0:00:03 > 0:00:06Today I'm in a county whose county town is the birthplace of none other than Charles Darwin.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09And, as a county, it's also home to Britain's oldest fortified manor house.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13So, if you're interested in houses with history, this is a great place to be.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But where am I? Well, stick around and I'll show you.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Today we're helping a couple say adios to Spain

0:00:32 > 0:00:36and hello to a creative life in the country.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Alistair can write downstairs. I can say, "Gin & tonic, dear."

0:00:39 > 0:00:44But this property search is all about finding the right feeling.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46I'm not picking up great vibes.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48So will we succeed?

0:00:48 > 0:00:52- How's our feeling meter? - Love it, love it, love it. I want it. I love it.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54THEY LAUGH

0:00:54 > 0:00:55Bingo!

0:00:55 > 0:00:57I think we might.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Today we're in Shropshire where,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03back in 1809 in Shrewsbury, Charles Darwin was born, the man,

0:01:03 > 0:01:06of course, who revolutionised our understanding of human evolution.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10But this gorgeous building behind me is also worthy of note.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14This is Stokesay Castle, Britain's oldest fortified manor house.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17As you can see, the county is packed full of history,

0:01:17 > 0:01:22but it's also packed full of some gorgeous houses set within beautiful rolling countryside.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27I think Shropshire is a real gem, the perfect place to escape from it all.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30'And there's plenty of space when you get here

0:01:30 > 0:01:33'because Shropshire is England's largest landlocked county,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36'but also one of the least densely populated.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41'Bordered by four English counties and Wales to the west,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45'you'd be hard-pushed to find a more idyllic rural landscape.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49'And don't just take my word for it, author PG Wodehouse of Jeeves and Wooster fame

0:01:49 > 0:01:55'was so inspired him he described it as "The nearest earthly place to Paradise".

0:01:57 > 0:02:00'It's a big county with some equally big claims.

0:02:00 > 0:02:05'250 years ago it was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution,

0:02:05 > 0:02:10'and Ironbridge Gorge, the UK's first World Heritage Site is a lasting testament.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15'The smokestacks are long gone from Shropshire,

0:02:15 > 0:02:19'but what you will find are pretty villages and two of England's best preserved medieval towns -

0:02:19 > 0:02:24'Shrewsbury and Ludlow. Whilst Shrewsbury is a must-see for history buffs,

0:02:24 > 0:02:29'with over 600 listed buildings, Ludlow has become a Mecca for foodies,

0:02:29 > 0:02:34'with two Michelin-starred restaurants and an annual food and drink festival.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39'So I think you'll agree there is plenty to whet the appetite.'

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Let's think about house prices.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46They have, of course, dropped nationally in the last 18 months.

0:02:46 > 0:02:51Here in Shropshire, since April 2008, they've fallen by 13%

0:02:51 > 0:02:53- great news, of course, if you're a buyer.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57And when you get an idea of the quality of the housing stock that's on offer at the moment,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01there's a very good reason for being tempted to be one.

0:03:01 > 0:03:06'For pure luxury, check out this six-bedroom mansion in Winnington.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10'Dating from the 1890s, it's been modernised and extended to include five reception rooms

0:03:10 > 0:03:13'and sporting facilities fit for an Olympian.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17'If that doesn't keep you busy, I'm sure the 17 acres of land will.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20'But you'll need deep pockets to purchase this one -

0:03:20 > 0:03:23'it's on the market for £2.75 million.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28'For slightly more modest budgets,

0:03:28 > 0:03:33'how about this five-bedroom individually designed brick and timber house near Market Drayton?

0:03:33 > 0:03:36'The contemporary accommodation includes two reception rooms,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39'a stylish kitchen and an indoor pool.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43'And you can take the plunge for £590,000.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47'But if it's a character home you're after,

0:03:47 > 0:03:50'this four-bedroom Grade 2 listed Tudor house

0:03:50 > 0:03:53'in Ford near Shrewsbury could be yours for £375,000.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57'It's been sympathetically restored

0:03:57 > 0:04:02'and the three reception rooms retain plenty of must-have period features.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07'And the garden is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine.'

0:04:07 > 0:04:10So, as you can see, some very attractive properties

0:04:10 > 0:04:14at some pretty attractive prices, which is exactly why today's buyers want to move here.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18'Linda and Alistair have found love second time around

0:04:18 > 0:04:20'and tied the knot in 2004.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24'Shortly after, they made an escape to the country,

0:04:24 > 0:04:27'but to a different one altogether - to Spain.

0:04:27 > 0:04:34'Together with Linda's youngest son, Max, they live in a five-bedroom villa above the hills in Malaga.'

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Since buying it four years ago, we've developed it extensively,

0:04:38 > 0:04:42- both adding rooms and outside as well.- We decided the first priority

0:04:42 > 0:04:46was an outdoor kitchen and bar and barbecue area.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51We worked our way round the garden, building different areas like the raised vegetable garden,

0:04:51 > 0:04:54the herb garden, the kissing terrace, the gin and tonic terrace.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59- And how often do we kiss on the kissing terrace?- Oh, all the time, all the time.- Yeah.

0:04:59 > 0:05:06'This creative couple - Linda is a writer and painter and Alastair an author of historical novels -

0:05:06 > 0:05:12'have clearly put their heart and soul into creating their dream house, so why do they want to leave?

0:05:12 > 0:05:14'Well, with four grown-up children between them

0:05:14 > 0:05:17'back in Shropshire, family ties are proving a much bigger pull

0:05:17 > 0:05:21'than their laid-back Spanish lifestyle.'

0:05:21 > 0:05:24This is a beautiful home and it's a beautiful setting.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27It's a lovely place to live but it's not a home without the children,

0:05:27 > 0:05:29and we miss them so much.

0:05:29 > 0:05:37So I think the decision to go back to the UK so we can be close to them is the deciding issue for us.

0:05:37 > 0:05:43And also it would make Linda so happy to see much more of the children.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45And if she's happy then I'm happy.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50'Having lived in Shropshire before, it's a county they know and love.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54'But leaving their Spanish dream is going to be an almighty wrench

0:05:54 > 0:05:57'and their next property will have a tough act to follow.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59'So what exactly do they have in mind?'

0:05:59 > 0:06:03We want it to be rustic and have a magical feel,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07whether it's already there for its got the potential

0:06:07 > 0:06:09for us to transform it into a magical place.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14'So what ingredients will a house need to cast a spell on these two?'

0:06:14 > 0:06:17In our next house, I think we definitely need five bedrooms,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21a large kitchen cum dining room/family room with a range stove

0:06:21 > 0:06:24and an open fire would be nice if we could get both.

0:06:24 > 0:06:30'Character will be a master, but what else is going to charm Linda and Alistair?'

0:06:30 > 0:06:32As you can see, I love books.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36I am a bookaholic and, if there's only one thing we can take

0:06:36 > 0:06:39back with us to the UK, it would be all the books, so it is essential

0:06:39 > 0:06:42that we have a room that can be converted into a library.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45This place has been an absolute inspiration for me

0:06:45 > 0:06:48in my writing and I'm hoping that, when we move back to England,

0:06:48 > 0:06:51there will be something there that is equally inspirational,

0:06:51 > 0:06:59- whether it's fantastic views or the ambience of the house, that sort of thing.- 'But it's not just literary ambitions Linda and Alistair

0:06:59 > 0:07:01'have for their return home.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03'Having grown vegetables in Spain, Linda wants to set up

0:07:03 > 0:07:09'a smallholding business growing local produce and keeping everything from chickens to alpacas.'

0:07:09 > 0:07:14When it comes to the land I think we've decided the minimum would be five acres.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16We don't mind going up to around 30 acres.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21'An exciting new venture awaits but, before they can head home,

0:07:21 > 0:07:24'they need to know how much they can spend on their country property,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27'so we've invited a local agent in to value their villa.'

