- 21.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54- How old are you?- 23, mate.

0:22:54 > 0:22:55- And how old are you?- 47.

0:22:55 > 0:22:56LAUGHTER

0:22:58 > 0:23:01On the end, yeah, that doesn't really work out, does it?

0:23:01 > 0:23:04To show you just how fast these boys are flying, here's a speeded up,

0:23:04 > 0:23:09entire screeded floor going in five seconds flat.

0:23:09 > 0:23:15Damp-proof membrane, insulation, screed, brand-new floor.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17I like this stage of the build,

0:23:17 > 0:23:20because you can see the house without its clothes on, if you like.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22You know, this is all going to get covered up with plasterboard,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25and then plaster and paint and so on and so forth,

0:23:25 > 0:23:27but for the moment you can actually see the skeleton of the house,

0:23:27 > 0:23:30and all its innards, its plumbing, its electrics.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33But it is our job now to cover it all up, as quick as possible.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37As we start a new day on site,

0:23:37 > 0:23:40whilst the plumbers install the heating and a new boiler in the loft,

0:23:40 > 0:23:43the plasterers are hiding Billy's electrics,

0:23:43 > 0:23:46and Gaby's attention is focused on Ryan's new bedroom.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Yeah, I want that, I want this vibe in here

0:23:49 > 0:23:53to feel completely different, and these double doors are going to be really important.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57You can see the old door here, so this is the space he would have had to have got through

0:23:57 > 0:23:58- before, this little bit here.- Yeah.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01- So we've doubled that... - And now we'll be able to roll the doors back...

0:24:01 > 0:24:04And because his wheelchair is larger than the average,

0:24:04 > 0:24:06so we need a massive -

0:24:06 > 0:24:09we need an 1,800 turning circle throughout this really small house.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12So that means that this now is all usable space,

0:24:12 > 0:24:14so we're really pleased with this.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17'The question is, are the measurements bang on,

0:24:17 > 0:24:18'or did we overdo the demolition?'

0:24:22 > 0:24:25I was sure... I thought we had two sliding doors.

0:24:25 > 0:24:281652 is there, so, basically, you have got two sliding doors,

0:24:28 > 0:24:30they just won't meet in the middle.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Our struggles with this room are nothing compared to Rachel's -

0:24:33 > 0:24:38she travels every day to see Ryan at hospital, and it's such a long way.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39Because she can't drive,

0:24:39 > 0:24:42she does the entire journey using public transport.

0:24:46 > 0:24:47It is tiring.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51But you've got to do it.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55I've got no choice - I've got to do it, because Ryan needs me there,

0:24:55 > 0:24:59and I know he copes better with what has happened to him if I am there.

0:25:01 > 0:25:06This journey now takes Rachel a staggering five hours of travel each day.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11When my mum was visiting once a week, it was not good.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13I like having her here.

0:25:13 > 0:25:18Rachel now does the five-hour trip five times a week to see Ryan.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Once there, she helps Ryan get washed and dressed with Sarah,

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Ryan's health care assistant.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28It's a necessary but undignified routine for Ryan,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31and he will only do it with those he really trusts.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35I prefer having my mum doing my care,

0:25:35 > 0:25:37because I know her and I feel more comfortable.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44I'd like to find out more about how Rachel has held this family together.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50How tough has it been for you and your husband to get through

0:25:50 > 0:25:53the last five years since Ryan was taken ill?

0:25:53 > 0:25:59It felt as though there was no end, that he would never come home.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01It is very stressful, but you do it.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03So how have you got through?

0:26:04 > 0:26:08- Just carrying on.- Do you ever think forward, and hope?

0:26:08 > 0:26:11What is it that you're hoping the future holds?

0:26:11 > 0:26:16Oh, Ryan's ultimate dream, apart from coming home, is to walk again.

0:26:16 > 0:26:21It would be a lot of hard work on Ryan's part,

0:26:21 > 0:26:23but because he wants it that much he will do it.

0:26:23 > 0:26:26- Will you make sure he does it? - Of course I will.

0:26:26 > 0:26:33- You seem really in your mind to have decided that your life is Ryan's life now.- Yes, it is.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36- Nothing for you at all? - No, I don't matter.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38It's only Ryan that matters.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40You do matter.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42I don't see myself like that.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Well, I know you don't, but that's part of what's so amazing about you.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48- Thank you.- How many people do you think could actually manage to have done

0:26:48 > 0:26:50what you've done for the five years?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I thought every mum would.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54Yeah. Every day, though.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56- All that distance.- No, but isn't that what life's about?

0:26:56 > 0:26:57Your family.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02So what will make you happy now?

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- Having Ryan home.- It comes back to the same thing every time, doesn't it?

0:27:05 > 0:27:08There's literally been nothing else in your mind for the last five years.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10No. Nothing at all.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12And you always believed it was going to happen?

0:27:12 > 0:27:16Yeah. Even if I had to chuck him over my shoulder and carry him home,

0:27:16 > 0:27:17he was coming home.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20And he's 6'3" and I'm only 5'2",

0:27:20 > 0:27:23so I don't know how I would have managed that.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26What do you make of the fact that all of these people have come out and joined in?

0:27:26 > 0:27:29It makes you realise that there are nice people out there,

0:27:29 > 0:27:32that are willing to help you if you ask.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34And at the end of the day, Ryan's coming home,

0:27:34 > 0:27:36and that is all this is about.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40You heard the message.

