0:00:02 > 0:00:05Meet my new friend Nelson, a one-eyed grey seal

0:00:05 > 0:00:07or rather, a life-sized statue of him.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11Where are we? Who is he? Why is he here?

0:00:11 > 0:00:13I'll tell you in just a moment.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47On today's show, I'm in search of the cute country cottage

0:00:47 > 0:00:50our buyer has been dreaming of for over 30 years.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Early on, we get off to a great start.

0:00:54 > 0:00:59- What would your daughter say if she saw this?- She'd say, "Mum, buy it."

0:00:59 > 0:01:02But then our mystery house causes a bit of consternation.

0:01:02 > 0:01:07It's nice but it needs an awful lot doing to it.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Today I'm in south Cornwall,

0:01:13 > 0:01:18home to 40% of Britain's grey seal population.

0:01:18 > 0:01:23For 25 years, the real Nelson was a frequent visitor to these waters

0:01:23 > 0:01:27but it was here in Looe that he eventually called home,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30which is hardly surprising when you realise

0:01:30 > 0:01:33there's a fish market on the other side of the harbour.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Sadly, Nelson died in 2003

0:01:36 > 0:01:41but he was so loved by locals and tourists alike

0:01:41 > 0:01:45that the town now has a permanent memorial of him here

0:01:45 > 0:01:46on Pennyland Rocks.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50As Britain's most south-westerly county,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Cornwall is surrounded on three sides by ocean.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Its length from the tip of Land's End

0:01:56 > 0:01:59to the eastern boundary with Devon is 70 miles,

0:01:59 > 0:02:05while at its narrowest part, it's just seven miles wide.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08The long and rugged coastline has always been important

0:02:08 > 0:02:12to the people who live here. In days gone by, ships were wrecked

0:02:12 > 0:02:14so often that the term 'wrecking' was born.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18This meant taking valuables from a stricken vessel and for many,

0:02:18 > 0:02:22it came to be quite a lucrative activity.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Cornwall is also renowned for the mining of tin and copper

0:02:26 > 0:02:31which was an important industry in the region from the Middle Ages

0:02:31 > 0:02:34to its peak in the 19th century.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39Currently however, derelict mine workings survive in only nine areas of the county.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43The ones that do remain are protected as World Heritage Sites.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Whether you're after a slice of history,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50glorious coastal walks or simply want a bask on the beach,

0:02:50 > 0:02:55Cornwall has plenty to offer for house buyers looking to Escape To The Country.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02Today, the average price of a detached property here in Cornwall

0:03:02 > 0:03:06is just under £270,000.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10That's around 5% above the national average.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Those figures, although officially correct, don't really paint

0:03:14 > 0:03:18a realistic picture of the housing market here.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21You see, if you took two practically identical houses -

0:03:21 > 0:03:27let's say for argument's sake, detached. four bedrooms, set in three quarters of an acre -

0:03:27 > 0:03:33and put one of those houses by the coast with spectacular sea views

0:03:33 > 0:03:37and the other inland surrounded by wonderful countryside,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40you might have two very similar properties

0:03:40 > 0:03:43but you'd have two very different price tags.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47In fact, a leading estate agent here in Cornwall

0:03:47 > 0:03:51said the inland property would cost around £600,000.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54However, and here's the big difference,

0:03:54 > 0:04:00the property by the coast would sell for around two million.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Bear that in mind as we take a look

0:04:02 > 0:04:05at what's currently on the market in the county.

0:04:05 > 0:04:12For £360,000, you could be living in this three-bedroom former barn in Pillaton.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16It has a topsy-turvy layout with two bedrooms on the ground floor

0:04:16 > 0:04:18and only one upstairs.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22Also on this floor, you'll find a bright modern kitchen

0:04:22 > 0:04:26and a sitting room that features an authentic log burner.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30This five-bedroom Victorian stone barn conversion in Sheviock

0:04:30 > 0:04:34is priced at £600,000.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Originally two agricultural barns joined together 15 years ago,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41it's been beautifully modernised while retaining

0:04:41 > 0:04:44the original exposed beams inside.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48It also comes with a variety of outbuildings, including stables

0:04:48 > 0:04:50and three acres of paddocks.

0:04:51 > 0:04:56And if your budget can stretch to £950,000,

0:04:56 > 0:04:58you could opt for this -

0:04:58 > 0:05:01a five bedroom former pump house in Treesmill

0:05:01 > 0:05:04which is surrounded by a garden and overlooks its own lake.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08The master bedroom has a stunning en-suite

0:05:08 > 0:05:12and the double-height kitchen/diner was converted from the old engine room.

0:05:12 > 0:05:18Some wonderful properties there to suit all budgets in all locations.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21We've got three more smashing houses lined up for today's buyer.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25Let's meet Jenny and her best friend Jean.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29House hunter Jenny lives in the busy commuter town of Orpington in Kent

0:05:29 > 0:05:32and is about to retire from her job

0:05:32 > 0:05:35working with adults with learning difficulties.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Accompanying her on her property search

0:05:38 > 0:05:40is close friend of almost 30 years, Jean,

0:05:40 > 0:05:45with whom she's been sharing her fantasies of country living ever since they met.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49I've wanted to move to the country since my daughter was four.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I fell in love with Cornwall the first time I went there.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59It's been a long, long journey and I can do it.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03- It's just been your dream. - It's been my dream for a long time.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07I've heard it for the last 28 years anyway. It's been her dream.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- It's about time.- It is.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Living on her own since her daughter's flown the nest,

0:06:13 > 0:06:17she'd like to move to a village near Looe in Cornwall

0:06:17 > 0:06:20where she's looking forward to a more laid-back lifestyle.