0:07:27 > 0:07:33Most impressed. A very unique property that blends a lot of architectural styles,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35offers coastal living in the countryside,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38which is what most people are looking for.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41I would value this house at 2.2 million euros.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48'With that in mind, what's the final figure in sterling for Shropshire?'

0:07:48 > 0:07:54We're looking to spend up to £1 million.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00'Today we're spreading the property search county-wide

0:08:00 > 0:08:03'from Oswestry in the north to Ludlow in the south

0:08:03 > 0:08:06'so we can show Linda and Alastair the most inspirational homes on

0:08:06 > 0:08:09'the market and soften the blow of leaving Spain.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13'We've tracked down some amazing period houses to view, but I'll be

0:08:13 > 0:08:16'keeping quiet about the prices until after we've looked around.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19'And finally, our mystery house will challenge their wish list,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22'but will it get their creative juices flowing?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26- Guys, welcome to Shropshire. - Thank you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30This is where you wanted to be, this is where we've brought you, all the way from Spain.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35- Yeah, and the sun.- And the sun. You might be forgiven for thinking we were still at your place.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Many people watching this will be saying, "Why are you moving?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40- What are you doing?"- I know, I know.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43Well, it is mainly because of the children.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46They're over here, they can't come over to see us as much as they'd like,

0:08:46 > 0:08:49and we miss them, so we thought we'd like to come over

0:08:49 > 0:08:53and set something up business-wise as well, and make a home here.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56The budget - a very generous budget of a million quid or so.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00I know you don't want to spend all of it but it's a nice, round figure to start with.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03- I think we'll be all right. - Looking forward to it.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05- Let's go and see what we can find then.- OK.- Great.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13'So, for their million-pound budget, Linda and Alistair are looking

0:09:13 > 0:09:18'for a truly magical character home to inspire their creativity.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20'On a practical level, it must have five bedrooms,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23'a large kitchen diner where all the family can congregate,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26'and a library or space to create one.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29'For the organic smallholding, which they do have some experience in,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32'they're looking for between five and 30 acres which,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35'even on their budget, is a big ask.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37'But we're always up for a challenge.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44'For our first property, where popping just over the border

0:09:44 > 0:09:47'into Worcestershire, to the rural hamlet of Kyre,

0:09:47 > 0:09:51'although we're not leaving Shropshire far behind - Ludlow is just 14 miles away.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54'And the countryside here is equally stunning.

0:09:54 > 0:09:59'But, for their all-important amenities, they will need to head to Tenbury Wells,

0:09:59 > 0:10:01'just 2.5 miles away.

0:10:01 > 0:10:06'Situated on the River Teme, this market town has resisted the influx of high street chains.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09'Instead, independent shops and pubs thrive,

0:10:09 > 0:10:13'and a wealth of period properties add to the old world charm.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19'But it's back to the countryside for our first viewing.

0:10:19 > 0:10:24- There we are. What do you think of all this lot? - That's rather nice.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27- It's incredible, yes. - It's a lovely setting, isn't it?

0:10:27 > 0:10:32- That is very pretty.- I know you're coming from your dream home in some respects,

0:10:32 > 0:10:34so offering you anything, it's got a lot to compete with.

0:10:34 > 0:10:39- It has, really.- It has, but this is completely different to the styles that we've got in Spain.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Very interesting, that.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46Good. All right, let's go and see what you think of the inside.

0:10:46 > 0:10:51'Originally three barns dating from the 1800s, 'the property was converted in 1981

0:10:51 > 0:10:54'to create a very spacious family home.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57'It has period features aplenty and a rather quirky lay out,

0:10:57 > 0:11:01'which I'm hoping will appeal to Linda and Alistair's artistic natures.

0:11:02 > 0:11:08- Yeah?- Very nice. I just love this brick, all the timbers.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10You can feel the character as soon as you walk in.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14- I think it's wonderful. - Good, let's continue to the kitchen. Come on through here.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Right, Linda.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23- Come on in.- Yeah, nice. Light, very light.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25Bit bigger would be good.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27THEY LAUGH

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Just thinking, all the children, all sat round.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34The great thing about this, as well as that,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38you've got your little dining area. Next door is the main dining room.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40- Right, OK.- Have a look, you can get all the kids in here.- OK.

0:11:45 > 0:11:50- There we are.- Oh, that's a good size.- That's a very good size.- Yeah.

0:11:50 > 0:11:55- I think you would get most of them in here.- Yeah!

0:11:55 > 0:12:00- Maybe even room for more.- Yes, it's very, very nice. I love the stove.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04Sat there, big roaring fire at Christmas. Keep us warm.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07You'll get used to the weather again, really.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10'I think Alastair and Linda are warming to this house,

0:12:10 > 0:12:12'but what will they make of its interesting layout?

0:12:12 > 0:12:15'On this level are two of four bedrooms,

0:12:15 > 0:12:17'one double and one single.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21'However, there's no living room down here. For that, we need to head upstairs.'

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Perhaps unusually, up here is the main living room.

0:12:25 > 0:12:30- Now, that's a surprise. Wow. - Not bad, is it?- Yeah, yeah.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31That's a surprise. I like it.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33- It's got great character.- It has.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37Everything we've seen in here so far, and the light, is just great,

0:12:37 > 0:12:38got large-sized windows.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42It's even got a bar in the corner! A small bar, but it's a bar!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45You've a little sort of terrace out there,

0:12:45 > 0:12:50which is quite interesting, so you can overlook all that you own.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52If you're going to buy a house, have one you'll remember,

0:12:52 > 0:12:57- that your friends will remember, and family.- You want a wow factor, don't you?- Yeah.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59If you think this is crazy, wait till you see the rest of it!

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Because the surprises keep coming!

0:13:01 > 0:13:06'Bedroom-wise, back across the hallway is a good sized double,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09'and the master bedroom comes complete with an en-suite.'

0:13:09 > 0:13:13- This is for you guys, I'm thinking. - Oh, very nice. Very nice.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17- Attic beams again.- It's nice, isn't it?- Yes, it is. Very nice.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21I like the idea of the terrace here, which is important, isn't it,

0:13:21 > 0:13:23on those few sunny mornings...

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- For breakfast outside! - We can go and read.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28It's not heavy, the feeling about it, is it?

0:13:28 > 0:13:31It's nice and light, and it's a good size.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35And through that door there you've got a walk-in dressing area, loads of storage.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Right. Good size.

0:13:37 > 0:13:42- So, size-wise, we're quite happy with what we've seen so far? - Yeah.- Yes, I think so.- OK.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47'That sounds promising, and there's one very special feature of this house

0:13:47 > 0:13:49'that I haven't shown Alistair and Linda yet,

0:13:49 > 0:13:50'the converted hop kiln.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54'I think I'm saving the best till last,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57'but to appreciate its full impact, let's head back downstairs.'

0:13:59 > 0:14:01How about this for a writer?

0:14:01 > 0:14:04- Oh, I say.- Come on in! What do you think?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Look at that brickwork.- Isn't it great?- Amazing.- You love brickwork.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08I do like it.

0:14:08 > 0:14:14- That is really unexpected.- Isn't it? - That is great. That is a writer's place, don't you think?

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Yes, so we're going to fight over it, are we?

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Well, fight over this, cos it goes on. Have a look up here.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Now, what would you do up here?

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- I think this would be mine.- Yeah?

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Definitely.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34I'm sorry to disillusion you, but I think I'll be writing up here.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36- No, this is a painter's studio, isn't it?- Isn't it?

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Look at the light, it's just amazing, it's beautiful.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42Fantastic views, beautiful views everywhere you look.

