0:00:02 > 0:00:05Legend has it these stones are all that remains of a witches' coven.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09They also form the second-largest stone circle in Britain.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Find out where I am in just a moment.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45In today's show, I'll be helping a couple desperate for the outdoors life

0:00:45 > 0:00:48find their first home together in the country.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52However, they're keeping their cards close to their chest.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53I don't what know what to say.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56You're quite hard to read. You have this poker face!

0:00:56 > 0:01:00But maybe our mystery house will force them to open up a bit.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It's quite romantic.

0:01:07 > 0:01:12Welcome to Cumbria, a county filled with mountains, poets,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15and this stone circle, known as Long Meg.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Meg, which is this one, was claimed to be a witch

0:01:17 > 0:01:21and she and her many daughters were turned into rocks.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25This stone circle, it's said, is protected by magic.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27It's impossible to go around it

0:01:27 > 0:01:30and count the same number of stones twice.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34So while I test that theory, you take a look at the rest of the county.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37One, two, three, four, five...

0:01:38 > 0:01:41As the most north-westerly of England's counties,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Cumbria's charms are countless,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48many of them lying within the Lake District National Park.

0:01:48 > 0:01:53Among the 16 lakes scattered across the county's dramatic and mountainous terrain

0:01:53 > 0:01:57is Windermere, which, at ten and a half miles long and a mile wide

0:01:57 > 0:02:01claims the title of England's largest natural lake.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05Its scenic splendour is a draw for over 8 million visitors a year,

0:02:05 > 0:02:10many who come to enjoy the raft of outdoor pursuits this area lends itself to.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14The outlying fells and villages beyond the National Park

0:02:14 > 0:02:19are also a compelling option for many people seeking a home here.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52In fact, in some parts of the Lake District, Coniston, for example,

0:02:52 > 0:02:5651% of the property belongs to second-home owners.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59But if you ARE looking to move to the area,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02there are properties to suit every budget.

0:03:02 > 0:03:08For £260,000, this three-bedroom stone barn conversion outside Wigton

0:03:08 > 0:03:10provides a generous open-plan kitchen diner

0:03:10 > 0:03:13and bedrooms with impressive roof beams.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Outside, the garden has views over the adjoining fields.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Or how about this four-bedroom barn conversion near Foxfield

0:03:21 > 0:03:23for £420,000?

0:03:23 > 0:03:27It has a state-of-the-art kitchen-diner, a lovely garden

0:03:27 > 0:03:30and a roof terrace which offers stunning views

0:03:30 > 0:03:32towards Kirkby Moor and the local woodland.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35For larger budgets,

0:03:35 > 0:03:40£675,000 could buy you this four-bedroom farmhouse in Alston.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43It has a light, airy feel with wooden truss ceilings

0:03:43 > 0:03:46a running theme throughout the main house.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Our house-buyers are desperate to leave their town life behind

0:03:52 > 0:03:55and move into the glories of the countryside,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58so let's find out why they want to make their escape to Cumbria.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Lesley, a retail manager, and Carl, a school teacher,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05have lived together in their three-bedroom home

0:04:05 > 0:04:08in the suburbs of northern Blackpool for two years.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12But since becoming a couple, they both want to head out of town

0:04:12 > 0:04:16and pursue a more active lifestyle in the Cumbrian countryside.

0:04:16 > 0:04:22We both want to move to the country. I think we like the outdoor lifestyle

0:04:22 > 0:04:27and the accessibility to the countryside, basically.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31This'll be our first property that we'll have bought together,

0:04:31 > 0:04:35and that's one of our main reasons. We want to be quite rural

0:04:35 > 0:04:38and have the ideal that we've always wanted.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41One of my interests is cycling. Lesley and I used to do quite a lot.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45Unfortunately, the traffic around here is just ridiculous.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50The chance to go out and cycle in the countryside

0:04:50 > 0:04:52is something we're looking forward to.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Becoming a fully fledged gardener

0:04:55 > 0:04:58is part of Lesley's outdoor ambition.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02As you can see, this is my little vegetable patch and it is very small.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06At the moment, all we can really grow are strawberries and raspberries,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09and when we move to the country, what we'd really like to do

0:05:09 > 0:05:12is grow a greater variety of fruit and vegetables.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Whilst striving to fulfil their rural dream, they also realise

0:05:17 > 0:05:21that initially they'll have to commute back to Blackpool for work.

0:05:21 > 0:05:22Because of this,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25they want to settle in the Kendal area with easy access to the M6,

0:05:25 > 0:05:30and besides being insistent that their next home should be detached,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32there are other priorities to factor in.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35For me, I'd like the new house to be pretty much

0:05:35 > 0:05:39everything that this place isn't, to be honest.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42The main thing for me is location.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47It would be wonderful to see some scenery, wildlife, et cetera.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49The property itself,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52I don't mind whether it's an older property

0:05:52 > 0:05:54or whether it's a newer build,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57but I would prefer it to have some character features.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00So I would like a nice, unusual fireplace

0:06:00 > 0:06:06or it to have character inside. Ideally, I'd love a big kitchen.

