0:00:02 > 0:00:05This mighty fortress was originally built on orders of King Henry VIII

0:00:05 > 0:00:10to defend this stretch of coastline against attack from foreign invaders. But where is it?

0:00:10 > 0:00:13And which county am I in? Keep watching.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47On today's show I'm helping a young professional couple from London

0:00:47 > 0:00:49who are looking for a country home.

0:00:49 > 0:00:54Along the way they find the peace and quiet at one house astonishing.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57The silence is deafening!

0:00:57 > 0:01:01And a property fantasy is fulfilled at our mystery house.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04- Goodness, this is a dream.- Da-dah!

0:01:08 > 0:01:12Today I'm in Hampshire. This is Hurst Castle,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14which looks out across the Solent.

0:01:14 > 0:01:20Built in the 1540s, King Henry VIII certainly picked a commanding spot for it,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22right at the end of this shingle spit,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25and just three-quarters of a mile from the Isle of Wight.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28It has a colourful history.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33Charles I was imprisoned here in 1648, before his execution.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38And during the Second World War, it was used as a garrison to defend our coastline.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41However, conflict, kings and castles

0:01:41 > 0:01:45are just some of the heritage highlights this county is home to.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49Hampshire lies on the south coast of England and is bordered

0:01:49 > 0:01:53by five other counties, including Wiltshire and Dorset to the west.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56Its many attractions include two national parks,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59which cover some 45% of the county,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02and include the chalk ridges of the South Downs

0:02:02 > 0:02:05and the wooded pastureland of the New Forest,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07which encompasses the port of Lymington.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Now a major yachting centre, Lymington was known

0:02:10 > 0:02:15for the production of salt from Roman times to the 19th century,

0:02:15 > 0:02:18when shipbuilding became the main industry.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21The county boasts many impressive historic buildings,

0:02:21 > 0:02:26such as the ruins of this Cistercian abbey in the village of Beaulieu.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Founded in 1203 by King John, it was once dubbed in Latin,

0:02:30 > 0:02:34"Bellus locus regus", meaning the beautiful place of the king.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39Today, visitors can marvel not only at the architecture,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42but also learn about Britain's four-wheeled heritage

0:02:42 > 0:02:48at the National Motor Museum, which stands alongside it on the 9,000-acre Beaulieu estate.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53The average price for a detached property in Hampshire

0:02:53 > 0:03:00comes in at £346,000. That's some 90,000 above the national figure.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04Now this is mainly due to the high demand of living in the New Forest,

0:03:04 > 0:03:08that can command a £100,000 premium.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11However, you'll get better value for money if you head east towards

0:03:11 > 0:03:15the likes of Farnborough, which offers good rail links to London.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19You can also find more affordable housing around the market town

0:03:19 > 0:03:23of Andover in the west and Romsey in the south.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26But wherever you're looking, you'll find this county

0:03:26 > 0:03:29has a great range of different property styles.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33And today we're taking a look at some thatched houses,

0:03:33 > 0:03:36starting with this three-bedroom brick and stone cottage

0:03:36 > 0:03:39in the heart of the village of Selborne.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Dating back to the 17th century and Grade II listed,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45its features include exposed brickwork in the kitchen

0:03:45 > 0:03:48and an inglenook fireplace in the sitting room.

0:03:48 > 0:03:53It's on the market for £550,000.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57For around the same price, you could opt for a part-thatched cottage.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00This four-bedroom property in Petersfield

0:04:00 > 0:04:04comes with leaded windows and exposed timbers in the open-plan reception room.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09The stunning kitchen is a mixture of the modern and traditional.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13But if your pockets aren't so deep, maybe you'd prefer this charming

0:04:13 > 0:04:16two-bedroom cottage in the village of Rownhams.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21Priced at £175,000, it dates back to the early 18th century

0:04:21 > 0:04:24and has a wooded beam mantel over the fireplace.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28Great Hampshire homes there.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31But will any of them win the hearts of today's house-hunters?

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Let's find out.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Andy and Frances have lived in their two-bedroom Victorian maisonette

0:04:37 > 0:04:41in the London suburb of Barnes for the past three years.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43They've enjoyed renovating it.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45But since they got married six months ago,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49they've decided it's too small for the next stage of their lives.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52To have the house that we really want,

0:04:52 > 0:04:54the house that we want to spend, I suppose,

0:04:54 > 0:04:59the rest of our lives in, we really want to move to achieve that.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02- I don't think we can get that in Barnes, as lovely as it is.- No.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05No, it's a bit expensive in Barnes to get the space we want.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09One of the reasons for the move would be looking to start a family.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13So, you know, more space. Looking at a local school would be good.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16So that'll be a focal point.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20As both financial accountant Andy and Frances, an events manager,

0:05:20 > 0:05:24will continue to work in London around three days a week,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27they're looking to live no more than an hour away from the capital.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32And they've settled on Hampshire for another more personal reason too.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36I grew up in Hampshire. I still have a lot of family there.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40My uncle lives in Winchester. My mum lives in Southampton.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45And my sister, her husband and my niece live in the neighbouring county of Dorset.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48So it would be great to be able to spend more time with them,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51and to see them more often.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54As well are spending more time with the family, they're planning

0:05:54 > 0:05:58on what might be the best way to make friends in a new community.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03It would be great to live in a village where the focal point of the community was the local pub.