0:14:42 > 0:14:48- Alistair can write downstairs, I can just say, "Gin and tonic, dear."- It will be brought.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52'Well, I thought that would spark their creative impulses,

0:14:52 > 0:14:54'not to mention a healthy bit of competition.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57'But there are plenty more options outside.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00'This property also has two unconverted barns,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02'which, with the right planning permission,

0:15:02 > 0:15:05'could be converted into a painter's studio for Linda.

0:15:05 > 0:15:10'However, the outside space is a vital component to this house search,

0:15:10 > 0:15:13'so let's see if the land here will measure up for size.'

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- Now, all in all, it's probably just under two acres.- Right.- Right.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23The whole plot, the courtyard, the barns, these gardens,

0:15:23 > 0:15:27paddock beyond that post and rail, up to that, the hedge,

0:15:27 > 0:15:30and back around where the tower is.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32Right, a bit less than we wanted.

0:15:32 > 0:15:37It is less than you wanted, but it's our first property, so go with it, see what you think.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41In terms of bedrooms, there is a separate annex to this place, which has another bedroom in it.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Oh, right. Full of surprises.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47So let's have a think about the price, shall we?

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Right, Alastair?

0:15:49 > 0:15:51Come on then, Alastair!

0:15:51 > 0:15:55Well, you know, we're not that familiar with UK prices at the moment,

0:15:55 > 0:16:01but just as a wild stab at it, I would say something in the region of 800,000?

0:16:01 > 0:16:04- See, I was going to say that!- You can agree!- You can go above or below!

0:16:04 > 0:16:08No, I was going to say 800,000, I was. I'd say about that.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11This could be yours...

0:16:11 > 0:16:14- in excess of 695.- Oh.- Right.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18- That's quite encouraging.- You get a lot for your money, don't you?

0:16:18 > 0:16:22You do get an awful lot for your money. I think this is a real treat.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26- And then I could stock the bar! - Exactly! Stock the bar, exactly.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31Go and explore the annex, and a few other bits and pieces, and I'll catch up with you later.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Off you go.

0:16:33 > 0:16:38'Well, there you have it, for offers over £695,000,

0:16:38 > 0:16:40'this is amazing value for money.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42'There is work to be done converting the barns,

0:16:42 > 0:16:47'so I'm sure the £300,000 spare change will come in handy

0:16:47 > 0:16:49'and what's left over can be invested

0:16:49 > 0:16:52'in Linda and Alastair's new smallholding business.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56'It's a huge period home with four bedrooms, two reception rooms,

0:16:56 > 0:16:58'Alistair's very own writer's tower,

0:16:58 > 0:17:01'and it comes with a one-bedroom annexe.

0:17:01 > 0:17:02'At just under two acres,

0:17:02 > 0:17:05'the land isn't quite as much as they'd hoped for,

0:17:05 > 0:17:08'but will they be able to compromise on the outside space

0:17:08 > 0:17:11'for this very inspirational home?'

0:17:11 > 0:17:13That's all self-contained.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Somewhere I could go if I was banished.

0:17:16 > 0:17:17- Would I banish you?- No.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21So, kitchen, bedroom. Yeah, it's nice.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24My initial thoughts about this house are that it's really attractive.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27'Just so many nice little quirky things,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30'like the writer's tower, for example.'

0:17:30 > 0:17:33There are a few things that I think are missing

0:17:33 > 0:17:34from what we would be looking for.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37'It would be nice if it had a bit more land.'

0:17:37 > 0:17:41Well, this would be perfect for doing a vegetable and herb garden.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44I think the house is really nice, actually.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46I think it's definitely got a magical feel to it,

0:17:46 > 0:17:48'which was really important for us.'

0:17:48 > 0:17:53This certainly fills a lot of the criteria for what we're looking for, definitely.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Oh, duck. Aren't they lovely?

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Happy?- Yes, yeah, very.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Just taking it all in. - Well, the sun's still shining.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07- Let's go and see what else we can find you.- OK.- OK.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16'Leaving Spain after four years to return to Shropshire

0:18:16 > 0:18:19'will be a big lifestyle change for Linda and Alistair,

0:18:19 > 0:18:23'so, keen to get reacquainted with some of the cultural highlights,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27'they're visiting one of the region's oldest market towns, Ludlow.

0:18:27 > 0:18:34'Once described by poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman as the loveliest town in all England,

0:18:34 > 0:18:38'it's home to over 500 listed buildings, from Tudor to Georgian.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42'But perhaps the most impressive is the 11th century castle,

0:18:42 > 0:18:46'and local historian John Goode is giving them a quick tour.'

0:18:49 > 0:18:53'We're at the top of the gatehouse keep.'

0:18:53 > 0:18:56This is not only the oldest building in the castle,

0:18:56 > 0:19:00it's also the oldest building in Ludlow.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03'And in this direction is Wales,

0:19:03 > 0:19:08'and one of the reasons for the castle having been built was to keep the Welsh at bay,'

0:19:08 > 0:19:13and to make a statement that some new lords and masters were here.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18'In the early 14th century, the castle was extended

0:19:18 > 0:19:21'into a magnificent family home, and for the next 300 years

0:19:21 > 0:19:24'became a palace for many a Tudor king and queen.'

0:19:24 > 0:19:28This was a seat of government,

0:19:28 > 0:19:31because it was here that the English ruled Wales from,

0:19:31 > 0:19:34a bit of Tudor devolution, you might say.

0:19:34 > 0:19:38'Prince Arthur came to Ludlow.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41'Prince Arthur was the elder son of Henry VII,

0:19:41 > 0:19:47'and it was here that his bride, Catherine of Aragon, came.'

0:19:47 > 0:19:50Well, if it was good enough for Catherine of Aragon,

0:19:50 > 0:19:52- it's good enough for us, really. - A very good point.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56'So, plenty of inspiration on tap for our historical writer,

0:19:56 > 0:20:00'but will our next house be the perfect muse as well?

0:20:03 > 0:20:07'To make sure we're giving Alastair and Linda the full flavour of Shropshire,

0:20:07 > 0:20:12'for our next property we're heading far north to the small hamlet of Crickheath

0:20:12 > 0:20:15'on the outskirts of Oswestry, where England means Wales.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17'Slap-bang on the Welsh border,

0:20:17 > 0:20:21'Oswestry is north-west Shropshire's most vibrant market town,

0:20:21 > 0:20:26'with more than its fair share of speciality shops and eateries.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28'An important agricultural centre,

0:20:28 > 0:20:30'it should provide business opportunities

0:20:30 > 0:20:33'for Alistair and Linda's organic farming plans.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37'Our property is situated a 13 minute drive away in rural Crickheath.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40'It's a fantastically old country house

0:20:40 > 0:20:44'with all the period detailing I know Linda and Alistair love.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48'But this one also come up trumps with land, seven acres in all,

0:20:48 > 0:20:52'so it should be spot on for their new business venture.'

0:20:53 > 0:20:57- What about this one, then? - Well, that's impressive.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Some of that chimney looks like it might be original.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04Well, there's an awful lot that is original here. Some of it's about 1480.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07- Really?- Yeah. So for a man that writes books about history,

0:21:07 > 0:21:11you might have a story here, Alistair, you never know.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14Now, no surprise it's listed, as you'd probably expect,

0:21:14 > 0:21:18but it has been renovated very recently.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Not all of it, but a good proportion of it.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Right, let's go and see the inside.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25'This house has a really rich historical fabric

0:21:25 > 0:21:28'that's evolved through the 15th, 17th, 18th,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30'and now 21st century.

0:21:30 > 0:21:36'The recent renovation work has actually won architectural awards for its faithful restoration,

0:21:36 > 0:21:38'and I'm sure it will impress.'

0:21:43 > 0:21:46- Right, in you come. What do you think?- Ooh, wood floors.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Really nice.- Nice tiling.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Lots of lovely features in here, actually, and as a hallway, it's pretty impressive.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55It looks great. Yeah, I'm intrigued.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Good, right, let's continue through here.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Now, this is described as the drawing room,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04but I'd call it sitting room, lounge, living room, whatever you want.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08- Could be a library.- You can't really put books against the panels, though.