0:27:40 > 0:27:41Ryan's coming home.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44That's what's driving this steam train of a build.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47Now that the plumbers' and sparks' first fix is done,

0:27:47 > 0:27:49we've got to start patching the walls.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51It's a busy time for Chris.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54I might have to go and have a cup of tea in a minute.

0:27:54 > 0:27:55If I'm honest with you.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58And hope the fairies come in and it's done!

0:27:58 > 0:28:00Release the boarders!

0:28:03 > 0:28:07I recommend it, for anybody who ever gets a chance to do this - do it.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10You won't regret it. And I'll tell you what, you'll walk away with a buzz.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14This man's energy level is just unbelievable.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17Now that we're getting the walls finished,

0:28:17 > 0:28:18that means one thing for Gabby -

0:28:18 > 0:28:23she gets to find intricate and time-consuming ways of covering them.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27There's nothing like getting Mark in a good mood and then throwing

0:28:27 > 0:28:29a Gabrielle tile plan at him.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31- What've you got?- It's beautiful, isn't it?

0:28:31 > 0:28:33- It's a lovely glass tile. - That is beautiful.

0:28:33 > 0:28:35- Where is that going? - In the wet room.

0:28:35 > 0:28:36The splashback on the kitchen?

0:28:36 > 0:28:39- No, in the wet room.- There's not a splashback in the kitchen?- No.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41It's for all of the wet room?

0:28:41 > 0:28:42- Yeah.- Is it?

0:28:42 > 0:28:45- And they're that size.- No, the big ones.- And they're that size?!

0:28:45 > 0:28:47- They're that size.- Oh, they are that size, actually.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Look how excited Paul is about this.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53I am going to kill you. I can't believe it.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55I'm not sure Paul was that excited.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57Anyway, you've got to hand it to Gabby -

0:28:57 > 0:29:00she certainly knows how to pamper the family with luxurious,

0:29:00 > 0:29:02difficult and weird tiles.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05And Ryan's sliding doors are still causing us problems, I'm afraid.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08So we'll just double-check that one. What have you got there?

0:29:10 > 0:29:12What little problems has it thrown at you?

0:29:12 > 0:29:17It's tight on this one, so the door has to flush with the liner...

0:29:17 > 0:29:18- The liner?- ..ultimately, so.

0:29:18 > 0:29:19Yeah.

0:29:19 > 0:29:22It's a winner, though. It's going in.

0:29:22 > 0:29:23This lot don't seem fazed.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25You see, Bristol tradesmen just crack on.

0:29:28 > 0:29:29The garden might have been cut off,

0:29:29 > 0:29:33but the bearded, green-fingered team are doing their best to keep going.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36The tiny holes from the damp fix earlier are also being covered up,

0:29:36 > 0:29:39and - wow - check out those lightning borders.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41They've boarded a whole house in a day!

0:29:41 > 0:29:43Well done.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45APPLAUSE

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Plumbers are done, boiler and air circulation is finished,

0:29:48 > 0:29:52electrics in, and even Mark is happy.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55That's another box ticked. The roof's all done. They're just cleaning it all down.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58We're going to get the scaffolding taken away, get the rendering finished.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01I can't believe the speed this job's going at.

0:30:01 > 0:30:05If you thought that was quick, Chris has got a carefully worked-out plan for the plasterers.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08Open the doors, throw 12 plasterers in there...

0:30:08 > 0:30:11- That's it.- 15 bags of Multi Finish, and say, "Get on with it."

0:30:11 > 0:30:12Job done.

0:30:12 > 0:30:13Wow - look at them go.

0:30:13 > 0:30:18They're slapping it on faster and thicker than my make-up artist does - same colour, though.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20See, that's what you need.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21A bit of positivity.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25I think these West Country trades have earned themselves a builder's bacon bap.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30Ah, there you are. Can I interest you in a sausage, bacon, egg?

0:30:30 > 0:30:31No, can I have orange, please?

0:30:33 > 0:30:37- A coffee...- Would you like egg, bacon, sausage?

0:30:37 > 0:30:38Can I have an apple, please?

0:30:40 > 0:30:45An apple? Do think this is the nicest, poshest building site you've ever been on?

0:30:45 > 0:30:47- Thank you.- My pleasure.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49Anybody for a fruit tea, perhaps?

0:30:49 > 0:30:52Camomile? Anybody interested in a rooibos?

0:30:54 > 0:30:56- Mint?- Got any green tea over there?

0:30:56 > 0:30:57You, off the site.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59LAUGHTER

0:30:59 > 0:31:04'I'm into healthy eating like anybody else, but there's a line, and he just stepped over it.'

0:31:04 > 0:31:07Our own health Adonis Jules is almost ready for the lift.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10We're going to, erm,

0:31:10 > 0:31:13put drop kerbs here, directly in front of our access.

0:31:13 > 0:31:17Young Sam here's finishing off his bit of brick work here today.

0:31:17 > 0:31:19The boys over there are finishing off that wall.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21Then that's it. We've broke the back of this front area.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24They've turned out, and they've just smashed it.

