0:00:07 > 0:00:09- NEWSREADER:- We are in Westminster, where a terror attack

0:00:09 > 0:00:12on the very heart of British democracy left five

0:00:12 > 0:00:15people dead and parliament in lockdown.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19- NEWSREADER:- Five people died and 40 people were injured,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22some of them suffering catastrophic injuries.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24SIRENS WAIL

0:00:24 > 0:00:28The Metropolitan Police are telling us three of their police officers

0:00:28 > 0:00:30injured, two seriously.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36One of those policemen rushed to hospital

0:00:36 > 0:00:39after being hit by the speeding car was Kris Aves.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The attack left Kris paralysed.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48Seven months later, he is still in hospital, away from his family.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52I'm worried about getting daddy time back.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55You know, it's just been taken away from you.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57And it's not fair.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Kris is ready to leave hospital and go home,

0:01:01 > 0:01:05but he can't because his house isn't accessible to a wheelchair.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09I need to rebuild a relationship with my family.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10It has been too long.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Well, that is what WE are going to help Kris do.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17These amazing volunteers will be pulling their weight.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19THEY SHOUT

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Literally working themselves into the ground...

0:01:21 > 0:01:23We are resting him.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26..to bring Kris home to his family, where he belongs.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30We wanted to give back to the people that protect us, you know?

0:01:30 > 0:01:32We have just nine days to do the job.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34All the usual suspects are here.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Our designer this week is the wonderful Gabrielle Blackman.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39And I'm not even going to pretend we had to find an army.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Because the moment people knew what we were doing,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44we had the biggest response ever. So let's get started.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:01:46 > 0:01:49THEY CHEER

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Kris Aves and his partner, Marissa Cooney, have been together for eight years.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12She used to work with my sister and I was out and about and

0:02:12 > 0:02:16we were both single at the time and started having a few drinks,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20- a few chats.- I first met him at his sister's wedding.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23He did the full Monty with some of his cousins.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I think they had some trays or something to spare their modesty,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28so I'm kind of glad I missed that.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32- I didn't see it.- I like to have a little bit of fun,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34play a few little tricks on people.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36They're all Essex boys, aren't they, so...

0:02:36 > 0:02:40- SHE LAUGHS - They're all kind of jokers, really.

0:02:40 > 0:02:41Also, I like to organise, as well.

0:02:41 > 0:02:46Like, Christmas parties, birthday parties and make sure people get involved.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49He is, he's kind, caring, and bubbly.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53After 18 months together and just after his 30th birthday,

0:02:53 > 0:02:58Kris got the best present anyone could wish for - son Thomas.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01When daughter Aoife came along two years later,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04life couldn't have been better.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Little girl, little boy, I'm done.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08I've hit the nail on the head.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12I've won the lottery. I've got Marissa, I've got Thomas, I've got Aoife.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14They'd got the family, a new home,

0:03:14 > 0:03:17and Kris had a steady job in the police force.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Quite the contrast from his younger days as a holiday rep.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23I think from what I did before,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27I realised that I needed to do something to help people.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30It's really hard, it's long hours,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33but I would fully recommend it to anybody.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35In March 2017,

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Kris received a commendation for his exceptional work as a police liaison

0:03:39 > 0:03:43officer. The ceremony was held at the Met police headquarters near the

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Houses of Parliament. Kris' colleague, PC Roger Smith,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48was also up for an award.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50We managed to get out onto the balcony.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53It is quite a nice view there because you've got the Eye

0:03:53 > 0:03:55and you've got Big Ben down there.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58You can actually see Westminster Bridge from where you are.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02We received an award,

0:04:02 > 0:04:07had photos taken, tea and coffee, handshakes...

0:04:08 > 0:04:11..and then we decided that we may go and celebrate.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14We'd actually got onto the other side of the road

0:04:14 > 0:04:17and Kris realised he had forgot his umbrella.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19And I literally turned round and said,

0:04:19 > 0:04:21"Do you know what? I can get it tomorrow.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24"I can ring someone, they can pick it up for me...

0:04:25 > 0:04:28"..I can go and collect it another time."

0:04:28 > 0:04:31And that's the last memory I have of the day.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34It was a fateful decision.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37We were nearly halfway across the bridge.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41The only bit I can remember is the set of headlights coming towards us,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44hitting us and being moved really rapidly.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50The day that had started out in celebration had turned to horror.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54It was just absolute chaos. There were people everywhere.

0:04:54 > 0:05:01There was a water drain off across the bridge and that was just full of blood.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02I was at work.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04I'd heard on the news that there was something going on.

0:05:04 > 0:05:10About three minutes later, I got a call from his boss that he was injured.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12I was shocked, really, but as far as they knew,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14it was a broken leg and a possible broken arm.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18So, actually, in some ways, shock and a bit numb,

0:05:18 > 0:05:23but relief, as well, because it didn't sound too serious and he was alive.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28The next memory I have was about eight days later,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31waking up in King's College with a tube down my throat.

0:05:32 > 0:05:38And...my body covered in sheets and plasters

0:05:38 > 0:05:41and buzzers and wires, etc.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Kris had taken the full impact of the vehicle.

0:05:44 > 0:05:45He had broken both legs,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48had multiple head injuries and a damaged elbow and shoulder.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50But that wasn't the worst of it.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56I dislocated my vertebrae, which damaged my spinal cord.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Because of that, my legs don't work.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Kris has been in hospital ever since the incident,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07separated from his family for nearly seven months.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11The kids just ask a lot of questions about stuff and about,

0:06:11 > 0:06:13"Well, why did daddy get hit?

0:06:13 > 0:06:15"Was he not looking when he crossed the road?"

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Things like that. And it is quite hard to answer.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Being in a wheelchair is really hard.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25To be able to get home would mean the world to me.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27I need to rebuild a relationship with my family.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30For them to be without...

0:06:30 > 0:06:32For my kids to be without a dad, really,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34I'm not going to say that they forget about me,

0:06:34 > 0:06:38but they have definitely missed a big part of their growing up with a dad.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43And I'm ready to sleep in my own bed.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45It has been too long.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49But the house no longer works for Kris now he's in a wheelchair.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52The front step, just to get in, is a massive obstacle.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55The doorways are too narrow for a wheelchair.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59There is just no way he can get upstairs to put the kids to bed.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01And the garden is totally out of bounds.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Without big changes, Kris can't get home.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08He has been here for sort of a day or something,

0:07:08 > 0:07:11obviously couldn't stay overnight.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Was it apparent on that one visit home how difficult it was going to be to move around the house?

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Yeah. He struggles to get in the house.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Even though we sort of built temporary ramps and stuff to get him in.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24He wasn't able to do it by himself.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27He still needed help on the ramps because they were too steep and things

0:07:27 > 0:07:31- like that.- Mm.- So this part where it sort of kinked, was...

0:07:32 > 0:07:36..we had to sort of really manoeuvre to get in and it was sort of just squeezing in,

0:07:36 > 0:07:38sort of trying to put his hands on the top of the wheels.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42As much as what we are doing is obviously going to benefit in terms

0:07:42 > 0:07:45of getting him home, but it is another change, isn't it?

0:07:45 > 0:07:47I mean, from...

0:07:47 > 0:07:48- Another adjustment.- Yeah.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51That's a lot of adjustments to make, isn't it?

0:07:51 > 0:07:55It needs to work for him, but we don't want it to look like anything

0:07:55 > 0:07:57other than a normal home as much as possible.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00And there's a place where we can sort of go into and shut a door

0:08:00 > 0:08:03and it would let us be a family again, the four of us,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06without needing everyone's help to get him in, get him out.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09- Shall we go and meet some of the builders?- Yeah.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16THEY CLAP

0:08:18 > 0:08:21One of the things that I probably ought to say,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24I'm going to say on your behalf, is that they were very happily getting the house

0:08:24 > 0:08:27to the point that they actually wanted it to be.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31We are now having to take apart that house, obviously because of circumstances.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34There are so many adjustments to make all in one go, aren't there?

