0:00:06 > 0:00:09DIY SOS Big Build, City of Edinburgh, and a question -

0:00:09 > 0:00:13how do you fit 9,500 man-hours, 300 builders

0:00:13 > 0:00:16and a giant renovation of a community project

0:00:16 > 0:00:18into just one hour?

0:00:18 > 0:00:20We're about to show you.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23We're here for Children In Need,

0:00:23 > 0:00:26to help with a centre for young people with special needs.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33But this centre is more than just a building.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It's a home.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39There's no other way to describe it. It is a home.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43- What sort of things happen at The Yard?- Happy!

0:00:43 > 0:00:47It makes you feel happy, does it? Is it your favourite place?

0:00:47 > 0:00:51- Do you think?- Yeah, I think so. - Yeah.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54'It's a massive project.'

0:00:54 > 0:00:57It's like standing in the middle of a human ant hill.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59It is like an ant hill.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01'But the commitment is exceptional.'

0:01:01 > 0:01:02It's for the kids, you know.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05If you cannae help them, there's something wrong.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Later in the programme,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10we'll tell you how you can help Children In Need.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14As usual, the team and I are here,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17but once again we'll need an army of builders to make this happen.

0:01:17 > 0:01:22Look at this. A builders' yard. This is DIY SOS The Big Build!

0:01:22 > 0:01:24THEY CHEER

0:01:30 > 0:01:35- What things have you got in your shop?- We've got all this.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39'This is six-year-old Jamie Pass and his little sister, Erin.'

0:01:39 > 0:01:43- Is that the Swiss...what's it called, Swiss...?- Swiss roll.- Is it?

0:01:43 > 0:01:45'Jamie has special needs.'

0:01:45 > 0:01:47- We're playing baker shops. - I can see that.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49'It's hard for Mum, Gillian, to deal with.'

0:01:49 > 0:01:51We need to go back.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54'We were really shut off by Jamie's disability,'

0:01:54 > 0:01:57because in a lot of ways people look at him and say,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00"He's a normal child, it's just you're not controlling him."

0:02:00 > 0:02:04'Jamie was diagnosed with autism just before his fourth birthday.'

0:02:04 > 0:02:09Getting this diagnosis was a great relief, but we had about a month

0:02:09 > 0:02:13where we had practically every service coming in, and then

0:02:13 > 0:02:17everything died down again, and you were left again to fend for yourself.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20- Me don't think Daddy no like.- You don't think Daddy would like that.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25He was at the stage where he was in a nursery biting, hitting, kicking

0:02:25 > 0:02:31and I would come in every day and be given litany of his bad behaviour.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37And during that time somebody said to me, "Have you gone to The Yard?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39"Have you seen The Yard?"

0:02:39 > 0:02:42- 'So, what is The Yard?'- Hello!

0:02:42 > 0:02:45The Yard is a drop-in centre in the heart of Edinburgh

0:02:45 > 0:02:47for children with special needs.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49For mums like Gillian...

0:02:49 > 0:02:51- Stop.- Go!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54..it's a lifeline.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I was literally ready to phone The Samaritans.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01We had no friends, that would come and have a play date

0:03:01 > 0:03:03because Jamie was quite abusive.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08His little sister was months old and really as she got older

0:03:08 > 0:03:11he was quite abusive to her too.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16But I came to The Yard and I walked through the door

0:03:16 > 0:03:18and I felt I was home.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27Gillian's son, Jamie, loves coming here.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30He has a great creative freedom in the art room.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32He's painted his own stop and go sign.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37And he adores roadworks, he polices now the go-karts that go round

0:03:37 > 0:03:40The Yard when they have to stop and go.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45I love it because there's lots of things and it has cones.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- There's lots of things and there's road cones!- Yes!- And your sign.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Show them the stop.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Stop, go.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56The Yard helps 1,500 children and their families,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00children aged 3 to 25 are welcome.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03They have a whole range of additional needs.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Lauren Shaw was born with Down's Syndrome.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I play go-karts.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Go-karts, yes.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19- Bikes, on the swing, the big swing. - And the art room.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21- Art room.- Yeah.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24- Be careful.- I will!

0:04:24 > 0:04:28Lauren's mum, Monica, told me that she wants just one thing for her.

0:04:28 > 0:04:34I want her to be happy and content. And to have friends.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37And to have a life, to have a good routine,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39a nice home and to be happy.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44And do you see those things blossoming in Lauren at The Yard?

0:04:44 > 0:04:45Yes. Absolutely.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49I've been doing baking.

0:04:49 > 0:04:55- And you do it all yourself, don't you?- All by myself.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58The skills that she's learning there,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01because she's with children who don't look at her differently,

0:05:01 > 0:05:04they don't notice, they're just playing with her, mates.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07They're just hanging out, and so's Lauren, you know?

0:05:07 > 0:05:09So Lauren's not being mollycoddled,

0:05:09 > 0:05:11or treated differently at all.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14You know, she's in the thick of the game.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18And that is so important for her growing up, to learn these skills.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21Celine Sinclair leads the team,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24helping families like Gillian's and Monica's.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29We can provide love and care and support for our children,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31but we can't make friends for them.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35And, you know, at The Yard, that is something we can do.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38We have the space and the support to actually end some of that

0:05:38 > 0:05:42social isolation that children with additional support needs face.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Because nobody wants their children to be lonely.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49They use what they have, but it's falling apart.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53The tiny kitchen the kids love cooking in,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57an ageing art room and a tattered and dated sensory room.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Outside, the children love the network of cycle ways.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09There's a great big swing, and as many adventures as staff can create.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14The keyword here is imagination.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17But imagination can only take you so far.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23At The Yard we have to raise a lot of money every year

0:06:23 > 0:06:27and without BBC Children In Need we would simply not be operating.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34We might be really strong as an organisation in terms of what

0:06:34 > 0:06:38we deliver, but we are housed in a completely dilapidated,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40falling-apart building.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44We have to meet regulations.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47We work with children with very complex needs.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Next, we are going to have to replace our kitchen.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52We wouldn't be allowed to operate

0:06:52 > 0:06:56with the kind of kitchen that we have just now.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58We face the problem in the future of having to replace

0:06:58 > 0:07:02a very, very antiquated heating system.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07And outside, we did have a climbing structure until last year,

0:07:07 > 0:07:09but that's completely rotten.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Make no mistake, The Yard is a cherished and loved service,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17but a decrepit building

0:07:17 > 0:07:22and soaring running costs threaten to leave them without a home.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Without this service, there are an awful lot of children

0:07:25 > 0:07:28and families within the city of Edinburgh

0:07:28 > 0:07:31who wouldn't receive the respite that we offer them,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34and who wouldn't have a safe space to play in.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41There's families that have got nowhere else

0:07:41 > 0:07:42to take their children.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44I mean, nowhere else.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47It would be taking away from these children's futures,

0:07:47 > 0:07:53these children's lives would be altered because of it.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57So, what would make it better for the children?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Somewhere safe that he can climb and explore.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05- He'd love to climb trees and things like that.- Yes! Of course!- Of course.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09I'd like a slide and a violin.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Slide and you'd like a violin.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15First I've heard.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Children with special needs are hard on things.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24They will whack something, they will bang it.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Things just become more dilapidated.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30And we're thankful for what we've got,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32but if it could be better for our kids,

0:08:32 > 0:08:35we would be very thankful for that too.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39'So, it's out with over 1,000 children and in...

0:08:41 > 0:08:46'..with the team and hundreds of builders. Look at them!

0:08:50 > 0:08:53'As usual, we've got just nine days to finish the build.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01'Mind you, we'll be getting some amazing kit for them.'