0:31:24 > 0:31:28West Country, see. West Country boys, you can't beat it.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31Jules and his boys are working tirelessly to make access easier to

0:31:31 > 0:31:37the house. For Ryan, every day in hospital is a struggle.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39Ryan's health assistant, Sarah, knows this only too well.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43I get the impression that he's depressed at the moment.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45He's extremely depressed.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48He's an extremely sad young man.

0:31:48 > 0:31:52He doesn't have a life here, as such.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54He's not living - he's existing.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56And for any young man that's horrible.

0:31:56 > 0:31:57And getting home will change,

0:31:57 > 0:32:00and you think he'll attack his physio with more...

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I think he will. I think he will make...

0:32:03 > 0:32:06I mean, I go home with Ryan quite regularly on a Saturday,

0:32:06 > 0:32:11and even the difference on a Saturday with Ryan is a big deal.

0:32:11 > 0:32:12He's much more relaxed.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14His shoulders are drooped.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Where generally here Ryan won't communicate.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21A key part of Ryan's rehabilitation is visiting the hospital gym down

0:32:21 > 0:32:25the corridor, but if Ryan is feeling depressed he doesn't want to go.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30It's not that he's being grumpy or difficult, just sad and unmotivated.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35Hi, Ry!

0:32:35 > 0:32:37Are you ready to go up to the gym?

0:32:37 > 0:32:40I think they've set up for you to try and have a bit of football.

0:32:40 > 0:32:41No?

0:32:42 > 0:32:44Because of his mental health challenges,

0:32:44 > 0:32:48it's hard for even Ryan's speech and language therapist, Steph, to get him to go.

0:32:48 > 0:32:53It's fine if you don't want to do it, but give it a try.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55What do you reckon?

0:32:57 > 0:32:59Are you sure we can't tempt you?

0:32:59 > 0:33:00No, OK.

0:33:03 > 0:33:07It's clear getting him home could help to lift Ryan out of his depression,

0:33:07 > 0:33:10motivate him to work on his own mobility.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13So, as hard... You know, as much as you've been able to do for him,

0:33:13 > 0:33:16and I know you do amazing work here, it's pretty critical we get him home.

0:33:16 > 0:33:21It is. It is, you know, and for his mum, and his dad.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23How long have you been looking after him?

0:33:23 > 0:33:27Erm, I've been with Ryan just over three years now.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29So you must really get a bond going.

0:33:29 > 0:33:30You must be really fond of him,

0:33:30 > 0:33:33so whilst everyone's looking forward to him going home...

0:33:33 > 0:33:34It's heartbreaking at the same time.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36- Is it?- Yeah. - Are you going to miss him?

0:33:36 > 0:33:40- Loads.- You're a little bit emotional about that, aren't you?

0:33:41 > 0:33:45- He's a special kid.- It's pretty intense stuff you do with him.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48He's a huge part of this place, you know.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50Everybody wants him to go home,

0:33:50 > 0:33:53but at the same time nobody wants to say goodbye.

0:33:53 > 0:33:59Sarah's just one of an army of amazing carers all across the country looking after people.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02Back on site, the builders are giving it everything to make this build happen.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04They're not just changing lives -

0:34:04 > 0:34:06these plasterers are breaking records.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10They've only gone and finished all the plastering on the fourth day!

0:34:12 > 0:34:14Everyone's mucked in together.

0:34:14 > 0:34:18- Probably the best day of my working life.- What, really?- Yeah, it is.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22- 100%.- You know, you speak to anyone, it's just been unbelievable.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26We'll allow Chris a moment to wallow in his plastering majesty.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29And when it's all high-quality, there's no...

0:34:29 > 0:34:31Look at it.

0:34:31 > 0:34:34There's an old saying. If it generally looks right...

0:34:34 > 0:34:36Sorry - if it looks right, it generally is.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40Now, I'm not an expert, but generally speaking that doesn't look right.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43That's not just a little pop, is it?

0:34:43 > 0:34:46- He went through it.- Do you think...

0:34:46 > 0:34:48INDISTINCT REPLY

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Mark leads the investigation into the guilty party.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56- Who did that?- It's one of the plumbers finishing off the piping in the loft,

0:34:56 > 0:35:01but they seem strangely reluctant to step forward and accept blame.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03I only take a size eight.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05- You take a size eight! - And that's a size ten.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08- Right, OK. - LAUGHTER

0:35:08 > 0:35:10Chris, I found him through a process of elimination.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13Basically, all his mates stitched him up.

0:35:13 > 0:35:14Cut his feet off.

0:35:14 > 0:35:15Yeah.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20All right, let's get it fixed, then.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24The plaster is only just dry before tilers start in Ryan's wet room.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25They need to get on with it.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28There's a lot of wall, and a lot of Gabby's tiny tiles

0:35:28 > 0:35:29to cover them with.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33The upstairs bathroom is smaller and the tiles are much bigger so that

0:35:33 > 0:35:36shouldn't be a problem. Oh, no, hold on, wait -

0:35:36 > 0:35:40Gabby has brought in funky hexagon tiles from the future.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44Well, basically we can't cut these with our dry cutter,

0:35:44 > 0:35:47because when we scribe it, you pull it along the top bit,

0:35:47 > 0:35:49but it won't go into the groove.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51So we've got to go outside and wet cut every...

