0:00:02 > 0:00:04Today I'm in a county that's believed to be

0:00:04 > 0:00:06the first place ever to see a man fly a plane.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08It's an achievement that's helped pave the way

0:00:08 > 0:00:11for hundreds of thousands of journeys around the world.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12So, where am I?

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Find out on Escape To The Country.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46On today's show,

0:00:46 > 0:00:50I'll be helping a pair of keen walkers put their best foot forward

0:00:50 > 0:00:54as they start a new chapter of their lives in the countryside.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57In one property, it's not long before there's a dispute brewing

0:00:57 > 0:01:00over ownership of a prized room.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- Well, this must be my room, then. - No, you can't have this one.

0:01:03 > 0:01:08But then our mystery house takes them up, up and away.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11It's quite high up, isn't it? It's just as well I like heights!

0:01:13 > 0:01:17Today, I'm in North Yorkshire and this stunning village

0:01:17 > 0:01:20is Brompton, the birthplace of aviation.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24It's here the inventor Sir George Cayley, a local landowner,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26put pen to paper and hammer to nail

0:01:26 > 0:01:30and constructed the first functional glider.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33When he'd finished it, he decided that a man of his standing

0:01:33 > 0:01:36couldn't be seen gallivanting around in a monoplane

0:01:36 > 0:01:43and in 1853 he ordered his coachman to strap in and take flight.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Now, despite being a pioneering design of the times,

0:01:45 > 0:01:50it came to a crashing end, at which point the coachman refused

0:01:50 > 0:01:55to go back up in the air and proclaimed that he was hired to drive, not fly.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59So, rest assured, whether you're looking at this county

0:01:59 > 0:02:03from up in the sky or from the land, there's plenty to see.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08North Yorkshire is bordered by Cumbria and Lancashire to the west

0:02:08 > 0:02:10and County Durham to the north.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13As the largest English county, it stretches almost

0:02:13 > 0:02:193,400 square miles, which is 15% of the entire country's landmass.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Covering such a large area,

0:02:21 > 0:02:26the county provides an incredible range of rural landscapes.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29The undulating Yorkshire Wolds towards the south-east of the region

0:02:29 > 0:02:31stretch for mile upon mile,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33and the upland Yorkshire Dales in the north-west,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36a collection of hills and river valleys,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39feature the county's characteristic dry stone walls.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40While in coastal areas,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43glimpsing the fishing villages that cling to the shoreline,

0:02:43 > 0:02:48you could be forgiven for believing you were in Cornwall or Devon.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53The scenery may be stunning,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56but that does have an effect on what you can get for your money.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58The average price of a detached house

0:02:58 > 0:03:01is £265,000.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04However, you will have to dig a little deeper

0:03:04 > 0:03:06if you want to live in one of the popular villages,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09such as Pickering, on the borders of the moors.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Surprisingly, if you head inside the National Park,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15the prices can come down quite considerably.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17For this, you get fantastic views

0:03:17 > 0:03:21but your only neighbours will probably be sheep.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23So, whatever your budget,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27North Yorkshire has a little bit of something for everyone.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30If you're after a classic and cosy home,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33then head to the villages that dot the headlands.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35They're awash with traditional properties,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38some even dating back to the 1600s.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41A fisherman's terrace in one of the coastal areas

0:03:41 > 0:03:46can range from about £175,000 to £330,000.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51The county's 18th century mines may have fallen into disrepair

0:03:51 > 0:03:54but the Georgian style that typifies the period

0:03:54 > 0:03:55are still highly sought-after.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58These family homes can typically command prices

0:03:58 > 0:04:02ranging from £300,000 to £400,000.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05And if you really want to get away from it all

0:04:05 > 0:04:08and experience the area's farming heritage,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11there are plenty of historic limestone farmhouses to choose from.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Dating from the 1700s, it's not unusual for prices

0:04:14 > 0:04:18to start around the £250,000 mark for a project.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23But they can reach upwards of £400,000 depending on the location.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Well, North Yorkshire certainly provides

0:04:27 > 0:04:30a good range of property styles to pick from.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34So, let's meet today's buyers to find out what they're looking for.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Early retirees Daryl and Penny live on the outskirts of the city of Plymouth.

0:04:38 > 0:04:42They've spent eight years in their current home

0:04:42 > 0:04:45but with work no longer an issue, they've decided that now

0:04:45 > 0:04:48is the right time to make a move to the north of England.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51The reason why we would like to move now is because our children

0:04:51 > 0:04:53have both left home

0:04:53 > 0:04:57and we would like to actually live in the countryside.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00As we've visited North Yorkshire on many occasions,

0:05:00 > 0:05:04we think that is the place for us for the next chapter of our lives.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06The next chapter it may be,

0:05:06 > 0:05:08but things haven't always been so simple.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13Daryl and I met in 2003 when I moved to my new job

0:05:13 > 0:05:17and Daryl was currently working there.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Firstly, we didn't actually like each other

0:05:19 > 0:05:21although he did like my bottom.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Well, things seem to have gone swimmingly ever since

0:05:28 > 0:05:30and our buyers certainly have a real zest for life,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32which they're hoping to build on

0:05:32 > 0:05:35when they make their move to North Yorkshire.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38What we're most looking forward to is having the countryside

0:05:38 > 0:05:43on our doorstep and enjoying lovely long walks with our new dog.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47Opening up the back door, out the back gate and there we go,

0:05:47 > 0:05:51off for a walk, without having to get into our car and travel anywhere.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54So the chance for country walks are high on the wish list,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57but so too is outside space at their new home.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00One of the things that I hope to do when we're in our new property...