0:09:01 > 0:09:04- We're having proper traffic lights. - Proper traffic lights.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07- Wow, with buttons that kids can cross?- Everything. Yes.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11'And, of course, all this outside work

0:09:11 > 0:09:14'will be much easier in sunshine. Sunshine in Scotland, ha!'

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- Weather going to be all right for you, hey?- Doesn't bother me.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20- Doesn't bother you at all?- Scottish.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21See, a different kind of bloke up here.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25'There is so much to change that we've put

0:09:25 > 0:09:28'Julian in charge of all the works outside.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30'See if you can guess why.'

0:09:30 > 0:09:32And all your diggers.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35I mean, there's loads of groundwork going on.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Pretty to watch, isn't it?

0:09:37 > 0:09:39All that movement, some swinging that way, some swinging that way,

0:09:39 > 0:09:41dumpers mingling around.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44Love that, love a bit of groundworks, me.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49It's like, sort of, engineering ballet.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51That's exactly what it is, isn't it?

0:09:52 > 0:09:54There's a man in his element.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02'Inside, Billy's already made himself right at home.'

0:10:02 > 0:10:05# Billy is his name It sets me aflame

0:10:05 > 0:10:07# And so it's a shame, you see... #

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Hi, I'm Billy. Nice to meet you.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13How are you finding working with Billy at the moment?

0:10:13 > 0:10:15- Is it all right?- Quite fun.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18- Special, isn't it? - He never stops laughing.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Telling funny jokes, singing along. - Telling funny jokes?

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Telling jokes. Funny jokes, that's a different thing altogether, really.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27- I've moved it up there, now. - Up that way.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30'But we're not mad,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32'it's Chris who's been given the task

0:10:32 > 0:10:34'of running the work inside.'

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- There's nearly a new format for DIY SOS here.- What you mean?

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Well, I do the inside, Jules does the outside.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42- I do the little bits of chat in between.- You do the link.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Billy obviously still on the electrics.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Well, unfortunately, we've inherited him, inside and out.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52- It's kind of leaves one person, then, who's...- Flying in the wind.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56Redundant, a little bit, really, you know what I mean?

0:10:56 > 0:10:59'That's a good point, actually. Where is Mark?

0:10:59 > 0:11:01'Ah, there he is.'

0:11:01 > 0:11:05I'm really busy, actually, I'm tweeting for some cakes.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07'Actually, that's quite important, yes.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11'Someone needs to keep their eye on the bigger picture.'

0:11:11 > 0:11:15# What's new, pussy cat? Whoa, whoa, whoa. #

0:11:15 > 0:11:17'This bigger picture is the brainchild

0:11:17 > 0:11:20'of our resident designer, Gabrielle Blackman.'

0:11:20 > 0:11:24This centre is a complete lifeline for families that use it.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27It's really emotional for them, this place,

0:11:27 > 0:11:32and we've got to make a space for them to be able to socialise

0:11:32 > 0:11:34with each other and look after each other more.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37'And we should all look after each other more, so here's Gabby's plan.'

0:11:37 > 0:11:40The sensory room will be rebuilt and renewed.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44New flooring, heating and insulation will make the place cosy

0:11:44 > 0:11:46and cheaper to run.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48There'll be a new storage room

0:11:48 > 0:11:51and a wall to provide a little privacy for the loos.

0:11:51 > 0:11:56Families will love the dedicated play space for the under fives.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Their old room becomes the office, while the art room gets a refit.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02By removing this wall, the kitchen becomes huge,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05with a new door to a grown-up cafe area.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11What about out here? How are we going to change this?

0:12:11 > 0:12:12Because they already love this area.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16They love it, but there's loads of things that were not working

0:12:16 > 0:12:20and we've just got to really take a fresh look at it, really.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23So we've broken it down into sections

0:12:23 > 0:12:26and the community here are incredible.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28And we've got parents and amazing friends in here

0:12:28 > 0:12:33just taking it section by section to make each bit really enjoyable.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38So, we're completely renovating the wheelchair swing,

0:12:38 > 0:12:40we're re-tarmacing the cycleways,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43adding traffic lights, which Jamie will love, of course,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46and a dome to provide shelter in inclement weather.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50There's a new roundabout, water features, a sandpit, there's...

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Well, there's masses going on, too much to list!

0:12:52 > 0:12:54You'll see it as it happens.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56- Is it going to be beautiful then? - It is going to be beautiful.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58- But is it going to be beautiful? - It is.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Will they like it more than they like it now?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- No, they are going to like it more. - Promise?- I do promise.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- Pinky promise?- Pinky promise. It's going to be fab.- High-five.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11- Low five.- No, not this bit! - High one.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18'The children love cooking, we've mention that,

0:13:18 > 0:13:21'and the old kitchen was tiny and wheelchair users couldn't join in.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24'This new kitchen will have something very special for them -

0:13:24 > 0:13:27'moving units.'

0:13:28 > 0:13:30A wheelchair user wants access to the wall units,

0:13:30 > 0:13:32They'll press a button and wall units will come down

0:13:32 > 0:13:35to meet the wheelchair, and stop at wheelchair height.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- So it's all quite specialised. - That's fantastic.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40I might get one myself.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44So that anyone of normal height that comes in to your kitchen...

0:13:44 > 0:13:45Say you came round to cook dinner...

0:13:45 > 0:13:47But if you're going to use it, you just press...

0:13:47 > 0:13:49It will all come down to my height.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- Nice.- Isn't it?- Like that. That could work, couldn't it?

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Yes, definitely. I don't think it goes that low, does it?

0:13:57 > 0:14:00'You've got to love it when the trades join in too.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03'And that's not always doing, here. Go on, Chris!'

0:14:03 > 0:14:04What's going on with this window?

0:14:04 > 0:14:08I'll give you, very generously, two guesses.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12What's it saying to you? I am now a...

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Hippopotamus.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18- No, door.- Door.- It's a door.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20French windows?

0:14:20 > 0:14:24- Possibly, not sure.- A big opening, basically. What you can walk out of.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28- Instead of just looking out of. - Wheelchair access.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Well done, gentlemen.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32'It's all happening so quick.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35'This is a unique build in so many ways.

0:14:35 > 0:14:39'I don't think I've ever seen undercoat applied on day one.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42'Hold on, that is undercoat, isn't it? Oh, it's not undercoat?'

0:14:42 > 0:14:45I know that designers these days, and I have on several

0:14:45 > 0:14:48occasions made the point that designers are obsessed with grey.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50Are we going to have the grey rant?

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Yes, you are going to have the grey rant.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55We do houses, and everyone's going on about how grey is in,

0:14:55 > 0:14:59and every designer does grey and 14 shades of grey, and now we have a chance with kids,

0:14:59 > 0:15:04where you want bright colours, and we paint it battleship grey again.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06Trust me, it is going to look...

0:15:06 > 0:15:08The whole point is that the windows disappear and the trees

0:15:08 > 0:15:11are what you see - the green and the beautiful outdoors.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13- That's the point.- Why don't you paint them green, then?

0:15:13 > 0:15:16Because you don't want a fake green next to the real green of nature.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18That would look rubbish.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23'Would it, though? Am I being picky? Am I hard to please?

0:15:23 > 0:15:24'Speaking of hard to please,

0:15:24 > 0:15:29'here comes the man from the accident prevention people, RoSPA.'

0:15:29 > 0:15:31So, are you here to tell us that we can't do that

0:15:31 > 0:15:33cos it's too dangerous or are you here to tell us,

0:15:33 > 0:15:36"If you're going to do that, it'd be better if you did this?"

0:15:36 > 0:15:39- How does it work?- Yeah, it's about what is it you want to achieve

0:15:39 > 0:15:43and how can we help you to come up with a sensible solution?

