0:00:07 > 0:00:10Hello and welcome to a very special DIY SOS,
0:00:10 > 0:00:12coming to you from Norris Green in Liverpool.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18We're about to attempt a build that's ten times bigger than anything
0:00:18 > 0:00:19we've done before.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24We're going to have so much to do, it's going to be frightening.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27I genuinely don't think we'll finish.
0:00:28 > 0:00:32We're running out of days. That's not good.
0:00:32 > 0:00:36- We've got just ten days, but an army of support.- It's a challenge.
0:00:36 > 0:00:40It's the biggest challenge I've ever done in this space of time.
0:00:40 > 0:00:41I'll never forget this job.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45Over the next hour, we're going to show you how a community
0:00:45 > 0:00:47can come together to make a difference...
0:00:47 > 0:00:50An area like this, it needs some good to come to it.
0:00:50 > 0:00:53There's nothing round here, so this is where everyone just comes.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56It's about time something happened here.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59If that centre wasn't there, there'd be nowhere for them to go.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03..and how your support for Children In Need tonight
0:01:03 > 0:01:05will change people's lives.
0:01:06 > 0:01:10By texting tonight, you can donate £5 to Children In Need
0:01:10 > 0:01:13and help give children, and young people
0:01:13 > 0:01:16all over Britain, a safer, brighter future.
0:01:16 > 0:01:20This is DIY SOS - The Biggest Build.
0:01:35 > 0:01:40There hasn't been much good news about young people this year.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43New analysis of official unemployment figures
0:01:43 > 0:01:46reveals how the real victims of the economic crisis are the young...
0:01:46 > 0:01:48And all over the country,
0:01:48 > 0:01:52services for young people are a target for cuts.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57BBC London has learned that youth clubs and projects which help
0:01:57 > 0:02:01young people across the capital are threatened with closure.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04This centre, and four others like it in Middlesbrough,
0:02:04 > 0:02:06face the possibility of closure.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10But youth clubs all over the country do incredible work
0:02:10 > 0:02:13with young people.
0:02:13 > 0:02:18The more youth clubs there are in an area, the fewer ASBOs get issued.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22That's just one reason why Children In Need
0:02:22 > 0:02:24supports youth clubs
0:02:24 > 0:02:25in places like Norris Green,
0:02:25 > 0:02:28one of the poorest areas of Liverpool,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30with a reputation for gang crime.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34A Liverpool man has telling how he was shot at by armed raiders
0:02:34 > 0:02:36as he raced to help his friend.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40The gang fired the sawn-off shotgun as they fled from a shop
0:02:40 > 0:02:42in the Norris Green area of the city.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45You're scared to go out cos of the gangs on the corners
0:02:45 > 0:02:47and stuff like that.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50People are getting shot and that. You just get scared.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52- It's just frightening?- Yeah.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55I think it's hard when they're about 14 or 15 -
0:02:55 > 0:02:58they don't really know what to do apart from to join a gang,
0:02:58 > 0:03:01cos that's who they follow.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05If they haven't got any alternative, then they won't know.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09In an area like this, young people need somewhere to go,
0:03:09 > 0:03:12and that place is Norris Green Youth Club.
0:03:14 > 0:03:19That centre does have so much. It is a big part of the community there.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23If we stop one kid from joining a gang and ending up in prison
0:03:23 > 0:03:26and whatever, that's an achievement.
0:03:28 > 0:03:33For the staff here, this isn't just a job. It's a calling.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35Meet Glenn, the man who works night and day
0:03:35 > 0:03:38to help the young people of Norris Green.
0:03:38 > 0:03:42From the minute I stepped through these doors over seven years ago,
0:03:42 > 0:03:43I've loved every minute of it.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46I was born in this area, grew up in this area, I've got family,
0:03:46 > 0:03:48my son lives in this area.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52These teenagers can make you want to tear your hair out, can't they?
0:03:52 > 0:03:58Yeah, but...to turn them round and get them to achieve or get them
0:03:58 > 0:04:01standing on top of a mountain abseiling down when they would
0:04:01 > 0:04:04never have the chance, and you see the look on their face
0:04:04 > 0:04:08when they've achieved it or climbed up or whatever, it's great.
0:04:08 > 0:04:13So it's clear this youth club is vital to the people of Norris Green.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16But it's falling apart.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19It was built in the 1950s and it's been starved of attention
0:04:19 > 0:04:21ever since.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24You ask anybody, "Can I have some money for the building?"
0:04:24 > 0:04:25No. No chance.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28With no money for even basic repairs,
0:04:28 > 0:04:32the centre is just one step away form closure.
0:04:32 > 0:04:37When it gets cold, it gets cold. There's draughts everywhere.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39Doors don't shut properly.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42It's tired - the building's very, very tired.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45We're limping along at the moment.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48That's where we come in.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50I'm slightly worried by the size of the place.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53I knew we were taking on something big,
0:04:53 > 0:04:56but this vast - it's like two aircraft hangers.
0:04:56 > 0:05:00It is a big old place. We used to call it the TARDIS.
0:05:00 > 0:05:04Looks like you've got some water damage coming in.
0:05:04 > 0:05:05Does this roof leak?
0:05:05 > 0:05:08It does leak from time to time,
0:05:08 > 0:05:11usually when you're trying to play table tennis or a bit of pool.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15- Cold in the winter, I guess? - Very cold. These windows don't shut.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18They don't shut at all. The wind howls through it.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21Sometimes you have to put some plastic up to cover it.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25- That looks like a big area in there. - Yes, that's the hall.
0:05:25 > 0:05:29If we do a bit of football...
0:05:29 > 0:05:32But we don't now, cos the ceilings are so bad - the ball hits it,
0:05:32 > 0:05:34it rattles the lights, it could knock a panel out,
0:05:34 > 0:05:38it could hurt a young person or a member of staff.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42- Are people excited about what's happening here?- Very excited.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45It's like Christmas. They're very, very excited about it.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47They can't wait. I am, myself.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51I haven't been sleeping properly the past few weeks over this.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54I haven't been, either, cos I know what we've got!
0:05:55 > 0:05:57This job is massive!
0:05:57 > 0:06:01The floor area of the youth club is 2,000 square metres.
0:06:01 > 0:06:05The average new-build house is just 79.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10And we've got just ten days before we hand it back to Glenn
0:06:10 > 0:06:12and the team.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16On behalf of Children In Need, we're asking business to donate
0:06:16 > 0:06:21hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of materials and equipment.
0:06:21 > 0:06:23But most of all, we're going to need people.
0:06:26 > 0:06:31Lots and lots of people - at least 100 a day, every day.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Come on in, gentlemen!
0:06:38 > 0:06:40This is what this place is all about -
0:06:40 > 0:06:42pointing youngsters in the right direction.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46There's kids I've spoken to who say they're frightened
0:06:46 > 0:06:48to come out, but they can come here.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51We're not just building a building, we're building an opportunity
0:06:51 > 0:06:54and giving the chance for the amazing people who work here
0:06:54 > 0:06:56to change young people's lives around
0:06:56 > 0:06:58and point them in the right direction.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Let's make things happen.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09First thing's first, and it's all hands on deck.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15- This is your corner, isn't it?- Yeah. That's the old recording studio.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18It wasn't sound-proofed enough, so all that's being ripped out.