0:06:06 > 0:06:07Two bedrooms would be fine.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Ideally, we need somewhere that could be a studio,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15so that might be some outbuildings that come along with the property.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16It's more about the location.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20I'd prefer it to be a bit more out on its own, whereas Lesley

0:06:20 > 0:06:25would probably prefer to be a bit closer or actually in a community.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Lesley sold her property two years ago,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32and with Carl's on the market for £145,000,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34they've agreed their top limit.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37The maximum budget we're looking to spend

0:06:37 > 0:06:39would be around the £300,000 mark.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49I know we always say that it's going to be challenge to find

0:06:49 > 0:06:52what our homebuyers want, but in Carl and Lesley's case,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55there are some specific factors that could trip us up.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Firstly, their budget's not the biggest.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02Secondly, everybody wants to move to this beautiful corner of the countryside,

0:07:02 > 0:07:06and thirdly, local occupancy restrictions really do limit

0:07:06 > 0:07:10the number of properties that incomers like Carl and Lesley can buy.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14The good news is, here on Escape, we love a challenge.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20At their request, we'll be focussing Carl and Lesley's property search

0:07:20 > 0:07:23in the Kendal area, although their budget may mean

0:07:23 > 0:07:27we have to push the boundaries to get them what they want.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31We've selected three handsome Cumbrian homes to tempt them with,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35but I won't be revealing the price of each until they've had a guess.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37The last property is our mystery house

0:07:37 > 0:07:40which we hope will push them beyond their comfort zone.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Welcome to Cumbria.- Thank you. - Where the sun is always like this.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51- It never, ever rains. - Glorious, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54I can understand why you want to move here.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Has it always been your destination of choice? Why here?

0:07:57 > 0:08:01We had a conversation a while back and we decided

0:08:01 > 0:08:05we only ever wanted to move one more time, so we actually made a list.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08We did it separately to make sure it wasn't one person's choice

0:08:08 > 0:08:11over the other, of places where we really want to live,

0:08:11 > 0:08:12and top of our list was the Lake District.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16- That's nice. - So it made sense, basically.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18It sounds like you have perfect unison

0:08:18 > 0:08:20when it comes to where you want to live.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24What about the kind of property? Do you have the same taste there?

0:08:24 > 0:08:30I think Carl is definitely more to do with the location of the property.

0:08:30 > 0:08:35These views are amazing and that's what we're moving here for.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38I'm probably more to do with the interior of the house,

0:08:38 > 0:08:40whereas Carl is more to do with the exterior.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45- Your budget is 300.- Correct, yes. - Fixed in stone.

0:08:45 > 0:08:50- The top of our budget. - Because you have sold your property and yours is in the market.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54It's on the market at the moment, and we're also looking to let,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57so we're ready to go, basically.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01We have found some lovely properties to show you, so let's start looking.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Happily, with their budget of £300,000,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Lesley and Carl have realistic expectations,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13but ideally they are after a detached property that provides them

0:09:13 > 0:09:18with a living room, preferably with a lovely period fireplace,

0:09:18 > 0:09:22a large kitchen-diner, a minimum of two bedrooms,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25space for Carl's studio

0:09:25 > 0:09:28along with a good-sized garden for Lesley to grow vegetables

0:09:28 > 0:09:31and countryside views are a must.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38We're getting our property search under way with location

0:09:38 > 0:09:42at the top of the agenda as we head to the village of Brigsteer.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45With all the amenities of Kendal just three miles away,

0:09:45 > 0:09:49this is a superbly rural spot with a well-regarded pub,

0:09:49 > 0:09:53a small parish church and a scattering of properties

0:09:53 > 0:09:55which enjoy views over the Lyth Valley,

0:09:55 > 0:09:58and our first house is no exception.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03So this is the spot I wanted to bring you to.

0:10:03 > 0:10:08- And this is the property I want to show you.- Excellent.

0:10:08 > 0:10:14First impressions? Yours, because you were trembling as we approached.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17A gorgeous setting, absolutely gorgeous.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Couldn't have asked for a nicer setting.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21Really like it from the outside.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- Really intrigued to see what's inside.- It's attached.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27How do you feel about that?

0:10:27 > 0:10:30That's the first thing I noticed,

0:10:30 > 0:10:34but obviously, in this location, something's got to give.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Quite like the fact that we've got neighbours that are near,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41but we'll have to wait and see what inside brings.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43I can see there's going to be a bit of tension!

0:10:43 > 0:10:46The dog will decide, I think.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Hopefully, the dog will give the heads-up to the large double garage

0:10:50 > 0:10:53which has studio potential for Carl.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55But it's the windows in the main house

0:10:55 > 0:10:58that I think will hold his attention.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Come in to the sun room. What are your thoughts?

0:11:04 > 0:11:08It's the view that I'm looking at. It captures the view perfectly.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11The view is one of the main things that we're after.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15Certainly from my side of things, I want to be able to sit

0:11:15 > 0:11:16and admire the view.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Quite cosy. I quite like it. - QUITE like it?- Quite like it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22What do you think of the style of it?

0:11:22 > 0:11:25This is quite a taster of the whole house.