0:06:00 > 0:06:03If the garden is large enough, to have our own vegetable plot.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05I cook all the time,

0:06:05 > 0:06:09and I would use the vegetables in my home-made soups.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11I'd also like to keep bees, if possible.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16I did a beekeeping course and I find the subject quite fascinating.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19With veg and honey already on the menu,

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Daryl's hoping to keep his side of the deal by providing some fish.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26I took up fishing a couple of years ago

0:06:26 > 0:06:31and I go out in the Plymouth area and down into Cornwall as well.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35But it is all sea fishing, and the thought of going down to the river

0:06:35 > 0:06:37and spending a couple of hours doing a little bit of fishing

0:06:37 > 0:06:40and maybe bringing home a couple of trout for my dinner

0:06:40 > 0:06:42would be absolutely lovely.

0:06:42 > 0:06:43Indeed it would.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47Their current home is already on the market and as a result,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50our buyers have a clear idea of their finances.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Our budget for the move is £400,000.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Daryl and Penny are keen to live north of York,

0:07:03 > 0:07:05around the market town of Pickering,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08a good location for country walks on the moors.

0:07:08 > 0:07:09I'm meeting them

0:07:09 > 0:07:13to find out more about what they're looking for in their new home.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17- Daryl and Penny, welcome to North Yorkshire!- Thank you.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21Let's look at this request for your dream home, come on.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25We're looking for three to four bedrooms, a large kitchen/diner...

0:07:25 > 0:07:28I would love an extra room downstairs just for me,

0:07:28 > 0:07:30just so I can get away from Penny.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Oh, what are you going to do in this extra room? Dare I ask?

0:07:33 > 0:07:36- I'm going to be playing my games. - You're a gamer? Right.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39We bring you to the most beautiful county and you'll be gaming?

0:07:39 > 0:07:41- He won't be using that room very much, will he?- Hopefully not.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- Just on rainy days.- What about you? What are you looking for?

0:07:44 > 0:07:48I would like to have a nice garden with views, please.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53And a conservatory or a sunroom. Somewhere I can sit and read.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57So come on then, your budget. What's our top mark?

0:07:57 > 0:07:58The top mark is £400,000

0:07:58 > 0:08:01although we're hoping to spend a little bit less.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04So, with all those requirements, that magical list,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- shall we get going, get started? - Yes, please.- Let's go.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12So, for their maximum budget of £400,000,

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Daryl and Penny are looking for a minimum of...

0:08:30 > 0:08:33We've found three fantastic properties to tempt them,

0:08:33 > 0:08:38but I won't reveal the price of each until they've had a guess first.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40The last of these is our mystery house,

0:08:40 > 0:08:43a property they may not have chosen on paper

0:08:43 > 0:08:46but which could literally have Daryl and Penny living the high life.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Time to hit the property trail.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52You currently live in a modern house.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55What sort of house would you ideally like here?

0:08:55 > 0:09:01I would like a traditional, Yorkshire, stone-built house. Definitely.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04I love the look of them from the outside, so if you were to show us

0:09:04 > 0:09:10something which is traditional, I'm sure I would like it.

0:09:10 > 0:09:16Well, let's see if we can make Penny smile with our first property.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19We're heading 20 miles north of York to Nunnington

0:09:19 > 0:09:21in the Howardian Hills, a designated area

0:09:21 > 0:09:23of outstanding natural beauty,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26dotted with stunning and historic villages.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Do any of you know this area at all?

0:09:30 > 0:09:32No, I don't. It's a new village name for me.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33We're about 12 miles from the moor.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Community is so important. Very, very friendly village.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40You've got the pub, you've got the hall...

0:09:40 > 0:09:43They have lots of quiz nights and things going on.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46So, as first impressions go, is this what you had in mind?

0:09:46 > 0:09:48- Yes, it is.- Perfect. - It's absolutely lovely.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51- Good. Excited?- I am! - We're going to walk up the hill,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54but before we go we've got to mention the river, haven't we?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56- Absolutely.- The River Rye.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58- Fishing.- Yes.- You can get a licence, you can fish here,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01and the club house is just across the bridge there.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04There we go. So, let's head up, find the first house.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09House number one is a Grade II listed Georgian home,

0:10:09 > 0:10:13dating back to 1810, and is constructed in York stone.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Here is your first property.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19That is lovely. That is very, very cute.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22That looks lovely. I love the front door.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Beautifully maintained outside as well, that is lovely.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27If you like the Georgian style,

0:10:27 > 0:10:30it is Georgian and you have all those features inside as well.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34- You can see the fan light above the doorway.- That is very nice indeed.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36- Yeah?- Yes, can't wait to go inside.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39- Good! Come on then, let's go!- OK.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42A great start.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45This property is a distinctive Georgian house,

0:10:45 > 0:10:49symmetrical in structure, with rooms either side of a central staircase.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53It was renovated back in 2004 and I think Daryl and Penny

0:10:53 > 0:10:56are going to love the interior.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58So from the hallway straight into this drawing room.

0:10:58 > 0:10:59That is quite spacious.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02It's a nice size, actually, isn't it?

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Yes, and it's got a lovely fire as well. Is it a working fire?

0:11:05 > 0:11:08It is, original Georgian.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11- Can you see it's raised?- Yes. - In those days they had them raised,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14and the Victorians had them actually on the ground.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17I think it's a lovely-sized room.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22It is airy, it's nice having the dual aspect

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- so you get plenty of light in here.- Yes.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27This home has plenty of original features,

0:11:27 > 0:11:29and the period feel continues in a room

0:11:29 > 0:11:32that's likely to play a very important part

0:11:32 > 0:11:36in our couple's future life - the kitchen/diner.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- This is very nice. - This is nice and big, isn't it?