0:22:08 > 0:22:09Oh, course not, no.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12- Very, very nice fireplace. Restored, yes?- Yeah.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16The surround is new, as you can see. The back of it is not, that's original.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19I'm not picking up great vibes.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22- Not grabbing you yet? - No, it's not.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26It just hasn't got the right feel for me. It doesn't feel homely to me.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Interesting. I wonder why that is.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Let's see if we can find a bit more homeliness.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35'Well, I wasn't expecting that. I'm actually quite shocked.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37'I thought this would be right up their street,

0:22:37 > 0:22:42'so it just goes to show how difficult finding the right feel can be.

0:22:42 > 0:22:44'Not all the rooms are as austere.

0:22:44 > 0:22:50'Just next door is a reception room, which would make an ideal study or library.'

0:22:50 > 0:22:54This is the dining room, as currently displayed on the particulars.

0:22:54 > 0:22:59Well, I do like the old dado railing thing there.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03Size-wise, I think it's not bad. Again, you've got these huge floor-to-ceiling windows.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Nice, lots of light.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08I did say that at its heart, it's about 1480

0:23:08 > 0:23:11and there is a fireplace to go with it which is next door.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15Go through there, Alistair. There you go.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18- Ooh, wow!- That's a fireplace!

0:23:18 > 0:23:20It is, isn't it?

0:23:20 > 0:23:22- And then some.- That's beautiful.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25You've got so much space. If you just want a cosy room

0:23:25 > 0:23:27for everyday use, this is probably the one.

0:23:27 > 0:23:28This is it. A little snug.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Exactly. You're off the front of the property,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33privacy from round the back,

0:23:33 > 0:23:38and you're next to the kitchen, so if you want a cup of tea, follow me.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40Now then, kitchen.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42I know what you're going to say.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44- What?- Not big enough.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47It could have been I was going to say that, yeah.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50It could just do with a bit more space, I think.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54I don't think you would be able to extend, because it's listed.

0:23:54 > 0:24:00But in terms of what you do inside, in terms of refitting it,

0:24:00 > 0:24:03that's not a problem. OK. Let's have a look upstairs,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07because it does continue, and there is an awful lot of it.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10'This house doesn't seem to be filling Linda with enthusiasm

0:24:10 > 0:24:13'so let's see if we can change her mind upstairs.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16'It's very spacious, with a very homely atmosphere.'

0:24:16 > 0:24:18There we are! What do you think?

0:24:18 > 0:24:21- Well, that's what you call a good wooden floor.- Isn't it!

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Spectacular.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25That could tell a story or two, I should imagine.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27And that's lovely.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29Yeah, the fireplace there.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32'It looks like we could be winning Linda over,

0:24:32 > 0:24:36'and the further three double bedrooms definitely add to the homely feel.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38'Now none of the bedrooms are en-suite

0:24:38 > 0:24:41'but there is a good-sized family bathroom.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45'But, of course, it's five bedrooms Linda and Alastair have asked for,

0:24:45 > 0:24:48'and I may have the perfect solution up in the attic.'

0:24:48 > 0:24:50Come on up.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52Wow.

0:24:52 > 0:24:53Yeah, wow indeed.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56I'm speechless. There's a lot of space up here.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59There is. And a lot of decorating. But it would be good.

0:24:59 > 0:25:00A lot of decorating.

0:25:00 > 0:25:04You've got so much space. You've got this landing area here,

0:25:04 > 0:25:06all these gorgeous original floorboards too.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09Very, very good-sized room through there.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12This one would make a fantastic bedroom, I think.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14It's a good size, isn't it?

0:25:14 > 0:25:18How are we doing on the house? You were saying earlier on downstairs, Linda,

0:25:18 > 0:25:21that you weren't grabbed.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24I appreciate the structure and everything is beautiful,

0:25:24 > 0:25:27but I'm just not getting...

0:25:27 > 0:25:30- Feeling the love?- Yeah.- Alastair?

0:25:30 > 0:25:32I actually go with Linda on this.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35You'd imagine that a writer of historical fiction

0:25:35 > 0:25:37would just adore living in a place like this,

0:25:37 > 0:25:39but somehow I don't know...

0:25:39 > 0:25:42vibes as well. Maybe I'm getting them from Linda.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Maybe.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I'm trying not to get them. They're contagious.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Up here would be a fabulous adventure, I have to admit...

0:25:49 > 0:25:50A nice little project.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54..to do this and to make it something really special.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57'Inside may not have the right vibes,

0:25:57 > 0:26:00'but this property search isn't just about finding a home.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03'We also need lots of land for a smallholding and with seven acres,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07'this house is a really viable option, so will it sway them?'

0:26:08 > 0:26:12You get this huge swathe that goes right around us.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14You can't see all of it from here.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17It runs on beyond those trees and up to a point up there,

0:26:17 > 0:26:20including all of that meadow as well.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22- Right.- Yeah, that's good.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Now what are you thinking of doing with all of this land?

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Ooh, goats! Alpacas!

0:26:26 > 0:26:27Alpacas on there, I think.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29Chickens.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32A lot of chickens! The alpacas would love it.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35- Alpacas would be good. - Some sheep, maybe one cow.

0:26:35 > 0:26:36- A couple of pigs.- Pigs.

0:26:36 > 0:26:40OK. Right. So all in all, you've got lots of different areas,

0:26:40 > 0:26:44so loads of space, loads of storage space for feed, hay,

0:26:44 > 0:26:46bedding materials, tractors, toys!

0:26:48 > 0:26:53Exactly! So I think in terms of a modest smallholding...

0:26:53 > 0:26:55Yes, seven acres would be fine.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58- So let's have a think about the money, then.- Right.

0:26:58 > 0:26:59Shall we?

0:26:59 > 0:27:03I think I'll take a wild stab at 750,000.

0:27:03 > 0:27:07God, you keep on saying the same... I was going to say 750!

0:27:07 > 0:27:11I'm going to have to go first next time. I would have said 750.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13750?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15OK, it is more than £750,000.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17It's £825,000.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20- We weren't that far out, then. - Not far out.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22It's still technically very comfortably under budget

0:27:22 > 0:27:26and in terms of the lifestyle you're trying to embrace, you'd have space.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29- Go and have a look around. See what you think.- OK.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Off you go.

0:27:34 > 0:27:41With an asking price of £825,000, this is still £175,000 under budget

0:27:41 > 0:27:45and it's a grand period home which on paper has almost everything

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Linda and Alistair have asked for.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Four reception rooms, four bedrooms,

0:27:49 > 0:27:53but with potential to create more, and more importantly,

0:27:53 > 0:27:55it does come with seven acres of land,

0:27:55 > 0:27:57ideal for their smallholding.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00But this property search is all about instinct,

0:28:00 > 0:28:04and my gut feeling says Linda's not entirely convinced.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06It's an elusive thing, this magical factor.

0:28:06 > 0:28:12- I could do vegetables and herbs here. - Yeah. Could create a nice...

0:28:12 > 0:28:14- Or chickens! - Yeah, chickens definitely.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18I think the house is really interesting.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Not sure whether it's for us.

0:28:20 > 0:28:24I think maybe there's just a bit too much that I'd need to do

0:28:24 > 0:28:29to get it to how I could see it flowing for the family, I think.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33The house is very impressive. I absolutely love the history of it.

0:28:33 > 0:28:35I know that appeals to Linda as well.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38And the project upstairs would be amazing. But...

0:28:38 > 0:28:42I just share slightly with Linda just a little bit of an issue

0:28:42 > 0:28:45with the feel of the house, really.