0:06:20 > 0:06:26I would love to be able to teach cookery on a one-to-one basis.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30In a little cottage somewhere with lovely views

0:06:30 > 0:06:33and go to local markets and buy fresh food

0:06:33 > 0:06:36and get involved with conservation, read more, walk more.

0:06:36 > 0:06:42Just do more rather than work and feel tired and worn out all the time.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Just live life a bit more.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48So she'll be needing a big kitchen for those cookery lessons

0:06:48 > 0:06:52but Jenny's list of other demands is rather modest.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56For the next property, I'd like at least two bedrooms.

0:06:56 > 0:07:02I'd like to be in a nice village and I'd like a small garden.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05I'd prefer something old

0:07:05 > 0:07:09but I've seen modern houses with really beautiful views.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Really, I guess I'm open to anything.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17That's what we like, a flexible buyer.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20There is one thing she can't cope with.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22I'm not a DIY person.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25I'd rather somebody else did it for me.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27A man that does, maybe.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31I'm not really... I don't mind a bit of painting

0:07:31 > 0:07:35but I can't do wallpapering or repairs or anything.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Well, we've had our cards marked.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Just one more thing to check and that's the money.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46The budget for my next property would be £230,000.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58Jenny has set her heart on living in a village

0:07:58 > 0:08:00close to the small coastal town of Looe.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03We'll be taking her and Jean around three wonderful properties

0:08:03 > 0:08:05and as ever, I'll be asking them

0:08:05 > 0:08:10to guess the price of each home before I reveal it.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Our last offering is of course our mystery house.

0:08:13 > 0:08:14With today's choice,

0:08:14 > 0:08:17we are making Jenny face up to one of her pet hates.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23Hello, ladies. Welcome to Cornwall.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Jenny, it's been a bit of a dream of yours to move here.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30Did you ever think, "I'm actually never going to do it," or did you know in your heart?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34I knew in my heart I'd get there but I didn't know when.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35This is the time.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37It is and you've brought Jean to give you some moral support

0:08:37 > 0:08:40making sure we find you the perfect property, all going well.

0:08:40 > 0:08:46Are there any elements of your old life you're going to miss in Kent?

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Just my daughter, really. That's it. And my friends.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52But you're both going to come and stay, aren't you?

0:08:52 > 0:08:56I know trying to be close to a community's important, isn't it?

0:08:56 > 0:08:59It is. Because I'm getting older,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02- I need a doctor, a post office, neighbours.- Yeah.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04And you want to make new friends when you're down here.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08We're going to be bringing Jean down regularly from Kent

0:09:08 > 0:09:10but obviously you want new friends here too.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13I do, and I'll join lots of things and be involved with conservation and things.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Well, we've got a fantastic day to start our search.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20We've got three smashing properties to show you, so shall we get going?

0:09:23 > 0:09:28For her maximum budget of £230,000, Jenny's short but sweet wish-list

0:09:28 > 0:09:34includes a minimum of two bedrooms so Jean or her daughter can stay.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37A large kitchen/diner for those cooking lessons

0:09:37 > 0:09:41and a small garden where she can grow her own veg.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Jean, how good a cook is Jenny?

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I think she's excellent. It's lovely.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56You think this idea of doing some one-on-one cookery courses is going to work?

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Yeah, Jenny would be really good at that.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03I might be your first client because I can't cook at all, Jenny.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06- You'd be very welcome.- You could open your business with me.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10- That'd set me off. - If you can get me to cook properly,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12my husband would love you forever.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14We've travelled eight miles east of Looe

0:10:14 > 0:10:17to the popular village of St Germans.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Taking its name from its Norman Priory Church,

0:10:20 > 0:10:24the village has all the necessary amenities such as a pub

0:10:24 > 0:10:27and community shop which also acts as a Post Office.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30The Port Eliot estate next to the church

0:10:30 > 0:10:36hosts regular social events such as cookery days, ideal for Jenny.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Once two large cottages dating back around 200 years,

0:10:39 > 0:10:42this property has been converted into four smaller ones

0:10:42 > 0:10:47and the first house on our list is the end terrace cottage.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50So, ladies, here is our first property.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- It looks lovely.- It does, it does.

0:10:53 > 0:10:58This has got the original stone walls and slate roof.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00- I love the door.- I love the door, it's lovely, isn't it?

0:11:00 > 0:11:07Your dream of a country cottage in Cornwall - is this close so far?

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- It is.- It looks really nice.- It looks lovely from outside.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Shall we step in? Come on, ladies.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16So, the exterior is living up to Jenny's expectations

0:11:16 > 0:11:19and I think the cosy interior of this cottage

0:11:19 > 0:11:22could be just what she's looking for.

0:11:22 > 0:11:28Right, come on through. Jean, I'll let you get the door. Step inside.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32- Your cottage.- It looks very nice.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- Very nice.- It is, it's a lovely room. - Love the fireplace.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Noticed that straight away, didn't you?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41It's lovely and it's nice with a bit of a porch actually.

0:11:41 > 0:11:46Handy for coats and boots for all this walking that you're going to do when you move down here.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49- Yeah, that's true. I think everything would fit.- It would.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52It's also a different mindset, isn't it,

0:11:52 > 0:11:54because although you've been in your house a long time,

0:11:54 > 0:11:56you moved into it brand new.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00- This cottage was built in the early 1800s.- It's more me, actually.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02It is, definitely.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05- This is Jenny's dream cottage. - It is, really.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09It seems Jenny and Jean both love this home

0:12:09 > 0:12:12but part of Jenny's dream was giving cookery lessons

0:12:12 > 0:12:15so let's move on to the all-important kitchen.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17- How's this for size for you? - It's a good size.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- I think it is. - You've got a nice range there.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25The range actually provides the hot water and the heating for the cottage.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- That's good, isn't it? - Jean, do you like it?