0:07:18 > 0:07:22There's a mezzanine floor going in there and a new recording studio.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24So we're on top of this?
0:07:24 > 0:07:28I think it's a bit early to tell whether we're on top of it, you know?
0:07:28 > 0:07:30What's going on here? This is your area, isn't it?
0:07:30 > 0:07:33Basically, we've got Brian and his boys
0:07:33 > 0:07:36and we're going to strip this hall out, strip this wall out,
0:07:36 > 0:07:38all this boarding's coming off the ceiling
0:07:38 > 0:07:41and there's a new self-contained mezzanine floor going in this area.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43We've got to rip it out
0:07:43 > 0:07:46and hand it over to the mezzanine floor people.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49You've got a bunch of animals working with you, haven't you?
0:07:49 > 0:07:53Yeah, yeah, I'm quite used to these type of plugs.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Do you know what's particularly fascinating about this?
0:07:56 > 0:08:00If you take this plug and follow it to where it goes - look at this.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03- How does that work?!- Ha-ha!
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Don't worry - we've got plenty of people to help Billy, too.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11But make no mistake, this job is on a vast scale.
0:08:11 > 0:08:16You've got 123 people on site today. That's a record.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20The redesign of the outside of the youth club is a key part of the challenge,
0:08:20 > 0:08:23because, let's be honest, it's really ugly.
0:08:23 > 0:08:25A combination on neglect
0:08:25 > 0:08:27and anti-climb guards make it look hideous.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30Just as well it's hidden behind heavy fencing,
0:08:30 > 0:08:33meaning that passers-by can't see it.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36But surely it's supposed to be welcoming?
0:08:36 > 0:08:40It looked wrong. It just looked like a prison. All these railings.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43You go in there, it's like you're getting locked in.
0:08:43 > 0:08:44What's the point in going in there?
0:08:44 > 0:08:49In charge of the design for this one is Charlie Luxton.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52Charlie's a Big Build veteran
0:08:52 > 0:08:56and his bold ideas are just the kind of strong statement we want here.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01The biggest challenge with the design of this project
0:09:01 > 0:09:05has been about lifting this feeling of it being under siege,
0:09:05 > 0:09:09which it really had before we started work, and creating
0:09:09 > 0:09:13something that's very robust. So it's got to be really simple.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15Overarching all of that, the biggest thing is,
0:09:15 > 0:09:17we've got to do it in nine days.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23And volunteering his time and skills to work with us is
0:09:23 > 0:09:25Liverpool architect Daniel Smith.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27How's it going to work between you two?
0:09:27 > 0:09:31Obviously, Charlie comes with us on the jobs we do,
0:09:31 > 0:09:34but you've already been here working on the architecture of this place
0:09:34 > 0:09:37for a while, so how's it working out?
0:09:37 > 0:09:41We get in a darkened room and we fight.
0:09:41 > 0:09:46Are you looking for it to be beautiful or just purely functional?
0:09:46 > 0:09:51- Or marry the both? - Functional but funky.- Really?- Yeah.
0:09:51 > 0:09:55It's a youth centre, so there needs to be colour, light,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58it needs to be robust for the kids and stuff.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00It's got to survive another 50 years.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06So, what's involved in this million-pound build?
0:10:06 > 0:10:08Well, here are the headlines -
0:10:08 > 0:10:11we're putting in two new mezzanine floors
0:10:11 > 0:10:15and re-wiring, re-plumbing and re-roofing the whole building.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19There'll be a new recording studio, tiered seating in the big hall,
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and a new entrance hall at the front.
0:10:22 > 0:10:26All this in just nine days, so we can hand it back on the tenth.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28And all for free.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30One of the biggest jobs is refurbishing
0:10:30 > 0:10:33the ceilings in both halls.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36They have to be finished in the first few days in order for us
0:10:36 > 0:10:38to work on the floors.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41- Look at this roof. Don't you want to see that roof?- Yes.
0:10:41 > 0:10:48- At the moment, plans are to re-clad it.- Yes.- I think that's mental.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51I've been saying for months now, "I don't want to do that."
0:10:51 > 0:10:54I think it'd be quicker to nip off those nails
0:10:54 > 0:10:58with a big pair of tin snips, then spray it and clad it.
0:10:58 > 0:10:59Spray paint it?
0:10:59 > 0:11:02- Yeah, with a sprayer.- There you go, that's why he's here -
0:11:02 > 0:11:06to come up with the big ideas. Thinking on his feet. It's a great idea.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09But when we strip back the ceiling, we make a discovery.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11There's obviously been a bit of a problem
0:11:11 > 0:11:13in the building at some point.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15There's been a fire in this building.
0:11:15 > 0:11:19The boys have just opened the thing up. Look up here.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22Really, a fire of that extent, this building could have gone.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Lucky they got that out.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26That could have been good night, Irene, really.
0:11:26 > 0:11:27So, as knackered as it is,
0:11:27 > 0:11:31we're lucky to have any building to work with at all.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34Further investigation suggests the fire is at least 20 years old
0:11:34 > 0:11:37and the ceiling's been extensively repaired,
0:11:37 > 0:11:41it's structurally sound, but it's not restorable.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43I noticed that your cladding is going on the ceiling.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45Are you going to paint that?
0:11:45 > 0:11:47- No, we're going to leave it woody. - Are we?- Yeah.
0:11:47 > 0:11:53It's got a special spread of flame protection on it
0:11:53 > 0:11:55and we're going to leave it timbery.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59I'd have wanted to paint it, but he knows what he's doing, this boy,
0:11:59 > 0:12:02so I'm sure it'll look bright and robust and modern.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05Just what the centre needs, really.
0:12:05 > 0:12:09But there's no point in doing any of this work
0:12:09 > 0:12:11if we don't' stop the roof from leaking
0:12:11 > 0:12:14Chris and Steve are looking after the roof. It's sizable.
0:12:14 > 0:12:16It's a big roof and we haven't got much time.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18The weather's a bit against us at the moment.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20When finished,
0:12:20 > 0:12:23it'll form a single plastic skin over the whole building.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25It's big, though.
0:12:25 > 0:12:27You've got to make sure that every single seam
0:12:27 > 0:12:30that you put in is absolutely watertight.
0:12:30 > 0:12:32Absolutely. It's a one-hit system.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37Are you staring to get the idea? This is a huge job.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39Normally, we like to get the occupiers
0:12:39 > 0:12:42out of the building before we smash it to bits.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45But this job is so big, there was no time to wait.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Helping Glenn to clear out is Nabil,
0:12:48 > 0:12:51who's been a regular at the centre for seven years.
0:12:51 > 0:12:56I used to go round on the streets in a little gang and used to cause
0:12:56 > 0:12:58mischief and throw stones at windows
0:12:58 > 0:13:01and get chased off the police.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04Then someone said, "You've got to go to the youth centre."