0:28:45 > 0:28:46There you are, Jules.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49Sunning yourself. Making the most of it.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53Why not? It's a gorgeous day. Gorgeous house, gorgeous day.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55- Are we all done? - Yeah, I think so.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58OK. Well, what else can we find you, I wonder. Come on.

0:29:02 > 0:29:06Once Alistair and Linda make the move back to Shropshire,

0:29:06 > 0:29:08they won't have far to travel for some literary

0:29:08 > 0:29:11and artistic inspiration, because right on their doorstep

0:29:11 > 0:29:16they'll have one of the finest early medieval homes in the country.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18Stokesay Castle.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21Built 700 years ago by Laurence of Ludlow,

0:29:21 > 0:29:25it's not actually a castle, but England's oldest fortified home.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I've come to have a proper look around

0:29:28 > 0:29:29with tour guide Julie Hall.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Hi, Julie.

0:29:31 > 0:29:32Hi, Jules.

0:29:32 > 0:29:33Very nice to see you.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36Tell me a bit more about Laurence of Ludlow.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39Yes, Laurence Of Ludlow was a wealthy wool merchant

0:29:39 > 0:29:41and he was a friend of King Edward I

0:29:41 > 0:29:47and he built this place to show off his wealth, basically.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49- He did that in style. - He had a lot of money!

0:29:49 > 0:29:54It's thought construction work started here in 1281

0:29:54 > 0:29:56and was completed just ten years later.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Whilst some form of defence was considered wise

0:29:59 > 0:30:01in vulnerable border territory such as this,

0:30:01 > 0:30:05the castellation was more a fashion statement than a show of strength.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09Where Laurence was really showing off was the Great Hall.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12Wow.

0:30:12 > 0:30:13It's amazing, isn't it?

0:30:13 > 0:30:16That is absolutely fabulous, isn't it?

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Isn't the cruck roof wonderful?

0:30:19 > 0:30:22They are a real feature of this period, aren't they?

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Yeah, and it's the original roof.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29'You could say Laurence started the craze for

0:30:29 > 0:30:31'open-plan living and a love of wood,

0:30:31 > 0:30:34'because halls of this size were usually aisled off

0:30:34 > 0:30:36'with posts and pillars supporting the roof.

0:30:36 > 0:30:40'But cruck roof was at the cutting edge of carpentry innovation

0:30:40 > 0:30:43'and used curved timbers to support the whole structure,

0:30:43 > 0:30:45'enabling owners to open up spaces

0:30:45 > 0:30:48'and show off the magnitude of their buildings.'

0:30:48 > 0:30:51Give me an idea of what would have gone on in here.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53He would have entertained.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56The servants would have probably slept here at night.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59He did actually have glass in those windows.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01He was so rich, he had glass.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04And up there, if you just look across there, there's the peepholes.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06These two little square windows?

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Yes, the room there was the solar and that's where the family ate,

0:31:09 > 0:31:11looking down on their minions.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14It's that classic medieval structure.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16God at the top, then the king, then the Lords

0:31:16 > 0:31:19and then the rest of us, you and me, down here.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21Absolutely.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25For the next 400 years, the house changed little,

0:31:25 > 0:31:27until it was purchased in 1620

0:31:27 > 0:31:31by the Lord Mayor of London's son, William Craven.

0:31:31 > 0:31:35Like so many homebuyers, he was keen to put his own stamp on the place.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38That too has left a legacy of historic architecture,

0:31:38 > 0:31:42from the Jacobean panelling in the family living quarters

0:31:42 > 0:31:45to the highly decorative timber-frame gatehouse.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48But an Englishman's home is his castle,

0:31:48 > 0:31:51so I went to check out the keep.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54- These are narrow.- Very.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57I wouldn't want to do this in a suit of armour.

0:31:57 > 0:31:58OK there, Jules?

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Now, this is impressive, isn't it?

0:32:00 > 0:32:03This is the top floor of the keep.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05What do we think would have happened up here?

0:32:05 > 0:32:09We think it was either for guests to sleep in, or maybe retainers

0:32:09 > 0:32:12to the castle, or maybe garrisoned.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14- Not a bad guest room.- No!

0:32:14 > 0:32:15Is it en-suite?

0:32:15 > 0:32:18Yes, there's a little place there.

0:32:18 > 0:32:19Brilliant.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23'This really is history told through the fabric of a building.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26'And I have to say, if this doesn't inspire Alastair's next novel,

0:32:26 > 0:32:28'then I don't know what will.'

0:32:30 > 0:32:34'So with the sun setting over the stunning Shropshire countryside,

0:32:34 > 0:32:37'our creative couple have their first chance

0:32:37 > 0:32:39'to mull over today's properties,

0:32:39 > 0:32:42'but will they have been inspired?'

0:32:42 > 0:32:44So, what did you think of the barn conversion?

0:32:44 > 0:32:47I liked it. There was lots of it I really liked.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50I thought it had a great appearance when you approached it.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53It was quite perfect, really, the outside, wasn't it?

0:32:53 > 0:32:57- Yes, I loved the writer's tower. - Well, painter's tower.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59It was so unusual.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Those views, the light.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05Maybe not quite as much garden for me to do, plants-wise.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08- We wouldn't be able to have animals there, really.- Not many.

0:33:08 > 0:33:12The Tudor house inside was full of so much history.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15Mmm, those floors, the fireplaces.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18Fireplaces in different rooms upstairs as well.

0:33:18 > 0:33:19It had a good acreage.

0:33:19 > 0:33:24Yes, the grounds, the land was really nice.

0:33:24 > 0:33:25But I think there's a down-side.

0:33:25 > 0:33:29Yeah, I just didn't quite feel the magical bit for me.

0:33:29 > 0:33:33Today has shown me what a brilliant place Ludlow is.

0:33:33 > 0:33:38- Yes, the location I think is going to be priority.- Yeah.

0:33:38 > 0:33:42- Maybe less land, for location. - Possibly. Yeah.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45Let's go forward. We'll find it.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Yeah, absolutely.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54Alistair and Linda want to swap Spain for Shropshire

0:33:54 > 0:33:57so they can be close to their children.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59For a huge budget of £1 million,

0:33:59 > 0:34:02they're looking for a big country home with a magical feel,

0:34:02 > 0:34:05which so far has been difficult to nail.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08Can we cast the right spell with our next property?

0:34:08 > 0:34:09It's moved me.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13And today's mystery house is a real challenge,

0:34:13 > 0:34:15but will it be the business?

0:34:15 > 0:34:18A bit more than a smallholding - that is a farm!

0:34:20 > 0:34:22You know, the thing I love about Shropshire

0:34:22 > 0:34:26is that around every corner there is something pretty to look at.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28But it's not all about views.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30We are of course here for a very important reason

0:34:30 > 0:34:33and that is to try and find two very discerning buyers

0:34:33 > 0:34:36a house with the all-important feel-good factor.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39It is an elusive thing, but we have two more houses to go,

0:34:39 > 0:34:41including of course the mystery house.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44Can we find it? I think we can.

0:34:46 > 0:34:52How are the properties matching up to what you have been hoping for?

0:34:52 > 0:34:55I haven't seen the dream house yet.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58I haven't felt the right vibes yet.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00Let's explore this business of feeling.

0:35:00 > 0:35:04- It's hard to define in some ways, isn't it?- It's an emotion, isn't it?

0:35:04 > 0:35:06It's hard to describe it,

0:35:06 > 0:35:10to put your finger on what creates that because it's probably different with every person.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13So you can only go by

0:35:13 > 0:35:16your gut instinct, I think, when you go somewhere.

0:35:16 > 0:35:23- I suppose the key thing is that you know you will recognise it when you feel it.- Definitely.

0:35:23 > 0:35:25We've just got to find it.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28- Well, that's the rub, isn't it?- Yes.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31- We've got to find that magic feeling.- It could be difficult.