0:06:03 > 0:06:09- Yeah, that would work. - And there are lots of festivals around food that go on.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Andy and Frances are both self-confessed foodies.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14So it's no surprise that they want the kitchen

0:06:14 > 0:06:16to be the heart of their new home.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20But they also have pastimes they'd like to pursue outdoors.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25I love cooking, that's my passion. Baking in particular.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28It would just be really nice to have a larger kitchen.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30- Yeah, definitely. Will you be able to fit me in as well?- Yeah.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34And horseriding - I grew up riding a lot.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39Moving to the country would hopefully enable me to do more of that.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43Yeah. If there was a garden big enough that I could put in

0:06:43 > 0:06:46maybe a pitching area with a putting green on it,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48that would be absolutely ideal.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52So, with their finances in place, accountant Andy knows exactly

0:06:52 > 0:06:54how much they have to spend.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56The budget for the move is £600,000.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07As they have family in Winchester and Southampton,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10as well as in Dorset, we've pretty much got a free rein

0:07:10 > 0:07:15throughout the county to find Frances and Andy their new home,

0:07:15 > 0:07:20as long as it's within an hour of London for when they need to drive back from work.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22We're meeting in Hampshire, so they can tell me more

0:07:22 > 0:07:25about the vision they have of their future country home.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Well, Andy and Frances, welcome to Hampshire. I mean, it's beautiful.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Just look at that view. If you weren't decided,

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- looking at that would change your mind, wouldn't it?- Indeed.- Gorgeous.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Have you got a clear idea exactly what you're after?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Come on, remind us of your wish list.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43So, the key, I suppose, is the period property, isn't it, for both of us.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47Ideally we'd like four bedrooms with some sort of workspace

0:07:47 > 0:07:52so we can obviously work from a home office. We'd like a big kitchen.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- We'd like the kitchen to be the focal point of the house.- Right.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- Almost certainly.- OK. - Enough space to entertain guests.

0:07:59 > 0:08:04- A good outside space. I'm not asking for much!- Yeah, right!

0:08:04 > 0:08:07- Cos Hampshire's not the cheapest of counties, is it?- No.

0:08:07 > 0:08:12And with this house, with this move, it doesn't have to be perfect straightaway, does it?

0:08:12 > 0:08:15- No. It's a long-term move. - I like that.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Yes, cos you say it's like a 20 to 30 year house, isn't it,

0:08:18 > 0:08:21that you can imagine living in. Right. Well we've got three houses

0:08:21 > 0:08:24lined up to show you. One is our mystery house.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27That's going to get the grey matter working overtime.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29- So, shall we get cracking? - Lovely. Come on, then.- Absolutely.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35With their maximum budget of £600,000,

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Frances and Andy are looking for a character property,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41preferably detached and with a large kitchen and utility room.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45They'd like at least four bedrooms, a study to work from home

0:08:45 > 0:08:49and a large enough garden for Andy to play pitch and putt on.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53We found three beautiful properties which we think

0:08:53 > 0:08:58will really impress our buyers. At each one I'll be asking them to guess the price tag.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Last on the tour will be our mystery house,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04which we hope will make them true converts to country life.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08We're starting off with house number one.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15It's going to be a bit of a change in lifestyle for you both.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18You've got the commute to London, but the times that you can

0:09:18 > 0:09:21actually be here in Hampshire on the weekends,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24is hopefully going to give you more time for your hobbies.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Yeah, absolutely. And it's, I suppose,

0:09:27 > 0:09:30about having a better quality of life as well.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32And it just suits, as you say,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- the things that we enjoy doing most at the weekend.- Indeed.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Even though we've got Richmond Park fairly close to us,

0:09:38 > 0:09:43- we find we don't use that. Whereas here it's on your doorstep.- Yeah.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50We've made the journey around 11 miles west of Winchester

0:09:50 > 0:09:52close to the village of Kings Somborne,

0:09:52 > 0:09:57a trip of around 16 miles to the M3 for the drive back to London.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01Set in Hampshire's beautiful Test Valley,

0:10:01 > 0:10:03amenities include a church at the heart of the village.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06A thatched traditional pub which serves food,

0:10:06 > 0:10:11and one of the nearest convenience stores and post offices to our first property.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15Situated almost five miles away on the edge of Michelmersh,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18it's a period cottage that dates back to the early 1700s.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27So here we have it - this is our first property here in Hampshire.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30- Fantastic. It looks lovely. - Yeah, it's beautiful.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34- Beautiful sort of quintessential English countryside.- It is. - Very beautiful.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37It's very pretty and I love the fact that there is a nice driveway

0:10:37 > 0:10:40and front garden. So, it looks really attractive from the outside.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44- Good. Right, shall we get cracking? - Absolutely.- Come on, follow me.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50The location and traditional exterior are holding their interest.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53I think we can make it a hat-trick of successes,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56as inside, this property provides the period charm

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Frances and Andy are looking for.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- So here we go, first tour of the house.- Lovely.

0:11:02 > 0:11:07- Starting with the drawing-room. - Lots of character.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- Yeah, lots of character. Fantastic fireplace.- Very cosy, isn't it?

0:11:10 > 0:11:16Very cosy. Quite low ceilings. Which is OK for me, being fairly short!

0:11:16 > 0:11:20That's not a problem. Eh, yeah, very nice. Very cute.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24You probably notice, especially as you currently live in London...

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- ..no traffic.- Very quiet. Remarkably so. Yeah.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- It does make a difference, doesn't it?- It does, yeah.

0:11:31 > 0:11:36- I'm sure if you live in the country you just take that peace and quiet for granted.- Yeah, exactly.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Yeah, it is actually really noticeable now.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41The silence is deafening!

0:11:41 > 0:11:45- Welcoming, isn't it? - Yeah, it's very cosy. Very...

0:11:45 > 0:11:48You feel almost immediately at home, don't you? Yeah, very nice.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Wonderful. Right, well, we'll keep going.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56- Now I think this... - Oh, this is lovely.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- It's delightful, isn't it?- Yeah. - Absolutely delightful.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- Very bright.- It's lovely.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07- Just imagine sitting in there in the summer, enjoying the garden.- Yeah.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Very nice. It's quite a big space, as well.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12It is, and it brings the outside in.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15But there are lots of rooms with this property.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16Just behind us, there's a door.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- Through there, there's a huge utility room.- Wow, great.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- Utility room.- And you've got a boot room with access outside.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25- Oh, lovely.- Superb. - Yeah, with a cloakroom.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Let's continue through, because this

0:12:28 > 0:12:31- is the kitchen I want to show you. - Fantastic.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35- Important for a baker... - Wow, lovely.

