0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm risking an explosive start to another Escape To The Country,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06at the site of an old gunpowder works

0:00:06 > 0:00:09that served not one but two revolutions.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Where am I? Find out in just a moment.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32Today's house-hunters are longing to settle and start a new life

0:00:32 > 0:00:33in the countryside.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37Our properties offer more space than our buyers could have hoped for...

0:00:37 > 0:00:40I love it. It's three sizes more than we're used to.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43..and locations beyond their expectations.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Our very own waterfall. Very nice.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Today I'm in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57And behind me is Low Wood Tower in the southern edge of the park.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Now a Grade II-listed building,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03it was built on the site of an old gunpowder works

0:01:03 > 0:01:07that supplied munitions for ships during the early part

0:01:07 > 0:01:09of the French Revolutionary Wars.

0:01:09 > 0:01:15Used right up until 1935, the local forests would supply the wood

0:01:15 > 0:01:17that was then baked to create charcoal.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21Add sulphur from Italy and saltpetre from India,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23and boom, you've got gunpowder.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27Cumbria is the most north-westerly county of England,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30bordered by Northumberland, County Durham,

0:01:30 > 0:01:34North Yorkshire, Lancashire and the Scottish Borders.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Dominating the county is the Lake District National Park,

0:01:38 > 0:01:42formed over 400 million years ago when volcanic rock was gouged out

0:01:42 > 0:01:47by ice age glaciers and is now the largest national park in England.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50The scenery within the park's boundaries

0:01:50 > 0:01:51is both beautiful and diverse,

0:01:51 > 0:01:56boasting 16 lakes, 150 high peaks,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58six national nature reserves

0:01:58 > 0:02:00and some 400 towns, villages and hamlets,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03all of which come together to make the Lake District

0:02:03 > 0:02:06one of the UK's most fascinating regions.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Attracting over 40 million tourists annually,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Cumbria employs around 57,000 people in the tourist industry,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16on land and on water.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19And no doubt some find themselves on Lake Windermere,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22which is England's biggest natural lake.

0:02:22 > 0:02:23And despite its popularity,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26the vast size of it means you don't have to look too hard

0:02:26 > 0:02:28to find more peaceful pockets.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35If you are looking to make your very own escape to the country

0:02:35 > 0:02:37and don't mind a bit of weather,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39then you might want to consider Cumbria.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43As it stands, the average price of a detached house in England and Wales

0:02:43 > 0:02:46comes in at around £282,000.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50But here in Cumbria, that figure drops by 50 grand.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Now, within the Lake District National Park,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56you will need an extra £40,000 above the national average.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59So buyers will have to work even harder to find bargains

0:02:59 > 0:03:02with that prestigious park's postcode.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Food for thought, then, for today's buyers.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07So let's meet them and find out what is pulling them up here

0:03:07 > 0:03:10to this beautiful, if not sometimes damp, part of the world.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15Ten years ago, Harvey and fiancee Dominika met in a London pub,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17where she was working during a summer break

0:03:17 > 0:03:20from her university studies in Poland.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Three years later, she made the move here to settle

0:03:22 > 0:03:24and start a new life with Harvey.

0:03:25 > 0:03:31Harvey is basically just a ray of sunshine in my life. And...

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- The other half of the apple, as you put it.- Yes, he is.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37And we really make each other very happy.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39In 2013,

0:03:39 > 0:03:43Harvey was made redundant after 25 years of working

0:03:43 > 0:03:45in a private London bank.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Feeling like he's reached a crossroads in his life,

0:03:47 > 0:03:51now seems the right time to embrace a move to the countryside.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Since Harvey is not commuting every day,

0:03:55 > 0:03:57there's no reason for us to live here.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59I'm not a city boy. I love nature.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04I like to be surrounded by trees and mountains and lakes and streams,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06not buildings and people.

0:04:07 > 0:04:08Over the last 20 years,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Harvey has visited the Lake District most years,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14and his passion for the region seems to have rubbed off on Domi, too,

0:04:14 > 0:04:18since taking her to see the area when they first met.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22I think it's absolutely beautiful, and it's really quiet.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25It's very green. It's absolutely lovely.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27When I go up there, I feel alive, I feel connected,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30which is not the way I feel down here.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Excited about getting back to nature and escaping the city,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37it's the wilderness of the Lake District National Park

0:04:37 > 0:04:39that they're particularly drawn to.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44The location is the priority for us, not property as such.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49The countryside in there is very hilly, very rugged.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Lots of water, forests, woodlands, that kind of thing.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54So very, very varied.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59And there's obviously very pretty villages as well.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01The natural beauty of the Lakes' landscape

0:05:01 > 0:05:04and Harvey's love of walking inspires him to write,

0:05:04 > 0:05:07having won a competition in a national magazine.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11I'm hoping to maybe put together

0:05:11 > 0:05:14the ultimate armchair walkers' guide to the Lake District.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Harvey loves going for very long walks.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Very high.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23And I can climb anywhere, but in my own time!

0:05:23 > 0:05:25SHE LAUGHS

0:05:25 > 0:05:27I refer to Dominika as the slug,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30because I usually have to drag her behind me!