0:13:04 > 0:13:08Originally, I got barred for three months when I did come,
0:13:08 > 0:13:12because I was throwing things at staff and doing stuff to staff.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15Glenn just kept saying to me, "Come on, come back",
0:13:15 > 0:13:19so I don't know whether they believed in me, in a sense.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22One time, it just made me realise, "What am I doing?"
0:13:22 > 0:13:25Make no mistake, this youth club has changed Nabil's life around.
0:13:25 > 0:13:29He's now studying youth work and working part time with Glenn.
0:13:29 > 0:13:33He's just one of lots of young people who've come through the door.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36Hopefully, they say good things about the centre and the staff.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39So, yeah, it does have an impact on everyone, I think,
0:13:39 > 0:13:42in the community and families in general.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44You're seen as something positive
0:13:44 > 0:13:48and young people can get something positive out of it.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53This centre and hundreds like it help to show young people
0:13:53 > 0:13:56a different, more exciting future.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59That's why we're doing this and that's why we want your support.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03To keep supporting projects like this,
0:14:03 > 0:14:07please donate £5 to Children In Need now.
0:14:07 > 0:14:11Text DIYSOS to 70705.
0:14:11 > 0:14:15Text messages will cost £5 plus your standard network charge
0:14:15 > 0:14:18and £5 will go to Children In Need.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26MUSIC: "Hollyoaks Theme"
0:14:26 > 0:14:29This job's so big, it's not just our fantastic tradesmen
0:14:29 > 0:14:31and women who are getting involved.
0:14:31 > 0:14:35Channel 4's teen drama, Hollyoaks, is filmed just down the road
0:14:35 > 0:14:38and some of the cast are helping out with the painting.
0:14:38 > 0:14:39And the most vital job of all.
0:14:39 > 0:14:43The tea-round! That's 84 teas and 28 coffees, please.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Tea, please.- Tea? Any sugar?- One.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50Four coffees, one latte...
0:14:50 > 0:14:51Four coffees?
0:14:51 > 0:14:54Do you know what...
0:14:54 > 0:14:56Right. Two coffees, two sugars.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58That's six coffees.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03She got there in the end!
0:15:05 > 0:15:09I thought we'd take a look at where we are. The kitchen has electricity and plumbing in it.
0:15:09 > 0:15:13At the end here, the recording studio has been knocked down and a mezzanine floor
0:15:13 > 0:15:16has been put in, so we now have two stories.
0:15:16 > 0:15:19Down this wall, the tiny windows have been knocked through,
0:15:19 > 0:15:23brand new windows in. Look up at the office, that's got a new window and new studwork.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26There's new office studwork here and here.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30Outside, we've built a concrete pad and put a new atrium on it.
0:15:30 > 0:15:35In here, the toilets have been knocked down and we've started to rebuild. This is the disabled loo.
0:15:35 > 0:15:37Come with me because that's only half the build.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39In here, the ceiling has been stripped,
0:15:39 > 0:15:41the stairwell has been taken away,
0:15:41 > 0:15:43three walls have disappeared
0:15:43 > 0:15:45and we've built another mezzanine floor.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47And that's only the inside.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50Outside, half this vast roof has been covered
0:15:50 > 0:15:53and we've started on the fencing around the perimeter.
0:15:53 > 0:15:56Yes, it's a huge job, but we are winning.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04Look! That's Liverpool. That's the Mersey, that's the Liver Building.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10Oh, look! That's us on the way to work, there.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12We've made a great start, but it is only a start
0:16:12 > 0:16:15and there's an Everest of work ahead of us.
0:16:15 > 0:16:19Luckily, our boys working on this are mountain climbers.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22As well as a new entrance hall, we're cladding the front of the club
0:16:22 > 0:16:25to make it a real present in Norris Green.
0:16:25 > 0:16:29I'm not much of one for design, as you know, but I quite like that.
0:16:29 > 0:16:32- Yeah...Yeah.- It's green.- It's green.
0:16:32 > 0:16:37- But then we were told, "No red, no blue because of the football connection."- Of course.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41And then it was, "OK, well, what does that leave you?"
0:16:41 > 0:16:46- Norris Green - green seemed like a really...- I see what you did there!
0:16:47 > 0:16:50But at this stage in the build, the biggest challenges are those
0:16:50 > 0:16:53that will be hidden when the building is finished.
0:16:53 > 0:16:58Right now, it's the plumbers, heating engineers and electricians who have their work cut out.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00I want to introduce you to someone.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03- This is Chris, who supplied us with our boilers.- Hi.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06Charlie, you were saying this system,
0:17:06 > 0:17:08the key thing about this, is saving money.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11Yeah, I mean, they had enormous bills.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14I think it was somewhere around 12 grand for their bills
0:17:14 > 0:17:17for heating and electricity. Enormous.
0:17:17 > 0:17:19They had a really old cobbled together system.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21And so the aim was to half that.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23- And this will do that, will it? - Yeah.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Compared to what they had before, this modern gas system
0:17:26 > 0:17:28will pretty much half the bills,
0:17:28 > 0:17:31so that's a saving of about £5,000, £5,500 a year.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34You look at it and it's an ordinary thing.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37They are one of the hardest-working teams on the build.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39- It's between them and the electricians.- They have to be.
0:17:39 > 0:17:43They're not going to get by on their looks, are they? Let's be honest.
0:17:43 > 0:17:45LAUGHTER
0:17:47 > 0:17:50These trades have a real battle on their hands
0:17:50 > 0:17:55because this 50-year-old building is a nightmare to work with.
0:17:55 > 0:17:59This is how this building's made. Look. This is all pre-cast concrete,
0:17:59 > 0:18:05so when they start drilling into the walls, it explodes and comes apart.
0:18:05 > 0:18:09That was a whole for Billy's plug socket, by the way.
0:18:09 > 0:18:11And in places the concrete is reinforced with steel,
0:18:11 > 0:18:14so cutting routes for pipes and cables is slow.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17- Did you see the sparks? - HE LAUGHS
0:18:19 > 0:18:22And remember - not only are these guys replacing every pipe,
0:18:22 > 0:18:26every radiator, every wire, light-switch and plug in this huge building,
0:18:26 > 0:18:28they're doing it in just nine days.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33Flipping heck!
0:18:33 > 0:18:35Doesn't that terrify you, this, look.
0:18:35 > 0:18:39I look at that the same way as I would look my income tax return form.
0:18:39 > 0:18:43At the end of the year when you go, "I don't know where to start with this."
0:18:43 > 0:18:46The job itself is quite a straightforward job.
0:18:46 > 0:18:50But you would usually do this with a team of three men over six weeks or something
0:18:50 > 0:18:54to get it all done, tested and finished. You know, it is a challenge.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57All you can do is just go for it, really.
0:18:57 > 0:19:01As head electrician, Shane has a lot resting on his shoulders,
0:19:01 > 0:19:04but he's not letting the pressure get to him.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06I'll never forget this job as long as I live.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09And after this I never want to speak to you ever again.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12I've got your number. I'll give you a ring at Christmas.
0:19:12 > 0:19:16- I'll change my number.- I've got your address and your mum's address.
0:19:16 > 0:19:20- I'll ring you!- After Thursday, you'll never get hold of me again.