0:15:43 > 0:15:46So, instead of banning an activity like climbing

0:15:46 > 0:15:47because you might fall off,

0:15:47 > 0:15:50rather, just make sure that what you are climbing is suitable,

0:15:50 > 0:15:54the thing is a suitable size for children to get their hands on them.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57So, how's it looking? Cos we got lots of different things going on.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01It's fantastic. Yeah. I've never seen so many hi-vis jackets in one place.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Yeah.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06'Well, that's nice, isn't it? Nice to get something right.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09'But that grey is still going on. I need a break.'

0:16:09 > 0:16:10Fancy a cup of tea?

0:16:10 > 0:16:13- Yeah, that would be nice. - What tea do you want?

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Earl Grey would be lovely, actually.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21'In such tough times the generosity of everyone here is...

0:16:21 > 0:16:23'Well, do you know, it's incredible.'

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- Brilliant. How long are you giving us?- Three boys for ten days.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29- Three boys for ten days?- Yeah.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31- And you're paying them?- Yeah.

0:16:31 > 0:16:35- But you're not going to get paid? - Yeah.- Mate, thank you very much.

0:16:35 > 0:16:40Every single one of these people has their own reason to be here.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43One of the colleagues that I work with, his younger son came here,

0:16:43 > 0:16:44he's got learning difficulties.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48He is now turning 23. We only started discussing this about a week ago.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50We told him we are getting involved when we heard about it

0:16:50 > 0:16:55and it was good to be part of something for somebody you know and you're helping them out.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Everyone loves the big swing.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59It is being completely renovated by two tradesmen

0:16:59 > 0:17:03who both have children here. Dave's daughter is Hannah.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07It's kind of awe-inspiring, really, isn't it?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10That these guys all give up all their time to come in here

0:17:10 > 0:17:12and do this for us, really. Us and our families.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16You know, it's...very generous. Very.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Tony has got a daughter, Sissy, who is a regular here. There she is.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23When I got a schedule emailed through with who was coming,

0:17:23 > 0:17:26I was totally, totally amazed at the amount of people

0:17:26 > 0:17:30who are giving up their free time to come and do this.

0:17:30 > 0:17:31How will your Sissy react?

0:17:31 > 0:17:37How will she react? She will love the place. She'll jump up and down.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39She'll flap her hands like she normally does.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41She'll be totally excited.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45Tony's invited me to pop round and see the family.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Wife Dawn, Sidney and Sissy.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Sissy has Asperger's.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Right, Sissy, can you pretend that they're not there?

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Are you going to do the game with us?

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Time at home can be very challenging for everyone.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01Does she need to do the game with us?

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Hello.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06Oh, what are we playing?

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Sissy, what is your game?

0:18:08 > 0:18:10'When I turn up...'

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- Can you show me how it works, Sissy? - No, I need your finger.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16'..she doesn't want to talk. Which is fine.'

0:18:16 > 0:18:18Not particularly in the mood today.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24'Having Asperger's can make her inflexible at home.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26'This is not all the family have to deal with.'

0:18:27 > 0:18:30When Sissy's having a good day, she can have a chat with you

0:18:30 > 0:18:35- and she can just be OK. - Have a conversation, yeah.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39But her moods can change in a minute.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42She will kick walls, she'll cry, she'll wail

0:18:42 > 0:18:45and the whole house will just descend into chaos.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48'Beyond the immediate family,

0:18:48 > 0:18:52'it's so hard for anyone to really understand. Why would they?'

0:18:53 > 0:18:58You need people who are in your situation. You really, really do.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02And that's where The Yard comes in.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06Dawn and her fellow mums rely on it for friendship and support.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11Why is it so important that this place survive the cuts

0:19:11 > 0:19:13and the difficulties and the financial difficulties?

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Well, there's nothing like it. We've tried everywhere.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21It's a place where you can be with your friends and share

0:19:21 > 0:19:27and talk openly and completely honestly about your life

0:19:27 > 0:19:29and your experiences bringing up your child.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32There is nowhere else like it.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36It tends to be that you join something that is

0:19:36 > 0:19:39for your child or you go to somewhere that's for you.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Here it is for the whole family. It's for everybody.

0:19:42 > 0:19:47So we all come together. This place supports all of us as a family.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53How important is the respite aspect of this

0:19:53 > 0:19:56where you can get five minutes' break?

0:19:56 > 0:19:58Yeah, and they can get five minutes' break from us.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00- Exactly, uh-huh. - You think it works both ways?

0:20:00 > 0:20:03It's very important for them. Oh, aye.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06'But nothing in their lives is simple.'

0:20:06 > 0:20:09We want them to have the same kind of play experiences

0:20:09 > 0:20:13other children get to have. But they can't have it in the park next door.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16They can't have it in places like soft play and things like that

0:20:16 > 0:20:18because there's always eyes on them.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20People are always apprehensive or anxious

0:20:20 > 0:20:22about the way they are going to behave.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Here they can have the same play experience as everybody else.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30And when the children are happy, the mums are getting a break too.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36Even we get respite in other forms.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39There's respite, they came and said, "You have to leave the house."

0:20:39 > 0:20:43And I said, "I actually just want five minutes in the house by myself to clean the bathroom."

0:20:43 > 0:20:46And I was able to send Jamie here with the respite worker

0:20:46 > 0:20:48and I got to clean the bathroom.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54These mums live in a world where even the most menial tasks

0:20:54 > 0:20:56are a welcome break.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Which is why we need to sort out this building and its grounds

0:21:03 > 0:21:07to make sure The Yard is still here in another 20 years.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11It's officially the end of the day, but we can't get people to go home

0:21:11 > 0:21:14cos they're so excited about how much has happened in this room.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16If you look, the sanctuary room has been taken apart

0:21:16 > 0:21:17and a new one built in its place -

0:21:17 > 0:21:20much bigger, much brighter and much more impressive.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23The art room has been taken apart and a new one is ready to go in.

0:21:23 > 0:21:28In this room, we have taken out a wall and we have made a space

0:21:28 > 0:21:30ready for patio doors over in the corner and put a steel in.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33We've built a new room in the corner here

0:21:33 > 0:21:35which is going to be like a utility room.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37If you look over that side, believe it or not,

0:21:37 > 0:21:39that's already been painted.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41There's huge things happened out in the garden here.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44If you look here there is 60 tonnes of spoil has been taken away.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47That is 40 tonnes waiting to go. And where has it come from?

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Well, it's come from this area.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52The sandpit has been completely cleared out

0:21:52 > 0:21:55and an area in the corner for a climbing frame has been made.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Up here, a new pathway has been made around the top

0:21:58 > 0:22:00and a base for, like, a giant Wendy house

0:22:00 > 0:22:01has been built over there.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04And, of course, the swing that everybody loves so much

0:22:04 > 0:22:05is being revamped in the corner.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07How did we do so much in just one day?

0:22:07 > 0:22:11Cos 90 people turned up to help, that's how. Pretty impressive, eh?

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Morning.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19A bright new day, but Jules has already managed

0:22:19 > 0:22:21to lose that spring in his step.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Yeah, I'm beginning to get stressed out and I don't want to

0:22:23 > 0:22:26cos that's one thing I told myself I wasn't going to do

0:22:26 > 0:22:28was get stressed out.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Face rubbing is generally the sign. I'm generally, you know...

0:22:34 > 0:22:36It's the start of my stress point.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40I don't like being stressed out.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Oh, dear. This won't help Jules either.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45We have just dug up a cable.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51The funny thing about a hole - when you've got one

0:22:51 > 0:22:55it's amazing how many men will gather round to look into it.

0:22:55 > 0:22:56Trust me. Try doing this -

0:22:56 > 0:22:59dig a hole somewhere and stand there looking into it.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03You'll suddenly have about four or five other blokes looking into it as well.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Don't go near that with a spade until somebody who knows

0:23:05 > 0:23:08what they're talking about tells you it's safe.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10- I though he knew what he was talking about.- Him?