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Their house in south-east London has been sold,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36so they're ready to begin the search

0:05:36 > 0:05:38for their dream country home in earnest.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41It's a new life for us.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43The opportunity is here, it's now.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45And I've got to make the most of it.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53With Harvey and Domi chomping at the bit to find their new home,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56they're fairly open to living anywhere within

0:05:56 > 0:05:57the Lake District National Park -

0:05:57 > 0:06:00as long as it has good motorway connections to airports

0:06:00 > 0:06:02so Domi can visit family in Poland,

0:06:02 > 0:06:06and a 45-minute drive from her new job in Kendal.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Since selling up, Harvey and Domi have been renting

0:06:08 > 0:06:10for the last two weeks in the Lake District.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13So I'm meeting up with them to pinpoint exactly what

0:06:13 > 0:06:16they're after from their new countryside pad.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18So, you're here in the Lake District,

0:06:18 > 0:06:20- which is... I know it is YOUR favourite place.- Yep.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Harvey, it is my favourite place. And it's now your favourite place.

0:06:23 > 0:06:28- It is.- We're all happy bunnies.- We are.- So you both want to move here.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31And I understand things have moved on incredibly.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35- You now have a job here. - I do. I started it last Monday.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38So how are things with the house down south?

0:06:38 > 0:06:40- We sold our house down south.- Yeah.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43And now we are renting, and we're up here.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- What's great news for me is, you're both committed purchasers.- Yeah.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- You've got money in the bank. - We are ready to go.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Have you got your dream house in your mind's eye?

0:06:53 > 0:06:55The actual property itself, as I say -

0:06:55 > 0:06:57attractive, detached, perhaps character.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59That sounds rather nice. How about you, Domi?

0:06:59 > 0:07:01What do you want from this house?

0:07:01 > 0:07:07We are quite comfortable with cosy and small.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Harvey is going to be out and about.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13I'm going to be at work and we don't really need that big space.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14All right.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17As long as we've got some space for people to come and visit us,

0:07:17 > 0:07:18family and friends.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20How many bedrooms do you need?

0:07:20 > 0:07:24- Two is minimum, but if we've got a third one, that will be a bonus.- OK.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27And if you've got people to stay, you want to entertain, I imagine.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Entertain or... I think it's more...

0:07:29 > 0:07:31I'm not talking about dancing.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- I think it's more put them up for the night.- Oh, right, OK.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38- And then take them down the pub. - Yeah, yeah, exactly.- Anything else?

0:07:38 > 0:07:41We would love to have a second toilet in the house.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42THEY LAUGH

0:07:43 > 0:07:46- Downstairs toilet. - A second toilet?

0:07:46 > 0:07:50OK. I... That's thrown me a little bit. All right, fine.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53So let's talk about the location.

0:07:53 > 0:07:58- I know that Harvey would like to be...isolated.- Same old story.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02- Don't tell me, that bloke wants to be on the top of a mountain.- Yeah.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04But you probably want some chimney pots around you,

0:08:04 > 0:08:06some friends nearby.

0:08:06 > 0:08:12I do, but I also have got my job, so it's not really a "must".

0:08:12 > 0:08:15You would like to literally not see another light on, wouldn't you?

0:08:15 > 0:08:17No, I think... I'm joking a little.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21I mean, yeah, I'd like to be in touch, but I don't mind isolation.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22The location around it -

0:08:22 > 0:08:26if there was plenty of footpaths in easy reach,

0:08:26 > 0:08:30maybe the sound of water, a little beck trickling past,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32something like that, you know.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35- Lovely.- I've got only one, sort of, request, condition -

0:08:35 > 0:08:40- that it is not going to be too far from...M6.- OK.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44So it's easy access to go to the airports

0:08:44 > 0:08:47or travel down south to see family and friends.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Half-an-hour, 45-minute drive from the M6 or...?

0:08:50 > 0:08:52How much are you looking to spend up here?

0:08:52 > 0:08:54We've got a maximum of 325,000.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58- All right, look, you've got money in the bank.- Yeah.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59You've already started your job.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02You know, you don't want to move here, you NEED to move here.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04- Yeah, we need to move.- Off we go.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10So, having a budget of up to £325,000,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13our buyers are looking for a detached character property

0:09:13 > 0:09:14with a minimum of two bedrooms

0:09:14 > 0:09:17which can accommodate visiting friends and family.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Ideally, they'd like to be located within

0:09:19 > 0:09:21the Lake District National Park,

0:09:21 > 0:09:26and a maximum 45-minute drive from Domi's job in Kendal.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28We've got some wonderful properties lined up in locations

0:09:28 > 0:09:31that we hope will capture the charm of the Lake District,

0:09:31 > 0:09:33which Harvey and Domi hold so dear.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Then, at the end of every house tour, I'll be asking them both

0:09:37 > 0:09:39to guess the price of each property.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Our final destination is a Mystery House,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44made to challenge their expectations

0:09:44 > 0:09:46and which may cause them to reconsider

0:09:46 > 0:09:48elements of their wish list.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55We're starting our search south of the Lake District

0:09:55 > 0:09:57in the hamlet of Broughton Beck.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Nearby is the market town of Ulverston,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum and birthplace of Stan Laurel.

0:10:03 > 0:10:08Here, traditional pubs and tea rooms punctuate the thriving centre,

0:10:08 > 0:10:10providing refreshment for walkers.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Just a five-minute drive away is our first property,

0:10:13 > 0:10:16which is situated in the heart of the hamlet of Broughton Beck.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20So, here's house number one.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23We are just outside the Lake District National Park,

0:10:23 > 0:10:26- just on the boundary.- Yeah, I can tell by the surrounding countryside.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- Yeah.- It's not the Lake District National Park, but...

0:10:29 > 0:10:32But it's there. What do you think of it? Domi?