0:35:31 > 0:35:34It could be, but there again, we might just get there.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36You sound very optimistic.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42I'm feeling quietly confident about our first house of the day.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45It's situated in the small rural hamlet of Richards Castle.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48However, it's just four miles from historic Ludlow.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51Having revisited this exceptional market town,

0:35:51 > 0:35:55Linda and Alastair have realised it's the place they want to be.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58Not only is it close to most of their children,

0:35:58 > 0:36:01but as the gastronomic capital of Shropshire

0:36:01 > 0:36:04with its thriving farmers' market, food and drink festival

0:36:04 > 0:36:10and abundance of speciality shops, it holds plenty in the way of business potential, too.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15Let's have a look at this one and see what kind of feelings you get.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17Oh...

0:36:17 > 0:36:21That was built before they had spirit levels, wasn't it?

0:36:21 > 0:36:25It certainly was, but it is absolutely gorgeous.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27- That is...- Fabulous.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30That takes your breath away.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Love it, love it, love it.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34It looks like a dream property.

0:36:34 > 0:36:38Let's see if it will fit your dream, shall we? Come on.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41That's the kind of reaction I've been looking for

0:36:41 > 0:36:45and I have very high hopes for this Tudor, grade-two listed farmhouse.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49We'd be hard-pushed to find a home with more character

0:36:49 > 0:36:52and I have a sneaking suspicion

0:36:52 > 0:36:54it might just have the magic Linda is looking for.

0:36:54 > 0:36:58We are going in through the side door and starting with the kitchen

0:36:58 > 0:37:01because I think it has what it takes to impress.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04Kitchen wise, what do you think Linda?

0:37:05 > 0:37:10- Ah-ha!- Spot on.- Yes? - Plenty of room, yeah.- Yes.

0:37:10 > 0:37:14- And a range.- Yes, that's very lovely, isn't it?

0:37:14 > 0:37:18When you walk in, you can just feel, it feels so homely.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21It's got a great feel about it.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25In terms of kitchen, it does go on a bit because we've got this...

0:37:25 > 0:37:27little dining area here

0:37:27 > 0:37:31- which isn't your dining room. - This is exactly what I wanted -

0:37:31 > 0:37:35- kitchen, separate area. - Beautiful.- I want it!

0:37:37 > 0:37:41- Right, mate, you know what to do.- More to see. - Follow me through here.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44'Great, I think Linda's already moved in.'

0:37:47 > 0:37:49The dining room.

0:37:54 > 0:37:58- Are you a bit lost for words? - Yes, I am, it has moved me.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00Moved is good, moved is what we want.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03In terms of that feeling...

0:38:03 > 0:38:05- It's got it, hasn't it?- What is it?

0:38:05 > 0:38:08It's just got that feeling of a home, it doesn't matter what the size

0:38:08 > 0:38:12of a property is, if it hasn't got the feeling and the right vibes...

0:38:12 > 0:38:14- It's just so important to me. - Alastair?

0:38:14 > 0:38:18To me, it has a nautical feel to it.

0:38:18 > 0:38:24When you look at the angles and the shape of the room, it could almost be a captain's cabin.

0:38:24 > 0:38:29OK, it's not rocking or anything, but it's enclosed and cosy and...

0:38:29 > 0:38:32- Good. Want to see some more?- Yes.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35'Even Alastair is waxing lyrical.'

0:38:35 > 0:38:38It looks like this room could inspire a novel or two

0:38:38 > 0:38:43and there's plenty more to get the creative juices flowing across the hallway.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46Here we are, your principal living room, effectively.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49- Another gorgeous room. - Another perfect room.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51And look at the fireplace.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53Beautiful.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56You could be forgiven for thinking you were in a castle.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58It's just an amazing house.

0:38:58 > 0:39:04Everywhere you look, you can't find anything you could fault, really.

0:39:04 > 0:39:09- You just think, I love it!- Bingo!

0:39:09 > 0:39:13And even better, just next door is a study

0:39:13 > 0:39:17which could be the perfect resting place for Linda's beloved books.

0:39:17 > 0:39:21So it is safe to say that downstairs is a resounding success.

0:39:21 > 0:39:25Let's see if upstairs will get an equally effusive response.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27The master bedroom, come on in here.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- Oh!- Yes?- Yes, it's lovely.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34How is the history vibe going, Alastair?

0:39:34 > 0:39:36It's going! It's ticking, yes.

0:39:38 > 0:39:42A real taste of Elizabethan grandeur.

0:39:42 > 0:39:48It's absolutely gorgeous. En suite, go and check that out, I think you'll love it.

0:39:51 > 0:39:56- There we are! - It's great. Isn't it a good size?

0:39:56 > 0:40:00A brilliant size, loads of light, all the storage you need in these cupboards.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02I love it, nice and light.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06- Good. Yeah?- We're onto a winner by the looks of it!

0:40:06 > 0:40:09I think we are! Good, I'm glad to hear it.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13Music to my ears, but I do have an admission.

0:40:13 > 0:40:18There are just two further bedrooms up here, although both are doubles but there is a solution outside.

0:40:18 > 0:40:23The Old Granary has been converted into a self-contained annex

0:40:23 > 0:40:26with a kitchen, living room and two further bedrooms.

0:40:26 > 0:40:30That makes five and that's not it by a long shot.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32OK, I'm thinking,

0:40:32 > 0:40:40- studio, office, writing. - Oh, yes, art studio, it would be fantastic for it.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42Yes, I could even write in here, is there room for me?

0:40:42 > 0:40:44You're in the other room, I'm in here.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47- It's all getting very territorial already.- It is.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50Lots of options. A fantastic space.

0:40:50 > 0:40:54Let's get on with that garden, we can't put it off any longer.

0:40:56 > 0:41:01Now so far, Linda and Alastair haven't found any negatives with this property which is fine by me.

0:41:03 > 0:41:08However, at 2.5 acres, the outside space isn't as much as they were hoping for

0:41:08 > 0:41:12so can they compromise on land for a house that obviously has it all?

0:41:12 > 0:41:14Look at this!

0:41:14 > 0:41:19Oh! This is like everything we put on the list.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22- And more, I suspect. - COCKEREL CROWS

0:41:22 > 0:41:28This has to be the noisiest and tidiest chicken run and veg patch I've seen.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30With roses!

0:41:30 > 0:41:33In terms of land, you also get that meadow.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35Oh, really?

0:41:35 > 0:41:36It has just been cut for hay.

0:41:36 > 0:41:42You get this, the plot around the house, all in, it's about 2.5 acres.

0:41:42 > 0:41:46- That's a nice size.- It's not the five acres you asked for.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48Well, we'll leave the alpacas out.

0:41:48 > 0:41:53So, suddenly, they're out the window! OK. All right. Good.

0:41:53 > 0:41:57Let's go back to the main lawn and have a look at the house

0:41:57 > 0:42:00in the setting of this glorious garden and talk about the money.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02OK.

0:42:04 > 0:42:09'So, there's no question the house and gardens are working for them, but will the price?'

0:42:09 > 0:42:13Let's finish off our garden tour here on the main lawn.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17What a way to see this property, it is stunning, isn't it?

0:42:17 > 0:42:18Words don't describe it, do they?

0:42:18 > 0:42:25No, it is so unusual to come across something like this, with all this.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27It's just a beautiful home.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29And I'm completely lost for words.

0:42:29 > 0:42:34I think we all are, to be honest with you, we're all taken aback at it.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37Let's get down to the slightly mucky discussion about the money.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41- Go on, Linda. - I would say around £900,000.

0:42:41 > 0:42:46Probably about £925,000, or something like that.

0:42:46 > 0:42:50This is on the market for £900,000.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52Where's the cheque book?

0:42:52 > 0:42:54Go and enjoy it,

0:42:54 > 0:42:57plan your future here.

