0:01:13 > 0:01:17which from the 1500s produced scythes and cutting tools

0:01:17 > 0:01:19for around four centuries.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Well, the iron forges and the knife-sharpening mills

0:01:22 > 0:01:24produced tools that were shipped all over the world.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27In fact, they were used to clear the Everglades in the USA.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31Mechanisation came along and the industry dwindled.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35Back in 1968, Belbroughton here saw its final mill close forever.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39Well, the industry may be gone but as far as the countryside's concerned,

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Worcestershire is still a cut above the rest.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47The county of Worcestershire is bordered by Herefordshire

0:01:47 > 0:01:48to the west, Gloucestershire to the south,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50and Warwickshire to the east.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56While the north of the county is home to conurbations such as Kidderminster and Bromsgrove,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59head south and you'll discover its rural heart

0:01:59 > 0:02:01around the towns of Malvern and Evesham

0:02:01 > 0:02:04which are famed for their mineral water and asparagus production.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07But it is Worcester, holding court in the middle,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10that ties the two halves of the county together -

0:02:10 > 0:02:15the birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar and home of Royal Worcester porcelain.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18It's also the city that Churchill's government planned

0:02:18 > 0:02:21to decamp to in the event of a Nazi invasion.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25It would appear that we're not the first to think that Worcestershire

0:02:25 > 0:02:27is the perfect place to escape to the country.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33The cost of an average detached property here in Worcestershire

0:02:33 > 0:02:39is around £260,000. That's roughly £6,000 above national average.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40For this price, you could be looking

0:02:40 > 0:02:43at locations like the pretty market town of Malvern or Pershore,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45lovely, they are.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47If you want something a little bit more spectacular,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50then head south in the county towards the Cotswolds.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53But here, let me warn you that detached properties

0:02:53 > 0:02:56are highly sought-after and bargains hard to come by.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59But Worcestershire is most definitely a county

0:02:59 > 0:03:01with charm and character.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Head to the north of the county to villages like Bewdley,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and you'll find fantastic timbered properties,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09some dating back to the 17th century.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11A house of this style with four bedrooms

0:03:11 > 0:03:16typically costs from around £300,000-£425,000.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20If that's too much space for you then the honey stone cottages

0:03:20 > 0:03:23of the Cotswolds may be a better option.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Here, from around £275,000 to £375,000,

0:03:27 > 0:03:31you'll get just two bedrooms but with buckets of charm.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35If land is your top priority, then the fields of Worcester

0:03:35 > 0:03:37offer an array of traditional farmhouses.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41Expect to pay upwards of £800,000 for one of these,

0:03:41 > 0:03:44especially if you want plenty of acres to play with.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49So, what are we looking for? Let's meet the buyers.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Peter and Susan have lived in their four-bedroomed house

0:03:52 > 0:03:56in the busy town of Ulverston in Cumbria for the past 33 years,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58having originally made the move from the Isle Of Man.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02But now Peter has retired from his banking job,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04and Sue has given up her career as a health worker,

0:04:04 > 0:04:08they're planning on a new challenge in the shape of a countryside business,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10in the county of Worcestershire.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Something that I've wanted to do for quite a while and thought about

0:04:14 > 0:04:17is running a self-catering business,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20so that we would like to have a house either with an annexe

0:04:20 > 0:04:25or some cottages in the garden or some outbuildings we could convert

0:04:25 > 0:04:27and do self-catering holidays.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Well, they're certainly not after the quiet life.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32And along with a new commercial venture,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35family unity is also a key consideration.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Part of the reason we want to move to the Worcester area

0:04:38 > 0:04:40is I'll be nearer my sister.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43She has a son, Ashley, who's got Down's syndrome,

0:04:43 > 0:04:46and it would be really nice to give her a break

0:04:46 > 0:04:49so that she can have a bit more freedom to go off on holiday

0:04:49 > 0:04:54without having to find carers and that Ashley would be happy to come to us and we'd be happy to have him.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56So, a welcoming home for all the family

0:04:56 > 0:05:00and space for paying guests is high on the agenda.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03But that's not quite the end of the property wish list.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05We don't really want a huge garden,

0:05:05 > 0:05:10maybe half an acre, something where we could have a vegetable patch

0:05:10 > 0:05:11and grow a few flowers.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14And I would like to have a garage there.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16I've got half a dozen bikes

0:05:16 > 0:05:18and we've got a nice car outside

0:05:18 > 0:05:21which we want to have covered up for a change.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Keeping the car pristine is one thing,

0:05:23 > 0:05:26however, it's Peter and Susan's joint passion for pedal power

0:05:26 > 0:05:28that really gets their hearts racing.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I got into cycling when I lived in the Isle Of Man.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Some years later, I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Commonwealth Games

0:05:36 > 0:05:40or the Empire Games as it was known in those days.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44And I went to Australia in December 1962.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I got into cycling because of Peter.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50He encouraged me to do it and it's really enjoyable,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52it's something we can do together.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56And you can see so much more from a bicycle than you can from a car!