0:11:26 > 0:11:32It's very modern, which obviously, ideally, I wanted some period features,

0:11:32 > 0:11:36but I do like the general feel and the presentation of the room.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38OK, well, let's move on.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45This was the original front door before they put it on the sun room,

0:11:45 > 0:11:47but now it's become the back door.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51- This is the sitting room.- I like the fireplace.- I like the fireplace.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Eyes immediately drawn to the period detail.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58Size-wise, it's cosy.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03I'm just wondering if it's a little bit too small. Ceilings are OK.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06But then it could be positioning of furniture.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10'Let's see if Lesley warms to the kitchen.'

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Right, now. You've seen everything on the ground floor.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- What do you think? - I think it's lovely.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Everything you could need in the kitchen. Quite modern.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29It's not a huge property.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31You've got to take that on board,

0:12:31 > 0:12:34but what they've done with it is really great.

0:12:34 > 0:12:39- Ideal for entertaining. I can't fault the kitchen at all.- That's good.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42You're quite hard to read.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45You've got this poker face when you come into a room. So you like it?

0:12:45 > 0:12:48I take everything in first. I love the floor.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55'We have a quiet but positive reaction to the downstairs,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58'and upstairs the space has also been well configured

0:12:58 > 0:13:01'to offer three bedrooms spread over two floors.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04'There's a single room with a small but sleek

0:13:04 > 0:13:08'refitted modern bathroom, and next door is a possible master.'

0:13:11 > 0:13:17- This is one of the two bedrooms on this floor.- Excellent view.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21Beautiful view. Imagine waking up to that. Lots of storage.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26- Is this the main bedroom?- They use this as their master bedroom, yeah.

0:13:27 > 0:13:33- But all the bedrooms are pretty much the same size.- Size is fine for me.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36'We'll head upstairs again and see

0:13:36 > 0:13:39'if they have any creative thoughts for the third bedroom.'

0:13:41 > 0:13:44Up in the eaves, they've added an extra room.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47So this is a new addition in the last few years.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51The reason they didn't use this as the master is

0:13:51 > 0:13:54because you're a bit leany-over.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55But it's got great views

0:13:55 > 0:13:59and it might be a good work space or an office.

0:13:59 > 0:14:00Be ideal for you if you wanted it.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Yeah, I've already got my mark on it, to be honest.

0:14:03 > 0:14:04The view is stunning.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09It's ideal size, the light's good, it's out of the way

0:14:09 > 0:14:12so I wouldn't be in the way downstairs.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16'This cottage has all the requisite rooms they were after

0:14:16 > 0:14:20'and would be an extremely comfortable first home for them.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23'Outside, the location gives them glorious countryside

0:14:23 > 0:14:27'on their doorstep, but at the expense of the size of the garden.'

0:14:29 > 0:14:31Come on out.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37So this is where we have to compromise.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40I was waiting for that word.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Because this is your back garden,

0:14:43 > 0:14:45essentially just a little patio garden.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49Space enough to have a barbecue and a big kennel,

0:14:49 > 0:14:52- but not really room for a veggie patch.- No.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56I can't see myself just sitting out here too long,

0:14:56 > 0:15:00to be honest with you. It would be more the sun room at the front.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04What do you think this property is on the market for?

0:15:04 > 0:15:08I think because it's a semi-detached property,

0:15:08 > 0:15:12I'm thinking it might be around 270.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Knowing you're a man of your word

0:15:14 > 0:15:15and you wouldn't go above our budget,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18- I'm going to go, actually, 290.- 290.

0:15:18 > 0:15:23Clearly you overestimate my word, because sadly, this is over budget.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26This is actually on the market for 315,

0:15:26 > 0:15:30but have a look around again, explore at your leisure,

0:15:30 > 0:15:32and I'll meet you out in the front in the sun room

0:15:32 > 0:15:34and then we can take it from there.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36- OK. Thank you.- In you go.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42'The fact that this semi-detached cottage is over-budget

0:15:42 > 0:15:44'at 315,000 only highlights the premium'

0:15:44 > 0:15:47they have to pay for location.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50However, it's also in excellent decorative order

0:15:50 > 0:15:54and provides them with two living rooms, one with great views

0:15:54 > 0:15:56and the other with a stone fireplace,

0:15:56 > 0:16:00a beautiful kitchen diner and three bedrooms,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03one of which Carl has already earmarked as his studio.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06The main drawback for them was the courtyard garden,

0:16:06 > 0:16:10but it's offset by being in their ideal location with great access

0:16:10 > 0:16:13to Kendal, the Lakes and the M6 for driving to work.

0:16:13 > 0:16:21Internally, I think it offers us all the space and the rooms that we need.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24We've got two potential living rooms.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29I think the kitchen/dining room is absolutely amazing.

0:16:29 > 0:16:35Location-wise, this is probably as good as it gets, so the question

0:16:35 > 0:16:39is are we prepared to lose the back garden for being in this space?

0:16:39 > 0:16:43- Hello.- Hello. - All done in there?- Yes.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Keep your thoughts about this house to yourselves

0:16:45 > 0:16:48because we have got another one to look at.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01Sitting on the outskirts of the national park,

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Kendal is Cumbria's third largest town and is often dubbed

0:17:04 > 0:17:06the southern gateway to the Lakes

0:17:06 > 0:17:09and is defined by its limestone grey buildings.