0:12:28 > 0:12:31I do, I think it's lovely and you'd easily get your table there, Jenny.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33I think so.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37You'd have it folded down but if anyone comes, just open it up.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40- I'm liking this, girls. - You'd do that, of course.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42I think I'll leave them to it.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45They're already working out where the furniture's going to go.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49With Jenny all but moved in, we're making our way upstairs

0:12:49 > 0:12:53and first stop is the room she could be calling her own.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58The cottage has two bedrooms. This is the master.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02- It's very nice, it's a good size. - I love the window seat.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- Love the floor, nice floor. - It's gorgeous.

0:13:05 > 0:13:10- Original planks by the looks of it. It's very me.- Is it?- It is.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14- You could see her living here quite comfortably, could you?- I could.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15It's very me.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20Jenny's sorted but what about Jean when she stays?

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Well, the second bedroom is right next door

0:13:22 > 0:13:26and is almost as large and bright as the master.

0:13:26 > 0:13:31They can both share the small but perfectly formed bathroom.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Another thing on Jenny's wish list

0:13:33 > 0:13:36was a small and manageable garden with views

0:13:36 > 0:13:40so we're on the way to see what this property has to offer.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Outside, you've got this courtyard with a pretty little patio.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48There's a raised platform there that catches the sun in the afternoon.

0:13:48 > 0:13:49- It's very nice.- It is.

0:13:49 > 0:13:54I've got lots of pots in my garden so I could put lots of pots around.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58- Very pretty.- It is, isn't it? Low maintenance, isn't it?

0:13:58 > 0:14:00It is low maintenance.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04Don't fancy a little bit more of a challenge?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Well, you know, I could always get somebody to do it

0:14:07 > 0:14:09if I had a bit more of a challenge.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14Shall I show you? Your face, Jean! I love your face, come with me.

0:14:17 > 0:14:22Yes, there's more to the grounds here than meets the eye.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24A set of steps leads us up to the garden

0:14:24 > 0:14:28which is mainly laid to lawn and has views over the village and woodland.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Welcome to your secret garden.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33It's lovely. What a surprise.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36You wouldn't expect it to be up here and I was a little bit worried

0:14:36 > 0:14:40when you loved the patio so much and you wanted low maintenance.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42There's a little bit more up here but, Jean,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45I think this would be perfect for Jenny, don't you?

0:14:45 > 0:14:47- I think so. It's just right. - That's quite nice.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50It's less than mine, maintenance-wise,

0:14:50 > 0:14:51I would have thought.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54From this elevated position, not only do get the sunshine

0:14:54 > 0:14:57but you also get that view as well.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59It's a lovely view, it's beautiful.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02So, who wants to go first with guessing the price?

0:15:02 > 0:15:06Shall I go first? £220,000.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10- OK.- I would say 210.- Right.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15Its £236,950.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21- OK.- £7,000 over your budget. I think we're close to the coast

0:15:21 > 0:15:25and that's probably reflected in that price.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28- Has that surprised you?- It has, yeah, because it's two-bedroomed.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Why don't you have another look around the cottage

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- and I'll catch up with you in a little while.- OK.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39With a budget of £230,000,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41this house is nearly 7,000 over

0:15:41 > 0:15:45but it could be worth making an offer as properties in this area

0:15:45 > 0:15:50have been selling for around 6% lower than the asking price.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54All in all, this home has delivered everything on Jenny's list.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57It's a lovely period cottage with a kitchen/diner

0:15:57 > 0:16:01big enough for those cookery lessons. It has two bedrooms

0:16:01 > 0:16:05and outside there's a manageable garden with great views.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Kitchen's a nice size, Jean.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12Nice and square but it would need a refurb, really, wouldn't it?

0:16:12 > 0:16:16- I think so.- I'd keep the range. I think that's really nice.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Once you've done the kitchen, would it be ideal for teaching cookery?

0:16:19 > 0:16:23It would because I'd have some sort of surface over there

0:16:23 > 0:16:27for demonstrating and people doing their own thing.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29- It's good.- It would work.

0:16:29 > 0:16:35It's really nice - stone cottage, lovely valley, lots of trees, all the things I love.

0:16:35 > 0:16:41I feel that this is really near to what I'd like to buy.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45Just needs to be a little bit lower in price for me.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48But it's lovely. I like it very much.

0:16:48 > 0:16:54This house fits the bill perfectly for Jenny. She's always wanted a stone cottage in a village,

0:16:54 > 0:16:56and the view is lovely.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00A lovely rural view. It's really nice. Yeah, it's a good start.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Right, girls, seen enough? Happy?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Yes, it's lovely. I think we're almost there.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- Great start. What do you think? - It's brilliant, yeah.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16- Can you imagine her living there? - I can. It's really nice. Pretty.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20- Good. We've got more to show you as well. Come on, then.- Good.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34Back in the 15th century, Looe was one of Cornwall's largest

0:17:34 > 0:17:36and most important ports,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39as well as the centre for fishing and boat-building.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43The Looe Estuary divides the town in two, and in 1411,

0:17:43 > 0:17:48the first estuary bridge in Cornwall was built here to link east and west Looe.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52Today, while remaining a fishing community,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Looe's main industry is tourism and, of course,

0:17:54 > 0:17:58no visit to Cornwall would be complete without sampling

0:17:58 > 0:18:01at least one of the county's world famous pasties.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05So, we sent Jean and Jenny, herself an accomplished cook,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08not only to try one, but to learn how they're made.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11We arranged for them to meet Lucy Taylor from a local shop,

0:18:11 > 0:18:16where they've made traditional Cornish pasties for 22 years.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17Good morning, ladies.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- Good morning.- Smells lovely! - Thank you.- Looks lovely.- Thank you.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23- Really nicely displayed.- Today, I think we're going to show you

0:18:23 > 0:18:27- how to make a real, traditional Cornish pasty.- Oh, brilliant. - Look forward to showing you.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30So, do you want to follow me through and I'll show you how it's done?