0:23:10 > 0:23:13I'm surprised they come in there and asked me to sort it out.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16I thought, "Whoa, hold it." James! Oh, here he is.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19So, I dinnae believe anything he tells me, no?

0:23:19 > 0:23:21- Nothing at all he tells you. - Here, get in there.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25We still go and lay flowers on the grave of the last person

0:23:25 > 0:23:27who believed what he said.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34It's a bit damp round here, but a new Wendy house or log house

0:23:34 > 0:23:38or house made of logs is flying up. Is it a shop? Is it a shelter?

0:23:38 > 0:23:41Maybe a puppet show. It's up to the children, really.

0:23:41 > 0:23:42Thank you.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44A climbing designer and the kids love climbing too,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47but our plans for a fort are in trouble.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49No matter how many diagrams we pore over,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52we can't work out how to make a tunnel through the fort.

0:23:52 > 0:23:53Luckily...

0:23:55 > 0:23:59..we've unleashed 100% pure Scottish inspiration.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01He's even called Jock.

0:24:02 > 0:24:07Jock is my new best friend and I'm actually going to get him

0:24:07 > 0:24:10a lovely scarf because he's been doing so much designing today,

0:24:10 > 0:24:14but you need to have a big scarf to be a designer.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16We've been falling over this the whole time and Jock said,

0:24:16 > 0:24:20"Well, why don't we use that for the tunnel?" We had the guys

0:24:20 > 0:24:24look at the metal and it's all good so the kids will absolutely love it.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Any other brilliant ideas just come and secretly tell them

0:24:27 > 0:24:30and I'll pretend that they are mine. OK? Is that all right?

0:24:30 > 0:24:32He's a very happy chap as well, isn't he?

0:24:32 > 0:24:35This building costs £1,000 a day to run

0:24:35 > 0:24:37and it's still freezing in winter.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Improving heating and insulation will cut costs and make it cosier.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44Just look at these wonderful people.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47Even the bosses are getting stuck in. How do you spot them?

0:24:47 > 0:24:49Look at their hands.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51They are almost as soft as mine.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55- How many years since you've been on tools then?- A long time.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Probably about 17 years. 17 years in an office.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02You know, a special project like this

0:25:02 > 0:25:04really does bring out the best in people.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Something very beautiful's just happened.

0:25:09 > 0:25:10Tell us what it is then.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14We needed 20 tonnes of rock to create a retaining wall.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18We had no idea where to get it from. We had no money, we had no nothing.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20I got a phone call from a man called Kevin.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Kevin, where are you, who are you?

0:25:22 > 0:25:25You've just sent me 20 tonne of beautiful, beautiful rock.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27It's not the rock that's beautiful - it's you, mate.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29Thank you very much.

0:25:29 > 0:25:30Quite right too.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32You know, the help comes in all shapes and sizes.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Where should you be today?

0:25:36 > 0:25:39- Holiday. - That's dedication, isn't it?

0:25:39 > 0:25:43- That's dedication. What can I say? - Not a problem.

0:25:43 > 0:25:44See, that's the sort of thing.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47You don't know these people and they're all here for one cause.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49It's brilliant. It's so nice.

0:25:49 > 0:25:54Everywhere I look there are people going the extra mile.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57- Shouldn't you be at home at the moment?- I should be. Yes.- Because?

0:25:57 > 0:26:01- My wife's just gave birth.- When? - Yesterday, 12:43. A wee baby girl.

0:26:03 > 0:26:08And here she is. Our youngest-ever visitor to DIY SOS.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11Look at you and your little face. Look. All excited.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14Do you know what? She should be very proud of her dad.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19All these people are doing their bit because they know and you have seen

0:26:19 > 0:26:24how much this place means to the parents and children that use it.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28It's a place supported by Children In Need and you too can help.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39There are still thousands of children across the UK

0:26:39 > 0:26:42who have nowhere to go for their basic needs.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44To help support projects like this,

0:26:44 > 0:26:50please text the word DIYSOS to 70705.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54Text messages will cost £5 plus your standard network charge

0:26:54 > 0:26:57and £5 will go to Children In Need.

0:26:57 > 0:27:02For full terms and conditions visit bbc.co.uk/pudsey.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04Thank you.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Your money really will make a difference

0:27:06 > 0:27:10and I know times are tough but, if you can, give a little bit now.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12ALL: Thank you.

0:27:12 > 0:27:13ALL: Thank you.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15ALL: Thank you.

0:27:16 > 0:27:21When it comes down to it, every build needs just four things -

0:27:21 > 0:27:27labour, equipment, materials and fuel.

0:27:27 > 0:27:28All right, cake.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30A little bit of Scottish fudge.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Swing renovator Dave's wife, Jane, brought us the cake.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38That's brilliant. Thank you very much.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41- Can we borrow him for a little bit longer?- Definitely.- Excited?

0:27:41 > 0:27:46Very excited. Can't wait. Can't wait. We spend most of our life here so...

0:27:46 > 0:27:48- Do you really?- Yeah, yeah.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51There's nowhere else we can go with our disabled children

0:27:51 > 0:27:53to hang out so it's fantastic. We love it.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55And be accepted as well, you know.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Because there is a lot of prejudice just now going about,

0:27:58 > 0:28:00but in here there is nothing like that.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02So what do you need in this place that you haven't got?

0:28:02 > 0:28:08That kitchen was small, dirty, old. The kids are in there a lot.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10Baking's a big thing on a Friday afternoon so, yeah,

0:28:10 > 0:28:14it'd be fantastic if you could do something with the kitchen. Please.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18If only she knew what's going on in that kitchen already.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21It's going to be everything they need. But why is a kitchen so important?

0:28:21 > 0:28:23Hello, Lauren.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26'I'm hoping Lauren and Monica will be able to enlighten me.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29'After she's finished wearing me out.'

0:28:29 > 0:28:33- It's difficult when she keeps slapping me. Ah, no.- Ha-ha.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36You're very good at this, aren't you?

0:28:36 > 0:28:40So, it's nice to be here on the trampoline at home.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42It's good to play games at home,

0:28:42 > 0:28:45but do you look forward to going and seeing your friends at The Yard?

0:28:45 > 0:28:47Yeah, I do.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Who is your best friend, do you think?

0:28:49 > 0:28:54Sissy and Sidney...and Amy.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56What sort of things happen at The Yard?

0:28:56 > 0:29:00- We bake cakes.- Cakes?- Yes. - Do you really?- Yeah.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04Is it your favourite place? You think?

0:29:04 > 0:29:07- Yeah. I think so.- Yeah.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10You know, we all know why the kitchen has an important place.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12It's obvious, really.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Everybody uses the kitchen.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17It's the hub of the home, isn't it?

0:29:17 > 0:29:19- And it's a place that we all... - Can I ask you?

0:29:19 > 0:29:21You used the expression, "It's the hub of the home."

0:29:21 > 0:29:23- Is it a home? - Yes, it is.- Like a house?

0:29:23 > 0:29:28- Like somewhere where a family lives? - Yeah. That's exactly what it is.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31And that's what it is to our children as well.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34On the big build, we are normally working for one family,

0:29:34 > 0:29:37trying to make their house into more of a home that works for them

0:29:37 > 0:29:40and we thought we were coming to do something very different here,

0:29:40 > 0:29:44a community space, but it has become very apparent

0:29:44 > 0:29:48that this is, in a very real sense, a home for the people that use it.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53It's a family. A very big family, but a family nonetheless.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06And that's why it's so important this home is cosy and warm,

0:30:06 > 0:30:09the kitchen is big enough for the whole family

0:30:09 > 0:30:11and the garden has plenty of places to play and explore.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15Saturday morning. Fantastic.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17I thought it would maybe quieten down a wee bit,

0:30:17 > 0:30:19but it's actually getting busier. It's incredible.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22There's more people, there's more painters, more electricians,

0:30:22 > 0:30:24more ground workers.