0:19:20 > 0:19:23- I'm going to change my name by deed poll.- I am coming up to see you!
0:19:23 > 0:19:25THEY LAUGH
0:19:27 > 0:19:28'But Shane has a secret weapon.'
0:19:28 > 0:19:33Doesn't that look terrifying? 'It's Billy!'
0:19:33 > 0:19:35This is big, bad cable, man!
0:19:35 > 0:19:37You don't get these in little houses!
0:19:37 > 0:19:42I tell you what, we couldn't have done without Billy. Hand on heart, what a guy. What a guy.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46After years of electrocuting innocent members of the team - me in particular -
0:19:46 > 0:19:48Billy's found his true calling.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51Do you know what? It's 35 years since I've done anything like this
0:19:51 > 0:19:53and I'm loving it.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56Loving it, loving it, loving it.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59Really, really a throwback to my days as an apprentice
0:19:59 > 0:20:03working in the big factories and that. Oh, I love it.
0:20:03 > 0:20:07What a guy. In fact, we're going to take him with us when we leave.
0:20:07 > 0:20:12Thank you. That's very kind. We don't like to see we're getting ahead because we can jinx it.
0:20:12 > 0:20:16'But on this one we're getting ahead. Nothing can go wrong.' Who hasn't turned up?
0:20:16 > 0:20:21What happened is the guy's come out to have a look at the soundproofing for this recording studio yesterday
0:20:21 > 0:20:23and he didn't feel very confident about it.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26And this morning he's just rang me and said he can't do it.
0:20:26 > 0:20:32- The whole sound recording studio.- No, we knew this was going to get done.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34They've dropped me in the proverbial.
0:20:34 > 0:20:39'We're trying to do so much so fast that we're asking a lot of people
0:20:39 > 0:20:42'and sometimes we're asking too much.'
0:20:42 > 0:20:44- We've got the wood.- No, we haven't.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47They were bringing the manpower and the wood?
0:20:47 > 0:20:51It wasn't wood. It was all shop-fit metal, so it was all being built into metal studding.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54Two layers of metal studding with a soundproof curtain
0:20:54 > 0:20:57in the middle of it and two layers of acoustic board on the outside.
0:20:57 > 0:21:01- They were bringing all of that? - Everything.- And the people? - And the people.
0:21:01 > 0:21:06- That's all gone.- All gone. At the moment...- We have no recording studio.- Nothing else there.
0:21:08 > 0:21:12# Close enough to start a war... #
0:21:12 > 0:21:17These studios are one of the biggest components of the build
0:21:17 > 0:21:20and a vital part of the youth club.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23We managed to get a couple of pounds together and build basically 4 x 3
0:21:23 > 0:21:26and a bit of plasterboard and that of plyboard.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30We have a number of staff that teach guitar, drums, keyboard,
0:21:30 > 0:21:33music production and bands can come in,
0:21:33 > 0:21:35practise, our staff will then say,
0:21:35 > 0:21:40"If you do this and do that, it'll sound better and we'll record you."
0:21:40 > 0:21:45So they can go away with their own disc, give it to their families, give it out if they're doing a gig,
0:21:45 > 0:21:49maybe to a record company. So, there's all of that they'll get and it's all free.
0:21:49 > 0:21:52I got told about it and then got told about the studios,
0:21:52 > 0:21:54so I thought I'd give it a go
0:21:54 > 0:21:57and then I've been coming ever since and it's helped me...
0:21:57 > 0:22:00They've put me in for loads of shows and stuff, and it's helped me
0:22:00 > 0:22:03build my confidence with singing more and playing the piano,
0:22:03 > 0:22:06and to go out there and just go for it.
0:22:06 > 0:22:07# Maybe there's a place
0:22:07 > 0:22:08# Maybe there's a reason... #
0:22:13 > 0:22:15The old studios were falling apart
0:22:15 > 0:22:19and about as soundproof as a paper bag.
0:22:19 > 0:22:24But they gave young people in this tough area the chance to express themselves.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28A chance they almost certainly wouldn't have without this centre.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31We've been coming here since we were about 16, I'd say.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34When we started out, nobody had any money.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37You've got a paper round whatever and that just covers your guitar strings.
0:22:37 > 0:22:42You'd come here because it's free
0:22:42 > 0:22:44and there's always somewhere to go.
0:22:46 > 0:22:49Music is just one way that this youth centre
0:22:49 > 0:22:52and hundreds like them keep young people off the streets
0:22:52 > 0:22:55and get them involved in something positive.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57You can support the good work right now -
0:22:57 > 0:23:00just by sending a text.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03To keep supporting projects like Norris Green...
0:23:03 > 0:23:06Please donate £5 to Children In Need now...
0:23:06 > 0:23:12By texting DIYSOS to 70705.
0:23:12 > 0:23:14I thank you.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31We may have had a knock-back with the studio, but everywhere else
0:23:31 > 0:23:34the support we're getting is incredible.
0:23:34 > 0:23:38Does anybody want a coffee?
0:23:38 > 0:23:39'Everything from skips...'
0:23:39 > 0:23:44He said to us, "We'll give you £10,000 worth of skips for this job."
0:23:44 > 0:23:46We've run out of the £10,000.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49He said, "I tell you what, the whole job,
0:23:49 > 0:23:52"we'll keep running them so that you don't run out.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54"We'll cover the lot." Off his own back.
0:23:54 > 0:23:58- '..to cake shops...'- Do you think it would be wrong of me to have two?
0:23:58 > 0:24:01If you need any more, give me a shout through the week.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03Don't say things like that as you'll get a phone call.
0:24:03 > 0:24:08- '..banks...'- This is presented from Deutsche Bank.
0:24:08 > 0:24:10'..to scrap metal merchants...'
0:24:10 > 0:24:14Thank you very much. £2,500. That will go so far for this centre.
0:24:14 > 0:24:17'..and, most of all, our fantastic tradespeople.
0:24:17 > 0:24:21'You won't see them all, but everyone's giving so much to this centre.'
0:24:21 > 0:24:25On site today we have...136 so far.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28It's only 9:30 am.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31As well as refurbishing the building,
0:24:31 > 0:24:33we're doing the garden as well.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36And who better to oversee it than Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins?
0:24:36 > 0:24:38There he is. What a jumper!
0:24:38 > 0:24:41So here, this bit will be where they can come and just relax.
0:24:41 > 0:24:45Where we're standing now, we'll have a pebble path
0:24:45 > 0:24:47and planting all-round here
0:24:47 > 0:24:49and then some tables and chairs as a relax-area.
0:24:49 > 0:24:52- And on the other side... - What other side?
0:24:52 > 0:24:54On the opposite side of this building where
0:24:54 > 0:24:57the sleepers are. Have you seen the sleeper beds?
0:24:57 > 0:25:00- I didn't know you were doing that side as well.- Well, in theory.
0:25:00 > 0:25:04This is the top parts. I'm going to deck that and put some seating in.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07And then this is going to be an Asian garden - oriental garden.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10We'll beach that down and make that an area
0:25:10 > 0:25:15- to go and contemplate, if you like. - Nice! Thanks very much for coming and doing this.