0:12:35 > 0:12:36..that you feel happy.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40- That's a lovely space. Very nice. - Very welcoming.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43You'd get lots of people round that table with this...

0:12:43 > 0:12:46- Is that a church pew?- It is indeed. - It's lovely.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49So, as you can see, over the years, probably over the last 30 years

0:12:49 > 0:12:53or so, the house has been extended once and then extended again.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57So, from the front, did you think it was this big?

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- Probably not, no. - Hard to tell, but no.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02Super, right, we'll continue.

0:13:02 > 0:13:07'So, this house has prompted some positive reactions so far.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10'And they should be equally pleased with the upstairs,

0:13:10 > 0:13:12'which will more than meet their demands.'

0:13:17 > 0:13:21- So, we've got four bedrooms in total.- Fantastic.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24- This is the master.- Lovely.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- It's a good size.- Bright. - With your en suite.

0:13:26 > 0:13:31- Oh, yeah.- Oh, lovely, yeah, that's a good size, isn't it?- A good size.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33So we have managed to find you four bedrooms, which is

0:13:33 > 0:13:35always a good start, isn't it?

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- Four decent sizes, as well. - Absolutely.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Notice that quirky study through one of the bedrooms?

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Yeah, absolutely, that could be a good working space for us.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48A great start with this first house. It's got you thinking.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50- So we're going to head outside. - Lovely.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Look at the garden, look at the location.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55We're going to talk money, as well, I'm afraid.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58How much it's on the market for. Let's go back downstairs.

0:13:58 > 0:13:59Thank you, Nicki.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03'I'm glad they've been impressed by the inside and outside gives them

0:14:03 > 0:14:06'the generous garden they were looking for,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09'so Andy can practise his golfing skills.'

0:14:13 > 0:14:14This is lovely.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16I love showing people houses,

0:14:16 > 0:14:20but I really love showing people, sometimes, the garden.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23This is fantastic. Look, chickens and ducks!

0:14:23 > 0:14:27- Fantastic.- It's about a third of an acre.- OK.- A good size.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31But how much is this dream going to be? What's it going to cost you?

0:14:31 > 0:14:32Tricky, isn't it?

0:14:32 > 0:14:36I think it's on the market for...

0:14:36 > 0:14:39- 565.- OK.

0:14:39 > 0:14:44- OK, I'm going to go slightly low - 550.- OK.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Your top budget is £600,000.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49Frances, you're the closest.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53£575,000 is the asking price.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55There we go.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Now, you're rubbing your hands with glee.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01- Is that cos you got closest on the price, or...- Both, I think.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03..that's well within your budget?

0:15:03 > 0:15:05We're happy to do some work and that budget

0:15:05 > 0:15:07- would certainly allow us to do that.- Good.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10It always makes a difference once you know the price

0:15:10 > 0:15:12and you take a second look around a property.

0:15:12 > 0:15:13So why don't you do that?

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Take as long as you like, give me a shout when you're ready.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17- Lovely. Thank you.- See you.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23'Well within their budget at £575,000,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26'this pretty period cottage has got us

0:15:26 > 0:15:28'off to a good start and provides them

0:15:28 > 0:15:30'with a spacious kitchen/diner,

0:15:30 > 0:15:32'plus utility room and boot room.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36'The sitting room has lots of character and, upstairs,

0:15:36 > 0:15:38'there are four bedrooms they asked for.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40'Outside, the manageable garden

0:15:40 > 0:15:42'amounts to a third of an acre.'

0:15:42 > 0:15:45What's in there? Yeah.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47That's got lots of scope, hasn't it?

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Indeed, yeah. That's an en suite.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52We could turn it into an en suite, yeah.

0:15:52 > 0:15:53I think that's what you'd do.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56I thought it looked a very quaint English house.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58To be honest, I thought it felt quite small.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00But then, as you walk through the rest of the house,

0:16:00 > 0:16:04downstairs especially, it opens up and the light from the conservatory

0:16:04 > 0:16:07certainly makes the downstairs space quite inviting.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10I really like the outside space the property has to offer.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14It's got a good-sized garden, it's mature, there's lots of scope

0:16:14 > 0:16:17to change the layout a little bit and really make it our own.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21So, it's definitely a contender, I think.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23How are we doing?

0:16:23 > 0:16:25- Great, thanks.- Happy? Seen enough?

0:16:25 > 0:16:28Yes. Very good start.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29An interesting start, very good.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Good, right, we'll continue then.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46For the last 500 years, Hampshire's Portsmouth Dockyard has been one

0:16:46 > 0:16:50of the country's most historically important maritime sites.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53It's said to be the place where tea arrived when it was first introduced

0:16:53 > 0:16:56to Britain in the reign of Charles II,

0:16:56 > 0:16:59back in the 17th century.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Rather fittingly, these days it's home to an independent tea

0:17:02 > 0:17:06importer and blender, whose factory uses handraulic methods

0:17:06 > 0:17:09to blend the teas and make tea bags.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11As Andy and Frances committed gourmets,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14we sent them to meet Andrew Gadsden

0:17:14 > 0:17:16from the All About Tea company,

0:17:16 > 0:17:18to learn about the method for tasting tea

0:17:18 > 0:17:20and to make some for themselves.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Tea, like wine, is a product that changes.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25It's a natural product that's grown,

0:17:25 > 0:17:28so it depends upon where it's grown and it depends upon

0:17:28 > 0:17:30what the weather's been that week or that day

0:17:30 > 0:17:33and it depends upon the skill of the person who's

0:17:33 > 0:17:36in charge of the factory who's processing the tea that day,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39because it is a processed product when it leaves the factory.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42Professional tea tasting involves engaging

0:17:42 > 0:17:45the 9,000 taste buds on the tongue.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48The tea is slurped to bring in a good volume of oxygen

0:17:48 > 0:17:49to help to find the taste of the tea.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51So would you like to taste some tea?

