0:00:02 > 0:00:05We all want our children to have a carefree childhood.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10Growing up happy, protected and supported

0:00:10 > 0:00:13is something most of us take for granted.

0:00:13 > 0:00:18But today the number of children in care in the UK is 90,000

0:00:18 > 0:00:20and it's rising.

0:00:20 > 0:00:25Many have had tough childhoods and can feel isolated and alone.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27People do give up on you and it's hard

0:00:27 > 0:00:30because I keep thinking that I'm just going to get dropped again.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Teenagers have to leave care when they reach adulthood

0:00:33 > 0:00:38and can find themselves totally unprepared for the outside world.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40I was pretty much homeless.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42I had to start my life again.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46With around a third of care leavers experiencing homelessness

0:00:46 > 0:00:48within the first two years of leaving,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50this is a problem of national importance.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53It's about going into the big wide world and some of those people

0:00:53 > 0:00:54aren't ready for that.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Which is why we've teamed up with Children In Need in Swansea

0:00:57 > 0:00:59to build them a lifeline here,

0:00:59 > 0:01:00a place offering support

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and the chance to learn the skills to get on.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Our job is to be the constant, the family that they long for.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10But we've got a mountain to climb.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14In fact, it's the biggest single building we've ever attempted,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18with a community centre and studio apartments for care leavers,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21and this time we've got 11 days to do it.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23It's going to be epic.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25Timber!

0:01:27 > 0:01:29With over 800 volunteers...

0:01:29 > 0:01:32It's like Piccadilly Circus here this morning.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33We'll be battling the elements...

0:01:33 > 0:01:36The building has flooded right through every floor.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40..but with a whole lot of love on site...

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Oh, this is something special.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45..no matter how tough it gets...

0:01:45 > 0:01:46Oh!

0:01:48 > 0:01:50..it's worth every minute.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53There isn't enough out there for these young people,

0:01:53 > 0:01:57so for you to come in and do this is absolutely amazing.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58Just a massive thank you.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01Because this one is so ambitious,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03we have 11 days to do the build,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06but we are going to need a huge Welsh army to help us out.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Pudsey, have you got any friends around here? Wow!

0:02:10 > 0:02:14This is DIY SOS: The Big Build for Children In Need!

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Kyle lives in Swansea

0:02:31 > 0:02:36and like most 17-year-olds he's making plans for his future.

0:02:38 > 0:02:39I want to travel a lot.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Yeah, that's my ultimate goal, going backpacking

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and finding my own way around the world,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46like trains and stuff, that would be pretty cool.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50But unlike most teenagers, Kyle spent his childhood in care,

0:02:50 > 0:02:52going from placement to placement.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56I've been in around ten to 15 different homes.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Saying it doesn't really seem that much

0:02:58 > 0:03:01but being in different houses and living with different families,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04it is a lot.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07I remember being quite scared with my first placement.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11My childhood was very disturbed

0:03:11 > 0:03:16because I never really had a chance to settle properly somewhere

0:03:16 > 0:03:17before I got moved.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Like many children who have been in care,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24the lack of a constant family home has affected Kyle deeply.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I struggle to connect with people on an emotional level

0:03:27 > 0:03:31because I keep thinking that I'm just going to get dropped again.

0:03:35 > 0:03:36For 21-year-old Ellen,

0:03:36 > 0:03:40being in care meant spending her teenage years in a children's home.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43The hardest part about being in care

0:03:43 > 0:03:45is when no-one recognises you're there.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49If I could change what had happened,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51not to go into care, I would.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Spending time in care can leave young people feeling cut off

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and worthless, without the skills needed to move on when they leave.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Working with children in care for the past five years

0:04:04 > 0:04:07through her charity, the Roots Foundation Wales,

0:04:07 > 0:04:08is Emma Lewis.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11She's seen stories like Kyle's and Ellen's all too often.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The process of leaving care is quite a traumatic one

0:04:14 > 0:04:17for many young people, and it's often the time that young people

0:04:17 > 0:04:20fall into crisis because the support networks stop around them.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24For young people who have had tough enough lives already,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26it's a difficult and critical time.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29A third of care leavers end up homeless.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32It was kind of difficult to live with family members

0:04:32 > 0:04:34and I stayed in a tent for a while

0:04:34 > 0:04:36because there was nowhere else to stay.

0:04:38 > 0:04:44From the time I was 17 to the age of 20, I was pretty much homeless.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48I had to, you know, I had to start my life again,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51and that's when Emma came into place and she got me this place

0:04:51 > 0:04:52within a week.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55She got me the property so I can call something home.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Emma set up Roots Foundation charity five years ago

0:04:58 > 0:05:02from the back of her car to help young people in care.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06It's now a thriving drop-in centre for children in care

0:05:06 > 0:05:10and care leavers, thanks in part to funding by Children In Need.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Our job is to be the constant, the family that they long for,

0:05:14 > 0:05:15to offer that support,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17and it is a bit controversial but we actually love our clients,

0:05:17 > 0:05:19and I think they need to know that,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21that we absolutely love them and that we care for them.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25I like being here because it's so fun.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I feel like one big family.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32Emma and her team offer counselling, support and workshops

0:05:32 > 0:05:35to teach the children the life skills they'll need

0:05:35 > 0:05:37as they grow up.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41Now Emma has an idea that could help those leaving care.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44It's always been our wish to have the opportunity

0:05:44 > 0:05:46to have accommodation for immediate care leavers,

0:05:46 > 0:05:47to offer that one-to-one support,

0:05:47 > 0:05:52that journey along their independent living, would be amazing.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56But that's just the dream as Roots HQ is currently a tumbledown hut,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59that can only offer important but limited help.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02We are limited by numbers in regards to how many we can get in here.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04It can feel quite cramped and so given the opportunity

0:06:04 > 0:06:06to have bigger space, we could have more staff,

0:06:06 > 0:06:09we could have more young people accessing it in different areas.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13All we want is somewhere where we can teach young people

0:06:13 > 0:06:17they can leave care quite confidently, that they can budget,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21pay their electricity bills and that they can cook meals from scratch.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23The kitchen is so small and inadequate

0:06:23 > 0:06:25that we can't even teach cooking skills.

0:06:25 > 0:06:26We haven't even got a cooker.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28It could be so much better.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31We're here to make that happen but we're going to need

0:06:31 > 0:06:33something of a miracle and a much bigger hut.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37All right, shall we begin the countdown and get the digger going?

0:06:37 > 0:06:41- Yes.- Great, hold on. You sure? - Yes!- Two, one!

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Oh, yes, we're going to have to rip this down and start again.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Well, we've got no choice now.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Just a month before the build,

0:06:56 > 0:06:59we demolished the old hut in Swansea and prepared the ground

0:06:59 > 0:07:03for the foundations, thanks to lots of lovely volunteers.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07We levelled the ground and had to bore 70-metre test holes

0:07:07 > 0:07:11in preparation for 100 cubic metres of concrete for the base,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13all to get ready for the 11-day build.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19I brought Emma down for the start of day one,

0:07:19 > 0:07:21to see the enormous effort so far.

0:07:21 > 0:07:22Oh, my goodness.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Pretty big, isn't it?

0:07:24 > 0:07:26It's ridiculous already.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29At the moment all we've got is a concrete base,

0:07:29 > 0:07:31but what you can see from here is the size of the thing.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33- It's huge.- Yeah.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36- It's going to be beautiful. - Yeah, and do you know what?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Our children need something beautiful.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42They need somewhere where they can play and they can be safe

0:07:42 > 0:07:46and, you know, they've had the most horrendous childhoods,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48a lot of our children, and they deserve to laugh

0:07:48 > 0:07:51and I think a building such as this is going to be amazing.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Well, we're going to build you something that will give you

0:07:54 > 0:07:56the tools you need to be able to carry on your amazing work.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59- That would be amazing.- Would you like to meet some of the people

0:07:59 > 0:08:01- that have...- I would love to meet some of the people.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03And here they come! Hundreds of volunteers

0:08:03 > 0:08:06donating supplies and skills from Swansea and all over the UK.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12I want to look you all in the eye and say thank you very, very much, everyone.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16Yes, they're ready to get the job done in breakneck time.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18This is the biggest building we have ever attempted.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Just to be clear, between the community centre and studio flats,

0:08:22 > 0:08:25two parts to this, it will have 20 separate rooms.