0:30:25 > 0:30:29I thought people were supposed to take it easy at the weekend, but no!

0:30:29 > 0:30:31- How many of you have turned up? - About 40 of us.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34So there's four more painters on top of what we had already.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36That's what I'm saying - there's just more and more people

0:30:36 > 0:30:39turning up on the job. Fantastic. Thank you, gentlemen.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- No problem.- And that means the pressure is on Chris.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46He is being chased by a whole team of kitchen fitters.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50I'm not worried about them. There's only nine of them.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56No, no, no. They're cool. They're making up bits and bobs over there

0:30:56 > 0:30:58so we'll get this flattened in

0:30:58 > 0:31:02and then we can just push it against the wall and they can carry on so...

0:31:02 > 0:31:05I did say 10 o'clock so we'll be all right.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07Yeah, we'll be all right.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10Is he convincing himself or us?

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Outside, we must be winning.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16We're almost halfway through and Jules has stopped rubbing his face.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20The guys have really pulled it out the bag -

0:31:20 > 0:31:22they've got stuck into it and cracked it out.

0:31:22 > 0:31:26And I've been stress-free for the last couple of days

0:31:26 > 0:31:31because you can sort of see the light at the end of the tunnel.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33- Up!- Whoa.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35But your bunch are pretty much unstoppable, aren't they?

0:31:35 > 0:31:38They came with an open mind, they're flexible,

0:31:38 > 0:31:41they like a fresh challenge and what's been great is they have

0:31:41 > 0:31:44got gelled in with everybody else, so it's been fantastic. Really good.

0:31:44 > 0:31:47I don't think Jock will have ever been described

0:31:47 > 0:31:49as flexible before, when you look at the shape of the man.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52Definitely, yeah, that's right.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55Flexible or not, he has impressed Gabby with his design.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58When you leave for art college, you get given a lovely scarf

0:31:58 > 0:32:00and you can't ever take it off. It's a designer thing.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04Tell me it's pink. Tell me you've got him a pink scarf.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07- Ooh.- I've gone chunky on the knitwear,

0:32:07 > 0:32:10it's chunky knit but there is a little bit of pink in it.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14But only a small bit. There's some blue for his eyes.

0:32:14 > 0:32:18- Wear it with pride. - Red, surely. Red for his eyes.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23From a man mountain to the smallest man on site, but which one is it?

0:32:24 > 0:32:27I'm trying to work out who the tall one is.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30- Well, it's certainly not you. - I'll tell you what, you can talk.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33Get the line here, let's have wee look then.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35The only way to do it really is...

0:32:36 > 0:32:39Have you got a level? Oh, hold on.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Hold on!

0:32:41 > 0:32:42Aye.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44There you go, officially the smallest man on site

0:32:44 > 0:32:47and available for pantomime if you're doing Snow White and the...

0:32:47 > 0:32:50OK, let's leave it. While we're doing this, the families

0:32:50 > 0:32:53and staff of the yard have had to move to temporary accommodation

0:32:53 > 0:32:57in a nearby school, so we've made time to go and visit.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00Blimey, you're a lot better than me.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04- Ah!- Nutmeg!

0:33:04 > 0:33:07The sense of togetherness here, of family,

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- is quickly apparent to us all. - MAN LAUGHS

0:33:10 > 0:33:13The yard takes a total hammering every day.

0:33:13 > 0:33:17A wooden piano and an organ. Two.

0:33:17 > 0:33:21It's here that Sissy finally talks to me.

0:33:21 > 0:33:27- What's your favourite part of the yard?- The climbing structure.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31Oh, is it? The climbing structures? All right, cool.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34This is where I can see for myself

0:33:34 > 0:33:37some of the problems these families have to deal with.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40Gillian, for example, has to watch out for Erin's safety,

0:33:40 > 0:33:42even when she's playing with her brother.

0:33:44 > 0:33:50She gets flung around. See? Your go now, Erin.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53- There is a degree of physicality involved.- Uh-uh.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57And just no sense of anybody else's speech or words. So it is. 6.2.

0:33:57 > 0:34:00- So I'm still in the lead? - Yes, you're still in the lead.

0:34:00 > 0:34:04- Yes, totally. Unfortunately Erin gets a lot of it.- Yes.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06So she does.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10He just isn't aware that he's going to do things.

0:34:15 > 0:34:19- And sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's not.- Yeah!

0:34:19 > 0:34:23- No, I can see that, yeah. - Erin doesn't like the doggie.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27Oh!

0:34:27 > 0:34:33- See?- Yeah.- Right.- You must be worn out at the end of the day.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36It is really exhausting. You don't get a minute.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38You cannot wash the dishes.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41You can't, there's a lot of things you can't do.

0:34:42 > 0:34:48It's gotten better, but really it is hard to have a conversation.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50It kind of is, no, I can see that.

0:34:50 > 0:34:55So that half an hour or hour at the yard where you can sit there

0:34:55 > 0:34:57and have a cup of coffee and a chat with someone.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00That's exactly it. Careful now. Careful now.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05It's so intense I can see the problems Gillian faces

0:35:05 > 0:35:09with Jamie's play dates. The yard is obviously vital for him.

0:35:09 > 0:35:14And our build will help them. Scenes like this make it crystal clear

0:35:14 > 0:35:17why they need a safe area for the under fives.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20The more we can give them, the better.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23We may be only halfway through now,

0:35:23 > 0:35:27but we're more determined than ever to get the build right.

0:35:27 > 0:35:29We've met the children and the people,

0:35:29 > 0:35:31the helpers and everything, and they're fabulous.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35- They're very special.- They all want gold medals, like Olympians.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37Honestly, the helpers, they're phenomenal.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40We've just been to meet them and they are like...

0:35:40 > 0:35:45- Special, aren't they?- Unbelievable. - You're going to cry, you.- Yeah.

0:35:45 > 0:35:49It's hard enough normal kids trying to bring them up,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52but when they need that extra special help

0:35:52 > 0:35:53it's brilliant.

0:35:58 > 0:36:02So, if you want to help projects like this...

0:36:02 > 0:36:09Please text the word DIYSOS to 70705.

0:36:09 > 0:36:16# People help the people... #

0:36:16 > 0:36:19Text messages will cost five pounds plus your standard

0:36:19 > 0:36:23network charge, and five pounds will go to Children In Need.

0:36:30 > 0:36:33And your money really does matter.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36So if you can, please text now.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38- BOTH:- Thank you.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41They weren't reading from the script at all(!)

0:36:41 > 0:36:44Next morning, across the other side of Scotland in Glasgow,

0:36:44 > 0:36:46a water feature is being crafted by guys

0:36:46 > 0:36:49who normally deal in heavy industry.

0:36:50 > 0:36:51Oh, look at this.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56- Fantastic. Nice bit of kit. - It's wonderful actually,

0:36:56 > 0:36:59you did this off that little pencil drawing from Gabriel?

0:36:59 > 0:37:02It's usually the back of a fag packet, we call it.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05- But it was a wee bit better than that.- This is marvellous.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08It's not the norm, not what we usually do.

0:37:08 > 0:37:10That's the thing, I know what you usually do,

0:37:10 > 0:37:12but tell everyone what you normally do.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15We usually build warships.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18- That's our day job.- Look. - Usually the warships are grey,

0:37:18 > 0:37:21we're sick of grey so we tried to brighten it up a bit.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24Do you know, I've had a thought. Isn't it marvellous?

0:37:24 > 0:37:27We're building this colourful centre for the kids

0:37:27 > 0:37:30and so far we've painted everything grey, and the only bit we've got

0:37:30 > 0:37:34so far that isn't grey is the bit built by the guys who make warships

0:37:34 > 0:37:36who normally paint everything that colour.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39That's fantastic, lads. That's amazing.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42'You've got to love that, haven't you?