0:18:30 > 0:18:32- OK.- Will do.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35The first evidence of the pasty as a Cornish food was found

0:18:35 > 0:18:38in an agricultural survey of Cornwall from 1808.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41By the end of the century,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44pasties had already become the staple diet of tin miners

0:18:44 > 0:18:48and farm workers due to their unique shape,

0:18:48 > 0:18:53forming a complete meal that could be carried easily and eaten without cutlery.

0:18:53 > 0:18:58The traditional pasty is made using a cut of beef called skirt,

0:18:58 > 0:19:03which is taken from the animal's belly area, and prized for its flavour.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07So we've got some pastry here. This is a shortcrust pastry.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09It's not a heavy pastry.

0:19:09 > 0:19:14- It's rested overnight, so it works really well.- Yeah.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20They we are. I'll just flour your surface for you.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24- For you, Jenny.- Thank you.

0:19:24 > 0:19:28So, first of all, we've got potato and swede here

0:19:28 > 0:19:31that's mixed with some seasoning - salt and ground black pepper.

0:19:31 > 0:19:36So a handful of potato and swede first.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Plenty of meat. You want a nice line of it through the middle,

0:19:39 > 0:19:42- so that when you're eating it, you get a...- Just through the middle.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44..a nice mouthful.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49Then, some diced onion, and then some more potato

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- and swede on the top. This is seasoned as well.- Right.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59There's really a lot of filling, isn't there?

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- Yeah, there's a nice lot of meat in there.- There's loads.

0:20:01 > 0:20:06Once the pasty is filled, it's time to seal and crimp it.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10You pull the pastry together, and then it's a bit like pleating.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13You're pulling one piece of pastry over your thumb and moving it along,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15like a pinching motion.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19Following a nine-year campaign by the Cornish Pasty Association,

0:20:19 > 0:20:25the name "Cornish pasty" was recently awarded protected geographical indication,

0:20:25 > 0:20:29or PGI status, by the European Commission.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33According to this status, a Cornish pasty should be shaped like a D

0:20:33 > 0:20:36and crimped on one side, not on the top.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40It also states that pasties must be prepared in Cornwall,

0:20:40 > 0:20:42just like Jenny and Jean's.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46- Very good for a first attempt. - Oh, look at that!- Well done.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49- Haven't made one since I was at school!- Oh, really?

0:20:49 > 0:20:53With a glazing of egg added to give it that golden colour,

0:20:53 > 0:20:57our authentic Cornish pasties are cooked for around 55 minutes.

0:20:57 > 0:21:02And Sarah, the owner of the shop, has offered to give her verdict

0:21:02 > 0:21:06on Jenny and Jean's first attempt at the local speciality.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09- I think they've passed the test, do you?- SARAH:- I think they have!

0:21:09 > 0:21:12So now Jenny's proven her skills in the art of baking,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15it's time to turn up the heat on our house search,

0:21:15 > 0:21:19as we hit the road to find her dream cottage.

0:21:22 > 0:21:27We've travelled around 20 miles northeast of Looe to the village of Stoke Climsland,

0:21:27 > 0:21:32a community in the Tamar Valley with a 15th century church,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34a local shop which doubles as a post office,

0:21:34 > 0:21:36and a sports and social club,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39which hosts some very interesting nights' entertainment.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42Our second house is a Grade II listed cottage,

0:21:42 > 0:21:44once the property of the Duchy of Cornwall,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47and dating back to the 1800s.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51So we've travelled a little bit further inland,

0:21:51 > 0:21:54- and here is your second property. - Looks lovely.- It's cute.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- It is, yeah.- Looks very nice.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59- Looks big and solid and cottagey. - Yeah.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- Good!- Very cute. - So, keen to get inside?

0:22:02 > 0:22:04- We are.- Yeah.- Come on, then.- Good.

0:22:04 > 0:22:08It might look like a typical cottage from the outside,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11but once we get inside, Jenny and Jean will soon discover

0:22:11 > 0:22:15there's something extraordianry about this property.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Come on in, girls. Look at this beautiful old floor.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21- It's lovely, isn't it? - Well done, Jean, get that door.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Come on through.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26'And right about now, they probably expect to see a sitting room.'

0:22:26 > 0:22:31Now, this cottage is unusual because it's an upside down house.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34It's inverted, so the living room accomodation is upstairs,

0:22:34 > 0:22:37and the two double bedrooms are downstairs.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40- That's quite unusual. - Yeah, it is, actually.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44You probably noticed, there's not an awful lot of storage in this room.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48But cleverly, under the bed, there's plenty.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52It's a built-in bed, isn't it, so you wouldn't be able to get your own bed in here, would you?

0:22:52 > 0:22:55- You've got a double bedroom right at the front of the cottage.- Oh!

0:22:55 > 0:22:58- That's quite unusual. Doesn't matter, does it?- It is, actually.

0:22:58 > 0:23:03So you don't mind the idea of perhaps sleeping downstairs?