0:08:25 > 0:08:26It's ridiculous! It's huge!

0:08:26 > 0:08:29It's like Piccadilly Circus here this morning.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32And day one is all about getting the timber frame up,

0:08:32 > 0:08:36with 5,200 metres of wood to create these walls,

0:08:36 > 0:08:39a job that normally takes eight days,

0:08:39 > 0:08:40and we need it done in just one.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45So having said hello to everyone, I've gone off to use the site loo,

0:08:45 > 0:08:47turned around and they've already started putting panels up

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and the building's started on the far side there. Amazing.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Shall we talk about the size of this?

0:08:52 > 0:08:53Yeah! Yeah, it's good, isn't it?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55It goes on forever. It's vast.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58- It's massive.- It's over 300 square metres.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00- Is it really?- Which is basically the size of a tennis court.

0:09:00 > 0:09:01We're hoping by the end of tomorrow

0:09:01 > 0:09:04we will actually have all the roof on and it will be watertight

0:09:04 > 0:09:06because we're expecting wain... rain at the weekend.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09And Wayne. Are you expecting Wayne to come down with the rain?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- Wayne is bringing some wain with him.- Is he? Good.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Until we get the roof on, we need it to stay dry,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16but this being Wales, there's not much hope of that.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18We'll have this up, though, won't we?

0:09:18 > 0:09:20- It will be all right? - We'll be done by dinner time.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Us Welsh boys can do that. Easy, it's easy.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But as there isn't actually a building there yet,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29not everyone has a job to do.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31I've seen you run the cables for everybody,

0:09:31 > 0:09:34but there's nothing you can do for the next couple of days, is there?

0:09:34 > 0:09:36I can make tea, but...

0:09:36 > 0:09:41- Well...- ..above all that, I went away and done my digger licence,

0:09:41 > 0:09:45three days away and now I can drive a digger.

0:09:45 > 0:09:46So you know how this thing works?

0:09:46 > 0:09:48I can't even open the door.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51I was just looking at that. It's not a great start, is it, to be fair?

0:09:51 > 0:09:52No, it's not the best start.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54I look forward to seeing this.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56No problem. I'm looking forward to doing it.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59From the hopeless to the hopeful,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02as we get the vibrant and colourful Sophie Robinson

0:10:02 > 0:10:05taking on the challenge of designing this epic centre.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07You're going in there, are you?

0:10:07 > 0:10:09And there's a lot to think about.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12I've had a look at the spec for this building and it's amazing.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14We've really upscaled on this, haven't we?

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Yeah. And yet I don't want it to feel like an institution.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18I don't want it to feel like your average community centre.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20I want it to feel like a home,

0:10:20 > 0:10:22so that they feel really loved

0:10:22 > 0:10:24and really appreciated and that we want them to be there

0:10:24 > 0:10:27and we want them to feel good about being there,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29so the design has to be really special.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31And this design really is special.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33After demolishing the old small hut,

0:10:33 > 0:10:37we'll put up a brand-new building, emerging from the ground

0:10:37 > 0:10:39on a plot of land that's three times the size.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43At the front, a courtyard will lead into the reception.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45There's a large office and a long sunlit corridor

0:10:45 > 0:10:50will lead through to the large multi-space area for kids to enjoy.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55There will be a state of the art kitchen for lessons in cooking

0:10:55 > 0:10:58and a cosy counselling room, and it's not just the centre.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01We're also going to build four studio flats

0:11:01 > 0:11:03for those young people leaving care

0:11:03 > 0:11:06to start to learn to live independently.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Finally, a decking area will work as a fire escape from the flats

0:11:10 > 0:11:12all the way down to a patio at the back,

0:11:12 > 0:11:15which overlooks a rockery and beautiful garden,

0:11:15 > 0:11:19topped off by a soundproof music room for the teenagers.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22It's amazing but hugely ambitious, but if we pull it off,

0:11:22 > 0:11:25it will be something that Swansea can be really proud of.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29This is 350 square metres of awesomeness.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32It's really important that when the guys turn up and arrive here,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34they might be feeling nervous,

0:11:34 > 0:11:36there will be a lot of trepidation

0:11:36 > 0:11:37and I want it to feel really welcoming.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40There's not a detail that hasn't been thought about.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Well, at this stage, with so much work having been done,

0:11:42 > 0:11:44only you can mess it up now, can't you?

0:11:46 > 0:11:47That's my usual coaching tip at that stage.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50OK, so if I wasn't feeling quite anxious and nervous as it is,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52you're just going to turn the knife.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54I think motivational speeches are important at this stage.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57And as there's no building to plaster yet,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00we have roped Chris in to help Jules out in the garden.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Back in my life again.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Like being back at school!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07They were best buddies at school and now they have a chance to work

0:12:07 > 0:12:09together again after all this time. All this time.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Excited? How come your helmet's black?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14How come his helmet is black and how come yours and mine is blue?

0:12:14 > 0:12:17You're the apprentice.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Black is management, this is trade and that's a visiting apprentice.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23- Wait.- You're having me on. - Have a look, look.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25They are all apprentices.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27That's a real cheek, isn't it?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Luckily, we have someone here who is definitely not

0:12:29 > 0:12:31an apprentice taking charge,

0:12:31 > 0:12:34with veteran garden designer Laurence here to turn this marsh

0:12:34 > 0:12:35into a magical space.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38This is a challenge, isn't it?

0:12:38 > 0:12:40It is. Yeah. We've got water build-up issues.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43There's the steepness of the embankment,

0:12:43 > 0:12:45access for the young adults to get into the garden

0:12:45 > 0:12:48and then the actual ground conditions themselves,

0:12:48 > 0:12:51but, yeah, within 11 days, it'll all come true.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54And you've got Julian and Chris working with you.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56That's an experience in itself.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00Having worked with Julian before, but, yeah, Chris is a lovely guy.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04There is also word Billy has passed his tractor driving licence.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07He won't be allowed on this site.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Harsh but fair, but you can't blame him.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14It's all hands on deck, clearing access to the garden.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18I'm here to help.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20New territory to me, this.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Outside, clean air.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26But leaving Chris in charge of clearing the tree line

0:13:26 > 0:13:28might not have been such a good idea.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Timber!

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I thought they was just going to cut the fence line out.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Popped away for five minutes and they've cut all the trees down.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41It is rather concerning.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45I'll keep reins on him. I know he can get a bit carried away.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47He's quite excited, actually, because he's been let out.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49But I'll hold him back.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Right, Laurence. What's next? Done that.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Yeah, I didn't want the trees cut.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55I got that big one earlier.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Yes, the timber frame walls are flying up so quickly

0:14:01 > 0:14:03that Billy left the generator for five minutes

0:14:03 > 0:14:05and they went and built a room round it.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08I wonder who'd do a thing like that?

0:14:09 > 0:14:12The trades on site know who we are building for

0:14:12 > 0:14:14and why this building will be so important.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20You think a lot of these people in care, once they get to 18,

0:14:20 > 0:14:22they're just pushed out into the world.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24A lot of them have no life skills.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Things we take for granted, they don't know about.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28- Yeah.- They've been in care for most of their life

0:14:28 > 0:14:31and then there's nothing out there, so it's good to see that

0:14:31 > 0:14:35- they've got something when they leave.- Yeah, and you're building it.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37- Yeah, yeah.- That's kind of cool, isn't it?

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Yes. It is a worthy cause.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Emma has built her charity from scratch over five years,

0:14:47 > 0:14:51creating a family for the young people that need it most.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54She wants to help young people in care

0:14:54 > 0:14:56as it's something she can relate to herself

0:14:56 > 0:14:58after her own tough childhood.

0:15:00 > 0:15:05My mum had alcohol addiction, as did my stepfather.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08I think it's fair to say that I was neglected.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10I think it's fair to say that there wasn't a meal on the table.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Emma went into care at the age of nine

0:15:14 > 0:15:17and spent nearly nine years in foster care.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21After she left, like many, Emma felt unprepared to live on her own.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23But when she moved to a flat in Pembrokeshire,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Emma found a support network in the village where she lived,

0:15:26 > 0:15:28who helped her.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32I was really, really fortunate to have such...