0:11:39 > 0:11:42It's nice and big and it also has nice, high ceilings as well.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46And although it's got beams, they're not intrusive, are they?

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- Not in your face. - They add character, don't they?

0:11:48 > 0:11:50I like the style of the kitchen.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54I think it's very... part of the house,

0:11:54 > 0:11:55it looks like it fits in very well.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59There's certainly an upbeat reaction so far.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02But let's see if we can keep up the momentum with our next room,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05which could be just right for Daryl.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Come through to the second drawing room.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Slightly smaller than the very first one that we saw.

0:12:10 > 0:12:11- Mm.- It's very nice.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15- I notice it's got another fire. Is that working as well?- It is.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Beautiful Georgian fireplace there.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20So this would be my room, really?

0:12:20 > 0:12:22This could be the gaming room. What do you think?

0:12:22 > 0:12:25I could just leave him here and he'd be very happy.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- It's a nice-sized room. - The perfect gaming room. Excellent!

0:12:30 > 0:12:33With a positive response to Daryl's games room,

0:12:33 > 0:12:34it's time to head upstairs,

0:12:34 > 0:12:39which I think offers the great countryside views they wanted.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Come on up.- That is very nice indeed. That looks lovely,

0:12:42 > 0:12:46looking over the rooftops of the other houses in the village as well.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48That's beautiful, that really is gorgeous.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51This property is certainly hitting the mark.

0:12:51 > 0:12:52Now for the master bedroom,

0:12:52 > 0:12:55which is situated next door to the generously-sized family bathroom.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Ah! Isn't this sweet? This is lovely.

0:13:00 > 0:13:01This is a very cute room.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Your room, hopefully.- It's a little bit smaller than I was expecting.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09You're bound to compare with what we've already got

0:13:09 > 0:13:13and this is quite a bit smaller than our current bedroom at home.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15We did make a commitment to actually downsize. We said,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17"Right, we're not going to have such a large house,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19"we're going to get rid of a load of stuff

0:13:19 > 0:13:22"and we're going to live a more simple life."

0:13:22 > 0:13:24- But the truth is...- The reality!

0:13:24 > 0:13:28The reality is we actually like a bit of space, especially in the bedroom.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Although a good size,

0:13:31 > 0:13:35it hasn't quite lived up to their expectations.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37However, there's another double bedroom on this floor,

0:13:37 > 0:13:41which they might find roomier, but then it won't have that great view.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44On the next level there are two more bedrooms which could

0:13:44 > 0:13:47accommodate their children when they come to stay.

0:13:47 > 0:13:48There's also an additional bathroom.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Now we're heading for the garden.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55And while it does have a very useful barn-style outbuilding,

0:13:55 > 0:13:57it may not be as large as they were hoping.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59But I have a plan.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Time for the outside of the property.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09- So this actually is the garden... - Right.- ..for the house.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11Now I know that it's not very big

0:14:11 > 0:14:14and you were keen to grow vegetables and keep bees and all sorts?

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Yes. If at all possible.

0:14:16 > 0:14:20So, I've done a bit of exploring, been investigating

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- and there are allotments to be had very close to the property.- OK.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26So, it's time now for guess the price.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28How much do you think this Georgian house

0:14:28 > 0:14:30is currently on the market for?

0:14:30 > 0:14:35OK, because it's in such a lovely location, close to the moor,

0:14:35 > 0:14:39I'm going to go for £390,000.

0:14:39 > 0:14:40OK. Daryl?

0:14:40 > 0:14:44- I'm going to go for £395,000.- OK.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Current asking price is...

0:14:47 > 0:14:50£425,000.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Oooh. That's...ooh.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56That's way over our budget of what we want to spend, isn't it?

0:14:56 > 0:14:59Yep, however, we have spoken to the owners

0:14:59 > 0:15:02and they are aware of your budget, your top budget of £400,000

0:15:02 > 0:15:04and they are willing to have discussions.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06- They're going to be flexible. - OK.- That's good to know.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Go on, have a look at the house and we'll catch up when you're ready.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- OK, thank you, Nicki.- See you later.

0:15:13 > 0:15:18At a price of £425,000, this house is over their budget

0:15:18 > 0:15:23but a sensible offer could make it achievable for Daryl and Penny.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25All in all, it has...

0:15:34 > 0:15:39The location of this particular property is absolutely perfect.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42I couldn't think of a better location to live in.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46My initial impression of the house was delight.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49This is the sort of house I would love to live in in the future.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51The first house was very interesting.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54The rooms were nice and light and airy.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56The village looks absolutely wonderful

0:15:56 > 0:16:00and I'd be looking forward to doing some fly fishing

0:16:00 > 0:16:03and catching some brown trout on the river.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08- OK, guys. Have you seen enough? - Yes, thank you, Nicki.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12Our first house in North Yorkshire. Look at those smiles!

0:16:12 > 0:16:15- Looks like a very good start. - Yes, it is.- Come on.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27Yorkshire's dramatic rural landscape

0:16:27 > 0:16:31is home to many historic villages and towns.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34Dubbed the gateway to the North Yorkshire moors,

0:16:34 > 0:16:35Pickering is a prime example.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38Its notable landmarks include a 12th century church,

0:16:38 > 0:16:42which houses some of the most beautifully preserved

0:16:42 > 0:16:45medieval wall paintings in the country.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Since being granted its market charter in 1878,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Pickering has become a vibrant hub for local market traders

0:16:51 > 0:16:55and the surrounding countryside is fertile ground for food crops.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58As Penny has a passion to grow her own,

0:16:58 > 0:17:01we've arranged for our buyers to meet Matthew Machin,

0:17:01 > 0:17:03who runs a farm near Stamford Bridge,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06which is championing seasonal and local produce.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Today, we are going to be digging up the parsnips.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12So, what's the straw and the plastic for, Matthew?