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- I quite like it.- In my book it's quite built up round here.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38- OK, I'll give you that. - It's what I would call residential.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Forget that you might be in a town. There's nothing here for you.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43You get your milk delivered, you get your bread delivered.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46It's proper rural living. Let's see what you think of the inside.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Come with me.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50'Dating back to the 18th century,

0:10:50 > 0:10:52'this cottage originally formed two homes.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55'Modernised throughout, it retains many original features,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58'which I know will appeal to both Harvey and Domi.'

0:10:58 > 0:11:03So, I'm hoping you are pleasantly surprised by the proportions

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- in this room.- It's quite spacious. Homely, yeah.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Yeah, it's nice, plenty of wood. That's always a good sign.

0:11:09 > 0:11:14The current owners, they have owned this place for around five years.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16There was an old fireplace coming about a metre further out.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- They got rid of that. Behind that fireplace was that fireplace.- Wow.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- And it deserved the work, didn't it? - Yeah.- It's a beautiful feature.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26You did say you didn't mind small,

0:11:26 > 0:11:28but I thought for a home in the Lakes,

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- this is a pretty big living space, isn't it?- Yeah, it's a good size.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Is this what you had in mind, Domi,

0:11:33 > 0:11:35for your home up here in the Lakes?

0:11:35 > 0:11:39Um, I think it's more about feeling. The feeling is good.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41That's all I want to hear, isn't it? Excellent, OK.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44So the kitchen... I was quite surprised

0:11:44 > 0:11:46by the size of this kitchen.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49- Yeah, definitely.- I love it. It's three sizes more than we are used to.

0:11:49 > 0:11:54Our kitchen is basically this with that much width.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57So it's about three times the size of our existing kitchen.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59If you moved here, do you think you'd take up a bit of cooking?

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- Believe it or not, I can cook. - Me, too.- You just don't?

0:12:02 > 0:12:06- You don't want to?- He does sometimes, when he wants to.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08- Just not for guests.- Oh, OK!

0:12:08 > 0:12:09THEY LAUGH

0:12:09 > 0:12:11No, he does.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14How do you feel about living somewhere like this?

0:12:14 > 0:12:17I mean, the house itself has got a lovely feeling to it.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21- Yeah, the house is so far really nice.- Good. All right.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Let's see what you make of upstairs

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- when we have a look at these bedrooms.- OK.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29'Our buyers wanted a minimum of two bedrooms,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32'and with two double and two single bedrooms,

0:12:32 > 0:12:34'there's plenty of space for guests here.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37'Although there is a second WC downstairs,

0:12:37 > 0:12:40'the only bathroom is located in the master bedroom.'

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Now, I'm looking forward to hearing

0:12:43 > 0:12:45and seeing your reactions to what we see here.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Yes, slightly unusual, isn't it?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49It feels very liberal, doesn't it?

0:12:49 > 0:12:53It does, yeah. Reminds me of something out of the Wild West.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Yeah, I know what you mean!

0:12:55 > 0:12:58You can maybe get the maid to come and give you some hot water...

0:12:58 > 0:13:01I could see the old cowboys go up to their room in the saloon,

0:13:01 > 0:13:03and they're sitting in the bath in the bedroom.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05- Bit posher than the Wild West, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07You've got four bedrooms up here.

0:13:07 > 0:13:13You've got plumbing in the smallest of the four bedrooms

0:13:13 > 0:13:14right above the utility.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16So you could make that a bathroom

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- and still have three bedrooms up here.- Yeah.- But it's big, isn't it?

0:13:19 > 0:13:21- It is big.- Yes, good size.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Let's go outside and brave the weather.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27- But start to have a think about price, all right?- OK.- Follow me.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32'So far, Harvey and Domi have warmed to this property

0:13:32 > 0:13:35'and seemed pleasantly surprised by the amount of space on offer.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38'I wonder what they'll make of the garden.'

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Now, you said you didn't want a great deal of outside space,

0:13:41 > 0:13:42maybe somewhere to sit outside

0:13:42 > 0:13:44and have a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48- That is this, isn't it?- Yes.- Let's have a go at guessing the price.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- Who wants to go first?- Harvey.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53All right, then, I will pitch in at 275.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57I think it's more expensive. I think it's 300.

0:13:57 > 0:14:04This house has just come onto the market for offers around £229,500.

0:14:04 > 0:14:05Ooh.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Price is definitely a bonus.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11- Yeah. It's a serious consideration for us.- OK.

0:14:13 > 0:14:19Being £95,500 under budget, this modernised and well-kept cottage

0:14:19 > 0:14:22with four bedrooms and a wealth of features

0:14:22 > 0:14:23also has a manageable garden

0:14:23 > 0:14:28and is located within a rural hamlet just a 40-minute drive from Kendal.

0:14:30 > 0:14:31This would definitely be a...

0:14:31 > 0:14:33- Spare bedroom? - Spare bedroom, wouldn't it?

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- Yes.- It's very nice. It's a good size, isn't it?

0:14:36 > 0:14:40It's got character. You can tell it's in an old cottage which is nice.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44The house definitely ticks a lot of boxes

0:14:44 > 0:14:45on our list.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46I can see myself living here.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49The feel of the property is great. It's exactly what

0:14:49 > 0:14:51we wanted as far as stonework goes.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54The floors, the flagstones, the fire...

0:14:54 > 0:14:55Couldn't ask for more.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59Perhaps a little bit too - I would term - residential.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Have a look at the bedroom, would-be bathroom.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05- So I guess you'd have the bath along here?- No.