0:15:32 > 0:15:33In such a small village,

0:15:33 > 0:15:35to have so many people looking out for me and I believe

0:15:35 > 0:15:38that they had genuine affection for me and my well-being.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Her experience of the care system and the support that she received

0:15:41 > 0:15:46afterwards inspired here to set up Roots, to help children like her.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51Emma has given me more love

0:15:51 > 0:15:53than I've ever felt in my life.

0:15:53 > 0:15:55But even though my mum loves me,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58Emma just gives me that extra love that I needed.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00She made me the person I am today, really.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05I've come to meet Emma, to find out more about her

0:16:05 > 0:16:07and why this project is so important.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09My greatest wish was to have never been in care.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11You know, I lived with my mum and that's where

0:16:11 > 0:16:14I would have wanted to be, ideally, of course it is.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16- Yeah.- But then, Roots wouldn't have happened, you know,

0:16:16 > 0:16:20it all happened because I'd been in care and because I could

0:16:20 > 0:16:23empathise and sympathise with people going through the same things

0:16:23 > 0:16:27and understand about the loss of identity and belonging

0:16:27 > 0:16:29and wanting to be part of a family.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31That's literally what Roots is about, you know.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34We love our clients. We genuinely do.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37We find great joy when they show us their baby scan photos

0:16:37 > 0:16:40or they're telling us that they're getting married

0:16:40 > 0:16:41and they give us an invitation.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43That will make me cry.

0:16:44 > 0:16:45- Why?- Because...

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Because they treat us as family.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50It's really important. Family is really important for everyone

0:16:50 > 0:16:53and like I said, and it doesn't have to be blood.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54It doesn't have to be blood.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57How much of a difference can it make to a young person's life

0:16:57 > 0:16:59around the age of 16, 17,

0:16:59 > 0:17:02if people take an interest and just put a bit of care and attention

0:17:02 > 0:17:03into them at that stage?

0:17:03 > 0:17:04It will make a huge difference.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07I think for these young people to know that people

0:17:07 > 0:17:09actually care about them, that they are worthy enough,

0:17:09 > 0:17:12to know that they're loved and they are needed within this world,

0:17:12 > 0:17:16to have that time and care taken upon them,

0:17:16 > 0:17:17for the interest for their futures.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20The people who are building this, that's what they're building it for.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23It's going to change people's lives,

0:17:23 > 0:17:26who probably feel a little bit like me, unworthy,

0:17:26 > 0:17:28unloved, and to show young people in care that your past

0:17:28 > 0:17:31doesn't have to determine your future.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36It's clear to me that Emma has created a different important kind

0:17:36 > 0:17:39of family that all the builders on site want to support

0:17:39 > 0:17:43and Sophie's come up with a plan to show that in the design.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47My idea is to take a little portrait of every single person

0:17:47 > 0:17:49who's on site today and I'm going to put them

0:17:49 > 0:17:52on this enormous tree mural, almost like building up

0:17:52 > 0:17:54the family tree of the Roots foundation

0:17:54 > 0:17:56and everybody who's helped, everyone who Emma has helped,

0:17:56 > 0:17:57can be added to this tree.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59It just means that the guys who are in the charity office

0:17:59 > 0:18:02will just always be reminded of the people you support

0:18:02 > 0:18:03and the people that they've helped.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09The atmosphere on site is incredible.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12Everyone has pulled out all the stops to achieve the impossible.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Just look at what can be achieved in just one day.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20I am stood in a brand-new building which is simply enormous.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23This is one side and that's the apartment side over there,

0:18:23 > 0:18:25which is looking pretty magnificent.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Bearing in mind, we started at 9.30 this morning,

0:18:28 > 0:18:31I mean, that's less than, like, ten hours.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33It's ridiculous that we can actually do so much

0:18:33 > 0:18:35so I think it couldn't have gone any better.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Let's go and get some dinner and make you happy.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Do you want to bring Chris or not?

0:18:40 > 0:18:41Leave him. He's happy sawing.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43- Is he? All right.- Yeah. That's all he's done all day.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45LAUGHTER

0:18:48 > 0:18:50Hang on. Is this one of yours?

0:18:51 > 0:18:53It's a cracker.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55That's cheered him up no end.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57There's nothing like somebody else's pain to cheer you up.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Good morning. It's day two of the Children In Need build

0:19:10 > 0:19:14and I thought I'd give you a bird's eye view of the site.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17As you fly over the top, you can see the size of this build.

0:19:17 > 0:19:18It's absolutely amazing.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21People down there look like ants working all over it.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23You can see the garden,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25the people working out there, clearing the boggy water.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27It's epic.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31But today, there's a massive race to get the roof boarded and sealed

0:19:31 > 0:19:33before a storm arrives.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36So no wonder Mark is looking stressed.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39- What's wrong with your face this morning?- I woke up, and it was stuck

0:19:39 > 0:19:41- to my head.- That must be a constant disappointment.- It is.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43That's why there's no mirrors in my house.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45- Myrrhs?- No mirrors in the house. - Myrrhs?- Mirrors, none.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48- As in gold, frankincense and myrrh? - No, no, no. Mirrors.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50- Mirrors that you look and shave in. - Is that what you think

0:19:50 > 0:19:54what they meant when the baby Jesus was brought by the Three Wise Men -

0:19:54 > 0:19:56- gold, frankincense and a mirror? - Yeah.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01As if we hadn't got enough water on site already,

0:20:01 > 0:20:04since clearing the tree line, the garden has turned into a swamp,

0:20:04 > 0:20:06for some reason.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08We looked on the old OS maps and found

0:20:08 > 0:20:11that there was a drainage ditch that ran all the way down there,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13which basically had just fallen into misuse.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15Nearly all of this water is emanating from a spring in the side

0:20:15 > 0:20:17of the hill and that's why it's come up today,

0:20:17 > 0:20:21despite the fact that yesterday, we didn't have any rain.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25This is a massive problem and if we've got any chance of finishing

0:20:25 > 0:20:28the garden at all, we're going to have to dig the ditch back out -

0:20:28 > 0:20:30hopefully, that will do the trick.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Helping out in the garden is 21-year-old Nick.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38He would really have benefitted from a centre like this,

0:20:38 > 0:20:42as he lost his first home when he left care, due to lack of support.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46I got put into my first flat and I lost it in six months.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48- Yeah?- I didn't really know how to pay my bills,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50give up with all electricity, gas, water.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52So you had to start again?

0:20:52 > 0:20:55- Yeah.- Right.- And now, after starting again, I've never been better now.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57I know what I'm doing now, thanks to my brother.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Yeah. So would you agree, if something like this was about

0:21:00 > 0:21:03- when you were going through the system...?- Well, from day one,

0:21:03 > 0:21:04I would have been a bit more secure in my flat.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06I wouldn't have lost my flat as quick as I did.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09And, you know, what they're building here is amazing.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11I wish I had it when I was getting ready for independence.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14That's what I could have done with. And they make new friends here

0:21:14 > 0:21:16as well, so when they go out in the real world, they'll have friends

0:21:16 > 0:21:18- as well to support each other as well.- Yeah.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22That's going to be great. I can't wait to see it finished.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24But looking at the state of the garden,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27the finish line is looking further than ever away.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31The forecast is it's not going to get any better,

0:21:31 > 0:21:33which is a bit of a worry, but you've managed before

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- in tough conditions, haven't you? - I've dealt with worse.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38So long as it doesn't snow.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41- Don't...- Cos we can't plant if it snows.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49After 14 years in care and 15 different places to live,

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Kyle tried to leave but because he just wasn't ready,

0:21:53 > 0:21:57things fell apart and he ended up homeless and sleeping in a tent.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Emma helped him find somewhere to live,

0:22:01 > 0:22:05but being in many homes during his young life has taken its toll.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08What is it like to go through that system

0:22:08 > 0:22:11and to not know where you're living and what you're doing?

0:22:11 > 0:22:13I think after the second or third placement,

0:22:13 > 0:22:17that's when it started to get difficult to make relationships

0:22:17 > 0:22:20and connect with people, because I just kind of had the impression

0:22:20 > 0:22:23that it's not going to be long and I'm leaving.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26So I didn't try as much and now it's become a difficulty

0:22:26 > 0:22:29when I really want to make a connection with someone.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31But you have made a connection with Emma?

0:22:31 > 0:22:34Yeah. Emma's kind of like gained my trust in a way,

0:22:34 > 0:22:39because she's proven to me that she's there and always has been for

0:22:39 > 0:22:43the past six, seven years and she's never let me down, so...