0:17:51 > 0:17:52- Yes, we'd love to.- Great.

0:17:52 > 0:17:57It might get a little bit messy, so I've got some coats here for you.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59OK, so we've got the orange.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01HE SLURPS

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Which has got the orange peel

0:18:03 > 0:18:05and the flowers and so on and the orange oil.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- Give it a go.- Have a go, Frances.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Don't be embarrassed, honestly, everyone...

0:18:10 > 0:18:12SHE SLURPS

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- Great!- Haven't quite got the technique, but it tastes good.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17And then you've got the Earl Grey at the end.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- That's the orange fannings you're on, Andy.- Yeah, that's...

0:18:20 > 0:18:23- That's lovely, the Earl Grey. - ..very distinct.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Having tasted those, what's the style that you like?

0:18:26 > 0:18:29My favourite was definitely the lemon.

0:18:29 > 0:18:30Lemon. Great, OK.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32It would be quite an easy thing for us

0:18:32 > 0:18:35together now to make up a blend.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38so we're going to put a few teas together and some flavourings.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41- If you'd like to follow me, we'll do that now.- Thank you.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44So, with the tasting done, Andy and Frances are going to have

0:18:44 > 0:18:48a go at blending some lemon and ginger flavoured tea.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50We're going to do a very simple blend.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52We're going to do just 80/20.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55- So we'll do 80% Ceylon...- OK.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58..and 20% Tingamira.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01You're on some scales. Ready to make some tea bags after that.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Normally, we would leave teas for a period of time,

0:19:04 > 0:19:07for a couple of days, just to rest, for the blends to marry.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Pour it in, that's brilliant.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11First some ground ginger

0:19:11 > 0:19:14and a generous amount of lemon oil are added to flavour the tea.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18That's it. Now what we do is give it a few turns.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Every tea bag has to be perfectly blended.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Then it's all mixed together in this cast-iron blending machine,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27which is around 170 years old.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Now, the next stage of the process is

0:19:33 > 0:19:35we're going to make tea bags with it.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38So tea goes in here, paper goes in there

0:19:38 > 0:19:40and the tea bags come out of the bottom.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Perhaps, Frances, you would like

0:19:42 > 0:19:46to turn that button there clockwise, to the one position.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Tea from the hopper goes down through a chamber

0:19:48 > 0:19:52and into the bags, which then come off the bag-making roller

0:19:52 > 0:19:55and are heat-sealed before dropping into the out-tray.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59- There are your tea bags coming out. - Great!

0:19:59 > 0:20:01- Superb.- Thank you.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03Mmm. Smells lovely.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Go on. His and hers tea bags.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08- Fantastic, smells great. - Thank you, Andrew.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12So now that our buyers have their tea, let's hope they appreciate

0:20:12 > 0:20:16the perfect blend of elements in store at our remaining properties.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Our second house takes us 16 miles west of Winchester

0:20:28 > 0:20:31to Lockerley, Hampshire's largest village parish.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34It's a drive of just over 15 miles to the M3

0:20:34 > 0:20:37for when they need to return to London.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40Based around four village greens which are preserved as common land,

0:20:40 > 0:20:44the amenities of this active community include a church

0:20:44 > 0:20:45built in the late 1880s,

0:20:45 > 0:20:47a pub that serves local ales

0:20:47 > 0:20:51and a village shop for everyday necessities.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55Property number two is a Grade II listed whitewashed cottage,

0:20:55 > 0:20:57which dates back to the 1700s.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01And I think Frances and Andy will agree that the thatched roof

0:21:01 > 0:21:04helps tremendously in delivering the character they're after.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09So I want to show you our second property.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Wow. Amazing. Very cute.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16Yes, quite different to the last one. I like the look of it. It's nice.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Have you ever considered living in a thatched cottage?

0:21:19 > 0:21:24- No.- We haven't, but we're open to seeing what it's like.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26- Good.- Absolutely, yes.- Good.

0:21:26 > 0:21:27So shall we start the tour?

0:21:27 > 0:21:31- Yes, let's do it.- House number two? - Great.- Come on.- Thank you.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34'Along with that well-preserved character exterior, inside

0:21:34 > 0:21:38'has been sympathetically renovated, as they'll see in the kitchen.'

0:21:40 > 0:21:43So, you've got this lobby area.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45- Very nice.- Which leads us...

0:21:45 > 0:21:49- Oh, this is lovely.- How's this for a kitchen?- Fantastic.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Wow! This is very nice indeed.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54- Bags of character.- Yeah, indeed.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56It's got character, it's modern.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Yeah. But it's got a nice country feel, hasn't it?

0:21:58 > 0:22:01I love the island, as well. That's great.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- It's big, it's got... - You could just imagine having lots of dinner parties in here.- Indeed.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Yeah, it's got almost like an open-plan kitchen/diner.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11It's lovely. Very nice.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13So if you are having a dinner party, for example,

0:22:13 > 0:22:14you'd be cooking, getting it all ready,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17and your friends would be sitting there at the table.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18And if you just look to the left,

0:22:18 > 0:22:20there's access there to a drawing-room,

0:22:20 > 0:22:24but I'm going to take you this way, to the other side of the property.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28'So, we found Frances the perfect place for her baking,

0:22:28 > 0:22:32'as well as a brilliant setting for them to host social gatherings.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35'But let's get their view on the main sitting room.'

0:22:35 > 0:22:38- And then...- Wow.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40- This is gorgeous.- A good size for a main reception room.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Yeah, it's a good size. Yeah, it's a big room.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Really lovely, really bright, as well.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Love the beams, love the fireplace.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50And the house does have exposed brickwork

0:22:50 > 0:22:53and beams throughout, but they don't dominate the room, do they?

0:22:53 > 0:22:58No. You know, decorated very much to our own taste,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01so we wouldn't have to do anything, we could just move straight in.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Yes, it's fantastic.- Good. - So far, so good.- Yeah.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Right, that's put the pressure on me

0:23:09 > 0:23:10for upstairs, hasn't it?