0:23:03 > 0:23:04No, it's not a problem.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07And literally, the downstairs shower room is just down the hallway,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11- but, I want to take you two straight upstairs.- OK.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16'So now we're heading up to the living area which has a kitchen

0:23:16 > 0:23:21'that I think will be the perfect place to give cookery lessons.'

0:23:21 > 0:23:22Oh, wow!

0:23:22 > 0:23:26- This is lovely.- This is the reason... - Isn't this lovely?

0:23:26 > 0:23:30- This is really lovely.- Come through. - It's really nice!- It is.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32So this is the reason the bedrooms are downstairs.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- Oh, look at the view. Look! - Beautiful.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37Oh, that's lovely!

0:23:37 > 0:23:40Being at the kitchen now, and your work surface there.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42- That is very nice. - Yeah, wouldn't that be great?

0:23:42 > 0:23:46I can just see you, Jenny, doing your demonstrating now. Cooking.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48I can see me there as well!

0:23:48 > 0:23:50- Look at the wood, it's lovely! - It's wonderful.

0:23:50 > 0:23:56And I love the thick walls, the brickwork...the beams.

0:23:56 > 0:24:01- Does it feel homely?- It's lovely. - It's a good size. It's really nice.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04You can imagine yourself here, you know,

0:24:04 > 0:24:08with all the food and friends and fire alight.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11- Lovely.- So what would your daughter say if she saw this?

0:24:11 > 0:24:14- She'd say, "Mum, buy it!"- Ooh!

0:24:14 > 0:24:18- That's pretty definite! - Yeah, it's lovely. It's me.- Is it?

0:24:18 > 0:24:20The other one was me, but this is more me.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24This upside down property has edged ahead,

0:24:24 > 0:24:28but it's got another surprise for Jean and Jenny up another flight of stairs.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34- Well, that's unexpected. - It's unbelievable, isn't it?

0:24:34 > 0:24:35It's lovely. Another floor!

0:24:35 > 0:24:38- And look, you can see your front room down there.- Yeah.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41It's roomy as well.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44So, my question to you two is, what would you do with this floor?

0:24:44 > 0:24:46Um...

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I'd probably have this as a bedroom.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52I think, like, when you're doing the cookery school, they could sleep up here.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56- Yeah.- And have a bed up here, for them.- Yeah, it would be a bedroom.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59When you think of a traditional Cornish cottage...

0:24:59 > 0:25:01it's not like this, is it?

0:25:01 > 0:25:03From the outside, it just doesn't look it.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07I mean, it's lovely and old-fashioned, but modern as well.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11- Surpassed your expectations? - It has surpassed my expectations.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Lovely.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16Well, that's a great result,

0:25:16 > 0:25:20'as Jenny seems to be really excited by this cottage.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22'So can the garden match up?'

0:25:22 > 0:25:27While it's not the largest, it's got plenty of room for growing veg, and should be easy to manage.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31Here, you've got a lovely, enclosed, south-facing garden.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35- Love it. Like the rose beds. - I think it's lovely.

0:25:35 > 0:25:40So, all very positive, you're both making the right noises for me. Guess what's coming next?

0:25:40 > 0:25:44How much is this wonderful cottage on the market for?

0:25:44 > 0:25:47I think it's probably over-budget.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53- I don't know... - Don't look at me like that!- 240.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57- 240, OK. And your budget is?- 230. - OK, Jean.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00I think it's 230,000.

0:26:00 > 0:26:04If I said it was under-budget by £20,000...

0:26:04 > 0:26:07- BOTH:- No!- That's good, isn't it? - That's great!

0:26:07 > 0:26:11- Would you be delighted?- Yeah. - I'd be delighted for Jenny, I would.

0:26:11 > 0:26:18- That'd be great.- Well, it has JUST come down in price to £210,000.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21- That is fantastic. - That's very tempting.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23Let me see your face, cos you're looking at the house!

0:26:23 > 0:26:27- Is that delight? Are you thinking things through?- Yeah, it's lovely.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Are we really close?- Yeah, yeah.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34- As close, probably, as you'll ever get.- How fantastic!- It's lovely.

0:26:34 > 0:26:39Hands up who wants to go and have another look around that cottage? Go on, then, girls, off you go.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Have fun! Take as long as you like.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46Under-budget at £210,000,

0:26:46 > 0:26:51this unusual cottage delivers handsomely on all Jenny's demands.

0:26:51 > 0:26:52It has...

0:27:05 > 0:27:09- So, what do you think, is this it?- I do. I do think it's it.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12- It's lovely.- Yeah, it is. It's very me.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15- I was getting emotional for you. - I know, I saw you, you were crying.

0:27:15 > 0:27:19I think this cottage, for Jenny, is near-on perfect.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22It's very spacious, the kitchen,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25and it's just ideal for what she has in mind - for teaching cookery.

0:27:25 > 0:27:30Wow! As I walked through the door, I just thought, "Wow!"

0:27:30 > 0:27:33Going into the bedrooms, I just thought they were lovely.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37And then when we went upstairs, it was overwhelming, really.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40It's everything I probably ever dreamed I'd get.

0:27:40 > 0:27:45And I can see family and friends really enjoying visiting me here.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49Not wanting to sound smug, but I think we've done pretty well today.

0:27:49 > 0:27:53- Right, ladies! My girls, have you seen enough?- We have.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55- Yes, it's lovely.- Yeah?

0:27:55 > 0:27:58You said that in unison, so that is a thumbs up, yeah.

0:27:58 > 0:28:02Got to drag you away now. Come on.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15As evening falls over Cornwall, it's the end of day one

0:28:15 > 0:28:19of our search for the cottage of Jenny's dreams.