0:35:51 > 0:35:53- Every single one.- ..every tile.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56So it'll take about five times as long as it normally does.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59Yep, it will. These lads have the patience of a saint.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01As do the guys installing the bifold doors.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05These doors will open out into the garden to increase the space so Ryan

0:36:05 > 0:36:07can move more independently.

0:36:08 > 0:36:10Beautiful, eh?

0:36:11 > 0:36:14So, now the bifold doors are in, and the scaffold down,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17the gardeners are free to catch up a bit of time.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21A little birdie told me one of our gardeners is rather overqualified.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24I think we need to find out a little bit more.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26Did I hear you say he built satellites?

0:36:26 > 0:36:29Like, a satellite builder? Is that what you're saying?

0:36:29 > 0:36:30- Is he making that up?- No, no, true.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Satellites in space that he's worked on.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35A bit different, isn't it, building gardens and working in rocket science?

0:36:35 > 0:36:39Absolutely, but this isn't rocket science, that's the great thing about it.

0:36:39 > 0:36:40It's fantastic.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44Well, gardening may not be rocket science but it helps to have rocket scientists

0:36:44 > 0:36:45doing your gardening, plainly!

0:36:45 > 0:36:51And, of course, skilled trades installing Gabby's nifty kitchen and those amazing sliding doors of doom.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56Why are you laughing, Lee?

0:36:56 > 0:36:59- I don't know why I'm laughing, at all!- You think it should be higher?

0:36:59 > 0:37:02Yeah, yeah, I can't get my hand in there.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04With the plaster drying, the builders are booted out.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07Gabby's decorating team have been let loose to roll out the tricky

0:37:07 > 0:37:10asymmetrical wallpaper in Gemma's room.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Decorating is all about pampering, so we have arranged for Diane -

0:37:15 > 0:37:19a very talented decorative artist - to paint Rachel's master bedroom.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22It's a technique from a bygone era.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24It was Victorian British, wasn't it?

0:37:24 > 0:37:27- Yeah.- When did it start? - 18th century.- 18th century?- Yeah.

0:37:27 > 0:37:33- Royalty, aristocrats. - Because this is hand-painted, we're not having to fit...

0:37:33 > 0:37:37The scale and everything we've been working with is perfect for this room.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40So it's bespoke and perfect, so it doesn't look ridiculous,

0:37:40 > 0:37:44having an over-scale paper with lower ceilings.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47She's in such demand, she's even done walls for Lady Gaga,

0:37:47 > 0:37:50but she's not our only esteemed decorator.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53Yeah, Andy works in Buckingham Palace.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55- Does he?- Yeah.- Does he, really?

0:37:55 > 0:37:57I don't work in Buckingham Palace.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59I've worked in Buckingham Palace.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02- What do you do?- It was part of an interview for a job.

0:38:02 > 0:38:05Because there's only one decorator, actually, at Buckingham Palace,

0:38:05 > 0:38:09that does all the internal work. But I had to think of the travelling and, unfortunately,

0:38:09 > 0:38:11the salary didn't cover the travelling costs.

0:38:11 > 0:38:15- Wow!- So he said no to the Queen but yes to us!

0:38:15 > 0:38:17- Ha-ha!- Hurray!

0:38:19 > 0:38:22For this family, only the best will do.

0:38:22 > 0:38:24Because it has been tough.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27And Ryan's dad has seen his whole world turned on its head.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31So, when you look at Ryan now, what do you see?

0:38:33 > 0:38:34I see my son.

0:38:34 > 0:38:39I see my son. I see my son not as fit and able as what he used to do,

0:38:39 > 0:38:41but he's still my son. He will always be my son.

0:38:41 > 0:38:45And his life is much more difficult than mine.

0:38:45 > 0:38:47Because, if you go back a few years,

0:38:47 > 0:38:50life was bumbling along very nicely and, all of a sudden,

0:38:50 > 0:38:52it's like someone's just ripped the whole thing up.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55It hits you like a bomb. Hits you like a bomb.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58And the first year, the first couple of months, I was just numb.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00I was just, what's going to happen?

0:39:00 > 0:39:02You just think you're going to get back to a normal life again.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04What do you want for him?

0:39:04 > 0:39:05I want him home.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08I want him home. He wants to come home.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10Rachel dearly wants him home.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14Um, you talk about Rachel very powerfully.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16She's a rock.

0:39:19 > 0:39:20She...

0:39:22 > 0:39:24What she does for her family is beyond...

0:39:24 > 0:39:25She's...

0:39:27 > 0:39:28She's amazing.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32So I guess it must have hit her pretty hard, when all this started.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37She doesn't show it, but she must feel it.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39Obviously, she must feel it. But she doesn't show it.

0:39:40 > 0:39:41She doesn't show it.

0:39:41 > 0:39:45I'm really pleased that this is happening for you.

0:39:45 > 0:39:46That's his...

0:39:46 > 0:39:47His only wish is to come home.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51And with the help of you guys, which we appreciate so much,

0:39:51 > 0:39:54and we are highly honoured, it's going to happen.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57Well, we're honoured to help.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59With only one day left on the build,

0:39:59 > 0:40:03these fantastic chaps have managed to get all the big stuff done -

0:40:03 > 0:40:05kitchen units, tiling, flooring.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07It's just the fiddly stuff now.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10After all that worry about Ryan's doors...

0:40:10 > 0:40:13Hurray! Thanks, Lee!

