0:00:02 > 0:00:06There are more of these stone crosses in this county's hilly, heathery moorlands

0:00:06 > 0:00:09than any other part of the UK - 43 at the last count.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Where are we and what is the purpose of these things?

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Find out in just a moment.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50'On today's show, I'm helping a couple sever their ties to town

0:00:50 > 0:00:52'and head for pastures new in the country.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56'Our house hunt gets off to a fabulous start.'

0:00:56 > 0:00:59It takes your breath away. It's absolutely gorgeous.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02'Then their enthusiasm wobbles a bit.'

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Not so keen on the house. Not quite higgledy-piggledy enough.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14We're in North Yorkshire, and these are the ever-beautiful North Yorkshire Moors.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19After the Norman Conquest, they were popular with Christian pilgrims,

0:01:19 > 0:01:23who used these stone crosses to navigate between the famous abbeys.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26You can still get from Whitby on the coast to York,

0:01:26 > 0:01:31a journey of around 50 miles, using these crosses as orientation points.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36That is, if you're not distracted by some of the county's other famous sights.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41'Spanning 3,400 square miles,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44'and the largest of all the English counties,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48'North Yorkshire is home to a hugely diverse landscape.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52'Within its borders lie two of England's great national parks -

0:01:52 > 0:01:55'the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales,

0:01:55 > 0:02:00'which was given its protected status back in 1954.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03'Its lush green valleys are peppered with historic villages

0:02:03 > 0:02:07'such as Grassington, where local limestone has formed the bedrock

0:02:07 > 0:02:10'of its architecture for centuries.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13'To the east of the county, the North York Moors

0:02:13 > 0:02:16'are characterised by its purple haze of heather covered moorland,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19'one of the largest such areas in the country.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22'And with over 1,000 miles of pathways,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24'it's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29'Moving coastwards, you'll find swathes of sandy beaches,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31'rocky coves and towering cliffs,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34'amongst which lies the fishing port of Whitby,

0:02:34 > 0:02:39'from where its most famous sea-faring son, Captain James Cook,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41'set sail for the South Seas.'

0:02:43 > 0:02:47Over the last decade, property prices in North Yorkshire have doubled.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49The average price for a detached home here

0:02:49 > 0:02:55is £263,000, which is £8,000 above the national average.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00Not too painful, but if you were going to buy a property within the two national parks,

0:03:00 > 0:03:06the dales or the moors, you'd have to whop another 20% on top of that.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10So it seems that people, despite a national downturn in property prices,

0:03:10 > 0:03:14are willing to pay a premium for beautiful landscape

0:03:14 > 0:03:16and lovely traditional stone houses,

0:03:16 > 0:03:20something the moors and the dales have in abundance.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25'Properties are typically built from local limestone,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28'often dating back to the 17th century.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32'Red pantile roofs are a common sight.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34'This three-bedroom property

0:03:34 > 0:03:39'in Hutton-le-Hole is on the market for just shy of £355,000.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44'Whitby's historic harbour has many fine examples of architecture

0:03:44 > 0:03:46'spanning the last 300 years.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50'Many of the Georgian and Victorian buildings were originally built

0:03:50 > 0:03:54'to accommodate families who worked in the fishing industry,

0:03:54 > 0:03:58'such as this two-bedroom house priced at £250,000.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03'Farming has always been rooted in Yorkshire's heritage,

0:04:03 > 0:04:06'which is reflected in its building types.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10'This four-bedroom farmhouse with a separate two-bedroom cottage

0:04:10 > 0:04:13'is £565,000.'

0:04:16 > 0:04:19An amazing array of different styles here in Yorkshire.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Are any of them to the taste of our buyers? Let's meet them.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26'Bob, a retired Harrier aircraft engineer,

0:04:26 > 0:04:29'and his wife Bernadette, an accountant,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31'live in a four-bedroom semi-detached house

0:04:31 > 0:04:34'on a busy high street in Huntingdon.

0:04:34 > 0:04:40'It's been the perfect family home to bring up their three children, but they want to downsize.'

0:04:40 > 0:04:42It'll be very sad to go, in many respects.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46But it's necessary, we know that. It's far too big for just us.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50It's our chance, with our third child about to leave,

0:04:50 > 0:04:52for us to escape from them.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57If we were to stay here, there's always a possibility they decide to move back!

0:04:57 > 0:05:01'Our buyers also feel they've outgrown the area.'

0:05:01 > 0:05:03This is a very busy village.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07The newspapers arrive at about four o'clock in the morning.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- From then on, a train of vehicles come down the high street.- Yeah.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16During the school term, there's children outside, the buses stop over the road.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Which was all well and good when we had children.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22We want to move away from that completely,

0:05:22 > 0:05:24into a very peaceful environment,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28where people want to come to have peace and relax.

0:05:28 > 0:05:33'After 35 years together working and raising a family,

0:05:33 > 0:05:37'this move marks a new era of focusing on each other.'

0:05:37 > 0:05:40- We met in 1977, didn't we?- We did.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Just before I went off to university.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Along came this chap with this patterned shirt and tanktop

0:05:46 > 0:05:48and asked me to dance.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52- Then we had a slow dance.- As far as I was concerned, that was it.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55When I saw Bernadette I thought, "Wow! Seriously fit lady!"

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Fit, but she couldn't run very fast, which is why I managed to catch her!