0:22:43 > 0:22:45She's a pretty amazing person.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47- Yeah.- What is it that makes her so special, do you think?

0:22:47 > 0:22:50She never gives up. Never.

0:22:50 > 0:22:55When I was taking my GCSEs and I was staying in my friend's tent, she

0:22:55 > 0:22:58rang me up straightaway and she was like, "There's a new house opening."

0:22:58 > 0:23:01- And within that week, I was living there.- Is it good to have someone

0:23:01 > 0:23:04on your side that's fighting that hard for you?

0:23:04 > 0:23:06Yeah. And she understands as well,

0:23:06 > 0:23:08cos Emma's been through similar herself.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11Do you think the training side of what we're building in there,

0:23:11 > 0:23:14so that people can learn those life skills is going to be important?

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Absolutely, yeah. When I first went into the house

0:23:16 > 0:23:18that I'm living in now, I wouldn't know where to start.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22How to open up a bank account or, well, what kind of dial I need

0:23:22 > 0:23:25to put the washing machine on and I know quite a lot of them things now.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27- Do you cook?- Not the best but...

0:23:27 > 0:23:29Would you like to learn some more cooking skills?

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- I'd love to.- So all of these things are things that we could...

0:23:32 > 0:23:34we can build into the centre here.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37I think it's important, because I know that I'm going to be able to do

0:23:37 > 0:23:39other things independently

0:23:39 > 0:23:42that I probably wouldn't have been able to do.

0:23:42 > 0:23:47What is it that people get wrong about young people in care?

0:23:47 > 0:23:51People do have different opinions on people in care, kind of assume

0:23:51 > 0:23:54that it's their fault and think the worst of them.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58What do you make of the fact that there are 350 builders up there

0:23:58 > 0:24:01giving their time to build this facility

0:24:01 > 0:24:04- for people coming out of the care system?- It just kind of proves

0:24:04 > 0:24:07that people are out there and want to help.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11It doesn't seem like you're like invisible any more.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13That's cool, isn't it? Yeah, it's pretty cool.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22When you meet a young man like Kyle, you realise that all he wants

0:24:22 > 0:24:24is a bit of a helping hand to get started in life

0:24:24 > 0:24:28and there are tens of thousands of children in care across the country

0:24:28 > 0:24:31who all have to come out and find their way in the world.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33Children In Need support them

0:24:33 > 0:24:36and you can help Children In Need with their work.

0:24:46 > 0:24:47I know times are tough,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49but if you can, you'll be helping

0:24:49 > 0:24:50a lot of people who really need it.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13# Don't let the rain come down

0:25:13 > 0:25:14# Ah, ah!

0:25:14 > 0:25:16# Oh, no, don't let the rain come down

0:25:16 > 0:25:18# Ah, ah... #

0:25:18 > 0:25:20No! Make it stop! THUNDER RUMBLES

0:25:20 > 0:25:25# My roof's got a hole in it and I might drown... #

0:25:25 > 0:25:27We didn't get the roof finished last night

0:25:27 > 0:25:31and the building is absolutely soaked.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35It's flooded right through every floor.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38It's not just the water on the floor that's the problem.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41The insulation is soaking and will have to be replaced.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Look at the state of the place.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48The walls are soaked through and any of the work on the inside

0:25:48 > 0:25:50of the building has had to stop.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Let's hope they get the roof on before the next downpour.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55This has just set us back so much.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57It's just been like...

0:25:57 > 0:25:58It's completely tripped us up.

0:25:58 > 0:25:59Completely tripped us up.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04At the front, Jules has found a ray of sunshine.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08That young lady just offered me a haircut but...

0:26:12 > 0:26:13Send Nick Knowles over.

0:26:13 > 0:26:14We'll cut his hair.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16No, you don't want to cut his hair.

0:26:16 > 0:26:17It's all greasy and horrible.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19He could do with a cut!

0:26:19 > 0:26:23I'm here, listening in the room!

0:26:23 > 0:26:24But this is serious.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27We've had to draft in some extra help.

0:26:27 > 0:26:28- We're flooded.- Oh, no!

0:26:28 > 0:26:32- Oh, no! We're flooded. - Where's Billy?

0:26:32 > 0:26:34- Oh, never mind him. - He's my favourite.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36We haven't got the roof quite finished yet,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38so we just need to get out what's in there now.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40- Yeah, we'll have a look at it. - Oh, my God! Thank you so much.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44Above and beyond, that goes for everyone on site -

0:26:44 > 0:26:48from the guys laying the roof to the team serving the tea to the group

0:26:48 > 0:26:53tirelessly lifting and shifting all the materials into the garden,

0:26:53 > 0:26:56where the centrepiece of the design is flying up,

0:26:56 > 0:26:59a soundproofed music room for the teenagers.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01This is the third one you've done for us.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03The last one we did for you was a couple of years ago,

0:27:03 > 0:27:06so I've made a couple of quid since then, give a bit back.

0:27:06 > 0:27:07Is that right? Is that how it works?

0:27:07 > 0:27:10The building has been saved.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12The fire brigade pumped out all the water...

0:27:12 > 0:27:13Thank you, thank you.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15..and we're ready to go again.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Thank you very much indeed. Isn't it amazing? You get up out of bed

0:27:19 > 0:27:21in the morning and all you do is just save the world?

0:27:21 > 0:27:22SIREN WAILS

0:27:24 > 0:27:27He means the firemen. And that's what every single person on

0:27:27 > 0:27:31this building is doing too. Up on the roof, we are now sealing it up,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33so that the rain can rain all it likes.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Well, you know, within reason.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39- Flippin' heck, it's lovely! - It's come out really good.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43- Would you do it again?- Yeah, why not? With you, I'll do anything.- Aw!

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- Within reason.- Within reason!

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Yeah, important qualification, that!

0:27:49 > 0:27:52Everyone working together, new friends and old, like Jules,

0:27:52 > 0:27:56who's been so happy, having the time of his life with his old mate Chris

0:27:56 > 0:27:57down in the garden.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59Almost brings a tear to my eye.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02- I've got some heart-wrenching news for you.- What's that?

0:28:02 > 0:28:06I actually need you to go back inside and start the plastering.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10Only have to tell me once, I'm gone!

0:28:10 > 0:28:12And, erm, not, like, immediately,

0:28:12 > 0:28:15but, like, say goodbye to all your mates and stuff.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18Nothing quite like the feeling of being dropped by your mates

0:28:18 > 0:28:20when they get a better offer, but, you know,

0:28:20 > 0:28:22he's only got eyes for plastering, really.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24And with over 500 sheets of plasterboard

0:28:24 > 0:28:28coming in the building today, he's going to need to focus.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Have you ever worked with this many plasterers in one place before?

0:28:31 > 0:28:33No, not all getting on as well!

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Oh, is it? So, why did you all decide to come and join in?

0:28:36 > 0:28:39I was in foster care myself for a bit when I was a kid.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41- Were you?- For about a year.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43Centre like this will make a big difference.

0:28:44 > 0:28:48That's why hundreds of volunteers are giving everything they can

0:28:48 > 0:28:49to make this project happen

0:28:49 > 0:28:53and it makes it all worthwhile when you remember just who it's for.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56Children, look what we've found!

0:28:56 > 0:28:57EXCITED CHATTER

0:28:59 > 0:29:03Emma and the team at Roots are teaching the younger kids to cook,

0:29:03 > 0:29:04to give them a head start

0:29:04 > 0:29:07in learning the skills they'll need when they leave care.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Because they don't have their own kitchen,

0:29:10 > 0:29:12they've had to come to a local restaurant to do it.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- What have you been making? - A Pudsey pizza.

0:29:15 > 0:29:16Pudsey pizza.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18Have a look at the pizza!

0:29:18 > 0:29:19It's amazing!

0:29:19 > 0:29:21It's important to teach them the skills,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24because sometimes they don't have a positive support network.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27We're lucky here today, that we have carers here who do that.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30But a lot of our older young people don't have that positive role model

0:29:30 > 0:29:33in their life to show them how to cook, to show them how to budget,

0:29:33 > 0:29:36to have positive relationships, and how to integrate

0:29:36 > 0:29:38- in the community positively. I'm a mum.- Yeah.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41- I'm not sure that my son is capable, probably at...- 18.- ..18,

0:29:41 > 0:29:44straightaway, to move out and to be able to do all those things...

