0:00:01 > 0:00:05This beautiful harbour makes a gruesome appearance in one
0:00:05 > 0:00:08of the most well-known horror novels in English history.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11Intrigued? Terrified? You should be.
0:00:11 > 0:00:14Find out where I am in just a few moments.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47On today's show, I'll be helping a couple hoping to replace work
0:00:47 > 0:00:50with walks in North Yorkshire.
0:00:50 > 0:00:53And as we hit the property trail, one house makes them
0:00:53 > 0:00:55tremble with anticipation.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58I'm shivering down my back and it's not because it's cold!
0:00:58 > 0:01:01And then they sense the drama of the mystery house.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05- It's like something out of a television series, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12Welcome to North Yorkshire and Whitby Harbour.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16Now, it was here in the late 19th century that the author
0:01:16 > 0:01:21Bram Stoker described Dracula's first arrival on English soil,
0:01:21 > 0:01:24when the ship that transported him from Transylvania
0:01:24 > 0:01:26ran aground in a storm.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Mysteriously, all the crew members on board were found dead,
0:01:29 > 0:01:33including the captain, tied to the ship's helm.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37Stoker goes on to describe Dracula leaping ashore in the form
0:01:37 > 0:01:41of a black dog and racing up these cliffs to the churchyard.
0:01:41 > 0:01:45He later went on a blood-sucking rampage throughout London.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48So, now I've got your teeth into this spine-chilling tale,
0:01:48 > 0:01:51I'm happy to say, this beautiful county has
0:01:51 > 0:01:55so much more to offer than vampires and mayhem.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58North Yorkshire is bordered by Cumbria and Lancashire
0:01:58 > 0:02:01to the west and Durham to the north.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04It is by far the UK's largest county, so it's no surprise that it
0:02:04 > 0:02:10has plenty of attractions to satisfy even the most intrepid of explorers.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13It proudly boasts two National Parks -
0:02:13 > 0:02:16the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19The Dales provide stunning rolling green hillsides,
0:02:19 > 0:02:22while the Moors are wild and windswept,
0:02:22 > 0:02:26strewn with untamed heather to create a very atmospheric beauty.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29It is not just the landscape that is dramatic here.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32North Yorkshire has some of the finest remains of Medieval
0:02:32 > 0:02:34abbeys anywhere in the country.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37The 11th century monastery Reivaulx Abbey, near Helmsley,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39is perhaps the most celebrated.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41But if you prefer a coastal view,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44then Whitney Abbey is particularly compelling.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49Given that this is England's largest county, it comes as no
0:02:49 > 0:02:54surprise that North Yorkshire's property prices vary greatly.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57The overall picture is an average detached property here
0:02:57 > 0:03:00would cost you £265,000.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04That is £9,000 more than the national figure.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07And a general rule is the further east you go,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09the better value you get for your money.
0:03:09 > 0:03:14However, when it comes to the coast, prices can rise quite significantly,
0:03:14 > 0:03:19with homes in towns such as Whitby costing up to 10% more.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23Now, inland, the National Parks of the Moors and the Dales
0:03:23 > 0:03:25are very desirable areas.
0:03:25 > 0:03:29And a prime property in a historic village such as Ampleforth,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32expect to pay a 5% premium.
0:03:32 > 0:03:37But wherever you choose to live in this area, one thing is guaranteed,
0:03:37 > 0:03:41there is a rich mix of different architectural styles to choose from.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Many of North Yorkshire's homes are old farm houses
0:03:44 > 0:03:46made from the local sandstone.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50Prices for a four-bedroom cottage typically start at around
0:03:50 > 0:03:54the £5,000 mark, although the hefty price tag is likely to
0:03:54 > 0:03:56include a sizable plot of land.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Picture postcard stone cottages in the Georgian style are also
0:04:00 > 0:04:02highly sought after.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Three-bedroom properties away from the coast
0:04:04 > 0:04:08can cost upwards of £350,000.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11But if you are seeking a home with a sea view,
0:04:11 > 0:04:14then head to locations such as Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay
0:04:14 > 0:04:15in Scarborough.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Prices for a four-bedroom terraced house
0:04:18 > 0:04:20begin at around £250,000.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25Well, there are plenty of stunning properties
0:04:25 > 0:04:29on offer in North Yorkshire, but will any of them suit our buyers?
0:04:29 > 0:04:31Let's meet them and find out.
0:04:31 > 0:04:34Rod and Lynn have lived in Letchworth, Hertfordshire,
0:04:34 > 0:04:36for the last 35 years.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40Retired GP Rod has already hung up his stethoscope
0:04:40 > 0:04:42and with Lynn about to give up her job as a nurse,
0:04:42 > 0:04:46they feel that now is the perfect moment to escape to the country.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48We think now is the right time to move for us.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50I am coming up to retirement
0:04:50 > 0:04:52and we hope in the next phase of our life, we can indulge
0:04:52 > 0:04:55some of our interests.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58And they are hoping those interests, including Rod's basketball,
0:04:58 > 0:05:01can be played out in the North of England.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05We have settled on North Yorkshire because we have family there
0:05:05 > 0:05:08and it is very near to the coast,
0:05:08 > 0:05:12it has good access to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15This move certainly isn't a chance to put up their feet,
0:05:15 > 0:05:19as our buyers have plenty of plans for a very dynamic lifestyle.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23I hope that our new house, with a much larger garden,
0:05:23 > 0:05:28will make life more active, so we will be able to do much more walking,
0:05:28 > 0:05:33much more cycling and generally visit places far more frequently
0:05:33 > 0:05:36because we will be free of work completely.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Rod and Lynn have already sold their house
0:05:39 > 0:05:41and are living in rented accommodation,
0:05:41 > 0:05:44so they are keen to get cracking on the next chapter of their lives
0:05:44 > 0:05:46and make the most of their healthy finances.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50Our budget for the move is £500,000.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Rod and Lynn want us
0:05:57 > 0:06:00to concentrate our search to the very north of the county.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02They want to be close to family in Middlesbrough
0:06:02 > 0:06:04and not too far from the coast.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07Surrounded by breathtaking moorland,
0:06:07 > 0:06:11I met up with them to discover more about their ideal property.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Well, Rod and Lynn, lovely to meet you. Welcome to North Yorkshire.