0:05:59 > 0:06:02We're good friends. We just like to be together.

0:06:02 > 0:06:07'However, when it comes to property, they don't see eye-to-eye.'

0:06:07 > 0:06:12We're looking for somewhere, hopefully, very rural and peaceful with its own land...

0:06:12 > 0:06:14No!

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Not VERY rural. Rural.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19There is a difference of opinion, as you can see!

0:06:19 > 0:06:23But it won't matter, particularly to me.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Wherever Bernadette is is home, so...

0:06:25 > 0:06:30'One thing they do agree on is the part of North Yorkshire they want to move to.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33'It's somewhere Bernadette has a strong connection with.'

0:06:33 > 0:06:37We're looking to move to the North Yorkshire Moors area.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Your parents come from not too far away from there.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43When we go to North Yorkshire we feel like we're going home.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47'Our buyers have a romantic vision of features they'd like their new home to have.'

0:06:47 > 0:06:51I like beams. My favourite thing is deep window sills.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54I LOVE deep window sills, which we don't have in this house.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58I'd very much like a wood, and if it had a stream on the boundary...

0:06:58 > 0:07:01- LAUGHING:- Oh! We're really dreaming now!

0:07:01 > 0:07:04'Apart from a quirky house with LOTS of character,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07'there's one other important request.'

0:07:07 > 0:07:13We could, hopefully, have a small property with a couple of holiday lets and maybe some land.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15We'd like to have some room for caravans.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18'Their house is already on the market,

0:07:18 > 0:07:22'so they have a clear idea of how much they can spend on their rural retreat.'

0:07:22 > 0:07:26The budget we're looking at is £550,000.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Maximum.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30BOTH LAUGH

0:07:35 > 0:07:39'Bob and Bernadette would like us to concentrate our search

0:07:39 > 0:07:43'to the east of the county, around the market town of Pickering.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46'This means they'll be close to family, a good transport network

0:07:46 > 0:07:50'and plenty of tourist attractions, including the moors.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52'I caught up with them on Yorkshire soil

0:07:52 > 0:07:55'to find out more about their exact requirements.'

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- Welcome to Yorkshire, you two. - Thank you.- You know this area well.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03- It's a homecoming of sorts. - Yes, it is for me. My parents come from Yorkshire.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07What are you looking for, in terms of the spec for the house?

0:08:07 > 0:08:11- We want a fairly small house.- Good. - Don't really want a big house.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Two bedrooms, I think, as a minimum, but that would be fine.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17Are you fixated on a particular style?

0:08:17 > 0:08:19- Er...- Character, really.- Character.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23We want it to, you usually say, to pull on your heartstrings.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27A real character property. Doesn't matter if it needs a bit of work.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Most old property requires work, anyway.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33And, hopefully, a couple of holiday lets.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38Talking about the business side, are you looking for something self-contained

0:08:38 > 0:08:42or are you looking to be looking after people, cooking breakfasts?

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- No!- Self-contained.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46Self-contained.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50A little bit of land would be nice because we have dogs.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54- We'd like to encourage people with dogs to come as well. - Dog-friendly. That's a plus!

0:08:54 > 0:08:58- We have found some beautiful properties.- Good.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- So, let's go and see them. Follow me.- OK.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06'With their £550,000 budget, Bob and Bernadette have set down

0:09:06 > 0:09:10'some clear criteria with their property brief...

0:09:22 > 0:09:26'..Of course, we've got three fabulous properties up our sleeve,

0:09:26 > 0:09:31'but we won't be revealing how much they cost until they've had a guess.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34'Lastly, we'll serve up our mystery house,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37'with a business that could be the cherry on the cake.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47'Keeping close to the moors,

0:09:47 > 0:09:51'our house hunt gets under way in the hamlet of Langdale End,

0:09:51 > 0:09:53'with the amenities of Thornton-le-Dale

0:09:53 > 0:09:54'a 20-minute drive away.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57'Thornton may be a village, but it's certainly vibrant

0:09:57 > 0:10:00'and home to a strong local community.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03'It's also a popular stopping off point for walkers,

0:10:03 > 0:10:07'with a number of local shops, as well as a Post Office

0:10:07 > 0:10:09'and a pub or two, which will please Bernadette -

0:10:09 > 0:10:13'although the isolated rural setting of our first house

0:10:13 > 0:10:15'will definitely resonate with Bob.'

0:10:15 > 0:10:19- Wow.- It is a wow, isn't it? Absolutely gorgeous!

0:10:19 > 0:10:23In terms of location, this might be one more for you, Bob.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26- It's a bit of a walk to the nearest pub.- It might be hiking boots!

0:10:26 > 0:10:29This is one of the most beautiful spots

0:10:29 > 0:10:33- I've shown a house in a long time. - It's breath-taking.

0:10:33 > 0:10:39- The ford's just lovely. - You were pooh-poohing his dreams of a stream and a woodland!

0:10:39 > 0:10:43- But we have come up trumps. - We're only missing the pub.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- You could build a pub.- All right!

0:10:45 > 0:10:50- Ironically, it WAS a pub.- Was it? - This was on a drover's path.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Wow.- It was a sort of informal pub and if you look on the barn,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55see a little Bacchus head?

0:10:55 > 0:10:59- Yes.- God of wine.- Oh, right!

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- This has really started off very well.- We're sold already!