0:17:09 > 0:17:14From 1941, it was home to Alfred Wainwright and was where

0:17:14 > 0:17:15he served as borough treasurer

0:17:15 > 0:17:19and worked on his famous Pictorial Guides of the Lakeland Fells.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Along with exploring the terrain on foot,

0:17:21 > 0:17:26there is also a fantastic network of accessible cycle routes,

0:17:26 > 0:17:28and as Carl and Lesley are keen to take to two wheels,

0:17:28 > 0:17:32earlier in the week we arranged for them to meet Toby Dalton who's lived

0:17:32 > 0:17:36in the Kendal area most of his life and owns a local cycle company.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40He's taking them on a leisurely ride which takes in some local

0:17:40 > 0:17:45beauty spots, starting with a pause for breath in Staveley.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46Great little stopping place, this.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49This is Barley Bridge and the Barley weir,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51and we've just come back from Kendal,

0:17:51 > 0:17:54so we're five miles into the ride or so.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57Mountain bikers come from all over the country

0:17:57 > 0:18:00to ride the trails round here. There's some big famous trails.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03One in particular is called Garburn Pass.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05It's real steep, a very technical descent.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06a real challenge for a lot of people.

0:18:06 > 0:18:11- So would that be a good one for me and Leslie?- Maybe in a year's time!

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Cyclists are asked to avoid foot paths.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17That's not a problem here as Cumbria

0:18:17 > 0:18:20has more than 1,200 miles of bridleway,

0:18:20 > 0:18:22more than any other county,

0:18:22 > 0:18:26which helps pull in £33 million from outdoor pursuits each year.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30It's easy to see why with views like this over Kendal

0:18:30 > 0:18:33towards the northern lakes. But that's just for starters.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36OK, guys. If you're up for it, we're going to go

0:18:36 > 0:18:37and check out Windermere now.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41It's a little bit of a cycle, 15 miles in that direction.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45We're going to go on a little curve round on some country lanes.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Toby has mapped out a comfortable two-hour right for them

0:18:49 > 0:18:54which ends in a well-earned rest by the shores of Lake Windermere.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Nice bench and a good view.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59Did you enjoy the ride? Do you think you'll be

0:18:59 > 0:19:02out on your bikes quite a bit when you eventually move up here?

0:19:02 > 0:19:04It was an excellent ride.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07It's where to go, there's so many choices,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10I think that's our bigger problem, which direction you head off in.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Even for me, because I'm not that experienced with all of the hills,

0:19:14 > 0:19:18it was all right for my level cos I'm quite a novice,

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- yet it was still a challenge in parts for Carl.- Excellent.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24The great privilege is that you don't have to go home

0:19:24 > 0:19:27and after work you can nip out on your bike

0:19:27 > 0:19:29or put your running shoes on and go out on the fells.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Within ten minutes, you can be out in the wilderness.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36Can't beat it, to be honest. It's a cracking place.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Being able to enjoy the magnificent countryside of the Lakes

0:19:41 > 0:19:43is key to their move.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Although, our second property also factors in their request for land.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49As we edge over to the western side of the Lakes,

0:19:49 > 0:19:53close to Broughton-in-Furness, just over 30 miles from Kendal.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56In the past, this small market town prospered

0:19:56 > 0:19:58from the trading of wool and cattle.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03Many of its historic buildings surround its Georgian market square

0:20:03 > 0:20:08with its central obelisk marking the Jubilee of King George III in 1810.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11On the outskirts of the town, and with stunning views

0:20:11 > 0:20:14of the Duddon Valley, we find our second property,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17whose remote setting should appeal to Carl,

0:20:17 > 0:20:20whilst giving Leslie the original character she wants.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25Now, you know you were worried about neighbours...

0:20:27 > 0:20:30We thought we'd bring you somewhere

0:20:30 > 0:20:32that was just a little bit more remote.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Yes. This is just what I was after,

0:20:35 > 0:20:39but I don't know about Leslie? Location wise, this is perfection.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43It's a great location and this is the property I want to show you.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- It again is attached.- OK.

0:20:46 > 0:20:51- We couldn't rustle up all of this for you in your budget.- Why not?!

0:20:51 > 0:20:54But what do you think of this architectural style?

0:20:54 > 0:20:56This is probably more in your...

0:20:56 > 0:21:01From what I can see, I like the outside of the building.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05I like the fact that it's built in stone so that's very appealing.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Let's have a look inside.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Let's see if she's sold on the internal quirks

0:21:10 > 0:21:13that inevitably crop up in such a historic conversion.

0:21:15 > 0:21:20Come into the pigsty aka the dining hall.

0:21:25 > 0:21:26I like the features.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30I like the fact that it's uneven walls

0:21:30 > 0:21:33and not finished to a smooth finish.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38I'm just trying to think how we'd actually use this space,

0:21:38 > 0:21:42if we would actually use it as a dining room.

0:21:42 > 0:21:43Sure.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46This is billed as the dining room because it's next to the kitchen.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48Why don't you have a peek in the kitchen?

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Mind the step.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59It's not huge.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03No, I think if you look in the English dictionary, the term little

0:22:03 > 0:22:05is a picture of this kitchen.

0:22:06 > 0:22:11Maybe the features of the living room can work their charm.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16This is the other room on the downstairs.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19This would be the sitting room, lounge.