0:40:13 > 0:40:17That is... Lee has been dealing with the doors of doom.

0:40:17 > 0:40:18Yeah, the doors of doom.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21- Bit of trouble?- A little bit, yeah, but we got over it.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23The breakfast bar has arrived.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26It's the perfect fit and the perfect place for the family to hang out

0:40:26 > 0:40:28together and put...

0:40:28 > 0:40:32- Make pastries on that. - Do you like making a bit of pastry,

0:40:32 > 0:40:34- darling?- Yeah.- What's your speciality?

0:40:34 > 0:40:37- Vol-au-vents.- Oh, vol-au-vents?

0:40:37 > 0:40:39Vol-au-vents, don't you know!

0:40:39 > 0:40:41I told you Bristol was fancy!

0:40:41 > 0:40:43This lot seem to have outdone themselves.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46Mike, am I wrong in thinking...

0:40:46 > 0:40:48No, I don't want to say it, OK... No, I...

0:40:48 > 0:40:51Say it. For goodness' sake. We haven't got all day.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55- We've got to be finished shortly. - We're ahead, that's what I'm saying, we're ahead.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57- Yeah.- We're going to finish early. - We're doing really well.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00And you're not very often wrong, is he?

0:41:00 > 0:41:02Sh! Mark, don't say it, you'll curse us all!

0:41:02 > 0:41:04We're going to be out the door by four o'clock today.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08- What are you doing? - And it's all over to Gabrielle then.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10I knew I shouldn't have said anything.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13- Four o'clock is only two hours away. - We've done everything, we've made the home...

0:41:13 > 0:41:16- No, no!- We've done the garden. We've done the kitchen.- Shut up!

0:41:16 > 0:41:19- Stop it!- We're trying to get out the door by four o'clock today. - Yeah.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22- Nice one.- Mark, it's not good to try and finish early.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24Everyone is going to take their foot off the pedal!

0:41:24 > 0:41:26How do you feel about four o'clock today?

0:41:26 > 0:41:28You know, for us to be ahead and then the plasterers...

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Now even the posh wallpaper man is saying it.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34You know, it just kind of...domino effect, so we're in a good place.

0:41:34 > 0:41:35- See what I mean?- Job done!

0:41:37 > 0:41:42See? Now, look. It was all going so well but that looks like a freshly

0:41:42 > 0:41:46plastered and painted wall being attacked by firefighters.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48You look very beautiful today.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49Mark?

0:41:49 > 0:41:51You've made a hideous mistake, haven't you?

0:41:53 > 0:41:56Don't give me... No, don't give me a ginger beard!

0:41:58 > 0:42:00Imagine if Santa was ginger.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Santa might well have been ginger.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04- He's just aged.- You'd get loads of work at Christmas!

0:42:04 > 0:42:06Go on, say that.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10Say that, go on, say it!

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Ho, ho, ho. Stop distracting me!

0:42:12 > 0:42:14Go and fix everything!

0:42:14 > 0:42:19- Get out!- Not even a ginger Santa can make us finish at four o'clock.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24But with a mammoth effort from everyone...

0:42:26 > 0:42:30- Oh!- ..we're not far from the finish line and a few small victories.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32But does it work in the other sink?

0:42:35 > 0:42:38It does! It does! Amazing.

0:42:38 > 0:42:39It's a miracle!

0:42:40 > 0:42:42Gabby's on finishing touches...

0:42:42 > 0:42:44Those look really, really good.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46..and finishing touchy-feelies.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50- Loved today. - Oh, I loved today as well.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52I nearly went in for a full-on snog there by mistake.

0:42:52 > 0:42:54I sort of missed my angle!

0:42:54 > 0:42:58I don't want to do it again in a hurry, but...

0:42:58 > 0:43:02But I will say, if you're back in Bristol, I'll be there.

0:43:02 > 0:43:07- You will.- Yeah.- That is the realest explanation of the show I've heard in a long time.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09We're all knackered, I don't want to do it again in a hurry,

0:43:09 > 0:43:11but if you come back, give me a call.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13Amazing.

0:43:13 > 0:43:14That's our team for you.

0:43:14 > 0:43:18Work until they drop and then get up and keep going.

0:43:18 > 0:43:20Bristol, we salute you!

0:43:21 > 0:43:24We talked a lot about finishing early on this one, didn't we?

0:43:24 > 0:43:25We talked a lot about it.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29And it has happened, because now is officially the time when we're supposed to finish

0:43:29 > 0:43:31and, as you can see, there are people here.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34Listen to the sound... The sound of work still going on in the background.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37And we reckon that going to go on until about 11 o'clock tonight

0:43:37 > 0:43:40and the interior's going to get done about 9.30.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42These things never go the way you think, do they?

0:43:44 > 0:43:46Well, at least Billy has finished on time.

0:43:46 > 0:43:50His electrics are giving some much-needed light to the gardeners.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52ELECTRICAL FIZZ

0:43:52 > 0:43:53- Oh, no.- Billy!

0:43:59 > 0:44:03Nine days ago, we came to Bristol to meet a family shattered by a tragic

0:44:03 > 0:44:06head injury and a son trapped in hospital.

0:44:07 > 0:44:11It just came out of the blue, how serious it was.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15It hits you like a bomb. You just think you're going to get back to normal life again.