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Yeah. It needs to be wheelchair accessible for Kris so that we can just do

0:08:38 > 0:08:44normal family things and, yeah, he can get to the children everywhere in the house,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47and just get to be a dad again.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50A massive thank you. For all your time and everything.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52THEY CLAP

0:08:52 > 0:08:54See you.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Listen up, Kris sent us a message, so I wondered if you'd like to listen in.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06First of all, I just want to say thank you for taking this opportunity to

0:09:06 > 0:09:10look after my house. But that's the polite side.

0:09:10 > 0:09:15Now all I want to say is, behave yourselves, no jokes,

0:09:15 > 0:09:17do not mess this up!

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- THEY LAUGH - All the best. See you soon.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22He is such a top lad, honestly.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25And I am really excited about getting him home.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28We have had such an overwhelming response for this one.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31We have actually had to turn volunteers away.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34But unfortunately, there are some people on the site we just can't get rid of.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37- What are your tablets for? - I had a bout o' gout.- A what?

0:09:37 > 0:09:40- Bout o' gout.- He went to the doctors and the doctor gave him some

0:09:40 > 0:09:42tablets he's got to take for the rest of his life.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- One a day. - Only gave him a pack of 28!

0:09:45 > 0:09:47THEY LAUGH

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Yeah, I know!

0:09:49 > 0:09:53But I've cut them in half, so I take half a day.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Hopefully, I'll be there for 56 days.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00The general plan here is to tweak the layout of the house and the outside space

0:10:00 > 0:10:05to make it wheelchair friendly, and get Kris back where he belongs.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07But the big feature for us in this build is a lift,

0:10:07 > 0:10:10and we have never done one like this before.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12We can't put a lift inside. There just isn't the room.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16So we are actually building a lift column on the outside of the building

0:10:16 > 0:10:18and then punching in to the side of the house.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Ground floor, first floor and up in the loft.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Even though Mark seems to have got his car around the back here,

0:10:25 > 0:10:27we have got a slightly bigger problem.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29We can't get the digger past the scaffolding.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Have a look.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36He has got an idea, though, which is always worrying.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Believe it or not, we are going to bring a digger through the house.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Excuse me, you have to ring the doorbell before you come in this house.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45- HE BEEPS HORN - All right, in you come!

0:10:45 > 0:10:48I've never seen a digger going through a house before.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02VOICEOVER: That's not good, is it?

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Did you not want a digger in here?

0:11:04 > 0:11:08- No! Look!- It's all mendable, isn't it? Look...

0:11:08 > 0:11:13We have the man here who is going to make that as if nothing ever happened.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16- You've got to break a few eggs to make some omelettes, haven't you?- Yeah.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18VOICEOVER: And at this rate,

0:11:18 > 0:11:21everyone on site will be having omelettes for lunch.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24Although we're smashing the place up a bit,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27were actually recycling a lot of what was already here.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30We will lay new hard-wearing floors to cope with Kris's wheelchair,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33so this one going elsewhere.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35And we are saving the doors, too,

0:11:35 > 0:11:38as making the doorways work for Kris is so important on this build.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42This here, at the moment,

0:11:42 > 0:11:47is too narrow. It is too narrow to get a wheelchair through.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49So we will take the door out to about that width,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52so he will be able to get into every room on every floor.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Boosh, boosh.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58- Let's talk about the house, shall we?- Yeah.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01We are trying to do the minimal changes in the layout to get the

0:12:01 > 0:12:03maximum impact for Kris.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06And really emphasise what he CAN do, not what he can't do.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10- Mm.- So we want to bring him home to do all the stuff he did before.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Make tea, put the kids to bed.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Just get him back and get normality back.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18But to do that, unfortunately, we do have to move a few walls around.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21We have now had to make this room a lot smaller because of

0:12:21 > 0:12:24where the lift strikes and the turning circles.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27But what I try to do is with every compromise we have to make because

0:12:27 > 0:12:32of accessibility, we add something beautiful and something to change the way you look at a room.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36In actual fact, because of the lack of structural work that we are doing,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39although it doesn't look it at the moment in here,

0:12:39 > 0:12:42but this should actually give more time for you to do the design and go

0:12:42 > 0:12:45to town on the design in a magnificent way.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Magnificence obviously will be happening.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49- Of course.- But I can't say...

0:12:49 > 0:12:52You know, there is a lot of work to do before we get to magnificent o'clock.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56It is crucial for Kris to be able to get around the entire house.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Especially upstairs in the kids' bedrooms, so he can carry out

0:13:01 > 0:13:03all the daddy duties he's so missed.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05On the ground floor here,

0:13:05 > 0:13:08we'll install a bespoke kitchen and adapt a space

0:13:08 > 0:13:11to include a new wet room and handy utility room.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15Upstairs, we'll maximise floor space by building a wall of storage in

0:13:15 > 0:13:18the master bed. And we will move the wall slightly to allow for Kris's

0:13:18 > 0:13:21turning circle out of the lift.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24And on the top floor, the spare room and shower room will be reconfigured

0:13:24 > 0:13:27to allow access for the most impressive part of this build,

0:13:27 > 0:13:29the amazing lift.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31This will get Kris to every room in the house,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35allowing him to be part of regular family life once more.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38We are double banquette-ing in this room.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40One there, one there, so we can still have the dining space,

0:13:40 > 0:13:43sitting space. And it's all going to be fabulous.

0:13:45 > 0:13:46- Why are you laughing?- I'm not.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- Is it my coat again?- No, it is not the coat.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Double banquette is quite funny, isn't it?

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- You're not laughing at banquette? - A little bit.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57Double banquette is even funnier, surely?

0:13:58 > 0:14:01I'm surrounded by barbarians.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03Yes, but smiley barbarians. It is funny.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06So Gaby's idea was to ever-so-slightly play with the layout.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Just nudge things around a little bit to make room for the lift.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12She makes it sound like a renovation with a small r, doesn't she?

0:14:13 > 0:14:17Erm, you might not want to go upstairs for a bit, Gabs...

0:14:17 > 0:14:18Out the back,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21we are also rejigging things a bit so Kris can get around freely and

0:14:21 > 0:14:23join the kids when they are out playing.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25Taking care of that side of things,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27we have our garden designer Mia and our Jules.

0:14:29 > 0:14:35The decking coming out and then becoming a resin bound, curved,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38one to 12 grading going down to what will we we're turning into a

0:14:38 > 0:14:42- hunter's lodge.- Did we just say we're turning the shed into a hunter's lodge?

0:14:42 > 0:14:45The comparisons between the sweeping plains of the Serengeti and the

0:14:45 > 0:14:48urban sprawl of North London aren't obvious, but use your imagination.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51So, the grown-ups will have the posh shed to relax in,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54there will be play space for the kids, and the chickens needn't flap

0:14:54 > 0:14:56as they will be getting a new look coop, too.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59We have had a couple of firsts already today.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02A digger through the house was a new one on me, as is the track saw.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05You see that bit of kit?

0:15:05 > 0:15:08It is going to cut a line straight down.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11But what is worrying is he told me you marked it out.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15So I said, check your measurements. It will be 100 mil out.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Well, they will. They will. They always are.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21There's a lot of important things the other side of that wall.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23You know, like stairs and electrics and people.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Let's hope Mark has got his measurements right.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38So, the room used to come to here.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42The wall was in here. And we have had to shorten it because the lift

0:15:42 > 0:15:47is going to punch through here and you have a small turning space here on the landing.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50So we've reduced that bedroom, made that one slightly smaller,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53which is a bit of a pay-off, a bit of a disappointment in that respect,

0:15:53 > 0:15:57but it does mean now that Kris will be able to get up here and will be

0:15:57 > 0:15:59able to go into the bedroom to read a story.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01You can see that we are making the doors extra wide.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03So there's wide doors.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07He will be able to move around and then get back in the lift and even go to the top floor.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10The jobs are actually starting to mount up.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12The boys are struggling with a stump at the moment.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14It is like extracting a big tooth.