0:11:02 > 0:11:05- Enough chat. Let's look at the house.- Yes.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08'That was just the reaction I was hoping for.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11'Even though Bernadette wanted to be on the edge of a village,

0:11:11 > 0:11:15'she's blown away by the rustic charm of our first property.'

0:11:16 > 0:11:20Through this garden room into this, the kitchen-dining area.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- Oh, it's lovely.- Very nice.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- I like the thickness of the walls. - I know! Massive thick walls.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30It dates back to about 1840, so it was a proper old cottage.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32These were extensions put on in the '60s.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- The original one was quite small. - Nice size.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Through there, you've got a downstairs toilet

0:11:38 > 0:11:40and a utility room with a shower.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Let's look at the living room.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50Then you have, it's very simple, but a sweet little sitting room.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54- It's very sweet, isn't it? - Really nice.- Lovely fireplace.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58Yes, you see the rocks from the moors and a lovely log burner.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02It's a working chimney. That's really nice.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04- For those cold nights.- Yes.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08- So this is OK, in terms of downstairs space?- Yeah.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Yes, it's absolutely right. We are downsizing.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- This is the sort of size we'd want. - Let's look upstairs.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16See if that fits the bill.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19'So far, they seem pleased by the interior.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23'Leading off the kitchen, there's also a conservatory,

0:12:23 > 0:12:27'but now we're heading upstairs, to where there are three bedrooms.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29'One is set up as an office.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32'Another is being used for storage.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34'There's also a well-fitted family bathroom.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37'But let's see if their bedroom would measure up.'

0:12:37 > 0:12:40This is the master bedroom.

0:12:40 > 0:12:45- This is about the right size. - We don't need a big house. It's just the two of us.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48This is not the only possibility.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53You wanted some space to convert, some space to have a holiday let.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- This property gives you that in spades!- A-ha! Lead on.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01'On top of a perfectly proportioned home for them,

0:13:01 > 0:13:05'what's outside could generate a robust income.'

0:13:05 > 0:13:09- This is your holiday let potential. - Oh, wow!

0:13:09 > 0:13:13It's a beautiful, very well maintained barn building.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17They have planning, which has lapsed but would be easy to get again.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20- That's good.- Inside, it's a shell. It's not up and running.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Is that something you'd be prepared to do?

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- Well, that would depend on the price.- Mm, it would.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29It keeps coming back to the price.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32One more bit then I'll tell you the price!

0:13:32 > 0:13:35'The outside space is a major selling point.

0:13:35 > 0:13:40'It comes with over seven acres, so lots of land for the dogs to roam

0:13:40 > 0:13:42'and the potential for a caravan site.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46'Time to take a view on what else our first house gives them.'

0:13:46 > 0:13:51There's also this, sort of... I don't know. Some sort of shed.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55- Right.- That also has, in the past, had planning permission

0:13:55 > 0:13:59- to turn it into a free-standing holiday let, simple.- Oh, right.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03That's very good as well. Are we in the national park here?

0:14:03 > 0:14:06At the end of your land is the beginning of the moors.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09That's Dalby Forest over there,

0:14:09 > 0:14:12one of the biggest mountain bike tracks in the country.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Very famous.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16You've also got a big chunk of this woodland,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19then a big chunk of land behind the house.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23- So, just over seven acres. - That's nice.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26- It's the full package. - It is.- It is.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28What about the price?

0:14:28 > 0:14:29Hm!

0:14:29 > 0:14:34Well, you wouldn't show it to us if we couldn't afford it, would you?

0:14:34 > 0:14:36- 475?- Mm-hm.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43I think with all the land it's probably more expensive. About 520.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Luckily for you, it's somewhere in the middle.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48It's £500 short of £500,000.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50499,500.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54- Go and explore a bit more, then I'll meet you at the front.- Thank you.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03'Our fantastic first property comes in £50,000 under budget

0:15:03 > 0:15:05'and is awash with opportunities.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07'The main house provides...'

0:15:23 > 0:15:25Wow!

0:15:25 > 0:15:28- Just takes your breath away. - It's beautiful.- Yeah.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Especially with all the heather.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33You can see for miles over there.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Just think, this could be ours.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38When Alistair brought us to the house, I thought it was stunning.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42The barns would be ideal to be converted into holiday lets.

0:15:42 > 0:15:47The only down side is, of course, the isolation.

0:15:47 > 0:15:48It is just stunning.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52The more I've seen the more I like the property.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54It's perfect.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57It really is a beautifully quiet spot here,

0:15:57 > 0:16:02apart from the squawk of the chicken and your tender footsteps.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04- All done?- We are.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05Thank you.

0:16:05 > 0:16:11I'm going to whisk you away to the next property before you have too many thoughts on this one.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24'The North York Moors' dramatic scenery is one of contrasts,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27'ranging from lush green valleys and woodland

0:16:27 > 0:16:29'to a heritage coastline,

0:16:29 > 0:16:33'set within its array of manmade landmarks

0:16:33 > 0:16:36'that stand testament to how people have settled in

0:16:36 > 0:16:38'and navigated this rural landscape.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42'A prime example of this is the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45'which runs from Pickering, the gateway to the Moors,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48'all the way to the coastal town of Whitby.

0:16:48 > 0:16:53'The North Yorkshire Moor's Historical Railway Trust help with its maintenance.

0:16:53 > 0:16:58'Vice-chairman Chris Cubitt has offered to take our buyers aboard.