0:29:44 > 0:29:46- Not at all.- ..without much of a support network.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48So, they're going into the big wide world with nothing.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50- Blind, really, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:29:50 > 0:29:54On what sort of scale are we looking at children that need care?

0:29:54 > 0:29:57There is approximately 70,000 young people in care at the moment.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00- 70,000.- 70,000 young people in care at the moment.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04And they're being supported really well in a lot of circumstances,

0:30:04 > 0:30:07but we need to help them and look after them.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09- Yeah.- And make sure that they're OK and that they get the support

0:30:09 > 0:30:11that they long for, and do it for as long as needs be.

0:30:15 > 0:30:20As a father, I don't know how it's got to this scale.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21No, I feel very...

0:30:21 > 0:30:23I mean, look at these little mites here, look -

0:30:23 > 0:30:26smiling, bouncy, happy.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30They're so... They're just trusting that whoever's looking after them

0:30:30 > 0:30:32is going to do the best by them.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35And luckily, there's places like Roots around that do.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Children In Need support thousands of projects like this

0:30:43 > 0:30:44all over Great Britain.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07That's what Children In Need's all about.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16Morning, morning, morning!

0:31:16 > 0:31:19We're halfway, and the supplies are flying in from all over the country.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22What part of Cornwall are you from, then?

0:31:22 > 0:31:25I'm from Perth, Scotland.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29Four-and-a-half kilometres of Siberian larch cladding has arrived

0:31:29 > 0:31:31for the outside of the building,

0:31:31 > 0:31:34and with so much going on at the same time,

0:31:34 > 0:31:36it's a mission just to keep everything moving.

0:31:36 > 0:31:37- He's a bit of a...- What's he doing?

0:31:37 > 0:31:41- Oi, oi! What are you doing? - I'm only reversing it out the way!

0:31:41 > 0:31:44Watch out, look... Watch out at the back here.

0:31:44 > 0:31:45Oi, stop! Stop!

0:31:45 > 0:31:47You pilchard! Stop!

0:31:49 > 0:31:51- Oops!- Don't touch anything!

0:31:51 > 0:31:53It's all right, we'll build another one.

0:31:53 > 0:31:54Oh, as if we haven't got enough to do!

0:31:54 > 0:31:56Did you...? Did you let him do this?

0:31:56 > 0:31:58No! I didn't even know he was on it!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Bill, you've destroyed the neighbour's shed.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03- What are we going to do? - Well, you're going to go and tell

0:32:03 > 0:32:05the neighbour that you've just knocked their shed over.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11If you do it gently, that might just marry up again...

0:32:11 > 0:32:14..or maybe it won't.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16It's not, has it?

0:32:16 > 0:32:18I... Oh, it's lunch!

0:32:21 > 0:32:22I don't know what to say.

0:32:25 > 0:32:27Right, might as well just finish the job.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31Inside, over 500 plasterboards have gone up,

0:32:31 > 0:32:34and the army of plasterers have nearly finished the walls,

0:32:34 > 0:32:37using up 100 bags of plaster in just two days.

0:32:39 > 0:32:40I know, it's amazing, right?

0:32:41 > 0:32:45Sophie wants her photo mural to represent all of the Roots family,

0:32:45 > 0:32:48so today, to surprise Emma, she's invited not just the builders,

0:32:48 > 0:32:51but the volunteers, staff members and kids from Roots,

0:32:51 > 0:32:52to get their picture taken.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Girls, have you thought about what you're going to draw for Emma?

0:32:57 > 0:32:59- I know.- You know?- Yeah, Sophie.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Oh, brilliant.

0:33:01 > 0:33:04Josh and Alex are two members of the team that work with Emma

0:33:04 > 0:33:05to look after all these youngsters.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09So, can you tell me a bit more about the kids that Roots help,

0:33:09 > 0:33:11and some of the challenges that they faced?

0:33:11 > 0:33:13The stories are all vastly different.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17There might be stories of abuse, and that includes neglect, obviously,

0:33:17 > 0:33:19bereavement, parents who've got substance misuse issues.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22The stories are always quite heart-wrenching, aren't they?

0:33:22 > 0:33:26But, erm, they always speak to us of the child's resilience.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29I think what Emma's identified is some of the gaps that young people

0:33:29 > 0:33:32fall through in provisions, for various different reasons,

0:33:32 > 0:33:34and if we're there to pick up, and, you know,

0:33:34 > 0:33:36help people through these little gaps and stuff like that,

0:33:36 > 0:33:38I don't think we can go far wrong.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40This is a pioneering project, right?

0:33:40 > 0:33:42We've achieved so much in such a short space of time

0:33:42 > 0:33:44with the building that we did have.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46Now we've got this complete new building,

0:33:46 > 0:33:48there's so many more ideas that we've already had

0:33:48 > 0:33:51that just can be pushed through and developed further.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53It will somehow reinforce the message

0:33:53 > 0:33:55that we're constantly giving young people,

0:33:55 > 0:33:58that the community's come together to make a special space for them,

0:33:58 > 0:34:00you know, that they really do deserve all of this,

0:34:00 > 0:34:02and they deserve opportunities

0:34:02 > 0:34:04and they deserve to feel loved, safe, all of that.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09It's amazing to think that this building is going to be so much more

0:34:09 > 0:34:12than just a centre. It's going to give these kids a place to belong.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15And all thanks to these great guys.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22We've got just three days left, and we're still going strong.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26Inside, the plaster's dried just in time for the cavalry to arrive.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29The painters, decorators, chippies and kitchen fitters

0:34:29 > 0:34:31are all rolling in to make this place look amazing.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36- Morning.- You've, erm...

0:34:36 > 0:34:38..just got a little bit of paint on your cheek.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40That's it!

0:34:41 > 0:34:42In apartments one, two, three and four,

0:34:42 > 0:34:45they're doing all the shower rooms, and the kitchens.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47We've got to have it ready for tomorrow morning,

0:34:47 > 0:34:49cos the flooring's going in here tomorrow.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Don't do that!

0:34:56 > 0:35:02Oooh! Oh, I love the colour!

0:35:02 > 0:35:05I'm surprised they didn't do one of them in pink!

0:35:05 > 0:35:07- It would have been nice.- How did that slip through the net?

0:35:07 > 0:35:09Don't encourage her, really!

0:35:09 > 0:35:11With the colours flying up on the walls,

0:35:11 > 0:35:13we're starting to see what it's going to look like,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15and how the studio flats are going to work.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19These apartments are amazing, aren't they?

0:35:19 > 0:35:21- Sorry, guys.- Yes, exactly.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23This is a self-contained apartment.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26So, you've got everything in here - bathroom, kitchen, bedroom,

0:35:26 > 0:35:28living space, all in this little compact studio.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Which is good, cos they can have their own independence,

0:35:30 > 0:35:32but they've got all the support they need.

0:35:32 > 0:35:34Yeah, absolutely, and they don't need masses of space.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36I think it's about getting the essentials.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39They're going to have their own boiler and bills to pay,

0:35:39 > 0:35:42so it's introducing them to taking on those sorts of responsibilities.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44And then from a design point of view,

0:35:44 > 0:35:47I have made each of the apartments look quite different.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49What I didn't want to do was create a kind of hotel feel,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52where you're sort of checking in, and it's a bit of a generic room.

0:35:52 > 0:35:56So, I have gone to quite a lot of effort to personalise the space

0:35:56 > 0:35:59without making it personal to a specific individual.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02- People are going to pass through here.- Yeah.- It's going to be great.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05It's going to feel like... I wanted it to feel a little bit like home

0:36:05 > 0:36:06- when you walked in here.- Yeah.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08Sometimes when you think of the little ones

0:36:08 > 0:36:10and looking after the little ones,

0:36:10 > 0:36:12but what I love about this is, we're looking after the biggies, too.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16These flats are going to give Emma the chance to support vulnerable

0:36:16 > 0:36:21young people leaving care, the way her village looked after her.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24When she left care, alone in her first flat,

0:36:24 > 0:36:26one of the people who helped her was John,

0:36:26 > 0:36:28who with his wife Jill were like family to Emma.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31So, did you kind of mentor her a bit when she was younger, then?