0:25:15 > 0:25:16No, my pleasure. Privilege, mate.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20I couldn't bring myself to ask about the jumper!
0:25:20 > 0:25:23The centrepiece of the small hall is going to be this mural.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26It's the creation of two self-styled urban illustrators,
0:25:26 > 0:25:29Dave Bain and Loch Ness.
0:25:29 > 0:25:34And helping Mr Bain and Mr Ness today Neil Buchanan -
0:25:34 > 0:25:36local boy and Art Attack presenter.
0:25:36 > 0:25:41We've got Neil Buchanan just down there. Childhood hero of mine,
0:25:41 > 0:25:42which I'm totally chuffed about.
0:25:42 > 0:25:46Norris Green, to me, is where I used to come to the swimming baths
0:25:46 > 0:25:48a million years ago.
0:25:48 > 0:25:53In those days, it was called Noggsie Green Baths or Noggsie Spittoon.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55We used to go there every week
0:25:55 > 0:25:58and even in those days it was a bit run-down, you know.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01So to come and do something like this is absolutely awesome for me.
0:26:04 > 0:26:08As I said, the support we're receiving has been amazing.
0:26:08 > 0:26:09But in order to get that recording studio built,
0:26:09 > 0:26:12I'm going to have to try and push that generosity
0:26:12 > 0:26:14just a little bit further.
0:26:15 > 0:26:19I need about 500 metres of woodwork. 4 x 2.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22And I need about four to six chippies, ideally six chippies.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24Rogan have to build the whole thing out of studwork to do it. We can't get it anywhere else.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26- I know you've given a lot already, but I wonder whether you could... - I'll make a phone call.
0:26:26 > 0:26:33- I'm sure with John's persuasion, we'll sort something out.- Thank you very much.- Cheers.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39You know where you're watching a conversation and you can't work out
0:26:39 > 0:26:41whether it's going well or going badly...
0:26:41 > 0:26:44Oh, they're smiling now. They're smiling.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49What do you reckon? Can you get it?
0:26:49 > 0:26:53- You can?- Sorted.- The lot? The people and the...
0:26:53 > 0:26:55Yeah. Not a problem.
0:26:55 > 0:26:59Oh, another hug! I'm the one who supplied them.
0:26:59 > 0:27:02These lads have been amazing. Just to give you an idea,
0:27:02 > 0:27:05that pretty much doubles their input on this job.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08So that means the studio's back on.
0:27:09 > 0:27:11There we go!
0:27:11 > 0:27:14Right, guys, 8:30 am this morning I roll in only to be told
0:27:14 > 0:27:18that we don't have anyone to build the recording studio.
0:27:18 > 0:27:23- What happens?- About 10 am, we speak to George and his boss, John.
0:27:23 > 0:27:30About midday, some people arrive. And now, 4:30 pm,
0:27:30 > 0:27:33they're building us a soundproof recording studio wall
0:27:33 > 0:27:36- all the way along the back. Look at that.- Brilliant!
0:27:41 > 0:27:43So, we got a recording studio
0:27:43 > 0:27:46and who better to christen the new studio than Sonia?
0:27:46 > 0:27:50A woman with nine top 20 hits to her name, born just a few miles from Norris Green.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54# You'll never stop me from loving you
0:27:54 > 0:27:58# Wherever you can go I will follow you... #
0:27:59 > 0:28:00But despite all those hits,
0:28:00 > 0:28:06SOS celebrity correspondent Mark Miller has no idea who she is.
0:28:06 > 0:28:11- Hello there.- Hello.- Any tea for anyone?- I'm Mark. What's your name?
0:28:11 > 0:28:14- Hi, I am Sonia.- Hello, Sonia. Thank you very much.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16Which ones are the teas?
0:28:16 > 0:28:19- Sonia?- Oblivious. He's got no idea at all.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22Have you spent a bit of time in the recording studios yourself?
0:28:22 > 0:28:26Just a little bit. Yeah, but I think this is just going to be fab, you know,
0:28:26 > 0:28:28with all the live instruments.
0:28:28 > 0:28:32- Give us a song! Come on! - Let's hear what it sounds like. Hit a few notes.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35- I could sing my big hit anyway. - Go on, then.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38# You'll never stop me from loving you
0:28:38 > 0:28:41# It doesn't really matter what you put me through.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44# You'll never stop me from loving you. #
0:28:47 > 0:28:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:28:49 > 0:28:52- Does that jog your memory at all, Mark?- Thank you, Sonia.
0:28:52 > 0:28:54Still no idea at all, has he?
0:28:54 > 0:28:57The recording studios are important to the young people.
0:28:57 > 0:29:02But even more important is the kitchen - regularly the busiest place in the centre.
0:29:02 > 0:29:06We cook most nights. Kids tend to eat a lot of chips.
0:29:06 > 0:29:10What we're trying to do is just promote healthy cooking
0:29:10 > 0:29:13and show them how to cook it, so they'll be able to go home,
0:29:13 > 0:29:19speak to their mum and dad and say, "I'd like to do a fajita or a stew," or something like that.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22Something that's healthy, there's not a lot of fat in, it's good for you.
0:29:22 > 0:29:24Something different that they've not had.
0:29:24 > 0:29:28It's like if your mum and dad are out, you've got the ingredients
0:29:28 > 0:29:35and you can cook something and you're not just eating crap, like.
0:29:35 > 0:29:40Well, I never used to like peppers or well...
0:29:40 > 0:29:43I like them now and spicy foods.
0:29:43 > 0:29:45I never used to eat them but I do now, like.
0:29:45 > 0:29:48To make this a cleaner, more attractive space
0:29:48 > 0:29:51and get more young people cooking and eating healthily,
0:29:51 > 0:29:55these splendid chaps are fitting a top of the range kitchen.
0:29:55 > 0:29:59It's going to be a boon for people like Davey -
0:29:59 > 0:30:01one of the centre's keenest members.
0:30:01 > 0:30:06- Done. Look at that, you're a superstar in the making.- Perfecto!
0:30:06 > 0:30:09He has complex learning disabilities.
0:30:09 > 0:30:15He was very shy, wouldn't communicate with other people
0:30:15 > 0:30:19unless he had me with him or a member of the family.
0:30:19 > 0:30:22Now, he will go and ask people things,
0:30:22 > 0:30:24he'll have a go at doing different things.
0:30:24 > 0:30:29There's a lot you can do, football, tennis, snooker.
0:30:29 > 0:30:31Go on the computers.
0:30:31 > 0:30:36It's not like if you could do one thing, you could do loads.
0:30:36 > 0:30:40It's really brought him out.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43For people like Davey, youth clubs like Norris Green offer
0:30:43 > 0:30:47the chance to grow and develop in a way no where else does.
0:30:47 > 0:30:52This is the kind of work you will be supporting by giving to Children In Need now.
0:30:52 > 0:30:55To keep supporting projects like Norris Green,
0:30:55 > 0:30:59donate five pounds to Children In Need now.
0:30:59 > 0:31:06Text DIYSOS to 70705!