0:06:14 > 0:06:15- Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19So, remind us what you are looking for in this perfect home.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Probably three to four bedrooms.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25A character house, I think, with a substantial garden.
0:06:25 > 0:06:29And I think Lynn and I would both like a big kitchen.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32And, obviously, amazing views and, ideally,
0:06:32 > 0:06:34not too far from the coast.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37- That would be perfect. - That would be perfect, wouldn't it?
0:06:37 > 0:06:40And what about a budget? How much have we got to play with?
0:06:40 > 0:06:43- I think £500,000.- Right.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47And that really would have to include the cost of any building work
0:06:47 > 0:06:49or extensions.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51I think time is of the essence, isn't it?
0:06:51 > 0:06:54We need to get you out of that rented accommodation
0:06:54 > 0:06:57into your final home together, your dream property.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00- BOTH: Yes, please. - Come on, let's get going.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04Rod and Lynn have £500,000 to spend
0:07:04 > 0:07:07and a clear idea of the house they want to buy.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10They'd like a minimum of three bedrooms,
0:07:10 > 0:07:13a large kitchen with enough space for a table,
0:07:13 > 0:07:16a big garden for Lynn to grow vegetables,
0:07:16 > 0:07:19a garage and it needs to be on the edge of a village.
0:07:19 > 0:07:20We found
0:07:20 > 0:07:23three superb houses to show them. However,
0:07:23 > 0:07:27I won't be revealing the price until they've had a guess first.
0:07:27 > 0:07:30The final choice is, as ever, the mystery house,
0:07:30 > 0:07:33a property they might not have considered on paper,
0:07:33 > 0:07:36but with the potential to be a real cliff-hanger.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42Our first offering is located close to Scalby Village.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44Situated on the edge of their search area,
0:07:44 > 0:07:47but with the North Yorkshire Moor's National Park
0:07:47 > 0:07:49and coast right on their doorstep,
0:07:49 > 0:07:51it could just be what they are after.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55Before I take them to the house, I am showing them the area.
0:07:57 > 0:08:01So, this is the village of Scalby. We are about ten minutes
0:08:01 > 0:08:02out of Scarborough.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04So, do you either of you know this area?
0:08:04 > 0:08:05- BOTH: No. - Completely new to us.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08- Haven't done any house hunting around here?- Definitely not.
0:08:08 > 0:08:09- None at all.- That's very good.
0:08:09 > 0:08:14Well, this village has got a couple of shops, it has got two pubs,
0:08:14 > 0:08:16hairdressers, a couple of churches.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19And the first house we're going to show you is literally just
0:08:19 > 0:08:21a mile up the road.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Our first house is a stunning 17th-century barn
0:08:25 > 0:08:27that was converted 20 years ago.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37So, here is your very first property in North Yorkshire.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40- It's a beautiful barn, isn't it? - It is.
0:08:40 > 0:08:44It has been extended and it is the Yorkshire sandstone,
0:08:44 > 0:08:48you've got the pan tiles and a little outbuilding there, as well.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51- Location wise, we are about a mile from the village.- Yeah.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54- It is a spectacular setting. - Spectacular.
0:08:54 > 0:08:59Rod and Lynn seem very impressed with this beautiful barn conversion.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02Let's hope we can keep the mood flowing as we head inside.
0:09:06 > 0:09:10So, let's start off with the first sitting room.
0:09:10 > 0:09:14- Beautiful.- Lots of beams. - Lovely wall fire.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16And you've got your fire.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18Now, at the moment, it is not a log-burning fire,
0:09:18 > 0:09:20but the flue is open.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22So, if you wanted to put a wood burner in there,
0:09:22 > 0:09:24a multi-fuel burner, very easy to do.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27- Beautiful light with the windows on both sides, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30- So, it's a good-sized room. - It's a beautiful sized room.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32It feels very cosy.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Let's continue.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37This house, with its exposed beams and open fireplace,
0:09:37 > 0:09:40has certainly brought a warm glow to their faces.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43Time to turn up the heat in the kitchen.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47- So, good-sized kitchen.- It is beautiful, isn't it?
0:09:47 > 0:09:50Beautiful kitchen. Lovely range of cupboards.
0:09:50 > 0:09:51Lovely floor.
0:09:51 > 0:09:55Tiles, which have always been high on the list of things we want.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59- Indeed.- Practical for a kitchen in the country.- Very practical.
0:09:59 > 0:10:03You would ideally like a table in the kitchen, so there is that
0:10:03 > 0:10:06little area there, which I think has been beautifully done.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09- That is perfectly sized.- So, you've got all the space downstairs.
0:10:09 > 0:10:14And if you turn round, there is the additional sitting room.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19This is another beautiful room.
0:10:19 > 0:10:24The wood panelling around the walls is really unusual.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26It is great how it flows into the kitchen.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29So, if you did have guests - I know you like your entertaining
0:10:29 > 0:10:32and you want to bring plenty of friends and family here -
0:10:32 > 0:10:34I think it works really well.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37It is also big enough to have a more formal dining table at the back.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41So, this property has two staircases leading upstairs.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44So, this leads us up to the master bedroom.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46- Lovely.- All right.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50Also on this floor is a utility room,
0:10:50 > 0:10:52cloakroom and a light conservatory.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55But let's see where they might be sleeping.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00So, not only is the master bedroom here,
0:11:00 > 0:11:04but it also has its very own sitting room.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06Sitting room number three.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09- Oh, God.- This is so unexpected. - Very bright.
0:11:09 > 0:11:14- Isn't it great?- It's beautiful! What a lovely room.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17- We could sit here all day, I think. - I think so. I am amazed.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20- I really didn't expect this.- It's a bonus, isn't it?- It is.- Absolutely.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22I really didn't expect to find this.
0:11:22 > 0:11:26And then it does lead straight into the master bedroom,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28with an en suite, as well.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30This is the modern part of the house.