0:36:31 > 0:36:33Yeah. We've known her for a long, long time.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35She's a lovely person. Amazing woman.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38I think because she's been on the other side of the fence,

0:36:38 > 0:36:39- as it may well be...- Yeah.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42That now she's in a position where she's passionate

0:36:42 > 0:36:46- about trying to help youngsters. - Yeah.- And she does a fantastic job.

0:36:46 > 0:36:49That isn't a local accent, though, is it?

0:36:49 > 0:36:50I was born in Hertfordshire.

0:36:50 > 0:36:54In fact, coincidence, you've got one of the people working on your team,

0:36:54 > 0:36:56- Billy...- Yes? - ..who I was in school with.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58- In Welwyn?- Yeah. In Welwyn Garden City, yeah.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00- You were not?!- I'm amazed, yeah.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02- In school?- Yeah, junior school.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Bill!

0:37:05 > 0:37:07- Billy!- What's up? What's gone wrong?

0:37:07 > 0:37:10Come and say hello. Take a very long look at this man.

0:37:10 > 0:37:11I've got a picture of you here.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13- You've got a picture.- Oh, my gosh.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15Were you actually in class with him?

0:37:15 > 0:37:16Same football team.

0:37:16 > 0:37:17- Oh, look!- Yourself...

0:37:17 > 0:37:19Billy Burn! Johnnie Gilroy!

0:37:19 > 0:37:21- Dave Elliot.- Myself - John Gwilt.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28- You went to grammar school, John! - I know I did, yeah!

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Oh, my God! God, city boy!

0:37:31 > 0:37:33- Yeah.- John...

0:37:33 > 0:37:34God! Oh, this is...

0:37:34 > 0:37:36This is something special, this is.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39Oh, little Billy with his little face on that picture.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42It's amazing how you get ugly as you get old, isn't it, really?

0:37:47 > 0:37:49I know it's not about the looks, don't worry.

0:37:49 > 0:37:50We're not superficial.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53So, we're going to raise money for Children In Need

0:37:53 > 0:37:55in the most ridiculous way possible. And don't try this at home!

0:37:56 > 0:37:59We need you to make bets, please, maybe put a pound in the bucket -

0:37:59 > 0:38:02who will get their stocking off first?

0:38:02 > 0:38:05But only by pulling from the top. Are you all up for that?

0:38:05 > 0:38:06- ALL:- Yes!

0:38:06 > 0:38:08Lovely.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

0:38:12 > 0:38:13Are we ready?

0:38:13 > 0:38:16- Ready to go.- Three, two, one...

0:38:16 > 0:38:17..go!

0:38:22 > 0:38:24SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

0:38:36 > 0:38:37I told you it hurt!

0:38:37 > 0:38:40I thought my lip was going to go over the top of my head!

0:38:42 > 0:38:43So, who was first off?

0:38:43 > 0:38:45- Billy.- Billy.- Me! - Billy was first off?!

0:38:45 > 0:38:47So, that was all for Children In Need.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49Give yourselves a round of applause!

0:38:52 > 0:38:54I really wouldn't recommend doing that at home.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58But you can do any number of things to raise money for Children In Need,

0:38:58 > 0:39:00including picking up the phone right now.

0:39:00 > 0:39:04Children In Need support many projects around the country.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26- Thank you very much!- Thank you!

0:39:31 > 0:39:33It's the last day of the build,

0:39:33 > 0:39:35and even though we're basically a day behind,

0:39:35 > 0:39:40everyone on site is projecting that cool and collected attitude

0:39:40 > 0:39:41needed to get it done.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44I'm floating along calmly on the top of the water...

0:39:45 > 0:39:47..looking beautiful with my plumage,

0:39:47 > 0:39:49feeling serene and gorgeous,

0:39:49 > 0:39:51then underground, I'm like an Irish dancer.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58He's bonkers, isn't he? We really don't have any time for any more

0:39:58 > 0:40:02hold-ups, which is ironic, because with just hours to go,

0:40:02 > 0:40:07the wallpaper for Sophie's family tree won't stay on the wall.

0:40:07 > 0:40:08It's just peeling off.

0:40:08 > 0:40:10It's just not sticking to the wall.

0:40:10 > 0:40:11And if this does...

0:40:11 > 0:40:13If this primer doesn't stick to the wall,

0:40:13 > 0:40:15then we can't get the wallpaper to stick to the plaster.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18This is the wall that's going to have all the photos that we took

0:40:18 > 0:40:22of the builders, the kids, of the guys from Roots foundation.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24This is like the whole hero of my design.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27And at this hour, it's looking like it's not going to work.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30If you don't mind me saying so, you seem to have got very personally...

0:40:30 > 0:40:32I mean, we all get very personally involved with these things,

0:40:32 > 0:40:34but this one seems to have touched you particularly?

0:40:36 > 0:40:38Yeah, this one has, um...

0:40:38 > 0:40:40..this one has touched me quite a bit, yeah.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43Me and my husband are in the adoption process right now.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47Now, when you adopt, quite typically it's for children nought to three.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51Because actually, there's more chance of the adoption

0:40:51 > 0:40:54- being successful when they're really young.- Yeah.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57And this has just shone a real light for me, because it's

0:40:57 > 0:40:59all the children who didn't get that break nought to three

0:40:59 > 0:41:01and have been in long-term care or fostering.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04You know, I'm trying to do a little bit to help in my little way,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07but someone like Emma is scooping up with her enormous arms

0:41:07 > 0:41:12all these other kids, who haven't had... Didn't get a great break,

0:41:12 > 0:41:14didn't get a good hand of cards in life.

0:41:15 > 0:41:16So, I've seen... Yeah.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20It's been a bit emotional.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28The flats we're building are going to provide a stepping stone

0:41:28 > 0:41:32for care leavers who aren't ready to strike out completely on their own,

0:41:32 > 0:41:34like 17-year-old Angel, who spent her childhood

0:41:34 > 0:41:37in foster care before moving to her current home

0:41:37 > 0:41:40when she was 12. Angel is happy and settled,

0:41:40 > 0:41:44but as this is a children's home, she'll have to leave when she's 18,

0:41:44 > 0:41:47and moving to Roots could be perfect for her.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50I've lived here for five years.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52It's the longest placement that I've been in.

0:41:53 > 0:41:54When I first came here,

0:41:54 > 0:41:57I was like running round loads and I was really happy.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00Before that, I didn't really feel much love.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Now, not knowing exactly where she'll be living next

0:42:03 > 0:42:05has been stressful.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08I felt very anxious about leaving,

0:42:08 > 0:42:10cos, like, I didn't know where I was going to go.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14But obviously I know it's something that's got to happen.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17I think the day I leave, I'll feel really sad,

0:42:17 > 0:42:21cos of all the, like, relationships I've built up.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23Angel's house manager, Anthony,

0:42:23 > 0:42:27has been a father figure and mentor to her for the past five years.

0:42:27 > 0:42:32How critical is that change at 18 for those young people

0:42:32 > 0:42:34- in terms of the rest of their life? - Really critical,

0:42:34 > 0:42:37because there isn't enough out there for these young people.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41It makes me feel at ease knowing that Angel could possibly

0:42:41 > 0:42:44have something, and that will bring her anxiety straight down.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46We need more of these places.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49So, for you to come in and do this is absolutely amazing.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55Do you think people understand how hard it can be?

0:42:55 > 0:42:56Some people do I think, yeah.

0:42:56 > 0:42:58What is the toughest thing about being in here?

0:42:58 > 0:43:01Well, for me, the toughest thing about being in care is, like,

0:43:01 > 0:43:04not being with my family all the time.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06And obviously, building relationships,

0:43:06 > 0:43:08and then those carers leaving,

0:43:08 > 0:43:10so then you've got to have new carers.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13And obviously me leaving is going to be a hard thing as well.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17We're building this place, which you know about, but of course,

0:43:17 > 0:43:20it's another move, isn't it? And it's a move away from here...

0:43:20 > 0:43:22- Yeah.- ..which has been your home for five years.

0:43:22 > 0:43:24I felt very anxious about leaving.

0:43:24 > 0:43:27- Really?- I was chatting to Anthony the other day,

0:43:27 > 0:43:30and we were saying that knowing where I'm going to be going

0:43:30 > 0:43:32is not so much of a worry and things.

0:43:32 > 0:43:35They just support you with like showing you how to budget

0:43:35 > 0:43:37- and things like that.- So, it takes away some of the worry?