0:16:58 > 0:17:03'This nostalgic journey is strongly linked to Bernadette's family heritage.'

0:17:03 > 0:17:06- We really looked forward to coming. - It feels like we're coming home.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10My grandfather was the last signalman at Levisham.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14We're coming up to Levisham now, just six miles from Pickering.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16I've got a few photographs.

0:17:16 > 0:17:22One in particular which we thought was quite interesting was this one.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26- You probably recognise the engine. - I recognise the engine.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30And I could tell you the date, roughly. It was April 1964.

0:17:30 > 0:17:35'And some 50 years later, the station remains as it did in her grandfather's day.'

0:17:35 > 0:17:38We're just pulling into Levisham.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41You say your granddad was a signalman here?

0:17:41 > 0:17:43That must be where he used to live.

0:17:43 > 0:17:48Yes. There was the two station cottages after, yes.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50'The North Yorkshire Moors line was planned

0:17:50 > 0:17:53'by famous railway engineer George Stephenson

0:17:53 > 0:17:56'as a way of opening up trade routes inland from Whitby.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59'These days, it's popular with day passengers

0:17:59 > 0:18:02'and a source of pride for the Trust.'

0:18:02 > 0:18:07- How many people are working on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway? - We have 100 full-time staff.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Then we have 200 to 300 volunteer staff.

0:18:10 > 0:18:15'First opened in 1835 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18'the first trains were initially horse-drawn,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21'except when they were hauled by rope up a steep incline

0:18:21 > 0:18:25'into the moors at Goathland, which is the next stop.'

0:18:25 > 0:18:29We're now at Goathland, which is our celebrity station, really.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33We have people coming who've seen it on Heartbeat.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Aidensfield Station is what people know it as.

0:18:35 > 0:18:40Originally, when the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was set up in 1967,

0:18:40 > 0:18:43Goathland was the headquarters of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

0:18:43 > 0:18:46and during time everything was moved to Pickering,

0:18:46 > 0:18:48where our head office is now.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52'It may be nearing the end of the line for this journey,

0:18:52 > 0:18:56'but we're going full steam ahead, as our house hunt continues.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08'Our second property takes us coastwards to Robin Hood's Bay.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10'Set in the cliff-edged shoreline,

0:19:10 > 0:19:14'this former fishing village is a popular tourist destination,

0:19:14 > 0:19:17'as it's close to Whitby, with a seven-mile walk

0:19:17 > 0:19:19'along the Cleveland Way linking the two.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21'Our second property embraces the fact

0:19:21 > 0:19:25'that this area is a draw for holiday makers.'

0:19:25 > 0:19:28You'll never guess why I've brought you to this property(!)

0:19:28 > 0:19:31- I think we might!- Yes, you might.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35- Cos look at the view - Robin Hood's Bay.- It's fantastic.

0:19:35 > 0:19:40- It's lovely.- As you can see, this property has a caravan park.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44- Up and running.- Five hard standings. - Yes.- OK.

0:19:44 > 0:19:49This is the property, a 1920s house, extended in all sorts of directions.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- Yeah.- Yeah. - So what are your thoughts on this?

0:19:52 > 0:19:54- LAUGHING:- Mm!

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Not so keen on the house, I have to say.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Not quite higgledy-piggledy enough.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02- What about you, Bob?- Um... Yes.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06I know it's not exactly what we were looking for from the outside,

0:20:06 > 0:20:10but let's see what's inside and what else is going for it.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13- So shall we have a look inside? - Yes, please.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16'Although the regular exterior doesn't appeal to Bernadette,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20'she should reserve judgment because, as she'll see later on,

0:20:20 > 0:20:22'this house does have bags of potential.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25'First, let's get her view on the interior.'

0:20:25 > 0:20:29We're going in the back door, country style.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- Straight into the kitchen. - Ah, it's quite pleasant.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- It's spacious, isn't it? - I was thinking the opposite.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39- I was thinking it's a little bit small.- Right.- Sorry.- Not at all.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42It goes through into a formal dining room

0:20:42 > 0:20:45that looks out through a big bay window at the sea.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49- You could knock through, if you wanted to.- Yes.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Yes, I think that would have to be a possibility. Yes.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57We haven't finished the tour. Let's have a look at the front.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01- Nice hall.- Mm-hm.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03- Nice hall.- Spacious.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07So here we have, well, this is their sitting room.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11Like most Victorian houses, you have two big rooms at the front.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15There's the dining room on that side and then this on this side.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19They extended just before they moved in, about 20 years ago.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23They put this sort of bay extension on.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26- Mm. It makes the most of the views. - Yeah.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29- And brings in a lot more light. - It does.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Shifting your mood as you've come to the front?

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Yes, it's nicer at the front. Yes.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38And through that door, there's a little added bonus.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40- Ooh.- Oh, right.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47So, surprise, surprise!

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- It's another house!- Oh, right!

0:21:50 > 0:21:53It's a self-contained house.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56It's got a kitchenette and a sitting room,

0:21:56 > 0:21:59and upstairs a bedroom and a bathroom.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02Oh, it's very sweet.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04With a separate entrance.

0:22:04 > 0:22:09- So it could be, if you separated it out properly, a holiday let.- Hm.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12- Yes. Distinct possibility. - You're being quite muted.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16I'm getting it's nice, but it's not YOUR nice.

0:22:16 > 0:22:17- Yes.- Right.- Yes.