0:37:42 > 0:37:45'The children will unleash a riot of colour in the art room.

0:37:45 > 0:37:49'They love to let their imagination run riot.'

0:37:49 > 0:37:51This is the art room,

0:37:51 > 0:37:54and this is the lovely lady who's supplied us with...

0:37:54 > 0:37:58Well, your company, has supplied us with all the kitchen units to go in this room.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01You're like a little hobbit down there!

0:38:01 > 0:38:06- You all right?- I'm good, yes. - Enjoying yourself?- Great. Great.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09Predominantly blokes on site, and you've been around doing a bit

0:38:09 > 0:38:13of this and that and sweeping, you've been here all the time. You're in for the next few days.

0:38:13 > 0:38:17Absolutely. It's been fabulous. It is a bit of fun, laughter.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19I can't grumble.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22They've all been perfect gentlemen to me as well,

0:38:22 > 0:38:27- so sometimes when they've had little swearing fits...- Even him?- Yeah.

0:38:27 > 0:38:31- Very impressive.- I love them. - They're very good, aren't they?

0:38:31 > 0:38:33- I love them.- Can't all stand about all day drinking tea and coffee.

0:38:35 > 0:38:37What does he mean?

0:38:37 > 0:38:39BUILDERS LAUGH

0:38:40 > 0:38:43I'm speechless. Actually, I'm not.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47I can't believe what people have given up, what they've donated,

0:38:47 > 0:38:51the hours they've worked to make this happen.

0:38:51 > 0:38:54Thanks for all your company's done. You've helped us massively.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59It's hurt him, and it hurts me that we can't give each and every one

0:38:59 > 0:39:03of them a programme of their own, but this is our thank you to you. You know who you are.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07And with just three days to go, there are still new structures

0:39:07 > 0:39:11going up in the garden. This is a geodesic dome -

0:39:11 > 0:39:13whatever that means.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15What does geodesic mean?

0:39:15 > 0:39:17We keep using the term and none of us know what it means.

0:39:17 > 0:39:19A geodesic dome is basically...

0:39:19 > 0:39:22The structure is made out of hexagons and pentagons

0:39:22 > 0:39:24in the triangle from, so it makes it a stronger structure

0:39:24 > 0:39:27basically that encloses space.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29So these can withstand hurricane-force winds.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33It was designed originally by a guy called Buckminster Fuller.

0:39:33 > 0:39:36Who calls their child Buckminster? Who wants their baby...

0:39:36 > 0:39:38- He's American.- Ah, that explains it, fair enough.

0:39:38 > 0:39:43This will provide shelter outdoors from the tropical Scottish weather.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Listen carefully. Remember all that grey I ranted on about?

0:39:49 > 0:39:54I'm about to eat some humble pie and agree with Gabby. I know.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57- And you were right about the grey, I'll admit it now.- It's amazing.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00I knew I was right about the grey, but thank you for agreeing.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05- A little bit smug, that look. - I am quite smug about it.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08I was smug beforehand because I knew it was going to work,

0:40:08 > 0:40:11you just really annoyed me with all the shouting.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14No, I don't think shouting's fair, is it?

0:40:14 > 0:40:16OK, booming at close range.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18'Yeah, OK, that's fairer.

0:40:18 > 0:40:22- 'I find designers so hard to read, whereas Mark...'- All right, team!

0:40:22 > 0:40:24- Yeah!- Tell me all about it, the black gold.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26The black gold!

0:40:26 > 0:40:31Oh, my goodness, it's like heaven. Oh, my God, can you see the steam?

0:40:32 > 0:40:36Everyone loves these cycleways so much, now they'll be pothole

0:40:36 > 0:40:38and crack-free for years to come.

0:40:40 > 0:40:44- Archie, give us a kiss.- Aw...

0:40:44 > 0:40:46You can't kiss a builder!

0:40:46 > 0:40:49They can tell we're nearing the end as rooms start to be completed.

0:40:49 > 0:40:55Inside, we now have an amazing sensory room which is really important for the kids. And us.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59And what are the key features when you're making a sensory room?

0:40:59 > 0:41:03We're trying to make it as calming as possible and also interactive

0:41:03 > 0:41:06so that children can decide what they want the room to do.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09- Why are you holding the block? - This is a talking cube.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12So this is red at the moment so that's why we're talking red,

0:41:12 > 0:41:14but this is really clever, watch this. Ready?

0:41:14 > 0:41:16- PA:- Green.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19- The whole room, it changes all the items in the room.- Can I have a go?

0:41:19 > 0:41:21Have a go, knock yourself out.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24- PA:- Yellow. Blue.

0:41:24 > 0:41:28- Absolutely everything will change at the same time.- Yellow.- Wow.

0:41:28 > 0:41:32'This can keep us amused for hours.'

0:41:32 > 0:41:35That is cool. It's not working.

0:41:35 > 0:41:39We've just discovered there's something not working in here,

0:41:39 > 0:41:41and it's the main light switch that he put in.

0:41:41 > 0:41:43THEY ALL LAUGH

0:41:45 > 0:41:50Some things never change, but outside, everything has changed.

0:41:50 > 0:41:54What an extraordinary thing you've pulled together. There are people delivering tarmac

0:41:54 > 0:41:57and putting it down, people delivering sand...

0:41:58 > 0:42:00There's people still building stuff all over the place.

0:42:00 > 0:42:04It is like standing in the middle of a human ant hill.

0:42:04 > 0:42:05It is like an ant hill, isn't it?

0:42:13 > 0:42:15Hey!

0:42:17 > 0:42:20Never, ever seen so many barrels on one job.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25- HIGH-PITCHED VOICE: - That's the way you do it!

0:42:25 > 0:42:27'I think they're all going slightly mad.'

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Ahhhhh....

0:42:29 > 0:42:31Ahhhh.

0:42:31 > 0:42:32'Yep, lost it.'

0:42:32 > 0:42:34Maaaaa...

0:42:34 > 0:42:37Hi-ho!

0:42:37 > 0:42:40The mania is definitely setting in now, man. I tell you.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43BUILDER WHINES He's the cream in the cake, that one.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47That's the same. Ahhhhhh.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50So it's getting there. They're not quite in tune.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52My last measurements...

0:42:52 > 0:42:55This is Saul, who is completely mad, by the way.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57He's come all the way from London with some flip-flops to make

0:42:57 > 0:43:00a musical sculpture for us, and I've made him work with Jock,

0:43:00 > 0:43:04which is just a perfect combination, I think. What else are you going

0:43:04 > 0:43:08- to do for us over there?- I'm going to put in two music mushrooms,

0:43:08 > 0:43:11which I make out of old recycled cylinders.

0:43:11 > 0:43:14And they're all tuned to different moods,

0:43:14 > 0:43:19like happy and another one is sort of mysterious or spooky.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23So what does a happy mushroom sound like as opposed to a mysterious,

0:43:23 > 0:43:26- spooky mushroom?- A happy mushroom makes you do this.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30And a spooky mushroom makes you do this.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32That's brilliant. I'll leave you to it.

0:43:32 > 0:43:35- Whatever it is you're doing, it looks awesome.- Thanks.

0:43:35 > 0:43:41- I can't wait to see the mysterious mushroom.- Thank you very much. - All right, darling. Mad.

0:43:41 > 0:43:46- Completely different planet, when you think about it. - Ma-ba-ba-baa. It's all a bit sharp.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50It's the last day, how can you tell?

0:43:50 > 0:43:52You know you're getting close to the end

0:43:52 > 0:43:56when all the old fluffy stuff starts turning up, eh?

0:43:56 > 0:43:58Lovely things coming through.