0:11:30 > 0:11:32- This was the extension.- Yes.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35So, you do have your own bathroom.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38The three other bedrooms on this floor are all double rooms,
0:11:38 > 0:11:40one with its own en suite.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44There is also a contemporary family bathroom just along the landing.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48Outside, Lynn specifically asked for a large garden.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51This house comes with three quarters of an acre of land to enjoy
0:11:51 > 0:11:54the views and a lovely secluded courtyard -
0:11:54 > 0:11:56even in the rain.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59Well, it had stopped raining until I bring you to see the grounds
0:11:59 > 0:12:01and the garden.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04Lovely place for barbecues and eating out.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08We'd need a sit-on lawnmower, I think, for the front garden.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11- Enough of a garden to play with? - Yes, I should think so.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14- Easily.- Easily, yeah.- No garage.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19But you do have a large outbuilding for storage. Made of the same stone.
0:12:19 > 0:12:22So, you've now have got to decide how much you think this house is
0:12:22 > 0:12:25currently on the market for.
0:12:25 > 0:12:29I think probably about 465,000.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33- OK.- I would say slightly higher. I thought 475.
0:12:33 > 0:12:39- It is actually on the market for £450,000.- Oh, right.
0:12:39 > 0:12:43So, with that in mind, your brain is really worrying now, isn't it?
0:12:43 > 0:12:45Absolutely, absolutely.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47- Good. Do want to have another look around?- Lovely.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50- BOTH: Yes, please. - Have a wander. Get out of the rain
0:12:50 > 0:12:52and I'll catch up with you when you're ready.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54- Right.- Lovely.- See you in a minute. - BOTH: Thank you.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03On the market for £450,000,
0:13:03 > 0:13:06house number one is well within budget.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09They would even have some cash left over to build a garage for Rod.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13All in all, it has a spacious kitchen,
0:13:13 > 0:13:17a wonderful sitting room with open fire and beamed ceilings,
0:13:17 > 0:13:20four double bedrooms, including a master with its own
0:13:20 > 0:13:24sitting room and three quarters of an acre of land.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28I think my favourite thing about this house is this room
0:13:28 > 0:13:30leading onto the kitchen.
0:13:30 > 0:13:34It has got a very homely, warm feel to it.
0:13:34 > 0:13:38I was particularly impressed with the ground floor arrangement,
0:13:38 > 0:13:41with the wooden floors and the tiles throughout.
0:13:41 > 0:13:42Upstairs,
0:13:42 > 0:13:46the master bedroom and the sitting room alongside that were really,
0:13:46 > 0:13:47really good.
0:13:47 > 0:13:51I am sorry about the weather, but it will stop raining soon, I promise.
0:13:51 > 0:13:55- I'm sure it will.- It will. Good start?- Very good start.
0:13:55 > 0:13:58Lovely. Lovely sized house, lovely accommodation inside,
0:13:58 > 0:14:00the bedrooms were beautiful.
0:14:00 > 0:14:03Good, excellent. Right, off we go. Come on.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18Set below the cliffs of the North Yorkshire coastline,
0:14:18 > 0:14:21the fishing port of Whitby looks out over the wild waters
0:14:21 > 0:14:22of the North Sea
0:14:22 > 0:14:27and provides a constant reminder of the town's rich maritime heritage.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30One of history's most noted explorers and navigators,
0:14:30 > 0:14:31Captain James Cook,
0:14:31 > 0:14:35got his first taste of life on the ocean waves here.
0:14:35 > 0:14:37His first seamen's apprenticeship was in Whitby
0:14:37 > 0:14:40and he lodged in the town whenever he was ashore.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43Our buyer Rod has a keen interest in Cook's voyages,
0:14:43 > 0:14:46while wife Lynn also loves history.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49So, earlier in the week, we sent them to the Captain Cook
0:14:49 > 0:14:52Memorial Museum to meet its administrator, Peter Rowe.
0:14:53 > 0:14:57This is the house where Captain Cook lodged as an apprentice seaman.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59We'll take you inside and show you some
0:14:59 > 0:15:00of our more interesting exhibits.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03So, if you'd like to follow me, we'll start straight away.
0:15:03 > 0:15:04Thank you.
0:15:04 > 0:15:08James Cook first lodged here in 1746, as the of apprentice
0:15:08 > 0:15:10to Captain John Walker,
0:15:10 > 0:15:12whom he served for nine years.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14His favourite ship was the Resolution,
0:15:14 > 0:15:18which he used to explore the Pacific on his second and third voyages.
0:15:18 > 0:15:23So, this is a 1/48th model of the Resolution,
0:15:23 > 0:15:25which is the boat that Cook took with him on the second
0:15:25 > 0:15:28and third voyages. It is a fantastic model.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31It took about 4,000 man-hours to make.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33All the models here - you can see here the ship's provisions
0:15:33 > 0:15:36and the ship's company were all on board that boat.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39This was the first ship to cross into both the Arctic
0:15:39 > 0:15:41and the Antarctic circles.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44Cook was the first person to travel as far south.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50All the vessels that Cook sailed on during his adventures were
0:15:50 > 0:15:55collier ships, built in Whitby, like this replica of the HMS Endeavour.
0:15:55 > 0:15:59Incredibly practical in design, they were broad beamed and had
0:15:59 > 0:16:03a shallow draft, meaning the keel was not far below the waterline,
0:16:03 > 0:16:05so they were unlikely to run aground.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07- Hello, welcome aboard.- Hello.
0:16:07 > 0:16:11HMS Endeavour was the first ship Cook captained
0:16:11 > 0:16:16on his scientific voyage of discovery between 1768 and 1771.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20This model is only 40% of the ship's original size.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22But just like the real HMS Endeavour,
0:16:22 > 0:16:26it has been traditionally built by local craftsmen.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28This is a lot of responsibility.
0:16:29 > 0:16:34It is made of steamed large planks fastened to a solid oak frame,
0:16:34 > 0:16:36which is completed with masts and rigging.
0:16:36 > 0:16:37Well done.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40- You're doing fine. Have you done this before?- No.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42- You're doing very well.- Thank you.
0:16:42 > 0:16:46Well, Rod and Lynn seem to be getting their sea legs at last,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49but it's time we got back to our own endeavour
0:16:49 > 0:16:51and explored some more properties.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05Our second house is in Guisborough, just 22 miles from Whitby,
0:17:05 > 0:17:09which is one of Rod and Lynn's favourite seaside locations.
0:17:09 > 0:17:13This is a historic market town dating back to the 13th century
0:17:13 > 0:17:16and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086.