0:16:15 > 0:16:20Because we're not doing a lot upstairs, we don't really need this here.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Right. So, is it insurance?

0:16:23 > 0:16:27- No, it's needed and more. - NICK LAUGHS

0:16:28 > 0:16:32So, here, as you can see, we have taken everything apart.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36This was the master bedroom but it was much smaller and really

0:16:36 > 0:16:39cluttered with storage. So again, when you are talking about accessibility,

0:16:39 > 0:16:42you want everything off the floor, the floor needs to be maximised.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46So we have created a section, a big storage wall here.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Then we are moving...

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Thomas's room has become a little bit smaller,

0:16:51 > 0:16:54but it is still a great room. It is still a double bedroom.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59The track saw has done its bit and the house now has considerably less

0:16:59 > 0:17:00bricks than it used to.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03But did Mark get his measurements right?

0:17:05 > 0:17:10- Bang on.- I think we might have just scored ourselves a hat-trick of firsts.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14As ever, we've got a bucket-load of builders and hundreds of helping hands

0:17:14 > 0:17:17all working together to get Kris home to his family.

0:17:18 > 0:17:23This lot became mates with Kris at the school gates when he set up a dads' club.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Kris, in his wisdom,

0:17:26 > 0:17:29realised that all the mums were going out way too much and he just started

0:17:29 > 0:17:31drinking sessions, curries.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33He's a force of nature, isn't he?

0:17:33 > 0:17:36We all went up to him one night and went up to the hospital and...

0:17:36 > 0:17:39He took over the cricket club!

0:17:39 > 0:17:42All the staff knew him, so he has obviously been there a few times.

0:17:42 > 0:17:43They knew him well.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47So, you have come along to shovel and carry and do whatever is needed, is that right?

0:17:47 > 0:17:49When something terrible has happened,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51you feel a bit helpless and you can't do anything.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Here, we can actually do something and hopefully it is going to make

0:17:54 > 0:17:56things a little bit better for him.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Well, the lift will make a massive difference.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01We have got a couple of days before it arrives,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03so plenty of time to suss it all out.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05Haven't we, Mark?

0:18:06 > 0:18:09The lift has arrived. I didn't realise it was coming today because

0:18:09 > 0:18:11I thought it was being fitted on Friday.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13People think we make this up as we go along.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15I'm starting to think we make this up as we go along.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20It is the first in the country and it has come all the way from Sweden. And it's one hell of a flat pack.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23You're not going to put together with one of those tiny Allen keys!

0:18:23 > 0:18:26No, we're going to put it together with a very tiny builder.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28So, it has arrived two days early, as have the fitters.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31And they've come a long way, too. All the way from Yorkshire?

0:18:31 > 0:18:33- Yes.- Only to find out that he booked you on the wrong day.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35- I don't think it was Mark... - Hold on a minute!

0:18:35 > 0:18:39Don't start that. Thank you very much.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43Do you remember the bit where Gaby said we were going to make

0:18:43 > 0:18:45minimum mess for maximum impact?

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Well, that's not quite going to plan, either.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Cos of the door changes, we have got to just move all the mains.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56There are a few problems on the way of how it has been wired.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00And the only way we can get around to it is to actually re-do it.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02There is a problem in the attic, too.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06The ceiling up there is lower than the rest, and too low for the lift door to open.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09You might have to lose a bit of this and come in.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Might as well take the roof off, eh, Gabs?

0:19:12 > 0:19:15This is the one room that was going to be OK!

0:19:15 > 0:19:20We've touched every bit of the house and we keep on having to unpick it.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23So, it has become a really big build.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Well, it's been an interesting day because we were determined that

0:19:30 > 0:19:34we weren't going to make too much of a mess of the house and try and keep everything in place.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37As you can see, that hasn't exactly gone according to plan.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39We have indeed taken down an enormous number of walls,

0:19:39 > 0:19:41we've started digging holes in the ceiling.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44In fact, it's a bit of a mess, to be honest!

0:19:45 > 0:19:48As you can see, we've dug a small trench in the hallway.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52These are all new walls. We weren't going to put much in, but we decided to put a little bit in here.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54To be fair, it's kind of got away from us today,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56but through no fault of our own.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58And we are ploughing on and getting on top of it,

0:19:58 > 0:20:01and tomorrow's going to be a much better day again. I'm sure of it.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14Kris has been here in Stoke Mandeville Hospital for the past

0:20:14 > 0:20:17seven months. Physically, he's ready to go home.

0:20:18 > 0:20:23My physios here have been working round the clock with me,

0:20:23 > 0:20:25getting me exercising,

0:20:25 > 0:20:30stretching, assisted walking, which has been amazing.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32It really has.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36Emotionally, I'm definitely ready for home.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38100%.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42Kris hasn't had proper family time at home since he was rushed into hospital.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46To see the upstairs in my house...

0:20:47 > 0:20:50..I can't explain what it means.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53It's, like, my kids' bedrooms are upstairs.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55All their toys are upstairs.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57So, they spend half their time up there.

0:20:57 > 0:21:02Kris has a lot of daddy time to claw back, especially with son Thomas.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04We had a few complications with Thomas.

0:21:04 > 0:21:09He had a heart issue, and he spent about six and a half months in

0:21:09 > 0:21:14Great Ormond Street, so we didn't get to spend the first, probably,

0:21:14 > 0:21:20year with him doing what parents do.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22I know now, as he's growing older,

0:21:22 > 0:21:25it will be a lot of getting yourself in the garden,

0:21:25 > 0:21:27kicking a football about.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31My little girl as well, it makes me sad when I think forward...

0:21:32 > 0:21:35..that I won't be able to get up and do it with them.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41There will be other things. You know, you can go to the cinema.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44Yeah, that's easy. But to go swimming,

0:21:44 > 0:21:49I don't know how I'm going to be in a pool in a fun session with them.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52I won't be able to stand up and kick a football with them.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54And I kind of just feel...

0:21:56 > 0:21:59..you know, it's just been taken away from you.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02And it's not fair.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17Day two, the sun is shining and the place is already a hive of activity.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Billy's on absolutely cracking form.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21He's gone straight through the heating pipe.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24So, he's depressurised the full system,

0:22:24 > 0:22:27and emptied the whole tank onto the floor.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29I was trying to come up from beneath.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32And I believed this wall was in...

0:22:32 > 0:22:34This wall was in line with the wall downstairs.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36But it weren't.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40So, instead of coming up where I thought I was coming up in there,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42I've come up in the middle of the bathroom.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46But, unfortunately, I've just caught

0:22:46 > 0:22:49the pipe. Just, just.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53He's not coming anywhere near my garden. Don't let him out here.

0:22:53 > 0:22:58But this floor's coming up, so it's helped them, anyhow, really, to get the floor up earlier.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Yeah, One Pipe Burnsy, we call him.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04He goes through one a week.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08The only ups and downs we need on-site today are from these boys with the lift.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11And with Billy well out of the way, Jules can safely crack on.

0:23:11 > 0:23:17We're just screwing some handles to the shed to be able to pick it up

0:23:17 > 0:23:20and manually move it. But it's proving to be quite heavy.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27- Oh, Daily Mirror in the skip. - My gosh!

0:23:28 > 0:23:31- From...- "After 60 years, I quit, says Nick Knowles."