0:43:58 > 0:44:02And it's time for Jock's moment of glory.

0:44:02 > 0:44:04That's for you, darling, but you have to wear it. Promise?

0:44:04 > 0:44:08It's exactly the right colour for your eyes.

0:44:08 > 0:44:12- Look, you've got to wear it like this.- I'm dead embarrassed.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14THEY ALL LAUGH

0:44:14 > 0:44:16You've got to fold it in half round there.

0:44:18 > 0:44:20BUILDERS LAUGH AND CLAP

0:44:20 > 0:44:25- So lovely.- Thank you. - It really suits you. You see?

0:44:25 > 0:44:29'It's all very well, but he's got to carry on living and working round here once we've gone.

0:44:29 > 0:44:30'I do worry sometimes.'

0:44:30 > 0:44:33Going back to the office and explaining yourself,

0:44:33 > 0:44:36- how have you been describing it? - Well, it's much more frantic

0:44:36 > 0:44:39and chaotic than it comes across on the telly, but there's just

0:44:39 > 0:44:42so much work to get done in such a short space of time.

0:44:42 > 0:44:44I'm sorry, we'll have to interrupt this interview.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47I'm really sorry about this, but we've run out of tar again.

0:44:47 > 0:44:49Can you make another phone call?

0:44:52 > 0:44:54'This is the last thing we need.'

0:44:55 > 0:44:57You all right for that? It's a bit last minute.

0:44:57 > 0:45:00I'm going to go get the number, absolutely. Have you got the number?

0:45:00 > 0:45:02Look at that. Not even a 'maybe'.

0:45:02 > 0:45:05Not even, "Flipping heck, you'd be pushing it now."

0:45:05 > 0:45:07Just 'yes'. Just 'yes'.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09It's one tiny patch, right by the door.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12But, you know what, I'm not even going to worry about it.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14They say they can do it, so I believe them.

0:45:14 > 0:45:16They'll get it done somehow.

0:45:18 > 0:45:21Just nine days ago we took on a building

0:45:21 > 0:45:25threatening the security of this extended family.

0:45:25 > 0:45:30Cold, battered and cramped. It was a lead weight dragging everyone down.

0:45:31 > 0:45:34Now...

0:45:34 > 0:45:38Thanks to the efforts of around 300 local and not-so-local builders,

0:45:38 > 0:45:42it's a place fit for a family of any size.

0:45:42 > 0:45:45The hall has been completely refurbished.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48A new floor, solar panels and renewed heating and insulation

0:45:48 > 0:45:53will make sure this place is cosy and cheaper to run.

0:45:53 > 0:45:55The windows even have a special lining

0:45:55 > 0:45:58that reflects heat back into the building.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00The under fives have a safe place to play,

0:46:00 > 0:46:02where they can see and be seen.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05The children now have a top-of-the-range sensory room

0:46:05 > 0:46:08to chill and take time out.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10The art room has been transformed

0:46:10 > 0:46:14so that those imaginations can run riot once again.

0:46:17 > 0:46:21The office has been moved, there's new wiring, lighting and fencing.

0:46:22 > 0:46:25The old kitchen wall's been knocked through

0:46:25 > 0:46:27to make the ultimate in luxury cooking spaces,

0:46:27 > 0:46:31complete with wheelchair-friendly surfaces and units.

0:46:31 > 0:46:33Everyone can take part.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36New French windows lead to a new covered cafe area.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39Respite can be luxurious too.

0:46:40 > 0:46:42And that's just half the story.

0:46:42 > 0:46:46Because, outside, the cycleways have been upgraded with new tarmac

0:46:46 > 0:46:49and thousands of beautifully fitted bricks as edging.

0:46:49 > 0:46:53New bikes will mean even more children and adults can have a go.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58There are traffic lights, yes, traffic lights to play with.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01The big swing has been renovated and now has feet

0:47:01 > 0:47:03and a ramp to make it wheelchair friendly.

0:47:03 > 0:47:05There's a brand-new Wendy house.

0:47:05 > 0:47:08A dome adds another outdoor, all-weather play space.

0:47:08 > 0:47:14With a climbing frame, sandpit, multicoloured water feature,

0:47:14 > 0:47:18sensory garden and music garden, this place is a treasure trove,

0:47:18 > 0:47:21waiting for explorers.

0:47:21 > 0:47:25A fort, with rope features, provides a place to let off steam.

0:47:25 > 0:47:28We've even got flagpoles. Are you getting the message?

0:47:28 > 0:47:30There is so much!

0:47:32 > 0:47:38At last, it's time for Gillian and her friends to have their home back.

0:47:38 > 0:47:42- How important is this place to you? - It's huge.

0:47:42 > 0:47:47It's what keeps us all going. It's what keeps us all sane.

0:47:47 > 0:47:51- It's what keeps our families together.- It's a complete lifeline.

0:47:51 > 0:47:55- OK. Are you ready?- Yeah.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57Open your eyes.

0:47:57 > 0:47:59Oh, my God!

0:48:02 > 0:48:10- I don't recognise the place, this is unbelievable!- It's fantastic!

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Oh, my God, it's amazing!

0:48:13 > 0:48:15He's going to be in heaven.

0:48:15 > 0:48:17They're all going to be in heaven.

0:48:21 > 0:48:25- This is great.- I can't believe it.

0:48:25 > 0:48:26I can't believe it.

0:48:28 > 0:48:32The place has been insulated, the central heating system has been changed and doubled up

0:48:32 > 0:48:35to make it more efficient, so it doesn't cost so much to run.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37There's a new screen been put in above it to keep the heat in

0:48:37 > 0:48:39and stop it going out the dome.

0:48:39 > 0:48:42From that point of view, it's going to be cheaper to run.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44- That's fantastic. - But it's warmer, at the same time.

0:48:44 > 0:48:48It is, it's glorious. Absolutely glorious.

0:48:48 > 0:48:50It looks, as well, like it's for children.

0:48:50 > 0:48:53It's for them, they're going to come in and go, "This is for me."

0:48:53 > 0:48:56- They know it's for them. - For the wee ones.

0:48:56 > 0:48:59She's going to be in heaven.

0:48:59 > 0:49:02We decided to separate off, for the little ones,

0:49:02 > 0:49:05just so they aren't being run into by the big ones.

0:49:05 > 0:49:08She needs to be able to see me, that was the problem before.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10She was in a different room. She needs to be able to see me

0:49:10 > 0:49:13and know I'm still here, I haven't abandoned her or anything.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15When we came to see you in the school the other day,

0:49:15 > 0:49:17when you were trying to manage Jamie

0:49:17 > 0:49:21basically not killing his little sister accidentally,

0:49:21 > 0:49:24we could see that, so we knew that you had to be able to see them.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26But, also, that we needed that little separation.

0:49:26 > 0:49:30That's the sensory room, there. Do you want to see the sensory room?

0:49:30 > 0:49:32Yes, please.

0:49:38 > 0:49:39- This is great.- Oh, my goodness.

0:49:39 > 0:49:43At the moment, the room is currently blue.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46But, if you wanted to change it, you could.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49- That did that?!- No?

0:49:49 > 0:49:53- PA:- Green. Orange.

0:49:53 > 0:49:57- This is just out of this world. - It is absolutely beautiful.

0:49:57 > 0:50:00I never expected it to be so fantastic.

0:50:00 > 0:50:04- OK, what shall we see next? The art room?- Yes, OK.

0:50:07 > 0:50:11- Oh, my goodness.- Oh, my goodness!

0:50:11 > 0:50:15This is bigger! Definitely bigger.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18You'd think, wouldn't you? In fact, we kept it the same size.

0:50:18 > 0:50:19But it was all a bit old and knackered,

0:50:19 > 0:50:22so we ripped everything out and we've got brand-new units,

0:50:22 > 0:50:26closable ones at that end, children accessible ones at this end.