0:28:23 > 0:28:28Jenny from Orpington in Kent is about to retire,

0:28:28 > 0:28:30and with friend Jean for moral support,

0:28:30 > 0:28:34she's hoping the fantasy of country living she's held for 30 years

0:28:34 > 0:28:36can come true in Cornwall.

0:28:36 > 0:28:41'We've seen two properties so far that have both come very close to perfection.

0:28:41 > 0:28:46'But, coming up, is our mystery house a project too far for Jenny?'

0:28:46 > 0:28:51- I mean, if you had enough money, this could be beautiful.- It could.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55And I get on-board the new wave of surfing.

0:28:58 > 0:29:02For Jenny, with her best friend Jean along for moral support,

0:29:02 > 0:29:07this move to the south of Cornwall represents a lifelong dream.

0:29:07 > 0:29:12Mindful of her budget, yesterday, we showed them two period cottages.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15The first was quite near to the coast,

0:29:15 > 0:29:19and, although well-received, was slightly over her budget.

0:29:19 > 0:29:22The second one, this time more inland, well...

0:29:22 > 0:29:25They both seemed to love it.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28So today, it's now time for our mystery house,

0:29:28 > 0:29:33and to be honest, I'm not quite sure how it's going to go down.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36We've travelled further along the Cornish coast,

0:29:36 > 0:29:4015 miles west of Looe, to the village of St Blazey.

0:29:40 > 0:29:41With a population of 6,000,

0:29:41 > 0:29:45its high street has all the amenities Jenny will need.

0:29:45 > 0:29:50Our mystery house is the closest to the coast of the three properties we've seen.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52Dating back to 1840,

0:29:52 > 0:29:55it has real potential to be the cottage of her dreams.

0:29:55 > 0:29:58As a self-confessed DIY novice,

0:29:58 > 0:30:02she may need some professional help to make this her perfect home.

0:30:04 > 0:30:09So, ladies, this is...the mystery house.

0:30:09 > 0:30:13- It's lovely.- Looks good. Very nice. - It does.- Very tranquil.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15So why is it our mystery house?

0:30:15 > 0:30:19- No idea at all.- No.- The P word?

0:30:19 > 0:30:23- Bit of a project, perhaps? - Oh, right!- Project.- Yeah.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26- Oh, look at the reactions. None! - THEY LAUGH

0:30:26 > 0:30:30- So...- Project and price. - Project AND price. I like that!

0:30:30 > 0:30:32So I think we need open minds.

0:30:32 > 0:30:36- Shall we start the tour? - Yes.- Come on.

0:30:36 > 0:30:41'The P word probably wasn't what Jenny wanted to hear, but I hope

0:30:41 > 0:30:44'she gives this cottage a chance when we step through the door.

0:30:44 > 0:30:48'After all, first impressions were very favourable.'

0:30:48 > 0:30:52So welcome to your mystery cottage.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54I said a little bit of a project.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58Probably, you can glean that as we walk straight into the kitchen.

0:30:58 > 0:31:05The positives are the woodburner. I like the chimney breast.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09- You've got the size here. You could have the kitchen of your dreams. - Very good size, yeah.

0:31:09 > 0:31:15- I mean, if you had enough money, this could be beautiful.- It could!

0:31:15 > 0:31:19Has Jenny got the enthusiasm and the character to take on a project?

0:31:19 > 0:31:23- I don't know. You can...- Breathe in and breathe out, basically.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26What does that mean, "Breathe in and breathe out?"

0:31:26 > 0:31:29- That's as much as she can manage! - THEY LAUGH

0:31:29 > 0:31:33So, it doesn't sound like Jenny's up for breathing new life into

0:31:33 > 0:31:38this property just yet, but I'm not giving up.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42Maybe this next room can help convince her to give it a try.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44So here's your sitting room.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47- It's a two-up, two-down, in a way, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49- Yes, isn't it?- But not bad sizes.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53- Yeah, and I like the fireplace. - That's lovely, isn't it?

0:31:53 > 0:31:55- Very pretty.- Yes.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59- Now, having lived in a modern house for, what, 30 years?- Yes, from new.

0:31:59 > 0:32:01How does it feel, you know,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04that adjustment moving into something that's this old?

0:32:04 > 0:32:08It would be great if, you know, you had the money to do it up, I think.

0:32:08 > 0:32:13I mean, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a typical little cottage.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16You know, the windows on each side, the door in the middle.

0:32:16 > 0:32:19It's nice, but it does need an awful lot doing to it.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Jean could bring her tool kit with her when she comes down to stay.

0:32:22 > 0:32:27- Yeah, she could, but I don't suppose she'd do much with it.- Probably not.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Well, the answer could be to get

0:32:29 > 0:32:31someone in to help with the renovations.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34That is if the price is right

0:32:34 > 0:32:37and Jenny falls in love with the rest of this cottage.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40Off the landing there's two good sized double bedrooms,

0:32:40 > 0:32:43so there's a room for Jean to stay.

0:32:43 > 0:32:48A bright family bathroom, all with those fantastic sash windows.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51The bedroom we're looking at is the master.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53- Views overlooking the garden. - That's very pretty.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56- It is lovely, yeah.- Nice size room. - It is a nice size room.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00- Nice fireplace.- Yeah.- The cottage does have potential, doesn't it?

0:33:00 > 0:33:05Oh, definitely. I mean, for somebody that's good at

0:33:05 > 0:33:08DIY or a builder, it's a little gem.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11So, have you ever had to do up a house from scratch, either of you?

0:33:11 > 0:33:12No, I haven't.

0:33:12 > 0:33:16I had to have a house done up after a fire and it was horrendous.

0:33:16 > 0:33:20So something like this is a big project again.