0:23:31 > 0:23:33THEY LAUGH

0:23:34 > 0:23:36As MP.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44- Stand aside, everyone. We'll do it. - Come on then, girls.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46THEY SHOUT

0:23:49 > 0:23:52Lovely, well done...

0:23:54 > 0:23:55POSH VOICE: Birmingham 3-2 West Ham.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57Darling, I hate to interrupt,

0:23:57 > 0:24:00but could they deliver all these build materials?

0:24:00 > 0:24:02Gillingham 1-0 Doncaster.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Wahey! It's finished!

0:24:04 > 0:24:07And in case you were wondering, Southampton 5-0 Derby.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Jolly good show, Saints!

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Lots of people are related in here,

0:24:13 > 0:24:17like the digger driver's related to the bloke who's doing the thing over there, who is related to...

0:24:17 > 0:24:19- I'm related to Kris.- Oh, are you? - He's my cousin.- Is he?

0:24:19 > 0:24:22- Yeah.- Who are you working with?

0:24:22 > 0:24:24This guy here, Lewis, he's my other cousin.

0:24:24 > 0:24:25- Yeah, family affair, then?- Yeah.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28As a family, when you see this turn up,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31and know this is being done for one of your own, it must be quite moving,

0:24:31 > 0:24:34- I would've thought. - Erm, talking to you now,

0:24:34 > 0:24:36I'm finding it hard, trying to keep it in.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39But it's... I don't know.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Because the community have turned up?

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Cos everybody's turned up, everyone's so helpful,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46they're on your side, do you know what I mean?

0:24:46 > 0:24:49- Everyone's together to help Kris and Marissa.- Yeah.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51It's amazing what people are doing.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55Yes, they're an amazing bunch, even though some are slightly terrifying.

0:24:55 > 0:24:56Look, there's a Viking there.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59A man so mighty, he laughs in the face of power tools.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04- You got any other skills? - Very little.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06LAUGHTER

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Viking see rock, Viking smash rock.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11He's a real Viking.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14When Kris came home for the day,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17the smallest of steps became a massive obstacle,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20so we need to make a seamless path to the front door.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22And there's a bit more recycling here,

0:25:22 > 0:25:27as we'll use the old crazy paving as hard-core for the new resin path.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31Oh, look. Concrete.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33- That went... - Yes, that's it, that's it.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36We went to lunch the other day and, as we were walking down the road,

0:25:36 > 0:25:38going down the high street was this company.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41And I said, write this down, he said, "I haven't got a pen."

0:25:41 > 0:25:43You radioed the number through saying,

0:25:43 > 0:25:46"I think we might have found someone to supply us with some concrete."

0:25:46 > 0:25:49That's the kind of attitude we've had from everybody in the area,

0:25:49 > 0:25:51isn't it, when we go, "Can we have...?"

0:25:51 > 0:25:54They're like, "Yeah, straight away, on its way, don't worry about it."

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Without such positive attitudes from trades,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58these builds just wouldn't be possible.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02Many of Kris's colleagues have also given up their free time to help out.

0:26:02 > 0:26:09Superintendent Dawn Morris was presenting the award to Kris just before the attack.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12Having a lovely laugh afterwards over a cup of tea, exactly like this.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15And then when it finished, they left, as did everyone else.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19Very suddenly you could hear sirens, noise, commotion,

0:26:19 > 0:26:23phone calls started to go in to say that this dreadful attack had happened.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27So, myself and colleagues jumped in a car and drove quickly over to our

0:26:27 > 0:26:31special operations room and started standing up the command to arrange

0:26:31 > 0:26:32and coordinate the response.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35How does that feel, though, when you're in the middle of doing such

0:26:35 > 0:26:38an important job, and you suddenly realise that somebody you've just been talking to

0:26:38 > 0:26:41is caught up in it? Because there must be a point where you found out.

0:26:41 > 0:26:46Yeah. Erm... You've somehow got to put your own emotions to one side

0:26:46 > 0:26:48and carry on doing what it is we are there to do.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51And it's massively important that we get it right down there.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53Look at the response here. You've had a walk round.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55- What do you make of it? - Oh, it's absolutely amazing.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59Just... The atmosphere is fantastic.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02We, unfortunately, don't always deal with all of the nice aspects of

0:27:02 > 0:27:07community, and this is a wonderful reminder of how communities should work.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10Isn't it fantastic that we have people like Dawn and Kris and all their

0:27:10 > 0:27:13colleagues to help look after us, day in, day out?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15Right, back on the build, there's problems.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17There is an integral part of the lift missing,

0:27:17 > 0:27:21and that's the rings that go round the lift that pin it to the building.

0:27:21 > 0:27:22They haven't arrived.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26This is yet another setback for our friends from the north.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29We're going to use that scaffolding temporary for now.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Till the hoops arrive.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34Otherwise, there's nothing we can do.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37But these brilliant guys are happy to stay another couple of days,

0:27:37 > 0:27:43as they are aware how important it is to get this done and reunite this family.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47It's impossible to know how anyone would cope in a situation like Kris

0:27:47 > 0:27:52and Marissa's, where life has been turned upside down by such sudden

0:27:52 > 0:27:54unexpected horror.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58For you it must have felt like you had been shot out of a cannon,

0:27:58 > 0:28:01seven months ago, you know, because there's so much to deal with.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04It was overwhelming. It was just surreal.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06I didn't really know...

0:28:06 > 0:28:09What was the toughest point, do you think?

0:28:09 > 0:28:11Not seeing him before he had surgery,

0:28:11 > 0:28:13cos I'd missed him by a few minutes.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17And waiting for him to come round.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20Did you talk to him whilst you were waiting?

0:28:20 > 0:28:23Yeah. Yeah. Don't know what about, actually.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25I felt silly talking to him at first,

0:28:25 > 0:28:29but then they tell you to keep reminding them where they are and what's happened,

0:28:29 > 0:28:32if they can hear you. We kind of did that quite a lot.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Who are you most upset for, him or the kids?

0:28:34 > 0:28:36Him.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40And upset for the kids, too, but they're young enough to, I think,

0:28:40 > 0:28:45adapt to that, whereas, yeah, I think it's tough for Kris.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49Just the things that he won't be able to two that you take the granted before.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Yeah.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55We'd go out and do something, cinema, whatever, and then

0:28:55 > 0:28:58he has to go back and we... And you start calling hospital home.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01You know, "You're going home, what time are you going home?"

0:29:01 > 0:29:05- Things like that. - Yeah, that's not right, is it?- No.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08Do you have a vision of the future? Do you have a hope of how things will be?

0:29:08 > 0:29:11It was kind of a running joke while he was in hospital about he had six

0:29:11 > 0:29:14months before he had to be back and making the tea and toast.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17So, yeah, he wants to be able to do things.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19He wants to be able to do dinner and stuff.

0:29:19 > 0:29:24He wants to be able to, you know, look after the kids.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27I think at this point he's just lacking in confidence about doing things on his own.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31And it's very early days, really. It's a lot to get used to, a lot to...

0:29:31 > 0:29:34- Yeah. It will come. - Find new ways of doing everything.

0:29:34 > 0:29:39People would fall apart in this situation, and I think a lot of us would.

0:29:39 > 0:29:44I think I would. And he hasn't, and he really has...

0:29:45 > 0:29:51..held it together and got on with it and I think that makes everyone around him feel OK.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53In a few days' time, after being away for seven months,

0:29:53 > 0:29:56having walked out the door that morning, he'll be coming home.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Yeah. It's been a long time coming.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03Well, there won't be long now.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05We're halfway through and the place is starting

0:30:05 > 0:30:06to look like a house again.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11- Have you enjoyed it? - Yes, very much.