0:17:12 > 0:17:17The plastic and the straw is put down to protect them from the frost.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21So the plastic keeps them nice and clean and the straw insulates it.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24- Otherwise it would have rotten parsnips on the top.- OK.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26So that keeps them nice and warm.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29OK, guys. There's a couple of forks there for you.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33This is a row of parsnips which we'll be selling in the shop,

0:17:33 > 0:17:34hopefully today.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38- Then we'll be making some beautiful soup out of them as well.- Ideal.

0:17:38 > 0:17:39Get digging!

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Matthew puts the success of his vegetable crops down

0:17:44 > 0:17:49to the area's fertile, light, sandy soil, which is especially good

0:17:49 > 0:17:52for asparagus and root crops like these parsnips.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55Over recent years, there's been a significant rise

0:17:55 > 0:17:58in the number of local farm shops across the UK,

0:17:58 > 0:18:03and Matthew's produce, like in many others, ends up being sold on site.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05However the story doesn't end there,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08as Matthew's grandmother, Molly, also uses his veg

0:18:08 > 0:18:11to create an array of traditional recipes for their customers.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15And she's going to coach Daryl and Penny

0:18:15 > 0:18:18as they attempt to cook her parsnip, apple and ginger soup.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22- Perhaps if you would like to finish peeling and chopping the onion.- OK.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26- If Daryl could do the parsnips.- OK.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28First the onions are chopped into one-inch pieces,

0:18:28 > 0:18:32then they grate the parsnips and put them all in a bowl.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35The next ingredient is a large Bramley apple,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39peeled, cored and sliced before being added to the veg.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42That's lovely! I'm looking forward to this.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45While Penny peels and presses the garlic,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Daryl takes care of the ginger, finishing off by grating.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Then it's time to start cooking.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57Butter and oil are melted in a pan alongside an onion.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Garlic and ginger are added before Molly's special ingredient,

0:19:00 > 0:19:02a good teaspoon of curry powder.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06You need to put in the rest of the ingredients - that's the apple

0:19:06 > 0:19:09and the chopped parsnips - and the stock.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12- OK, so in goes the stock.- Good.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14So, bring it back to simmering.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Simmering, not boiling.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19And then cook it gently for about an hour with the lid off.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23This has been simmering nicely, now.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28This looks lovely and the smell is absolutely delicious.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32After blending to give the smooth texture - a job for Daryl -

0:19:32 > 0:19:35it's time to taste the soup.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38And there's a little added extra of parsley garnish

0:19:38 > 0:19:40with a smattering of vegetable crisps.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43A lovely, nutritious, healthy soup.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Very fresh because it's all locally grown, the produce.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53And for very little outlay, really. A nice, satisfying meal.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Well, that's definitely been food for thought for our buyers

0:19:57 > 0:20:00as we return to our property hunt.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07We've made the journey 18 miles north-east of York,

0:20:07 > 0:20:10close to the thriving market town of Malton.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Dating back to medieval times,

0:20:13 > 0:20:16it's got all the amenities to help our buyers bond

0:20:16 > 0:20:22with their new community, including a post office, shops and some pubs.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25It also offers a historic local walk, the Malton Trail.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29Our second house is just a few miles south-east,

0:20:29 > 0:20:31in the village of Duggleby.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33It's surrounded by stunning countryside

0:20:33 > 0:20:36and has views of the Yorkshire Wolds.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Here is your second property.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42- That looks very nice.- Yeah, it does.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- That looks really lovely. - It's quite imposing, isn't it?- Yes.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47- And it looks familiar.- Does it?!

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- Yeah.- Yes.- Oh, tell me why.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53- You haven't been inside, have you? - No, we've not been inside.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57I think when we were doing research online a little while ago,

0:20:57 > 0:21:00I'm pretty sure we saw this house.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03The bit I can remember is it has a lovely kitchen-diner,

0:21:03 > 0:21:06which is on our wish list.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09So I'm delighted that you brought us here.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Well, the pressure is on.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14I hope Daryl and Penny's expectations will be fulfilled

0:21:14 > 0:21:17when we step through the front door.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19- So, come on in.- Thank you.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's certainly warmer in here.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24It was a bit chilly outside. Yes, well this is lovely, isn't it?

0:21:24 > 0:21:28- A roomy entrance.- Yeah.- Yes.- You've got a downstairs cloakroom there.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32- And through here is the kitchen.- OK.

0:21:34 > 0:21:35It's lovely.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39- Is it all coming back to you?- It is. It's the fact that it flows through.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41I love the wood of the units, I love the wood floor.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43So a really good-sized kitchen.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47- You've got the dining area there and beyond that, the boys' room.- No!

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Daryl, it's off-limits, then! Penny has spoken.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57With a dispute brewing over rights to the next room, I think

0:21:57 > 0:22:01we're about to find out who really wears the trousers in this relationship.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03- This is nice. - This is great, isn't it?

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Sorry, Daryl.- Really sociable.

0:22:05 > 0:22:06This is lovely.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09That looks like patio doors leading out onto the garden.

0:22:09 > 0:22:10Certainly does.

0:22:10 > 0:22:15So, I could be sitting here with the doors open, nice chair,

0:22:15 > 0:22:18sitting reading, sunning.

0:22:18 > 0:22:19Nice, very nice little room.

0:22:19 > 0:22:23I don't think it's suitable for a boys' room. No.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25So, Penny claims this space,

0:22:25 > 0:22:29but Daryl might be able to take ownership of the drawing room.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Or they could just spend some cosy evenings there together.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35But the next room is the one that might really set

0:22:35 > 0:22:36the cat amongst the pigeons.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Could Penny have her eyes on this one, too?