0:23:10 > 0:23:12- Let's keep going.- Thank you.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15'I'm pleased they've fallen for the charms of the downstairs,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18'and upstairs should keep up the momentum,

0:23:18 > 0:23:21'with four very good-sized bedrooms.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24'There is a huge spare double, and two other slightly smaller ones,

0:23:24 > 0:23:27'so they could put one to use as a study.

0:23:27 > 0:23:31'And they all share a luxuriously large family bathroom.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34'But I'm going to show them where they could be sleeping.'

0:23:34 > 0:23:36So for the master bedroom,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40if you want to stick your head in there, you've got an en suite.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44- That's huge!- Yeah.- For an en suite. - That's normally a family bathroom.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Exactly, it's bigger than our main bathroom at home.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51- Very nice tiling behind the shower. - And then here's your bedroom.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54- Really lovely. Great size. - Great-sized room.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57So some really positive comments as we walked round.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59Is this much more the sort of way you'd like to live your lives,

0:23:59 > 0:24:02in this type of environment?

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Yeah, I think it's much more us, I would say,

0:24:04 > 0:24:05rather than the last property.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09- Let's keep going on that positive note, back downstairs.- Fantastic.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13'So this house seems to have really won them over,

0:24:13 > 0:24:16'and there's still the garden to see.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19'To the side and rear of the house, there's a secluded patio area,

0:24:19 > 0:24:22'and a large expanse of lawn.'

0:24:26 > 0:24:32- So here is the back of the property. - Wow. It's beautiful, isn't it?

0:24:32 > 0:24:36- Yeah, really is gorgeous. - Really stunning.- Yeah, beautiful.

0:24:36 > 0:24:37You don't see this from,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39as you are approaching the property. From the other side,

0:24:39 > 0:24:42you just wouldn't imagine it looked this beautiful from the other side.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44OK, we're going to talk finances now.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47How much is this cottage on the market for?

0:24:49 > 0:24:51I think it's a bit more than the last one,

0:24:51 > 0:24:55and a bit more over our budget, so I would guess £625,000.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Right, 25 over your budget. OK.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01OK, I'm going to come in slightly lower again,

0:25:01 > 0:25:03just under budget at 595.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07- OK, well, Andy, you're the closest. - Oh, wow!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10I thought you were competitive?

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Well, I am, but actually that's a win-win.

0:25:12 > 0:25:17You're right, actually, because it is cheaper, it's £585,000,

0:25:17 > 0:25:20so you've still got some money left in the bank.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- Fancy a second tour, but this time on your own?- Yes, please.

0:25:23 > 0:25:24Be my guest.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31'Under budget at £585,000, this charming thatched property

0:25:31 > 0:25:34'addresses everything on their list of demands.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37'It has a huge sociable kitchen/diner,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40'two other separate reception rooms, four bedrooms,

0:25:40 > 0:25:45'so one could be used as a study, and a large enclosed garden.'

0:25:45 > 0:25:48This house is more what I was hoping to see.

0:25:48 > 0:25:53I love the dining area, I love the fireplace in there, the wood burner.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56The garden, again, about the right size.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00So, yeah, all in all, it's good, and the price is also right, as well.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03I really like this house. The proportions are fantastic,

0:26:03 > 0:26:06the layout is great, so we wouldn't need to change anything,

0:26:06 > 0:26:08we could just move straight in,

0:26:08 > 0:26:12but I suppose my only concern would be being right on the road.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16So, I think that's the only negative that we would need to think about.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21- Right, you two, have you seen enough?- Yes, we've seen enough. - Happy?

0:26:21 > 0:26:25- Yes.- Excellent, right, we're going to hit the road now.- Thanks, Nicki.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39'As dusk falls over the beautiful Hampshire landscape,

0:26:39 > 0:26:42'it marks the end of a very positive first day

0:26:42 > 0:26:43'in our property search.

0:26:48 > 0:26:53'Armed with £600,000, Andy and Frances are looking to upsize

0:26:53 > 0:26:58'from their London maisonette to a house in the Hampshire countryside.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01'So far, they've been impressed by a character property

0:27:01 > 0:27:03'with enough room for chickens in the garden,

0:27:03 > 0:27:06'and enraptured by a stunning thatched cottage,

0:27:06 > 0:27:11'but coming up, the mystery house provides stiff competition.'

0:27:11 > 0:27:13I could hear you both going, "wow, wow!"

0:27:14 > 0:27:17Well, it is the wow factor, certainly.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18'And I meet some British

0:27:18 > 0:27:22'birds of prey at Hampshire's Hawk Conservancy Trust.'

0:27:25 > 0:27:29We've shown Andy and Frances two properties so far here in Hampshire.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33Now the first one received a positive response.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Well, I say positive - were they just being polite?

0:27:36 > 0:27:39The second one, that large thatched cottage was certainly

0:27:39 > 0:27:43to their liking, so today, it's time to show them our third

0:27:43 > 0:27:46and final property - of course, the mystery house.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49So will this be the one that seals the deal?

0:27:51 > 0:27:54We are travelling around 11 miles south-east of Winchester,

0:27:54 > 0:27:57to Bishop's Waltham, under nine miles from the nearest

0:27:57 > 0:28:00junction of the M3, for those trips to London.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03To find out more, we're dropping in to meet Sophie Green,

0:28:03 > 0:28:05who runs the local sweet shop.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10BELL RINGS

0:28:11 > 0:28:13- Hi, Sophie.- Good morning.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17Oh, my goodness, what an impressive array of different sweets.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20How many different varieties are there?

0:28:20 > 0:28:21We've got 240 sweets in the jars.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24Oh, my goodness, I wouldn't mind trying those,

0:28:24 > 0:28:27- would you?- No, absolutely.- We might be here quite a time though.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30Because the guys are thinking of buying in Hampshire,

0:28:30 > 0:28:34- so can you tell us, as a local, a little bit more about the area? - Yep, sure.