0:22:19 > 0:22:23Great, great thick walls again with a little alcove and a window seat.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26So, it's a bit more period-y.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27It is much more period-y.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31It's certainly cosy. It's got the features.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34The features are lovely. I love the window seat

0:22:34 > 0:22:36and the view outside.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39And the little features they've done and the fireplace.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41I'm just trying to think

0:22:41 > 0:22:44if it's a workable space.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46And you've got three bedrooms.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54The views are a big theme upstairs where there are

0:22:54 > 0:22:58three bedrooms which like the last property are spread over two floors.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01The first consists of two cosy, little singles

0:23:01 > 0:23:04and a well-furnished family bathroom.

0:23:04 > 0:23:09But we'll see if the master on the second floor measures up.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14So the present owners have just put this on.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16This is a top floor extension

0:23:16 > 0:23:20to give themselves this master bedroom.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24Obviously, this is by far the biggest upstairs room.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26This is fine for me.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30It's got a nice feeling, with the light coming in through there.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33And from there as well, behind the door.

0:23:33 > 0:23:38So far, it's just the kitchen really that's an issue for me.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42Although they feel that the room sizes overall have come up short,

0:23:42 > 0:23:44there is the possibility to extend downstairs

0:23:44 > 0:23:48as the current owners have drawn up plans to build a glass sun room

0:23:48 > 0:23:50out from the current porch.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Subject to planning permission, of course.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55There are also other opportunities outside

0:23:55 > 0:23:59that would exceed their expectations.

0:23:59 > 0:24:03You may have fallen in love with the house in the last property but you didn't like the land.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07- There was no land to like. Fair enough?- Fair enough.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11So this property has a bit more land.

0:24:11 > 0:24:17All of this is yours, the mown, green grass bit,

0:24:17 > 0:24:21but there is also the possibility for a small purchase price

0:24:21 > 0:24:27of buying all the two acres right up to the top of the hill.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29So without that big parcel of land,

0:24:29 > 0:24:33how much do you think this property costs?

0:24:33 > 0:24:34250?

0:24:36 > 0:24:40I might say it's slightly more than that.

0:24:40 > 0:24:41270.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46Well, this property is on the market for 250

0:24:46 > 0:24:51and that parcel of land could be yours for £10,000.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53So that makes 260 all together,

0:24:53 > 0:24:56but the vendor's keen to accept offers from you,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59so you could probably get it for around 250.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Why don't you go have a look.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03You can have a wander up there as well.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Take a look in, see what you think about the house again,

0:25:06 > 0:25:09what you think you can do with the land and then we'll meet at the end.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11- OK.- OK.- Off you trot.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18Priced at just a shade under £250,000,

0:25:18 > 0:25:21this stone cottage is well under their budget threshold

0:25:21 > 0:25:24and offers them a wealth of period features,

0:25:24 > 0:25:28including exposed beams and a stone fireplace,

0:25:28 > 0:25:30three bedrooms

0:25:30 > 0:25:34and a sizeable garden which they could extend to two acres

0:25:34 > 0:25:37if they spent £10,000 on the adjoining woodland,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40all wrapped up in a spectacular setting

0:25:40 > 0:25:43with far-reaching Lakeland views.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I love all the period features that we have in this property.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Obviously, the little window seat and the beams.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52But for me, I think the living area downstairs

0:25:52 > 0:25:54is just a little bit on the small side.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57I can see why you brought us here.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00Again, you do need to look at the potential

0:26:00 > 0:26:02as opposed to what's actually here.

0:26:02 > 0:26:08This does offer the potential to become the house for ever.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12Beautiful views but maybe a few too many pieces to this jigsaw.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16- Are you all done?- We are. - You're still smiling. That's good.

0:26:16 > 0:26:17Come on, let's go and regroup.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29As evening falls over the Cumbrian hills,

0:26:29 > 0:26:33it marks the end of the first day of our property search.

0:26:40 > 0:26:44With their £300,000 budget, Carl and Leslie want to quit

0:26:44 > 0:26:48the Blackpool suburbs and build a new life for themselves in the country.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52The two houses we've seen so far have proved just how tricky

0:26:52 > 0:26:56balancing the equation of house, land and location can be.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00But for our mystery house, we are throwing caution to the wind...

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Ta-da!

0:27:02 > 0:27:05..and I get a taste of one of Cumbria's sweetest claims to fame.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09Smells nice.

0:27:15 > 0:27:20I've already clocked that Carl has a strong, but probably slightly frustrated, creative streak,

0:27:20 > 0:27:24but I realised yesterday that Leslie has it too. They're both dreamers.

0:27:24 > 0:27:29They're both always looking forward to the next room, the next project, the next house, the next field.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Really, this move is a lot more than just changing houses.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36It's almost like they're both coming together to start something completely new.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40Then when I think about their commute, how realistic is it

0:27:40 > 0:27:44to travel for an hour-and-a-half every morning, back and forth to Blackpool,

0:27:44 > 0:27:49when what they really want, I think, is something totally new?

0:27:49 > 0:27:54We need to force their hand and the mystery house certainly does that.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02We're going to see the mystery house. What do you think that will involve?