0:44:16 > 0:44:18Ryan is desperately unhappy in hospital,

0:44:18 > 0:44:22even with his mum travelling up five times a week to see him.

0:44:24 > 0:44:26Being in hospital all the time is boring.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31Not seeing my family all the time is not good.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33I miss them.

0:44:33 > 0:44:36Financially and physically it has put a strain on us, yes. It certainly has.

0:44:36 > 0:44:38Shed a tear every day.

0:44:39 > 0:44:43They couldn't bring him home because their cramped house couldn't

0:44:43 > 0:44:45accommodate Ryan and his wheelchair.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50Sometimes I cry walking up the road because I know he wants to come with me.

0:44:52 > 0:44:56They wanted to live together but couldn't make their house work.

0:44:56 > 0:45:00That was until builders and trades came together from all over the south-west

0:45:00 > 0:45:02to help adapt their home.

0:45:03 > 0:45:05And this is what they pulled off.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11We took a cramped, mid-terrace house and completely renovated it from top

0:45:11 > 0:45:12to bottom.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16Where the old kitchen was, we've added an extension,

0:45:16 > 0:45:20creating a new open space where the family can relax.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24We've also provided blinds for the match days

0:45:24 > 0:45:26as Ryan loves to watch his football on TV.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32Right next to it, we fitted a brand-new galley kitchen

0:45:32 > 0:45:35with a breakfast bar and all the mod cons.

0:45:37 > 0:45:41The old, mouldy living area is now a fully-equipped bedroom for Ryan

0:45:41 > 0:45:45with dark wallpapered interior, a bespoke hospital bed,

0:45:45 > 0:45:47automated lights and plenty of storage.

0:45:49 > 0:45:53The unused dining room has become an en-suite wet room and shower to

0:45:53 > 0:45:55maintain his comfort and dignity,

0:45:55 > 0:45:58all accessible by electric lift winch.

0:46:00 > 0:46:04Upstairs, the leaky bathroom and its rotten floor has been pulled out and

0:46:04 > 0:46:06replaced with a brand-new bathroom.

0:46:06 > 0:46:09This damp problem has been fixed for good.

0:46:10 > 0:46:14All the bedrooms upstairs have been beautifully redesigned.

0:46:14 > 0:46:18Rachel and Dave's room has been redecorated in a Victorian style

0:46:18 > 0:46:20with a custom velvet headboard

0:46:20 > 0:46:23and hand-painted flower mural that perfectly

0:46:23 > 0:46:26frames a restful space where they can sleep well,

0:46:26 > 0:46:28knowing Ryan is just downstairs.

0:46:30 > 0:46:34Lastly, the neglected garden has been turned into an accessible and

0:46:34 > 0:46:35private paved area.

0:46:36 > 0:46:40The huge bifold doors in the living room connect to the garden,

0:46:40 > 0:46:43doubling the living space for Ryan.

0:46:43 > 0:46:45A perfect way to spend more family time together.

0:46:47 > 0:46:51The hard-grafting Bristol trades have given this family the perfect space

0:46:51 > 0:46:54to be able to get their son home from hospital.

0:46:57 > 0:47:00You kind of know that your house is not going to be the house you've been in the last 26 years.

0:47:00 > 0:47:02Yes, we do, yes.

0:47:02 > 0:47:06- Yeah.- We had to change it a lot, so, if you're ready...

0:47:06 > 0:47:07Open your eyes.

0:47:09 > 0:47:10- Wow!- Oh, my God.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16- Wow!- Is this our house?

0:47:18 > 0:47:19Absolutely amazing.

0:47:21 > 0:47:23- I love it.- Do you?

0:47:23 > 0:47:26- Do you love it?- Yes. - Oh, I'm so pleased.- Fantastic.

0:47:27 > 0:47:31- This is the extension. This is the bit of the house that didn't used to be here.- Oh.

0:47:32 > 0:47:34- Have a seat on your sofa.- Amazing.

0:47:36 > 0:47:38Sit where you are going to snuggle up as a family.

0:47:39 > 0:47:41It is a lovely, warm house.

0:47:41 > 0:47:42It's all insulated.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47And we've dealt with the mould problem so that's not going to come back.

0:47:47 > 0:47:51- That's amazing.- Yeah, loads of space for Ryan as well.

0:47:51 > 0:47:53- That's the point, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:47:53 > 0:47:54Ryan is going to love this.

0:47:56 > 0:47:58Hop up, then, and go through to your kitchen.

0:48:00 > 0:48:03I just don't know what to say.

0:48:03 > 0:48:05I can't believe that you've done all this.

0:48:05 > 0:48:09- In nine days.- Can you imagine, can you picture the family in here?

0:48:09 > 0:48:11- Absolutely.- Yes, I can, yeah.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Especially Gemma, up to the breakfast bar.

0:48:14 > 0:48:15She's always wanted one.

0:48:15 > 0:48:17- Is that right?- Yeah.

0:48:17 > 0:48:19Just so that she could sit and have a chat with you.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21- Yeah.- Well, there you go.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24Right, let's show you around the rest of the place.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26- Upstairs, I think, next.- Thank you.

0:48:31 > 0:48:33- Oh, that's nice.- Oh, wow.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35- That's lovely.- Because you like Victorian stuff, don't you?