0:33:20 > 0:33:24- Is it bringing back memories? - Yes, horrible memories.- OK.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27Well, on that note, we're going to head outside.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31So, with memories like that, it's going to be hard to shift

0:33:31 > 0:33:34Jenny's mindset into welcoming this renovation project.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37'But I'm not giving up hope

0:33:37 > 0:33:40'because she hasn't seen the lovely garden yet.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44'It comes with a secluded patio, lush expanse of lawn

0:33:44 > 0:33:46'and a variety of shrubs and fruit trees.'

0:33:48 > 0:33:52So this period cottage actually has, I think, quite a large garden.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56Yeah, it's lovely. I like it. You know, nice mature trees. The garden's lovely.

0:33:56 > 0:34:00If I had loads of money, I might think about the house.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02Which leads me on to money, doesn't it?

0:34:02 > 0:34:06How much do you both think this period cottage is on the market for?

0:34:07 > 0:34:11I think £175,000.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13OK. Jenny?

0:34:13 > 0:34:16Look at you, studying that cottage.

0:34:17 > 0:34:23- I think about £180,000. - It's a little bit more than that.

0:34:23 > 0:34:29- It's actually on the market for £195,000.- Wow!

0:34:29 > 0:34:33- So that would leave you some in the budget.- Yeah.- To do it up.- Yeah.

0:34:33 > 0:34:38- £35,000. As you say, if that's just too much of a project for you. - Yeah.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40It's a project too far.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42Why don't you have another look around anyway

0:34:42 > 0:34:45because you can always get ideas from properties.

0:34:45 > 0:34:49- We all agree it is a cute little period cottage, isn't it?- It is.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51- It's just too much of a project for you.- Yes, it is.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54Which is fair enough, but thank you for looking at our mystery house.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56- Off you go, girls.- OK.

0:34:57 > 0:35:04Well, under budget at £195,000, this property certainly has

0:35:04 > 0:35:07the potential to be Jenny's dream cottage.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10It has space downstairs to create her perfect kitchen,

0:35:10 > 0:35:15two good sized bedrooms and a low maintenance garden.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18When I first saw the mystery house I thought it was very pretty,

0:35:18 > 0:35:20very cottagey,

0:35:20 > 0:35:24but I sort of thought it probably needed quite a bit doing to it.

0:35:24 > 0:35:29I think, even with a budget of £35,000,

0:35:29 > 0:35:32it would probably take more than that.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35It would take a long time to do, more's to the point.

0:35:35 > 0:35:39I don't want a great big project now, not at this time of life.

0:35:39 > 0:35:42I do think Jenny's going to have to make some compromises.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46I can't see her in this house at all. No.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50The garden, but not the house.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Come on, girls.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56Has the mystery house made you change your mind?

0:35:56 > 0:35:59- No, I'm afraid not.- No?- Not for me. - I don't think so.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03- But enjoyed one final look around it?- Yeah, it's been good. - Yeah, it was good.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05That's it now. We've shown you all three properties.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09Let's go somewhere quiet, you two can have a chat, and let me

0:36:09 > 0:36:11know what conclusions you've come to.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26The stirring seas around Cornwall

0:36:26 > 0:36:30provide some of the best surfing conditions in Europe.

0:36:30 > 0:36:34It's little wonder that in the early 1960s,

0:36:34 > 0:36:37Cornwall was the first part of mainland Britain to embrace

0:36:37 > 0:36:41the surfing culture, while Newquay, on the north coast,

0:36:41 > 0:36:43is known as the surf capital

0:36:43 > 0:36:47to the UK's 250,000 surfers, the south coast beaches at Praa Sands

0:36:47 > 0:36:52and Porthleven are also extremely popular.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56But, there's a new type of surfing currently making waves.

0:36:56 > 0:36:57Stand up paddle boarding

0:36:57 > 0:37:01is one of the fastest growing watersports in the world.

0:37:01 > 0:37:04I've come to the beach in Looe to find out more about it

0:37:04 > 0:37:08from Martin Connolly, a top-rated British surfer with 12 years

0:37:08 > 0:37:12experience as a coach and lifeguard on Australian and local beaches.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16- Martin, hello. Good to meet you. - Hi there, good to see you.

0:37:16 > 0:37:18Now, I hope I'm in good hands today.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- Yeah, you are definitely in safe hands.- Good. I have tried surfing.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25- Yeah.- I wasn't very good. I couldn't actually get onto the board.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27- So, hopefully, this will be a little easier.- Yeah.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29These boards are nice and buoyant

0:37:29 > 0:37:31and we've got some really nice conditions out there.

0:37:31 > 0:37:33So that'll definitely make it favourable.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36You don't have to be super fit to do it, you just have to be able to swim, right?

0:37:36 > 0:37:39Yeah, you need to be able to swim.

0:37:39 > 0:37:43It helps to have good balance and upper body strength.

0:37:43 > 0:37:45You kind of have a good workout.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48You can make it as much of a workout as you want.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51Good tuition, good teacher. What's the first thing I need to learn?

0:37:51 > 0:37:55Right, we're just going to go through a couple of techniques.

0:37:55 > 0:37:59- Now, look at my feet. Not a parallel, just a slight angle. OK?- Yes.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03That's really good. You'll probably find it easier to have your strongest hand

0:38:03 > 0:38:08in the middle, like that, and your weaker hand is going to go on the T-bar, sort of there.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11Just have a feel for that. Now, the wider the grip,

0:38:11 > 0:38:13the more power you're going to get out of the paddle.

0:38:13 > 0:38:17So bend your knees slightly and just pull with your middle hand

0:38:17 > 0:38:19and push over the top with your top hand.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23The more water you can move, the faster you're going to go

0:38:23 > 0:38:25and the easier it is to balance. That's perfect. OK.