0:22:17 > 0:22:22- Nothing's won you over yet? - It's not...pulling at heartstrings.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25- No. And Rob?- No, very practical.

0:22:25 > 0:22:30My worry is that my son sees this and thinks, "I'll move back in!"

0:22:30 > 0:22:31LAUGHTER

0:22:31 > 0:22:36'I've got a feeling Bernadette has already made her mind up,

0:22:36 > 0:22:38'but hopefully upstairs will sway her.

0:22:38 > 0:22:42'On the first floor, there are three bedrooms, including two doubles,

0:22:42 > 0:22:44'and a family bathroom.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47'But we'll take a look at what would be theirs.'

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Then this, the master bedroom.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55- With its en suite.- Oh, very nice.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57- Oh, that's nice.- Yes.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01- That's plenty big enough. - Hm. Yeah. Another good size room.

0:23:01 > 0:23:06Again, it's all about lying in bed and looking out over the view.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10- The view, yeah.- What is it that's not doing it for you?

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Just the style, or...? - Yes, I think so. It's just...

0:23:13 > 0:23:18- It's not old enough for you.- No. - She much prefers the older property.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21I do as well, but I'm more worried about the business

0:23:21 > 0:23:24and worry about the house later.

0:23:24 > 0:23:29- Talking about the business, we should have a look at the business options outside.- Right.

0:23:29 > 0:23:34'Our buyers are clearly looking at this property with two very different mind sets.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37'Bob is focusing on the business potential.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40'Bernadette is more concerned on the look and feel of the house.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44'As we move outside, I'm confident we'll address Bob's priorities.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46'But who has the final say?'

0:23:46 > 0:23:50It's a lovely verandah they put on to maximise the view.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Yeah. The verandah's very nice.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57- That is such a lovely view. - The view's absolutely to die for.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01There's quite a lot more which you can explore later.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03There's a double garage and a workshop.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06There's also a veggie garden. There's a duck pond.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09There's a stable block. There's an orchard.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11There's two and a half acres of land.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Quite a considerable plot.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17They've maximised the caravans. They've got five standings there.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21- They also have permission for ten camping places.- Goodness!

0:24:21 > 0:24:25It does fit your brief, in a way. It gives you everything you want.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28- But clearly it's not quite fitting the taste.- It does.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32You've given us a holiday let. You've given us the caravans.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35- You've given us land. - How much do you think it costs,

0:24:35 > 0:24:38this little package of business potential?

0:24:38 > 0:24:42Well, there's a lot here. Lots of land, lot of potential.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45The holiday letting side and the camping facilities.

0:24:45 > 0:24:49I think it's going to be right at the top of our budget, about 550.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51- 525.- 525.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54Well, in this instance,

0:24:54 > 0:24:57you're both...wrong.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00- LAUGHTER - Actually, it is a bit over budget.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03It's on at 560. Probably a big sigh of relief.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08You've got an ace card. You can say, "I love it, but can't afford it."

0:25:08 > 0:25:10I'd like you to have a look around.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14There is a lot to look at, in the grounds particularly, but also inside.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Even though it might be not your taste with the furnishing,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20I think it does have good bones and some potential.

0:25:20 > 0:25:24- Give it a go.- A substantial house. - Yes.- OK. Thank you.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30Ah! It's Bernadette who makes the decisions. I've clocked that now.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34From the beginning she didn't really like it, and that's fine.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37Most people make their decision about a house in ten seconds.

0:25:37 > 0:25:41No matter how many of the bits of the puzzle we did offer,

0:25:41 > 0:25:45if it doesn't really make her feel at home, then what can we do?

0:25:48 > 0:25:50'Priced at £560,000,

0:25:50 > 0:25:54'our second property is £10,000 over their budget.

0:25:54 > 0:25:59'On paper, however, it does meet many of their demands...'

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Not a bad looking property.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Not the sort we would normally consider buying.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24I like to keep an open mind because I'm worried about the business side,

0:26:24 > 0:26:27whether we can earn enough to survive.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30In one respect, you delivered everything we asked for -

0:26:30 > 0:26:33the holiday let, the caravans and the land.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36Unfortunately, the house is just not my cup of tea,

0:26:36 > 0:26:38not to my taste at all.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It is a beautiful view.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43I suppose the trouble with having caravans in front of your view,

0:26:43 > 0:26:45it sort of spoils it a bit.

0:26:45 > 0:26:50I was thinking about whether you could move things around, but anyway, we're done here.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51Right.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55Time now to regroup and have a think about what you've seen,

0:26:55 > 0:26:59- and prepare yourself for tomorrow. - Yeah.- Sounds exciting.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16'As the day draws to a close, it marks the end

0:27:16 > 0:27:19'of a thought-provoking first day's house hunting.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31'Armed with their £550,000, Bob and Bernadette from Huntingdon

0:27:31 > 0:27:35'want to put down roots and start up a holiday let business

0:27:35 > 0:27:37'in North Yorkshire.

0:27:37 > 0:27:41'Our property pendulum has swung between finding them a charming home

0:27:41 > 0:27:44'and serving up the income they're looking for.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47'So, what will they make of the mystery property?'

0:27:47 > 0:27:51I'm not quite sure. I'm a bit dumbstruck at the moment!

0:27:51 > 0:27:55'And I discover how Yorkshire's music and dance tradition

0:27:55 > 0:27:57'is being kept alive.'