0:28:03 > 0:28:08Just so long as it's not a terraced house in the middle of town,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10that's my only stipulation.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14Hoping that it will be a detached property. But not too remote.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19For our mystery property, we're staying on Cumbrian soil

0:28:19 > 0:28:21with the Lakes 25 miles away,

0:28:21 > 0:28:25and heading to Alston in the North Pennines.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Reputedly the highest market town in England at over 1,000 feet

0:28:28 > 0:28:32above sea level, it provides them with great walking terrain

0:28:32 > 0:28:34for their new outdoors lifestyle.

0:28:34 > 0:28:39Five miles from Alston, our mystery barn conversion challenges them

0:28:39 > 0:28:42to think about turning their back on the commute to Blackpool,

0:28:42 > 0:28:47and gives them a taste of how they could earn an income from running a holiday let.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50So, I appreciate I've taken you on quite a hike

0:28:50 > 0:28:54but luckily I've brought some Kendal mint cake to keep you fired up.

0:28:55 > 0:28:58- Thank you.- It's good, high energy.- Thank you.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03And it's this property here.

0:29:03 > 0:29:08The whole stone-built, from the 1700s,

0:29:08 > 0:29:12old miners' cottage in a beautiful location.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- Detached!- Detached.- Excellent.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18From the outside, I love the stone-built property.

0:29:18 > 0:29:23And the location is absolutely mind blowing.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26So this is actually two holiday lets joined together.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29So you need to decide what you're going to do with it.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32Sounds like a positive challenge.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36'Now they've taken the bait, we'll explore the larger cottage,

0:29:36 > 0:29:41'whose two bedrooms and living areas are set out over three storeys.'

0:29:44 > 0:29:45Come on in.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51Bearing in mind it is a sort of upside-down house -

0:29:51 > 0:29:53to take advantage of all the views,

0:29:53 > 0:29:56the bedrooms in both cottages are downstairs.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00Yes, I completely agree, I would have all the bedrooms downstairs.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02You need to appreciate the view,

0:30:02 > 0:30:05so there's no point having your living room downstairs.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09- I'd probably keep it the same. - Outside, you ticked all my boxes.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12- It's just Leslie you've got to convince now.- Oh, right. One down!

0:30:14 > 0:30:18Tacked onto the side of the property is a laundry room used by holiday guests,

0:30:18 > 0:30:20and downstairs there is a good-sized bathroom

0:30:20 > 0:30:22along with a separate sauna.

0:30:22 > 0:30:26But I think Leslie is going to be convinced about the upstairs kitchen

0:30:26 > 0:30:29when she sees its main focal point.

0:30:29 > 0:30:30Ta-da!

0:30:33 > 0:30:35That's what you call a fireplace!

0:30:35 > 0:30:39This is what you call a period detail.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- It is a period detail. - It is a period detail.

0:30:42 > 0:30:46It is an old miners' kitchen stove.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49What do you think of the bones of the kitchen?

0:30:49 > 0:30:53It's bigger than the last one.

0:30:53 > 0:30:55The size of the kitchen is fine.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58It's really good. I could imagine, you know, modernising this,

0:30:58 > 0:31:00and look at the view.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03- Is that a positive poker face? - THEY LAUGH

0:31:03 > 0:31:05Let's have a look upstairs.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08'We've notched up brownie points from Leslie for the kitchen,

0:31:08 > 0:31:12'so time to admire the views from the upstairs living room.'

0:31:15 > 0:31:18Up the stairs to the view!

0:31:19 > 0:31:23- Wow.- Makes sense to have the sitting room upstairs.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26It's better than I was expecting.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28I was worried there were going to be smaller views

0:31:28 > 0:31:30that we had to stick our heads out of.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32I do really like it.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35I can see if our furniture was in here, facing out to that view,

0:31:35 > 0:31:38it would just be wonderful.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42OK, now, you might be wondering where you sleep.

0:31:42 > 0:31:43Is that the surprise?

0:31:43 > 0:31:47No, it's not downstairs. Because there is a room here.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57They do have one room upstairs, which is the master bedroom.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01- It's quite romantic. - It is, actually.

0:32:01 > 0:32:06And then, in the morning, ta-da!

0:32:08 > 0:32:09It's the view.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12'Now we've seen the house they can call home,

0:32:12 > 0:32:15'we'll go and explore the second part of our mystery proposition.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19'These two holiday lets combined are currently bringing in

0:32:19 > 0:32:25'an annual income of around £20,000 based on just a 20-week occupancy.

0:32:25 > 0:32:29'The second cottage also has a double bedroom downstairs,

0:32:29 > 0:32:33'and benefits from a Victorian fireplace and flagstone floors

0:32:33 > 0:32:36'with a spacious modern bathroom opposite.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39'But it's time for a game of compare or contrast

0:32:39 > 0:32:42'as we take a look at the main living area upstairs.'

0:32:46 > 0:32:50Coming through to the sitting room again with a beautiful view.

0:32:50 > 0:32:56And with the kitchen all part of it.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02That definitely passes!

0:33:02 > 0:33:05'While they mull over which side of our mystery house

0:33:05 > 0:33:07'to take as their own, we'll head outside,

0:33:07 > 0:33:11'where they get more than they could have ever expected.'

0:33:13 > 0:33:17Ah, it's the big moment.

0:33:17 > 0:33:21These two cottages together come with a parcel of seven acres of land.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24Oh, my God.