0:43:37 > 0:43:39- Yeah.- But it's still going to be

0:43:39 > 0:43:42- quite a big, emotional wrench to move?- Yeah.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47We have to get this place done right,

0:43:47 > 0:43:50so that youngsters like Angel can feel safe and supported

0:43:50 > 0:43:52whilst they find their feet.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56I think the garden's going to go pretty much right up to the wire.

0:43:56 > 0:43:59I think we're going to struggle with the garden to get it done.

0:43:59 > 0:44:01As you can see, it's bedlam down here.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04We've got major problems with getting materials down here

0:44:04 > 0:44:06because of all the mud. We've got 60 tonne of topsoil to come in,

0:44:06 > 0:44:09and they're bringing that down with wheelbarrows.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11We're bringing the hard-core down with the dumpers.

0:44:11 > 0:44:13But I've got a good gang of people.

0:44:13 > 0:44:17If the weather stays as it is, we'll be fine.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24With a backlog of jobs piling up, at least someone has some good news.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28I am so happy. Basically, we came up with a solution,

0:44:28 > 0:44:32we've sealed the plaster with He-Man strength wallpaper paste,

0:44:32 > 0:44:34and it appears to be working. I'm thrilled.

0:44:35 > 0:44:39Mark needs everyone to stay until the bitter end to get this done.

0:44:39 > 0:44:41Have you got any other skills apart from plumbing?

0:44:41 > 0:44:43Sweeping up, barrowing.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45- OK.- We're here till the end.

0:44:45 > 0:44:46- OK.- And a cwtch.

0:44:46 > 0:44:47And a cwtch.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51- You can't beat a good cwtch in Wales.- Good man.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54For everyone else, a cwtch is a cuddle.

0:44:54 > 0:44:56And it looks delirium has finally set in!

0:45:01 > 0:45:03Well, we've got to the end of what would be a normal working day, and

0:45:03 > 0:45:06basically it's going to be a late one going right through the night.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08We've got to pray we get finished,

0:45:08 > 0:45:10cos we've got to give this back first thing in the morning.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15Right from the start, this build has been absolutely epic.

0:45:18 > 0:45:21But if anyone can get it done, this lot can.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29When we first met Emma and the team at the Roots foundation,

0:45:29 > 0:45:32they were doing their best to support young people in care,

0:45:32 > 0:45:34to arm them with life skills.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38But the old hut wasn't up to the job so there was only one thing for it.

0:45:38 > 0:45:40Two, one!

0:45:41 > 0:45:47So in just 11 days, over 800 volunteers attempted the impossible,

0:45:47 > 0:45:50by undertaking the biggest single build we've ever done.

0:45:53 > 0:45:54And we've only gone and done it!

0:45:57 > 0:46:01An epic feat of engineering and design that will give the potential

0:46:01 > 0:46:04to help thousands of children over the coming years.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10At the front of the building, you're welcomed in

0:46:10 > 0:46:14by a bright and secure gateway that leads into a courtyard.

0:46:16 > 0:46:20A bright and colourful corridor leads through to the main space.

0:46:20 > 0:46:22There's a large office for the team,

0:46:22 > 0:46:25adorned with Sophie's mural on the magnetic wall

0:46:25 > 0:46:28that makes up all the Roots family, new and old.

0:46:31 > 0:46:34There's a free food store that will be generously supplied

0:46:34 > 0:46:38by a local supermarket for the next year for anyone who needs it.

0:46:40 > 0:46:44In the main room, we've created a homely, multiuse space for games,

0:46:44 > 0:46:46workshops, or movie nights.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52And the modern kitchen has all the facilities you'd have at home,

0:46:52 > 0:46:55so that the kids can learn how to use the washing machine,

0:46:55 > 0:46:57and prepare and cook meals.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02And there's even a secluded counselling room

0:47:02 > 0:47:03for one-to-one support.

0:47:06 > 0:47:09The apartment block has its own separate entrance,

0:47:09 > 0:47:14leading into four beautiful studio flats,

0:47:14 > 0:47:18all with their own electric and gas meters, so that the young people

0:47:18 > 0:47:21living here can learn how to manage their own bills.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26There's a walkway leading around the outside of the building,

0:47:26 > 0:47:28to a stunning non-boggy garden

0:47:28 > 0:47:31that gives the youngsters a safe place to play outside

0:47:31 > 0:47:33and soundproofed music room

0:47:33 > 0:47:37for teenagers like Kyle and Angel to hang out in.

0:47:42 > 0:47:46Finally, the building is ready to hand over to Emma.

0:47:49 > 0:47:53- It's amazing.- Your new home, to do what you need to do.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56Oh, my gosh. It's more than I ever thought it would be.

0:47:56 > 0:47:58- Ready to come and look inside?- Yes, please.- OK.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06My gosh!

0:48:06 > 0:48:08It feels crazy. It doesn't feel like the same space.

0:48:08 > 0:48:10- It's really weird.- Well, it isn't.

0:48:10 > 0:48:13It's an entirely new building that wasn't here 11 days ago.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16And it's light and it's colourful and it's friendly,

0:48:16 > 0:48:18which is really important.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20- You started that.- Yeah, I know.

0:48:20 > 0:48:21I can't get over it.

0:48:22 > 0:48:25Do you love the light that is pouring down from the skylights?

0:48:25 > 0:48:27- It's beautiful.- This whole corridor,

0:48:27 > 0:48:29rather than just being an entrance hall and corridor,

0:48:29 > 0:48:31has to be like an extra area to hang out and chat.

0:48:31 > 0:48:35- It's really important.- Well, it's bright and colourful and joyful

0:48:35 > 0:48:39- and that's kind of what we wanted to have just as you walked in.- It is.

0:48:40 > 0:48:41It is. I just can't get over it.

0:48:44 > 0:48:45- Ready to see the next bit?- Yes.

0:48:45 > 0:48:46This way.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55Oh, my gosh!

0:48:55 > 0:48:57They're going to absolutely love it.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00- The kids are going to love it.- It's beautiful, isn't it?- It is, yeah.

0:49:00 > 0:49:01It's more than you can ever wish for.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05Table tennis table that turns into a snooker table.

0:49:05 > 0:49:07There is a pull-down screen, projector,

0:49:07 > 0:49:09everybody can watch a movie in here in the evening.

0:49:09 > 0:49:11Gosh. The guys will love that.

0:49:13 > 0:49:14Thank you.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21It is so amazing. I can't wait for them to come in.

0:49:21 > 0:49:24Can you see on the other side of the room over there?

0:49:24 > 0:49:27- It's a beautiful kitchen.- Shall we go and have a look?- Yes, please.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33- It's amazing.- It's beautiful.

0:49:33 > 0:49:38It doesn't look like an industrial kitchen or a kitchen for a centre.

0:49:38 > 0:49:39No, it doesn't, does it?

0:49:39 > 0:49:41It's so homely.

0:49:41 > 0:49:42- Important for you, this?- Yeah.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45We didn't really have a kitchen before and we made do.

0:49:45 > 0:49:47We'd have a toaster and we'd have to heat things up in a microwave and

0:49:47 > 0:49:49it's not always great

0:49:49 > 0:49:52and we would make do but we don't have to make do any more.

0:49:53 > 0:49:54It's great.

0:49:57 > 0:49:58SHE GIGGLES

0:50:02 > 0:50:04Oh, my God!

0:50:07 > 0:50:08When did you do all this?

0:50:09 > 0:50:10We've been busy.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14Family tree, because of course, family is the key and as we found

0:50:14 > 0:50:17out, a family isn't necessarily just who you're related to.

0:50:17 > 0:50:19No. Oh, my gosh.

0:50:19 > 0:50:22- That's amazing.- So you recognise all these people?

0:50:22 > 0:50:25- I do.- And then on the other side of the family is your new family,

0:50:25 > 0:50:27some of the people that have actually taken part in building the

0:50:27 > 0:50:30whole thing. All little messages. Do you want to have a look?

0:50:39 > 0:50:43All I can say, look how much your family's grown.

0:50:43 > 0:50:45My gosh, and there's so much room for others, isn't there?

0:50:45 > 0:50:47EXCITED CHATTER

0:51:01 > 0:51:02Communal area.