0:17:16 > 0:17:20Some theories, however, date the town back to the Roman occupation
0:17:20 > 0:17:24of Britain, when it is believed it was a military fortification.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26Property two was built in the 17th century
0:17:26 > 0:17:29and has truly magnificent views
0:17:29 > 0:17:31of the surrounding meadows and woodland.
0:17:33 > 0:17:34So, for your second property,
0:17:34 > 0:17:37we have brought you to the very north of North Yorkshire.
0:17:37 > 0:17:39And here it is.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42- Beautiful.- It is, it is a beautiful house.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45I mean it looks, standing here, absolutely enormous.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47And being on this elevated position,
0:17:47 > 0:17:50it gets the most spectacular views
0:17:50 > 0:17:53of the Cleveland Hills and all around.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56It's beautiful.
0:17:56 > 0:18:01Well, believe it or not, this property was built in 1671.
0:18:01 > 0:18:02It is not listed.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05It was a gamekeeper's cottage, but looking at it,
0:18:05 > 0:18:08even from here, it is difficult to believe it is actually this old.
0:18:08 > 0:18:12- Absolutely.- It is, yes. - Well, shall we start the tour?
0:18:12 > 0:18:13BOTH: Yes, please.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16Great first reactions.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19It seems this former gamekeeper's cottage has caught
0:18:19 > 0:18:21Rod and Lynn's imagination.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25So, a good hallway,
0:18:25 > 0:18:28but it leads into... well, I would say,
0:18:28 > 0:18:31a double drawing room, in a way.
0:18:31 > 0:18:35- I love the windows.- Practically brand-new sash windows there,
0:18:35 > 0:18:38which, I'm sure you are aware, would save you a fortune
0:18:38 > 0:18:39if you had to replace them.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42- That is a good sign.- Spectacular.
0:18:42 > 0:18:44I like it. I like it a lot.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46It is a very welcoming house.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49- Beautiful.- The whole room is.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52- Yeah?- It's a very calm, warm room, isn't it?
0:18:52 > 0:18:56Well, I am delighted you love the very first room we've shown you.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59Let's hope it continues.
0:19:03 > 0:19:07A very important room, I feel - the kitchen.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Well, it's a kitchen diner.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13This is lovely.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15- It is.- Really lovely.
0:19:15 > 0:19:19- And there is your wood burner. - This is a magnificent room.
0:19:19 > 0:19:23- It is.- And you've got so much storage space.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25On top of all that storage space,
0:19:25 > 0:19:29next door, there is a cloakroom with a downstairs shower.
0:19:29 > 0:19:33- And through that is actually a utility room, as well.- Oh.
0:19:33 > 0:19:36It has been finished to such a high standard.
0:19:36 > 0:19:38Someone else has spotted something else. Haven't you?
0:19:38 > 0:19:40- The conservatory. - Shall we take a look?
0:19:40 > 0:19:42BOTH: Yes, please.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48- So, your sunroom.- Ideal.
0:19:48 > 0:19:54- Every part of this house is almost for the views, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57And you can get a view of a little bit of your garden there,
0:19:57 > 0:19:59which we will explore a little bit later on.
0:19:59 > 0:20:03- But it gives you an idea.- I could spend many a happy hour sitting here.
0:20:03 > 0:20:07- I'm getting sighs of contentment, aren't I?- Absolutely.
0:20:07 > 0:20:11You can see the quality of the workmanship in this house.
0:20:11 > 0:20:12It's lovely.
0:20:12 > 0:20:16- It is almost like a feeling of homecoming, isn't it?- It is.- Great.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- I just want to sit and look at it. - Aaaah!
0:20:19 > 0:20:22Well, I will give you time to explore on your own a little bit
0:20:22 > 0:20:25- later, because next I want to take you upstairs.- Right.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28- Lovely.- Let's check out the bedrooms.- Lovely.
0:20:28 > 0:20:31Our buyers are getting genuinely excited about this property.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34It appears they are already picturing themselves living here.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38On the first floor, there are two double bedrooms, one single
0:20:38 > 0:20:40and a family bathroom.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46This is the master.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49This doesn't have the en suite that you are hoping for. However,
0:20:49 > 0:20:52what it does have is a corridor leading through
0:20:52 > 0:20:54to an enormous amount of cupboards.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56I like it.
0:20:56 > 0:20:59- Shall we head downstairs? - Yes, perfect.- Right.
0:20:59 > 0:21:03This beautiful sandstone cottage is in a lovely location
0:21:03 > 0:21:05and has an elevated position,
0:21:05 > 0:21:08offering magnificent views from every part of the house.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11There is plenty of space for Lynn to grow her vegetables
0:21:11 > 0:21:15and there is also an added bonus for Rod.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17So, the good news is, with this house,
0:21:17 > 0:21:22you do have a garage, as well as what looks like an extended barn.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25- This is great.- It is just lovely. - It is.
0:21:25 > 0:21:30Two cars, with ease, and lots of gardening equipment.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34Time to inspect where Lynn could be cultivating her cucumbers.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39So, last but not least, the garden.
0:21:39 > 0:21:43Now, in total, it's 1.3 acres.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45Amazing, it really is.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05I think it's...550,000.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08I think it's probably 560,000.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14If I said it was under your budget...?
0:22:14 > 0:22:18- Really?- I'd be amazed. - I would be shocked and stunned.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29- That's...very, very good. - That's better than good.- Yes.
0:22:29 > 0:22:33I'm shivering down my back and it's not because it's cold.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54but they were very contained, weren't they?
0:22:54 > 0:22:59But I could see it in their faces, they're absolutely delighted.
0:23:01 > 0:23:06On the market at £475,000, this 17th-century cottage is well

0:23:36 > 0:23:39It just feels absolutely right for us.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42The outside was beautiful.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45Lovely windows, lovely stonework.
0:23:45 > 0:23:50And then we came into the kitchen, which is absolutely magnificent.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53I think it would suit us down to the ground.
0:23:53 > 0:23:57- All right, you two.- Yes. - Have you seen enough?
0:23:57 > 0:24:00- Yes, thank you. - We have, yes, thank you.- Good.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02I don't want to tear you away,
0:24:02 > 0:24:03but I'm afraid I'm going to have to now.
0:24:03 > 0:24:05Come on, that's it for today.