0:50:26 > 0:50:28So you can decide what is out for them to get themselves

0:50:28 > 0:50:30and what you actually put away.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33Obviously, a big space for them to play, easy to clean.

0:50:33 > 0:50:38Low-level and high-level sinks, so the little ones can get at it, too.

0:50:38 > 0:50:42That's fantastic. Erin used to sit on the chair.

0:50:42 > 0:50:44She'll love it, absolutely love it.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46She's just going to lose herself in here.

0:50:46 > 0:50:50Did you make some beds? Because we'll be living here 24 hours a day.

0:50:50 > 0:50:52Definitely.

0:50:52 > 0:50:55You can imagine, with the storage, office space and other things,

0:50:55 > 0:50:59we had to close down that little kitchen that you had.

0:50:59 > 0:51:02We haven't been able to expand it very much.

0:51:02 > 0:51:05It is just... It's a good one, but it's not...

0:51:05 > 0:51:07Well, come and have a look. That's probably easier.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21You are joking me! You're joking me! Look at this. Look at this!

0:51:22 > 0:51:24Oh, my God!

0:51:26 > 0:51:32It's like a posh house. It's a posh house.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35- It is, exactly.- I can't believe it, I actually can't believe it,

0:51:35 > 0:51:37I can't take it in. It's beautiful.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42Look, the sink's low so Erin will be able to wash her hands

0:51:42 > 0:51:45without having to stand on the chair.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47Is it real?!

0:51:47 > 0:51:52Grill-microwave, this is a very high-end grill-microwave.

0:51:52 > 0:51:54Oven for cooking. Freezer.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58And fridge.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02- Giant fridge. - The size of it is fantastic.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04I noticed that you noticed that this is low-level.

0:52:05 > 0:52:08Of course, it depends on who's using it.

0:52:08 > 0:52:11If I actually show you, there's a button here.

0:52:13 > 0:52:16So you can change this to whatever height you need.

0:52:16 > 0:52:18To suit whoever's using it.

0:52:18 > 0:52:21Sink and hob, no matter what size, age or whatever you are.

0:52:21 > 0:52:23That's incredible!

0:52:25 > 0:52:28You then think it's frustrating cos you can't reach the top cupboards.

0:52:28 > 0:52:33Only, interestingly, you actually can reach the top cupboards.

0:52:33 > 0:52:37- It's like Doctor Who! - That's unbelievable.

0:52:37 > 0:52:41Oh, my goodness. They're going to love it.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44This is not only for the children and young adults with disability,

0:52:44 > 0:52:48this is very much, as you made very clear to me over the past few days,

0:52:48 > 0:52:53respite area, where you can get just half an hour to take a breather.

0:52:53 > 0:52:55Have a cup of coffee, sit and have a chat.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58We've made use of the ugly little bit out the back, here.

0:52:58 > 0:53:00So, if you come with me.

0:53:03 > 0:53:07- Oh, my God.- Oh, God.

0:53:07 > 0:53:09- Oh, my God.- It's lovely.

0:53:09 > 0:53:13- Three seats, have yourself a seat. - Civilisation!

0:53:13 > 0:53:15How have we done so far?

0:53:15 > 0:53:19- It's amazing.- Couldn't have...

0:53:19 > 0:53:20Never, never dreamed...

0:53:20 > 0:53:23When we say it's amazing, it's amazing, we mean more!

0:53:23 > 0:53:27It's just... This is just wow.

0:53:27 > 0:53:31It's mind-blowing. I just can't put it into words.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34My imagination couldn't reach this far.

0:53:34 > 0:53:37And I've got one heck of an imagination!

0:53:41 > 0:53:44Walk forward, please. Walk forward, walk forward.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46Look up.

0:53:47 > 0:53:49Oh, my goodness!

0:53:49 > 0:53:52THEY ALL CHATTER EXCITEDLY

0:53:57 > 0:53:59Oh, my goodness.

0:53:59 > 0:54:02Oh, my goodness.

0:54:03 > 0:54:05We've got a door!

0:54:11 > 0:54:12Traffic lights!

0:54:17 > 0:54:20- Let's go.- Green man, safe to cross.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28Come and have a look around. We're losing track of people.

0:54:30 > 0:54:32Look, and there's a sign. What does that sign say?

0:54:37 > 0:54:40HMS Pudsey, look. Magical.

0:54:42 > 0:54:49- We could have discos outside, with a barbecue.- Can you imagine?

0:54:54 > 0:54:56Thank you, Jamie.

0:54:56 > 0:54:58I can't thank you enough.

0:54:58 > 0:55:02I can't thank everybody enough for this fantastic place.

0:55:02 > 0:55:06We kind of knew that there were bits of it that were here already.

0:55:06 > 0:55:10But it's just been improved...tremendously.

0:55:10 > 0:55:15Tremendously. And he wants to be a lollipop man. So happy.

0:55:17 > 0:55:19We knew stuff was happening, but...

0:55:20 > 0:55:25And the thing is, The Yard's feel that it had,

0:55:25 > 0:55:28its whole ethos and everything, you've kept it all.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30Oh, it's just great.

0:55:33 > 0:55:37- How do you feel about the people that did this?- Just amazing.

0:55:37 > 0:55:41They have to come back and let us show them how appreciative we are.

0:55:41 > 0:55:46- Well, they'll be here soon. - Oh, gosh! Are they coming in now?

0:55:46 > 0:55:48It'd be good to see them.

0:55:49 > 0:55:53And here they come, over 300 of them!

0:55:53 > 0:55:55APPLAUSE

0:56:06 > 0:56:10The staff that work here at The Yard have a reputation

0:56:10 > 0:56:12for turning the mundane into the magical.

0:56:12 > 0:56:18But this transformation, in less than ten days,

0:56:18 > 0:56:21is truly, truly in the world of make-believe.

0:56:21 > 0:56:26So, somewhere in there, I know there was lots of blood, sweat and tears,

0:56:26 > 0:56:30but there must be a magic wand somewhere.

0:56:30 > 0:56:33A lot of our children and young people have very complex needs

0:56:33 > 0:56:37and what we try and do is make life more fun and more fulfilling

0:56:37 > 0:56:40for each and every one of those families.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44And we do that because we really care.

0:56:44 > 0:56:51And I think what everybody here has proved is that you care, too.

0:56:51 > 0:56:56For me, and all of my team, that is truly uplifting.

0:56:56 > 0:57:01So, we truly, truly could not have wished for a more wonderful present.

0:57:01 > 0:57:04So, thank you. Everybody has to cheer!

0:57:04 > 0:57:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:10 > 0:57:16# My tears are dryin'

0:57:16 > 0:57:19# My tears are dryin'... #

0:57:19 > 0:57:21I asked one of the builders here the other day

0:57:21 > 0:57:24who was in for several thousand pounds of his own money,

0:57:24 > 0:57:27as well as his time, why he was so committed to this,

0:57:27 > 0:57:29given that he didn't have any children that came here

0:57:29 > 0:57:31and didn't even know anybody who came here.

0:57:31 > 0:57:35He said, "Because for the next 10, 20 years, I'll be able to drive past

0:57:35 > 0:57:39"this place and say, I had something to do with that."

0:57:39 > 0:57:42And, of course, if you've ever given to Children In Need,

0:57:42 > 0:57:44you've got something to do with this as well.

0:57:44 > 0:57:47I mean, the people that have done the work here

0:57:47 > 0:57:51for the last nine days have put more than generosity into this.

0:57:51 > 0:57:54They've poured their hearts and souls into it.

0:57:54 > 0:57:56Inspirational, isn't it?

0:57:56 > 0:57:59# Thank you, thank you... #

0:57:59 > 0:58:01- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:58:01 > 0:58:03Thank you.