0:30:11 > 0:30:14And we've got a princess with us.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16Here it is, our princess.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Lovely, isn't it? Lovely to see it all happening.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25You know, they're like a load of ants

0:30:25 > 0:30:28building an ants' nest.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32Good job, too, as the big push today is going to be in the garden.

0:30:32 > 0:30:34The resin path is being laid this afternoon,

0:30:34 > 0:30:37but we've got the small matter of a lawn to lay, decking to deck,

0:30:37 > 0:30:42sheds to pin, but about 500 barrows of topsoil to get through first.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44At least the neighbours are on our side.

0:30:45 > 0:30:49- Listen, you're next-door neighbours here and I just wanted to say thank you very much.- Oh.- Not at all.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52- Anything we can do to help. - He's such a lovely fella.

0:30:52 > 0:30:53- Yeah.- Anything we can do to help.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56Really? What do you think about all these guys that have turned up?

0:30:56 > 0:30:58Bearing in mind none of these are earning any money.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01I think it's absolutely fantastic.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Every time they go past the window, they smile, it's really nice.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Do you know, I haven't heard a swear word yet.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08No, we don't have that kind of thing.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10Don't have that kind of thing on our sites.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12A little group hug.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Thank you very much.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20Tell them how we know each other, young man?

0:31:20 > 0:31:22You used to play with my old man.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25- You know my grandad. - Yeah. Fred, his grandad.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28- You used to coach his grandad at football, did you?- No!

0:31:28 > 0:31:29LAUGHTER

0:31:29 > 0:31:32His dad. There's another generation.

0:31:32 > 0:31:33His dad, Pat...

0:31:33 > 0:31:36Hi, Pat. ..who used to play football with me.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39And he was a great footballer. A great little winger.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41What did he say about my talent?

0:31:41 > 0:31:42He said you were a good "little" footballer.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44LAUGHTER

0:31:47 > 0:31:50Hey, guess what, the hoops have arrived, the hoops have arrived!

0:31:50 > 0:31:53Ah, now that's very, very good. They're quite important those bits.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55They fix the lift to the house.

0:31:55 > 0:31:56NICK CHUCKLES

0:31:56 > 0:31:59Should have arrived at eight o'clock on Wednesday. It's now Friday.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02Better late than never!

0:32:02 > 0:32:04The lift is going to get Kris up to the rooms

0:32:04 > 0:32:06where Thomas and Aoife spend so much of their time,

0:32:06 > 0:32:10and back into the routine of being a dad.

0:32:10 > 0:32:11- LIFT:- Floor two, doors opening.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14- How are doing, sir?- Very well.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16- What are you building for us? - Wardrobes.

0:32:16 > 0:32:19Sliding wardrobes. Got a lovely pull-down rail.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21- Ideal for him, obviously. - Absolutely perfect.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24It enables him to pull the rail down with ease.

0:32:24 > 0:32:25Terrific stuff. Thank you very much.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30But bringing a man back home to his family after seven months

0:32:30 > 0:32:33is something we can all see is important.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35I didn't see my kids for the first four days doing this,

0:32:35 > 0:32:37because of the early starts and late nights.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40That was bad enough. Several months, I can't imagine it.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43We wanted to give back to the people that protect us, you know.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47That, for me, was where it hit home, you know.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49We wanted to be part of that.

0:32:49 > 0:32:50I couldn't agree more.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53Out in the garden there's a Flintstones vibe going on with all

0:32:53 > 0:32:55the block work, complete with a couple of dinosaurs.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Welcome to Jurassic Spark.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00You're very similar age, apparently.

0:33:00 > 0:33:0167, he told me.

0:33:01 > 0:33:04- What's your date of birth? - Fifth of the first.

0:33:04 > 0:33:05Can you believe that?

0:33:05 > 0:33:07I'm third of the first.

0:33:07 > 0:33:11I'm two days older and how many years?

0:33:11 > 0:33:14134 years between us.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17Forever young!

0:33:19 > 0:33:21It has been a sterling effort.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24This lot really have worked themselves into the ground over the past few days.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26I mean literally.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29He wouldn't move out of the way, for the hard-core coming in,

0:33:29 > 0:33:31so we'll get him out at lunchtime.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34We're resting him.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38Come on, let's go, let's go, let's go.

0:33:38 > 0:33:40- Everyone happy?- Yes!

0:33:40 > 0:33:44With the scaffold down, it should be a bit easier to get the digger out

0:33:44 > 0:33:45than it was getting it in.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50I could get a bus through there, mate.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53These smiley, happy trades are working wonders.

0:33:53 > 0:33:54They're just an ordinary bunch of people,

0:33:54 > 0:33:57but Kris's mum Julia knows what an extraordinary difference

0:33:57 > 0:33:59their help will make.

0:34:01 > 0:34:03So, where were you when you heard the news?

0:34:03 > 0:34:05I was at work. I work in a school.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07We didn't know exactly what had happened.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10We knew that he'd been injured, but not how severely.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13Then you're standing there in the hospital and looking at your little

0:34:13 > 0:34:16boy? He might be six-foot something, but he's...

0:34:16 > 0:34:17No, he is still my young baby, yeah.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19He is still my youngest and...

0:34:19 > 0:34:22..and that was hard.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25But the nurses, the doctors, were absolutely amazing.

0:34:25 > 0:34:29And then, as soon as he woke up, he started talking.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33Cracking jokes, teasing people.

0:34:34 > 0:34:37That's his whole attitude. That is how he always has been through life,

0:34:37 > 0:34:39- ever since he was little. - You know, I'm trying to think...

0:34:39 > 0:34:41Put in my mind my youngsters.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44I can't even begin to imagine what that feels like.

0:34:44 > 0:34:46I think the thing is, I can't change things.

0:34:46 > 0:34:47I cannot change things.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51I would rather channel my energies into doing something for him.

0:34:51 > 0:34:55That's what these people are doing. They've come from all over the country to do it.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58- Wonderful.- And he will be able to get to all the parts of the house.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00- Amazing.- And garden. Just don't tell him.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02I won't. I won't.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04Yeah, you will. If Marissa puts the thumbscrews on you.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07I'll tell him he's in a shed in the back garden.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11We don't deal in sheds here, Julia,

0:35:11 > 0:35:13only posh lodges.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17About a billion barrows later, the garden is ready for the resin

0:35:17 > 0:35:20pathway and I reckon our volunteers have earned themselves a rest.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Yeah, maybe not him, though.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Look at them. You could make a calendar, couldn't you?

0:35:30 > 0:35:33- Yeah.- Mr May on the right.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35Mr Definitely Would in the middle.

0:35:35 > 0:35:36LAUGHTER

0:35:36 > 0:35:38Which month would you like to be, sir?

0:35:38 > 0:35:40June me, June.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42Because he's a little ray of sunshine, that's why.

0:35:43 > 0:35:47It's the tireless efforts of this lot working day and night who will

0:35:47 > 0:35:50make this house work again for Kris and looks like it's going to be

0:35:50 > 0:35:52another late one.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57Do you remember the first time you were aware how serious...

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Did you wake up and think what the hell's going on?

0:36:00 > 0:36:02I don't really remember that.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04I remember obviously having a tube down my throat and this,

0:36:04 > 0:36:06that and everything.

0:36:06 > 0:36:09But they didn't want to overload me with information

0:36:09 > 0:36:12about how serious my injuries were.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17The first person who was there when I opened my eyes was Marissa, which,

0:36:17 > 0:36:19obviously, amazing.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21She's an extraordinary woman and has had to deal with

0:36:21 > 0:36:24an extraordinary amount in the last few months.

0:36:24 > 0:36:25Mm-hm.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27I feel guilty,

0:36:27 > 0:36:29a little bit.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Just being here, in here so long.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34She's been a single mum for all those months.