0:24:14 > 0:24:17As the sun sets over the North Yorkshire Moors,
0:24:17 > 0:24:20our buyers take time to sit back and savour their first day
0:24:20 > 0:24:21of house hunting.
0:24:27 > 0:24:31Retired doctor Rod and his wife, Lynn, who is a nurse,
0:24:31 > 0:24:35are searching for a new lease of life in North Yorkshire.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38So far, there has been a warm welcome to property one,
0:24:38 > 0:24:41with its fabulous master bedroom and attached sitting room.
0:24:41 > 0:24:45But they instantly fell in love with our second property,
0:24:45 > 0:24:47the 17th-century gamekeeper's cottage,
0:24:47 > 0:24:50perhaps due to its fantastic views.
0:24:50 > 0:24:54However, will the mystery house tip them over a watery edge?
0:24:54 > 0:24:56Fancy being lord and lady of the manor?
0:24:56 > 0:24:58Yeah, I'd probably have to be a worker, I think,
0:24:58 > 0:24:59rather than the lord.
0:24:59 > 0:25:02And I put a bit of a shine on a jewel of North Yorkshire.
0:25:02 > 0:25:06You can see the black coming through straightaway.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14Our mission in North Yorkshire is to find Rod and Lynn
0:25:14 > 0:25:15their forever home.
0:25:15 > 0:25:19Today, it's time to show them our third and final property,
0:25:19 > 0:25:22so let's see if the mystery house can work its magic.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28So, yesterday was a pretty exciting day, wasn't it?
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Did you sleep last night or were you thinking of that second property?
0:25:31 > 0:25:34I think I spent a lot of time thinking about the second property,
0:25:34 > 0:25:35- but...- I slept better,
0:25:35 > 0:25:38but still thought a lot about the second property.
0:25:38 > 0:25:40So, our mystery house has got quite a lot of work to do,
0:25:40 > 0:25:43hasn't it? Let's be honest, now, to beat that.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46So, what are you dreading that we might be taking you to see?
0:25:46 > 0:25:49Anything thinking, "I hope it's not a..."
0:25:49 > 0:25:51I hope it's not semi-detached.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53Well, wait and see.
0:25:53 > 0:25:57OK, well, we are nearly there, so you won't have to wait for too long.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01For our mystery property, we have travelled near to Runswick Bay,
0:26:01 > 0:26:05a picturesque seaside location 30 miles south of Middlesbrough,
0:26:05 > 0:26:06where they have family.
0:26:06 > 0:26:10With its sweeping sheltered cove and charming red roof cottages,
0:26:10 > 0:26:12Runswick Bay is one of the Yorkshire coast's
0:26:12 > 0:26:14prettiest destinations.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17Among the unique attractions is this ancient thatched
0:26:17 > 0:26:18Coast Guard's cottage.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22The mystery house is a Grade 2 listed home
0:26:22 > 0:26:24in the most stunning setting.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26They've said they want to be near the coast,
0:26:26 > 0:26:28but how about living on it?
0:26:30 > 0:26:35So, here we have our third and final property, the mystery house.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38- Look at this. - It's on a cliff, nearly.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41Yeah. Spectacular views, I mean, just look at that behind us.
0:26:41 > 0:26:45- Quite amazing. - Stunning to look at, isn't it?
0:26:45 > 0:26:48Yes, it's like something out of a novel
0:26:48 > 0:26:50- or a television series, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:26:50 > 0:26:53You might notice there's a building to the side which is
0:26:53 > 0:26:54attached. That's a separate house.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58- Oh, I see. So, it's just this bit - Yes, the three...
0:26:58 > 0:27:00Just as you see in front of you.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03- It is beautiful. - Made from local stone.
0:27:03 > 0:27:06And it does have, you know, the most amazing views.
0:27:06 > 0:27:09You can't forget those on your doorstep, can you?
0:27:09 > 0:27:10You couldn't, no.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13- So, should we start, step inside? - Both: Yes, please.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16- All right, follow me.- Thank you.
0:27:16 > 0:27:20Rod and Lynn clearly love the idea of waking every morning
0:27:20 > 0:27:22to these spectacular views,
0:27:22 > 0:27:24but they are not giving much away about what they think
0:27:24 > 0:27:26of the house.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30So, this mystery house has a very impressive hallway.
0:27:30 > 0:27:33You've got the original door dating back to 1750.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36And I wanted to start off with the first drawing room.
0:27:36 > 0:27:38It is really impressive.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41- I'm speechless. - Beautiful bay window.
0:27:41 > 0:27:45It is lovely to see that they've kept the original features.
0:27:45 > 0:27:48And the views will be spectacular in summer and winter.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51I'd like a chair and a good book in that window.
0:27:51 > 0:27:54Good! Well, that is a jolly good start.
0:27:54 > 0:27:57Right, let's go next door.
0:27:57 > 0:28:00Well, they seem truly enchanted with this home
0:28:00 > 0:28:03and I think there is much more pleasure to come.
0:28:03 > 0:28:08So, across the hall and you've got another very large reception room.
0:28:08 > 0:28:10This time, they are using it as their dining room.
0:28:10 > 0:28:14- This is... - Another lovely, lovely room.
0:28:14 > 0:28:19- With a door in the back. - Yes, access to your front garden.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21The views from here are...
0:28:21 > 0:28:25It's just built, isn't it, to enjoy those views.
0:28:25 > 0:28:29- Yeah.- Beautiful.- I like it.
0:28:29 > 0:28:32It's...quite breathtaking.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35It still looks like something out of a television series inside,
0:28:35 > 0:28:36doesn't it?
0:28:36 > 0:28:38You don't fancy being lord and lady of the manor?
0:28:38 > 0:28:42Lynn might be the lady. I'd probably have to be a worker,
0:28:42 > 0:28:45I think, rather than the lord. I'd be her servant.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48Well, if you are going to be the servant, perhaps I should show you
0:28:48 > 0:28:51where the kitchen is, because that is where all the hard work starts.
0:28:51 > 0:28:52- Yes, please.- Lovely.
0:28:52 > 0:28:56Rod can hold off getting his hands dirty just yet,
0:28:56 > 0:28:58as we survey our next treat.
0:28:58 > 0:29:00So, here is your kitchen.