0:15:05 > 0:15:06- Really?- Over there.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09- That's too short.- No, because then you can have a view.

0:15:09 > 0:15:14I was very surprised with the cost of this house

0:15:14 > 0:15:15because it would just give us

0:15:15 > 0:15:20the flexibility to do whatever work we needed to do, like bathrooms.

0:15:20 > 0:15:21Location is key,

0:15:21 > 0:15:26so, you know, there's always that thought in the back of my mind

0:15:26 > 0:15:29"Am I going to find something like this where I want to be?"

0:15:29 > 0:15:32So all done inside that nice, warm, dry house?

0:15:32 > 0:15:35We milked it, just so you could get a bit wetter!

0:15:35 > 0:15:38But you know what? It's a nice house to spend some time in, isn't it?

0:15:38 > 0:15:40- It is. Yeah. - Hopefully something to think about.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Let's go on to the next one. - Thank you.- Follow me.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52The Lake District's spectacular landscapes have inspired

0:15:52 > 0:15:55some of Britain's best-known artists and writers,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Beatrix Potter

0:15:58 > 0:16:02and even the creator of Postman Pat, John Cunliffe,

0:16:02 > 0:16:04all citing the magnificent countryside

0:16:04 > 0:16:06as having influenced their work.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Another such Lakeland devotee was Alfred Wainwright,

0:16:11 > 0:16:14whose very first encounter with the area inspired him

0:16:14 > 0:16:17to dedicate the rest of his life to writing about the walks,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20view and landscapes of the Cumbrian countryside.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Given Harvey's enthusiasm

0:16:23 > 0:16:25to follow in Wainwright's well-trodden footsteps,

0:16:25 > 0:16:28we've arranged for him and partner Domi to meet

0:16:28 > 0:16:32former secretary of the Alfred Wainwright Society, Peter Linney.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Nowadays, people remember Alfred Wainwright

0:16:34 > 0:16:37- because of the seven guidebooks that he produced.- Yes.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40They provided precise details

0:16:40 > 0:16:43for people who had not any real knowledge of the mountains,

0:16:43 > 0:16:48the 214 fells of the Lake District that he identified.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50They are the most comprehensive guides to the fells

0:16:50 > 0:16:52of the Lake District.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54For me, the most notable thing about the books are the drawings.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Yes, indeed.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00I've got here an example and this is the Outlying Fells one.

0:17:00 > 0:17:01And you can see they're actually hand-drawn.

0:17:01 > 0:17:06They're fully illustrated instructions and methods of ascent,

0:17:06 > 0:17:09everything you would need to know to climb the fells.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11He could look at a map and remember

0:17:11 > 0:17:15three miles ahead precisely where he was going to walk,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18so he had a prodigious memory in this respect.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24It was during his first holiday to the Lake District

0:17:24 > 0:17:28that Alfred Wainwright discovered Orrest Head in 1930.

0:17:28 > 0:17:29His 20 minutes' mile-long walk

0:17:29 > 0:17:32from Lake Windermere Station to the summit

0:17:32 > 0:17:35is what Peter is keen to show Harvey and Domi today.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41What's nice is that for each fell,

0:17:41 > 0:17:45- he gives you more than one route to ascend.- Yes.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48In the seven guidebooks, there are 214 fells listed

0:17:48 > 0:17:54and the 214 fells contains 759 individual ascents.

0:17:54 > 0:17:58Are those walks still being used by many walkers?

0:17:58 > 0:18:03Yes. To my knowledge, nobody has ever claimed to have done all 759.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Many people have claimed to do the 214.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09- It took me 30 years.- Ooh!

0:18:09 > 0:18:12You can do it in 38 weekends, I am told.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20I like to dabble in writing myself, so have you got any tips,

0:18:20 > 0:18:22having read all the Wainwright books?

0:18:22 > 0:18:25You have to spend a lifetime if it's, again, fell walking.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28You can't come and do it casually. You can't do it in little bits.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30You have to put some time in.

0:18:30 > 0:18:31You have to see a lot of it

0:18:31 > 0:18:34and spend a lot of time to get familiar with the ground.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36I'll be quite happy to do that.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39- Well, it's a good life ahead of you. - It is. Thanks.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Launched in 2002,

0:18:41 > 0:18:45today the Wainwright Society has over 3,000 members.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48As well as offering annual lectures and walks,

0:18:48 > 0:18:49they also release a quarterly magazine

0:18:49 > 0:18:53and run a photographic competition, the winners of which

0:18:53 > 0:18:56are included in their calendar for the following year.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59With Orrest Head standing at 120 metres high,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02I hope our buyers have their camera with them,

0:19:02 > 0:19:05because it features a panorama worthy of a winning snapshot.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Look at the view here.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13Can we stop and take a picture?

0:19:13 > 0:19:14Yes, of course. Yes, please.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21There's an actual quote in one of his books where he said,

0:19:21 > 0:19:23"It was a moment of magic,

0:19:23 > 0:19:27"a revelation so unexpected that I stood transfixed,

0:19:27 > 0:19:29"unable to believe my eyes.

0:19:29 > 0:19:33"Those few hours on Orrest Head cast a spell that changed my life."