0:36:36 > 0:36:37How do you now, in retrospect,

0:36:37 > 0:36:41feel about the incident and the person that did this?

0:36:43 > 0:36:45- I don't think about it.- Do you not?

0:36:45 > 0:36:50No, not one bit. I think if I was to think back about it...

0:36:53 > 0:36:55..I would think about...

0:36:58 > 0:36:59..PC Keith Palmer...

0:37:01 > 0:37:03..and the numerous people who also got injured on the bridge.

0:37:05 > 0:37:07I'd feel for those people.

0:37:08 > 0:37:10You managed to get home for a day.

0:37:10 > 0:37:15Yeah, yeah. I got to see the house from the downstairs.

0:37:17 > 0:37:20But just being in my house...

0:37:20 > 0:37:21..it's...

0:37:21 > 0:37:24It's kind of changed already.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26It just felt different.

0:37:28 > 0:37:32I just... That whole day-to-day

0:37:32 > 0:37:35of getting up, getting showered, getting dressed,

0:37:35 > 0:37:37having your breakfast.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39That structure of my life's been taken out.

0:37:40 > 0:37:44And instead, I've now got... I wake up,

0:37:44 > 0:37:47I sometimes have to pull a red chord for a nurse to come

0:37:47 > 0:37:49and help me get out of bed.

0:37:49 > 0:37:53And how do you feel about the fact that we've come to help you in

0:37:53 > 0:37:58- your situation? - How do I feel? Over the moon.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00What are you most looking forward to?

0:38:00 > 0:38:02Having a full day with my kids.

0:38:02 > 0:38:07The big, big thing of mine is going to be putting them to bed, as well.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11Being able to get upstairs and tuck them in at night.

0:38:13 > 0:38:15Well, that's what we're all working towards.

0:38:15 > 0:38:16We've got just two days to go,

0:38:16 > 0:38:19but it seems the weather gods have stopped smiling on us.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22I suppose it's good news for the plants, though.

0:38:33 > 0:38:35When you bend over,

0:38:35 > 0:38:38your stomach pushes against your lungs and you get out of breath.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41It's a good gauge of when I know I'm getting a little bit too heavy.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49See? Look at that. Somebody's trying to tempt me there.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52I just had a chocolate bar thrust at me.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56You know, when I was a weaker man, I would have ate that.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59Not any more.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02We won't show you him scrambling around in the skip...

0:39:02 > 0:39:03Oh, there it is!

0:39:03 > 0:39:05NICK CHUCKLES

0:39:06 > 0:39:08- This is the poshest... - IMITATES CHICKEN

0:39:08 > 0:39:09..chicken run in...

0:39:09 > 0:39:12- IMITATES CHICKEN - ..Peckham.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15Come and talk me through this.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17Warm and happy chickens lay more eggs.

0:39:17 > 0:39:22IMITATES CHICKEN

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Yes, he is the result of a very nasty experiment in the '60s.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28We've just got one more day to get the job done and everyone's pulling

0:39:28 > 0:39:29together to get the house finished.

0:39:29 > 0:39:34The power of community spirit is something decorator John knows only too well.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37A friend of my wife is a friend of Kris.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39It's a shame what happened to him.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43There's a lot of good people in the world who will help him out.

0:39:43 > 0:39:48My nephew got murdered back in 2008.

0:39:49 > 0:39:51It was tragic.

0:39:51 > 0:39:56I see all the community get together and help the family out

0:39:56 > 0:39:58as best they could. It was nice.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01Community spirit. There's not much of that about today, is there?

0:40:03 > 0:40:04But there is bundles here.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08John and the other decorators are doing a sterling job,

0:40:08 > 0:40:12but there's been a banquette bombshell in the kitchen.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14Have you seen Carl?

0:40:14 > 0:40:19The banquette was going to be made off-site, and then it wasn't made off-site,

0:40:19 > 0:40:25and we need to finish everything. It needs to be done today

0:40:25 > 0:40:29and words are sort of coming out all wrong because I'm now in a massive panic.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33So, this... And we can't put anything else here,

0:40:33 > 0:40:37because Kris's turning circle has all been measured out and we had to

0:40:37 > 0:40:40have a seating area there, and it cannot be off-the-shelf,

0:40:40 > 0:40:43it's got to be bespoke. This is the exact situation I was really

0:40:43 > 0:40:45hoping not to be in right now.

0:40:49 > 0:40:50I'm under instruction.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53- Oh, are you?- This is not my job.

0:40:53 > 0:40:54This is not your job. What is your job?

0:40:54 > 0:40:57I work in the control room, police control room.

0:40:57 > 0:40:58- Oh, do you?- Yeah.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02OK. Were you there the day that Kris had his incident?

0:41:02 > 0:41:04I was. I was on duty.

0:41:04 > 0:41:09We took the first call, so it came into our major incident room.

0:41:09 > 0:41:10And did you know him already?

0:41:10 > 0:41:14- No.- But you've decided to come down and be a decorator for today?

0:41:14 > 0:41:17Yes. I was, erm...

0:41:17 > 0:41:20When I was eight, my dad had an accident whilst at work, on the job,

0:41:20 > 0:41:22as well. He was a policeman.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25- Yeah.- And he was left in a wheelchair for a couple of years,

0:41:25 > 0:41:28or a year, while I was growing up.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31So, I know what the kids and I know what his wife will be going through.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33How did you feel when you heard we were coming to do this

0:41:33 > 0:41:36and it was somebody you'd obviously been involved with at the time?

0:41:36 > 0:41:38I had to come.

0:41:38 > 0:41:39And so many people feel that.

0:41:39 > 0:41:43It's heart-warming how many with their own awful experiences can

0:41:43 > 0:41:46turn that into a positive thing for others.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49With the time fast approaching magnificent o'clock, worktops are

0:41:49 > 0:41:53going in, and that's usually a sign that we are nearly finished.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55God, it's here!

0:41:55 > 0:41:58But Gaby's still stressed out.

0:41:58 > 0:41:59Always got to keep a cool head.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05When he's not making emergency banquettes, he's driving lifeboats,

0:42:05 > 0:42:07so that's fine. We'll be all right now.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11- You've got nothing to worry about. - I do have lots to worry about,

0:42:11 > 0:42:14I just haven't revealed all my worries to you, because...

0:42:14 > 0:42:16You see, I can't speak then.

0:42:16 > 0:42:19You can't. You have gone a little bit that way today.

0:42:19 > 0:42:21Because... GARBLED SPEECH

0:42:21 > 0:42:23You've been doing that a little bit today.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25It's my mental in-tray is at maximum capacity.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28- Is it?- Which is not hard to do.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30- You better get it, better get on, I think.- Yeah.

0:42:30 > 0:42:35GARBLED SPEECH You're never going to get it done.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39And that's how you help a designer make her feel happy when the furniture's arriving.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41- What's the matter? - What is the problem?

0:42:41 > 0:42:44Headboards won't go upstairs. So, do we cut the headboards down?

0:42:44 > 0:42:46No, we don't cut the headboards down.

0:42:46 > 0:42:48- We can sand them down a bit. - No!

0:42:48 > 0:42:51She's not getting any calmer, is she?

0:42:51 > 0:42:54This is like a rule one of the Muppets School of Interior Design -

0:42:54 > 0:42:56measure things before you try and get them...

0:42:56 > 0:42:59Keep going.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01- Oh, it's so nearly there.- Oh.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03Keep going, keep going, keep going up.

0:43:03 > 0:43:04Oh, dear, oh, dear.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07Now we've got to repair the ceiling.

0:43:07 > 0:43:11All right, wait. Come down and then we'll whack it up into that corner.

0:43:12 > 0:43:13Yay!