0:22:39 > 0:22:43- Oh!- So, conservatory, garden room...

0:22:43 > 0:22:45- Yeah.- Sun room.- Yes.

0:22:45 > 0:22:46This is lovely again.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49It's a nice square room, wooden floors, which is lovely.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- Yes. What do you think? - I think it's brilliant.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57It's a brilliant size, it is a sun room, it's a conservatory.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01It's somewhere where we can just sit and relax.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03I've just suddenly thought, if there's the room

0:23:03 > 0:23:08over the other side, which I've already said I'd like...

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Well, this must be my room, then.

0:23:10 > 0:23:11No, you can't have this one.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14Would you like an answer to that problem?

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- Yes.- Just behind us there's a door. There's a study in there.- Really?

0:23:17 > 0:23:22- A study, but big enough to be a gaming room.- Ideal.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25I think I might be a bit selfish, really, having two rooms.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28- Well, this is a gorgeous room.- Yes.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Upstairs, with a total of four bedrooms,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33this definitely doesn't count as downsizing.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36There are two double bedrooms that might suit their children

0:23:36 > 0:23:39when they come to stay.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42While this single could be used as a dressing room for Penny.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46And there's also a bright and spacious family bathroom.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48But we're heading for the main bedroom.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53- So let's bring you straight through into the master bedroom.- OK.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56And it also has the ensuite next door.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58OK. We'll have a look at that.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01It's a nice size, actually. It's an OK size.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05It's a little bit smaller than our current bedroom at home,

0:24:05 > 0:24:09but we've got the wardrobes down here and...yeah.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12- Yeah, it's a nice bedroom. - Good.- Yes.

0:24:12 > 0:24:16With four bedrooms, that single has either got

0:24:16 > 0:24:18your name on it - gaming room.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Or, I'd be inclined, actually, to use it as a dressing room

0:24:21 > 0:24:24and just have this as a fabulous bedroom

0:24:24 > 0:24:28and then, just along the hallway, your dressing room boudoir.

0:24:28 > 0:24:29Actually, I agree.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32The thing was, when we decided that we were going to move,

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Daryl promised me my own dressing room.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37- Ah!- You're quite right.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Maybe this is my opportunity to give you your own dressing room.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Thank you very much.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45You feel the girls are ganging up on you here, Daryl?

0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Are we being unfair or not? - I feel under pressure, yes.

0:24:48 > 0:24:53So, it's an excellent result inside, especially for Penny.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57But now for the great outdoors, and these grounds

0:24:57 > 0:25:01are a really good size, offering a lawn, numerous shrubs, a sociable patio

0:25:01 > 0:25:06and enough space to grow those all important vegetables.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10So, this garden, there is room, actually, on the side,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13to have a vegetable patch. They do have one in the corner.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15But you could take that all out if you wanted to

0:25:15 > 0:25:17and have that all as vegetables.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20I think that's probably just about the right size, actually.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- There's one negative thing about it. - Go on.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27It overlooks another house on that side.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31- Well, let's see what you think of the price.- Oh, yes, the price.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34The price. Come on, who's going to go first?

0:25:34 > 0:25:36- You go first.- I think it's my turn. - Yeah.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38- 380?- OK.

0:25:38 > 0:25:44I was going to go for about that. I think I'll go for 390.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47- You're both over...- Oh, right! - ..the current asking price.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50- Are we?- Yes.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52- Oh, right.- By quite a bit.- Really?

0:25:52 > 0:25:55- £345,000.- Really?- Yeah.

0:25:55 > 0:25:56- Oh!- Wow.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01- Oh.- The owners are very keen to sell.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Have another look at the house, garden, that beautiful garden room.

0:26:04 > 0:26:09- Yes.- And come and find me when you're ready.- OK, thank you.

0:26:09 > 0:26:14Off you go! Enjoy your personal tour.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16They really, really like this house.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19And I think that having neighbours not that close,

0:26:19 > 0:26:22that's the compromise. And I think it's worth it.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27Well under their budget at £345,000,

0:26:27 > 0:26:31this house meets many of their requirements, and more.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34It has a huge sociable kitchen/diner...

0:26:49 > 0:26:52House two was very interesting, actually.

0:26:52 > 0:26:57Really liked it, it had two extra rooms downstairs

0:26:57 > 0:27:02and of course Penny and I will be arguing over who has

0:27:02 > 0:27:04the extra room - the snug, or the sun room.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06This is the one that I saw on the internet

0:27:06 > 0:27:09and I really did want to come and have a look at this house.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11I'm so pleased we have.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13It's lived up to more than my hopes,

0:27:13 > 0:27:18but, and I'm afraid it is a small "but", there is a house opposite,

0:27:18 > 0:27:21and it overlooks our back garden.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26- Have you seen enough, you two? - Yes, thank you very much, Nicki.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Has North Yorkshire done us proud?

0:27:28 > 0:27:29- I think it has.- Yeah?- Yes.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31- Today it has.- It has.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35And hopefully, next time we look at a house, the sun might even shine.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37You never know.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50As the evening falls over the hills and moors in North Yorkshire,

0:27:50 > 0:27:53it marks the end of the first day's property search.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03Early retirees Daryl and Penny

0:28:03 > 0:28:05are seeking a move from the city of Plymouth

0:28:05 > 0:28:10to North Yorkshire, to begin the next chapter of their lives.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14So far, they've been dazzled by the period detail in one property,

0:28:14 > 0:28:16while remaining bewitched by the huge amount of space

0:28:16 > 0:28:19on offer in another.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23But coming up, our mystery house proves hard to beat

0:28:23 > 0:28:25when it comes to spectacular scenery.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28When you're having a view like this, you can actually watch

0:28:28 > 0:28:29the seasons change.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32And I saddle up for the oldest flat race in England.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39I think we may have found Penny and Daryl's North Yorkshire dream.