0:29:00 > 0:29:04- Complete with a range. - A range cooker!
0:29:04 > 0:29:08- Beautiful. Lovely colour.- And these are the original cupboards,
0:29:08 > 0:29:12- believe it or not.- Is it panelling or cupboards?- All panelling.
0:29:12 > 0:29:14You have some cupboards either side.
0:29:14 > 0:29:18Another beautiful, bright window. That window is lovely.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21Overlooking the garden.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24Also on this floor is a huge utility area and cloak room.
0:29:24 > 0:29:29But we are heading upstairs, bypassing this beautiful bay window.
0:29:29 > 0:29:32There are four bedrooms in total up here,
0:29:32 > 0:29:34including two double guest rooms and a single.
0:29:34 > 0:29:37There is also a fantastic wooden floored bathroom
0:29:37 > 0:29:39with a roll-top bath.
0:29:39 > 0:29:41Now for the room that could be theirs.
0:29:41 > 0:29:44Here is just one of the four bedrooms that we have.
0:29:44 > 0:29:48- Wonderful views.- Yes, amazing views.- It is a good size.
0:29:48 > 0:29:51Yes, all three of the doubles are a really good size.
0:29:51 > 0:29:55And again, they have all got the huge windows.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58As we move outside, we will get a sense of the surrounding land
0:29:58 > 0:30:01that amounts to about 13 acres.
0:30:01 > 0:30:04At the front of the property, there is a walled garden joining onto
0:30:04 > 0:30:08a sizable lawn, which extends right round to the back of the house.
0:30:08 > 0:30:11Here, there are a number of outbuildings,
0:30:11 > 0:30:13including a stable block and a large barn.
0:30:16 > 0:30:19A lot of these buildings have actually had planning
0:30:19 > 0:30:22permission granted to make them into holiday lets, convert them.
0:30:22 > 0:30:25That has expired, that commission, so
0:30:25 > 0:30:29if you were interested, potentially, in running this as a side business,
0:30:29 > 0:30:31you would need to apply for permission again,
0:30:31 > 0:30:32but there are plans,
0:30:32 > 0:30:36they've already been drawn up how they'd all be converted.
0:30:36 > 0:30:41- That would be a big decision.- Yes. - Because really, we are retiring.- Yep.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43Well, it is something to think about.
0:30:43 > 0:30:46Rod and Lynn seem a little unnerved by the size
0:30:46 > 0:30:50and scale of this property, especially with the outbuildings.
0:30:50 > 0:30:53However, the owners are willing to consider selling the house
0:30:53 > 0:30:54without them if necessary.
0:30:54 > 0:30:57So, if our buyers just want the house and gardens,
0:30:57 > 0:30:59then this could be the place for them.
0:30:59 > 0:31:04This is the toughest bit. How much is it all worth?
0:31:04 > 0:31:07Definitely blown the budget on this one.
0:31:07 > 0:31:10- Who wants to go first? It's the final time.- You go.
0:31:10 > 0:31:12Well, I would say...
0:31:12 > 0:31:15- 610,000.- OK.
0:31:17 > 0:31:22I was going to go just under 600, so 595.
0:31:23 > 0:31:27Total price for absolutely everything we have shown you...
0:31:28 > 0:31:33- ..£545,000.- Really?- 545?- Yep.
0:31:33 > 0:31:37That is everything. So, it's a double guess the price.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40How much for the house on its own with the front
0:31:40 > 0:31:43and the rear garden up to the stable block?
0:31:45 > 0:31:47475?
0:31:48 > 0:31:50465.
0:31:50 > 0:31:53- 375.- 375?
0:31:53 > 0:31:56If you just wanted to buy the house on its own, with the gardens,
0:31:56 > 0:31:59£375,000.
0:31:59 > 0:32:02Because then you could negotiate if you wanted the stable block,
0:32:02 > 0:32:06about £125,000, including the land around it.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09Or if you wanted just to buy the fields,
0:32:09 > 0:32:11she is happy to sell that off separately, as well.
0:32:11 > 0:32:15- Well!- Gosh, food for thought. - It certainly is.
0:32:15 > 0:32:18- I feel a cup of tea and a think might be in order.- Have a wander.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20Do have a think, cos there are so many options
0:32:20 > 0:32:22with this splendid property.
0:32:22 > 0:32:25- Absolutely.- And I will catch up with you when you're ready.
0:32:25 > 0:32:28- All right.- Off you go. - Thank you very much.- Thank you.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33Well, I thought yesterday it was all done and dusted,
0:32:33 > 0:32:36but the mystery house has now really confused them.
0:32:36 > 0:32:40There are just so many fantastic options with this home.
0:32:40 > 0:32:44Altogether, this property with outbuildings
0:32:44 > 0:32:48and fields is on the market for £545,000.
0:32:48 > 0:32:51However, if Rod and Lynn just want the house and gardens,
0:32:51 > 0:32:57then the price would fall to just 375,000, well under their budget.
0:32:57 > 0:33:01It has a beautiful sitting room with bay windows looking out to the sea,
0:33:01 > 0:33:07a huge kitchen, four bedrooms, almost 13 acres of land
0:33:07 > 0:33:10and a large range of farm buildings that could be converted
0:33:10 > 0:33:12into holiday lets.
0:33:12 > 0:33:16The mystery property... Hasn't it thrown a spanner in the works?
0:33:16 > 0:33:20The thing I like about it so much are the windows,
0:33:20 > 0:33:24the exceptional views, the proportions of the rooms.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27I think what I least like about it are all the choices.
0:33:27 > 0:33:32The mystery property really is like a Georgian grand house.
0:33:32 > 0:33:36It is the sort of house that I couldn't believe
0:33:36 > 0:33:38we would be thinking of buying.
0:33:38 > 0:33:43So, I think the outbuildings and turning those into something
0:33:43 > 0:33:47that we would use would probably be a step too far.
0:33:50 > 0:33:55Oh, you look like the owners already. Have you seen enough?
0:33:55 > 0:33:57- Yes, thank you. - I think we have, yes.
0:33:57 > 0:34:00- Have I confused you now?- You have. - Good!- Very confused.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02I think you need some time, don't you,
0:34:02 > 0:34:05to think about all three properties and then we'll have a chat.