0:19:33 > 0:19:35It's gorgeous. That's why we're here.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39Hopefully, this walk has given our couple

0:19:39 > 0:19:42and even deeper appreciation of Cumbria's landscape.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45All that remains is for Harvey to put pen to paper

0:19:45 > 0:19:47and continue the legacy.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Out house-hunt continues in the historic village of Cartmel.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03Located in a quite valley inside the Lake District National Park,

0:20:03 > 0:20:06this medieval settlement with its old-world charm

0:20:06 > 0:20:09is also known for its local horse racing meets.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11With a sprinkling of useful amenities

0:20:11 > 0:20:14and a wealth of circular walking routes starting here,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17this could make a good base for our buyers.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20It's a gentle saunter from the centre to our next property.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Does it feel like you're in the National Park a bit more now?

0:20:25 > 0:20:27- Maybe.- Maybe! You hear that?

0:20:27 > 0:20:30- STREAM BUBBLING Water.- That's a babbling brook.

0:20:30 > 0:20:35- So look, this is your outlook. - Quite close to the main road.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38- But you can't hear it. - You can't hear it cos of the water.

0:20:38 > 0:20:39There you go.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43That takes you into Kendal in about 25 minutes.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- What do you think of the house? - Big. - SHE LAUGHS

0:20:46 > 0:20:48- It's big!- Say what you see. Tell me.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Could you live in this location, do you think?

0:20:51 > 0:20:53- What you've seen so far?- Yes.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57- I could.- Good. Do you think he could?

0:20:57 > 0:20:58Wilderness Bob over here?

0:21:00 > 0:21:02Grizzly Adams. THEY LAUGH

0:21:02 > 0:21:06OK! Do you think Grizzly Adams can live in this location?

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Yes, I think so.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12So...you wanted your very own beck, you've got one.

0:21:12 > 0:21:13And my very own waterfall.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17- Very nice.- You can fish off there and catch your breakfast.- Yeah.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18No! Come on inside.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Originally constructed in the 17th century and extended

0:21:25 > 0:21:29in the 1950s, this property could benefit from a modern touch.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32And knowing that Harvey and Domi aren't averse to a little work,

0:21:32 > 0:21:35this house could be just the ticket.

0:21:35 > 0:21:41OK then. Well, the kitchen probably needs a bit of work.

0:21:41 > 0:21:46- Yes. But it's a good space.- I have to say I wouldn't change too much.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- THEY LAUGH - Brilliant!

0:21:48 > 0:21:51I'd maybe take out the carpet, but, you know, I'm into the wood.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54They've got a nice traditional solid feel to them.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- Yeah.- The beams - fine. Very tidy.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58You lazy so-and-so!

0:21:59 > 0:22:01There's no... What's wrong with it?

0:22:01 > 0:22:03- There's nothing.- What's not to like?

0:22:03 > 0:22:05And I like what you can see from the window,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08- which it didn't have in the previous house.- No.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10You've got views with this house.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13I've just thought - I might change the worktops.

0:22:13 > 0:22:14Might change the carpet.

0:22:14 > 0:22:19- You crazy man!- Cos I felt you were pushing me to change something.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21- All right, well, a pretty good start, isn't it?- Yes.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25- Let's go and take a look at the living room. Follow me.- OK.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28So the living room. Twin aspect.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Similar sort of style to the kitchen.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32- Good...size. - SHE LAUGHS

0:22:32 > 0:22:35You had me worried then! Don't leave me hanging like that!

0:22:35 > 0:22:39Again, I guess you would say it could do with modernising,

0:22:39 > 0:22:42but the features are all there. The beams, very nice.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46The fireplace, yeah. It's got plenty of character. We can work with that.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48- No, it's a good vibe.- Good!

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Let's go upstairs.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53On the first floor, two double bedrooms and a bathroom are found,

0:22:53 > 0:22:57more than enough accommodation for visiting family and friends.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02OK, well, this room - en suite, family bathroom

0:23:02 > 0:23:04and you've got the loo downstairs.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08- So you will be happy, will you not? Three toilets!- Oh, my God!

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Now we're living.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12- So what do you think? A master room?- It's a good size.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15- Can you fit an airbed in here though? - Oh, one of those, are you?

0:23:15 > 0:23:20- Would it match the wardrobes?- No, but we would change the wardrobes, baby.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22- So, all in all, this house...- Yes.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25There's nothing essential to do to it.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28I agree. The bones of the place - great.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Nothing wrong with it. Bit of cosmetic change, bring it up-to-date.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35Let's go outside, but also start thinking about price.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38I'll give you a tip - we're inside the National Park.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40Oh, dear.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Our buyers can see the potential here, which is great,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45and I also think they'll take a shine to the garden

0:23:45 > 0:23:46when they see the views.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Well, look at that. The sun's come out for us.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53- Yeah, makes all the difference. - It's glorious, though, isn't it?

0:23:53 > 0:23:55It's lovely. Very nice.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58So, how do you think you'd like to use this, Domi?

0:23:58 > 0:24:01As I mentioned before, I would like to have a little spot somewhere

0:24:01 > 0:24:07I can have a little table and chair and enjoy a drink of coffee or tea.

0:24:07 > 0:24:08Doesn't have to be wine!

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Be nice if it was, though, wouldn't it?

0:24:10 > 0:24:13She could sit here, waiting for me to come back over the hill.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15You get the sun. You can see the sun hits here in the afternoon.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18- It's actually very nice.- Let's have a think about how much this house

0:24:18 > 0:24:21- is on the market for then. Domi?- 300.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23- £300,000?- Yes.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26OK. Harvey?