0:28:39 > 0:28:43Unfortunately, it was the first location we showed them,

0:28:43 > 0:28:46but the second property that they really liked.

0:28:46 > 0:28:50As far as downsizing's concerned, well, they've forgotten that bit.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53So, today it's time to show them our mystery house.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57Now, both of them have said they want views on their doorstep.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00The big question is, are they prepared to climb more than

0:29:00 > 0:29:03three steps to get to their little bit of heaven?

0:29:08 > 0:29:11How important is location for you two?

0:29:11 > 0:29:15The countryside around the Yorkshire moors is absolutely beautiful.

0:29:15 > 0:29:17It's stunning, in actual fact.

0:29:17 > 0:29:21So having an open view at the back of our house would be lovely.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23So, your ideal is literally open the door

0:29:23 > 0:29:25and it's all there in front of you.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27- Yes, please.- That's the dream.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30- Yes, but whether we can afford it or not is another matter.- Yes.

0:29:35 > 0:29:38For our mystery property,

0:29:38 > 0:29:40we're travelling 90 miles north of York to the lively

0:29:40 > 0:29:42village of Oswaldkirk,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44just on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48The village was once an Anglo Saxon settlement,

0:29:48 > 0:29:51and is named after its church, St Oswald.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55- This is our third and final house, our mystery property.- Yes.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59So you said you wanted views on your doorstep. Used to hills?

0:29:59 > 0:30:01Yes, Devon is full of hills, so used to going up hills.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04- Yes, well, that's good. - And down them, obviously.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07I'm glad you're prepared, because I'm about to reveal the mystery...

0:30:07 > 0:30:10right up there.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12- Wow.- Wow! THEY LAUGH

0:30:12 > 0:30:14Your mystery lodge.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17You have to be fit to get to this house.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20Set halfway up the Oswaldkirk bank, there are 39 steps.

0:30:20 > 0:30:24But I think Daryl and Penny will feel it's definitely

0:30:24 > 0:30:26worth the effort when they reach the summit.

0:30:26 > 0:30:31- That is amazing.- That is an amazing view. It's beautiful.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34It's quite high up, isn't it? It's just as well I like heights.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37It's really high up, yeah. But you two wanted a view, didn't you?

0:30:37 > 0:30:40- You delivered. - so, you've seen the vista.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43Let's see if the mystery house can work its magic inside.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50Off the spacious entrance area is the first room,

0:30:50 > 0:30:53which looks very cosy indeed.

0:30:53 > 0:30:56So, here's your reception room, or your drawing room.

0:30:56 > 0:31:01And a lovely roaring fire, and quite a modern fireplace, actually. 1999.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Yes, you've noticed. With the Yorkshire rose.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06And the house was extended in 1999.

0:31:06 > 0:31:10It was actually built around 1922, and they've extended it.

0:31:10 > 0:31:11And this was put in then.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14It's Yorkshire stone, so even in the winter months,

0:31:14 > 0:31:17with a roaring fire, you can still appreciate that view.

0:31:17 > 0:31:21- The aspect is something else, isn't it?- It's beautiful.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23I think, when you're having a view like this,

0:31:23 > 0:31:25you can actually watch the seasons change.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29- Very, very nice.- Good.

0:31:29 > 0:31:32This unique property has definitely captured Penny's imagination.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36And I'm hoping they'll both feel at home in the kitchen.

0:31:36 > 0:31:37So, the kitchen/diner.

0:31:37 > 0:31:42- You've got oak cabinets here, granite work surfaces.- Yes.

0:31:42 > 0:31:47Belfast sink. And then, you've got your dining area here.

0:31:47 > 0:31:51This is, I think, the sort of size we should be looking at, in all honesty.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54- We've readjusted, slightly. We've tweaked.- Yes.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57I do have one slight concern.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00- I do notice there is a back wall.- Yes.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03Which is inevitable for a house of this style.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05- Because you're on the side of a hill.- Yes.- Yes.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09You don't have acres of garden behind you, that's true.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11But you can't have everything, can you?

0:32:11 > 0:32:13You've got the most amazing view out the front,

0:32:13 > 0:32:16so unless you're a lighthouse...

0:32:16 > 0:32:18I couldn't have put it better myself. I couldn't.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22Well, let's have a look at that view again, through another room.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25And that next room, with its sunny aspect, could be

0:32:25 > 0:32:27just the thing to melt both our buyers' hearts.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29So, you've got another sitting room here,

0:32:29 > 0:32:32which is actually being used as an office.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35You can shut it off in the winter, then, when it gets a bit cold,

0:32:35 > 0:32:37because it's got one of those conservatory windows.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- Yes, it's like a sun room, isn't it?- It is.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42I mean, in summer I can imagine those doors

0:32:42 > 0:32:44are left open the whole time.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47We've got a utility room behind me, with a shower, as well.

0:32:47 > 0:32:48And it's got access to the back.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52You've got to think about the dimensions, the space,

0:32:52 > 0:32:55but with your own furniture it's going to look very different.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57Nicki, I'll have to pull you up on that.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02- Daryl has promised that I can have all new furniture!- Oh, really!

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Well, there we go, then. Classy.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09- Right, let's look at the bedrooms next.- Right, OK.

0:33:09 > 0:33:10So, there's even more promises for Penny,

0:33:10 > 0:33:14and there's another treat to come in the extension.

0:33:16 > 0:33:21- So, here's the master bedroom. - Oh, wow, Nicki, this is lovely!