0:34:05 > 0:34:07- Right.- Come on, then.- Thank you.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26The historic fishing town of Whitby is well-known for its jet,
0:34:26 > 0:34:29a hard black mineral found in its cliffs.
0:34:29 > 0:34:33Jet is created from the fossilized remains of the monkey puzzle tree
0:34:33 > 0:34:34from the Jurassic period
0:34:34 > 0:34:37and can only be uncovered on a 7.5 mile stretch
0:34:37 > 0:34:39of this North Yorkshire coastline.
0:34:41 > 0:34:44Jet was undoubtedly one of the earliest gemstones used to
0:34:44 > 0:34:47create artefacts and jewellery
0:34:47 > 0:34:50and became particularly fashionable during the Victorian era.
0:34:50 > 0:34:54Earlier in the week, I met up with Hal Redvers-Jones,
0:34:54 > 0:34:57a local jeweller and expert on this rare gem.
0:34:57 > 0:35:00Hal, you have a jewellery business here in Whitby,
0:35:00 > 0:35:02working exclusively with jet.
0:35:02 > 0:35:06But what exactly is jet itself? Is it a stone?
0:35:06 > 0:35:10It is classified as a gemstone, yes, but it is actually a fossil,
0:35:10 > 0:35:13a fossil of the Araucaria araucana,
0:35:13 > 0:35:15commonly known as the monkey puzzle tree.
0:35:15 > 0:35:17And what happens to it? How does it become...
0:35:17 > 0:35:21go from a monkey puzzle tree to this very hard sort of semi-precious
0:35:21 > 0:35:23stone that we know?
0:35:23 > 0:35:27180 million years ago, the tree was washed off the land,
0:35:27 > 0:35:30into a warm and shallow sea and became embedded
0:35:30 > 0:35:33in a thick sedimentary layer,
0:35:33 > 0:35:35and that stopped the oxygen getting to it
0:35:35 > 0:35:39and it didn't decompose. So, we got this fossil.
0:35:39 > 0:35:44And you can see here, on this piece, the rings of the tree.
0:35:44 > 0:35:46- It's so shiny already.- Yeah.
0:35:46 > 0:35:49So, can you find jet anywhere else in the UK or is it
0:35:49 > 0:35:51just in this Whitby area?
0:35:51 > 0:35:54Well, you can't find it in the UK, no. It is geographically
0:35:54 > 0:35:58and geologically exclusive to that 7.5 miles.
0:35:58 > 0:36:01But you can find poor quality jet elsewhere in the world.
0:36:01 > 0:36:05In the early 19th century, jet was worn by women in mourning,
0:36:05 > 0:36:07most notably by Queen Victoria.
0:36:07 > 0:36:12At that time, Whitby was doing a roaring trade in such jewellery
0:36:12 > 0:36:14and one of the last remaining workshops from this period
0:36:14 > 0:36:16still survives today.
0:36:19 > 0:36:23- My goodness.- This is it, this is what I wanted to show you -
0:36:23 > 0:36:28- an 1867 original workshop. - It is amazing!
0:36:28 > 0:36:31This is exactly how it would have been.
0:36:31 > 0:36:35Craftsmen would have stood in front of these, treadling the wheels,
0:36:35 > 0:36:37and these wheels would rotate.
0:36:37 > 0:36:41And the craftsmen would then hold the jet up against this.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43When jet became fashionable,
0:36:43 > 0:36:45the economy of Whitby must have exploded then,
0:36:45 > 0:36:46as this is the only place to get it.
0:36:46 > 0:36:48There was a meteoric rise.
0:36:48 > 0:36:51Then there would have been 200 of these workshops.
0:36:51 > 0:36:54What an economic force it was for the town.
0:36:54 > 0:36:57And looking at the equipment all around that the carvers used,
0:36:57 > 0:36:58has it changed much today?
0:36:58 > 0:37:01The major difference is power.
0:37:01 > 0:37:05I have electricity, which miniaturizes the whole process,
0:37:05 > 0:37:09whereas these chaps would have had to treadle the wheels
0:37:09 > 0:37:12and the jet pieces went round the workshop,
0:37:12 > 0:37:14giving it to the next craftsman,
0:37:14 > 0:37:18who would have done a different aspect of the craft.
0:37:18 > 0:37:19So, it literally...
0:37:19 > 0:37:22- There'd have been a different carver at each station.- Yeah.
0:37:22 > 0:37:26Now, what I do is I have to do each one of these stages myself.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29- Fancy having an apprentice for the day?- Yes.
0:37:29 > 0:37:30Seven-year apprenticeship,
0:37:30 > 0:37:33we can condense that into a couple of minutes.
0:37:33 > 0:37:34- Let's see how I get on.- Yeah.
0:37:39 > 0:37:43- So, here is your workshop.- Yeah, this is the master carver's bench.
0:37:43 > 0:37:46- Yeah.- You can take a seat here. - Thank you.
0:37:46 > 0:37:49It is a little bit smaller than next door, isn't it?
0:37:49 > 0:37:53- Yes. Just hold that in your right hand. You are right-handed?- Yep.
0:37:53 > 0:37:57This is professional carving equipment.
0:37:57 > 0:38:03Yesterday, I started to carve this large contemporary ring.
0:38:03 > 0:38:07This has got a finely ground diamond compound in it, so what
0:38:07 > 0:38:12you are going to do is to start the first process of the polishing,
0:38:12 > 0:38:17taking that in your left hand and then using this tiny little brush
0:38:17 > 0:38:22here, brushing all of that paste into the detailed sections of that.
0:38:22 > 0:38:27Just moving it into the details of the cuts there.
0:38:27 > 0:38:31You can see the black coming through straightaway.
0:38:31 > 0:38:34Now, there will be two or three more stages of polish before it
0:38:34 > 0:38:38reaches that really beautiful shine.
0:38:38 > 0:38:42I am really absorbed doing this. A final bit of buffing.
0:38:42 > 0:38:48- So, master jeweller, how is my handiwork?- It is very good, yes.
0:38:48 > 0:38:51Fit to grace somebody's long, slender finger.
0:38:51 > 0:38:53And the even better news is it will be around for centuries
0:38:53 > 0:38:55- and centuries.- Yes, it will.