0:28:34 > 0:28:38It's got a fantastic range of shops, from the butcher's, fishmonger's,

0:28:38 > 0:28:43greengrocer's, through to very specialised ladies' boutiques.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47So it's the kind of village you can get nearly everything you need.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Good to know. Is there a good community spirit?

0:28:49 > 0:28:53Is it a good place to bring up children, for instance?

0:28:53 > 0:28:56It's got a good range of local schools,

0:28:56 > 0:28:58so you're almost spoilt for choice.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01There's a lot going on for children, lots of children's clubs,

0:29:01 > 0:29:06and activities, and there's also things for the community.

0:29:06 > 0:29:10- We have markets in the High Street on a Sunday.- Lovely.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12I don't think we can come to a sweet shop,

0:29:12 > 0:29:15and not buy some for our house tour. What do we reckon?

0:29:15 > 0:29:19- What about rhubarb and custard? - Oh, yes, can't go wrong.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23- Brings back memories. Yes, please. Thank you.- What would you like?

0:29:23 > 0:29:26- A quarter?- That would be perfect.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31- Great, how much is that? - That is- £1. Lovely.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34- That's great.- And on that sweet note, we'll leave you.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37- Sophie, thanks very much indeed. Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42'On the outskirts, set on a quiet lane,

0:29:42 > 0:29:46'our mystery property has a little less space than they asked for,

0:29:46 > 0:29:49'and it's one of an attached group of four residences,

0:29:49 > 0:29:51'so definitely not detached.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54'We are about to find out if Frances and Andy

0:29:54 > 0:29:57'will want to swap Barnes, in London,

0:29:57 > 0:29:59'for a 17th century barn conversion.'

0:30:00 > 0:30:05- Well.- Very interesting.- Intriguing. - Not what you expected?

0:30:05 > 0:30:07- A mystery, indeed. - It's still a mystery.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09It is our mystery house.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12You've probably noticed, well, it's a rather large barn, isn't it?

0:30:12 > 0:30:15- It's actually four properties in total.- OK.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19So, the barn that we're going to be looking at is that one there.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21It looks lovely, can't wait to see inside.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Yeah, I love that large glass front to it.

0:30:24 > 0:30:28- Have you ever looked inside a barn before?- Never.- So it's a first time?

0:30:28 > 0:30:32- Yeah, this is going to be a first. - Shall we start?- Yes.- Come on then.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37'They seem quite enthusiastic about our barn conversion,

0:30:37 > 0:30:40'and when they see how this former cowshed has been radically

0:30:40 > 0:30:44'renovated since 2004, I think they'll be delighted.'

0:30:52 > 0:30:55- So what do you both think? - Wow, it's amazing.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58- A great-looking property, lovely. - Absolutely gorgeous.- Very nice.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01- So beautifully done, isn't it? - Yes.- Very much so.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Just an incredible sense of space, isn't there?

0:31:04 > 0:31:07With the big windows, and the light flooding in.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09Very airy, very warm, I would say.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Given a lot of windows,

0:31:11 > 0:31:13you might expect it to be a bit cold, but it's very cosy.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16I could hear you both going, (WHISPERS) "Wow, wow."

0:31:17 > 0:31:20Yes, well, it is the wow factor, certainly.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23Yeah, now, I can see your eye, your eye's drawn, Andy, isn't it?

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Try not to look at the garden, I don't want to give too much away,

0:31:26 > 0:31:30straightaway, because we're going to start off with the sitting room.

0:31:31 > 0:31:35- So just up a few steps. - Well, this is lovely.

0:31:35 > 0:31:36That's impressive, isn't it?

0:31:36 > 0:31:39I think you can spot the 17th-century beam there, can't you?

0:31:39 > 0:31:42Yes. They've done it so well.

0:31:42 > 0:31:46- And you've got your wood burner in the corner.- Fantastic.

0:31:46 > 0:31:52- It's modern, it's very much our taste in decor.- I would say so, yeah.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55OK, so shall we continue? We are going to go downstairs.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59- Andy, you lead the way.- OK.- Down those stairs there, to the kitchen.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02'And as the chef of the house, Frances will hopefully

0:32:02 > 0:32:06'warm to the area where she could be preparing for her dinner parties.'

0:32:07 > 0:32:11So, as you come down, on a different level, you have the kitchen.

0:32:11 > 0:32:17- This is lovely.- Yeah.- Very nice, lots of units, lots of workspace.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21- Yeah, it's a good size.- And a range! - Yeah, plenty of work surfaces.

0:32:21 > 0:32:25Yeah, and a nice flow with the dining area, as well.

0:32:25 > 0:32:29Yes, and also on this level, you've got a guest bedroom,

0:32:29 > 0:32:32through there, and a shower room, as well.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35- So guests could be sort of on their own, this side of the property.- Yes.

0:32:35 > 0:32:37That's a nice idea.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41- Good, right, have you seen enough on this level?- I think so.

0:32:41 > 0:32:42'So far, they seem impressed

0:32:42 > 0:32:46'by our imaginatively converted mystery house.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49'The accommodation upstairs is laid out over two levels.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52'At the very top, on the second floor,

0:32:52 > 0:32:56'there's an open-plan study area that makes great use of the space.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58'In addition, there's also a playroom,

0:32:58 > 0:33:02'but we're heading for the largest bedroom, on the first floor.'

0:33:02 > 0:33:07- So here is where you'd sleep. - Lovely, beautiful room.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10- High ceiling. - Look at how high that is.- So high!

0:33:10 > 0:33:12Now, it doesn't have an en suite,

0:33:12 > 0:33:14but the family bathroom's just across the way,

0:33:14 > 0:33:17and there's a smaller bedroom the other side of the corridor,

0:33:17 > 0:33:21but what you do have is, if I can turn the light on...

0:33:21 > 0:33:24- Goodness, this is a dream.- Da-da! - Yeah, that's a good size.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28- Walk-in wardrobe, it's huge. - So where's your stuff going to go?