0:31:06 > 0:31:10Text messages will cost £5 plus your standard network charge
0:31:10 > 0:31:12and £5 will go to Children In Need.
0:31:12 > 0:31:16For full terms and conditions, visit:
0:31:21 > 0:31:25Away from the build, I want to find out more about Norris Green
0:31:25 > 0:31:28and the people we are doing this for.
0:31:28 > 0:31:32Tell us honestly, what's Norris Green like as a place to grow up.
0:31:32 > 0:31:37I think people make it out to be proper bad but it's not as bad.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40If someone spent a day here they would not think of half the things that get said.
0:31:40 > 0:31:44When you have a youth centre to go to like ours, it is amazing.
0:31:44 > 0:31:49When we're chatting, it's a confusing message,
0:31:49 > 0:31:54I say, "Why'd you come here?" and they say, "It's safe."
0:31:54 > 0:31:57But when you say, "Is it unsafe on the streets?" They say, "No,
0:31:57 > 0:32:01"it's the way people portray it." Which is it?
0:32:01 > 0:32:04If you don't understand, and don't live round here...
0:32:04 > 0:32:09Most of the kids that grow up in Norris Green are streetwise.
0:32:09 > 0:32:12So, they don't find it nerve-wracking or anything.
0:32:12 > 0:32:17But to people that come outside Liverpool they might find this place intimidating.
0:32:18 > 0:32:21It is certainly an area with high levels of unemployment
0:32:21 > 0:32:22and deprivation.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26Sadly, it's crime that has made Norris Green infamous.
0:32:26 > 0:32:31I look at it in different stages, the young people come to centres
0:32:31 > 0:32:33and be part of the community.
0:32:33 > 0:32:39Also, we've got those ones bordering to going into crime or involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.
0:32:39 > 0:32:45We have the hard-core but you have to remember there is only a small
0:32:45 > 0:32:49minority of people that are criminally minded.
0:32:49 > 0:32:53There are more good people in Norris Green than bad.
0:32:53 > 0:32:56But it is the young people on the edge that these youth workers
0:32:56 > 0:33:00are trying to give direction. A chance.
0:33:00 > 0:33:03Norris Green is still a good place to live.
0:33:03 > 0:33:06And, you know, run a youth centre.
0:33:06 > 0:33:09< POLICE SIRENS BLARE
0:33:09 > 0:33:11Just as I'm saying that!
0:33:16 > 0:33:20It's been a funny day, ups and downs.
0:33:20 > 0:33:23You think you've got over one thing and another thing happens.
0:33:23 > 0:33:26I don't know whether to be pleased about the day or worried.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28I would worry!
0:33:30 > 0:33:36And, by the middle of the job, it's clear there are two things we really need to worry about.
0:33:36 > 0:33:39What's going on with the bathroom?
0:33:39 > 0:33:43Have we not taken control of it today?
0:33:43 > 0:33:47There is so much plastering to be done but it's not there yet.
0:33:47 > 0:33:54There's no plaster boarding. All these empty shelves are waiting on electrics, plumbing,
0:33:54 > 0:33:57then it can be boarded and skimmed. Same in there.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59There's loads to do.
0:33:59 > 0:34:02- We're not going to finish this? - Not at all. I'm sure by
0:34:02 > 0:34:05The Power Of Grey Skull we'll pull it together by the weekend.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08Are you expecting more plasterers?
0:34:08 > 0:34:10I bloody hope so!
0:34:10 > 0:34:18The other big worry is the big hall where the restoration of the floor is a make or break job.
0:34:18 > 0:34:23- This is a sprung floor?- It is. - A lovely bit of kit.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26It's seen better days but that might come up all right.
0:34:26 > 0:34:30To restore this floor to its former glory, it has to be sanded
0:34:30 > 0:34:34and varnished twice and then allowed to dry.
0:34:34 > 0:34:38To get that done, we have to finish the rest of the room well in advance.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41We've got 36 hours to wrap this up.
0:34:41 > 0:34:43It's important we get the woodwork done.
0:34:43 > 0:34:47If we haven't got it done by Monday, we will not be finished by Thursday.
0:34:47 > 0:34:51We are not going to get finished.
0:34:51 > 0:34:5736 hours to finish a new staircase, and a bank of tiered seating.
0:34:57 > 0:35:01But we do have extra help, Liverpool actor Simon O'Brien
0:35:01 > 0:35:02and Dean Sullivan,
0:35:02 > 0:35:07Damon Grant and Jimmy Corkhill to those still mourning Brookside.
0:35:07 > 0:35:10You remember Brookie? Eh, eh, Brookie.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13They're giving their time to the project.
0:35:13 > 0:35:16It's not level! Take it away!
0:35:16 > 0:35:19It's all right. It is now, look!
0:35:22 > 0:35:25That's an old chippies' trick.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27If only they could plaster.
0:35:27 > 0:35:32RADIO: Nick, you are the presenter of the BBC show DIY SOS
0:35:32 > 0:35:36and you are in Liverpool looking for assistance.
0:35:36 > 0:35:39We are up against it and losing the battle.
0:35:39 > 0:35:44We need some help from specific trades. We are desperate to get dry liners.
0:35:44 > 0:35:48If you are anywhere near the Liverpool area, come and help us.
0:35:48 > 0:35:53You may help us pull this out of the bag because we are worried.
0:35:53 > 0:35:57'Nick Knowles who is in charge of the BBC DIY SOS...'
0:35:57 > 0:36:01We'll wait to see if the phone rings and whether we can get some dry liners
0:36:01 > 0:36:06and plasterers to help because if we don't over the next couple of days
0:36:06 > 0:36:08I think we might have lost this.
0:36:19 > 0:36:22Thanks to a massive effort in the main hall,
0:36:22 > 0:36:25the stairs are in and the tiered seating is up.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28So, the sanding can begin right on schedule.
0:36:28 > 0:36:31- How quickly do you move? - Very quickly.
0:36:31 > 0:36:36- I want them to keep putting the skirting down.- Let them carry on.
0:36:36 > 0:36:40- How long till you get down there? - We will keep it that way.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43So, full steam ahead.
0:36:47 > 0:36:49For about five minutes.
0:36:49 > 0:36:53We have a major catastrophe with the electricity.
0:36:53 > 0:36:57Until we get the electricity back on, we're at a standstill.
0:36:59 > 0:37:05They have come in with 15 amp machines and are wondering why we haven't got the feed.
0:37:05 > 0:37:10The whole thing was stripped out with everything, mains and everything.
0:37:12 > 0:37:16This is holding everything up, it's only happening because we are
0:37:16 > 0:37:19trying to lose so many jobs at once but at least that means
0:37:19 > 0:37:22there's plenty of people around to help sort it out.
0:37:22 > 0:37:26Paul said he might be able to get a jenny down for a supply.
0:37:26 > 0:37:31Five machines and we need everyone powered up to get this finished.
0:37:31 > 0:37:34As a failsafe, get the jenny here as well and we will fire one up
0:37:34 > 0:37:37off the section board for now. So, we have a supply for now.
0:37:37 > 0:37:41When the machines are going, you'll have enough for everything.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44- Excellent.- We will have that on in half an hour.