0:33:25 > 0:33:30- I don't know what to say. - OK, well, let's talk money.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33I'm going to say 340.

0:33:35 > 0:33:41I'd certainly say it's worth that, but I'm going to hope it's 320.

0:33:41 > 0:33:46This is on the market for...

0:33:46 > 0:33:48£300,000.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51THEY CHUCKLE

0:33:51 > 0:33:54- You could afford it. - Neither of us know what to say.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56Well, why don't you have a wander around,

0:33:56 > 0:33:58while you think about it,

0:33:58 > 0:34:03- and when you've found some words, we can talk afterwards.- OK.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10Aww! Now, that was a very, very long punt,

0:34:10 > 0:34:12bringing them all the way here.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15You know what? It seems to have paid off.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19Bang on budget at £300,000,

0:34:19 > 0:34:23our mystery house is the ultimate test for them to sever work ties to Blackpool.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26But if they are brave enough to go the distance,

0:34:26 > 0:34:30they will get two houses in one, providing a two-bedroom

0:34:30 > 0:34:34and one-bedroom cottage, both with upper-storey living rooms

0:34:34 > 0:34:37from which to soak up those incredible views.

0:34:37 > 0:34:39And along with the ready-made holiday let business,

0:34:39 > 0:34:42there are over seven acres of land

0:34:42 > 0:34:45to fulfil Leslie's dream of self-sufficiency.

0:34:45 > 0:34:50So we could either be in the other property and rent this one out,

0:34:50 > 0:34:52because that would give us more income,

0:34:52 > 0:34:59or we could stay in this one, depending on the job situation.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02I think this property is absolutely amazing.

0:35:02 > 0:35:06It's got a fabulous location, it's detached,

0:35:06 > 0:35:11the decisions are which part of the property do we potentially live in?

0:35:11 > 0:35:14This property is too good to be true, to be honest.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16There are no negatives.

0:35:16 > 0:35:21The only problem as I see it is which side of the house

0:35:21 > 0:35:23do we want to live on?

0:35:23 > 0:35:27As the teachers would say, it is an A+, top of the class.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30There's your little gold star.

0:35:30 > 0:35:34And that, ladies and gentlemen, was a good mystery house.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38- Have you found words to express your joy?- A few!

0:35:38 > 0:35:41Good, well, let's share them in the car. We're going home.

0:35:51 > 0:35:57Cumbria's mountainous landscape is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

0:35:57 > 0:36:01In 1869, it also inspired a sugar-rich foodstuff that today

0:36:01 > 0:36:05you are likely to find in most mountaineers' pockets.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09I'm talking of course of the world-famous Kendal mint cake,

0:36:09 > 0:36:11and I've come to the town from which it hails

0:36:11 > 0:36:14to visit one of the oldest surviving mint cake companies,

0:36:14 > 0:36:18and to meet its owner, Peter McCafferty,

0:36:18 > 0:36:22to find out more about its origins and its enduring appeal.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26- Look at that. Glittering.- Fantastic.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29I quite like the idea of a sort of sweet-makers war,

0:36:29 > 0:36:33confectioners battling it out on the streets of Kendal. Is that the case?

0:36:33 > 0:36:35Yes, everyday(!) It's really vicious.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38You're not the only people to make it, are you?

0:36:38 > 0:36:41There are only three companies that make Kendal mint cake,

0:36:41 > 0:36:44and we are competitors, but we are friendly competitors.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46So often if we run out of chocolate,

0:36:46 > 0:36:50we'll approach one of the other companies and say, "Can you help us out until our delivery?"

0:36:50 > 0:36:54And vice versa, if they run short, like last week they ran short of something,

0:36:54 > 0:36:55so we let them borrow some glucose.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57I know you're going to be biased,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59but is this the best thing about Kendal?

0:36:59 > 0:37:02There are some very good things about Kendal.

0:37:02 > 0:37:06- Kendal mint cake is one of the good things about Kendal.- So diplomatic.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08Brilliant.

0:37:08 > 0:37:10'This homegrown product is very well travelled,

0:37:10 > 0:37:13'having accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary's team

0:37:13 > 0:37:15'on their ascent of Everest,

0:37:15 > 0:37:17'as well as Shackleton's Antarctic expedition.

0:37:17 > 0:37:22'It's even the fuel of choice for some gold medal athletes.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24'Despite its illustrious history,

0:37:24 > 0:37:27'the way it is made has remained unchanged.'

0:37:27 > 0:37:29It's like Willy Wonka!

0:37:31 > 0:37:34'The process starts by adding a huge amount of sugar

0:37:34 > 0:37:38'to a water, salt and glucose solution in a copper pan.'

0:37:40 > 0:37:44- So that's 30 pounds of sugar?- Yes.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47'It's then boiled for around 20 minutes

0:37:47 > 0:37:49'until it reaches the right white colour,

0:37:49 > 0:37:53'when the sugary fondant is added and stirred in.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56'Next, it's time to add another essential ingredient.'

0:37:56 > 0:37:59This is the mint, we pour in the mint now.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01That's a special blend of Californian mint,

0:38:01 > 0:38:03the very best mint in the world.

0:38:04 > 0:38:06Oh, that's nice.