0:51:04 > 0:51:07- Pretty, isn't it?- It's amazing. - It's incredible.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11- Speechless.- Why is it so emotional?

0:51:11 > 0:51:12People have shown that they care.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15It's quite warming for everyone here.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17Quite dizzy just thinking about it.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22- Oh, my God! It's beautiful. - It's completely different.

0:51:22 > 0:51:27I just expected another building but this is huge and it's lovely.

0:51:27 > 0:51:28This is our office.

0:51:29 > 0:51:30Do you like it?

0:51:32 > 0:51:35Everyone seems to be really happy already.

0:51:35 > 0:51:37I don't think anyone's going home.

0:51:37 > 0:51:39I don't think I'll be going home myself, to be honest.

0:51:39 > 0:51:41A lot of people going to get help there, do you think?

0:51:41 > 0:51:43Yes. Definitely.

0:51:43 > 0:51:45I think people will benefit from this.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47You won't be feeling invisible here.

0:51:47 > 0:51:49- Definitely not.- Excited about it?

0:51:49 > 0:51:50Can't wait. Can't wait!

0:51:54 > 0:51:56What's your overriding emotions at the moment?

0:51:56 > 0:51:58- Overwhelmed.- Blown away. It's amazing.

0:51:58 > 0:52:00Emotional and overwhelmed.

0:52:00 > 0:52:03And just incredible, all those people doing all this work.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06- Yeah.- It's really emotional.

0:52:09 > 0:52:11Do you want a moment, or are you all right?

0:52:11 > 0:52:13You always make me cry. Stop making me cry.

0:52:13 > 0:52:16- I'm not saying anything. - I know but it's weird,

0:52:16 > 0:52:19just thinking that this has been achieved, you know?

0:52:21 > 0:52:24This is two buildings and you've seen about two thirds of it.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25We have four apartments.

0:52:30 > 0:52:31Oh, my gosh!

0:52:33 > 0:52:35I can't get over it.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37Gosh, I would want to live somewhere like here.

0:52:37 > 0:52:41And that's important, because I didn't have anything like this

0:52:41 > 0:52:44when I left care but to have this, what a start to give people.

0:52:44 > 0:52:46- A lot of love gone into this.- Mmm.

0:52:47 > 0:52:51So each of these apartments has their own boiler,

0:52:51 > 0:52:52which is independently metered

0:52:52 > 0:52:55so that they learn to keep an eye on their bills.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57And again, that independence.

0:52:57 > 0:52:58It's amazing.

0:52:59 > 0:53:01It goes above and beyond my expectations.

0:53:04 > 0:53:06This is the one that's going to be for Angel.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13They're so elegant. It's like a little boutique hotel, isn't it?

0:53:13 > 0:53:14It's really exciting for us,

0:53:14 > 0:53:17because we are really committed to looking after her.

0:53:17 > 0:53:20I think because she's having to come from a residential home,

0:53:20 > 0:53:23for Angel to have that support next door, she will love it.

0:53:29 > 0:53:30Oh, my God!

0:53:31 > 0:53:34My God, it's beautiful. It's stunning.

0:53:35 > 0:53:36It's awesome.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39Have a look, babe. I think it's a lot to take in, isn't it?

0:53:43 > 0:53:46I weren't expecting it to look this amazing, like.

0:53:46 > 0:53:49- Do you like the colours? - Yeah, love them.

0:53:49 > 0:53:52When I spoke to you before, you said you were very nervous about

0:53:52 > 0:53:56moving on from where you are, cos it's been your home for five years.

0:53:56 > 0:54:00Now that you've seen this, do you think this will help?

0:54:01 > 0:54:04- Yeah.- Do you still feel nervous about it?

0:54:04 > 0:54:05A little bit but not as much now.

0:54:05 > 0:54:07A bit emotional?

0:54:09 > 0:54:12I think it's a bit too much for you to take in at the moment, isn't it?

0:54:12 > 0:54:15You've got a lovely place where you are now but this,

0:54:15 > 0:54:18to give you the start in life is incredible.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21Some of the other people that have been through the care system

0:54:21 > 0:54:23have said they kind of feel invisible, like nobody...

0:54:23 > 0:54:25..nobody cares. What about today?

0:54:28 > 0:54:30- It's different today.- Really?

0:54:30 > 0:54:33- Yeah.- This is just the start you need, babe.

0:54:33 > 0:54:35Then let's get you back with the rest of the group

0:54:35 > 0:54:37and show you the rest of the building, shall we? Come on.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53- Amazing.- That's the garden!

0:54:53 > 0:54:56- Shall we go down and have a look at the bottom?- Yes, please.

0:54:58 > 0:55:02That is beautiful. I can't believe what you've managed to do.

0:55:02 > 0:55:03- It's huge.- Yeah.

0:55:03 > 0:55:07It was just a bit of boggy land that we tried our best with.

0:55:07 > 0:55:09Yes.

0:55:09 > 0:55:12Several hundred tonnes of rock and hard-core have gone into this.

0:55:12 > 0:55:17- OK.- Some serious engineering, some massive steels -

0:55:17 > 0:55:19to make this garden happen has been a small miracle.

0:55:24 > 0:55:27It's stunning. It's beautiful that she's got her own

0:55:27 > 0:55:31little mini community as well here, to support her 24 hours a day,

0:55:31 > 0:55:33as well as her own independence.

0:55:33 > 0:55:36Thanks to all those people up there, it's incredible.

0:55:36 > 0:55:37Just a massive thank you.

0:55:43 > 0:55:47What can you do now for the young people leaving care

0:55:47 > 0:55:48in the Swansea area?

0:55:48 > 0:55:53We can offer a really family-orientated atmosphere

0:55:53 > 0:55:56for them, for young people who are lost, a little bit vulnerable,

0:55:56 > 0:55:59a little bit unsure about what's going to happen to them next,

0:55:59 > 0:56:01we've got that opportunity to be their family

0:56:01 > 0:56:05and to be their support network in such a beautiful and bespoke place.

0:56:05 > 0:56:09I don't know anywhere like it, so to give them an identity,

0:56:09 > 0:56:12and give them family, and to give them hope.

0:56:12 > 0:56:15It's really cool.

0:56:15 > 0:56:17- Do you want to come out and meet the builders?- Definitely.

0:56:27 > 0:56:28CROWD APPLAUDS

0:56:33 > 0:56:34Oh, my God!

0:56:36 > 0:56:39I was going to say I was going to look at each and every one of you

0:56:39 > 0:56:40in the eye but I can't.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42There's too many of you!

0:56:42 > 0:56:45We're so overwhelmed with your kindness,

0:56:45 > 0:56:48I am so touched and on behalf of the team,

0:56:48 > 0:56:50we want to tell you that you are going to make

0:56:50 > 0:56:52a huge difference to people's lives.

0:56:52 > 0:56:57It is the scariest and the most traumatic time in someone's life

0:56:57 > 0:57:01and they need a family, they need people around them.

0:57:01 > 0:57:04You have made such a huge statement to every care leaver

0:57:04 > 0:57:06that comes through our door's lives.

0:57:06 > 0:57:09You have told them that they are worthy, that they're not useless

0:57:09 > 0:57:12and that they are worth investing in and that's what you've done.

0:57:12 > 0:57:15We will tell them all about you and we will tell them

0:57:15 > 0:57:18that you believed in them and you believed in the team.

0:57:18 > 0:57:20You're part of our family and we can't thank you enough

0:57:20 > 0:57:23and I'm really, really grateful, so thank you, everyone.

0:57:35 > 0:57:39I'm slightly baffled by the fact that young people who end up in care

0:57:39 > 0:57:42through no fault of their own are stigmatised often in our society

0:57:42 > 0:57:44as difficult and troublemakers.

0:57:44 > 0:57:49Surely we should be giving more care and support to those young people,

0:57:49 > 0:57:53not less. That's why these people have turned out to build a facility

0:57:53 > 0:57:56where Emma can continue her amazing work and who knows how many hundreds

0:57:56 > 0:58:00or thousands of young people's lives she'll be able to turn around.

0:58:00 > 0:58:03Children In Need support projects like this all over the country

0:58:03 > 0:58:05and I am going to ask you to donate,

0:58:05 > 0:58:08because you can change people's lives.

0:58:08 > 0:58:10The numbers to donate are about to come up on screen.

0:58:29 > 0:58:31Your donation will make a difference.