0:42:57 > 0:43:02I suspect that's what you going to be doing. Off you go, I'll catch you later.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05We are all a bit moved by this, I have to say.

0:43:05 > 0:43:07Certainly Linda and Alastair are.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09It is an absolutely gorgeous property.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11I have a slight confession to make,

0:43:11 > 0:43:14over the years, I've probably lost count of all the houses I've shown

0:43:14 > 0:43:18on Escape To The Country, but this is one I will never forget.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21It is quite simply remarkable.

0:43:21 > 0:43:27At £900,000, this extraordinary home is £100,000 under budget

0:43:27 > 0:43:30and they could move in straight away without lifting a finger.

0:43:30 > 0:43:35It has Linda's longed for kitchen/diner, two reception rooms and a study.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38With three bedrooms in the house plus two more in the annex,

0:43:38 > 0:43:41there is plenty of space for visiting children.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44The 2.5-acre grounds are simply stunning

0:43:44 > 0:43:46and it sounds like Linda and Alastair

0:43:46 > 0:43:49can compromise on acreage for a truly magical house.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51That's neat, isn't it?

0:43:51 > 0:43:56It's nice, you've got a fire, it looks like it works and French doors going out.

0:43:56 > 0:43:59This would be great for the children, wouldn't it?

0:43:59 > 0:44:01It's pretty near perfect.

0:44:01 > 0:44:06All the things I would have imagined and visualised, it's more or less here.

0:44:06 > 0:44:11I have used the word magical quite a few times, but this must be it.

0:44:11 > 0:44:14- Can you smell... What's that?- Thyme.

0:44:14 > 0:44:19The house itself... Immaculate in the sense that it's not straight.

0:44:19 > 0:44:21I think that's just superb.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25It's got a wonderful atmosphere, a great feel to it.

0:44:25 > 0:44:30I know that Linda is totally taken with this house and to be honest, so am I.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33It has taken a lot of will power to make myself believe

0:44:33 > 0:44:37that I personally could move from our paradise in Spain.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40Um... This house does it, it really does.

0:44:40 > 0:44:44Here we all are exploring the garden!

0:44:44 > 0:44:46I'm tempted to say, have you seen enough,

0:44:46 > 0:44:49- but there is so much to take in. - It would be nice to stay for a bit longer.

0:44:49 > 0:44:53I don't know about you two, I don't want to leave, but leave we must, I'm afraid.

0:44:53 > 0:44:55This way.

0:45:00 > 0:45:05Well, it's mystery house time and the mystery house in question

0:45:05 > 0:45:08is right down there at the bottom of that valley.

0:45:08 > 0:45:11To be honest, even by our standards, the mystery house

0:45:11 > 0:45:14is going to have to go some way into changing my buyers' minds.

0:45:14 > 0:45:16I think they've already made them up,

0:45:16 > 0:45:21but it wouldn't be the first time we've thrown a cat among the pigeons at the 11th hour.

0:45:21 > 0:45:23So, let's go and see what they make of it.

0:45:25 > 0:45:28We're not straying too far from Ludlow,

0:45:28 > 0:45:30just 13 miles west to the village of Bucknell.

0:45:30 > 0:45:37Set in an idyllic pastoral landscape, this medieval village is about as lovely as they come.

0:45:37 > 0:45:43Tudor timber-framed houses and a 13th-century church should provide inspiration for Alastair,

0:45:43 > 0:45:49and amenities come in the way of a butcher, a village shop and one pub.

0:45:49 > 0:45:54The mystery house is set in a wonderful rural landscape, but it will be a huge project,

0:45:54 > 0:45:57as this 17th-century thatch is only partly renovated.

0:45:58 > 0:46:04Linda and Alastair don't mind some work, but they haven't considered taking on such a big challenge.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07'Will they be up to the job? Let's find out.'

0:46:09 > 0:46:11Let's have a look at this one.

0:46:13 > 0:46:18The final property, our mystery house.

0:46:18 > 0:46:22- Pretty.- Very pretty. Great spot.

0:46:22 > 0:46:28If you'd come here six or seven years ago, you'd have seen a very run down cottage with a tin roof.

0:46:28 > 0:46:31Completely derelict. A lot of the work has been done,

0:46:31 > 0:46:35but it's not finished. It's completely empty inside.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38No kitchen, no nothing.

0:46:39 > 0:46:44It's absolutely about you putting your own stamp on it, OK?

0:46:44 > 0:46:51You get, not just that, but a huge barn, which in itself would make a fantastic family home.

0:46:51 > 0:46:54It'd be interesting to see the potential of what you could do.

0:46:54 > 0:46:56Come and have a look.

0:46:56 > 0:47:00'This farmhouse is full of beautifully restored character features,

0:47:00 > 0:47:06'but it's a completely blank canvass, so Linda and Alastair will need to pull their creative vision

0:47:06 > 0:47:08'and get their imaginations in gear.

0:47:08 > 0:47:11'We're starting off in the first reception room.'

0:47:11 > 0:47:19In many ways, the first exciting thing about seeing a building in this...state of renovation

0:47:19 > 0:47:23- is the rooms are whatever you want them to be. - You can use your imagination.

0:47:23 > 0:47:28They're all a good size. Lots of wood burners dotted around as well.

0:47:28 > 0:47:30- It's very nice.- Interesting?

0:47:30 > 0:47:35This is such a rare opportunity to create a home exactly to their spec,

0:47:35 > 0:47:39and with a further two reception rooms,

0:47:39 > 0:47:42it has the same amount of space as the previous house that they loved.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45What would you do with this?

0:47:47 > 0:47:48Hmm-mm.

0:47:48 > 0:47:52This is the kitchen. I'll tell you why, because...

0:47:52 > 0:48:00- here is the inlet for a gorgeous cast-iron range cooker.- Right.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Great floor.

0:48:02 > 0:48:09- I'd imagine you'd go out of those doors and have a nice outdoor... - The view is excellent.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13- We could have a nice terrace outside.- Kitchen garden.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16God. Have to be busy, wouldn't we?

0:48:17 > 0:48:20The herbs could be growing right out here.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22What a view. It's all there.

0:48:22 > 0:48:25- Interesting?- Interesting.

0:48:25 > 0:48:28Let's go check out the staircase cos it's even more interesting up here.

0:48:28 > 0:48:33'There may still be a bit to do, but most of the hard work has been done.'

0:48:33 > 0:48:35What do you think of that?

0:48:35 > 0:48:40- Oh.- Gosh.- This looks intriguing.

0:48:40 > 0:48:42That's...what kind of architecture?

0:48:42 > 0:48:49In medieval terms, it's a cruck frame - one of the earliest forms of roof support.

0:48:49 > 0:48:55Classically medieval. This is doing it's best to look original. But it's not.

0:48:55 > 0:48:58But it fits in perfectly with this property.

0:48:58 > 0:48:59Looks splendid, though.

0:48:59 > 0:49:04It's a very imposing statement and quite a bold thing to do.

0:49:04 > 0:49:10I think it goes to the heart of what the renovators were trying to achieve with it.

0:49:10 > 0:49:14This is technically a third bedroom. OK?

0:49:14 > 0:49:17- Is this the master bedroom?- Well...

0:49:17 > 0:49:22it has an en suite through there. I think it's a bit wasted as a master bedroom.

0:49:22 > 0:49:25You could use it as a lounge, couldn't you? I like it.

0:49:25 > 0:49:30- Again, food for thought, really. - Lots of food for thought!

0:49:30 > 0:49:37The rest of this floor consists of three much smaller rooms designed as bedrooms and a family bathroom.

0:49:37 > 0:49:41Finding that elusive fifth bedroom has been tricky in this house search,

0:49:41 > 0:49:44'but as always, we have a solution, and this one is very impressive.

0:49:44 > 0:49:49'The barn outside has planning permission in place to be turned into an eight-bedroom annexe.