0:33:28 > 0:33:29THEY LAUGH

0:33:29 > 0:33:31It's lovely, so it's a good use of the space,

0:33:31 > 0:33:35- and I think that makes all the difference.- It really does, yeah.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38Right, well, we haven't seen the garden properly yet,

0:33:38 > 0:33:40so let's head back downstairs.

0:33:41 > 0:33:45'So, we've granted an unexpected wish for Frances,

0:33:45 > 0:33:46'with a walk-in wardrobe.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50'But now we'll see if the garden lives up to their expectations.'

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Well, it might be raining, but I think it's worth getting

0:33:54 > 0:33:58a bit damp just to come out and see this garden.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00It's gorgeous. It's quite a big garden as well.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02It is, a good size, yeah, excellent.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05You also have an outbuilding, right at the end of the garden, which is

0:34:05 > 0:34:09pretty generous in size, so you can use that for storage, as well.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12- Brilliant.- Great, yeah. - So, we're going to have to talk money now, aren't we?

0:34:12 > 0:34:14Andy, you're the accountant. Shall we start with you?

0:34:14 > 0:34:16You must be good with figures.

0:34:16 > 0:34:20- OK, I'm going to say the same as yesterday, actually - 595.- OK.

0:34:20 > 0:34:27And I think I'm also going to go the same as the last property at 625.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32OK, interesting. The asking price is...

0:34:32 > 0:34:40- ..£599,950.- Wow.- That's great. - So just under your budget.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43But we wouldn't have to do anything, we could move straight in.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46- Why don't you have another look around?- Yeah, that would be lovely.

0:34:46 > 0:34:47And also, do check out the garden.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Start off of the house. You never know, it might stop raining,

0:34:50 > 0:34:52and we'll meet up when you're ready.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54- Lovely.- Great.- After you.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02Giving them £50 change from their £600,000,

0:35:02 > 0:35:04our mystery barn conversion may be attached,

0:35:04 > 0:35:07but it is well located for their travel to work,

0:35:07 > 0:35:11and provides them with a huge welcoming reception room,

0:35:11 > 0:35:16a generous kitchen and dining area, a study space upstairs,

0:35:16 > 0:35:22three bedrooms, one with a walk-in wardrobe, and a generous garden.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24I like the house, it's an interesting property.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28I can see Fran and I living here. It's our kind of place,

0:35:28 > 0:35:31and the finish is very good, so we wouldn't have to do much to it.

0:35:31 > 0:35:33There's no doubt it's an absolutely lovely house.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38I think my only concern would be that it is a little bit too

0:35:38 > 0:35:40small, in terms of missing an extra bedroom.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43The fourth bedroom that we would be hoping for.

0:35:43 > 0:35:47So, overall, a good option, we definitely like it,

0:35:47 > 0:35:51but I would say just a little bit too small, would be my concern.

0:35:53 > 0:35:55- OK, guys?- Yes, thank you.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58I bet you want some time now, don't you, to have a think,

0:35:58 > 0:36:01- a chat amongst yourselves, and then we should meet up?- Definitely.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03- That sounds good.- Come on then.

0:36:14 > 0:36:18'Lying in the heart of Hampshire, just west of Andover,

0:36:18 > 0:36:20'is the site of the Hawk Conservancy Trust,

0:36:20 > 0:36:24'which since the 1980s has become one of the country's most

0:36:24 > 0:36:27'important centres, specialising in the care

0:36:27 > 0:36:31'and conservation of Britain's wild birds of prey.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34'Set in 22 acres of woodland and wildflower meadow,

0:36:34 > 0:36:38'there are over 150 birds of prey on view.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40'Many of these birds are involved in

0:36:40 > 0:36:42'spectacular daily flying demonstrations,

0:36:42 > 0:36:47'whilst others are part of important breeding or research projects.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49'I went along to find out more about their work,

0:36:49 > 0:36:53'and meet some of the birds, with the help of Kim Kirkbride,

0:36:53 > 0:36:57'head of section for the Trust's national bird of prey hospital.'

0:36:57 > 0:37:00- Who is this little fellow? - This is Lark.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03Lark is a peregrine falcon, which is in fact the fastest living thing.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05So how fast could he go?

0:37:05 > 0:37:09He could go anything from 180-200 mph when he is chasing his prey.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12- Faster than anything else on the planet?- Yep.

0:37:12 > 0:37:14Well, how can they go so fast?

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Well, when they are going at speed, chasing their prey,

0:37:16 > 0:37:18they have the wind behind them,

0:37:18 > 0:37:21so that's when they can tear themselves together,

0:37:21 > 0:37:24and they basically do like a bullet, like a teardrop shape out of the sky.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27Their nares, which are the two holes just above his beak here,

0:37:27 > 0:37:28they are designed to slow down the air,

0:37:28 > 0:37:30so when it hits his lungs,

0:37:30 > 0:37:32he's actually going at a normal breathing rate,

0:37:32 > 0:37:35rather than going superfast into the lungs, and making them explode.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37So they are adapted to go at these really high speeds.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39- Now, he is an impressive sight. - BIRD SQUAWKS

0:37:39 > 0:37:43Someone's talking to us. Who's behind us, making all the noise?

0:37:43 > 0:37:47The one behind us is Cheyenne. She is an American bald eagle,

0:37:47 > 0:37:49the national emblem of the United States,

0:37:49 > 0:37:52and she flies for us here in our demonstration.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54We've got the wildflower meadow at the top of the park,

0:37:54 > 0:37:57but it opens out into a valley,

0:37:57 > 0:37:59so it means the birds can rely on the lift, which are the thermals

0:37:59 > 0:38:03they need to rise up and fly really well in demonstrations.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05So it is a really good setting for us.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08'A bird of prey is defined as one that attacks

0:38:08 > 0:38:14'and kills its food with its feet, using its long curved talons.'