0:27:59 > 0:28:02You can understand why they call it God's own country.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06You can also understand why people pay a premium to live here.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11That premium is putting a pressure on our buyers' £550,000 budget.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Partly because Bernadette, quite rightly, knows what she wants

0:28:14 > 0:28:16in terms of living accommodation.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18She doesn't want to be too remote, either.

0:28:18 > 0:28:23Also, because Bob is very conscious of getting some income from a business.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26So the mystery house really gives them everything.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29It's a village location, a quirky old property,

0:28:29 > 0:28:32and it's an up and running business.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35However, it is a bit of a long shot.

0:28:41 > 0:28:45It struck me that it might be more imperative to have a house that you love

0:28:45 > 0:28:49rather than a business making money, does that seem like a fair comment?

0:28:49 > 0:28:54We really need both. We need to be happy in the house as well as having a business.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56Yes. Yes, that's very true.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00With the budget we've got and the value of properties up here,

0:29:00 > 0:29:03we know it's a little bit tight,

0:29:03 > 0:29:08but having the property that we want to live in for some time

0:29:08 > 0:29:10is very important.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14That will allow us, we think, to develop a business,

0:29:14 > 0:29:18so we probably could survive for a while, as we have work done

0:29:18 > 0:29:21or have holiday lets built.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24'For the mystery house, we're driving ten miles north of Pickering

0:29:24 > 0:29:27'into the North York Moors to Rosedale Abbey.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31'However, I'm taking my buyers on a slight detour.'

0:29:31 > 0:29:35- This is what you came to Yorkshire for, isn't it?- Yes!

0:29:35 > 0:29:38- These amazing views!- It is.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40This used to be, you can't really imagine it,

0:29:40 > 0:29:45but back in the late 19th century, this was a massive industrial area.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48They found ironstone in this hillside.

0:29:48 > 0:29:53- These were the kilns where they purified it.- OK.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57It was amazing. It was like the Klondike. There were 500 people.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01In the space of ten years, there were 3,000 people living here.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03There are many abbeys scattered across the moors.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07There are stone crosses that guide your way, if you were a pilgrim.

0:30:07 > 0:30:11- 43 of them.- Presumably, they'll go, what, Whitby...

0:30:11 > 0:30:15- Whitby to York.- To York? Oh, right.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19- You can still follow the crosses, apparently.- A good walk that.

0:30:19 > 0:30:23A good walk! Let's do the first abbey, which is Rosedale down there.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25- Follow me.- Lead on.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28'Just down in the valley sits our mystery property,

0:30:28 > 0:30:32'which marries their different interests in a rather original way.'

0:30:33 > 0:30:37- This is a very good mystery house. - BERNADETTE GIGGLES

0:30:37 > 0:30:40Because you were very keen to have a business.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43- You were very keen to be in the centre of the town.- Right.

0:30:43 > 0:30:45And so this...

0:30:47 > 0:30:50- ..is for sale.- Oh, that's different!

0:30:50 > 0:30:55- CHUCKLING:- It's Rosedale Abbey village shop and tea rooms.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59- It certainly is a mystery.- And I think it's very interesting for you.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03Probably not what you were thinking about, but in terms of a business,

0:31:03 > 0:31:06it's very, very good.

0:31:06 > 0:31:11- Mm.- It has a turnover of around 172,000.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13- That's good.- Blimey.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16Campsites all around, so there's lots of guaranteed trade.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20You don't even have to get out of bed to get your milk,

0:31:20 > 0:31:23because it's actually in your front room!

0:31:23 > 0:31:28- What are your first thoughts about running a village store and tea room?- Um...

0:31:28 > 0:31:32I'm not quite sure, actually. I'm a bit dumb-struck at the moment!

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Yes, my gob is smacked!

0:31:37 > 0:31:41'A complete surprise it may be, but now I've reassured them

0:31:41 > 0:31:45'that the setting and the sums of our mystery proposition stack up,

0:31:45 > 0:31:49'let's see if it's a lifestyle choice they'd sign up to.'

0:31:50 > 0:31:54Come in. Isn't this exciting? This could be your village shop.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57- Not your village shop, but your shop in the village.- Mm. Could be.

0:31:57 > 0:32:01- Is it something you could imagine yourself doing?- I think so.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04Yeah, it's just such a surprise still, I'm trying...

0:32:04 > 0:32:08I think you two would be good running a village shop.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11- I'm thinking of the amount of work. - Yeah. That is the thing.

0:32:11 > 0:32:15- It's a job.- Well, we've got to work. We've got to earn money.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19- We haven't seen the house yet, either.- Exactly.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22So this is the shop. Next door, a very busy tea room.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25- Look, lovely cakes.- Mmm!

0:32:25 > 0:32:28The smell of coffee. It's a good sized tea room.

0:32:28 > 0:32:33This is the business - the shop, the tea room, both very successful. The house is directly above.

0:32:34 > 0:32:39'Now we've tackled the business, it's time to look at the mystery property in detail.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43'Attached to the cafe downstairs is the professional kitchen,

0:32:43 > 0:32:45'but all their accommodation is upstairs.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47'First up, the main reception room.'

0:32:47 > 0:32:52So, it's an unconventional house. All the living space is upstairs.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54And this is the sitting room.

0:32:54 > 0:32:58- Oh, it's a nice size. - Nice and light.- Nice and light.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00Yeah. You really are in the heart of the village.