0:24:26 > 0:24:30I may be being a little optimistic, but... I'd say 295.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Yeah, I'm afraid you are.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35I mentioned this was within the National Park.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38And prices, they don't just climb, they soar.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43This place is on the market for offers above £325,000.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45- OK.- OK.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47- So it's on top of our budget.- Yes.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49Why don't you go back inside the house itself here,

0:24:49 > 0:24:52have a look at the bedrooms, and I'll catch you in a mo?

0:24:52 > 0:24:53- OK.- See you later.- Yeah.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56At the very top of their budget,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59this spacious three-bed detached property is based

0:24:59 > 0:25:03in an edge-of-village location, blessed with amazing views.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06With more than enough room for visitors, heaps of potential

0:25:06 > 0:25:08and a 25-minute drive to Kendal,

0:25:08 > 0:25:12it looks like this house could be a contender.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15So what do you see for this room?

0:25:15 > 0:25:16- An office.- An office?

0:25:16 > 0:25:18About the right size.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20Nice view.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22We've got the beck down there, window open in the summer.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24And you can hear it.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27There's a lot of potential here. It's a blank canvas.

0:25:27 > 0:25:28There's plenty we can do with it.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32It's very presentable, very tidy, very nice immediate surroundings.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34And, obviously, the brook going past the front door

0:25:34 > 0:25:36and the little bridge makes it even more charming.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38And the bathroom.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41I guess this is one room that you would say needed

0:25:41 > 0:25:43a bit of modernising.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45I think every room needs modernising.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48- Quite big, when you think of it. - Yes.- Spacious.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52It's very spacious.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55There's enough space for family and friends to come and stay with us.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59It has got three...toilets.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03And, er, it's just really, really nice.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06For me, it ticks all the boxes and it's a project as well,

0:26:06 > 0:26:09so we can actually make it the way we want.

0:26:11 > 0:26:12Ah!

0:26:12 > 0:26:13Room with a view.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15We can make this one our master.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17- Could work.- It's big enough.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22Looking at this house, there is probably more space than we need.

0:26:22 > 0:26:23But I'm thinking, well,

0:26:23 > 0:26:28can I trade some of it for something a little bit closer to the dream?

0:26:28 > 0:26:31- So I've given you something to think about, hopefully.- You have.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35Two houses certainly financially at different ends of the scale,

0:26:35 > 0:26:39- aren't they? - Yep.- Have you got a favourite yet?

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Don't tell me! I take it back. Come on.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53It's the second day of our property search in the Lake District

0:26:53 > 0:26:54with Harvey and Domi,

0:26:54 > 0:26:58who have recently sold up and left south-east London.

0:26:58 > 0:27:03With a budget of £325,000, they're ready to begin a new life

0:27:03 > 0:27:06in a part of the countryside they know and love.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Coming up, our Mystery House may have hit the mark.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12- Excellent.- Beautiful, isn't it? - Quite happy being next to this.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16And I find out about the impact of tourism on the wildlife

0:27:16 > 0:27:17of the Lakes.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20- Do they not nip at you? - Er, they might do.

0:27:20 > 0:27:21Ow!

0:27:21 > 0:27:23THEY LAUGH

0:27:23 > 0:27:26Well, we firmly believe we're showing Harvey and Domi

0:27:26 > 0:27:28the best their budget can buy here in the Lake District

0:27:28 > 0:27:32at the moment, certainly, in terms of isolation for Harvey.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34So today, we're going to take a different tack and explore

0:27:34 > 0:27:37the other reasons why people come to this part of the world,

0:27:37 > 0:27:39and that's the Lakes themselves.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41The mystery property we're going to see today, well,

0:27:41 > 0:27:43it sits almost on the shores of Lake Windermere.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Let's see how we go.

0:27:48 > 0:27:53- So, Domi.- Yes.- What would you like to see as the Mystery House now?

0:27:53 > 0:27:58I'm open. Just...I'm waiting to be amazed.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01You haven't been able to show us anything bang in the middle of the

0:28:01 > 0:28:05Lake District, so I've got a funny feeling we're heading to Morecombe.

0:28:06 > 0:28:10- What do you think of cockles at this time?- I was going to say.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14I think perhaps a converted cockle hut. Something like that.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16THEY LAUGH Converted winkle picker's hut.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19If that's what you think you're going to see...

0:28:19 > 0:28:22Then I will be very pleasantly surprised.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25Everything else is a bonus, surely!

0:28:25 > 0:28:27Exactly. See, I'm trying to make your life easy.

0:28:27 > 0:28:28Thank you, mate. Thank you.

0:28:28 > 0:28:32- We've got one more chance. Let's see how we go.- Sounds good.

0:28:33 > 0:28:34For our final property,

0:28:34 > 0:28:37we're heading to the village of Newby Bridge.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40Situated on the river Leven at the southern end of Lake Windermere

0:28:40 > 0:28:43and named after the five-arched stone bridge

0:28:43 > 0:28:44that was built here in 1651,

0:28:44 > 0:28:47this quaint setting adjoins fells and forests

0:28:47 > 0:28:51which would suit Harvey and Domi's dream of getting back to nature.

0:28:51 > 0:28:56What's more, this mystery location is our closest to the water.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59These are the south-western shores of Lake Windermere.

0:28:59 > 0:29:00Yes, excellent.

0:29:00 > 0:29:03- Beautiful, isn't it? - Quite happy being next to this.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05Now, if you were to...

0:29:05 > 0:29:07Proceed to purchase the mystery property,

0:29:07 > 0:29:12then you get mooring for a boat here and some dry docking as well.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Ever thought about getting a boat?