0:38:06 > 0:38:08Then you give it a good stir.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11What David is doing now is stirring the fondant.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13The reason we have the fondant,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17that just encourages the mint cake to recrystallise.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20So that just sort of speeds up the setting process.

0:38:20 > 0:38:24'Once the mixture has thickened and started to crystallise,

0:38:24 > 0:38:27'it's ready to be poured into the moulds to set.'

0:38:29 > 0:38:33David is making that look easy but that is actually quite hard.

0:38:33 > 0:38:34If you have a go at that,

0:38:34 > 0:38:37you'd find there would be a big splodge everywhere.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39So you just...

0:38:39 > 0:38:42Well, maybe not, you might be an expert.

0:38:42 > 0:38:44You might be a natural.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49David, your job is toast!

0:38:54 > 0:38:57'This batch will typically make 190 bars.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59'It is left for a full day to set

0:38:59 > 0:39:02'and breathe before it goes through to the wrapping room.

0:39:02 > 0:39:05'With exports to Canada, Australia and America,

0:39:05 > 0:39:08'it's heartening that such a traditional product

0:39:08 > 0:39:11'can hold its own in the competitive sweet market.'

0:39:18 > 0:39:23Even by Escape standards, that was an epic mystery house.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25Not only did they totally love it against all the odds,

0:39:25 > 0:39:29it seems to have blown the other two houses out of the water.

0:39:29 > 0:39:32Let's find out what they really think.

0:39:37 > 0:39:41I'm quite excited to hear what you have to say,

0:39:41 > 0:39:43because you've been playing poker face,

0:39:43 > 0:39:47and you've had all sorts of crazy ideas left, right and centre.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49So, it's time to gather the threads together.

0:39:49 > 0:39:52So, spinning back the clock to the first house.

0:39:52 > 0:39:56This was the almost-perfect house that didn't have the dream garden.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58What do we feel about that now?

0:39:58 > 0:40:00I still really like that property.

0:40:00 > 0:40:03The downside of that is obviously

0:40:03 > 0:40:07the back garden wasn't as big as we would have liked

0:40:07 > 0:40:11for potentially growing vegetables, et cetera.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13But the actual property was beautiful.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16Now, the second house was pretty remote.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19What you think about that one in retrospect?

0:40:19 > 0:40:20The location was good again.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24I was relatively happy, I think it was the house that probably

0:40:24 > 0:40:27didn't fulfil the ticked boxes.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30I mean, to be honest, you weren't too keen on the house.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34I think the layout didn't work properly for me downstairs.

0:40:34 > 0:40:37I didn't get a nice feeling downstairs.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40Having said that, upstairs the bedrooms and the bathroom

0:40:40 > 0:40:43were more than adequate for me.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47Now, the mystery house certainly gave you space to be adventurous.

0:40:47 > 0:40:52The house itself is just too good to be true to be honest with you.

0:40:52 > 0:40:58The river at the bottom, the view, you know, the B&B.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02I think we're both in agreement for the mystery property.

0:41:02 > 0:41:07Like you said, there is a lot of opportunity to decide in which

0:41:07 > 0:41:09property we actually want to live.

0:41:09 > 0:41:15And which property we could use as a B&B as a source of income.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17Initially when we first went there,

0:41:17 > 0:41:22it was a lot further out than we had anticipated.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26It was a real long shot because it was so far away from Blackpool,

0:41:26 > 0:41:31totally uncommutable, and we wondered if it would ever work for you.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35It all boils down to the interview I've got next week, as it happens,

0:41:35 > 0:41:39for a position just outside Carlisle.

0:41:39 > 0:41:43- Oh, right! That's handy.- So, I mean, again, fate has intervened here.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45This is all falling into place.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49Ker-ching! So it looks like the mystery house came up trumps.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52And will you go back and look at it? What will happen next?

0:41:52 > 0:41:55I think we'd definitely like to go back for a second viewing.

0:41:55 > 0:41:59To speed things up, we're probably going to put our house to let,

0:41:59 > 0:42:00just to speed the process up.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Well, I really hope things work out.

0:42:03 > 0:42:07You've been great to show around because you're so creative and thinking ahead.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09Sometimes five steps ahead.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13It is a real joy to see that you found somewhere that you can keep on doing that.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17- I hope it goes ahead. Good luck with your interview.- Thank you.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26I am so pleased about the way this show panned out,

0:42:26 > 0:42:29because we often start off saying, "This is a challenge

0:42:29 > 0:42:31"and there's going to be a compromise

0:42:31 > 0:42:33"and no-one will really be pleased,"

0:42:33 > 0:42:35but, actually, the mystery house pleased everyone.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38It pleased Carl, it pleased Leslie, it certainly pleased me,

0:42:38 > 0:42:44because in one swoop, Carl's news about getting a job 25 miles away

0:42:44 > 0:42:47made all the pieces fit together. Property perfection.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49If you want to see more of that,

0:42:49 > 0:42:53make sure you tune in next time for Escape To The Country.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57Once Carl and Leslie have explored new possibilities for work

0:42:57 > 0:43:02in the area, they are hoping to make an offer on the mystery house.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07If you'd like to escape to the country in Scotland, Wales,

0:43:07 > 0:43:10Northern Ireland or England and would like our help,

0:43:10 > 0:43:12please apply online.