0:33:00 > 0:33:05You can see everything that's going on, but you're up high and relatively private.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09But it is small. It's a downsizing move.

0:33:09 > 0:33:13- It is.- How do you feel? Obviously, you haven't seen it all,

0:33:13 > 0:33:16but in terms of living above your business?

0:33:16 > 0:33:19I honestly don't know. This is... I'm still...

0:33:19 > 0:33:21- Processing.- Slightly in shock.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24We're picking our chins up off the floor!

0:33:24 > 0:33:27'There are three good sized bedrooms.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30'We're heading straight for what could be their room.'

0:33:30 > 0:33:33This is what they're using as the master bedroom.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37- Oh. It's light and airy, isn't it? - It's a nice size, as well.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41As you know, it's a surprise to us. We've not lived above anywhere before.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44It feels very homely, actually.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46There's a nice feel about the property.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49- I don't have a problem with it. - I'm going to ask Bernadette.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53I know that you are more... It's more important to you.

0:33:53 > 0:33:55Can you imagine this as a home?

0:33:55 > 0:34:00- Yes, I think we'd need to do a bit of work.- Sure.- It's do-able.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03'The two remaining bedrooms lead off the main hallway,

0:34:03 > 0:34:07'one being a large double and the other currently used as an office.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10'There's also a light, well-fitted kitchen-diner.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13'Time to survey what outside offers.'

0:34:13 > 0:34:15This is the private garden.

0:34:15 > 0:34:19In terms of land, it's not anywhere as big as the other properties,

0:34:19 > 0:34:22but it's altogether unlike the other properties, so...

0:34:22 > 0:34:26- That's true.- What about finances? How much do you think it costs?

0:34:26 > 0:34:29I think it's going to be above our budget.

0:34:29 > 0:34:30560?

0:34:30 > 0:34:34- Bernadette?- I think it might be a little bit more.

0:34:34 > 0:34:39- 575?- 575. You both guessed considerably over your budget.

0:34:39 > 0:34:42- Actually, this property is under your budget.- That's a surprise!

0:34:42 > 0:34:45It's on at 539,950.

0:34:46 > 0:34:48- Oh!- Hm.- Just under 540.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52That's actually... That's a surprise, but a pleasant surprise.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54Good. That's what we like to hear.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57So, I'd like you to explore, check out the village.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00Spy on the clientele! See who's coming in and out!

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Think about the house. I appreciate it's a different offering.

0:35:03 > 0:35:09- Then I'll see you out the front, maybe with a cup of tea. - Sounds good.- In you go.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15They took that very well, cos even I would be thrown

0:35:15 > 0:35:19if they gave me this up and running business in a beautiful place.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21Not quite what I was expecting.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25Well done, Bernadette and Bob, for taking it on the chin.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Be interesting to see what they actually think.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31'Priced at just under £540,000,

0:35:31 > 0:35:35'our mystery proposition brings work and life all under one roof...'

0:35:55 > 0:35:57I was completely shocked and surprised.

0:35:57 > 0:36:02I'd guessed it might be a run-down property we'd have to restore.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05I had no idea it would be an up-and-running business

0:36:05 > 0:36:09in such a beautiful village, so it was a huge surprise.

0:36:09 > 0:36:14The outdoor space is actually quite good for a property with this sort of business.

0:36:14 > 0:36:18That's where it would be a bit more difficult for us.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21It'll be harder for us with the dogs, people coming and going.

0:36:21 > 0:36:25We need to think long and hard about that and see whether that's do-able.

0:36:25 > 0:36:29I think it's a delightful village, a lovely shop,

0:36:29 > 0:36:34good viable business, the accommodation is big enough.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37I'm just not sure that we'd both want to be working full-time.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40We have to sit down and have a good talk about this one.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44Old-school telephone box! Can't beat those!

0:36:44 > 0:36:47- Hello, guys.- Hi. - Looked around?- Yes.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50- Tea and cake?- Yes.- Excellent.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53So, now time to reflect on the houses that we've seen.

0:36:53 > 0:36:55Come with me.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09'Along with spectacular coastline and beautiful beaches,

0:37:09 > 0:37:13'the historic town of Whitby has a strong cultural heritage.

0:37:13 > 0:37:17'A highlight of its annual calendar is Whitby Folk Week,

0:37:17 > 0:37:19'which takes place every August.

0:37:19 > 0:37:24'Now in its 47th year, this is one of the country's biggest folk festivals

0:37:24 > 0:37:27'and celebrates the music, dance and song of Yorkshire

0:37:27 > 0:37:30'and the rest of the British Isles.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33'I've come to the festival on its penultimate day to meet Barry Evans,

0:37:33 > 0:37:37'one of the directors, to find out about the important role

0:37:37 > 0:37:41'the event plays in showcasing the country's traditional music.'

0:37:41 > 0:37:44Sadly, the fishing's gone out of Whitby.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Is this a good tourist boost?

0:37:46 > 0:37:51The folk festival is the largest income generator in the year.

0:37:51 > 0:37:56There are still core people keeping the traditions alive, thankfully.

0:37:56 > 0:38:01I find it all too sad that too much of the population of this country

0:38:01 > 0:38:05know too little about our musical and dance heritage.

0:38:05 > 0:38:09- Is it singing and dancing, what else?- Singing, dancing.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13We have some pure children's events.