0:37:47 > 0:37:50Well, thanks to the new jenny we can get moving on the floor again
0:37:50 > 0:37:54and we are only a day behind schedule.
0:37:54 > 0:37:57But the plastering problem is becoming a nightmare.
0:37:57 > 0:38:03We have had phenomenal support from tradespeople but this job is so big we still need more.
0:38:03 > 0:38:06But is there anyone else out there?
0:38:06 > 0:38:10We haven't got anybody to plasterboard.
0:38:10 > 0:38:15We're down on plasterboard and chippies. Just like...
0:38:15 > 0:38:17All hands on deck today.
0:38:18 > 0:38:23There are two plasterers, me and another guy.
0:38:23 > 0:38:28I am afraid the appeal yesterday didn't work.
0:38:28 > 0:38:32Loads of sparkies and plumbers, which is brilliant because they're getting their jobs done.
0:38:32 > 0:38:38Chippies are mowing through these ceilings. All good. The floor is going down.
0:38:38 > 0:38:42But no walls, nothing is being finished. I can't keep up with it.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45There is a possibility some will turn up tomorrow.
0:38:45 > 0:38:50But, I mean, all this needs plasterboard, all of that.
0:38:53 > 0:38:58- There's a lot of filling and making good.- And there's two of us.
0:38:58 > 0:38:59And you need about... 20.
0:38:59 > 0:39:0220 borders, 20 spreads.
0:39:02 > 0:39:0440 people.
0:39:04 > 0:39:09We aren't going to find 40 people, 40 tradesmen.
0:39:09 > 0:39:13I don't want to sound negative or anything but...
0:39:13 > 0:39:18It's not about being negative, it's realistic about the fact we're losing the job.
0:39:18 > 0:39:23It is just about numbers now. We are losing the numbers game.
0:39:23 > 0:39:27But we do have some more help with the dry lining from two people
0:39:27 > 0:39:30with close connections to the centre.
0:39:30 > 0:39:34Remember this girl? Well, this is her dad.
0:39:34 > 0:39:37I used to come here. It is a good place.
0:39:37 > 0:39:39It has done a lot for my daughter anyway.
0:39:39 > 0:39:41It is brought her right out of her shell.
0:39:41 > 0:39:46She has more confidence with other people. I think it's a great thing.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49And remember this guy? Davey.
0:39:49 > 0:39:53- Well, this is his brother. Thank you for helping out.- No worries.
0:39:53 > 0:39:56Look at the groups that get round here.
0:39:56 > 0:39:59Brings people on like that, when you never thought would.
0:39:59 > 0:40:03They're the people that get lost in society with learning disabilities,
0:40:03 > 0:40:06With this place, it brings them all together.
0:40:06 > 0:40:09It's a good place and safe for them to feel as a group.
0:40:09 > 0:40:11It's brilliant.
0:40:11 > 0:40:15As well as family members telling us what this centre does,
0:40:15 > 0:40:17we have heard it from the young people themselves.
0:40:17 > 0:40:23How this tired, run-down building changes people's lives.
0:40:23 > 0:40:26I thought it was brilliant so I carried on going for a number of years.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29I've enjoyed it and stuff.
0:40:29 > 0:40:36They take you on residentials and do everything with you that they can do to get you off the streets.
0:40:38 > 0:40:41Gives them a place to go where they feel safe.
0:40:41 > 0:40:46I am always here. I love it here.
0:40:46 > 0:40:50Improves their confidence and expands their horizons.
0:40:50 > 0:40:55I can't wait to get back in there and see the changes
0:40:55 > 0:40:59and the different new things what they've done with the place.
0:40:59 > 0:41:01It will be amazing.
0:41:01 > 0:41:03We have been told about the transformation
0:41:03 > 0:41:06but we don't know what is happening.
0:41:06 > 0:41:09I think we will be shocked, even though we know it's a big change,
0:41:09 > 0:41:12we don't know how much of a change.
0:41:12 > 0:41:17Somehow, we have to get this job finished.
0:41:17 > 0:41:21You don't know whether to be excited about the things happening
0:41:21 > 0:41:23or worried about the things that aren't.
0:41:23 > 0:41:26There is genuine concern it is just so vast.
0:41:26 > 0:41:30And any one of these things
0:41:30 > 0:41:32that we can't work out
0:41:32 > 0:41:35could actually end up stopping us doing the job,
0:41:35 > 0:41:38could stop us finishing so...
0:41:42 > 0:41:43..you know...
0:41:53 > 0:41:588:30am and we are about to find out whether we will succeed with this job or not.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00We made radio appeals.
0:42:00 > 0:42:04And tomorrow we need trained plasterers.
0:42:04 > 0:42:08Online appeals. We have rung every company in the phone book.
0:42:08 > 0:42:11We are renovating a youth centre for Children In Need.
0:42:11 > 0:42:14We're looking for help from people plasterers and borderers.
0:42:14 > 0:42:17And everyone on site has tried everyone they know.
0:42:17 > 0:42:20HE SPEAKS AT SPEED
0:42:20 > 0:42:23I'm after a commitment!
0:42:23 > 0:42:25Then it's crunch time.
0:42:25 > 0:42:31We need plasterers today or this job won't be finished.
0:42:31 > 0:42:37If a small army of plasterers don't walk around that corner in the next hour or so,
0:42:37 > 0:42:40we have had it. Genuinely, we won't do it.
0:42:43 > 0:42:46We were praying for plasterers
0:42:46 > 0:42:50and at the 11th hour, our prayers are answered.
0:42:57 > 0:43:02I know we're milking it a bit but go with us on this one.
0:43:11 > 0:43:13We've got an army!
0:43:16 > 0:43:20- How are you getting on? - Fit as a butcher's dog!
0:43:20 > 0:43:22Not bad for a 72-year-old.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25- You have come out of retirement for us.- Yes, I'm always available!
0:43:25 > 0:43:27Thank you very much.
0:43:27 > 0:43:33I'll plaster as long as I can. I'm the oldest plasterer here!
0:43:33 > 0:43:35As well as the oldest plasterer in Liverpool,
0:43:35 > 0:43:38we also have the most famous. Craig Phillips,
0:43:38 > 0:43:41Big Brother winner, builder
0:43:41 > 0:43:44and true believer in youth clubs like this.
0:43:44 > 0:43:49Kids nowadays, when they're in their teen ages they're stuck in limbo.
0:43:49 > 0:43:53They can't go to the pub until they're 18.
0:43:53 > 0:43:55Nothing to do outside in the parks.
0:43:55 > 0:43:59Youth centres like this, you need to bring them in off the streets,
0:43:59 > 0:44:04keep them out of trouble and it helps with their socialising skills as well.
0:44:07 > 0:44:09He's crashed into the plaster!
0:44:09 > 0:44:11Just wanted to slow him down a bit!
0:44:11 > 0:44:14Nothing a little bit of filler won't sort out!
0:44:14 > 0:44:17Like we need slowing down... Unbelievable!
0:44:19 > 0:44:21This is incredible!
0:44:21 > 0:44:25Cheers, mate. Thanks, guys - big push.