0:05:56 > 0:06:00And they both think diving feet-first into community life

0:06:00 > 0:06:02will be a vital step in their success.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06We had some good advice, didn't we, when we moved from the Isle Of Man,

0:06:06 > 0:06:07that..."join everything!"

0:06:07 > 0:06:12It's important to get stuck in with whatever's on offer, really.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Don't want to just be "those people from up North who never speak to anybody"!

0:06:18 > 0:06:20I don't think there's much chance of that.

0:06:20 > 0:06:21So let's talk money.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Our budget for this move is £600,000.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Peter and Susan are particularly keen on living

0:06:31 > 0:06:35within a 20-mile radius of Susan's sister in the village of Welland,

0:06:35 > 0:06:40which lies 16 miles west of Evesham and 11 miles south of Worcester.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44I caught up with them on Worcestershire soil to discover more about their rural move.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Well, both, welcome to Worcestershire, the Malvern Hills.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- Quite nice, isn't it?- It's lovely. - Beautiful, isn't it?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53- Why this area in particular? - Well, we're both retired now

0:06:53 > 0:06:57and we've sort of had where we've lived imposed on us in the past

0:06:57 > 0:07:00so this is somewhere where we would choose to live.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03And also, I've got family down here.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Er, I want to start a business up as well

0:07:06 > 0:07:10so we want to have a self-catering annexe

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- or self-catering something in the garden.- Right.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16So that's the new career, as it were.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20This is for you, so we've got to find something you really want.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25Yes, yes. So we're hoping for a house with at least three bedrooms,

0:07:25 > 0:07:29the annexe is very important, or the self-catering.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33- Nice big kitchen...- How did I know you were going to say that?!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- It's the heart of the home, isn't it? - Is he the cook?

0:08:50 > 0:08:52We're travelling 12 miles east of Worcester,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54near to the village of Inkberrow.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57It's one of Worcestershire's largest villages and is home

0:08:57 > 0:08:59to two traditional British pubs,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02a well-stocked local shop, and a church that dates back

0:09:02 > 0:09:03to the 13th century.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Just south of Inkberrow is the beautiful village of Abbots Morton,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10one of the county's oldest settlements

0:09:10 > 0:09:15which is chock full of half-timbered 17th and 18th-century buildings.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- So, this is the village of Abbots Morton.- Very nice.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23It's so quiet. Where we were before, we could always hear the road.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Yes.- This is just perfect. - Yes, lots of traffic.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53the Vale of Evesham is often referred to as the fruit basket of England.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56In the heart of the vale, on the banks of the river Avon,

0:15:56 > 0:16:00is the historic town of Evesham, a trading hub for local growers

0:16:00 > 0:16:04since being granted its market charter in 1603.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08In the 1800s, the area was noted for its pears and apples,

0:16:08 > 0:16:11but by 1910, plums were the main crop.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15In the spring, the vale's flowering apple and plum trees

0:16:15 > 0:16:17come into their own, and the orchards can be explored,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20thanks to a designated Blossom Trail,

0:16:20 > 0:16:24a 45-mile route that takes in the towns of Evesham and Pershore,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27as well as the Cotswold village of Broadway.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30We sent keen cyclists Peter and Susan to meet

0:16:30 > 0:16:35horticultural crops consultant John Edgeley to take a tour on two wheels

0:16:35 > 0:16:38and discover more about the vale's plum-growing heritage.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41So is it a particularly good area for growing plums?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44It's a very sheltered area, sheltered by the Cotswolds

0:16:44 > 0:16:46and the Malvern Hills.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48We've got deep, fertile clay soils as well,

0:16:48 > 0:16:50very moisture-retentive.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52And, of course, we're close to conurbations

0:16:52 > 0:16:56like Birmingham and the West Midlands as well to buy the fruit.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58Worcestershire's orchards, including those along the trail,

0:16:58 > 0:17:02have declined by over 75% in the last 50 years.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06This is mainly due to redevelopment of land for housing

0:17:06 > 0:17:08and the increase in imported fruit from abroad.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12However, schemes such as the Vale Landscape Heritage Trust,

0:17:12 > 0:17:14manned by local volunteers, have been set up

0:17:14 > 0:17:16to rescue the old orchards.

0:17:16 > 0:17:21This is Hipton Hill and we've got about 70 acres

0:17:21 > 0:17:22of plum trees here.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25We bought this about four years ago.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28It was in a complete state of disrepair.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32Er, so using volunteers like you see behind us,

0:17:32 > 0:17:36we come in one day a week and we've gradually tidied it up

0:17:36 > 0:17:40and then we bring sheep in as well, to keep the grass down.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43Because we are funded through the Higher Level schemes,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45we are basically a conservation trust,

0:17:45 > 0:17:48so we're after looking after the wildlife,

0:17:48 > 0:17:51- as well as everything else. - Ah, to attract wildlife too.