0:38:13 > 0:38:17It's one of the largest story-telling festivals in the country.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20We encompass all the genres of traditional music and dance.

0:38:20 > 0:38:24I know you've got lots to do, but you have organised a taster?

0:38:24 > 0:38:28We've got you meeting the Yorkshire Garland Group, who'll run you through a song.

0:38:28 > 0:38:33- You're going that way and over to the spa.- See you later. - Cheers, Alistair. Thanks.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39'Before I venture onto the streets of Whitby to sample some music and dance first-hand,

0:38:39 > 0:38:43'Ray Padgett and some members of the Yorkshire Garland Group,

0:38:43 > 0:38:46'founded in 2006, have offered to open my ears

0:38:46 > 0:38:49'to the county's folk song tradition.'

0:38:51 > 0:38:55Is there a kind of quintessential Yorkshire song

0:38:55 > 0:38:58or maybe from the coast along here, Whitby way?

0:38:58 > 0:39:02Well, I think probably the most famous song

0:39:02 > 0:39:05is a song called Three Score And Ten,

0:39:05 > 0:39:09which was to do with a disaster, a sea disaster...

0:39:09 > 0:39:12- Always about a disaster at sea! - Of course!

0:39:12 > 0:39:14It started off as a poem.

0:39:14 > 0:39:18There's been a lot of research done about it since.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21- You're all of you going to sing? - Yes.- Good.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23Take it away.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25CONCERTINA BEGINS

0:39:29 > 0:39:33# And it's three score and ten

0:39:33 > 0:39:38# Boys and men Were lost from Grimsby town

0:39:38 > 0:39:42# From Yarmouth down to Scarborough

0:39:42 > 0:39:46# Many hundreds more were drowned

0:39:46 > 0:39:50# And it's three score and ten

0:39:50 > 0:39:55# Boys and men Were lost from Grimsby town... #

0:39:55 > 0:39:57'Oh, dear. That song may tell a lamentable story,

0:39:57 > 0:40:01'but the festival at large sets the tone of celebrating

0:40:01 > 0:40:03'our country's historic musical roots.

0:40:03 > 0:40:05'Time to return to our buyers

0:40:05 > 0:40:08'where, hopefully, our houses have hit the right note.'

0:40:12 > 0:40:14How has it been coming back to Yorkshire?

0:40:14 > 0:40:19- Has it confirmed this is the place you want to move? - Most definitely. Yes.

0:40:19 > 0:40:24The houses, one by one. The first house, quite remote, very beautiful.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27- What are your thoughts about that, in retrospect?- It was lovely.

0:40:27 > 0:40:31From my point of view, it was perfect. It was the setting.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34It was so peaceful. There was lots of wildlife.

0:40:34 > 0:40:39The outbuildings presented opportunities to develop the holiday lets.

0:40:39 > 0:40:44The house was quite small, but that's the size we're looking for.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47So truly downsizing.

0:40:47 > 0:40:52Just wonderful, and for people wanting to holiday and get away from it all,

0:40:52 > 0:40:56I think we could provide a really good setting for them.

0:40:56 > 0:41:01Bernadette, your worry about being remote, has that got bigger or smaller over time?

0:41:01 > 0:41:03I think we'd have to consider it.

0:41:03 > 0:41:08What about property number two? This was much more on the beaten track.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10- This is where a lot of tourists came.- Yes.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14Wonderful views! Absolutely wonderful views!

0:41:14 > 0:41:17I'm afraid the house just didn't do it for me at all.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Just not my style.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22Having the vans so close to the property

0:41:22 > 0:41:28was not really to my liking but, again, I was trying to look from a business point of view.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31- But definitely not your style of house.- No.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35The mystery house, this was a business in a period property.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38You couldn't see the business in your sitting room.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40It was underneath you.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43- What are your thoughts about the mystery house?- It was lovely.

0:41:43 > 0:41:48The village was absolutely beautiful and the business was do-able,

0:41:48 > 0:41:51but it would be very intrusive in our lives.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54It came as such a shock - not an unpleasant shock -

0:41:54 > 0:41:59because we hadn't ever considered that sort of business and lifestyle.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01It does add further complications.

0:42:01 > 0:42:07We could be tied to the property and the business for relatively long periods of time.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10That's not what we've been looking for, originally.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14What happens next? Would you revisit any of them?

0:42:14 > 0:42:18Property number one, as I've said all the way through,

0:42:18 > 0:42:20was fantastic.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22- Your favourite. - It is my favourite, yes.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25- It really does sum up what- I- was looking for.

0:42:25 > 0:42:30- I know Bernadette would like to pick it up and move it close to a village.- I would.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33- That would be my dream. - But that was perfect.

0:42:33 > 0:42:38Once they invent a machine that picks up houses and puts them in places, I'll be a rich man!

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Well, I hope you come up here and find a business

0:42:41 > 0:42:45- that doesn't intrude too much on your lifestyle. - Thank you.- Thank you.

0:42:50 > 0:42:54North Yorkshire delivered beautiful landscape and incredible properties, I thought,

0:42:54 > 0:42:58although Bob and Bernadette illustrate a classic escape dilemma.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02Once you find a beautiful home with views like this,

0:43:02 > 0:43:06do you really want to share it with strangers to pay the bills?

0:43:06 > 0:43:11Luckily, you at home don't have to find an answer to that, because you can keep on watching.