0:43:13 > 0:43:15Oh, my God.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18Just a little bit of filler and it'll be as good as new.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21- They're going to lynch me. - Yes.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23- Gaby!- Yeah?

0:43:23 > 0:43:28I've just slipped and I've put my fist and my foot through the headboards.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30Sorry, it was an accident.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32Accidents happen, apparently.

0:43:35 > 0:43:37I can see he's angry even just from his hand.

0:43:40 > 0:43:41Just getting the mattress up now.

0:43:44 > 0:43:46Could I just point out my colleague's dress sense?

0:43:46 > 0:43:49Look at this here. She's a high-end designer, this lady, look.

0:43:49 > 0:43:53You don't understand what I've put together here.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55Nobody wears two overshoes any more.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58Come on, everybody in the house, if you're not working, get outside!

0:43:58 > 0:44:00We need it finished now!

0:44:00 > 0:44:01Now?!

0:44:01 > 0:44:03Now!

0:44:03 > 0:44:05Five, four, three, two, one, now!

0:44:05 > 0:44:08He may be small, but his mouth is mighty.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10Everyone here has worked like a trouper and,

0:44:10 > 0:44:12through the sheer power of all these people,

0:44:12 > 0:44:15it looks like we might just make it.

0:44:20 > 0:44:23Seven months ago, Kris Aves was left with life-changing injuries

0:44:23 > 0:44:25after the Westminster Bridge attack.

0:44:27 > 0:44:31I dislocated my vertebrae, which had damaged my spinal cord.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33Because of that,

0:44:33 > 0:44:35my legs don't work.

0:44:36 > 0:44:38Kris has been in hospital ever since,

0:44:38 > 0:44:4140 miles away from his family.

0:44:41 > 0:44:45I'm worried about getting daddy time back.

0:44:45 > 0:44:49The kids just ask a lot of questions about stuff, and about

0:44:49 > 0:44:52"Why did Daddy get hit? Was he not looking when he crossed the road?"

0:44:52 > 0:44:55Things like that. And it's quite hard to answer.

0:44:55 > 0:44:59Kris couldn't get home as the house just wasn't accessible any more.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01I'm definitely ready for home.

0:45:01 > 0:45:03It's been too long.

0:45:05 > 0:45:08Hundreds of people came from near and far,

0:45:08 > 0:45:11giving their time and effort to help bring him back to his family.

0:45:13 > 0:45:15And, my word, did they deliver.

0:45:20 > 0:45:25When we arrived nine days ago, this house was no longer a home for Kris.

0:45:25 > 0:45:26But gone are the steps that stopped him

0:45:26 > 0:45:28even getting through the front door.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31In their place, a seamless paved driveway.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36The wonky hallways have been straightened up with continuous

0:45:36 > 0:45:38flooring and widened doorways,

0:45:38 > 0:45:42so Kris can freely move about from the minute he gets in the house.

0:45:44 > 0:45:47The living room has been transformed into a sumptuous space,

0:45:47 > 0:45:50ideal for cosy nights in watching movies.

0:45:53 > 0:45:56And we've created a stylish wet room and utility...

0:45:59 > 0:46:02..which leads us to the new-look kitchen-diner,

0:46:02 > 0:46:06a space that is sure to become the heart of the home.

0:46:06 > 0:46:09The new units means that Kris will be able to cook, just like before.

0:46:09 > 0:46:14And the new dining area is a perfect space to share meals, watch TV,

0:46:14 > 0:46:16or just hang out together as a family.

0:46:19 > 0:46:24And, of course, the state-of-the-art lift is the key to giving Kris back

0:46:24 > 0:46:27his independence. He couldn't get upstairs to the rooms where the

0:46:27 > 0:46:29children spend so much of their time.

0:46:29 > 0:46:32But now Kris will be able to read Aoife bedtime stories

0:46:32 > 0:46:35in her new den, before a kiss goodnight.

0:46:39 > 0:46:42And the transformation in Thomas's room takes it into another

0:46:42 > 0:46:45stratosphere. He's got a desk to do his homework.

0:46:45 > 0:46:49And it's an ideal space for the daddy duties Kris has so missed

0:46:49 > 0:46:51for the past seven months.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55Kris is desperate to sleep in his own bed,

0:46:55 > 0:46:58and now he'll be able to get upstairs and do just that.

0:46:58 > 0:47:03We've moved the master bedroom walls around a bit to maximise floor space

0:47:03 > 0:47:04and create a wall of storage.

0:47:07 > 0:47:10Next door, we've made space in the family bathroom for Kris to bathe

0:47:10 > 0:47:12the kids before bed.

0:47:12 > 0:47:15And we've put an en-suite in the attic, too,

0:47:15 > 0:47:18so there is now a bathroom on every floor.

0:47:18 > 0:47:23And remember, Kris hasn't even been up there since it was converted.

0:47:23 > 0:47:25It's now a luxurious spare room.

0:47:26 > 0:47:28Outside, the steps have gone

0:47:28 > 0:47:31and the patio has been built out into a high terrace.

0:47:31 > 0:47:35A resin path now runs like a river of silk all the way down

0:47:35 > 0:47:37to the fancy new hunter's lodge.

0:47:37 > 0:47:39There's something for everyone out here.

0:47:39 > 0:47:43The kids have a play area, including a play cafe,

0:47:43 > 0:47:46and even the chickens have the poshest coop known to man or chicken.

0:47:50 > 0:47:55It's been a long seven months, but Kris can finally come home.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57I'm feeling very emotional right now.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02It's all about to start - my new life in my new home.

0:48:12 > 0:48:15- Look at that, look at that, look at that.- Hello.

0:48:15 > 0:48:17Dad!

0:48:17 > 0:48:18Hello, baby girl.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21- A blue door. - A blue door.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23- And a driveway. - And a driveway.

0:48:25 > 0:48:28Guys, honestly, thank you.

0:48:28 > 0:48:30- Welcome home.- No, thank you.

0:48:32 > 0:48:33Right, leaving just us.

0:48:34 > 0:48:38- Ready?- Yeah.- Let's go and have a look at it. Come on.

0:48:45 > 0:48:48It's amazing. I love it.

0:48:48 > 0:48:50I... I'm not usually lost for words.

0:48:50 > 0:48:54The first thing to say is you've just wheeled yourself through your own front door without

0:48:54 > 0:48:56- any difficulty at all.- It's amazing.

0:48:59 > 0:49:01Oh, my God, this room is so nice.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03It's so pretty.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05- It is beautiful.- She's got a good eye, our Gaby, hasn't she?

0:49:05 > 0:49:07Yes.

0:49:07 > 0:49:09It is super, isn't it? It really is.

0:49:14 > 0:49:16- Oh, wow.- Oh, my gosh.

0:49:17 > 0:49:21I love it. Everything is just so accessible for me.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23On that very basis, there's your oven.

0:49:23 > 0:49:27- If you want to go to the cooker, you can tuck your knees underneath. - Wow, look at that.

0:49:27 > 0:49:29It means I'll probably have to do more of the cooking.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34On the other side, if come round into the dining room area.

0:49:34 > 0:49:36Parquet flooring all the way through.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39It's... Do you know what, it's so easy to get round.

0:49:39 > 0:49:40- It's beautiful.- Lovely.

0:49:42 > 0:49:43Welcome home, Daddy.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59Oh, my God!

0:49:59 > 0:50:00It's amazing.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03It doesn't look anything like I imagined.

0:50:03 > 0:50:04Where are my chickens?

0:50:04 > 0:50:07In the largest penthouse chicken coop in the history of mankind.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09Oh, there's a little swing in it.

0:50:09 > 0:50:12- Look at that.- Literally, the luckiest chickens in the world.

0:50:12 > 0:50:14Aren't they just!

0:50:15 > 0:50:17We've got a cafe for the kids.