0:38:14 > 0:38:17It's not just caring for these magnificent creatures,

0:38:17 > 0:38:19you also do a lot of research here, don't you?

0:38:19 > 0:38:23Yeah, we do a lot of research with birds that we have in the hospital.

0:38:23 > 0:38:27For example, we want to know the correct technical release

0:38:27 > 0:38:30methods, so how the best way to release them would come about.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32And also their survival rates, as well.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36So whether or not rehabilitation does work for these species.

0:38:36 > 0:38:40'The Trust's hospital treats around 200 birds a year, which are

0:38:40 > 0:38:42'brought in by members of the public,

0:38:42 > 0:38:44'or wildlife rescue organisations.

0:38:44 > 0:38:48'It's mainly due to illness or injury, and in particular,

0:38:48 > 0:38:51'a great many fledgling birds are admitted in the spring.

0:38:51 > 0:38:54'Today I'm about to witness the release of one of the UK's

0:38:54 > 0:38:57'most common birds of prey, a buzzard,

0:38:57 > 0:38:59'which was treated for puncture injuries,

0:38:59 > 0:39:01'possibly from a fox attack, and is

0:39:01 > 0:39:04'now well enough to leave the centre.'

0:39:04 > 0:39:06So, Kim, why have you selected this location

0:39:06 > 0:39:08on Salisbury Plain to release the buzzard?

0:39:08 > 0:39:12This is actually where he was found, so we release, where possible,

0:39:12 > 0:39:14back to the exact same location.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17Because they might already have a territory here,

0:39:17 > 0:39:19and even youngsters during the spring.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21So it is going full circle, releasing him back?

0:39:21 > 0:39:23This must be what the Trust's work is all about?

0:39:23 > 0:39:26It is, you know, to actually have the bird in, look after it,

0:39:26 > 0:39:29and to be able to release it back to where it came from, you know,

0:39:29 > 0:39:32- it's just the best thing possible. - So, Kim, this is it,

0:39:32 > 0:39:36- being released back into the wild, where he belongs?- He is, indeed.

0:39:36 > 0:39:37We'll pop him on the floor.

0:39:37 > 0:39:42- So if you hold on to the plastic, I'm going to peel back the towel.- OK.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45OK, I'll take that off of there, peel back the towel,

0:39:45 > 0:39:48lift this flap up, and then, when you're ready,

0:39:48 > 0:39:51- if you take that side, I'll take this side, and he should go.- OK. Ready.

0:39:51 > 0:39:52- OK, You ready?- This is it.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55TOGETHER: One, two, three.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00Looks, he's quite dazzled.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02Wow.

0:40:03 > 0:40:07How rewarding, amazing, Kim. Listen, thank you for letting us

0:40:07 > 0:40:09share this wonderful moment.

0:40:12 > 0:40:17Well, that's something you don't get to do every day - truly amazing.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20But it's time now to join our house-hunters,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24and find out if they're ready to spread their wings in Hampshire.

0:40:28 > 0:40:29Well, Andy and Frances,

0:40:29 > 0:40:32we've had an interesting few days here in beautiful Hampshire.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35Well, let's get into the houses. We showed you three.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37Let's start with the very first one, the cottage.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39What were your first impressions?

0:40:39 > 0:40:43Well, it had a lovely front garden, didn't it? And a lovely driveway.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47Very nice. Quintessential English cottage, very nice.

0:40:47 > 0:40:51Inside was a little bit different, in that there was quite a lot

0:40:51 > 0:40:56of work to be done to make it the ideal home for us.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58- Probably too much work. - Yeah, a great start, though.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02So, we then took you to the west of the county, quite close to the

0:41:02 > 0:41:06Wiltshire border, and showed you a very large thatched cottage.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08Yes, it was stunning, Nicki.

0:41:08 > 0:41:13The decor was to our taste. It was a great size, wasn't it?

0:41:13 > 0:41:16Loads of space, amazing kitchen.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18We felt at home there. It was how we would have...

0:41:18 > 0:41:20..similar to how we would have done it.

0:41:20 > 0:41:24In an ideal world, if it was in a quieter street,

0:41:24 > 0:41:26and set back from the road, that would have...

0:41:26 > 0:41:28It would have been the perfect cottage.

0:41:28 > 0:41:32The final property we showed you was the mystery house, a collection

0:41:32 > 0:41:36of beautifully done barns, and that didn't seem to faze you at all.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39No, it didn't. I think once you got into the property,

0:41:39 > 0:41:41from looking out the front door, and also out the back garden,

0:41:41 > 0:41:44you couldn't actually see any of the adjoining barns,

0:41:44 > 0:41:47so it didn't actually feel as if you are part of a four-barn conversion.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49It's really our taste, done to our taste,

0:41:49 > 0:41:51so that's the sort of thing you could just

0:41:51 > 0:41:54move straight into, and not have to change anything.

0:41:54 > 0:41:59So out of the three properties, was the barn probably the closest?

0:41:59 > 0:42:01I think in many ways it was,

0:42:01 > 0:42:05with the exception that it was just a little bit too small.

0:42:05 > 0:42:09So using this as hopefully a good experience, are you still

0:42:09 > 0:42:12thinking that Hampshire is the right county for you?

0:42:12 > 0:42:15I think we definitely are, but will probably look towards the

0:42:15 > 0:42:20north of the county, further, so that we're just that bit closer to London.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22It's been really, really useful in eliminating

0:42:22 > 0:42:24some of the things that we don't want,

0:42:24 > 0:42:28but also seeing things that we perhaps would have ruled out,

0:42:28 > 0:42:30- such as a thatched cottage. - Absolutely.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32We would have never looked at that on our own.

0:42:32 > 0:42:34Well, I'm glad that we've been able to help,

0:42:34 > 0:42:37and I hope you find that perfect property in the north of the county.

0:42:37 > 0:42:39- Thanks so much.- Thank you.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47So, unfortunately no house sale today,

0:42:47 > 0:42:51but what Andy and Frances have gleaned over the last few days