0:49:49 > 0:49:53'Of course, Linda and Alastair could tear up the plans completely

0:49:53 > 0:49:55'and re-apply with their own ideas.'

0:49:57 > 0:50:02In terms of buildings, I think this is where we need to stretch our minds a little.

0:50:02 > 0:50:07This in itself would make a handsome barn conversion and a big family home.

0:50:07 > 0:50:11But let's turn our attention to the outside space,

0:50:11 > 0:50:18as with a massive 15 acres, this has the best smallholding potential of all the properties we've seen.

0:50:18 > 0:50:23Right, well, let's... Let's think about this land.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26We're pretty much in the middle of it. The house is behind those trees.

0:50:26 > 0:50:31So you get that field, that paddock down there, down to the river,

0:50:31 > 0:50:35the one beyond me over there and all of that up there.

0:50:35 > 0:50:40- That's a lot of land.- Bit more than a smallholding. It's a farm, isn't it?

0:50:40 > 0:50:44It's nice the way it's all linked. You're not going through gates across something else.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47It's joined up nicely. And there's a river at the bottom.

0:50:47 > 0:50:52Yes, and you own half of that. That meanders along the lower border of the property.

0:50:52 > 0:50:56- Let's have a think. Our final price guess. - SHE SIGHS

0:50:56 > 0:50:59- Go on. Alastair, you go first. - I'll go first? OK.

0:50:59 > 0:51:02I would say...£650,000.

0:51:02 > 0:51:04£650,000.

0:51:04 > 0:51:06I'd go £600,000.

0:51:06 > 0:51:11That's even more optimistic! You're both way off, I'm afraid.

0:51:11 > 0:51:16The mystery house is on the market for £750,000.

0:51:16 > 0:51:22- Is it for you? I wonder. Go have a look.- OK.- I'll see you later.

0:51:24 > 0:51:29At £750,000, this is a massive £250,000 under their budget,

0:51:29 > 0:51:34so plenty of spare change to finish the house and convert the barn.

0:51:34 > 0:51:38And what a character home Linda and Alastair could end up with.

0:51:38 > 0:51:39It has...

0:51:42 > 0:51:48And with 15 acres of land, it has enormous rural business potential.

0:51:48 > 0:51:50But the million pound question -

0:51:50 > 0:51:52will they want to tackle such a big project?

0:51:52 > 0:51:56The surroundings of the mystery house are absolutely gorgeous,

0:51:56 > 0:52:02rural and plenty of room for livestock of any description.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07The river is exciting too, with the fishing and so on.

0:52:07 > 0:52:12I think it has great potential, but maybe just bit too much work for us.

0:52:12 > 0:52:15It's not just a house. There's the house,

0:52:15 > 0:52:22the outbuilding, create a garden, do a courtyard and manage the land.

0:52:22 > 0:52:27- Well. Well, you may say well. - There was a lot to see.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30A lot for you think about now, I suspect.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33It brings me out in a bit of a sweat thinking about all that work.

0:52:33 > 0:52:36We've given you plenty to think about over the last couple of days,

0:52:36 > 0:52:39so let's get you somewhere where you can mull it all over,

0:52:39 > 0:52:42then I shall see if you've made your minds up. Come on.

0:52:46 > 0:52:50I think it's safe to say there's a clear front runner in this property search,

0:52:50 > 0:52:55but will it still come out on top after they've had a chance to discuss everything they've seen?

0:52:55 > 0:52:56Let's find out.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03- Hello, there.- Hi.- Hi.- Now then...

0:53:05 > 0:53:08- You look tired. - Absolutely shattered.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12- But very happy.- Good. Has it all been worthwhile?

0:53:12 > 0:53:15Yes, it has. It's been very interesting.

0:53:15 > 0:53:19Let's think about where it all started with the huge converted barn

0:53:19 > 0:53:23- with the tower study and studio. - The writer's tower.

0:53:23 > 0:53:25The writer's tower and all that.

0:53:25 > 0:53:31That was very magical. You approached it, you saw that pond, ducks, weeping willow...

0:53:31 > 0:53:34It was beautiful - the old barn, the building,

0:53:34 > 0:53:40- the bricks. It was very attractive. I liked that. - What about the writer's tower?

0:53:40 > 0:53:44Yeah, I could see myself sitting up there with lots of reference books

0:53:44 > 0:53:50in that nice area below, whiling away the days writing page after page.

0:53:50 > 0:53:56I'm so glad you feel like that. I think I'll be painting.

0:53:56 > 0:53:59The light would be great for painting up there. It was very different.

0:53:59 > 0:54:03Then we took you to a gorgeous late-15th-century building.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07It was. I mean, the history and what was in there -

0:54:07 > 0:54:11the floors, the wood panelling - that was amazing.

0:54:11 > 0:54:16- The vibes wasn't right for me. - The business of feeling was emerging, wasn't it?

0:54:16 > 0:54:17I think it was, yes

0:54:17 > 0:54:21And if the vibes aren't right for Linda, they sure ain't right for me.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24There's a man who knows which side his bread is buttered.

0:54:24 > 0:54:31We then had time to sleep on it all and we woke you up and took you out for your final day's house hunting

0:54:31 > 0:54:34to a property which...

0:54:34 > 0:54:40absolutely took my breath away. A house with a garden.

0:54:40 > 0:54:45- What happened there?- Amazing. Like a dream property. It had everything.

0:54:45 > 0:54:51It's the house, the gardens, vegetables, poultry, stream...

0:54:51 > 0:54:53For both of us, it was almost an epiphany.

0:54:53 > 0:54:56Last but not least, it was time for the mystery house

0:54:56 > 0:55:01which I think was a very viable property for you to think about. What did you think?

0:55:01 > 0:55:05It was an excellent mystery house.

0:55:05 > 0:55:10We're not afraid of hard work. But possibly JUST a bit too much.

0:55:10 > 0:55:17With the house, the barn, the land, no garden, so that would have to be created,

0:55:17 > 0:55:22you had numerous projects there. It wasn't just the house.

0:55:22 > 0:55:26I think it might have been too overwhelming.

0:55:26 > 0:55:32We gave you the spectrum. You tell me. What happens next?

0:55:32 > 0:55:37- Well, we'd like to see the house with the garden again.- I thought so.

0:55:37 > 0:55:39THEY LAUGH

0:55:39 > 0:55:42The most expensive! She's that kind of girl.

0:55:42 > 0:55:43I'm not cheap.

0:55:43 > 0:55:51We'd like to go see that again and see how everything goes and hopefully take it further.

0:55:51 > 0:55:55Let us know how you get on. When you move in I want to come back and see it.

0:55:55 > 0:55:56And that garden.

0:56:01 > 0:56:05I do love it here. For me, Shropshire is a real hidden gem.

0:56:05 > 0:56:09But the reason I think we've been successful isn't just because it's beautiful,

0:56:09 > 0:56:14but because we have found an elusive and intoxicating cocktail of factors

0:56:14 > 0:56:18that have all combined to give us overall success.

0:56:18 > 0:56:23They are - the right area, the right budget, the right buyers and the right property,

0:56:23 > 0:56:27but also something else, something far more elusive still -

0:56:27 > 0:56:30a property with, as Linda would say, the right feel.

0:56:30 > 0:56:34In my experience, when something feels right, it generally is right.

0:56:34 > 0:56:35I'll see you next time.

0:56:37 > 0:56:41I'm delighted to report that Alastair and Linda have made an offer on the Tudor house,

0:56:41 > 0:56:44but it's conditional on the sale of their home in Spain.

0:56:44 > 0:56:49Let's hope their villa finds a buyer soon so they can start living their Shropshire dream.

0:56:49 > 0:56:51If you'd like to escape to the country

0:56:51 > 0:56:54and would like our help, please, apply online...