0:33:22 > 0:33:26- It's surprisingly large. - It's massive, isn't it?- It is.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29I wasn't expecting a bedroom to be on this floor, actually.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31I thought it would be up in the eaves.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34And the windows out onto that view.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37- Your eyes are drawn to that view all the time.- Yeah.

0:33:37 > 0:33:38And we're used to saying,

0:33:38 > 0:33:41"This bedroom's a bit small, not as big as our current bedroom."

0:33:41 > 0:33:44- But this is a lot bigger.- It's good.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46This is a really lovely master bedroom.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49Top marks, I think.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52This fantastic bedroom suite also has a walk-in wardrobe

0:33:52 > 0:33:57and a very generous ensuite bathroom with a free-standing bath.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59The other two bedrooms are up in the eaves

0:33:59 > 0:34:03and provide a useable space for guests or, indeed, Daryl's gaming.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05But now it's time to view the garden,

0:34:05 > 0:34:10which could prove more of a challenge due to its steep nature.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13But then again, it does have that rather special view.

0:34:13 > 0:34:17So, this is your garden space. Goes right up to the border at the back.

0:34:17 > 0:34:21- You can see where the shrubs are. So that's all your land.- Oh, right.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24Which, again, if you wanted to have your vegetables,

0:34:24 > 0:34:26have a little plot, you could actually have boxes

0:34:26 > 0:34:27all the way up, like steps.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30Next door are quite keen, actually,

0:34:30 > 0:34:32if you wanted to buy a little more land,

0:34:32 > 0:34:34they'd be willing to negotiate.

0:34:34 > 0:34:38OK, crunch time. How much is this house on the market for?

0:34:38 > 0:34:39What's it worth?

0:34:39 > 0:34:43I'm going to guess at £410,000.

0:34:43 > 0:34:44Penny.

0:34:44 > 0:34:49I was actually going to go a lot lower, actually, at £380,000.

0:34:49 > 0:34:53- Well, you're both out.- Oh, right. - You're not even close.- OK!

0:34:53 > 0:34:57- That doesn't surprise me! - But in a good way.- OK.

0:34:57 > 0:35:03- £345,000 is the asking price.- Right. - So way below your budget.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06That would give you £55,000 to play with.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10So we could actually build a little tram or something.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13Yes, a little lift!

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Well, with that price in mind - because it does change

0:35:15 > 0:35:18the outlook a little bit - why don't you have another wander around,

0:35:18 > 0:35:21and I'll catch up with you when you've seen enough?

0:35:21 > 0:35:23- Thank you.- OK, thanks.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29This house more than delivers on the view

0:35:29 > 0:35:34and is well below their budget at £345,000.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37So, they can certainly afford all that new furniture.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52The actual house itself is very nice indeed.

0:35:52 > 0:35:58Downstairs living accommodation is the size we should really be

0:35:58 > 0:36:01looking for, so I think I was pleasantly surprised by that.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05My favourite room in the house would have to be the master bedroom,

0:36:05 > 0:36:10because it was completely unexpected, it was massive.

0:36:10 > 0:36:15I just thought, "What a brilliant room to wake up in each morning."

0:36:15 > 0:36:18OK, that's it.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21You've seen all three houses here in North Yorkshire.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23Yes, you've certainly given us something to think about, Nicki.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26- In a good way, I hope. - Yes, definitely.- Definitely.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38Within North Yorkshire's vast and varied landscape are

0:36:38 > 0:36:42some age-old traditions that are still going strong many centuries later.

0:36:42 > 0:36:46For nearly 500 years, the town of Market Weighton

0:36:46 > 0:36:49in the Yorkshire Wolds has played host

0:36:49 > 0:36:50to the annual Kiplingcotes Derby,

0:36:50 > 0:36:54reputedly the oldest horse race in Britain.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56And, as a keen rider myself,

0:36:56 > 0:37:00I couldn't miss the opportunity to see history in action.

0:37:00 > 0:37:05So, on a very foggy day, competitor Emma Herbert-Davies,

0:37:05 > 0:37:08who came second in last year's race, offered to give me the inside track.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11So Emma, I was going to ask you what's it like riding

0:37:11 > 0:37:14in this beautiful scenery, but we can't see anything today.

0:37:14 > 0:37:17No, we've got the wrong day for it. I'm hoping it clears.

0:37:17 > 0:37:21I only need to see about 100 yards ahead, anyway.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23As long as I can see the finishing post, I'll be fine.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26- And the race will continue? - Oh, absolutely.

0:37:26 > 0:37:27Even in deep snow drifts.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31They've walked Shire horses down this course to keep it open,

0:37:31 > 0:37:33because if you miss a year, you lose the charter

0:37:33 > 0:37:34and the right to hold this.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38It's been done since 1519, was the very first time they ran it.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42And I came in to do it just because of the history of it.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45And I thought, "I have to take part in this race,

0:37:45 > 0:37:48"ride a piece of history and with a bit of luck, win."

0:37:48 > 0:37:51Oh, we're gunning for you. Fingers crossed.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53So, we better get you over there, weighed in and registered.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55And let the race begin.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57- And best of luck to Blue and you. - Thank you.

0:37:59 > 0:38:03In 1519, horse racing was as popular then as it is today.

0:38:03 > 0:38:08And the Kiplingcotes Derby, held on the third Thursday in March,

0:38:08 > 0:38:10was always the first race of the year.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14Over four miles of rough terrain, it offered the landed gentry

0:38:14 > 0:38:17the chance to see how their horses had wintered.

0:38:17 > 0:38:22Nowadays, it's open to everyone, but it's by no means a free-for-all.