0:29:14 > 0:29:17It could be a very real option,

0:29:17 > 0:29:20if we ended up somewhere like this, yes. Fantastic.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24A short stroll from the shores of the Lake is our mystery property,

0:29:24 > 0:29:27and this prime location means the compromise is on space.

0:29:27 > 0:29:29What's your first impressions?

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Well, obviously, it's squashed in between two others,

0:29:31 > 0:29:33but the location is great.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36- It's got character from the outside. - What do you think then, Domi?

0:29:36 > 0:29:40- I don't know. I think I like it because it's quite neat.- Yeah.

0:29:40 > 0:29:42But it's not very presentable.

0:29:42 > 0:29:46You would imagine having a pot with some flowers or something.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48- OK.- Just to make it more homely. - You can add that.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50- Or a cosy feeling. - That's fair enough.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53- You might be able to do that yourself.- Yeah, yeah, I know.

0:29:53 > 0:29:54But fair comment. All right.

0:29:54 > 0:29:55Let's go inside.

0:29:57 > 0:29:59Currently used as a holiday let,

0:29:59 > 0:30:02the barn conversion dates back to the mid-19th century

0:30:02 > 0:30:05and is one of six residential dwellings formerly used

0:30:05 > 0:30:10as farm buildings to service the nearby Stoke Mansion estate.

0:30:10 > 0:30:11In we come.

0:30:11 > 0:30:13Ooh! OK.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16- Quite surprising, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:30:16 > 0:30:20It's got that sort of character, contemporary feel to is, hasn't it.

0:30:20 > 0:30:22- Yes.- It's a surprise.

0:30:22 > 0:30:23A positive surprise. I love that window.

0:30:23 > 0:30:27You asked me yesterday in house two if there was anything I would change,

0:30:27 > 0:30:31and we were standing in the kitchen and I said, "No, not really a lot."

0:30:31 > 0:30:34There's a lot I'd change here, because I don't like contemporary.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37But, again, we have the space.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39You can do what you like with it.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- OK. You don't mind open-plan? - No, it's fine.

0:30:42 > 0:30:43It's basically just a family room

0:30:43 > 0:30:47and you've got a little balcony you can open,

0:30:47 > 0:30:48enjoy the warm.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51- Be cracking in the summer, wouldn't it?- Yeah.- Yeah.- Definitely.

0:30:51 > 0:30:53And it's a nice little view out there.

0:30:53 > 0:30:54Not unpleasant to look at.

0:30:54 > 0:30:55All right, this is good, yeah?

0:30:55 > 0:30:57- Yes!- Come with me to the kitchen.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00This is probably more...

0:31:00 > 0:31:04the proportions you're used to in your kitchen you had before.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07Again, it has actually got more work space.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10- Yeah.- More worktop space than we're used to.

0:31:10 > 0:31:11- So it's a positive.- This is luxury.

0:31:11 > 0:31:15- Would you keep this style?- No.- No. - We'd rip this out and start again.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19- I really was not expecting that.- No?

0:31:19 > 0:31:22- No.- Why not?- I quite like it. - No, this would come out.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25How would you have it in your dream world?

0:31:25 > 0:31:29I would make this more...warmer, cosier feel,

0:31:29 > 0:31:31a bit more character, so... A bit more wood, that sort of thing.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34- I mean, all this would come out. - Excellent.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36Well, you asked for a minimum of two bedrooms.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38Let's go and have a butcher's.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42Located on the same level as the living accommodation,

0:31:42 > 0:31:45the bedrooms here - two double and one single -

0:31:45 > 0:31:47present Harvey and Domi with various options

0:31:47 > 0:31:49for their own sleeping quarters,

0:31:49 > 0:31:51as well as space for visiting guests.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56Now, as regards to master is concerned, I think

0:31:56 > 0:31:59this is slightly smaller than the bedroom next door.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03But it just felt more like a room you'd want to spend time in.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05OK. You've got a bed, you've got a wardrobe.

0:32:05 > 0:32:08For you, commuting-wise, you're not too far from work.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10Half an hour, 40 minutes on a bad run, I suppose.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13So let's go outside and maybe have a think about price.

0:32:13 > 0:32:14- OK.- After you, sir.- Thank you.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20Having been bowled over by the location of this property,

0:32:20 > 0:32:23our buyers haven't been so taken by the interior.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25So let's see if returning outside

0:32:25 > 0:32:28and taking in the communal gardens can win them over.

0:32:29 > 0:32:30So...

0:32:32 > 0:32:34- Outside. Nice and quiet, isn't it?- It is.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37It's a really good mystery property.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40I wanted to like the inside and I'm not saying you couldn't work with it,

0:32:40 > 0:32:45but I'm worried, given where we are, that the price is going

0:32:45 > 0:32:48to be maybe leaving you not too many options inside.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50So let's get straight onto that.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54How much do you think this mystery property is on the market for?

0:32:55 > 0:32:59I think it's the top of our budget.

0:32:59 > 0:33:00325.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02OK. Harvey?

0:33:02 > 0:33:04Let's go 335.

0:33:04 > 0:33:10This place is on the market for offers around £349,500.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12He's gone!

0:33:12 > 0:33:13We've lost him!

0:33:13 > 0:33:19- We've lost him.- I'm back. - But! But stay with me here.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22I thought you'd gone...

0:33:22 > 0:33:27The owner has said they're prepared to entertain offers of £325,000.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31- Your budget.- OK.- Well, look, this is all food for thought, hopefully.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33- Yeah. Yeah.- So why don't you go back inside,

0:33:33 > 0:33:35have a look into those other bedrooms,

0:33:35 > 0:33:37and I'll catch up with you back outside?