0:44:27 > 0:44:29They've saved our bacon.
0:44:33 > 0:44:38Now we're catching up on the plastering, all we've got to worry about is the small matter of...
0:44:38 > 0:44:40well, finishing everything else.
0:44:40 > 0:44:45We've got two days, including today, to wrap this job up completely. How are we on the electrics?
0:44:45 > 0:44:50All flying in now - all containment, all the wiring's done. Ready to start switching on power.
0:44:50 > 0:44:53The hall - how are we doing there?
0:44:53 > 0:44:56Spot on. Waiting for the tilers. Getting that in, the tilers.
0:44:56 > 0:45:00As soon as that's done, we'll get the suites in.
0:45:00 > 0:45:03- What about the chippying?- Skirting's going in now. Just the doors and frames to go in.
0:45:03 > 0:45:07- The painting?- Nearly there - we've done the big hall.
0:45:07 > 0:45:12Just waiting for the skirting boards going on.
0:45:12 > 0:45:15Coat all them up and we should be there.
0:45:15 > 0:45:19We've asked a lot of the people of Liverpool
0:45:19 > 0:45:21and they've delivered in spades.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24We're only sorry we can't show all the incredible workers and the work
0:45:24 > 0:45:27that went into this build.
0:45:27 > 0:45:30You're going to have to leg it, aren't you?
0:45:30 > 0:45:34- Where have you got to go?- Home to get changed, then back into work.
0:45:34 > 0:45:37They've been working here all day.
0:45:37 > 0:45:41He's got to go home, get changed, and go and do a night shift.
0:45:41 > 0:45:44Over 500 separate tradesmen have worked on this.
0:45:44 > 0:45:49People from all walks of life - from firemen and policemen to Members of Parliament.
0:45:49 > 0:45:52'It's fantastic to try and get those people'
0:45:52 > 0:45:56who are on the edge of getting involved in nefarious activities
0:45:56 > 0:45:59to perhaps persuade them that there's a better way.
0:45:59 > 0:46:05I think something like this will be a huge boon to the area.
0:46:05 > 0:46:07Even the art teacher from a local prison...
0:46:07 > 0:46:10A lot of the men grew up around this area
0:46:10 > 0:46:13and obviously got into trouble at some point.
0:46:13 > 0:46:17But their children are still around the area,
0:46:17 > 0:46:21so I thought it's a really good thing to do, to help out.
0:46:21 > 0:46:25Cos they don't want the same things for their children as they had.
0:46:25 > 0:46:26So I've come to help out.
0:46:27 > 0:46:31Everyone has given their support. And so can you.
0:46:31 > 0:46:35ALL: To keep supporting projects like Norris Green...

0:47:07 > 0:47:10That's it.
0:47:10 > 0:47:12Nine days, up to 200 people on site a day,
0:47:12 > 0:47:1818,000 man hours has gone into this.
0:47:18 > 0:47:22And now it's done. And we're about to give it back to the community.
0:47:22 > 0:47:25What a job! What a job!
0:47:26 > 0:47:31Just nine days ago, Norris Green Youth Centre was falling apart.
0:47:37 > 0:47:41But for head youth worker Glenn, the job it did was vital.
0:47:41 > 0:47:44This is the only youth centre in this area -
0:47:44 > 0:47:46the only place for young people to go.
0:47:46 > 0:47:50There's nowhere else for them to go, really.
0:47:52 > 0:47:58His colleague, Cheryl, knows how much the centre means to the young people who use it.
0:47:58 > 0:48:00It's open seven days a week.
0:48:00 > 0:48:04These are here right from the start, banging on the door,
0:48:04 > 0:48:05right until close.
0:48:05 > 0:48:09Like them, centre co-ordinator Eileen knows what it could be.
0:48:09 > 0:48:14At the moment, it's so dowdy and old, well-used... There's no respect.
0:48:14 > 0:48:20It's got no credibility. Once it's done, it'll be a different story.
0:48:22 > 0:48:25Deana has just one room on her mind.
0:48:26 > 0:48:31The recording studios! And the studios, just for them to get done.
0:48:32 > 0:48:34And Shauna is just as excited.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37I just can't wait to see it. It's going to be great!
0:48:40 > 0:48:43Nabil? Well, he knows just what it will mean
0:48:43 > 0:48:45for the young people of Norris Green.
0:48:45 > 0:48:48- You pleased to see what's happening here?- Yeah, yeah.
0:48:48 > 0:48:53I think seven years of being the old prison will have paid off.
0:48:53 > 0:48:56You might have a lot more difficult kids to deal with.
0:48:56 > 0:48:58That's what we're here for.
0:48:58 > 0:49:02Thanks to a superhuman effort by the tradespeople of Liverpool,
0:49:02 > 0:49:06we are about to hand back Norris Green Youth Centre.
0:49:11 > 0:49:13We wanted to create a building
0:49:13 > 0:49:16that would really reach out to young people.
0:49:16 > 0:49:20We added a new entrance hall and clad the front to make it bright and inviting,
0:49:20 > 0:49:22turning an eyesore into a landmark.
0:49:25 > 0:49:31On waste ground at the rear, we've created an outdoor gym to attract more young people to the centre.
0:49:31 > 0:49:33And a garden.
0:49:35 > 0:49:40And all around, the new, secure windows let the light flood in.
0:49:44 > 0:49:48Nowhere is the transformation more dramatic than in the main hall.
0:49:53 > 0:49:57The new ceiling is brighter and safer
0:49:57 > 0:49:59and the restored floor is just a revelation.
0:50:01 > 0:50:04The tiered seating creates an audience space
0:50:04 > 0:50:08for performances or films, and a great spot just to hang out.
0:50:11 > 0:50:15The new recording studio and rehearsal rooms
0:50:15 > 0:50:17will allow singers and musicians
0:50:17 > 0:50:22to practise without drowning out the rest of the centre.
0:50:22 > 0:50:25The old kitchen was the centre of the youth club,
0:50:25 > 0:50:27but it was falling to pieces.
0:50:27 > 0:50:32The new one is hygienic, hardwearing and, let's face it, cool -
0:50:32 > 0:50:37a great place for young people to learn to cook.
0:50:37 > 0:50:41And there's a new office, new meeting room...
0:50:41 > 0:50:43and finally, the small hall.
0:50:43 > 0:50:46It won't leak any more, and it's flooded with light.
0:50:58 > 0:50:59There's a new IT suite, art room
0:50:59 > 0:51:02and upstairs, a chill-out space.
0:51:04 > 0:51:08It's an incredible transformation, and really something to cheer about.
0:51:08 > 0:51:14But remember, this is where youth workers change young people's lives.
0:51:18 > 0:51:19It's crucial to them,
0:51:19 > 0:51:21so I wonder how they're going to react?
0:51:21 > 0:51:223, 2, 1 - open your eyes.
0:51:22 > 0:51:25ALL GASP, SQUEAL AND CHEER

0:52:30 > 0:52:35- What do you think? - Oh, my God! I just can't take it in.
0:52:35 > 0:52:38It's like you've put us in another building.