0:50:17 > 0:50:19- Oh.- Oh, my God.

0:50:19 > 0:50:21They will absolutely love that.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26- Oh...- It's a great little snug hideaway, isn't it?

0:50:26 > 0:50:29Get your mates down there. You can put a television down here if you want to watch sport down here.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32- A little bar set up, maybe. - Don't even... I know what he's thinking already.

0:50:32 > 0:50:35- A little fridge.- You know what I'm thinking.- A bit of a man cave.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37Man cave. I love it.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42Oh, my God.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46- Look at this.- Wow, that's great.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50- All right?- More than.

0:50:50 > 0:50:54It's just going to make things so much easier.

0:50:54 > 0:50:58People will never understand until they are in your position.

0:50:58 > 0:51:00It's about independence and dignity, as well, isn't it?

0:51:00 > 0:51:04- No more struggles.- It's lovely.

0:51:04 > 0:51:06I wasn't expecting this.

0:51:06 > 0:51:08I wasn't expecting this and...

0:51:13 > 0:51:14It's out of this world.

0:51:15 > 0:51:17It really is.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23Wow. Look at that.

0:51:23 > 0:51:25I think you'll agree, that looks pretty posh.

0:51:25 > 0:51:28- Doesn't it just.- Only one of its kind anywhere in the country.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30- LIFT:- Doors opening.

0:51:30 > 0:51:31Doors opening.

0:51:40 > 0:51:42So you're now up in the loft room.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45I've not been up here for a long time.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48We've changed it a little bit.

0:51:48 > 0:51:49- So, guest room.- Beautiful.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52- It's pretty, isn't it?- I think we might have people staying every weekend.

0:51:52 > 0:51:55- Do you think?- There's so much to look at when you come in.

0:51:55 > 0:51:59There is. You turn your head once, you turn it back again and there's something new that you haven't seen.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04This was the key thing, really, wasn't it, about you being able

0:52:04 > 0:52:07to get up here so you can read the kid stories and put them to bed?

0:52:07 > 0:52:10Exactly that. Exactly that. That's what I've missed.

0:52:12 > 0:52:14- Oh.- Oh, my God.

0:52:15 > 0:52:17My little girl is going to love it.

0:52:17 > 0:52:18She is going to love it.

0:52:18 > 0:52:20Oh, I just wish it would stay this clean and tidy.

0:52:21 > 0:52:24The only difficulty for you is closing the curtains for them,

0:52:24 > 0:52:26isn't it? Except...

0:52:26 > 0:52:28..it isn't. If you press the down button.

0:52:31 > 0:52:35First thing when you come up in the morning, press the stop button in the middle.

0:52:37 > 0:52:41Everything's just been thought of and made it simple.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45Thomas's room.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48- Oh, my God.- Wow!

0:52:48 > 0:52:50I can't wait to show it to him tomorrow.

0:52:50 > 0:52:51I can't wait, I really can't.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55He's going to absolutely love this room.

0:52:57 > 0:52:59I can't remember the last time I got to this floor.

0:52:59 > 0:53:03- Probably the morning you walked out to work, I should imagine.- Yeah.

0:53:03 > 0:53:06- It's a long time, isn't it?- Yeah. Too long.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13- It's amazing.- Do you know, it is all right to be emotional.

0:53:13 > 0:53:16I know you've been really, really strong for a really, really long time.

0:53:16 > 0:53:21I think when I first got injured and I first went to hospital and Marissa

0:53:21 > 0:53:25was with me, there were emotional times there, but then from...

0:53:27 > 0:53:32..week whatever it was when Marissa had to become a full-time mum at home,

0:53:32 > 0:53:33so she was strong,

0:53:33 > 0:53:37and I was at hospital having to be strong getting rehabilitated,

0:53:37 > 0:53:39trying to get better.

0:53:40 > 0:53:44The emotional part maybe got missed.

0:53:44 > 0:53:47I don't think it's not there, I think you've just set it aside.

0:53:47 > 0:53:48You live in a bubble.

0:53:50 > 0:53:53And coming back and seeing the house and how it is...

0:53:56 > 0:53:57It's amazing.

0:54:01 > 0:54:03Aw...

0:54:03 > 0:54:05Kids' bath night is really important.

0:54:05 > 0:54:07- Are you happy?- Yes, it looks lovely.

0:54:07 > 0:54:09I'm right there. I'm right there.

0:54:12 > 0:54:14Oh, wow.

0:54:14 > 0:54:18- Wow, it's beautiful. - Oh, my God. I'm lost for words.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21- It's really elegant. - It looks gorgeous.

0:54:21 > 0:54:25I can't wait to spend the night here.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27Are you happy with what we've done?

0:54:27 > 0:54:28Yeah.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31It's... It's so, so good.

0:54:31 > 0:54:33I just can't wait

0:54:33 > 0:54:36to be living here again.

0:54:43 > 0:54:45Surprise!

0:54:47 > 0:54:49Who made me that "welcome home Daddy"?

0:54:49 > 0:54:51- Me.- I love it.

0:54:51 > 0:54:52Where am I going to sit?

0:54:52 > 0:54:54You're going to sit here and I'm going to sit here.

0:54:54 > 0:54:56Tom can sit there and Mummy can sit there.

0:54:56 > 0:54:58Shall we go and see your bedroom?

0:54:58 > 0:55:01- Woo!- It is like a spaceship, isn't it?

0:55:03 > 0:55:04Yes!

0:55:04 > 0:55:06Is this your bed?

0:55:08 > 0:55:09Oh, she's even got a little doll!

0:55:15 > 0:55:17Go on, Aoife.

0:55:17 > 0:55:19You've got a rocket light.

0:55:19 > 0:55:20Thomas, look.

0:55:22 > 0:55:23I think generally a success, don't you?

0:55:23 > 0:55:26- I think so.- Yeah.- They seem happy.

0:55:26 > 0:55:28That's a cafe.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33Dad, what would you like?

0:55:33 > 0:55:35- Could I have a cup of tea, please? - OK.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38They are going to love it.

0:55:38 > 0:55:39Daddy!

0:55:39 > 0:55:43I'm going to leave you to enjoy this. Are you ready to meet some of the people?

0:55:43 > 0:55:45- I can't wait. - I'll go and assemble them.

0:55:45 > 0:55:47You spend a little time here with your family.

0:55:54 > 0:55:55Look at all these people.

0:55:55 > 0:55:58APPLAUSE

0:56:02 > 0:56:04Oh, my God. It's like a mini-football match.

0:56:09 > 0:56:11So, these are some of the people... LAUGHTER

0:56:11 > 0:56:15..who have actually been building your house for the last nine days.

0:56:15 > 0:56:17Oh, wow.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19Guys, from the moment I got picked up from my hospital,

0:56:19 > 0:56:22it started off as a special day.

0:56:22 > 0:56:24That special day just got made even better,

0:56:24 > 0:56:27the moment that I went through my front door.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29What do you guys have done in this house...

0:56:32 > 0:56:35..has made me able to come home to my family.

0:56:37 > 0:56:39I've seen rooms that I haven't seen for seven months

0:56:39 > 0:56:44and all I can say is thank you very much, you've been brilliant.

0:56:44 > 0:56:46APPLAUSE

0:57:00 > 0:57:02- Thomas, what's your favourite bit?- Everything.

0:57:02 > 0:57:04Everything?

0:57:10 > 0:57:12- All right?- Thank you.

0:57:14 > 0:57:18We all leave our homes first thing in the morning assuming that we're going to come home safe,

0:57:18 > 0:57:21but, of course, for Kris, that just wasn't the case.

0:57:21 > 0:57:24Seven months of rehabilitation since the incident and he was ready to

0:57:24 > 0:57:27come home, but his house couldn't accept him.