0:38:55 > 0:38:58Absolutely. The antique of the future.
0:38:58 > 0:39:01- Hal, thank you very much indeed. - You are more than welcome.
0:39:05 > 0:39:08So, don't forget, if you come here on holiday, keep your eyes
0:39:08 > 0:39:13peeled. You may find your own piece of Whitby jet on the beach.
0:39:13 > 0:39:16So, that's it, our house search here in North Yorkshire is over
0:39:16 > 0:39:19and it has certainly been an exciting one.
0:39:19 > 0:39:22I can't wait to hear what Rod and Lynn have got to say.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27So, here we are on a beautiful day
0:39:27 > 0:39:30with the most amazing views behind us.
0:39:30 > 0:39:32Is this where you both want to settle?
0:39:32 > 0:39:35- You haven't changed your minds after our search?- Definitely not.
0:39:35 > 0:39:36Who could not want to live here?
0:39:36 > 0:39:38I know, it's absolutely beautiful, isn't it?
0:39:38 > 0:39:40The big question is,
0:39:40 > 0:39:44have we got close to finding you your perfect property?
0:39:44 > 0:39:47Should we start off with the very first property that we saw?
0:39:47 > 0:39:50In a little village outside of Scarborough, actually, Scalby.
0:39:50 > 0:39:53Tell me what you thought.
0:39:53 > 0:39:57It was a beautiful house in a beautiful place. I just felt,
0:39:57 > 0:40:01really, it was too far away from our original destination.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04We really wanted to be within striking distance of the family,
0:40:04 > 0:40:05didn't we?
0:40:05 > 0:40:08Because the family are all situated around Middlesbrough area,
0:40:08 > 0:40:12- aren't they?- Yes, really at the very north of North Yorkshire.
0:40:12 > 0:40:15That was the first property we showed you. Then we moved on
0:40:15 > 0:40:16to Guisborough, which was much closer
0:40:16 > 0:40:19- to where your family actually live. - Yes.
0:40:19 > 0:40:22And, well, the second house,
0:40:22 > 0:40:24- it did get quite a reaction, didn't it?- Yes, it did.
0:40:24 > 0:40:29The second house looked good from the outside and the workmanship,
0:40:29 > 0:40:33the care that had gone into putting windows, floors and everything in
0:40:33 > 0:40:36was just really, really, really good.
0:40:36 > 0:40:39You wouldn't have to do anything inside the house, I don't think.
0:40:39 > 0:40:42No, that's very true. And what about you, Lynn?
0:40:42 > 0:40:43What did you think?
0:40:43 > 0:40:47I loved it yesterday and I think I do still love it today.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49The feeling of walking into that house was
0:40:49 > 0:40:51just like the feeling of coming home.
0:40:51 > 0:40:56There was scope to extend into the garage area,
0:40:56 > 0:40:59and that is the sort of work that we would like to do.
0:40:59 > 0:41:02I just want to ask, because you both said straightaway,
0:41:02 > 0:41:06"What an amazing house, it has got the right feel for us."
0:41:06 > 0:41:09- Did that continue throughout? - Absolutely, I think it did.
0:41:09 > 0:41:10Yes, it did.
0:41:10 > 0:41:15It was difficult to believe that it was a house with only two rooms,
0:41:15 > 0:41:18essentially, downstairs, because it felt much bigger than that.
0:41:18 > 0:41:22- Yes, it did feel big. - Quite deceiving in that respect.
0:41:22 > 0:41:26So, the last property we showed you, leaving on a high from that,
0:41:26 > 0:41:29was something very, very different - our mystery house.
0:41:29 > 0:41:33So much potential if you choose to take it on.
0:41:33 > 0:41:35When we first looked at the house,
0:41:35 > 0:41:39you could see it's a very grand, very beautiful, big house.
0:41:39 > 0:41:43But when we went in through the front door,
0:41:43 > 0:41:48it needs lots of time and attention inside.
0:41:48 > 0:41:51And because it was the third house and because it was mystery house,
0:41:51 > 0:41:53I was thinking the whole time,
0:41:53 > 0:41:54"This is going to blow our budget.
0:41:54 > 0:41:59"Will we have enough money to do what we would want to do to it
0:41:59 > 0:42:02"to make it a house that we will be comfortable in to live in?"
0:42:02 > 0:42:06There was quite a lot of work that we would want to do inside
0:42:06 > 0:42:10and not very much work to do in the garden outside.
0:42:10 > 0:42:13So, although the house itself looked grand
0:42:13 > 0:42:16and I think, really, was top of the list for appearances
0:42:16 > 0:42:18from the outside,
0:42:18 > 0:42:22there wasn't much work to do in the immediate garden.
0:42:22 > 0:42:26I suppose I have to ask you, then, what is going to be the next move?
0:42:26 > 0:42:27I think we would probably like to go back
0:42:27 > 0:42:30and have a look at the second house.
0:42:30 > 0:42:32Do you think, potentially, that could be the house for you?
0:42:32 > 0:42:35- I think, potentially, it could.- Yes.
0:42:35 > 0:42:38Well, best of luck when you go and look at the second property again.
0:42:38 > 0:42:40I hope all your questions get answered.
0:42:40 > 0:42:43Listen, thank you both very much. Let us know how you get on.
0:42:43 > 0:42:45And certainly, if you put an offer in,
0:42:45 > 0:42:47I want to be the first to know.
0:42:47 > 0:42:50Of course. And thank you very much for showing us
0:42:50 > 0:42:52what we know is a beautiful county.
0:42:57 > 0:42:59One thing is for sure, both Rod
0:42:59 > 0:43:03and Lynn now know exactly where in this county they want to live
0:43:03 > 0:43:06and that their budget will get them what they are looking for.
0:43:06 > 0:43:08Or as the mystery house demonstrated,
0:43:08 > 0:43:11potentially a lot more.
0:43:11 > 0:43:13Until next time, bye-bye.
0:43:14 > 0:43:17Well, Rod and Lynn did go back to see house number two
0:43:17 > 0:43:18near Guisborough.
0:43:18 > 0:43:23Even though they loved it, they had second thoughts about the location.
0:43:23 > 0:43:26If you would like to escape to the country in Scotland, Wales,
0:43:26 > 0:43:29Northern Ireland or England, and need our help,