0:38:25 > 0:38:30Now, to swap sides, you have to actually swap your grip like this.

0:38:30 > 0:38:34Just get a feel for that. Again, the paddle's going to be along the rail.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37As you go in to paddle, just bend your knees a little bit

0:38:37 > 0:38:38so you can get more power.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41So as you go down, bend your knees and then come back up.

0:38:41 > 0:38:45- Perfect, perfect.- Keep your knees, sort of, flexible.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48You're in the perfect stance there.

0:38:48 > 0:38:50If you can do that in the water, you'll be absolutely sweet, OK?

0:38:50 > 0:38:53If I can do this on the water without going in, I'll be delighted.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55Easier to learn than surfing,

0:38:55 > 0:39:00stand up paddle board lessons can be taken by individuals of any age,

0:39:00 > 0:39:04from 10 to 70, as long as they're confident swimmers.

0:39:04 > 0:39:07The main attraction of the sport is that it can be done when

0:39:07 > 0:39:11the surf is down and apparently, women can often be more skilled

0:39:11 > 0:39:15at it than men, due to their lower centre of gravity.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17Well, we'll see!

0:39:17 > 0:39:19WAVES CRASH

0:39:19 > 0:39:23The origins of stand-up paddle boarding can be traced back

0:39:23 > 0:39:24to 1950s Hawaii,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27with a group of watermen who worked the beaches of Waikiki,

0:39:27 > 0:39:30offering surfing lessons and canoe rides.

0:39:30 > 0:39:34Known as the Waikiki Beach Boys, they would stand on long boards,

0:39:34 > 0:39:38taking pictures of the tourists learning to surf.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41For this reason, stand-up paddle boarding is sometimes

0:39:41 > 0:39:43known as beach boy surfing.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46The British Stand-up Paddle Association

0:39:46 > 0:39:48is the national body for the sport.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51They advise that you should take a lesson to learn the basics,

0:39:51 > 0:39:54keep your board tethered to your ankle by its leash

0:39:54 > 0:39:58so you don't lose it, and use a lifeguarded beach.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00Although there are a few regular competitions,

0:40:00 > 0:40:04stand-up paddle boarding is more of a leisure pastime

0:40:04 > 0:40:06and a great way to explore the water.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14Well, that was great fun, but yes,

0:40:14 > 0:40:16it was as cold as it looked.

0:40:16 > 0:40:20Now our house hunt here in the south of Cornwall is over.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24We've shown Jenny and Jean three fabulous period cottages,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26but have any of them won them over?

0:40:26 > 0:40:27Shall we go and ask them?

0:40:35 > 0:40:39Well, ladies, that is it. The house hunt is over.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41Three decades you have waited to move to Cornwall.

0:40:41 > 0:40:45- Have we put you off? - No, not at all.- Good!

0:40:45 > 0:40:48So, let's start off with that very first property we showed you,

0:40:48 > 0:40:52the cottage in St Germans, not that far from the coast actually.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54It was just up the estuary.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56I loved it. I thought it was in a beautiful location.

0:40:56 > 0:41:00You looked out and all you saw were trees.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04The cottage itself was lovely, really liked it,

0:41:04 > 0:41:06nice sized rooms.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10- It was just a bit too expensive for me.- OK.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14Moving on... for our second property, we took you inland.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17We're going to start with you, Jean. It's quite deceiving,

0:41:17 > 0:41:20- wasn't it, from the outside? - It was excellent.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22You just thought it was a little two-up two-down,

0:41:22 > 0:41:24but it was just amazing.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26And what about you, Jenny, with that second one?

0:41:26 > 0:41:29Well, I absolutely loved it.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31I loved the inside of it, I loved the garden.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35The kitchen was to die for, but unfortunately,

0:41:35 > 0:41:38- I didn't like the village. - Did you not?

0:41:38 > 0:41:41What was it about the village that you weren't taken with?

0:41:41 > 0:41:43- It wasn't very big.- Right.

0:41:43 > 0:41:46Because it's going to be my forever home,

0:41:46 > 0:41:50I'd like a bit more life, really.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53That was the most fantastic property.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55It was everything I want.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Finally, we tried something a bit different with our mystery.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01I wasn't sure how it was going to go.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05That was very different, again a lovely house,

0:42:05 > 0:42:08nice location. But just too much to do.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10There was no way on earth

0:42:10 > 0:42:14that I could get that done and even if I had the money,

0:42:14 > 0:42:16it would be a bit of the budget

0:42:16 > 0:42:19and I think it probably needs far, far more spending on it.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23But what it did demonstrate is that you can still live in this

0:42:23 > 0:42:27beautiful part of the world and buy a property for under £200,000,

0:42:27 > 0:42:29which I thought was very interesting.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31There are still bargains out there to be had.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35So I think, in a way, I know what your next move is going to be,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38but I want you to tell me.

0:42:38 > 0:42:43Well, I shall come down and rent and then search.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45Well, whatever happens, you're moving here very soon,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48- so your dream has come true. - Yeah, it has, yeah.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51- All the best.- Thank You. - Thanks for your help.

0:42:55 > 0:42:56We got close.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59We got this close to finding Jenny

0:42:59 > 0:43:02the perfect Cornish cottage.

0:43:02 > 0:43:03Whatever happens,

0:43:03 > 0:43:07we wish her all the best with her move here to Cornwall.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10Until next time, bye-bye.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13If you'd like to escape to the country in Scotland, Wales,

0:43:13 > 0:43:17Northern Ireland or England, and need our help,