0:48:35 > 0:48:37Yeah. It's very Victorian, yeah.

0:48:37 > 0:48:38This is lovely.

0:48:43 > 0:48:44Wow!

0:48:47 > 0:48:49That is lovely.

0:48:49 > 0:48:50That's not wallpaper on the walls.

0:48:50 > 0:48:54That's hand-painted by our artist, Anne, who's just...

0:48:54 > 0:48:58She's amazing. She just came in and created that on the wall to fit

0:48:58 > 0:49:01- around your bed. - Absolutely marvellous.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03Somewhere to come at the end of the day.

0:49:03 > 0:49:07- To relax.- You can't really burn out, I mean,

0:49:07 > 0:49:10so this is a place for you to come and relax.

0:49:10 > 0:49:12Yeah. I always put myself last.

0:49:12 > 0:49:15- Yeah, she does.- Will this help you put yourself a little bit further up

0:49:15 > 0:49:18- the order?- To come to this room, yes.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25Now Rachel and Dave get to see the most important room for them in

0:49:25 > 0:49:27the whole house. Ryan's room.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34- Oh, my word.- Oh, wow!

0:49:35 > 0:49:37Absolutely amazing.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40- Beautiful.- Oh, he's going to love this.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43- What a room.- The reason for the big double doors, by the way,

0:49:43 > 0:49:45is because of the length of the wheelchair.

0:49:45 > 0:49:47- Yeah.- And if we'd used swinging,

0:49:47 > 0:49:50opening doors it would have been in the way of the space as well, so,

0:49:50 > 0:49:53by tucking them away in the walls...

0:49:53 > 0:49:54You get a lot more space.

0:49:54 > 0:49:55Perfect.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58We wanted to give him something that was proper manly, you know?

0:49:58 > 0:50:01- Yes.- Not hospitally, but manly.

0:50:01 > 0:50:02Absolutely gorgeous.

0:50:02 > 0:50:05The track is really important because he's a big lad,

0:50:05 > 0:50:08not easy to shift around, so it's important that you have some

0:50:08 > 0:50:10tracks to be able to lift him and take him through to the bathroom.

0:50:11 > 0:50:13How lovely is this?

0:50:16 > 0:50:18- Wow!- This is amazing.

0:50:18 > 0:50:19Absolutely stunning.

0:50:19 > 0:50:21He might actually want to have a shower, now!

0:50:21 > 0:50:23Wow!

0:50:23 > 0:50:26This is a wonderful space. What a transformation.

0:50:26 > 0:50:29- It's fantastic. - We can't thank you enough.

0:50:29 > 0:50:31Ryan's coming home.

0:50:31 > 0:50:32At last, Ryan's coming home.

0:50:34 > 0:50:38All the trades have gathered to welcome Ryan into the home they worked so hard on.

0:50:41 > 0:50:45It'll be the first time since he's been to hospital that Ryan has taken

0:50:45 > 0:50:47himself, unaided, through the front door.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01- Welcome home.- Welcome home, Ryan.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03Five years. Welcome home, buddy.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09After five years away, Ryan isn't hanging about.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17Oh, my gosh!

0:51:17 > 0:51:18Look at it.

0:51:20 > 0:51:22- RYAN:- I can't believe this is my house.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Well, it has changed a bit. There is no doubt that it has changed a bit.

0:51:28 > 0:51:32This is just Ryan's room. Still got the whole house to come!

0:51:32 > 0:51:36- RYAN:- I love it.- I think we're going to get stuck on that one, aren't we?

0:51:36 > 0:51:39You need to go and check, yeah? Go on.

0:51:39 > 0:51:41You see, Ryan has to have his carer with him at all times,

0:51:41 > 0:51:44and there are various medical things that need to be done during

0:51:44 > 0:51:46- the course of... Is that it, all done?- Yes, all done.

0:51:46 > 0:51:48Lovely. Thank you.

0:51:48 > 0:51:50And with fresh batteries in his life-support system,

0:51:50 > 0:51:51the tour continues.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Ryan, so what you want to do is swing left and then you're going right,

0:51:54 > 0:51:57- you're going down the corridor, yeah.- It's amazing!

0:51:57 > 0:52:01Ryan, for you, what we've done is we decided to make this into the

0:52:01 > 0:52:02ultimate television area.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04So we've got a big-screen TV.

0:52:04 > 0:52:05We've got blackout blinds.

0:52:05 > 0:52:09The blinds on the skylights are automated as well so you can block all the light out,

0:52:09 > 0:52:11so you can have a proper movie night,

0:52:11 > 0:52:13watch the sport or whatever.

0:52:13 > 0:52:14- RYAN:- I love it. I love it.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17Double love it. All right, cool.

0:52:17 > 0:52:21- Smashing.- It just feels like home, already.

0:52:21 > 0:52:24It's time to show Ryan's siblings their rooms.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25Darren, first.

0:52:25 > 0:52:27Right, this is your space.

0:52:27 > 0:52:29Oh, wow, this looks incredible.

0:52:29 > 0:52:31- Proper bachelor pad.- Yes, it is.

0:52:31 > 0:52:32Yeah.

0:52:34 > 0:52:35Next up, Gemma's room.

0:52:37 > 0:52:43Whoa! It's amazing what you've been able to do to such a small room.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45- I know.- Oh!