0:33:37 > 0:33:39- OK.- See you in a mo.- Thank you.

0:33:41 > 0:33:45On the market for nearly £25,000 over budget, the owners would

0:33:45 > 0:33:51consider offers around Harvey and Domi's maximum budget of £325,000.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54This contemporary single-level barn conversion with three bedrooms

0:33:54 > 0:33:58set close to the shores of Lake Windermere and a 40-minute drive

0:33:58 > 0:34:02from Kendal is giving Harvey and Domi a lot to think about.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05I do like the idea of if someone's in the kitchen

0:34:05 > 0:34:07and you're sitting relaxing, reading a book,

0:34:07 > 0:34:10you can still connect. So that's great.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15- Bathroom.- Sink and shower. But there's only one toilet.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20This is like a perfect solution for us, this property,

0:34:20 > 0:34:23because it gives us the best of both worlds.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26For me, easy access to civilisation.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30Harvey has got a beautiful lake on his doorstep.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32The location - I'm sold.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35The house itself, you come inside - I'll be totally honest -

0:34:35 > 0:34:37a bit of a disappointment for me.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40It's, to all intents and purposes, featureless.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Hmm.

0:34:43 > 0:34:48Small bedroom. Needs bringing alive. Bit of work to do to make it a home.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50So that's it. The last house.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Anything else you want to have a quick look at or all done?

0:34:53 > 0:34:56- We're all done, thank you. - Good. So it's decision time.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59Let's go and find somewhere to have a bit of a chat.

0:40:10 > 0:40:13So, you've had some time to think things through.

0:40:13 > 0:40:17- Have you come to a decision? - We've had our thoughts.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19I wouldn't say they've led to a decision.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22We remain open in our thinking.

0:40:22 > 0:40:26- There's no conclusion as yet. - Right, OK.

0:40:26 > 0:40:27What's your favourite property?

0:40:27 > 0:40:31- The favourite property, the building was number one.- The first house? OK.

0:40:31 > 0:40:32Yeah, full of character.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36But then you have a different favourite location then, I take it.

0:40:36 > 0:40:39That was number three, clearly. Without a shadow of a doubt.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42- So your favourite location is the Mystery House's location?- Yep.

0:40:42 > 0:40:47I'm not sure if we would go with property number three because...

0:40:47 > 0:40:50Not that it's too small for us because it's not,

0:40:50 > 0:40:54it's, you know, it's a size we were expecting to get for our budget.

0:40:54 > 0:40:59To be honest, it's got the feeling of a holiday let which it is.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03The big question is, could you turn that holiday let into a home?

0:41:03 > 0:41:05Which is exactly the question I've been asking Domi.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08- Is there something we could do to take what's there...- Mm-hm.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12- ..and make it into something? Even if it took time.- Yeah.

0:41:12 > 0:41:14And that's the question we're struggling to answer,

0:41:14 > 0:41:17probably because it's at the top of our budget.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21We don't want to go too far into mortgage territory

0:41:21 > 0:41:24and totally obliterate that work/life balance

0:41:24 > 0:41:25that we're seeking.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Having shown you around the Mystery House,

0:41:28 > 0:41:33I can see now that you tried so hard to make that accommodation work.

0:41:33 > 0:41:34Yeah, it was gutting, really.

0:41:34 > 0:41:36We were already planning what we were going to do

0:41:36 > 0:41:40on either side of the lake with our little canoe, you know?

0:41:40 > 0:41:43- So sounds like we got pretty close. - We really wanted it to work.

0:41:43 > 0:41:47And I think what else it has shown is that we are being realistic,

0:41:47 > 0:41:49there are those properties out there, you can achieve it,

0:41:49 > 0:41:52it's just what opportunity there is at a given time.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54We're already here, money in the bank

0:41:54 > 0:41:57so we just basically need to stay put and wait.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00I think you're doing exactly the right thing.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02You now live on the doorstep,

0:42:02 > 0:42:07you're able to hopefully speak to the estate agents on a daily basis,

0:42:07 > 0:42:09maybe have a look around these properties

0:42:09 > 0:42:11before they come overtly to the market

0:42:11 > 0:42:13and make your move, maybe the same day.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16Yeah, I think these few days have proved that.

0:42:16 > 0:42:17It's been a great couple of days.

0:42:17 > 0:42:20I've certainly loved looking round these fantastic locations

0:42:20 > 0:42:23- and the properties with you. - Thank you.- Good luck.- Thanks.

0:42:28 > 0:42:30I'm really positive on how they've both thought laterally.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33They really tried to like that Mystery House

0:42:33 > 0:42:34because of its location

0:42:34 > 0:42:36and I think if they do the same in the spring

0:42:36 > 0:42:38when there are more properties for sale,

0:42:38 > 0:42:42they stand every chance of finding the right property.

0:42:42 > 0:42:44I wish them both the very best of luck.

0:42:45 > 0:42:49Harvey and Domi loved the location of the mystery property

0:42:49 > 0:42:51and have found a flat located in a mansion

0:42:51 > 0:42:54on the same estate which they've fallen in love with.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57After two viewings, they're hoping to put in an offer

0:42:57 > 0:43:01to secure their new home in the Lakes very soon.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04If you'd like to escape to the country in England, Scotland,

0:43:04 > 0:43:06Wales or Northern Ireland

0:43:06 > 0:43:12and would like our help, you can apply online at bbc.co.uk/beonashow.