0:38:22 > 0:38:24A strict set of laws has always ruled proceedings,

0:38:24 > 0:38:29and these have been passed on from generation to generation.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32"Every rider that layeth hold of any of the other riders,

0:38:32 > 0:38:34"or striketh any of them, shall win no prize."

0:38:35 > 0:38:39Riders must weigh exactly ten stone and, if you're not heavy enough,

0:38:39 > 0:38:42it's time to start filling your pockets with potatoes.

0:38:44 > 0:38:46It used to cost four gold coins to enter into

0:38:46 > 0:38:50the Kiplingcotes Derby, England's oldest horse race.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52Today, it costs £4.25.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56Now, the winner gets £50, plus this beautiful trophy.

0:38:56 > 0:38:59So, without further ado, on the wave of a white hanky,

0:38:59 > 0:39:01they're off.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08The race is run over fields, lanes and tracks

0:39:08 > 0:39:12and starts at a stone post not far from the old Kiplingcotes railway station

0:39:12 > 0:39:14and finishes at Londesborough Wold Farm.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20We're on the finishing line. Here comes the first rider.

0:39:20 > 0:39:22Number 20.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24And it wasn't our Emma.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27This year's winner is John Thirsk, riding his horse, Bob.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31And it's the fourth time he's won the race in the past five years.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33Here comes another one.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41It's Emma! Well done! It's Emma.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50So, John, congratulations on winning this year's Derby...

0:39:50 > 0:39:53- Thank you very much.- ..and for keeping the tradition alive.

0:39:53 > 0:39:56- Thank you very much indeed. - Well done.

0:40:03 > 0:40:07- Emma, well done.- Oh, thank you! - What an exhilarating ride!

0:40:07 > 0:40:11That was one of the best races I've ever done. I loved every minute.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13It was just full-pelt the whole way.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16And did Blue do you proud?

0:40:16 > 0:40:17He did do me proud, yeah.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21And we'll come back next year and I will get that trophy at some point.

0:40:22 > 0:40:27So Emma is runner-up once again. But the trophy this year goes to John.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30Well, we've already seen all the runners and riders

0:40:30 > 0:40:31in our property search.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33Time to find out if any of them

0:40:33 > 0:40:38have nudged past the finishing post for our buyers, Daryl and Penny.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41Ah, thank you, a nice cup of tea.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43Think we deserve this after our tour.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47So, let's start off with the first property that we saw.

0:40:47 > 0:40:49In a beautiful, beautiful village.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52Yes, Nunnington. It was lovely.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55That is the sort of village I'd like to live in, definitely.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58But what about the Georgian property that we showed you?

0:40:58 > 0:41:00I liked the style of the house.

0:41:00 > 0:41:05Grade II listed is slightly worrying, but lovely inside.

0:41:05 > 0:41:07The interior was beautiful.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09From a downside point of view,

0:41:09 > 0:41:12the outside space really didn't do it for me.

0:41:12 > 0:41:16So our second property was in Duggleby. It was a new-build.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18I absolutely loved the look of that property.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20It was perfect, from my point of view.

0:41:20 > 0:41:24After you mentioned to us there are four bedrooms,

0:41:24 > 0:41:25I suddenly thought,

0:41:25 > 0:41:27"What are we going to do with all these four bedrooms?

0:41:27 > 0:41:30"This is ridiculous." It is just the two of us now.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32What about the location, because that was very

0:41:32 > 0:41:35different from the first village that we showed you.

0:41:35 > 0:41:39It was. I think what disappointed us was the lack of local amenities.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41Right. Where you are at the moment,

0:41:41 > 0:41:44you're used to having all those amenities on your doorstep.

0:41:44 > 0:41:45- Yes.- Yes.

0:41:45 > 0:41:48It's a very different thing when you step out into the true countryside.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50It is.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52It's not that we don't want to move to the countryside,

0:41:52 > 0:41:55but we will do a lot more research about the areas.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Well, talking of locations, we took you to probably the most

0:41:58 > 0:42:01prime location you're ever going to see, in Oswaldkirk.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Yes.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05The mystery house, it definitely had

0:42:05 > 0:42:07that wow factor, when I first saw it.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10It was absolutely beautiful, stunning views,

0:42:10 > 0:42:17- 180 degree views and it was absolutely amazing to look at it.- Yeah.

0:42:17 > 0:42:21Looking at the layout and how it was presented, it actually made me

0:42:21 > 0:42:24think that, "Yes, we should be going down the direction of smaller rooms.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26"A smaller house."

0:42:26 > 0:42:29So, in a way, the mystery house has helped you refine what you need.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33Did any of our houses come close?

0:42:33 > 0:42:36I'm sort of guessing perhaps not, but I want to hear it from you.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38Perhaps not.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40I think what you have done, is that you've shown us

0:42:40 > 0:42:44everything that we wanted, and perhaps everything

0:42:44 > 0:42:47that we needed as well, but not in one house.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50Across the three houses, you've definitely achieved that.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53You've shown us what we want, and thank you very much for doing that.

0:42:53 > 0:42:54Well, you are very welcome.

0:42:54 > 0:42:56And we know you're going to move up shortly...

0:42:56 > 0:42:59- Hopefully, fingers crossed.- ..so all the best.- Thank you.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05Although we didn't manage to find Daryl and Penny

0:43:05 > 0:43:10their ideal property, what we did do was help them re-evaluate

0:43:10 > 0:43:14what they want and what they actually need from their new home.

0:43:14 > 0:43:17I'm pretty certain they're going to be moving to North Yorkshire

0:43:17 > 0:43:19very soon.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21Until next time.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23If you'd like to escape to the country

0:43:23 > 0:43:27in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or England and need our help,