0:52:45 > 0:52:46I've never...

0:52:47 > 0:52:49- I'm OK, I'm just...- Emotional?

0:52:49 > 0:52:50Very emotional.

0:52:50 > 0:52:53All I was really expecting was for you to cater to Ryan.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57All we ever wanted was for Ryan to come home.

0:52:57 > 0:53:01It is amazing what you've been able to do in nine days.

0:53:01 > 0:53:04We wouldn't have been able to do this in about nine years, probably!

0:53:06 > 0:53:08- Happy?- Very much happy, thank you.

0:53:08 > 0:53:11You're not much of a huggy family, but if I sent your mum in now,

0:53:11 > 0:53:13- would you give her a hug?- Yes!

0:53:15 > 0:53:16Right.

0:53:16 > 0:53:18- Right, Gem, do you like it? - Love it!

0:53:20 > 0:53:21Right, this is for you.

0:53:21 > 0:53:26- Mm-hm.- For everything you've put up with, with me not being here,

0:53:26 > 0:53:28this is all for you.

0:53:31 > 0:53:32Don't cry!

0:53:34 > 0:53:35- Happy?- Very much.

0:53:35 > 0:53:37Come on, let's get you all back downstairs.

0:53:37 > 0:53:38Three, two, one, go.

0:53:40 > 0:53:43- Oh, it's lovely.- Wow.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46- RYAN:- I really love it.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48- Oh, well done.- Oh, you've moved on to "really love it"!

0:53:48 > 0:53:50I'm really impressed. That's great.

0:53:57 > 0:53:59Look at you. You're an emotional wreck.

0:53:59 > 0:54:00Yes! Mind you, I always am.

0:54:02 > 0:54:04I thought you were all supposed to be professional and...

0:54:04 > 0:54:08We are, but there's so much love for him.

0:54:08 > 0:54:09It means so much to get him home.

0:54:09 > 0:54:12Yeah. Have we done all right?

0:54:12 > 0:54:14Brilliant. Absolutely amazing.

0:54:14 > 0:54:16The whole thing's really amazing.

0:54:18 > 0:54:20Just looking at them now...

0:54:21 > 0:54:23..as a family, sat in their back garden...

0:54:26 > 0:54:28That's how it should be, really, isn't it?

0:54:28 > 0:54:29Yeah.

0:54:29 > 0:54:31As much as you've done amazing things for him...

0:54:31 > 0:54:35- Yeah.- You've got to kind of let him go, now.- That's what he needs, yeah.

0:54:38 > 0:54:39It's beautiful to watch.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45It is, isn't it? The simplest things.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47How little we value the simplest things.

0:54:47 > 0:54:48APPLAUSE

0:55:03 > 0:55:05This is Ryan's words of thanks.

0:55:05 > 0:55:07"All I wanted is to come home and be with my family.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10"I miss my parents, brother and sister every day

0:55:10 > 0:55:14"and have found it hard to cope knowing I can't be with them all,

0:55:14 > 0:55:16"or speak to them when I want to.

0:55:16 > 0:55:18"The last five years have been the hardest of my life.

0:55:18 > 0:55:21"I was ripped away from my family because of what happened to me,

0:55:21 > 0:55:22"but you have brought me home.

0:55:22 > 0:55:24"You will never know..."

0:55:24 > 0:55:25HE CLEARS HIS THROAT

0:55:31 > 0:55:32I'm not sure I can do this!

0:55:34 > 0:55:36"Thank you for what you've done for me.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38"You will never know the difference this will make to my life,

0:55:38 > 0:55:41"allowing me to once again be with my family.

0:55:41 > 0:55:45"We can all look to the future together now and won't feel so alone.

0:55:45 > 0:55:48"I can't believe this is real, but I am finally home."

0:55:48 > 0:55:49And then he's written...

0:55:50 > 0:55:53Don't know whether you can see it there. "I'm home."

0:56:01 > 0:56:05What you've achieved in there in nine days is absolutely amazing.

0:56:05 > 0:56:07We cannot believe it.

0:56:07 > 0:56:08We are so chuffed with it.

0:56:08 > 0:56:11Five years ago, when this happened to this boy...

0:56:13 > 0:56:15We never thought we'd get him home.

0:56:16 > 0:56:18You're amazing. Every one of you.

0:56:18 > 0:56:19Fantastic.

0:56:35 > 0:56:36Wet room's amazing.

0:56:39 > 0:56:42You know, when Ryan was taken so very seriously ill,

0:56:42 > 0:56:44the medical profession stepped in and did what they do.

0:56:44 > 0:56:47They looked after him, and they've been looking after him for five years.

0:56:47 > 0:56:50But they couldn't get him home. It took the skills of an electrician

0:56:50 > 0:56:55and a plumber and a bricklayer and a plasterer to get him back to his family.

0:56:55 > 0:56:57And sitting there watching him in the back garden,

0:56:57 > 0:57:01just listening to the conversation round him, that very small thing,

0:57:01 > 0:57:05for me, epitomises what a huge thing has been done here.

0:57:05 > 0:57:07Something we take for granted.

0:57:07 > 0:57:09You know, we can't help everyone,

0:57:09 > 0:57:12but everyone can use their skills to help someone.

0:57:16 > 0:57:18MUSIC DROWNS SPEECH
